rom July 15, customers at Thai banks are registering for what is known as AnyID, allowing people to use mobile phone numbers or national identification numbers to pay merchants starting in October this year. Commercial banks will facilitate AnyID registration, allowing customers to sign up through ATMs, internet banking and mobile banking as well as traditional bank branches. Thailand’s bankers expect that, within five years, 60 percent of all financial transactions will be made without cash, double the present limit. Banks and other financial institutions are now investing in electronic data capture to comply with the government’s national e-payment program. The second phase of the

government program is centred on electronic data capture (EDC). Thai banks now have 300,000 EDC units that work with chip-based ATM cards or debit cards and have now stopped issuing the traditional magnetic strip ATM or debit and credit cards in order to accelerate the shift to EDC units and cashless payments. The number of EDC units is expected to rise to two million at Thai banks before the end of this year. There are many reasons for the advance of cashless payments worldwide. Firstly paper or plastic currency is inconvenient to carry around and, if stolen, cannot usually be replaced. Also the fees for digital banking are likely to be lower because the transactions do not cost the banks as much as those at branches or ATMs. To encourage the

use of cashless payments, the number of traditional ATM machines is expected to reduce from 70,000 to 30,000 within the next two years. The switch away from paper and plastic money still has a long way to go in Thailand where, for example, buyers of new or second-hand vehicles or properties must often carry huge amounts of cash to complete the transaction. There will also be resistance from small-scale merchants who are not used to any other payment than physical cash. But financial experts say the move to a cashless

future is inevitable. The UK and Sweden are the two countries in the world closest to becoming the world’s first such societies. According to Mastercard, almost 90 percent of transactions there take place by debit and credit card processing or online. Increasingly, people in those countries simply do not carry around cash any more. Almost all citizens over the age of 15 have at least one bank account. The logic of the cashless society is that it makes sense. Printing the bills and overseeing the cash Continued on page 4

Ladyboys strike again

Food safety checks ongoing

The consumer protection division of the health authority has launched a mobile unit which will inspect markets and retail outlets to make sure that no chemicals have been added to food artificially to extend its shelf life. A recent inspection at Lan Po

Chinese tourist Lyu Ming, 38, reported at Pattaya police station that a group of unwelcome ladyboys had snatched his necklace worth 150,000 baht before absconding into the night. He explained that he was walking with a friend on Beach Road when the transvestites approached and offered unspecified services at a fair price in today’s competitive world. Whilst one of the ladyboys hugged Ming, another swiftly separated him from his expensive jewelry. Ming said he was not immediately aware he had been robbed and began searching the ground to see if the necklace had accidentally dropped off. Sadly it had not.

Full speed led to accident

Tourist assaulted in bar Three Kwaitis on a motorbike crashed into another one, injuring the Thai driver, 20-year-old Sukanya Surinam. Apparently the foreign nationals were driving behind her at full speed and tried to cut her off from the main road.

Sukanya was taken to hospital but the foreigners escaped unscathed. Police said they were reviewing some CCTV evidence in an attempt to pin the blame on these careless visitors.

Serious accident in Pong An unidentified tourist was assaulted in Showgirls Agogo on Soi LK Metro, reportedly for not having enough money to pay his bar bill. Pol. Lt. Chainarong Chai-in went to the scene with Sawangboriboon Foundation Pattaya and police officer and found the injured man with wounds on his cheeks. A witness said that the tourist came out of the bar bleeding and asking for help. He said he was assaulted inside the bar because he did not have enough money to pay his 4,130 baht bill. Employees attributed the man’s injuries to his having a fight with another customer. Police asked to view the CCTV but the bar manager refused, so he was taken in for questioning. In the meantime, the victim fled from the hospital after being treated.

Officers at Khao Keaw police station reported an accident along highway number 7 in Pong, Banglamung. A passenger taxi with 12 passengers collided with a cement truck which led to all concerned being injured and requiring hospitalization. The driver

of the van admitted he had collided with the rear of the truck but was unable to explain the incident to the satisfaction of police who are continuing their inquiries. Bystanders said the driver seemed to change his mind after indicating he was going to make a turn.

News Garden International School praised by inspectors You’re in trouble In this week’s column, we explore how your embassy can help (or not) when you meet a big problem. Of course, embassies are separate institutions, but they are increasingly coming together when asked for assistance.

An international school near Pattaya has been praised by inspectors for its positive and supportive climate. The comments came after a recent visit to Garden International School (GIS) by the Council of International Schools (CIS). The independent inspectors also confirmed GIS’s status as the only international school in the region with full CIS accreditation. GIS first gained full accreditation in 2013. Follow-up visits are made every few years to ensure high standards are being maintained. Following the recent visit, CIS praised the school for its achievements, including the excellent use of the school core values as a guide for

decision-making and programme development and the positive and supportive school climate. Inspectors also liked GIS’s quality and creatively managed professional development that is offered to teaching staff. They also highlighted the school’s enthusiastic and capable student body. The report added, “GIS is heartily commended for its commitment to the accreditation process. The seriousness with which it has worked to meet the recommendations of the visiting team is testimony to its efforts to improve and to the professionalism of its faculty and staff.” Another strength, according to CIS, is “a well operated and safe

boarding programme that meets students social and emotional needs.” CIS helps shape international education through professional services to hundreds of schools around the world. GIS’s new principal, Dinah Hawtree, said “The comments from CIS confirm what a wonderful school GIS is. Being accredited by CIS is important as it demonstrates to everyone the school’s commitment to high quality international education.” GIS is based in Ban Chang, near Pattaya. There are still spaces available for students wishing to study at the school when the new academic year begins in August. For details, visit www.gardenrayong.com.

Harbor Mall instructs kids

Harbor Mall Pattaya organized a Balance Bike seminar in the front area of the premises to teach children how to drive bicycles safely and to use the safety gears without a hitch. More than 50 boys and girls attended the event and agreed they now felt much safer on the roads than hitherto.

You are arrested The police are required by law to inform the appropriate embassy if one of its nationals is arrested, but they may not do this as quickly as you might wish. Services offered by embassies are restricted to visiting you when they can, suggesting lawyers from a list and maybe offering a translation service. Embassies won’t pay your bail or – unless you are very high profile – intervene on your behalf. You are in jail Police cells are for short-time incarceration and prisons are for serving sentences. Most embassies will visit you once a month or so, maybe less, and will contact the prison authorities if you need medication of some kind. They will also contact friends and relatives, if you wish, or suggest you make contact with a prisoners’ welfare organization in your home country. They can probably pay small sums of money into your prison account, if somebody has provided the cash, to buy extra food or commodities. You are in court Embassies do not ordinarily send a representative to any court appearance you are required to make. If you want legal representation, you or your supporters must make those arrangements and pay the fees. Embassies never pay bills of any description. Court cases in Thailand can last for months or years because of the delays built into the system. If you are accused of an offence potentially carrying the death penalty, the Thai court will appoint a public defender if you wish. You are to be deported Once you are scheduled for deportation, you must return by air to the country of the passport you used to enter Thailand. If you have contacts on the outside, they can arrange to pay for your single airticket and other expenses associated with the procedure. If you have no sources of help, your embassy will eventually arrange the airticket but may cancel your passport so that you must repay the government before being allowed to travel again. In serious cases, police officers of your home country may accompany you on the flight. You are blacklisted The courts sometimes recommend blacklisting of individuals, but the actual process is at the discretion on the Immigration Police. In some cases, for example serious visa overstaying, the length of time of blacklisting is clearly laid down. In other cases it won’t be clear and blacklisting can last from one year to 99. A prisoner has no “right” to know his blacklisting decision which is sometimes taken by the authorities after deportation. You are hospitalized Embassies will not pay your hospital bills and you are very much on your own. You need cash reserves, medical insurance or friends and relatives with a deep pocket. Some embassies do visit seriously-ill nationals and can be a useful link with friends and relatives back home. It’s wise to remember that hospital charges in private sector hospitals in Thailand are similar to those in most European countries. You are dead The role of embassies is limited to issuing a “letter of release” allowing the mortuary to hand over the body to the next of kin or preferred contact for hygienic disposal or transfer back to the home country. It goes without saying that embassies don’t contribute financially to these procedures. If the embassy can’t find anyone to pay for a cremation here, the Thai state will likely provide a pauper’s cremation or hand the body over to a volunteer association with access to a communal burial mound.

There has been a lot of publicity in recent months about driverless cars, but the practicalities are far from resolved. Fully automated cars don’t drink and drive, fall asleep at the wheel, text, talk on the phone or put on makeup behind the wheel. With their sensors and processors, they navigate roads without these human failings which all too often result in nasty accidents. But there is something self-driving cars do not cope with well – at present anyway – the unexpected. The human brain is still better than any computer at making decisions in the face of sudden, unforeseen events on the highway: a child running into the street, a swerving cyclist or a fallen tree limb. Computer algorithms can ensure that self-driving cars obey the rules of the road – making them turn, stop, slow down when a traffic light turns yellow and resume when a light turns to green from red. But this technology is unable to control the behavior of other drivers. Autonomous vehicles will need to deal with drivers who speed, pass even when there’s a double yellow line and drive the wrong way up a one-way street. Not to mention the awesome problems created by drunk drivers careering all over the road suddenly and without any decipherable pattern. One solution might be to equip cars with transponders that communicate their position, speed and direction to other vehicles. This is known as vehicle-to-vehicle or V2V communication, and it is similar to how airplanes avoid each other in the air. While promising, V2V is still early in development and it will be effective only when large numbers of vehicles with this capability are on the road. Moreover, the skies are a good deal less crowded than a typical city thoroughfare. Snow, fog, rain and other types of weather make driving difficult for humans. It’s no different with driverless vehicles which stay in their lanes by using cameras that track lines on the pavement. But they can’t do that if the road in question has a coating of snow. Falling snow or rain can also make it difficult for laser sensors to identify obstacles. A large puddle caused by heavy rain may look like blacktop to an autonomous car’s sensors. Indeed, in reports to Google and others filed with the authorities in USA, weather was the prime cause of system failures after which, or during which, human drivers had to take back control. So much for the argument put forward by early devotees of driverless cars that the human driver could take a nap whilst his vehicle was doing maximum speed on the motorway! Sadly, life can be more difficult than that. Still automakers are confident that technology will continue to improve. Mercedes-Benz already offers a car with 23 sensors that can detect guardrails, barriers, oncoming traffic and roadside trees to keep the vehicle in its lane even on roads with no white lines. A further problem, can be detours and rerouted roads. Google’s bubble-shaped self-driving cars rely heavily on highly-detailed threedimensional maps which are far more detailed than those often available on Google Maps. As any listener to morning radio can attest, there are commonly news items about detours and rerouting caused by accidents, road repairs and a host of other factors. Maps so easily become out of date – an intersection with a four-way stop might suddenly become an ordinary traffic light or even become a roundabout. Although the pioneers of automated vehicles are confident that new technologies will overcome these unknowns, the solution still awaits implementation for the time being. Self-driving cars use radar, lasers and high-definition cameras to scan the road ahead for obstacles and the images they generate are assessed by high-powered processors to identify pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. But what about potholes? They lie below the road surface and a dark patch ahead could be an oil spot, a puddle or even a filled-in pothole. Google and other companies hope more precise laser-based sensors will make it easier to distinguish between different hazards and even tell the difference between a pothole and a shadow created by an overpass. Lastly, there’s the issue of making tough decisions. In the midst of heavy traffic, a ball bounces into the road pursued by two running children. If a self-driving car’s only options are to veer right and strike a telephone poll or to hit the children, which is the better alternative? In one the children die, in the other a crash into the pole may kill the car’s occupants. Should the computer give priority to pedestrians or passengers? When a crash is inevitable, a human driver gives a spontaneous reaction in a split-second. But in a car controlled by algorithms, it is a choice which has been predetermined by a programmer. Who or what should play God in these very difficult circumstances?

Reni Hildenbrand Returns to Pattaya with her Award Winning Wines and Olive Oils by Mick and Di Barker The Food Lovers

Reni Hildenbrand is a consummate wine maker having followed her childhood passion for wine making and creating something special at Klein Rhebokskloof on South Africa’s Western Cape, which has become the home to Hildenbrand Wines and Olive Oils. By dint of sheer hard work Reni transformed the dilapidated 300 year old property into its present charming working winery, guest and country house plus olive farm. The estate’s range of wines are vegan friendly with no fining agents like gelatin or egg whites. When the farm was bought it already contained 3,000 olive trees which inspired Reni to turn her hand to olive oil. Continuing with her organic ethos the olive oils are prized for their natural cold pressing and preserving which makes these bottles a highly sought after gourmet item resulting in many medals and awards. Reni presented her wines and olive oil at a wine tasting event held at Mantra restaurant recently. Five established whites, Chenin

Blanc Unwooded and French barreled fermented launched the evening elegantly followed by a sensational nouveau Shiraz Rose and an interesting Crouchen Blanc 2015 plus two 2013 vintages of Chardonnay Barrique and Semillon Barrel Fermented wines. The chosen red wines offered a 2014 Malbec a 2014 Shiraz plus a very enjoyable Cabernet Sauvignon Barrique and

the star wine of the evening “The Duo Red Cuvee 2012.” The olive oil was sensational. Fruity with a fresh grass and olive aroma it sparkled through its gold, green colour and proved the perfect vehicle for dipping and dunking Mantra’s freshly baked bread. Creative canapés also accompanied the wine tasting complementing the vino-compilation perfectly.

SUBARU FORESTER AWD 2.0i-P The GO Anywhere Family SUV with "More Grip Less Slip"

Come hell or high water I'll take Subaru Forester with maximum visibility, space, utility and symmetrical Full Time All Wheel Drive. We do know the "Subie" fast and furious, pocketby John K. Lindgren rockets Impreza WRX Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com and WRX STi the legendary flat boxerengine rally champions and boy racers. Now, what about Subaru Forester? First, Subaru XV the smaller, popular 2.0 liter crossover XV. Entry level model priced 998,000 baht. Subaru Forester, the big brother like XV is also assembled in Malaysia by Tan Chong International for the ASEAN regional markets. This explains the competitive pricing. Our tester, the Forester Premium spec model, costs 1,398,000 baht including all the bells and whistles. Exterior: SUBARU FORESTER has got the classic, solid SUV looks. The nose with the trademark chrome accented Subaru grille the blue badge displaying the Pleiades star constellation. Headlamps with LED Day Time Running Lights including the cool vertical LED's. Side view boasts 17 inch alloys and flared wheel-arched. Notice the raised suspension with 220 mm ground clearance. The SUV rear view shows new chunky taillights and a cool rear roof spoiler. Interior: Climb in and feel the spacious lofty cabin and commanding view for the driver. A stylish, functional in-car environment featuring premium leather black upholstery and powerseats for driver and front passenger. These well bolstered, adjustable power seats make a big difference on long road trips. No low-back pain. Trust me. The dashboard (some call it fascia!) and the center console with crisp instrument graphics and big A/C buttons. The infotainment 7 inch HD touch screen connects your smartphone through Bluetooth or USB port and the clear maps in NAVI system.

On top of the dash the 6.4 inch LCD multi-function display with all driving information: ambient and A/C temperature, fan speed, time: digital and a crisp blue analog clock plus distance to empty (tank) also, average fuel consumption and current fuel consumption etc. Excellent display feature. More goodies: The cavernous XLsize cargo space with easy to operate electric tailgate withmemory function and soft close mechanism. No more slamming the tail door. Boom! For the driver, sporty super car inspired aluminum pedals and driver's foot rest. The leather wrapped multi function steering wheel which tilts up-down and telescopes in-out. Few mass market cars have both tilt/telescope mode due to cost saving. Another unique feature, the "arrow" turn signals integrated into the side view mirror surface. This keeps you more alert when making turns or shifting lanes. Safety: top 5-star EURO NCAP rating. Impressive passive safety and SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) with front-side and curtain airbags. Plus driver's side knee airbag. Engine: What makes all Subaru vehicles so special? Their famous engines like Forester's 2.0 litter naturally-aspirated (non turbo) flat-four boxer petrol motor pumping out 150 horse power and 198 Nm torque mated to a Lineartronic Subaru CVT gearbox. Fuel consumption average 12.6 km/l. Recommended fuel petrol (gasoline) or Gasohol 95. By the way the legendary German sport car Porsche also uses flat or horizontally-opposed boxer engines. Low center of gravity (GC) better handling.

Drive: The best all-round visibility in comparison to other crossover SUV's in the market. The Subaru flat boxer engine rumble is a sweet sound. Especially during acceleration using the paddle shifters, passing other vehicles at motorway speeds. When the traffic thins out. You engage to the cruise control. Our Subaru Forester road test takes destination the evergreen Phetchabun province and the mountainous Khao Kho National Park sometimes called “Switzerland of Thailand. Here temperature drops to 23 centigrade as we negotiate the serpentine roads in the dark. On a final steep descent. Press the “X-Mode” button and the Hill Descent Control kicks in. Going up the hill X-Mode again takes control of the engine and transmission without losing traction. This means no free-spinning tires when the going gets rough. Subaru calls it “Confidence in all conditions”. Verdict: Here is versatile family SUV for daily school and work runs and week-end up-country National Park sojourns. Exercise and shopping routines with enough cargo space for golf bags, skateboards and bicycles. Or the IKEA flat-pack big shopping spree. My recommendation go for a test-drive. There are 13 showrooms in metropolitan BKK region and 11 Subaru showrooms up-country.

Mick & Di PASTA PASTA The Food Lovers

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com

An Affordable Trip to Italy A culinary find awaits if you travel through Ambassador City’s impressive gates and keep going until you hit the glorious sandy beach of Na Jomtien, the azure ocean and a sparkling swimming pool. There you will find two dazzling white architect designed restaurants. The appealing white pavilion complete with clock tower, is the subject of this issue’s review Pasta Pasta. A huge terrace graces the forecourt of this charming restaurant comfortably furnished with masses of seating for that languid lunch overlooking the sea or al fresco dining under the stars. Inside the décor is elegant resonating with Italian ambiance, the colour scheme echoing their patriotic flag. Cosily upholstered red velvet seating, starched white tablecloths and green napery are set against traditional brick faced walls. The décor and menu are completed by the presence of a huge state of the art wood burning pizza oven. Chef Claudio Viale is the master chef in charge of this kitchen. His culinary travels have taken him across many continents and his knowledge of Italian cuisine is considerable. The menu is photo specific and extensive packed with Italian favourites with some culinary surprises along the way. We chose a B.490 antipasto misto for 2 (mixed

appetizers) to get under way. A generous platter of various salamis, oil-steeped vegetables, artichokes, cheese, anchovies, olives, and baby peppers stuffed with tuna filled the platter. The Provolone (a pulled curd cheese) managed to be tart and creamy at the same time. The salamis were Coppa, Milano and Napoli all top quality and served at peak condition. With this we were drinking a Tuscan Chianti, medium dry with light tannins, it proved the perfect companion for the Italian fare to come. What else could we sample now but the eponymous pasta. There is an official statistic for

pasta consumption in Italy, it is believed that the average Italian eats something like 28 kilos of pasta per year. That’s a lot of pasta so no surprises that it is so close to every Italian’s heart. Here at Pasta Pasta the extensive menu encompasses spaghetti, linguine, penne, egg fettuccine, cannelloni, pappardelle, ravioli and lasagna served with a myriad of signature sauces. Chef Claudio has created some memorable, innovative pasta dishes which are sensational. I chose the ravioli filled with spinach and cheese in white wine sauce with smoked Norwegian salmon sautéed with leek and pumpkin. The flavour combinations in this were also remarkable. On reading the ingredients it seemed a myriad of tastes to savor in one dish. It was but it worked and I loved it. Main courses run the gamut of Italian fare from fritto misto to mussels in tomato sauce to Italian pork sausages with sautéed mushrooms and baked potatoes. Meat lovers are well served with beef tenderloin with green peppercorn sauce and rib eye grilled with garlic and rosemary. We chose one of chef’s latest fish dishes, namely Sea Bass pan-fried and served with a trio of home made sauces, pesto,

mayonnaise and a herby tomato. The sum of the parts all perfectly executed together with a perfect portion of pan fried fish. I haven’t even told you about the pizzas yet. We like the fact that they come in two sizes from B.130 for a small with the large size (perfect for sharing) coming in from B.250. Toppings cover the traditional options from quattro stagioni (B.200/370) to the creative with mushrooms, prawns, sun dried tomatoes and smoked scamorza cheese. Sautéed spinach, pine nuts and heart of artichokes are also much ordered as is the popular calzone (a folded stuffed pizza). The latest addition to the portfolio is a pizza Carbonara born from tourists combining their two top dishes. Chef Claudio reiterated that all his products down to the smallest caper are imported from Italy. Attention to detail is critical, even the hydroponic salad ingredients and vegetables are

grown in chef’s restaurant garden and harvested daily making for fresh, vibrant greenery. You will not be able to resist the desserts at Pasta Pasta, we couldn’t. Before calling it a night we just had to sample, probably the most renowned pud in Europe, tiramisu. Chef Claudio’s version is exquisite. His personally made rendition, was fluffy, light with a dash of espresso and liquer - oooh my goodness, it was heavenly, plus we tried the new ice cream lava desserts which come in a multitude of mouth watering flavours but we plumped for chocolate and it was an icy bomb of pure pleasure – do try one. STOP PRESS: Mention you heard about Pasta Pasta in Pattaya Today to receive a 10% discount. Pasta Pasta is located on Ambassador City grounds at the beachfront end. Open daily from 11.30 am till 11.00 pm. Tel: (038) 255 501.

Pattaya’s Longest Serving Curry House Ali Baba was a poor woodcutter from The Arabian Nights who gained entrance to the treasure cave of the forty thieves by saying the magic words, “Open Sesame!” Here in Pattaya entry into Ali Baba’s Indian restaurant is just as rewarding. It carries the crown for the longest serving Indian restaurant having survived the fads and caprices of Pattaya’s restaurant world for 27 years. The longevity of this Indian curry house speaks volumes for the consistency of food, reasonable prices and friendliness of the staff. Indian cuisine crosses all culinary demographics and when an Australian friend suggested we dine at Ali Baba together with his Thai guest this fact was in evidence demonstrated by the three continents represented at our table. To enter Ali Baba is indeed to set foot inside a treasure trove. The stairs are lined with the swag of the fictional thieves, the gold ceilings gleam and glisten and the entire exotic décor bursts with colour and olfactory gratification. The smell, ah! the smell: pungent aromatic spices redolent with turmeric, cumin, and garam masala tantalise the sensory

organs. Is there a more welcoming mouth-watering scent to get the taste buds jumping than Indian curry ingredients? We ordered drinks, perused the menu and sat back in anticipation of the Punjabi treats to come. We raised the curtain on our dining out with an Ali Baba 20 Thieves selection of meats, seafood, chicken and Indian cheese (B.575). Tandoor roasted chicken and paneer cheese, peshwari kebab (succulent lamb pieces barbequed with spices and yoghurt), seekh kebab (skewered minced lamb kebabs), chicken minced kebabs and tandoori king prawns were (generously) stacked on to a sizzling hot plate of spiced onions and brought crackling to our table – and what a “cracker” of a dish this was! The succulence of the meats was superb and the spicing delightful. The accompanying pickles and sauces added extra sparkle and we were in subcontinent culinary heaven. All these items can be ordered separately of course together with their famous butterfly deep fried prawns (B.550), samosas, bhajis, and one of our

favourites: aloo chat (a speciality spiced potato salad). We followed this with an order of lamb vindaloo, spinach curry with paneer and aloo gobi (B.185). All had the aroma, flavours and consistency of quality that we have come to expect from this Indian eatery. We like to enjoy the curries with some of their superb breads, either naan, paratha, rotis or our preference, puri (fried flour bread). If you are unfamiliar with Indian cuisine, a good introduction would be to order a “Tali” (literally means tray). Here an array of small dishes is gathered together with breads and a dessert. They come in the vegetarian version (B.590) or the meaty kind at B.675 which would include lamb tikka, tandoori chicken, tandoori king prawns, prawn kooman, rogan josh, butter chicken, vegetable curries, garlic nam, puri, pulao rice and the famous Indian sweet, gulab jamun. A definite feast of flavours and it would certainly set you on the road to becoming an Indian food fan. Another option would be to order from their set meals for a balanced combination of dishes.

Toxic lifestyles – What about detoxification, what can we do to help our bodies? by Thonglor Clinic

As the most powerful antioxidant in the body, glutathione works around the clock to remove toxins. And yet, few people recognize its importance. Glutathione is likely to get more attention in the near future. In terms of staying healthy, it is one of the most important molecules in the body. Glutathione is a triple threat to toxins. It neutralizes free radicals, enhances the immune system and detoxifies the liver. The trappings of modern life — everything from refined foods to over-the-counter painkillers to stress — rob the body of this vital antioxidant. And, even if you’re doing everything right, aging takes a bite. Around age 45, our glutathione levels start to slip. Ultimately, those levels can dip as much as 50 percent below optimal as we age. Some scientists are now wondering if low glutathione levels aren’t partly to blame for the free-radical-induced illnesses so common in middle age and later, such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and heart disease. Gloota-what? Most glutathione is made inside the body from three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. In addition, some foods, particularly asparagus, spinach, avocado and squash, are high in a plant version of glutathione that the body converts to replenish its supply. Cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, processed foods and certain

medications deplete the body’s reserves of glutathione. Stress and toxic surroundings may pose an even bigger threat to our body’s glutathione supply. Cleanup Crew Found throughout the body, glutathione is concentrated in the liver. The body’s primary detox organ, the liver is charged with giving nutrients the nod to be absorbed and giving toxins the boot. Glutathione owes much of its detoxifying prowess to cysteine. This is why vegetables high in sulfur, including garlic and onions, have been at the heart of detoxification diets for years. Another plant substance, called cyanohydroxybutene (found in broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage) helps restock the body’s glutathione supply. Green tea and fish oil also house substances that switch on genes responsible for making glutathione. Aerobic exercise and yoga are thought to increase glutathione levels as well. Glutathione Supplementation Logically, if more glutathione means better detoxification, people with the highest levels of the powerful antioxidant should live the longest. That was the theory that drove Danish researchers to enroll 41 centenarians in a study of glutathione levels. Their results, published in the journal Age and Ageing, found that glutathione levels were highest in the healthiest seniors. Glutathione can be injected intravenously to help the liver

by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen

Symptoms: Burning or itching are the most common symptoms of spider veins.

Incidence and Causes: Nearly 70% of all women and 30% of men will develop some type of venous disorder. No one knows exactly the cause of spider veins, but several factors, including heredity, are believed to cause a person to be more likely to develop them. Oral contraceptives, hormone changes and therapy, sun exposure, and the natural aging process also may contribute to their development. Spider veins may also be related to rosacea and other trauma to the skin, or may be heredity. It may resemble a "star" with numerous small veins radiating from a center point, or they can also appear as fine, separate lines, a web-like maze, or as "branches" from a single "tree trunk." These red, blue or purple thread-like lines may develop on any part of the body, including the face, but most often appear on the thighs, calves, or buttocks. The condition is associated with increased pressure to the veins. The gold standard treatment for spider veins is laser. Laser vein removal is an easy, fast, and effective way to treat superficial veins. Laser therapy has been used in medicine for more than 30 years. Advances in technology have helped develop many different lasers. The laser uses a focused beam of light. In the treatment of veins, the wavelength of light is targeted to the pigment in the blood. The laser heats up the small vein and destroys it. The laser beam is focused and does not damage the nearby skin tissue. Over a period of four to six weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and disappears. What type of laser is used to treat spider veins? The most common laser used to treat spider veins is the Nd: YAG Laser system. It is a hand held device and also has a cooling tip to minimize the discomfort during the therapy. How does the laser work? The Nd YAG laser pierces the skin and penetrates the superficial blood vessel. The heat generated from the laser coagulates the blood inside the vessel causing it to collapse and seal. Over the next few weeks, the vessel will disappear and all the blood will be removed by the body's scavenging cells. The newer laser treatments allow the delivery of a precise dosage of energy to each blood vessel without injuring any nearby structures. The procedure is done in a doctor's office or clinic and usually takes less than 10-20 minutes. In most cases, only the very small superficial veins are treated with a laser. The majority of individuals do not require any type of anesthesia, but for those who are squeamish or anticipate pain, the physician may apply a topical anesthetic 20 minutes prior to the procedure. Most current day lasers also have a cooling system which prevents the tip of the laser from getting hot. During your treatment, you may feel a slight tingling sensation as the laser fires. If the individual feels any pain, a topical local anesthetic is applied 20 minutes before the procedure. Soon after the procedure, you may feel a slight

bump on the skin which will disappear in the next 2-4 hours. The area may also appear slightly redder and occasionally may be bruised. Are there any precautions after laser therapy? After laser therapy, it is strongly recommended that one keep away from the sun. Healing can be facilitated by wearing support hose. The pain is minimal and one may take any over the counter pain medications. After treatment, there is no down time. You can resume all of your normal activities immediately afterward. It is generally recommended that the treatments be spaced four to six weeks apart. If new veins appear, additional treatments are required for optimum results. Most patients report a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure and relief at no longer having to hide unsightly veins. The treated areas are noticeably clearer and in most cases the skin continues to improve with each successive treatment. You can see results right after the treatment but the majority of spider veins will disappear within two to four weeks, and in some cases even longer, it depends how deep the vien is. What are potential complications of laser therapy? The risks associated with laser vein therapy are minimal. Your eyes will be shielded during the treatments. Most facilities use state-of-the-art cooling systems, thus the treatments are low risk and relatively pain-free. It takes 2- 3 treatments to achieve a very good result. What causes spider veins? Spider veins are typically caused by abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessel wall. Any condition or activity that places pressure on the veins (like weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing) can contribute to their development. Spider veins increase with age and thus are quite common in the elderly. There is also a genetic basis, since spider veins do tend to run in families. In pregnancy, spider veins are quite common and have been associated with an increase in the female sex hormone, estrogen. Estrogen is known to weaken the walls of the veins and may contribute to the development of spider veins. During pregnancy, spider veins are most common in the 2nd trimester.

Tiny1 Astronomy Camera Bonx Wearable Walkie Talkie

Plenty of cameras can take pictures of the night sky, but very few were actually built specifically for it. The Tiny1 Astronomy Camera pairs a sensor that's particularly good in low-light with advanced image processing to create striking images of stars, whole constellations, and planets in far less time than a traditional DSLR. It can also take timelapse videos in 2.5K resolution, and should you have trouble finding a subject, it can show you where to point with its augmented reality, up-to-date star charts, shown on its 4.3-inch touchscreen. And unlike a DSLR, you can easily throw the Tiny in a pocket, making it far more convenient than your average stargazing rig.

IMAX Private Theatre When you're outdoors and on the move, it's less than ideal to pull out your phone in order to keep track of your group. The Bonx Wearable Walkie Talkie gets around this by pairing with your phone and letting you talk to your team with a single button press. Its oversized button is easy to tap, its wraparound design ensures it stays in place, and its water- and shock-resistant body lets it stand up to whatever you throw at it.

Just like the gargantuan screens at the local cineplex, an IMAX Private Theatre is far bigger, louder, and better than a traditional home theater setup. Modeled after IMAX's private screening room, which has played host to many filmmakers coming to see their films in IMAX for the first time, this integrated solution includes custom IMAX hardware — including state-of-the-art dual 4K projection systems, a proprietary laser-aligned sound system, and a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall screen — and consulting from IMAX specialists who work with your architects, interior designers, and installers to ensure that everything is built to the company's exacting performance standards. Available in 20-40 seat Platinum or more intimate Palais configurations.

Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show Grows Thai Boating Market Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show returns for a fifth year with the largest display of boats and lifestyle products yet. Held from November 24 – 27, 2016 at Ocean Marina in Pattaya, Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show has been a catalyst for the Gulf of Thailand's marine industry promoting the onshore facilities and offshore cruising grounds worldwide. “Since launching Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show five years ago we have seen considerable growth in marine tourism and boat use in the Gulf of Thailand. The boat show has helped to position this region as a leading marine destination in Southeast Asia. Both the number of boat owners overseas choosing Ocean Marina to base their boats and the number of Thai people buying boats in the region has increased, and this trend looks to continue,” said Scott Finsten, Harbour Master, Ocean Marina. With 22 boats up to 119 feet in length at last year's show, organisers are planning for an even bigger and better display this year, and have expanded the in-water display space to accommodate the increased interest. Early exhibitor confirmations for the 2016 show include top dealerships Simpson Marine and Boat Lagoon Yachting, both of which have secured larger exhibition space this year. These are joined by luxury Italian boat brand Azimut Yachts, Beneteau, Cranchi, CNB Yachts, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Monte Carlo Yachts, Prestige, Princess Yachts, Viking Yachts and Wider. Superyacht brands represented

at the show include Admiral and Sanlorenzo, and a large selection of brokerage yachts will also be available for viewing. “Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show continues to attract leading marine and luxury brands and 2016 looks to set a new benchmark. With increased exhibition space onshore

and in-the-water, and already many top boat brands having confirmed their attendance, we're looking forward to welcoming more than 6,000 visitors and showcasing the Gulf of Thailand,” commented Dr. Tirachai Pipitsupaphol, managing director, Ocean Property.

Sixty Eight percent of visitors to the 2015 show were Thai, a key demographic for organisers and exhibitors, and a statistic in-line with Ocean Marina's experience of a boom in the number of Thai people spending time on the water. Continued on page 4/24

Phoenix Gold Glittering Brighter! In an article I wrote back in May of 2014 titled the ‘Phoenix Effect,’ we took a good look at the residential development of homes today inside the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya, and coincident with the ‘Phoenix Effect’ article the residential development of homes inside and surrounding the Phoenix Golf Club really seemed to take off in a big way. It really is quite amazing just how much growth and activity there is at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club itself, which is going through some big and exciting developments these days. Of course the most exciting news was the Thailand King’s Cup Golf Championship through last weekend, with a handsome prize of US$750,000 awarded. For the first time, the King’s Cup was jointly sanctioned by The European Tour, which received 25 spots for its players at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club. Just the idea of having a golf event of this magnitude would have been a ‘pipe dream’ just a couple years ago. I must admit, being in the real estate business here, and particularly with my wife, Khun Supap, and I having lived at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club for more than 10 years, we can remember the rumors that were flying around just before the club was sold to its present owner. There would be buzz that someone

by Clayton Wade Managing Director

or a group was looking to buy the golf course, and all kinds of gossip about who it or they were and what they were going to do with it. There have been so many Thai’s and even big names in the international golf scene that were identified as potential buyers—including John Lloyd, husband of champion tennis player Chris Evert. After many years of rumors and speculation, the Phoenix Golf Club was finally sold by its caretaker bankers, Siam Commercial Bank, to Chanya Sawangchit, CEO, chairman of the executive board, and vice chairman of the board of directors of P. Overseas Steel Public Company Ltd. The 32-year-old company is involved with the trading of construction materials, steel and cement, as well as brick blocks to a vast number of Thailand’s major projects, supplying them with ready mixed concrete under the brand name “POC Concrete”. As a Thailand-based trading company, the P. Overseas Steel Public Co., Ltd has been involved with many of Thailand’s major high profile construction and development projects, and has grown to annual sales of more than 5 billion baht—an indication that Chanya and her companies have gained the confidence and trust of Thailand’s most prestigious construction companies. In addition to her original company,

Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com

P. Overseas Steel, Chanya also has two subsidiaries, P. Overseas International Group Co., Ltd., and P.O.C. Concrete Co., Ltd. Also within her network are P. Overseas Golden Land, Ltd., Adler Overseas Limited, Ltd., Phoenix Portland’s West Development Co., Ltd., and now P.O.C. Phoenix Golf & Country Club Pattaya Co. and the Phoenix Golf & Country Club Pattaya Co., Ltd. Over the past 30 years and through her many companies, Chanya has definitely proved herself to be a pioneer and innovator in the trade of construction materials of all types. Her long list of her accomplishments includes some of the greatest and most well known projects in Thailand, such as Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok Ring Road, MRT Purple Line and Red Line, Double Track Railway Line Project, B a n g n a - B a n g p a k o n g E x p r e s s w a y, Donmuang Toll Way, Phra Nang Klao Bridge--including various main roads in Bangkok and its perimeters, Government Complex, SCB Park, Fashion Island Shopping Center, All Seasons Place Building, Land & House, Ministry of Sciences, Ministry of Commerce, Raimon Land Projects, Central World, Suphalai Place, Central Rama II, Central Festival Phuket and Chang Cylon Patong. About three years ago Chanya began the process of purchasing the Phoenix Gold Golf Course. Hot Golf Magazine two years ago reported that the club’s purchase price was a staggering 1.6 billion baht. Chanya is certainly no stranger to the Thai media, as just two and a half years ago she was in the news for having made a Government Housing Bank deposit of 200 million baht to help rice farmers, and shortly after that she was summoned to meet with top military officials working

A very busy woman she is, but that has not stopped her for one second as she started pouring money into her new Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club acquisition even before the final papers had been signed. It was just two years ago that millions of baht were invested in landscaping Nong Nooch Garden--new trees and flowers and a completely new entrance. That was when we residents as well as golfers began to realize that ‘something had happened!’ Since then Chanya has completed the Ocean Side course, Lakeside course and Mountain course with total course makeovers…and boy do they look great; world class great! Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show Grows Thai Boating Market

“The number of Thai people enjoying the boating lifestyle has increased exponentially in the last five years. Not only are more Thais coming to Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show as a way to learn about boating and to research and buy products, but we see more Thai people chartering boats, getting out on the water and enjoying the beautiful marine playground here in the Gulf of Thailand, added Finsten. Ocean Marina's close proximity to Bangkok makes it the number one coastal destination and weekend getaway for the capital's 8+ million inhabitants. Within minutes of arriving at the marina, visitors can be on the water enjoying the 43 islands that are within one hour by boat. Having recognised this growth in boating interest and subsequent need for more berths, Ocean Marina

has undergone a phased expansion over recent years and is now, with 380 berths for boats up to 50 metres, the largest marina in South East Asia. In addition to the impressive line-up of boats, cars and luxury lifestyle exhibitors, highlights for visitors to the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show include daily yacht cruises, kayak and paddleboat trials, jetpack flying board demonstrations, games, a food and drinks festival, and the Boat and Yacht Thailand Conference. The 5th Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will take place November 24 to 27, 2016 at Ocean Marina, Pattaya, Thailand.

MEDICAL MALPRACTICE IN THAILAND

What should I do if I think I have been a victim of a Medical Malpractice? Getting a bad result from a medical procedure may not always be a proof of medical malpractice. If you suspect that you’ve been a victim of medical malpractice, the first thing that you should do is to start gathering relevant facts and documenting all the important details that you can possibly recall such as symptoms and results experienced, laboratory results, prescriptions, treatment dates, and procedures.

by Tim Whiteley

7 billion and growing

What is Medical Malpractice? Medical malpractice refers to the negligence of professional duty by a health care provider in which the treatment provided to a patient falls below the recognized standard of medical practice which results in damage, injury, or death. What is Medical Malpractice Claim? According to the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code, a person who negligently or unlawfully injures the life, body or health of another person is said to commit a wrongful act and is bound to make compensation, therefore. Medical Malpractice Claim is a demand for compensation that is filed against the health care provider who failed to meet the standards of medical practice wherein his negligent actions resulted in damages to the patient. According to the Consumer Case Procedure Act 2551 and Consumer Protection Act, any person who has been treated by medical services, whether from a government hospital or a private hospital, is defined as the consumer. Thus, if damages from medical malpractice occurred from such medical services, a Consumer Case can be filed in court. In such cases, the claimant can gain benefits with faster court procedure and without court fee.

Expat Money Corner

You should contact a qualified lawyer as soon as possible to make sure that you get proper legal advice, that your claim is filed within the time limit, and to help you obtain the legal leverage necessary in proving to the court that a medical malpractice occurred. Are there time limits for filing a Medical Malpractice case? According to the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code, a claim for damages arising from wrongful act must be filed within one year from the day when the wrongful act and the person bound to make compensation became known to the injured person, or ten years from the day when the wrongful act was committed. However if the damages are claimed on account of an act punishable under the criminal law for which a longer prescription is provided, such longer prescription shall apply. What is Informed Consent? An Informed Consent is an agreement a patient signs granting permission to a health care provider prior to a medical or surgical procedure or to a participation in a clinical study after being properly informed of the relevant medical facts, benefits, consequences, and possible health risks involved. Can I file a Medical Malpractice claim if I signed a consent form prior to a procedure? Signing a consent form does not waive your right to file a malpractice claim; you may still be able to seek compensation for damages if negligence occurred during the medical procedure. Health care providers are expected to provide the standard level of care to their patients at all times, whether you were required to sign an informed consent or not. A signed consent form does not release the health care provider from any liability. How long will it take to resolve a claim on Medical Malpractice? Medical Malpractice Claim may be settled in less than 1 year from the start of filing the case in court.

The world’s population is now more than 7 billion and continues to grow by 82 million a year. During the last half-century, the total number of people has more than doubled. Between 1960 and 2010, the world population rose from 3 billion to 6.8 billion. In other words, there has been more growth in the last 50 years than the previous 2 million years that humans have existed. Currently the rate of increase is 1.2 percent per year, which means we are on a trajectory to double again in 58 years. The extreme growth in human population – now counted by an additional billion people every 12 to 13 years — is taxing the Earth and its resources. Some people may be relatively less damaging than others, but none of us are without an ecological footprint. Everybody needs basic resources but almost all of us aspire to utilise significantly more resources than are required by our basic needs. These needs and aspirations are multiplied by a factor of 7 billion affecting the stability of the planet’s ecosphere, states the Population Media Centre. Food demand and production Putting food on the world's tables is a serious business. The United Nations' index of global food prices hit a record high recently. There have been riots over rising food prices in Algeria and Tunisia. In Sri Lanka, the army has started buying up vegetables from producers and selling them at low prices to ensure locals can get affordable meals. And prices in our own shops are reflecting a surge in world demand for essentials ranging from beef to wheat. British food costs are likely to rise short term after the EU referendum due in no small part to the Pound dropping in value which affects the cost of imported food, as we only produce about 60 percent of our food needs. Some of this increase in prices reflects short-term shortages after poor harvests and the effect of commodity speculators. But there is also a longer-term trend of rising prices as consumers around the world want better, more protein-rich diets. Investing in companies that help meet a growing demand for food and farming products could prove both ethical and fertile for participants. It takes 7 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of beef and 4 pounds of grain to produce 1pound of pork. As the middle class in the emerging world gets richer, there is a greater demand for meat and hence for grain and feed. Similarly, higher wealth is boosting demand for agricultural products ranging from cotton to coffee. One option for investors is to join the speculators and try to profit directly from the growth in commodity prices but this is risky. Many feel following the agricultural theme by investing in shares of agricultural businesses is a better option than the unpredictable and volatile commodity futures markets.' Specialist funds invest in companies worldwide that are linked to agriculture such as fertiliser producers and farm machinery manufacturers. Some also buy into firms that are further down the food chain, such as processors and even consumer food companies. Farmers have to utilise higher-yielding seeds and more machinery, as well as fertiliser to boost production. One fund has a narrow focus on buying into companies that are directly involved with agriculture. Some like a broader base, looking to invest "from field to fork". This means food processing companies and some infrastructure projects can be included. Mazda counters industry doldrums with new advanced technology Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd recently revealed its unprecedented market success of the company’s business operations in the first half of 2016; Mazda posted new vehicle sales of 21,000 units of its entire model range, a 25.7 percent growth rate which exceeded expectations – and more importantly catapulted Mazda to the third best selling brand in the assembler car segment of the Thai automobile market. Mazda’s overwhelming success was attributed to customer confidence in the automaker’s unique brand-building strategies which highlights world-class quality of Mazda with the underlying concept

of Skyactiv technology. Mazda will introduce new models and its advanced technology in the latter half of 2016 comprising of three models to spearhead its annual sales target of over 42,000 units. Hidesuke Takesue, president of Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd, said, “The current overall vehicle market in Thailand is feeling the effects of the economic downtrend since the end of 2015. The first six months averaged vehicle sales of about 60,000 units due a barrage of internal and external factors. The first half of 2016 saw total vehicle sales of about 370,000 units, while the latter half is expected to be brighter with a

volume of 410,000 units.” Hidesuke added, “Mazda is confident that the industry will absorb demand of over 780,000 units by year’s end owing to positive factors which will drive the total vehicle market to reach the forecasted target.” That said, research results by Mazda revealed that consumer behavior is experiencing a paradigm shift – demand for an automobile capable of delivering a complete range of multi-purpose functions that focus on discerning customer requirements. Customers research product data, conduct comparisons and carefully though-out purchase decisions; or are extra careful in their decision making, while pay interest in the technical details of the vehicle. Mazda is still adamant in its ability to achieve annual sales volume of over 42,000 units. The local economy is showing signs of improvement starting from the start of the 2nd quarter via new model introductions to the market; in conjunction with more aggressive and effective Aftersales policies which emphasize personalized service for customers as the top priority aimed at strengthening the Mazda brand and transforming Mazda as the automobile brand

Youth Focus Implementing values into a school curriculum by Edward Emmett Most early years schools around the world follow the same curriculum design which include social and emotional, creative, environmental, physical, literacy and numerical development. Although the curriculum we follow at Mooltripakdee International School MIS) has a number of learning outcomes, the main area I believe has a significant importance and requires extra focus is social and emotional development linking the children’s interests, ideas and concerns into all learning areas of the curriculum. In my teaching practice I incorporate positive education into my curriculum to support social and emotional development. Positive education is defined as education for

both traditional skills and for happiness. The fundamental goal of Positive Education is to promote flourishing or positive mental health within the school community. Flourishing is defined in three components which are emotional wellbeing, social well-being and

psychological well-being. It is recommended to implement programs supporting positive education from the early years as experiences from childhood can lead to positive and negative effects in adult life. There should be a balance of adult-led

and child-led activities in the classroom using both an indoor and an outdoor environment. Early education guidance suggests that implementing Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) personal, social and emotional development into a classroom would lead to cooperative play, understanding the need for sharing, expressing feeling and emotions, exploring new activities, being able to ask for guidance and adjusting behaviors to different situations. One key factor for any international school to think about is the differences in the children’s native language and background. This has to be considered, for example, differences in culture can lead to differences in behaviour in the classroom. It is important for the students to feel welcome in the classroom and although English will be the primary spoken language throughout the curriculum, children will

GIS celebrates record IB diploma results by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona Records came tumbling down at Garden International School (GIS) as this year’s International Baccalaureate results were revealed. GIS had a 100 percent pass rate for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, the world’s top course for 18-year-olds. It means the IB graduates are now looking forward to starting degrees at some of the world’s top universities. As well as having an unbeatable 100 percent pass rate, the students achieved a points’ average of more than 34 out of 45, well above the global average. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

not be discouraged to use their native tongue to communicate and express. At MIS I like to teach cross-curriculum lessons. For example, a class could take place where an early years group is making an African drum from recyclable materials. The children will be learning about international culture and environmental importance while also using creative development to design the drum. Numeracy, social, and physical development could be included in the class using the drum to dance and play music in the classroom Mooltripakdee International School uses the local community in conjunction with the curriculum to teach different types of theme work throughout the academic year. In my experience teaching early years using the theme of community helpers I can definitely see positives in involving parents and the local public in the classroom environment. Parents will have the opportunity to lead classroom lessons and teach the children about their professions. The school will have excursions to the local

hospital, fire station, police station and the post office during the academic year. Not only will the children enjoy learning in a different real world environment but it helps the school build new positive relationships with the local community. Another way to get the parents and the local community involved in the curriculum while also celebrating diversity is to teach the children about different cultural festivals and celebrations. As our school is located in Thailand, the local community can teach the children important traditions and customs. Children from different backgrounds will attend my ideal school so it is important that everybody feels welcome. All parents and children will have the opportunity over the academic year to teach others about their cultures and traditions and share their experience with other parents, children, teachers and the school community. This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories All we know for sure is that Andrew and his wife Abby Borden were battered to death in separate rooms at the family home in Fall River, Massachusetts, in August 1872. At the subsequent trial, Andrew’s daughter Lizzie was acquitted of the murders. The witnesses contradicted others and themselves and the murder weapon never did turn up. Legend says that they were killed with eighty one blows of an axe, but father was hit only eleven times

with a heavy-edged weapon and Abby several times more. The scene was a bloody mess to say the least. Not long afterwards police found an axe but the handle was missing. The prosecution claimed the handle had been broken off and burned because it was bloodstained, yet one police officer said he had actually seen the handle and a forensic expert said there was no way the axe could have been wholly cleaned of blood in such a short time.

Was Lizzie Borden framed for murder?

Even lesbian lust has been suggested Three days after the murders Lizzie burned one of her blue dresses, claiming she had spilt paint on it. But the witnesses once again failed to agree what type of dress she had been wearing that day – dark blue or light blue, floral or plain. Although police were still in the house, they failed to stop Lizzie and ask what she was carrying in a bundle. Shortly after the murder, the maid Bridget left the house to summon the police and some witnesses said she was carrying a bundle which nobody checked. So the bloody dress could have been disposed of by the maid. Certainly either Bridget or Lizzie could have committed the murders and hidden the evidence. Bridget was washing windows at the time, or said she was, and there was ample time for Lizzie to kill her relatives whilst the maid was at the other end of the large house. Lizzie gave conflicting answers to the question where she was as the axe blows rained down. Initially she said she had been in her room, later in the basement, and at the inquest she claimed she had

been eating pears in the barn. As for motives for the killing, it’s take-your-pick time. Mr. Borden was apparently going to change his will and Lizzie, who was Abby’s step-daughter, was rumored to be getting a mere pittance. But nobody could find any will whatsoever, old or new. One newspaper revealed that Lizzie was pregnant with the result that Mr. Borden tried to kick her out. A major problem with this theory is that Lizzie was known to be having a menstrual cycle at the time of the murders, which makes pregnancy an unlikely condition. The man who made this odd claim was not contactable. He had gone to Canada and had conveniently died in a train accident. There’s also the theory that Mr. and Mrs. Borden were spiteful people who were also thoroughly nasty. One of the richest men in New England, Mr. Borden was so “tight” that he even cut the feet off corpses so that they would fit into shorter coffins in his funeral home. Abby never accepted Lizzie as her step-daughter and was at continual loggerheads

with her as both competed for the pittances which father doled out to run the house. Food poisoning was common in this family and the doctor was a frequent visitor to the household. Some say that an intruder slipped into the house and committed the murders. Or maybe the culprit was John Borden, father’s illegitimate son, who was known to be violent. We must go on reminding ourselves that Mr. Borden was both rich and ungenerous, a likely target for strangers or relatives needing cash. Others say Bridget the maid committed the foul deeds and disposed of the murder weapon and her dress whilst carrying out her domestic duties under the noses of the police. But most say Lizzie did it. She could have been angry with her parents over money or perhaps she fell into a dreamlike state during her menstrual cycle and couldn’t remember later what she had done. There is some likelihood Lizzie was a thief as she was arrested for shoplifting several years after her famous trial. Or

was she actually having a gay affair? Lizzie and the couple were found in bed together by one of the senior Bordens. There is no direct evidence, but supporters point to the fact Lizzie never married. It seems likely that Lizzie did murder her parents but we don’t know why. The chances of a stranger coming into the house and not being seen by either Lizzie or Bridget seem remote. Either Lizzie did it, or she looked the other way whilst Bridget struck the blows. Bridget gave a deathbed confession years later and said she had tried the help the guilty party, Lizzie, at the trial. Lizzie was acquitted of the murders in court after a one hour’s deliberation by the jury. Though ostracized, she continued to live in Fall River until her death in 1927. Her sister Emma died a few days later and the two were buried in the family plot, not far from the murdered couple. Whether Mr. and Mrs. Borden turned in their graves has not been recorded for posterity.

This & That Your Pattaya Horrorscope

by Karen Burns, www.UrbaneWomen.com

What makes a marriage work? Give your marriage a boost with these 7 tips Weddings are easy, marriage is hard work. It’s one thing to walk down the aisle and say “I do,” but keeping your marriage alive year after year is a whole other ball of wax. I’ve often heard it said that marriage is a 50/50 proposition, but I disagree. I think it’s 100/100! Both partners have to give 100% all the time. With effort from both of you, it’s possible to not only make your marriage last, but to make it thrive. These are the 7 secrets we learned from people who have successful marriages: 1. Use humor when things get hard

An easy and effective way to strengthen the bond between you and your husband is to stop taking everything seriously. Instead of looking for insults or hidden meanings, think about what you can do to make each other smile. When you dwell on the bad, no one is happy. Make each other laugh to create a happy, loving atmosphere. 2. Tell your husband when he does good

It’s so easy to see the bad and criticize; but the good stuff often slides by unnoticed. When couples get into the habit of only seeing the negative, it creates a hostile environment in the home. Instead, look for things your husband has done right – then tell him how much you appreciate it and how happy it made you feel. He’s much more likely to take out the garbage again if he feels appreciated for it.

4. Shake up your routine Life gets busy what with jobs, kids and obligations; it makes it easy to settle into a routine. While routines can be a great thing for making sure the important stuff gets done, routines also have a tendency to turn into a rut. And ruts are hard to get out of. So make sure you don’t fall into a rut! Plan little surprises every so often – send the kids to the sitter and go out on a date; plan a weekend picnic at the park; or spend a weekend at a nearby hotel. By planning a special occasion just for the two of you, your husband will feel loved and will know how important the marriage is to you. 5. Tell him that you love him As obvious as it might seem, there are many couples that forget how important it is to tell your feelings out loud. They say that actions speak louder than words, but the truth is that the words are pretty darned important too. Never assume that he knows – tell him! 6. Always be encouraging Even when things are going well, people need the occasional encouraging word. Being supportive of your spouse does much to bring the two of you closer together. You’ll both be happier if you motivate each other to succeed. 7. Create moments of intimacy

It can be difficult to make time for intimacy in our rush and over-scheduled lives. But intimacy is such a vital part of a marriage, it must be a priority. Simple things like holding hands while you watch a movie, hugs hello and kisses good-bye, and of course, making love, all help to make both partners feel respected and loved. Make an effort to include time for intimacy by scheduling it on your calendar if you have to! Nothing else on your schedule should matter as much. There are good times and bad times in every marriage. But you can multiply the good times by making just a few small changes in your relationship. Make the effort to keep conflict at a minimum, and you’ll be able to keep your marriage growing strong.

and

( Jan 23-Feb  Aquarius 22) You need to dress up

your residence so that it matches your personality. This likely means painting all the interior walls black and having pictures of Edgar Allan Poe hung on every door. You should think seriously about next year’s New Year resolution now as you may not make it to the end of December. Love and romance are in the heavens but this won’t affect you in the slightest. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Stick close to home and try to avoid going outside for the foreseeable future. This is the only way to stop people laughing at you behind your back as it’s not much fun gossiping when you have disappeared. Beware of answering the door to strangers as they do not have your interests at heart, but you may make an exception if it’s an ambulance. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) With Mars again in the ascendant it is very likely that you will be taking a ride in a very expensive car in the near future. It is possible that you may have won a competition with a fashion magazine and are being driven to the airport in style, but it’s more probable that the vehicle in question will be a hearse. Love is in the air but it will be too late in your case. Taurus (Apr23-May22) Getting together with relatives may spark a new interest in you. For example you could consider flattering aunty Dorothy to try and get back in her will. But you need to concentrate very hard on what you are doing as your own stupidity is the reason why you were crossed out of the will in the first place. Your lucky number is GHK/5691208543 which is unfortunate as you will never be able to remember it. Gemini (May23-Jun22) Your loneliness is inevitable as you a complete bore and have a tendency to cross-dressing. Because you are very ugly it is just a fact of life that any clothes you wear look just awful. The stars are indeed against you in this life and you are unlikely to fare better in the next one. By all means take up a new interest or hobby but, in the name of all that’s holy, don’t turn to nude bathing. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) The problem is that you just can’t stop eating, usually all the wrong things. You are the sort of person who goes to a weight watchers’ meeting and then eats double fish and chips on the way home. Because you are a very unintelligent person you are unlikely to benefit from lipo-surgery which, in your ignorance, you take to be a sexual technique.

3. Be Kind to One Another

We sometimes forget the importance of simply being kind to our spouses, and how much that simple act can improve the quality of a relationship. Greeting him with a smile when he comes home, saying “thank you” for the little things or doing some little chore that you know he hates to do – these are the small acts of kindness that make a marriage last.

by Professor Blunt

by Madam Zyra

(Jul23-Aug22) Don’t get  Leo involved with rumours today and tomorrow as they will be mostly about you and the result will be embarrassing. An older friend will try to dump responsibilities on you but you must resist as you know nothing about abortion and will get into a lot of trouble with the authorities. It’s a good idea to pick up a new pastime but remember that you need two dice to play Monopoly. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) Friendships look promising with The Milky Way being observable once again, but you must be prepared for a big disappointment. The new person in your life may be a bi-sexual so do check under his or her arms before becoming too involved. Irritating travel delays can be expected on Thursdays for the next few months, but this should not bother you as you seldom go anywhere interesting. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) You must not, under any circumstances, reveal any secrets to an acquaintance this weekend. There are worrying signs that somebody is trying to trick you or cause you unhappiness by publishing details about you on Facebook. Also please be on your guard against cameras eyeing you, especially if you are having a scratch or just emerging from the toilet. You can’t be too careful these days. Scorpio (Oc t23-Nov22) Redecorating your home would be a wonderful way for you to find happiness and fulfillment, so it’s a great pity that you can’t tell one end of a paintbrush from the other. The other problem is that you are probably colour-blind. You also have a nagging personal problem of a sexual nature which you can’t discuss with your partner as you don’t have one. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Research will pay off and precision and detail will most certainly make a difference. Al Capone would never have been able to rob banks if he hadn’t studied the maps first. An emotional matter from your past will surface mid-week and this is likely to cause you acute problems as your history of court appearances becomes known to a wider public. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan22) Scrutinize any free sexual offer made this week for any hidden snags. Remember that sex for money can be a lot cheaper than sex without money. Although a new relationship is heralded by the stars, the consequences can be negative rather than positive. Thus there is absolutely no point in becoming involved with someone who has a dread disease or is good at forging signatures. You must be on your guard.

Local Sports Sal Does It Again ! Growling Swan – Stableford (Burapah) After a night and early morning of heavy rain and storms, a field of 25 golfers headed out to Burapah in overcast conditions. The rain cleared just in time as we teed off. With no sign of any breeze it was quite humid. Course A followed by B was played, with the pick, clean and place rule enforced due to overnight rain. The course had recently hosted a professional tournament, thus the rough was very thick and the greens quite fast. Greetings were handed out to Rob Cross, Rocky Lawson, Peter McDonald, Kevin Smith, Greg Proctor&Big Dave Fletcher over for a short visit. A Grade was won by Sal Brizzi with an excellent 38 point score, off his low handicap of 4. Denis Steele was only one behind Sal with 387 points to fill second place, with Greg Proctor three shots behind to be placed third. B Grade was taken out by way of a countback by Andrew ”Turtle” Allan who scored the win on a countback from Jayson Schembri, both with 38 points. Andrew never had a wipe, and said it was probably his best round ever. Another countback saw Sandy Leiperclaim in third spot with 31 points, from Lindsay Slender, whose 2 wipes on the last 2 holes would not have helped! Results: A Grade (0-21) 1st- Sal Brizzi (4) 38 points 2nd - Denis Steele (13) 37 points 3rd - Greg Proctor (17) 34 points B Grade (22-36) 1st- Andrew Allan (30) 38 points C/B 2nd - Jayson Schembri (22) 38 points 3rd - Sandy Lieper (22) 35 points C/B NTP’s A3- Rob Cross A6 - Martin Kempton B3 - Jayson Schembri B8 - Denis Steele

Pattavia Stableford (White Tees) A&B Only six players turned out for this fine venue with its perfectly presented course of pristine fairways and well manicured greens. Our players elected to go off the white tees which was over 6800 yards making the course very difficult to reach the greens in regulation. One reason our members give this venue a miss is their buggy policy of "pay for 18 holes but you can only use 14 as the first and last holes on each nine are no go zones." Rab McDonald did a fine job of holding Geoff Parker at bay beating him on a count back on the final six holes by two shots.

Today’s winners, Andrew Allen and Sal Brizzi (Foo has returned) Longest Putt’s A9 - Lindsay Slender B9 - Jayson Schembri Back at the Growling Swan, we enjoyed a spicy chicken and mushroom meal cooked by the girls. Alex Field let D-For off his chain to collect donations, the Swan’s players and punters are a very generous bunch and keep giving to D-For. All are thanked for their continued contributions to assist the needy children of Pattaya. For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage women to play. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 150 3086. Bowls The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Sundays at 10 am for open grass bowling at The Retreat. The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is less than 400 baht so great value for a day out.

Warberg On Top at Mountain Shadow by Derek Brook

Mountain Shadow – St Time again for the Tropical golfers to try their skills at Mountain Shadow, a scenic and deceptively tricky course with a couple difficult par-3 holes, and enough jungle and water to test even the best. Sixteen golfers met at the BJ Holiday Lodge to assemble and get their fill. Worries about the weather go daily this time of year, and hoping for the best we all set out. Eventually, and we do mean eventually, all golfers made it to the correct course. Does that mean someone went to the wrong one? Our lips are sealed – for now, Dick. Nevertheless all were ready on the first tee in time. During the round it went from cloudy, to just the slightest rain, to hot and sunny, and back to cloudy, something for everyone. Mt. Shadow is in good to excellent condition now. To look for

faults, about 3-4 greens had patches and creeper weeds were too common, but for the most part fairways and greens were very good. No excuses there and the scores showed that, coming in pretty good for the number of golfers. The top of the mountain showed Dick Warberg (CH 24) proudly displaying his 40 points. Dick is also on a runaway to be Golfer of the

Month. Stay tuned two rounds to go including the Monthly Medal. Very near the peak was Gerd Riedler (9) with 38 off his impressive handicap, and moving down the slope was John Perrel (17) with 37, Mashi Kaneta (17) with a fine 36, and thanks to a long par 3, Alan Sullivan (11) with 35 points. Congrats to all. Near Pins: Gerd Riedler, John Pierrel and Alan Sullivan.

Near Pins: Les Hall, Neil Carter and George Cooney. Navy Stableford (White Tees) Only eight players today with many being put off by the heavy rains the previous night and the course advising us that no buggies off the pathways rule was in force. Despite having called before to enquire if the rate quoted had changed because it was a Buddha Day and being told that there was no change, on arrival we were charged the weekend rate and were told we had spoken to the wrong office when calling. The course played long as there was no run on the ball and Geoff Parker beat Jimmy Carr by one point. Eastern Star Stableford (White Tees) Nine players travelled down Sukhumvit road to a course that has blossomed after the recent rains and was back to its former glory. Not too much run on the fairways but the greens were good. Gerry Cooney cleaned up on the day with a win and the only two near pins while many others were finding the going tough with some poor scores being recorded. Results: 1st - Gerry Cooney (17) 33 points 2nd - Rab McDonald (17) 31 3rd - Geoff Parker (14) 31 oco Near Pins: Gerry Cooney (2) Note: The Bunker Boys play out of The M Club located 100 meters up Soi 14 off 3rd Road and no prior booking is required. We welcome new players who can merely turn up by 9:30 am on any Monday, Wednesday or Friday and enjoy a game with us. Transport is arranged which departs at 10 am for a booked tee time at 11 am. Pattana (Stableford) This is another course that is becoming a regular on our schedule. Not too far from Pattaya, it is a very fine course of three nines and a clubhouse that is for me the best on any course. Of course it does not make it the cheapest of courses but here you get all that you pay for. On this day we had agreed a Tuesday sport rate with the course and had agreed to play on the Wednesday, also a local special day off. Thanks to the course and because of this we had quite a good turnout. Not often you can get a great deal and a great course at the same time. At present it is raining all over the place and it only seems a few days ago everywhere was as dry as a bone. On the drive up there the roads were very wet and as we went a ‘Mashi Route’ the back roads proved deep in water in places and we even went through a flooded stream, a different drive up there. The book in these days has got quicker and we were soon booked in and out to the first tee. The play for the day

Winner and second with one of BJ’s finest was to be the A & B nines and as it had rained so much, the carts were to be driven only on the cart paths. Not too bad if you hit the ball straight, or have a slice as a right hander, but can be a bit difficult if the ball is the other side of the fairway. The course was wet and in some places very soggy, but all in all, the course was in very good condition with grass on the fairways and greens that were fast and true. Major problem was that with the rain of late it got very hot and humid, still what a great day out. Round over, it was a quick

shower and a bite to eat then back to home base. Soon into the results we saw that we had some good scores and as we were playing ‘course handicaps’ it was nice to see. Winner on the day was George King with a fine 39 points ahead of John Pirelle in second with 38 points. We then had Takeshi Hakozaki in third with 37 points ahead of a countback on 36 points that saw John Anderson in fourth with 36 points over Derek Brook and Dick Warberg. Then time for an early night. T.T.F.N. Near Pins: Dick Warberg, Brian Parish and John Pirelle.

Local Sports Golfers Paradise! by Steve Ellison

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Summer solstice has passed and we are losing a couple of minutes of daylight every day. We had no alcohol at The Golf Cub for two nights this week as we celebrated Buddhist Lent and cleaned up our livers for a change. We still managed a good turnout for today as 20 golfers joined the comp. Green Valley is in great condition these days and some say it has never been so lush. John and Jeff at the St. Andrews Golf Centre always look after us before and after the round so pop in to see them for lessons or equipment or a beer when you are there. Thirty nine was the best we could do out here today and the affable Aussie Gary Emmett rose to the occasion. We also say buon giorno to Louis Ventimiglia who is back with us for a 10 day stint, and Louis makes his mark with a 36 today. Va bene! Kev Hamilton knows this course well and 35 points ties him with regular Mark Wood to share third place honours. Don’t forget Bob Catlow who got the Caddy Smile near pin out there today on the testy 16th. Results: 1st –Gary Emmett (17) 39 points 2nd – Louis Ventimiglia (25) 36points T-3rd – Kevin Hamilton

Challenging weekend in Hungary for Sandy Stuvik

(17) 35 points T-3rd – Mark Wood (7) 35 points Pattaya C.C. –Stableford – White Tees A departure from our regular schedule saw us with a last minute booking change to Pattaya C.C. for our comp. The course was well received by our three groups and reports from the lads noted it was in pretty good condition. As usual, the front nine played better than the back nine. The new clubhouse always has rave reviews and the food and drink are properly priced. Capt. Phil found his way from fairway to podium today and 34 Stableford points were required for a third place slot. Not only that, he had the audacity to bag our Caddy Smile near pin as well! There’s Louis V. (not Vuitton) again at the second tier as Lou shoots his handicap for 36 points. Visiting from Oz and TGC house guest Bruce Miller ran away with first today as he finished three strokes ahead of the field with 39 points. Brucie is enjoying his stay with us, but we just need to get him out of bed in time for that 60 second commute to the van. Results: 1st –Bruce Miller (7) 39 points 2nd – Louis Ventimiglia (25) 36 points

Phil Smedley, Gary Emmett and Mark Wood ruled the day 3rd – Phil Smedley (14) 34 points Eastern Star– Stableford – Yellow Tees We got the two fully loaded vans out right on time and set our sights south for the comp at Eastern Star. This is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course and an interesting layout. Unfortunately, the greens were still on the sandy side but like they say…same for everyone! Loads of putts went short today so scoring was mediocre at best, and that was playing from the yellow tees! This can be a tough course if you let it, and those little fingers of water that invade from the sides are a good challenge. There are some stunning golf holes here and the fairways were in perfect nick. Weather on the day was quite nice and we had a good sea breeze to keep things cool. Last week Steve Wentford had his best ever round in Thailand with a 43 at Khao Kheow, and now shares the

win with his 36. Wayne Martin joins Stevie at the top level with Lasse Pettersen getting third place with a 32 point card. Results: T - 1st –Steve Wentford (13) 36 points T - 1st- Wayne Martin (10) 36 points 3rd – LassePettersen (24) 32 points Thank you for supporting us and see you on the first tee! Brazilian Footballer Supports GIS Stars by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona

A Brazilian international footballer helped students from Garden International School (GIS) celebrate their sporting success. The 3rd annual Sports Awards Evening was held at GIS just before the end of the school year. To make the event even more prestigious, the special guest was Brazilian international footballer Leandro de

Oliveira da Luz. He gave a speech telling students to do their best, and then handed out the awards, signed autographs and had his photograph taken with many students. Leandro played four matches for the Brazil Olympic squad at the Pan American Games in 2003, scoring in a 4-0 victory by Brazil against Colombia. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya.

The fourth round of the GP3 Series took place at the Hungaroring Circuit just outside Budapest, in Hungary. The circuit had been fully resurfaced since the last time the GP3 Series raced there last year. Sandy was feeling ready for the challenge after his strong qualifying in Silverstone two weeks ago. Qualifying took place on Saturday morning. Sandy Stuvik and the Trident Team had a positive Free Practice session on Friday, and felt confident for the day's qualifying. However, Sandy was very unlucky in this qualifying session, after having the red flag intrude his run on the second set of new tires, this meant he would not get the best performance from them and would thus end the session in 21st place. "We had the potential to be in the top five, but we were just really unlucky and it didn't go our way today. It will be a very difficult weekend from here."

Starting from the back in race one, Sandy had a good start and managed to get a few positions up. Unfortunately the first few laps would be the only chance to overtake, as the new asphalt on the Hungaroring circuit combined with the Medium compound Pirelli tire meant that there would be very little degradation and therefore no overtaking. Sandy finished the race in 18th position. "Just a very processional race today, not a lot to do after the first few laps when everything settles down it's almost impossible to overtake at this circuit and it's something we expected." The second and final race of the weekend saw Sandy start and finish in 18th position, almost an identical repeat of yesterday in a race that saw virtually no overtakes. "Similar race to yesterday, there isn't much to do and it feels very disappointing when you know you have the car to be fighting for podiums. We will work hard to make sure our qualifying in Hockenheim next weekend puts us much higher up the grid." Sandy is sponsored by the Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand.

Leandro presented the trophies at the Sports Awards Evening.

You & Your Pets Morning Breath

Isn’t it wonderful to be nudged awake by your furry friend, whether it’s a dog licking your chin or a cat kneading your chest? Except when their lively “good morning” greetings are accompanied by their deadly bad breath: the bane of many pet owners. Halitosis usually is a result of periodontal disease,

common to about 85 percent of all dogs and cats. As the disease progresses, the smell worsens. To counter the problem, your pet must have a complete teeth cleaning at the veterinarian. Subsequently, you can brush his teeth and provide dental chews between cleanings. Note, however, that bad breath might be the result of other medical conditions such as bacterial infections, fungal overgrowth, or even cancer, diabetes or kidney disease. An experienced veterinarian can often differentiate the uremic breath of kidney disease from the ketone breath of diabetes, but for most that diagnosis requires blood work. Lastly, bad breath can be diet related, especially if your cat is on a strong-smelling fish-based diet or (sorry to say) your dog is into eating feces. If the halitosis doesn’t bother you, you might ignore it. Just know that it might be a symptom of something serious and that in most cases bad breath is highly treatable.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

What to do when… Do you know what to do if your dog eats something with sharp edges or ingests a long piece of string? Bread to the rescue. Dogs have been known to swallow sharp bone shards and even things like pins and needles—any of which can damage the gastrointestinal tract and perhaps be fatal.

So immediately feed your pet some bread. The bread can encase the foreign material, allowing it to pass more safely through the GI tract. It can also help protect the esophagus from harm if your dog eventually vomits. Similarly, if your furry friend ingests a long piece of string, yarn, or thread that becomes stuck in his throat or elsewhere in his GI system, again give him some bread. The bread can help the material wad up into a clump and pass through the GI tract. But left untreated, the strand could interfere with proper intestinal workings or even cut through the intestinal wall and cause peritonitis. However, if Fido vomits a couple of times, has profuse diarrhea, is in pain, or becomes very lethargic, skip the bread and head straight to the vet.

A cat’s eyesight is both better and worse than humans. It is better because cats can see in much dimmer light and they have a wider peripheral view. It’s worse because they don’t see color as well as humans do. Scientists believe grass appears red to cats.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Tiny Tabby

This small tabby kitten is one of 5 lovely babies that arrived just this week. There are 3: this lovely grey colour and 2 stripey ginger ones. They were rescued from one of our local temples along with their mum Gypsy. By the time you read this article they should be old enough to be re-homed.

Gypsy

This lovely 3 coloured mum was rescued along with her 5 babies from one of our local temples. She is a very loving girl who has done a great job looking after her babies. She will be neutered in a few weeks time once her babies have stopped feeding from her.

Charlie

Charlie is one of our special cases: he is stone deaf, blind in one eye and has only limited vision in the other. Because of his disabilities he must have a secure place to live, somewhere that he cannot escape from. Also, he can only go outside when supervised He stays in an outdoor wooden cat house by day and has a big indoor cage at night.

Muffin

Muffin is one of our lovely mums. Her babies went to new homes some years ago. She is a quiet soul who prefers the company of people to other cats and so would suit someone who would prefer to have just one cat in their family. Please consider giving her the loving new home that she deserves.

Cat Corner Tip Not Always Purrfect

Going to the Dogs...

The amount of time it takes for a dog to "do its business" is directly proportional to outside temperature plus the suitability of the owner's outerwear. ~Betsy Cañas Garmon

A kitten's purr is a complex emotional signal that is designed to communicate with other cats and to us humans as well. Purrs can be a sign of contentment and general well-being, but they can also be an indication of an injury or illness. When in doubt, check the kitten's body language.
