Pattaya’S Cashless Future

I

n a determined attempt to push Thailand towards a society in which hard currency plays little or no physical part, the government has approved the banks’ investment in card acceptance through electronic data capture (EDC). There are currently about 300,000 EDC units in the country, but they only work with chipbased debit and ATM cards.

After the shift to microchips from magnetic stripes – all new cards issued from May 15 carry the new technology – the number of EDC machines is expected to grow quickly to two million.

Part of the rationale for the changes derives from cost as printing and replacing banknotes is an expensive enterprise. Fund transfers via mobile banking currently cost 10 baht per transaction – 75 million baht in a full year – but will be lower under the new structure. The e-payment programme envisages that people will be able to use their mobile phone numbers or ID or passport numbers to make payments to merchants from October 2016. Commercial

banks will be in charge of registration which customers can do via ATMs, internet banking, mobile banking or by visiting bank branches.

Supporters of the plan also stress that electronic payments make it easier to trace tax evasion, money laundering and other crimes as transactions are observable.

To encourage cashless banking, commercial banks are expected to reduce the number of ATMs nationwide in order to encourage customers to pay for merchandise or services electronically. At present there are 70,000 ATMs in Thailand with a reduction to 30,000 envisaged during the next two years. A spokesman for Thai bankers said, “Card acceptance must be in place in every province. Moreover, the government should motivate the use of debit cards and EDC registration by offering incentives to both individuals and small- or medium-sized businesses. ATMs dispensing cash will eventually be replaced.”

But experts agree that cash-based transactions will

have a longer life in tourist spots such as Pattaya. This is because most foreign tourists are likely to fight shy of the registration system and the unknown charges of paying in a foreign currency.

“Pattaya in particular has a long way to go because so many small transactions are done by short-stay visitors,” said a local banker. “There is also a lot of mistrust of card transactions for bigger transactions such as the purchase of a new car or a property. It is still almost universal to require customers to bring huge wads of cash for such purchases. There is still a lot of suspicion about largescale cashless transactions.”

In any case, there remain substantial doubts whether Thailand is ready for the national e-payment master plan. The biggest concern revolves around the lack of sufficient security measures to protect account holders from the unauthorized use of accounts and to prevent system errors, fraud and growing cyber-threats such as hacking, phishing and denial of service attacks. A national e-payment system will require the creation of a central repository of the personal data of the vast majority of the population.

News Motorbike gang broken up Gold necklaces targeted

Banglamung police have arrested six youths, aged 15-17, on suspicion that they have been involved in motorbike thefts including spare parts. Apparently, there have been numerous complaints that motorbikes disappeared overnight from the car parks of apartments

and condominiums. The boys cannot be named for legal reasons but are thought to have been responsible for at least 15 thefts. The motorbikes are now at Banglamung police station and owners can reclaim their property provided they have the required documentation.

Another gambling arrest

Chinese tourist Guowei Shi, 52, complained to police that she had been assaulted and robbed of a necklace worth 100,000 baht in front of a restaurant on Pattaya Third Road. She stated she was a member of a tour group when someone on a motorbike suddenly appeared and snatched her jewelry. Police said they would inspect the CCTV footage, assuming there is any, to try to ascertain if any relevant information is forthcoming.

Police from Pattaya headquarters raided an apartment on Soi 9, Central Pattaya, and found seven gamblers of both sexes indulging in a game of cards. The owner-occupier of the room, Sucahrt Sarape, 42, confessed that his friends played cards there as they were night workers who became bored in the day.

Several packs of cards and the sum of 40 baht were taken away as evidence, whilst the gamblers were fined a nominal sum. The activities in the room had been heard by a neighbour who called the police as she was annoyed by the loud noises.

Wife severs penis in rage

A Thai man screamed in agony when his wife severed his private parts with a knife after becoming convinced he was having an affair. Sawangboriboon volunteers arrived at the house in Naklua to find him in great agony and holding a bag of ice close to the large wound. They rushed him to Banglamung Hospital but doctors said it was too early to state whether or not his manhood could be reattached in working order. Throughout the rescue operation, the wife kept staring vacantly at her spouse; she was taken for questioning by investigators.

Fire strikes Pattaya Discovery Beach Hotel

The Chic Tower of Pattaya Discovery Beach Hotel caught fire sparked in the power control room. The flames spread to air-conditioning pipes before the overhead water sprinklers were set off and the Pattaya Fire Department arrived to control the flames. Napaht Thitirotnawat, hotel director, said that there was not much damage.

A Chinese national identified as Mu Han, aged 20, died in the Adriatic Palace Hotel swimming pool at a time when management had closed off the area for the night and the pool was in darkness. The wife said that she and her husband were on honeymoon in Pattaya and did not realize the pool was closed at the time. Staff said they rushed to the area after hearing a woman scream. The body was taken for autopsy and the Chinese embassy informed.

Police rushed to the area of Big C Extra in Central Pattaya after a motorbike driver crashed into a bus as the larger vehicle was attempting a u-turn. The motorbike rider Penipa Kuiapai, 21, was badly injured and rushed to the Memorial Hospital.

Several bus passengers were also slightly injured. Observers said the bus was turning with a green traffic light when the motorbike suddenly appeared.

Brit drugs, robs Italian man

Italian Luca Viggiani was drugged and robbed of valuables worth 700,000 baht, according to Pol. Lt. Col. Somkid Sitthisart.

The assailant was identified as British citizen Irfan Asaf.

Earlier, Luca reportedly lost his investment of 2 million baht, which Irfan claimed he could recover by paying police 600,000 baht. The 44-year-old Italian agreed and, en route to the police station with the money, he was drugged by the Brit.

While unconscious, Luca was robbed of the money as well as his 100,000-baht Rolex watch.

Four-car crash in North Pattaya

A four-car pileup in North Pattaya, near the Roong Reuang bus station, resulted in one death and one injury, according to Pol. Captain Niwat Pengkhaen. The Sawangboriboon volunteers attended to the injured person. The dead man, 26-year old Arthit Sukhon, reportedly was thrown from his car when he lost control while driving at high speeds.

News Brit arrested for practicing law illegally

ASEAN science conference at Ambassador City

The 16th ASEAN Conference of Clinical Laboratory Sciences in conjunction with the 40th Annual Scientific Meeting of Association of Medical Technologists of Thailand (AMTT) at the Ambassador City Hotel Pattaya focused on health and well-being in 21st century.

The biennial conference seeks to foster

medical laboratory sciences in the ASEAN region, promote cooperation in scientific exchange among the ASEAN countries, establish a closer professional and personal rapport amongst members, and help establish and formulate policies for attaining the highest possible level of the practice.

The Orient Express Free Concert Kevin Harper, a 66-year-old Britain, has been arrested for illegally practicing law in Pattaya. Police apprehended the suspect in his office at the British Law Co., Ltd., while Harper was counseling a foreign client.

In addition to being charged with working in a restricted profession that prohibits aliens, Harper was cited for operating an unregistered law office and for misleading the public. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to a term in prison.

Evidence centered around a YouTube video in which the accused promoted his legal skills and services to the public, it was revealed at a meeting at the Magna Carta Law

Office in South Pattaya with Magna Carta CEO Chalmermwat Wimuktayon, who also is chairman of the Pattaya Lawyers Association, cooperating with various government officials.

When the suspect was interrogated, he acknowledged that he was, indeed, the person in the promotional video.

Police searched Harper’s Third Road offices and collected a number of documents and bank accounts. Leading the search were Chakorn Kanjanawatta, chief of Banglamung District Office, Major Somkiat Sumkrang of Nawamindhachini Army base in Banglamung, Army Pol. Lt. Rattapong Tiasud, and secretary of the Lawyers Council Pattaya, Puntawat Pimsakun.

US officials visit Sattahip Tourism plan unfolded US Senate officials, led by Robert Porter, made a courtesy call to the Sattahip naval base and Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Chatchawan Meesawat. The purpose was to strengthen ties between

the two countries and to enhance understanding about the navies of the respective countries. It is now US policy to pivot to Southeast Asia because of the importance of the area in the 21st century world.

Santana Mekavarakul celebrates 80 years Surat Mekavarakul, managing director of Mike Group, led family members in celebrating his mothers 80thbirthday. The event for Santana Mekavarakul, chairperson of Mike Group, was held at Mike Shopping Mall.

In attendance were government officials, business leaders, members of Thai Red Cross Banglamung, women development groups and distinguished guests who donated 200,000 baht for the Thai Red Cross Banglamung and Chonburi Hospital.

The Tourism Association of Thailand organized a seminar at the Hilton Hotel in Pattaya to plan a development paper for the next five years. There was much attention paid to measuring tourism quality and improving the image of the country in the eyes of the world.

News Disease control highlighted

The Surveillance and Rapid Response Health Team held their fifth annual party in the presence of Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome. The group, with nearly 200 members, prepares and distributes

monthly reports about health issues, including epidemics, which afflict local communities. It also offers advice on healthy living and the avoidance of common infections.

‘Clean Food Good Taste’

The city’s tourism and sports committee, in the presence of senior health officers, visited The Harbour Mall in Central Pattaya and awarded good marks to 90 percent of the 59 restaurants and food outlets checked.

Buppha Songsakulchai, from the health department, said he was impressed by the quality of service and the health safety approach of most of the businesses in the mall.

ATM cards change Some 60 million magnetic-stripe ATM and debit cards issued by Thai banks and circulating in the market are being upgraded to chipembedded cards, a process already underway and lasting until 2019 as cards expire. However, the vast majority of cards are already embedded, but the withdrawal machines will still support the magnetic stripe variety for another three years provided they are not lost or expire. Thailand is actually the third country in the ASEAN region to have mandatory chipembedment after Malaysia and Singapore. It is argued that the new type will be less open to skimming and other types of fraud.

But a further reason for the change, according to bankers, is the slow migration from a cash-based society under the central bank’s e-payment policy. Facilitating the move to a cashless era would help reduce operating costs when managing cash. Actually the number of banknotes printed by the Bank of Thailand fell to 2 billion last year from around 3 billion in 2014. This move illustrates how the cashless society is beginning slowly to take root. Even though the banks have spent a great deal of money updating their machines to chip-embedded, they say that current fee rates will remain unchanged. Most Thai banks have around 10 million ATM and debit cards in circulation.

The robots are coming Automation, which can mean fewer errors and higher quality in producing goods and services, is a great thing. But the downside is that the process can reduce labour. Technology has already done away with many jobs as instanced by robots operating trucks in some mines and corporate litigation software which can replace workers who used to sift and categorize thousands of documents. Big banks have slashed thousands of jobs in recent years as businesses such as bond trading have become less profitable. Under pressure to boost profits, banks are increasingly turning to technology to help them shed labour costs.

And there are lots more to come. There is currently the prospect of driverless cars to name but one example, the consequences of which are still being debated for those who currently earn their living sitting behind a wheel. One of the biggest causes of the stagnation of middle class wages, a bone of contention in the UK and the US in particular, is essentially because of clever computer programs. However, the optimists say that the real revolution in computers and jobs is some decades away.

In the meantime, computer savvy individuals can boost their income by operating freelance sites or by teaching novices on the internet. In order words, don’t villainise technology too soon as it also creates a whole load of opportunities out there.

North Korean paradox It’s something of a paradox that, whilst North Korea has at last moved against smoking by discouraging it in advertisements and restricting it in the workplace, dictator Kim Jong-un is still seen in state media puffing away merrily. Mind you, he has probably found out the secret of how to avoid catching lung cancer but will keep the information to himself so as not to influence public opinion. Nothing is impossible for the Kim family.

After all, the current dictator’s father allegedly once sacked his spokesman for claiming that Kim Jong-il had three holes in one on his very first trip to a golf club. The number of holes in one was actually eight. But no visual record of this particular triumph has survived.

World Environment Day

Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wuttisak Leamkitjakarn led locals and students in releasing more than 51,000 sea creature into the waters off Jomtien Beach to celebrate World Environment Day. The animals

were donated by Rayong Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Center to help increase marine life population. Participants also cleaned the beach and collected garbage.

Ageing Thailand Thai families are increasingly having to bear the costs of caring for elderly relatives who can no longer look after themselves as the Thai population ages faster than any other ASEAN country. The country’s working-age population is expected to shrink by 11 percent over the next 20 years. The rising cost of care is an additional burden to households struggling with record levels of debt that is a drag on consumption and is stunting the economy. A culture of filial piety, in which families feel obliged to care for the elderly, means more often than not absorbing the expense of looking after parents and grandparents. A poor savings culture has left many people ill-prepared to help themselves financially in old age.

The only bright spot is that the cost of looking after a relative with, say, dementia and diabetes is a lot lower in rural areas than in urban sprawls such as Bangkok or Pattaya.

The British embassy does not now publish a local Pattaya contact number and you have to contact officials at the main Bangkok number 02 305 8333... So far as we know, Pattaya does not have an authorized translation service from Swedish to English or to Thai and the local Swedish consulate refers enquirers to Bangkok... Neither embassies nor the Thai authorities publish a record of the total of farang deaths in Pattaya (or any other city) but it’s much higher than the cases mentioned in the local press as most foreigners die an unpublicized death in hospital... Increasingly, embassies in Bangkok do not provide a walk-in service and you have to book an appointment online well in advance.

Other concerns are that many low-income people have little understanding of sophisticated e-payment systems which would make them susceptible to cyberthreats.

Critics also say that the infrastructure is not yet in place to provide a fully stable internet connection countrywide, which may hinder its use in rural or outlying areas. In other words,

there needs to be a massive public education campaign boosted by security measures, proper data management and equal broadband access. Some observers say that e-payments should be a priority in remote areas as there is often a lack of physical banks even to perform traditional functions. At the moment, there is no clarity on whether account holders or financial institutions will bear the risks associated with fraudulent transactions or identity theft of a credit card.

The cashless society requires a huge investment to develop security measures, to install complex software and to train both traditional bank staff and potential users. If the regulations are not sufficiently well thought out, people may end up not using the system at all for fear of security flaws and invasion of privacy by the government. Consequently, there is no threat to the livelihood of the 200 or so money changers and exchange bureaux in the greater Pattaya area. Not yet anyway.

New Police Chief visits District Officer Pol. Col. Apichai Krobpetch, new commander of Pattaya Police Station, together with Pol. Lt. Col. Vasuwat Chotichuang visited Chakorn Kanchanawatta, Banglamung district office to introduce themselves.

Among his goals, said Apichai, is to improve current rules and regulations, minimize traffic problems and suppress crime.

Fix IT centre opens A-One Pattaya at Baan Kru

Tara Pattana International School Summer Fete Sattahip Technology College and municipality officers have come up with a new plan to ensure that students fulfill an important community role. They will repair motorbikes and replace old parts for free while they gain expertise which could be useful in their adult life. So far the college reports the students are busy from morning until dusk. It is not known how long the centre, based in the college, will remain open.

Ladyboy steals necklace from Dane

Two katoey stole a 40,000-baht necklace from a Danish tourist on Naklua Road. The victim, 52-year-old Tommy Walther Larsson, said he was walking past the Lodge Hotel when approached by two ladyboys. While hugging Larsson, the assailants snatched his necklace and fled, according to Pol. Capt.

ISOC Chonburi reclaims land

Col. Thatsanai Prathumthong, associate director of Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), Chonburi, led the confiscation of land in a mangrove forest project in Nong Mai Daeng and Ban Suan. The National Council for Peace and Order

assigned ISOC and the Ministry of Natural Resources to handle the case of forest invaders accused of causing the deterioration of the forest and its resources. Guidelines have been designed on protecting further destruction in the next 10 years.

News Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand Reign at 2016 Laguna Phuket Marathon Koji Nishizawa from Japan won the 2016 Laguna Phuket, besting defending champ Mario Maglinao from the Philippines in the men’s 42 km marathon, finishing in 02:37:53h while the Philippines’ Lany Cardona won the women’s division in 03:23:00h.

Neil Pearson from the United Kingdom finished second in the men’s marathon in 02:47:16h followed

by Mario Maglinao coming in at 02:49:54h, breaking his 2:55:35h record from 2015. In the women’s marathon, Thailand’s Wilaiwan Kumpituk came in at 03:24:33h and Xiomara Templeton, from the USA, placed third in 03:31:10h.

The Philippines dominated the 21 km half marathon races, taking four of the top six spots. The winner of the half marathon men’s race was Richard Salano from the Philippines, who finished in 01:15:18h, followed

by Australia’s Chris Truscott in 01:16:56h and Gregg Vincent Osorio from the Philippines in 01:19:05h. In the women’s half marathon race Singapore’s Vivian Tang led the pack in 01:27:11h while defending women’s half marathon champ Christabel Martes from the Philippines followed in 01:28:13h and Jho-An Banayag, also from the Philippines, placed third in 01:29:17h.

Thai runners ruled the 10.5 km half marathon that took place in the late afternoon of June 4 with Phuket son Rattakarn Lamanee winning the 10.5 km male race in 00:37:56h and Wilaiwam Kumpituk winning the women’s race, finishing in 00:41:49h.

Also participating in the 10.5km run was Babu Seenappa, running wunderkind and youth advocate for children living with HIV/AIDS. Babu finished the 10.5 km run in 00:51:55h.

Overall the 2016 Laguna Phuket Marathon attracted over 6,000 participants from 54 countries, making this year the first time the event has broken the 6,000 entry mark, as well as setting new records for entries in each race distance.

This year was also the first time that the races took place over a course of two days, solidifying the event as

Asia’s largest destination marathon.

The 2 km Kids’s Run, 5 km Run and Walk, and 10.5 km Run saw runners running into the sunset on Saturday June 4, while the half marathon and marathon runners had an early start at 4:30 am and 5:30 am, respectively, on Sunday morning, running into the sunrise.

The Laguna Phuket Marathon is a fun, family-oriented marathon that focuses on athlete experience and offering everyone from 0-99 years old a chance to participate in the races.

Marking World No-Tobacco Day 2016 Dusit Thani Pattaya GM Chatchawal Supachayanont led the City of Pattaya, hotel staff and management, Sunday Bike Club, friends and associates including Thai Airways International Pattaya Office in marking World NoTobacco Day held on the resort grounds. The event started with the Pao Bun Jin show that illustrated the bad effects that smoking can do to one’s health. The hotel’s DFiT

fitness team also performed an aerobic dance after which Chatchawal handed out certificates of commendation to the staff who have quit smoking. Cycling for Health followed which covered 28 kilometers starting from Beach Road to Jomtien district to raise awareness on the importance of physical exercise and workout while saying no to tobacco consumption.

Snap Judgment Perils of Booze It is, of course, possible to exaggerate the importance of alcohol when discussing road accidents or violent crime. Many road accidents are caused by poor driving, whether caused by ignorance or intent, with everyone involved being perfectly sober. Also relevant are cars, motorbikes and lorries being driven whilst in poor condition with, for example, worn tires or literally-exhausted engines or brakes. Refusal to observe safety precautions, including not wearing a seat belt or a helmet, must also be brought into the equation. Here, in Pattaya, there are far more helmet-less motorbike drivers to be seen in the mornings than in the afternoons. This is because of the perceived reality that the police are not active at breakfast time.

All that said, alcohol is still the culprit in too many cases involving injury and death. When a gang of toughs viciously attacked three British tourists in Hua Hin a couple of months ago, drink was blamed on the fact that extreme violence was used on a very flimsy excuse.

The same claim was apparently made by a group of louts who beat to death a man delivering bread and by a tourist who killed a transvestite simply because she had suggested an intimacy which was not to his liking.

Drink is also the excuse in road accidents, although in these cases there may be independent proof such as the results of a breath test or a doctor’s report. But even here, there are pressures to falsify or distort the findings. Recently a 23-year old farang was killed in a motorbike accident when he was driving too fast in the wrong direction on a one way street. The immediate post-mortem examination showed that he had consumed at least 15 bottles of beer before mounting his motorbike, which was far more powerful than any similar machine offered for rent in his European home. Yet the report issued to the insurance company made no mention of alcohol abuse. Why? Presumably because a true finding would have invalidated the policy to cover cremation costs and the cost of a new bike. Hopefully, this kind of malpractice is extremely rare, though it does indicate the sort of pressure a doctor may have to resist.

In other words, booze is still seen by the authorities and many members of the public as an unfortunate and chance contributor to human misery. In the Songkran attack in Hua Hin, four men in their 20s punched and kicked unconscious a British couple in their late 60s as well as their 43-year old son. The police said that the son accidentally bumped into one of the men, leading to an argument. In another incident, a group of six youths allegedly beat up and stabbed to death a handicapped man who had the gall to answer back when taunted by the gang because of his disability. These cases were admittedly extreme examples, but there must be thousands of minor incidents of a similar ilk happening annually throughout the country.

We all know the effects of alcohol which include diminished judgment, a false sense of well-being or even invincibility, a lowering of inhibitions. Amongst a group of drinkers, with peer group pressures playing a large part, including the “one for the road” theme, the influence of drink becomes ever stronger with the result that people are goaded into behavior that they would otherwise shun. Thus, rapists commonly claim that their unwelcome attentions were the consequence of having had one-too-many. Whether judges in court take such defences into consideration is a matter for speculation. One sincerely hopes that they do not.

In Thailand, there has been some restriction on the advertizing of alcohol and, where it is allowed, there are often warnings about the dangers of consuming too much liquor. Brewers prefer this sort of self-censorship rather than being forced to comply with a wide-ranging law. But such warnings are routinely ignored as everybody knows. Add to this the fact that Thailand has just about the highest consumption rate of alcohol in the ASEAN region. On average, Thais drink 7 litres of pure alcohol a year which is the equivalent of 226 bottles of beer or 25 bottles of spirits. Some commentators suggest that these figures from the Centre for Alcohol Studies in Thailand actually understate the real position.

The response of the government has always been, and still is, to pile on all the rules and regulations on the hours and places booze can be sold, on the minimum age limit and on the alcohol content listed on every bottle sold. The current government revived an old martiallaw era decision to restrict the sale of booze to a few hours in the afternoon and in the evening. Also, it is technically illegal to purchase a drink between the hours of 2 and 5 pm although it is OK to consume provided the purchase was made before 2 pm. Yet all these rules and regulations can hardly succeed if people continue to believe that being drunk is a fair excuse for all manner of deviant behavior.

When people want to break the law or behave badly, the main hesitation is likely to be whether they will be caught or suffer unwelcome consequences any time soon. Everybody accepts that the police operating roadblocks and using breath tests are a disincentive to drinking and driving. But that is hardly enough. There has to be a sea change in the way people perceive alcohol abuse. When the blood begins to boil, impaired judgment can lead to the most awful consequences.

Where’s our bridge?

There was a time, not too long in the distant past, when crossing from one side of Sukhumvit Road to the other was not a life-threatening task.

A few short years ago the road was just four lanes wide, two going in each direction, with a wide grass verge running down the middle. Cars were fewer in number, and crossing the road, even for a person with a disability, was easy to do.

But as Pattaya increased in size, and the number of cars on the road has almost doubled in recent years, Sukhumvit was widened to become eight lanes. A new overpass was built and a road tunnel is currently under construction, which has meant that getting from one side to the other is today almost impossible.

Near the junction of Pattaya Klang, outside School No. 5, there is a pedestrian bridge which is used by hundreds, if not thousands each day, but if you have a disability, use a wheelchair or are missing a lower limb, how do you get to the other side?

Not too long ago representatives from the Ministry of Transport visited Pattaya, and in particular they visited the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities. With much fanfare in front of the local and national press it was announced, and promised, that an accessible bridge would be constructed outside the Father Ray Foundation.

themselves, or walk, across a bridge and then back into a lift to take them down.

Since the announcement the students at the school have heard nothing; no start date, no designs, no plans, not even an apology for a delay in the work starting.

So to remind the people at the Ministry of Transport of their promise, the students recently held a demonstration on Sukhumvit Road, and in front of the local and national media.

Wheelchair users showed how difficult it is to climb the stairs on Sukhumvit Road’s only foot bridge in the city centre. Not just going up, but also coming down the other side.

Most people can barely maneuver the pavements

A new army of fans Anyone who spends any amount of time here in Thailand will soon realise that Thais are obsessed with football, or soccer to our American friends.

Pattaya is home to several football clubs, both Thai and foreign, with the most well known being Pattaya United, currently languishing in the lower half of the Thai Premier League.

Pattaya City F.C., who presently play in Division two, may not be as popular as their Premier League city mates, but the team, formerly known as Sriracha FC, has recently gained several hundred new fans, most of them from the Father Ray Foundation.

Owner of Pattaya City FC, Poonpol Kamuttira, recently

visited the Foundation to pledge his support by offering all revenue from the sale of tickets at the club’s home games, which are currently being played at Nongprue two Stadium, just off Siam Country Road.

Following the announcement, and at the team’s next home game, several vehicles arrived at the stadium from the Father Ray Children’s Home, Special Needs Center, Vocational School for People with Disabilities and the School for the Blind all full of Pattaya City FC’s new fans.

The students from the School for the Blind were selected to be the local team’s match mascots, which may be a first in the world of football, and then they sat in

the grandstand as their teacher giving a commentary as they game was played.

But the local fans were out numbered by the visiting supporters who had traveled for many hours along the coast to Pattaya. They cheered, booed, banged drums, waved flags, shouted abuse at the referee and were as devoted as any supporter of an English Premier or La Liga team.

The local team may have been playing on their home ground, but the team from Trat was just too good and they won the match two goals to one.

Nongprue two Stadium may not be as big as Wembley in London, San Siro in Milan or Madrid’s Bernabeu, but what it lacks in size it makes up in enthusiasm and passion.

It wasn’t too long ago that most people living with a disability would be expected to stay at home, not go to school, to college or to university. It

was expected that they would not do much with their lives, becoming reliant and a burden on family members.

But today things have changed. People with a disability want to be educated, they want to be independent, they want to be equal and

they want to be able to cross Sukhumvit Road in safety.

We can only hope the current Minister of Transport was watching the news channels when this story was aired.

International Day of Yoga Pattaya 2016

In 2014 at a meeting of the United National General Assembly, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, suggested the date of June 21 to be known as International Day of Yoga.

Six months later, a record 175 member states adopted the proposal and the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June the 21 2015. This inaugural event saw people in more than one hundred nations taking part, with more than thirty five

thousand people in New Delhi participating in what became the largest ever yoga class.

This year, 2016, International Day of Yoga will be celebrated here in Pattaya, on the afternoon of Tuesday June 21 at the sunken plaza at Central Festival Pattaya Beach.

The event starts from 4:30 pm, and includes an opening ceremony with VIP guests, a performance of Fly Yoga and a community yoga class which it is hoped that several hundred yoga enthusiasts will attend.

This is an event not only

for yoga devotees, but one for the whole community, Thai and foreign, young and old, male and female, rich and poor.

It is free for everyone, though a donation is requested, and optional, and which will be donated to the Father Ray Foundation, Pattaya’s largest charitable organization.

This will be the second International Day of Yoga, and an oppor tunity for everyone here in Pattaya to join together to celebrate this ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice.

Hilton Pattaya has taken part in Careers@Hilton Live: Youth in Hospitality Month, Hilton Worldwide’s annual global career event showcasing the many opportunities available in the hospitality industry for young people. Last month, Hilton Worldwide hotels and corporate offices around the globe hosted hundreds of events to inform those looking for employment about the exciting and diverse career opportunities in the hospitality industry. They also visited the Engineering department for a short tour.

CV and also allowed students to practice their answers to the questions they’re most likely to be asked in a job interview.

Pullman Pattaya Hotel G Visits Teacher Boonchoo Home for Special Children

Pullman Pattaya Hotel G led by GM Sophon Vongchatchainont paid a visit to the Teacher Boonchoo Home for Special Children.

The visit aimed not only to host lunch for gifted children but to look for a location to build a shower room for the new activity center. While the kitchen team was preparing lunch for all kids and caretakers, the G Club and their entertaining team created a fun activity to familiarize and to give laughter to the children.

Founded in 2009 by Boonchoo and the gifted children’s parents, Teacher Boonchoo Home for Special Children foundation has now been accommodating 160 gifted children ranged from 4 to 47 years old. The center has expanded in the past years with the support by private sectors.

Secluded a few kilometers away from the foundation, a new center will help support a proper space for gifted children’s activities.

For a hot soup option both mushroom and a Thai sour soup with crispy fish and cowslip creepers were on offer. Fresh, vibrant salads abound with a popular DIY Caesar area, and many other choices such as spicy grilled salads, an exciting nam prik with all the necessary accoutrements plus a well-stocked charcuterie and smoked fish table with a myriad of cold options to start your taste buds zinging. It was from here that Mick and I launched into our gleeful eating, starting with those succulent oysters.

The sushi/sashimi table is always a popular spot at any buffet and here was no exception. Premium quality raw fish and seaweed wrapped delicacies always disappear at a rapid rate. Sashimi is a direct taste experience with the fish needing to be of the highest quality as there is no hiding behind sauces and other distractions other than a good soy sauce and wasabi. It was all absolutely delicious and top-notch.

The chaffing dishes then beckoned. Here on a gentle heat awaited spicy salmon with green pea sauce, beef cheek massaman, roast pork, snow fish with saffron sauce, red curry with crab meat, shrimp balls and spinach ravioli. Across the restaurant roasted leg of lamb was being carved to order and served with a selection of roasted vegetables. Plus unlimited offer of rich foie gras, pan-seared and served on toast with a sweet and tangy fruit reduction.

Outside on the terrace the BBQ chef was poised at his station ready to throw another prawn, fish, squid or rock lobster onto the heat, grill a banana wrapped fish or let you select

your preferred marinated squid. The smell was wonderful and the air heavy with smoking seafood and intense aromas. Another live station nearby was offering a whole gamut of “cooked to order” items, deep-fried crab meat with minced pork served in the shell, steamed snapper, fried pork and garlic or sea bass with black bean sauce. Just give the chef your table number clip and it will be served to you fresh from the pan.

We could not leave without tasting the splendid array of imported cheeses from Italy, France and Spain (Pecorino Romano, Parmesan, Blue and Manchego).

Crunchy baguettes or garlic toast were both there to complement the cheeses plus pickles and dried fruits.

Closing with a decadent dessert is a must here. The house patisserie produces the most beautiful creative pastries and desserts, opera cake, mango mousse, crème brulee, tiramisu to name just a few sparkle and glint with sweetness while the home-made ice cream flavoured with coconut, or strawberry would make for a wicked companion to the above or a refreshing solo dessert to close your InterContinental buffet feast.

NEWS STEAKS & GRILL We had been receiving so many recommendations for News Steaks & Grill that a visit was definitely needed. Under new ownership for over a year, the new patron, Jack Grindvold, has succeeded in gaining an enviable position in Jomtien’s dining scene. With a newly crafted menu created by Master Chef Jens Johansson, it now fairly sparkles with international cuisine of culinary exactitude interspersed with many Swedish favourites.

The lunch specials (12.00 till 6.00 pm) offer an impressive pageant of daily changing platters for only B.199. For instance, on Mondays that 60’s party favourite, Swedish

meatballs has been reinvented and comes served with mashed potato, Lingon berries and pickled cucumber; on Friday beef and pepper sauce is served over pasta, while Tuesday breaded crisp dory comes with boiled potatoes and the house dill mayonnaise. Thursday is a fishy traditional Swedish pattie called Wallenberg from the Sea which leaves Wednesday offering grilled chicken fillet with a sardell (anchovy) and lemon butter served with fries.

Mick and I visited for dinner recently and while perusing the menu ordered a cool glass of Prosecco (B.220) for company. The

tapas plate (B.345 for two) looked interesting with its twist of Swedish flair but another had caught my eye and I plumped for beetroot tartare (B.110) while Mick opted for the toast Skagen (think Swedish prawn cocktail). The earthy beets had been pulsed with seasonings and came accompanied by Feta cheese and an unusual crunchy rye bacon bread. I loved it. Mick meanwhile was enjoying his shrimps liberally combined with home made dill mayo with onion, capers and gerkins and also served with that rye bacon crunch. Other starters include prawns fried with garlic and chilli, a New Zealand beef tartare and

beef packed nachos with jalapenos, tomatoes, onion cheese, salsa and sour cream.

This menu is a meat lovers dream.

From grilled pork chops to Australian lamb loin, burgers, ribs and kebabs and of course the News premium steaks it’s a carnivore’s carnival.

Texas hot spareribs (B.485) come BBQ glazed, the signature burger is 200 grs of pure 100 percent beef with all the accoutrements, bacon, cheese, French fries, etc., while the sizzling fajitas can be served with a choice of chicken or beef. I followed the Swedish tradition with a grilled salmon fillet. Perfectly cooked with a translucent centre, it was a star dish accompanied by a top notch white wine sauce and the best mash I have tasted for a long time: Skagen mash – the creaminess of the potatoes had been combined with the sweet prawn and mayo to produce the ultimate in adult comfort food.

Pork fillet Oscar with shrimp and asparagus and Béarnaise sauce was our other selection and again chef had cooked it faultlessly. There is truly a sauce master in this kitchen; every creamy, velvety emulsion that was served was superb indeed.

Mick and I were drinking the very acceptable Italian house wine at B.110 by the glass. However, there is an interesting list of global wines, liquers, shots, aperitifs and cocktails

including some frozen specialities and of course, Akvavit is close to hand for the discerning.

What about the eponymous steaks? I hear you ask. Well, the News signature steaks are imported premium New Zealand and Australian 150 days grain fed and are the most ordered items on the menu. From only B.745 for a 250 g New York sirloin to the house tournedos a la News with duck liver sauce and pickled red onions to the 450 g of succulent T-bone, they are all one of the reasons these tables are so sought after.

Daily changing evening specials keep the regulars happy and on the night we visited it was Chateaubriand with French fries, vegetables and a trio of luscious sauces, B.1,090 for two or New Zealand beef fillet with mushroom sauce and potato skins for B.595. There are also over a dozen Thai favourites from Tom Yam soup to Penang curry and fried noodles.

Desserts are equally creative showcasing chocolate cake with lemon curd, caramelised popcorn and whipped cream or crème brulee Catalana with fruit (B.125) or the house News tiramisu. We were feeling pleasantly fed and watered but did manage to finish with a portion of chocolate truffles with berries for a sweet ending to our dining out experience News style.

Very gruesome Russia The Romanov dynasty lasted for just over 300 years and produced some of history's most awful rulers since Caligula and Nero. The czarina Anna liked to watch armed fights between dwarves and handicapped persons - to the death. Peter the Great was obsessed by decapitation as a biological experiment and even had his own son tortured to death because of opposition to dad's reforms. Simon Sebag Montefiore (The Romanovs 1613-1918) takes us through hundreds of examples of cruelty and slaughter leading up to the Bolshevik revolution and the end of the dynasty during the later stages of the First World War. The first Romanov czar was Mikhail who picked his czarina at a bride circus-show and a party marked by the poisoning of all his possible rivals for power. He was succeeded by Alexei, a young monk who woke at 4 a.m. and spent the next six hours standing up in meditation or prostrating himself one thousand times. He tried to ban drinking, smoking, dwarf dancing and buggery with boys - but all to no avail and he was butchered like so many other Romanov rulers. Before he was killed, Alexei unleashed an orgy of violence against Jews and the many atrocities included the eating of Jewish children in front of their mothers' eyes.

Peter the Great was fond of watching tortures and even played chess with real persons who were killed when the opponent made a superior move which led to capture. He once hanged 200 prisoners together and left their bodies to rot on the gallows for a six month period in order to dissuade anyone from even thinking

Alas, in this book, we are too busy being spellbound by screams of murder to dare to ask these questions.

The story ends, of course, with the ill-fated Nicholas the Second, a man with a childlike view of the world who would see his own children lined up for execution along with him and his German-born wife. He believed that his powers were given by God and could not be watered down by politics.

Putin is every bit as autocratic and ruthless as the fallen Romanovs but has learned, in our world of social media and instant, TV to portray a less sinister public persona to the millions of voters throughout his huge empire. The Russians Are Coming...Back!

During the Cold War there was a popular American motion picture Comedy called The Russians are Coming The Russians Are Coming starring Carl Reiner and Alan Arkin.

It was a story about a Russian submarine that became grounded on a sand bar and the misadventures of its crew entering a small American resort town.

After initially experiencing the expected mistrust and cultural differences, the citizens of the town end up helping the ‘wouldbe invaders’ back out to sea and on their way.

Similarly, the resort town of Pattaya experienced its own Russian invasion and went through its own cultural challenges welcoming its newest tourist group to invade both the local tourist scene and residential scene as well.

Just when it seemed that the Russians pretty much had conquered Pattaya, the ruble fell through the floor; within a matter of months most Russians had fled our city and were on their way back to Russia...just like in the movie!

And—just like many movie franchises—this same Russian

theme looks to have a sequel as the Russians are coming...Back!

Following the devastating tumble in the value of the ruble and the huge drop in oil prices in 2015 when we saw the bottom drop out of the Russian tourist industry with very few Russians returning and almost no new Russian tourists coming to Thailand we are now, according to the Russian Federal Tourism Agency of Thailand and their recent survey, beginning to see Pattaya and Phuket returning to be favored destinations.

Yes, the Russians are back and this year the numbers are expected to rise above one million due to a recent surge in oil prices. The same survey asked Russians where they planned on holidaying in the summer and Thailand ranked in the top ten destinations.

In fact, overall international tourist arrivals grew 12.5 percent in the first five months of this year to 14.2 million while tourism revenue grew 17.3 percent year on year to 709 billion baht. In May alone arrivals grew 5.7 percent year on year to 2.43 million, despite the arrival of the low season. Tourism

revenues in May grew 10.3 percent to 115 billion baht. Foreign tourist arrivals through Don Mueang airport grew 33 percent while Phuket airport arrivals increased 16.2 percent, Hat Yai airport grew 14.9 percent, Chiang Mai airport rose 4.18 percent and Suvarnabhumi rose 3.04 percent for the month.

Now that’s tourism. But what about the rest of Thailand’s economy?

The Thai Ministry of Finance reported that the economy grew 3.2 percent in the first quarter of this year, the fastest growth in three years largely due to strong public spending and large numbers of international tourists. Tourism actually boosted the service sector, which grew by 15.2 percent.

While we welcome the return of Russians, the most recent country to throw its hat into the Thailand economic ring is China; it seems that every industrial estate in Rayong and almost everywhere you look features signs written in Chinese.

It's the same in Pattaya, where Mandarin is increasingly visible

The Thai-Chinese Rayong Industrial Zone, about 200 km (120 miles) southeast of Bangkok, is home to Xu Gen Luo, who runs dozens of new Chineseowned solar, rubber and industrial manufacturing plants which have opened since 2012.

Recently Xu Gen Luo was quoted as saying, "Thailand is usually the first stop for Chinese tourists and investors," noting that it definitely means business and economic success in Thailand’s future.

The growth does not stop there, as Jet Airways is preparing Thailand for even greater tourist numbers with plans to greatly increase flight

with the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in the United States. He is an instructor with the Thailand Real Estate and Business School (TREBS) and heads the International Marketing Committee as vice president for the Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association of Thailand. He also is a council member with the Gerson Lehrman Group, the New York-based international research and consulting firm, and is a registered consultant with the Coleman Research Group in Hong Kong. He has been a national panel judge with the Thailand Property Awards for almost 10 years.

Having done business successfully in the Eastern Seaboard/Pattaya area for over 20 years, Clayton Wade is known throughout the Asia-Pacific region for his public speaking and television presentations as well as

frequencies between India and Thailand.

In fact it was just this last March when the airline raised its seat capacity by a whopping 60 percent by adding a huge number of new direct flights from India to Thailand, and it is considering the addition of new wide-body planes and even more flights.

In 2015, more than one million Indians visited Thailand, up 15 percent from 2014. The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects an 8 percent rise this year.

So whether it is Russians coming back, Indians arriving in jumbo jets or a full blown Chinese invasion, the Thai economic future is really starting to show great promise as we see the next cycle of property development in front of us.

As we here in Pattaya know so well, increased tourism of a particular nationality leads to greater spending and eventually that is realized in our own Eastern Seaboard real estate industry.

Yes, tourists around the globe love coming to Thailand and they all look for any excuse possible to either stay here or come back soon.

What better way to do that than purchasing property here?

There is an oversupply of condominiums in some areas, presenting some great opportunities for bargain hunters, but don’t let this current oversupply fool you into thinking that Pattaya real estate isn’t coming back for a long time.

Yes, do take advantage of this period to find some great deals, but remember you are going to be competing with more and more Russians, Indians and Chinese as the days and months go by, and before you know it, Pattaya and the rest of the Eastern Seaboard will be riding the crest of the next property boom.

Yes, it is just a matter of time before we will witness Jomtien, Na Jomtien, Bangsarey, Huay Yai and Silverlake in the midst of the next property development cycle.

Thailand aims at becoming Asia's ultimate destination for sports tourism

Thailand is positioning itself as a dream destination for sports tourism by promoting the Kingdom’s worldclass sporting facilities, wide-ranging expertise, and reputation for hosting successful regional and international sporting events and tournaments.

H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, unveiled the plan to turn Thailand into a sporting hub to delegates attending the Thailand Travel Mart Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Sub-Region 2016 (TTM+ 2016). This event opened at the Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre and was attended by tourism professionals from all over the world.

Her Excellency said, “Thailand is entering the sports and tourism era, and I would like to invite the world to enjoy some of the many opportunities the Kingdom can offer sport-loving tourists – whether you are enthusiastic amateurs, professionals or somewhere in between. Sports can give people a new way to enjoy and experience Thailand – playing games of golf or football with friends, taking in the scenery while cycling or running or meeting, and competing with Thai people at any of our gyms and sports centres.”

Sports; such as golf, are already popular among tourists coming to Thailand and the Kingdom boasts over 300 world-class courses. But now, the Royal Thai Government, with the support of the Sports Authority of

Thailand and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, wants to help visitors discover other facilities where tourists can enjoy sporting activities. These include 5,000 boxing rings, many with Muay Thai training centres, over 50 diving clubs, and an increasing network of urban and rural cycling lanes which are spreading across the country and are being promoted at a government level.

These world-class facilities mean that Thailand has already played host to many international sports events including the 1997 and 2007 World Weightlifting Championships, the 2014 Asian Beach Games, the 2015 Asian Cycling Championships, and the World Touring Car Championships 2015 (WTCC) held at the Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram province. Thailand has also hosted the Asian Games four times and the South East Asian (SEA) Games three times.

These include badminton player Ratchanon Inthanon who was the first Thai to become number one in the women’s singles and who became world champion in 2014, and rising golfer Ariya Jutanugarn, who is the first player in the Ladies Professional

Golf Association (LPGA) Tour history to get her first three wins consecutively and is now number 10 in the world rankings. Team sports are popular in Thailand too, and the National Volleyball Team recently ranked 13th in the world.

In terms of training and facilities, there are four national training centres in Saraburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla and Chiang Mai. There are also private facilities up and down the country that can be used by sports lovers including Thanyapura Phuket, which has some of the best sports facilities in Asia including two 50-metre Olympic class swimming pools, and is the first Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) training centre in Southeast Asia. Many international sports people and teams come to Thanyapura to train including the British and Australian national swimming teams.

In addition, Stamford International University in Bangkok recently partnered with Real Madrid to offer the first MBA in Sports Management in Thailand to train a new generation of sports trainers.

CLOSING A COMPANY IN THAILAND Closing a company requires strict compliance with the laws and regulations of the relevant Thailand government agencies. Financial, auditing and legal aspects of the company must be settled accordingly.

A limited company may be dissolved due to the following: 1. If provided by its regulations 2. The company is formed for a specified period of time, by the expiration of such period 3. The company is formed for a single undertaking, by the termination of that undertaking 4. Special resolution to dissolve the company 5. The company is bankrupt A limited company may also be dissolved by the court on the following grounds: 1. If default is made in filing the statutory report or in holding the statutory meeting.

2.

If the company does not commence business within a year from the date of registration or suspends its business for a whole year.

3. If the business of the company can only be carried on at a loss and there is no prospect of its fortunes, being retrieved.

4. If the number of the shareholders is reduced to less than three.

According to Thai law, shareholders’ meeting must be summoned to discuss the liquidation process and to confirm the appointment of the liquidator(s). Invitation letters must be published in a local newspaper and must also be sent by registered mail to all the shareholders of the company at least 14 days prior to the date of the meeting. The meeting may direct the liquidators to make an inventory or whatever is necessary for the settlement of the affairs of the company. The liquidators have the authority to settle the affairs of the company, to pay its debts and to allocate its assets.

The dissolution of the company and the names of the liquidators must then be registered with the Department of Business Development, Ministry of Commerce within 14 days from the approved closing date of the company. The liquidators must, as soon as possible, prepare the company’s financial statement and have it examined and certified by the appointed auditor and consequently notify the public by advertising in a local paper announcing the liquidation of the company to warn its creditors, if any. A notice should also be sent by registered mail to each creditor requesting

them to file a claim for debts owed to them by the company. The liquidators may require the shareholders to pay their unpaid shares at once. If the liquidators find that after the shares have been paid up and the assets are still insufficient to meet the liabilities, they must apply at once to the court to start bankruptcy proceedings.

The company must file its tax return and settle all taxes due. VAT registered companies have to apply for VAT de-registration within 15 days prior to the company’s closing date and return the TAX ID card along with the VAT Registration Certificate (Por Por 20) to the Revenue Department. A penalty shall be imposed for failure to comply within the specified time.

Once the assets and liabilities of the company are fully liquidated, the liquidator must call the final shareholders’ meeting to present an account report of the liquidation showing how the liquidation has been carried out and how the assets of the company have been disposed of. After the account report is approved, the proceedings of the meeting must be registered with the Department of Business Development within 14 days from its date by the liquidators. Such registration is taken as being the end of the liquidation.

During the liquidation process, the liquidators must file a report of their activities, showing the accounting of the liquidation process every three months with the Department of Business Development until the liquidation process is finished and the Revenue Department has issued a letter to the DBD certifying that the company is free of taxes. The DBD will then issue a document to certify that the company’s liquidation has been completed.

After the liquidation, the balance sheets of the liquidated company shall be deposited within 14 days at the Department of Business Development where they shall be kept open for public inspection.

As the world grows wealthier, demand for meat leads to massive demand for grain feed The World’s population is now more than 7 billion and continues to grow by 82 million a year. During the last half-century, the total number of people has more than doubled. Between 1960 and 2010, the world population rose from 3 billion to 6.8 billion. In other words, there has been more growth in the last 50 years than the previous 2 million years that humans have existed. Currently the rate of increase is 1.2 percent per year, which means we are on a trajectory to double again in 58 years.

The extreme growth in human population – now counted by an additional billion people every 12 to 13 years — is taxing the Earth and its resources. Some people may be relatively less damaging than others, but none of us is without an ecological footprint. Everybody needs basic resources but almost all of us aspire to utilise significantly more resources than are required by our basic needs. These needs and aspirations are multiplied by a factor of 7 billion affecting the stability of the planet’s ecosphere, states the Population Media Centre.

Food demand and Production Putting food on the world's tables is a serious business. The United Nations' index of global food prices hit a record high recently.There have been riots over rising food prices in Algeria and Tunisia. In Sri Lanka, the army has started buying up vegetables from producers and selling them at low prices to ensure locals can get affordable meals.

And prices in our own shops are reflecting a surge in world demand for essentials ranging from beef to wheat. Beef rose by 20 percent in 2015, according to the latest official inflation figures. Some of this increase in prices reflects short-term shortages after poor harvests and the effect of commodity speculators. But there is also a longer-term trend of rising prices as consumers around the world want better, more protein-rich diets.

Investing in companies that help meet a growing demand for food and farming products could prove both ethical and fertile for investors. It takes 7 lbs of grain to make 1lb of beef and 4 lbs of grain to produce 1 lb of pork.

As the middle class in the emerging world gets richer, there is a greater demand for meat and hence for grain and feed. Similarly, higher wealth is boosting demand for agricultural products ranging from cotton to coffee.

One option for investors is to join the speculators and try to profit directly from the growth in commodity prices but this is risky. Many feel following the agricultural theme by investing in shares of agricultural businesses is a better option than the unpredictable and volatile commodity futures markets.

Specialist investment funds are open to investors. These funds invest in companies worldwide that are linked to agriculture such as fertiliser producers and farm machinery manufacturers. Some also invest in firms that are further down the food chain, such as processors and even consumer food companies.

Farmers have to invest in higher-yielding seeds and use more machinery and fertiliser to boost production. One fund has a narrow focus on buying into companies that are directly involved with agriculture. Their fund price has returned an annualised 9.5 percent since 2007.

Some like a broader base, looking to invest "from field to fork". This means the portfolio can include food processing companies and even some infrastructure investment. This sector has appeal for many as the explosion in the planet’s population continues to challenge the world’s food industry, with demand for most staple foods increasing almost exponentially.

Business News Fiji Airways and Jetstar join forces to bring Thailand closer to the South Pacific

Chevrolet Announces Mid-Year Sales Campaign

Interline partnership to offer one-stop flights from Thailand to Fiji Fiji Airways and Jetstar announced the launch of an interline partnership to provide seamless, single ticket air travel from Thailand to Fiji, and onwards in the South Pacific for the first time.

The new commercial agreement between the Fijian flag carrier and the Jetstar Group of branded airlines including Jetstar Airways, Jetstar Asia, Jetstar Japan and Jetstar Pacific, will connect Fiji Airways’ newly launched Singapore to Nadi route, with more than 21 destinations on Jetstar’s network from Singapore, including Thailand.

Fiji Airways commenced twiceweekly direct flights to Singapore on April 5, creating the first ever direct flights between Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.

Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways managing director and CEO said, “We’re excited to expand our reach in Asia through this partnership with Jetstar to connect more destinations in the region to our extensive South Pacific network.

“This interline agreement will offer a seamless travel experience from 21 cities in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, The Philippines, Cambodia and

Myanmar, to Fiji, via Singapore. It also opens new travel possibilities for the growing number of South Pacific travellers looking to explore Asia.”

While the agreement covers all 73 destinations served by the Jetstar Group, including Jetstar Airways in Australia, the immediate take-up will be for Jetstar destinations from Singapore.

Youth Focus Cultivate a growth mindset

by Hettie Visser Do we want to raise children who fear failure or would we rather have children who embrace challenges? It all depends on the way they see themselves and it is our responsibility to help them to develop the right mindset.

The child with a growth mindset believes you can get smarter and that success is about stretching yourself. The child with a fixed mindset believes that he is born smart and doesn’t make any mistakes. This mindset is already being formed in the preschool years.

Benjamin Barber, an eminent sociologist, says he doesn’t divide the world into successes and failures but into learners and non-learners. What would make someone into a non-learner?

Babies are born with an intense drive to learn and to stretch their skills - the most difficult skills of a lifetime, like learning to walk and talk. Babies never decide something is too hard or not worth the effort. They don’t worry about making mistakes

or humiliating themselves.

They walk, fall and get up.

What could then put an end to this irrepressible learning process? The answer is the fixed mindset. Professor Carol Dweck, a leading researcher in the field of developmental psychology, did a study with four year olds. After building an easy puzzle they were given the choice of building the same puzzle or a more difficult one.

A child with the fixed mindset answered: I’ll do the same one.

The final examinations for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme have just finished, and the students celebrated the end of their studies with a graduation evening at the Mövenpick Resort on May 28.

To begin the evening, the school's Head Boy and Head Girl welcomed everyone and IB Coordinator Ian Fraser gave a speech praising the students' efforts and thanking parents for their support. In between speeches and musical performances, guests enjoyed a fantastic buffet dinner.

Guidelines to develop a growth mindset: 1. Replace Generic Praise with Process Praise “Generic praise is easy to give — Well done! Excellent work! Wow! — but these statements lack instructional value. The most effective praise emphasizes one of three things: a child’s effort, a child’s strategies, or a child’s actions. The trick is to help kids tie their success to the strategies and steps they are taking.” In contrast, descriptive statements — also called “process praise”— share specific observations about children’s choices and efforts.

They are teaching statements because they provide information children can use in the future. (Dr. Carissa Romero, director of programs at Stanford University’s Project for Education Research That Scales).

2. “When your child is struggling on something or has setbacks, don’t focus on their abilities, focus on what they can learn from it. One way is to ask a child: “How can you use this as a jumpingoff point?” (Kyla Haimovitz, professor of psychology at

Cult Camp Classics strike the dust For those who love bad movies Just the thing for Christmas – three rather silly historical epics under one roof, or rather one DVD label by Warner.

Cult Camp Classics 4 brings you Land of the Pharaohs, The Prodigal and The Colossus of Rhodes, all from the 1950s or thereabouts. Gr....eat!

Now awful movies do have a following. Some people collect them for fun and others because the discs might be worth a fortune in the late 21st century. Also, they give rise to

endless discussions about which is actually the worst movie of all time. Such arguments have in the past led to divorces, gun fights and at least one murder.

All three movies have one thing in common – a love of spectacle. Grand armies are put together from a cast of thousands and Land of the Pharaohs has 9,787 of them in full costume in one scene alone.

That’s according to the blurb on the back of the DVD. The Colossus of Rhodes has fight

scene after fight scene, each one struggling to be even better than the last. The Prodigal can’t manage that but it does show several hundred worthy citizens of Damascus battering down the gates of the temple of Baal and Istate to bring organized religion to a sudden end.

But the spectacle can’t disguise the quite dreadful story lines. In Land of the Pharaohs you have Jack Hawkins going on and on about life after death and how to take all your treasure with you. It’s a big yawn. Then there are lengthy sequences of the luckless slaves being whipped into submission as they labour on the construction. Surely, there’s a limit to the number of times you can see limestone being cut before you fall asleep.

In the Prodigal, Richard Thorpe manages to take 22 sentences in the Gospels and make it into a two hour movie.

The theme is simply that a complete wastrel, Edmund Purdom, takes his legacy a bit early, wastes it all on prostitutes and returns to the fatted calf in his home town reunion.

There are some good moments, notably when Purdom has to take on a vulture on strings in a death pit for plague victims.

Incidentally, it’s said that this scene gave Alfred Hitchcock the inspiration to make The Birds, but that may be wishful thinking. But otherwise The Prodigal is the ever so slow moving movie about a spoiled brat who listens to nobody.

While the Colossus of Rhodes suffers from the same pacing problems as the other two, it’s probably the best of the bunch as it’s fun, lively and crammed with high action sequences. This is Sergio Leone’s first credited directorship and describes how a crack team of elite rebels manage to bring down the evil ruler of ancient Greece.

The one silver lining to this camp collection is that the three films have been beautifully transferred to DVD. Each movie has a commentary which gives you more than enough information to deal with the rather thin story lines.

Land of the Pharaohs actually has an interview with Howard Hawks, the inspiration behind ancient Egypt, and it must be the only chat involving a director who actually admits he didn’t like the movie. Christopher Frayling gives more than enough background information on the real Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Prodigal is the driest of the three, but there is a useful trot through the history of paganism culminating in Baal and Istate, the male and female of all creation, who could ruin your crops if they were not appeased with human sacrifices. Oh, and by the way, the young man who jumps voluntarily into the fiery pit to his death was a great pal of sportsman Babe Ruth. You could hardly ask for more.

Local Sports Thailand’s new Mixed Martial Artists take to the big stage at FMD11

The sad passing of Muhammad Ali was marked by the fighters and fans at the opening of FMD11: Sweep all the Legs on June 4 at Insanity Nightclub, Bangkok. But soon some of the region’s top upand-coming mixed martial artists were marking the day with a fitting tribute, by competing in Thailand’s top MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event promotion, Full Metal Dojo.This was the company’s 11th event since their inaugural show two years previously, with nine professional MMA bouts on the card, coming just a week after Asia’s leading MMA organization, One Championship’s blockbuster first Thai MMA event.

There was added electricity in the air with the recent announcement of Full Metal Dojo’s MMA TV series, premiering on True Sport 6 at 7 pm on Thursday, June 9, repeated twice daily. The weekly 30-minute episodes will show every full fight from all of FMD’s previous and future MMA events, giving

all of the fighters and gyms involved a huge new platform to promote themselves and the country’s combat sports industry. With four seasons scheduled, running all the way into 2017, it marks a watershed moment for the booming sport of MMA in Thailand.

On a night of memorable debut performances with nine professional MMA bouts on the card, Thailand’s 17-yearold Sunsisa Srisan stole the show, and the hearts of the crowd, surviving an early onslaught to claim a stunning victory. She wept tears of joy as the judge raised her hand, following her 2nd round TKO of Malaysia’s Audreylaura Boniface via ground and

pound. It was a performance of courage and cold-bloodedness from the Thailand wrestling champion, who simply refused to lose, even as Boniface was in full mount raining punches down upon her.

In the fight of the night, two more MMA debutants, Trevor McKenzie and Francois Xavier Leal dela Torre.showed a full range of MMA skills, as the US Navy wrestler McKenzie overwhelmed Leal de la Torre eventually and finished with a slick arm-bar submission. The Frenchman had displayed his heart and high-caliber muay Thai, but was repeatedly muscled down by the Phuket Top Team rookie. McKenzie proved himself a force to be reckoned with in the cage with such a strong wrestling base.

Elsewhere on the card, Israeli Toni Hitman from Phuket Top Team was swiftly submitted by Iran’s Ali Motamed. Tommy Hayden divides his coaching time between Bangkok Fight Lab and Hero Factory and his fighters all displayed superior wrestling skills to previous fights, which Hayden no doubt played a huge part in, underlining the huge importance of a strong wrestling base in modern MMA. Stableford Blue tees Ten Bunker Boys set off to take advantage of the special discount this month at Laem Chabang. There was a heavy shower as we left Pattaya, but although the rain clouds and thunder hung around, we were able to complete a rain free round. The threat of rain and the knowledge that the Mountain course was closed for coring and top dressing, and the Valley and Lake had only just been sanded, probably deterred people as the course was deserted (apparently only 9 groups were playing). The greens on the Lake nine had recovered well, but they were still slow and uneven on the Valley nine.

Against the wishes of the shorter hitters, we elected to play off the blue tees, which was a big mistake as many of them were placed next to the black's resulting in several players having trouble making the water carries. As a result scores were not good. Marty Rock and Jimmy Carr had good opening 9's with 18 points but fell away on the back.

Mark Stanley, with 18 points on the back nine including a no score on the 18th, took the honors with 32 points. Roger Tuohy edged out Jimmy Carr for second on count back with 31 points. Naturally Jimmy Carr routinely picked up a near pin prize.Most of us want to return as it is a beautiful course but with a very definite vote to play off the white.

Near Pins Roger Tuohy and Jimmy Carr Mountain Shadow Stableford Blue Tees Eleven brave souls headed up to a course that has been showing bare patches because of the drought but were welcomed by reinvigorated fairways and greens due to the recent rains. We thought we were going to get wet but luckily missed the impending showers. The first three ball made their way around the course in record time and had already departed when the fourballs made it to the locker room.However, speed was of no assistance as none of them managed to win, place, or show. Tony Robbins, who felt deprived of the GOM, made an early start in the new month by edging out Geoff Parker on a count back. Peter Allen, playing in the first group, was sure he had won two near pins only to find out that Tony Robbins had deprived him of both.

Local Sports The Golf Club St. Andrews – Monthly Medal – White Tees It was a very sad week here at The Golf Club as we mourned the passing of a great friend, Aumporn Prakai. Aum was only 46 and fit as a fiddle, which made her loss such a tragedy.

Aum was part of the family here and will be forever missed.

There was a tournament at our regular venue of Green Valley today, so we were happily shifted over to St. Andrews for a change. This would make for a most interesting monthly medal and the results were the closest we have ever had. Four of our finest were to shoot 77 net so we referred to the countback system for the winning score.

The golf course was in great condition as were a few of the players this morning. After a few café latte’s we were perked up enough to set off for the course and our 9:27 tee time.

Weather conditions were also perfect as an overcast sky gave welcome relief from the heat.

Visiting from Japan, Yasuo Sakai was the near pin winner today on that long par-3 17th hole.

The stroke play contest was a tight one and a foursome at 77 were to have their cards reviewed for the countback. When the results were in, it was to be another victory for the inimitable Ken Aihara. Ken won last month as well, and today’s win makes him our best medal golfer with 6 victories under his very small belt.

Corey must have had the winnings already spent with a 43 on the card…and who could blame him? All it takes is one bloke to spoil the party, and the deadly Smedley returns with a vengeance to card a 45 point round. This was Phil’s best ever round in Thailand and will not be beaten any time soon. The Captain had a 21 on the front with a blistering back nine 24 to be a poor host and s#ndb@&in* M*_#erf*@^er to total 45 Stableford points. Well played, Phil, let’s look at that handicap next week!

We scheduled our event for Friday knowing the course would be wide open and it was. The easy drive back was also a bonus, beating that Friday rush hour.

Buzzer goes to infinity and beyond!

Plutaluang Eighteen golfers had made it their mission to take on the Big Navy course and at 1,000 baht for green fee cart and caddie it was well worth the journey. Big Navy can be daunting to some but personally I find it a challenging course in particular north and west and that is what we played off the yellow tees.

It was a day that we did not get one complaint regarding the course and the way the course played. All aspects of this course played as a course should. Credit goes to staff and management for the great job that they have done and the foresight to make it affordable.

Ian (Buzzer) Parry set the field alight with a fantastic 44 points, talk about saving the best till last. Coming in second was Denis Steele from Martin Todd, Sal Brizzi and Bernie Mc Cart.

by Derek Brook Khao Kheow (Stableford) After the dry fairways of the last few months we went to Khao Kheow with hope as some of our players had just played in and assured us the course was in fine condition.

After recent rain in the area the course actually had grass.

Like most of the courses, it seems that of late the usage has been sparse so we have been getting some great rates from some of the courses and this has included Khao Kheow. So not only would we get to play this excellent course but play it at a rate that we have not played it at in my memory. Happy days.

All went well, we had a fine run up there and the book in was quick and painless as it usually is at this fine course.

Then into the changing rooms to get changed. There I met my first problem as I realised I had left my spikes at home.

However, Landis lent me his practice pair. Really kind of him but he has small feet. Ever played a round in small spikes?

Never again.

So onto the course and we were to find that the test for the day was to be the B and C Nines and we were able to get away on time on a course, we saw nobody ahead all the way around. And what

With grass around, what a fine walk around and the greens were fine as usual except they were a bit ‘Hairy’, but you cannot have everything in life. With shoes off, I gratefully walked from the course to the changing room and breathed a sigh as I removed my socks and soaked my feet. It has been decided I need a minder to ensure I can get to the course in one piece.

Back at BJ’s it was soon time for the results. In the A Flight, zero to 14, the winner was Brian Parish with 37

points with Tommy Marshall in second with 34 points ahead of a countback on 31 points that saw Landis Brooks in third ahead of Paul Smith.

In the B Flight with the best score of the day we had Brian Gabe as winner with 38 points. In second was Dick Warberg with 36 points ahead of a countback on 35 points that saw Tom Herrington in third ahead of Bob Britton.

You & Your Pets Cats may crave people food but…

Cats for You in Pattaya

Yeah, yeah. Felix is a member of your family and enjoys sharing your meals. But is it a good idea to give him people food?

The simple answer is: sometimes.

It’s probably not a good idea to allow your cat to sit at the dinner table or even to sit under it begging for morsels from your plate. At some point that will become an annoyance and may lead to unwelcomed leaps onto your lap and table top. More importantly, people food doesn’t have all the nutrients cats and kittens need. In fact, most of their diet should be a nutritionally complete cat food. And it should be eaten from their bowls.

That said, Felix may be allowed the occasional table scrap if you choose feline-friendly snacks.

That is to say, cats are carnivores. They need meat protein for a strong heart, good vision, and a healthy reproductive system. So by all means share cooked beef, chicken, turkey, and lean deli meats, but nothing raw. Cooked or canned fish also is fine; it helps their vision. But sushi is a no no.

Having white rice with your meal? Don’t invite Ms Kitty. You can try brown rice, but you probably will need to mash it first; cats like smaller grains like couscous and polenta, but they must be cooked for

Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees.

They’re a rich source of vitamins and water.

Felix and Ms Kitty may take more of a liking to things like eggs (cooked, of course) and cheese, but only in moderation. In fact, any people food should be shared in moderation and only occasionally to avoid weight and health problems.

Speaking of which, skip the milk (cats don’t need it and it may cause diarrhea) and shun such toxic foods as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, bread dough and alcohol.

Charlie is a special case and needs to go to a new home on his own. He is deaf, blind in one eye and has only a little vision in the other.

He will not get on with any other cats and dogs and so must be an only pet. He loves people though and just loves to nip your toes !

Madge

Madge is a very friendly girl who loves to be stroked and cuddled.

She is around six years old now but still runs about the house and garden like a young kitten. She looks a bit mean in this photo but a very loving cat.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

Felix

Felix is the "Big Boss" of the household and was our first Thai rescued cat. He is now nearly 10 years old but is still in prime condition.

He is an excellent hunter, keeping the garden free of snakes and vermin.

Zero

Constant scratching is a classic sign of fleas, which can be even more serious if your pet is hypersensitive to the parasites. Determining if your cat or dog has fleas can be tricky. If a visual inspection or a flea combing does not reveal the problem, check for the telltale sign of flea “dirt” (digested blood that the flea deposits in the fur) which usually is seen along the lower back, tail

base, or around the neck.

If no fleas or flea dirt are found, but your pet is scratching in these areas, a treatment trial with a veterinarian-recommended flea medication is warranted. You must treat all pets in the household for several months to completely eradicate the fleas.

There are more fake flamingos in the world than real flamingos.

Zero is an old timer and spends most of her time chilling out in the garden in some shady spot.

She loves her food and will run at a great pace as soon as she hears a tin of tuna being opened.

Try ignoring your cat for about 15 minutes before you leave and when you get back. Leave out some of his favorite toys and put them away when you come back. Play with him regularly to burn extra energy so he'll rest when he's alone.
