Moving to Cambodia?

T

here’s a lot of talk at expat clubs and in the social media about long-term farang in Thailand switching to the neighboring country of Cambodia. Pattaya Today managed to track down a number of these expats to find out what are the main issues and whether

Cambodia is actually the promised land sometimes claimed. The reasons for European retirees considering a move from Thailand to Cambodia are plain to see. Many of these men - and they are mostly bachelors or widowers - have been living in Thailand

for several or more years and have become bored with their routine. Some claim that Thailand has become expensive - the recent decline in the value of the pound is directly related to fears about Brexit -

Twarted Police conduct random check rapist flees Pol. Capt. Vinai Sanitphan, protection and suppression deputy inspector of Pattaya police, led police officers in random

checking of pubs and go go bars on Walking Street to check for underage staff and drugs. None were found.

Beauty clinic robbed A would-be rapist was forced to flee wearing only a towel when his intended victim fought him off and screamed. Mintra Buapha, 34, said she was staying in her sister’s apartment in Pattaya when a man entered and invited both ladies to dinner. However, he soon abandoned dinner plans, instead forcing Mintra into his room and assaulting her. She fought him off and screamed to attract attention. The assailant fled.

Mysterious death in parked car

A burglary occurred at a beauty parlour on Soi Nernplabwan but the robber took only 10,000 baht of the 50,000 baht he discovered. The clinic owner Dr Wiruchsak Sukrittanon, 41, said he heard footsteps on the top floor but initially assumed it was a child spirit which he was currently venerating. However,

he then went upstairs and found that an access point in the bathroom ceiling had been opened. Surprisingly, a sum of money totaling 50,000 baht was still intact except for a modest 10,000 baht. Police are assuming this was a thief with a conscience.

Man dies during sex act Investigators admit they are puzzled by the unexplained death of an employee of the Insultec Company. The dead man, Yothin Photsu, was found in his car with his company ID, cash and a mobile phone. Also found was a bottle of liquor which had created a smell in the vehicle. Police say that an autopsy will be necessary to determine the cause of death. Senior sergeant major Songsak Dernkrajang added that the air conditioning in the car had been turned off which could indicate the intense heat may have been a contributory cause of mortality.

An unidentified foreigner died in a short-stay hotel room on Walking Street after promising a ladyboy 3,000 baht for sex. The transvestite, Supot Yiabpradon from Buriram and aged 22, said that the farang had taken him to a motel and began an amorous encounter during which he hit his head on a wall and fell to the

French expat found dead

Police rushed to a town house in Nongyai, North Pattaya, after neighbors reported that they could see a corpse through a window. On arrival they found Michel Jean Torterat, aged 77, dead on his bed but without any sign of violence or foul play. He had expired about five hours previously. A local caretaker told officers that the Frenchman had retired to Thailand 20 years ago after retiring from a job as car salesman in Europe. In recent years, he had been visiting local hospitals because of a diabetes condition. The house contained many medicines to deal with cardiovascular problems.

floor. Supot immediately went downstairs and called for the help of the cashier to try and revive the unfortunate guy. However, they failed and then summoned the police. Investigators said they were still investigating the bizarre incident even as attempts were made to identify the man.

News Ramayana Water Park gets the thumbs up from early customers Families who visited Ramayana Water Park during the opening week have been full of praise for Pattaya’s latest world-class attraction. In the first place both locals and tourists were pleasantly surprised by the cost of the full day pass which, at 990 baht for adults and only 790 baht for children, represents something like a 40 percent discount when compared to other theme parks with similar attractions. Not to mention that the little ones go free if they are under 90 cm tall. It has also been noted that the lines for each ride are impressively

short, with waiting times averaging between 6 and 10 minutes and some families happily reporting that they managed to hop onto an impressive 21 rides in around only three hours. Parents praised the two dedicated kids’ zones, which invite children to enjoy rides, climbs, water sprays and many other things to do. The concept of having one zone for the very small ones and the Aquaplay for the “grown-up” children is highly appreciated. The presence of more than 100 lifeguards give mum and dad the assurance that their kids are

not only having fun, but that they are also in safe hands. Happy customers are certainly returning and the opening months are going to be the perfect opportunity to experience one of the world’s most technically advanced and exciting water parks before the queues start to grow as the new season approaches. Included among Ramayana’s impressive features are a pair of unique, interacting water slides, an Aqua coaster which is of the three longest water rides in the world, free-fall and aqualoop slides with launch capsule

experiences. One attraction that left the crowds happy is the 750-meter long ‘Lazy River’ with integrated waves, waterfalls and whirlpools that takes visitors on a ride around the hill. The caves, sculptures and ‘Ancient City’ also offer remains from a long forgotten time and families can

take a breather at one of the many more relaxing zones and attractions including a unique double wave pool, world-class restaurants with international and local food, bars and activities that keep a family happy for the entire day and provide longlasting memories.

News Amazing Thailand Grand Sale returns for 2016 and is bigger than ever before The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) much anticipated annual Amazing Thailand Grand Sale (ATGS) campaign is back for its 18th successful year and will be held from June 15 to August 15, in cities nationwide. This year, there will be a special focus on female customers to celebrate the TAT’s Women’s Journey Month being held in August. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of TAT said, “The Amazing Thailand Grand Sale is now a hugely popular event across the region and boosts tourist and visitor expenditure as well as enhances the image of Thailand as a major shopping destination. It also encourages more local spending and creates jobs. We always look forward to welcoming the world to our sale and hope they take home happy memories as well as some great bargains.” The Amazing Thailand Grand Sale campaign differs from other events of its type in that as well as offering

discounts on a variety of goods, it is also possible to make great savings on tourism products such as accommodation, spa treatments, travel, car rental and wellness products. Taking part in the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale 2016 will be 15,000 tourism business operators in more than 110 department stores and shopping centres in seven major tourist destinations of Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, Hua Hin and Udon Thani. Outlets will offer discounts of up to 80 per cent on goods and services as a way of boosting revenue and promoting Thai products internationally.

Shoppers will also enjoy special discounts, trendy items from Thai world-class brands, and chic street items from Thai young designers. There will also be fun events and a lucky draw to win a “Travel 365 Days in Thailand”, which includes flight tickets and accommodation. The Amazing Thailand Grand Sale 2016 will kick off on June 15, with the 4th Shopping Challenge activity, which will see 13 teams of representatives from across Asia race around Bangkok’s best loved malls and shops to bargain for items as they compete for a 100,000 baht prize. Celebrities from across

Asia are coming to take part, and last year the first prize went to the Indian team. The Amazing Thailand Grand Sale campaign was started by TAT in 1999 and has grown considerably year on year. VISA International (Thailand) has been the campaign’s long-term partner, and this year will be giving a wide range rewards to all VISA cardholders attending the sale, allowing them to make even more savings. Cardholders also get an extra chance to win the “Travel 365 Days in Thailand” draw by being able to get two coupons for every 500 baht spent, rather than the usual one.

Water problems still persist

The rainy season may have arrived but that does not mean that the country’s drought crisis is over. The Thai meteorological office is predicting a modest future for downpours during the summer and autumn, atating that there will be “a little bit” more rain this year than last. The level of water in the country’s largest dams remains critically low and there would need to be two to three years of normal rainfall to allow them to recover to 50% of capacity.

The drought affects not only farmers but fruit growers whose produce in many cases is in ruins. Farmers have also lost money whilst some rural hospitals do not have enough water to run services. In Pattaya, there have been many predictions of storms and downpours, but these have rarely translated into reality. In fact, the city itself has had only four days or nights of substantial rain in the past month. The local reservoirs remain disappointingly low in terms of water content.

News Pattaya aims high in education

Driving Licences Many rumours about new driving licence regulations which would mean that first-time applicants would need to pass the multiple-choice written test with 100 percent correct answers rather than the 90 percent as at present. There is also discussion about whether drivers renewing their licences will be subject to more rigorous tests, both physical and mental. But an insider said that any new rules would be unlikely to affect existing drivers, Thai and farang, because the land transport offices nationwide are already straining because of the sheer number of people seeking their documentation.

Local officials hosted a special schools conference at Chonburi Indoor Athletic Stadium which gave recognition to schools which are providing good education in the city. Mayor

Itthiphol Kunplume said the city had a five year strategy to improve its education programmes to world-class standards in order to compete successfully with other Asean countries.

New police chief sets priorities

Driving Offences Apparently so many farang are now being stopped for road offences – turning right improperly or not having a seat belt or running an amber light – that the police forms will now be printed in English as well as in Thai. Let’s hope the translation is better than the informal one which was recently translated from a fine form: “Offence of not stopping when stopped at light”. Answers on a post card please! We have also noticed that minor traffic infringements increasingly carry a 1,000 baht fine rather than the 400 baht we knew a couple of years back. That’s progress. Pattaya Traffic The ever-expanding number of coaches on Pattaya’s overstretched roads is now creating long tailbacks all day and most of the evening. Wherever you look there are long lines of backed-up vehicles on main and side roads all over town. The resort’s roads were simply not designed to take this kind of load. Pattaya is now acquiring a reputation for Manilastyle traffic snarl-ups which are said to be the worst in Asia as regards city centres. The only solution in Pattaya can be a restriction on the size of the coaches. But there’s no great chance of that happening any time soon.

Police Colonel Chakthip Paraphantukul has been appointed head of Banglamung police station. He was welcomed to his new post by Anan Phueaukwatana, head of administration, who introduced him to other officers.

The colonel said he had studied local conditions and c concluded that major concerns included the danger of flooding, traffic snarls and motorbike-related crimes. He promised detailed plans within seven days.

Role playing for disaster

That Form Again The latest immigration three-page form which asks long-term farang to list their favourite hang-outs and social media sites seems to be gone. The last we heard it was on pilot in Bangkok but provincial offices were not using it. In any case, the more intrusive questions were said to be “optional” which makes you wonder what all the fuss was about. A favoured scenario is that the form will ever-so-quietly bite the dust. But this is Thailand, after all, so don’t count your chickens yet. Job Opening According to staff at Tukcom, the new technology centre, more and more older farang are now buying smart phones of one sort and another for the first time. Needless to say, they need quite a lot of help in breaking through the mystique and learning when to press and slide and when not to. Surely there’s an opening here for an enterprising soul to start offering inductions for a reasonable fee. One of the most common problems amongst the elderly is apparently how to transfer data from the old mobile to the new smart phone.

The Department of Disaster and Mitigation Chonburi hosted a simulation exercise in which a vehicle carrying chemicals collided with an oil truck. The exercise, which was

witnessed by officials from many government departments, illustrated the importance of relevant emergency agencies working together on a coordinated basis.

Exotic animals spawn raid

A raid was conducted on a building in Thappraya Road, Pattaya, after officials of the Forestry Department heard that a crocodile, a rare snake, an anaconda and an alligator, amongst others, were locked up there. Owner

Nittaya Itsarasilp said she was fond of these creatures and looked after them well. She presented licences and other documents, adding that she had even visited Africa to ensure she was up to date on the care of exotic animals.

Passports and Addresses It’s said that the main problem with the Bangkok British embassy’s system of renewing your passport is actually proving with a document your current Thai address. Amongst the acceptable paperwork is a letter from British central or local government to the Thai address, a Thai driving licence or a letter of residence from Thai immigration, duly translated of course. Actually, the emphasis on proving your Thai address seems slightly quaint as the passport, actually produced in UK, is sent back to Trendy House in Bangkok and not to the address you have proved. Cambodian Visa Fees In answer to several queries, a non-ASEAN national (probably you) now pays US$30 for a one month tourist visa or US$35 for what’s called an ordinary visa. The tourist visa can be extended in the country once for 30 days but the ordinary visa can become a 12 months one, with multiple entries, for a fee of around US$300. Visas can be extended at Cambodian immigration but most travelers use one of several travel agencies located on Riverside, the touristy area of Phnom Penh. Siem Reap and Sihanoukville also have this sort of service. Tinnies a Gem Open only a few months, Tinnies is as Australian pie shop and cafe-style restaurant located on Thappraya Road, very close to the Jomtien Complex. There’s a huge selection of meat, savoury and fruit pies and one secret undoubtedly lies in the very delicious pastry. Tinnies, run by Michael, is open from 9 am to 9 pm on a daily basis. Pattaya has a long history now of being home to several creditable pie shops of one sort and another. Try Tinnies as you are going to love it.

News Moving to Cambodia? Continued from page 1 or that the quality of the night life in resorts such as Pattaya has declined. Others point to what they see as police harassment of tourists, the perceived rise in street crime, the increasing traffic and the country’s uncertain political future. However, the grass tends to be greener on the other side. The three most popular spots for Europeans in Cambodia are the capital Phnom Penh, the town of Siem Reap near to the Angkor Wat complex and the seaside resort of Sihanoukville. Phnom Penh, of course, is the capital city now undergoing massive infrastructure improvements

amid a construction craze created by large-scale investments from China and, to a less extent, Japan. We talked to Jack, a 62-year old American who lived in Pattaya for five years before moving to Phnom Penh last year. He said that he found the daily cost of living generally cheaper in Phnom Penh except for accommodation, petrol, electricity and water. On the other hand, the American dollar is riding high at the moment. He added that his main problem was loneliness. He had a small circle of acquaintances but explained there were none of the meeting-place features of Pattaya such as expat clubs

or special interest groups. However, several bars now offer weekly quizzes. Michael, a 65-year old Brit, has been living in Siem Reap for six months. He concurred with Jack about the cost of living but said he chose Siem Reap because he knew people there and had an interest in Cambodian culture. He is a keen member of a research group attached to the local museum and also regularly attends an art class as well as taking cooking lessons. He found the cost of renting even a modest flat in or near the town centre expensive by Pattaya standards, but eventually chose a twobedroom bungalow a few kilometers out of town for

US$500 monthly plus water and electricity charges. But he explained he was thinking of moving as he is spending a lot of money on tuk-tuks or motorbike taxis. There is no organized public transport system in Cambodia. A British couple, John and his wife Mary, in their late 60s, managed to sell their Pattaya condo earlier this year and have moved to Sihanoukville into a newlybuilt condominium. They say it was a very good decision for them as the resort is much less crowded than Thai resorts and has a growing number of amenities, restaurants and resources. But they do admit that they are not short of money and can afford to spend around US$300 a day without affecting their overall financial position. They

explain they also like to travel round Cambodia, pointing out there is now a muchimproved highway to Phnom Penh and even a somewhat erratic air service to Siem Reap. From these and other similar reports, the best advice for those contemplating a move to Cambodia is to spend time there first and get to know the ins and outs. On the plus side, the visa regime is currently very liberal. One year visas are available for around US$300 (no income verification) and there are a number of travel agents in Cambodia who know the routine. Nor is the work permit regime as rigid or controlled as in Thailand. However, insiders say that changes are on the way, although no decisions

have apparently yet been taken by the interior ministry. Cambodia is a much smaller country than Thailand with only about a third of her population. On the downside, it’s wise to recall that there is no public transportation and the domestic air services are not too reliable. Although there are now several privatesector hospitals offering good quality medical care, they are not cheaper than Thailand. Public sector hospitals are often very basic. The night life is a good deal less interesting than that in Bangkok or Pattaya. The basic conclusion is that while Cambodia has its undoubted merits for the retiree, the advantages of a city like Pattaya should not be underplayed. You won’t find Fun City over there.

Two top hotels brands face off as Full Metal Dojo MMA signs sponsorship deals with Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts and Four Points by Sheraton

Full Metal Dojo, the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) organization, announced a major new partnership with two of the world’s leading hotel and resorts organizations. The two hotels will go head to head by each sponsoring the red and blue corners for the next three Full Metal Dojo MMA events in Bangkok, Thailand. The Mövenpick Hotel Sukhumvit 15 Bangkok will be sponsoring

the red corner, up against the Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok, Sukhumvit 15 in the blue corner. In MMA, as in boxing, the two groups of fighters on an event’s fight card are divided into red and blue corners, representing the stations for the fighters and their teams of corner men. Not only will each hotel brand see their names appear in the red and blue corners of the MMA fight cage, but

the two opposing groups of fighters will each be staying at their corner’s sponsoring hotel. The events will therefore see two groups of guest MMA fighters representing each hotel, before facing off against each other in the MMA cage, in a spectacular brand-versusbrand deal unseen before in combat sports sponsorship. At the press conference alongside Full Metal Dojo founder, Jon Nutt, Mövenpick Hotel Sukhumvit 15 Bangkok

GM, Simon Rindlisbacher said, “It is great to be part of upcoming FMD events again and seeing it getting more and more popular too. Also, happy to support Jon and his passionate and hardworking team too.” Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok, Sukhumvit 15 GM Peter Nicholas Lucas added, “We are delighted to be partnering up once again with the great FMD series in Bangkok. Jiratchaya “Mo” Sirimongkolnawin, a graduate in fashion design, was crowned Miss Tiffany Universe 2016 at Tiffany Show Pattaya. Jirachaya also won the Miss Photogenic and Miss Silky Skin awards. She won over a million baht in cash and prizes including a sedan worth 800,000 baht, plus a crown and a trophy.

Minanan Santap and Lananda Wattanasivilaikun were the first and second runner-up, respectively. More than 100 transgender entries came from different places in Thailand but only 30 were chosen to compete in the final round. Mo will represent Thailand in Miss International Queen 2017.

Beauty rewarded in Pattaya

Miss Grand Thailand, in collaboration with Pattaya City and Central Festival Pattaya Beach, held a Miss Chonburi competition at the popular mall. Miss Pinicha Kitkasemwongsa won the local title

and will represent the city in the national grand finals on June 26. Creating a good impression of Pattaya and marketing its many attractions are part of her role.

Hospital promotes safe swimming

The Bangkok Pattaya Hospital held its third annual water safety training activity designed to teach children how to save themselves or others in a dire emergency. About 40 young people joined the exercise which also included advice on what to do if bitten by a fish or other maritime creature.

Dancing katoey fined for indecency Following a video clip which went viral on the internet, police visited a Bali Hai restaurant where they observed a 23-year old ladyboy dancing and cavorting in skimpy and vulgar attire even as he invited customers to fondle his breasts. Most of the customers were Chinese and many did not understand that they were watching a performing transvestite. The ladyboy, Nat, was fined 5,000 baht for indecent exposure and creating a disturbance.

The UK debate about EU membership will finally be settled later this month. It has been largely a mud-slinging exercise in which one side and then the other has warned the public that they must vote this way or that, or risk losing a lot of money one way or the other. When David Cameron promised a referendum three years ago, in order to offset the growing attraction of UKIP, he could have had no idea of how the campaign would potentially turn out to be his greatest challenge to date. In reality, it is all guesswork as nobody knows what economic deals Britain might (or might not) be able to make with the EU or with the US if Brexit campaign were to win the day. President Obama has warned it is not in the UK interest to leave Europe, but then again who is likely to take much notice of what he says on this side of the Atlantic? Brexit makes much of the argument that Britain must regain her sovereignty by leaving the EU. But this is patent nonsense. Britain has already made many compromises about its sovereignty, some of which would remain in place if Brexit wins. In particular, the British have accepted for more than 70 years the existence on British soil foreign military bases, namely the US airforce. British politicians tend to remain silent about this matter, yet it is an amazing climb down. Before the second world war it would have been unthinkable that Britain would allow foreign basses on her soil. In other words, socalled sovereignty is already compromised. But neither the remain nor the leave camps in the current campaign are likely to stress this point. Then there is the matter of democracy. We all know that the EU suffers from a deficit on the democracy front, but then so does the British parliament. There is an unelected and absurdly-swollen House of Lords, which can delay legislation for up to a year, and a first-past-the-post electoral system which was fine when the country had a two-party system, but is very suspect in an age such as ours when a third of the electorate votes outside of the traditional box. In these circumstances, we must wonder whether Brexit’s attacks on the democratic weaknesses of the EU isn’t something of a diversionary attack. Even with regard to immigration, it is far from clear that a postBrexit UK would be able to control numbers as often promised by the campaigners wanting to quit. If the UK in that situation wanted to strike an economic deal with the EU, as Norway has done, it might well have to accept free movement of EU citizens in the economic grouping. It’s also true that UKIP supporters tend to be strongest in those areas of the country with the lowest internal migration. At its popular core, the anti-EU campaign is a movement of anger partly created by shocks of global change. Just as Donald Trump’s supporters in the US find it easy to blame Mexicans for their economic woes, so the Brexit lobby blames the EU for all manner of horrors. Since 1945, Britain has had to let go of its empire and many of the building blocks of the British identity have vanished – including a majority Protestantism and a belief in the country’s cultural uniqueness and superiority. It has been said that Britain has lost an empire but has been unable to find a new role. Brexit campaigners like to talk of renewed cooperation with the former British empire overseas, a revived union with Canada, Australia, New Zealand and US which might create a congenial substitute for the EU. Yet such a yearning for a new start is surely illusory. The origins of these ideas go back to the 19th century but are hardly plausible now. In fact, most US and Commonwealth leaders have urged Britons to vote to remain in the EU. They are in any case no longer pivoted to the UK: Australia is increasingly in the Asean sphere and the US is increasingly Hispanic. In parts of the US already, Spanish is spoken more frequently than English. It is certainly possible that the Brexit campaigners will win the day. They have fire in their bodies and a determination to succeed. The remain lobby seems much more staid by comparison and there is some evidence that they are less likely to turn out on the day of voting. Issues such as David Cameron’s offshore investments through his father are a turn-off to voters as they dislike being told their taxes must rise whilst their leaders, arguably, are salting their finances safely away. Even so, the hunger to escape from a contracting Britain by moving outside the EU is in some respects perverse. For example, one recent trend has been the growing hold of the English language in Europe. Go to Berlin and you can get by with English. In parts of California or Florida you need Spanish. In dreaming about a new global British future and in seeing this as incompatible with EU membership, Britons risk missing out on Europe’s opportunities today. Far better to remain in Europe and commit the UK to a sensible reform and reconfiguration. Nobody can be sure what will happen if Brexit wins the referendum. It is certainly a leap in the dark with unknown financial consequences. Voters need to remember that fact and turn out to vote in big numbers. A low turnout means Brexit has won.

The fifth Picnic in the P a rk a t t h e F a t h e r R a y Children’s Home raised more than 14,000 baht for the Home’s Education Fund. The first event took place in 2011. This annual event is organised by The Regents School and used a showcase for all the talented musicians and dancers that attend the school; the event didn’t take place last year as the Home was celebrating its twentyfifth anniversary. There were rock bands, boy bands, rappers, ballet dancers, groups of dancers, individual dancers, Thai boxers as well as instrumentalists, including a wonderful performance by one young lady who played traditional Chinese harp like instrument called the guzheng. Apart from the music and dancing there was also a bouncy castle, a small train

ride and a stall selling burgers and hot-dogs. Unfortunately the event had to finish early, much to the disappointment of all those who had spent many hours rehearsing, as the clouds got darker and nearer

until the thunder became louder than the music. Using electric guitars and plugged in speakers and amplifiers in a downpour is dangerous, so as the first drops started to fall and everyone ran for cover, that was the end of

the entertainment for another year. However, the rain did make sliding down the bouncy castle much more fun. The next Picnic in the Park will be held in 2017, and all we can hope for is that the rain stays away.

CSR Beach Cleaning The management and staff of The Bayview Hotel Pattaya and Wave Hotel Pattaya held another Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity “Beach Cleaning” on Pattaya beach. The Bayview Hotel Pattaya and Wave Hotel Pattaya organised this activity for their staff members to create awareness how to protect our environment while participating in cleaning the beach. It was a hot day but everyone was grateful to be gathering at the beach to pick up the garbage.

THE LAFITE SPIRIT Shines Through the latest French Wine Dinner at deVine Wine Club The Royal Cliff Hotel is justifiably proud of its awardwinning wine cellar which houses the most formidable selection of wines. Boasting more than 36,000 scrupulously selected bottles in its portfolio including over 1,000 of the world’s best new and old world wine labels and 15 varieties of the resort's own label selection, it is an extraordinary curated collection. To endorse the resort’s enthusiasm and passion for wine, the prestigious deVine Wine Club was launched in April 2001. Since then a pageant of leading wine makers have showcased their labels complemented by the haute cuisine of Executive Chef Walter Thenisch and his brigade. They are always eagerly anticipated events, enthusiastically attended and graciously presided over by Panga Vathankul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group. The latest French wine dinner was afforded by Les Domaines Barons de Rothchild – “The Lafite Spirit – a tradition of Excellence”. In addition to the wines produced from their prestigious vineyards, the Barons de Rothschild have created a range of more accessible wines for

everyday drinking under the aegis of the Domaines Baron de Rothschide. Fabrice Papin, the Asia Area manager was the wine specialist for the evening. The proceedings set sail with a selection of Chef Walter’s deluxe cold canapés enjoyed with a flute of Los Vascos Sauignon Blanc, Casablanca Curico 2015 - the Los Vascos estate having been taken over by DBR in 1988. It’s pure fruit flavour and lively refreshing palate made very good friends with selection of finger food especially with the brininess of the French oysters. It was then time for the assembled throng to be seated in the elegance of the Royal Grill Room. The first pour of the dinner was an excellent Aussieres Blanc, Vine de pays d’Oc 2012 which was served with a confit of Petuna ocean trout, poached river prawns with a green pea mousseline and a fennel and citrus salad. The hot smoked Tasmanian trout, known as the “Wagyu of the sea” was a revelation. With its intense colour and purity of flavour this course was the perfect companion to the 100% Chardonnay with its rich flavours of melon and grapefruit. The elegance of the fennel

slivers bathed in the intensity of the orange extract and the liberal portion of red caviar crowning the trout all contributed to an outstanding dish. The next course produced fricassee of Maine lobster and crab quenelle with a perfumed Nantua sauce. The coral lobster tails sat perched next to the spoon-shaped creamy crab were gently swimming in a serving of classic French Nantua (crayfish) sauce. It was a luxurious dish, perfectly executed and sensationally enhanced by the intenseness of the rich sauce. The wine chosen to escort this handsome dish was a Legende Bordeaux Blanc 2014. This 50/50 Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend worked well to support the lusciousness of the seafood fantasy. We were now heading towards the meat courses and the big reds of the evening. Herb crusted grass-fed Australian tenderloin on a bed of French flageolet bean stew was then served, the attendant wine being an Aussieres Rouge, Vin de Pay d’Oc 2013. It displayed delicate refined flavours on the palate combining 60% Cabinet Sauvignon with 40% darkly aromatic Syrah for a strong

red but with subtle notes of ripened tannins. The tenderloin fell under the fork with its sexy crunch herb crust and the small, creamy beans, much prized in Southern France, provided the sweet vegetable element to complete the roundness of the palate. The penultimate dish was – well just imagine a plate of rich meaty beef ribs with the succulence of bone marrow escorted by ever-so silky, buttery mashed potatoes sitting atop a velvety pool of red wine jus served with glazed baby carrots – and yes, it was a heavenly robust plate of deliciousness. Add the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon’s silky tannins combined with the deep notes of wild berries and cinnamon and this was one knock-out course. To round off a stunning meal we tucked into a top notch cheese platter featuring a sensational Gruyere, a cleverly sourced camembert made from goats milk and a moreish French blue. The final wine was a revisit to the Los Vascos vineyard this time to experience the Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua 2014. The cheeses, served of course, at exactly the right temperature were sensational. Swiss Gruyere

from pre-Alps shone through with its assertive creamy, nutty flavour, the artisanal Camembert and the piquant blue providing the farewell kiss on another marvelous evening of wining and dining Royal Cliff style. Coffee, tea and petite fours completed the seven courses but Mick and I were ready to climb into our taxi and sit back replete after such a gastronomic evening. The Royal Grill Room always go the extra culinary mile, the food is superb, the service unobtrusively terrific and the setting elegant and chic. If you’re thinking “hoity, toity” don’t - these events offer like minded wine and food lovers the opportunity to mingle and enjoy what they like doing best – tucking into a finely tuned dinner set off by a flight of convivial wines. THE JOMTIEN PIG & WHISTLE

Pub Grub at It’s Best

The British have been responsible for many inventions over the centuries but probably the most imitated worldwide is the good old pub. There’s hardly a country in the world that doesn’t boast an Olde English (or Scottish, Welsh or Irish) pub of some description. Their names have interesting origins, largely in the beginning from the masons and craftsmen involved in church building like The Masons Arms and The Carpenters. However Pig and Whistle is different as it is said to derive from two words “Piggin” and “Wassail”. A piggin is a vessel (such as a jug) used to carry ale and wassail means a toast as in “Good Health”. We have two pubs with that name here, one The famous Pig & Whistle Pub, Restaurant (and inn) on Soi 7, Pattaya which has been a constant here for many years through its many renovations and expansions. It is as English as Big Ben and beans on toast and its perennial popularity is attributed to its friendly atmosphere and hearty servings of traditional

pub grub at reasonable prices. The other is it’s sibling in Jomtien on Thappraya Road just as it turns down to Beach Road. From 8.30 am to midnight this kitchen is in full flight providing the class of dishes that has made the Pig & Whistle famous. Inside the new establishment, the décor is a modern, loungy sports bar with three big screens showing the matches of the day, a big comfy bar and banquette seating for friendly gettogethers and sociable events. The English breakfast menus are legendary and many a trencherman has been defeated by The Pig’s “full Monty” of two eggs, two English sausages, two rashers of Wiltshire bacon, baked beans, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried potatoes, fried bread plus toast and marmalade at only B.190. Breakfast meat heads would be well and truly satisfied with the No. 1. Special set: fillet steak (100gr) two eggs any style, bubble and squeak and mushrooms for B.195. Even those folk who enjoy a kipper for breakfast

are kept happy with the No.2 Special set: kipper, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for B.195. All the breakfast items, including the bubble and squeak and black pudding can be ordered singly or with any item of your choice. Mick and I visited the other evening to sample the English victuals and were very impressed with the hearty and the homely “just as Mum used to cook” quality of all this pub fayre. Come hungry though, the portions are huge and the staff

(especially Chef) disappointed if your plate isn’t licked clean before its return to the kitchen. After much deliberating (it all reads so well), we chose to kick off the proceedings with a portion of their signature chicken liver pate (B.120). Deeply rich in flavour and served with dark brown bread toast and garnish, it was top drawer and considering the size of the portion would make for a very good lunch or afternoon snack. Other starters include the perennially popular Norwegian prawn cocktail, spring rolls or one of their home made soups with the pea and ham variety coming highly recommended. We should mention the sandwiches now before we move on to the main courses. These are wonderful “door stop” affairs: huge slices of thickly sliced white bread generously packed with the filling of your choice, i.e. hot chicken, roast beef, bacon and egg, sausage and egg and even pork and apple with prices from around B.75. Half time by now and Mick and I were wondering where to take our taste buds for a nostalgic trip back to the times when the term “gastropub” had never been coined. We chose a traditional Wiltshire gammon steak served with an egg, fresh pineapple, garden peas and chips and the house bangers and mash. Three UK recipe fat chubby sausages were served with caramelised onions, peas, a gravy that shrieked “mmm Bisto” and a mound of buttery mashed potatoes (B.235). Mick meanwhile was tucking in and

Pig & Whistle Gammon

reminiscing about the last time he had enjoyed a gammon steak so much (decades ago!) and we were both waxing lyrical about this classic, traditional food that had successfully made the long trek from the British Isles to the Land of Smiles. Incidentally, the Thai menu abounds with over 30 items to please the most discerning Thai diner. No self respecting pub would be without fish and chips and here it is a house speciality featuring huge fillets of white fish deep fried in a “light as a feather” batter and served with mushy peas and Chef’s individual tartar sauce. So many mouth watering dishes on this menu – I haven’t even mentioned the famous Pig & Whistle mixed grill yet! Valiant trenchermen only are required to tackle this gourmand’s platter of sirloin steak, pork chop, lamb chop, pork sausage, liver, kidney, fried eggs, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried onions and chips. It will set you back B.500 but then you probably won’t eat again for a week! We really enjoyed the classic homely dishes here at the Jomtien Pig & Whistle. For a true taste of the best of British it would be hard to beat this most convivial pub with its hearty, nourishing food, friendly staff and welcoming vibe. The Pig & Whistle (2) is situated at the bottom of Thappraya Hill on the right hand side going towards Jomtien beach and opposite La Bocca restaurant. Open daily from 8.30 am to midnight. Hey, Old Timer, it’s not too late to pump iron As you know, strength training (lifting weights, doing pushups) is good for you. But did you know that it also can help you live longer? In a 15-year study on more than 30,000 people 65 and older, it was found that strength training twice a week lowered their odds of dying by almost half. Activities included muscle-strengthening activities for the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms. The research showed that in addition to being 46 percent less likely to die from any cause, those who do strength training twice a week also reduced death from heart disease by 41 percent and from cancer by 19 percent, compared to those who didn't do the training. Previous studies have shown

that strength training identified is a means to strengthen bones and joints and may improve muscle mass and chronic conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, lower back pain and obesity. Stronger muscles may also result in better stamina, physical function, and balance, according to background information in the study. Strength training of 20 to 30 minutes twice a week can be done at home and many exercises don't require equipment. Consider doing pushups, abdominal crunches and leg squats, all of which use one's own body weight. Property A Thai Representative in Washington D.C. Yes! The very first member of the United States Congress born in Thailand! I was in Washington, D.C., last month by special invitation to the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo as a delegate member of the world’s largest professional organization, with more than 1.1 million members throughout the United States and worldwide, the National Association of Realtors® (NAR). The NAR was holding its annual Mid-Year Legislative Conference attended by almost ten thousand American and international bilateral partners. The NAR has been supporting the business of real estate by strengthening the economic and legal conditions necessary to protect and promote property ownership throughout the United States and it is now reaching out to support the growing interest in property ownership throughout the world as property markets are rapidly expanding with globalization. This year’s annual MidYear Legislative Conference was where NAR members played an active role to advance the real

estate industry, public policy and the association itself. Realtors from all over the world came to Washington, DC, for special issues forums, committee meetings, legislative activities and the NAR real estate industry trade show. During the week we all attended many very interesting NAR Agency Visits in the Capital city. Our Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (RESAM) as special NAR bilateral partners had been invited to join in on these agency visits. The incredible learning experience on real estate policy and agency visits allowed each of us to engage in direct discussions with U.S. government officials. It was during our visit to the U.S. House of Representatives Department of Veterans Affairs that we all got to meet and sit down with Ladda ‘Tammy’ Duckworth-an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 8th congressional district since 2013. A Democrat, she is the first Asian American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House

of Representatives, and the first member of Congress born in Thailand! Duckworth previously served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2011, and as the Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs from 2006 to 2009. An Iraq War veteran, Thai born Tammy Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and suffered severe combat wounds, losing both of her legs and damaging her right arm. She was the first female double amputee from the war. Having received a medical waiver, she continued to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard along with her husband, Major Bryan W. Bowlsbey, a signal officer and fellow Iraq War veteran. Duckworth retired from the army in October 2014, and was reelected to Congress in November of that same year. Voters in Illinois will elect one member to the U.S. Senate in the November election, and Tammy Duckworth is running for that seat against incumbent Senator Mark Kirk (R). The race is seen as a tossup by the reputable Cook Political Report. Though Kirk has branded himself a moderate candidate, national Democrats are expected to target Illinois as an essential seat needed to regain majority in the U.S. Senate. Furthermore, Kirk is seen as vulnerable given Illinois' tendency to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats during presidential elections. Speaking of the US political scene, many may be surprised to learn that the National Association of Realtors has its own, wellorganized and well-staffed political party known simply as the REALTORS® Party. The REALTOR® Party Convention & Trade Expo is the event where Realtors and association leaders come together to speak in unison on issues that pertain to real estate. And it’s an opportunity for all members to respond to and initiate change at all levels of government – federal, state and local. The entire reason I was invited

Legal Advice

LEGAL ADVICE

by Magna Carta Law Office

Transfer of Property Ownership in Thailand Where and when does the transfer of property ownership take place? The registration of the transfer of property ownership from the owner or developer to the buyer will take place at the Land Office. The transfer of property takes place after the property is built, the contract has been signed, and all the installment payments have been made. The remaining balance of the purchase price is usually paid on the day of transfer at the Land Office. What are the taxes and fees I must be aware of when purchasing or selling a property in Thailand? Whoever buys or sells a property in Thailand should be aware of the following taxes and fees: Land Registration (Transfer Fee) The rate is 2% of the appraised value of the property. Stamp Duty/Fee 0.5% of the assessed value or the actual selling price, whichever amount is higher. Stamp duty does not have to be paid if the specific business tax is applicable. Specific Business Tax 3.3% calculated on the basis of the government appraised value or the actual selling price, whichever amount is higher. This tax only applies if the property is sold within the first five years of ownership. Otherwise, a stamp duty will be assessed instead. Income Tax Income from the sale of a property is subject to income taxation. This is calculated based on the government appraised value of the property, the length of time it has been owned and the applicable personal income tax rate. When the property seller is a company, the withholding tax is 1% of the selling price or of the assessed value, whichever is higher. When the property seller is an individual, the withholding tax is calculated on a progressive income tax scale.

Under Thai tax laws, the land office must take the income withholding tax at the time of transfer of ownership. What are the documents needed for property transfer? Condominium 1. The title deed for the property (Chanote) 2. Document from condominium juristic person stating that all maintenance fees are paid up (Letter of Debt Free) 3. Copies of the passport(s) or other identification documents of both the buyer and the seller 4. Copies of the entry stamp(s) in the passport(s) of the foreign buyer and/or the seller 5. Foreign Exchange Transaction Certificate or Thor Thor 3 (for purchases in the name of a foreigner only) 6. Company Documents updated for the last 3 months Land and House 1. The title deed for the property (Chanote) 2. Copies of the passport(s) or other identification documents of both the buyer and the seller 3. Copies of the entry stamp(s) in the passport(s) of the foreign buyer and/or the seller 4. Company Documents updated for the last 3 months What is a Foreign Exchange Transaction Certificate? Why is it necessary? Foreign Exchange Transaction Certificate or Thor Thor 3 is a legal document issued by banks upon receipt of foreign currency into your bank account in Thailand. This must be requested from your bank when you are remitting funds to Thailand for the purpose of purchasing a condominium unit. In line with a foreigner’s acquisition of a property, it is Thailand government’s condition that the money used to pay for the purchase price must originate from an offshore source in the form of foreign currency. This certificate shall be presented to the officer at the land office where ownership

of the condominium unit will be registered. Failure to comply with this requirement will prevent the registration of the property under the purchaser’s name. Can a foreigner share ownership of land with his or her Thai spouse? A foreigner married to a Thai national is not allowed to have any form of joint ownership in land together with his or her Thai spouse. Any land acquired in Thailand during the course of their marriage cannot be a conjugal property but shall only be a personal asset of the Thai spouse. When a Thai national married to a foreigner requests ownership registration of land in Thailand, they both have to sign a joint declaration at the Land Department, with evidence showing, that the money used to purchase the land belongs to the Thai spouse. The Land Department must ensure that the land becomes a personal property of the Thai spouse only and will remain as a non-marital asset. Can a buyer/seller appoint a proxy if they cannot be present at the Land Office personally? A buyer or seller of real property can authorize another person to handle the transaction on their behalf by filling in and signing the power/letter of attorney form specially provided by the Land Office. The government provincial and local Land Department's branch offices in Thailand only accept the official standard Land Department's Thai script 'Power of Attorney' (Tor Dor 21 for land and house; Or Chor 21 for a condominium).

TAT mega fam trip to explore Eastern Thailand and Cambodia Top media from Europe and the Middle East are currently embarking on over a week-long mega joint familiarisation trip that combines travel opportunities in Thailand and Cambodia. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) together with Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia and Bangkok Airways hosted the fam trip from May 15-23, as part of a wider ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) connectivity initiative and to highlight secondary destinations in Eastern Thailand that can be combined with trips to neighbouring Cambodia. ASEAN officially launched the AEC last December and one of the objectives is to facilitate cross-border travel within the community. Tanes Petsuwan, TAT executive director for Europe, Africa and Middle East Region said, “This mega fam trip will create awareness of Thailand’s gateway status to neighbouring ASEAN and provide insights and inspiration to build multi-destination itineraries while offering exceptional holidays along our Eastern Seaboard provinces. Thailand is also a convenient entry and exit point to explore destinations in neighbouring Cambodia”. TAT offices across Europe and

the Middle East invited 40 media representatives. They are currently participating in the fam trip, which includes product briefings and updates on new destinations and attractions woven into an eight-day itinerary featuring Eastern Seaboard Thailand and Cambodia. Positioning Thailand as an ASEAN gateway, the mega fam trip programme underscores the potential for multiple destination holidays that explore neighbours Cambodia, Lao PDR., Myanmar and Vietnam. The latest mega fam trip project is based on routes and themes that will illustrate the diversity of travel opportunities in Eastern Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia. The mega fam trip offers three thematic routes focusing on Ancient Wisdom, Heritage and Nature; Heritage Rediscovered and Exploring the Beaten Track for the first four days in Eastern Thailand. They will be followed by a trip to explore Cambodia, crossing the border in Trat province in Eastern Thailand. Ancient Wisdom, Heritage and Nature covers the route Prachin Buri to Chanthaburi. The trip focuses on medical tourism products such as the study of traditional medicine and its fascinating history linked

Honoured for putting the customer at the center and building a culture to win

to the Chao Phya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital. There is also a visit to the Ban Dong Bang Samunphrai Community to plant medicinal herbs, while enjoying time-out at the Chanthabun Riverside Community. Heritage Rediscovered covers the route Chanthaburi to Trat. It explores the tourism products and lifestyle experience of the Chanthabun Riverside community and visits historical sites at Wang Suan Ban Kaeo and Ban Luang Rajamaitri Historic Inn. The focus on communitybased tourism extends to a gem mine and a community famed for its gem cutting and polishing in Chanthaburi and the Ban Chang Thun community and Trat Museum. Exploring the Beaten Track covers the route Nakhon Nayok to the Chang Island archipelago in Trat province. The trip focuses on river related and marine soft adventure activities such as rafting at Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam and a visit to Chang Island’s famed beaches and archipelago where island communities are noted for sustainable tourism experiences like marine tourism in the Ban Nam Chiao community TAT’s multi-destination fam trips are based on feedback that suggested more than 60 percent of media and travel agency participants on past trips sought to combine more than one ASEAN destination into their tour itineraries.

Youth Focus Teaching teenagers Teaching teenagers is a challenge for most teachers. I’m currently a Mandarin teacher teaching from Preschool B students to Year 8 students (aged from 3-13 years old) at Mooltripakdee International School (M.I.S.). Due to the wide range of

students I have to teach, I’ve gotten to know that teaching teenagers is totally different from teaching the younger kids. First of all, teenagers are much more difficult to manage. The classroom management skills which work well in the younger kids will not be working for this age group. Teenagers are big enough to have their own way of thinking. If you simply

shout or yell at them to make them behave that is definitely not going to work and will only make things worse. But if you do nothing or are too soft to them, they will feel free to do anything in your class and of course they can’t learn anything. Then you may

ask, what is the solution to this issue? What should I do? The answer is to build a good relationship with the students. If the students like you, they won’t do anything to make you feel bad. Now the problem is how to build a good relationship with the students. Firstly, you have to really care about them. You care about their emotions, their needs, and their physical issues. For

Crazy Hair Day Students from Garden International School (GIS) sprayed, twisted, waxed and pulled their hair into a range of styles and colours to celebrate 'crazy hair day'. There were lots of weird and wonderful designs from students and teachers, and one

of the 'highlights' was seeing follically-challenged Mr Whittle donning a fine set of 80’s-style hair! Well done to everyone who took part and to Eagle House for having the craziest hair.' Joshua Carr is a house coordinator at Garden International School.

example, if someone gets a headache and you’ve noticed that in the class, you can find the medicine for them or help to call their parents to pick them up. You never humiliate or embarrass anyone in front of their friends. If you want to talk about their issues you could talk to them privately. You should be open to their ideas about what kind of topics they want to learn in class and if they’ve got some good ideas it’s worth it to adjust your teaching plan a little bit to add them in. However, the key to building a relationship with the students successfully is the correct balance between respect and authority. If you are not close to them, you won’t be able to build the relationship. If you get too close to them, they may see you as their friend instead of their teacher, they won’t be scared of you. It’s hard to know how far you should go. You should make the students scared of you, but out of respect not fear. You should transmit the idea that you are the one who is in control of the class, but out of class you could be their friend. You could play with them and you are happy to talk about their daily life and share stories with them. A successful teacher can make the students behave in class and out of class they can be quite close. Another challenge about teaching teenagers is how to motivate and interest them. It’s important to create a positive learning environment in which they feel happy and motivated to learn. Once they find that the class is boring they would give it up and stop learning anything. As I mentioned before, teachers should talk about topics that relate to their daily life.

They would not be interested in anything that happened a hundred years ago! But we couldn’t change all the topics in our textbook to the ones that the students are interested in. What we could do is change the way we deliver the topics to the students. For example, when I teach them how to introduce yourself and someone else in Chinese, instead of just reading the textbook, I would create a role play about meeting new friends at a party where students have to actually act in the situation and practice how to do it in their real life. I could play some Chinese music as the background music to make them not be nervous. By doing the role play they could quickly pick up the vocabulary and grammar in a natural way. Finally, each child deserves a champion, never give up on them. We should insist that they become the best that they can possibly be. This job is tough, but it’s not impossible. We can do this, we are educators and we are born to make a difference! Lei Chen is a Chinese teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Diana Group awards scholarships

Diana Group once again awarded educational scholarships to their employee’s children. “This project is already on going for 27 years and we have financially assisted hundreds of children,” according to Managing Director Sopin Thappajug. This year they awarded 32 scholarships for kindergarten, 15 for primary, eight for secondary, nine for vocational courses and eight for college.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories There have always been those who doubt Hitler’s alleged suicide in the Berlin bunker in 1945. After all, he could conceivably have escaped. Nazi aircraft were still leaving Berlin’s Tempelhof airport as late as mid-April – a couple of weeks before Hitler’s disappearance – and there were a host of

Hitler at the age of 75 in retirement

post war sightings. One claimed that the Fuhrer managed to flee to Dublin, a neutral power in world war two, where he became a croupier in an underground casino. The source for this unlikely tale was an Irishman who said he had made a fortune at blackjack after the erstwhile fuhrer kept dealing him picture cards and aces. Asked to verify the story, the Irishman showed a pack of cards. Apparently, Hitler departed from Dublin and spent his last years as a matador in Spain under the watchful eye of general Franco. As suggested in the movie The Boys from Brazil, other writers have suggested that Hitler was cloned after bits of his hair were smuggled out of the collapsing Reich. Scientists working in

Did Hitler become the McDonalds clone? South America even managed to create several Hitlers and one of them became extremely famous as a clown selling hamburgers. The real Hitler would have been upset by this development as he was a strict vegetarian in later life. Close examination of aerial maps of Antarctica suggest there was a nazi naval base here to which Hitler fled after the end of the war. Theorists speculate that the Americans blew up the place with atomic weapons in the 1950s which conveniently explains why you can’t see it today. The problem with this theory is that whilst the Americans did test atomic weapons in the 1950s, they were nowhere near the sites identified by writers as being in the shape of a swastika. There is even the possibility that Hitler made it to the moon or even beyond. After all the nazis were first to put into operation ballistic missiles in 1944 and they may have managed to keep secret the outer space variant. When challenged to say why Hitler would want to go to the moon in the first place,

supporters of the idea say this is not a problem as he was joined later on by Elvis Presley and a host of other pop stars who used a standin at their funeral. Sorry that should be lie-in. There is even a book on Hitler’s escape from Berlin in flames in 1945. Ron T.Hansic published Hitler’s Escape and emphasized that the most authoritarian doubter that Hitler shot himself and swallowed cyanide was Joseph Stalin. Hansic argues, along with Stalin, that there was a double in the bunker during Hitler’s late reign and he took his master’s place. In truth, there were several doubles of Hitler around in 1945 but none of them were discovered in the bunker or even near it. Hansic repeats the claims of Gestapo chief Heinrich Mueller who told US interrogators in 1948 that he had arranged the escape from Berlin in a plane of both Hitler and Eva Braun on April 26. Apparently they landed in Spain and lived happily ever after. The problem with this theory is that Mueller disappeared at the end

of the war and was never interrogated by the Americans or anyone else come to that. In reality, there really is not any doubt that Hitler did commit suicide in the bunker. His corpse, badly burned it’s true, was found in the Chancellory garden by the Russians who performed an autopsy. They also found the remains of Eva Braun. Dozens of nazi survivors from

the bunker testified after the war that Hitler had died there. Indeed, he had threatened to take his life on more than one occasion as it became obvious the nazi cause was lost. “Just one second and it’s eternal rest,” he told his generals as he fondled a revolver. He even had poison tested on his favourite Alsatian pet Blondi. McDonalds can rest easy – Hitler was no clown.

6 Marriage Advice For Newlyweds Ah, marriage! If you’re newly wed, you’re probably feeling like you have the best marriage ever and nothing will ever go wrong. Unfortunately, sooner or later, the honeymoon is over and real life intrudes into your happiness…

What’s important to remember is that there’s no reason to let real life stress threaten your relationship. Keep the honeymoon feeling going by remembering these tips for a healthy and happy marriage: 1. Don’t Forget Yourself Many women find themselves spending most of their time with their husband and his friends, neglecting their own friends and interests from before the wedding. Don’t make that mistake – keep in touch with your friends and make time for your family. 2. Be Open About Money Matters Money is the source of most newlywed arguments, and disagreements over how to handle cash is major reason for separations. It makes sense, really; you’re both accustomed to being in charge of your own money, and you likely have different opinions on how to spend and save. That’s why money matters should really be a topic of discussion long before the wedding takes place; these days, it’s not uncommon for couples to get financial counseling early to help avoid problems later down the line.

4. Make Your Spouse Feel Appreciated Make sure your spouse never feels taken for granted by always taking the time to let them know when they’ve done a good job. You should make a regular habit of finding something you appreciate about your spouse – and letting him know it. We know that no one can play the adoring spouse all day, every day, but the fact is that a happy relationship doesn’t just happen by accident. It takes a constant effort to create a loving atmosphere that lasts. It’s the small things – a kiss on the cheek, a love letter in a lunch bag or a little unexpected gift – that keep love strong. 5. Realize And Accept It: He’s Not Perfect There’s a joke that women marry a man the way he is, and then spend the rest of their lives trying to change him. While you may have dreams of training your man to be the perfect husband, it’s time to wake up and smell the reality. He’s human, he’s not perfect and he’s going to do things that make you crazy. Instead of letting his imperfections make you nuts, focus on the good things he does. When you feel like tearing your hair out as you pick up his underwear from the bathroom floor AGAIN, think about the way always makes sure your car tires have air in them. Remember that there are hundreds of little things he does right. Remember that there may come a day when you’ll truly miss seeing his dirty underwear on the floor. 6. Don’t Go To Bed Angry

You should be the one person your spouse knows they can always go to talk about his deepest emotions, his fears, as well as his ideas. And he needs to know he can do that without judgment, without criticism. Listen with empathy and without feeling like you have to “fix” things. The ability to sit and listen will open you both up to more honest communication and acceptance, which will draw you closer and make your relationship stronger.

(Jan23-Feb22)  Aquarius The stars say you really need

to reassess your financial situation before making any big decisions. This is likely to show that you can scarcely afford public transport let alone buy a new car. If you wish to continue killing yourself by excessive drinking then it will be necessary to cut out most foods, vitamin pills and bottled water. Edgar Allan Poe was born under this star, or at least the noises in his head were. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) With the Heavenly Twins in the ascendant this month, the good news is that you will shortly be taking a journey in a very expensive vehicle. The bad news is that it could be a hearse. So do not hesitate to take out bank loans and run up debts on your credit card. The chances are that you will not live long enough to worry about the legal consequences of annoying financial institutions. Anyway, your lucky color is deepest black. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) Get ready for adventure, ups and downs and lots of feelings in your stomach which won’t necessarily relate to rides on the Big Dipper. A friend will show a greater interest in you than you think likely. This is probably because he has heard you are about to make a new will or have just won first prize in a lottery. Anyone lurking outside your main entrance with a bulge in his pocket must be avoided. It could be a gun. Taurus (Apr23-May22) M eeting someone new whilst you are networking will lead to a long-term connection. However, the stars can see some sort of barred window. This could be a warning not to get involved with a criminal planning to rob a bank because you could both end up in prison for a long time ahead. Your unlucky number is 14528890765411-97 which could be a phished bank account. You have been warned. Gemini (May23-Jun22) Love is in the picture again but, because you are a Gemini, this will probably be a sordid sexual encounter such as you have had many times in the past. Look out for a person in a raincoat eating fish and chips out of a newspaper, as this is likely to be your latest conquest provided you have some spare change in your pocket. Lucky number is blood orange which is very worrying. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) Once again depression is taking over your life as Castor and Pollux hide behind the moons of Uranus where they will remain for a considerable time. There isn’t much you can do about the situation but try to look on the bright side. For example, if a friend refuses to advance you a small loan rejoice in the fact that his marriage is about to break down. Try not to think about coffins as they are bad for morale.

3. Listen When Your Spouse Needs To Talk

It’s probably the best known of all marriage advice, but there’s a reason for that – it’s important. The marriage bed is a private and personal space, and there’s no room for anger in it. That doesn’t mean that you have to solve the problem, or that someone has to “win” the argument – you can always agree to disagree. But one way or another you should let it go and go to bed without anger. You can always agree to “take a break” from the argument and finish it up in the morning – odds are, you’ll see things in a very different light by then! If the dispute hasn’t been settled, agree to tackle it in the morning – you’ll likely have forgotten why you were even angry in the first place. Leo (Jul23-Aug22) Consider your relationships anew and what improvements can be made. If you a person who shouts and screams at his partner every day, then try to do it only three times a week. You will be surprised how grateful people can be. Try to avoid some of your other bad habits such as uprooting the plants in the neighbor’s garden or stealing the nuts left out for the birds. Attila the Hun was a Leo. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) Relaxing at a spa is a very good idea in your current stressed condition but try to avoid going at busy times. The sight of your very ugly body will cause most people to scream and the others to flee in terror. You must also avoid stupid actions when you visit a specialist, such as wearing a monocle at the optician or carrying a stethoscope into the doctor’s surgery. They are likely to refuse treatment. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Loneliness is haunting you as usual. Make your residence more attractive to other people by installing electricity or completing the roof. You simply cannot go on taking people for granted. If you invite people round for a meal, then do not give them the number of the nearest take-away because you yourself should be importing the food. It has been shown that many people in lunatic asylums share your zodiac sign. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov 22) The stars are united in suggesting you should try some new activity, but you need to be on your guard lest novelty leads to the madhouse. You may not be suitable for joining a bridge club if you don’t know a heart from a spade and registering with the local nudist club will bring complete disaster with a figure like yours. You can’t help being an ignoramus but at least keep it to yourself. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) It’s best to wait and see what everyone else does before behaving stupidly. You need to learn to count to ten before committing yourself to a stupid plan. For example, you must not jump into the freezing sea whilst there are enough lifeboats for all. Please avoid putting yourself in impossible situations such as entering for a beauty competition or putting yourself up for election. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan22) An opportunity to change your career is clearly shown as Venus looms into view at this time of the year. However, you do need to take another look at your curriculum vitae and make a few changes. For instance try to cut down the detail when asked to give details of your terms of imprisonment and do not rely on horror movies and pornography in the hobbies section. Sadly you are your own worst enemy.

by Derek Brook Treasure Hill – St Hello Pattaya golfers and those interested! The date above is no misprint, the Tropical Golfers played on Thursday instead of the usual Friday this week due to a Thai holiday. Never mind the courses are no busier on such days, they charge increased rates. Sixteen golfers headed out to brave the heat and then have a long weekend. Treasure Hill has a good special on now with just 250 baht to rent a cart (not share) with their ‘All In’ deal for those looking to take it a bit easier.

Greenwood B & C Courses Heavy rain all night that continued as we left Pattaya reduced numbers and only eight made it to Greenwood. To our surprise the rain cleared and we played a course in terrific condition in beautiful weather. Geoff Parker made a welcome return to the winners' spot with 34 points; there was a three-way tie at 33 points for second with Tony Robbins edging out Stuart Tinkler and Jimmy Carr on count-back. This course is in excellent condition and very good value with the current discount package and seems to be one of the few courses that is not suffering from the recent heat wave.

Winners (L-R) Landis Brooks, Barry Elphick, John Davis, Steve Truelove

were three “37-pointers” with count-back finishes of Barry Elphick (28), John Davis (15) and Steve Truelove (8). What a finish! Good playing, guys.

Stay hydrated everyone and happy golfing. Near pins: Steve Truelove, Graham Buckingham, Dick Warberg, Barry Elphick

Steele rises to the occasion! This course is definitely improving as the years go by and with the very affordable golfing prices, friendly staff and caddies all eager to help; it would be no surprise to see this course frequented by us again soon. We had three golfers come in with a tidy score of 41 points, Denis Steele (41 points) taking A flight (on count back) from Alex Field with Graham Rice taking out 3rd. Ernie Picken with his 41 points takes B Flight with Lindsay Slender and David Allen filling the other 2 spots on the podium.

Pleasant Valley

Ernie Picken and Alex Field We had 21 eager golfers ready to board the buses to tackle Pleasant Valley, three golfers were heading out by car to join us for a day’s golfing. Well what happened on the way is anybody's guess. At 9:10 I got a call asking me “Where is everybody, we are the only golfers at Pattavia, we should be at Pleasant Valley”. We had 21 eager golfers! This golf course improves with every new visit, fairways were in good condition, although in places there was water on the track it played to most golfer’s satisfaction. We went from the front tees, which given the amount of rain that has been soaking all the courses lately resulting in very little run was the smart choice of the day. Greens were still traveling a bit slow. But that is normal here at The Valley

Golf from Bunker Boys by Frank Quinlan

The course would be classified in good-to-fair condition considering the time of year. The fairways were mostly green but there were enough bare patches too. Greens were good. The layout at Treasure Hill is interesting, the course scenic, and that #16, par five, crocodile hole is tough to par! Back in the clubhouse it seems the scores were all over the place more than normal. While the poor performers moped the winners were announced. On top of the hill was Landis Brooks (hcp 10) with a stellar 40 points! Great course management, Landis. Next

the staff are helpful and the renovation of the B course is applauded, however, we were disappointed to see the lack of attention to the bunkers with numerous instances of weeds encroaching. Peter Allen set off like a tornado and with 21 points on the front nine looked to finally break that magic 100 score. However, golf bites back and his back nine 14 points for a total of 35 again left him over 100 and being knocked off the podium by Neil Carter with 36 points . It is getting near the end of the month and things are getting tight in golfer of the month with only 4 rounds to go and only seven shots separating five players with Tony Robbins heading Stuart Tinkler by one and Neil Carter by three.

Back at the Swan we welcomed newcomer Joe Marschke and with the farewell of Russell Calcutt we were left with plenty of time to get rid of a few cold throthies. As usual Thursday brings us a meal complements of the Swan. Once again Alex Field set D-For off the chain to collect donations for the underprivileged from Pattaya. This dog has collected much needed funds to help the less than fortunate of Pattaya and surrounding areas with tens of thousands of baht having been injected over the past few years to several institutions and needy families via the PSC. The GS is a “friendly” golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers, young and old, male or female to have a hit on any of our weekly outings. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey if you are interested in playing on 086 150 3086. The fairways were wet of course but one could always find relief from the “casual water” and although the first green we played after resumption was quite wet, after that all the greens were ok. I have to say though that the golf course in ordinary shape at the moment with many bare patches on the fairways although the greens were fine. We continued without further interruption and our round was finished in four hours and forty five minutes which included the 30-minute stop for rain. Due to a “brain freeze” our leading group mucked up the novelties so we ended up with

The Golf Club Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Green Valley on the cards again and the course has improved greatly since a couple of months ago. The weather is also getting to be reasonable with a bit of rain cooling things down finally. Today it was the darksiders who took control of the podium save for one certain TGC captain creeping into third spot. Yep, Phil is in there again and seems to be returning to form. Smedley’s 33 pointer out there today got him to the third slot. Brian Carr defected to points beyond Sukhumvit three months back so unfortunately we don’t see him back in the bar too often. Brian had a solid 36 for second with a well-managed round of golf. Andy Makara is a long-standing Monday guy and knows this course well. He is no stranger to the podium and today shows the lads how to play this course, racking up 37 points in the process. Nice going, Andy, shame there’s no photo of you and Brian! Darren Stanton claimed the near pin and made the 15 footer for the birdie! Nice one, Daz! the green fee vouchers for 400 baht which were kindly donated by Anders Pedersen. It was a bit cooler than normal with rain clouds overhead as our first group teed off right on time at 10 am. The golf course was in good condition with the greens being somewhat slower than the north/ west course and we proceeded at a good pace although after four holes we did receive a light shower which only lasted for a few minutes and did not interrupt play. We completed the first nine, east, in two hours but had an interesting experience while on the south one tee. I was attempting to tee off but there was a Thai golfer standing a few feet away whilst talking loudly on his mobile phone. I politely asked him to either move away or lower his voice but he moved about three feet away and continued to talk loudly. I went over to him and asked him to desist and he proceeded to lecture me on the fact that this was “his” country and what were we doing there. I saw no point in continuing the “discussion” with this person so I and my playing partners teed off and moved off down the fairway to the sounds of this person shouting something in Thai after us. I asked my caddy who he was and she sheepishly said “big boss” which did not really surprise me as we have had more than one such incident at this course in the past but I guess “T.I.T.”. We continued our round without further incident and finished in a touch over four hours. We had four nearest the pins on the par threes and longest first putts on the last hole on each nine with one flight going down to four places. After a lean run of late it was Mick Coghlan who won the day with 41 points and Darren Boyle continued his good form by scoring 39 points to gain second spot. With a fine 73 off the stick it was Mike Allidi who finished third with 37 points and as there were two golfers on 35 points the resultant count back saw Peter Hynard (17 points on the back nine) finish in

four hours. Peter Thomas has been absent from the leaderboard for far too long so good to see Pete get in there with just 29 on the card. Kenny seemed absolutely astonished when he found out his 30 was getting him into the second spot up there. It must have been a tough time out there! Top of the pile we find Mr. Ian Brimble all alone with a 36 on the card that blows away the rest by a full six shots! Great round, Ian, see you back here sometime in October. Our Caddy Smile near pin today went to Stuart Evans, who had a great tee shot but could only walk off with a par. Not just for the value, but for the quality of the course as well. It was in great shape and all the guys reported how enjoyable the layout was. Actually, I can’t think of one “dumb” hole out here! Nick Faldo signed off on this layout although he never actually made it out here. When you win a Masters and an Open, the offers pour in! The course was in very good nick but

Dramatic skies over an even more dramatic golf course, Pattavia Century playing was as difficult as always with these greens. Their condition was fine but they remain some of the trickiest square metres of land in Chonburi province. That’s one of the things that keeps bringing us back here, it is a real test of your putting skills so when you find several three putt greens on the card, get over it. You will not be alone! Stuart Evans stole the show today and a 38 would be very hard to come by, so well played to him. Mark and I did battle (unknowingly) for two and three but ended in a tie as I somehow had pars on the last three holes, with even a near pin on that long 17th. OK, it was a sloppy shot, but guess what…I’ll take it! The Scotsman was solid as usual but had a few putts come up short. We had a good laugh and another great round on this lovely track.

You & Your Pets Small dogs in fashion but at risk

Cats for You in Pattaya

Researchers in Australia have found that in the last two or three decades people have become increasingly likely to purchase smaller, brachycephalic dogs-breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs that have a short muzzle, wide head, and prominent eyes. That trend is not confined to the land of Oz, for it seems more and more residents of Thailand also are opting for small, shortnosed breeds. You’ve no doubt seen the growing number of Thai girls walking down the street carrying their Shih Tzu dogs, farang men leading their Boston Terriers on leashes, and both Thais and farang of either sex accompanied by their Pekingese. So too in the UK and US, where Kennel Club registrations of similar breeds have doubled or trebled in the last decade. Popularity of smaller dogs is somewhat understandable in Pattaya where homes and apartments are smaller—certainly not large enough to accommodate the likes of German Sheppards or Golden Retrievers, some of the most popular varieties of the past. But there also may be a more subtle reason why we are seeing so many brachycephaly dogs: Their round head, prominent eyes, and small snout are infant-like and

Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Blackberry

Blackberry is the youngest kitten that we have here at the moment. She is very friendly, full of fun and her mum is KitKat, so we are hoping that someone will choose them as a pair. stimulate care-giving tendencies in women and men alike, Thais as well as foreigners. If you are considering adding such a pup to your family, it’s important that you know that brachycephalic dogs are at risk for several severe health problems. Given their unnatural head shape, the dogs have some potentially serious anatomic abnormalities, including: • narrowed nasal openings • a thin trachea (windpipe) • a long soft palate • outpouchings of tissue into the larynx (voice box) These characteristics can combine to make breathing difficult for these breeds.

Typical symptoms include noisy breathing, working harder than normal to breathe, an inability to exercise normally, gagging and—particularly problematic in Thailand--a tendency to overheat. In severe cases, dogs may collapse due to low blood oxygen levels. Also, small brachycephalic dogs often cannot give birth naturally; their pups have to be delivered by C-section. Those and other difficulties contribute to an average life expectancy four years shorter than that of non-brachycephalic dogs—8.6 years compared with 12.7 years. Up to you, of course. Just be aware of the potential risks.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well-being. Getting a pet to take medication is one of the great challenges in veterinary medicine, and difficulty in pilling is a leading cause of non-compliance. So is crushing pills into the pet’s food the answer? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Some medications are designed to be absorbed further down in the GI tract. But even if you can crush a pill without affecting its potency, you may not be able to get your pet to eat it. (Have you ever chewed an aspirin? Fido or Miss Kitty might have a similar reaction.) With bitter medicines, most pets realize what’s going on after a few bites and then refuse to eat the rest of the food, leaving owners to wonder what percentage of the dose the pet actually got. With a compliant pet, you maybe be able to toss the pill into the back of its mouth and then hold her snout shut until she swallows. If your pet resists that

KitKat

KitKat is one of the most friendly cats that we have ever had. She came to us pregnant and, a few days later, had 3 lovely kittens. They are all grown up and only one is left for adoption. So now it is her turn to find a new home.

Bella and Jacko

This lovely pair have been with us for a while now, Both are friendly and although they are not brother and sister they are soul mates, so we thought it would be great to re-home them together if possible.

Pepe & Ginger Nutz

This handsome pair of ginger boys are both quite shy when they first meet you as they don't get many visitors. But if you stay quietly with them for a while, they will soon befriend you big-time..

Cat Corner Tip technique, you can try to hide the pill whole in a treat or in a morsel of food. For pets that don’t like treats, you can look for a pill gun (good luck with that in Pattaya) or ask your veterinarian for instruction on pilling techniques.

Going to the Dogs...

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.

~Edward Hoagland

Cats are not fond of anyone touching their precious pearly whites, and your cat’s reluctance to open wide may have convinced you that dentalheath treats are enough to protect Miss Kitty’s smile. But plaque buildup eventually turns to tartar, which can lead to pain and even tooth loss down the road. Brushing your cat’s teeth daily, or at least a few times each week, is the best way keep Kitty’s gums and teeth healthy and reduce the frequency of expensive, professional dental cleanings.
