Immigration form compulsory

T

he Thai Immigration Bureau has confirmed that its latest additional requirement, Foreign National Information Form, applies all over Thailand and must be filled in by farang when they apply for extensions here or make or renew their one year visas. The form is now in use at offices of Chonburi Immigration. Until recently, the form was on pilot at Bangkok and Phuket offices only.

An immigration spokesperson said the new form must be filled in every time an alien applies for any extension or submits the paperwork for a one year visa or registers for the 90 day reporting period. In other words, the form needs to be completed every time a submission is made. The general advice is for foreigners to keep a copy of their answers for future reference.

The form also has space for a small, passport-size photo.

The form contains about 10 questions requiring respondents to provide details of their passports, names of mother and father, home base

address (whether Thailand or abroad or both), vehicle registration, contact details of a Thai and farang friend or relative and – for one year submissions only – details of Thai bank account. There are supplementary questions on social media useage – those are described on the form as optional – and frequentlyvisited places listed as clubs, restaurants, shops and hospitals.

The bureau says that the new form will be helpful in both tracking down undesirable aliens and also in bringing assistance to those with a problem. For example, the details on car ownership and hospitals might be useful in helping the victims of accidents in some circumstances.

Opponents of the new form, who have been vocal in the Englishlanguage Thai press and on social media, argue that some of the information demanded is private or should be.

They also claim that foreign criminals will find ways of disguising matters such as their personal details, assets and habits.

In fact, much of the required data is already held by immigration authorities or – like car ownership – is a matter easily checked by reference to other government databases.

The section on social media is clearly stated as optional and adds the clarification that it would be used as a means of

communication from officials.

The form also has a lot of extra space for applicants to file more information about themselves if they so choose.

It is unclear at the moment whether the new forms will be entered onto a master database or will be simply filed

News Thai pickpocket under arrest

Disappointed in her sexuality A Chinese tourist, who began dating what he assumed was a person of the feminine gender, was very upset on finding out that his new contact was actually of the third person identity.

Hsiao Shun-Wen, aged 32, and his male friend both had swollen faces after the transgender hit them before escaping after her ladyboy identity was plain to see. The principal victim later said he had met the transgender on Facebook but had no idea he was texting another guy, thus leading to an argument and a painful head.

Customer and client can’t agree An Uzbek tourist complained to police that a man she was dating had robbed her after visiting her room. Urazalieva Feruza, 26, said that her date, said to be a boxing promoter, took 2,000 baht and a cellphone in spite of her attempts to make him see reason. But the man in the story said he had paid 1,000 baht for an unspecified yet welcome service, had fallen asleep and then woke up to see the lady going through his pockets.

Consequently, he had hit her in the face and taken her purse.

Police are still trying to sort out truth from fiction.

Police organized a press conference to reveal the arrest of 31year old Patchara Eimsa-ard who was suspected of robbing several baht bus passengers on separate occasions. Various complainants had stated they had lost sums of 20,000-40,000 baht when their valuables were stolen as they sat in close proximity to the alleged thief. She was eventually detained in her room in central Pattaya after informants told investigators of the location where she was holed up.

When a motorcycle hit an elderly man in front of Pattaya Police Station, a passing motorist, Dr. Peerawat Kanchabenja, provided immediate first aid to the victim, 65-year-old Amporn Khaokaew. The motorcycle driver, Somkiat Kawaothong, aged 51, offered to cover Amporn’s medical expenses.

Heavy rain causes fatality

A man identified as Teerayuth Saengnumpong, 31, was seen badly injured lying on Beach Road. Witness Sorawat Photichai said they were drinking on the beach with Sompong Wuttiwong when suddenly the suspect hit Teerayuth in the face with a bottle, then stabbed him. Sorawat tried to stop Sompong but he was assaulted as well.

Four men were arrested for raping a 32-year-old Thai woman. Khanueng Kaesa, 29, Pairoj Boonmee, 42, Apichart Phankompin, 34 and Chamnarn Kongplien, 43, denied the allegations.

The victim, called Kik, said that seven to eight Thai men claiming to be police officers arrested her for dealing drugs. She denied the charges but admitted to having used drugs. The said police officers promised to release Kik in return for 100,000 baht. First, however, the men wanted to investigate her residence.

As they drove through a dark area of Jomtien, one of the men pointed a gun at her and raped her. She subsequently was kept in a safe house for three days.

The four suspects were released on the same day they were arrested; they were told to return to court the next morning; only two suspects showed up. Arrest warrants were issued for Apichart and Chamnarn.

Tour guides abandon 38 Chinese tourists

A motorbike driver who crashed into an unlit cement barrier in central Pattaya was the victim of recent storms, according to police. Boonsueb Duangchan, 37 from Pitsanulok province, was pronounced dead on arrival at Banglamung Hospital. Witnesses said the doomed driver was proceeding in heavy rain when he suddenly crashed into the obstruction and received fatal head injuries.

One or more tour guides abandoned 38 Chinese tourists in the lobby of their hotel, the R-Con Hotel in Wongamart. The group had bought their package tour from Taiwan Kua Tang Co., Ltd. for 357,200 baht. However, on arrival at the hotel, the guides demanded additional money. When the tourists refused, the tour guides disappeared. The police ordered the hotel to allow the group to stay in their rooms, according to Tourist Police Inspector Pol. Major Piyapong Aenarn.

The police later arrested 35-year-old Udon Thani native Nanthakarn Khanhasinthu, charging her with violating the Travel Agency Business and Guide Act. The suspect admitted that she was hired by the tour company but said a Chinese man named Kun took over the group and told the Thai woman to stay in her room. Police also arrested another suspect, 26-year-old Li Jinkun. He was charged with having no work permit or valid tour guide permit. Both suspects were detained.

News Title Holder Thaworn and Major Winner Immelman Headline King’s Cup Defending champion Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand and Major winner Trevor Immelman of South Africa will be among the top stars headlining the US$750,000 King’s Cup next month.

Thaworn won the 2014 King’s Cup for a record 18th Asian Tour title and will defend the prestigious trophy against a strong line-up which includes the 2008 Masters Tournament champion Immelman.

For the first time in the history of the King’s Cup, the tournament will be sanctioned by t h e A s ia n T ou r a nd European Tour at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya from July 28 to 31, 2016.

At the age of 49, the evergreen Thaworn continues to shine on the Asian Tour where he has won the Order of Merit crown twice and notched 18 victories, a record on the region’s premier Tour.

With His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej celebrating his 70th year as the King of Thailand, Thaworn is eager to keep the revered trophy on home soil.

“It is a great honour for me to defend my title at the King’s Cup. The King’s Cup is such

an important tournament for the Thai players. I’m proud to be a winner of the King’s Cup and I’ll do my best to defend this prestigious trophy,” said Thaworn.

“There are many young and up-coming players who will challenge for the trophy and I’ve not played my best golf yet this year. But it is different when you are fighting for the King’s Cup because this is a trophy which you want to keep in Thailand,” he added.

Immelman, a four-time European Tour winner, will make a welcome return to Thailand for the first time since 2004.

“I’m excited to play in the King’s Cup. I’ve heard great things about the event and I’m looking forward to the challenge. The standard of golf in Asia has grown tremendously over the past few years which is great for the sport,” said the 36-year-old Immelman.

The King’s Cup, supported by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), will receive global coverage on the Asian Tour’s extensive television platform which has a potential reach of over 180 nations and territories and 740 million homes.

The field for the King’s Cup will comprise of 90 players from the Asian Tour, 25 from The European Tour, 25 from Thailand PGA and 16 invite spots. Prize money earned from the tournament will count towards the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit and also on the Race to Dubai ranking on The European Tour.

The King’s Cup will be the second tournament in Thailand to be jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and The European Tour following the staging of the True Thailand Classic earlier this season.

However, one retired officer summarized, “What is not a good idea is to tell lies on this form. You will never be sure that wrong information won’t come back to haunt you later on. Most of the information is routine when dealing with government bureaucracies and not worth making a fuss about. If there is something you feel you really cannot answer, then explain to the recording officer your concerns”. He added that there is a lot of inaccurate discussion on social media about the new form.

Mazda creates history with 4,000-km Thai-Laos-Vietnam-Cambodia caravan

The “Mazda SKYACTIV ASEAN Caravan” emphasizes Mazda’s outstanding brand image in this region and will serve as a crucial test for Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology. Participants come from 5 different ASEAN nations, taking turns to complete the 4,000-kilometer journey around 4 countries.

The event draws the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to the opening ceremony, along with distinguished guests from both the government and private sectors, to be held at the King Rama V Statue in Bangkok.

The total distance of the 9-day journey is 4,000 kilometers. There are 140 participants from 5 countries – Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore – and they will have an opportunity to visit historic sites in each country the caravan passes through.

This is the first ASEAN caravan that will be taken part by members from various AEC countries, and Mazda is proud to be a part in opening the door to the ASEAN region.

Thailand named as host country for Destination Wedding Planners Congress 2017

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) and QNA International signed an agreement for Thailand to host the 4th Annual Destination Wedding Planners Congress 2017 (DWP Congress 2017).

This event is scheduled from May 2-4, 2017, and is expected to attract 450 delegates from around the world.

Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of TAT said, “We are delighted that Thailand has been chosen as the host country for the prestigious Destination Wedding Planners Congress 2017. Thailand is a highly attractive country for couples looking to get married or enjoy honeymoons, and we can boast a wide range of wedding packages, romantic settings and luxurious, private accommodation. Police campaign for tourist safety

All seven local police stations in the greater Pattaya area attended a meeting in which commanders stressed that more checkpoints needed to be established to protect the resort’s evergrowing tourist numbers, especially from China and Japan. It was reported that police are now recording their arrests on smart phones which had increased greatly information-exchange and the collection of documentation which are an integral part of the successful prosecution of undesirables.

News Thai tourism projected to show good growth in first half of 2016

The Thai tourism industry is projected to record international visitor arrivals of 16.67 million in January-June 2016, which will be up 13 percent over the same period of 2015. Projected earnings are estimated at 824 billion baht, up 17 percent.

Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, made the announcement at a press conference on the Thailand Tourism Situation in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2016. The event was held at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok Hotel.

Also present at the media conference were Ittirit Kinglake, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, Charoen Wangananont, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, and Supawan Tanomkiatipume, president of the Thai Hotels Association.

Yuthasak said “In the first half of 2016, Thailand is projected to record 1.24 trillion baht in tourism receipts, covering both international and domestic tourism. International visitor arrivals are projected at 16.67 million, up by 13 percent over the first half of 2015, generating an estimated 824 billion baht in tourism receipts (+17 percent). Domestic travel is projected to generate over 75 million trips, up 4 percent over

the first half of 2015, generating an estimated 416 billion baht in tourism receipts (+6 percent).”

Both the first and second quarters of 2016 recorded strong increases.

In the first quarter, international visitors were up 15 percent and tourism receipts were up 19 percent.

The second quarter is projected to have recorded 9 percent growth in international visitors and 14 percent growth in tourism receipts.

All the source major markets affected by the bomb blast in the Ratchaprasong Intersection in 2015 showed a quick recovery; such as, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. In addition, long-haul markets also showed a good recovery particularly from Europe.

Domestic travel is also projected to improve steadily due to signs of a recovery in the Thai economy.

The first quarter January-March 2016 period recorded 37.4 million domestic trips, up by 3.6 percent, generating an estimated 212 billion baht (+6 percent) in receipts. The second quarter April-June period is projected to record an increase of 4.4percent to 37.7 million trips, generating an estimated 200 billion baht (+6 percent) due to the Songkran Festival in April and other long weekend holidays.

The most popular regions for domestic travel in the first two quarters were Bangkok (18.3 million trips), Central Region (16 million trips) and Northeast Region (13.4 million trips).

Yuthasak said, “TAT is forecasting that in the 3rd quarter of 2016, Thailand will receive 635 billion baht (+14 percent) in receipts from international and domestic tourism.”

This forecast is based on projected international visitor arrivals of 8.30 million (+14 percent), generating an estimated 423 billion baht (+18 percent). The top-five markets in terms of tourism receipts are projected as China (146 billion baht, +32 percent), Malaysia (22.5 billion baht, +15 percent), Australia (17.8 billion baht, +4 percent), Japan (17.6 billion baht, +7 percent), and the UK (15.1 billion baht, +6 percent). The positive direction is underlined by various factors. The forward flight bookings to Thailand in particular for long-haul markets send a positive sign. The launch of several new routes from China’s secondary cities include Chengdu and Chong Qing to Koh Samui. Moreover, the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale in June and the upcoming Women’s Journey project in August will help stimulate travel during the Green Season and female travellers, respectively.

Sausages Ahoy It is said that 2,000 sausages are eaten in Pattaya every day, but do the consumers know what they are devouring? Last year they almost jumped out of their skin when WHO’s International Cancer Research categorized processed meats such as sausage, ham and bacon not just unhealthy but positively dangerous. Apparently, even Thai favourites such as kun chiang (Chinese sausage) or naem (Thai-style fermented sausage) are risky too.

This is because in the manufacturing process, various chemicals are added to prevent the growth of bacteria in the food and to maintain the original pink colour of the meat. One solution is to steam your sausages or bacon, rather than fry or grill them, as there are fewer downsides that way. Then again, you can switch wholeheartedly to fruit and vegetables which are rich in vitamins and very good for you. But not in the form of chips!

Nutty Advice It has become an article of faith amongst pregnant ladies that they should avoid eating nuts and shellfish during pregnancy and during breast feeding to reduce the risk of their babies developing an allergy to them. But now the American Academy of Pediatrics has produced new guidelines which state that avoiding these products may encourage the very allergies they seek to prevent. In a test study 11 percent of babies who were exposed to peanuts developed an allergy compared with 35 percent of those denied them. As with many things in healthcare, there is no clear answer. Avoidance of certain foods is sometimes needed for those with severe reactions, but things backfire when the same rules are applied to everyone.

Long Life Eggs Only one person born in the 19th century is still alive today: 116-year old Italian Emma Morano who is enjoying the limelight as the oldest person in the world. The record for longevity is still held by Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and around 6 months. Emma was born in November 1899 and has reportedly not left her flat for 25 years. Contrary to all received medical opinion, Emma has thrived in spite of giving up fruit and vegetables in favour of a diet which features at least one raw egg a day and portions of raw minced pork. She has maintained this regime over many decades and remains a creature of habit, rising at eight, lunching at eleven and having dinner at six. Incidentally, according to research conducted a few years ago, the average age of death of expats in Thailand is a discouraging 66 years.

Job Opportunity With bars and restaurants sometimes closing rather than reopening these days, it may be time to think of a new business nobody has tried yet. A few years ago, an English guy made a fortune making wedding dresses in Pattaya and exporting them back to Europe for a fraction of what they would cost over there. More recently, another guy did rather well forwarding to addresses abroad non-nicotine cigarettes until it was discovered that the practice is illegal. One gap in the Pattaya market seems to be wigs for men. In spite of periodic discussions on social media, it seems that there is not actually a publicly-identifiable business in our fair city specializing in this particular form of vanity. Looking around at the many bald, farang heads in Pattaya, there may be a small fortune awaiting some intelligent entrepreneur.

Transgender Transformation Ever so slowly, it has to be admitted, the stereotype of cross-dressers is beginning to change on the Eastern Seaboard. Traditionally, transvestites and transgenders have been given a limited role in the mass media – stealing your necklace and escaping on a motorbike or poisoning a drink to remove your possessions whilst you are unconscious – but that’s beginning to change, or rather to become diversified. It is now common to see transgenders working in supermarkets, banks, hospitals and restaurants, and customers hardly blink. Not to mention the fact that Pattaya’s three main theatres all offer a cross-dressing cabaret show which is attended dutifully by large numbers of Chinese tourists on a daily basis. How long will it be before a transgender puts up for elected office?

Assuming there any elections, of course.

Wholesome Food There’s a really good French cafe-restaurant in the soi which has the main side entrance to Tukcom in South Pattaya. La Petite Planete, absolutely non pretentious, has daily specials for around 300 baht with a wide selection as well as an a la carte menu which is also very reasonable in price. On a recent visit, we enjoyed a crab salad served with fresh French bread, John Dory fillet and French fries with dill sauce and a choice of desserts. The house wine is good value for the price. Another good eatery with reasonable prices is Palmer’s on Pattayaland Soi two and almost next door to Cheers bar. Some reasons for me to leave Pattaya.

No dead political leader has been dragged into arguments more frequently than Third Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler who committed suicide more than 70 years ago. This is true even in Thailand. There was an outcry 20 years ago because the Fuhrer was shown on a public transport advertisement in Bangkok munching a potato chip in the presence of Charlie Chaplin. Several years ago, a waxworks museum in Pattaya erected a large hoarding on Sukhumvit Road showing Adolf giving the Nazi stiff-armed salute to hundreds of motorists as they passed by. Of course, neither of these episodes reflected pronazi sentiments but rather a total ignorance of what Hitlerism meant in the 1930s and 1940s. After all, Thailand was attacked by the imperial Japanese army in World War Two and not by the latter’s ally Germany. Other examples of Nazi-style goofs in Thailand have included selling Third Reich militaria on Pattaya Beach Road and dressing up in swastika uniforms at a school parade in Bangkok. The Jewish Holocaust is mostly ignored in Asia which has its own nightmares such as the Khmer Rouge and mass starvations in China under Chairman Mao. In Europe, where Hitlerism is a more touchy subject, politicians and others try to obtain the advantage in a controversy by raking up what Adolf once said. Indeed, when anyone makes reference to the Fuhrer, one should think of Godwin’s Law which effectively states that the longer any debate goes on in the newspapers or on the internet, the closer to one hundred percent grows the likelihood that Adolf will be cited. The former London mayor, Kenneth Livingstone, recently tried to win the day by observing that Hitler was in favour of letting German Jews emigrate before, later on, he went mad and murdered several million people. Critics in UK immediately rounded on Livingstone for attempting to turn Hitler into a pro-Jewish crusader, but Ken refused to budge and claimed history was on his side. Maybe.

We also had the spectacle of another former London mayor, Boris Johnson, in the run-up to the Brexit referendum, comparing Hitler’s dream of rediscovering “the golden age of peace and prosperity under the Romans” with the European Union’s attempt to do this “by different methods”. Presumably Boris took the view that if you can show Hitler, if alive today, would have voted to remain in Europe, then any sensible person would cast his or her vote to leave. In historical terms, there is no connection between the Third Reich’s conquest of much of western Europe and the contemporary European Union. Hitler’s empire was as ragbag of different forms of administration – Denmark was left to its own devices whereas France was partitioned and parts of Poland formally annexed – but Boris would not want to know the fact that Hitler’s aim was simply to loot subservient countries in an attempt to win the war.

Perhaps Boris’ real aim was to raise Hitler’s ghost over the Brexit debate whilst painting himself as some kind of Winston Churchill.

Boris has made no secret of his liking for the wartime British leader, mentioning him at every opportunity and even writing a biography designed to impress readers with the similarities between the two.

Indeed, there are similarities. Churchill shared Boris’ liking of talking a great deal, churning out books and articles galore and even being dismissed as a rogue at some moments of his career. Not only rogue but perhaps worse. The legend persists that as sea lord in 1915 Churchill deliberately sacrificed the Lusitania to bring America into the First World War in 1915, although this did not happen for another two years. He also favoured in the Second World War murdering German leaders wholesale rather than subjecting them to the Nuremburg trials: in practice the two alternatives added up to the same thing.

Actually, Hitler’s contemporary significance is a good deal more menacing than trite historical debates. He was a true demagogue who cared little for the trappings of democracy even though he always claimed to have come to power legally and by the popular will. Today, we can see something of the same phenomenon in the popularity, selective as may be, of the new Philippine president Duterte who apparently advocates extra-judicial killings and throwing the bodies of drug dealers into Manila bay. Donald Trump in the USA may not be a paid-up fascist but his programme to ban Muslims from entering the USA and build a wall to keep out unwanted Mexicans is hardly a liberal policy. Both these latter day politicians – and they are by no means unique – mimic Hitler in appealing to gut reactions and racist ideologies. Some individuals’ urge to want a strong leader with comprehensive and simple solutions to everyday problems has a ready outlet in such policies.

Meanwhile the ghost of Hitler is by no means dead. Governments in Poland and Hungary have plainly adopted anti-immigrant policies which, in Hungary’s case, have led to the success of openly fascist political parties sporting neo-nazi uniforms at rallies. The elections for the new Austrian president also illustrate the revival of the extreme right.

These developments, as well as the growing importance of movements in England and France to shut out immigrants, undoubtedly reflect the movement of millions of people in war-torn Syria and Afghanistan in particular both as refugees and as economic migrants. In this context, the significance of Hitler is a good deal more worrying than his picture munching potato crisps on the back of a Bangkok bus.

More than 60 staff and management from Ascott properties in Bangkok have again participated in the voluntary blood donation activity, ‘Share Life, Give Blood’ at The National Blood Centre at Thai Red Cross Society. The company has held its blood donation drive each year since 2014. Over 300 blood donors attended this life saving campaign so far.

International Day of Yoga Pattaya 2016

Apart from being the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, June the 21st is fast becoming known as International Day of Yoga.

Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, in it became a record breaking vo t e w h e n e ve r y s i n g l e nation and territory accepted the proposal to introduce International Day of Yoga to the world.

In 2015 the largest ever yoga gathering took place in New Delhi and saw more than thirty five thousand devotees taking part in a yoga class led

by Narendra Modi, prime minister of India.

In Bangkok almost eight thousand joined together for an afternoon of yoga, but in 2015 the Day of Yoga was almost forgotten in Pattaya, e xc e p t by t h e d e vo t e d .

However, on the afternoon of

Tuesday the 21st June 2016 more than two hundred and fifty yoga enthusiasts, mostly locals, young and old, male and female, came together at Central Festival Pattaya Beach for a yoga class and an evening of fun.

Students with disabilities from the Father Ray Foundation took part, and showed ever yone that a disability does not stop anyone taking part in this ancient

physical, mental and spiritual practice.

Plans are already under way to make the 2017 event here in Pattaya even bigger than this year. It is hoped that hundreds, if not thousands, of not only yoga enthusiasts, but people from the whole Pattaya community will come together for a yoga class that will spread along Beach Road, the promenade walk way and also the beach, if the tide is not too high.

General Motors Thailand conducted the “Mangrove Replanting” project, in line with its CSR initiatives, at Pak Nam PraSae, Rayong.

It was attended by more than 150 people, including executives, representatives from local government, teachers and students from Wat Ta-Kien-Ngam Community School and employees including their family from GM Thailand’s manufacturing facility in Rayong.

This is the second “Mangrove Replanting” activity organizedby GM Thailand in order to restore the mangrove forest that is important to ecosystem and the environment.

The activity is aligned with the company’s purpose and value: to serve and develop communities where it lives and operates worldwide. The other purpose is to celebrate 70 years of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the throne.

Mangrove replanting serves multiple purposes. Mangroves are an important ecosystem on Thailand’s coastal areas, providing environmental and socio-economic benefits. They also help prevent coastal erosion and habitat degradation, support a healthy ecosystem for wildlife, and provide sustainable resources and livelihoods for the coastal populace. “ We expanded areas for mangrove

restoration from last year to maximize benefits for the local community. At GM, we have an ongoing commitment to help the communities where we work and live. In this case, our employees planted over 300 mangrove plants that will help contribute to a healthy coastal area for wildlife and the local populace,” said Somnuek Ngamtrakulchon, vice president of Human Resource, GM Thailand and South East Asia.

Saengjan added, “Before starting the planting process, employees and students from Wat Ta-Kien-Ngam Community School got opportunities to learn about the mangrove, benefits of the forest and how to plant mangrove trees properly. We are committed to drive employee engagement toward conservation of natural resources, to boost awareness about the local environmental concerns, and motivate planning for a sustainable future.We have a long-term follow-up plan to plant even more mangrove plants in the future.”

GM Thailand also donated One World Futbols, the ultra-durable soccer balls to Wat Ta-Kien-Ngam Community School, located in Paknamkrasae sub-district, Klaeng district, Rayong province. It is a primary school.

Approximately 600 students in the school will benefit from this donation.

Marking the 70th Anniversary of HM’s Accession to the Throne

It was indeed the tournament of the year when the management and staff of Mercure Pattaya Hotel enjoyed a friendly football competition, “Mercure Football Cup 2016”. Four teams consisting of finance and kitchen, front office and housekeeping, security and food and beverage and the engineering department battled it out with the finance and kitchen team eventually lifting the trophy after some hard-fought matches.

corners and grey pillars. On the express way the turbo kicks in and the FUN starts. Front wheel traction with tons of torque on tap. The electronic power steering is responsive. The handling, the brakes are better than the previous Civic's. This is more a driver's Honda but notwithstanding safety; active and passive top 5-star rating. As the dusk and darkness arrives, Honda's Lane Watch Camera on the driver's side adds safety watching the blind spot for other motorists and motorbikes.

The LED headlights and the powerful high beam were highly appreciated when driving back to Bangkok in the dark through the heavy rain on Kanchanaburi/Petchburi country roads. Overtaking 10-wheel trucks with confidence thanks to Honda Civic RS turbo power and those LED headlights.

This big welcoming sports family friendly bar-cum restaurant just oozes with hospitality and comfort from its extensive selection of Belgian beers, the spectacular beer mug chandelier to it’s chef/patron Peter de Kegel who is a power house of energy looking after his customers and guiding the kitchen brigade. His wife, Sukanda is also unflagging in her front of house duties making this gustatory marriage an impressive union.

The menu is a well laid out pictorial inducement of international dishes with many traditional specialities from Peter’s homeland.

value and extremely popular.

In brief, Wednesday night an International buffet is presented for only B.295 followed by a dedicated Mediterranean buffet on Thursday (B.259), Friday night (B.295) offers unlimited moules-frites or a giant mixed brochette (beef, pork, chicken and shrimps) which come with a complimentary salad bar. Saturday night is a bonanza beef fest with special premium cuts from Australia and Argentina. This is a very popular event and reservations are advised.

Sunday night is a showcase roast buffet featuring chicken, spare ribs, beef, pork and lamb for B.299.

The famous French snack Croque Monsieur (B.155) or Madam (B.175) kicks off the a la carte menu together with big crusty baguettes packed with ham, cheese, tuna mayo or even chicken curry for a tasty lunch time snack. As it was a Tuesday night when Mick and I visited, our chosen starters from the daily menu were salmon tartare (B.195) and a set of Italian antipasti. The salmon was an excellent example of this “in style” dish, the fresh salmon precisely chopped and mixed with a variety of complementary flavours to keep me interested without overwhelming the delicacy of the fish. Mick’s Italian

antipasti contained some very good and spicy style Chorizo sausage, Parma ham, olives, cheese and salad.

Belgium, of course, is famous for its beer with its nationals imbibing 150 litres per person per year. So naturally this patriotic bar is a firm proponent of their amber nectar.

Over a dozen beers are on offer, ranging from Leffe Blond or Dark, Hoegaarden –the famous white beer with an aroma of orange peel, coriander and spice, to Kasteel Bier with a whopping alcoholic content of 11 percent, to the mysterious monastery beer from the Trappist monks of Rochefort. We were imbibing the excellent house wine with a first glass of Australian Chardonnay (B.110) which we followed with a fruity French Rose (B.150) and later with a full bodied French Cabernet Sauvignon.

Look out for the “Specials Board” or ask Peter as there’s always something interesting on offer. On the night we visited it was chicken breast stuffed with Parma ham and foie gras or the famous steak tartare.

For a true taste of Belgium try the beef stew (prepared de rigueur with Belgian beer) or the chicken stew, known as Waterzooi, which actually translates as “watery mess” but, of course, is nothing of the kind as it’s a national treasure and is, in fact, chicken layered with vegetables, poached in wine and broth and then thickened with egg yolks and cream. Smooth, velvety and silky it was studded with tender morsels of mixed fish making for a memorable dish.

There’s so much on this menu from the big, beefy burgers (from B.165), the selection of pastas, especially their signature lasagna plus the interesting selection of pizzas or indeed the full Thai menu featuring over two dozen all time favourites.

Do not leave Aroi without tasting one of their delectable desserts.

Chocolate mousse oozes with decadent joy while the tiramisu and panna cotta would put a sunny smile on any sweet-toothed diner. The speciality pie the night we were there was Rhubarb Pie (B.100) now who out there could pass on that one especially accompanied by a ball of almond fudge, or Swiss chocolate ice cream?

Aroi is the friendliest pub/diner around, children are welcomed and there is even their own playground in the garden. The food is first class with Peter constantly searching out more top class products to add to

his superbly sourced ingredients.

Come here for quality produce at reasonable prices with those nightly special buffets and of course the amazing juicy steaks and the famous mussels-frites.

TWO PHUKET TOWN GEMS

The Brasserie and Raya Set the benchmark for International and Thai cuisine Bangkok Airways fly from our local Pattaya International Airport (U-Tapao) a 1 hour 20 minute flight to the holiday island of Phuket. We eschewed the beach venues and spent a few days in the island's capital, Phuket town, so we could visit two special restaurants that we had been interested in for some time. Raya is set in an old SinoPortuguese house specializing in traditional Phuket style dishes, while Brasserie is a modern restaurant serving international cuisine with Belgian flair.

First let’s journey to Raya in the heart of Phuket town still operating from its original venue in a picturesque house in the heart of the old town. The food is genuine

Sino-Thai with southern Thai dishes similar to its sister restaurant One Chun. The most popular dish is crabmeat curry in coconut milk (B.400 small and B. 600 large) which is such an iconic dish it has foodie visitors and locals beating a path to their door. The uniqueness is the mild but slow-burning effects of a pungent curry with the addition of the sweetest, most succulent taste of Phuket crab accompanied by khanon jeen – fresh noodles wrapped into shapes resembling skeins of wool.

It is addictably delicious, fragrant with kaffir lime leaves its spicy sweetness invades your senses leaving you wanting more before you have finished the bowl. The next must have Phuket derivative

taste sensation is stir fried Sa-taw beans with prawns (B.250 – B.350).

These immensely flavoured beans resonate with a pungent aroma some say could pass as methane gas – but obviously in a scrummy way! Let me reassure you that we consider these magic little beans are one of our favourite things to eat on the planet and accompanied with tossed fragrant prawns in a deeply flavoured prawn sauce it is nirvana indeed.

There is so much on this Thai “boran” menu, fried shrimp with tamarind sauce (B.600 – B.900), glass noodles with shrimp and minced pork, fish with yellow curry and coconut shoots plus the renowned and celebrated Moo Hong (steamed pork with pepper and garlic Phuket style). The Hokkien Chinese who arrived from Singapore and Malaysia introduced Muu Haawng (Moo Hong) to the repertoire of the Phuket Thai style cuisine. Here there is no use of Chinese five-spice powder, instead relying on soy sauce, sugar, garlic and black pepper to create a thick gravy with a carmelised shiny red sheen. It is again another incredible dish.

There is so much more to take pleasure in on this menu we leave it to you to come, eat and enjoy the flavours of ancient Phuket cuisine.

Brasserie is a cuisine another Continent away but the deeply flavoursome experiences are just as incredible. This is a modern bistro serving international cuisine in an ambiance of the best hospitality and geniality. Belgian Chef/Patron, Alain Tabruyn gained his gastro-spurs in Michellin starred kitchens and is producing dishes of amazing depth and expertise. Together with his charming wife Kwanjai he has carved out an establishment of top dining to equal the best. His sourcing is superb which enabled him (on our last visit) to be serve a dozen Fine de Claire oysters in their shells for an amazing B.650. We slurped and slid these beauties with drops of Mignonette (a piquant vinegar and shallot concoction) and sweet deep fried shallots for the most sensuous

of experiences. Pan fried foie gras with apple syrup definitely winked at me as did the ditto terrine with a sweet wine gelee or snails in Burgundy style but sharing a platter of polar fresh raw, tasty slimy bivalves with my husband won the day!

We followed this with a pan fried white Snapper served with the most flavourful Provencal sauce which bursted with sunny tomatoes, heaps of garlic, onions and black olives, it was exquisite. Meanwhile Mick was salivating over the finest Bouillabaisse (B.380) that had passed his lips in a long time. The broth was sublime, redolent with an almost bisque-like profundity and packed with the finest fish and shellfish. The accompanying rouille was a triumph. This traditional accompaniment is a mayonnaise made with garlic, saffron and cayenne, served with croutons. We were drinking the house wine at a mere B.400 per 75 cl carafe but don’t be fooled by the price is was a solid Chilean wine with surprising depth.

As food writers I suppose we do get inured to restaurant dining but when we are served such a stupendous meal our taste buds stand to attention and cheer for the pleasure of it all. We were told they have opened another restaurant in Cape

Panwa and at the next opportunity we will be hot footing it down there to taste more masterly cuisine.

Plastic Surgery Explained: Breast Augmentation

Quite often, with age and child breast feeding, breasts are depleted of the fatty tissue that gives them their perkiness of youth. It can be a very stressful condition for women.

Can lead to a lack of self confidence and depression in some cases.

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to enlarge or enhance the shape of a woman’s breasts through the use of artificial breast implants.

Women may choose to have breast enlargement surgery either as a reconstructive technique following mastectomy, to balance different sized breasts, or to accentuate the contours of the body. Whatever the specific purpose, women who

undergo breast enhancement can expect larger, firmer, and more visually satisfying breasts.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It is performed for a number of reasons.

After a thorough consultation with the surgeon, to evaluate the condition and the expectations of the patient blood tests will be done to ensure the patient is healthy and able to safely undergo the procedure. Chest radiographs and heart screening will also be performed.

Breast augmentation surgery begins with an incision, made either in the crease of the breast, the armpit, or the perimeter of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The placement of the incision will vary according to body type and the specifics of each breast enhancement procedure.

The plastic surgeon then creates a pocket for the breast implant; either underneath the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. Breast implants can be placed in either location, centered directly behind the nipple. Finally, the original incision is sutured.

Breast lifting is more complicated but can be performed at the same time if needed.

After Breast Enlargement Once the surgical incisions have been closed and taped, the breasts are wrapped and supported by a gauze bandage. Breast augmentation patients are fitted with a surgical bra that provides support for several weeks. Fatigue, soreness, and discomfort are postoperative conditions that are greatly reduced through medication. The swelling that follows breast enhancement surgery gradually subsides and becomes undetectable in one month’s time. Stitches are removed within seven to 10 days following breast augmentation.

Breast Enhancement Risks and Complications As with any surgical procedure, complications following breast augmentation, although rare, do exist. Capsular contracture (a tightening of the scar or capsule surrounding the breast implants) can occur following a breast augmentation procedure. If this happens, the plastic surgeon either “scores” the scar tissue, or removes the breast implant and re-inserts

another. Other breast enhancement complications include excessive bleeding and infection in the area surrounding the implants. Scars may be evident for several months, but they gradually fade. In some cases, the nipples may become hypersensitive or under-sensitive for a period after breast augmentation surgery. In rare instances, the breasts may produce milk for several days after the surgical procedure. To maximize the success of breast enlargement and minimize the risk of complication, always follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions for surgical preparation and postoperative care.

You know that blaring music, explosions, advancing age and some diseases are risk factors for hearing loss.

But did you know that over-the-counter pain relievers also may diminish your ability to hear?

Frequent use of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)) may damage the cochlea--the snail-shaped hearing mechanism in your inner ear--because the drug can reduce blood flow to the cochlea, which could result in cellular damage and cell death, according to a Harvard study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The study also noted that acetaminophen (Tylenol) may deplete the antioxidant glutathione, which protects the cochlea from damage.

It was found that women who took these pain relievers at least twice a week were more likely to experience hearing loss, and more frequent usage increased the risk by up to 24 percent. The findings are similar to a study of men and hearing loss. In that study, aspirin was also found to contribute to risk.

That does not mean you should stop popping these pills; they provide good pain relief. However, think twice

before using such medications frequently or over long periods of time. And talk to your doctor before making any changes in your medication use.

Economic Progress for Thailand

Key economic indicators of the last several weeks reflect that Thailand is making a healthy comeback. Let’s hope that continues.

During the first quarter of this year, the economy gained great momentum while registering its highest growth figures in three years.

As recently reported by the government's economic planning agency, these promising figures were greatly attributed to Thai government spending and an impressive rise in international inbound as well as domestic tourism.

According to agency board Secretary General Porametee Vimolsiri, the first quarter statistics were the highest in 12 quarters and, according to a poll recently conducted

by The Wall Street Journal, many leading economists are expecting growth of 2.8 percent.

In my previous Pattaya Today column, I mentioned that overall international tourist arrivals grew 12.5 percent in the first five months of this year, and Thai Air Asia's parent

company, Asia Aviation, as well as Bangkok Airways both posted strong first quarter growth; their profits rose a robust 16 percent to 8.95 billion baht and 15.5 percent to 7.75 billion, respectively.

Asia Aviation's numbers represented an astounding 99 percent jump in profit from 2014 to 2015. Bangkok Airways profits rose exceptionally well by 44.9 percent to 7.75 billion baht. These are incredible figures; over the first half of 2016 the travel business is growing from strength to strength.

With all these great economic statistics flying around, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) projects Thailand’s international tourist arrival growth during the 2016 low season will surpass that of a year ago by as much as 13.4 percent.

Chinese tourist arrivals are climbing higher and higher with each passing month, and are projected to grow more than 21 percent--to 2.7 million visitors--this quarter.

Other sectors whose growth is even more critical to establishing any legitimate economic recovery figures include automobile production, where output has risen sharply this year. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) revealed that production increased 25 percent in May compared to the same month last year. At the same time, car sales rose to 66,000 units in May, an impressive 15.9 percent over May 2015.

It is worth mentioning that the increase in auto sales is linked to the Thai government's economic stimulus measures.

In fact, the current vice chairman of the FTI Automotive Industry Club Surapong Paisitpattanapong was recently reported as saying that the government’s economic stimulus and investments had contributed greatly to the higher production report.

It would seem that Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and his government just may have found their footing and are actually making some positive and productive decisions in their stimulus program agenda.

In April and May, the number of cars manufactured grew to 168,400 units, representing a huge 22 percent increase due to higher domestic demand, which is another very sound and welcome economic indicator.

Bangkok Ranked Among the World’s Cheapest Office Markets While Hong Kong Soars to the Priciest by

Asia continued to dominate the list of the world’s most expensive office locations, accounting for seven of the top ten markets worldwide including China, Japan and India, according to CBRE Research’s latest semi-annual Global Prime Office Occupancy Costs survey.

Although the average rent for prime Grade A offices in Bangkok’s CBD has increased by 6.6 percent year-on-year and is among the top 25 annual rental increases, Bangkok has been ranked in 109th position out of 126 cities surveyed, becoming one of the cheapest office markets in

The service sector will show particularly strong growth in Asia as pensions and insurance products gain market share so occupancy cost growth will continue to trend upwards at a moderate pace.

“With low vacancy rates and lack of prime space in Hong Kong, this has allowed landlords to push rents upwards,” commented Dr. Henry Chin, head of Research, CBRE Asia Pacific. “Mainland Chinese financial firms have been seeking prime office space in Hong Kong to support their overseas business expansion and to cater for the clients’ needs to manage their capital outside China.”

The study also revealed that 22 markets moved more than three rankings upwards with 41 percent of these in Asia Pacific. The majority of these markets (72 percent) are not global gateway cities, indicating that as rents continue to rise in line with economic growth, cost-conscious companies are seeking space in the less expensive markets. That 41 percent of the markets moving up are in Asia Pacific indicates that the region is still growing despite the slowdown in China.

Business Operating Licenses Alcohol License and Cigarette License An alcohol license must be obtained from The Excise Department (Ministry of Finance) for any of the following purposes: • To sell alcoholic beverages • To produce alcohol and possess related equipment • To import more than one (1) litre of alcohol • To transport untaxed alcohol from a factory • To transport more than ten (10) litres of alcohol • To transport more than one (1) litre but less than ten (10) litres of alcohol between specified territories (provinces) Establishments that require liquor licenses include: • Pubs • Bars • Restaurants • Distillers, Importers, Distributors and Wholesalers • Hotels • Clubs • Theaters • Grocery and Convenience Stores • Liquor stores Alcohol license holders are prohibited to sell alcoholic beverages: – to people younger than 20 years or those people that lose consciousness when they drink; – between 12 midnight and 11am, and from 2pm to 5pm; – in close proximity to educational and religious areas; – at or within petrol stations and dormitories; – at or within public parks provided by the government for public recreation; – at or within State Public Health Service Units; – at or within public offices, except in the areas designated for the establishment of shops or clubs In case the business establishment intends to sell cigarettes, it must also apply to The Excise Department for a Cigarette License. Alcohol and Cigarette Licenses must be renewed at the end of the calendar year (December 31). However, the applications for renewal are accepted starting from the month of October.

Food License for Restaurants Opening a food business has its own set of legal considerations, which includes obtaining a variety of licenses and permits in order to start operating your business. The type of licenses to obtain depends on the type of products or services that are intended to be sold. All establishments in Thailand intending to serve or sell food are required to obtain a Food License from the municipality or district where the proposed establishment or business will be located.

The entire procedure may take about two months from the date of submission of the application. An

officer from the municipality or district shall set an appointment to inspect the location, restaurant facilities and overall sanitation to consider the approval of the license application.

Food License is valid for one year and must be renewed on a yearly basis.

Entertainment License Entertainment License must be secured by establishments or businesses who intend to provide or engage in any of the following services: • Entertainment Venues 1. A place providing a show or other activities for the purpose of entertaining customers and allowing staff to socialize with customers; 2. A place providing equipment enabling patrons to sing and allowing staff to socialize with customers; 3. A place that has no dance floor but allows customers to dance on the premises; 4. Other places with lights and sound facilities • Dance Venues such as discotheques and other venues that stage folk and country dancing • Restaurants that provide entertainment Entertainment License must be renewed at the end of the calendar year (December 31). Massage License Massage License must be obtained from the municipality or district where the proposed establishment or business will be located if the business intends to engage in a spa or massage service.

The establishment applying for this license must: • have staff/massage therapists with a valid massage certificate from a registered massage school, with a minimum of 60 hours of training; • display a sign that bears information about what medical conditions are worsened by massage; • pass the sanitation inspection conducted by the municipality officer; • have an enclosed changing room; • have first aid medicine supplies inside the premises Massage License is valid for one year and must be renewed on a yearly basis.

Is ‘Boom & Bust’ Human Nature?

Very few ever seem to learn from the enormous amount of historical evidence surrounding the economic cycles of both markets and the macro (national) economics of individual countries.

We are now witnessing the slowing of the so called ‘world engine’ of China with levels of growth down to below their stated minimum requirement of around the 7 to 7.5 percent per annum which is purported to be necessary to sustain a colossal population’s demand for jobs thereby avoiding potential social unrest.

China’s average wage increased last year by almost 50 percent and the currency continues to strengthen; that often coupled with a 120 day lead time from order to delivery of goods in Europe, for example, is taking the icing off the cake.

This same ‘pricing themselves out of the market’ has happened over centuries as the prosperity increases in particular economies, the unit labour costs increase and the once cheap haven for manufacturers become much less competitive. If you couple that with the current trend in the US, the UK and parts of continental Europe to bring manufacturing home, where possible, you have the beginnings of a trend. With the habitual inequalities in this world there will, seemingly, always be somewhere the economic powerhouses can have their products manufactured at rock bottom labour rates and business being what it is, multi nationals will have no compunction in moving operations to the latest cheap hotspot, whilst also using favourable tax regimes as bases, a fact that has resulted in much publicised criticism of many global players in recent months and prompted governments to try to take action to curb what they see as evasion. This will aim to ensure large corporates pay tax in the countries they do business and receive revenue.

With the somewhat patchy world economic recovery from the financial crisis and geopolitical tensions creating volatility in the markets, the lessons we can take from this ballet, which has been played out since time immemorial, is that there is always a ‘rise and fall’ in national economies, from the British Empire to the American version and now the Chinese rocket. No one is writing China off economically; however, the never ending meteoric growth of individual countries is unsustainable. The fact is that, in China’s case, there may be a new burgeoning middle class, nonetheless, they still have well over one billion people in poverty. As is often the case in the developing economies, there’s only a relatively small percentage of the overall population that sees significant benefit from the country’s success at a macro level, certainly in the earlier stages of development.

The cyclical nature of a particular country’s economy brings knock on effects in their market which, in turn, has similar effects on other markets and so we go on.

These swinging fortunes should lead us to ‘Economics 101’, ‘supply and demand’. When I first studied economics at my grammar school, they gave me a ‘Hanson’ textbook and on near-enough the first page ‘demand and supply’ was covered. Why have we forgotten this basic truism?

We have studied the available options for investors over many years and there are, in fact, more than a few examples of funds whose sphere of activity is based in a sector where demand far exceeds supply and surprise, surprise they have been able to maintain consistently decent results throughout the whole financial malaise of the last 5 to 7 years and can attribute more than a little of their success to Mr Hanson’s first lesson.

Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB) has begun the construction of a new campus in the city of Chiangmai.

The new campus, Singapore International School Chiangmai (SISB Chiangmai) held a foundation stone laying ceremony presided

over by Putipong Sirimatya, vice governor of Chiangmai Province.

SISB Chiangmai is the first Singapore International School to be launched in Northern Thailand. The new campus spans 5-rai with a capacity for up to 750 students ages 2 to 12 years old (nurser y-kindergarten to primary level). SISB Chiangmai will include a 25-metre swimming pool, indoor multi-purpose hall, canteen, library, music room, science lab, arts and crafts room, computer lab and hard court, with full completion expected by academic year 2016 2017.

Business News Emirates Airlines and Tourism Authority of Thailand sign new agreement to boost tourism to Thailand The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Emirates Airline, UAE’s leading airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Bangkok which aims to utilise the Airline’s global network to further boost inbound tourist arrivals to Thailand by focusing on the growth of key niche markets and luxury destinations within the Kingdom.

Under the MoU, Emirates together with TAT will put into effect a range of joint promotions to mutually increase tourism and visibility for Thailand through the Emirates Airline Global Network.

The new parts distribution center is almost three times as large as the previous facility. Youth Focus The Marks of a Quality School

by Jay Chambers One thing that parents, teachers, students and even principals around the world have in common is the wish to be part of a quality school.

They may want different things from such a facility, yet the yearning to be part of something special holds them all. A quality school is not something that appears everywhere at the same time.

It is a place that comes all too rarely in every country and indeed, the countries’ needs differ enough to make such a special place a “diamond in the rough.” They differ so much, in fact, that for the sake of time this article will focus mainly on what characteristics make a quality school in Thailand.

Many would argue that there are no set attributes for what is considered a “good” school, but quite a few authors of previously written articles would disagree. An Ashoka Contributor (Ashoka “is the largest network

of social entrepreneurs worldwide”) reported that a highly rated school would have, “Supportive environmental conditions.”

This can mean anything from: Do the students have safe transportation to and from school, to: Are the students happy with their teacher(s)?

Do the students feel secure in their educational experience and have confidence in those providing said experience?

This leads us to a quote from Ross Morrison McGill (Guardian Teacher of the Year in Secondary School in London 2004) in his own

article about outstanding schools: Staff relished working, and I loved Monday mornings again. I couldn’t get to school quick enough. In short, staff worked together and supported each other.

Students enjoyed their studies, coupled with an array of enrichment opportunities and great successes.

In order to provide the type of educational experiences that students desire, teachers need to be happy and confident in themselves. They need to have respect for the director and confidence in his/her vision

and abilities, along with the support staff that keeps the school running. They need to have faith that their past degree(s) and educational experiences are up for the task ahead of them, along with the focus on teaching that can only come if they are certain their visa and immigration status is on firm footing.

So you see, there is no one thing that makes up a quality school. It is a web

If students see how dedicated their teachers are, they are more likely to put forth extra effort in their studies and competitions because knowledge has been imparted to them in ways that motivated them to learn.

According to the Ashoka Contributor this should lead to, “A school-wide climate of high expectations.”

That “climate of high expectations” is hard to miss, especially for parents. Parents send their children to what they think is a high quality school and hope that their high expectations match that of the school. Then they will do their best to motivate their children to work hard and the teacher(s) to teach well. Good parents are pearls beyond price. They may spend their time helping out with homework at home or even volunteer in the classroom. The enrollment of

their children alone adds to the budget of the school and may allow the facilities to be modernized to high standards.

With good communications, parents, the teacher(s) and the school make an unbeatable team that can’t help but succeed in their primary goal: to educate the students of that school.

The marks of a quality school are many and varied.

The school must have an atmosphere of learning that comes from students ready and willing to learn. It must have qualified and dedicated teachers who enjoy their work and focus upon that work each and every day. A quality school is led by a director or principal who holds respect and a vision that those who attend the school support.

And last but definitely not least, a quality school has parents who are willing to work both with the school and their children to help ensure that the “climate of high expectations” that first drew them to the school in the first place doesn’t fade away.

The usual view is that a British ship, ss Californian, lay nearest to the Titanic as she sank and yet failed to heed her distress calls. Or, at least, he could have roused his radio operator to check out any nearby happenings.

Did the Samson or the Californian see the Titanic?

whose faint masthead light could be seen by passengers of the doomed Titanic. Indeed, some of the lifeboats even tried to row in the direction of the light. But in vain. As it turned out, those who were saved from the Titanic were rescued by the Carpathia which raced through the night for 58 miles to reach the wreck site.

There have always been those, defenders of Captain Lord, who refuse to accept that the Californian was the mystery ship which lay near the Titanic. In 1962, on the 50th anniversary of the sinking, a BBC radio programme introduced a new suspect – the Norwegian sealer the Samson. A transcript of the diary of the first officer Henrik Naess surfaced which seemed to implicate his ship and, by implication, let the Californian off the hook.

According to Naess, the Samson was in the area of the sinking on the night of April 14-15 1912 and the crew saw a big ship with bright lights firing rockets. Since the Samson was on an illegal sealing expedition in territorial waters, her officers feared that the mystery vessel might be the American coastguard and

so they fled. The implication is that the Samson might have saved many of the Titanic’s crew and passengers if she had chosen to get involved.

Naess’ diary states, “I was on duty that evening, but I sat with the captain and drank a rum toddy and smoked an evening pipe. Just before midnight I went on deck ... and noticed two big stars in the sky far away to the south ... I thought it might have been American sea hunters.

The watchman on the bridge shouted that it was not stars but lanterns. And he told us he saw a lot of lights.

Then suddenly some rockets appeared but they soon went out and it became dark.”

It was only later when the Samson docked in Iceland that her crew learned of the Titanic disaster. But there are several difficulties with believing Naess’ bizarre tale. He actually wrote his diary entry some months after the Titanic sank and the disaster occurred in mid-ocean, nowhere near anybody’s territorial waters and far from any seal fishing possibilities.

of Naess’ testimony shows that the Samson was hundreds of miles from the Titanic’s reported position. Shipping records show that the Samson was docked in Iceland on April 6 and again on April 20: it was absolutely impossible for a six knot ship like the Samson to have been within ten miles of the Titanic on April 14-15 and then made it back to Iceland in less than a week.

Nobody knows what made officer Naess concoct his tale.

He died in the late 1920s so it was not possible to ask him by the time the story surfaced in the 1960s.

Naess may have seen something from the deck following his boozing session with the captain but it certainly had nothing to do with the Titanic. None the less books were being written as late as the late 1990s suggesting

that the Samson was the real mystery vessel which lay in between the Titanic and the Californian. Naturally defenders of Captain Lord have seized the opportunity to cast the net of suspicion well away from their hero. But the Naess diary is a red herring and a total irrelevance.

Captain Lord has suffered many indignities over the years. He has been accused of being drunk on the night of the Titanic disaster, absolutely untrue, and he is badly misrepresented in the 1958 movie A Night to Remember where he is depicted as being more interested in sugar in his tea rather than in mysterious rockets reported by his officers.

None the less, the Californian was the ship that stood still and did nothing whilst 1,500 people drowned or froze to death.

Mulholland drives to victory!

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Post Brexit golf just got 6 percent more expensive in Pattaya as the UK has pulled out of the European Union and the pound sterling took a big hit. We hit 46.5 (pound to the baht) at one stage on Thursday but when those yellow TT exchange booths rolled down their shutters for the night, the bounce was up to 48 baht to the pound. I believe most British expat golfers here would still say we are getting a great deal on our golf in Pattaya!

Green Valley is returning to greatness, today the lads reported near perfect conditions even though we only had a small turnout of just 12 golfers.

First off, the near pin was awarded to Capt. Phil who was the only bloke in his group to even hit the green! The 20-footer could not be negotiated (caddy no good!) so Phil settled for a tap in par. Mr. Hynard and Mr. Mulholland both had sweet 38’s on the card but Mr. Cusatis had other ideas. One shot better found Corey the winner as he returns to his winning form of last month with a strong 39 to close out the field.

Everything was dropping! We had a bit of a rain delay after the 14th, the Beautiful Beast, but not before my partner Bob had an eagle chip in from 110 yards! It was that kind of a crazy afternoon of golf! The weather cleared and we finished the round in perfect, but a bit wet, conditions.

On the 17th, the last par 3, it was Capt. Phil who once again had his name on the sheet. Phil was about 24 feet from the pin, but when Bob’s ball came to a stop, we could see he had him beat by a good stride. Congrats go to Mr. Mulholland for the near pin, and for carrying my 97 kilo frame for the last 17 holes. I still had one drive left to play, so on the 18th there was no choice and it somehow got us halfway to the hole. A tighter contest I have not had in ages as our joint 62.4 scores had us share the win, and rightly so with two pars on the last!

On the first tee box at Wangjuntra Highlands

Peter Hynard, Corey Cusatis and Bob Mulholland back in TGC Wangjuntra Highlands – Two-man Scramble - White Tees Two or three times a year we book an adventure trip out here to the middle of nowhere at Wangjuntra Golf Park. There are three 18-hole golf courses at this “Golf Park”, the Valley, the Jungle and our task today, the Highlands. Quoting the great Leonard Nimoy, “It’s golf Jim, but not as we know it” would be a quite fitting description here, hence the scramble format. This is an unfair and extreme golf course, which is why we love it!

The complex sits on a thousand acre plot, up in the mountains and how the heck they built (and maintain) the three courses is some achievement. The size of some of the greens are just crazy huge and 100 foot putts are not uncommon. We found the course today to be wet, and the remains of a few scorched greens still linger from the searing sun and droughts of the springtime.

Never mind, it is still very playable, very enjoyable and the looks on the faces of the first-timers priceless!

There was just a 12 man road trip today but the 90-minute drive put none of us off. We actually found a better way to come back as there is a cut through about five clicks from the exit gates then left at the traffic light to the 3245 and you end up on the 3027 with Pattana on your right. We reckon it saves about 10 clicks and it is a good road.

Bob Mulholland and I ended up playing with co-winners Mark Bamber and David Hewson, so it was an interesting

Laem Chabang B & C – Stableford – White Tees This is one of Pattaya’s best golf courses and a trip to Laem Chabang always brings out the best in us. Bigger numbers today saw a full field of 20 golfers hit the links. A great course, a great deal and great condition all make Laem Chabang one outstanding golf venue. We can get here from TGC in just 28 minutes, such is the benefit of Highway 7. How much longer this link will be free and how much the powers that be will charge at those soon to be opened toll booths is anyone’s guess. Right now we are getting away with it but certainly by high season the penny will drop, literally.

This Jack Nicklaus course was in great shape and the recently remodelled facilities are fantastic value for just 2,300 baht all in.

Our man in Hong Kong, Barry Collier, swung to near pin honours and good to get Barry back after four long weeks of slaving over a corporate jet. Fred Birch has been gone for far too long as well, so good to see Fred back in action and returning to the podium again. Yasu Higuchi is another Japanese visitor joining us on a regular basis, and 34 at this course is good going indeed.

There’s that Scotsman once again, and Friday ends a terrific week of winning ways for Bob Mulholland, who dominated golf this week at The Golf Club. Bob’s 39 points were never in doubt for a great win and a win on Wednesday and second on Monday cap off some strong play. Nice shooting Bob! PSC Tropical Golf From BJ's

by Derek Brook Pattana (Stableford) This course is becoming one of our regular courses, we seem to fit it in most months at least once. It always is in good condition and during the recent drought it always appeared in good condition and had grass on it. When we arrived on this day it had obviously had some rain because the rule was carts on the cart path.

So I took a cart and luckily they gave me a flag so I could take the cart in the rough. This

being over mature does have some advantages, but sadly not many. So after being told we were to play the B and C nines, off we went and as all who play there know B1 is a difficult drive, especially when it is your first drive, with water on both sides and ahead. So as I do not like to disappoint people, great drive, straight into the water.

The course was fine, a bit wet as carts were not allowed, but not too wet. The rough was a bit damp but no big pools of water; all in all pretty good.

The greens were fine, a bit soft but they ran true and the only real problem we met was the wind got up at various times and we had some rain, but not a lot. We moved along well on both nines and soon were back in the changing room.

Soon changed, and what a fine changing facility, it was time to go back.

We got back to BJ’s nice and early and so it was soon into the results. The winner on the day was Tom Herrington with 36 points ahead of Steve Truelove in second with 34

Local Sports Traffic Jam at the top of the Leader Board but Ever Green Ebbi takes the prize

Growling Swan – Stableford Twenty five eager golfers gathered in Soi Chaiyapoon keen to take advantage of the 1,650 baht green fee, caddy and cart deal on offer at such a good keep you honest type course.

Climatically it was a balmy type of day with little or no breeze to help the comfort level. This course (as always) was in good condition and with the usual tricky type greens, which were a little on the slow side, assisted in contributing to good scores.

Two flights today, with scratch to 17 being or A Flight and 18 plus for the B Flight. With all the novelty holes in play.

In the A Flight, we had four golfers tied with 38 points bringing the count back into play.

Unfortunately with only three podium placings one golfer missed out on the prize money. The four were Tom McMahon, Bill Steinmann, Ebrahim and Sal Brizzi. Tom McMahon was the unfortunate golfer to miss out.

B Flight saw popular golfer Lorraine Percy take out her first win with us with Fred (Boris) Cuypers, and Geri Crilly filling the spots on the podium.

Long First Putt 9th - Gerry Arthur 18th - Mike Gosden For was again let from his chain by Alex Field to collect for the needy in Pattaya. All golfers are thanked for their generosity.

To make the occasion special, the venue this day was Burapha – a fair test of medal play skills. Due to low season and travel, we had just 12 golfers show up to give their best. Everyone had a good chance. Burapha is getting into the local price wars by giving Sports Day prices all week long. The Tropical golfers don't play this course often so the anticipation was high. Recent rains have finally started to green up the courses, and Burapha was in good condition. Playing the A and B links off white tees, the layout is interesting with a good mix of long and short holes. Some

Bangpra Stableford White Tees Twelve players returned to a course which had been showing excessive wear and tear during the dry spell hoping that the recent rains had given it the kiss of life only to find the patient still in the intensive care ward but displaying signs of life. Rain can only do so much for the course which was still ragged in places and needs a bit of TLC. The scores reflected the condition of the course and Sean Murphy playing his second last game before his return home managed a win with four players ending up on 30 and the unlucky ones not securing a place were Peter Habgood and Tony Robbins. Only two near pins were won again reflecting the challenges.

Results: 1st - Sean Murphy (15) 33 points 2nd - Mike Lloyd (16) 30 oco 3rd - Les Hall (23) 30 points Near Pins: Jimmy Carr and Neil Carter Royal Lakeside Blue Tees Stableford A disappointing turnout of only eight players to this prestige club with its commanding setting, layout and fast putt able greens which should attract bigger fields.

However on analysis the following points came up, the combination of a 1000 baht green fee (in low season), the distance, the roadworks, heavy rain overnight and playing off the blue tees deterred a few although five of our regulars did take off for the UK this week.

Those who are not deterred by the green fee (600 baht more than Greenwood which is in excellent condition) love coming here as it is usually in great condition. Today the greens were terrific 11 on the stimpmeter, fast and true, unfortunately a few of the fairways were scruffy and a number of bunkers had not been repaired by the caddies.(Players, please make your caddies rake the bunkers). Also the regulations that only permit the caddie to drive the buggy means that the golfer has to put up with trainee racing car drivers who dash to your ball with no consideration of where other golfers are playing their shot and finally with so many areas restricted to the buggies a golfer spends a large fee to walk and have his golf bag chauffeured around the course. We started on 10, always difficult with a challenging par 5 followed by a cute par 4 with a water carry to the green. Sean Murphy and Jimmy Carr started well with 17 points each on the first nine but faded at the end and Tony Robbins, after a disappointing 14 points on the first nine, romped home with 20 points on the second nine to take 1st place. Neil Carter shrugging off a poor run of form took 2nd with 33 points and Sean Murphy in his last game this holiday edged out Jimmy Carr for 3rd on count back with 31 points . Sad to say, Skinny Newton, after his amazing 43 points last week, came last. light drizzle accompanied the golfers for a few holes but not enough to stop or even slow down play, and it soon moved away. Someone in the area got wet but nothing was going to spoil this day. When the final putts fell it was back to BJ's Lodge for the announcement.

The course is recovering well from the dry spell and has good grass coverage on fairways but areas frequented by the buggies are taking longer to recover, but this did not spoil our enjoyment of the course. Many players were heard to comment on how good the greens were, being closely mowed and holding their line on the putts. The heavy rains prior to us teeing off resulted in many of the bunkers turning into water hazards with lost balls in bunkers being the order of the day. Geoff Parker is back in the winning spot and consolidating his spot near the top of GOM as is Jimmy Carr. The par threes were challenging with only two golfers getting to put their names on the markers.

You & Your Pets Kvetch, Kvetch, Kvetch Does your cat bitch much? Not in so many words, of course, but in the form of constant meowing? Sometimes you should pay attention to her plaints because they might be signs of something serious. Or not.

For example, cats often meow when they are ill.

How do you know? You don’t. But if she’s crying constantly, take her to your veterinarian for a thorough checkup. That’s a particularly good idea if Ms Kitty is older; she might have an overactive thyroid or a kidney disease.

On the other hand, Felix may just be vocalizing because he wants attention. Maybe he wants to play or be petted or just noticed. However, it may not be a good idea to give in to such demands lest they become habitual. So don’t be too ready to respond to meows. Just walk away without a word. That said, do give him attention when he’s quiet, and spend time with him every day, playing, petting, grooming, etc.

Another common reason for meowing is hunger—or at least anticipation of being fed. Cats often start making noise when it’s close to meal time or perhaps anytime you walk into the kitchen. That

Charlie

Charlie is a special case and needs to go to a new home on his own. He is deaf, blind in one eye and has only a little vision in the other.

He will not get on with any other cats and dogs and so must be an only pet. He loves people though and just loves to nip your toes !

Madge

Madge is a very friendly girl who loves to be stroked and cuddled.

She is around six years old now but still runs about the house and garden like a young kitten. She looks a bit mean in this photo but a very loving cat.

Felix

Felix is the "Big Boss" of the household and was our first Thai rescued cat. He is now nearly 10 years old but is still in prime condition.

He is an excellent hunter, keeping the garden free of snakes and vermin.

Zero

Zero is an old timer and spends most of her time chilling out in the garden in some shady spot.

She loves her food and will run at a great pace as soon as she hears a tin of tuna being opened.
