THAI WIDOWS LOSE PENSIONS

T

he latest round of UK financial cuts include the loss of all bereavement and pension rights for Thai widows of British nationals who have died after April 5, 2016. Until last month, foreign widows - who number hundreds of thousands worldwide - could claim an ongoing state pension loosely based on their deceased husband’s National Insurance contributions or a one-off lump sum of up to 2,000 pounds payable in certain circumstances.

Under the revised rules, a widow will be able to claim the British state pension only if she has her own record of National Insurance contributions of paid employment in the UK. In other words, she can no longer rely on her late husband’s work record but must have her own National Insurance record with payments of not less than seven years to produce even a part pension. The full pension in UK is currently around 145 pounds per week. Other bereavement benefits have also disappeared for foreign wives without a British employment record.

Malcolm Mclean, a pensions consultant, explained, “The introduction of the new single-tier state pension with effect from April 6, 2016 have brought about a change in the former arrangements which allowed a person in a marriage or

civil partnership to claim the state pension based on the employment record of their spouse.” He added that, since last month, only contributions made into the new system by the individual herself (or himself ) can count towards building up an entitlement.

The government’s attack on foreigners receiving a British state pension whilst living abroad could even affect people who have lived in Britain for many years.

The changes that will stop pensioners in Bangkok or Belize from getting a weekly cheque from Whitehall will have exactly the same effect on their counterparts living in Birmingham or Blackpool: widows or widowers can no longer rely on their former’s spouse’s National Insurance contributions.

Strictly speaking, this is not a nationality issue.

As regards Thai widows of British husbands, there are believed to be about 2,000 living in Thailand. Those already in receipt of UK state benefits or those whose husband died before the cut-off date last month still fall under the old regulations. But pension consultants say that Thai women now contemplating marriage to a British national should bear in mind that they can inherit none of their husband’s state pension rights.

N E P also have a company pension which is not affected by the changes in the state system. The situation varies from company to company.

Some firms pay surviving wives up to 50 percent of the late husband’s benefits whilst others require an advance notification of who the beneficiary will be after death. There is usually a long list of documents the surviving wife must supply, including passports, birth certificates, proof of National Insurance contributions, company pension number, etc. It is generally a good idea for husbands and wives to contact the company in advance for a comprehensive list of the paperwork which will be required.

Pensions consultants say that the government became determined to crack down on state pensions paid to foreign wives after realizing that the female part-

ner in a marriage had never even set foot in UK and yet was drawing thousands of pounds a year in benefits.

The move is also being seen as a drift towards penalizing expats in financial terms across the board. For example, it is increasingly difficult for them to have access to the National Health Service even if they paid contributions for all of their working lives. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is still examining a proposal to cancel the personal tax allowance of all British expats, although many commentators believe that particular issue is probably too complex to permit a single sword stroke.

But the lesson for Thai wives remains the same. In strictly financial terms, it would have been better if your British husband had died before the beginning of the 2016 tax year. May he rest in peace!

News Ordination cash stolen

The mother of a monk due to be ordained reported to police that 50,000 baht had been stolen whilst the family slept in the temple at Wat Boonkanchanaram. Bang-orn Boonlap, 55, said that she had arrived at the temple with her husband and sister for the ceremony and had fallen asleep after attending a dinner party in a nearby school. In the middle of the night, she awoke after hearing a noise and saw a male running away with the cash.

Police said they were investigating the incident but added there was no CCTV footage of the crime.

Taxi driver assaulted by Indian

A Pattaya baht-bus driver was injured after his passengers refused to pay and thumped him. Somchai told police that he picked up a group of six Indians in South Pattaya who then told him to pull over at the Dolphin roundabout. The group then began to complain that the driver had taken a

Jewelry snatchers in town Police rushed in force to the beach area in North Pattaya after hearing that a man was covered in blood and needing medical attention. The injured man, Songkran Moonsarn, 48 and a security guard, is believed to have had an intimate relationship with a woman who was very disappointed by the small amount of cash she received as a reward. She had summoned several male friends who bound the victim with his own handcuffs and beat him savagely.

After two more jewelry thefts, Pattaya Police are again warning tourists not to wear expensive jewelry in public. A Korean businessman and his girlfriend looking around for a restaurant on Soi Potisan were accosted by a motorbike rider who snatched a gold necklace and fled. In the second incident, a restaurant owner from China and his tour guide were walking in North Pattaya and were robbed of a gold item worth 250,000 baht. Investigators believe that both thefts were the work of the same thief.

Man hit and run by truck

Brit jumps from condo UK-born Lee Bullock, 39, was declared dead after leaping from the 26th floor of a condominium in central Pattaya.

The precise circumstances are still unclear but a security guard saw him holding a bottle of beer as he took a lift to the flat. It is possible that the victim opened the glass door of the room and did not realize that it was easy to fall from the balcony.

A truck collided with a motorbike in Nongplalai fatally injuring the motorbike driver. Police and Sawangboriboon Foundation Pattaya and Banglamung Hospital personnel rushed to the scene where they attempted to revive 27-yer-old Seksan Rakkhwamsuk. The Chonburi man later died. Witnesses said that Seksan’s motorcycle crashed into and slid under the truck along the u-turn tunnel. The truck driver fled on foot and is being sought by police.

Following a serious earthquake in southern Japan, which led to 40 deaths and 40,000 people being evacuated, the Father Ray Foundation in Pattaya joined other sponsors to raise money for the victims. The projects to encourage giving include donation boxes, selling clothes, musical shows and funds directly from local businesses.

Local councilor Ittiwat Wattanasathorn announced that the 9th Pattaya futsal competition would be held from May 19 to 29 at Pattaya School Number Eleven. Twelve teams would enter the contest and Ittiwat said that Pattaya was now an important centre for international sports competitions.

Traditional Thai house Kuwaitis men stabbed, one fatally destroyed in fire

A raging fire completely destroyed the 10-year-old Baan Phaya Maai Thai traditional house on Soi Mabsong-Nongyai 10.

Police responded along with the Nongprue Municipality Disaster Relief Huay Yai, 10 water trucks and the Sawangboriboon Foundation Pattaya. The 600- square-meter wood house, a 100-million baht tourist attraction, caught fire due to an electrical short circuit. Firefighters battled the flames for an hour.

Two Kuwaitis stabbed in the Titanic Beer Bar on Soi Marin South Pattaya were taken to Pattaya Memorial Hospital, where one of the victims later died. On arrival at the scene of the crime, police found two suspects who had been detained by a witness to the assault. The assailants were identified as fellow Kuwaitis Adel Owaed and Mohammad Shuwaired, both of whom were unwilling to discuss the incident. They were arrested and taken to the police station.

Thai man shots himself

A Thai man who was badly injured when he shot himself was rushed to Pattaya Hospital by relatives. Witnesses said 24-year-old Jatuporn Jomsanga, visiting here from Ayutthaya with relatives, shot himself near his right eyebrow. He was found on the floor of the Jomtien resort where he was staying with his girlfriend. The girlfriend said Jatuporn had had an argument with his parents, went out, and returned with his 32 caliber gun.

Air Asia collaborated and Pattaya City Hall launched a green project to collect trash at the diving site in Koh Sark as part of an ongoing campaign to help improve environmental health. Other recent projects

have included cleaning the Kanching Rainforest and a beach adjacent to Rayong. Mayor Itthiphol Kunplume congratulated Air Asia on its various initiatives which, he said, benefited the local economy and the country’s image.

Ban Noen Thang Rotfai and its partner Hilton Pattaya took first prize in the Eco Community Challenge.

The community-based initiative was launched by eight Hilton Worldwide hotels in Thailand and WWFThailand, with assistance from the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion.

Second prize went to the Suvarnabhumi Mosque Community, and third to Khlongtoey Nai 1 Community.

Other communities participating included Ban Saiyuan— which got honorable mention, Soi Ruam Rudee, Fah Si Khram, and Banpangka.

The project seeks to provide communities with information on waste management and segregation using the 3R principles: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Activities included selling recyclable items, recycling

for child charities, fertilizer production from degradable waste, use of bio-extract in farming, and elimination of plastic bags.

Since its launch in late 2014, the initiative had reduced 16 tons of solid waste, saving an equivalent of 6,380 liters of fuel consumption.

A visit to the winning community, Ban Noen Thang Rotfai, demonstrated waste segregation for selling of recyclable items, bio-fertilizer production from degradable waste, and its own low-cost hydroponics undertaking.

Pattaya City also supports the community by providing waste bins and industrializing fertilizer production.

Residents may participate in such environmental efforts by learning proper procedures for segregating waste.

News TAT and Thai Air Asia launch Paint the Sky with Amazing Thailand design contest The Tourism Authority o f T h a i l a n d ( TAT ) i s partnering with Thai Air Asia in launching the “Paint the Sky with Amazing Thailand” design contest, following the success of last year’s cobranding partnership in which the airline wrapped its newest Airbus A320 aircraft with the logo of the 2015 Discover Thainess campaign and decorated its interior with images of the “12 Hidden Gems” destinations.

Man on motorbike killed A 25-year-old motorbike driver, Kritakarn La-ongdee, was killed when he attempted to cut off a baht bus on Sukhumvit Road. The Surin man’s motorbike was found about 20 meters from the scene of the collision, and the white baht bus was abandoned some 50-meters away. Police identified the taxi driver as 50-year-old Chaleuy Famkhlongkhom. The baht bus was confiscated and an arrest warrant issued.

Thrilling matches at the Fitz Club 7thTennis Tournament

Fitz Club –Racquets, Health & Fitness, the luxury sports centre in the Eastern Seaboard run by the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, once again held an exciting tennis tournament for the 7th year in a row, gathering over 30 players.

The Thai government is again cracking the whip and claiming to want to “do something” about cheap, prepaid tour groups coming to Thailand because of the many problems associated with zero sum vacations. Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, the Thai government spokesman, said recently that the Cabinet had received many complaints about abuses and was taking a serious approach to addressing them. “We will advise of reasonable tour package prices from countries such as China and South Korea so that their governments can check. If the tour package fees are lower than the identified prices, then the travel should be banned.”

So what exactly is the problem? The tour service firms that operate zero-dollar packages subsequently pressurize their customers into buying expensive products and services at locations which know exactly what is going on. Such companies have about 300 partners in Thailand and most of them are actually proxy setups designed to channel profits back to the originating country.

About 350 billion baht changes hands annually amongst operators involved in the unreasonably cheap prepaid tour services which have also spawned illegal tour guides, monopolized vehicle rental services and other abuses.

Most of the zero sum tour groups now originate from China and first-time visitors are often wooed by the free airfare and low-cost accommodation. But once the often-gullible tourists set foot in the Kingdom, the scams begin. They are herded into expensive jewelry shops, expensive restaurants and entertainment venues chosen by the tour organizers. Often unable to speak Thai, the members find they are virtual prisoners and sometimes robbed blind. The profits to be made are substantial. On some estimates, 90 percent of Chinese tourists to Thailand come on these “discounted” holidays and the rewards to the organizers may be as high as US$800 million or more.

The numbers of Chinese tourists to Thailand has risen dramatically from about half a million in 2004 to four million a year at the present time. Surveys in Chinese cities suggest there is no shortage of volunteers: up to 50 percent of urban Chinese say they want to see Thailand. In response, the Thai authorities have tried a number of approaches to reduce the abuse problems. Centres have been opened with Mandarin-speaking staff and translators have been brought into police stations to help sort out issues such as Jet Ski scams and street crimes. There have been several memoranda of understanding in which tourist officials from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore have met with Chinese officials with promises to punish operators who conduct zero sum tours or other illegal activities. However, discernible progress has been minimal to say the least.

Representatives of the 4,000 Thai guides across the country say that measures so far have failed because of weak enforcement.

“The government has been trying to end this issue for a long time with different strategies, but the same old problems keep coming along owing to the government’s poor implementation,” said Juropol Ruangket of the Association of Professional Guides. A subsidiary problem has been that not enough Thai guides speak Mandarin which has resulted in the illegal employment of native speakers from the Chinese mainland. These workers seldom have the necessary work permits but there is often a conspiracy of silence.

Pattaya in recent years has been practically awash with zero sum vacationers from China. Many complaints have indeed surfaced such as tourists complaining about high prices when shopping for souvenirs, objecting to being herded into sex shows whether they wanted to go or not (sometimes including babes in arms) and getting involved in arguments at store checkouts. Several Chinese nationals have lost their lives in fires and maritime accidents, sometimes caused because they could not understand warning notices in the Thai language about dangerous swimming or overcrowded boats.

On at least two occasions, the Chinese embassy in Bangkok has complained about the lack of local assistance given to Chinese nationals with serious problems.

Now it seems that the current Prime Minister General Prayut, has got involved, according to Major General Sansern. He said, “Information has been gathered about the zero dollar firms and, initially, the number of tourist arrivals may drop, but the focus now is on quality and not quantity,” cautiously adding, “If the problem is not solved by this government, it will be difficult to do so later because most of the big Thai operators benefitting from the zero sum game are close to political groups.” That was indeed a very fair and frank assessment. What can be achieved within the next year or so, before the long-promised general election, remains to be seen.

Top of the Gulf Regatta 2016 Merit-making for hotelier’s birthday

Popular marine lifestyle event of Asia – Top of the Gulf Regatta – was held for the 12th consecutive year from April 30 to May 4, 2016 at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Pattaya, with 271 boats and more than 700 sailors from 30 countries.

The 2016 Top of the Gulf Regatta presented by Ocean Marina will go down in the history books as one of the best yet and most definitely the biggest. A fleet of 271 boats ranging from Optimists to dinghies, windsurfs, keelboats and multihulls is the largest gathering of watercraft anywhere outside an Olympics in Asia, in recent times. And the quality was there too. From the largest TP52s to the Rio-bound Laser sailors and windsurfers, there was quality and sailing talent in abundance throughout the fleet.

The icing on the cake was the first-ever three-peat in the Platu Coronation Cup by Scott Duncanson – three victories in a row, bringing his total tally to six over the Cup's history. Quite a feat in anyone's eyes.

The keelboat and multihulls sailors, race management, sponsors, media and VIPs came together to celebrate a successful Top of the Gulf Regatta at the closing party and gala dinner hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

Hard Rock Hotel Dance 2016 South Africa Freedom Day On the 27th of April each, year South Africa celebrates the day in 1994 when the first democratic election was held. The election marked the liberation of the country from a long period of colonization and white minority rule.

The event was celebrated in fine style at the Conrad Hilton in Bangkok by many visiting and local dignitaries, celebrities, well wishers and of course the South African Ambassador to Thailand Robina Patricia Marks.

Let the Good Times Roll in their Rocking Good Eateries Just in case you didn’t already know: the first Hard Rock Café opened its doors to the public on June 14, 1971 on Hyde Park Corner in London, England. It’s famous décor developed over the years reputedly starting with one of Eric Clapton’s guitar collection until today when it is considered the largest and most valuable rock ‘n roll memorabilia collection on the planet. The operation is now huge with hundreds of cafes and hotels spanning the globe including the Thai locations of Bangkok and Phuket and also here in Pattaya.

Mick and I found ourselves in this nostalgic hall of fame recently and were blown away by the assembly of such eclecticism from the early days of rock and roll until today.

Just stroll through the hotel foyer and gaze upon the collection of legendary guitars, gold albums and spectacular stage clothes worn by famous artistes to appreciate the Hard Rock ethos. The Café is a big friendly place staffed by young, zany servers who contribute to the air of fun and celebration.

Once seated we looked around at the amazing collection of records and music paraphernalia that adorn the walls, including Elton John’s famous platform boots. American fare is the order of the day offering everything

from smokehouse items through burgers, steaks, fajitas and sandwiches to scrumptious salads and sundaes.

Don’t eat for a couple of weeks before coming to this café! The portions are Fred Flintstone sized. We were served the Jumbo Combo (B.599) to kick off the proceedings. The platter was stacked with onion rings, potato skins, tupelo chicken tenders, hickory smoked chicken wings and Sante Fe spring rolls accompanied by sour cream, barbeque and blue cheese sauces. A veritable feast of flavours and enough to feed a family of very hungry people.

Burgers are legendary on this menu and are served basted with spicy chipotle pepper puree, hickory barbequed bacon and cheese, or patriotic red, white and blue style laced and grilled with spicy buffalo sauce and Cajun seasoning. They weigh in at 6 oz (B.479), or 8 oz at B.649. This was our choice and we enjoyed every beefy bite. Steak is always a popular option and here we spotted the New York strip (B.599) or for fish lovers, do not fret, an 8

oz. tranche of grilled Atlantic salmon would surely fit the bill. Desserts are wicked, indulgent, extravagant and delicious featuring their famous hot fudge brownie sundaes and the luxury Haagen Dazs ice cream.

The Soul Lounge has an altogether different vibe. Dark leather chesterfield-style sofas are strategically placed around low coffee tables and easy chairs all set upon a wall-to-wall luxury carpet with the light from crystal chandeliers further enhancing this elegant ambiance. This is the zone to chill out, watch the latest games on the flat screens or at weekends unwind to the cool sounds from the talented jazz duo. Signature cocktails and mixes are essential imbibing with their house Spicy Soul 2.1 (Absolut Citron, Chambord, pomelo juice, sweet basil and lime) a must have. The menu includes inspired pasta and imaginative starters with the pizzas “craft your own” option providing the opportunity to devise your own bespoke pie (B.495 net).

The Starz Diner offers sensational indoor/outdoor seating and there is always an interesting vibe here as this is the hotel’s all day outlet (located on the ground floor) and it is here that their rock ‘n’ roll a la carte menu is served around the clock.

Come here to experience the B. 930 all-you-can-eat buffet (Sun-Fri) or with free flow drinks at B.1,272) and to discover for yourselves why it has so many devotees. The buffet sets off with a superb selection of fresh, vibrant salad leaves, dressings and cold appetiser dishes nestling alongside freshly rolled sushi and glistening sashimi which segues into Asian and Western soups, pan fried sole, crispy calamari, a bubbling seafood gratinee bake, chicken green curry and much, much more.

Amari Pattaya Hosts a French Wine Experience

It was clinking, toasting, sipping, slurping and supping at Amari Pattaya recently when over 50 oenophiles gathered to meet and mingle with like minded souls who enjoy a glass of good wine complemented by the creative cuisine of Executive Chef Shaun Venter and his trusty brigade. These special wine tasting events are held on the last Friday of the month and feature a specific internationally recognised winery.

The venue is the leafy Garden Lounge where comfy seating is provided, an excellent duo entertains and the tables are laden with specially prepared canapés, finger food and dishes to complement the chosen labels.

French wines had been chosen for this event to showcase the wines from the legendary Borie Manoux.

With more than ten Bordeaux

chateaux under their umbrella the wine chosen for our “French Experience” were from Chateau du Pin and Chateau La Jouissiere.

The first pour of the evening was a sparkling Veuve Chantal Brut. Fresh, light and fruity it accompanied the cold items such as the grilled asparagus with truffle oil and Hollandaise and the smoked salmon tartare with cucumber and sour cream perfectly. We followed this with a glass of Chateau du Pin Blanc, a Bordeaux blend of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle resulting in a pale golden glass with grassy aromas and a slight touch of citrus. With this we particularly enjoyed the mushroom and Brie vol au vent, and the caramelised onion quiche and the deconstructed Salad Nicoise. The Beef Bourguignon with crispy egg noodles and the Coq au Vin on this station we were saving

to enjoy with a glass of the Chateau du Pin Bordeau. A big full tasting red from the Medoc region, it made ideal friends with the richness of both the wine intense dishes and of course the selection of imported cheeses and fresh baked breads.

Yet to be tasted was the Aussie beef meatloaf with French toast and cherry tomato sauce which Mick finished with another glass of that tasty red Bordeau. The assorted pastries, mixed macaroons and croqiembouche (caramel choux pastry balls) brought down the curtain on another extremely successful wine tasting. Please check out their web site for the next wine centric event at the end of May. Before we go we’d like to mention the newly devised menu at Mantra. Chef Shaun has devised exquisite dozen or so pages of

his new pan-gastro menu which is quite extraordinary. Let me run through just some of the many highlights. The Chinese menu produces remarkable duck and pork dishes from the wood-fired oven, such as Hong Kong BBQ duck roll with Hoisin sauce and from the wok comes its celebrated beef tenderloin slices with onion rings and Cantonese sauce. For Japanese lovers the whole gamut is represented from sushi through tempura to miso glazed sea bass.

The Thai Contemporary section offers traditional cuisine tempered with a touch of fusion. For example, Spanish mussels, shrimps and squid with U.S. sea scallops and seaweed noodles or Australian beef massaman with pumpkin and peanuts. Italian favourites are well represented with a quartet of various pastas, porcini mushroom risotto with pan seared foie gras, black truffle and rocket or the ritzy pizzas with the frutti de mare featuring U.S. sea scallops, prawns, Spanish mussels and Boston lobster. From the Mediterranean kitchen fresh shucked Fin de Claire oysters are served with lemon and condiments or baked Thermidore fashion with Hollandaise, English mustard and roasted red peppers.

consisting of 100% pure Australian Wagyu beef with cheese, onions, semi-dried tomato, iceberg lettuce, fried egg, smoked bacon, pickles and steakhouse fries. Which brings us to the sub-continent and Indian cuisine. Here the tandoor oven yields tandoori lamb rack and king prawns while the curries and dhals offer a myriad of gourmet dishes: Goan prawn curry with tamarind, coconut milk and curry leaves or New Zealand lamb leg slow cooked with pickled vegetables in tomato gravy, the list goes on.

Desserts are decadent and delicious. The choices are huge and the designated zone chefs experienced and proficient. The Sunday brunch is a wonderful gourmet affair (B.1,490+). The gastronomic choices and attention to detail totally deserves its celebrated reputation. Weight loss dos and don’ts If you’re starting a new diet and are committed to sticking to it, don’t eliminate all your favorite foods, don’t starve yourself, and don’t limit your diet to tasteless, cardboard-like selections. In essence, do not make drastic changes in your diet that are unsustainable and will set you up for failure.

Here are some science-backed tips that can help you cut calories and make smarter food choices.

First of all, you can clean your plate and still lose weight.

A 2014 study at Cornell University found that the average adult eats 92 percent of whatever is put on their plate. If you’re like the vast majority of adults, if you serve it, you’ll eat it. Simple solution: Measure out proper portion sizes and don’t go back for seconds. That way you won’t have to worry if you’ve cleaned your plate. To keep portion sizes under control, eat off a smaller plate, such as a dessert or salad plate. Use a regular dinner spoon instead of a larger tablespoon when serving yourself.

Second, be smarter about fruit.

Many fruits are high in natural sugars and carbohydrates, but that doesn’t mean you need to banish them from your diet. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, increasing the amount of fruit you eat doesn’t automatically lead to weight gain. Fruits are also packed with fiber, vitamins and other nutrients your body needs. Fruits with high water content are best, and you can eat more of them. For 100 calories

you could have one medium-size banana or a mediumsize apple. Or you could enjoy 1½ cups of grapes, 2 cups of strawberries or 2 cups of watermelon and still hit the 100-calorie mark.

Third, ditch white foods, including sugar.

Whether your staple food of choice is rice, bread, pasta or potatoes-if it’s white it ain’t right.

Opt for brown rice, dark, whole grain bread and pasta, and yams or sweet potatoes. And eliminate white sugar altogether.

The white varieties of such foods lack sufficient fiber, minerals and other healthful nutrients. And here’s another reason to say no to white bread: A study of 9,200 adults found that those who ate only two slices of white bread per day were 40 percent more likely to have weight problems. Try ditching the white stuff altogether for just 10 days, and then see if you really miss it. You might even lose some weight!

Finally, give it a whipping.

Foods that are whipped or puffed up with air can make you feel satisfied without overdoing the calories. Popcorn, for example, with no melted butter or margarine, is light and airy so you end up eating about a third fewer calories than you would with more calorie-dense snacks, like potato chips.

Whip air into eggs for fluffier omelets. For maximum volume, mix them in a blender.

Drinking water after eating reduces the acid in your mouth by 61 percent. A glass of water before a meal helps digestion and curbs appetite.

The album will be released on May 20, 2016 through Clapton's own independent Bushbranch Records/ Surfdog Records label. The album features a combination of new material written by Clapton as well as cover versions of classic songs, contemporary tunes and influences the British recording artist interpreted in his own style.

For the album, Clapton reunited with record producer Glyn Johns and had the album's artwork painted by Sir Peter Blake who also previously worked with Clapton. Author Brandon believes that the publication of Gibbon’s work set the notional scene in the 19th and 20th centuries for the many challenges to British rule overseas which inevitably led to collapse.

Brandon’s book emphasizes that the British empire, even at its height, was always a ramshackle affair which was run from the Colonial Office with its rickety chairs and gin-swilling officials who often let its governors overseas do as they please. Running an empire meant a lot of bloodshed. Hundreds of British women and children during the Indian mutiny of 1857 were forced to lap blood from the slaughterhouse floor at Cawnpore before being strangled to death by slow hanging. In the Zulu war of 1879 British soldiers were literally shredded by enemy swords, whilst the British in turn founded concentration camps in the Boer war which led to 160,000 white civilians being incarcerated in atrocious conditions.

During the first world war, hundreds of thousands of Canadians, Indians and Australians lived in trenches which rapidly turned into cemeteries.

Brendan shows that the chaos of war made it virtually impossible to keep the British empire together. Even when British politicians offered self-government as a way of preventing utter collapse, the will for complete independence never faltered. In

It’s not all serious stuff. Brandon delights us with thumb-nail sketches of Britain’s oddball imperialists. The notorious Richard Burton liked to boast he had indulged in every crime and vice under the sun, whilst general Orde Wingate used to give interviews whilst combing his naked body hair with a toothbrush. Jomo Kenyatta drank Nubian gin to excess and had so many sexual adventures that he was suspended from church membership. Even Mahatma Gandhi provides a few tidbits: a compound of oriental mystic and crank interspersed with humility asnd the ability to be an advocate.

“I wonder if the Romans ever went back to visit Britain?” asked Mr Nehru when he received a visit from prime minister Macmillan in India in 1958. At all events, the Romans like the British revisited their empire through the medium of history-writing. Piers Brandon has produced a remarkable testament to how fascinating such excursions can be. Given the ramshackle nature of the British empire, the real wonder is just how Britain managed to acquire an empire in the first place. Perhaps there was a lot of good luck and the fact that British sailors tended to discover the ends of the earth before anyone else could arrive there.

It has been said that Britain lost an empire and has not managed to find another role, a phenomenon known as postcolonial blues. Young men can no longer join the army to see the world and imperialists are out of favour in an age of equal rights for all. When you wander round south Pattaya and see all those British flags hanging outside certain restaurants and bars, bear in mind that their owners are post-colonial pioneers. The British can no longer conquer countries, but there’s nothing to stop them opening a business and hoisting the flag out of the second-storey premises.

National Association of Realtors® at the White House!

I am writing this from Washington, D.C., where, by special invitation, I’m a delegate member of the world’s largest professional organization—the 1.1 million-member National Association of Realtors® (NAR).

The NAR is holding its annual MidYear Legislative Conference May 9 to 14, attended by several thousand of its American and international bilateral partners.

Founded in 1908, the NAR has been supporting the business of real estate by strengthening the economic and legal conditions necessary to protect and promote property ownership throughout the United States; now the trade association is reaching out to support the growing interest in property ownership throughout the world.

That is NAR’s primary goal, and that is what has made the organization an important player in American as well as international government regulatory bodies. Even more so with globalization and expanding property markets.

This year’s Legislative Conference, promoted as the Realtors Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo, is where NAR members take an active role to advance the real estate industry, public policy and the association itself. Realtors come to Washington, DC, for special-issues forums, committee meetings, legislative activities and the industry trade show.

(Regional Coordinators, President’s Liaisons, Ambassador Associations) at Washington, D.C.’s Omni Shoreham, Hampton RoomEast Conference Center It was at this presentation that many of us were introduced to the process of influence that the National Association of Realtors Party and Organization has over real estate legal and regulatory issues facing America today.

Being the world’s largest trade organization and being involved with the real estate industry at such a high level politically, the NAR has staff that work specifically and daily at the White House and in many government legislative agencies in Washington, making sure that the needs of home purchasers and home owners are communicated and addressed directly to relevant political figures.

I and other international members of the trade group were invited to participate in this event so that we can share what we learned with industry professionals in our home countries. We all are now better prepared to help exercise similar procedures toward change and improvement in our respective nations as it relates to real estate laws and to advance our respective real estate industries and promote more secure home ownership for our clients.

I must admit that one of the issues here in Thailand that kept racing through my mind throughout the entire NAR Global Alliances Advisory Board’s Lobbying 101 Presentation was how much I would like to finally see something clear, concrete and fair done for the thousands upon thousands of foreigners all over Thailand that have been buying and selling land and house properties for decades.

Yes, an end to the political terrorism against Thai nominee companies that foreign land and house property owners are subjected to every couple of years when some zealous Thai political figure grabs some cheap shot publicity attacking foreigners who live in land and house properties set up and documented at the Thai Government Commerce Departments all over the country.

These land and house purchases by foreigners are facilitated at the various Thai government land offices by Thai government licensed lawyers and the accounting and taxation for these land and house properties are facilitated by Thai government licensed accountants.

It is a huge cottage industry run and operated by Thai professionals and there is absolutely no good reason that those foreign owners should be subjected to the fear produced by these frivolous attacks that have never in my 25 years gone anywhere past some chest pounding and an article or two.

This is something that the NAR experience here in Washington, D.C., has greatly inspired me and motivated me to see just what we might be able to do to correct this travesty and farce in the Thai legal system.

It’s time to bring the nominee company land and house ownership issue out into the open and give it proper credibility and not continue threatening foreigners every couple of years.

It is time to start lobbying the Thai government and seek their understanding and support with clear and proper regulations so that foreigners can live peacefully without unwarranted fear.

I think the time has come when everyone living in Thailand—Thais and foreigners alike—can say ‘Home Sweet Home’! having written regularly for leading newspapers and magazines (Bangkok Post, Thailand Property Report, Tropical Homes Magazine, Real Estate Magazine Thailand, Big Chilli Magazine, Tattler Magazine, Homes and Condos Magazine, etc.).

Mazda Motor Corporation announced that production of the Mazda MX-5 (Mazda Roadster in Japan) reached one million units on April 22. The milestone figure was achieved over 27 years, with massproduction of the MX-5 starting at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima in April 1989.

Trademark Registration in Thailand What is a trademark?

A trademark is a recognizable sign, design or expression which distinguishes products or services of a particular source from those of others. The trademark owner can be an individual, business organization, or any legal entity.

What types of trademarks are recognized in Thailand?

Trademarks, collective marks, certification marks, and service marks may be registered in Thailand.

Service Mark is a special type of trademark used in connection with services instead of products.

Businesses use service marks to identify their services and distinguish them from others’ services.

Certification Mark is used by the owner in connection with goods or services of another person to certify the origin, composition, method of production, quality or other characteristics of such goods, or to certify the nature, quality, type, or other characteristics of such services.

Collective Mark is a trademark or service mark used by companies or enterprises of the same group, or by members of an association, cooperative, union, confederation, group of persons, or any other state or private organization.

Is it compulsory to register a trademark?

Thailand does not officially require trademarks to be registered.

However, there are numerous benefits to be considered.

What are the advantages of registering a trademark?

A. Registering a trademark provides greater legal protection against counterfeiting and infringement as it protects a company’s name or logo and grants the trademark owner exclusive nationwide ownership of the mark B. Registering a trademark deters others from using your trademark.

The registered trademark will appear in trademark search reports ordered by others,

likely discouraging others from proceeding with registration of the same or similar mark, and C. Registering a trademark provides the trademark owner with greater remedies as it increases the likelihood of the successful filing of a dispute resolution case from an infringer.

How can a trademark be eligible for registration?

For a trademark to be eligible for registration, it must be distinctive and should not be similar or confusingly similar to a trademark registered by another.

The trademark must not consist of any characteristics mentioned in Section 8 of the Thailand Trademark Act B.E. 2534 (with B.E. 2543 amendment). The applicant or his agent must have an office or address for communication by the Registrar in Thailand.

What types of trademark cannot be registered under Thai Law? According to Section 8 of the Trademark Act B.E. 2534(with B.E. 2543 amendment), trademarks having or consisting of any of the following characteristics cannot be registered: • state arms or crests, royal seals, official seals, Chakkri emblems, emblems and insignia of the royal orders, and decorations; • national flags of Thailand, royal standard flags, or official flags; • royal names, royal monograms, abbreviations of royal names or royal monograms, or names, words, representations, terms or emblems signifying the King, Queen or Heir to the Throne or members of the royal family; • national or official emblems, names, monograms and flags of foreign states, international organizations, and head of a foreign state, unless permission is given by the competent officer of the foreign state or international organization; • official emblems and emblems of the Red Cross or appellations Red Cross or Geneva Cross; • a mark similar to a medal, diploma, certificate, or any other

The entire process takes approximately one year from the date of filing. However, trademark protection begins on the day the application is submitted.

How long is the trademark protection valid?

Registration of the trademark entitles the owner to protection of his trademark for a period of 10 years from the applicationfiling date. However, this can be renewed within 90 days before the expiration of each 10-year term.

When an application for renewal is filed within the prescribed period, the trademark shall be deemed registered until the Registrar orders otherwise. The renewal of trademark registration shall be in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed in the Ministerial Regulations.

Protecting accumulated wealth and providing for beneficiaries using offshore trusts available from prime, regulated jurisdictions.

Here we look at ways to protect accumulated wealth during one’s lifetime and beyond, and also how to mitigate multi-jurisdictional probate issues for beneficiaries.

Many expatriates and international investors will have assets of one form or another in more than one country that is not their country of domicile, for example, bank accounts, investment portfolios, property and other assets, and so should consider establishing offshore wealth protection and succession-planning vehicles.

What is a trust?

The concept of the trust was familiar to the Romans, but the origin of the modern trust is Anglo-Saxon and dates back to the Medieval Crusades.

During prolonged absence from England, a knight would transfer ownership of his property and belongings to a friend or trusted person so that if he should be killed, he could be certain that his wife and children would inherit his estate.

A modern trust is an established means of safeguarding an individual's wealth, ensuring their continued access to (and control of) the assets during one’s lifetime, and facilitating its safe passage to one’s chosen beneficiaries and or future generations.

A suitably worded trust can be very effective in minimising multijurisdictional probate issues, associated legal expenses thereof and long, frustrating delays for beneficiaries trying to locate assets in different parts of the world. Having a trust also removes the need to write a will in each country where assets are held (where that jurisdiction recognizes the trust concept) as ownership of the assets can be transferred to the care of the trust by a deed of assignment.

What assets can be held in a trust?

• Bonds, stocks and shares • Bank accounts • Fixed term cash deposits • Insurance policies • Real and intellectual property • Portfolio bonds and unit trusts • Private company shares • Pension plans and QROPS Indeed, most other asset types where legal transfer of ownership can be affected can be transferred into the trust. Assets held in trust do not form part of the estate of the settler and, consequently, the trustees are able to use them for the benefit of the trust beneficiaries without going through complex legal procedures. A suitably-worded trust can also help to reduce or eliminate inheritance tax or estate duty liabilities in the future.

Who are the trustees?

Professional trustees are appointed at the outset and have legal title to the assets, but no beneficial interest.

• They are not able to make a profit for themselves out of the assets.

• The assets are not available to their own creditors.

• They must use the assets only for the benefit of the beneficiaries.

• They operate under a fiduciary license in regulated environments.

Who are the beneficiaries?

The person (or entity) setting up the trust is called the “Settlor”, and they name the beneficiaries in a “Letter of Wishes” to the trustees that clearly sets out the parameters for the trustees to follow. For example, this may state that children should be provided for by having their education costs fully funded through university and receive an income at a pre-selected level. A spouse, or anyone else, anywhere, can be named as a beneficiary and provided with an ongoing annual income or lump sum paid directly to their bank account in any country. Assets can be safeguarded to protect the interests of minors or vulnerable members of the family, thus keeping them separate from other interests.

The Settlor remains as a lifetime beneficiary and will therefore be included in the Letter of Wishes. As such, he or she retains the authority to amend the list of beneficiaries at any time via written requests to the trustees, add or remove assets, and even to close the trust completely at a later date should it no longer be required.

In summary then, individuals with holdings outside their country of domicile should examine the possibilities of establishing a trust in a regulated jurisdiction to protect themselves, their assets, their chosen beneficiaries, and future generations.

Youth Focus Exercise Improves School Performance and Student Health

by Mark Grittner I had a talk with a parent the other day. His daughter was doing very well in all her subjects. His question to me was, since she is doing so well, what else should she be doing to improve? My response was, “exercise.” I told him to please be sure she is getting at least an hour a day of exercise. If you establish a pattern of regular exercise at a young age it tends to carry over into adulthood.

We would like our students to mix exercise with academics.

There is a lot of research that shows students need regular physical activity throughout the school day. Not only does activity prevent obesity but it also helps students perform better academically.

Most people now recognize that the age of computers has made us more sedentary. The hours that kids would spend outside running and jumping are now often devoted to video games

and computer work. Even those kids not playing video games are still spending hours chatting online with friends.

While there are social benefits to their chatting, the reality is that their physical conditioning suffers.

Our societies are exhibiting the highest rates of childhood obesity ever seen.

However, this doesn’t have to be the case for every child. The school and the parents can both work to make sure students get more exercise.

At MIS we are working to incorporate more exercise into the student school day. First of all, we are encouraging our PE

classes to be active. In my view, students should spend at least 80 percent of their PE time engaged in physical activity.

Most of our students also take swim classes. Swimming is one of the greatest ways to build conditioning. Students also need exercise outside the classroom to meet their exercise targets.

Most schools, including MIS, have regular breaks in the school day in addition to lunch-time breaks. These are times when students are often left to relax as they please. Realistically, after a few minutes, most will just “hang out’ with their friends. This is a time when we can offer optional activity programs.

Many students could then choose to play basketball, football, badminton or some other physical activity. Would that be enough exercise to meet the one hour a day minimum criteria?

The answer is: probably not. That’s where the parents come in. Even if the school provides an hour a day of exercise there is still the likelihood that this hour is lost on occasion due to special school events or holidays. It then behooves the parents to establish physical activity during home time. A family walk or bike ride in the park in the evening is one idea.

In addition, one of the great things about living in

Pattaya is there are many opportunities to enroll students in after-school activities such as Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, and volleyball.

These are great ways to encourage an active lifestyle.

Poleon and Bambi attended the Johor Bahru Chess Festival in Malaysia in December 2015 and Poleon won Gold in the Under 8 category and a cash prize for Best Unrated Player (for adults), while Bambi won Silver for Girls Under 8.

At the Thai School Chess Championship, Poleon won Gold in the Under 8s (winning every single game) while Bambi won Silver in the Under 10 Girls.

Poleon and Bambi then attended the Qualification Tournament for the ASEAN championship where Poleon again won gold, and was awarded sponsorship for the ASEAN Youth Group Championships from the Thai Chess Federation.

The pair have now been endorsed by the Thai Chess Federation to play in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championships in October 2016 in Batumi, Georgia.

GIS chess champs head to world youth contest

by Mark Beales Two students from Garden International School (GIS) are heading to the World Youth Chess Championships in Georgia.

Year 2 student Poleon and his sister Bambi, who is in Year 5, have been going to the chess club in GIS since early 2015.

Poleon attended the Thai Rapid Chess Championship (for adults) in autumn 2015 and had some good results. Poleon and Bambi played in the Thai Junior Chess Championship 2015, where Poleon was 3rd runner up and Bambi came 5th in their categories.

They are due to take part in the ASEAN youth group championships in Pattaya at the end of May.

Parents can work together to enroll their child and their friends in these kinds of programs.

When students are accustomed to regular exercise it sets up a pattern for a lifetime of healthy choices.

Errol Flynn’s last swashbuckler movie

A cod piece gem, according to fans Even many Errol Flynn enthusiasts don’t recall that The Warriors (also known as The Dark Avenger) was his last swordsman’s role in 1955, just four years before his untimely death. By the mid fifties, Errol was certainly past his best as heavy boozing and a loose lifestyle had both left their mark on his appearance and his girth. Still, he doesn’t look any worse than your average 46-year-old and better than some. Certainly that’s true of Pattaya at any rate.

The film is still a rousing good number about the Hundred Years War which was fought between England and France in the later Middle

Ages, all of it on French soil for control of large parts of the country, in particular the principality of Aquitaine.

Errol plays the Black Prince who is assigned by his dad, Edward the Third of England, to protect English interests and fend off the French nobles who are unhappy about having an English overlord. Well, who wouldn’t be? No wonder General de Gaulle tried to keep the damnable English out of the Common Market.

In trying to rule Aquitaine, Errol has a number of problems. His unhistorical girl friend Joanne Dru, who lives in a nearby chateau, just won’t understand the security risks

and insists on living without special protection. Needless to say, she is captured by the treacherous French together with her two small sons.

Joanne, who was best known perhaps for her appearance in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, has no real part in this movie. The plot wouldn’t be any different if she had been cut out altogether.

Another difficulty faced by Errol is that most of the English army has been taken back to London, so he is left with a rather skeletal force to defend the principal castle which is actually lifted from a disused film lot of the 1953 movie Ivanhoe, also shot in UK. The French nobles led by Peter Finch, playing Robert de Ville, try all manner of ruses to kill Edward including organizing a group of assassins disguised as petitioners. Needless to say, Errol and a couple of mates dispatch the lot to an early oblivion Errol survives many adventures in this movie.

He has a fencing bout with Christopher Lee, in a very early movie role of his, and Errol is clearly not the steely expert he was in, say, The Master of Ballantrae or The Sea Hawk.

But careful editing and use of a double ensures that he still

looks all right on the silver screen even when dashing about breathlessly. It’s lucky that knights in the fourteenth century often covered their faces with armour, thus preventing you from seeing who the guy really is.

There’s a small part for Yvonne Furneaux, born in 1928 and still going strong in 2010, as the French tavern maid cum prostitute who agrees to help Errol escape from the French. She has an amazing little ditty which must have escaped the censor’s attention.

“Everybody knows I am the girl for quelque chose. I caught him with his vizer down but he didn’t know what to do. So Marie had come and gone and he still had his cod piece on.”

What was The British Board of Film Classification thinking of?

Another bit part Noel Willman’s portrayal of du Guesclin, the high constable of France, who teams up with Peter Finch to lay siege to the English castle. Noel was later to become better known in a number of Hammer horror movies of the 1960s and the 1970s, but in The Warriors he is restricted to a couple of scenes where he laments Peter Finch’s failure to catch Errol

Flynn even though he had him in his grasp more than once.

The final scenes, the siege of the English castle, are amongst the best in the movie. Before attacking, du Guesclin boasts to Errol that “We have ten men to one of yours,” to which the Black Prince responds, “Ten French to one English, we’re fairly matched my lord.” You can see in these remarks why The French hated the English for hundreds of years and still aren’t all that keen.

The siege is distinguished by one of the few appearances of medieval cannon in a swashbuckling movie. These succeed in blowing the drawbridge off its hinges, but the French are still thwarted by a number of tiresome, English brushwood fires deliberately arranged as a warm welcome in the castle courtyard. Once Errol dispatches Peter Finch with a trusty axe, it’s all over.

England is saved in France until Joan of Arc in the next century really does determine to kick ‘em out.

Getting hold of a copy of The Warriors isn’t that easy.

Youtube has a few excerpts but not the whole film. It has never been released on DVD although there was a video

tape produced in the 1970s, difficult to find now. You could try the dealers at Amazon.com or download the whole thing from one of several internet sites specializing in this kind of piracy. Perhaps somebody could then download the whole film onto Youtube.

The Warriors was directed

by Henry Levin and the script written by David Bullman.

The film’s attraction is mainly because of Errol’s late appearance, but it’s also one of the very few spectaculars dealing with the earlier Hundred Years War before Joan of Arc arrived in force on the steps of Hollywood. They certainly don’t make ‘em like this any more. Perhaps that’s just as well.

by Steve Ellison Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees One quick note of congratulations to Thai pro Ariya Jutanugarn who is the first Thai to win the LPGA tour. After shooting a 63 on Saturday, Ariya took it to the wire and won by a stroke. At 11, she was the youngest qualifier for an LPGA event, and in 2013 we were heartbroken when she teed up on the 18th at Siam Old with a three stroke lead in the final round and ended up losing to Inbee Park. Great job, Ariya, on this long overdue win!

As an update to The Golf Club summer programme, we have returned to our regular schedule for Steak Nights on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Low season is upon us and golf numbers are down to four or five groups with the occasional outing with just 12 blokes. That said, the good news is the courses aren’t so crowded!

It was hot as Hades these days and the weatherman tells us this is the driest summer in 50 years. We just got in our new TGC branded golf hats which have a nice big floppy brim to keep your ears and neck in the shade, so that and a dozen bottles of water should do the trick.

Shameless plug is over, now back to the golf.

We are back to Green Valley today and found the course in good condition. There has been a bit of rain of late which is long overdue so the greens were pretty good but fairways a bit dry. No complaints from the peanut gallery as now many of the lads find their drives a further 40 yards down the fairway!

Pattana C & B – Stableford - Yellow Tees This course should be on the playlist of every golf organiser in town as Pattana got rave reviews from all the returning golfers this afternoon. We don’t play here in the high season as they tend to price themselves out, but it is great value this time of year. The clubhouse is nothing short of spectacular with 5-star resort facilities and a great clubhouse restaurant.

The results speak for themselves, and Kenny Aihara delivers another great round of golf for the win. Jeff Hunt and Ken Grimes fired very respectable rounds as well but Kenny dropped one putt more to finish with 42 on the card.

The Caddy Smile NP was won by Robbie Taylor, and Robbie was the only name on the list! Robbie got out early and placed a beauty to within 10 feet that no one else could match, so goodonya, Robbo!

It was a unanimous “fantastic!” when asked how they enjoyed this golf course, but that was not really a surprise.

Davie remarked on the similarity to the last two holes at TPC Sawgrass that Dye also designed before I had a chance to point it out to him!

Glad to hear that the B course is back open again, and it was found to be in great shape.

Sal returns to the Swan and makes his presence felt

by J. Olsen Stableford A special thanks must go to Pattavia GC! We were due to play Burapha this day but two days prior, when calling the course to book a caddy, I was advised that Thursday the 5th was a public holiday and we would have to pay holiday rates.

Green fee 1,400 baht + cart + caddy 2,400 baht all up. Rang around and was quoted 1350 baht all up at Pattavia!

Two buses were loaded and left the Growling Swan a little earlier than the scheduled 8:30 am departure time and all golfers happy with the change of venue and of course the price.

Adding to that the trip wasn’t as bad as it normally is, one thinks “The 331” has improved!

Weather was as good as one could expect for this time of the year, little or no breeze making it a hot day out.

Condition of the course was as good as always, lack of rain at this time of year was not evident. The greens lived up to and as usual were somewhat difficult to read and play.

Thank God for caddies!

Sal Brizzi returned from a spell in Australia and showed he was not going to mess about, with 38 points he set the pace for what turned out to be a good day for scores.

Khao Kheow (Stableford) Been a bit warm of late and still the golfers venture forth and walk around in the sun. Well some do, and on this day the scribe and his two playing partners zoomed off in their carts and were around in an easy three hours, leaving the walkers way behind. It has to be said, struggling in the heat. One said after 10 holes he really had to force himself to continue as the heat started to get too high. Mind finish he did.

The test for the day was to be the C and A nines in that order. I have to say that at the present time many of the courses on the circuit are really struggling with the lack of water, however, on this day Khao Kheow was in fine condition and was a pleasure to play. Obviously with the area being short of water, it is sometimes a problem to keep grass on the course but here it was fine. Indeed, the greens were in particularly fine condition and were firm and true with plenty of grass on. A

Local Sports Hooters performs well at 30th Talbot and Gibb triumph Bira Circuit Racing Event in the Phantom Cup!

Hooters cars were among 100 racing cars that joined the 30th anniversary racing event at Bira Circuit.

Hooters racing cars were BMW E36 3,000CC turbo with 490 HPW, and BMW E30 25,00CC with 435 HPW.

Bunker boys Crystal Bay B & C Stableford Yet another hot humid day in the land of smiles saw three groups make their way to a regular course on our schedule. Surprisingly even though it was a holiday there were not many on the course and we had a comfortable round without holdups. Tony Roberts was convinced he had won the day on his 39 points only to find he had been pipped at the post by an inform Stuart Tinkler with 40 points. The greens were in good condition but the fairways are suffering from a lack of rain.

The cars were driven by Urs Schoenenberger, a well known Swiss driver who also won the last event.

There were more than 100 cars that participated in the event in order to recognize Bira Circuit as the racing venue in Thailand over the years.

Silky Oaks Stableford Only nine players turned out for this venue even though it is a favorite of many of our players who like the challenge of the course from the longer tees. However the first group unknowingly teed off from the more forward tees resulting in easier carries over the numerous water features. This was evident from the winning score of 45 points by Mike Johns, a clear 10 points ahead of second and third. The greens and fairways were in good condition.

Results: 1st - Mike Johns (16) 45 points 2nd - Jimmy Carr (18) 35 3rd - Mashi Kaneta (16) 35 Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Mashi Kaneta, Les Humphrey Greenwood Medal A good turnout of 14 players for what must be the

best value-for-money course in the area. We were greeted by the greenest course we have encountered since the start of the heat wave with well grassed fairways and greens in excellent condition. Neil Carter was really on form today, shooting a two over par front nine before running into problems after a thunderstorm delayed play for about 15 minutes. Wet conditions were obviously unusual resulting in a few unnecessary dropped shots.

Mention must also be made of Patrick Kelly who also shot a subpar round off his 1 handicap. On the trip back to the Ranch, many golfers expressed their desire to return to this venue soon.

Green Valley – Stableford We had a very good field of 40 golfers signed up for the 11th Phantom Golf Cup which was played at Green Valley with an excellent green fee rate of 700 baht negotiated by “The Donkey”. 10:40 am was the earliest tee time we could get but it seemed to suit most and we got our first four ball away about 10 minutes ahead of schedule in fine but hot conditions. The golf course was in terrific condition, although some greens appeared to be a bit on the slow side. Despite the recent lack of rains, the fairways were mostly very green and lush.

Teeing off went very smoothly and the tenth group teed off right on time at 10:35am. The pace of the field was excellent and most groups finished their rounds in around four hours with most golfers looking the worse for wear after the oppressive playing conditions which probably contributed to the fairly poor scores for many.

We had two flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 18 playing Stableford, off the white tees and B Flight for golfers with handicaps of 19 and over playing Stableford also off the white tees, there were three places in each flight.

As usual, there were technical prizes for the two flights on all holes – eight for A Flight and eight for B Flight with a special prize for combined A and B Flights on the third hole which was nearest the keg on the fairway with the winner taking the prize of the contents of the keg to be consumed at Touch A Go-Go on LK Metro..

The A Flight winner was Brian Talbot with 38 points, and last month’s A Flight winner Peter Hynard

Phil Davies & Christian Boysen with Sisters Nim & New St. came second with 35 points.

In third place came Mark “Coops” Cooper with 34 points. B Flight was well won

by Larry Gibb who scored 39 points, with Darren Boyle coming second with 36 points and Tony “Captain” Cook was third with 35 points. The “nearest the keg” prize was won by big Phil Davies who, would you believe, does not drink but rest assured that Phil will take a bunch of mates down to Touch A Go-Go within the next few days to “empty the keg”.

a terrific buffet meal back at the Phantom Bar. John Davis Smooth as Silky Silky Oak – St With the hot weather in full swing and taking advantage of a Sports Day price, the Tropical Golfers headed out to Silky Oak. Most people were happy to go to a “carts required” course and take it a little easier for a change.

There is a lot going on now but still 14 dedicated golfers showed up.

Silky Oak is overall in fair-to-good condition, and the greens are in fine shape. It’s clear, the place could use some rain – who doesn't - but balls in the fairway were generally on grass. Silky Oak is an interesting but fair test of skill, strategy, and mental dexterity. The course is not as hard as it looks – and that is where it can be deceiving!

It forces self doubt on what are really straight forward holes. Stay in control and you can score there. Score people did! The scores were on the high side, and many people with 36-38 points expecting some reward were disappointed.

John Davis (h'cap 15) continued his streak of impressive golf with a sky high 42 points!

Excellent golf, John! Tom Herrington (15) carded a fine 40 points to take second place honors, and Peter Barry (18) was next with 39 points. Remember when playing Silky that you need to keep your head about you as the competition will be tough.

Rising Temperatures; Rising Pet Deaths Pattaya temperatures have been at recent highs for more than a month now. Not much of a problem for most people: We dress appropriately, seek out air-conditioned venues, increase consumption of beverages, etc.

Not so for our four-legged friends. A growing number of dogs and cats are succumbing to the ravages of scorching temperatures.

Dogs and cats don’t have the option of shedding their fur or insisting on A/C or demanding fresh water. Making matters worse, their ability to cool down is limited because their sweat glands are primarily in their paws.

Our little buddies do what they can to beat the heat by resting in the shade, spreading their bodies out on a cool surface, not exerting themselves, and panting. Note, however, that while it’s quite common for dogs to pant, only extremely heat-stressed cats will pant. So if your cat is panting, you need to be concerned that she is too hot. Cool her off immediately by wetting her fur with cold water, providing cool drinking water, and moving her to a cooler area.

Blackberry

Blackberry is the youngest kitten that we have here at the moment.

She is very friendly, full of fun and her mum is KitKat, so we are hoping that someone will choose them as a pair.

In dogs, panting is their major cooling technique; not always adequate when temperatures soar.

Beyond which, the insulation effect of their fur means they are prime candidates for heat exhaustion, particularly on long walks in the mid-day sun. Don’t.

Many dogs die of heat exhaustion and heat stroke at this time of year. What to look for? Sluggishness, very heavy panting, bright red gums, hypersalivation (which can progress to the opposite: dry tacky gums), vomiting or diarrhea, and collapse. In the later stages, death can occur rapidly if not treated in

an emergency animal hospital.

Especially prone to heat stroke are overweight pets, flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs, and dogs with dark coats. If you have any suspicion that your dog is showing early signs of heat exhaustion, stop, spray your pet with cool water (NOT ice!), and get him to a clinic.

Bottom line: Always ensure that your pet has plenty of fresh water available and a shady spot in which to relax and cool off.

Avoid taking your dog on long walks during the hottest periods of the day, and never, ever leave your pet in the car on a hot day.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being and perhaps answer some common questions.

Limps and Lungs

Dogs are sometimes taken to the vet for a limp and leave with a diagnosis of lung cancer.

What’s the connection? Cancer in the chest area can activate the dog’s leg bones to grow new tissue -- causing swelling and pain in the legs.

A more typical symptom of lung cancer is a cough, although about 25 percent of dogs with lung cancer have no symptoms whatsoever until the cancer is detected on a chest X-ray.

Once the cancer is treated, the leg problem -- called hypertrophic osteopathy – clears up.

KitKat is one of the most friendly cats that we have ever had.

She came to us pregnant and, a few days later, had 3 lovely kittens.

They are all grown up and only one is left for adoption.

So now it is her turn to find a new home.

This lovely pair have been with us for a while now, Both are friendly and although they are not brother and sister they are soul mates, so we thought it would be great to re-home them together if possible.
