VISA REFUSALS EXPLAINED E uropean embassies in Bangkok routinely state that most visa applications from Thais are granted, but what are the principal reasons for failure?

Pattaya Today has been in contact with 35 unsuccessful Thai applicants to ascertain what went wrong. The most detailed feedback came from “reasons for refusal” on the form issued to those who fail to obtain a British visa, but a number of Schengen applications have also been reviewed. Schengen visas cover 22 members of the European Union – the principal exceptions being Britain and some in Eastern Europe – as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

As regard tourist visas, the most common reason for failure was the applicant’s explanation of why she or he would return to Thailand at the end of the holiday. Although applicants typically mentioned on the form paid employment of some kind, ownership of

property in Thailand, family commitments or support from the foreign sponsor, documentary evidence in support of the claims was often not provided. A typical refusal letter stated, “You have not provided real evidence of your work on the pig farm in northern Thailand, nor provided details of your income such as upto-date bank statements or international cash transfer slips. Therefore, I am not convinced on the balance of probability that your reasons for wanting to come to UK are as claimed.”

Another major difficulty was that there was confusion between the applicant and the sponsor. In one application, the sponsor had written that he wished his girlfriend to come to Europe for a two months’ holiday, but the applicant had elsewhere stated that she wanted a six months’ stay. In another case, the applicant had said she just wanted a holiday but the sponsor had stated he wanted her to help care for

his bedridden mother. But, of course, tourist visas do not allow working. In other words, the sponsor and the applicant need to be very careful to tell the same tale, or risk suspicions in the minds of entry clearance officers. One lady hoping to visit southern Spain during the summer months claimed her main reason for travelling was to experience snow.

When considering familymember settlement visas, which include the right to work in the host country, the reasons for refusal

tended to shift somewhat towards the sponsor. For example, sponsors who are self-employed are required to provide much more documentary evidence than those in salaried employment or on a pension. They are typically asked to provide, in addition to company accounts and bank statements, proof of regular contact with the government tax authority, the VAT bureaucracy and more. News No fingerprint on doorknob

An unidentified thief entered a hotel room in Naklua Soi 12 by proceeding on a high wall and then entering through an unlocked door. Chinese tourist Li Yang, 47, said she had lost a necklace

worth about 8,000 baht, adding that she was not in the room at the time. Police said they could not find any fingerprints on the handle of the door and speculated the intruder had worn gloves.

Violence over unpaid bill

A Canadian tourist was attacked by waiters and waitresses after he allegedly did not pay up as demanded. Darryl McKinnon, 43, was drinking in a bar in Soi 7 and, according to reports, ran up a bill for 1,450 baht which he said was excessive and offered

to pay just 1,000 baht. This led to a violent argument in which McKinnon received cuts and bruises on his face and head. As police arrived, the staff tried to escape and then offered the defence that they were only reacting to violence and not instigating it.

Foreigner apparently self-stabbed

A Russian man was injured after a heated argument with a Thai driver following a motorbike accident. The Russian tourist, who has not been identified, collided with a machine driven by Wanchana Tulathong and agreed to pay 3,000 baht in compensation. However, the Moscow man said he needed to go home first to collect the cash, leaving his bike with the aggrieved

Unknown man drowns in empty building A French visitor was the first to find the corpse of a Thai man who had drowned in the derelict Batman building in South Pattaya. Francois Gougry, 36, said he had come to the building with some friends and came across the body of a Thai man around 55 years old. Police said the dead man had no identification and had apparently drowned in one meter of water.

Several locals said they had seen a middle-aged Thai man jogging in the area but were unable to confirm if he was the dead guy.

The body was taken to Banglamung mortuary for autopsy and it is hoped that concerned relatives will make enquiries once they realize one of their kin is missing.

Thai. However, the tourist returned after 10 minutes shouting and screaming which forced Wanchana to defend himself with a knife. Unfortunately, according to Wanchana, the Russian ran into the knife accidentally and injured himself in the abdomen.

The casualty was rushed to hospital and police said the whole incident was still under review.

Pathomphol, the winner, went home with the legendary guitar and Narathip, the first runner-up, received a hotel stay voucher.

News Pedestrian overpass opposed Building to be dismantled

A proposal to build two pedestrian walkways over Sukhumvit Road in front of the Father Ray Foundation and Pattaya City School Number 5 is being opposed by some locals on the grounds that the construction will encourage robbers and thieves as the

area is a shopping and banking district. A budget of 9 million baht has already been approved and Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh has ordered officials to compose a detailed report before a final decision is made or a lawsuit launched.

Illegal tour guides arrested

A group of housewives from the Naklua Soi 11 district visited Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta to ask him to ensure that a building next to Banglamung Post Office will be knocked down as it has been erected without permission on public land. Parts of the building have already been pulled down, and it is hoped that the remaining work will begin within the next 12 months.

Tour bus was on fire

Tourist police officers searched Rubberland on Sukhumvit Road after hearing that illegal, foreign workers were harassing tourists. The officers did indeed find several tour guides operating illegally as this profession is not open to foreigners. The nondocumented workers were accused of working without a permit and obstructing tourists trying to disembark from buses in an attempt to force them to buy souvenirs and trinkets. In the past two months, no fewer than 40 foreign tourist guides or sellers have been arrested with a view to deporting them.

Italian refused Chinese tourist to pay up tricked Police rushed to North Pattaya after locals said a bus waiting for 10 foreigners watching a show had burst into flames. The driver said he noticed the vehicle was aflame and thought the best thing to do was to remove the ignition key. He added that the bus had become rather hot in recent times but he had not thought the problem was too serious. It is provisionally thought that the bus had an electrical problem resulting in a short circuit.

An 18-year-old transvestite was arrested by police after an incident on Soi Buakhao in which a 69-year-old Italian man was punched and slapped. The teen, Anuwat Kaewsaengsai, admitted hurting the elderly tourist but said he did not use any weapon or implement in the assault. He explained that the man had agreed a sum of money in return for a bedtime activity but had then refused to pay up as he was allegedly disappointed. This was evidently why Anuwat had commenced an attack in order to take by force the 1,000 baht which he felt he had earned.

A female visitor from Guangdong was shopping in a convenience store in North Pattaya when two men approached her and asked to see some Chinese money. When Haijing Feng, 35, showed them a 1,000 yuan note, the thieves grabbed it and ran out of the store before anyone could stop them. They are believed to have escaped on a motorbike.

Garage ruined by short circuit

Loud noises, like exploding bombs, were heard coming from a burning garage in Nongprue but the explanation turned out to be fuel tanks bursting owing to the intense heat.

Investigators said the cause appeared to be an electrical fault.

Thirteen motorbikes belonging to customers were damaged beyond repair.

A building site labourer who discovered a man hanging from a tree was initially not believed by his colleagues who carried on working without bothering to investigate. Sakol Patchimma, 54, said he was passing a wooded area near The Sanctuary of Truth in Naklua where he noticed a dangling corpse. He added that several of his workmates eventually accompanied him back to the macabre scene before calling the police. The corpse, a man about 30, had been dead for about two days and was sent for routine autopsy. There were no identifying documents found at the scene.

Beware the firewater

It’s once again time for farang and Thais alike to celebrate Songkran, but more than 300 celebrants are expected to be killed on the roads during the festive period. Nearly half all such fatalities will be attributed to drunken driving.

Play it safe this year, particularly if you are driving. For most people, anything more than three or four drinks in one hour will push you over the alcohol limit and render you 11 times more likely to be in a fatal accident than a driver who has consumed no alcohol.

Even one drink can affect a person’s response time and driving ability. After drinking, it takes approximately six hours for the body to completely eliminate alcohol from its system.

Drunk driving is the major cause

of fatalities in Thailand, which has the dubious distinction of having the second-highest traffic death rate in the world. Last Songkran some 364 Thais and farang were killed

in 3,373 accidents—81 percent of which involved motorbikes.

Yes, go out and enjoy Songkran.

More gambling Thailand’s ongoing debate about officially-sanctioned gambling received a boost from Rangsit University’s study which claimed that more than 100 billion baht a year in tax revenues would pour into state coffers if casinos were legalized here. The estimated revenue excluded contributions from tourism, hotels and conferences. The study emphasized that it took the Singapore government only three years to see annual tax revenue from legal casinos to reach the 100 billion baht threshold, but Thailand could do much better as it already has a much larger pool of international tourists.

One was Duangporn Apasilpa’s study of Macau casinos which found that income from casinos in Macau accounted for 85 percent of the government’s income. The most cited social impact from casinos was the increase in foreign workers, followed by how gambling affected the island’s image.

The research indicated that the image was a positive one, although that could relate to Macau’s traditions which have been much more open-minded than those in Thailand.

Ideal model Worldwide, the most popular model for a casino is a “mixed use” concept where a large leisure and shopping complex houses gambling facilities comprising not more than 25 percent of the total floor space in the resort. One current example is the Naga resort in Phnom Penh, in Cambodia, which is still undergoing some reconstruction. Here, a casino is in the same premises as a fivestar hotel, several restaurants and a high-class shopping mall. The future of official gambling in Thailand, if there is one, is likely linked to the development of “quality” rather than “mass” tourism.

detailed document to consider, commonly known as Appendix 2, and available on the government’s website.

The regulations become complex especially if the sponsor has more than one source of income or wishes to include cash savings as part of the total.

Several applicants and sponsors explained that they had quite innocently blundered. One Thai lady, intending to travel to UK for one month, noticed that her visa was valid for six months and travelled back only at the end of that period. The next time she applied for a visa, she had trouble because the entry clearance officer noticed there was an inconsistency between the one-month stay promised in the online application and the half-year actually taken.

One sponsor stated in a supporting letter that he lived in a one-room flat where his mother and father also stayed. The application for

the Thai visitor was refused on the grounds of health and safety, namely overcrowding.

Sadly, he had inadvertently written “one” room when he should have put “five”.

The visa was granted on the second application although the full fees had to be paid again.

The overall conclusion is that Thais wishing to visit Western Europe – and we have no reason to think the position is radically different for Australia and the USA – need to recognize that the application process these days is essentially a paper chase. Every claim needs to be supported by written evidence. The same is true for the sponsor. Embassies are concerned that applicants for tourist visas have solid reasons for returning to Thailand: claims about family responsibilities, the holding of land or possession of a job must be accompanied by written proof. Examples might be doctor’s reports on

elderly parents, official land or property registration or letter from an employer offering to keep the post open for the duration of the vacation. It’s also important that any Thai bank account should not have a very low balance at the point of application. In one case we saw, a British sponsor had sent over 50,000 baht to primepump his girlfriend’s account.

At the time of registration, two weeks later, the sum had shrunk to just 17 baht.

One ex-embassy officer said, “There are three issues to a successful visa application.

Is the sponsor in a sound financial position to ensure the applicant will not be a liability on state funds? Is the applicant of good character and have solid reasons for returning to Thailand (unless settlement visa)? Is there good evidence of a sound and ongoing relationship between the sponsor and the applicant?” She added, “These days it is not what you say but what you can prove.”

Anantara’s King’s Cup raises millions for Thai elephants

After four days of fun festivities, the 14th annual King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament came to a close on Sunday, March 13, coinciding with Thailand’s National Elephant Day. Ten teams with players from around the world, including Miss Thailand, the New Zealand All Blacks rugby players and professional polo players created many memorable on (and off) pitch moments.

A total of 20 unemployed ex-street elephants took part in this year’s tournament, during which time they received full veterinary checks from the Zoological Parks Organisation of Thailand (under the patronage of HM the King of Thailand) and the Department of Livestock Development.

In addition, all elephants were given essential vitamins, food and care which are not available to them during their normal daily lives.

The tournament was introduced to

Thailand in 2001 by Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas and has grown to become one of the biggest charitable events in the Kingdom, raising funds for projects that better the lives of Thailand’s elephant population. A sum of 15 million baht has been raised this year taking the total raised to date to an impressive 47 million baht (US$1,300,000).

The money raised from the 2016 tournament will be donated to a variety of elephant-related projects including funding a new mobile clinic in Mae Teang, Chiang Mai Province which has the largest concentration of trekking camps in Thailand. Funds will also be donated to the Zoological Parks Organisation of Thailand to support projects to improve the year-round lives of the 200 elephants and mahouts in Ban Ta Klang, in Surin Province where the ex-street elephants face ongoing hardship.

Building collapsed on light posts A building collapsed and damaged three electric posts, which in turn fell on several houses and shops near South Road in Pattaya. The incident took place on Soi Marine Hotel.

Construction labourers were working on site when the crisis occurred. They were told to stop all activity while the damage was repaired and electricity restored in the district.

TAT welcomes upcoming Qatar Airways flights to Chiang Mai and Krabi

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has welcomed the announcement by Qatar Airways that it will inaugurate flights to Chiang Mai and Krabi as of December 2016.

The Doha-based airline’s Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, made the announcement at the ITB Berlin, the world’s largest international travel fair, which was held during March 9-13, 2016. He said four flights per week will be launched from Doha to Krabi on December 6 and three flights per week from Doha to Chiang Mai also in December, with the exact date to be announced later.

It’s often claimed that the global era that we inhabit is unparalleled for the innovation and technology that we take for granted. There’s the universal power of the iPhone, our Wi-Fisaturated brains and Google’s driverless car for starters, not to mention all the other wonders coming out of Silicon Valley. But how true is the thesis in actual fact? In fact, it may be that the age of high economic growth and disruptive technology may already have passed its peak.

For most of history, economic growth was absent. Between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages there was basically none. England’s per capita income doubled between 1300 and 1700, but that was a rate over centuries which was hardly noticed.

Only in the 19th century did that change. In other words, economic growth is a recent historical blip and by no means a constant over time.

The great leap forward occurred from about 1870. Commercial electricity, the internal combustion engine, penicillin, refrigeration and the telephone turned life upside down. Land was freed up to produce food for humans. The stench of horse manure was cleared from the streets once the petrol-driven engine came into common use. Piped water and gas entered the home. Thomas Edison paved the way for the skyscraper powered by electric lifts.

By 1950 only one American in 100 died in infancy, with the rest living to 70 and beyond. By then, most people were literate and journeys which used to take weeks now consumed only hours.

Within the blink of an eye, so to speak, life went from being nasty, brutish and short to pleasant, bright and relatively lengthy. People who believe that the early 21st century has more changes, should ask themselves whether they would prefer to give up their iPhone or their flush toilet, their laptop or antibiotics. Or just imagine life without electricity. It is human nature to take for granted what went before, but that can give a distorted sense of reality.

Between 1870 and 1970 – the century of biggest change – per capita incomes grew at many times the rate of what went before. They also exceeded anything that has occurred since. With the exception of the 1990s, when the digital revolution hit our desktops, both productivity and incomes have slowed massively.

Moreover, it could get worse. Techno-pessimist Martin Ford, in his book Rise of the Robots (2015) envisages a jobless future in which only those who own the machines will live in abundance.

Technology, of course, will continue to evolve in dazzling ways. But if the iPhone did not lift productivity rates, what will? Separately, most recent advances are now in the treatment of physical ailments. But prolonging human life such as finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease or even a cryonic leap into immortality won’t bring economic benefits and won’t create extra production.

Since most people, apart from a privileged elite, are not getting wealthier in real terms, they may be becoming angry as their hopes are dashed. The embittered US presidential primary battle offers a case study of what happens to politics when people’s economic aspirations are dashed. Donald Trump’s success did not come out of the blue. His rise owes a great deal to the frustrations borne out of economic stagnation. The constitutional referendum battles in the UK and in Thailand can be seen in the same light.

Governments always prod the market to go where it decrees.

But governments take wrong turns. Huge chunks of the US economy are devoted to financial trading, healthcare claims processing, real estate transactions and other “busy but useless” commercial activity. In so many countries of the world, the watchword is “growth”, but in reality we are a million miles from achieving it. It may well be that we are in global terms reverting to a former model in which stagnation was the norm.

Thailand may seem far away from these generalizations. Of course, it is a developing industrial economy and still has strong agricultural roots. But the basic scenario is the same. The rich are getting richer whilst the inequality gap widens broadly in society as a whole. Most people now have an iPhone and take technological change for granted. But is the country actually creating more wealth to fund the people’s aspirations? Probably not. Pessimistically, there is no hard evidence that democratically-elected governments fare any better than military juntas.

Our Community Hooters makes Happy Easter Sunday for children from Baan Jing Jai Foundation Hooters Asia welcomed orphans to each location. This is one of the committed CSR activities as Hooters Asia is determined to give back to society.

Last Sunday, Baan Jing Jai Foundation brought 50 children along to do egg hunt, egg paint, face paint, games and other activities with Hooters Girls. On this occasion, Hooters Pattaya General Manager Mike Warde and newly crowned Miss Hooters Pattaya Jessica Arra presented a donation of 142,081 baht to Khun Pieangtar, founder of Baan Jing Jai Foundation.

Big Cleaning Day 2016 at Amari Pattaya Amari Pattaya hotel team members and management led by Sukanyapach Homchuen, executive assistant manager, organised Big Cleaning Day 2016. This annual activity was created to clean and maintain several facilities around the garden, swimming pool area, walkway and watercourse, and to keep them tidy and spotless. All areas were cleaned by employees who volunteered to create a nice and lovely environment.

Several years ago Christmas was celebrated only in the tourist areas of the country, but as each year has passed it has grown to become a festival celebrated by a large number of the population, Thai and foreign.

Easter is another Christian festival that is slowly becoming more popular each year, and Central Festival Pattaya Beach recently held a competition to find the biggest and most beautifully decorated Easter egg.

S e ve r a l e n t r i e s we re delivered to the Beach Road site, with the winning entry coming from the special needs children at the Father Ray Foundation.

Explaining to a group of

children with special needs what Easter was all about, and then getting them to build and decorate a giant egg was not an easy task.

However, they worked for many hours, building and plastering the structure, before several talented artists painted an agreed upon design.

Deciding on the best way to transport the egg to Beach Road was a logistical nightmare, but never say never, and the egg eventually arrived in one piece.

Eggs also arrived from several local churches, as well as from Alcazar, Tiffany’s and the Cartoon Network Water Park, and there was not a drop of chocolate in sight.

A river of green flowed along Beach Road on the afternoon of Thursday, the 17th of March, a day known the world over as St Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world.

In hamlets, towns and cities in Ireland people were celebrating.

In Washington DC the water in the fountain on the lawn of the White House poured green. Thousands marched through the streets of New York and Prince William joined the London parade.

Unfortunately the parade in Sydney was cancelled this year, but that never stopped thousands pouring on to the streets to celebrate.

Now in its sixth year, the Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade is getting bigger each year, with thousands parading along the streets of Pattaya.

They were accompanied by several marching bands and 20 decorated vehicles from many local businesses and organisations.

The Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade is now firmly established on the Pattaya social calendar, and it is a day for everyone, Thai and foreign, resident and tourist, young and old, to come together for

The management and staff of Siam Bayshore Pattaya held another corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity “Give back to Elderly” by donating amenities for residents at Banglamung Elderly Home.

an afternoon of fun and also to raise much-needed funds for Pattaya’s largest charitable organisation, the Father Ray Foundation.

Many children under the care of the Foundation took part in the parade, as they do every year. Children with special needs marched alongside students in

wheelchairs and this year the blind students arrived on a decorated float, performing music along the route, much to the enjoyment of the crowds watching.

St. Patrick made an appearance, but due to the very hot weather he traveled along the route on a very green vehicle. Sitting beside him

was Derrick Kane, the man who came up with the idea of the annual event and who is responsible for the success of the event.

March the 17th is a day for everyone in the Pattaya community to come together, and you now have a year to prepare for the 2017 Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Many airlines these days have introduced the “Economy Premium” option. Almost like business class but considerably less priced. If Centara Hotels and Resorts was an airline their business/first class would be Centara and Centra would be the economy premium class with emphasis on premium.

Miss Hooters Pattaya Pageant 2016 The Road to Vegas 2015 was the first year Thailand had its very own Hooters Girl, Sukanya “Pan” Phunkok competed in the 19th annual Miss Hooters International Pageant in Las Vegas in the United States.

The annual competition boasts 100 of the world's most beautiful Hooters Girls who battle it out to walk away with the crown and title of Miss Hooters International.

The pageant contestants were selected from more than 18,000 Hooters Girls and evaluated based on interview questions, personality and their overall contribution to the iconic Hooters brand.

The pageant night (broadcast on Fox Sports last year) consisted of a five-person panel of celebrity judges, which included Lyn Austin, the “Original Hooters Girl”.

This year is the competition's 20th year and Hooters Thailand is holding their own local pageants for Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok (Soi 15 and Nana). One Hooters Girl from each location will be sent to the US to represent Thailand in this year's pageant.

The first Miss Hooters Thailand pageant was held at Hooters Nana on March 25, and the second was held at Hooters Pattaya on March 26. The third pageant will be held at Hooters Phuket on Sunday, April 3.

Each pageant showcased 10 of the most gorgeous Hooters Girls in three rounds: swimsuit, cocktail dress, and uniform and interview.

The winners from Hooters Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket will then compete not only for the crown and title but the chance to be the face of the Hooters Thailand brand and the $30,000 (1 million Thai baht) cash prize.

The lucky winner will become a brand ambassador and

spokesperson, traveling to assist international openings, appearing in national advertisements and contributing to marketing initiatives and special events throughout the year.

Top Norwegian rally driver visits Royal Cliff Hotels Group Royal Cliff Hotels Group welcomed another worldrenowned athlete, Andreas Mikkelsen, the 2011 and 2012 Intercontinental Rally Champion who holds the record for being the youngest driver to score FIA WRC points.

Mikkelsen is a true all-rounder and has actively been involved in rally racing since 2006 when he made his debut in the World Rally Championship (WRC). He joined Volkswagen Motorsport full time in 2013, contesting the full WRC for the first time in the Polo R WRC. While he was under no pressure to push for top results, he still finished a season-best fourth on the Acropolis Rally, setting three fastest stage times – his first for Volkswagen in the WRC – along the way. He won the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) and successfully defended his title in 2012.

Mikkelsen’s record was as high as 150 points when he finished in the top three of the WRC Drivers’ standings. He also showed he has the pace to win at WRC level, setting 20 fastest stage times proving that he has the skill, speed and consistency to master any type of WRC terrain.

AMARI PATTAYA APPOINTS NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF And Under the Toque is Chef Shaun Venter

There’s a new toque in town and it’s the return of the creative, charismatic Chef Shaun Venter. He has countless culinary notches on his belt having spent 17 years touring the globe from his birthplace of South Africa. He’s no stranger to Pattaya, having worked at Hilton for many years before being appointed executive chef at Hilton Hua Hin. He and his family are now back in his favourite Thai city and have taken up the mantel at one of the area's premier resorts, Amari Pattaya.

The resort’s flagship restaurant is the stunning Mantra located on Pattaya Beach Road in front of the property facing the bay. Here, world signature cuisine is served on an open stage encompassing international food without barriers prepared in seven dedicated kitchens. April 2016 is a landmark year for Mantra as it is celebrating its 10th birthday with a brand new menu created by Chef Shaun and many planned musical events with carefully selected sounds to make the ambiance swing while you indulge in the global gastro fare from the new innovative menu.

If you haven’t already visited Mantra it really is a world-class gourmet destination. Seven regional specific kitchens offer Japanese, Thai Contemporary, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and Charcoal Grill. We embarked on our Mantra experience with a hot and sour Szechuan soup with fresh blue crab meat and a white miso soup with truffles and foie gras. I was the fortunate recipient of the miso soup and it was sheer nirvana with

its fascinating umami tang combined with the earthiness of truffles and the final luxury kiss of foie gras it was simply sensational. Meanwhile across the table the Szechuan soup was disappearing fast and Mick pronounced it the best example of this spicy Chinese soup he had tasted in a long time. Deep-fried jumbo prawns with sweet horseradish sauce (B.610) followed. These chubby fat prawns were sauce doused and accompanied by an apple and celery salad for a more textural interplay resulting in another “must-have” dish.

We stayed in Asian cuisine to enjoy “Chef Pet’s” trio of barbequed meats and sauces. Crisp pork belly, red pork and duck languished on the plate. These succulent meats had been

cooked by a master; the duck was juicily tender, the pork with its layer of crispy crackling a delight and the red pork melted in the mouth. Accompanied by various sauces including hoisin, it was a stellar standout dish. Wok-fried shitake mushrooms in oyster sauce (B.230) hit the table escorted by snow fish in Chinese brown sauce with choi sum, garlic, ginger and black mushrooms and accompanied by a side dish of fried noodles (B.1350). Yes, it was as good as it sounds; polar white fish fell in shards under the fork and fell immediately in love with the succulence of the brown sauce. We were replete with the finest pageant of dishes and yet again Mantra had hit the gourmet heights with bells and whistles.

The dozen or so pages of this new pan-gastro menu is extraordinary.

Let me run through just some of the many highlights. The Chinese menu produces remarkable duck and pork dishes from the wood-fired oven, such as Hong Kong BBQ duck roll with hoisin sauce and from the wok comes its celebrated beef tenderloin slices with onion rings and Cantonese sauce. For Japanese lovers the whole gamut is represented from sushi through tempura to misoglazed Chilean sea bass (aka snow fish). The Thai Contemporary section offers traditional cuisine tempered

Wine Tasting at Twilight Restaurant & Bar Twilight Restaurant and Bar at Centara Grand Modus Resort Pattaya hosted its first wine tasting event featuring a selection of wines paired with snacks and tapas.

On offer for wine aficionados were Chilean wines from Trewa Winery Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Alicanto Winery. Also featured were Australian wines Chardonnay and Shiraz from Inspired Company Winery. To pair with the wines, Executive Chef Alongkorn “Goff ” Seanganant prepared a sumptuous lineup of tapas including seared scallop wrapped with Parma ham and pomelo salad; oyster fritter and green apple; spices chicken and feta cheese roulade and mango chutney; beef and gorgonzola tartlet; seared tuna, poached cherry tomato and chili mayo, and beef timbale and roasted tomato sauce.

with a touch of fusion. For example, Spanish mussels, shrimps and squid with US sea scallops and seaweed noodles or Australian beef massaman with pumpkin and peanuts. Italian favourites are well represented with a quartet of various pastas, porcini mushroom risotto with pan-seared foie gras, black truffle and rocket or the ritzy pizzas with the frutti di mare featuring US sea scallops, prawns, Spanish mussels and Boston lobster. From the Mediterranean kitchen fresh shucked Fine de Claire oysters are served with lemon and condiments or baked Thermidor fashion with hollandaise, English mustard and roasted red peppers.

Main courses offer slow braised Australian beef short rib in red wine, prunes and blue cheese gnocchi or the Mantra signature burger consisting of 100 percent pure Australian Wagyu beef with cheese, onions, semi-dried tomato, iceberg lettuce, fried egg, smoked bacon, pickles and steakhouse fries. Which brings us to the subcontinent and Indian cuisine. Here the tandoor oven yields tandoori lamb rack and king prawns while the curries and dhals offer a myriad of gourmet dishes: Goan prawn curry with tamarind, coconut milk and curry leaves or New Zealand lamb leg slow-cooked with

pickled vegetables in tomato gravy, the list goes on.

Desserts are decadent and delicious. The choices are huge and the designated zone chefs experienced and proficient. The Sunday brunch is a wonderful gourmet affair (B.1,690++).

The gastronomic choices and attention to detail totally deserves its celebrated reputation. The walk-in wine cellar offers the opportunity to select from an inspiring stock of hundreds of labels from across the globe.

The ambiance at Mantra is chic, trendy and seriously cool. It can be relaxed and laid-back in the main dining area, private and intimate snuggled into one of the romantic coves on the upper balcony or an evening of candlelit enjoyment on the al fresco terrace. KINSEN JAPANESE RESTAURANT

An “Oishii” experience – that’s delicious in Japanese This bijou restaurant is situated on Sukhumvit Road just before Nong Nooch Gardens on the approach from Pattaya.

It is truly a family restaurant with father (Chef Tharathorn) in the kitchen, his wife Pichit front of house waiting tables with assistance from their niece (Narawan) to keep the service lively and Chef Arkom manning the sushi/sashimi station.

This restaurant was a recent recommendation for which we are truly thankful. With only 24 covers (with an extra four on the small terrace), it is indeed petite but the menu is anything but – with 10 illustrated pages covering the full gamut of Japanese favourites from maki sushi to yakimono (grilled and pan-fried dishes). We have been back many times since our first visit and felt we weren’t doing our job as food writers if we didn’t pass on the word. Chef

Tharathorn has 20 years of this cuisine under his belt having worked in Japanese kitchens from Tokyo to Turkey to Abu Dhabi before returning home and opening his own restaurant.

Mick and I are firm fans of sashimi and here it's polar fresh and top-notch. We usually order Set C (B.360) which includes a generous selection of salmon, tuna, crab sticks and sea bass presented on a foundation salad of leaves, grated daikon and carrot. Larger parties can order larger sets for B.620 or B.520 with extra servings of a whole variety of succulent, juicy fish. Sushi lovers will not be disappointed; the maki sushi, which is the wrapped toasted seaweed around vinegared rice, comes with various fillings. They include all the fresh fish plus freshwater eels, mixed seafood and that ’60s Los Angeles invention the ubiquitous California roll.

Yakimono (grilled food) comes as fish, shellfish, meat or vegetables usually pierced with a skewer and grilled over an open fire. The medley here is extensive including the universal favourite chicken yakitori, a speciality beef teriyaki, salmon (B.200), whole saba fish or shishamo yaki which is grilled small smelt fish (B.100). Steak is also available either beef, pork, squid or chicken with prices from B.140 for the buta (pork) steak.

Japanese folk love slurping noodles and here at Kinsen you can enjoy oodles of noodles.

Tsukimi literally translates as “viewing the moon”. The egg in this dish represents a full moon surrounded by clouds of thin noodles, while nabeyaki is a bowl of goodness bursting with fishcakes, chicken, mushrooms and other vegetables with an egg topping and shrimp tempura (B.150). The yakisoba is the healthiest option made from fried buckwheat noodles with masses of vegetables and seasoned spices.

While at Kinsen a must-try is one of their curries. Japanese curry is very different from Indian curries. It’s thicker and has a milder flavour but the real secret is using a curry mix from a box and we have been assured that this is truly the case.

Japanese people like to make a lot of dishes from scratch but when it comes to curry not many people do that. The katsu curry is wickedly wonderful. What makes

it stand out from other curries is that the meat or prawns are fried before having the luxurious silky curry sauce slathered all over it.

Prices start from B.100 and rice is always included.

Beer is available in 660 ml bottles of Singha (B.110), Heineken, San Miguel and the Japanese Kirin at B.140. Hot or cold sake is also available. We usually take a bottle of wine with us and have never been charged corkage.

This menu is a cornucopia of Japanese delights. Mick loves the gyoza ground meat dumplings and we both love the salads especially the prawn version which comes in a bowl filled to the brim with carrots, crispy lettuce, cucumber and topped with prawns, hiyashi wakame (thin shreds of seaweed) and a

healthy portion of tobiko fish eggs; it’s a wonderful salad perfected with the wine vinegar and sesame oil dressing.

This is such a find this small family restaurant serving Japanese favourite dishes at extraordinarily wallet friendly prices. Kinsen means “cash or rich” and we wish them every success in their new venture which is rich in flavours, friendliness and their eagerness to please.

Now that the holiday season is over, it is time to get serious about getting into better shape. Our face creates the first impression we give to others most of the time. Having a healthy, relaxed complexion is always a good start. Stress and worries amount to the development of wrinkles and furrows on our faces. With age we also lose underlying fatty tissue and lose collagen. This leads to more skin sagginess. Over time, small skin tags or benign tumors also appear.

Unwanted pigmentation adds to the problem!

Don’t despair; a multitude of treatments exists to help you turn the clock back.

A favorite for many people is Botox. This relaxes the wrinkles and smooths out the appearance of the face. A few simple painless injections will give you the refreshed look for 4-6 months depending on the individual. As the muscles causing the wrinkles are paralyzed by the effect of the toxin from Clostridium botulinum type A, these muscles lose the memory effect that creates the wrinkle. These wrinkles return but not as pronounced as the effect of Botox wears off. Sometimes the intervals between treatments can be extended.

Botox has multiple applications beyond treatment of wrinkles. It can be used to stop muscular spasms like excessive blinking. Excessive sweating can also be controlled.

Small skin tags and benign tumors can be removed with lasers without needing major surgical interventions.

Property When Pattaya’s Condo Market Went Ballistic!

Remember when the Pattaya real estate development scene was taking off like a rocket?

By 2006 prices on land and condos had already doubled and it would triple and in some cases quadruple in the coming few years.

Those were the days and that was what started everything that we see around us today: a huge oversupply of condo units and abandoned development sites.

Yes, a good number of developers just didn’t put the brakes on in time and found themselves with too many unsold units and very few buyers in sight.

But it is not all doom and gloom, as we all know that even this vast supply of condominiums will eventually be sold and Pattaya will be on to its next property boom cycle. From where I am sitting I can see a good number of high-rise condominium towers popping up along the Na Jomtien beachfront over the coming few years.

It might be tough now but it won’t last long, and the next Eastern Seaboard property boom is going to be more than ballistic. I’m thinking supersonic!

So while we are disposing of our available supply of condominiums, let’s take a little stroll down memory lane and look back at the Pattaya property market of a decade ago.

Some of the greatest development on the Eastern Seaboard in 2006

was the ambitious developments and projects going up along Jomtien beach and south to the Bangsarey beach and hills area, including the Silver Lake Winery Group with their Winery and Chateau Resort concept.

In the Na Jomtien area just south of Pattaya was the construction of The Sails Condominium and Ocean Marina Yacht Club’s second condominium tower known as the Portofino. There is no question that major developers already are looking down the Jomtien beachfront, as it is definitely showing itself to be one of the greatest investment potentials for the very near future, and the good beachfront land parcels are going fast. We also looked back to see more high-end housing developments in the area.

The Wongamat Beach area in North Pattaya also was vibrant with the construction of a number of fine resorts and 3- to 5-star condominiums. And in central Pattaya we saw more and more smaller (seven- to eight-story lowrise) boutique condominiums, reflecting demand for the city’s first five-star ‘inner city’ living apartment buildings.

One most notable design and construction group back then was the Nova Group, which designed and built eight low-rise boutique condominiums in the Pattaya area: Nova Mirage I, II & III; Nova

Atrium; Nova Suites; Tara Court; Mayfair Residence, and the Nova Residence Jomtien. All were selling very well. In fact, the Nova Group sold 80 percent (57 of 72) of its Nova Atrium apartments in five months from November 2005 to April 2006.

Coming up soon after for the Nova Group was the Hyde Park Court (first of four buildings), Nova Central and the fantastic Nova Plaza Hotel. Rony Fineman of the Nova Group was saying he was literally turning investors and developers away; he could not find enough construction workers to keep up with the demand!

Another incredible developer at that time was Michael Suttie’s Pattaya Properties Group. In just a matter of about five years, they had turned their small real estate brokerage into a construction and development empire.

It began with their View Talay Villas, a successful ‘modern tropical’ housing estate, and then their View Talay Residences (Buildings 1 through 6). Their next great move was the Majestic Residence, a huge beachfront estate of 65 welldesigned modern tropical homes, with 80 percent of phase I and 50 percent of phase II sold!

Pattaya Properties Group had just begun their skyrocketing climb to success. In fact it is their designs and planning that had made that Pattaya real estate boom go ballistic!

Recently off the drawing board and soon to be the world’s tallest residential building, the Ocean One Tower was set to appear before our very eyes right in the middle of the Jomtien Beach business district.

That represents 91 floors of design expertise!

Ocean One Tower was designed by the prestigious Australian architect firm Woods Bagot Co., Ltd., and featured the structural engineering expertise of Connell Wagner, one of the Asia Pacific’s largest and most experienced multidisciplinary engineering consulting practices.

Together, they were going to change the Pattaya skyline forever, with purchasers already knocking at the door during those days.

If that is not ballistic enough for you: during their recent press launch in Hong Kong, Suttie announced that Ocean One Tower units would start selling at 120,000 baht per square meter when construction started in August 2006. Now that’s an over 40 percent increase in less than eight months. That’s ballistic!

Unfortunately ballistic just wasn’t fast enough as Ocean One Tower never got off the ground.

Looking back 10 years at the Pattaya real estate development scene just makes one realize that we have done it once again a decade later.

Enough looking back as we look forward to the next property super boom where we will surely see some phenomenal designs and construction...one more time!

THAILAND PERMANENT RESIDENCE PERMIT How do foreign nationals qualify for a permanent residence permit?

A foreign national who meets the following qualifications is eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit: 1. Foreign national applicant must hold a passport of his/her current nationality, which was granted a non-immigrant visa and has been permitted to stay in the Kingdom of Thailand on the basis of one-year visa extension for a total of at least three consecutive years up to the date of the submission of the application.

2. Foreign national applicant must have personal qualifications that meet one of the following categories: • Investment category – the foreigner must bring in at least 10 million baht into Thailand to invest in a limited or public company, state-issued security, state enterprise’s security or the stock market; • Working / Business category – the foreigner must be an executive officer such as president of Committee or Committee of a juristic person registered in Thailand with a capital of at least 10 million baht and is authorized as a signatory for such juristic person, up to the date of application submission, for at least one year. The applicant must earn at least 50,000 baht per month for two consecutive years prior to submitting the application. Also, his work must be in an area of interest to the national economy.

Alternatively, the foreigner must earn at least 80,000 baht per month for a period of at least two years, up to the date of application submission, or have been filing tax return for the amount of annual income of 100,000 baht for at least two consecutive years, up to the date of application submission.

He, also, must have held work a permit for at least three consecutive years and worked with the current company for at least one year, up to the date of application submission.

• Humanity Reasons category – the foreigner must be the spouse, parent or child of a permanent resident or a Thai citizen; • Expert or Academic category – the foreigner must hold at least a bachelor’s degree, possesses special ability that is needed and of benefit to this country, and his current position requires him to work at least three consecutive years in Thailand;

• Extra circumstances on a case by case basis 3. The applicant must reveal information on his/ her income, assets, knowledge, vocational ability, and family status in terms of connection with Thai national conditions on national security or others as deem appropriate for the consideration.

4. The applicant must be able to understand and speak the Thai language.

What are the benefits of holding a permanent residence permit?

Foreigners who obtain permanent residence permit enjoy many benefits which include the following: 1. Living permanently in Thailand without obtaining further visa renewals; 2. Eligibility to apply for Thai citizenship after holding a residence permit for five consecutive years; 3. Eligibility of his/her spouse, children, and parents to apply for their own residence permits; 4. Their children born in Thailand automatically acquires Thai nationality; 5. Eligibility to become a director of a Thai public company.

What is the procedure to obtain a permanent residence permit?

Ministry of Interior announces the annual quota of foreign nationals to be issued a residence permit in the Government Gazette each year. The application can then be submitted until the last working day of the year. Applicants must submit the application in person with all the required documents.

Procedures after the applications are accepted 1. The immigration officers will grant the applicants for 180 days extension of stay on the date of application submission first and the next extension will be granted for 180 days until the results of the applications come out from The Immigration Commission.

2. The applicants and those who get involved with the applications will get an appointment card to come for an interview with the immigration officers. The interview includes an oral Thai language proficiency test.

3. The applicants who are 14 years of age on the application submission date is subject to criminal records check according to the following: • Their fingerprint sheets with identity information are forwarded to the Criminal Records Division, Royal Thai Police for the investigation to confirm his/her criminal records.

• Investigation through a watch list system of the Immigration Bureau will be made to determine whether the applicant is a prohibited person.

• They are to be checked whether they are wanted by a foreign warrant of arrest by the Foreign Affairs Division.

Outlook – Student Accommodation Sector – Savills 2015 Report The purpose-built student accommodation sector looks set to continue its strong growth. Student numbers are recovering and are set to increase further with the removal of the cap. With increased numbers, there is the need for more supply. The level of supply required will vary by town and city depending on the strength and type of demand. It will also depend on the quality, location and price of existing supply. We expect the ‘flight to quality’ to continue with higher ranking institutions benefiting most (subject to their expansion plans).

Investment into the sector has increased substantially in 2015 and looks set to continue.

Perhaps the biggest barrier to its continuation will be sourcing opportunities for investment. As competition increases with more actual and potential investors from across the globe looking at the sector, it is likely that we will see some compression in yields.

The biggest risks to the sector are political. The rhetoric around migration is unhelpful and the risks arising from an EU referendum are apparent. Policy makers should acknowledge the important role that higher education students play in both local and national economies. Students also have a major impact on local housing markets. The provision of more student accommodation can play a role in solving the housing issues and should be considered as part of a larger solution.

Higher education is an important contributor to many local economies.

Nationally the sector contributes £40 billion to gross domestic product, and students are a key component of population growth and housing demand in many locations.

Both central and local decision makers therefore need to carefully consider the financial and housing implications of any policies relating to higher education. We have analysed all local authorities in Great Britain and selected a subset of 76 that have a significant student population. Within this subset, we have calculated that the average contribution of higher education to local economies, as measured by gross value added (GVA), is 6 percent of the total.

The traditional university powerhouses of Oxford and Cambridge put their corresponding local authorities in the top two spots, with higher education contributing an estimated 21 percent and 17 percent respectively.

Elsewhere in the top 10 are Canterbury (University of Kent), Ceredigion (Aberystwyth University), Lancaster (Lancaster University) and Bath and North East Somerset (University of Bath and Bath Spa University), all large universities in otherwise small local economies. Alongside their contribution to economic growth, students also have an impact on local population growth and the housing market. In some areas, students have been a large proportion of population growth and even counterbalanced population declines in two areas. Ceredigion is one of those areas, with its student age population growing by over 1,600 between 2001 and 2011, more than offsetting a fall of 600 residents of other ages. Dundee City (home to the University of Dundee and Abertay).

London Supply There were approximately 367,000 students studying in London during the 2013/14 academic year, according to HESA data. Of those, 77 percent were studying full time, 28 percent were from overseas and the majority of full-time students (75 percent) lived either at home or in the private rented sector. This figure was slightly down on the previous academic year (378,000) but by a similar percent as student numbers across the UK (-1.7 percent).

Looking ahead, it is likely that London will continue to be an attractive city for students from across the UK and around the world. However, there is the risk that prospective students will be put off by the cost of living in the capital. The pressure on London’s housing stock is particularly acute.

New housing supply has failed to meet required levels and so the pressure on living costs has continued to build post recession. House prices have risen by 46 percent and private sector rents by 19 percent over the last five years, according to the ONS. Other measures put rental growth even higher. With increased competition in the private rented sector from other household groups, purpose-built student housing plays an important and growing role in London’s housing market.

With 70,000 purpose-built beds in the capital (40,000 university managed and 30,000 privately managed), the sector houses around a quarter of London’s full-time students. With the pressure on London’s housing market expected to continue and student numbers likely to increase, the sector should be well placed to expand further.

Thailand to boost profile at ITB 2016 with strong teamwork

by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to strengthen its partnership with the Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) and Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) to enhance the impact of the strategic marketing to promote Thailand as a “Quality Leisure Destination through Thainess.”

The delegation for the Thailand Networking Lunch organised at the ITB Berlin 2016, was led by HE Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports, together with the heads of three organisations, Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of TAT; Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, president of AOT, and Charamporn Jotikasthira, president of THAI. The Networking Lunch, attended by 150 senior executives and representatives of the German and European travel trade and media as well as related Thai officials and private sector representatives, is one of the primary events organised

at the ITB Berlin by the Thai contingent to outline new plans and strategies and network with buyers and operators.

The European market is projected to be a key player in achieving the success of the plan to enhance the image of Thailand as a “Quality Leisure Destination through Thainess”. This means

growing average visitor expenditure, average length of stay and repeat visitation.

This year, Thailand is targeting 60.6 billion euros (2.41 trillion baht) in revenue. Of that total, 39.2 billion euros (1.56 trillion baht) will come from international markets and 21.36 billion euros (0.85 trillion baht) from domestic travel.

Germany is Thailand’s third

highest source market from Europe.

In 2015, Thailand welcomed 760,604 German visitors, an increase of 6.34 percent over 2014.

This generated tourism income of 1.27 billion euros (50.6 billion baht), a growth of 8.04 percent over 2014.

In 2014, German visitors had an average length of stay of 17.5 days and daily expenditure per person of

94.4 euros (3,756 baht). This is one of the highest average lengths of stay of all nationalities, while the overall average length of stay in Thailand was 9.8 days.

This year, Thailand is targeting a 4.38 percent increase in tourism revenue from the Europe market as a whole, and a 3.87 percent growth from the German market specifically.

Business News Travellers paid 8 percent less on hotel prices in Thailand foreign visitors also saw a drop, as seen in Phuket by 14 percent to 2,754 baht, while Pattaya and Chiang Mai dropped by 9 percent to 2,110 baht and 8 percent to 2,170 baht, respectively.

The latest Hotel Price Index™ (HPI™) from Hotels.com™ shows that average prices paid (including taxes and fees) per night for hotel accommodation in Thailand fell 8 percent in 2015 as compared to 2014, due partly to Thailand's low inflation rate and lower global oil prices. The global Index sat at 114 for 2015 and is closing the gap on the previous peak of 117 in 2007, the year before the global economic crisis.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the number of travellers to Thailand surged in 2015. Visitor arrivals increased by 20.4 percent over 2014, totalling 29.8 million, driven by demand from the Chinese market. The 8 percent fall in hotel prices paid in Thailand was good news for travellers who found even more affordable rates at most destinations.

Travellers to cities outside of Thailand also saw a decrease in prices per room, per night, such as in Kuala Lumpur by 20 percent to 2,087 baht, Seoul by 19 percent to 3,232 baht, Bali by 19 percent to 2,790 baht, Singapore by 18 percent to 4,527 baht and Taipei by 13 percent to 3,279 baht.

Travellers paid less in 95 percent of Thai destinations Hotel prices paid in 95 percent of Thai cities dropped in the Hotels.com HPI report for 2015. What the travellers to and within Thailand paid per night was 2,968 baht, down from 3,226 baht in 2014. Among Thai cities analysed in the HPI, Kanchanaburi and Koh Samet saw the highest declines at 39 percent. The only destinations where travellers experienced an increase were Pranburi and Koh Ngai, by 7 percent to

Youth Focus How often do you read stories to your child?

Reading aloud to your child is a priceless time spent that enhances strength and joy in the parent- child relationship. When you spend time reading books to your child, the bonding experience is unbeatable, this is when they get your full attention to themselves and children love getting attention from the parents because it gives your child a sense of love and intimacy. This feeling of intimacy, the feeling of being loved and getting attention promotes the child’s EQ. A child is never too young for a shared story. What better way to build sweet memories than snuggling up together with a book? So don't make reading time a "have to."

Make it a "want to." Story reading has long been known for many benefits, fosters parent-child bond, boosts child’s brain development, enhances language skills and sparks the child’s creativity and imagination, also improves concentration and attention span and cultivates the love for books.

So snuggle up, prop your child on your lap and enjoy the reading.

Reading stories to your child helps jump-start their brain development. Story reading can make many brain valuable connections. Children are exposed to language by hearing words that are read

from the stories and pictures, thus helping them to make sense of what they hear and see.

Numerous studies have shown that reading stories improve strong oral language skills that build the foundation for emergent literacy skills.

Reading stories help children imagine character in the story therefore, stimulates their creativity and makes them more imaginative. Interesting pictures and words pattern helps stimulate children to talk about he/she is seeing and thinking, help train them to stay focus. This ignites their curiosity about people, places, animals and things. Moreover, this reinforces them to explore, discover and wanting to ask more questions which stimulates their thinking and learning skills.

Reading stories to your children helps making them acquainted with language as well as improving communication skills. Children learn to make

links between pictures and stories with the sound of the words they hear. Through the medium of storytelling, children learn to make connections of hand gestures, facial expression and sound effects as they visualized and imagine the character of the story.

Reading story is great way for children to expend their energy in a productive way while they choose to sit down and read a book. This helps them to maintain and focus their attention. Story reading is wonderful way to promote concentration since it encourages child to listen attentively and promotes longer attention span. In addition, it also assists them in learning to listen for important cues which promote memory skills.

So get started, start young.

Remember reading is fun way to spend quality time together.

A MAD Night at GIS Garden International School (GIS) celebrated its students' incredible talents with an evening of Music, Arts and Drama.

The MAD (Music, Arts, and Drama) night was held on March 23 in the school's main hall.

Before the show, parents saw an art exhibition from IB students and enjoyed wine and cheese.

The show was an excellent mix of music and drama, set on two different stages. Among the first half stars was the school's Chamber Choir singing 'Autumn Leaves', the Choir singing 'Pompeii', and

After a short interval, the second half opened with a rousing performance by the GIS Samba Band, and then included scenes from 'Cider with Rosie', the orchestra playing 'It Don't Mean a Thing', and a fantastic performance of 'Cell Block Tango' from the musical 'Chicago'.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories The official cause of the death of Marilyn Monroe is suicide and that’s still the most widely believed explanation. After all, she had tried it four times before and the actress was clearly prone to violent mood swings.

On the other hand, there are many forensic facts at odds with the suicide notion unless you can believe Marilyn making up a barbiturate

enema and administering it herself. If she did manage that, it’s the only such suicide ever to be recorded.

Another problem with suicide is that she was in good spirits in the month of her death in 1962, was making plans for future movies and planning a remarriage to Joe DiMaggio. Doesn’t sound like suicide eh?

Maybe it was an accident.

Incidentally, there is much less circumstantial evidence that Robert Kennedy had bedded her as well.

Some writers have argued that Marilyn had unrealistic notions about becoming First Lady and was proving some-

thing of an embarrassment.

Her letters and phone calls to the Kennedy brothers had become both tiresome and risky.

So maybe the president decided to terminate the relationship with Marilyn, absolutely permanently! Knowing all about his many affairs, Marilyn after all could have brought him down in a sea of scandal.

Maybe Robert Kennedy delivered a message to Marilyn about his brother’s desire to finish the relationship.

Some sources, including a policeman, placed him at her home on the night of her demise. Of course, Marilyn might have been very upset by the news Robert Kennedy brought and decided to kill herself on the spur of the moment. So we are back to the suicide theory.

Then again, maybe the secret service killed Marilyn to cover up the president’s indiscretions. In favour of that theory is the claim that records of phone calls and secret reports have been destroyed.

Against the idea is the fact that there is no evidence the mob hit the woman with a rectal enema. Somehow it sounds absurd to all but the

most determined conspiracy theorists.

In spite of the huge volume of books, articles and TV shows, we shall likely never know the truth. Following the autopsy – itself a treasure trove for conspiracy addicts – Marilyn’s body was released to her family.

Her mother, who was institutionalized, did not take custody of the body.

he continued to love up to her death.

On August 8 1962, she was laid to rest in Los Angeles’ Westwood Memorial Park in the Corridor of Memories.

Thousands lined the streets and grieved for the icon who was arguably the world’s number one movie legend.

In a poll of 2009, a majority of people interviewed said the most likely explanation of the death was a tragic medical mistake, one admittedly followed by a gigantic cover-up.

American dining and sports bar Hooters has proved it is on the right track when it comes to success with four wins at the Toyo 3K Racing Car Thailand 2016 Championship; an impressive achievement especially since Hooters was a firsttime entrant in the races. Experienced Swiss driver, Urs Schoenenberger, claimed victory at

the Pattaya Bira Track over the three-day event from March 4-6, 2016. Driving a BMW E36 with a 3000 cc turbo engine and 490 horsepower, plus a BMW E30 with 2500 cc turbo engine and 435 horsepower, Urs took home wins in Class F5A, F6T and C62 for Hooters, as well as second place in the C6 open class.

Combining with Colin’s Golf Bar we had an excellent number of 33 on the starting sheet for the trip to the best value for money golf course in Pattaya at the minute – Greenwood.

The 331 highway is slowly improving and delays are minimal which enabled us to get to the golf course in just under one hour and at 400 baht green fee for PSC members it is certainly worth the extra few minutes’ drive. Surprisingly the course was not too busy and our first group was able to tee off on B1 five minutes before our scheduled 10:33 am tee time. It was hot and humid so water (except Mr Pickles) intake was crucial to maintain concentration and as usual the golf course was in fine shape although a little dry on some fairways and the greens were at times tricky but well maintained. There were no major delays and most of our groups completed their rounds in under four and a quarter hours.

We had two flights – A Flight for handicaps of 0 to 16 playing off the white tees and B Flight for players with handicaps of 17 and over playing from the yellow tees with four places in each flight. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the par threes and longest first putts on the B9 and C9 greens.

Once again it was Phil Davies who “got the chocolates” in A Flight with a fine 39 points and with two golfers on 36 points the countback awarded second place to Paul Smith (18-point last nine and 13 points on the last six holes) from Peter Kelly (18-point last nine and 11 points on the last six holes) in third spot. Another countback was needed to determine fourth place with two on 35 points and this resulted in Paul Walia (19-point last nine) just shading Pat Regan (17-point last nine). In the B Flight it was Tony Cook who was returning from a spell due to injury (beware the injured golfer) and did it in fine style with the best score of the day which gave him first place, four points ahead of the rapidly improving Satita “New St” in second spot and Vaulton Reece was third with 36 points.

Countback time again with two players on 34 points and that saw Murray Edwards (19-point last nine) grab fourth place from his old mate John Tallett (17-point last nine).

Larry Gibb Returns To Form!

Another good field of 27 golfers was signed up with Phantom and Colin’s to tackle the challenging Mountain Shadow Golf Course and with a later tee time of 10:48 am it meant a bit of a sleep in for most. We arrived at the course after a 47-minute drive and found it quite busy with another golf society directly in front of us but we were able to send our first group away pretty much on time. The weather was good although fairly hot as usual but with a nice breeze conditions were pretty good. The course needs some rain as it was very dry on many fairways but the greens were well maintained and fairly quick at times. With all the traffic on the course the going was slow and most of our groups got round in about four and a half hours.

We had two flights – A Flight for handicaps of 0 to 18 playing off the blue tees and B Flight for players with handicaps of 19 and over also playing from the blue tees with three places in each flight. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th and 18th greens.

The golf course was definitely the winner on the day as no-one played to their handicap or better and in the A Flight it was Peter Hynard who was victorious with 35 points with Mark Cooper finishing second with 34 points. With three golfers on 32 points a countback was needed to determine third spot and that resulted in Nick Shaw (20-point last nine) prevailing from Paul Smith (16-point last nine) and Robbie Taylor (15-point last nine). In the B Flight another countback was required with two on 34 points and the result of that was that Larry Gibb (19-point last nine and 13 points on the last six holes) was declared the winner with Mogens Melander (19-point last nine and 12 points on the last six holes) taking second place and Nigel Harrison was third with 33 points.

Local Sports 2016 FEI World Jumping Challenge Event No 1 Thailand

by Zherwin Acosta, DVM Horseshoe Point Resort Pattaya once again started their equestrian calendar for 2016 with a huge turnout of exactly 100 horses registered and more than 300 entries in a three-day event when they hosted the 2016 FEI World Jumping Challenge Event No 1 last March 18-20 with Category A (120-130 cm), Category B (110-120 cm) and C (100-110 cm). This event also featured dressage competitions for children and adults.

This is the 38th year that the challenge has been held worldwide, and

was created to provide less experienced riders to compete in an international level without leaving their respective countries.

The FEI World Jumping Challenge made a big contribution to develop jumping, an equestrian discipline in the Olympics, and the most popular of the equestrian sport worldwide.

This is the first of three events organized in Thailand based on a new three-event format that was introduced last year, with a slight change, where athletes now only keep the two best results, giving them a chance to drop the lowest result or skip one event in case the
