Foreigner tracking confusion

A

decision has been made for most foreigners in Thailand compulsorily to use special SIM cards in their mobile phones. Initially, the rule was said to apply to foreign tourists and to one year visa holders for work, marriage or retirement. The secretary general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) said the move was to enhance national security but needed further discussion and would take six months to introduce. However, a government spokesman subsequently stated that the requirement would apply to tourists but not to “expats” although no definition of the term was given. Mobile operators can preset some technical features in SIM cards to ensure that they can always track users who will not be able to turn off this function. The NBTC claims that the policy is not a restriction of foreigners’ rights as they will be tracked by the authorities only if they are criminal suspects under a court order. However, Thai

nationals will not be subject to the new regulation “as we can already track Thais”. The NBTC announcement has set off a wave of comments, especially in the social media, about the desirability and practicality of the measure. Many bloggers feel that this is one more anti-foreigner move after the recent decision to introduce a new immigration form for visa extensions which requires personal information such as

hangouts, vehicle ownership and local bank account details. Although the NBTC has claimed that Malaysia and Singapore are both due to introduce the new SIM card innovation, it is not clear that these neighboring countries currently have the necessary technology or the political will to do so. It is not clear how the Thai authorities would enforce the ruling. Some commentators believe that free “tracking”

SIM cards would be handed out on incoming flights or given at immigration entry points nationwide. Such a procedure is already used by several countries, for example Sri Lanka, but as a public relations and welcoming gesture without tracking implications. But the Thai authorities have not yet given a commitment that the new SIM cards would be free. Continued on page 6

Pedophile campaign diversifies A UN-backed report finds that child sex tourism has spread to every corner of the world and that the scourge is actually being helped by new technology now available. “A Global Study on Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism” stresses that the spread of communications technology is facilitating abuse at every step by helping offenders groom and procure children using social media channels and by allowing them to spread abuse materials through encryption and the “dark web”. An allied problem is organized cybersex: webcam child sex tourism in which youngsters perform sexual acts in front of a camera directed by the abuser.

The traditional view of the foreign pedophile was that he was a wealthy white man visiting certain locations in Southeast Asia. But the report suggests that this perception is largely outdated. Cities such as Bangkok and Pattaya, which were popular with abusers in the past, are now less attractive thanks to ongoing police crackdowns and the increased likelihood of arrest. The report’s authors say that these days, victims are more likely to be targeted by local or regional travellers - such as Japanese, Chinese or South Korean tourists - who are present in much greater numbers. There is evidence of children being bought for sex in Myanmar and Laos, countries which

have a reputation for weak law enforcement in this type of offence. The study says, “Twenty years ago it might have been possible to sketch a rough global map showing where international travelling sex offenders were from but today the distinctions between countries of origin and countries of destination are blurring.” Thus Europe itself, once the main source of pedophile tourists, is now emerging as a destination, especially in central and eastern European nations which lack effective child protection laws. Poor countries in Latin America and North Africa, which have seen a huge expansion in international

travel, often neglect women and children’s civil rights. Dorothy Rozga, executive director of ECPAT International which oversaw the report said, “This is the largest bank of information ever gathered on the issue and shows that exploitation in travel and tourism has expanded across the globe, outpacing attempts to stop it.” The report stresses that Thailand has taken significant steps forward in combating child abuse, thanks partly to the fact that most western embassies have police officers stationed for anti-pedophile work using the latest hi-tech equipment. A senior Pattaya police officer, who asked not to be named as he was an undercover investigator, said “I can’t say that Pattaya has resolved the problem altogether, but the

social media influencers to enjoy a variety of exceptional products and services geared to meet the needs of all women travellers in three routings across Thailand. I n a d d i t i o n , TAT i s working with a range of partners in the health and beauty sector as well as hotels, airlines, hospitals, gyms and sports clubs to offer discounts and offers to women visiting Thailand from August 1 to 31, 2016. To support the Women’s Journey project, the special deals from the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale will be extended to August 31.

Finally, for the month of August 2016, TAT has worked with the related authorities to designate a special immigration lane for ladies (women travellers’ fast track) at Thailand’s major international airports in Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang), Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hat Yai. Hairstylists compete at Diana Garden Resort

Saowanee Panatsorn, deputy secretary of Board of Private Education, and Vichai Phuangpakeesiri, director of Secondary Education Chonburi Region 3, opened the hair and beauty competition in Diana Garden Resort Pattaya. More than 200 hairstylists representing different Pattaya beauty schools participated. Kay Boonkeyuth of Juthamas Beauty School won first prize. Hair and makeup training were provided during the event. pedophile network knows very well that youngsters are not available here as they once were.” He added that former pedophile haunts had been “raided to extinction”, commenting that there were now far fewer prosecutions of tourists for this type of offence. “They know we mean business,” he concluded, “and that they will be found guilty and punished in the courts.” None the less, some critics argue that the exclusive concentration on foreigners ignores the fact that many, even most, child sex offences are committed globally by relatives or friends of the family. For example, some expat blogs in Cambodia say that the overzealous targeting of foreign men, who may be innocent, ignores the reality of common sex abuse by locals.

“Sex abuse cases not involving foreigners just don’t seem to get to court,” argued one blogger. On the other hand, it is true that foreigners doing voluntary work with children or working in orphanages can sometimes be guilty. In Cambodia, a former orphanage director was jailed for abusing eleven children under his care, the court dismissing his claim that he had been set up. What is clear from the UN Global Study is that child sex abuse has spread globally and has been underpinned by new technology which has benefited the guilty parties rather than the investigators. As the report states, “With the click of a button, offenders can have children ‘delivered’ to their hotel room or anywhere else they choose.” The problem is no longer restricted to Thailand and its neighbours.

Pattaya Motor Show Healthcare in Thailand Nine things to know: The new Toyota MR-S was officially launched at the Pattaya Motor Show held at Central Festival Pattaya Beach.

A total of 30 new models from various companies were promoted at the annual event and dealers provided various special offers to tempt buyers.

Combating global warming

1. The sectors Healthcare in Thailand is generally good but it is important to distinguish between the private and public sectors. The public sector is essentially for Thais although many hospitals will accept farang patients provided they can pay for treatment. Private hospitals in Thailand tend to be better equipped and have more staff able to communicate in languages other than Thai. Many Thai doctors are not based in one hospital but travel between several on different days of the week. 2. The costs Costs in public hospitals, outpatient and inpatient, are much lower than in Europe. But costs in private hospitals are much higher and comparable with those in specialist hospitals in Europe. In Bangkok and some provincial cities, intensive care units are equipped as well as those in Europe with the latest technology. But expect to pay similar prices.

CentralFestival Pattaya Beach General Manager Sorachai Intaravichai formally opened the SFX Cinema Energy Day 2016 which aimed to demonstrate the importance of saving electricity and slowing down global

warming. Various activities were held including the working of energy-saving innovations, renewable energies and cutting the use of traditional power in homes and offices.

Chevrolet delivers the first AllNew Colorado with a big surprise Chevrolet Sales Thailand has delivered the first unit of the allnew Colorado, to its first customer. Chevrolet recently organized a successful public launch for the allnew pickup truck in Bangkok, and will have road show events in four provinces nationwide throughout August. Wittaya Mekprasit, the customer and owner of the first all-new Colorado in Thailand, says: “We have been a customer of Chevrolet for quite a few years. We own a Cruze and Captiva, Colorado and we are adding the allnew Colorado to our family. Today, the Chevrolet team also provided a great experiences that went beyond our expectations, by organizing a ‘Chevy caravan’ consisting of a convoy of all-new Colorados to pick me and my family from our house, and drive us to the dealership to receive the new truck.

Lawyer’s Day in Court

Payung Chusong, Pattaya Provincial Court chief of judiciary, led the Buddha lighting ceremony in commemoration of Krom Laung Ratchaburi Rekrith, the father of law in Thailand. Ten monks performed the ceremony.

3. Insurance Travellers are forever being reminded to take out proper insurance, and this is obviously very good advice as long as you declare in advance any pre-existing conditions. But it is estimated that only about half the tourists to Thailand have any kind of medical cover and virtually none in the case of Chinese and Indian tourists. Many hospitals in Thailand now require a down payment, if no insurance can be shown, before treatment can be commenced. 4. Traffic jams Thailand is known for its high volume of traffic , especially in large cities, which can affect the efficiency of emergency health services. Ambulances often have difficulty responding and transporting patients quickly. Additionally, many doctors have schedules that require them to travel constantly from hospital to hospital which can mean they cannot always keep appointments on time. 5. Health hazards Thailand’s tropical climate is loved by many but it has its downside too. The warm weather generates the ideal conditions for bacteria and viruses to grow. Mosquitoes represent a particular risk since they are responsible for a number of diseases and not just malaria. If travelling to Thailand, there are a number of recommended vaccinations available in your home country.

Chevrolet and its dealer executives hosted us with a warm welcome which we are very impressed. We are certain there are more Chevrolet nameplates to come because Chevrolet vehicles offer great performance, usability and design. We are also impressed by Chevrolet M.K. Bangbuathong’s services.”

The all-new Colorado received great feedback from media and customers who already tested the truck. Prices for the all-new pickup truck start at 594,000 baht for the entry-level LS variant while the top-of-the-line, premium High Country variant is available at 1,068,000 baht.

6. Outpatient treatment Major hospitals in Thailand all operate outpatient departments, for example dentistry, plastic surgery and eye problems, but these are supplemented by large numbers of private clinics. Some private clinics are first rate and use the services of doctors based in hospitals. But some caution has to be exercised, especially as it is very difficult to sue in the case of allegedly unsatisfactory treatment. 7. Second opinion A doctor treating you in hospital and recommending a course of treatment will not object if you decide to take a second opinion, perhaps in another institution. Indeed, the appointment slips of several major hospitals even make this point explicitly. A second opinion is never a bad idea if you are concerned in any way there could be alternative treatments or solutions. 8. Living wills These are a very good idea for many people, but it is important that they surface at the right time. If you do decide to make a living will - which basically covers your wishes if you are terminally unconscious then lodge a copy with your best friend or nearest relative for them to show the hospital authorities when the time is right. Euthanasia is not allowed by law in Thailand. 9. Final journey Hospitals in Thailand are usually very good at helping grieving relatives cope with a death that occurs there. They will normally assist with embassyrelated bureaucracies, the issuing of death certificates, choice of a mortician and so on. Whether an autopsy is necessary or not is a police discretion in Thailand. Unless the body is transported abroad, the normal method of disposal is cremation as burials are prohibitively expensive in this country.

News Foreigner tracking confusion Special privilege during the Maya Continued from page 1 Nor are Thailand’s many long-term retirees clear about the implications for them, if indeed they are to be included in the net. Many are not computer-savvy and do not own a mobile phone. It is not clear whether those with mobile devices would need to report to their operator to change the SIM card. A spokesperson for AIS said that she knew nothing of the new regulations and thought that it would be months before clarity was on the horizon. Further concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the move as it may not work on some phones, especially those purchased and registered abroad. Indeed, the NBTC has already suggested that such phones will not be covered by the new regulation. Nor will the policy work for foreigners who no longer use their

mobiles and have abandoned their registration. When their numbers are reissued to a new subscriber, a whole set of unresolved issues are thrown up about identification. Although there is a consensus that Thailand does harbor some foreign criminal elements, especially in the area of financial fraud, it is far from clear that the SIM card news will help to counter them. There are all sorts of ways to circumvent the proposal including use of phones registered abroad, putting a mobile in the name of a relative or friend, or even paying a third party to purchase one. If the third party was a Thai national, there would be no requirement anyway to have the tracking technology. The NBTC has accepted that there will now be a period of consultation with interested parties such as mobile phone operators, the customs department and various

government agencies. It is to be hoped that discussions will also occur with tourist agencies who will be able to see that long lines of impatient tourists at immigration entry points, unable to understand what the new SIM cards are all about, are the last thing that is required if Thailand’s stated aim of encouraging international tourism is to avoid a torpedo shock. Everyone can agree that criminally-minded foreigners, whether potential terrorists or large-scale money launderers, should be kept out of the country by all lawful means. But the rash introduction of a compulsory scheme which may achieve little in practice but will compromise lucrative tourism - which amounts to around ten percent of the gross national product - is likely to lead to far more problems than it solves. In other words, it is folly to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Answer to flood problem

Anti-drug training Chatepol Boonsawat, consultant to the mayor, presided over a meeting on how to solve the Pattaya flooding problem which has bedeviled the city authorities since time immemorial. City officials responded that they have been hard at work improving the drainage system and providing extra pumping stations

at Sukhumvit 46, Jomtien Beach, Pratumnak Soi 5 and Chaiyapreuk Soi 1. Normally, the heaviest storms of the rainy season occur in October. So far, this year, rainfall has been 50 percent heavier than last which has improved the former drought situation along the eastern seaboard.

It’s a fact of life that around 100 Chinese tourists die in Thailand every year. According to the Chinese embassy in Bangkok, the main causes are accidents on land drownings at sea. A spokesman said that the Beijing authorities were now issuing travel advice whilst encouraging the Thai side, especially in resorts such as Pattaya, to ensure that warning signs are in Chinese and not just in Thai or English. Thailand welcomed about 8 million tourists from mainland China last year and the figure is likely to be larger this year. Since 2012 the Chinese have been the biggest international group and they are also, contrary to gossip, the biggest spenders. The Thai Tourist Authority is predicting at least 10 million Chinese tourists will arrive in the calendar year 2016. Last month the Chinese internet giant Baidu joined forces with the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) to launch 17,000 tourist attractions in the Chinese language on Baidu which will encourage Chinese visitors to explore the Kingdom by themselves. TAT will also work with Baidu to introduce a smart guide in which Chinese visitors can use a QR code to listen to brief information on tourist destinations in Mandarin. It has been launched as a pilot test at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya. Initial reports say both these venues have benefitted enormously from this new technology in boosting visitor numbers. Tourism, when all is said and done, is one of the main driving forces of the Thai economy at the present time. Now that Thailand is committed to annual tourist numbers of around 30 million, death does remain a problem subject. The challenge is in figuring out how best to prevent fatalities amidst increasing numbers. “We don’t want to see an increased rate of deaths, it leads to a loss of confidence amongst tourists as well as creating social problems in their own countries,” said Charoen Wangananont, president of the Thai travel agents’ association. In recent months, a series of bad accidents have given the country bad publicity. In January, a van accident in Phichit caused four Mexican tourists to lose their lives. Several Brits have died in swimming or pool accidents. In February, an elephant trampled and gored to death a Scottish tourist in Koh Samui, whilst a 52-year old French woman died after being struck by a boat whilst swimming off Krabi in an area reserved for snorkelers. There is actually a website, Farang-Deaths.com, which summarizes the situation on an ongoing basis. Statistics collected there reveal that around 200 farang have died in Thailand since the beginning of the year. That number is probably too small as the site collects information only from English, Thai and German media and seems to neglect the much larger number of deaths amongst resident expats from natural causes such as heart attacks and strokes. Records also show that in the past two years 109 Australian tourists lost their lives in Thailand, a fact which may have been responsible for the decline in Australians visiting Thailand, according to TAT. Other reasons were doubtless not death-related, for example, competition from other Asian destinations. Informal evidence collected by a former official of the British embassy in Thailand suggests that around 300 British nationals die in Thailand every year. The main reasons are lifestyle diseases, especially heart attacks and cancer, amongst the elderly resident expat population and these casualties rarely are reported in the local media, thus minimizing their impact. Amongst young tourists, the main cause of death is riding a rented motorbike. Many renters fail to realize that the engine sizes in Thailand tend to be greater than in Europe, whilst not everybody realizes that driving in the Land of Smiles is rather different in the safety stakes than back in the UK. Several international reports have highlighted that road accidents in Thailand are amongst the highest in the world. Although the media always report suicides, this mode of earthly termination is not a larger issue than most other world cities of a million or so people (in the busy season). Nor is it always clear that suicide hasn’t been confused with accidental death, especially where falls from condos are concerned. As regards murder of foreigners, this remains a subject sure to attract the media. But the number remains in single figures in most years, perhaps surprisingly in view of the number of unlicensed guns said to be in circulation. Everybody knows what should and could be done to reduce the number of accidental deaths in Thailand, both local and farang. Public service vehicles, especially buses and minivans, need to checked regularly to ensure that their tyres and brakes are in good working order. Road diversions and construction impediments on highways should be well-lit and easier to see in heavy rain when some of the most dreadful vehicle accidents occur. These common sense solutions are obvious yet are far from being properly operational in Thailand. As regards drunken driving, the Thai police have certainly stepped up their activities on main roads to suppress this evil, although rumours persist that income generation is at least as important as making the roads safer. But the road blocks in cities such as Pattaya have certainly had some beneficial effect. A recent survey of restaurants and bars showed that some drivers had changed their drinking habits specifically because of the increasing danger of being stopped and ordered to undergo a breath test. A handful of wellpublicized cases have illustrated that some farang have indeed been jailed, and in two cases deported, for driving under the influence of liquor. Yet the overall problem of tourist deaths is still unresolved. Tourist safety needs to be made a national agenda subject, ranking with issues such as human trafficking, corruption and illegal fishing. Only when every party gets seriously involved, will the subject be dealt with seriously enough. In the end, prevention is always better than cure.

Renovation expands Chan Takes Royal Crown at King’s

seating capacity Cup Presented by PTT Group at all-day diner Oasis

Oasis, the all-day restaurant at Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya, has completed a renovation programme that has seen the number of seats increase by almost 100. The restaurant now has 192 indoor and 288 outdoor seats, making a total of 480 seats, compared to the previous total of 387. Oasis, located at the lower lobby level of the resort’s south tower, opposite the entrance to the jungle water park, is now fully open for service. Each morning an extensive breakfast buffet is served from 6 am

to 10:30, offering Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, American and Continental cuisines. Healthy organic whole-wheat items are also served, accompanied by a variety of juices and freshly brewed coffee and tea. An a la carte menu is served throughout the day, with the emphasis on fresh ingredients and with a range of international signature dishes. A full range of soft drinks, beers, cocktails and world wines is available. Last orders are taken at 11 pm. For further information and reservations, contact 038 301 234 ext 4261.

Chinese Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang realised his dream of winning his first Asian Tour title after a final round three-under-par 67 saw him lift the King’s Cup presented by PTT Group. Having already won five times on the Asian Development Tour (ADT), Chan knew a victory on the Asian Tour was long overdue and was clearly ecstatic when he compiled a four-day total of 12-under-par 268 to win the US$750,000 event by two shots. Compatriot Lin Wen-tang was also all smiles despite finishing second with a 66 at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club. Thailand’s Danthai Boonma came close to retaining the King’s Cup on home soil but faltered after a closing 64 left him three shots back of Chan where he would finish in tied-third with England’s Mark Foster. Victory was especially sweet for Chan as he became the second player from Chinese Taipei after Chan Yih-shin in 2009 to win the King’s Cup. The 30-year-old also dashed the hopes of the local faithful as the King’s Cup will not be kept on home soil for the first time since 2009. “It was a close battle all the way

until the 16th when I knew I had a chance. Words cannot describe how I felt when I sank that last putt. “It has always been my dream to win on the Asian Tour and I did it today,” said Chan. Chan was aware that a win would not be a straight-forward affair especially at the start of the day when he was battling neck-to-neck with England’s Eddie Pepperell.

It was only when Pepperell dropped five shots in his last four holes that Chan knew a victory was in sight. “I was actually feeling very nervous when I started my round. I knew it would be a very close fight as there was little separating the leaders at the start of the day. I told myself to play my own game and not look at the leaderboard too much so that I’ll not feel so nervous. “The greens are very challenging this week and it was important for me to get most of my shots onto the fairway. I did most of that today,” said Chan. Lin, a six-time Asian Tour winner, came close to adding another title. But despite falling short, he remained sanguine about his game. “If I was destined to win this week, I would be holding the trophy now. But that’s golf. It has been a great week and I cannot ask for more,” said Lin. “I thought I had a good chance coming in as I was really hitting the ball very well. But it’s okay, there will be another time for me again,” added Lin.

Danthai surmount a late charge that kept the home crowd at the edge of their seats. He stormed towards the turn with a 31 and continued his birdie blitz with three birdies in his next four holes after the turn. However he ran out of steam after that and a bogey on 16 dented all hopes of another local winner.

The management and staff of Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya, led by Andre Brulhart, general manager, invited mothers from Banglamung Elderly Center and children from Baan Khru Ja Foundation, to celebrate the 84th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and Thai Mother’s Day. “I’m very pleased with how I played today although I felt let down by those two bogeys on five and 16. When I eagled six, I felt like my game was back on track and I was ready for the charge. “I did that right until 13. I could not find any more birdies after that and that bogey on 16 all but left me out of the running for the title,” said Danthai.

Dr. William’s orthomolecular coconut oil presentation introduces his new product by by Mick & Di Barker

There is an impressive amount of literature around on the health benefits of coconut oil and Dr. William is a proud proponent of his organic virgin (Thai) coconut oil. Made from fresh coconuts which are opened less than 48 hours after being picked they are then cold pressed to extract the milk and subsequently go through a centrifuge where the purest oil spins away from the water layer. Dr. William’s presentation, hosted by Aroi Resto and Bar in Soi 89, was an interesting and informative session. Reputed health benefits of the oil, taken regularly, are wideranging from curing Alzheimer’s Disease, easing IBS, fighting colds and flu to balancing cholesterol, improving bone health to energizing the brain. Dr. William comments, “In The Netherlands I was for many years an active member of the Dutch Society of Orthomolecular medicine and I

want to make sure you have peace of mind knowing that I am offering you what I believe is the absolute best coconut oil's that exists”. Peter, the owner of Aroi, had prepared a selection of dishes having marinated salmon tartare in the oil, flash searing tuna and frying peppered chicken and extra tasty

New Chevrolet Colorado High Country 2.5 L 2WD

by John K. Lindgren Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com

Downsized Motor, High Levels of Comfort, Features and Safety

We don't call them commercial vehicles – we call them pickup trucks and “Chevy” is one of the legendary pickups. The Colorado model was born in the USA. “Drove my Chevy to the levy...” Now built in Thailand at the General Motors Rayong plant which opened in 2010. Here the latest edition with a name that rocks: Chevy Colorado High Country. Pattaya Today Automotive took it for a weekend test drive. The Colorado High Country was easy to find. Parked at level 10A GM Thailand headquarters. Thanks to the paint job. “Pull Me Over Red” so beastly red that it almost hurts. I love it! Styling cues: The all-new dual-port grille, new bumper, new engine hood and the cool LED daytime running lamps. Maybe the best looking one-tonne Thai built pickup. You can hear it saying “I am ready to roll!” Interior: Step up on the running board and climb in. The cabin is more like an upscale saloon car boasting black leather with white contrast stitching, power-adjustable driver’s seat and piano black accents. Colorado is the first truck in the Thai market to offer Apple Car Play. In the center console a new driver information center with 8-inch color touch screen and Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system the chunky climate control buttons and the air vents are well positioned. All controls user friendly, also when driving in the night. High Country is a four-door crew-cab design with ample legroom in the backseat including armrest. This truck also boasts a marked reduction in wind noise, vibration and harshness. “NVH”. Engine: The previous 2.8 liter Drama diesel has been downsized to 2,5L. The powerful and fuel efficient four-cylinder turbo-diesel is available in manual and automatic transmission producing 180 horsepower and 440 Nm or torque. The 6-speed automatic box with manual mode provides smooth shifting. Diesel fuel consumption during our test drive according the on-board computer average 9.0 and best 17.4 km/l. You can start the Colorado High Country engine with the remote-start function on the key fob. Chevy High Country shares this feature with the new Honda Civic. The range is 100 meter.

Just click and the engine starts and the LED's light up. Cool feature – especially when you park your Colorado outside TESCO-LOTUS in the high noon heat. Safety: Everything from Panic Brake Assist (PBA), to Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Plus front airbags for driver and passenger and knee airbag for the chauffeur. Important Driver Assistance features: Depending on variants, the all-new Colorado boasts lane departure warning, forward collision alert, front and rear parking assist and tire pressure monitor. Additionally, it features auto rain sensor, auto headlamp on/off and the remote-start function. It also comes with a wide-angle view reverse camera (back up camera). The Drive: Destination Kaeng Krachang National Park. Don't be scared by the tongue-twisting “Kaeng Kra-chang” name. Most south bound week-enders pass the road sign at Khao Yoi it without blinking on their way to Hua-Hin, Prachaup Khirikhan. Kaeng

Krachang town is only 180 km from Bangkok. Hit the Thai national highway route 4 (Southern bound highway) and drive until junction to route 3499 south of Phetchaburi. Continue 32 km and you'll you reach Kaeng Krachan Town, near the national park HQ and the reservoir of Kaeng Krachang dam, which looks like natural lake surrounded by rolling hills. The park consists mainly of evergreen rainforest with the highest elevation at 1,200m. In the area you'll find hot springs, waterfalls and caves. Accommodation? Camping grounds, guest houses including a boutique resort the Nana Resort & Spa. What to Do? Trekking, birdwatching, butterfly watching, caving, rafting, canoeing – or just relaxing listening to the birds and the wind. The Chevy Colorado High Country passed test with flying colors: the expressway, highway, country road elevated hill climbs and descents on the asphalt track and the dusty dirt roads. Riding high on the 18 inch tires with commanding view and 180 horsepower provided plenty of traction. On the downhill hairpin turns adequate brakes. Feeling safe in a tough yet refined Chevy truck. Oh, yes! The all-new Colorado pickup truck comes in 13 variants. The entry level Colorado LS manual transmission starts at 594,000 baht and the top-of- theline premium High Country 4WD at 1,068,000 baht. Our tests drive the High Country 2WD Crew Cab: 998,000 baht.

INFINITI @ INTERCONTINENTAL PATTAYA The new menu hums with the tastes and aromas of the best in mediterranean cuisine The newly branded Intercontinental Pattaya (formerly Sheraton) is quietly renovating the property including the creation of Club rooms on dedicated floors. Their flagship restaurant, Infiniti is also receiving a make-over in respect of their restaurant concept. Executive Sous Chef Prichet was on hand to guide us through the newly crafted menu. To dine at Infiniti is an experience to remember. Tables are set on the terrace under either a sunny blue or starry night sky with panoramic views out over the ocean and islands beyond. Gentle breezes catch the air and the open kitchen affords a glimpse of the chefs doing what they do best in an atmosphere of quiet professionalism. On arrival at the hotel, we recommend you take advantage of the buggy to take you down the not inconsiderable distance, through the spectacular tropical gardens to the Infiniti terrace location. We were to experience a 4-course culinary romp through chef’s new signature dishes and whilst waiting for the first serving we enjoyed a glass of the excellent house Cabernet Sauvignon. First up was Carpaccio of sea bass (B.420++). Now we have tasted many adaptations of this

Carpaccio of Sea Bass

Key Lime Pie

famous raw beef dish but never with this fish before. It worked a treat, the soft luscious fish had been sliced into gossamer thin slices and swathed in a rich avocado puree with a salsa verde and a scattering of wild rocket. It was a delicate, delicious dish and one we would certainly order again. Other appetizers that caught our eye were the meze plate of hummous, baba ganoush, Kalamata olives and a tabbouleh salad or fried mini blue crab cakes, caponata, and caper aioli. A modern crab salad is a highlighted dish, devised by Theo Randall (a British

Executive Sous Chef Prichet

born chef who specializes in Italian cuisine and is currently the proprietor of InterContinental Hotel’s London flagship restaurant) it features the very latest fashion in fish seasoning, “Bottarga” which is a dried, salted block of cured fish roe. It is a very expensive product and much in vogue at present. Served with Florentine fennel it is a must try dish. (B.520 ++). Our tasting menu continued with another starter namely a deconstructed Caprese salad with delicious vine cherry tomatoes, marble sized with a sweet, aromatic just-picked flavour. These were accompanied by creamy Bocconcini (small balls of Mozzarella) pesto and aged balsamic and finished with a sprinkling of pine nuts. The innovative tableside seared “Hot Rock” specialities are a unique experience. To be accurate they are not rocks but steel pucks which rest atop a container of white stones, star anise, cinnamon bark and peppercorns, and as you can imagine it all generates an exquisite smoky aroma to permeate the chosen items of Australian lamb loin, beef tenderloin or sea scallops with harissa sauce. Do try. Our main course comprised of a large roasted calamari served on a bed of lentils flavoured with the squid’s black ink. The meltingly juicy and tender calamari was presented in the whole piece for terrific presentation. A big, bodacious plate of health with

the added benefit of that salty ink to get the taste buds flying. Paella rice (for 2) with mussels, prawns, clams and lobsters (B.1,250++) caught our eye as did the rack of lamb with rosemary and salsa verde (another Theo Randall dish) or the speciality 48-hour 1824 short ribs with asparagus and roasted carrot puree. For heartier fare the Grill offers Australian beef tenderloin, fire roasted 150 day grain-fed beef rib eye or the most highly prized Japanese Kurobuta pork cooked to order and served with a variety of sauces and vegetables. For our final dessert course chef presented his speciality Key Lime Pie with summer berries and pistachio ice cream and the kitchen’s signature Tiramisu. Luscious, scrumptious confections for a sugary heaven and the sweetest gastro-finale. If you’re just in the market for a

brunch or lunch-time snack look no further than the brick oven pizzas laden with exquisite ingredients or a plate of fine pasta the likes of spaghetti and blue crabs with Bottarga, garlic, chilli and clam broth. Infiniti’s new menu hums with the tastes and aromas of the best of Mediterranean cuisine. The abundance of well-sourced quality ingredients combined with skillful execution, an energetic serving team and that stunning view from the terrace flows together to make this restaurant a hit from the word go. Infiniti is located in the new InterContinental Pattaya 437 Phratamnak Road. Open daily from 11.00 am to 10.30 pm. Tel: (038) 259 842 www.intercontinental.com/pattaya.

A 24/7 Culinary Venue full of gourmet surprises We have to say we would never have thought about popping into Ambassador City for a sashimi platter, sweet and sour chicken or to tuck into a plate of “prik nam pla tu,” but now we most definitely will. For such a venue the pricing is reasonable in the extreme especially at night when you are also entertained by a very accomplished trio of musicians. So next time you’re in a quandary as to where to go for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner – why not head down to Ambassador City and give the Atrium a run for your money? Sound interesting? Read on… The first impression of Ambassador City is that it is huge. With 4,200 rooms situated on a 40-acre property overlooking the beach, it consists of five hotel buildings, eight restaurants, bars, nightclubs, convention center, and fitness facilities and also claims to have Asia’s largest swimming pool. This is indeed a city. As our mission was to review the Atrium restaurant we entered through the Ocean Wing

building. It is an astonishing new edifice; gaze upwards and 18 floors of trailing plant-covered balconies soar into the glass roof. Eight panoramic lifts whizz up and down taking their occupants to their luxury accommodation. It is one imposing, massive space and a sight we never expected to find when we stepped into the foyer. We were now seated in the Atrium restaurant and could take stock of our striking surroundings. This is one glitzy space dominated by a spectacular circular performance platform elevated above the restaurant where a trio of musicians entertains nightly. The menu is also huge. A quintet of kitchens offers Asian cuisine (Japanese, Thai, Chinese and noodle) plus their popular Steak and Grill. We were to be served a tasting menu from all chefs and while waiting sipped on a very acceptable Bushman’s Gully, Cabernet Shiraz which comes in at a promotional price of B.950. Incidentally all prices are net and Atrium is a round the

clock culinary destination serving from their extensive menu 24 hours daily. Primarily we wanted to try the pan-Asian kitchens but did spot many interesting western items on the Steak and Grill menu such as imported steaks, kebabs, beef stroganoff plus lots of fish options including the ubiquitous fish and chips for only B.300. First to arrive at our table was a splendid bowl of glistening, polar fresh sashimi. Either you love this Japanese delicacy or you don’t – no two ways about it. We adore it and the Atrium’s mixed combination was a wonderful example, fresh, succulent and superb (and at only B.220). The Japanese menu also features an extensive choice of teppanyaki dishes and various mixed or individual servings of sushi. Teppanyaki sets offer U.S. or New Zealand beef, Kurobuta pork or chicken, salmon, saba, snow fish or a mixed seafood platter, all served with garlic fried rice, miso soup, mixed salad and kimchi.

From the Chinese kitchen we were served baked rice with seafood in a clay pot (B.180) which again is another personal favourite, the heady flavours of the fish infusing the sweetness of the rice works so well. There are over ten baked rice variations to please all tastes plus a myriad of stir fried or deep fried creations such as sweet and sour chicken, prawns or fish, stir fried young kale with salted fish or stir fried sea bass with black pepper. Prices are in the B.150/180 range. Noodle lovers listen up – there are 30 different variations to please your palates including some Vietnamese favourites. We haven’t even mentioned the Thai kitchen yet! We were served deep fried chubby prawns in a delicious tom yam sauce followed by an eye rewarding “prik nam pla tu” (shrimp paste dipping sauce and Thai mackerel). This Thai dish is a speciality of Chef Panus and was just a treat to gaze upon. Masses of cooked and raw vegetables nestled around a bowl of fiery spiced splendour with a crisply

grilled mackerel just crying out to be dipped into the chili paste (B.160). A wonderful dish and one that we would happily return to eat again on a private visit. Massaman chicken curry was another tasting dish to hit the table, redolent with aromatic spicing it was an adept rendition. For a taste of Europe, bangers and mash appeared with a German twist using top notch Frankfurter sausages. Lots of red and green curries, soups and stir fried dishes with Thai sets (from B.175) the likes of jasmine rice with red curry paste and crispy pork crackling served with salted egg, or what about fried shrimps with roasted chili paste served with rice and deep fried crispy dried squids? A delightful plate of mixed fruit and a velvety crème caramel sweetly brought down the curtain on our Atrium experience. Ambassador City is situated on Sukumvit Road, Na Jomtien. The Atrium is open 24 hours a day and all prices are net (inclusive of service charge and VAT). Tel: (038) 255501 www.ambassadorcityjomtien.com

Sweet Secrets: Understanding Sugar and Its Role in your Diet What would life be like without sugar? Certainly not as exciting, because sugar makes our food sweet and taste good, giving us a certain amount of satisfaction. In addition, its sweetness is known to give us that nice instant “lift”that we sometimes crave. Until sugar was widely available as a commodity, sweetness was found in many fruits and vegetables. An interesting fact is that Cleopatra, who lived from 69 to 30 BC, enjoyed figs and dates, two of the sweetest fruits, as her snack foods. It was only in the 1600s that sugar became a major part of the human diet, when sugar plantations were set up and sea voyages brought it to different parts of the world. Sugar is a carbohydrate found naturally in many foods, such as lactose in milk and fructose in fruit and honey. In fact, some sugar is considered necessary in our diet to supply us with ready energy. Our muscles, and also our brain, both need fuel to boost up energy and keep them active. So sugar should not be eliminated outright from the diet, although moderation and a good understanding will enableus to enjoy the delicious sweetness without affecting our health. Fructose, glucose and sucrose There are many types of sugar that come from various sources. Among the most widely consumed are fructose and glucose which come naturally in the free state from fruits and vegetables – and, these foods naturally contain fibers and antioxidants, as well. Sucrose is a combination of glucose and fructose, and this is what we buy and know as common table sugar. In the body, the glucose is absorbed into the blood and causes the blood sugar to rise. Fructose, on the other hand, must be converted into glucose before being released into the blood, so it is an example of a simple carbohydrate that is great tasting, yet leads to much more modest increases in blood sugar after it is eaten. We also hear about high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), made from corn, which is not the same as fructose. In fact, high

fructose corn syrup is very similar in composition to table sugar and about half of the sugar it contains is glucose. HFCS is commonly used in many processed foods. Its popularity started in the 80s and manufacturers started to use it to replace cane sugar. We often do not expect to find sugar in common food items such as ketchup, salad dressings, crackers and other bread products, but these hidden sugars are added to many processed foods to improve their flavor, and unfortunately leaves us with empty calories, and nothing more. This why it is important to learn to read the labels of food that we consume, so we know exactly what we are getting in our diets.   Sugar, yes, but in moderation Sometimes, some sweetener is needed to improve the taste of food or to make it less bitter, or to make it enjoyable to eat. However, it is important that we enjoy added sugars in moderation, and learn to enjoy and appreciate the natural sweet flavors of foods such as fruit. We are all aware that sugar consumption has been scientifically linked to obesity and other health concerns, which is why it is important to understand the different types of sugar and the role it plays in our diet. According to the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, a 475 ml cup of coffee that Thais normally consume contains 10.5 teaspoons or 52.5 grams of sugar, while a glass of 350 ml bubble tea contains 11.25 teaspoons of sugar or 56.25 grams. With just one drink, the recommended daily intake of sugar by the Thai nutritional guidelines (10% of total energy intake or not more than 40 – 55 grams per day), is nearly or already exceeded. Balance is necessary. You cannot have a totally sugar-free diet, but we don’t want to use excessive amounts of sugar that add unnecessary calories to the diet, since this may lead to weight gain.

Dr David Heber, renowned nutrition expert and chairman of the Herbalife Nutrition Institute and the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, does not believe in cutting sugar totally out of the diet.“We need some sugar in our diet every day because of the quick energy it gives for our brain, for our blood cells, and other organs in the body to function properly. If you eliminate all carbohydrates from the diet, then you need more protein, or you would end up breaking down your muscles to make sugars.” He also explains that sugar is not a poison, especially when it is in a low-calorie food. We cannot avoid sugar altogether, but what matters is knowing about all the different types of sugar and also the amount of sugar your food contains. Pure fructose for example, found in fruits, vegetables and honey, is sweeter than sugar, so it can cut down the total amount of sugar you consume. “Since it is almost twice as sweet as table sugar, using fructose is a safe way to reduce the amounts of sugar added to foods, and can be a great way to help with weight management, he adds. Herbalife shakes available in the Thai market provide just 7-9 grams of fructose per serving which is the same amount of fructose usually found in a medium sized apple and considered a reasonable amount to give it a nice flavor. It is important for individuals concerned about high fructose consumption to look at their entire diet, to determine their total daily intake of fructose and other sugars. Nine tips to reduce your sugar intake 1. Always taste your food before adding sugar. 2. Limit your consumption of food and drinks containing high amounts of added sugar. 3. Learn how to read the nutritional facts labels. 4. Know all the different names of sugar- such as molasses, malt syrup, cane juice, etc. and ingredients ending in “ose.” 5. Make sure your daily added sugar intake does not exceed recommendations. 6. Reduce your sugar intake slowly, to get your body used to the change. *This article is brought to you by Herbalife in line with its mission of providing nutrition for a better life and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

NES Classic Edition Sony 100-Inch Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 Smartphone Printer

Buying an old NES and a bunch of games to try and relive your youth is admirable. It's also a complete pain, storing and swapping out enormous cartridges and trying to figure out whether or not your TV even has a coax input. The NES Classic Edition gives you all the nostalgia with none of the hassle. Arriving in November, it's a miniature of the real thing, packing 30 games into a palm-sized box — including all three Marios, both Zeldas, a couple Castlevanias, Metroid, Punch-Out (sadly minus Mike), and the best football game ever made, Tecmo Bowl. It connects to your TV via HDMI, and its controller can hook to a Wii Remote for use with Virtual Console games.

It would be amazing if our phones spit out photos just like a Polaroid. Until that happens, the Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 Smartphone Printer is the next closest thing. Faster than its predecessor, it can print a photo in as little as 10 seconds, connecting to your phone via Wi-Fi. Via the overhauled app, you can adjust things like brightness, contrast, and saturation before printing, apply filters, and create collages before you print out your 2 inches by 3 inches masterpiece.

ASEAN Real Estate Networking Alliance! This past year we witnessed a number of groundbreaking events throughout the ASEAN region. The Thailand Property Awards has spread throughout Southeast Asia and into China with events now hosted in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Hong Kong, as well as in Thailand. In Singapore we have the prestigious South East Asia Awards event, and in Hong Kong the China Property Awards. Last year featured the first “all-day” Property Report Congress before the Singapore South East Asia Awards; it was so successful that this year every one of the above countries features an all-day Property Report Congress prior to the evenings’ gala dinners and awards presentations. Including being taken over by the wellknown Property Guru Group and having Hans Grohe as their platinum sponsor, Property Report Asia Magazine has gone from strength to strength and now dominates the market for the highest exposure for the Asia Pacific region’s best developers, designers and suppliers. We also had another successful first in July 2015--the 1.1 million- member National Association of Realtors held its very first International Realtors Conference & Expo outside the United States. It was a tremendous success organized by Shonee Henry, NAR Regional Coordinator to Asia Pacific, Australia, UAE & Lebanon, and a member of the NAR Global Business & Alliances Committee. Shonee’s efforts paid off big time as the event was well received. In fact, it led to the second IRC event later this month (August 31 to September 3) featuring speakers and attendees from all over the world, including some of the NAR’s top officials. The full schedule covers subjects that truly reflect the diversity of the many countries attending and the many ‘cultures of real estate’ that exist throughout the world.

Legal Advice

LEGAL ADVICE

by Magna Carta Law Office

LEGAL EXECUTION IN CIVIL CASES What is a civil case? What is a legal execution in civil cases? Civil cases generally involve private disputes between persons or organizations. Civil case arises when one party (plaintiff) files a legal action to the court with a claim that another party (defendant) has failed to carry out a legal obligation owed to them, thus requiring the defendant to fulfill that obligation and/or make monetary compensation for the damages incurred, or to act or to abstain from a certain act. When the court’s decision has been awarded but the losing party disregards it, a legal execution action, carried out by an executing officer, will come into place. Legal execution action starts by requesting the court to issue a writ of execution and to appoint an executing officer who may seize or attach the losing party’s property or evict the losing party from his/her premise or demolish such property as per the writ of execution. How can I get the executing officer to attach a judgment debtor’s property? Attachment is a legal process of seizing or apprehending a property owned by the debtor to be transferred to the creditor or to be sold for the benefit of the creditor, to ensure compliance with a judgment. In order to get the executing officer to attach a judgment debtor’s property, a request must be filed with the executing officer specifying the property to be attached. All the relevant documents must be submitted which includes a copy of the house registration or certificate of incorporation of juristic person of the Judgment Debtor or of those related to the claim. All documents must be certified by relevant officers not over one month prior to the date of submission.

How long will the judgment creditor receive payment after the judgment debtor’s property is seized or attached? Judgment creditor will receive payment once the auction is completed. In the case that the judgment debtor’s property is attached, the judgment creditor will receive payment once the attached amount is received. The executing officer will call upon the judgment creditor to examine the statement of income and expenditure; if the judgment creditor finds the statement in good order, he/she may proceed to collect the payment. Otherwise, the judgment creditor may file a motion of objection to the executing officer who will then put the payment on hold until the case is final. When will the auction take place? After notifying the relevant debtors (if any) and the relevant registrars that the property has been seized, the executing officer shall report to the court and ask for the court’s permission to start the public auction. Once permission is granted, the executing officer may make the announcement and send a notice to the judgment creditor to notify the venue and the date of the public auction. What is needed in order to collect the payment? The Judgment creditor must present his/her original ID card or other identification cards (with photo) issued by any government agencies. If a proxy is to be appointed, the proxy must bring a power of attorney in the official form prescribed by the legal execution department along with the judgment creditor’s original ID card for validation. In case the judgment creditor is a juristic person, a company affidavit must be presented. Where can I contact the executing officer? For the sake of convenience, you should check from which court the writ of execution was issued. If it was issued from a provincial court, you may contact the executing officer in such province. If it was issued from a court in Bangkok, you may contact the Civil Case enforcement Bangkok Office 1-6 which is now open to the public for the convenience of proceeding with the execution of civil cases including property seizure, eviction, demolition, attachment, disposal and deposit of property. Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley

Protecting your Family….

Expatriate Financial Planning, back to basics ………… In our earlier articles we covered asset protection structures through the use of offshore trusts, and inheritance planning vehicles. Often overlooked however, are the most basic foundations of any financial planning review, especially relevant for international families taking up residence overseas, or already living outside their home country. Could your family survive...? This question is an obvious one but we are always surprised at how many expatriate families ignore international life assurance. This is even more important for cross cultural relationships and marriages. For a myriad of good reasons, most expatriates will retain the bulk of their capital, bank accounts and investment portfolios, outside of the country that they are living in. If the survivor (s) is not aware of the existence and/or location of those assets they could remain undiscovered for years. In any event, on the death of the person named on the account, (and if not in joint names and / or with named beneficiaries) those assets will be frozen in each country that they are based in, and will then have to pass through probate in the domicile country of the deceased, which more often than not, is the country they were born in. This could take a year or more, not to mention the logistics involved, and no one gets any money in the meantime - a huge burden on loved ones. The bills keep coming in, school fees still need to be paid, and in many cases the survivor will not be able to generate an income level sufficient to meet initial and ongoing needs. This could lead to a severe downgrading of current lifestyle and a significant depletion of capital. Check that any existing life protection you have in place already still covers you whilst living overseas? Many expatriates assume that the life cover they took out years ago in their home country will still cover them in Asia. This may be so for a few but the vast majority of ‘home country’ insurance companies will not extend cover to overseas residents, and will certainly not take the trouble to tell you so until it is too late. Of course no one knows when their time will come. However, knowing that you have taken steps to help those you leave behind to cope if the worst should happen can be hugely reassuring to all involved. A local will for local assets, offshore life cover with named beneficiaries, and offshore assets assigned into a suitably worded trust are the basics. Youth Focus

Smart Partnership Foundation for Sound Education by Dr Wilna du Toit Education is not really about teaching - it is about learning. If your children are not learning then all the teaching in the world is to little avail. Education remains an illusion and teaching becomes a meaningless exercise. Yes, resources like established curricula, excellent work schemes, sufficient teaching and learning material or stateof-the-art equipment are important, but they cannot replace the value of smart partnerships. Knowledge of roles and open communication For optimum learning we need the threesome: the parent, the teacher and the child. Firstly, these three

partners need to know their roles and responsibilities in this educational partnership for the best possible outcomes. Secondly they need to practise an open, respectful two way communication for learning to have a solid foundation. Without these two components the process could be hampered. Partner One: Parents To put it in a nutshell: Parents need to create and provide the best opportunities and means possible for their children's education. They have a choice of schools to help them execute their parental duty of educating their children. Very often parents leave too much responsibility to the school

which puts a heavy and even unfair load on the teachers' shoulders. Partner Two: Teachers As professional educators teachers have to motivate and inspire children in the classroom to learn and gain the maximum knowledge, to kindle passion and acquire much-needed skills to equip them for the life lying ahead of them. Again, this is put in a nutshell. Partner Three: Children Children, when they enter upper primary school (the earlier the better), need to discover more and more their role and responsibilities regarding education, school and learning. Learning is so to

speak, their full-time job and much depends on them to make a great success of that. The children need to harness every opportunity to discover and apply knowledge and skills imparted to them by parental “appointed” experts. Three Partners As children mature, more and more responsibility for their education is to be taken by the children themselves. They have to realise that they have to start taking ownership of their education as it will serve them well in future. Here both parents and teachers need to take hands in helping children discover the world of knowledge, great positive attitudes and skills they need to acquire to to do and be the best person they are meant to be. Should one of the threesome not pull their weight, the best results will

GIS HOSTS FIRST CAREERS' FAIR by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona

Garden International School held its first ever Careers' FAIR. Prefects Berenice and Abhigyan organised the event for students to help them decide which kind of career they may wish to pursue in the future. Parents and teachers gave brief presentations about their various careers, which included accounting, building power plants, being a policeman and travel writing. Other presenters had worked in ICT, been in charge of fundraising for museums and been engineers. After the talks, students had a chance to chat individually with the teachers and parents about their careers and pick up some tips about what they needed to focus on. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

elude. It is not only the lack of commitment of one or more of this partnership that hampers effective learning, but power struggles can have an even worse impact on the process. Power struggles must be resolved by the three parties and if not, a mediator would be the next step towards success. For those who have established strong partnerships in the past, we salute you. For those who are willing to get more involved,

please take a step to ensure the best possible education for your children. If you are not sure how to go about it, discuss it with the other parties or get advice from seasoned educators. On a more poetic and philosophical endnote: “Together may we give our children the roots to grow and the wings to fly.” Dr Wilna du Toit is the School Principal of Mooltripakdee International School.

Fifty Five Days at Peking an Eternity Charlton Heston saves civilization again No expense was spared in turning some plains in Spain into the setting for the 1963 movie 55 Days at Peking which lasts exactly 159 minutes. At a cost of $US 17 million, the producer Sam Bronston and the director Nicholas Ray created an elaborate setting for their romanticized

Not history but lots of dead bodies

version of the Boxer Rebellion in Peking in 1900. The foreign delegations in the city are trapped in their compound by the nationalistic Boxer peasants who almost succeed in slaughtering the imperialist pigs before the arrival of foreign reinforcements saves the day for Charlton Heston, representing the United States, and David Niven the British ambassador. There’s also a sort of unconsummated love affair between Heston and an expat Russian baroness played by Ava Gardner. The Boxer uprising is represented in the film as a savage outburst of primitive xenophobia directed at the West and its Christian missionaries. The northern Chinese peasants with their red headscarves are shown in the movie

to believe in a magic and in ancient martial arts which can protect them from foreign bullets and save them from European and American imperialists. Their supposedly naïve ways are illustrated in the movie by a bit part character who exclaims, “The Boxers are not stupid. When they want to catch a fish they do not climb to the top of the tree.” Thanks for that insight. But in China the Boxers are often remembered as somewhat misguided patriots. It’s true that they burned many churches and killed foreign missionaries south of Peking, but their main victims were Chinese citizens who had converted to Christianity. These converts, known to the Boxers as “secondary hairy ones”, were no more than local ruffians who exploited foreign protection to ride roughshod over their countrymen. To the Chinese, these converts deserved to die in their tens of thousands. And they did. In fact, some commentators

today feel that the Boxer spirit of fervent nationalism and antiforeigner sentiment lives on in China. In 2009 the People’s Daily congratulated the Boxers on their patriotism and implied that such a sentiment rightly causes panic amongst foreigners. On the other hand, the Chinese government doesn’t want antiwestern feeling to be encouraged too much. Several attempts to erect memorials to the Boxers in Chinese cities have been vetoed by the authorities. China can hardly replace America as the world’s number one super economic power if xenophobia is encouraged. In the movie 55 Days at Peking, the part of the dowager empress Tzu His is played succinctly by Flora Robson. Although the movie wrongly suggests that the Qing dynasty collapsed as a result of the failed Boxer rising – in fact it survived for another twelve years or so – the dilemma facing the empress really did exist at the time. If she sup-

The Empress Dowager never really decided about the Boxers

ported the Boxers, she might risk being overwhelmed by them. But if she attempted to crush them, then she could be accused of pandering to foreigners. Neither the real dowager empress nor Flora Robson resolved this contradiction. They tried both policies at once and fell through the cracks of their own making. Perhaps the best thing about Fifty Five Days at Peking is the award winning musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin which makes the 159 minutes seem less of a drag. So if you enjoy an old fashioned epic of war and revel in exotic locations and a cast of thousands, with a handful of Hollywood luminaries thrown in, then the movie is just your cup of tea. However, the folks who prefer their history free of obvious fantasy may find a more exact version in the library or by surfing the web. It was always thus.

3 tips for making up after an argument

Step #2 – Make Body Contact A study in the Psychosomatic Medicine journal in 2005 showed that physical contact – touching each other – can raise the level of the hormone oxytocin in your body, which is known to reduce stress and increase loving feelings. So even if you’re still feeling a little angry about the disagreement, give a little hug or hold hands. Even just sitting side by side touching on the couch can be enough to help you get rid of any harbored resentment. Step #3 – See Things From His Point Of View

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in a relationship; you’re still two separate people who occasionally have a difference of opinion – and that can turn into an argument. Sometimes, those arguments can be pretty serious, and your ability to make up afterwards plays a big part in the health of your relationship. Here are three simple steps to take that will help you end your next argument easily and help you walk away from it without holding any grudges or hard feelings. Step #1 – Have A Pre-Arranged “Green Light” Signal

It can take a while for feelings to calm down after an argument, and it’s best to give each other that time before you try to talk about it. If both of you haven’t cooled off enough, it can just cause another blow out if you try to talk it over. Give each other enough time to let the sting of the disagreement pass; it may take longer for one than the other, and that’s OK. A simple phrase like “I’m ready when you are” is all it takes to let your partner know. When both have given the sign, the “green light” is on for calm discussion.

Once you’ve both given the green light, it’s important to avoid re-initiating the whole disagreement by repeating your arguments. Having a make-up conversation only works when you’re ready to bring something new to the discussion, which means you need to try to see it from the other person’s perspective. It’s not necessary that you give in and say that it was okay for him to head out with the guys after work and not call you. But being willing to at least see it from his point of view can make him less defensive about having done it in the first place. If you can state that you’re willing to try to understand his point of view, then chances are he’ll be more likely to feel truly apologetic; if he still feels under attack, he’ll only become more defensive and you’re no better off than when you started.

Start planning your travel to these peaceful places. With so many sad, scary stories popping up in the news these days— from a tragic shooting in Orlando to ongoing unrest in Turkey—it can feel like travel is the last thing you want to do. That’s one reason why Vision of Humanity, a project of the independent organization Institute for Economics & Peace, makes its annual chart of the most and least safe countries around the world. The Global Peace Index takes into account factors like numbers of police or security personnel, presence of nuclear weapons, and political instability in order to reach its findings. Unsurprisingly, South Sudan and Syria are the two most unsafe countries in the world to visit right now, but these 10 score high marks for locals and travelers alike. 1. Iceland For the sixth year in a row, Iceland tops the safety index. The Nordic nation scored low points for homicides, number of people in jail, and terror acts. Another bonus: Being an island makes it somewhat harder to have border disputes. What more incentive do you need to jump in a thermal bath already? 2. Denmark Denmark regularly ranks among the happiest countries in the world, and now it’s also one of the safest— other than a minor conflict with Canada over an uninhabited island, that is. 3. Austria Robert Frost wrote that “good fences make good neighbors,” and that’s true of Austria, whose neighbors (including Germany and the Czech Republic) also scored high on the index. Austria gets points for low weapon imports and peaceful elections. 4. New Zealand New Zealand may be one of the world’s best destinations for gaspinducing adventure travel, but you’re more likely to be shocked by stunning beach views than by internal conflict or violence.

5. Portugal Earlier this year, Condé Nast Traveler declared Lisbon the most underrated city in Europe. The Global Peace Index only underlines that point: Portugal’s relative affordability and beauty combined with its safety make it a must-visit. 6. Czech Republic The country that was home to the Velvet Revolution gets points for low per-capita military spending and relatively few acts of violent crime. Now, won’t you please start calling it Czechia? 7. Switzerland Switzerland’s famous neutrality works in its favor for the peace index, where the country was noted for its absence in both internal and external conflicts. That probably leaves it plenty of time to complete projects like the world’s longest and deepest tunnel. 8. Canada Despite being larger than its neighbor to the south, Canada ranks much higher for peace and safety than the United States. Try visiting one the country’s most friendly cities or checking out Toronto on a stopover program. 9. Japan Japan scored high marks on the peace index for having a low number of homicides and little access to weapons. Beyond safety, the country also makes it very easy for travelers to get around, with high-speed and even invisible trains part of a mission to double the number of visitors by 2020. 10. Slovenia While Slovenia has negligible terror activity and few internal conflicts, it does have a slightly higher than average police presence, which often makes visitors to the country feel safer. That’s good news for savvy travelers hoping to explore hidden European gems like Ljubljana and the Soca River valley.

Local Sports Alex takes it from The PSC Trropical Golf from BJ's Count Back King by Derek Brook

by James Olsen

Greenwood We had 28-eager golfers waiting to take the long and sometimes boring journey to the popular Greenwood GC. One can hardly wait for the roads to be fixed as it will take approximately 20 minutes from the trip! Then we will be queuing up to play and God only knows what the fees will be like then. If you were not aware of it The AFL Season is heading to the pointed end, discussion on our bus was all about that great game of ours! Those not interested took the opportunity to catch up on some sleep! Cannot understand that. We arrived early to our tee time, Bernie McCart made comment as to how good the weather was and in no sooner saying that the heavens opened. Yes, if you have a property suffering from drought call Bernie in; he can make it rain. Fortunately playing in the second group we only had the rain for two holes. So we played A and B nines, from the yellow tees. I must say we could have gone back but not knowing how long the rain was to last we had to stick with that decision. It wasn’t long till the sun was out and it became quite balmy. Greens were fast on the front 9 and somewhat slow on the back nine. This is a very good course and at 1,350 baht all inclusive, it’s hard not to play there every month. We played two divisions A grade went down to the wire with Alex Field taking top honors from Steve Younger via the count back system. (I do believe that this is the 3rd occasion that Steve has lost top spot with the old count back). Third and fourth spots were filled by Peter MacDonald and Mike Gosden. B grade was taken out by our resident Pop Star Sandy Leiper (Cindy Lauper) from Lorraine Percy. With 3rd spot being decided once again by a count back Tony Cook the honors from John Anderson. Results: A Flight 1st - Alex Field (18) 42 points Countback 2nd - Steve Younger (11) 42 points 3rd - Peter MacDonald (17) 40 points 4th - Mike Gosden (18) 39 points

Dave Debuts as Silky Winner

by Derek Brook

Silky Oak – St This Friday the Tropical Golfers made another visit to Silky Oak. Usually this is just a once or twice/year visit for the TG, but good rates and favorable reviews have put it in the rotation a few additional times. It was a later than usual start and many of the golfers were able to sleep in an extra hour or so. Others used the time for an extra cup of courage to face the many hazards Silky has to offer. Usually golf reviews in Thailand don't mention the weather in any positive way, but this day was a rare exception. Fairly heavy clouds with no chance of rain along with an occasional breeze made it one of the most tolerable days in many months. Of course riding also helps. Silky Oak

Khao Kheow (Stableford) It is fair to say that when we make out the courses for the following month, Khao Kheow is first on the list. This is a Pete Dye course that tests every shot in the arsenal, and make one mistake and it will penalise you greatly. On this day, we were soon up at the course and with the normal quick book in were soon at the start. The test for the day was to be the B and A nines, in that order, and we were soon away on our day out. Not a lot to report, the course was in good condition, it usually is, and we were able to bimble along at a good pace. The fairways were well grassed and the rough was just that, rough. The best thing was that the greens were fast and true and all players thought they were in fine condition.

likes to make golfers nervous with several tee water carries, but they really aren't as long as they seem. Relax and hit it and you'll be fine. Fairways were in their usual excellent condition. The greens were in mostly good condition, but a few are in need of some TLC. Silky is also a scoring course! Shoot high or be left out of the presentation. This day was no exception. First place went to newcomer Dave Headington (course h’cap 24) with a sizzling 39 points. Welcome aboard Dave. After Dave came organizer Dick Warberg (22) with 37 points, beating Don Carmody (25) Peter Blackburn (17) on count-back. Then came the 36’s, 35’s and so on. Near pins: Tommy Marshall and Don Carmody

Flight winners with one of BJ’s finest Soon finished it was a quick bite, and then back into transport and back to home base which we reached nice and early. Back at BJ’s, it was soon into the results. In the A flight, zero to 24, the winner was Mashi Kaneta with a peerless 40 points, the best round of the day. In second place was Tom Herrington with 38 points, and in third was Brian Parish with 37 points. In the B flight, the winner was George King with 38 points ahead of Don Carmody in second with 37 points and Graham Buckingham in third with 34 points on countback over Gordon Clegg. Then to replaying all the shots over a few cold ones. T.T.F.N. Near Pins: Mashi Kaneta, Bryce Buckley and Tom Herrington

Mike leads the way in the low gross July 2016 PAGS Tournament from Greenwood

Another day dawned and golfers descended on the Greenwood course for the July PAGS tournament. Today’s field of 79 players which included 9 ladies had to contend with the course seeming to play long, due to the damp conditions, which required lift, clean and place being implemented. We played the C & A combination, having been a full year since we were last here for a PAGS tournament. Mike Allidi (3) shot a great round, winning the low gross with a fine 73, while his score of 38 points was also good enough to pick up 3rd spot in the A flight nett, to go with a technical as well. Equal best scores of the day went to the A flight winner, Peter Gulberg (9) with a fine 40 points, to edge Ian Parry (10) into 2nd spot on a countback, that went to the last six holes, 14/12, after both had 21 on the back 9. The ladies winner was Nantaporn Rukkid (15) with 36 points. B flight for handicaps 14 to 20 required no countbacks this month, with John Fenwick (19) on 37 points the clear winner. Last month’s winner, Simon Dutton (16) did enough to get 2nd spot with 33 points, while Neil Fidele (20) was a surprised recipient of 3rd prize with his 31 points, (surprised, but grateful). In the C flight, for handicaps 21+, there was a clear winner, Laurent Bertogliata (23) with a solid 37 points, while the minor placings again required countbacks. Louis Ventimiglia (23) just getting the better of Craig Muldoon (22) 18/16 on the back 9 holes after both had signed for 31 points. Again this month, I will throw out a few honourable mentions, to Ken Price, Gerd Riedler, Uwe Wegner any Jerry Sweetham who each picked up the maximum two technical prizes, well done to all. Dave and his team once again did a tip top job in the tucker department, with plenty of non golfers coming along to enjoy the social atmosphere of the evening with their golfing partners, family and friends. As always, there is only one person to blame if you go home hungry from The Lion Pub after a PAGS presentation. We look forward to next month’s event back at Phoenix on August 30, as I am sure all who have experienced the PAGS organisation and hospitality do. Local Sports Bunker Boys Bangpra (White Tees) Stableford Eleven players made it to Bangpra for the first game of the new month. It was glorious golfing weather and the course was in pristine condition back to the usual fast true greens. Colin Grieg in only his second game back from his summer break but with a new swing quickly made his presence felt with a fine 37 points, with 20 on the back nine, so he took first place on count back from Les Cobban who managed to claim three of the near pins. The ever reliable Geoff Parker taking third with 36 points. Looks like there is a new team back in town so last month’s contenders need to bring their A game. Results: 1st - Colin Gregg (12) 37 points 2nd - Les Cobban (8) 37 points 3rd - Geoff Parker (15) 36 points Near Pins: Les Cobban (3) and Colin Gregg Patavia (White Tees) Stableford Thirteen players made their way through the 331 repair works to Patavia again in great golfing weather. We virtually had the course to ourselves ensuring a reasonably quick trouble free round. The course was in very good condition with the greens excellent, probably not quite as fast as in the past but quick enough. The day resulted in excellent scoring with seven of the players bettering 36 points.Colin Grieg

felt pretty good following up his 1st place on Monday with 39 points only to end up in 4th place. Peter Habgood walked into the club house grinning from ear to ear only to find his 40 points only put him in third place losing on count back to Les Burns, both with 40 points. Honors of the day went to Tony Robbins whose 42 points (25 on the front nine ) won the day. Special mention also to Geoff Cox and Gerry Cooney both 38 points and Rab McDonald 37 points. Interestingly, none of the near pins went to the best scorers, Neil Carter snaring three and Jimmy Carr the other. Mountain Shadow (Blue Tees) Stableford Twelve players turned out for our game at one of our popular courses on a perfect day for golf and were greeted with a course in great shape with reasonably fast greens. The weather was kind and the cool day eventually turned into light rain as we were finishing our round. The winner on the day with a fine 39 points was Mashi Kaneta followed by Neil Carter on 37 points. Welcome back to Ross Scheifer who managed to bag a near pin.

“Tony Olcorn Memorial Shield” Butcha Helps Casa, Coach and Jockey Take the Shield! Plutaluang We ventured out to play Plutaluang in memory of Tony Olcorn (Spagoni) who unfortunately passed away on this course two years ago. Forty players turned out to play which in itself as a great recognition of Tony. It needs to be mentioned that 8 guys flew in from Brisbane Australia to take part in this day, they were; Aaron Shorten, Jason Grainger, Wayne Johnson, Mick Seaton, Butcha Seaton, Allan Upington, Dave Marshall with a special mention to Mick MacGregor who was involved with a lot of the organization. Well done, guys! Not to be over shadowed but there were also 33 locals who fronted up to play, I guess Tony will not be forgotten whilst we celebrate this day. On another note it needs to be mentioned that the Queenslanders visited the Pattaya Orphanage and shelled out some big bucks supplying this organization with food to help cater for the many. D-For would have been proud! Ten groups of four took to the challenge, playing from the yellow tees, we played north and west nines. The marshall on the day let us have two starting points, this meant that five groups went

from north and the other five groups teed from west course. The course was in good condition as you would expect from this Navy run course. This scribe considers that the greens have become a lot slicker than in the past, but played reasonably true considering the constant heavy traffic. Winning team group 9: Mike Gosden, Bucha Seaton Shane Young and (Captain) Stuart Rifkin. Longest Drive: N4 Cassa Rifkin W14 Stu Brown Back at ‘The Swan’ all was reflected as to how it went or how it could have gone. Fourty players are a big field and this scribe reckons it all went off without a hitch. “Everything went to plan” as one golfer reported to me. It was a great day with a great crew of golfers, “Tony, you would have been proud of us”! I was thanked for the fine spread of food which I have to say was polished off in no time at all.

D-for (our charity collector mutt) was given the day off but some very generous punters found a way to get some cash to him. Thank you, group 9. You & Your Pets Pets, Pools and Precautions If you have a swimming pool, you may wonder if it’s okay for your pets to take a dip and cool off. We’ve discussed the dangers to pets of various chemicals and meds found around the home, but what about chlorine used in pools? Without chlorine, pools would turn green or even black as algae and bacteria build up in the water. Fortunately, only a small amount of the chemical is needed to fend off such pollution, so it is unlikely to cause chlorine poisoning in humans or animals. Pets are more likely to become ill from a dunk in a standing pool of water, or a lake filled with unknown microorganisms such as amoeba, than they are from swimming in a pool. Drinking chlorinated water may cause minor GI irritation, but it should not cause serious issues for pets. On the other hand, pets that swim often or for long periods in chlorinated pool water may exhibit some signs of sensitivity, such as red eyes, itchy skin, or ear infections. Ask your veterinarian for a drying solution to use after swimming if your pet is prone to recurrent ear infections. The biggest pool risk for any pet is drowning. Although people mistakenly assume a dog’s instinctive paddling behavior means all dogs are

Tiny Tabby

This small tabby kitten is one of 5 lovely babies that arrived just this week. There are 3: this lovely grey colour and 2 stripey ginger ones. They were rescued from one of our local temples along with their mum Gypsy. By the time you read this article they should be old enough to be re-homed.

water-safe, dogs can panic, tire, and drown in any body of water. Same for cats—who can swim but usually do not enjoy being in water; their coats become waterlogged when submerged. Always supervise your pet when swimming and watch for any minor problems before they become major ones, whether it’s a cough, exhaustion, or red eyes. With a little monitoring and attention to your pet’s behavior, there’s no reason you can’t all enjoy a dip.

Gypsy

This lovely 3 coloured mum was rescued along with her 5 babies from one of our local temples. She is a very loving girl who has done a great job looking after her babies. She will be neutered in a few weeks time once her babies have stopped feeding from her.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being. Most of us have experienced “Brain Freeze” when eating or drinking something ice cold. The pain comes on when a blood vessel in the roof of your mouth is cooled quickly by something such as ice cream which causes some dilation of blood vessels. Cats and dogs have similar blood vessels and nerves in their mouths, so they likely experience the same uncomfortable sensation when they consume ice-cold food. Or, given the high incidence of periodontal disease,

anything frozen may cause pain in the sensitive nerves in their teeth. Be considerate when giving your pet extremely cold food or water. Do not feed them ice cream to begin with inasmuch as it is high in fat, sugar and lactose. And avoid giving them any frozen human treats; stick to vetapproved food and treats. While touching on the subject, it might be worth mentioning that your little pals deserve to have their teeth brushed daily.

Elephants are the only animals that are unable to jump.

Charlie

Charlie is one of our special cases: he is stone deaf, blind in one eye and has only limited vision in the other. Because of his disabilities he must have a secure place to live, somewhere that he cannot escape from. Also, he can only go outside when supervised He stays in an outdoor wooden cat house by day and has a big indoor cage at night.

Muffin

Muffin is one of our lovely mums. Her babies went to new homes some years ago. She is a quiet soul who prefers the company of people to other cats and so would suit someone who would prefer to have just one cat in their family. Please consider giving her the loving new home that she deserves.

Cat Corner Tip Presents from Patches

Going to the Dogs... Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like never washed a dog. ~Franklin P. Jones

You may have said "No, thanks" to your precious Patches, but your cat insists on showering you with gifts of dead mice, birds, or lizards. Don’t be offended, and certainly don’t rebuke your little pal for what is an instinctive trait. Bringing dead animals home to you is normal for cats that are allowed to roam freely. It's best to keep your cat inside. Prowling cats can have a devastating impact on ground-nesting birds and otherwise get themselves into trouble or worse. Instead, give your cat some toys she can hunt for in your home. It will give her an outlet for her predator behavior; it also will keep her--and wildlife--safe.
