Pattaya expats in shock T

he 1,000 or so American expats and long-stayers on the Eastern Seaboard are speechless after the unexpected win by Donald Trump as the next US president. Victory parties which had been organized in Bangkok and Pattaya were cancelled after it became clear that the greatest upset in American electoral history had occurred.

“Nearly all American expats in Thailand are anti-Trump,” said computer engineer Jerry Saunders, “and it just never crossed anyone’s mind that Hillary Clinton could lose the race to the White House.”

Trump’s spectacular success came in spite of all electoral opinion polls over months which showed him trailing the Democratic

party candidate.

There was a near consensus in the American mainstream media and Washington and Wall Street elite that Trump’s hugely controversial sexist and racist behaviour, his poor performance in formal debates with Clinton and even his failure to obtain the full support of the luminaries of the Republican party would doom him in the election of November 8. It was not even clear what his actual policy was on some important issues. Thus he sometimes walked-back on his aim to expel all illegal immigrants from America and never successfully explained how he would force Mexico to pay for a much-publicized antiimmigrant wall separating the two countries.

Yet Trump, a real estate developer without any direct political experience, had his own recipe for success. He appealed in particular to the white under-class in America, the millions who found themselves unemployed or on paltry salaries, facts which Trump argued were due to globalization and the outsourcing of American jobs to such countries as China.

He promised to restore their jobs and to improve the lives of the “forgotten millions” who had been betrayed by the Washington

globalists led by president Obama. The fact that many jobs had disappeared, and would continue to do so, because of automation and the microchip rather than through globalization was rarely mentioned, even by Trump’s opponents.

He was also helped by the fact that polling in advanced democratic societies has become much more difficult.

News Road checkpoint New customer turns up stolen robs bar owner motorbike

Iranian assaulted Nattapol Khachalak, 21, was apprehended on a stolen motorbike at a police checkpoint on Sukhumvit Road. Police determined that the license plate was fake and later found out that the motorcycle was reported lost. The suspect denied the allegation of theft, explaining that he had bought the bike from a friend. Nattapol was arrested and the bike was returned to the owner, Adinan Chainamaorm.

Drunk driver dead

Iranian Omid Labihijan, 27, was assaulted on Walking Street

by Kiwi Philip Halaki, who denied the allegation when confront by police. The New Zealander said that he was talking to a group of ladyboys when suddenly Omid grabbed his ass. Halaki pushed the Iranian who then fell onto the pavement, injuring his face and ear. Labihijan was sent to Pattaya Memorial Hospital and Halaki was sent to the police station.

Police arrest 30 for drug and alcohol use

Some 30 people were arrested in a span of four hours at a check point at Central Pattaya Road and Third Road. Most tested positive for drug or alcohol substance.

A female bar patron successfully made off with a gold necklace and 15,000 baht from the till, and then drove off on the bar owner’s motorbike. The victim, Aorn Chaichana, told Pattaya police that an unidentified woman had been drinking at her beer bar for two consecutive days.

On the second day, when the owner felt she had had too much to drink, she and a

friend stepped outside for some fresh air, leaving their new drinking companion alone in the bar. Subsequently, the customer offered to buy snacks at a nearby convenience store, and asked Aorn if she could borrow her motorbike to run the errand. After 30 minutes, Aorn became suspicious.

Checking the cash register, she found that her necklace and cash were missing.

Armed bus driver busted

Rithdate Booliaphia, 21, was found on the road lifeless. The victim’s friend, Watcharin Kongthong, 23, said that they came from a drinking session with friends in Jomtien and decided to convoy on their way home. When Watcharin lost sight of his trailing friend, he went back and found the younger man lying dead on the road.

Gang attacks driver, robs motorbike

A group of teenagers assaulted Aarachai Manem and tried to rob his motorcycle when he parked in Rompho market on Thepprasit Road. Aarachai was found lying on the ground with his face swollen and bleeding. During questioning, he said that five or six teenagers approached and asked for the motorbike key.

When he refused, they hit him with a cement brick.

Stopped at a traffic checkpoint, a tourist bus driver was busted by police who uncovered drugs and arms in the man’s possession.

The 39-year-old bus driver, Suthep Boonyang, explained that kept his .38 mm gun for protection against other drivers, but he came up with no justification for carrying 1.4 grams of crystal meth.

Thailand invites everyone to contribute to people’s archive in remembrance of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej

The Thai Government announced that when the first 30 days of the mourning period for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej have passed on November 14, 2016, restrictions on festive celebrations and entertainment venues will be lifted and television and radio broadcasts can return to normal programming.

The government made the announcement to reassure visitors with plans to visit Thailand that all events and festivals will be going ahead as planned. It is also to let locals know that, while the mourning period is being respected, other areas of life will be returning to normal to avoid

disruption and to enable people to make a living.

All entertainment venues, parties, festivals and radio and television broadcasts resumed on November 14, 2016.

Arrangements for nationally celebrated events including the Loi Krathong festival held on November 14, Christmas celebrations and New Year countdowns, as well as the Chinese New Year celebrations will be going ahead as planned.

Local fairs and festive events such as walking street markets, Red Cross fairs, entertainment activities – Likay folk performance, concert and contest,

and traditional ceremonies – Kathin robe offering, wedding party and Buddhist ordination ceremony – will be taking place as normal.

Hotels will be able to hold celebrations and events, including meetings and seminars, and parties.

In addition, sporting fixtures will go ahead as planned. Also clubs, bars and entertainment venues will be returning to their usual opening hours.

However, as this is still a reverence time for the Thai people, overt celebrations of events may still be toned down slightly as a mark of respect, but this will have no effect on scheduling.

Thailand’s Ministry of Culture invites the local people and visitors to share photos and video clips to mark the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej to be included in a memorial book titled “The People’s Archives” and a documentary “Forever in Thai Hearts”.

Photos can be uploaded to Facebook at Pic.Culture2559 or via the Line application. Anyone submitting images needs to include the date, time and location where the picture was taken, as well as the owner’s name and contact details.

In addition, as a way of celebrating Thailand’s past and culture during this historical transition period, the Department of Fine Arts, Ministry of Culture invites all visitors to visit national museums and historical parks throughout Thailand with free

admission from now until January 31, 2017.

There are a total of 42 national museums throughout the country including Bangkok’s National Museum and the Museum of the Royal Barges, Ayutthaya’s Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, Chiang Mai National Museum, Nakhon Ratchasima’s Phimai National Museum, Nakhon Si Thammarat National Museum, and Songkhla National Museum. Across the country, there are 10 historical parks, including in Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Buri Ram’s Phanom Rung Historical Park, and Kanchanaburi’s Mueang Sing Historical Park.

to track by pollsters, a problem which many experts believe also bedeviled the June 2016 British referendum, leading to the unexpected Brexit decision. Although Trump most certainly made grievous mistakes in his campaign, seeming to insult the parents of a US Muslim soldier killed in action overseas, and ridiculing women for their physical appearance, it seems that many voters - including many female voters -felt that choosing Hillary Clinton was the worse of two evils. She stood for a continuation of Obama’s economic policies which they felt had already brought ruin on them. She was also unpopular because of a scandal involving her use of a private e-mail server whilst secretary of state, a practice which was condemned by the FBI as extremely careless but not actually criminal. In other words, many voters may

well have held their noses as they entered a cross in the nation’s ballot booths.

Yet the US presidential election will mean little to Thailand, according to business experts, if only because the new president’s domestic economic woes will be at the top of his agenda. A spokesman for the Thai commerce ministry, Wiboonlasana Ruamraksa, said “The US will continue to play its role maintaining trade relationships in the international market”. But he added that Trump’s protectionist positions on trade and his oft-stated hostility to existing global pacts might challenge the growth of Thai exports to America. Trump has stated he intends to cancel the Chinese-sponsored TransPacific Partnership, but this is not a problem for Thailand which has not yet joined the cartel. The United States is

currently Thailand’s thirdlargest trading partner after China and Japan. Trump has several times stated he would renegotiate overseas trade deals to add more impetus to his wish to restrict global free trade.

The Trump win, akin to the UK’s surprise Brexit vote, is likely to lead to a short-term sell-off of US and Asian stocks and the Mexican peso. There is also likely to be currency volatility and both the baht and the pound may rise a cent or two against the dollar. However, currency experts say that Trump’s electoral success will not seriously dent the US dollar in the medium term. The US Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates next month, which will boost the dollar, whilst the euro and the pound continue to be mired by the Brexit vote and sluggish economic growth throughout the European Union.

Finnish consulate coming to Pattaya After years of talk and months of planning, Thailand’s Marine Department has scheduled a January 1, 2017 launch-date for ferry service between Pattaya and Hua Hin. Royal Passenger Liner Company will operate ferries carrying up to 150 passengers a day between the two resort cities, according to Sorasak Sansombat, the department’s

director-general. Larger capacity boats are expected to be introduced later.

Onyx challenges Thai youths to create useful items from waste materials As part of its environmental and community commitment, Onyx Hospitality Group announced its collaboration with Scrap Lab of Kasetsart University, Faculty of Architecture,

and Tlejourn, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), to launch the “Arts for the Planet 2017” project, which aims to demonstrate the potential of upcycling and aims to foster creative and innovative thinking in tackling one of the country’s key environmental issues— waste.

The Arts for the Planet project will be incorporated as part of the Scrap Lab course for a period of 14 weeks from January to May 2017. Registered students will have the opportunity to learn about the potential of usually overlooked waste materials, and will be offered guidance on how to transform such materials into practical products, particularly those used by hotels on a regular basis.

The project also aims to showcase

how a partnership between the business and educational sectors could offer environmental, societal and economic benefits.

During the course and the project, students will learn about overall environmental issues, including waste production and management, before going on to explore the design of ideas and processes, and then the development of products from waste materials under the supervision of renowned upcycling experts.

These experts will include Thailand’s pioneer of ecological design, Associate Professor Dr. Singh Intrachooto, head of the Creative Centre for Eco-design, as well as the founder of KU’s Scrap Lab, and Dr. Nattapong Nithi-Uthai, founder of Tlejourn, which is best known for its eco-friendly footwear made from upcycling ocean debris.

Onyx Hospitality Group collaborates with its business partners, including Kiat Siam Leatherware, Hawaii Furniture and ERP, to provide funds to the students participating in the Arts for the Planet project to support product development processes. To help the students bridge their creativity with functionality and business opportunities, the three business partners will provide assistance and consultancy to the students as the students develop their designs and production processes.

The committee will evaluate and select the best designed products. The winner, as well as the first and second runners up, will receive a scholarship from the Onyx Hospitality Group Foundation. Onyx Hospitality Group will consider using the products from the project at its properties.

Our Community Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort supports coral reef restoration As part of the resort’s continuing mission to implement innovative, ecofriendly, environmentally sustainable initiatives, Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort is breathing new life into the severely diminished coral reef population in the waters surrounding Koh Phi Phi. In October, the resort held its regular ‘Save the Sea’ event, where guests and staff team up to clean the local environment and give the local flora and wildlife a helping hand to counter environmentally damaging practices which have a negative impact on the habitats of Thailand’s stunning marine life.

A particular focus was placed on an innovative new method to reinvigorate the coral reef population in the waters surrounding Phi Phi Island using ‘Coral Reef Nurseries’.

A team of staff and guests took over 70 pieces of infantile staghorn coral, and planted them in specially designed nurseries, developed to provide the perfect foundation for coral growth. The aim is to leave the corals to grow for 10 months to one year and then replant them in the surviving reefs offshore where they then have a better chance to thrive and reproduce.

The staff at Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort already considers this initiative a

success as the coral specimens planted in previous months h a ve g row n f a s t e r t h a n expected and will soon be ready to be planted back into the natural reef. Scuba divers have already reported an increase in the types of fish known to frequent the local waters around Koh Phi Phi, including sightings of the Butterfly fish, Angel fish, Lion fish and many more. The Save the Sea green activity day also included a 1-km ocean ‘cleansweep’ starting from the beach at Phi Phi Island Village Island Beach Resort.

A large team, including volunteer guests and trained scuba diving staff, took to the ocean searching for any litter that was being swept into the local area. The volunteer guests took care of floating garbage while the professional divers removed any litter from the ocean floor.

The staff at Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort take the monthly clean up events very seriously. They understand the need to ensure that other people’s litter does not wash up on Phi Phi’s beaches or harm the indigenous marine life.

Chocolate Cup Cake Day!

Head Girl and Prefect Shilpi celebrated Chocolate Cupcake Day by inviting students to bake something

special. The best cupcake won a prize after being judged by English teacher Miss Smith and Principal Mrs Hawtree.

Hilton Pattaya’s Global Month of Service builds a playground for autistic children

Hilton Pattaya’s General Manager, Rudolf Troestler together with management team and hotel’s team members were recently welcomed by Lampong Thongsong, commander of Reconnoiter Battalion in the opening ceremony of pavilion and playground for autistic children at Hippotherapy Centre, Sattahip Naval Base.

In June this year, Hilton

started the ‘Bunny for Charity’ project in order to bring the funds raised from the sale of bunnies to build the playground and learning centre for brain development for disadvantaged infants and young children at Hippotherapy Centre.

Furthermore, they brought some toys and books donated by their guests and team members of Hilton Pattaya to

decorate the learning centre and also did some paintings for the playground and plant pots.

The playground project is a part of Hilton Worldwide’s Global Month of Service, which is the practice of

BENIHANA WINE TASTING For “Funtastic” Dining and Chilean Imbibing Japanese cuisine and Chilean wine would at first thought seem an unlikely marriage but that would be wrong, Chilean wine is big in Japan. Recently the Finance Ministry announced that it is now No.1 in terms of imports and volumes are growing rapidly.

Benihana Pattaya is ever pushing the culinary envelope and just a few weeks ago held a wine tasting featuring Chilean wines from the Hugo Casanova estates which was arranged by Akkarapong Yuwaphan, marketing officer of Wine Dee Dee Pattaya.

The history of this prestigious wine house dates back to the late 19th century when Eliseo Casanova, the first member of the Casanova family, arrived from Italy to continue the family’s tradition of producing wines of excellence. He purchased the estates of Batuco and Valle hermoso in Itata Valley where his dream began. Today the awardwinning wines have successfully orbited the globe.

Benihana’s history dates back to the ’60s when the eldest son of a Japanese coffee shop owner had the innovative idea to combine Japanese food and entertainment.

The first restaurant opened in New York in 1964 and Benihana and its famous “eatertainment” was born. Its reputation is based on their teppanyaki style of cooking; teppan means “steel grill” and yaki “grilled”. These two entrepreneurial enterprises combined recently to showcase their individual skills and products.

The décor at Benihana Pattaya is pleasing; rich traditional Japanese colours juxtapose with contemporary decor to create an ambiance of ease and comfort. The main dining area is a huge circular table of teppanyaki grills and comfortable seating. Private rooms and alcoves are positioned around the restaurant

creating individual areas for exclusive parties and get-togethers.

Benihana chefs receive 16 weeks of intensive training before the final accolade of a red kerchief to confirm their proficiency.

The first pour of the evening was a glass of Hugo Casanova Linaje Sauvignon Blanc 2015. This

fresh, medium-bodied wine paired beautifully with the premium sushi and sashimi which awaited us on arrival. The chefs now arrived at individual teppanyaki grills and the show began. Tiger prawns and snow fish were to be prepared and served with a HC Reserva Chardonnay 2012 which, with its complex tastes of

fruits and toasted notes, resonated with the prawns and delicate fish for a delicious marriage of well balanced flavours. The huge prawns tossed, danced and flew off chef’s cleaver while a selection of vegetables (snow peas, courgettes, and onions) were now being flounced and fried on the grill before being served in a zingy dressing of sesame oil and soy.

It was now the turn of the reds – a HC Reserva Merlot 2013 and a HC Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2014.

Both an intense ruby-red but the Merlot displayed ripe, robust tannins which proved the perfect companion to the perfectly tossed lamb while the Cabernet Sauvignon with its expressive and elegant body married

ideally with the Australian sirloin that received chef’s unique treatment.

The accompanying sauces were delicious: creamy, soft Japanese mustard, a fiery red hot chili paste, top quality soya and that nose grenade of mustards: wasabi. Dessert completed the evening served with the final pour of a HC Antano Reserva Rose 2016 with its floral aromas and fruity flavours escorted by bespoke crepes filled with fruits and conserves.

Restauranteering is always a tough business but here at Benihana the nail has been firmly hit on the head. It resonates with what the paying customers want: quality, consistency and value for money with the added attraction of fun and interactive enjoyment watching a master chef perform his amazing culinary skills. Slicing, dicing, throwing and catching are all performed before your very eyes with such good humour and high spirits that we left with smiley faces and happy memories of another Benihana dining experience with added treat of Hugo Casanova wines.

Tiramisu base Prepare a pâté à bombe mixture. Dissolve the sugar in a medium saucepan with boiling water. When clear, bring to the boil and place a sugar thermometer in the pan.

Meanwhile, whisk the yolks with an electric mixer until creamy. When the sugar syrup reaches 120°C, remove from the heat at once. Keep the mixer beaters running, drizzle the syrup onto the yolks and beat, on full speed, for 3-5 mins until you have a firm yellow foam. Remove and cool it down a bit, whisking occasionally.

Stir in the mascarpone until completely blended.

In a chilled bowl, whip the cream to soft peaks. Fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture to lighten.

Add Marsala wine and mix well.

Chill the mixture until assembly.

Coffee sauce Bring water, Nescafé powder and sugar to a boil. Cool it down a bit and add Marsala wine. Keep chilled until assembly.

Lady finger sponge Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Make a meringue with egg whites and sugar. Add egg yolks gradually while slowly whisking. Beat until soft peaks. Slowly fold in the flour until mixed. Try not to break the meringue.

Use a piping bag with round nozzle. Pipe the mixture in long shapes on to the baking sheet. Dust some icing sugar on top and bake for 13 mins. Remove from the oven and cut into 8 cm fingers. Set aside.

Hazelnut crumble Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Mix well butter, salt and brown sugar. Add in cake flour, corn flour and hazelnut powder and mix well.

Transfer to the baking sheet, spreading it in an even layer and bake for 20 mins.

Cool completely, and then break the crumble into smaller pieces with a blender. Store in an airtight container at room temperature until assembly.

Assembly Quickly dip each lady finger in the chilled coffee mixture and arrange to your liking. Do not soak the lady fingers or they will become too moist. Spread the mascarpone cream evenly with a spatula on top of the dipped lady fingers. Repeat with a second layer of dipped lady fingers and mascarpone cream. Sprinkle top with hazelnut crumble and dust with cocoa powder. Refrigerate for 2 hours before serving.

GOURMET GETAWAY MACAU: “Vegas of China” Pattaya’s International Airport (U-Tapao) flies to many destinations daily courtesy of Air Asia. We recently took the 12 noon flight to Macau. Best known as the “Vegas of China”, the Macau Special Administrative Region is indeed a mecca of glitz and gambling enclosing the highest branded hotels and five-star dining establishments.

It was a Portuguese colony for more than 300 years and today the cultures juxtapose making for the most interesting mix of cultures and traditions. Chinese temples sit on streets paved with antique Portuguese tiles and although Cantonese fills the air on the streets you can lunch on caldo verde soup or bacalhau (cod) fritters and dine on delicious Macanese fare.

Undoubtedly there is a gaudy side to Macau but just a short way from the centre you can dive down narrow backstreets reminiscent of days when the city was dubbed a sleepy enclave and discover some delightful Portuguese restaurants that will belie your true location.

Clube Militar de Macau is set on Avenida da Praia Grande in Macau City. Built in 1870 for the benefit of the Portuguese military officers, this striking pink baroque building was renovated in 1995 when its restaurant was opened to the public; unfortunately, the splendid sitting room and bar are reserved for club members only. However, the atmospheric restaurant oozes with colonial charm and ambiance with its teak flooring, ceiling fans and Chinese art that adorns the walls plus the hustle and bustle of street life is abandoned as you step into the club’s stately interior.

This is one of Macau’s inner sanctums and Mick and I had been looking forward to this for quite some time.

Lunch times there is a good set menu for MOP

501 (B.2,000 approx) for two, but we were looking forward to tasting one of their salted and dried cod dishes especially the filet of codfish in a herbed crust with a puree of chickpeas and an emulsion of roasted tomatoes. The lamb roasted in Portuguese sauce accompanied by potatoes and fried garlic also comes highly recommended. The set lunch which includes a choice of main course plus soup and a buffet complete with appetizers, salad and desserts is good value. An extensive array of Portuguese wines completes the experience.

A Petisqueira (The Larder) is another restaurant that so oozes with Portuguese sentiment it’s extraordinary; from the gingham tablecloths, the stag’s head mounted on the wall to the black and white tiles and the charismatic owner and waiting staff, it’s a fabulous place.

Every table seemed to be sharing vast cataplana dishes brimming with a seafood paella and quaffing jugs of sangria or bottles of Portuguese wine. The atmosphere was febrile with activity and lively conversation.

Homemade bread and creamy butter made a welcome appearance closely followed by our chosen starter of roasted sardines, cold octopus in tomato sauce and the speciality of the house, queijo fresca da casa (homemade cheese).

Crunchy skinned sardines rubbed with grassy olive oil and perfectly seasoned were bold and delicious, the cheese delightful and the octopus luscious and tender. For our main course we just had to order the signature Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa (salted cod with potatoes, onions and salt casserole). Salting the cod and prodigious rinsing prior to cooking results in a cod of chewier texture, milder and almost sweet yet still with its fishy taste – it was delicious.

Pour Absolut Vodka into a shaker. Add triple sec and sweet and sour mixture (combined sugar syrup and lime juice). Slice the fresh chili, remove the seeds, then put in the shaker. Add hot basil leaves, ice, then shake vigorously before straining the cocktail into a Martini glass.

Garnish with fresh chilis and hot basil leaves threaded onto a stir stick.

As for every martial art, Muay Thai has also had during its evolution the debate of strength vs technique.

Practitioners who may not have the same talent as others on their side tend to focus on the physical preparation as a way to compensate for it. In present times and for future developments it is important to combine both aspects to become an effective practitioner. All Muay Thai Grandmasters express their knowledge and wisdom time and time again about the subject and agree it is all about technique.

Training correct techniques involves training muscle memory. It is not a memory stored in your muscles, of course, but memories stored in your brain that are much like a cache of frequently enacted tasks for your muscles. It is a form of procedural memory that can help you progress positively at something through repetition combined with correct instruction and supervision, this method I apply to all my students.

When you are practicing a particular technique the idea is that you will continue to improve given that you are being trained correctly. "Practice makes perfect" can be an accurate phrase because the more you do something the more you build up that procedural memory and your brain can quickly instruct your muscles to carry out the desired task.

The key to apply the correct technique is to focus on the quality of the quantity.

When you practice, take it slow at first. Focus on learning the key aspects of the technique. Do not rush your training to learn the entire movement at once, break it down into parts and concentrate on learning one part at a time. Practice that section slowly until you have mastered it, then aim to combine the part that needs attention until you can apply them correctly and effectively to your full potentional.

Always remember, Be patient. Be humble. Be mindful.

A boiled egg is hard to beat If you’ve been avoiding eggs and their cholesterolladen yolks, here’s some bad news and some good news: The bad news is that you’ve been denying yourself based on questionable evidence. The good news is that you can eat eggs again.

The civilized world has rebuffed eggs for nearly three decades, fearing that the cholesterol in eggs was translating to artery-clogging cholesterol in the blood.

But when scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston looked at a population of 117,000 nurses who had been followed for eight to 14 years, they found no difference in heart disease risk between those who ate one egg a week and those who ate more than one egg a day.

Another study reported in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that eggs tended to satisfy obese and overweight subjects more than a bagel breakfast with an equal calorie count. Consequently, it could be argued, eggs might even be a good diet food.

Eggs have a high nutritional value, they are an excellent quality of protein, they are only 70 to 80 calories each, and they are not high in fat content. In a nutshell—or eggshell—what more could you ask for?

The American Heart Association says that one egg a day is acceptable. But keep in mind the cholesterol in that egg when combined with cholesterol derived from other foods that you eat in the day. People with heart disease, diabetes, or a high level of LDL ('bad') cholesterol should probably choose a small or medium egg rather than larger ones; egg whites have no cholesterol.

A large egg represents less than 4 percent of the daily calorie intake of a person eating 2,000 calories a day; it provides 10 percent of a person's daily recommended protein, and valuable iron, B vitamins, and minerals,

Say “No” to Ear Candles Putting anything inside your ear is a bad idea; putting a lit candle inside your ear is a worse idea.

Many people subscribe to the notion that sticking a hollow cone soaked in beeswax or paraffin in their ears and lighting the other end is supposed to draw out wax. First of all, there’s no proof that it works. Secondly, it’s dangerous. People using ear candles have burned themselves, blocked their ear canals with candle wax, and punctured their eardrums.

Never put anything larger than your thumb into your ear—not even cotton swabs; the human ear clears itself of earwax naturally. If you have severe wax build-up, see your doctor.

If you are extremely old or immuno-suppressed, be extra careful or just do not eat eggs. On the other hand, eggs are great for healthy older people in that they are high in protein and easy to chew.

Eggs are easy to prepare in a variety of ways, they have a long refrigerator shelf life, they are relatively inexpensive, and they taste good.

The guests dressed in casual smart outfits; the millennials, young couples with children, hipsters and some youngat-heart tourists all seem SO content with the breakfast buffet and the impeccable service. SoSPA Resort sojourn and spa treatment is a must. SoSPA located next to the 'quiet' swimming pool. Khun Duangrat, wellbeing manager, and her team provides outstanding service. Ambiance of lemongrass scent in the air and the therapists, the masseuses are attentive “not too hard not too soft”. After my SO soothing and relaxing massage treatment I am laying down in a star glittering 'cave' while sipping warm herbal tea. The stress and workinduced low back pain and neck pain has completely vanished. I am taking a nap.

Late lunch (dejeuner) now by the 'family' pool next to White Oven. Our degustation menu: Thai classic Larb Moo Thod (Spicy pork balls, fresh mint and spicy mayonnaise). Not too spicy, though. The sharing menu includes my favorite Thai Halal dish Massaman Gai (Spiced chicken curry, peanuts, onion, potato and coconut foam).

In the afternoon we meet the Argentinean General Manager Pablo Barruti and the Bangkok-based Swedish-Thai Cluster Director of Marketing and Communications Sebastian Solasachinda, part of the young and dynamic SO Sofitel Hua Hin team.

This “dream team” provided us a chilled-out resort experience where nature, design, gastronomy and flawless service come together to create a luxurious, playful retreat.

Property Thailand Real Estate Performance Report 2016 Having worked with the Thailand Property Awards for many years, and having written for Property Report Asia, I was recently asked to compose an article titled “Property Report End of Year Round Up – Thailand.”

Pattaya Today readers may be interested in some of my observations, to wit…

How has the Thai real estate sector performed in 2016?

Real estate overall has not gained much momentum this year, nor does the weak economy augur much support in the short term.

Over the last two years, demand for low-end properties has declined nationally, while in Bangkok, investors and end-users continue to pursue high- and luxury-end properties.

What were the plusses and minuses?

Ba n g k o k’s c o n d o m i n i u m market was definitely in the plus category as new launches in the third quarter reached the highest levels in a year. The nation’s luxury real estate market continues to be a sound and secure investment.

In the minus column I would include the meager 3.2 per cent year-on-year GDP growth in the first quarter of 2016; Thailand underperformed most of its ASEAN neighbors. Beyond which, our sluggish economy has reduced investor and consumer confidence levels.

Do you foresee market changes in the immediate future?

Even with the IMF forecasting that the Thai economy will only expand by 3 percent in 2016 and 3.2 percent in 2017, many developers are poised to launch new developments. However, I think the real estate market overall will err on the side of caution well into next year. This of course will not affect the Bangkok luxury property market which will continue its robust sales and take-up rates of up to 75 percent.

What factors have contributed to the market performing as it has?

High household debt is the

leading cause of today’s poor market performance. Thailand is Asia’s highest consumer debt nation, with household debt rising from 60 to 85 percent of national income over the past five years. As well the latest 2016 Q3 reports show credit card NPLs are the highest in 11 years.

As well, agricultural products’ low prices have had a major impact on consumers’ purchasing power.

The combination of declining farm incomes and higher debt are discouraging overall consumer confidence.

How will the property market be affected by the King’s death and the altered political climate?

Needless to say, the slow recovery in real estate is made even more challenging with the passing of Thailand’s beloved King. The mourning period by its very nature lends a somber and somewhat uncertain air to life in general, which affects all areas of business including the real estate sector.

How are prices and rental yields? What kind of returns can an investor expect in the luxury end of the market?

From 2015 into the first half of 2016, prices and rental yields in the resort areas of Phuket, Hua Hin, the Eastern Seaboard, etc. have been challenged by slow resales against mounting supplies of new construction. Together these factors have given way to competitive sales pricing and lower rental yields.

Bangkok’s properties also have faced slow to inactive demand at the lower end of the market.

But in the Bangkok luxury market, this has not been the case.

Prices continue to climb, with starting prices of 300,000-plus baht per square meter selling well.

Bangkok’s newest “Ultra Luxury” landmark (appropriately named ICON SIAM Mandarin Oriental Residence) are going for 350,000 baht psm; also doing very well.

Topping that is another ultraluxury condominium project-Sansiri’s planned 98 Wireless; one of the city’s most expensive properties with units averaging 550,000 baht psm.

purported to be reasonably high according to most property pundits, but an investment in a well-located condominium can produce high yields in both capital gains and rental income.

Bangkok’s CBD areas lowmid, mid- and high-end market categories over the past couple years have offered as much as 7 percent average rental yields, with special hot-spot enclaves such as the Thonglor area easily producing rental yields of 8 percent and higher with capital gains of 10 percent or more. Impressive returns when you consider both the world economic situation coupled with Thailand’s sluggish economy and real estate in general.

What trends do you see in the market? Who is buying and what sort of inventory is coming online?

In the resort areas of Phuket, Hua Hin, the Eastern Seaboard, etc., smaller condominium units and mid-ranged house pricing will continue with the exception of Hua Hin where you will also find healthy growth in luxury and ultra-luxury properties.

Buyer demographics remain largely Thais; domestic consumption accounts for up to 80 percent of property purchases in Bangkok alone. Among foreigners buying properties, the majority are cash buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

Although Thailand’s real estate developers and brokers are well poised to sell to the Chinese, their marketing is still primarily focused on major western cities--seeking investment purchases. However, most in the industry point to strong momentum from Chinese buyers, who are expected to buy in even greater numbers in the coming years, perhaps to levels surpassing those Russians in the market just a few years ago.

Can you offer any advice on how to invest smartly in Thailand?

Across the board, even during a sluggish market, Thai real estate continues to be rated as one of the most reliable growth markets in the world. Property prices (including vacant land) have displayed continued growth year on year, across pretty much all sectors of the property market.

Purchasing properties in good locations within Bangkok’s CBD district and close to the BTS and MRT lines is a sure bet for high rental yields and ROI, particularly in the Thonglor area.

Southeast Asia's booming tourism trade has experienced a new twist with a rising segment of second generation upmarket hostels now attracting a wider demographic. With a market size of over 1,200 properties and nearly 52,000 beds, the new and improved product is turning the heads of traditional hotels.

According to a report on Hotel Market Trends in Southeast Asia by leading hospitality consulting group C9 Hotelworks, there was an explosive

Hostels are also set to take advantage of Asia's lowcost airline carrier trajectory in a significant way," added Barnett.

Viewing C9's research, it soon becomes evident that a different

42 percent surge in new beds coming online in the 'flashpacker' category between 2015 and the third quarter of this year. Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam are now the top three players in the region, with Indonesia narrowing the margin with year-onyear growth of 73 percent.

Speaking about this evolving new accommodation space, C9's Managing Director Bill Barnett said: "Hostels are unlike hotels as average rates are calculated on a per bed basis, compared to hotels which use a per room rate. Our research across Southeast Asia shows that if comparing the two accommodation models side by side, the average room rates in newer hostel properties are matching or exceeding those in the more established budget hotel tier."

What has surprised many analysts is the growth in upscale hostel properties that now also offer

business model works in city and non-city locations. Although the market average is 4.1 beds per room, this number shoots up in urban locations like Singapore where the average is just over six beds per room.

Land prices in urban locations remain a significant factor, although unlike the more inflexible institutional approach to branded budget hotels; hostels can easily adapt to retro-fits and re-purposed real estate, hence an increasing number of groups are now developing a critical mass of properties.

Summing up the sector, Bill Barnett said: "In Europe chains such as Generator and Meininger have attracted institutional investment to spur expansion, and we are already seeing private equity players in Southeast Asia start to chase the trail of what is arguably the region's most exciting travel space."

GUEST SPEAKERS HELP GIS STUDENTS

Instead of weekly PSHE lessons, there was one ‘collapsed morning’ students in Years 7 to 9, where a series of topics were covered in detail.

These included lots of group work, discussions, and a guest speaker from the Camillian Centre in Ban Chang, which cares for children and adults with HIV/AIDS. Other issues tackled included dealing with bullying and making friends. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is a part of the curriculum at GIS. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

Boys! Reading is not just for school

40 japanese students from National Institute of Technology, Ishikawa College visit Thailand Assoc. Prof. Komson Maleesee, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) together with Assoc.

Prof. Jaruwat Charoensuk, head of Mechanical Engineering Department; welcomed Prof. Nobutaka Ineda and 40 Japanese students from National Institute of Technology, Ishikawa College (NITIC), on their visit to Thailand. Both KMITL and NITIC’s students joined academic activities on new technological study and research including planning for mutual activities continuously every year for better quality life and sustainable economy.

After academic session, KMITL students prepared special menu of learning for their Japanese friends and let them enjoy DIY Somtam

cooking by themselves. It worked out deliciously and

healthily. Somtam became a favourite dish for everyone.

Teaching has provided me with many great memories over the years, although a fairly recent occasion sticks in my mind. A parent came to me one morning and shook me by the hand and thanked me, in his own words, “for getting my son reading”. The boy’s father went on to explain how his son had previously spent most of his time playing on the X-Box at home, but now had largely shunned it in favour of reading a series of books he was borrowing from the school library.

Although it was obviously nice to receive the gratitude of a parent, I had to remind myself that it was the responsibility of every teacher to try and encourage those in their charge to read as often as possible. Yet it was invigorating to discover that this boy, quite a challenging student if the truth be told, had undergone quite a dramatic change in his outlook – he had discovered the pleasure of reading for one’s own enjoyment.

The case of this student made me think back to my own schooldays. Now, I have always enjoyed reading since I was in primary school, but when I look back I was much the exception. Most of my friends spent their formative years’only reading under duress during school hours, and were very unlikely to ever pick up a book once they left the classroom. In contrast, I got great enjoyment from reading and spent much of my free time with my ‘head stuck in a book’. Now, I should like to apologise if this article is beginning to sound a little autobiographical but there is a serious issue here –that boys rarely care to read after the school day ends.

Trying to get boys interested in reading is obviously not a new problem

for those tasked with educating children, but when you consider that probably only about 1 in every 4 boys reads outside of the classroom every day, it is definitely something that deserves our continued attention. It has been reported that in the UK many boys are falling behind in expected literacy levels compared to girls, with a gap of 11 percentage points at age 5 and continuing to hover around this figure right through secondary school. And we shouldn’t be complacent that this is merely a UK problem as a growing number of international studies suggest that girls consistently do better in reading than boys in all OECD countries.

So what can we do to encourage boys to read more?

Well there is no single solution to turning underachieving or unmotivated boys into avid readers although it sounds like common sense that in order to stimulate an interest in reading more access to contemporary

and attractive texts are vital.

Consequently, what might have interested me when I was young may well have little relevance to a 10-year-old boy today, so it is vital we, as teachers (and parents), enquire about and flatter his interests; there is no greater motivation for a boy to develop his own reader identity than to want to find out about some particular topic or story that interests him. The added fact that various reports suggest that increased levels of literacy are reflected in a student’s command of grammar and composition skills makes this even more imperative to improve overall standards.

Encouraging boys to read more is therefore a win-win situation, and subsequently, reading for pleasure should always be viewed as an essential component in a school’s teaching and learning strategy.

This & That Premature burial by your own brother Fall of the House of Usher is no gorefest

In 1960, low budget film maker Roger Corman lobbied the bigwigs at American International Pictures (AIP) to give him US$200,000 to fund a movie based on the famous short story by Edgar Allan Poe. There had been a rush of cheap horror pictures before by AIP, but this movie was to break new ground: it would be entirely in colour and there would be a big star to pull in the crowds.

At first Samuel Arkoff of AIP refused to be drawn in. He demanded to know who would play the monster. Of course there is no monster – only the

sickly and demented Roderick Usher played by Vincent Price – but Arkoff finally agreed when Corman convinced him that the house itself was the monster in this picture. “Oh, I get it,” said Arkoff, “You mean the house goes around murdering people.

Right.”

Poe’s short story sets the scene very well in the introduction. “During the whole of the dull, dark and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract

of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.”

Bringing the short story to the screen was no easy matter. It had been done before as a silent film and it has been done several times since the Corman production. Poe wrote in the ornate literary style of the nineteenth century and there are only three main characters in the plot.

There is very little action, except at the end when the house collapses in flames, so it’s no wonder that scriptwriter Richard Matheson had to make many revisions from the story to give the film a mass movie appeal.

Vincent Price, no stranger to horror pics by the 1960s, plays the head of the Usher household of two, the other being his sister Madeline played by Myrna Fahey. They live in an old decaying mansion and Usher himself suffers from a morbid affliction of the senses. Thus he can hear the sound of rats scratching behind a stone door and can’t eat anything except the most pallid mash lest his taste buds explode.

He can’t bear sunlight and has to cover his ears in agony whenever a door bolt is slid.

The batty couple would no doubt have lived out their lonely existence until death do them part, but Madeline has a

How the two actually met and fell in love some time previously in Boston is not something we are told, but perhaps it doesn’t matter. Roderick can’t stand the idea of his sister Madeline getting married – undertones of incest here but understated on purpose – and tries to ban the suitor from the house by having chandeliers fall all around him and trying to scare him witless.

But the ploy doesn’t work and the suitor remains defiant he wants the girl of his dreams.

Eventually the brother is driven to bury his sister alive, whilst she is in a cataleptic trance, simply to prevent her marrying Philip. But she has the strength of ten people, an Usher trait, and manages to claw her way out of the coffin. In the finale, both brother and sister die in the fire which engulfs the mansion whilst Philip escapes by the skin of his teeth.

The movie is no gorefest and the horror, such as it is, lies in the gruesome thought of being buried alive. This theme was done to death – excuse the pun – by Corman in several other movies of the 1960s, particularly in The Pit and the Pendulum and The Premature Burial.

What saves The Fall of the

House of Usher is the brilliance of Vincent Price’s acting and his ability to make the audience believe every line.

Sam Arkoff’s investment of US$200,000, more money than he had ever gambled before, paid off handsomely and Corman went on to make

a further seven adaptations of Poe’s short stories for American International.

The DVD edition is available from Amazon and has a useful director’s commentary in which Corman covers the film’s politics at the studio as well as the actual making.

Just the thing for a Friday evening when there’s nothing much on the telly.

A longish trip to the course was rewarded with it being a promotional Sports Day with a green fee package including a buggy at an affordable price. The weather was excellent but the rains the night before kept buggies on the pathways, much to the disappointment of those who thought there was going to be little walking. Top spot on the podium went to Keith Norman who edged out Neil Carter on a similar score by having 23 on the back nine to Neil’s 22.

The short holes proved difficult with only two of the four won. Today was also the last day of our golfer-of-the-month competition, and neither Tony Robbins nor Jimmy Carr was able to improve their placings in this final game, which gave Jimmy the trophy. Everyone enjoyed the complimentary drinks that evening.

Confusion rains supreme as Colm comes thru

Eastern Star GC Seventeen starters gathered today at headquarters anticipating the day’s challenges.

Unfortunately things did not go that way; a mix up at the first tee saw a bit of confusion with 10 players being sent off before the second bus arrived. So unfortunately it was a split field.

Weather was quite warm with a cool breeze affording some welcome relief. Rain was threatening for the latter part of the day The greens were in ordinary condition, and had only been sanded recently. Not up to me but 19,000 baht for green fee, cart and caddy was a little over the top considering the condition of the course. We played from the white tees!

Phoenix Golf Club It was twenty four golfers made their way to Phoenix Golf Club, one of the closest golf courses to Pattaya for our game today.

With a late tee off time (10:40 am) it was just as well we were not too far from home and were able to be back at the Growling Swan bar for ice cold refreshers well before 5 pm.

Most of us agreed that the course presented fairly well, despite numerous greens having patchwork quilt style repairs.

Playing off the white markers on the Ocean and Lake Nines, on a fine and sunny, stiff breeze day, only two golfers bettered their handicaps, which indicate the difficulties that the majority tried to cope with.

Hackster tried to get odds with his playing partners guessing the colour of his caddie’s undies before teeing off. Turns out he sussed out her favorite coloured lace ware the night before.

Numerous “airies” were reported from many groups and normally one would expect free drinks from such indiscretions! Sadly, this unwritten rule seems to have abated over the years however, our good friend Niall Stuart rang the bell and charged everyone’s glasses as a goodwill gesture for his imminent departure to work overseas again. Travel safe, Niall, and we look forward to your speedy return.

The winner today in A grade was Gary Bright who won on a count back from Steady Eddie (Walter Baechli) both with 38 points. Paul (guess my caddie's undie colour) Hack took out third place.

B grade was won by Glenn Smith with a good score of 35 points followed by Steve Blazsanyik with Scott Baumgarton coming in third.

Our host Peter Grey (known for his ability to wait for silence when he speaks, as he should do) was presented with an eloquent speech and a large quite sign akin to the wands seen held up greenside at major golf tournaments, by Ian Parry. Needless to say it was waved vigorously during presentations.

Peter welcomed friends of Kevin Waycott from West Australia Wes Rado, Jayson Moylan, Mark Rossiter, Scott Baumgarten, Mike Quill, Neil Herd and Glen Reeves. They were thanked for passing the hat around (amongst themselves) and contributing to D-For. We also welcomed back Gary Bright, Paul Simmons, JC Lhoste and new comer Stephen Blazsanyik.

We bid a fond farewell to Niall Stuart and Ian Parry, both leaving us for what we would hope to be a short time!

Niall paraded D-for, who was the lucky recipient of many more baht, compliments of the aforementioned and also “Steady Eddy” (Walter Baechli) who seldom gets back for presentations but regularly insists that if he wins all winnings go to D-For. Pat yourself on the back, Walter.

Another kind donor was today’s B grade Results: second place getter Steve Blazsanyik. Steve was A Grade 0 – 15 Handicaps unable to attend presentations and his winnings 1st – Gary Bright (11) 38 Points 2nd – Walter Baechli (15) 38 Points were given to his playing partner and friend Ian 3rd – Paul Hack (13) 35 Points Parry. Ian anticipated that Steve would want D-for to benefit, so thank you, Steve, or Ian, as the case may be?

Following presentations, Peter Grey asked all to tuck in to the free hot meal that he provides each Thursday, which is appreciated by all who partake.

Local Sports Marky makes his mark!

by Steve Ellison Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Is it high season yet? It sure seems like it as we welcome back loads of old friends this time of year.

The courses are getting busier and we are adding Friday to our Steak Night schedule in addition to our regular Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Green Valley is in great shape again and the lads had a perfect round of golf. Visiting us from Blighty, Terry Pettitt carved 39 points out there today, usually enough for the win but today a couple of guys had other ideas.

Andy Makara is a Darkside regular at our Green Valley Mondays and knows the course well.

His round of 40 points was a great one. Mark Wood has been a regular as well, and he seems to occupy the podium more than most. Marky continues his consistently fine golf with a very impressive 42 on the card! Speaking of consistent, that Smedley chap was our Caddy Smile near pin winner…again! Yes, he got the birdie as well and a free drink from TGC. Results: 1st – MarkWood (9) 42 points 2nd– Andy Makara (28) 40 points 3rd – Terry Pettitt (15) 39 points Pattavia Century– Stableford – White Tees Everyone looks forward to playing this course.

For the newbie to Pattaya golf, Pattavia Century is the reincarnation of Chonburi Century. It was bought by Chang breweries about four years ago, closed for a year and reopened with huge improvements to the course and a new clubhouse.

We have always supported Pattavia as seeing this

commitment to Pattaya golf by Chang is most appreciated.

A couple of ties headlined the scoring today so let’s start with the tie for third. There’s that Scotsman again as Mark Wood turns in another fine round of 36 to tie with last month’s medal winner Zed Belogavec. Hey, Zed, your shirt is ready!

Up another rung on the ladder is our own Capt. Phil with 38 points, his best in a while.

Another 38 was recorded by Frank Tordeur, our Belgian buddy who is a regular visitor to our sleepy little fishing village. Frank and Phil share the win, but the course would not allow any of the lads to even land on the par-3 17th hole green…so no near pin today!

Other than that, the course was in good nick. The 1,750 PSC price is fantastic for the low season, and that includes buggy as well. If you are still not a Pattaya Sports Club member, the discount at Silky Oaks alone will pay for your first year membership cost!

This is an interesting golf course and has two of the most talked about par-3’s in town, one straight up hill and the other just an 85 yard target that has trouble on both sides. For me, the

Bunker Boys golf report Mountain Shadow (blue tees) Medal A good turnout with two flights at a course that has blossomed with all the rain. Light rain persisted for most of our game. On the upside, it kept everything cool. The greens were good and ran true while the fairways had good ground coverage. The bunkers were carefully trimmed around the perimeter but, as is becoming an issue with this course, the bunkers themselves needed more care. It is frustrating to see staff trimming around a bunker when weeds are growing in the bunkers.

Keith Norman started slowly but had a good back nine, just failing to catch the leaders with 34 points. The star of the day was the Old Silver Fox, P J Redmond, relishing the advantages of the silver fees, he collected two near pins and romped home in B Division with a fine 39 points. Ross Schiffke was again on the podium taking second with 35 points and Tore Eliasen third with 30 points.

Crystal Bay To all on a side note: Mike Gosden is on the mend and hopefully will be released from hospital in the not too distant future. “Good Luck, Mike.”

Two buses and a few cars prepared for the journey to Crystal Bay GC. It was to be 19 golfers set to make names for themselves at this course that is very popular with the Growling Swan.

The weather was on the threatening side with the prospect of rain hitting at any moment. We didn’t cope with rain till we had actually left the club house to head home. Conditions were good and the course was in great nick with the greens playing fast but true. We played C and A nines, in that order (A nine was used for the count-backs) from the yellow tees as chosen by the captain of the day, Fred Dineley. Rumor has it he wanted to play from the red tees but he forgot to pack a dress!

Scores were quite good as you would expect playing from the front tees. With only one division, it was Colm Mullen who finished with a good score of 40 points from his 26 hcp. This made it two for two for Colm, now pressure is on to make it a hat trick and maybe go on to tie with Sal Brizzi’s four for four. No pressure, Colm. Second, third and fourth were all to be sorted out by the count back system. Winning the count back and taking out second was Rudy Regenass; Bill McGarvie came in third with Neil Harvey taking fourth place.

An interesting note: these guys were followed by three golfers on 37, two golfers on 36 and three golfers on 35. Not bad at all!

Bowls The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Sundays at 10 am for open grass bowling at The Retreat. The cost, including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch, is less than 400 baht. Great value for a day out.

Gez Williams was able to hold Tony Scambler at bay, beating him by one shot.

Tony’s game relied heavily on his chipping and putting, and Jimmy Carr--who was cut two shots--still managed to finish well. Tony Robbins just missed out on third. He felt robbed when an excellent chip on the fifth hole hit a passing dog as the ball was heading close to the pin; that fluke cost him two shots. Gerry Cooney easily won the B flight beating Eddie Kelly by two and Ross Schiffke by three. Eddie is wondering what he needs to pull out of the bag to win after two second-place finishes; Ross was disappointed with third after his two wins.

Near Pins: P J Redmond 2, Dave Ashman and Gerry Cooney Khao Kheow Always a pleasure to play at Khao Kheow where the course was beautifully presented and the weather was excellent. Not a hint of rain for a change. It was a case of the same old faces in the top places. We welcomed back Neil Carter after his recent altercation with a truck and it didn’t seem to affect him as he shot an excellent 36 points. However, that was not enough to beat Gez Williams who, after an average front nine, peeled off five pars in a row on the back nine to win with 37points. Third place was closely fought with Keith Norman again finishing strong, holding off Tony Robbins and Gordon Melia to win on a count back with 34 points.

B grade was all Ross Schiffke (Mr. Handicapper) again celebrating his wedding with 38 points and easily winning over Mike Brett’s 34 points and a surprised Ken Davison with 33 points. Certainly it was Gez Williams week with two firsts and a second, closely followed by Ross Schiffke with a first, a second and a third.

You & Your Pets

Ill-matched with your pet?

If you’ve been diagnosed with a pet allergy, your doctor probably advised you to get rid of your pet.

But is such a drastic step necessary?

Not always.

Countless pet owners suffer from a realm of maladies ranging from red, itchy, watery eyes and nose to sneezing and coughing; from scratchy or sore throat and itchy skin to difficulty breathing.

The culprit is allergen.

The most common pet allergens are in their dander (scales of old skin that are constantly shed by an animal), saliva, urine and sebaceous cells. Touching or inhaling allergens leads to reactions in allergic individuals.

People usually are allergic to several things: dust mites, molds, pollens. So consider eliminating those allergens before eliminating Fluffy.

Other steps you can take include preventing your pet from entering your bedroom. That will help ensure a good night’s sleep free of allergens.

You might also consider using

hypoallergenic bedding and pillow materials.

In the bedroom and throughout your home, do your best to limit fabrics. Drapes, rugs and upholstery collect allergens. Also, vacuum frequently, preferably using a high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter or a disposable electrostatic bag, and dust everything daily, including walls.

It will also help if you use anti-allergen room sprays to deactivate allergens, rendering them harmless. If possible, install an air purifier fitted with an HEPA filter.

To help decontaminate your pet, brush or comb him frequently, and bathe him at least once a week with a shampoo that won't dry out his skin. Also, wipe him with a product formulated to prevent dander from building up and flaking off. Ask your vet to suggest one that is safe.

This lovely pair have been with us for a while now. Both are friendly and - although they are not brother and sister - they are soul mates. So thought it would be nice to re-home them together if possible.

This lovely brother and sister combination would love to go to a home together if at all possible. They are both very loving and playful, although they can be a little shy with strangers at first. But once they get to know you they are fine.

This cute pair were rescued from a gang of nasty Soi dogs after being dumped in the grounds of a Jomtien apartment complex. They are very cute, litter trained and of course spend most of their time play, play playing.

Roundworms are common parasites in dogs and cats. They cause diarrhea and vomiting, and may lead to a serious illness. But they're a threat to people, too.

An infected pet can spread the tiny eggs in soil or sand. Kids may swallow the eggs when they put dirty fingers in their mouths. When the worms hatch inside people, they can cause blindness and other tissue damage. Ask your vet about regular deworming for your pet.
