Thailand in mourning News of the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, even if not unexpected, has sent a shock wave throughout the country. The 88-year old monarch, who reigned for 70 years, was revered by all classes but had made few public appearances in recent years owing to failing health. Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha announced that crown prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will be the new monarch in accordance with the king’s formal statement about the succession made many years ago. His Majesty’s body will lie in state for 100 days, after which arrangements for the funeral-cremation will begin to be made. It may be a year before the final ceremony is held. In a televised address, General Prayut said that there would be a one year mourning period and that all entertainment functions must be toned down for a month. The crown prince ordered all government ministers to wear mourning clothes for
30 days and said that flags on government buildings and at schools would be flown at half-mast for a month, adding that there should be no public celebrations for the same period. It is not yet clear whether this will lead to the total closure of entertainment venues or whether they will merely restrict their activities. A Pattaya police spokesman said that detailed instructions would be posted after decisions had been made by the Bangkok authorities. King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the world’s longest reigning monarch - a distinction which has now passed to Britain’s Elizabeth - and was viewed by his subjects as a stabilizing influence in a country which witnessed numerous military coups during his reign. Born in the USA in 1927, he ascended to the throne in 1946 at the age of 18, and intervened in Thai politics on a number of sensitive moments. Thus he allowed pro-democracy demonstrators to shelter in the palace precincts, when
they were fired on by troops, a move which led to the collapse of the administration of then-prime minister General Thanom Kittikachorn. In 1981 His Majesty stood up to a group of army officers who were attempting a coup against then-premier General Prem Tinsulanond and, in 1992, his intervention
brought about the fall of former coup leader General Suchinda Kraprayoon. Aside from politics, the King devoted himself to sponsoring an environmentally-friendly subsistence economy as well as being an excellent jazz enthusiast and even an artificial rain maker. Continued on page 6

The suspects had fled by the time police arrived.
German dies near drug store A German man collapsed and died on the road outside a pharmacy in South Pattaya. By the time police arrived, 56-year-old Frank Butter had been dead for several hours. He reportedly had been ignored by bystanders who thought the man was drunk. Witness Kanchana said she finally shook Butter to awaken him, but realized he was dead when he simply slumped to the floor from a bar stool. The body was sent for autopsy; it is suspected that he had lung disease as he was carrying an asthma aspirator as well as some medication.

Sayun Klinaobchey, 49, said that while he and his wife were walking on Naklua Road, the robber man snatched his wife’s gold necklace, then lost control of his bike and fell over. South Pattaya Bar raided
Police and military officers raided an 18+ Zone bar in South Pattaya Road where they found several customers without ID cards and others under the influence of drugs. One man, 25-year-old Peerapat Sirimongkol, was charge with insulting a police officer, two--Suppalert
Morawa, 23, and Surusa Teasakul, 25, were caught taking drugs. The bar managers were arrested and charged with operating without a license, which may result in the venue being closed for five years.
Heavy rains bring chaos
Late-night thunderstorms in the Pattaya area have brought morning traffic to a sudden halt in parts of the city over the past week. Many areas were virtually impassable on the morning of October 12 as rain water failed to drain away before rush hour began. In south Pattaya, the traffic lights junction of Third Road and Soi 17 was jammed with cars and motorbikes as several inches of water and huge pot
holes made driving hazardous. City Hall engineers had done a temporary repair job but the heavy downpours destroyed the shale and stone filling. There also were serious problems on Soi Kao Talo and sections of Sukhumvit Road. Parts of Naklua were submerged for a time as traffic came to a complete standstill. A local authority spokesperson said a combination of poor drainage, pipes clogged
with rubbish and uneven road surfaces were responsible for the problem. He added that extra pumps had been brought in to assist, but they were sometimes unable to reach their destination because high flood waters interfered with the traffic flow. Further rain is expected. The 2016 downpours have been much heavier than in 2015 and Mabprachan Lake in Banglamung is now threequarters full.
Russian on Russian stabbing A restaurant owner was stabbed by her co-investor after an argument about the lack of customers. Zanna Greenberg, 36, suffered a knife attack after she opened a new cafeteria against the wishes of her business partner Olek Mathienov, both carrying Russian passports. Eyewitnesses said the argument centered on which of the two restaurants had the most customers. However, friends noted that the relationship between the two had been sour for some months. Olek was arrested and his partner is now recovering in Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Industry awards silver to Gulf Regatta
Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina won Silver in the category “Best Amateur Sports Event of the Year in Thailand” at the recent Asian Sports Industry Award, beating out strong competition from around the country and a record number of 208 entries across 17 categories. Having been voted ‘Asian Regatta of the Year’ at the 2014 Asian Marine & Boating Awards, noted Scott Finsten, harbour master, Ocean Marina Yacht Club, this second accolade in as many years affirms the organisers’ goal to deliver an international-standard sailing event in the Gulf of Thailand for a diverse range of boats and sailors, and to promote the Gulf of Thailand as a world-class sailing and water sports destination. Based at South East Asia’s largest marina, Ocean Marina, and being the only marina-based regatta in Thailand,
organisers are now looking to 2017 (May 4 to 8 in Pattaya). They will focus efforts on attracting more international and charter entries from around the region, launching targetted marketing campaigns in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. “In the keelboat and multihull classes approximately 50 percent of the fleet are international sailors,” said Dr. Tirachai Pipitsupaphol, managing director of regatta owners and organisers, Ocean Property. “We aim to build on that in the coming years and attract more sailors and boat owners from overseas to come and compete, as well as increase the number of charter entries. A new event website to be launched soon will include charter offerings for international sailors, as well as more dynamic sailing and destination content to appeal to sailors in the region who have not been to this area before.”

News Thailand loves Indian Weddings
National tourist authorities have staged a familiarization campaign for wedding planners and potential marriage partners in India to publicize the attractions and facilities which make Thailand so appealing for honeymooners. A group of 20 wedding planners from several of India’s major cities converged on Bangkok and Thai resorts for the induction which covered wedding events ranging from large-scale receptions to small nuptial rites. Thailand is now the most popular overseas destination for Indian weddings and has been voted best wedding destination by readers of Travel and Leisure, a magazine specializing
in South Asia. Ever y year Thailand hosts more than 200 Indian weddings for groups averaging about 300 who frequently arrive by chartered plane with their own chefs. Each wedding is thought to bring in up to 10 million baht, with Pattaya being a popular choice. Other beach resorts, including Phuket and Hua Hin, share in this expanding niche market whilst some groups prefer Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Indian weddings are promoted by the Thai government as an important element in the MICE programme to develop business and conference shortcourses to complement the tourist sector.
Temple expansion planned
Surat Mekavarakul, CEO Mike Group, announced that a new temple hall will be built at Wat Boonkanchanaraml. Surat will lead in the building of the 20 million-baht, two-storey hall with a donation of 500,000 baht. Completion is planned in 18 months. Volunteers and financial contributions are encouraged to assist with the project.
Aem detergent launch party
Singer Apatsara Maboontham cut the ribbon to open her new business venture, Aem detergent soap. The eco-friendly product has been on the Thai market for three months and is reportedly receiving good feedback from consumers. Now, there are distribution offices in Pattaya, Bangkok, Prathumtani, Nakornpathom, Samutprakarn, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Udornthani, Khonkaen and Chiang Mai.
Clinton leads among expats
Hillary Clinton is the choice of most American expats in the US presidential election. Although election day is November 8, absentee and postal ballots have already been cast by several million voters. Pattaya Today spoke to 20 American residents of whom 16 had cast their ballot in favour of Clinton. Of the remaining four, two intended to vote for independent candidates and two were still undecided. “It’s just out of the question to have a demagogue and ignoramus running the country,” said Dan Eastham, who has lived in Pattaya for five years. “Donald Trump is blatantly racist and sexist, while he keeps changing position on issues of the day. I even doubt whether he is a Republican at all.” Other US expats noted the audio tape of Trump’s comments about female genitalia which came as an election bombshell on October 7. The tape, dating back to 2005, recorded Trump’s private
remarks when he accidentally left open his microphone during a coach ride. Commentators say that it will now be virtually impossible for Trump to win the national election since Clinton leads in public opinion polls, including swing states such as Florida and South Carolina, and because he is virtually at war with senior Republicans in his own party who refuse to back him or are offering only tepid support. Trump’s strategy appears to be running a “sewer” campaign, attacking the reputations of opponents wherever he finds him, in the hope that the electorate as a whole will become disillusioned with politicians and not turn up at the polling stations on November 8. In that scenario, Trump hopes that his own hard-core support base will swing the election in his favour. However, the strategy could backfire as huge numbers of electors, especially racial minorities favourable to Clinton, are reported to be registering.
Soldiers beset Beach Road vendors
Thai soldiers of the 21st Infantry joined city officials to crack down on Beach Road vendors. The contingent patrolled footpaths and sidewalks to ensure they were clear of clutter and commercial enterprises. The military-backed patrols are the latest attempt to stop hawkers and unregistered dealers that have produced problems both off and on the venue, including traffic chaos
and litter. There was little opposition to the initial patrol, although vendors near the Royal Garden Plaza claimed to be on private property, and they questioned that the delegation ignored the enormous number of motorbikes crowding the walkways and roads. City legal chief Sretapol Boonsawat said that future patrols will target other bottlenecks including Second Road and parts of Thepprasit Road.

Angry elephant lashes out
A Nong Nooch worker was injured when a rampaging elephant tried to kill her own calf after suffering intense pain during the birth. The employee, 16-year-old Spai, said he noticed that blood was oozing from the frenzied mother and he rushed in and pulled the baby to safety. The Garden authorities said later that mother and calf were both healthy and will be separated for a while to ensure no family violence.

News Thailand in mourning Continued from page 1 Although news of the royal death initially hit the Thai stock market, it is expected that the downward pressure will soon be halted as the government acted promptly to dissuade any notions of political uncertainty. Market analysts say that recent events had already been built into prices and that losses will be limited. The Thai Central Bank is said to be ready
to step in and smooth any knee-jerk currency disorder. It is not yet clear how His Majesty’s death will affect, if at all, the date of the next general election provisionally slated for early 2017. When the King’s death was officially announced, many hundreds of people were gathered outside the hospital along the scenic Chao Phraya river. Social media users in the kingdom changed their profile pictures
to a template image that had the message “Love the King” with their names inscribed on it. The image featured a yellow heart on a pink background. One tweeted, “The end of King Bhumibol’s reign is the end of an era for Thailand, but it is also the start of a new one.” The world’s media have reported extensively on the royal death and tributes and obituaries dominated internet news for the first 48 hours.

TAT launches “A Touch of Thai Vehicles” project with new creative travel experience
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) launched eight creative travel experiences in four provinces using local vehicles at the TAT head office. This includes the Tuk Tuk in Bangkok, Ruea Hua Tong (long-tail boat) in Krabi, Horse-drawn Carriage in Lampang and Skylab (motor-tricycle) in Loei to show visitors the charms of Thainess. “A T o u c h o f T h a i Vehicles” project will create innovative travel routes using local rides and at the same time uplift the service quality and good image of local vehicles across Thailand. Under the “Discover Thainess” campaign, Thailand’s local vehicles will be a vital add up to other Thainess experiences. TAT has constantly promoted “Local Experience” in Thailand, letting visitors from around the world get an authentic touch of Thainess. Therefore, the development of travel routes using local vehicles will provide real excitement and a distinct perspective for visitors. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT governor, said, “Travelling by local vehicles will open up a new perspective of discovering Thainess. Many times, travellers especially foreign tourists who travel on their
own, or foreign independent travellers know very well that they have to try a tuk tuk in Bangkok or horse-drawn carriage in Lampang. The question is how can they take these vehicles while having other local and communitybased experiences at the same time”? The event also sees the participation of Aniporn “Nat” Chalermburanawong, Miss Universe Thailand 2015 and the winner of the Best Costume Award with her extraordinary dress “Tuk Tuk Thailand” at the Miss Universe 2015 beauty contest, and Ray Macdonald, Thai actor and TV host, who runs the show “TT RIDER”, a travel programme using a tuk tuk to travel across Thailand. Yuthasak said, “Our eight new creative routes that will be operated by local vehicles in four provinces are very practical and hands-on, and can be pursued by any traveller. In Lampang, not only will you take a chill ride around the city, your journey will let you learn about Lampang back in the time of three ancient eras. We are promoting a night tour of Bangkok and our Magnificent Lights of Old Town Bangkok route that will allow visitors to experience Bangkok in a new way. A tour by Ruea Hua
Tong, Krabi’s iconic longtail boat, will bring to you cruise along Khlong Marui in Ao Luk district to find tranquility and serenity like you find in Guilin or Halong Bay. Even in Krabi city, you can experience the unseen mangrove tunnel, which is unique and astonishing. “Our routes will cater to people who love to travel by themselves. For example in Chiang Khan, it would be difficult for travellers without a car. On our route, travellers can take a Skylab to travel around Chiang Khan including visiting Ban Na Pa Nat to learn about Tai Dam culture. These local vehicle routes will provide opportunities for visitors to connect with the locals and hence support local communities.” A Touch of Thai Vehicles project provides new experiences for visitors, especially FITs, including family, lady, and baby boomers groups. These high-quality groups of travellers will be able to experience Thainess through the rides on local vehicles. “A Touch of Thai Vehicles” book and mobile applications will be available, both on iOS and Android for all visitors. Our Community There’s more to Father Ray than you think! by Derek Franklin
Think of the Father Ray Foundation and you may be reminded of the articles that regularly appear in the local media. Stories of happy children enjoying a birthday party, young adults with disabilities winning medals at sporting events or the blind children celebrating Teacher’s Day. But there is a project at the Father Ray Foundation that, while many do not know about it, has changed not just the lives of many living with a disability, it has also changed Thai society. The Redemptorist Foundation for People with Disabilities, or RF as it is known, was founded in 2000 with the aim of promoting the abilities of people with disabilities and fighting for equal rights, no matter the ability of the person. Remember a few years back when the Supreme Court announced that every Skytrain station in Bangkok must have an elevator installed? It was the RF who took the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to court. It was the students from the vocational school here in Pattaya who traveled up to the offices of BMA in the capital, and climbed out of their wheelchairs and dragged themselves up the steps to protest, all in view of the national and international
media. And it was the RF who pressured the BMA to treat all its passengers as equals. The law states that every company employing 100 staff must employ at least one person with a disability, or pay a fine. It was the staff at RF who, together with leaders of disability organisations in Bangkok, pressured the government to bring this into law. The Job Placement Agency for People with Disabilities not only finds employment for students graduating from the vocational school, it will help anyone who is disabled and needs to find work. The RF invited well known companies to rent space to open call centers and employ people with disabilities. So the next time you call Powerbuy, AIS Telecommunications or AXA Life Insurance, the person who answers it will most probably be sitting in a wheelchair here in Pattaya. When Powerbuy opened a branch in Pattaya Klang it also opened a repair shop, and all the workers are living with a disability. RF also set up a nationwide call center to offer advice to people with disabilities. Call 1479, Monday to Friday, 8am8pm, and someone with a
disability will be able to offer help, no matter how near or how far away. The number 1479 comes from the number of kilometers 25 students from the vocational school wheeled themselves in 2011 from Pattaya to Bangkok and then up to Nong Khai all to raise awareness of the abilities of people with disabilities. Almost every week there are seminars and conferences taking place here in Pattaya, all organised by RF, which are advising, supporting and empowering people with disabilities. They come from all over Thailand, from the far north to the deep south. The RF also hosts visitors from neighbouring ASEAN countries, who arrive to gain new knowledge, taking that knowledge back home to Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and changing the lives of people in those countries. RF has also fought for access on public transport. Today, and every day, there are trains with carriages adapted for people with a disability leaving Bangkok for the north east, the north and the south of the country, thanks to the pressure of the people working at RF. Most piers along the Chao
Praya River, and also on the canals of Bangkok now have easy access for people with disabilities; guess who put pressure on the powers that be in the capital? For more than a decade the RF has been asking for a bridge to be built over Sukhumvit Road here in Pattaya. A bridge that will have an elevator on both sides, with easy access for people with disabilities. Representatives from successive local and national governments have visited the site and promised the bridge will be built, all in front of the national media. In September RF received a message that all plans to construct a bridge across Sukhumvit Road with access for people with disabilities have been cancelled; it will not be built now or in the future. It is doubtful the RF will just accept this decision and keep quiet. Watch this space.

Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotels, said, “The property is currently undergoing a refurbishment of all its guest rooms and when complete will make a superb addition to AVANI’s growing portfolio of hotels and resorts.” All of the resort’s 298 guest rooms and suites have balconies or terraces and are set amidst 14 acres of verdant gardens overlooking Pattaya
beach. Five restaurant and bar venues feature a variety of international and local Thai cuisine. The resort focuses on healthy lifestyle choices offering a swimming pool with Jacuzzi, an extensive health club, two floodlit tennis courts and a spa. Located in the centre of Pattaya and overlooking the beach, the property is only minutes away from the city’s hotspots and shopping areas and only a 90-minute drive from Bangkok International Airport. AVANI Pattaya will become the fourth AVANI property in Thailand, following AVANI Riverside Bangkok and AVANI Khon Kaen which were both added to the brand earlier this year and AVANI Atrium Bangkok which joined the portfolio in 2014.

InterContinental Bangkok Bouchon Wine Dinner at Fireplace Grill and Bar J Bouchon Chilean Vin de Famille and Chef Sebastian Reischer's 6-course menu by John K. Lindgren
With nearly half a century history, the Fireplace Grill and Bar is a venerable culinary institution in the middle of Bangkok CBD, only a five-minute descent from the Ploenchit Skytrain platform. The elegant restaurant foyer is opposite InterContinental Bangkok hotel's main entrance. Valet parking is provided. First is the setting. A warm and welcoming ambiance. Decor is contemporary with marble floors, wood panels and polished steel in the central cooking station with a large charcoal grill. Seventy-twoseat capacity and two private rooms are available for those who want to enjoy a more discrete dining experience. At the pre-dinner cocktail we meet the affable Pablo Montero representing the Chilean Bouchon Family Wines. The family's winemaking story began in 1887 when Monsieur Emile Bouchon left his native Saint Emilion, Bordeaux and settled in Chile, Maule wine growing region 300 km south from Santiago. It's seven in the evening. All guests have arrived. Comfortable seated in high back leather chairs as the first dish, a four hors d’oeuvre creation arrives: Tuna in Japanese vinegar pickled cucumber. Duck croquette on black tea fruit chutney. Green asparagus truffle cigars, banana bread. Foie gras, pomegranate. This is more than an appetizer! This is gastronomic extravaganza! The truffle, the tuna and the foie gras. OMG! Paired with a classic J Sauvignon Blanc ('soovee-joo blan') Reserva. Christian Sepulveda, Bouchon winemaker's sauvignon blanc served perfectly chilled is fresh and crisp with concentrated gooseberry mango, passion fruit and a pleasant aromatic aftertaste on the palate. Tasmanian Atlantic salmon is good for you. Besides being low in calories and cholesterol, and high in protein, oily fish such as salmon are a particularly rich source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are vital for healthy hearts and minds. Our Tassie Salmon served with pickled veggies, horseradish (with a kick), strawberry and anchovy milk paired harmoniously with another J Bouchon's Reserva Chardonnay giving those ripe banana and pineapple aromas and sweet honey notes. The guests are impressed by the impeccable service and at the central open kitchen Chef Reichert's
brigade prepares the next presentation; Tiger prawn commonly known as the giant tiger prawn or Asian tiger shrimp, a delicious marine crustacean prepared a la Fireplace Grill style with slow-cooked egg, black summer truffle, green pea and Parma ham. In the wine glasses J Bouchon Rose bubbly, delicate and elegant in salmon color. This chilled pink stuff made of 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 percent Pais grape, an indigenous Chilean grape that arrived with Spanish conquistadores. On the nose white fruit and herbal aromas. Asian tiger prawn and Chilean rosé. Thumbs up! Before shifting up the gears to the carnivore part of the dinner Senor Pablo Montero shares his knowledge of each wine’s characteristics and J Bouchon Family Wine History. Some say lamb shoulder is less glorified than rib chops or legs. I say lamb shoulder is explosively delicious and juicy. I'd like to make this one of InterContinental Bangkok Fireplace Grill and Bar signature dishes. On the plate with perfectly prepared potato, onion and leek ash. The meat is tender and succulent and accordingly paired with a full-bodied (13.5 percent) red wine: J Bouchon Carmenere Reserva Especial. Brilliant, dark red displaying violet hues. It has ripened red fruit aromas with a hint of herbal notes, green pepper, and soft dark chocolate on the palate. Fruity and pleasant in mouth with a good structure and balance. Australian lamb and Chilean Carmenere. All you shiraz (syrah) lovers – try a Chilean J Bouchon Carmenere next time. The final main course. Gastronomical fireworks, again! Butter Poached Hereford Fillet: Braised beef cheek, chorizo crumble and chanterelle mushroom. Hereford beef. A classic prime fillet with the pork chorizo adding a nice kick to the ensemble. The wine a big 'Cab' or J Bouchon Block Series Cabernet Sauvignon. The Block Series is all about terroir. “We work our vines
lovingly, harvesting small batches no larger than 8,000 kilos per hectare in order to maintain a higher concentration of color and structure,” comments Pablo Montero, export manager – Asia. The last course is a luscious indulgence. White chocolate mousse. Caramel ice cream, black currant sauce. I like mousse (styling foam) in my hair or but on my palate chocolate mousse ice cream and black currant sauce. Wow! The colors, textures, a veritable symphony of flavors. With the white chocolate mousse I take gourmet coffee and glass of sparking mineral water. A superb Bouchon Wine Dinner. Chapeau to Chef de Cuisine Sebastian Reischer, his kitchen team, the impeccable restaurant service. InterContinental Bangkok's Fireplace Grill and Bar since 1966 – still going strong. “La grande cuisine must not wait for the guest; it's the guest who must wait for la grande cuisine.” – Auguste Escoffier

Mandarin Oriental's Le Normandie deluxe French cuisine culture Dejeuner au Normandie by Chef de Cuisine Arnaud Dunand Sauthier by John K. Lindgren
If I had someone very special coming to Bangkok for the first time, luncheon at Le Normandie would be my choice. Only Le Normandie. The high-end restaurant business or any eating house and cafe start-up venture in Bangkok is a challenging adventure, "here today, gone tomorrow” as they say. But the Le Normandie has stood the test of time ever since it opened in 1958. Then the restaurant was known as Le Normandy Grill, magnificently located on the top-floor of Tower Wing. Today it is called Garden Wing of The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok. Back in the day it was one of the Kingdom's tallest buildings. An iconic cream-colored landmark on the banks of the old Chao Phraya river. In 2015 Le Normandie underwent a rejuvenation with a contemporary interpretation of its original grandeur. The new interior preserves the classic elegance of one of Asia’s best loved French restaurants, together with striking new features such as handcrafted chandeliers. Also new wine cellar featuring top selections of both Old and New World wines and a customised dessert trolley. Our Normandie experience starts with the elevator ride up to the restaurant. As we step out from the car a stunning river vista greets us through the floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows and the resplendent dining room. OMG! As my daughter would say. The restaurant layout is a rectangular space with a clever ceiling design boasting those opulent chandeliers. Dozen of impeccably decked out tables and elegant, upholstered chairs in golden yellow hue like the ceiling. Large, fresh multicolor flower bouquets on heavy pedestals. Chopin or maybe Debussy piano music from the concealed loudspeakers – no singing. Then the champagne arrives. Louis de Roederer Brut Premier perfectly chilled, fine bubbles. What a companion to the amuse-bouche, the complimentary, trio of bite-sized manhattan, lobster, zucchini, basil compilation. On the side the freshly baked bread assortment. My favorite rye roll, broetchen small, multi-grain rolls sprinkled with rock salt and the delicious seaweed butter by Le Beurre Bordier, La Maison du Beurre creamery founded in 1927. What a bread and butter combo! This is just the beginning of the Le Normandie set lunch. Comprising of appetiser, fish or meat and dessert. Down below on the Chao Phraya River heavily loaded barges move slowly downstream and smaller riverside hotel shuttle boats flying their flags as they busily ply between Bangkok and the opposite Thonburi side. The appetizer arrives: Red tuna with almonds and two kinds of melon served en bloc. Exquisitely presented. Fresh, layered and so delectably paired with a Sancerre 2014 La Croix au Garde. A classic French sauvignon
Thon rouge melon pasteque amande
blanc from Maison Domaine Pellé, an aromatic wine with citrus, floral and mineral notes. The next pairing with the palatable blue fin tuna is a glass of Domaine du Pavillon Mersault 100 percent French, Bourgogne chardonnay sans oak. The third degustation is a PulignyMontrachet 2011 with the unusual name: “Mischief and Mayhem”. Pale gold in color, tinged with green. On the palate the M&M is full and rich, yet with a beautifully defined acidic structure. A wine to sip slowly with another piece of savory bread and of course, the melt-in-your-mouth seaweed butter. I glance around the restaurant. To our left three young couples, maybe Chinese or Taiwanese. I can hear Mandarin or Cantonese spoken. At the round table a Sino-Thai family of six, grandmother and grandfather included. By the large window three Thai lady executives enjoying the food and wine pairing and taking pictures, selfies to be posted on Facebook. Fine French dining is also about details. Le Normandie's attention to detail is mind-blowing. The tablecloth is Garnier-Thiébaut Vosges, France. Est 1830. The Rolls-Royce of tablecloths and napkins. This famous linens maker supplies the greatest restaurants and prestigious hotels in France and worldwide. My napkin is smooth and textured. None of that slinky, nylon napkin feel so often encountered in different restaurants. The tableware from Bernardaud, the prestigious French manufacturer of Limoges porcelain. This collection is specially made for Le Normandie. The forks and knives by Christople cutlery. Again, nothing but the best. “Nec Plus Ultra”. Now, our main course Lozère milk fed lamb potato black garlic eggplant is served. But first a glass of Perrier sparkling water to cleanse the palate. Then the succulent lamb, potato puree and roasted black garlic eggplant accompanied by lamb gravy
International food and Thai Cuisine Jomtien Bead Road Corner of Soi 8 Chef de Cuisine Arnaud Dunand Sauthier
porcini mushroom concoction. I am not a big pork fan nor a chicken aficionado – but I love the Lozère milk fed lamb. This is five-star gourmet lamb with potato puree and black garlic eggplant. Toothsome and with the perfect wine: the Daumen Gigondas by Jean-Paul Daumen, an exceptional Cotes du Rhone “CdR” melange of 60 percent Grenache, 30 percent Syrah, 10 percent Mourvedre/ Cinsault. Balanced, medium body with elegant fruit. Recommended by Le Normandie's affable master sommelier Khun Sunthorn. The main course the piece de resistance by Normandie's Chef de Cuisine Arnaud Dunand Sauthier who is at the helm of the Le Normandie kitchen brigade since 2012. His track record is impressive. Working and learning under superstar chefs like: Marc Veyrat, Georges Blanc, Jacques Lameloise and Guy Martin. Classical French gastronomy, par excellence. Our luncheon ends on a sweet note. From the patisserie/dessert trolley. A scrumptious cake collection. Once in a blue moon. I turn into a cake monster. Chocolate and vanilla. Yummy! The wine: The Chateau Le Thibaut Monbazillac 2009. Golden amber in the glass. Full-bodied and creamy on the palate. Long finish of honey, lychee, and lingering tropical fruit. One of my big favourites like classic the sweet Sauternes. The French they do know their patisserie (pastry) and their dessert wines. Oui, monsieur... It's been a luncheon to remember, to cherish. Chapeau! Chef Arnaud Dunand Sauthier, his kitchen team and the impeccable service. Le Normandie. Pricey? Not as expensive as you might think. The lunchtime set menu starts at 1,450 baht ++, after all Bangkok’s most prestigious French restaurant is not only for the ultra high-net-worth individuals (UHNWI). Plus there's no extra fee for the spectacular river vista. Dusit Thani Pattaya presents its seasonal Octoberfest Saturday Night Buffet Grab a Beer, Pretzel and Wurst – It’s Octoberfest Again! Dusit Thani Pattaya occupies an enviable position at the southern tip of the bay overlooking the sea and golden sands of Pattaya. The location for their seasonal Octoberfest Saturday Night Buffet is sited in their stunning beachside restaurant aptly named The Bay. This deluxe buffet is B.900++ with free-flow beer at B.590++ and no ordinary beer this, it’s a draft Octoberfest bier specially flown in from the world-famous Paulaner brewery at Munich’s Nockherberg. The location overlooks the ocean and contributes hugely to the “feel good” vibrations that surround you when at this five-star resort. The world’s biggest beer festival kicked off on 17 September 1810 when the Lord Mayor of Munich cracked open the first keg of beer and declared the Octoberfest officially open. Since then it has reverberated around the world with many kegs of beer being sunk and is now probably the most popular international festival of the year. Pattaya loves a party and is always ready to embrace any fun and frolics associated with its enjoyment. Dusit Thani Pattaya is doing just that,
and for every Saturday in October from 6:30 to 10 pm an extra special event will be encouraging participation in beer contests, beer pong (a drinking game in which participants attempt to throw ping-pong balls into jugs of beer and their opponents are required to drink the contents of the jug) all to the merriment of foot tapping traditional German music. This BBQ is a joy to behold with the appetiser tables alone presenting a myriad of items to start your Octoberfest. Seafood and terrines nestle next to hams, pate maison, cold meats and Thai spicy salads and much, much more. So many salads of every imaginable combination with masses of dressings and tasty sauces. The seafood counter was a sight with a myriad of coral crustaceans fresh and shining all waiting on their icy
carpets to be thrown on the grill. We decided to start the proceedings with an enlivening bloody Mary shot with grilled tiger prawns followed by marinated asparagus with truffle vinaigrette and egg and a selection of salamis – our perfect appetiser which faultlessly kicked off the proceedings. Moving on to the main courses, the carvery features, amongst others, roast sirloin of beef and roast potatoes, or roast pork with sage and onion stuffing, giblet gravy and all the trimmings. Other western gourmet classics include envelopes of pork cordon bleu with porcini mushroom sauce, shrimp Creole, veal saltimbocca or sautéed king scallops cooked and served to order. Mick and I chose pan-seared fish with a
scrumptious sauce (delectable) plus the miniature Maryland crab cakes. As you would expect, the fruit and dessert tables were a veritable cornucopia of extravagance. Blueberry cheesecake with Kirsch snuggled next to chocolate mousse, peach and apple tarts, lemon meringue, bread and butter pudding and if they didn’t tempt, a chef was on hand to flambé a crepe suzette. Then there is the decadently tempting chocolate fountain. Here a medley of fresh berries and tropical fruits, marshmallows and home cookies circle the fountain for delicious dipping into the molten chocolate. Mick and I had a wonderful evening. We sat and gazed out to sea and ate gourmet treats from all
points of the globe with particular interest on the German speciality sausages and accompanying dishes. The Octoberfest games were great fun especially the beer pong which quickly became everyone’s favourite. The setting is stunning, the ambiance stress-free, the food sumptuous and the choices lavish. It’s a true treat. Octoberfest runs every Saturday throughout the month of October from 6:30 till 10 pm at The Bay Restaurant and is priced at B.900++ with free-flow beer at B.590++. THE CURRY HUT
You’ll come for the prices and come back for the food! It’s no secret that Brits love Indian food. At the start of the Second World War there were only six curry houses in Britain. However, the arrival of Indians after the war, to help to rebuild London, fed the nascent growth with migrant workers establishing cafes and canteens to feed their families. Soon after curious Brits began discovering the spicy food and how delicious it was compared to their own bland, rationed cooking. By 1982 there were 3,500 curry restaurants in Britain, today there are 12,000 with London having more Indian restaurants than Mumbai or Delhi. This phenomenal growth has spread worldwide and no more so than our own Pattaya. Mick and I are long stayers here and back when we arrived 15 years ago there was only one Indian restaurant. Now of course they have sprouted all over the city with new establishments appearing weekly. One on our list is a small family run curry shop tucked away in the hinterland of Rompho market (Jomtien Second Road) it delivers traditional Indian flavours at very affordable prices. Owned by Chef Shahid, a professionally trained Pakistani gentlemen who turns out exactly the staple Indian food you want to eat. The setting is familystyle with clean, neat tables, fans and a small forecourt making it just the spot for a family meal or a friendly catch-up with friends. If you want a meal that satiates your tummy, tickles your taste buds try the Punjabi food at The Curry Hut. The standout attribute at this restaurant is that Shahid takes great pride in his dishes and will happily tell you his ingredients and basis for his dishes. We have spent lots of time chatting to him about our trips to India and the regional dishes we have enjoyed. We always kick off with samosas, either vegetable, chicken or mutton (from B.140). Prawn or vegetable pakoras also make for good finger food nibbles before moving on to more main dishes. The mutton seekh kebabs have been cooked in
Shahid’s authentic tandoor oven and hit the table sizzling and burnished with spicy flavours. Wine is not to everyone’s taste to quaff with curries but it is available and at only B.120 for a humungous glass. Otherwise imported and local beers are readily available. Breads are a particular interest with a dozen or so varieties from spiced nans to parathas, chapattis and Tandoori rotis making the ideal accompaniments to the Tandoori fish, chicken or prawns (from B.220). The chicken is a house special and on our last visit this was our chosen item. It was cooked so well after it’s overnight marination in masalas, yoghurt, spices and lemon juice resulting in a tender joint with hidden depths – we loved it. Over a dozen vegetable curries (from B.150) either complement the main courses or stand in their own right. Fried dahl (B.140) is always a favourite. Served in its creamy, spicy and comforting gravy it’s always a winner. Aloo gobi is another ageless favourite combining the best creamy veggies with a light spicing and subtle flavour. Shahid gained his spurs specializing in curry sauces and there’s a dozen examples to choose from. Chicken Tikka Masala has its loyal fans while the Vindaloo is how we remember it from back home, Butter Chicken and Madras are another two standout al pan, dishes. I would hazard that we all started out our curry journey with Chicken Korma which here is as expected a mild, gentle boneless chicken cooked in yoghurt and light spicing. The lamb section offers Mutton done eight ways including a tomato infused Rogan Josh (B.220) or a Vindaloo with mashed spinach. Seafood comes in an array of dishes from only B.200 including Prawn Chilli Masala, Prawn Karahi cooked with spices and tomatoes in a special pan and more. All are great partnered with one of the kitchen’s rice specialities, jeera, peas, mushroom pullaos with special saffron, and four diverse biryanis featuring chicken, mutton, prawn or fish.

No fancy prices here, just good, solid food to put a smile on your face and an even bigger one on your wallet. So next time you say, “let’s go out for a ruby”, why not give Shahid’s kitchen a try. The Arts of Thailand by Rory Coughlan
Krabi Krabong Thai weapons system. Not just the study of Thai weapons but the Way of the Warrior, an understanding of the art of combat, tactics and technique. Krabi Krabong teaches the student how each weapon is effective and how this can be extended to their body’s natural weapons using the same principles. Traditional beliefs are that the student does not choose the weapon, the weapon chooses you. Muay Boran/Muay Kaacheurk "Ancient boxing" or originally "Toi Muay" is a term for the unarmed martial arts of Thailand prior to the introduction of modern equipment and rules in the 1930s. This was the original form of Muay Thai which includes locks and throws and many techniques which are considered too dangerous for the modern sport of Muay Thai (Thai Boxing). Muay Boran classes are completely structured towards the self-defence aspect of the tradition art of Thailand. Muay Thai The most famous and most popular of the martial arts of Thailand. At The White Lotus Muaythai Gym we don’t teach just for competition, we teach the ART of Thai Boxing with correct movement and footwork – the Yang Sarm Khum, and breathing techniques which are an essential aspect of maximising the techniques’
effectiveness. Most students train in Muay Thai to improve their fitness or for self-defence purposes but for those who wish to test their skills in the ring. The Thai Martial Arts developed over 600 years, is tried and tested, not only in the Muay Thai ring but also on the battlefield thus the three aspects Muay Thai, Muay Boran/Muay Kaacheurk and Krabi Krabong combined are AWUDT BORAN THE ULTIMATE MARTIAL ART. So always remember when choosing a school and teacher for your studies of the arts, true linage always goes along way.

All-New Cool 5-Seat Sport SUV
The value-for-money 2.0L petrol-turbo AWD As we all wait for the affordable, eco-friendly reliable plug-in electric vehicles, the compact SUVs and crossovers are the fastest growing automobile segment in the world and everybody wants to jump on the bandwagon. The new kid on the block in Thailand is MG's nouvelle SUV launched by MG Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd., trading company affiliated with China's SAIC Motor Corporation Limited and Thai CP Group. Three models have already been launched since 2014. The compact hatchback MG3, the family saloons MG5 and MG6. All assembled in Rayong, Thailand. Look around and you'll see more and more MG's on the Thai roads including the latest MG GS SUV, which is this issue’s Pattaya Today
Automotive test drive. Design: Cool, compact SUV looks with rounded corners, raked pillars, and a high beltline giving the MG GS a distinctive, sporty styling and youthful appearance. Key design elements include the crosshatch grill featuring the iconic, oversized octagonal MG (Morris Garages) badge, a sturdy twotone front bumper, and trapezoidal projection-type xenon headlights. The rear boasts sturdy appearance with high mounted LED combination taillights. The big 'diamond-cut' 18-inch double-color aluminum alloys add premium SUV looks. Interior: The interior and dashboard with glossy piano black accents feel robust. There's leather upholstery with
electrically adjustable sport seats for both driver and front passenger, another luxury SUV feature. Back seat space for three adults with ample head and leg room. The boot (trunk) swallows 483 liters of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,336 liters with the backs folded providing a flat floor. Perfect carrying home IKEA ready-to-assemble furniture (RTA) or a new Fisher & Paykel refrigerator. In the MG GS ceiling a one-touch sunroof. Moore goodies: rear parking sensors and reverse camera. For infotainment an eight-inch touchscreen on the floating center console incorporating the ‘inkaNet’ infotainment system, with GPS navigation and Bluetooth connectivity – the works.
Engine: The MG in-house developed turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol motor delivers a classcompetitive 218 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission: automatic 6-speed transmission with F1-inspired paddle shifters on the steering column. Also worth to mention is user-friendly one-touch cruise control. At petrol pump you can choose from petrol, (gasoline), gasohol 91 and 95 including E20 and E85. No worries! Drive: For safe motoring the driving position is important. The MG GS steering wheel adjusts for rake and reach (rake adjustment means up and down, reach means in and out). Again, a great feature. “Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway Lookin' for adventure And whatever comes our way...” We hit the highway/expressway and step on it. The turbo kicks in. The lofty cockpit view makes overtaking, switching lanes a piece of cake. I like the firm suspension. The body roll is in check, always an issue with SUVs due to their high center of gravity. Highway No 2 (Thanon Mitraparp) from Saraburi direction Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) past Saraburi town and the industrial estates. As we climb up to the Korat plateau it's good to have a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor under the hood (bonnet) with plenty of power on tap. Later in Pak Chong on a local road, a shortcut to Khao Yai we encounter winding, wet dirt roads with large, deep potholes. Here the AWD provides
excellent grip and traction. As the night falls we arrive at the swank Toscana Valley, Khao Yai landmarked at the entrance by a massive replica Leaning Tower of Pisa. Mamma Mia! This prestigious Italian-style residential community includes Toscana Valley Country Club and Hotel La Casetta amidst acres of rolling hills, lakes, vibrant silky oaks and junipers. On the way back to Bangkok. Time to engage the sport mode “S”, immediately the instrument dials turn bright red. Signaling it's time for proactive driving. Engage the paddle shifters! Verdict: I'll be frank with you even though my name is not Frank. A Chinese SUV by MG? After a weekend I came away with surprised admiration. This is a really solid, value for money, sport and family SUV. The base model MG GS two-wheel drive version goes for 1.21 million baht, while the fourwheel drive (AWD) is priced at 1.31 million baht including added features like sunroof, reversing camera, paddle shifters and electrically adjustable front seats, inkaNet connectivity and all-wheel drive. That's a lot! MG GS 2.0T X AWD Engine: 4-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol turbo Power: 218 hp Torque: 350 Nm Transmission: 6-speed automatic AWD Top speed: 200 km/h Fuel consumption: 13 km/liter Price: 1.31 million baht www.mgcars.com

will be the key to Thai developers’ success in the future. Next was an insightful talk by Andrew Gulbrandson, who pointed out that great opportunities were to be found in revitalizing existing properties during this period where there are fewer project launches. The first panel session of the day was moderated by Marciano BridgeMoHun in which we all realized even further how much technology really does shape our real estate industry. At our second panel session, moderated by Charles Blocker, panelists made the key point that there was overall confidence in the present and future hotel market in Thailand. Following morning talks by two well-received keynote speakers, our first presentation after lunch was special guest speaker Thomas Leeser, who travelled all the way from New York City to make what was a truly game-changing experience. Internationally renowned for his iconic architectural designs at all scales, Leeser has been a principal for more than 25 years at Leeser Architecture, New York. NEW PERSONAL INCOME TAX STRUCTURE
Personal Income Tax (PIT) is a direct tax levied on income of a person. A person means an individual, an ordinary partnership, a non-juristic body of persons and an undivided estate. In general, a person liable to PIT has to compute his tax liability, file a tax return and pay tax, if any, accordingly on a calendar year basis. Thailand’s Industrial Zone Si Racha heats up by Bill Barnett
Talking to many hoteliers outside of Thailand and when speaking about Si Racha, they start immediately thinking about the red hot chili sauce Sriracha. Over the past few years the area which is a center of industrial activity on the Eastern Seaboard has flown under the radar of international hotel brands. Today, incoming branded offerings by Accor’s Novotel, Ascott’s Somerset and Centara along with a Movenpick that is in the works are creating a major shift into the market. C9 Hotelworks has released a new report titled Si Racha Serviced Apartment Market Update 2016 that includes coverage of the area’s hotels as well Si Racha is Thailand’s second largest industrial zone by scale, with over 65,000 work permits issued and the second largest Japanese community outside of Bangkok in the country. Currently the hotel and
serviced apartment market stands at slightly more than 3,500 units while strong investment sentiment has bolstered the pipeline with 2,239 new keys expected to enter the market by 2018. According to C9 Hotelworks research on the serviced apartment sector there is a forecast for yet more branded properties to enter the supply pipeline within this year. While short term the market is expected to be influenced by changes in the supply demand scenario, longer-term the planned high-speed Eastern Seaboard train project could be a major game changer to the area. Meanwhile hotels and serviced apartments are going to have to look for more diverse segmentation and an impact from new condo product is also expected to hit the core long-stay rental segment. Bill Barnett is the managing director of C9 Hotelworks Company Limited.

Thailand and Malaysia car tire sales strengthened The replacement car tire marketplace in four developing Southeast Asian countries has been attracting new entrants in the past two years, especially at the back of falling raw material prices. Since the beginning of 2015, 22 new brands have jumped onto the bandwagon in the key cities in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia—the four key markets where Gfk conducts Point of Sales tracking for car tires in ASEAN. The intensifying competition in the marketplace has consequently also led to weaker players being forced out of the scene. This year, Malaysia and Philippines reported the greatest number of replacement car tire brands at 61 and 59, while players in the Thai market stood at 51. Car owners in Indonesia had the least number of options, with only 24 car tire brands availed to them. In the first eight months of 2016, two of the markets—Thailand and Malaysia—exhibited healthy growth in sales volume of replacement car tires by eight and three percent respectively, when compared to the same period in 2015. Meanwhile, slight declines in demand were experienced in neighboring Philippines and Indonesia and by three and two percent respectively.
According to GfK reports for Central Malaysia, the intensive promotional efforts by manufacturers to woo back consumers post implementation of GST in April 2015 caused a substantial 24 percent dip in car tire average selling price from the previous year. Competitive price adjustments continued into 2016, which caused its average price to decline a further 26 percent compared to a year ago. Similar downtrends in replacement car tire prices have also been witnessed in Thailand and Philippines, although to a lesser extent. GfK findings revealed a general declining price trend of replacement car tires across the region in recent years. Indonesian car owners have been, and continue to enjoy the most affordable tires which currently cost an average of USD48—down from USD52 in 2014. In comparison, those in Thailand are paying nearly twice as much at around USD90—although this is already a reduction from the USD98 average price two years ago, and USD94 last year. The greatest fluctuation is reflected in Malaysia where tire prices have dropped from USD91 in 2014, to USD72 a year ago and reaching a substantially lower average price of USD54 in the first eight months of 2016.

Youth Focus Spotting Developmental Delays in Your Child: Ages 3-4
by Alexey Shestopalov
Every child grows and learns at his own pace, and the range of what’s normal is pretty wide. It’s helpful, though, to know the signs that your child might not have the skills most other children have at his age. Doctors call those problems developmental delays. Many delays aren’t serious, and most children can catch up, especially when they get early treatment. The key is to get your child the help he needs as soon as you think there’s a problem. If you wonder whether your little one is falling behind in emotional, mental, or physical growth, don't wait to find out. Talk to his doctor right away. What Are Developmental Delays? There are many different types. Children might have problems with: • Language or speech • Movement, or motor skills • Emotional and social skills • Thinking skills Language and Speech Delays These problems are the most common types of developmental delay. They sound similar, but they’re different types of issues. Speech means the sounds that come out of a person’s mouth. Children who have a speech delay may stutter or have trouble saying words the right way. Language refers to the meanings of sounds and gestures. Children with language problems may have trouble expressing themselves or understanding others. Possible causes. A delay in these skills can happen for many reasons, including: • Problems with a child’s tongue or the roof of his mouth, which makes it hard to form sounds and words • Hearing loss. Children who’ve had a lot of ear infection can have hearing problems • A learning disability • A developmental disorder, such as cerebral palsy or autism spectrum disorder. What you can do? If you think your child has a problem with his speech or language, let his doctor know right away. The doctor will need to test his hearing. The doctor will probably also suggest that your child see a professional who can diagnose and treat these delays, called a speech-language pathologist or speech therapist. This specialist will study how your child expresses himself, including:
• What he understands • What he can say • Other ways he tries to get his thoughts across, such as gestures or nodding If your child does have a delay, he might need speech therapy. A therapist can work with him on how to pronounce words and sounds, and strengthen the muscles in his face and mouth. You can also work with your child on speech and language: • Talk with her throughout the day. Point out objects or sounds at home, at the grocery store, in the car, or anywhere you go. Ask her questions and respond to her answers. • Read to your child every day. • Get treatment for ear infection or any other condition that might affect her hearing. Speech and Language: What is Normal There’s no deadline for a child to start talking or using full sentences. But most children reach speech and language milestones by a certain age. By 3 years, children usually: • Talk in short sentences, can identify body parts, and make words plural.

Generous students from Garden International School (GIS) donated dozens of books to a Pattaya library. Languages’ Prefect Narisa asked students to donate any books they no longer needed. Students responded brilliantly and filled up several boxes with books. IB1 students helped load the books for IB Coordinator Mark Beales, who then took them to the North Star Library in Pattaya, which is part of the Father Ray Foundation. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.
The Cities Book and Unfolding Journeys from Lonely Planet Kids
By 4 years, children usually: • Can tell a simple story and recall short nursery rhymes • Use sentences of about five words • Use "me" and "you" correctly • Also, take note if your child loses skills he has already learned. It is always better to take your child to a child specialist to be assessed if you know if he/ she can’t do some of the above. Alexey Shestopalov is Early Years Teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That ‘The Hearse’ is an idiot plot without any equal Most likely, the worst horror film of 1980 Really bad movies have their own fascination. It’s good now and then to salute the worst as well as the best. Bela Lugosi starred in what’s probably the worst movie of all time – Plan 9 From Outer Space – where the spacecraft are certainly flying dinner plates. But the silly effort is remembered with fondness by movie buffs, the more so as it was Lugosi’s last movie before his death half way through production in 1956. Appearing in 1980, ‘The Hearse’ has few redeeming features, certainly not the idiot plot. The movie’s only humour is unintentional and barely visible. The idiot in this case is a young woman, played by Trish Van Devere, who decides to move to a small town to live in the house of a dead aunt. She makes the decision, so we are told in a pointless scene with a psychiatrist, because she wants to put the events of the past year behind her, notably a nervous breakdown and a collapsed relationship. So Trish drives for 24 hours and arrives in the small town in the middle of the night. Her car
collides with a huge black hearse but nobody is injured and, miraculously, there’s no damage to her vehicle when daylight shows up. Who is driving the hearse remains a secret as it disappears round a bend soon after the accident. She is then shown round the house by a garrulous lawyer played by Joseph Cotton who seems to think the house should have been left to him in the dead aunt’s will. Trish next has a run-in with the local sheriff and is cheered or jeered whilst jogging by two teenage boys. From these encounters, we learn that sex starvation appears to be rampant in the old town. Trish moves into the house and there are soon the expected ominous happenings, including a music box which plays even when shut, a slamming door or two, the appearance of the dead aunt in a mirror and at a window, footsteps in the middle of the night, and broken doors and windows which don’t need the repairman to look as good as new. Meantime the black hearse appears a couple of times
but nobody knows why. If these happenings had occurred to you or me, we would immediately have cancelled the vacation on the grounds that the darned place was haunted. But not our Trish. She gets up every morning fresh as a bobbin and ready to take more insults on the chin from the hostile locals. When she tries to buy some provisions at the local store, she is told “we don’t deliver out there”. Then, quite out of the blue, Tom turns up. He’s dishy, polite and old fashioned. Trish kinda likes him, especially after he takes her for a trip in a row boat. It’s obvious to anybody watching the film that Tom is in reality a ghost, the boyfriend of the dead aunt, but Trish persists in believing he’s just a normal all American boy. Oh, and he’s good in bed by the way. In this movie, you never find a consistent framework
for the terrible things which are taking place. We are told that the dead aunt was interested in witchcraft, although how this relates to the rest of the so-called plot is a complete mystery. And why is Tom hanging around seducing young women? Then there’s the local priest who seems to think Satan may be involved and holds up his cross as winds blow through the old house. Is the residence really haunted and, if so, what bearing does that have on the rest of the characters? At the very end, we see the black hearse crashing into a ravine and bursting into flames. Tom is in the driver’s seat and smiling just before the catastrophe. Maybe he knows something we don’t about the afterlife. Pity they never made a sequel. Pitiable but most certainly understandable.

7 Common Relationship Issues, And How You Can Fix Them Most relationships will have a hiccup at some point. Some relationship challenges are difficult to talk about due to their personal nature, but many are superficial and easy to bring out into the open.
Relationships can live or die depending on how these issues are resolved. Not handling them the right way can often end up in one of the partners being shown the door; signaling the end of a beautiful friendship. This article will focus on tips to help resolve seven of the most common problem areas that relationships will almost always stumble through. 1. Infidelity This is a big one and can be a major deal breaker when the affair is finally exposed. Feelings of betrayal and rejection are sure to surface. These feelings present a major hurdle for the relationship due to the difficulty a betrayed partner will have in getting over these feelings and moving on. To heal the rift may require both partners each accepting some part of the blame for the failings in the relationship. Marriage counseling is often helpful, and is responsible for many couples rekindling their relationship. 2. Possessive Mothers Allowing a mother of either partner to have too much influence in the relationship can spell trouble. This kind of interference needs to be tackled early on so it doesn’t get out of hand and cause bitterness on one side or the other. Couples need to come up with a game plan together on how much time should be spent with parents, and then stick to it no matter what. Failure to do so could spell disaster for an otherwise happy and long-lasting partnership.
Keep telling yourself that your partner is with you, not because you are forcing them, but because they would rather be with you than someone else. 4. Lack Of Sex Drive The initial fiery passion dwindles after the first few months and you may notice that your sex life isn’t what it used to be. Sex can feel like it would just be getting in the way, rather than being a fun pastime. Just get a bit more creative with your sex life in order to rekindle that initial passion. Pretty soon you will both have a hard time keeping your hands off each other all over again. 5. Bringing Up The Past When you’re feeling irritated or perhaps a little slighted by your partner it can be fairly easy to remind your partner of an offense they may have committed in the distant past. Why bring back bad memories? If you’ve had an argument in the past and reconciled, then you should fight the urge to relive it and just opt to leave the past in the past. You can’t be happy in the relationship if you keep bringing back miserable memories from long ago. Just get over it and look forward to the future. 6. Financial Matters A lot of relationships crumble under financial pressure. Partners should always be open and honest about their financial obligations when going into a serious relationship. Regardless of whether it is a car loan or an oppressive credit card debt, you should never hide these from the relationship. Decide right now that all financial decisions will be joint ones, especially the bigger commitments. 7. Communication Breakdown
You always have plenty to talk about in the beginning of a relationship and conversations are often long and rewarding. This excitement dwindles over time, and lovers can feel that there is nothing new to learn. Our personalities are dynamic and the person we are now is probably different to the person we were years ago. It’s never wise to think that you know everything there is to know about your partner. Doing so could cause the relationship to falter, especially if one of the couple starts to confide in others, who somehow seem to understand them more than their partner does. and
Aquarius (Jan 23-Feb 22) There has never been an Aquarius of any significance and
you are certainly no exception. In fact, you are a complete bore and there’s absolutely no point in joining any Pattaya clubs as you would be totally ignored or asked not to come again. Baht bus drivers hate you as, when you get on the vehicle, the other passengers immediately leave without paying the fare. Aquarians find sex very difficult as they never get to know anybody well enough. Pisces (Feb 23-Mar 22) You are extremely unintelligent but have yet to realize the fact. It’s true that you were shortlisted to appear on TV’s University Challenge, but this was only as a member of the audience and not as a contestant: they need dumb-clucks like you to clap and whistle when ordered to do so. You are very ugly and if a member of the opposite sex asks you what time it is, then best to assume there is nothing more interesting behind the question. Aries (Mar 23-Apr 22) Venus is in the ascendant right now so this is a good time for you to go shop-lifting which is your principal hobby. Try to steal from stores and malls when it is raining heavily as store detectives are distracted and the alarms may not be working properly. Be careful not to wear a large, flowery hat or staff may think you have a pile of watches underneath. If caught, say you are from Mongolia as there aren’t too many translators from that country in the Pattaya area. Taurus (Apr 23-May 22) You are a bull-shitter rather than a bull. The problem is that people see through you very easily. You were a total failure as an estate agent and did not even know what an escrow account is, believing it to be a bird’s nest of some kind. You will likely end up in a Thai prison before the end of the year, but don’t worry as this is one of the best ways to learn Thai thoroughly. Sawasdee crap. Gemini (May 23-June 22) Your perverted love life is in a complete shambles and you were lucky to escape after that maniac chained you to the bed near the Walking Street. Venus remains in your sign and that’s good because Venus has antibiotic properties. In view of what you get up to at weekends you are going to need all the planetary protection you can muster. Beware of anyone introducing herself as Clio The Whip Lady as she may not be all woman under the worn leather undies. Cancer (June 23-July 22) Your interest in astrology is very limited and, please note, the Milky Way is not a chocolate bar you can eat between meals. You need to put some planning and logic into your sex life. For example, don’t kill the messenger and hate the player not the game. In other words, your rage should be directed at your diseased ex-boyfriend and not the nice lady from the venereal department of the local hospital.
3. The Green Eyed Monster – Jealousy
Jealousy is perhaps one of the biggest relationship killers if it’s allowed to fester. You could be fuming over a bit of flirting you noticed your partner engaging in. Whether it’s a coworker, spunky bartender, or cute cocktail waitress; you can easily avoid letting jealousy consume you.
by Professor Blunt
by Madam Zyra
(July 23-Aug 22) There is Leo plenty in your life that doesn’t
make much sense right now. You tried to learn chess for three months and lost every time because you didn’t realize that Black has a Queen as well as White. With Castor and Pollux both in heavenly decline at the moment, you should not try anything new. For example, don’t even think about going to a driving range as they don’t like heavy vehicles on the putting greens. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22) Ever since you found out that the Cosmos isn’t a discount pub in Jomtien, you have been very depressed. But you have to understand how the licensing trade works. For example, “two for the price of one” doesn’t apply to a crate of Johnny Walker and “happy hour” is not a matter of demanding free drinks in return for telling a couple of jokes. You will soon take up reading the Bible – especially the bit about water turning into wine. Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22) You are far too negative in your thoughts, believing for example that long-faced people in a dentist’s waiting room are invariably terminally ill. A good way to avoid disappointment is to lower your expectations. Thus, before having sex, imagine that the person undressing has two smelly feet. When it is shown that the person has only one smelly foot, it will be a pleasant surprise. You can change two smelly feet when in the real situation. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 22) You have been misled by Woody Allen’s remark that bisexuality increases your chance of a date on a Saturday night. It is also a very expensive way to be as you need to keep two wardrobes, one full of suits and the other of dresses, which is probably why bisexuals are seldom wealthy. Bisexuals tend to be unlucky too – Hitler had high blood pressure and Papa Doc talked to severed heads in his fridge. Do be careful. Sagittarius (Nov 23-Dec 22) You are an unspeakable cad. You failed to commit suicide by turning on the gas in the kitchen and succeeded only in killing the parrot in the next room as you forgot to close the door. You ought to make a phone call and speak to the Samaritan organization in Pakistan. They may get excited when they find out you are suicide prone and ask if you can drive a truck. Capricorn (Dec 23-Jan 22) You have always wanted to make a name for yourself and it looks like next week will be your high spot. The good news that you will be at the centre of a human interest story and will be responsible for saving a group of pensioners from a burning building. The bad news is that the department of forensics will be able to identify you only from your teeth. Post mortem photos of you in the Pattaya media are unlikely although Youtube will be interested.

Local Sports Buffalo Bill takes the “Jewel” comfortably by N. Body
Emerald It had been sometime since we played out at Emerald GC, with 23 enthusiastic golfers we set out not really knowing what to expect. Pattaya had been hit with plenty of rain up till about 6 am, so we were somewhat uncertain what the outcome would be. We arrived to see that the course looked to be in great shape, there were patches of water on the fairways but nothing to be concerned about. Playing from the white tees we introduced “Pick, Clean and Place” as there was evidence of water and what looked to be a lack of run. Two flights were the order of the day, A-flight (0 to 17) was taken out by Bill Steinmann amassing 41 points, and creating plenty of space between him and the next place getter. Taking second spot was Steve Younger beating Martin Todd, who came in third, on a countback. B flight saw newcomer Andy Zwart take the prize rather comfortably from Niall Stuart and Troy Pickford, coming in third getting the nod beating The Colonel in a countback. Results: A-Flight 1st – Bill Steinmann (12) 41 points 2nd – Steve Younger (12) 36 points. (Winning the count back) 3rd – Martin Todd (10) 36 points B-Flight 1st - Andy Zwart (30) 35 points 2nd - Niall Stuart (35) 31 points 3rd - Troy Pickford (19) 29 points

Into a new month and a trip to Bangpra. The weather was great, 29 degrees with a light breeze and the course in excellent condition. This course really suffered in the dry spell but it is back to its usual standard. Today the greens were a bit slower than Bangpra at its fastest but tricky enough for most. Jimmy Carr started off like a meteor with 14 points after six holes but, like a meteor, faded and only managed a further 14 points on the remaining 12 holes. The star of the day was Geoff Cox who amassed 23 points on the front nine, just two over the card and although he faltered on the back with 15 points easily took first place with 38 points. Neil Carter, who was proudly supporting the US in the Ryder Cup (but he’s from Canada!!) and getting some good natured heckling, had 21 points on the back nine and took second place with 36 points followed by Tony Robbins in third with 33 points. It was Geoff and Neil’s day as they shared the near pins. It was good to welcome back Laurence Harding having a break from his tennis . Results: 1st - Geoff Cox (15) 38 points 2nd - Neil Carter (14) 36 points 3rd - Tony Robbins (16) 33 points Near Pins: Geoff Cox 2 and Neil Carter We faced a dark grey sky as we set off for Pattavia and the rain hit as we proceeded up 331 and continued almost to the course. PJ was taking bets on how quickly before it caught us but his fears were unfounded as the thunder rumbled all day but the storm held off until the last group moved off the 18th green. Then it hit with a vengeance with a massive lightning bolt striking the side of the 18th fairway a few minutes after we finished. It was a day for the 16 handicaps and Jimmy Carr. After his burnout on Monday Jimmy started cautiously with 15 points on the front but then turned it on and 23 points on the back nine gave him 38 points and a comfortable win. Lance ConwayJones and Tony Robbins went head to head all day and Tony finally got in front on the 16th only to carelessly three putt the last two holes giving Lance second place with 36 points and Tony third with 35 points. Results: 1st - Jimmy Carr (16) 38 points 2nd - Lance Conway- Jones (16) 36 points 3rd - Tony Robbins (16) 35 points Near Pins: Lance Conway-Jones 2, Tony Robbins and Arne Jorgensen
Dave Ferris with John Emmerson, Dale Shier and Butch Furneaux back home Phoenix Gold – Stableford – White tees We were offered an early tee time for Phoenix Gold today so departure was 7:45 am, a good half an hour earlier than normal. Everyone got the memo save for one poor soul who had one of those forehead-slapping moments when he arrived to find the bus had gone and he realized his mistake. Another good thing about early tee times in October is that you will usually beat the rains. The course was in magnificent shape and the greens were the kind we are used to, rolling fast and true. Not everyone likes the changes to the course but this is what we will have to live with. The Caddy Smile near pin was won today by visiting Englishman Alan Young. Alan says he is George’s brother, but we are still waiting for the DNA results from the lab to verify this.
Up to the podium proper, we see our dapper buddy Dale Shier turn in a big 37 on his card. That was very nice shooting M’ludd. The win today was shared by Chris Smith, playing off a “zero” handicap…that’s scratch to you and me…but I’m not bitter, not jealous at all. Joining Chris was John Entsuah once again who is having a good run of luck these days. “Be that as it may” Capt. Phil got the lads back to TGC before 3 pm today, which is another good reason to get in those early tee times! Results: T -1st –Chris Smith (0) 38 points T -1st – John Entsuah (11) 38 points 3rd– Dale Shier (13) 37 points
Burapha A & B – Stableford – Yellow Tees First off, we say goodbye to Butch and Rusty who have joined up with us these past few weeks and we wish them well on their respective trips back home. Butch won today with a 41 and you will remember Rusty won at Silky Oaks last week. There was at least one great shot Dale Shier pulled out of his socks today and the well-earned near pin was all his. I am told by his playing partners that Dale took out a seven-iron for the 165 yard tester, into the wind no less, and stuck it to two feet. Three minutes later he was sinking the birdie putt to also win one of our new “Birdie” poker drinks chips. The other highlight was Dave Ferris and his front nine. When a 19 handicapper bags three birdies to score a 24 on the front, the day is going to be a good one. Those golfing Gods were sitting on Dave’s shoulder that morning and the postman could do no wrong. A decent 17 points on the back guaranteed Ferris a piece of the pie
Geoff Cox, Bunker Boys winner Monday and second Friday Final round of the week was at Mountain Shadow and at last the weather was fine throughout and no threat of rain. The recent spell of weather had certainly helped the grass growth and the rough lived up to its name. This is a tight course and several of the holes have 180 yards carry to the fairway leaving the shorter hitters hunting for balls in the rough short of the fairway. There was little run and consequently off the blue tees scores were not so good. It was Geoff Cox setting the early pace following on from Monday but he had invited his good friend Laurence Harding to play and they had a close duel with Laurence catching Geoff and taking first place from him on count back both with 34 points. Third place was close with Thomas Nyborg making a rare appearance and winning on count back from Tony Robbins and Neil Carter all with 33 points. There were two excellent near pins: Tony Robbins getting within two feet on the 170 yard 8th and Gerry Cooney to three feet on the 190 yard 17th. Results: 1st - Laurence Harding (16) 34 points cb 2nd - Geoff Cox (15) 34 points cb 3rd - Thomas Nyborg (15) 33 points cb Near Pins: Neil Carter, Tony Robbins, Geoff Parker and Gerry Cooney The Bunker Boys play out of The M Club located 100 metres up Soi 14 off of 3rd Road. Is there any course with better scenery of the area? With a later than usual start, some took the opportunity to sleep in, others a more leisurely breakfast and extra cups of coffee. Finally the lucky 13 loaded up the cars and were on their way. Arriving at the big facility, check-in was smooth and most golfers spent some time on the putting green before the long ride out to the first tee. And what a first tee it is! George McEwan and Bill Steinmann, with a guest appearance from the jock Shane Young. Also a shy Abbo in the background! Stableford Twenty-three golfers, with expectations high gathered at the Growling Swan for our first trip to Phoenix. I am not sure as to why we don’t go to this course as traveling time is certainly in its favor. The weather was somewhat warm but a little overcast. The first nine we played it was a little uncomfortable to start (weather wise). The back nine was even better; the temperature had dropped and the threat of rain was out there. We got thru with no rain to mention. What a fantastic course, it was in great nick, we played Lake and Ocean 9’s from the white tees. This would have to be one of the best courses that I have played at with the facilities the way they are, also the staff are out to help and make your day enjoyable. As you will see the scores were not fantastic, you can put that down to fact that it is a tough course. Playing two flights it was George McEwan that took out A flight from Bill Steinmann with Peter Bailey filling 3rd spot. B flight saw Glenn Smith scale the podium once again to take the chocolates from Sandy Leiper with Peter Grey taking 3rd spot. The fairways excellent and greens well covered, but a few complained the greens were a bit bumpy, probably from coring a couple months back. The weather which started out hot turned mild, the best we've had for a long time. Of course, riding in style helps. Despite all the water holes, Silky is famous for generating good scores, and today was no exception. In first place Landis Brooks (c/h 8) showed everyone he hasn't lost his touch after an extended trip to England by earning 40 points off his enviable handicap. Great going Landis! John

Stuvik sizzles in scorching Sepang
The eighth round of the GP3 Series took place at the Sepang International Circuit just outside Kuala Lumpur, as usual as the supporting event of the Formula One World Championship. Sandy Stuvik showed great pace in free practice session where he was second for most of the session after only doing three fast laps before switching focus to preparing the race setup for the races later on in the weekend. In qualifying, Sandy put his Trident car in 8th position after the hottest qualifying session of the year for the GP3 Series. The cars and drivers were pushed to their limits on the Malaysian asphalt. “I’m quite happy with this session as I really felt like I gave it my all. We do have some corners that need to be improved, so it looks like it will be a very close fight for the points in tomorrow’s race,” said Sandy. For the first race of the
weekend for the GP3 Series, Thai driver Sandy Stuvik started in 6th position, as one of the other drivers had an outstanding penalty from the previous round. Sandy had a troublesome start and lost some positions, after the settled the Thai driver brought the car home in 10th position to claim another championship point. For the final GP3 race, Sandy had to pit to change his front wing, rendering the Thai driver’s race effectively over. Sandy showed strong qualifying pace but needs to work with the team to improve the race pace in order to fight for more points in the final races in Abu Dhabi in two months time. Sandy is supported by Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, Thai Airways, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

You & Your Pets Show compassion for soi cats Pattaya certainly has more than its share of feral cats, frequently maligned by residents, local communities and even bird enthusiasts. Some intolerant condominium buildings have banned residents from feeding homeless felines, while groups of heartless cat haters have called for the kitties to be rounded up and euthanized. Yes, in answer to conservationists, cats do prey on wildlife, including birds, rodents, lizards and other small mammals. But not to the extent that they threaten the extinction of any species in this region. If anything, cats function as a natural population control mechanism of rats and other undesirable species. A thriving local ecology is a matter of the delicate balance of many factors. When the population of any one species grows too large—whether that species is birds, rodents, small mammals, or even feral cats—that balance is lost and the local ecology can be disrupted. Most of these free-roaming domestic cats were never socialized by humans. Or they were dumped by
their owners and have lived outdoors for so long that they have reverted to a wild state. They are forced to hunt for food, or subsist on the efforts of well-meaning humans who offer them food and clean water sources. The solution to the problem of growing soi cat populations must begin with pet owners recognizing the consequences of releasing a cat or kitten outdoors to fend for itself. Hunger, starvation, disease, mauling, and intentional mistreatment by humans are only some of the dire outcomes. Secondly, where feral cat populations are too high, civic or community action may be needed to humanely trap, spay/neuter, test and vaccinate, and then release the cats into other neighborhoods or cities that are not overpopulated. Of course that begins by establishing community shelters and rescue efforts. It cannot all be done by the likes of Paul and Sandra (see adjacent column, Cats for You in Pattaya) and the handful of righteous animal lovers who do what they can to save and care for homeless cats.
Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
Gypsy
Unfortunately, not all feral cats can be saved or re-homed. Most do not accept human touch, so typically are not even candidates for shelters. In fact, the stress of being captive in a shelter can cause extreme psychological stress to these cats, which has a direct correlation with deteriorating health, making them more unlikely to be adopted. As individuals, we can help provide these furry neighbors with food and water. We can support existing shelters and lend a hand to those involved in caring for abandoned animals. And as a community we can work together to establish shelters and develop programs to ensure the survival of these hardy, self-sufficient creatures.
This lovely 3 coloured girl came to us with 4 babies all of which have now gone to new homes. She has just had her operation so now cannot have any more. She is a very friendly girl who just loves playing and giving cuddles!!

These 2 small kittens were rescued separately but, as you can see, they are the best of friends now. They are typical kittens and tear around the place for an hour or so before falling fast asleep.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being. Does your pet have arthritis? Arthritis is common in middleaged and older pets and sometimes even in younger dogs and cats. The ailment causes painful changes in the joints. But pet owners are not always aware of the signs of arthritis. Visit a veterinarian if you see any of the following symptoms: *Limping or favoring one or more legs; it may be worse when he first wakes up. *Difficulty moving. Your dog may become reluctant to do things that were previously easy--like getting into the car or going up and
down stairs. Or your cat may stop jumping onto countertops, perches and other high areas because of the pain and discomfort. *Abnormal posture. Arthritic changes can affect the spine resulting in a sore neck, a hunch in the back, or lameness of one or both hind legs. *Fatigue. Your pet may tire more easily, find it painful to walk, and sleep or rest more than usual. *Irritability. Arthritic animals may become irritable, snapping when handled, particularly if your
touch increases their pain. *Atrophy. Due to inactivity and decreased use, muscle tissue may die off. One leg may look thinner than normal. *Obsessive behavior. Pets affected with arthritis may begin to lick at, chew or bite at body areas that are painful, which may cause inflamed skin and hair loss.
The little tufts of hair in a cat’s ear that help keep out dirt, direct sounds into the ear, and insulate the ears are called “ear furnishings.”
This lovely Tabby boy is now around 9 weeks old, he has 1 brother and 2 sisters too. They were rescued with their mum from the streets and are now big enough to go to a new home so please be quick to call and reserve one.

This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago. She was sick when she was small and so missed the opportunity to be chosen. Her mum, Zero, is here as well, they would make a perfect pair for someone.
Cat Corner Tip Glow-in-the-Dark Eyes
During the Middle Ages, mixed breeds of peasants’ dogs were required to wear blocks around their necks to keep them from breeding with noble hunting dogs. Purebred dogs were very expensive and hunting became the province of the rich
Going to the Dogs... You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.
~Robert Louis Stevenson
Many cultures, such as the ancient Egyptians, have admired cats as divine beings. The fact that their eyes often glow in the dark only adds to the mystique. As it turns out, there's a fairly mundane explanation for this phenomenon. Feline eyes have a layer of tissue called the tapetum lucidum, which reflects light back through the retina. It helps facilitate their exceptional night vision.
