lthough a public decision by the British government isn’t expected till later this year, insiders say it is certain that the whole remaining British embassy compound in Wireless Road, Bangkok, is to be sold to the highest bidder. The current eight acre premises, which are prime real estate, are estimated to be worth at least 200 million pounds.

Embassy officials first took up residence there in 1922.

A four-acre frontage of the embassy, located at the intersection of Wireless and Ploenchit roads, was sold in 2006 for 50 million pounds to Tiang Chirathivat Real Estate, part of Central Group, which owned a neighboring flagship retail property. At the time, the sale was one of Thailand’s largest property sales ever but, in the last 10 years, prime real estate in central Bangkok has soared even further in value.

The Wireless Road site is famous for its iconic buildings, including the ambassador’s historic residence, tropical gardens and a 1903 statue of Queen Victoria which was shrouded by the Japanese during their occupation of Bangkok in the early 1940s. However, she was said to be able to keep an eye on what was going on through a small tear in the sheets. Many old-time British expats recall with affection the numerous grand events which used to be held on

the embassy premises, including the Ploenchit Fairs. Although smaller garden parties have continued to be held from time to time, security concerns have kept these to a minimum in recent years.

It is not uncommon for the cashstrapped British government to seek cash savings in its overseas missions. In 2005, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced that 30 diplomatic posts in the Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean would be downgraded to

combat terrorism, weapons proliferation and global warming. In 2012 it was announced that the British consulate in Jomtien would be closed, followed in 2014 by the news that the long-standing Chiang Mai consulate would also be shut down. Various reasons were given at the time, but included budgetary savings, the need to centralize services in Bangkok and the importance of putting more resources into emergency consular cases.

News More Burmese workers arrested

German tourist robbed

German national Lutz Mohler, aged 45, was beaten and robbed of 4,000 baht by two katoeys along Jomtien Beach Road.

The suspects were later apprehended by police and identified as Phumin Saranat, aged 20 from Sakon Nakhon province, and Nopporn Jitsom, aged 21 from Chonburi.

Mohler said he was approached and struck by the ladyboys and was unable to escape, feeling dizzy and falling to the ground.

The victim was sent to Pattaya Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The suspects confessed to police.

Distraught lover ends it all

Following an anonymous tip-off, police raided the Abou Abdollah restaurant in the Pratumnak area of town and arrested 10 Mynamar males and 9 females who are believed to have been working without the required documentation. Police then saw an

Arabian man trying to flee and questioned him. He said he worked illegally as a receptionist for 10,000 baht monthly but added that this rate of pay was disgraceful in this inflation-hit era. The paperwork on this nefarious group was still being processed at press time.

Drug party busted in Jomtien

Pattaya police raided a resort in Jomtien based on a tip that a drug pool party was taking place. Some 33 teenagers from Bangkok were found partying and taking drugs, 19 of whom tested positive

for ketamine (“Ya K� on the street). One imbiber, Montri Poubon, made it known that he was a relative of a Bangkok police official.

He and the rest were taken to the police station.

Sleeping lottery seller robbed Odd Si-in, 43, reported to police that someone had entered his rented room whilst he was sleeping and taken 10,000 baht cash, 100 lottery tickets, 2 mobile phones and various personal cards. He said he had retired early as he had been on his feet all day and may have forgotten to lock the door. Police said they had found a broken window shutter, hypothesizing that the thief had entered via this route.

Fire of uncertain cause

A Thai woman jumped from the balcony of a hotel on Soi Buakhao after an argument with her Australian boyfriend, Mark Dennis Lane. Police said that Namfon Korpol, 27, had visited Walking Street alone and had returned drunk which had distressed her lover. Following the argument, Namfon said she wanted to die and jumped, the efforts of her boyfriend to save her notwithstanding. Apparently they had lived together for one year prior to this tragic outcome.

Firemen needed to squirt for an hour in order to extinguish a fire on Soi Khao Talo after neighbors saw smoke pouring out of a dwelling and concluded all was not well. The house owner, Usa Inpang, 53, told investigators that she was out at the time but received a phone call from her son asking her to

return if she still wanted a habitable residence. When she tried to question him about this odd statement, he abruptly hung up. He was not on the premises when the fire brigade arrived and the police are looking for him to ascertain more about this bizarre happening.

News Bosch plans Thailand’s premier fuel injector factory

Robert Bosch Automotive Technologies (Thailand) Co. Ltd., will build Thailand’s first-ever fuel injector factory boasting annual production capacity of one million units to accommodate the country’s growing base of OEM vehicle manufacturers.

Construction of the ‘smart factory’ at the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate will be completed by year’s end. The facility will apply state-of-the art Bosch’s proprietary injection technology, and will

feature electronically-controlled material flow, automated end-of-line testing and parts calibration.

Bosch developed the first mass produced, electronic fuel injection system, the D-Jetronic, in 1967, and remains a fuel injection systems leader with the K-Jetronic, L-Jetronic and Motronic systems. The company says that in the aftermarket, more than 85 percent of the European nameplate vehicles use Bosch fuel injectors.

News Drivers’ license test rumor clarified Reward offered

for elusive robber

A rumor appeared online that the Department of Land Transport will soon change the passing score of the written test to secure a driving licence to 100 percent. But Nopparat Sornchaiyakorn, head of Department of Land Transport in Banglamung, discredited the rumor. The rules are unchanged, requiring a passing score of 90--which means

applicants must get 45 correct items out of 50 questions.

Same rules apply for the extension of one-year license to a full five-year permit: no need for a written exam, just a medical certificate, a vision exam, and a reflex test. Those whose licenses expire for more than a year must re-take the written exam.

Bali Hai watched at Songkran

Extra police, numbering 130 officers, were on duty at the main pier over Songkran to oversee tourist safety during the busy period. They checked the safety of ships prior to sailing and searched for illegal drugs. In a new move this

year, Chinese translators were on hand to explain to the crowds what exactly was going on. It is estimated that three quarters of the visitors to Koh Larn are residents of the Chinese mainland.

A 100,000-baht reward is offered to those who provide police with information leading to the arrest of a man who robbed 8.8 million baht from a Samco’s armored vehicle last month. A bag containin g the cash was later found in a wooded area on Soi Boonsampan 14. The suspect, seen in CCTV footage, is 25 to 35 years old, 165-170 cm tall, and of medium build.

Police distributed flyers and are asking the public to report relevant information or videos to the nearest police station.

Car slams into motorbike showroom

French national Michelle Boudoux lost control of his car and crashed into Mityon Pattaya Motorcycle showroom on Pattaya Third Road corner South Pattaya Road. Estimated damages were estimated at about 500,000 baht, including 10

motorcycles. Aphaphan, Thai wife of the 71-year-old driver, said they were on their way home when her husband lost control of the car. He tried to stop but hit the gas instead of the brakes.

A Chinese national on Walking Street rebuffed the charms of a group of ladyboys, only to later discover that he had been relieved of a necklace and ring worth 45,000 baht. He reported the incident to police.

In a separate incident, Indian national Rajendra Gupta complained to police that he, too, had been accosted by a group of katoeys who took his necklace worth 40,000 baht. The victim had been walking along Beach Road near Royal Garden Plaza.

Naveen Bansal, aged 25, an Indian national, was robbed by two ladyboys who took the man’s wallet containing 1,200 USD, 5,000 Indonesian rupiah, and 1,500 Mauritian rupee.

Cambodian Tourist robbed on Songkran commits suicide

A Cambodian man jumped from the sixth floor of a Jomtien hotel and later died. Police questioned a resident, 47-year-old Graham Brett Stickells from South Africa, who said that the man, whom he had been dating for several months, came to see him, then walked out to the terrace and inexplicably threw himself off.

News Nong Nooch joins flower parade

The Grim Reaper Nong Nooch Garden and Resort Pattaya participated in the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek: Bulbflower Parade in the Netherlands. This year’s theme was Flowers and Fashion 2016.

This was the first time that Thailand took part in the event to promote Pattaya tourism. Pattaya City and K Bank were the main sponsors.

Scale of the issue The Thai government does not publicize the numbers of deaths and it is not even clear whether or how the data is collected. Also, embassies do not normally publicize the information. But comments from the British Foreign Office two years ago suggest that about 350 UK citizens die in Thailand every year. The total figure for all foreigners nationwide may be in the region of 2,000 annually.

Data on Pattaya No agency compiles comprehensive data on the number of foreign deaths in Pattaya or why they occur. It is risky to rely on local media reports as they tend to highlight the unusual and ignore the mundane. One local hospital reported that it sees about two foreign deaths per week, but this particular institution is not the largest by any means. Generally speaking, hospitals are not keen to discuss publicly deaths on their premises.

Certainly, there are several farang fatalities in Pattaya every month.

Why deaths occur Lifestyle diseases – heart attacks, strokes, alcohol-related diseases – are the most common and rarely receive any media publicity unless the stricken individual was famous locally or internationally. Hospitals estimate that about half such deaths occur in hospitals and the rest, particularly if sudden, at home or in hotels.

Accidents too The next most-common reason concerns accidents. Resorts such as Pattaya are notorious for motorbike crashes, sometimes fuelled by alcohol, and it is also true that the engines of typical machines here are larger than those in Europe. Also to be considered are sea accidents and accidental drowning of which Pattaya has had its fair share in recent years. Accidental overdoses of illegal substances are another cause to remember.

Bangkok Hospital Pattaya hosted the fourth iRescue to train rescuers, volunteers and municipal officials in first aid. More than 50 participants were instructed on emergency practices, with the focus on assisting tourists.

Suicidal tendencies The most common way of self-inflicted death appears to be a leap from a tall building in a fit of depression. In spite of media reports, it is doubtful if there are more suicides than in any other world city of Pattaya’s size. Other causes include deliberate overdosing and, more rarely, gunshot wounds. It is not always clear whether a death was self-inflicted or suicide.

For example, many condominium units have low balconies and accidents have been known to occur, especially if alcohol is in evidence.

Murder too Although murders of foreigners receive lots of publicity, the phenomenon is still uncommon. The main reason appears to be strong disagreements between a foreigner and a Thai national – possibly disputes about money – but other causes include violent rape or a contested robbery. It seems that murders of foreigners by other foreigners are very rare.

Autopsies usual Wherever a body is discovered, the police will write a report of which a copy is lodged with the appropriate embassy, if known. The police also have the power to insist on an autopsy. This will invariably be required unless the deceased person died in hospital with a documentary trail of the fatal disease. Autopsies on foreigners are normally conducted at the Royal Thai Police Hospital in Bangkok. Foreigners dying in Pattaya are taken there by ambulance or by the Sawangboriboon Foundation.

Role of embassies They don’t normally get too involved and their role is largely restricted to issuing a “letter of release” which permits the next-of-kin to make the funeral arrangements and to have the body removed from the Police Hospital. If the death is controversial or disputed, embassies don’t get involved in the detail except to offer translation services and to recommend Thai lawyers. However, huge international publicity in the past has caused embassies to play a bigger role in individual murder cases.

Thailand is stepping up efforts to bring an end to illegal trade in ivory and ivory products. The country has strengthened laws to comply with the Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Implementing the National Ivory Action Plans, Thailand has amended the National Ivory Act of 2015 to recognise African elephants as protected species and to regulate all ivory trade in or passing through Thailand. Any domesticated elephant ivory and ivory products sold or in

transit in Thailand must be accompanied by identification certificates and proof that the bearer is in legal possession or has evidence from an approved dealer. However, it remains illegal to export any domestic elephant ivory or ivory products. Offenders face up to three years in confinement and up to six million baht in fines, or both.

To create greater awareness, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has released a series of videos aimed at warning travelers of the regulations and penalties.

Who pays?

Most embassies will not pay for hospital or funeral costs. They expect the next-of-kin or friends to do that and will facilitate contact with interested persons overseas. Where this does not happen, the Thai authorities normally arrange a pauper’s cremation or even a burial. The Sawangborboon Foundation, for example, retains a common burial area in Naklua which is periodically cleared and the bones cremated. A typical Thai cremation in a temple costs between 30,000 and 100,000 baht depending on the location, the funeral director and the type of ritual and the number of monks hired for the occasion.

News UK embassy to be sold Continued from page 1

A long-serving staff member at the British embassy in Bangkok told Pattaya Today, “It’s common knowledge the remaining parts of the embassy will be sold off to create cash for the UK government. The current period of consultation is just a formality to save face and will conclude that the mega-windfall is needed to pay for vital investment elsewhere in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s worldwide estate.”

The source added that the selloff was also an indication of Britain’s declining prestige and importance in today’s world.

But observers also say that the need for a large British embassy in Bangkok has withered in recent years. Parts of the embassy’s traditional roles, such as issuing passports or granting visas to Thais, have been privatized or handed to outside agencies based in Trendy House Bangkok. Even support for British nationals

in distress has been reduced with much less emphasis on front-line personal services and strong suggestions to read on-line information instead.

Recurrent statements by the British government have stressed that such moves apply to all missions overseas, not just in Thailand.

Embassy staff and remaining services will relocate either to a smaller compound in Bangkok or, more likely, to some characterless office block along with most other, smaller diplomatic missions in the metropolis.

The recentlyretired British ambassador, Mark Kent, is moving to the same role in Argentina and reportedly said he would miss the majestic residence which had been his home for four years. Kent’s replacement in Thailand is Brian Davidson.

There are rumours of a public petition to try and save the embassy site from the sell-off, but the track record of such campaigns in Thailand is not encouraging.

Pattaya Tourist Police trained

The Pattaya Tourist Police Volunteers held a training and workshop in Nong Nooch Garden and Resort on how to protect tourists. Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh reiterated that it is important for the volunteers to look after the tourists’ safety in the city now that the Pattaya officials are trying to promote and increase tourism.

The training included self-defense, how to search and arrest suspected criminals, how to effectively perform their duties as volunteers and other safety and security measures.

Six-wheeler truck in the pool Two teens killed Police set up on motorbike checkpoints

Facebook user Sermsak Posayajinda posted in his page that Cartoon Network Amazone let a filthy 6-wheeler truck in their pool while guests were swimming. He also said that guests were surprised and confused. Cartoon Network Amazone explained that workers had come to make repairs in the pool and apologised for any inconvenience

Two teenagers were injured and died in a motorbike accident on Thepprasit Road. Pattaya police volunteer Attacjai Keawsaad said that the boys were part of a group of teenagers fighting along Thepprasit. When police arrived on the scene, the two victims fled on a motorcycle and crashed.

Stopped by police at a Third Road checkpoint, two teenagers on a motorbike were found in possession of yaba tablets and crystal meth. The suspects said that they bought the drugs from a Thai woman in a bar for 250 baht per pill. The boys were arrested.

News Mayor opens Kong Khao festival Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome led the opening of the Kong Khao rice festival at Lan Pho Park in Naklua.

Kong Khao is celebrated on the same day as the Songkran festival in Pattaya. Locals dressed in traditional Thai costumes or Songkran shirts brought food and drinks to share during a mini concerts.

Thai celebrity Mario Maurer invites Chinese and ASEAN travellers to experience Thailand The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to target young travellers in China and three ASEAN countries with an expanded marketing campaign featuring popular entertainment celebrity Mario Maurer.

Launched on April 19 in Bangkok, the “T-Pop” campaign will see Maurer participating in a number of high-profile activities and events in China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam where he has a fan following of nearly one million in each country and more than 5 million in China.

Known officially as “Experience Thailand with Mario Maurer”, the campaign will continue until March 2017.

It will include a number of media functions, dinners and other events in Beijing, Guangzhou, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta.

Maurer is the son of a Thai mother and German father, who has generated millions of youth followers over mainstream and social media as a model and star.

A successful campaign with him was carried out only

in China in 2015 and is being expanded to Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines this year.

Yuthasak Supasorn, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor said, “The next generation of potential travellers is going to be young people, especially within Asia. We are happy that Mario Maurer has agreed to work with us in promoting tourism to Thailand amongst this new emerging market.”

The marketing and PR activities are projected to generate several thousand “likes” and “shares”, giving Thailand millions of Baht worth of publicity across blogs and websites, newspaper and magazine articles, and TV/ radio.

China is already Thailand’s largest and fastest growing market with 7.9 million arrivals in 2015 and projected at 10.5 million in 2016. In turn, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, are the three most populous ASEAN countries, with a sizeable demographic profile of young people.

Mounting stray-dog population poses threats Despite local efforts to confront the menace of stray dogs in Pattaya, their numbers are escalating and the threat is becoming more formidable: the majority of strays carry the rabies virus, according to Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development.

The department said the growing population of stray dogs has surpassed 700,000 nationwide, causing a number of issues including waste, traffic accidents and diseases.

As previously reported in Pattaya Today, the Pattaya Animal Coalition (PAC) and Pattaya City Hall initiated a program to vaccinate and sterilize canines roaming neighborhoods from North Pattaya to Jomtien. But progress is slow and growth of the

street-dog population is rapid because most animals have not been sterilized.

One female dog can typically produce more than 10 pups a year, thus exacerbating the challenge further.

Most daunting is the fear that untold thousands of street dogs in Pattaya, in packs and individually, may spawn an outbreak of rabies, especially at this time of year.

The public is urged to exercise caution. Once a person is bitten and begins showing signs and symptoms of rabies, the disease is nearly always fatal. For this reason, anyone who may be at risk should receive rabies vaccines immediately. The deadly rabies virus attacks the nervous system in both humans and animals and can spread rapidly.

Snap Judgment Water Water Nowhere The current drought, notwithstanding the odd downpour here and there, is said to be the most serious in 20 years. We are constantly bombarded with photos of parched rice fields, dead crops or animals and dried-up dams. Locally, in Pattaya, observers constantly refer to the shrinking water levels at the Mabprachan-area lakes. The local water authority from time to time threatens to disconnect supplies of the precious liquid at certain times of the day or night.

For over a year now, we have heard the plaintiff cries of the government to save water by not planting rice, choosing crops that use less water or just taking more care to reduce demand in the home.

There are also regular reports of possible water rationing in some areas and demands that revelers at the annual Songkran festival avoid getting involved in water fights. Thus we are reminded that the original and gentle Songkran tradition was a far cry from the antics of contemporary hoodlums in our bigger cities and resorts.

Last month, out of the blue, was a statement from an official at the irrigation bureau who assured us that there would be enough water for consumption until July when the rainy season starts, or is at any rate supposed to! The deputy director said that the remaining 7.4 million billion cubic metres in all dams nationally will be enough for the whole country for the next few months. Until then, we must by necessity rely on natural rain or even the artificial kind induced by special aircraft.

The problem with optimistic forecasts is that they discourage people in cities from even thinking it’s a good idea to save water.

The only exception might be bulk buying of bottles of water to protect the household against a bon-rainy day. The government is clearly concerned about hording water and has insisted that the price of bottled water must not raise. We will see. There are already reports of some bottling manufacturers filling up their reserve tanks at their premises. The last time bottled water began to run out in the shops and stores was – a paradox indeed – in 2011 when there was a major flooding problem on the central plains and outer Bangkok. At that time, the plastic bottle producers said their plants were waterlogged and unable to operate.

If nature fails to deliver by July 2016, the plan appears to be to dig deeper for supplies and to construct 4,000 artesian wells in accordance with the government edict. Another suggestion is to make the reservoirs a little bigger and to discourage buildings being erected where they might prevent water from draining away into lakes where it could be collected. The interior minister, Anupong Paojinda, clearly thinks there is a looming problem as he recently instructed every government agency to be prepared for a more serious drought and possible water shortages in villages and towns.

The minister did not forget to warn farmers not to grow high waterconsuming plants and advised the general public not to waste water.

Some Cabinet ministers, wary of banning Songkran which would never work in any case, suggested that people should abandon the modern practice of water splashing and instead return to the traditional watersprinkling to ensure that taps in the homes don’t run dry. Even so, nobody seems to have reminded the general public that underground water-carrying pipes throughout the country are so old and even broken that up to 50 percent is lost.

Meanwhile, another problem is looming. The National Disaster Warning Council has urged the government to be honest with the people, especially in Bangkok, as residents are unlikely to have enough clean water. The reason is that the Chao Phraya river has become salty owing to salt water intrusion: if the situation intensifies, tap water supplies will definitely be compromised. Of course, the whole thing depends on the weather. Early storms would rectify a worrying situation but there is no consensus on the likelihood of that happening. Some say May rains are a certainty, others point to the El Nino phenomenon and the prospect of a prolonged drought.

According to some quotes, Thailand is one of the top 10 highest water users in the world, especially in cities. Whilst people in the provinces consume only about 50 litres a day, those in the capital use four times as much. Perhaps this is why it is so dangerous to tell Bangkok residents there is no reason to panic. With statistics like that, there is every reason to be worried about the medium and long term consequences. It is likely that the reassuring words for Bangkok and other urban centres, including Pattaya, are designed to protect the tourist industry. The last thing the government wants is to see vacations being cancelled on a big scale because washing and drinking facilities cannot be guaranteed.

Last year, the rainy reason was delayed until September. In 2008 the rains came only later, in October, and were not that heavy in any case. The only water-bonus year was 2011 when the water authorities during the floods could not discharge it from the dams quickly enough.

Prime Minister Prayut recently said that much of the problem was that earlier governments had ignored the water shortage problem which led to the ongoing crisis in 2016. Sadly, not even the invocation of Section 44 of the interim constitution can solve this particular scenario. Let’s pray for early downpours this year.

College students help out

Students of Pattaya Technical College joined forces with the Department of Land Transport to provide a 24-hour checking service on vehicles during the Songkran holiday. The idea was to check whether or not cars, vans and motorbikes were in

roadworthy condition during the peak time of year for accidents and road fatalities. The service was designed to be helpful, not punitive, with advice being given out freely by the youthful and enthusiastic volunteers.

Mediterranean Tapas at the Top This penthouse restaurant is spectacularly located on the 23rd floor of Pattaya Hill Resort. The panoramic views from its culinary eerie are simply stunning. From 3.00 pm when the heat of the day slowly gives way to a magnificent sunset encompassing the night skyscape of both Pattaya and Jomtien Bays, this is the place to be. The wrap-around terrace affords a 360 degree vista and the rustic interior offers a cool, laid back area from which to gaze out over the landscape below. The new owners of this lofty eatery are Peter Garwood and Ewan Macglasham of the popular Eat Me Bistro.

Chef Joel (hailing from Sydney, Australia) has an impressive gastrobackground having worked in a host of acclaimed restaurants, rubbed shoulders with such luminary master chefs as Heston Blumenthal, Albert Roux and Raymond Le Blanc and has been involved with many very swanky events companies in London.

These included two famous names such as Mustard and Rhubarb where he had the opportunity to cook in

the exalted kitchens of Buckingham Palace.

The restaurant serves extremely tasty tapas from across the Mediterranean at seriously friendly prices in an ambiance of a Spanish bodega. The house wine is Spanish and keenly priced at B.120 per glass.

From the cold menu we decided to launch our dinner with the antipasto board (B.240). Everything here, where possible, has been cooked, cured, marinated or baked by chef himself making each item stand out with fresh, punchy flavours.

The salmon gravlax glowed with

shimmering pinkness and literally melted in the mouth the way only salmon can; the house terrine was a perfect example of a wedge of classic French terrine; the chorizo had been impeccably sourced for its authentic taste; the balsamic mushrooms were addictively good especially when enjoyed with the house Forcaccia. All the items on the board can be ordered individually, for example the gravlax is only B.125 with cream cheese and bread while that delicious chorizo comes with potatoes and a salsa verde for B.110.

of the dishes from the hot menu. First up was the spicy meatballs with mint yoghurt. The kick of hot paprika in the zesty tomato sauce shone through while the balls themselves were ideal spheres of minced pork sunk deeply into the sauce. I loved the blue cheese Arancini. Tasty rice balls had been coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried to golden goodness.

The twist here though was that the rice had been flavoured with a tangy

blue cheese to bring a hit of salty savoury to the palate. These golden globes were my stand out dish but Mick favoured our next offering, potatoes and chorizo with salsa verde (B.110). Crisp, sautéed potatoes had been tossed with the aforementioned piquant Spanish salami to produce a plate of extreme tastiness. Two more dishes followed, duck breast with lime and pomegranate, and Chicken Ballotine with crispy onions (B.115).

Both moreish substantial dishes to finish our pageant of dishes.

We would have loved to have tucked into a slice of the Pina Colada cake (B.95) courtesy of The Sweet Spot, Pattaya’s popular patisserie, but we’d enjoyed too many tapas by that stage and had to sadly forgo that treat.

23@Pattaya Hill is a welcome addition to Pattaya’s growing collection of eclectic establishments.

It serves approachable food at very accessible prices and with its neighbourhood vibe, stunning penthouse location, and Chef Joel’s passion to make it succeed - it surely will.

L’Olivier – Jomtien’s Olive Tree Under New Ownership with Ooh, La, La a Plenty!

The new Patrone of L’Olivier is a charming Thai lady, Maneewan (Wan), who has an extensive globetrotting background having lived in Nice and Normandy with her French husband where she honed her skills and her love of all things Francophile, especially its cuisine.

She has now returned to her native Thailand and is transforming L’Olivier into a bistro to live up to its Provencal name. The name means Olive Tree and is the symbol of the Provence region of France where the fruity olive oil characterises the flavour of this Mediterranean cuisine.

The menu is in the foundation stages at present still retaining the Indochine and Thai menus of old, but peu ȧ peu (slowly, slowly) it will be readdressed to reflect Wan’s passion for French food and her hands-on approach to her new restaurant.

Located in the lively Jomtien Complex with a big front terrace for al fresco dining, it also makes the perfect spot to watch the coming and goings in this vibrant part of town. Inside it's cool and serene with a casual, cordial ambiance and

friendly staff.

Word travels fast in this fair city and none more so than good deal dinners. We had received so many recommendations that this restaurant was serving a gourmet 4-course set dinner for only B.390 that we hightailed it down to the complex to find out for ourselves.

There are two menus du jour – one at B.350 and the other at B.495 and both change daily to reflect the seasons and the markets. We elected to sample the B.350.

Both menus include soup of the day and on the evening of our visit it was spinach. What a soup; it was a lovely, leafy bowl of goodness swirled with a touch of cream which illuminated the bright green colour and texture. It was then time to visit the new hors d’oeuvres buffet.

The first item to catch our eye was the Pissaladiere. Originating in Nice in the South of France, this is a classic Provencale dish comprising of caramelised onions, olives, garlic and anchovies. Nestling next to the savoury pie were asparagus spears wrapped in ham, all manner of salads: Caesar, tuna, pasta, broccoli and a wonderful Thai herby

salad tossed in punchy lemon grass vinaigrette. Prawn cocktails were assembled in white spoons, creamy Mimosa eggs begged to be picked up, the salami beckoned and three final pates completed the display, fish, mushroom and a silky smooth chicken liver pate. If we had been eating the B.495 we would have had the benefit of the salad buffet plus we could have chosen from smoked duck breast, smoked salmon or salad Nicoise as further appetizers.

It was now time for our main course. Mick had chosen fusion fried soft shell crab sautéed with onion and bell pepper in a black pepper and garlic sauce (+ B.30), while I opted to try the filet de perche meuniere (+B.30). The other two options that evening were chicken thighs baked in a tomato Provencale sauce with mashed potatoes or pork filet mignon with garlic parsley vinegar. Both our dishes were palate delighting, the fish soft, juicy and yielding and the accompanying vegetables cooked with a light hand.

Soft shell crabs are tricky items to execute well and here they had received all the right treatments and had emerged crisp and delicious.

Options for the B.495 menu would have been fillet of tenderloin with a whisky and Paris mushroom sauce, duck a l’orange served with roasted potatoes or grilled salmon steak with mashed potatoes. House wine is B.105 by the glass or B.165 for the small carafe or B.245 for the large.

The wine list contains some excellent bottles starting from only B.895.

Desserts are lavish with a definite ooh, la, la feel about them: ile flottante, chocolate mousse or an Italian panna cotta with raspberry compote. We took Wan’s advice and plumped for her own invention, gourmet coffee (+B.30). Not just coffee this dessert it’s a quartet of signature confections escorted by a cup of fragrant espresso. A wobble of panna cotta, a square of luscious chocolate brownie, a rectangle of the most delicious cake in the world, chocolate lava cake with its molten, oozing chocolate centre plus a spoonful of yummy strawberry ice cream completes this

heavenly plate of sweet bliss. Five standout desserts are listed on the other set menu which also includes the famous French apple tart and of course that wonderful gourmet coffee plate.

The daily special menus hit all the right notes with such keen pricing to astonish diners. Lively, well located and hitting the right price points, this restaurant will become understandably popular.

Quite honestly, where else in the world could such a quality French feast be enjoyed for approximately 8 euros! We take off our chapeaux to Wan, her brigade and team of happy servers.

Titanic’s killing field After literally hundreds of books, movies and videos, you might have thought there was nothing new to say on the 1912 Titanic disaster. But David Dyer in his new novel The Midnight Watch (available on Amazon as an ebook or print version) has dredged up one of the disaster’s most controversial incidents: did the Leyland liner ss Californian ignore the doomed liner’s distress rockets and could she have saved 1,500 lives? Although the author dresses up his views as a work of fiction, by introducing a made-up journalist who decides to get to the bottom of the matter, this is a firmly antiCalifornian, historical text.

Dyer postulates that second officer Herbert Stone and apprentice James Gibson, on the Californian’s midnight-4 am watch, did indeed see plainly the Titanic’s rockets as well as the distant liner herself. They attempted to report what they were seeing to captain Stanley Lord who was snoozing below and declined to come up to the bridge, instead ordering his subordinates to morse the mystery ship on the horizon to find out what was going on. In the morning, when it became clear that the Titanic was at the bottom of the ocean, he bamboozled Stone and Gibson into telling lies both to the press in New York and later at the official inquiry in London. The novel suggests that second officer Stone was actually frightened by the remote and stern captain Lord, seeing in him the reincarnation of his (Stone’s) father who had beaten him as a child and forced him to watch the drowning of some kittens.

After a sorority moves in next door, which is even more debaucherous than the fraternity before it, Mac and Kelly have to ask for help from their former enemy,Teddy.

Find out why the birds are so angry. When an island populated by happy, flightless birds is visited by mysterious green piggies, it's up to three unlikely outcasts – Red, Chuck and Bomb – to figure out what the pigs are up to.

Is it all true? The British government’s last word in the subject was a report of 1992 into the Californian incident which broadly concluded that the Californian did see the Titanic’s rockets but was too far away to have saved any lives. The two writers of the report, both sea captains, differed on whether the Californian could actually see the Titanic and on whether there was a third mystery ship lying between the two vessels. In other words, there was a partial exoneration of captain Lord. Of course, Dyer (and some earlier writers) will have none of this. Lord was guilty of grave dereliction of duty – he never even roused his radio operator until too late – and he, Stone and Gibson all lied under oath. The 1992 report and this book also pour scorn on the Californian claim that the rockets or flares were company signals of some kind.

Captain Lord in 1912 was never accused of any offence – he was merely called as a witness to Lord Mersey’s official inquiry.

Although the Leyland shipping line dismissed him, he was employed as a captain by another company until he retired in 1929. There the matter rested until the appearance of the movie A Night to Remember in 1958 which gave prominence to the failure of the Californian’s captain and officers to assist the Titanic. Lord, by now in his 80s, was incensed and visited his sea captain’s union, the Mercantile Marine Service Association, to campaign on his behalf. Lord died in 1962 but the controversy continued until today.

Captain Lord’s case essentially was that the Californian never saw the Titanic or its rockets and was 20 or 30 miles from the wreck site. In any case, many Titanic witnesses said they saw the lights of a moving steamer on the horizon whereas the Californian was stationary all night.

Frantic attempts over 100 years have been made to identify the mystery ship, but without success. In the 1960s, a popular candidate was the Samson, a Norwegian whaler, whose captain Ring in 1929 claimed his ship had seen the doomed Titanic but fled the scene as she was carrying a cargo of illegal seal pelts.

But the tale is nonsense. Ring claimed he feared arrest by the American coastguard patrolling the area, but the Titanic sank in mid-ocean. Another candidate was the British liner Mount Temple which was certainly in the broad area of the sinking, but analysis of her navigational position on the night of the tragedy shows she never witnessed anything of significance. At least a dozen other vessels have also been identified, but none conclusively.

As The Midnight Watch claims, the Californian’s captain was certainly amiss in not coming to the bridge to see for himself the rockets when advised by his officers. But David Dyer’s other major claim that the Californian could have saved all, or most of the stricken vessel’s passengers is likely pure fantasy. Yet the Californian incident is not a dead issue yet. A movie is to be made next year based on David Dyer’s novel. Captain Lord must be turning in his grave. No wonder his family gravestone in Wallasey, UK, makes no mention of the fact he was ever a sea captain. No wonder.

You know the old idiom ‘No news is good news.” Well, when it comes to the real estate market ‘No News is Bad News’.

Haven’t you noticed that after years of being inundated with information, photos, graphs and diagrams celebrating robust property development, incredible expansion and unprecedented growth in Pattaya’s real estate sector, there is now a virtual vacuum of information.

How many real estate agencies, magazines, newspapers, TV programs, etc., are no longer with us?

How many real estate ‘hot shot personalities’ have we seen come and go over the years?

After years of extraordinary growth and development, the local real estate sector has come to a screeching halt; it started with the collapse of the Russian ruble and the exodus of Russian nationals—out of Pattaya and back to Russia. Although Russians represented the largest segment of foreign buyers, a more devastating loss was felt when Thailand became Asia’s highest consumer debt nation and Thais opted out of the market. The Pattaya real estate industry lost 50 percent of its buyers.

Many industry professionals here will estimate that Thais comprised as much as 50 percent of the Eastern Seaboard propertymarket, and that Russians represented at least 20 to 30 percent.

As a result, the real estate industry on the Eastern Seaboard began contracting to what it is today.

Yes, there are still a few strong, wellbranded developers, and their developments continue to sell. To everyone’s astonishment, new developments continue to go up, but the more unfortunate result is the number of developments that have been terminated and those that have failed and the number of unfinished buildings that mar the Pattaya skyline.

The result is failed magazines, failed newspapers and failed TV programs leaving the few remaining real estate publications with fewer and fewer pages; they look more like brochures than magazines.

competition for the highest sales commissions and the steepest discount on developers’ prices.

For some time there has been precious little to say about the Pattaya real estate industry. Thus, the following twisted idiom: ‘No News is Bad News’!

Speaking of idioms we all know the expression, ‘I’ve got some good news and some bad news.’ Well in the case of this article we had some bad news and it is now time for some good news...very good news!

All is not at a complete loss. This downward cycle will not last forever, as things have to and always do change.

Sometime soon we will see things pick up once again and another property boom will be on its way bringing with it the latest designs, materials and innovations!

Yes, although news has been very quiet lately on the Eastern Seaboard, there are some positive indicators related to Thailand’s economy.

Coming from one of the most important and strategic sources of business development in Thailand is the recent news from the Board of Investment (BOI) about this year’s foreign investment surge during the first quarter of 2016. BOI recently said it is confident that the foreign investment growth already seen this year will continue through the rest of the year. An impressive 89.9 billion baht was invested in Thailand’s industrial sector in the first quarter compared to only 26 billion baht in the first three months of last year.

Even more impressive is that at this current rate of investment into Thailand’s industrial sector a whopping 45 percent of the 450 billion baht targeted for this year has already been met with nine more months left in the year!

For many years now the largest contributor of these Thai industrial investments has come from Japan (26 percent) as well as China, South Korea and Singapore. Keep a good eye on China as it is moving up the industrial investment ladder quickly here in Thailand.

There are even signs that European investment in Thailand is showing signs of improvement, with Germany leading the pack.

The BOI already has embarked on a major and very aggressive marketing strategy to attract more investment and ensure that Thailand continues to be an attractive area for foreign investment for years to come.

We are even hearing great words of confidence from our government leaders.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha last month expressed great satisfaction with the success of Thailand’s business community in gaining a competitive edge towards sustainable growth. While chairing a recent meeting of the National Committee on Competitive Advantage, the Prime Minister acknowledged the many improvements accomplished so far and said that he was content in all areas, ranging from economics, human resources and public administration to information management and public relations.

Even though in 2015 the IMD placed Thailand at number 30 out of 61 countries in terms of economic competitiveness— down from the previous year’s standing at 29, and the World Economic Forum downgraded the ranking of Thai education quality from 31 to 32, the World Bank recently ranked Thailand 46th on ease of doing business, up from the 49th place previously.

SALE WITH THE RIGHT OF REDEMPTION (KAI FAK) What is Sale with the Right of Redemption?

Sale with the right of redemption (Kai Fak) is a contract of sale wherein the seller who owns a real estate has a legal right to redeem his or her sold property within the agreed period of time. With this method, the ownership of the property is transferred to the buyer at the seller’s expense. The redemption takes place when the entire amount of the redemption price has been reimbursed by the buyer including all related fees incurred in the process.

Ownership will be transferred back to the original owner only when the buyer gets the money back on the date agreed upon in the contract. The period of time to buy back the property is registered on the Title Deed. The property must be returned in the condition in which it is at the time of redemption, provided that if the property has been destroyed or deteriorated through the fault of the buyer he must, therefore, be liable to pay compensation.

Who has the right to exercise the Right of Redemption?

The right of redemption may be exercised only by: 1. The original seller or his/her heirs; or 2. The transferee of the right; or 3. Any person expressly allowed to redeem by a contract The right of redemption may be exercised only against: 1. The original buyer 2. The transferee of the property or of a right to the property provided that, in the case of movable property, he knew at the time of the transfer that such property was subject to a right of redemption.

What happens to the sold property if the seller fails to reclaim the said property within the Kai Fak period?

In the event that the seller fails to comply within the Kai Fak period or when the Kai Fak period expires, the seller loses his/her right to redeem the property from the buyer.

What happens in case the buyer is not present during the expiration of the Kai Fak period?

The seller who intends to redeem may make the deposit of the redemption price to a government depositing office within the period. The ownership of the property shall be vested in the person who redeems from the time of payment or deposit of the price has been made.

Can the buyer sell the property within the Kai Fak period?

The parties may agree that the buyer shall not

dispose of the property sold. If the buyer disposes of it contrary to the agreement, he or she shall be liable to the seller for any damages resulting thereby.

For how long is a Kai Fak exercised?

If the period is not defined, the right of redemption cannot be exercised later than ten years after the time of the sale in case of immovable property and three years after the time of sale in case of movable property.

The period of redemption may be extended which must be evidenced by a contract and registered to the Land Department by a competent official. If a longer period is provided in the contract, it shall be reduced to ten years and three years respectively.

What is the legal Rate of Interest?

If the price of redemption is not fixed, the property may be redeemed by reimbursing the price of the sale and the annual profit must not exceed the rate 15% per year.

What is the difference between a Kai Fak and a Mortgage?

A Mortgage is a debt instrument or a contract, secured by the collateral of specified real estate property that the borrower is obliged to pay back with predetermined payment terms. Mortgages are used to make real estate purchases without paying the entire value of the purchase up front, by borrowing money from a bank or financial institution and registering the mortgage loan at the local government office using house registration documents or title deeds without changing the property ownership.

With Kai Fak, it is not treated as a financial debt and there is a right to redeem the property sold and the ownership is transferred to the buyer. This method has been widely used in Thailand as an alternative to a Mortgage.

About the most expensive way to pay school and university fees is out of income at the time they’re due; that is, for those of us who don’t have them paid by corporate employers.

If there is the chance to plan ahead, there are specially designed savings arrangements that may well fit the bill. Such schemes have a built in ‘drawdown’ facility that allows for fees to be withdrawn at the required times. Even a modest growth rate has the effect of discounting fees, and the longer it goes on, the bigger the cost savings.

The fact that, as expatriates, we can save offshore in a tax-free environment is a big plus.

Educational fees are climbing at a higher rate than inflation, so it’s prudent to build in an escalating estimate of the amounts likely to be required. As a rule of thumb, the approximate increase in fee costs runs out at around 5 or 6 percent and, as a further safeguard, savings contributions can also be increased automatically year on year by specific amounts, or percentages.

University costs may well also have the additional expense of providing accommodation should the campus be some distance from the family home. The total cost, in this part of the world, to privately educate a child from the age of 5 to age 22, including university, is estimated to be approximately 200,000 USD. If you now multiply these figures for two or three children, the need for early planning becomes even more evident.

Another possibility is to take out life insurance for the estimated amount required over the term needed to guarantee the fees are available should the worst happen to the family breadwinner(s); this, of course, gets more expensive as we get older.

The other option is to set aside a lump sum earmarked for the purpose. Funds can be invested and the necessary amounts stripped out as and when required. There are offshore platforms that allow access to all listed stocks and securities available on all major markets, as well as deposit accounts with major banks. This provides for enormous flexibility of investment, and the money can be placed in trust to ensure that your wishes are carried out, should the worst happen. Either way, planning as early as possible is the most effective way of making substantial savings on the cost of your children’s education.

A personal illustration of the various schemes should be obtained to reflect your own particular circumstances, including the specific school’s tariff and the selected, potential university’s tuition fees.

Business News Three Thailand islands score TTM+ 2016 to be Unique, strong recognition in the 2016 Different and Distinctive TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for Islands Three of Thailand popular southern islands scored top spots in the 2016 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice™ Awards for Islands.

Phuket gained the second spot in Asia and 8th in the global ranking.

The awards identify the top 10 island destinations globally and by region.

Two other Thai islands, Samui and Tao, achieved third and fourth places in the Asia rankings.

TripAdvisor said it highlights the world’s top islands based on the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in destinations worldwide gathered over a year, as well as traveller booking interest registered on TripAdvisor.

Barbara Messing, TripAdvisor chief marketing officer, added, “With common traits like breathtaking beaches, exciting activities and popular hotels and restaurants, the Travellers’ Choice Islands are favourites of the TripAdvisor community. While most of these islands have yearround appeal, TripAdvisor booking data shows that bargain hunters can save on their hotels when staying at the top islands during the shoulder season rather than the peak.”

In the citations for each of the winning destinations, TripAdvisor states that Phuket musters 1,086 things to do based on its visitor reviews and feedback.

It recommends Phuket’s Baba Wedding Festival hosted in the island’s old town this June, as an impelling reason to book a Phuket holiday.

TripAdvisor identifies 475 things to do while visiting Samui, the third place island in the Asia rankings. It recommends a booking in May to catch the spectacular Samui Regatta at Chaweng Beach, during May 21-28.

Reviews of Koh Tao, a worldclass dive destination, identify 156 things to do. TripAdvisor recommends a visit in June to capture the ambience of the ecotourism event, Save Koh Tao Festival, June 18-19.

A new destination, record number of first-time buyers and a unique range of exhibitors are among the highlights of Thailand’s leading travel trade event to be held on June 8 to 10.

For the first time, the Thailand Travel Mart 2016 Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion TTM+ 2016, will be held in the northern capital of Chiang Mai. As of March 23, it had attracted 570 buyers from 62 countries, of whom roughly half were first-time participants.

Amongst the sellers, the line-up of 343 exhibiting companies includes unique boutique hotels in the Greater Mekong Subregion, in addition to a range of creative small and medium sized products and services seeking to expand their profile in the international market.

Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT governor, said, “This year’s event promises to be unique, different and distinctive from anything we have done in the past. We have carefully analysed all the feedback we have got over the past few years and done our best to act upon many of the valuable recommendations.

“The enormous interest we have received from the buyers is certainly very encouraging. We believe this year’s TTM+ will go a long way towards facilitating business opportunities and meeting our national development priorities.”

Now in its 15th year, the Thailand Travel Mart 2016 Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion is eagerly awaited in Chiang Mai where provincial authorities and the tourism industry are working hard to deliver a memorable and productive event.

Registration for the event has closed. As of March 23, India has the largest contingent of buyers (120) followed by the United Kingdom (40), China (33), Australia (25), Italy (25) and the USA (21). A group of smaller but high-quality buyers have also been invited from emerging markets such as Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova and Ukraine.

Of the total number of buyers, 57 percent or 325 are first timers and 245 are repeat buyers.

Amongst the exhibitors, 30 percent or 103 organisations are first timers, and 70 percent or 240 organisations are repeat sellers.

The sellers comprise of hotels and resorts (260), tour operators and travel agents (22), entertainment (8), transportation (3), associations (6), NTOs (3), the Greater Mekong Subregion (16), other travel services (23) and 12 Hidden Gems destinations (2).

In January-February 2016, Thailand’s visitor arrivals surged to a record 6.09 million, up by 15.48 percent over the same period of 2015, according to figures published by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

China continues to grow as the top source of visitor arrivals with 1.77 million arrivals in January-February 2016, up by 32.21 percent over the same period in 2015.

Visitors from East Asia and ASEAN totaled 3.87 million (+20.61 percent), the Americas 265,166 (+14.70 percent), South Asia 220,381 (+9.13 percent), the Middle East 79,166 (+16.25 percent), Europe 1.46 million (+6.86 percent) and Africa 22,111 (+8.13 percent). Only one region reported a decline: Oceania -2.77 percent to 137,115.

Integrating the Montessori and EYFS

Drawing on the Birth to Three Matters Framework, the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) puts a new emphasis on children as active learners throughout the foundation stage. This new emphasis has in turn increased the attention given to the environments from which children learn. Dr Maria Montessori was one of the earliest pioneers of educational practices based on these ideas. Today, Montessori communities have a unique contribution to make to the delivery of the EYFS because of the very different way in which they function to support active learning.

At the same time the EYFS poses a difficulty, in the form of the statutory targets, to those seeking to comprehensively support active learning.

Over many years children in Montessori environments have comfortably arrived at the indicators of development described through the targets.

Supporting children to this level of development has come about by planning activities that follow each child’s deepest interests at any particular time.

The emphasis on target-based planning within the EYFS

could lead some practitioners to dictate a learning timetable to the children at the expense of following the deep interests of an active learner.

Montessori Education (UK) has written a document mapping Montessori against the guidelines given in the EYFS. The purpose of this document is to highlight how the EYFS can be delivered very effectively through Montessori environments, highlighting those areas where Montessori practice has a particular contribution to offer. Each of the Themes and Principles is comprehensively addressed, including the six areas of Learning and Development.

A central idea of Montessori education is that children have within them the power they need to develop themselves.

Following from this is the

understanding that it is through the child's interaction with his environment that this selfconstruction takes place. It is the child that needs to be active in his dynamic experience with the world around him. The task we set ourselves as Montessori educators is to provide children with an environment carefully prepared to meet their particular developmental needs and, through careful observation, to connect them with that environment, so that they can build themselves through their own activity.

The parallels between the Montessori approach and some of the main themes of the Early Years Foundation Stage are clear.

The EYFS theme of 'A Unique Child' is based on the principle that 'Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured'. Similarly the EYFS makes the provision of 'Enabling Environments' one of four priorities. The emphasis placed on 'active learning' and 'learning through experience' within the theme of 'Learning and Development' is again very much in line with Montessori practice.

There are many sections of the EYFS that emphasize the importance of the child's own decision making, both in what they do and how they do it. Other parts of the EYFS emphasize that children are innately 'primed' to learn from the human and physical environments around them.

This is a radical departure from

traditional educational practice, which in general follows a curriculum decided by the adult that determines what the children should do and learn.

In the Montessori approach decision-making for the child's day-to-day activities shifts away from the adult, to the child.

Montessori environments take these principles to their natural conclusion. The child enters an environment, which both in its contents and functioning is designed to meet the particular physical, mental and spiritual needs of children

GIS Says Goodbye to its Oldest Students

Garden International School (GIS) said farewell to its oldest students as they prepare for their final IB examinations.

There was a special whole school assembly to say goodbye to the Year 13 students, who are in their final year of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Our IB students entered the main hall to a fanfare and guard of honour from the IB1 students. Random teachers and students then stood up to offer some memories of each IB student, and wish them well for the future.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories The Adventures of Quentin Durward in 1955 was Robert Taylor’s third offering in the trio of movies which also included Ivanhoe and Knights of the Round Table, all made in MGM’s British studios. For more than 30 years Taylor remained one of the studio’s principal leading men, usually playing against glamorous leading ladies. In this case it’s Kay Kendall who was to die prematurely just a few years later.

Billed as a swashbuckler,

there isn’t so much action in Quentin Durward compared with, say, Ivanhoe a couple of years previously. Filmed on location in the British and French countryside, the story is set in fifteenth century France. It’s an era, according to the blurb, when the introduction of gunpowder was overturning the old ideas of chivalry and honour. Quentin Durward (Robert Taylor) is instructed by his aged uncle the Duke of Crawford (played by Ernest

Quentin Durward not too serious Thesiger in one of his final film roles) to go to France and prepare the way for a dynastic marriage between the Duke and the Countess of Marcroy (Kay Kendall).

Taylor is impoverished and doesn’t have any real choice in the matter of obeying his uncle.

The Countess is none too pleased to be forced into marriage with an old Scottish baron. “His left hand may be on the Scottish throne,” she sighs, “but his right is on the graveyard wall”. So she slips away from her socalled protector The Duke of Burgundy (Alec Clunes), who has arranged the match,

to seek shelter in the court of the French king Louis XI (Robert Morley).

But she is forced to flee again upon learning that the crafty Louis is planning to betray her once again. The dashing Durward naturally foils the plot, falls in love with the Countess and marries her on hearing the glad tidings that his uncle in Scotland has passed away at last. The plot is somewhat unbelievable at this point though, to be fair, it does mirror the story line in Sir Walter Scott’s original novel.

Actually it is Robert Morley who steals the picture as the jovial but unscrupulous monarch who has absolutely no loyalties except to himself and to France which, at the time, was in danger of being dismembered or even overrun by the dastardly English who still held a few cities from the long drawn out Hundred Years War. Morley trusts only his barber played by Wilfrid Hyde White with his usual aplomb

and wit. “If a monarch must trust somebody,” comments Louis XI, “let it be the man who daily presses a razor against his throat.”

But Wilfrid is far more than a barber, acting also as a gobetween or messenger for whatever scheme his master currently has in mind.

Director Richard Thorpe, by now an old hand at costume dramas, unusually for him throws in a dash of humour, making fun of the so-called Scottish trait of miserliness personified

by Ernest Thesiger who is actually more interested in his future bride’s income than in her famed good looks.

He also makes the dialogues between Louis and his barber very amusing as they consider what deviance may next serve king and country best. “Oh, do get on with the shaving!” pines Louis at one point.

The action is low key with very duelling or fight scenes and emphasis on the matlock rifle revolution whose fire throughout the movie seems

to miss everybody aimed at.

But there is an impressive final sword fight on the belfy ropes between a double for Taylor and the chief villain which makes a fitting conclusion.

Robert Taylor made eight films with director Richard Thorpe, four prior to Quentin Durward and including The Crowd Roars (1938), Ivanhoe (1952), All The Brothers Were Valiant (1953) and Knights of the Round Table (1953).

By the mid fifties it was becoming clear that Robert Taylor’s swashbuckling days were over as the years clocked on and his health began to deteriorate. Taylor continued to make movies almost until his death from lung cancer in 1969, but Quentin Durward was his last medieval epic or historical costume drama.

Local Sports April Golf Summary

April Blue Sapphire Stableford A&B Blue Tees The full cast of 12 players headed out to the Canyon course which is about 30 minutes from Kanchanaburi town on good roads. The course is set on an old abandoned open cast copper mine surrounded by hills and between man-made emerald blue lakes. This is a peaceful layout in a rural setting and has many holes where water comes into play, especially on the par threes. A good test of golf with close finishes for the top three spots.

Results: 1st - Les Cobban (8) 35 2nd - Lee Butler (19) 33 3rd - Mark Stanley (8) 33 Near Pins: Les Hall, Lee Butler, Mark Stanley, Colin Gregg April Evergreen Hills Stableford All our golfers set out for the hour journey south to this heavily-wooded area near the Myanmar border. A gem of a course which is not too long and favors accuracy over length with both the

16th and 17th holes having island greens which claimed their share of golf balls. Not too much English from the caddies but the great big Thai smiles overcame that problem.

Unfortunately two golfers signed for incorrect scores resulting in Les Cobban losing out on poll position after disqualification.

Results: 1st - Les Hall (23) 35 2nd - Jimmy Carr (18) 34 3rd - Mark Stanley (8) 33 Near Pins: Les Hall, Lee Butler, Mashi Keneta, Les Cobban April Mida Kanchana Stableford All our intrepid golfers headed west to a course originally called Lion Hills golf club about 35 minutes away.

The scenic views with pine forests make this an enjoyable location to play golf but the holes were predominately flat with the fairways in desperate need of a little tender, loving care and slightly undulating greens which were easy to read.

The top three positions were ties so a count out determined the final positions.

Results: 1st - Mark Stanley (8) 34 2nd - Les Cobban (8) 34 3rd - Geoff Parker (14) 34 Near Pins: Ross Schiffke, Mark Stanley, Lee Butler April Dragon Hills Stableford All our players stopped off at this course on the way back home after traveling for one and a half hours. This 18-hole layout is spread out in lush, mountainous jungle, valleys and hills with the back nine the more impressive as you play through parkland settings.

Hole 12 is an island green of about 170 yards which made it challenging.

After a quick shower, everyone headed back to Pattaya after missing out on all the Songkran fun. The result of the best 4 stableford scores out of the 5 games played was very close with Les Cobban winning the Trophy with a score of 141 points edging out Mark Stanley by one, but Mark is ahead by 3 points on the golfer of the month at this stage.

There were only good comments about the accommodation at Good Times Resort in Kanchanaburi and we will definitely be staying there again next year.

Results: 1st - Mark Stanley (8) 40 2nd - Ross Schiffke (18) 36 3rd - Les Cobban (8) 36 Near Pins: Lance Conway Jones, Lee Butler, Tom Mc Dowell, Mark Stanley, Ross Schiffke April Khao Kheow Stableford C&A Yellow Tees A poor turnout after the games as some of the golfers were relaxing at home out of the heat. The course was in its usual good condition with plenty of greenery but the greens were like putting through treacle and we can only assume that the greens keeper is protecting the greens from the heat by letting them grow a little longer. There were also many other golfers on the course which slowed down our three-ball groups but we still finished in good time. Scores were not that good with no players equaling or beating their handicaps.

Happy Birthday Steve Younger Fourteen golfers turned out to have a crack at Parichat golf course; this is the first visit that we as an outlet were going out to play. Numbers are still a bit low as we are recovering from that wasted exercise called Songkran. Price for our game was 1,400 baht covering green fee cart and caddie! 800 baht if you walk!

We gathered on the first tee and took our first look at this course; a couple of things came to mind. Dobbsy telling

me that I would love this course and that it would suit me; well, looking at the course and the course layout (on the score card), panic set in. We teed off about half an hour earlier than booked for, as per this time of year we were the only golfers out there!

We attacked the course from white 1 tee; if I said that there was plenty of water on this course, I was not kidding. Some of the water carries were a bit too long for

this golfer. Other than that I found the course to be in great shape, pin placement on a few of the holes were questionable.

The weather was on the warm side with little or no breeze; ironically the only time the wind sprung up was on the tee box and attempting to hit into it. But that’s golf for you!

Steve Younger came to play on his birthday and play he did breaking his 61st year he did not show any signs of slowing down. Steve took the honors today 4 shots ahead of Alex Field with 37 points.

Alex Field took pleasure taking D-for “The Charity dog” around the throng for some spare change to boost his collections for charity to the needy of Pattaya.

Keep your cat!

by Dr. R.J. Peters Recent reports in publications and online warn pregnant women about the dangers of contracting toxoplasmosis from their cats, thus potentially harming the fetus. But pregnant cat owners can rest easy; the organism is rare (particularly in Thailand), the threat is minimal, and infection can be prevented. Don't let anyone scare you into throwing your cat away.

Here are the facts: Dreaded toxoplasmosis disease may be associated with the litter box, but infection is less common than some shockmongers would have you believe.

It actually takes more to get the parasite than simply cleaning up cat waste.

To become infected, the cat must have the disease. That, in itself, is rare. Furthermore, the cat's waste must be several days old, you must never have had a cat before, you must actually touch the waste, you must ingest the germ orally, and you must be in your second or third trimester of pregnancy before your fetus is at risk. If all those criteria are not met, chances of infection are little

The primary path of infection is by ingesting the Toxoplasma gondii organism. How does one eat this by simply scooping a cat's litter box? Answer: carelessness.

Just don't put your hands to your mouth, or better yet, don't touch the cat's waste with your bare hands to begin with.

The disease is much more likely to be contracted through other means, such as eating inadequately cooked meat or contaminated garden produce. All fruits and vegetables must be thoroughly washed inasmuch as the organism can be present in soil. That is a common hazard for children who play in the mud or sand or adults working outdoors in gardens or on construction sites.

All of which has nothing to do with cats, unless you happen to find some stray cat feces on

the ground and touch it. Also, pregnant women who garden should wear gloves and wash well after working in the yard.

If you are extremely paranoid, you can allay your fears by having someone else clean the litter box.

Or just take precautions: wear gloves; scoop the box daily and dispose of the waste immediately; do not touch your lips until you have washed your hands; wash fresh produce, and cook your food well whether you have a cat or not.

Since this is a temporary and minimal risk with cats, you can relax and keep your pet.

Dog Diagnosis Have you heard the one about diagnosing your dog for illness by feeling the tip of his nose for wetness or heat? Don’t believe it.

The temperature of a dog's nose changes easily and is not a good indication of the animal’s well being. Your dog’s nose can be hot and dry after lying in the sun or cool and wet from lapping up water from his water bowl.

Better signs of illness are lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, coughing, or a body temperature above 39˚ (102.5˚F) on a rectal thermometer. The wet snout? It comes from ducts that carry tears toward the nose.

Tansy is our meet-and-greet cat for he is always the first at the gate when people come to visit. He has to have his eyes cleaned every day after surgery that he received when he was just a tiny kitten. As you can see his favorite hobby is eating and cooling his cockles.

Cats can be addicted to tuna, whether it's packed for cats or for humans. Some tuna now and then probably won't hurt. But a steady diet of tuna prepared for humans can lead to malnutrition because it won't have all the nutrients a cat needs. And too much tuna can cause mercury poisoning.

Warning: Remember the saying, "Honest as a cat when the meat's out of reach." An open can of tuna next to the sink may be seen by your cat as a dinner invitation.
