Fewer Chinese in Pattaya

H

otels in Pattaya and other Thai resorts are reporting that the number of Chinese tourists has dropped by 20 percent in the last month. This is because the Thai and Chinese tourism authorities are jointly cracking down on zero-dollar tourism and the illegal use

of Thai nominees to avoid foreign ownership laws of businesses. Under the scams, tour operators offer very low prices to wannabe Chinese tourists who find out – later on – that there are many hidden costs once they arrive in Thailand. Payment is made in China

before departure which means that Chinese companies or their Thai partners are the principal beneficiaries rather than the Thai economy as a whole. Thai nominees are used to evade the restrictions on foreign ownership which leads to both defrauding tourists and avoiding the

payment of authorized taxes. Acting on instructions from Thai premier Prayut Chan-o-cha, anti-money laundering officials have been seizing coaches from transport companies allegedly involved in scams and cash amounting to five Continued on page 4

News Monks busted in Military rescues Police uninvited temple Bali Hai from jam guests at Cliff Pool party

Police and military officers joined with Banglamung Health District officers to crack down on drugs in Wat I n t an ar a m . T w o m onks found with drugs and related paraphernalia were arrested and will be sent to a rehabilitation center. Also arrested was their dealer, 72-year-old Samian Thongnork, who was holding 31 amphetamine tablets.

Military personnel joined city staffers at Bali Hai Pier to help resolve traffic jams. It seems that boat operators haggling price with potential customers were backing up traffic and blocking the road. The matter was referred to a municipal agency where it will be studied.

Bike driver killed in accident One collision, two stories

Police raided a private party at the Cliff Pool Club where several guests tested positive for drugs. The Pratumnak venue had been reported to be operating without a permit, so Col. Apichai Krobpetch, chief of Pattaya City Police Station, and a contingent of 20 officers stopped by to check. A spokesman for the company throwing the party argued that they were simply renting the club for a concert and had no knowledge of any illegalities.

Thieves rob motorbike from student

A 25-year-old man was killed when his motorbike collided with a pickup on Thepprasit Road. Arriving at the scene, a team from the Sawangboriboon Foundation and police found Siricha Saetang dead on the road. The truck driver, Pratchaya Tanchaiya, 30, was held for questioning. One witness reportedly saw the pickup cut in front of the motorbike.

The way Nirut tells it, he was driving his motorbike en route to Sukhumvit Road when a bus came out of nowhere and slammed into him. On the flip side, Supprakit says he was driving his tour bus on Sukhumvit when a motorbike crashed into the bus traveling at full speed. Bottom line, police suspect that the motorbike driver had been drinking; he was taken to hospital.

A 15-year-old student returning home on his motorbike was stopped and punched by two men on a bike, who then fled with the student’s vehicle. The student, Natal Apinate, and his father, Pitak Apinate, filed a police report which identified the assailants as 18 to 20 years old. CCTV footage is being inspected.

Woman killed in high speed crash

Drunken Russian kills infant

A motorcycle lost the battle when it crashed into a car on Sukhumvit Road. The unidentified driver of the motorbike was severely injured and his wife was killed. The driver of the car, 23-year-old Sittichai Eiammafuang, was injured. According to police, the CCTV indicated that both vehicles had been speeding.

A five-month-old baby and her mother were killed and four people were badly injured when Russian tourist Konstantin Volk crashed his car into two motorbikes near the Bali Hai Pier. Police said the Russian was inebriated and speeding. He attempted to escape but was caught in the Pratumnak area.

In a campaign to clamp down on drug use and other illegal activities throughout the city, a detachment of military and police officers has begun incursions of entertainment venues in North, Central and South Pattaya. Arrested were 20-year-old Somchai Devilao, who was busted for having an electric cigarette, and 29-year-old Pipat Suttawan found with crystal meth and related paraphernalia. The raids were led by Prapan Prathumchompoo, Banglamung permanent secretary.

News Thailand on fast track to become regional e-Commerce leader ETDA conducts market survey on an annual basis with an aim to gather a comprehensive and globally recognized set of e-Commerce statistics for Thailand. This is intended to enable relevant government agencies and private organizations as well as those involved in Thailand’s e-Commerce chain to use it as a reference or for a comparison purpose, and as part of policy making, strategic planning and the setting of guidelines for business operations, both at organizational and national levels, in response to today’s changing market environment. Gaining deeper insights into the e-Commerce industry can help e-Commerce businesses compete in an efficient and sustainable manner, regionally and internationally. Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) has engaged 527,324 e-Commerce businesses nationwide in the survey which started in April and finished in September 2016. List of the samples was given by the Thai e-Commerce Association, the Department of Business Development (DBD) and the National Statistical Office.

This quantitative and qualitative market survey targets two groups of business entrepreneurs whose business performance was used as the criteria, including a group of business entrepreneurs who have e-commerce market value of more than or equivalent to 50 million baht per year, and another with e-commerce market value less than 50 million baht per year. The first group

attended a face-to-face interview while the latter took online survey. A c c o rd i n g t o t h e s u r v e y , e-commerce players in Thailand can be classified into 8 categories: manufacturing; retail and wholesale; transportation; accommodation service; information and communication; insurance; arts, entertainment and leisure; and other services.

News Fewer Chinese in Pattaya Continued from page 1 billion baht from a variety of businesses suspected of defrauding the tax authorities. Meanwhile, Thai police have been active in rounding up foreigners working without a relevant work permit, for example tour guides, and investigating companies illegally using nominees to circumvent existing legislation. In Pattaya, locals have noticed that there seem to be fewer buses parked on main roads at night, whilst megastores have claimed that their takings from Chinese tourists have been shrinking of late. One restaurant in North Pattaya, which specializes in providing noodle dishes for Chinese vacationers, admitted profits were down of late. The Thai-Chinese owner said, “I’m paid in advance by the tour sponsors, who have Chinese mainland links, and the customers eat for free. I used to serve 600 meals in the

evening but now the total is barely 400.” Zero sum holidays have also given rise to complaints from the tourists themselves. They have complained of being forced to shop in big groups at certain stores identified by the coach driver. Some Chinese families with children have objected to being herded altogether into sex shows and forced to pay admission even for babes-inarms. The Chinese embassy in Bangkok has several times complained about the treatment of its nationals on holiday and raised concerns about overall tourist safety both in Pattaya and on Koh Larn. However, the fall in overall numbers is likely temporary. Thai tourism minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said, “Authorities have been cracking down on illegal operators and have also seized properties and licences in order to stop bad behaviour.”

But she added that overall numbers from China have been rising annually by around 20 percent. Tourist Police confirmed the belief that numbers will rise again once the shady operators and tour companies are closed down. Chinese tourism officials voiced support for the crackdown on zero sum holidays stating that the result will be more quality tour programmes of affordable prices and fewer complaints about bad treatment. In 2015 Thailand welcomed nearly eight million Chinese who injected revenue of 370 billion baht. However, much of this cash never found its way into government coffers. Most commentators expect Chinese arrivals in 2016 to surpass 10 million. To date, less than two percent of Chinese nationals have visited Thailand. However, surveys suggest that 50 percent would very much like to come.

Zika virus threatens

Chakorn Kanchanawatta, Banglamung district officer, led the Zika Virus protection seminar held at the Banglamung Public Health Office due to reports that the Chonburi, Chantaburi and Bangkok areas are at risk for the Zika virus.

Chakorn ordered public health officers to disseminate information and warnings about the virus to the nearby communities. There were reports that foreigners who live in Banglamung and Khao Maikaew already are infected.

Calling Walking Street “one of Pattaya’s main tourist attractions,” a team from City Hall and community volunteers cleaned up the area end to end. Chatepol Boonsawat, consultant to the mayor, said that it is important to maintain the cleanliness of the Walking Street because it’s value to the city.

News Energized, progressive new Focus Bolder, more powerful, more dynamic and packed with advanced technologies, the new Ford Focus has arrived in Thailand. An evolution of the nameplate, the striking new Focus introduces the next level of power, refinement and driving enjoyment. Its sleek, modern design hints at the updates that make one of the world’s most popular compact cars even better – including new and enhanced driver assistance technologies that take the hassle out of parallel and perpendicular parking. Available in five sporty colors that include Winning Blue, Candy Red, Panther Black, Magnetic Grey and Frozen White, customer bookings are now open nationwide for the new Focus EcoBoost Turbo 1.5L Sport. Priced at 1,099,000 baht, the new Focus is also ready for customer deliveries. Sophisticated design The stylish new exterior design of the Focus displays a bold face of Ford with a new level of sophistication. A lower, wider stance that emphasizes width, and a new hood that sweeps elegantly toward the signature trapezoidal grille give the car a bolder, more energized presence on the road. Slim, chiseled front headlamps link the aggressive front end to the clean, flowing lines of its sides, which kick up at the rear window. More rectangular, elongated fog-lamps add to the bolder front end. The rear of the car has a sleek new fascia and tailgate arrangement, as well as thinner tail lamps, and a sculpted rear spoiler to enhance aerodynamics. The refined and athletic exterior is complemented by a modern new interior. The simplified interior offers more space with a variety of new convenient storage options for a more comfortable driving experience. An adjustable console fits a variety of bottles and cups, and can simultaneously hold a 1-litre water bottle and a 400 mL cup. Advanced connectivity and driver assist technology The new Focus is the first vehicle in Thailand, equipped with Ford’s latest infotainment and connectivity system, SYNC 3, which offers a smarter and safer way to stay connected. Drivers can operate the car’s entertainment system and a linked smartphone with natural voice commands. SYNC 3 includes advanced

voice control and smartphone-like eight-inch colour touch screen. The new graphical interface is easy to read and features quick-access function tray along bottom of screen. SYNC 3 supports Apple Car Play and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone, including the Android Auto for Android mobile users. The new Focus is available with Enhanced Active Park Assist, which builds upon Ford’s popular Parallel Park Assist with the addition of Perpendicular Park Assist. Once activated, the system scans for available parking spaces alongside other cars. When it finds one, the system

takes control of the car’s steering to guide the vehicle into the space while the driver controls the shifting, braking and acceleration. Perpendicular Park Assist uses two new ultrasonic sensors on the rear of the car, which also enables ParkOut Assist. Park-Out Assist takes the stress out of exiting a parallel parking space by taking control of the steering while the driver operates the brake and accelerator when reversing from a perpendicular parking space. In urban driving below 50 km/h, an improved Active City Stop system can help to mitigate low-speed collisions. Using a windshield-mounted sensor to detect braking, slower-moving or stationary vehicles in front, the system pre-charges the brakes if the car is approaching a vehicle in front too quickly. If the driver fails to take action, the system reduces engine torque and automatically applies the brakes to reduce the impact of a collision. The new Focus is also equipped with Ford’s MyKey technology that will restrict the top speed or reduce the maximum volume of the audio system. Powerful, efficient and fun-to-drive The new Focus is powered by a powerful and efficient 1.5L four-cylinder EcoBoostTurbo engine with flexible fuel capability of up to E85. The new 1.5LEcoBoostengine offers 180 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 240 Nm of torque at 1,600-5,000 RPM – more than a naturally aspirated 2.0L engine – while also delivering fuel efficiency at approximately 14 kilometers per one liter. The engine uses the core EcoBoost technologies of turbocharging, high-pressure direct fuel-injection and Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing to ensure optimum performance. A new aluminum engine block helps to reduce weight, which improves performance and efficiency. A new cylinder head design with improved cooling and an integrated e x h a u s t m a n i f o l d i m p r ov e s efficiency by delivering a more efficient feed of air into the engine and helping it to operate at optimal temperatures. By minimizing the distance exhaust gases travel from the cylinders to the turbocharger, the integrated manifold also reduces turbo lag for rapid torque delivery. A more refined Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system further improves the driving experience with more precise steering and lower effort, while reducing unwanted damping and providing excellent feedback to the driver. The new Ford Focus features computer-designed high-strength steel, creating an exceptionally strong and lightweight body shell. The ultra-high-strength and boron steel making up the skeletal structure are up to four times stronger than traditional steel. It is also equipped with an advanced airbag system with six airbags, comprised of two dual front airbags, two side front airbags and two side curtain airbags. The new Ford Focus is manufactured at the Ford Thailand manufacturing facility in Rayong.

Redemptorist Center Chapel Catholic Mass Schedule

It has been a busy summer for sport with the Olympics and Paralympic Games adding to the regular sporting schedule. Thailand once again participated in both events and as in previous years the Paralympians returned home to the Land of Smiles with more gold, silver and bronze medals than their Olympic compatriots. Every four years, since Thailand joined the Paralympic Games in 1984, the athletes with disabilities have won more medals than the able bodied athletes. This year they won six gold, six silver and six bronze medals. And yet they do not get as much recognition, neither do they receive the same financial rewards as the able bodied; the two Thai gold medalists at the Olympics received 12 million baht each from the government, plus much more from private companies; the six gold medalists returning from the Paralympics will receive just over seven million. Of the 45 athletes who participated at the Rio Paralympics, seven are former students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities here in Pattaya. The Thai athletes competed in 14 sports and 63 different events and the seven

former students, two females and five male, competed in a variety of sports including athletics, javelin, powerlifting, boccia, table tennis and pistol shooting; most took up their chosen sport after being introduced to it while studying at the school. Watcharaphon Vongsa, who is a wheelchair user due to having cerebral palsy, joined the school in 2009 to study Computer Science, but left early to train with the national Boccia team which went to the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where he won a gold medal. Since then he has traveled the world competing in his sport and following the Rio Games he returned to Thailand with two gold medals which he won in the mixed individual Boccia competition and also as a member of the team competition. Former electronics student

Pichaya Kurattanasir carried home a bronze medal which he won in the 1500 m wheelchair race. Another former student, and a current teacher at the school, Narong Kasanun, came fourth in the 58 kgs powerlifting division, lifting a final weight of 165 kgs, almost two and a half times his own body weight, not an easy task when you have no use of your lower limbs. Since it’s founding in 1984 the school has a long tradition of encouraging its students to take up a sport, not only for fun, but to give a sense of achievement, to build confidence and in many instances students have been selected to represent the school, the province and the Kingdom at national and international competitions. When the next Paralympic Games opens in Tokyo in 2020, the Thai team will

once again compete, and as the parade of athletes enters the stadium many will be former students at the school in Pattaya. Once again the Paralympians will more than likely return with more medals than their able bodied fellow citizens and still receive less recognition and less reward money, something many rely on to provide for their families. The Three Kingdoms Park contains three Chinese style pagodas and a long wall with murals, where scenes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms epic are depicted. Ford Focus 1.5 EcoBoost Turbo S Downsized, Powered-Up, Fully Kitted and Sharp looking

by John K. Lindgren Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com

FORD has done it again, the third gen Ford Focus compact family hatchback called C-segment in Europe and one of the most common cars in the UK with 1.5 million sold. Ford Focus has also won many victories on the WRC (World Rally Championship) circuit.

As in the current global trend of engine-downsizing, new Ford Focus 180hp 1.5 engine is not only more powerful than the previous 2.0 liter, 170hp model but also less thirsty. Now drinking 14.4 kpl, Focus has also a new six-speed torque-converter automatic box replacing the old twinclutch gearbox. Styling: The new Ford Focus is totally refreshed outside in. Now boasting sleek, modern, toned and aggressive design elements. At the first sight you'll notice the sculpted hood with the Aston Martinesque grille. Slim front headlamps with integrated daytime running lights. The side view reveals a lower, wider stance to emphasize muscular presence. The rear looks cool with a sleek tailgate and a thinner tail lamp cluster. The sculpted rear spoiler enhances aerodynamics. The wheels are sporty 17 inch alloys. Exterior colors to choose from: Winning Blue, Black, Magnetic Grey, Frozen White and Candy Red. Interior: Clean, stylish and modern cabin with leather upholstery. Power seat for the driver and armrest plus a useful grab handle on the driver's side. The youngat-heart drivers appreciate this detail. The revised recessed instruments and reorganized switches is Ford's idea of form follows function. The comfortable rear seats space fit two adults with adequate leg and headroom. The cabin is also quieter thanks to thicker carpets and more insulation in door trim and improved engine insulation. The trunk in the back is what you expect in a 5-door hatchback, a tad limited. But I still managed to fit my new IKEA“Markus” swivel office chair. A heavy and bulky flat-pack. No problem. Fold the rear seats. Voila! Bells & Whistles: First vehicle in Thailand to come with ‘SYNC 3’, Ford’s latest in-car hands-free connectivity system with an advanced infotainment system that includes a high resolution 8 inch color display. This display gives intuitive control of several key functions including phone, audio, climate control via voice or touch. SYNC 3 supports Apple Car Play including the Android Auto for Android mobile users. One of the new Ford Focus highlights is the Enhanced Active Park Assist, which builds upon Ford’s popular Parallel Park Assist with the addition of Perpendicular Park Assist. No hands on the steering

wheel concept! Once activated, the system scans for available parking spaces alongside other cars. When it finds one, the system takes control of the car’s steering to guide the vehicle into the space while the driver controls the shifting, braking and acceleration. Perpendicular Park Assist uses two new ultrasonic sensors on the rear of the car, which also enables. ParkOut Assist. Park-Out Assist takes the stress out of exiting a parallel parking space by taking control of the steering while the driver operates the brake and accelerator when reversing from a perpendicular parking space. Engine: The new Focus is propelled by a revised, downsized, compact yet powerful and fuel efficient 1.5L fourcylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift. This EcoBoost unit pumps out 180 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. Ford Focus is a flexible-fuel vehicle and runs on E20 and E85 gasohol plus 91, 95 gasohol and pure gasoline (petrol) 95. Safety: Advanced airbag system with six airbags; two dual front airbags, two side front airbags and two side curtain airbags. In urban driving up below 50 km/h, an improved Active City Stop system

can help to mitigate low-speed collisions. Using a windshield-mounted sensor to detect braking, slower-moving or stationary vehicles in front, the system pre-charges the brakes if the car is approaching a vehicle in front too quickly. The drive: As soon as you step on it the turbo kicks in. You'll realize this is a more than a compact family hatchback. This is a beastly hot-hatch. A wolf in sheep's clothes. The three spoke leather wrapped wheel has none of that hard plastic feel but a pleasant softness to the touch, another unique new Focus feature. Once on the motorway you'll immediately realize that this car for the pro-active driver. Racingstyle sports suspension for tight cornering and high-way cruising. The Electric PowerAssisted Steering (EPAS) automatically adjusts to provide easier, lighter steering when parking and firmer steering for more control on motorways. Great overall handling at high speeds and outstanding brakes, too. Verdict: Ford’s tagline is “Go Further”. This is what FoMoCo has done. The new Ford Focus EcoBoost is bolder, more powerful, more dynamic and packed with advanced technologies and SUPER FUN to drive! Ford Focus is manufactured at the Ford Auto Alliance plant in Rayong and comes in only one trim, price: 1.099 million baht. Same price range as Honda Civic 1.5L but 100,000 baht cheaper than the range-topping Civic RS. A Focus test drive is recommend at your nearest Ford dealer.

Ford Focus 1.5 EcoBoost Sport Engine: 1.499cc 1.5 petrol-turbo Power: 180 hp Torque: 240 Nm Gearbox: 6-speed automatic Top speed: 220 km/h Combined fuel consumption: 14.4 kpl Price: 1,099 million baht www.ford.co.th

The Royal Cliff’s deVine Wine Club

Grandly Hosts a Talamonti’s Abruzzo Wine Dinner Pattaya’s foodiegentsia and oenophiles gathered recently in the opulence of the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar to enjoy the latest deVine Wine Club dinner. The host for the evening was Salvatore Campione, the international sales manager for the Asia Pacific and Middle East Market of Azienda Vinicola Talamonti, who selected the six wines to accompany the exquisite food of Executive Chef Walter Thenisch. Graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, these occasions are eagerly anticipated and enthusiastically

Oven Roasted Galician Rib Eye

Raw Yellowfin Tuna Ravioli

attended. The wine growing estate Talamonti was founded in 2001 in Loreto Aprutino, a municipality in the Pescara region. Father Alfredo and his daughter Antonella Di Tonno who run the winery today encountered the winemaking traditions of Abruzzo with great respect, but also with an undisguised view for new oenological processes. Pre-dinner canapés launched the evening paired with an excellent Prosecco Cuvee 1821 D.O.C. which was later followed by the assembled guests moving down to the Royal Grill Room where the tables had

Butter Poached Maine Lobster Tail

been set and the wines ready for the first pouring of the evening, a Trebi Trebbiano d’Abruzzo D.O.C. 2015. Made from 100 percent eponymous grape, this increasingly popular wine displays a superb quality with a refreshing and perfect balance and elegant flavours. Chef had excelled himself with an innovative starter of molded raw yellowfish tuna in the style of ravioli served with torn basil leaves, crunchy croutons and puddles of Kalamata tapenade. Next followed another standout dish of soft butter-poached Maine lobster tail with baby pea shoots, butternut squash and a lively

Salvatore Campione

pistachio vinaigrette. Another dream of a dish with its soft, tender lobster and exciting vegetables, it needed a special wine to complement the delicate nuances. Trabocchetto Pecorino Colline Pescaresi I.G.T. 2014 with its light skinned grape, minerally dry with an elegant floral base of arcacia and jasmine filled the bill completely. A refreshing green apple and peach sorbet refreshed the palate before embarking on the next three courses. Moda Montepulciano d'Abruzzo D.O.C. 2014 has won numerous prizes and is one of the most popular wines of the region. Exhibiting a strong, robust colour and yet yielding soft flavours and gentle tannins it is a pleasure to drink this this wine. Combined with the new marriage of oven roasted Galician Rib Eye Steak, porciini mushrooms, wilted Tusan Kale, vine ripened vine tomatoes and a Barolo wine reduction, it is a heavenly confluence. Steak doesn’t get any better than this critically acclaimed beef with its legendary reputation. Reared between 8 and 12 years for extraordinary depth, flavour and texture. High steaks indeed to produce this quality of beef.

Cheese and the best Italian at that then made a play for our table. Sweet luscious Gorgonzola, Parmesan, a soft cow's cheese, and mountain cheeses together with another gem of the evening, a rich Tre Saggi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2013. What a great wine this is, cardinal red with purple hues and a complex and inviting nose culiminating in a long elegant finish. The dessert course again pulled out more surprises with a deconstructed tiramisu and a perfectly lovely Castello del Poggio Moscato I.G.T. NV with its straw yellow colour, golden reflections and intense flavours of scents and peaches, it enchanted with its fresh pleasantly sweet character. Coffee, tea and almond biscottis by Chef Frederic of Paris provided the final the last goodnight kiss and sweetly lowered the curtain to another extraordinary deVine Wine Club dinner. Our hats off to all involved. These superb deVine Wine Club Dinners are held every few months and members and non-members are always welcome. Details on membership is on request from The Royal Cliff Hotels Group website on www.royalcliff.com.

AMADEUS PRESENTS THE OTTAVIANI WINE DINNER

Chef Alberto Bruni

Amadeus is the latest incarnation for this imposing restaurant which sits at the corner of Jomtien Soi 5. Under the aegis of it’s new owners, the ebullient chef, Alberto Bruni (latterly of Centara Grand Mirage and Sofitel Centara Grande Bangkok) and his charming wife, Photchani (Kikka) Kaeosathit, it has been reinvented, revamped and has emerged a three zoned leisure destination with a laid-back

tapas restaurant, a sleek, uber-sophisticated fine dining area and a super-sophisticated urbane cocktail lounge with classy leather sofas, low level tables and flatteringly subdued lighting making it the perfect place to sit back, relax and sip luxury cocktails. The snazzily lit cocktail is more than well stocked with speciality spirits, including eight brands of tequila, all the proprietary brands needed and a plethora of Italian liquers that are enjoyed as apertivos, digestives and often also important ingredients for some of Italy’s favourite desserts. For casual dining, sit in the front conservatory-like restaurant with window tables overlooking the street and a big ingredience-filled fridge where all the tapas mixture are on display and where the two hams on the bone, an Italian boneless ham prepared according to an age-old recipe by Benedictine monks, covered with red and green pepper for its unmistakable branding. The other is the famous Spanish Iberico Jamon made exclusively from black Iberian pigs both just waiting to be sliced and enjoyed. We were invited to enjoy the restaurant's latest event, an Ottaviani Wine Dinner. This Emilia-Romagna wine estate is truly a family business passed down from generation to generation in continual development. Davide is the wine maker, Milena heads administration, Marco the logistics guru and Massimo the globe trotter who touches down on 25 countries a year to spread the word of wine and love of his country. We met Massimo at the wine dinner and a more enthusiastic export manager we are yet to meet.

The evening was launched with flutes of Sinfonia Sparkling Chardonnay Ottaviani to set the scene for the pageant of dishes to come. The first course featured creamy Burrata Mozzarella and heritage tomatoes amalgamated together to produce the famous Caprese salad bursting with flavours and textures but with the added element of the drizzled black fish roe. Paring with this dish was a Filare 15 Cabenet Ottaviani. A compact ruby red, full flavoured and rich with tannins made surprisingly good friends with the vibrant salad. Next up was a labour of love for Chef Alberto, Fregole pasta with Italian sausage and Porcini mushrooms. A Sardinian speciality pasta, it is known as Sardinian cous cous for its texture and appearance. Labour intensive, the pasta is half roasted and then stirred with lashings of stock in the mode of risotto. Porcini mushrooms shine through the dish accompanied by the much loved Italian sausage for textural interplay. It was accompanied by a Cabernet Sangiovese, Novecentro 28 Ottaviani, rich in fruit with a opulent ruby taste, it effortlessly fused with the vitality of the pasta. The main course produced a house signature slow braised lamb shank (36 hours) with sautéed spinach. Is there a better way to serve lamb? Soft, moist and mouth-watering, it fell away from the bone to merge with the gravy jus and vegetables. Mick called it one of the best he had eaten in a very long while. The powerful bottle to vie with this full-bodied dish was the celebrated Merlot Rubicone Ottaviani. 100 percent Merlot with a big 15 percent alcohol content with its spicy, fruity flavours, it proved the perfect gentlemen to escort the lovingly prepared lamb. An Oreo cheesecake with a wild berry sauce sweetly concluded the evening. The a la carte menu is an interesting collection of tapas, steaks, pittzas, and much more. Where to start from the 20-item tapas menu? Prices range from B.95 to B.145 for the steamed marinated seafood in olive oil and the kitchen will prepare a selection of a dozen dishes for sharing (B.1,200) or orders can be placed individually for each portion. Chef prepared us a tasting menu of dishes and we were served Bresaola rolls with Mascarpone cheese, marinated carpaccio of Trentino beef

Oreo Cheesecake

with rocket and cheese, octopus with potato salad, smoked salmon with cheese, servings of those superb hams accompanied by big juicy Italian olives and a brilliant Speck smoked ham. It was all outstanding, the quality of the ingredients top notch topped with excellent preparation and sourcing. Pizzas are thin, crisp and traditional, Twenty Thieves Platter Margherita (B.270) through Diavola (spicy salami), Italian sausage with tomato, mozzarella and mushroom to the top of the pile the Amadeus special of tomato, mozzarella, smoked salmon and shrimps. Beef eaters won’t be disappointed with the grilled Australian grain fed rib eye (B.950) or the impressive grilled super steak of Australian Wagyu 4 prime rib weighing in at over 1 kg for all you trencherman out there. Amadeus is an on trend, contemporary Italian restaurant which serves a terrific array of quality tapas and top notch Italian cuisine which fits with any occasion or social gathering, it can provide the lavishness of fine dining or the zoosh of a tapas plate complemented by creative cocktails and fine wines. Forecourt parking is available if you flash your lights at the barrier for admittance. Amadeus is opposite Rompho Market at the corner of Soi 5, Jomtien Second Road. Open daily from 5 to 11 pm Tel: 095 7181 534 The wines are available at IF and B Store on Sukhumvit road 50 meters before Pattaya Klang coming from Pattaya Tai.

A different approach to control your weight by Thonglor Clinic

The homeopathic approach is a safe and natural approach to weight control and body contouring. Homeopathic principles of teaching the body to heal itself are well documented. Weight loss always involves the issue of skin tightening. As the weight drops, sometimes the skin loses some of its elasticity because it has been stretched for too long. Omeoformula preparations address this problem and provide a natural detoxification at the same time, returning you to a healthier, thinner self. Another complaint of weight loss is the lack of energy that often comes with dieting. We have less energy as the calories are reduced; the metabolic pathways tend to go into a sluggish mode. Omeoformula preparations help to control these energy fluctuations by teaching the body’s metabolic clock to keep on ticking at an optimal speed. The metabolic stimulation also helps to prevent disease by maintaining perfect balance in your system. What is Omeoformula 1-2-3? Omeoformula 1-2-3 is the answer for people who are looking for best method to lose weight safely and get healthy at the same time. Omeoformula 1-2-3, based on homeopathy, is a natural healing method found by Dr. Samuel Hannemann in Germany 200 years ago. Since then, homeopathy has been spreading and is well accepted because of its efficacy without side effects for those of all ages and genders throughout all European countries and America. Omeoformula 1-2-3 treatment is based on natural ingredients such as multi-vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and cell extracts of different excretory, vascular, muscular, and hormonal systems. All these ingredients must be prepared trough homeopathic procedures; multiple dilutions are done with potentiation processes. A common saying in homeopathy is “LIKE cures LIKE.” This means that by

recognizing the cause of the problem and its physical source, we can use the same element to cure it by diluting it into the minimum strength. In effect being a similar method as a vaccination! How does Omeoformula 1-2-3 works? Omeoformula 1-2-3 helps to reduce weight to firm the areas and works to detoxify your body at the source of the problem. Every natural ingredient in Omeoformula 1-2-3 will act in a different phase and work systemically to synergize each other into the best possible effects. The four-phase action of Omeoformula 1-2-3 is: 1-Detoxification is the most important procedure to eliminate and release all waste and toxins from the body. Tropical Tress Tips for Tourists…and Expats

Whether you’re in Pattaya on a brief holiday or enjoying Paradise forever as an expat, take care to avoid damaging your hair in the tropical sun and heat. A great way to beat the heat is to keep hair off your neck. Ponytails, braids, ballerina buns, and topknots are classic summer styles. If you need help keeping your locks in place, use dry shampoo or hair powder to add grip, texture, and volume. A shorter, cropped ’do is an easier option -- pageboys and pixies always look cool. Ask your stylist for a face-flattering cut. Then there’s the damage to your hair caused by the sun. Just like your skin, UV rays can damage your hair. Too much sun dries it out and makes it prone to breakage. Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat or spray sunscreen on your hair and work it into the roots. Baby your sun-soaked hair with more moisture. Use a mask once or twice a week to condition, repair, and strengthen. For extremely dry, damaged, and brittle hair, mix in a few drops of oil before applying. Then, wrap hair in a warm, wet towel, and cover with a plastic bag for 5-10 minutes before rinsing well. Swimming in chlorinated pools can also pose hair problems — especially for blondes. Chlorine can leave you hair dull and sometimes even green in color. Restore your natural color by washing your hair with aspirin. Simply dissolve six tablets in water and coat hair. Rinse out after 10 minutes and repeat daily until color begins to brighten. Got frizzies? Tame those fly-aways with regular moisturizing to repair and strengthen the hair. Use treatment oils before styling (or a few drops mixed into

your conditioner) to smooth strands as well. Finish your style with a humidity-resistant hairspray. Not with a hair dryer. Taking the heat out of styling is a great way to stay cool (and keep hair healthy). With shorter styles, it’s easy to wash and go. To get loose, beachy waves, twist longer locks into a bun or topknot after washing at night. Take it down in the morning, smooth on a shine or texturizing product, and you’re good to go. At any length, a slicked-back 'do is a great summer look as well.

When you're born, you have about 300 bones. By the time you're a grownup, you've only got 206. The reason: As babies grow, some of their bones fuse together. Some infant bones are made entirely of soft, flexible tissue called cartilage that’s slowly replaced by hard bone as the baby develops.

Cinebody S6 The iPhone is already great at shooting video. The Cinebody S6 makes it better. Designed to recall cameras of yore, it has its own microphone, a trigger that makes it easy to start and stop recording, a cold shoe for mounting accessories, a patentpending focusing eyepiece, and interchangeable 58mm lenses that give you more shooting options than the built-in glass. When used with the companion app, you can also control exposure, frame rate, and focus, giving you a filming rig far more versatile than the built-in Camera app. Orders will start shipping October.

GoPro Karma Drone

Leave your favorite mount behind and take to the skies with the GoPro Karma Drone. More than a simple camera drone, the Karma is actually a series of separate accessories that work together to deliver great-looking aerial footage. It starts with the quadcopter itself, which has a folding design, a top speed of 35mph, and a run time of 20 minutes. The Karma Grip stabilizer slides inside, doing its best to keep your video smooth whether it's attached to the drone, a standard GoPro mount, or handheld. Finally, the touchscreen controller lets even novices get up and running with ease. The entire kit packs into a backback case, and is compatible with the new GoPro Hero 5 Black, Hero 5 Session, and the Hero 4.

Legal Advice

LEGAL ADVICE

by Magna Carta Law Office

BUILDING PERMIT What is a building permit? A building permit is a license issued by the Division of Public Works of the local municipality, that legally authorizes the owner or his/her agent to commence construction according to the plan submitted. The issuance of a building permit provides building officials with the means to enforce the requirements of the Building Control Act and other applicable standards to ensure strict compliance. Why is a building permit required? Under Thai law, it is necessary to obtain authorization from the local administration for any construction, alteration, and demolition of buildings. Building permits are required to ensure that building safety standards and zoning requirements are satisfied for the general safety of the public. Zoning is a system of developing a city or district plan in which various geographic areas (zones) are restricted to certain uses and development, such as residential, industrial, commercial, agricultural, parks, schools and other purposes. To avoid problems in the future, it is necessary to check the zoning regulations of the specific area as several zoning restrictions may apply. They may include some or all of the following depending on the district: • Height and width of the structure • Building lot size • Distance from the shore and to another property • The use of the structure (residential, commercial, industrial) • Height of land above sea level • Type and color of roof When is a building permit required? A building permit is required when: 1. Constructing a new building 2. Altering an existing building by changing the structure of the building such as size, shape, proportion, weight support and the materials used for construction 3. Destructing or relocating a building 4. Changing the usage of a building 5. Modifying or using the parking, U-turn, car entrance and/or exit for another purpose How long does the building permit approval process take? The consideration for the approval of a building permit application for a 2-storey residential building takes a maximum of 20 days, excluding the length of time to amend the building plan. The consideration for the approval of a building permit application for a large commercial building takes 33 days, excluding the period needed to amend the building plan.

Property Report Congress Thailand debuts with local and international expats on the panel

The center is established as the company’s Factory Automation (FA) showroom in Southeast Asia, aimed at showcasing highly-efficient manufacturing technologies and equipment.

Thai Vietjet received a third new A320 Sharklet aircraft at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The airline is now set to launch maiden flights to Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai later this month. With the additional aircraft, Thai Vietjet now operates a whole fleet of modern, well-furnished A320s, which carry the registration codes ofHS-VKA, HS-VKB and HS-VKC. Each aircraft has also been given a name of flower in accordance with the last letter of registration, including Amaryllis, Begonia and Camellia. One of the aircraft will also be the first wearing the livery of “Amazing Thailand”

logo in the next few days. The newly received Sharklet A320 aircraft come equipped with a new fuel-saving wing tip device, which helps Vietjet to reduce impact to the environment while enabling the airline to save operational costs, thus reduce airfares for all passengers. Each of the new aircraft also features comfy leather-covered seats, spacious leg-room and a brilliantly cozy design, all of which maximize every passenger’s flight experience with Vietjet. Nguyen Thi ThuyBinh, vice president of Vietjet, said “Our commitment in developing tourism in Thailand has become a greater reality than ever today with this

third aircraft joining our growing fleet. Our aircraft now are in good shape to further meet increasing travel demand of Thai people and international tourists in the Land of Smiles. We are proud to operate a new, modern and dynamic fleet and as always we are committed to operating a new generation of aircraft to bring our passengers comfortable and high-quality flights.” The airline last month announced its ‘domestic debut’ in Thailand by launching three new internal routes in the Land of Smiles – Bangkok–Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Phuket, and PhuketChiang Rai – as well as one international route from Bangkok to Haiphong (Vietnam). The airline already operates direct routes from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Hanoi.

Youth Focus Play-Based Learning

by Daria Bredow

About the importance of play in the early years The best way to prepare your preschool child for the academic work in primary school is: let it play! When you are a teacher in the Early Years Foundation Stage, you often meet parents who ask you: "What does my child learn in school? I only see them playing all day long." The short answer is: "They learn everything they need right now!" Parents, especially in Asia, often think, that the best way to prepare their child for school is to teach them the ABC or numbers as early as possible. They think, the earlier my child knows the ABC, the better and more successful they will be in school later. But that’s simply wrong. Children learn best and retain the most information during hands-on-learning, which engage all their senses. PlayBased-Learning, which means exploring, discovering, handling, testing, experimenting with all senses will let your child truly understand the world he or she lives in. By giving children the opportunity to investigate materials, you’re helping them develop and refine their cognitive, social and emotional, physical, creative and linguistic skills.

For children under 5, all types of play are essential for their development and early learning. Play gives the children endless ways to develop and improve their gross and fine motor skills, co-ordination and concentration. Also how to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a group. While playing, they use all their senses to discover and explore their environment, and develop their imagination, creative thinking and ability to solve problems and experiment with solutions. In short: play masters all the skills they'll need for academic subjects later on. Gross-motor-skills Outdoor play gives your child a great chance for improving the gross-motorskills. Running, jumping, balancing, climbing etc. will let your child learn how to control his body and what the words “forward, backwards, up and down” means. Did you know, that a child who is not able to walk backwards is also not able to subtract? That simple example shows the importance of the interaction of body (movement) and mind (think).

Roald Dahl Day at GIS by Mark Beales photos by Ritche Guisona Garden International School (GIS) celebrated the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl's birth with golden tickets, a Dream Jar and lots of colourful characters. Languages' Prefect Narisa organised a day of events on September 13 to celebrate the famous children's author, who wrote classics such as Matilda, BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In true Willy Wonka-style, a 1,000 chocolate bars were sold, and inside some were the famous golden tickets. Students who were lucky enough to get a golden ticket received Roald Dahl books as prizes.

Students also wrote down their wishes and dreams, then put them in a Dream Jar, similar to the one featured in BFG. The messages were later distributed randomly to other students. The chocolate sales raised 6,000 baht for one of the school's chosen charities. In Primary, students held a parade in the morning as they dressed up as Roald Dahl characters. At lunchtime, IB1 students (who also dressed up for the day) performed a special Roald Dahl-inspired dance at the canteen for other students. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

Fine motor skills While your child is handling, manipulating and playing with different materials, he learns how to control his hands and fingers. It’s improving his fine-motorskills which will help him later to hold and control a pencil. It is simple: if I can’t control my fingers, I am not able to draw a straight line for the letter I or a circle for the letter O. Cognitive Skills While playing, your child will build math and science skills such as: - comparing size (big versus small), - counting (matching numbers to objects), - timing (does water or oil move faster?), - matching (same sizes or shapes), and - sorting and classifying (buttons, beans or rice) When your child is playing, have you already realised, that he or she grows into little scientists? They are making predictions and observations, and even develop analysis skills such as: - cause and effect (what happens when I add water to sand?),

- gravity (water slides down a funnel, not up) and - states of matter (ice melts). Research shows that hands-on-learning builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks. That means: present a child with a problem and let him play with various materials (with which to find a solution), you can almost see the connections their brains are making. Linguistic Children can’t define parts of language until they’ve

experienced the true meaning of the word. Play encourages children to use descriptive and expressive language, and to find the meaning behind the word. For instance, you can explain the word “wet” with a 1,000 words or even pictures, but you won’t understand until you put your hand into water. Even a simple story time advances pre-reading skills like rhyming, wordplay, and the ability to follow a plot. Montessori: “Teach me to do it myself!” Your child is learning constantly and you can be sure, that your child is learning what it needs to

learn right now. See your child as an expert for his own development and don’t force your child to learn something when it’s not the right time. We, the teachers and parents, should understand ourselves as guides for the children who offers new opportunities and helpful materials and who permanently promote independence. Up to the motto: “Learning by doing” and “Help me to do it myself ”. So, please don’t tell your child what to learn, let him play, no I mean: learn! Daria Bredow is a Preschool B1 Teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

GIS Welcomes New Prefects by Mark Beales photos by Ritche Guisona

Garden International School (GIS) has officially welcomed its new prefects for 2016-17. A whole school assembly took place on September 9, where students and parents came to see the prefects' inauguration. GIS Principal Hawtree welcomed everyone and then

outgoing Head Boy Gear and Head Girl Berenice introduced this year's prefects. They are Shilpi, who will represent Humanities, Narisa (Languages), Shomit (Science), Tara (Creativity), Prem (Activity) and Jignil (Service). After reading out a pledge to help the school, the prefects signed a contract and were presented with a special leadership wristband from their mentors and a prefect badge from their parents. Over the year the six prefects will represent the school and help organise many events. At the assembly, the new Head Boy and Head Girl were also revealed - they are Jignil and Shilpi. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories The usual tale is that Heinrich Himmler, former head of the SS and the Gestapo, committed suicide with a cyanide pill whilst in British custody in northern Germany in late May 1945. There are photos to prove he died in this way after he managed to flick the pill, hiding in his back teeth, whilst under interrogation. British witnesses told in

graphic detail how they had physically upended the former Reichsfuhrer and tried to use a stomach pump in a desperate attempt to save his life, but to no avail. After all, goes the usual story, Himmler needed to be put on trial with the other nazi leaders for his major role in atrocities and war crimes. Himmler was then buried in an unmarked grave in the

The British murdered Heinrich Himmler depths of a nearby forest. There have always been those who think the above account is bunkum, preferring to believe that Himmler was murdered on British prime minister Churchill’s personal orders. Why would he want Himmler dead? Well, Himmler had been involved in secret negotiations (failed of course) with both the Russians and the British since 1943 to try to bring about a cease-fire on both the eastern and the western fronts. Any publicity now could damage the British premier’s reputation. Put another way, Himmler knew rather too much about war secrets than Churchill believed to be right and proper. If Himmler was put on the stand at the Nuremburg trials, goodness knows what he might say. Certainly the Reichsfuhrer was in a position to embarrass Churchill publicly since the latter had always denied there had been secret negotiations with the Nazi leadership.

Author Martin Allen in 2005 wrote a book ‘Himmler’s Secret War’ which recounted British perfidy and double-dealing during the war and sought to prove the Churchill kill order. For example, there was one document with a margin note by Churchill maintaining that Himmler, if caught, had to be put to death. Unfortunately for the conspiracy theorists, the Public Record Office in London researched the original material and came to the conclusion that the incriminating documents were in fact forgeries. For example, letter-heads on the correspondence supposedly written in World War Two had been created on a highquality laser printer – a technology not known in the 1940s. Also, signatures were found to have been written over pencil tracings. It looked for a while as if the British conspiracy theory had collapsed. But author Lane hit back a few years later with a claim that

the documents he had seen at the Public Record Office were genuine, but somebody later had exchanged the real stuff for forgeries in order to discredit his research and to protect Churchill’s reputation. In the last few years, the conspiracy debate has been reignited by other right-wing writers. Thus David Irving, who is writing a full scale biography of Himmler, has pointed out that Himmler’s nose was broken during his death struggle according to the autopsy. Did Himmler willingly swallow a tablet concealed in his mouth or was the dose of death forced down his throat? Irving also points out that the autopsy report, which has survived, never gave the actual cause of death and, moreover, had one of its pages completely retyped. He also asks how Himmler managed to conceal a cyanide tablet in his

mouth which was overlooked by one examining doctor. Himmler is known to have eaten a thick, British army bacon sandwich before his death, so is it likely there was a death capsule in his mouth at the time? Some Himmler files in the Public Record Office are sealed until 2045, one hundred years after the event in question. Perhaps only then will a definitive answer be given about the admittedly mysterious death of Heinrich Himmler.

This & That Your Pattaya Horrorscope

by Karen Burns, www.UrbaneWomen.com

Are You Getting Married? Ask Yourself These Five Questions First! Getting married is exciting, but it’s also a huge decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

3. How Close Will You Be With Family and Friends?

by Professor Blunt

(Jan 23-Feb 22)  Aquarius You are a complete disaster

here in Pattaya. You abuse your wife terribly by slapping her on the thighs even though you know full well she has painful piles. Nobody likes you and many of the bars which have closed in your area blame you for having been a regular patron. The stars advise you to return home to Manchester at once because your dog is ill. If you haven’t got a dog it’ll be the cat. Pisces (Feb 23 – Mar 22) The good news is that you have won first prize in a travel magazine competition and will be visiting the Taj Mahal. The bad news is that this is an Indian restaurant near Sri Racha which is currently closed for redecoration. Like most Pisceans you are going deaf which means your family never watches TV in your presence. You will need to pay for company in future. Aries (Mar 23-Apr 22) Aries means “the ram” but this is plainly a joke in your case. The only thing Viagra does for you is to give you a stiff neck. You are popular in Walking Street go-go bars only because the dancers know you tip heavily and never pay the off fee. It is predicted that you will be able to have sex the next time Mars crosses Venus but, unfortunately, the scheduled date is in 2075. Taurus (April 23-May 22) You must learn to make the most of a bad job. For example, you will shortly discover that you’ll run out of cornflakes by Tuesday night, but it will then come as a relief that you have no milk left anyway by Monday night. Do keep a sense of perspective. Remember that shortly before Hitler committed suicide he enjoyed a plate of vegetarian spaghetti. Gemini (May 23-June 22) With Saturn in the ascendancy, you certainly need a refreshing change in life. Try swimming from Pattaya beach to Ko Larn island, but do be on the lookout for mischievous jet skis particularly if you are feeling short of breath. If you do make it to Ko Larn, best not to try and swim back as Geminis are invariably bad losers. Remember too that you will need to pay heavily for any jet ski damage. Cancer (June 23-July 22) That lucky escape you had a few years back wasn’t actually a lucky escape at all. You died which is why everybody always seems to be ignoring you and seeing right through you. There is no point in reading this column in future editions as the information and advice is strictly for the living. The only cheery thing I can say is that there’s no need now to look both ways before crossing the road.

If you’re eager to walk down the aisle, but unsure whether you’ve found the right person to do it with, ask yourself the following five questions before you agree to say “I do”. 1. What Does “Commitment” Mean to You?

Before you get married, it’s important that you discuss commitment with your partner. Make sure that it means the same thing for both of you. If the two of you have different ideas of what a committed relationship entails, there is bound to be trouble on the horizon in your future marriage. What one person finds important may be inconsequential to the other and this can lead to frustration and hostility. It is strongly advised that you talk it over with your prospective spouse, and make sure that you both have the same ideas regarding relationships and faithfulness. You might be disappointed by what you find out – but better now than after the wedding.

He may want to spend all his time with you, but you might love having your Friday night out with the girls. Or maybe he finds it important to always have Sunday lunch at Mom’s house, while you’d prefer to spend Sundays just the two of you at home or at the park. These are things that you need to know before you tie the knot. They are the kinds of differences in opinion that can have quite a negative impact on your marital bliss. You should also talk about the importance of holidays with the family and how often you’ll need to visit the parents. You may also want to discuss any family members with mental illness or addiction problems, as these things sometimes have a way of interfering in your life. 4. How Do You Both Handle Stress? How you deal with your own stress and anger is one thing you need to be aware of. But how will you react when it’s your partner who is stressed out or angry? The strongest relationships are built by couples who are able to support their partner through difficult times and empathize with their partner’s anger. If you and your partner have a habit of feeding off each other’s stress, creating situations that are progressively more explosive, you need to work on your problem solving skills before you move in together. If not, the odds are your marriage won’t last. 5. How Do You Express Your Love?

Money is one of the top reasons for fights, arguments and acrimony in marriages and other relationships. If saving is important to you, but he loves to spend, it can create a lot of hard feelings. Make sure you understand each other’s money habits and try to find a way that you can meet in the middle. A financial adviser may be able to help you come up with a way to share expenses that is fair to both of you and helps you avoid the power struggles.

2. What Are Your Financial Habits?

We all have a need to know that we are loved. But each of us has different ways of showing our love to others. He might feel like working hard and supporting his family makes it obvious that he loves you. Meanwhile, you may be feeling neglected because he never stops to give you a hug. It’s vital to your relationship that you share those feelings. You should never feel that you’re being needy; the need for expressed love is universal. When you’re both on the same page about showing and expressing your love, and both are ready to accept that love, you’ll know you’re ready for marriage. Leo (July 23-August 22) The  widow of an African dictator will send you an email this week asking if you could provide a home for 20 million US dollars which are locked up in a bonded warehouse in Mauretania as there is no forwarding address. If you are tempted to go and check for yourself, remember that there are no direct flights from U Tapao airport. Your lucky number is 13 and always will be. Virgo (August 23-Sep 22) You are obsessed with knowing what the future will bring. Certainly you will step into at least one dog poop on the pavement before Christmas and it’s equally sure that you will not be meeting Elvis Presley. Like most Virgos you are from virginal in a dissolute lifestyle and it might be a good idea to invest in a book on sexually transmitted diseases before the unsightly blotches appear. Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22) As you are well aware, drink killed your grandfather when ten crates of beer fell on him as he was trying to find his bus pass. So you need to be careful where booze is concerned. Like most Librans you are frankly thick. Thus it is simply untrue that Alcoholics Anonymous is a secret society which encourages you to give a false name in the bars and clubs you visit after dark. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 22) It really is time you took a long hard look at yourself in the mirror. If you see nothing at all, please do not panic. But be open to the possibility that you may be a vampire. Warning signs are that you start hanging around the blood bank area of hospitals or begin asking for no garlic please when you order a curry. Do try to avoid silver bullets or sleeping in a room without curtains. Sagittarius (Nov 23-Dec 22) If you were born in early December, be aware that many other cross dressers also have this birth sign. It’s very difficult to be a transvestite if you are ugly and have big feet, but you will have to do your best and soldier on. However, there is no need to be lonely as Walking Street is full of gender benders just like you. However, leave your car keys and credit cards at home. Capricorn (Dec 23-Jan 22) You are a total cynic. In a previous life you were a survivor from the Titanic and chuckled all night in the bobbing lifeboat because you had sold your shares in the White Star line the day before. You are also extremely mean as your idea of an Indian meal is a Red Cross parcel and a portion of boiled rice. You disgust me. Don’t play Michael Jackson music in playgrounds as you might be misunderstood.

Most of the lads who signed up, showed up, and in the end they were glad they did. Some 14 of us set out for the Emerald anyway, and the closer we got to the course the brighter the skies got. Four others chickened out. The first two groups had a light mist off the tee box, but it all stopped shortly after that. By the end of the round we were putting on the sunscreen! The Emerald was in great condition, especially considering the rains of late. There were a few greens with wormy dirt (that’s probably not the horticultural name), but the rest of it was great. We played off the white tees but as we got around, we saw that six tees were really off the reds so some holes played very short. On to the golf and scoring and if you only had 38 points like me, you were out of the picture. Got 39 you say? No joy there either. Forty points was the cut-off and Fred Birch along with Chris Smith had their winning hopes shot down after some terrific play. Nice shooting guys, but not good enough as our mate from Aberdeen did little wrong out there today. Before that story, the Caddy Smile near pin went to John Finneaux.

Mind when we all signed in and got to the first tee we knew we were in for a great day. No one in front, or as it happened behind. We played the A & C nines in that order and we knew we were lucky when we were told buggies could drive on the fairways with the usual restrictions. All this and the best clubhouse in the business, what does one want on a day out? This was all good news as the drive up there is a little bitty, major changes in the roadwork's can cause major problems and delays and in fact despite leaving last, ‘The Mashi’ somehow managed to end up there first. Full Metal Dojo delivered a thrilling spectacle at their most recent MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event last Saturday night at Insanity Nightclub, Bangkok – FMD12: The 37th Chamber. Full Metal Dojo also announced that as part of their support of the new Thailand Mixed Martial Arts Federation (TMMAF) they will hold an all-amateur tournament for Thai MMA fighters across four regions of Thailand from January next year, under the banner – Made in Thailand. The winners in the various weight categories will then represent Thailand at the prestigious 2017 International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) World Championships, part of the UFC’s annual International Fight Week in Las Vegas. FMD12: The 37th Chamberproved once again Full Metal Dojo’s understanding that two wellmatched MMA fighters make good MMA shows, with a 10-fight card featuring some of the toughest, most closelyfought wars of attrition ever seen in the Dojo. In the main event, American Emilio Utturio (84) edged a split decision win over Brazilian Daniel Hortegas (3-3) in a blood, sweat and tears contest. The Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket standout proved his well-rounded skills against the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt practitioner and finished in the ascendancy, although both fighters showed incredible heart to keep up the frenetic pace. But the fight-of-the-night saw Iran’s Masoud Ranjbar (3-0) from AKA Thailand, Phuket, force a verbal tapout of the promising British brawler Jamie Sloane (6-3), who dominated the Iranian with his boxing, but was worn down and unable to continue at the end of the second round. This was a memorable battle, where Sloane had Ranjbar in all kinds of trouble, almost knocked-out on his feet, but the courageous Iranian found the strength to land crucial take-downs and fatal groundand-pound, which eventually exhausted the brave Brit. Another man who was dominant on the feet, but lost the war on the ground was the ever-popular 18-year old Cambodian Thai Rithy (5-2) who scored some heavy bombs on Filipino Richard Corminal (4-1), but was impressively taken down and finished via ground-and-pound in round two. Both fighters showed

their fighting heart, swinging wild punches at each other, yet the grappling advantage was held by Corminal as he proved his worth against fan favourite Rithy, also winning some new fans of his own. FMD founder and host, Jon Nutt, saved the day by stepping into the cage on one day’s notice as a last minute stand-in, and had a brief, but memorable minute in the Dojo with ripped Brazilian heavyweight Marcelo Tenorio (4-1), as they traded kicks and punches before Tenorio forced Nutt to tap-out via head-lock. Elsewhere, performanceof-the-night contender was Bangkok’s Settawut “Ben Ten” Nemthanorm, who landed a thunderous headkick to Chiang Mai’s Nat Natchayangkul in the first round, before sinking in a textbook rear-naked choke, forcing the tap-out in the second stanza. Dominant displays came from two high-flying Thai prospects, who were both trained up in the muay Thai tradition, before transitioning into MMA, and now fighting in both disciplines. Thanonsaklek “Top Noi”

Tiger Muay Thai (2-1) notched his second win in the Dojo with a swift and brutal win over Anton Larsson (21). Yodkaikaew “Y2K” Fairtex (3-1) from Fairtex Gym, Pattaya, also destroyed Jirawat “Machida” Anujai with his superior stand-up skills. Phuket Top Team’s American wrestling stand-out, TJ McKenzie (2-0) returned to the Dojo and once again showed his steely mindset, surviving some troubled moments to secure a win over Iran’s Shahin Najafi. In the only women’s fight of the night, Singapore’s Tiffany Hui Hoon (3-0) made short work of Surarak Kamla, who stepped in on a week’s notice and made her professional debut. Tiffany from Singapore’s Juggernaut Fight Club got her down quickly and showed her no mercy, finishing her within a minute. In the only amateur fight of the night, two young men showed heart and determination as Bangkokbased Filipino Rockie Bactol emerged victorious over Jadjan Yotiphai via unanimous decision.

On arrival, we asked the marshal if carts were allowed on the course; his response was “they have had no rain”. Game on! Once again the course was in excellent condition, and when you consider that 1,000 baht covers green fee, cart and caddie. The best news is that they are now extending this for the month of October. Great news, we will consider two games again for the month of October. We played two flights, A flight was taken out, with 35 points, by Bill Steinmann with John Davis a few strokes and Mashi Kaneta was hot on John’s heels to take out third position. B flight was a different kettle of fish with all three players returning the same score, positions on the podium were sorted via the count back system. At the end, Keith Buchanan took out first position followed by Patrick Poussier with John Edwards rounding of the placings. Results: A-Flight 1st - Bill Steinmann (12) 35 points 2nd - John Davis (13) 31 points 3rd - MashiKaneta (14) 30 points B-Flight 1st - Keith Buchanan (16) 35 points 2nd - Patrick Poussier (27) 35 points 3rd - John Edwards (16) 35 points All in B-Flight went to the count back system, what a great result!

Bill Steinmann and Keith Buchanan, special guest appearances by Jock & Fred NTP’s: 2 - Jim Groves 6 - Peter Grey 13 - Patrick Poussier 17 - Keith Buchanan Long Putt: 9 - Makita Homma 18 - Glenn Smith On return to The Growling Swan, we welcomed Brendan Devlin, John Edwards and John Davis, two of whom stood on the podium. We then relaxed with a great serve of larb served up by the great girls at the Swan. Of course many beers were consumed, and many stories exaggerated! D-For, the Growling Swan charity hound, collected donations and the players and patrons are thanked for their continued contributions to assist the needy children of Pattaya. For serious golfing with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Bunker Boys Golf Report

Crystal Bay The weather was perfect as we arrived at Crystal Bay to find that the course had suffered a severe storm the previous day and there were puddles in places on the fairways and a number of trees blown over. The Bunkers (which are never the best at Crystal Bay) had suffered but the rest of the course including the greens was in good condition. It was a battle all day for first place between Takeshi Hakozaki and Ross Schiffke with just one point in it all day. Takeshi took the front nine 19 to 18 and Ross the back 20 to 19 (thanks to double bogey by Takeshi on the last) and Ross took first place on count back. Les Cobban with 34 points took third. Results: 1st - Ross Schiffke (20) 38 points cb 2nd - Takeshi Hakozaki (15) 38 points cb 3rd - Les Cobban (8) 34 points Near Pin: Colin Greig, Graeme Henry and Les Cobban

Greenwood After an excellent hassle free run up 331 we arrived to find Greenwood in excellent condition despite the recent heavy rains. Playing A and B courses several players got off to a good start with Neil Carter scoring 21 points closely followed by Colin Grieg and Tony Robbins (finally) with 20 points. Takeshi Hakozaki and Lance Conway Jones who both had disappointing front nines turned it around with 20 points each on the back. However once again it was Colin Greig with a 20 point back nine taking first place with 41 points. Tony Robbins took second with 38 points on count back from Neil Carter. It's the last week for Graeme Henry from Edinburgh here on holidays and sponsoring Colin Greig’s golf. Graeme has had an adventurous holiday and although his golf didn’t meet his expectations with the questionable clubs her borrowed he had the distinction of getting six near pins in seven games. Safe travels Graeme.

Results: 1st - Colin Greig (11) 41 points 2nd - Tony Robbins (16) 38 points cb 3rd - Neil Carter (15) 38 points Near Pin: Colin Greig, Graeme Henry, Lance Comway-Jones and Geoff Parker Eastern Star It’s been wet week in Pattaya and Friday was no exception, waking to dull overcast conditions and light rain. It continued the same as we made our way to Eastern Star and persisted through to the half way mark. After that it brightened and we enjoyed perfect weather for the rest of the round, not too hot and a light breeze. The overnight rain had left a few puddles on the course and in some of the bunkers but overall the course was very well presented with the greens the best we have known for some time. The wet ground gave no run and scores were low . Tony Robbins putting his previous woes behind him took first place with 33 points, Trevor Priestly 31 points took second and Takeshi Hakozaki 30 points beat Colin Greig on count back for third. Eastern Star is certainly worth a visit but it will be difficult in high season as they have elected to move to a two tee start with Tee times available from 6 am to 9 am and midday to 3 pm. This means the popular tee times of 9 am to 11 am are not available. A strange move when experience tells us single tee starts put more golfers through in a day. Results: 1st - Tony Robbins (16) 33 points 2nd - Trevor Priestly (22) 31 points 3rd - Takeshi Hakozaki (15) 30 points cb Near Pin: Gerry Cooney and Colin Greig The Golfer of the Month race is well and truly on with Colin Greig and Les Cobban neck and neck with Neil Carter close behind.

Andre sails through to victory by Derek Brook Royal Lakeside, St After a night of rain it was not looking good for a day on the links up at Royal Lakeside. However, all those who had signed up to play did show up and off we went in rain showers that stayed with us all the way to the course. In fact up near the Amata Industrial Estate the frontage road was flooded and the water level was creeping onto the sides of the main highway. Arriving at the course at the same time as a group of Outbacker’s, the rains slowed to a mere drizzle and by the time our last group was off the first tee, the rain had stopped. Playing ‘Ball-in-Hand’ through the green due to the sodden conditions, we ended up playing most of the round under patches of blue sky. Even with the saturated fairways there were no complaints as the lush fairway grass allowed for decent lies and the greens

ran quick and true. With the ‘Ball-in-Hand’ rule in effect some exceptional scores were expected and the Tropical Golfers did not disappoint. Leading the way with a fine 41 points was Andre Van Dyk (course h’cap 16) followed by a pair of 39 pointers turned in by Tommy Marshall (8) and Dick Warberg (23) to round out the

podium. With several others also beating their handicaps on the day we have to say the golfers won over a lush but sodden track. Well done by all. Near Pins: Dick Warberg, Andre Van Dyk, Bob Britton and Don Carmody And then it was time for burgers, brews and a rehash of the day back at BJ’s Holiday Lodge

When Irish eyes are smiling. Well done J.J. Pattavia CC Golf Course – Stableford Two buses, (and a few cars) left the Growling Swan a little earlier than the scheduled 8:30 am departure time. All golfers keen as Mustard to get to The Plantation Course (Pattavia), it sits high on the list of courses wanted to play at this society! The weather was as good as one could hope for at this time of the year with over cast skies keeping the temperatures cooler than normal, but as the day went on the warmer it became. Rain is always a possibility this time of year, we got through the day with no rain! The course was in great condition as always, fairways had some run and as always the greens played as the green only do at Pattavia. Three putts were not uncommon on the day, and occasionally more putts were required. That’s Pattavia! Two flights were the order of the day, in A flight our resident funny man JJ Harney was on the ball and with a very good score he kept all others at bay. Taking out second was Martin Kempton, with three players returning the same score fighting it out for 3rd spot. Denis Steele took third spot from Ricey and Paul Avery. B-flight saw two golfers come in with the same score, so via the count back system it was Keith Buchanan that took the top spot from Lindsay Slender (coming in 2nd) Then, as in A-flight, we had three golfers return the same score, so again it was to the count back system to decide 3rd spot. Mike Gosden (Happy Birthday Mike) took the honors from Tony Cook and Mikito Homma. Results: A-Flight 1st - J.J. Harney (13) 40 Points 2nd - Martin Kempton (12) 35 Points 3rd - Denis Steele (11) 34 Points B-Flight 1st - Keith Buchanan (16) 34 Points 2nd - Lindsay Slender (23) 34 Points 3rd - Mike Gosden (16) 32 Points

You & Your Pets Are you ready for a furry roommate? If you’re thinking of adopting a pet, pause and consider the implications of such a commitment. A life-long commitment. Do you travel much? Might you eventually relocate outside of Thailand? Must you watch your expenditures to ensure that you live within your budget? If you answered “no” to each of the above questions, then your schedule, plans and finances may allow you to welcome a dog or a cat into your life. But not before giving some thought to several other considerations. What’s the size of your living space? Is there room for a big dog? Two kittens? Does your home have

a yard where your pup can play and relieve himself? Is there a convenient area for a litter box or two and another area for food and water bowls? Then ask yourself whether you want an energetic pet or a couch potato. If you can't provide the exercise an animal needs, consider the latter. Also think about how much time you will be willing or able to devote to your pet. If all of that musing leaves you satisfied that you are ready to adopt, it’s time to consider your family or live-in partner. How do they feel about pets? And will they pitch in to care for the new addition to your household?

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

Finally, be prepared to train your adopted dog or cat, and be aware of the scratching and litter-box habits of cats.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

This lovely 3 coloured girl came to us with 4 babies all of which have now gone to new homes. She has just had her operation so now cannot have any more. She is a very friendly girl who just loves playing and giving cuddles!!

Chalky & Betsy

These 2 small kittens were rescued separately but, as you can see, they are the best of friends now. They are typical kittens and tear around the place for an hour or so before falling fast asleep.

Excessive Drinking Do you think your dog or cat is drinking too much water? Relax. Some pets simply drink a lot of water., particularly larger, more playful breeds that often amuse themselves by drinking water or that need to replenish water loss from being active. Monitor your pet’s normal water consumption and consult your vet if the amount suddenly increases or decreases. Such changes could be indicative of a serious disease.

Are you a turtle?

This lovely Tabby boy is now around 9 weeks old, he has 1 brother and 2 sisters too. They were rescued with their mum from the streets and are now big enough to go to a new home so please be quick to call and reserve one.

Shelley

This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago. She was sick when she was small and so missed the opportunity to be chosen. Her mum, Zero, is here as well, they would make a perfect pair for someone.

You bet your sweet…

Thinking of adding a turtle to your household? Not a bad idea. Turtles and tortoises make fine companions, and they are fun to watch swim around in an aquarium, lazily walk their way across the terrain (e.g., your carpet), or just chill out on a warm rock. No need to rush out to buy a turtle; they have been plodding around the earth for about 60 million years, and they’re not going anywhere any time soon. When you make the decision, consider how big the little guy will be when it’s fully grown in a few years so that you purchase an aquarium that will be a suitable size. A good

Tabbs

guide is about 40 liters (10 gallons) of tank space for each inch of turtle. So, even a very small turtle that maxes out at a few inches is going to require a pretty sizable enclosure. Better to opt for a larger enclosure than to find yourself stuck with one that’s too small.

In Moscow, stray dogs have learned to commute from the suburbs to the city where they scavenge for food, then catch the train back to the suburbs for the evening.

Cat Corner Tip White Cats Are Often Deaf

Dogs like sweets a lot more than cats do. While cats have around only 473 taste buds, dogs have about 1,700 taste buds. Humans have approximately 9,000.

Going to the Dogs... If a dog will not come to you after having looked you in the face, you should go home and examine your conscience.

~Woodrow Wilson

Cats with a white coat are often deaf in one or both ears, especially cats with blue eyes. When only one eye is blue, the cat is likely to be deaf on that side only. Many owners report that deaf cats are not too bright -- but it's not clear if deafness or lower intelligence is to blame.
