Falling pound woes

E

uropean expats in Pattaya are bemoaning the recent falls in their currencies which are increasing the cost of living and even threatening their visa renewals.

The worst problems are being experienced by Brits who have seen their purchasing power shrink by more than 20 percent since the Brexit referendum which effectively cancelled permanent British membership in the European Union. But the euro has also declined, thus making life more difficult for many German, French and Dutch expats.

A group of British men in their 60s and 70s told Pattaya Today that they depend on pension income from UK to renew their retirement visas. Bill Browning said, “I need an income of 60,000 baht a month to qualify for my one-year retirement visa, but the recent exchange rate deterioration means I am now short. I simply don’t have the cash reserves over here to make up the difference.” He added that he had come to

live in Thailand in 1998 when the exchange rate was over 90 baht to the pound. It is now only half that.

Other expats noted that inflation here in Thailand is gathering pace even as the value of their overseas income is falling. A Brit who preferred not to be identified said, “In theory, the fall in the pound should mean that foreign goods in the supermarkets are cheaper, but this never happens in practice. He also pointed to the recent increases demanded by motorbike taxi drivers and hikes in the cost of meals even in modest restaurants. He explained that he needed urgent surgery and had been given quotes of around 500,000 baht. “Of course, I’m not insured, as the companies don’t want to take responsibility for old age pensioners.”

An immigration spokesperson said the bureau was aware of the problems being created by the strong baht but observed that exchange rates are always in flux. There are several ways to qualify for a one-year retirement

visa. Some pensioners keep 800,000 baht in a special account which they never touch. Others rely on a letter from their embassy to confirm their home country monthly income is at least 60,000 baht. It is also possible to mix the two routes – an income of less than 60,000 baht a month but supplemented by cash reserves in a Thai bank to make up the shortfall.

An independent financial adviser said, “Many expats here are faced with rising costs against a falling exchange rate. Some are even

considering returning to their base country, although this can be difficult for those who have cut ties with their mother country as they may experience difficulty resuming residential status.” He added that returning exiles usually needed an immediate address in the home country and proof of registration with a doctor. British expats who are deemed “non-ordinarily resident” in the UK would need to sort out their tax status with the revenue department.

Robbery victim shot

Two people were injured near the Roiraan construction site, Pattanakarn Road, after two male teens on a motorbike forced them to hand over their valuables. One of the intended victims Nirut tried to stop the unwelcome advances and was hit in the face with

a gun whilst his companion Tanaporn was shot in the shoulder.

The victims lost a quantity of cash and two mobile phone. Staff from the nearby site contacted the police to come quickly, but the villains had disappeared by the time help was at hand.

Students learn safe driving Sattahip police hosted a meeting for local teachers and students to learn more about the hazards of poor driving standards which lead to nasty accidents. Local Mayor Pairoj Malakul Na Ayutthaya said traffic accidents were a growing and serious problem often brought about by driving too fast or being ignorant of traffic signs or rules of the road. He added that the overstretched police force did not have enough manpower to enforce the traffic laws everywhere and said he would put his trust in training the drivers of tomorrow to improve the appalling traffic accident statistics which showed far too many deaths in the area under his jurisdiction.

Police arrest Nigerian and his Thai girlfriend

Police officers patrolling Thepprasit Road saw a Toyota driving suspiciously, and then saw the passenger discard trash from the window. When the cops checked trash, they found a bag with 200 grams of crystal meth. The Toyota sped away but police called for a road block that soon stopped the suspect at the intersection of Thepprasit and Sukhumvit Roads.

The driver and passenger were identified as Nigerian Ukwuani Ogochukwu Mathias, 34, and Thai Samorn Sutthakaew, 31. A third passenger was their year-old daughter.

The suspects denied owning the drugs.

Robber seeks to justify crime

Driver loses control of BMW A BMW traveling down Beach Road jumped the curb, crossed the footpath, hit a man sitting on a bench, and then landed on the beach across from the Pattaya Police station. Pol. Capt. Tanin Tanphai, deputy inspector of Pattaya City Police, said the driver, identified as 27-year-old Soravit Thityankul from Chonburi, had been drinking. The driver admitted that after a drinking session with his girlfriend he fell asleep behind the wheel and lost control of his car.

Saravut Boonkhong, 37, was sitting on the beach bench he was struck by the wayward car; he was rushed to Banglamung Hospital.

Swedish man dies bizarrely

Swedish citizen Sten Goran Lundholm, 62, was found dead sitting in his condo bathroom with his head in a bucket and a golf bag on his neck. Police said the man had been dead about six hours and that the body had been discovered by a bar owner who noticed that her very regular customer had gone

missing. Apparently, the expat had left a note explaining why he had decided to take his own life. The circumstances of the death are certainly unusual but the authorities are hopeful that the customary autopsy will determine what exactly has gone on here.

A thief robbed a woman and threatened her with a gun in front of the Paradise Hill 2 Estate, explaining that he had just come out of prison and had no cash whatsoever. Napaporn Worabut, 29, told police she was riding her bike when she noticed a suspicious character coming alongside. The stranger then produced a handgun and ordered her to hand over all her valuables. He managed to escape with 10,000 baht and a smartphone worth 15,000 baht. The incident might have been even nastier except for the intervention of a security guard who came to investigate and forced the villain to flee.

Man shot and killed on Soi Boonark

Twenty-year old Rachan Kaewduang was shot and killed on Soi Boonark. He had been seen arguing with an unidentified man who shot him in the forehead. Pol. Capt. Asawin Chanthor, deputy inspector of Banglamung police, said officers rushed to the scene and found the victim dead.

News Rains on the plains

Pattaya businesses say they are much relieved that the rainy season this year has produced an abundance of water which has helped to fill local reservoirs to about 60 percent. Following the El Nino drought earlier in the year, the new La Nina has brought a watery result on most days in the past two months. Hotels in particular are rejoicing that the recent rains have removed the need for the provincial waterworks authority to reduce pressure in the pipes. The boast now is that Pattaya has enough reserves to help out in other areas, including Laem Chabang, but there is no guarantee water shortages won’t reoccur if next year’s rainy season is disappointing.

Fish prices rise short-term

TAT reveales 17 most favourite of the “2016 Peoples Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) today announced the 17 most popular tourist attractions and activities in Thailand, as well as fruits and dishes among Chinese tourists.

H.E. General Tanasak Patimapragorn, deputy prime minister of Thailand, and H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports, presided over the “2016 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” ceremony at the Henri Dunant Hall, Royal Bangkok Sports Club.

The contest was a continuation of a project launched successfully in 2015 to enhance Thailand’s tourism profile and brand image via social-media networks, which are frequented by millions of Chinese every day. It also helps support the many Thai tourism products and services seeking more exposure in the Chinese market.

TAT organised the voting campaign in partnership with Tencent, which owns a number of Chinese online channels such as WeChat (570 million users/day), QZone (330 million users/ day), QQmessenger (27 million users/ day) and Tencent News (27 million users/day).

Chinese who have travelled to Thailand were invited to vote via the website www.peopleschoiceawardsthailand. com between June 7-19, 2016, in 17

categories such as tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, Thai food, spas, shopping malls, golf courses, etc. A total of 3,239,362 people participated in the voting.

They were enticed to vote by the offer of a lucky draw prize of a five-day package tour of Bangkok and surrounding areas for two people, as well as two round-trip tickets between China – Samui Island (1 prize), China – Krabi (1 prize), China – Sukhothai (1 prize) and China – Chiang Rai (1 prize) as well as over 100 other prizes.

In 2015, Thailand attracted 7.9 million Chinese tourists, generating an estimated 376 billion baht in revenue for the Thai economy, up respectively 71 percent and 87 percent over 2014.

In 2016, TAT expects Chinese tourists will total 10.5 million with an estimated expenditure of 509 billion Baht.

New legal chief in post Up to 300 fishing boats have been forced to stay onshore after recent storms, originating with strong winds over Vietnam, whipped up the sea in and around Sattahip bay. Waves reached over three metres in some areas and small vessels of all types were advised not to set sail. Many fishermen complained that their income had been badly hit by the disruption whilst local storekeepers said the price of fish in the markets had shot up in the short term. However, the situation had returned to normal by the end of the first week of July.

The new military-appointed panel now running Pattaya has appointed Setthaporn Boonsawat to be head of the local authority’s legal department. He said he expected to continue in his new, unelected position for two years and would be especially active in preventing encroachment on public property, tackling flood-related issues and dealing with people who were trading illegally, including street hawkers and foreigners without permits.

He also pointed to the policy of the Chonburi governor to enforce the rules appertaining to the organization of local beaches.

Night Club busted Wife stabs unfaithful for underage patrons German husband

Kanchayakorn Chantawong, 43, was arrested by Tourist Police on Walking Street after the Petchaboon native stabbed her German husband, 49-year-old Joern Guenter Vonhedens Troem. The victim was rushed to Pattaya Memorial Hospital with knife and scissor wounds.

Kanchayakorn said she was angry because her husband was having an affair. She said she takes care of him and she even works nights to send money to their child, while her husband doesn’t work.

DJ Pub on Third Road was raided by Pattaya Police who discovered more than 60 underage imbibers in the club, according to Pol. Capt. Akhom Wongsamart. Of the 100 teenagers found, 60 were age 15 to 20; 10 customers had no ID card.

The club allegedly had no business license and was charged with selling alcohol to youth and allowing them in the premises.

Club owner Nattaporn Aornsee, 27, was held for questioning.

Elusive teens apprehended

Police arrested two suspects who eluded a check point on Third Road. Motorbike driver Phermsarp Butsa, 18, and passenger Chakrit Ampaicha, 19, appeared suspicious and were asked to pull over, according to Deputy Inspector Captain Wuttikorn Plordprong. The suspects sped off but were apprehended in front of Numchai Home Electrics on Sukhumvit Road.

Police claim that the two discarded three cigarette packets as they made their escape. In the packets was crystal meth, which the suspects denied any knowledge of.

Manta Kids Swimming Academy opens

Gut-buster breakfast Over a hundred cafes and restaurants in Pattaya offer the full English breakfast, usually on an all-day basis. It has been a staple offering worldwide for as long as anyone can remember and apparently made its first appearance in an English cookbook of 1861. Its popularity is almost without limits and the dish is available not only in restaurants and greasy spoon cafes but in five-star hotels and luxury cruises. It is even doled out to bleary-eyed passengers at the tail end of overnight flights to Manchester and London.

The ingredients It is known as the full English – a combination of bacon, sausage and egg with ad hoc additions of baked beans, black pudding, cooked or tinned tomato, mushrooms, fried bread, hash browns, ketchup, brown sauce, buttered toasts, dollops of jam, and a cup of tea. Sometimes there are variants according to size such as “small English” or “big English” or even “very big English”. A huge breakfast may be a “gut-buster” or, less happily, “the cholesterol special”. One restaurant in Pattaya even said it would refund your money if you could manage two “gut-busters” one after the other. The owner had to withdraw the offer after losing a lot of hard cash.

Health issues It is amazing that the full English remains as popular as it is in this health-conscious age. A recent report by the World Health Organization’s international agency suggested that processed meats such as sausage are in the same nominal category of carcinogens as asbestos, alcohol, tobacco and arsenic, albeit with lower levels of hazard. The findings a few weeks ago received global publicity but resounded particularly strongly in UK where the battles between health and indulgence continue unabated, with the latter usually winning. You can always start living healthily tomorrow!

Yummy seafood soon Pattaya tourist authorities and the local hoteliers’ association are organizing the Pattaya Seafood Festival on Beach Road during the weekend of July 29-31. Booths selling fresh seafood dishes and delicacies at bargain-basement prices together with chef representation from some of the resort’s finest hotels and resorts. The Seafood Festival is part of the local authority’s ongoing efforts to create a positive image for the city.

Korean music featured at Central Festival

Young Lock Jo, director of the Korean International School of Bangkok, led students in performing Korean music at Central Festival Pattaya Beach. The school aims

to promote Korean culture, dance, K-pop, Taekwondo and Korean musical instruments to Thai locals and tourists.

Health hypocrites The British, at home and abroad, are well-known for their personal ambiguities. Prime-time television in UK accords equal prominence to exercise machines and physical prowess as to belly-bulging cooking shows specializing in chocolate fudge cake and the various ways of frying fish and chips. Gym memberships sell very well in Britain although some practitioners have been observed creeping out at lunchtime to order a mammoth burger with extra cheese or an outsize sandwich squelched with mayo. Urged to eat at least five portions of fruit or vegetables every day by their doctor, some Brits seek refuge in five portions of French fries or multiple banana splits.

Back to the ’70s Processed meat has been the butt of comedy since a Monty Python sketch of 1970 which revolved around Spam, the canned meat that gave its prewar name to a newer generation’s unwanted email. Based partly on ham, spam today is sold in 100 countries and, in 2007, was applauded for the seventh billion tin actually sold since its first appearance in 1937.

Whether this total included the countless tins at the bottom of the Atlantic, thanks to Hitler’s submarines, is simply not known. All diet sheets tell you to avoid spam. Not only is it fattening, but it’s full of salt.

Newspaper campaigns British newspapers love to join the bandwagon to frighten the masses. The tabloid daily The Sun recently proclaimed below a front page photograph of the sausage, “Banger out of order”. Another paper called to full English “the killer in the kitchen”. Almost every health column in periodicals is forever harping on about the evils of fatty breakfast meals, urging instead a return to an apple, a crispbread and some unsweetened porridge. Whether these campaigns are successful is another matter entirely.

Gallows humour But warnings seem to bring out the devil in people. One contributor to a national website remarked, “My work is very stressful so I often grab fast food. I do no exercise, always travel by tube or bus and am admittedly rather obese.” He added that he intends to go down fighting: with a bacon sandwich in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other as he sings the national anthem. Another wit commented, “If I had known that smoking was only as dangerous as eating sausages, I would never have given up cigarettes.” The same guy read that red wine is actually good for you and has begun consuming a bottle and a half every night. He believes that the roads to good health can be a most inebriated one.

The alternative Mind you, the Continental breakfast isn’t a whole lot better for you: all that butter, croissants, pastries and French bread. A recent hospital survey that changes in diet could prevent 9 percent of all cancer cases was read as meaning that it could not in 89 percent. Another poster wrote, “I don’t care anyway. We all have to die of something sooner or later.” Of course, he is right about sooner.

Pattaya Today also spoke to several expats who had decided to quit Pattaya and return to their home countries to live. “Actually, I could afford to go on living here, but Pattaya has changed such a lot,” said Londoner Dave Roberts. “The roads are choked with Chinese tour buses and tourism as a whole is being ruined by constant police raids on licensed premises. I think Pattaya has lost its tag as Fun City.” He added that he also owned a condominium which

he was unable to sell but had managed to rent out on a long term basis.

But other commentators believe the fundamental issue is that Pattaya is maturing.

“Thailand is now part of the ASEAN Economic Community,” said a spokesperson for the Tourist Authority of Thailand. “The country is no longer just looking to Europe, Australia and America but has increasing links with neighbouring countries in the Pacific rim region. In due course, ASEAN will

become a free trade area with much greater movement of populations between the 10 member states.” She also pointed to the huge potential in the Chinese market and the research which suggested that about two million Chinese had already visited Thailand but that 100 million looked forward to doing so.

Moreover, the majority of European expats who have settled in Thailand show no desire to move. Many have Thai partners on a long term basis, others have rental income and still others took

the precaution of moving funds here before the recent currency mayhem. “In any case,” said a local travel agent, “what goes down will surely come up again. After all, the pound was worth just 40 baht in the early 1990s.” He predicted that the pound in particular will rise strongly once the initial confusion surrounding Brexit is resolved. “Pattaya is still a great place to live and Thai cities are amongst the world’s most popular areas for visitors from the five continents.”

Thailand to host Miss Universe China 2016 finalists in October The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Miss Universe China Organisation have entered into an agreement to bring 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016 pageant to Thailand where they will be filmed for a week in October as they undergo various activities in the Kingdom.

The high-profile ceremony took place on June 29 in Shanghai, the People’s Republic of China and was presided over by Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, deputy prime minister of Thailand. The agreement was signed by Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT governor, and Yue-Sai Kan, the official licensee for China Miss Universe Organisation.

Yuthasak said, “ This agreement forms part of the TAT’s broader initiative to promote Thailand as a women friendly destination. For the Chinese market in particular, the hosting of 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016

will help attract more affluent women travellers from China to Thailand, especially after they see how the contestants have come to enjoy discovering the many amazing experiences in Thailand.”

The 16 finalists will experience a variety of activities in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai. During the final round in November, viewers of the pageant broadcast will have the opportunity to see the finalists discover the many amazing stories in Thailand and take part in charitable and social responsible activities.

The finalists will also take part in fashion shows and pose for a photo-shoot in Thai traditional dress.

They will be joined by Yun Fang Xue, who was crowned Miss Universe China 2015, and the Miss Universe China Organisation’s team members, totalling 40 participants.

Their activities in Thailand will be shared live through

the Miss Universe China Organisation’s website and Weibo and Wechat accounts.

In addition, the accompanying press and fan members from China will also be reporting their movements in various other online and offline media outlets across China.

In 2015, Thailand attracted a total of 7.9 million Chinese tourists

and generated 376 million baht in revenue for the Thai economy, representing an increase of 71.14 per cent and 87 percent on 2014, respectively. Based on a survey conducted between January and June 2015, about 55.73 percent of Chinese visitors to Thailand are freeindependent travellers (up 81.20 percent year-on-year) and the remaining 44.27 percent are group tourists.

Chinese tourists spent on average 46,363 baht per person per trip. Their popular destinations in Thailand are Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Krabi.

From January to May 2016, Thailand welcomed 4,184,071 travellers from China, up 24.02 percent over the same period in 2015. For the entire year, TAT expects that Chinese tourists to Thailand will help contribute no less than 509 billion baht to the Thai economy.

Chonburi Attraction Club met at the Swiss Sheep Farm in Khao Chichan. Thitiphat Sirnatsrisakul, club president, said the meeting is designed to promote various events to attract tourists to Thailand. Events include the Thailand Golf Travel Mart 2016, Pattaya Variety Road Show to Indonesia, Amazing Thailand Road Show to Eastern Europe, Pattaya Grand Sales 2016 and others.

The club encourages members to distribute flyers and brochures offering discounts on tourist destinations.

Thitiphat added that they will be getting full support from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports because, with the current economic situation of Thailand, we need to increase tourism.

Police nail robber Jetwat Prajuabsuk was arrested for allegedly robbing two mobile phones, a motorbike and other items from a 14-year-old student. The victim, Puwadet Suawanchote, a scout student, identified Jetwat who was apprehended

in his home at Rungrueng Villa. He confessed that he stole the items from the young boy along Soi Khaotalo and Soi Khao Noi railway, having stopped him under the pretence of needing information.

Snap Judgment Our popular city has many things going for it: excellent restaurants and hotels, ever-improving sports facilities, family entertainment options, widespread use of English, Russian and Chinese being amongst them. City Hall in the last few years has successfully marketed Pattaya, particularly overseas, which is now the preferred venue for a host of internationallysponsored sporting competitions and music festivals.

Subject to government funding being available, much-needed infrastructure improvements are in the pipeline.

Unfortunately, Pattaya’s major problem is not being addressed properly. Tourist scams remain the single most disastrous factor in both Pattaya and Phuket. A high-level diplomatic meeting was held in Pattaya some weeks ago to protest the crimes in front of the new police chief. There would be little or no point unless the underlying issues are addressed properly.

Much of the action against tourist scams and violence frankly is propaganda. Slogans such as “Your Safety Is Our First Priority” on behalf of the authorities are no doubt meant well, but don’t translate into action if tourists are still being threatened by greedy jet ski operators, ripped off by shady gem shops or assaulted by taxi drivers. Earlier this year there was a great fanfare when police observation towers were introduced along Beach Road to be manned by eagle-eyed cops with binoculars. Apart from the first time, the edifice at the start of Walking Street has been unused for the whole period.

Of course, we can’t expect miracle solutions. Tourists must take some responsibility for their own actions. Thus wearing expensive jewelry whilst walking around at night is silly in any country in the world, let alone in Pattaya which is increasingly attracting high-end visitors and expats. It’s also true that foreign tourists can’t wait months on end for a case to be heard at the criminal court even when the alleged offender is identified. The tourism ministry said two months ago that special fast-action courts would be established to deal with these matters. Since then nothing has been heard. Was this notion just propaganda once again?

The reality is that in some quarters tourists are looked on as prey rather than as guests. Wherever tourists show up in force, with lots of money to spend, confidence tricksters and villains will be on hand to greet them. Tourists are out to enjoy themselves and tend to forget about personal security. Sadly there are video clips on the internet which frankly show visitors being ripped off in jet ski set-ups and other notorious scams. In the vast majority of cases, nothing happens to the perpetrators whilst the complaining tourist might receive a brief police report on the incident – period.

Perhaps it is true that European, American and Australian visitors are relatively wise about these matters. They have had the advantage of countless TV documentaries, embassy warnings and social media messaging to put them on their guard. But the increasing number of Indian and Chinese tourists may not be so savvy. Not yet anyway. The Thai tourist ministry urgently requires an action plan dealing with the realities on the ground. Simply putting out reassuring press releases is no longer enough. After all, Pattaya’s future is at stake.

The End of an Era

The Wai Khru ceremony takes place in schools, colleges and universities throughout the Kingdom on any Thursday in June.

Throughout the month, ceremonies where students pay their respects to their teachers took place at several projects managed by the Father Ray Foundation, including the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities and the Father Ray Day Care Center. As usual the students presented their teachers with beautifully decorated floral ornaments, there was dancing and students also received awards and scholarships for good work over the past school year.

But on the final day of June the Wai Khru ceremony which took place at the Pattaya School for the Blind was a very

special one as it was also saw the retirement of the school’s founder and principal Aurora Lee Sribuapan.

For more than 30 years Khun Aurora, who herself is blind, has seen the school grow from a few rooms off Pattaya Klang, to the building of the current school located on Naklua soi 16. She has also witnessed the construction of a new vocational facility which is used to train blind and visually impaired people with new skills and knowledge so that they can find suitable employment.

The school currently offers an education from kindergarten up to grade 9 to 110 blind and visually impaired children and since it’s opening more than 400 students have graduated. On Khun Aurora’s final Wai Khru ceremony not only did the

current students pay their respects and give thanks, but many former students traveled back to Pattaya to pay their respects.

One young man who returned on Wai Khru first arrived at the school as a six year old; Khun Aurora taught him English, she sent him to a local government school to finish his final three years, grades 10-12, before he entered the Faculty of Law at Thammasart University.

Bear is his name, and he is now secretary general of the Foundation for the Blind in Thailand.

The new principal at the school is Khru Chitsukno, who is also blind and a former student at the school and, like Bear, was also taught English

by Khun Aurora.

The 2916 FEI World Jumping Challenge "The Final Event of the 2016 FEI World Jumping Challenge (Event #3) was held at Horseshoe Point Resort Pattaya, last 01-03 July, with a good turn-out of 70 horses and over 230 entries from 13 clubs all over Thailand.

This event, aside from the show jumping, also featured dressage competitions for all age groups.

This is the 38th year of the challenge worldwide, and the purpose for its conception was to provide less experienced riders to compete in an international level without leaving their own countries. The major contribution of the challenge to the sport was to popularize show jumping in countries where the sport is still in its development stage.

This is the second year in a row that Horseshoe Point hosted all of the 3 events organized in Thailand based on a new 3-event format that was introduced last year, with a minor change; athletes now keep the 2 best results, and they can drop the lowest event, or skip one, in case their horse is lame or the rider is not well.

The course plans for all the events were designed by Bernardo Costa Cabral (POR). The president of the Ground Jury for the event was Phutthihat Sethchaivut (THA), and the members were Pakin Chamswad (THA) and Dr. Zherwin M. Acosta, D.V.M (PHI).

The final of the World Jumping Challenge this year will be in Rabat, Morocco.

by John K. Lindgren A wine dinner at the luxury grand Siam Kempinski’s is always a highlight of Bangkok's culinary calendar.

Recently Brasserie Europa, the hotel's smart all day dining restaurant, hosted a wine dinner featuring a gourmet selection of dishes prepared by executive Chef James Norman paired with fine Chilean wines from Ravanal Wine Estate imported by P.O.P. Food & Beverage Company.

The dinner fully booked and there is anticipation in the air as the guests, a new generation of wine aficionados, young professionals arrive. The elegant Brasserie Europa’s tables decked and glasses sparkling.

Guests comfortably seated as the first dish appears. A melt-in-your-mouth yellow fin tuna tartare avocado cream, kalamata olives, lemon fennel salad paired with Ravanal's best white Ravanal Reserva Chardonnay

2014. Straw color with intense banana, vanilla aromas and a hint of pineapple loaded with Chardonnay crispness and freshness.

The first red wine: Ravanal Reserva Carmenere, a dark-skinned grape variety originally from Bordeaux, which has found a particularly suitable home in Chile. Ravanal's Carmenere is served with a mouthwatering Parsley potato gnocchi duck ragout, chives sour cream, rosemary parmesan crisps. A match in gastronomic heaven: the duck ragout, parsley potato gnocchi (pronounced 'nokki') parmesan crisps ('chips' in US English) washed down Chilean Carmenere full of ripe black fruit flavor of plums and berries. Big smiles at the tables. Behind me I hear “this is lip smacking good” in North American accent. oenologist and granddaughter of the founder Teodoro Ravanal, gives a short speech about the family wine enterprise, its history, the Chilean soil, terroir and ideal climate of Colchagua Valley producing grapes of outstanding quality.

Now, the main course: Slowcooked Australian oyster blade beef carrot mousseline and roasted, homemade ricotta, Cabernet Sauvignon sauce. Juicy, succulent Australian beef with one of the award winning Ravanal 'Cabs' the Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2014. In the glass deep red tones complemented by elegant and intense aromas of red fruits, chocolate and soft notes of vanilla. On the palate expressive with ripe and silky tannins. What a duo: Australian prime beef, Chilean Cabernet Reserva. “Cheers, compliments to the chef!” says a young entrepreneur at my table.

This memorable Brasserie Europa Chilean wine dinner ends on sweet note: Caramelized figs, mascarpone cheese ice cream, and ginger bread.

A melange of flavors and textures matched with Ravanal Limited Selection 2010 in the glass. A red three grape combination of classic Bordeaux Syrah (Shiraz), Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon varieties with deep ruby hues, complex and intense, with aromas of ripe red fruits and dry plums. This Ravanal Limited Selection is not a (sweet) dessert wine – but it partners marvelously with the figs, ice cream and ginger bread.

CAPE DARA RESORT On Trend Cocktails and a Saturday Seafood Bonanza Cape Dara Resort is indeed a “starry” resort set on the most southerly promontory of Naklua peninsular, the edifice rises 26 stories into the sky to present incomparable vistas of Pattaya Bay. “Dara” means star and this 5-star resort boasts a coterie of bars, lounges and restaurants including the newlyopened Sphere cocktail lounge on the ground floor. Sleek, chic and subtly lit with a stunning bar glowing with a cosmic amount of multi-coloured cocktail ingredients, it is the latest on-trend venue in this extraordinary resort. Mick and I were invited recently to sip and taste their signature specialities. First up was Interstellar, a kind of molecular sangria made with either white or red wine and cut fruit. That is where the similarity ends. Two glass spheres are lit from below with the aid of a blow torch to heat the wine and fruit and then for extra extravagance enveloped in liquid nitrogen to create a smoky cauldron effect. Enjoy the spectacle and wait a while before drinking to make sure there is no visible mist or fog. Next up was Berry Comet, a cocktail ice cream created from Rose Tequila, Monin strawberry syrup, strawberries, apples

and raspberries making for the most delectable dessert cocktail. Last to be served was Sweet Summer mixed from Pampero Bianco rum, Malibu, coconut milk and topped with blue coconut sweet noodles and fine strips of jack fruit. There are dozens of mixologist’s creations here so lots of opportunities to enjoy the joys of the cocktail culture.

It was then time to wind our way around the swimming pool to Radius Restaurant which benefits from spectacular panoramic views out over the sea and at night the glittering lights of downtown Pattaya. We were here to savour the restaurant’s Saturday night BBQ buffet priced at B.1,299++.

The décor is chic and elegant, decorated in soothing muted tones using natural organic materials to reflect the hotel’s belief in environmental conservation. The restaurant was buzzing with happy eaters when we arrived, and the talented Phee was entertaining diners with his tuneful renditions of songs from the 70s and 80s, making for a cheery party ambiance.

The sushi and sashimi table is always a popular starting spot at any

buffet and this was where we headed to kick off the proceedings. Premium quality raw fish and seaweedwrapped delicacies sat glistening on ice awaiting our selection. Salmon, snapper, and tuna immediately found their way to our plates accompanied by a mighty dollop of top-notch seaweed and fish roe salad, pickled ginger and of course that nose exploding wasabi. For a hot soup option, spicy pumpkin was the special for that evening, the big steel cauldron sat next to a huge basket of freshly-baked breads. The DIY Caesar salad was a popular spot for a tasty starter or side dish. Chilled poached prawns, crabs, giant mussels and rock lobsters are generously piled on their icy setting, and it was from here that Mick and I launched into our shellfish fest. The huge Surat Thani oysters glistened and beckoned as did the rock lobster and giant prawns, their shells easily falling away under our fingers (always a good indication of freshness) and dipped into one of the myriad of dressings and sauces, we were happy eaters.

The adjacent cold meats table offered mountains of sausages, squid, chicken breasts, beef and pork kebab,

while the line of heated chafer dishes were brimming with hot, cooked dishes. These included baked crab with vermicelli, salmon steaks with Mediterranean sauce, roast stuffed chicken, lyonnaise potatoes, rice, BBQ duck, grilled pork rack with garlic sauce, and stir-fried beef in oyster sauce.

However, the aromas from the noodle station pulled us in that direction. Oodles of noodles were on offer; pick your favourite and then select your vegetables, fish, crab or prawns and chef will prepare your bespoke noodle dish to order. We chose our version of the muchliked glass noodle salad (yum woon sen). Packed with shellfish, crunchy veggies, peanuts, onions and chillis and tossed in a fresh lime/fish sauce dressing, it was spicy and vibrant. The som tam table then beckoned. This perennially popular salad is prepared to your specifications and penchant for chilli heat, it was sparkling with freshness and flavours and quite the best we’ve tasted for a while. the oyster and mussel variety, but also lots of other choices for egg lovers.

Moving on to the dessert table, which included ice cream plus banana split or mango with sticky rice.

Cape Dara’s in-house pâtissières had produced the most beautiful pastries and desserts. They looked gorgeous and tasted wickedly wonderful. Hot, fresh waffles looked tempting, but we had to pass as our volume of gleeful eating had defeated us.

The a la carte menu at Radius covers the gamut of all-day dining from Thai favourites to western snacks and main courses. The views are stunning and the sunsets extraordinary, making Cape Dara one of Pattaya’s finest stylish lifestyle destinations.

DICEY REILLY’S PUB & EATERY Hosts Another Successful Wine Tasting “The Craic” was alive and well at Dicey Reilly’s Pub & Eatery on Second Road recently where wine lovers had gathered to enjoy the delights of Arabella wines from the estate of Robertson Wine Valley in South Africa, widely regarded as one of SA’s premium wine destinations, together with Altivo wines from the Uco Valley in Argentina. Their Malbec especially is internationally recognised and representative of the speciality of the terroir which is located 1,700 m. above sea level.

The evening commenced with a glass of French B & G (Barton & Guestier) Rose sparkling which perfectly opened the evening. These

two friends and business partners created the company during the French revolution and it has passed to successive generations ever since.

Light, fruity and crisp it proved the perfect first pouring to launch the evening and mingle with the assembled eonophiles.

South African wines are some of our favourites and the Arabella Chenin Blanc, a multi-award winning wine, was no exception. Enjoyed with chef’s creative cold appetizers such as seared sea bass in Masala sauce, pomelo salad with shrimp and ratatouille with black pearl tomato, it melded well with the flavours as did the Arabella Rose labeled Pink

Panacea 2015. A gentle wine with fruity light tannins we enjoyed it very much. The third label from this vineyard offered a Pinotage.

This red grape variety from S.A. has gained in popularity these last few years for its inviting aromas of mocha and chocolate finishing with spicy undertones on the palate. For pairing with this rich red the 3-hour braised beef and the mini black lava burgers proved ideal friends indeed as did the yard long curled pork sausage in the style of the famous South African Boerewor.

Are Things Really Getting Any Better?

There are all kinds of pricing indicators that have surfaced over the years to help us gauge the economy and determine how we are doing financially. Just one year ago I revealed my own economic indicator which I called the ‘Sign Board Index’ (SBI).

Pricing trends normally are measured for modern wholesale markets, manufacturing industries and commodities markets by what is known as the Producer Price Index (PPI)--the international industry standard for imparting pricing fluctuations and, more importantly, pricing and economic trends.

Then there is something called the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), which is an economic theory--a technique used to determine the relative value of currencies.

When one wishes to understand these pricing trends and/or changes in relative currency values as concerns modern wholesale, manufacturing and commodities markets, it’s the PPI and PPP that can answer the big questions.

But what about the guy on the street? You know, the average ‘Joe Consumer’ who might be your neighbor, friend or co-worker. Just how does he or she really know how things are going in their local economy?

Many in our society and throughout the world are unable to decipher or apply such concepts as the PPI or PPP. Most simply have such questions as: Are things getting better? Are things getting worse? And just how bad is it?

So how can we simplify economics to a level that the average person can understand and appreciate?

Well nearly 30 years ago a clever American pricing standard known as the Big Mac Index (BMI) was introduced in The Economist magazine. The Pam Woodall creation was a tongue-in-cheek illustration that was so well received that the prestigious magazine has reprinted an updated version every year since.

You may not have heard of Pam Woodall, but I’ll bet you’ve heard of her ‘Burgernomics’!

Thailand has its own pricing index parody introduced by Achara Deboonme.

According to Achara’s version of the Big Mac Index (BMI), the average price of a Big Mac in America in July 2013 was US $4.56, while in Thailand it was 89 baht--or $2.85 at the exchange rate of 31.27 per dollar at that time; the BMI suggested that the Thai baht was undervalued by 37.5 per cent.

price of a Big Mac in local currencies.

Taking the concept to the next level in Thailand, Achara devised her own clever insight into pricing parity within the Kingdom, calling it the Isaan Somtam Index (ISI). Her new metric in determining the purchasing power parity of the Thai people is based on the price of somtam, known to most foreigners as papaya salad.

Using the BMI or ‘Big Mac Index’ formula to compare the price of somtam in each province of Thailand, Achara determined that the cost of living in Phuket was the highest in the country.

Yes, economically things are getting tough almost everywhere with almost no country unaffected.

Having said that, according to the Associated Press, a little over a year ago we witnessed a shocking American newspaper headline, ‘The burger chain that put “supersize” into the American vernacular is slimming down: For the first time in more than 40 years, and perhaps ever, McDonald’s says the number of U.S. restaurants it has is shrinking’.

Now that is an economic indicator that everyone in America can understand and relate to, but what about Thailand?

The popularity of a burger in America is about equivalent to that of a bowl of noodle soup in Thailand. So a little over a year ago Thailand witnessed its own surprising headline: Mama brand instant noodles sales drop for the first time in 42 years.

The article went on to say that sales of Mama brand instant noodles dropped 0.3 percent in the first four months of 2015, the first decline ever in company history.

Now that’s an economic indicator that everyone here--rich or poor--can understand and relate to.

Pam Woodall’s Big Mac Index and Achara Deboonme’s Isaan Somtam Index demonstrate that there are easier and less confusing methods to measure the state of local economies.

Well at that same time a little over one year ago Clayton Wade came up with his own economic indicator: the Sign Board Index. I had been researching this phenomenon for many months while driving back and forth to Bangkok a couple of times every month, and I had determined for myself without a doubt that the Thai economy was not going in the right direction yet; it had not yet hit rock bottom either.

before reaching Pattaya, I counted 19 that were blank. That represents an SBI indicator of 47.5 percent. That’s right; nearly half the sign boards were completely empty!

If that was not a certain indication of what our economic situation was, I don’t know what was. I felt strongly that this very simplistic signboard phenomenon was a reliable economic indicator that was literally staring us in the face.

My Pattaya Today column that month ended with, ‘The next time you find yourself driving down the motorway to or from Bangkok and happen to ask yourself ‘Just How Bad is the Economy…’ start counting those empty sign boards and calculate Clayton Wade’s ‘Sign Board Index’ and you will have a pretty good idea ‘Just How Bad the Economy is’!

Well that was a year ago when the economy didn’t look great; it wasn’t. And it continued to get worse.

Now, one year later, Clayton Wade has written two articles in a row (June 16 and July 1) on how the Thai economy is beginning to show clear indications of moving in a positive direction.

After the long and difficult downward economic trend that most of us have experienced here on the Eastern Seaboard, believing that the local economy was getting better was a bit more positive than a few of my readers could imagine. Several readers have questioned my sources as they find it hard to believe that the proverbial ‘economic silver lining’ just might be shining down on us…finally!

Then it dawned on me: Let’s try my SBI once more and see what we could glean from its figures.

once again, counting empty signboards. I did my first survey on June 30 with impressive results. I counted 16 out of 40 signboards without advertising. That represents an SBI indicator of 40 percent. That’s right; an improvement year on year of 7.5 percent!

It was an exciting discovery, but I quickly decided that if I am going to use this for an honest and informative piece of journalism I had better give it one more survey to make sure.

So ten days later I again set out and drove past those same 40 sign boards. This time I counted 14 out of 40 that were blank. That represents an SBI Indicator of 35 percent.

That’s right, a 5 percent improvement in only ten days!

I have always been a straight shooter, and when it came to reporting in my columns the recent condo oversupply and eventual condo market crash, I did so because I saw it coming and I saw it early and clearly.

Now, I am more than happy to see these ‘hard times’ in the rearview mirror with better times ahead.

All things considered, and with no unforeseen calamities on the horizon, I think that we have a good chance of rounding the corner and putting this recent Pattaya real estate bust in the history books.

Come on, man, this is Thailand, the Magic Kingdom, where a panda and an elephant on CNN just predicted that Portugal would win over France in the Euro Cup! What is a Child Support Agreement?

A Child Support Agreement is a written agreement between parents setting out the amount of child support to be paid to help with the financial costs of raising their child/children after separation.

It can include provisions regarding the method of payment of child support to cover the child’s expenses such as food, shelter, clothing, education, health costs and other extra-curricular costs for the benefit of the child. Support shall be provided by periodical payments unless the parties agree to settle in other manners.

Following the UK’s exit from the EU, possible amendments in legislation regarding the freedom of movement of pensions may herald in a period of increased demand for QROPS. The concern being that the UK Exchequer may decide to apply restrictions, or even abolish what was a system effectively foisted on them by the EU. Should that be the case, time may be of the essence because, although HMRC have never applied retrospective action on cases that are already in existence, transfers that are still in process would count as fair game and, as they can take weeks or months to complete, depending on the former pension schemes’ attitude and administration, this could catch a large number of individuals.

The fact is that HMRC have never been keen on the concept of UK pension holders being able to move their pot outside their control, so there has to be a distinct possibility that the current ability to transfer pension benefits away from the UK tax net could well be a target.

If you intend to remain a non-resident of the UK, for tax purposes, then examining the merits, or otherwise, might be better done sooner rather than later. It is, of course, entirely possible that HMRC will leave the situation as it stands. The issue is that, at this stage, nobody knows how they will react.

Pensions in the UK have gone through dramatic changes over recent years and it’s important to look carefully at current schemes to weigh the potential advantages of transferring against any loss of guarantees that exist in some schemes, particularly ‘defined benefits’ arrangements.

If you intend to remain an expatriate then distancing yourself from the UK financially is important from a tax perspective. There are two main categories that apply to non-residents of the UK. The first is ‘nonresident for tax purposes’. This requires certain conditions to be satisfied to ensure you are fiscally removed from the UK, apart from inheritance tax. Any significant attachments there can be construed by HMRC that you intend to return and whilst that may or may not negate your non-resident status, it can certainly affect the second category, ‘nondomicile’.

‘Non- domicile’ is more of a grey area. All UK citizens are deemed as domiciled in the UK, as a default position. Non- domicile, if established, removes you completely from the UK in every financial respect but it is not likely that HMRC will confirm this status in writing, even if it has been achieved. There have been a number of high profile cases won by the UK tax authorities, which subsequently exposed those individuals to inheritance tax assessments. In these cases, again, establishing intention to return to the UK came into play. The more it can be shown that you have reasons to come back, the more likely ‘non-domicile’ status will elude you. Owning property, holding UK bank accounts, children at school there are all notches on the gun that can add up to your being still classified as domiciled in the UK and, in consequence, potentially liable for inheritance tax on your worldwide assets.

Business News Bosch registers strong growth in Thailand Further expansion to meet increasing demand

Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, ended its 2015 fiscal year with 10.8 billion baht (285 million euros) in consolidated sales in Thailand, thus registering a strong growth of 22 percent compared to the previous year. “Thailand continues to be an important market for Bosch. We anticipate an increased demand for our products and services following the government’s policies to stimulate the economy, and push through the development of key infrastructure projects,” said Joseph Hong, managing director of Bosch in Thailand. “With our solutions ‘invented for life’, we help make a difference in the country since 1923”, he added.

The number of associates employed at Bosch in Thailand in 2015 stood at more than 1,100, a year-on-year increase of 12 percent.

This number is expected to further increase in 2016 in line with the continued business expansion.

Development of Bosch business sectors in Thailand The production output of Thailand’s automotive industry increased slightly in 2015 from the previous year due to a growth in exports and despite a decline of the local market. Bosch’s Mobility Solutions business sector in Thailand saw an increase in sales revenue compared to the previous year, mainly driven by sales of the Chassis Systems division. The Industrial Technology business sector expanded its operations in hydraulic solutions and industrial packaging in 2015. On this basis a positive performance is anticipated for 2016. While the Consumer Goods business sector was impacted by the slowdown in the domestic economy in 2015, the Energy and Building Technology business sector benefitted from the government’s approval of several important infrastructure projects in the second half of the year and registered positive growth.

Investment of one billion baht (26 million euros) in manufacturing facility in Thailand Bosch remains confident for the market outlook in Thailand as it continues to be an automotive hub. The company is constructing its first plant for the manufacturing of gasoline injection systems in Thailand – and the Southeast Asia region. Bosch currently has seven fuel injector factories worldwide, out of which three are located in Asia (China, Japan and Thailand).

In 2016, Bosch plans to invest approximately one billion baht in

building and infrastructure of the new plant. It will be capable of producing one million fuel injector units every year, and will commence operation in mid-2017. This new activity is anticipated to generate more than 800 jobs by end of 2017.

“With the new fuel injector plant we are able to meet the increasing demand of our customers in the region. The plant will also provide great career opportunities for the local workforce”, said Hong.

New automotive R&D facility Bosch is also planning to set up a research and development (R&D) facility in the same area of fuel injector manufacturing site to further enhance the company’s automotive and mobility solutions business in the country. “The research and development facility will attract skilled engineers from diverse backgrounds, especially in the automotive and mechanical engineering fields”, Hong said. It will be the first R&D facility of Bosch in Thailand, underlining the country’s role for the Bosch Group.

Bosch stays on course towards sustainability Over the course of 2015, Bosch Thailand continued to strengthen its longstanding commitment to provide educational opportunities to less privileged children and contribute towards their overall well-being. The company has been continuously supporting the “Hand to Hand” Foundation in Pattaya, which focuses on providing education to young students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

At the “Skills for Life” Foundation in Chiang Mai, Bosch continued to support hill tribe youths to achieve autonomy and self-sufficiency by providing a full range of essential kitchen appliances such as ovens, microwave ovens and refrigerators, which have already become a fundamental part of fund-raising activities at the foundation. As vocational skills are highly valued in today’s employment market, Bosch continues to work closely with Pradabos, a foundation that promotes vocational skills training, to jointly develop vocational courses, which align those skills to the market demand. Under the German-Thai Dual Excellence Education program, Bosch also works in collaboration with the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce to promote youth development and education.

Bosch Group worldwide business outlook for 2016 Following a record year in 2015, the Bosch Group wants to continue its growth trend this year. A leading global supplier of technology and services, it expects worldwide sales to grow within an

exchange rate-adjusted range of 3 to 5 percent in 2016. Speaking at the company’s annual press conference in Germany, Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner said: “We plan to grow not only with innovative products, but also with innovative services.” In the connectivity business, Bosch focuses on the “3S’s”: sensors, software, and services. The company is increasingly using connected services to build on its broad basis in the hardware business.

As it does so, Bosch benefits not just from its technological diversification, but also from its wide-ranging industry and domain expertise. The newly created Bosch Global Service Solutions division, the recently established Bosch IoT Cloud, as well as the Bosch Smart Home System launched at the start of 2016 contribute to this strategy.

In Asia Pacific, the Bosch Group boosted its sales in 2015 to a total of 730 billion baht (19.2 billion euros), thus registering a nominal growth of 17 percent on a comparable basis (2.8 percent after adjusting for exchange-rate effects).

At 27 percent of total Bosch sales revenue, the region’s share of sales remained at the high level of the previous year.

Youth Focus MIS Sport Day Builds School Spirit

Banners flew and flags waved as the sixth annual Mooltripakdee International School Sport Day was held last month. Technically, the sports day had already begun as the 16th of June was a special sports day devoted to our youngest students. Over 400 students and staff participated in sports activities and colourful presentations. The energy was electric as sports events and cheering could be heard all day.

The day started with the traditional parade to the sport field. First were the drum majors who dressed in astoundingly beautiful outfits and performed a routine

to a popular hit song. The dancing was great and the baton twirling was thrilling, prompting many cheers and applause from a large audience of spectators.

Next up was the MIS school band and they didn’t disappoint. They performed an excellent routine that got everyone fired up for a great

made.

Eventually, the winning act was GIS's own Year 11 group Apollo. Well done to

everyone who took part.

Bandslam at GIS!

by Mark Beales, Photos by Ritche Guisona Talented musical students rocked Garden International School (GIS) as they held another spectacular Bandslam.

The annual event saw students from nearby school St Andrews join in the competition to find the area's top musical talents.

There was a range of music and talents, all of whom impressed the judges. After the acts had performed, there were some tough decisions to be

The entire school was split up in to three different teams; the green team, the purple team, and the orange team. Each team was then given a name.

This year the Green team was called the Dashing Dolphins, the Purple team the Winning Whales and the Orange team the Speedy Sharks.

Each team performed a dance routine after the walk-in and the dances were fantastic.

Everyone was filming and snapping photos as the children performed. The excitement was palpitating.

Following the dance the school participated in an aerobic dance exercise to get warmed up for the day.

Once the opening festivities were over the competitions began in earnest. There was a large array of events to compete in.

Some examples were

chair ball, basketball, football and relay races. There were also many individual events such as sprinting, distance running, hurdles, and ball toss. Students were awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal depending on the outcome of their competition. Not only did the students learn about winning and losing, but more importantly, they learned about good sportsmanship and fellowship.

The rain came down hard just as the day was finishing.

Nonetheless we managed to finish nearly all the events. The finals in football were finished at lunchtime the following week. Congratulations to all the students for trying their best and making the MIS 2016 Sports Day a day to remember.

Just one more thing before I go!

Set of 69 Columbo episodes available

It’s a bit late now for Christmas, but the boxed set of every Columbo episode is available from Amazon for around 200 US dollars. This includes the last episodes in and around 2003 which, until recently, were not available on DVD except in Japan.

These final episodes, such as Columbo Likes The Nightlife and Strange Bedfellows, are amongst the weakest in the whole series spanning more than 30 years. Peter Falk by this time was failing physically – he’s still alive in December 2010 but suffering from advanced dementia – but neither his own energy nor the lacklustre scripts could make these episodes as riveting as the earlier ones.

Everybody recognises the Columbo formula, created by William Link and Richard Levinson, in which the traditional detective tale becomes inverted. Forget about Who Dunnit.

You know who the murderer is from the start and Columbo appears, as the Los Angeles police lieutenant, after about 15 minutes of viewing time. The fun is in seeing Columbo piece together the clues to bring the murderer to justice, howbeit in an idiosyncratic fashion, complete with raincoat, crumpled suit and a zany manner which makes suspects believe (wrongly)that he’s as thick as two short planks.

Actually there are a couple of episodes which don’t quite fit the mould. In Double Shock, it’s not clear which of two brothers killed their uncle until the denouement. In Rest In Peace Mrs Columbo, there’s some ambiguity about whether the good lady has in fact died. Of course, she hasn’t. And there are other quirks too. Columbo claims never to carry a gun, but he does actually show up with one in No Time To Die, one of the last episodes, first shown on American TV in 1992.

The worst episode of all is perhaps Dagger Of The Mind

(1972) in which Columbo arrives in London and helps the pedestrian UK police solve a Shakespearean tragedy. Ugh! By the way, the first time Columbo’s dog is shown is in the episode Etude in Black, and Columbo never appeared in the spin-off TV series Mrs Columbo, which was a complete flop. For more trivia of this sort, gripping to the dedicated follower and a complete bore to everyone else, go to the Ultimate Lieutenant Columbo site on the internet.

Normally, Columbo never lost his temper when bringing unsuspecting murderers to justice. He normally humors them, keeps chipping away at their alibis and ends up in most cases actually hearing a confession, sometimes to the accompaniment of that odd background music Give A Dog A Bone or This Old Man Came Rolling Home. But Columbo does occasionally drop his guard and is actually angry and shouting when confronting the evil doer in A Stitch In Crime and in Etude in Black. There is much debate about which is the best episode.

For my money, the choice is between Any Old Port In A Storm, in which Donald Pleasance murders his brother to prevent the family wine business from being sold, and Catch Me If You Can in which Ruth Gordon kills her nephew for murdering hiswife.

Actually, both these episodes are notable for an unusual feature – Columbo actually likes the killers, not for what they did but for their positive qualities. In the denouement to Any Old Port, the detective actually brings a bottle of wine to cheer up Donald Pleasance as he confesses his dastardly crime.

In Catch Me, Columbo almost apologises to Ruth Gordon for having to arrest her. This is all the more surprising as she subjected her nephew to an appalling death – entombed alive in a walk-in safe without any electric light. As in most Columbo episodes, there is no emphasis on the manner of

death and there is usually no sign of any blood even after a shooting. Death is invariably sanitized in the Columbo series.

The episodes have stood the test of time well, even though there is no sign of new technology or mobile phones. And the Columbo legacy goes on. Short stories are still being published

by William Link “as if ” solved by the detective. The lieutenant was impersonated by Homer Simpson in the TV show The Simpsons which must be just about the top accolade you can aim for. The Benny Hill Show and Mike Yarwood both did good impersonations of Columbo, and you can’t say better than that.

The boxed set, by the way, comes in a sort of cigar box which is too big to fit in your DVD cabinet, probably. Surprisingly, there is not a complete list of the episodes in the booklet, simply a general commentary on the themes and the various series from the early 1970s onwards. And just one more thing. There are five Barney’s Beanery greasy spoons shown altogether, not one as often supposed. Columbo is shown in the entire series eating chili nine times, a hot dog twice and a hamburger just once. Trivial pursuits fanatics please note.

Local Sports Sandy Stuvik shines in Silverstone

At the third round of the GP3 Series at the legendary Silverstone circuit, thousands of race fans made their way to the home of British Motorsport for the official support event of Formula 1.

Friday afternoon practice saw young Thai racer Sandy Stuvik top the timing sheets, proving that all the hard work put in by the team was starting to reward itself. "Although it's only practice it really does feel good to know that we've got a fast car here, and I'm confident for what we can do in the qualifying tomorrow morning."

Come Saturday morning, Sandy's pace proved not to be a fluke as he qualified in third position in one of the most competitive single-seater categories in the world. "I'm really happy to have been able to qualify so well, we were lucky with our time management and we also managed to put a decent lap together. Thanks to a penalty to Leclerc who qualifed in second, I will be starting on the front row with Alex Albon making it the first ever all-Thai front row in the GP3 Series, Sandy said."

Race 1 took place on Saturday afternoon, and after a good start, Sandy maintained his second position for the first part of the race. However, Sandy and the team had opted to play safe with the set-up which would ultimately be detrimental to the Thai racer. After developing lots of understeer, the others started to pass Sandy as his tires wore out. He would eventually finish in seventh place, after two penalties from drivers in front. "I'm really disappointed today, we showed that we have a really good one-lap pace but now our issue is race pace. Tomorrow we'll make some improvements to the car, but I'm lucky to be starting 2nd again tomorrow thanks to the reverse grid."

Early on Sunday morning the second race of the weekend began on a damp circuit. Sandy had another good start from second position and managed to take the lead by turn 1. After pulling out a small gap, the other cars started to catch the Thai driver. With difficult conditions, Sandy was struggling and started to lose places. Towards the closing stages of the race Sandy's engine lost power and he lost even more positions. He would eventually finish the race tenth. "I had an engine issue at the end which really cost me, but it was difficult to have the pace of the others on the half-dry half-wet track. Now my focus in on the next race in Hungary. We have to improve our race pace while maintaining our strong form in qualifying."

The next race will be at the Hungaroring Circuit. Sandy is as usual supported by the Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

PSC Tropical Golf from BJ's Khao Kheow (Stableford) This is the first course on our schedule every month when we sit down to decide where we are to go. The recent water shortages on the courses have not been too bad here and as we drove up to the course all looked green and ready to go. Only drawback was that there seemed to be a bit of mist around and as one wag put it, we were more likely to have a fog delay than a rain delay.

The course was quite empty and so we were able to get away on time. This is always a tough course no matter how good the day is, come out with a good score

here and you know you have had a good round. The course was in good condition with grass on the fairway and greens that ran quick and true, although maybe not up to their normal speed.

Biggest problem on the day was the humidity, all the players suffered and the last few holes saw many players losing points. In fact we had some scores on the day that were well below even what we usually saw here.

Soon finished, it was into the shower, up the stairs to the restaurant for a bite to eat and a drink, then back to Pattaya.

by James Olson Plutaluang A small field of 17 golfers made up for the numbers with the enthusiasm shown by our golfers. One needs to ask, was it the cheap rates offered up by The Big Navy course or the chance to play the course that it is? We played east and south from the yellow tees nominated by today’s captain.

Big Navy can be daunting to some but personally I find it a challenging course.

Once again this course was in great nick with the greens playing true. There was a threat of rain but that passed as quick as it arrived. Fairways had a bit of run and there was plenty of water to challenge all golfers as it was placed sometimes at two or three locations on the one hole.

Geri came out guns blazing and was determined to not let his back beat him on the day. With only one

division it was Geri with 41 points, a good score on the day. Filling the other places were Denis Steele, with The Viper, and Glenn Henriksen made up the four spots. Good winning scores today!

Tom H. Smooth at Silky Oak! Silky Oak – St ‘Tis another Friday for the Tropical golfers and on this particular one they decided to treat themselves to a visit to Silky Oak. The Tropical golfers play this course just a few times per year and it’s always a special day. It’s slow season and there is also a lot of local travel going on, but still, 15 golfers made their way to BJ's Lodge for food and cups of ambition. The later than usual tee time allowed for refills for those who wanted, and then the cars were loaded and off we went.

Silky Oak is an interesting layout that is designed to mess with your mind. There are several water carries off the tee, and even though the carries are not nearly as long as they

look and easily cleared by even short hitters, it still makes for some knee knocking. If one concentrates on the positives they will find the wide fairways inviting. Speaking of fairways, the condition this day was very good to excellent.

Sadly the greens were another matter, being both recently sanded and quite bumpy at times - green rating, fair. Silky Oak off the white tees is a course where good scores are common, and this day proved that – and how. You needed to be well above handicap to get mentioned.

Even with a healthy dose of high scores, one stood head, shoulders, and a par 5 above the rest. Tom Herrington (course h’cap 18) awoke from a golf slumber and turned

Crystal Bay With 19 anxious and optimistic golfers we departed The Swan somewhat earlier than expected. All were ready for the day's challenge to play Crystal Bay. The weather threatening early and with the deluge last night we were not sure what we would get. We played C and B nines in that order from the yellow tees. The course was in good nick and the weather gods smiled at us and kept the rain away.

Peter Bye took on the challenge of being group captain for the day, he played very well taking the game on from the outset.

He came home with a very good score of 42 points. Coming in second (only one shot behind) were Steve Younger and Paul Sharples, both having to go to the countback. Fourth and fifth places also had to be separated by a countback with Mick Johns getting the nod over Mashi Kaneta. Looking at the scores one can only think golf was the winner on the day!

Steve Durey winner at Greenwood and Burapa a bit but this was soon sorted out by Neil and the management, and we proceeded to tee off on a well presented course with slightly slow greens. A good day out was enjoyed by all with Steve Durey proving to be the man of the day with a first place finish and claiming two near pins: all this without playing to his handicap. Mr." hit the driver for the short holes", Peter Allen, managing to claim the other near pin.

It was a great experience to play on professional speed greens with tiger rough for those who strayed off the fairways. It really shows how well the local courses can be presented, when the effort is given. There was spirited competition with Tony Robbins setting the pace with 18 on the front but bunker trouble on the 12th hurt. Jimmy Carr and Steve Durey fought it out to the finish, both with 35 points, with Steve taking it on count back for back to back wins with Tony a shot behind in third. The second place finish vaulted Jimmy Carr into an early lead in the July Golfer of the Month competition.

Sad to say the Grandstands were empty as the Bunker Boys marched up the 18th.

This Nick Faldo/ Desmond Muirhead course was in great shape and as tough a course as it can be, it is always enjoyable. Greenwood – Stableford – Yellow Tees Not easy playing golf after such a great Pattaya Sports Club Summer Party from the night before, but we all managed to turn up at that first tee box anyway. The course was certainly damp so lift, clean and place is our policy at this time of the year. Greenwood has become one of the most popular golf courses with all of the Pattaya bar societies these days, as the quality and price make the trip out here worthwhile.

You & Your Pets Healthy Lawn or Healthy Pet?

Do you use pesticides in your flower bed, vegetable garden or lawn? If so, you may be contaminating the environment and making your pets and other animals sick. And not only outdoor animals. Research has revealed that after pesticides are applied outdoors, they often make their way indoors and onto surfaces via your clothing and shoes.

Some garden chemicals, such as fertilizers, may cause only mild stomach upset, while others, such as insecticides, can be deadly. Insecticides and snail bait tend to be the most poisonous to pets. Luckily, safer alternatives, such as pyrethrins, have been developed as of late.

But it isn’t just insecticides that pose a threat— herbicides and fertilizers can be just as dangerous.

Disolfuton, for example, is extremely toxic to animals, causing everything from diarrhea to seizures.

How can you maintain healthy lawns and gardens while keeping your furry friends safe? After fertilizing your plants, water the product off the leaves. With weed control chemicals that must be allowed to dry on the leaves, do not permit pets to use the area until the products have totally dried.

Furthermore, be sure to read all warnings labels on products you buy for your lawn and garden, and always use caution.

This lovely 3 coloured mum was rescued along with her 5 babies from one of our local temples. She is a very loving girl who has done a great job looking after her babies.

She will be neutered in a few weeks time once her babies have stopped feeding from her.

Charlie

Is your dog drinking an excessive amount of water? Like an entire bowl at once and then more when it’s offered? Or has he recently begun drinking from the toilet bowl? Any changes in drinking patterns could be a sign of a potential disease or condition, anything from an infection to kidney insufficiency or from liver disease to diabetes.

Some dogs—like larger breeds and more playful dogs—are naturally excessive water drinkers. Be aware of how much your dog drinks normally, and consult your vet if the amount suddenly increases or decreases.

Charlie is one of our special cases: he is stone deaf, blind in one eye and has only limited vision in the other. Because of his disabilities he must have a secure place to live, somewhere that he cannot escape from. Also, he can only go outside when supervised He stays in an outdoor wooden cat house by day and has a big indoor cage at night.

Adopting a Pet on a Whim If a friend is giving away puppies or a local market is offering the cutest little kittens for a pittance, you may be tempted to take home a new cuddly pet. But this should never be a spur-of-themoment decision.

This small tabby kitten is one of 5 lovely babies that arrived just this week.

There are 3: this lovely grey colour and 2 stripey ginger ones. They were rescued from one of our local temples along with their mum Gypsy. By the time you read this article they should be old enough to be re-homed.

You are making a long-term commitment to care for the animal -- 10 to 15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats. It's also best to do some research ahead of time to decide what type of pet -- and what specific breed -- would be best for you and your family.

A cat usually has about 12 whiskers on each side of its face.

Muffin is one of our lovely mums. Her babies went to new homes some years ago.

She is a quiet soul who prefers the company of people to other cats and so would suit someone who would prefer to have just one cat in their family.

Cats are champs at landing feet first over short distances, thanks to a highly flexible backbone. But they do sometimes land on their heads.

Falling from windows or balconies that are higher than one or two stories, a cat’s feet cannot "break" the fall. Their heads and bodies collide with the ground, causing severe injuries. Cats with access to an elevated, open window may also focus so intently on a bird or flying insect, that they lose their balance and fall. The phenomenon is called “high-rise syndrome.”
