10-year visa questions
The Thai Cabinet has now agreed to offer a 10-year expat visa for aliens over the age of 50, but has left the allimportant details to be worked out by the Interior Ministry. The new visa in reality will be for five years, extendable by another five years if the paperwork is still in order. However, successful applicants will still need to report their address every 90 days unless they leave the country before the end of the three months’ reporting period. Pattaya Today has held informal meetings with immigration staff, but stresses that the detail will likely not become absolutely clear for several months prior to implementation. It is known that the new visa will require proof of an overseas income of at least 100,000 baht monthly, or a Thai bank balance of at least three million baht, plus health insurance cover which pays out at least 10,000 US dollars. Although not specified, it is likely that other required documentation will be proof of address, such as a yellow book (tibean bahn), or ownership of a condominium unit or a rental agreement. It is not clear whether the new visa will include a reentry provision or whether this must be obtained separately as at present. Nor has it been stated whether the current one-year, renewable retirement visa will continue in its present form; we believe that it will. It is rare in Thai immigration history for an established
visa to be withdrawn unless a very similar alternative is introduced. A big question mark hangs over how applicants will prove they have a foreign income of at least 100,000 baht monthly. At present, aliens applying for the one-year retirement option can request a letter from their embassy “confirming” their income of at least 65,000 baht monthly. However, it is well known that most embassies do not check the veracity of the claims of their nationals and some do not ask to see any documentation, relying on an affidavit in front of an officer. It has been suggested
that immigration staff may need to see the applicant’s home bank book data in connection with the 10-year visa. An alternative to the 100,000 baht a month income threshold is to have three million baht in a Thai bank account. In practice, the sum would need to be higher as the cabinet resolution apparently specified that the amount must not fall below that amount in the first year of the life of the visa. There is also a requirement to show after five years that at least half of the three million baht has been spent in Thailand. Continued on page 4

News 10-year visa questions Continued from page 1
This suggests that the visa holder will need to keep various bills including medical treatment expenses, and accommodation charges as well as major shopping receipts. It is not even clear which banks qualify for holding the cash or what sort of account is required. Moreover, there could be a rule stating how long the money needs to be in Thailand prior to the submission of the application. There are even bigger question marks over the requirement to have medical insurance. The floor of 10,000 US dollars, or equivalent, seems a small amount given that most surgical procedures in Thailand are much more expensive than that. Moreover, insurers are reluctant to cover ageing men and women, particularly over 70, and frequently terminate the cover or raise the premiums. Some rich foreigners may have preexisting conditions which
would create exclusion clauses in any document but may have their own private resources to cover hefty bills in Thai private sector hospitals. It is not clear why the drafters of the initial document to be considered by the Thai Cabinet would insist on proof of very modest insurance. An immigration source said this clause might well be dropped at the review stage. Amongst other queries yet to be resolved are whether the foreign spouse of a successful applicant could apply for the same facility, especially if he/she did not have a separate income and was under 50 years of age. Nor is it yet explained whether an initial non-immigrant visa is needed before application for the 10 year visa is made. All in all, the idea of a 10-year visa - not to be confused with the 20 year Elite Card, by the way - is a welcome one and will be looked at closely by the wealthier end of the older expat market. But the devil is in the details. It is always so.

Our Community A ride through the countryside The inaugural Father Ray Charity Bike Ride took place recently on a balmy Sunday morning. The sun was barely up when several hundred cycling enthusiasts, young and old, Thai and foreign, gathered at the Father Ray Children’s Home in Nongprue to take part in a 30 kilometer ride through the countryside. The event was organised to raise much needed funds for the Education Fund at the Father Ray Foundation, Pattaya’s largest charitable organization which today cares for and educates 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities. As the sun rose and the crowds gathered, the chefs from the Chef’s Association of Pattaya were on hand to provide a healthy pre-ride breakfast and also a post-ride brunch, and as usual the food they cooked was delicious. Mai Chaiyanit, mayor of Nongprue, together with former MP, Poramet Ngampichet, as well as Father Peter and Father Michael from the Father Ray Foundation, welcomed the gathered riders, wishing them luck, offering words of encouragement and also gave a blessing. Prior to the start of the ride, the cyclists, mostly all dressed in black, stood in silence to remember and to pay their respects to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol. The ride started before it
got too hot and as the riders departed the sun was shining and there was a slight breeze. Leaving the Children’s Home they cycled past the elephants eating breakfast at the nearby Elephant Village, past fields of fruits and vegetables, around the nearby lake and along the dusty lanes until they returned to the Home where they

received a small memento. For all those people who live in Pattaya and never venture over to the ‘dark side’, you are only a short distance from the beautiful countryside; it’s a shame not to take advantage of it. More than 300,000 baht was raised during the event, and it is never too early to start training for next year’s ride.
Amari Pattaya Organises CSR Activity for Students Amari Pattaya organised the “First Step Activity” to provide educational opportunities for students at the Banglamung Home For Boys. This activity was a part of Amari Pattaya’s CSR project aimed at educating students in the Pattaya area in order to help them prepare for their future careers by gaining practical experience outside the classroom and gaining knowledge of the hotel industry in a real-world professional environment. The training modules included a hotel inspection and an introduction to the operation of a hotel. Later, in a cooking class led by Chef Wongduan Dowreuang at Mantra Restaurant & Bar, the students successfully learned how to cook pizza and had lunch together. The students enjoyed the cooking workshop and learning about the hotel.
Amari Pattaya believe that they can inspire younger generations to grow up to have a bright, shining future.

This annual campaign is organised by the Father Ray Foundation to raise food to feed the 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities currently in its care.
Your donation will ensure the blind students, the children with special needs and the vocational students with disabilities will have enough food so they can concentrate on their studies. It will also help feed the toddlers who attend the Father Ray Day Care Center and who receive a nutritious breakfast on arrival.
From December 3 to 5 the children and students from the Foundation will be at supermarkets throughout the city and you can also donate at most 7-Eleven stores in Pattaya, and all they ask is that you add an extra bag of rice to your shopping basket and donate it to the children. All cash collected in donation boxes will be used to purchase food for the children.
Your donation will also mean the residents of the Father Ray Children’s Home, Children’s Village and the Drop-In Center never go to bed feeling hungry. Each year the Father Ray Foundation uses 75,000 kgs of rice, but this year they also need cooking oil, salt, sugar, fish sauce, canned fish and dried noodles. by Mick & Di Barker
If you haven’t already visited Centara Grand Mirage – be prepared to be impressed! This extraordinary hotel is Pattaya’s first unique, themed hotel and it is a remarkable feat of architectural engineering and innovative design concepts. The hotel is created as two soaring 18-storey towers connected by sky bridges and set on the fine sands of Wong Amat Beach. The exterior boasts its own jungle, water park, monsoon island, river, waterfalls, water sports, boating, fishing and kayaking, while the interior décor is a dwarfing experience of towering wooden columns, rock-clad walls and colossal contemporary works of art. The design is truly titanic in its conception. Centara Grand Mirage prides itself on its coterie of speciality restaurants and bars. Flames is a beachfront BBQ and grill, Coast a trendy Beach Bar & Grill, Waves hits the cocktail scene, Ginger and Lime has a Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese menu, while Acqua serves contemporary Italian cuisine. However, Mick and I had been invited to Oasis, the resort’s all-day dining outlet. This restaurant is huge, having just undergone a major renovation that has increased the seating by almost 100 and it now boasts 288 outdoor seats with 192 inside. Ditto the menu – it’s huge – with eight pages of imaginative food items to satisfy the hungriest during its 17-hour opening times. Government investment is at an all time high – a sign of the importance of marine tourism to the national economy – while the record-setting 5th edition of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show was held to boost marine tourism in the Gulf of Thailand and showcase Thailand's marine industry to the world. With an expanded line-up of 28 boats in-the-water and more onshore, more than 6,000 visitors experienced a world-class marine and lifestyle festival from November 24 to 27, 2016. Ranging from small day boats up to superyachts, the three largest boats on display at this year's show included the Monte Carlo Yachts 86, Princess 88 Motor Yacht and the largest of all – the 41-metre Ocean Emerald, which starred in the recent Hollywood movie, Point Break (2015). Sail and power, large and small (and everything in between), the show offered something for all and also included a selection of brokerage yachts. International boat brands from Europe and the USA displayed alongside the best local builds from Thailand's much revered boat building industry, a sign of the increased interest in boat ownership, and a driver of future charter market growth.
“It's very encouraging to see how the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show continues to grow each year. This year we have the largest number of boats ever on display and onshore there is diverse range of products from marine to lifestyle as well as luxury property. Over the four-day show there were lots for visitors to do and Ocean Marina is a great place for families and friends to meet and relax by the sea,” said Dr Tirachai Pipitsupaphol, managing director, Ocean Property. In honour of His Majesty late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, there was a special sailing exhibition titled “The King Rama IX’s Sailing of Exhibition” which showcased His Majesty’s sailing achievements. In addition to the impressive boat line-up, there were all manner of marine products, accessories and services, as well as charter, insurance, marine toys and gadgets, and water sports. Onshore some of Thailand's finest properties were exhibiting as well as a collection of lifestyle products and services that complement the nautical lifestyle. “Pattaya is already Thailand's domestic marine leisure playground. With the Gulf of Thailand opening up to visiting international yachts and the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show showcasing Thailand's marine industry to the world, we expect to see the region grow considerably in the coming years and underscore its billing as the “Riviera of Asia”, added Dr Tirachai.

For instance “the Big Catch” sharing plate offers half a superior Phuket lobster, grilled snow fish, tiger prawn and a leg of king crab for B.2,400 or for the meatier type a mixed grill sharing plate consists of a free-range chicken, Australian lamb chop and a chorizo sausage for B.720. Sausage lovers would be more than content with the Artisan Sausage Platter laden with grilled lamb, pork and beef sausages plus an Italian spicy version and the famous flavour-loaded Chiang Mai sausage. Chef had prepared us “Fall off the Bone” slow roasted beef short ribs accompanied by new potatoes and fresh vegetables. The succulent, juicy
meat (which had been marinated for 24 hours) did indeed fall away from the bone and had been smothered in their signature mesquite wood BBQ sauce which was simply sensational. Sweet but tangy with suspicions of some intriguing ingredients (he did hint at CocaCola!), it should definitely be bottled – we’d certainly buy a dozen bottles or two. Do try this dish; it is certainly one of the standout dishes on the menu and you’ll love that BBQ sauce. For fish lovers there’s steamed snow fish, pan-seared barramundi and that everyday staple, fish and chips. We were served a fishy appetiser of seared sesame-crusted tuna loin accompanied by squares

Lots more on the menu, subs and sandwiches, 200-gram Wagyu burgers and a house surf 'n' turf special embracing half a Canadian lobster loaded with a grilled Australian sirloin steak and onion hoagies, including every Italian’s favourite, penne with Italian spicy sausage. Chef Pelle
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
AKVAVIT GRILL & BAR
Jomtien’s Swedish Kitchen
Swedish chef Pelle Petterson is the hands-on proprietor of this most convivial Jomtien restaurant and bar. His international chefery is evident from the eclectic a la carte menu to the daily and weekly set menus. He is the Scandinavian light in this kitchen ensuring that all dishes receive his Swedish touch but he also finds time to happily appear restaurant-side to chat with his guests and make informed recommendations. The striking frontage is eyecatching with a contemporary lit bar lighting the restaurant’s façade on the ground floor plus a further two levels of zone serving offering al fresco or an air-conditioned dining room. Chef Pelle’s homeland sparkles through the menu with a nod to this healthy, interesting cuisine and a wink to international fare that makes regulars and newcomers seek out these tables. Toast Skagen is an absolute classic dish and has come to symbolize elegance in Swedish food. Fresh, sweet prawns are mixed with dill mayonnaise and seasoning and either served on toast (B.195) or used as a filling, in this case in a pepper marinated salmon roll. We opted for a dish called SOS which stands for “smor, ost och sill” which basically describes the herring and other ingredients. We are huge fans of herring and the two varieties were just sensational. Accompanied by Skagen mix, egg, sour cream, chopped onion and
SOS
T-Bone Steak
boiled potatoes, it is a winner of a dish. Other classic appetisers include pink pepper marinated salmon roll, shrimp cocktail (B.325), fresh oysters and cold Norwegian salmon with Parmesan cheese and capers. Burgers are a popular choice, especially the house Akvavit burger which comes with coleslaw, dressing, aioli, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, bacon, cheese, jalapeno chilies and French fries. The planked steaks and fish are another popular option. We noted many a laden wooden board heading across the restaurant but we were here to try the new dishes so I opted for the Norwegian Halibut while Mick chose the Schnitzel Scandinavian style which came served with anchovies and capers
and a very tasty red wine sauce. The halibut was delicious, two thick fillets of the snowy white fish were accompanied by asparagus, mixed vegetables, pressed potatoes, clarified butter and a small dish of freshly grated horseradish for that final sparkle. Salmon of course is a star of Scandinavian cuisine and here it is served grilled with duchesse potatoes, hollandaise sauce and fresh vegetables. Swedish meatballs, made popular by a certain furniture store, appear on the menu but these are Akvavit style and are served in a creamy gravy with mashed potatoes and lingonberries. For meatier types, the classic dish “elephant ear” should not be overlooked.
Norwegian Halibut
It’s a very large and very thin beef slice flavoured with butter and accompanied by a light Merlot sauce and French fries. Along with all this, the Australian and Argentinean steaks come highly recommended: the classic Chateaubriand Provencale is a whole fillet weighing in at 500 grams for two people to share at B.1,350. (Allow 25 minutes once ordered). There’s also a Thai menu offering 18 dishes from tom yum soup to whole fried sea bass with garlic and pepper. Recommended desserts include their lemon tart, a decadent meringue Suisse laden with whipped cream and ice cream plus apple pie and that chocolate dream of lava cake. Serving Swedish cuisine with a twist, Akvavit successfully gives us a peep into this interesting cuisine. Pelle is always on hand to help and recommend before darting back into the kitchen to direct his chefs. Their weekend buffet is also proving
a great success. From 12 noon to 4 pm for only B.335 you can take your fill of Swedish meatballs in cream sauce, chicken fajitas, roast beef, pastas, Pytt Bellman (a sort of Swedish hash), grilled honey ham, BBQ ribs and much more. The “After Beach” Happy Hour runs from 3 till 6 pm with lots of imbibing bargains to be had. If it’s just a bar snack you fancy then you’re in for a treat with a creative list of snacks ranging from fried glazed chicken wings with blue cheese dressing (B.170), deepfried onion rings, sushi plates from B.290 plus platters of cold cuts and cheeses. So many reasons to visit this gastro-bar restaurant – come here for a taste of international cuisine with Chef Pelle’s inimitable Swedish twist. Catering service available. of the skin, while gently erasing signs of aging in the top layer of skin. This exceptional laser treatment selectively delivers amplified pulses of light to the dermis, which causes injury, followed by subsequent repair and stimulation of the existing collagen. Since the epidermis is rarely damaged by this treatment, there are no visible signs that the skin is being rejuvenated as there is with other traditional ablative procedures. The laser rejuvenation can reduce the signs of aging and sun damage, including fine wrinkles, superficial acne scars, enlarged pores, freckles and uneven pigmentation.
Facial Laser Rejuvenation Facial laser rejuvenation with the CoolGlide ND: Yag Laser is becoming one of our clinic’s most popular cosmetic procedures. Laser rejuvenation is non-ablative treatment that works to repair collagen in the dermis, or deepest layer
Microdermabrasion It uses a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer. This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage, and stretch marks. It improves age spots and black heads, exfoliates your skin, resulting in a refreshed appearance. It helps thicken your collagen, which results in a youngerlooking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that’s abundant when you’re a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Collagen production declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin.

Krabi Krabong
by Rory Coughlan
Krabi Krabong is a weapon-based martial art originating in Thailand. It is an art of defending oneself through the use of a curved sword. Krabi Krabong’s philosophy came to life when Siam warriors fought for the welfare of Thailand during the Burmese war. The art makes use of weapons most of the time but this martial art also uses kicking and empty-hand techniques to defeat an opponent using the art Muay Boran. Warriors fought for survival, thus combat techniques at the time were especially deadly, utilizing spears, swords, knives and arrows. The system's name refers to its main weapons, namely the curved sword (krabi) and staff (krabong). Typically, two swords are wielded as a pair. We are born to fight for survival, and that is what the philosophy of Krabi Krabong is about. It is a living martial art with underlying emotion attached to it: the fast destruction of the opponent in order to win and survive. This emotion originated from the way ancient Siam warriors defended their homeland against invaders. Therefore, the core philosophy of Krabi Krabong is to fight the opponents and to destruct their motives in the fastest, most effective manner. This entails combined efforts of the mind and to quickly create tactics that will defeat the enemy. It is due to this aspect that Krabi Krabong is highly honored and Krabi Krabong warriors are highly respected for their ferocity and fighting spirit. This Thai martial art upholds power, simplicity and speed—a perfect combination to incapacitate an opponent. “The sword was the If weapons broke for example, battle would resume using these principle weapon during the deadly unarmed techniques. Want younger-looking skin?
Can you say Garbanzo? Chickpeas are a humble bean with lots of benefits. They're full of fiber and healthy protein to help you keep full while allowing you to stay slim. They also help fend off high cholesterol and diabetes. Best of all, they're great for your skin. The ubiquitous legume, prominent in the cuisines of Italy, Greece, India, Spain and the Middle East, contains manganese, which helps your skin cells produce energy
and fight wrinkle-causing free radical damage. They also provide molybdenum, a trace mineral that assists your body to process sulphites—a commonly-found food preservative that's unkind to your skin. Also known as garbanzo and cici beans, chickpeas contain folate to help repair skin cells damaged by sun and toxins. So if you want to look younger, make garbanzo beans a regular part of your diet. Try them in humus, on salads, with pasta, or in chili. Chickpeas are not quite Botox in a bowl, but they'll do a lot to nourish your beauty from the inside-out.

South East Asia Property Awards 2016 The South East Asia Property Awards, now in its sixth very successful year, is the largest, most prestigious and certainly the most recognized industry awards event in the Asia Pacific region. As the grand finale of the prestigious series, presented by Hansgrohe and organized by PropertyGuru, Asia’s leading online property group, the event held on the 24th of last month at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore attracted more than 400 of the best known and up-and-coming names in real estate. Last year’s winners included a record being set when the Far East Organization became the first company ever to win the prestigious Best Developer (South East Asia) title twice at the glamorous black-tie ceremony after previously claiming the honor in 2011. The Far East Organization also took home Best Commercial Development for SBF Centre and The Green Mark Platinum-certified project that won the Best Green Development (South East Asia). One of last year’s highlights was when Singapore industry giant GuocoLand won the coveted Best Condominium (South East Asia) trophy for Singapore’s Garden City District 10. This year’s gala event also featured the second annual Property Report Congress--a unique two day opportunity to celebrate the region’s
established and emerging property markets by meeting industry leaders who are redefining those markets. Featured were insights from some 30 speakers including winners and judges of the Property Awards. The second evening featured the gala dinner and presentation of the property awards. Entries had been submitted by industry players as well as the general public and, once again, administered by one of the world’s largest and most respected accounting firms, BDO International, represented in Southeast Asia by Paul Ashburn. One of the most dynamic winners of the evening was when Malaysia’s Sime Darby Property collected its

first regional Best Developer (South East Asia) award, ahead of its other competing national winners from Cambodia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. According to the esteemed judges, as published in Property Report Asia Magazine, the Best Developer (South East Asia) winner is an all-rounder with a long-term commitment in the Malaysian real estate industry. “Inheriting its legacy of excellence in plantations, one of the Sime Darby Group’s core businesses, Sime Darby Property is a prominent developer with a 40-year track record of developing sustainable communities and with expertise in property development, property investment and asset management. Given its significance and constant reinvention, Sime Darby Property is certainly an integral part of developing Malaysia’s history, and now Asia Property Awards history as the 2016 Best Developer (South East Asia).” Indonesia, which led the grand final with a total of 15 nominations, finished the evening with two regional design awards for Sinar Mas Land and Intiland Development. The highlight of the events award presentations for us here in Thailand was of course MahaSamutr by PACE Development Corporation PLC, winner of both Best Villa/Housing Development (South East Asia) and Best Residential Architectural Design (South East Asia) and The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok by MQDC Magnolia Quality Development Corporation who won Best Residential Interior Design (South East Asia). That was not all for Thailand as the Siam Piwat Co Ltd’s Siam Discovery was voted Southeast Asia’s Best Commercial Development. Winning these high profile

property awards made it clear to all neighboring nations that Thailand continues to be a regional leader, producing some of the best developers, designers and achievers in the industry. The Philippines emerged with two regional winners: a Special Recognition in Sustainable Design (South East Asia) for well-known green developer ArthaLand for its Bonifacio Global City-based ArthaLand Century Pacific Tower development and Best Hotel Architectural Design (South East Asia) for the Conrad Manila by SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Following their triple victory at the Vietnam Property Awards, that country’s Deutsches Haus Ho Chi Minh City by Deutsches Haus Ho Chi Minh Stadt Ltd. continued their winning streak, with the Best Green Development (South East Asia) title. Adding another accolade to Singapore’s Chiu Teng Group was it’s being named the regional winner in a new category: Best Boutique Developer (South East Asia). From Phnom Penh to Jakarta, the South East Asia Property Awards was attended by more than 400 VIPs and senior industry figures gathered to celebrate the successes of the region’s winners after more than a year of hard work. The 2016 South East Asia Property Awards edition began with the launch of the Cambodia Property Awards in late 2015, leading up to the Indonesia Property Awards 2016 in Jakarta in October. During the entire process, nearly 190 awards have been presented to Southeast Asia’s finest real estate developers and developments in this year. The high-level Property Report Congress conference series of Asia’s industry-leading Property Report magazine was a great success. I was much honored to have acted as moderator for the Thailand panel at the Property Report Congress, and to have presented Deutsches Haus Ho Chi Minh City with the Best Green Development award. In closing the hugely successful event, Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the Asia Property Awards, said “2016 has been a momentous year for the Asia Property Awards. Since starting 11 years ago the Awards have always endeavored to reward the best in local real estate and produce credible winners with a transparent entry and judging system. We have achieved this goal by developing the most detailed and comprehensive entry system of any property awards in the world.” “Southeast Asia’s property sector has come a long way in the last decade and we are proud to have been a part of that growth,” Blackburn added. Jomtien Complex Condotel Continued from page 1/21
Bruce adds he has always been impressed by the competent and thorough management structures and the fact that virtually 100 percent of the owners pay their common area fee promptly. That is always a key sign of well-run condominiums. There are 550 units at Jomtien Complex Condo which range from studios to penthouses, all empowered by an impressive range of services. They include two restaurants, mailbox and post office facilities, laundries, a minimart, large swimming pool, a fitness centre with the latest equipment, a sauna, two tennis courts (currently undergoing resurfacing) and a host of other popular sports amenities. There are comprehensive room cleaning services on offer for owners and renters and an elected executive committee which oversees finances and all work-related performance. Not to mention comprehensive 24-hour security and ample on-site parking. "What distinguishes Jomtien Complex Condotel from so many others," explains Bruce, a Chicago-born entrepreneur, engineer and fluent Thai speaker, "is the attention to detail here. It's a five-star building in a five-star location with an ongoing commitment to improvements. At the moment, there's an elevator replacement project, a fire prevention system under renovation and an improved water-supply being implemented." He adds that the building provides comprehensive WIFI, security monitoring and cable TV offering 200 channels. A fiberoptic communications backbone is envisioned for the near future.
Apart from being exceptionally well-run, Jomtien Complex Condotel has a vision, namely to adapt and to change to the various new horizons now appertaining to the greater Pattaya area. For example, there is now a greater emphasis on family-centered residences for both tourists and long-stayers. The comprehensive facilities at Jomtien Complex Condotel, which include
a kiddy pool, ping-pong facility, etc, increasingly reflect the changing composition of the clientele in Jomtien. One recent trend too has been the growing number of Scandinavians at the Condotel who include business people and retirees as well as short-term tourists. Jomtien is now the principal development district of the greater Pattaya area and the Condotel is in a first class geographical position with its panoramic sea view. Within a few minutes' walk are dozens of high-class restaurants and food centres, beer garden pubs, department stores, discotheques and two plazas. Yet the area is much less frenetic than neighbouring Pattaya and - a big bonus many would say - no go-go style nightclubs. The opening of Jomtien Second Road has reduced traffic congestion in the immediate area by allowing through-traffic to bypass Beach Road. There is much more to come but it will take time. New arterial roads are scheduled to link the resort with both Rayong, an industrial hub in its own right, and Laem Chabang, one of the largest ports in Asia and 20th biggest in the world. A high-speed railway will eventually link the airport at U Tapao first to Jomtien and then to the metropolis. As Bruce concludes, "Jomtien Complex Condotel is in the right place at the right time: to take advantage of all the trends in superior class tourism which are now changing the face of the Eastern Seaboard."

Thailand Compensation and Benefit Trends 2016: Voluntary Turnover Rates Soar as Performance Pressure Mounts
Performance continues to drive pay-related decisions for 95.1 percent of employers in Thailand, the Total Compensation Measurement (TCM) Study and Benefit Survey 2016 reveals. The survey was conducted by Aon Hewitt, the global talent, retirement and health solutions business of Aon plc (NYSE: AON). Panuwat Benrohman, country leader, Aon Hewitt, Thailand spoke at the Thailand Total Compensation Measurement (TCM) Study and Benefits Survey 2016 Results Sharing event in Bangkok An alarming discovery is that both voluntary and involuntary turnover rates are highest among junior managers and supervisors, across all industries in Thailand. This reflects the mounting pressure on these employees to sustain their performance levels, even as they make the significant leap from individual contributors to their first managerial roles. While the average rate of variable pay (or bonus payout) versus fixed pay is set at 18 percent for both individual contributor and management level, the increase in performance expectations could impact the variable pay component for junior managers struggling with the transition. Benrohman noted, "The high turnover rate among junior managers should warn employers in Thailand to think about their compensation policies in the context of their overall talent retention strategy. While the pay for performance model has its merits, employers must also embrace their responsibility to equip junior managers as they transition from individual contributor roles. With
'better external opportunities' and 'limited growth opportunity' among the top three reasons for attrition, a focus on learning and development will help employers in Thailand build a strong leadership pipeline from within while still compensating high performers attractively." Other key findings of the Survey 2016 for Thailand include: • The average bonus rate stands at 22 percent of the annual base salary in 2016, compared to 17.62 percent in 2015. • Retail and life sciences offer 6 percent salary increase in 2016, the highest across all industries. • Travel industry has the lowest salary increase, at just 4.7 percent. • The rate of variable pay ranges from 15 percent at support level to 18 percent at individual contributor and management level, and 20 percent at executive level. • 72.2 percent of employers offer individual performance awards while 38.9 percent offer special recognition as short-term incentives to retain employees. • 43 percent of organisations provide financial wellness advisory as a benefit to employees at all levels. • Employers invest an average of 11 percent of annual base salaries on employee benefits, with medical outpatient costs making up a significant portion. The Aon Hewitt Total Compensation Measurement™ Study and Benefit Survey involves more than 715 participating organisations across 180 countries around the world. This year, there were 174 participating organisations across all key industries in Thailand.

Youth Focus Teaching Chinese in Thailand by Lei Chen As we all know, Chinese as a second language has become more and more popular in Thailand. Just as happened in Singapore and Korea several years ago, people’s enthusiasm about learning Chinese has been booming and continuously fermenting. Some analysts estimate in 5-10 years the popularity of Chinese in Thailand may be around 70-80 percent. There is a huge demand for Chinese teachers here, and many Chinese choose to come to Thailand to teach. However, can any native Chinese speaker be a good Chinese teacher? Of course not. Yes, currently Thailand needs Chinese teachers desperately, but Thailand needs only responsible, capable and dedicated Chinese teachers. Today I would like to talk about teaching Chinese in Thailand based on my two years of teaching experience in an international school in Pattaya. Firstly, a correct motivation is most important to be a good Chinese teacher. Attitude determines everything. I have seen many Chinese teachers coming to Thailand just for the experience or for getting the chance to travel around and enjoy the nice beaches. They are not serious about teaching and just want to collect easy money. As a teacher, we should be responsible for the students and the parents. We should deserve to be called “teacher”. The responsibility on our shoulders is unshakable. As a Chinese teacher, the correct motivation is to promote the Chinese language and culture to the world.
Secondly, after you have the correct attitude, getting to know the differences between teaching Chinese students and foreign students is also critical to your success. 1) Classroom management skills. Students in China have been trained to be disciplined from the very beginning; therefore, it doesn’t take much classroom management skill to teach Chinese students. Students in Thailand are totally different. They are more active and have more sense of freedom because of the school/family environment. Therefore, the biggest problem many newly arrived Chinese teachers have is how to control the class and the students. 2) Teaching native Chinese speakers is different from teaching foreign students. You have to adjust a little bit and be more patient. You have to use media language such as English or Thai to explain things. That requires you to have a good English or Thai language level, especially if you teach older students like middle school or high school. 3) Organizing more games or group activities to give the kids fun. The traditional Chinese way of teaching is not suitable for teaching students in Thailand. If you walk into a traditional Chinese class, you will see that the teacher is standing in the front talking for 50 minutes and the students busy taking notes. It’s like you pour the knowledge into the student’s’ brain and in order
to pass the exams they just need to memorise the notes and do tons of exercises. This way of teaching is quite efficient but the students do not get the chance to practice in class and they get bored. You need to organise games, group activities or competitions. In the class, the time that a teacher teaches should not be more than 40 percent and the rest of the time the students will practice and apply what they have learnt in different ways. Thirdly, teaching Chinese culture is as important as teaching the Chinese language. We should integrate Chinese culture into our daily language teaching, such as Chinese festivals, philosophy, food, kungfu, taichi, fengshui, architectures? Beijing opera and so on. Teaching Chinese culture will also benefit language learning because culture teaching can
increase their interest in Chinese and motivate the students to learn more. We all know that if you force people to do anything it’s not going to work very well. Finally, I wish that all Chinese teachers in Thailand will love and enjoy teaching here and try their best to help the students improve. As for me, every time I see students make progress I get the sense of enrichment, fulfillment and happiness. This is the teachers’ joy and I will not trade it for anything else. I found my reason for being and my social value through being a teacher. I hope all the Chinese teachers will be able to say the same now or at some point later in their teaching career. Lei Chen is a Chinese teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Royal Cliff Hotels group welcomes students of Mae Fah Luang University for educational trip
Royal Cliff Hotels Group gave a warm welcome to more than 120 students and teachers from the Faculty of Hospitality Industry Management of Mae Fah Luang University who recently visited the property. Senior members of Royal Cliff's management team from various departments including Front Office, Food and Beverage and from Pattaya
Exhibition And Convention Hall (PEACH) gave insightful lectures to help the students learn and understand the actual process of hotel management through their firsthand accounts as industry insiders. The educational trip allowed the students to explore Royal Cliff's wide ranging facilities and learn directly from the experienced staff.
Students and staff from Garden International School (GIS) held a special Remembrance Day assembly to remember those affected by armed conflict. Wearing poppies and wristbands from the Royal British Legion, students filled the Main Hall on November 11. Money raised from the sale of wristbands helps families affected by armed conflict, including those in Thailand. For the past few years, GIS
has raised more funds than any other school, organisation or company on the Eastern Seaboard. GIS Principal Dinah Hawtree led the assembly and asked students to remember the millions of people who were killed in the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts that continue today around the globe. Year 9 History students travelled to Kanchanaburi to attend a service at the main
war cemetery. Using Facebook Live, for the first time, GIS students were able to watch a live stream of the service and also the two minutes’ silence. Primary and Secondary students then read poems, and the school’s chamber choir performed a version of the famous war poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

Popular Conspiracy Theories The idea that there is a limited amount of oil in the ground to be extracted is, according to conspiracy theorists, a scam to jack up prices whilst giving governments to right to force us to sacrifice our hard-earned living standards. Globalization, they say, is about consolidation. Now that the world’s economy has become centralized through the operations of the Globalists, they will continue to say that the problem is the West’s over-consumption of fossil fuels, whilst at the same time blocking the development and integration of renewable clean technologies. Peak oil is a theory advanced by the elite to try and maintain their dominance over subject populations. Although, the imminence of world recession has subdued oil prices temporarily, the hikes are bound to begin again soon. But if we are running
out of oil so fast, then why are reserves being continually increased and production skyrocketing? In the 1980s OPEC decided to switch to a quota production system based on the size of reserves. The larger the reserves a country said it had the more it could pump. Thus this year Saudi Arabia reportedly increased its crude reserves by around 200 billion barrels. Saudi oil is secure and plentiful say officials. “These huge reserves enable the kingdom to remain a major oil producer for about 100 years, even if it raises its capacity to 15 million barrels a day.” Russia is another country that has vastly increased its reserves, even beyond those of Saudi Arabia. They would hardly do this if they believed there would not be any more oil to get hold of. Thus there is a clear contradiction between peak oil theory and
The myth of “Peak Oil” in 2011
the continual increase in oil reserves and production. New untapped oil sources are being discovered everywhere on earth. The notion that there are somehow only a few sources that the West is trying to monopolize is a complete myth, promulgated by those raking in huge profits. The price of oil remains high because the cost of oil remains so low. We are not dependent on the middle east for oil because the world’s supply is diminishing but because it’s more profitable to tap middle east supplies. This is how you make huge profits from something available in abundance. Richard Branson has even stated his own intention to set up a refinery because the price of oil is kept high whilst new sources are not being explored and new refineries not being built. “OPEC,” writes Branson, “is effectively an illegal cartel that can meet happily, nobody takes them to court. They collude to keep prices high.” It seems that every time there is some
kind of energy crisis OPEC increases production. The remarkable thing about this is that they always state they are doing it to ease prices, yet the price always shoots up as they promulgate the myth that they are throwing their last reserves into the market. The scientific evidence also flies in the face of the peak oil theory. Data going back 100 years suggests oil is abiotic, not the product of long decayed biological matter. Oil, for better or worse, is not a nonrenewable resource. Like coal and natural gas it replenishes from sources within the earth. The reality is that peak oil is just another weapon the globalists have in their arsenal to move towards a new world order where the elite gets richer and everyone else falls into line. If we continue to believe the lies, we may reach the twisted situation whereby they can justify mass starvation and global poverty on the spurious ground that “Oil has run out”. (Next issue – an answer to the conspiracy theorists).

Secrets To A Happy Marriage: 5 Things You Must Know For A Stronger, Closer Bond With Your Spouse
A happy marriage is one of life’s best pleasures. But all too often it seems that the stresses of everyday living take a toll on our most important relationship. That’s why it’s so important that we remember to work on that bond constantly, making it stronger. After all, if you aren’t working at your job, you quickly find you don’t have one; the same is true with relationships. But how can you keep a marriage strong? Here are our 5 secrets to a marriage that lasts: 1. Put Your Marriage/Partner First
3. Kiss And Hug Everyday We ’ r e n o t t a l k i n g little pecks on the cheek or quick hugs goodbye. We need to feel each other close, preferably with skin touching, to maintain our physical and mental health. Deep, longing kisses shouldn’t be saved just for foreplay – they should be a part of your every day routine! Kisses don’t have to be erotic or sexual – but when you kiss him, he should know you meant it. 4. Keep Your Memories Alive One way to keep a marriage strong is to minimize the bad things that have happened, and talk frequently about the good times. Talking together about happy times you’ve had can actually change how you think about your partner and your relationship. Next time your relationship is feeling less than enchanting, bring up a favorite moment from when you first started dating, or bring up a favorite moment from
Aquarius (Jan23-Feb22) Aquarians make everyone jealous because they have a
ridiculously high sex drive. They are forever on the lookout for sexual pick-ups whether it be in the supermarket, the library or even at a funeral. They have a secret desire to go naked in public which is why a good number have been deported from Thailand in recent years. Research shows that many pop stars and other undesirables were born in early February. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Everywhere you go laughter and comedy follow you. This would be fantastic if you were trying to be funny, but alas that’s not true. You are a complete social disaster, believing for example that The Big Dipper is a constellation next to The Milky Way. For this reason Pisceans should avoid quizzes and competitions at all costs. For you, working out why the chicken crossed the road is postgraduate material. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) Hitler was an Aries man which says it all. Your problem is that you think violence is the answer to every problem. Many Aries born men are club bouncers or debt collectors who become too big for their boots. Hitler in his youth was a house painter but this was simply to give him an excuse to start arguments with the people living there. Thinking of you as a ram is laughable as impotency awaits you in every encounter. Taurus (Apr23-May22) If you feel your life is going nowhere that’s because it is true. To start with, your personal habits are disgusting, smoking when taking a shower and not washing properly under your arms and between your legs. You are also pig ignorant which doesn’t help. When filling in a form asking you for your sex you are supposed to give your gender and not write “Yes Please”. Gemini (May 23-June22) You are a schizophrenic but don’t realize it. You imagine you are Socrates and Plato combined but a more likely duo is Laurel and Hardy who slept together even though they didn’t fancy each other. Geminis speak very loudly which is unnecessary as they are usually talking to themselves. They also imagine they are ambidextrous which means they can pick their nose with both hands at once. Ugh! Cancer (June23-July22) Cancerians are forced to be loners because they are never invited to parties. They are always trying to help other people without knowing how to assist. SWAT teams show up at their house because someone has reported a hostage situation. More Cancerians than any other star sign are thrown out of the Samaritans for giving bum advice to the suicidal, for example where to buy handcuffs and plastic bags.
There’s a reason this is the first item on the list – it’s the most important thing there is. A marriage isn’t 50/50, each partner has to give 100 percent and never expect anything in return. And besides, when you really love someone, it feels really good to do things for them.
your relationship (like the day you both called in sick and drove to the beach in the middle of winter). You may be surprised how quickly it kindles loving feelings. 5. Argue Respectfully
2. Know When Your Partner Needs Attention
The happiest couples are those that have learned to recognize their partner’s little calls for attention. A study of 120 newlywed couples found that those who were still married after six years were picking up on their partners’ cues 86 percent of the time; only 33 percent had been doing so in the divorced couples. So keep an eye (and an ear!) out for little hints from your partner. For example, if you hear him mention that he hasn’t had a milk shake in ages, pop into the drive-thru and bring one home for him after work – it lets him know you’re paying attention to his needs.
All couples have disagreements, and an argument doesn’t mean you’re breaking up. But anytime there’s a squabble, it’s important that you discuss the problem rather than attacking the person. Becoming critical, defensive or contemptuous will cause a simple disagreement to dissolve into something more serious. If you find it hard to argue without becoming disrespectful, take a break until you feel calmer and can discuss the issue more calmly. Take that time to reflect on positive parts of your relationship, and reasons why you love your partner. It will put you in a better frame of mind for continuing the discussion. and
by Madam Zyra
(July 23-Aug22) You like Leo to grab attention any way you
can. Many people who set fire to themselves at demonstrations are Leos as are those who steal knickers from clothes lines in the middle of the night. You like to kiss mirrors a lot. People like you are forever searching for affection but you never find it because the population at large regards you as a jerk. Some Leos claim to be gay but this is only to draw attention to themselves. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) You are obsessed with cleanliness and even examine your toothbrush with a magnifying glass. You are also dangerous. Virgos commit most of the world’s drive-by shootings and, when challenged, say it’s because the owner never cleaned his car. You also like opening and closing the fridge door continually for hours on end, just to try and fool the light into switching itself on and off wrongly. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Libras eat a great deal but have no insight into the culinary arts. They think that fusion cuisine is two sausages stuck together and an Indian take-away is a Red Cross parcel. They also believe that fast food is running down the road with fish and chips after failing to pay the bill. Librans are so hopeless at general knowledge that they don’t even know the difference between milk coffee and coffee with milk. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) You think the whole world is against you yet fail to understand why you have never been abducted by aliens. You see conspiracies everywhere and think the Titanic was sunk by a stray torpedo. It has been shown conclusively that most Scorpios are very hairy and this is particularly true of the women. You cheat at cards but it doesn’t do you any good as you don’t know what trumps can actually do. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Sagittarians have a great love of adventure come what may. Several booked a passage on the Lusitania after the Germans threatened to sink it. Others rushed to British railway stations when the IRA bombing campaign was at its height in the 1970s. Their lack of fear explains why Sagittarians often accept jobs such as fairground freaks. Most of the applicants for the recent vacancy of hangman in India were born in December. Capricorn (Dec 23-Jan22) Capricorns are ambitious, selfglorifying and as dull as hell. This explains why most politicians are Capricorns and why global warming is unlikely to be challenged early enough. They love to talk into their mobile phones whilst everyone is watching, even though they don’t have anyone to call. Most of the people arrested for grand larceny and counterfeiting are born in early January. Jack the Ripper was a Capricorn.

Local Sports An early Christmas for Carroll! Four golfers share top billing
by Steve Ellison
Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees More good news on the condition of Green Valley, where we hold our regular Monday comp. The weather was a bit on the hot side which is not the norm for this time of year. We got off a bit early from our booked tee time of 9:20 am and were back to TGC by just after 3 pm. Frank Tordeur has been visiting us regularly for the past seven years but by the time you read this, Frank will be wheels up already. He has slipped to a 20 handicap after way too much time on the slopes in the winter months so today his 36 points nets a third place on the podium. Capt. Smedley proved to be a terrible host once more and his second place today earned him a proper scolding. Dave Ferris had one good shot at the right time to win that Caddy Smile near pin. Well deserved it was and we thank “Big Wheel” Dave for all his help with that very worthwhile project. And then there’s Jack. Flamboyant owner of News Steaks & Grill, flashy Jack was best of show today as the athlete scored 38 off of his six handicap. Not too bad for a guy who hangs around bars a lot!
somehow he managed one of the better rounds of his decade and his 38 was four better than their best. As if that were not enough, Bryan did it from the long tees of 6,600 yards proving to all of us oldies there’s still a chance if you try! John Ahmed and his pal Kam have been joining us on their holidays from Pakistan for years and finally John took the near pin prize for his initial win on tour.
Results: 1st – Jack Grindvold (6) 38 points 2nd – Phil Smedley (14) 37 points 3rd – Frank Tordeur (20) 36 points
Results: 1st – Bryan Carroll (19) 38 points 2nd – Ken Aihara (5) 34 points T -3rd – David Rose (3) 33 points
Greenwood C & A – Stableford – Yellow Tees Some things I believe on a golf course and then there are some things that happen that make you just slap yourself on the forehead. Bryan “The Old Man” Carroll and I came to Pattaya for the first time 16 years ago. We had booked a golf tour like everyone else, and thought we could do a better job of what we saw. Several hundred rounds later we still have the company and are still bringing groups over for that first thrilling trip to the Land of Smiles. Today Bryan was faced with some seriously good golfers, and a hell of a lot younger, fitter, and more able bodied than he is. Believe me, I know! There would be a good 25 years difference between Carroll and the average age of the other “lads” but
John Ahmed, Bryan Carroll, David Rose, Bob Mulholland and Kenny Aihara
T -3rd – Bob Mulholland (7) 33 points Khao Kheow – Stableford – White Tees Great course, great condition and great weather made for another perfect day of golf in paradise. We play Khao Kheow all the time and rarely get any complaints, just a lot of praise. Locals and tourists all agree that this is a fine Pete Dye layout which is why the sign-up sheet is always full for Khao Kheow. There were some high scores here today, Capt. Phil was once more good to the tune of 39 on the card while fellow Aussie Jason Barnett did two better to win on 41 points. Jason just kills the ball and his three handicap proves he has all the skills. He was visiting us about seven months back, so good to see Jason returning for more of the
good life. It was last month’s medal winner Zed Belogavec who did his best today and tied Jason for the 41 point win. The island green at Khao Kheow, B-8, is a memorable one. This hole mimics TPC Sawgrass, the more famous of Pete Dye’s golf designs. We usually have our Caddy Smile near pin on the last par-3, but today we just had to have it here and the winner was none other than the Wednesday winner Bryan Carroll to finish a fine week of golf and an early Christmas for Carroll! Well played, mate, there’s still quite a few more good years left in there yet!

Stableford More than 30 golfers made their way to Greenwood for today’s game and the course and weather proved enjoyable to most, although it did get a little hotter as the day wore on. Several players did better than their handicaps, playing from the yellow markers because the ground was soft and therefore little run. We played A and C nines. Peter Grey was having his best score ever and enjoying his round with the fun caddies and playing partners JJ Harney, Fred Dineley and Stu Rifkin. Playing the long 18th par 4, he chipped on for his third and was promptly informed by JJ that he just incurred a two shot penalty. Totally perplexed he asked what rule had now been invented that would have cost him two shots (and a possible podium finish). JJ answered “Because I hit your ball, so you must have hit mine.’ Well it’s a wonder people in Bangkok didn’t hear the expletives and curses that Peter rained down on the Smiling Assassin JJ Harney! With today’s numbers we ran with three flights. A - Flight saw Don Richardson and Bill Steinmann take it down to the wire. In the count back, the Don came up trumps over Bill. The Judge (in his last appearance) took third place honors. B-Flight saw Alex Field yet again take the honors, with Mashi Kaneta coming second ahead of Geoff Bracegirdle. C-Flight was won by John Anderson finishing a few shots ahead of second place Pat Kavanagh, with Peter Grey taking third. To say he was surprised would be an understatement as he was convinced that J.J was playing the conspiracy game!

Steve brakes the drought with a clean win! KhaoKheow We had 20 eager punters lining up at Soi Chaiyapoon to take on the not so easy but great conditioned course being Khao Kheow CC. Allocated the B and C nines in that order and hitting from the yellow tees in warm weather with a sometimes breeze, the course was found to bein superb condition with the greens putting truly. We ran with two flights today, in A grade Steve Younger showed that the easiest way to win was not get caught up in a count back. His 36 points saw him a shot clear of both JJ Harney and Mashi Kaneta

Bunker Boys Golf by Frank Quinlan Crystal Bay B&C White Tees Stableford A flight Back down the seven to a course that was in good condition after all the rains and all the bare patches have now got good grass coverage. The greens and bunkers were excellent and no fault could be found with the course. Our man on fire Jimmy Carr once again winning the A flight beating Geoff Parker by a solitary point which makes him the leading contender to claim the golfer of the month title. A welcome to Chris Cox who managed to hang onto third. In the B flight another frequent winner Ross Schiffke shot lights out to score 45 points and must now come under the close scrutiny of the handicapper, but who minds losing a few shots after an outstanding game like this. Mike Brett was convinced that he had won with his excellent 41 points only to have his dreams shattered on learning of the top score.

In the A flight, Stuart Tinkler coming back to form with dreams of the golfer of the month that he won at this time last year but will have
to go some to catch the form players. Gordon Melia showing a glimpse of his previous ability and crept into third. In the B flight, Peter Allen and John Hughes tied with 37 points each and on the count back, Peter secured the win with 20 points on the back nine. John could be heard all evening recounting his game hole by hole to anyone who would listen.

Pattana (Stableford) We come here pretty often these days, it is a regular monthly stop, and it is far enough out of Pattaya to be a day out, and not enough to be really far. Also, the staffs were really friendly and gave us good rates.

Even cutting Jimmy Carr by a further stroke on his handicap didn’t stop him from recording his second win in A flight this week. Geoff Parker must be wondering what score he needs to shoot in order to win, and to add to his woes loosing the count back to Chris Cox with only 17 on the back nine to Chris’s 20. Les Hall made the winning score in B flight managing to beat Eddie Kelly by one with Lawrence Harding in third. Neil Carter is enjoying the cold weather while cruising on the Mediterranean and everyone sends regards. Dick and Andre sail home at Navy! by Derek Brook
Plutaluang (Navy) N & W – St It’s been a while since the Tropical golfers played the Navy course (too hard to type or even pronounce Plutaluang) so this Friday the gang decided to give it a visit. Some 21 golfers made what they thought would be a relatively quick tri south, but some folks got caught in heavy traffic on the way. It didn't matter as the course was quite busy and things were running late. The Tropical Golfers were scheduled to play the South and East course, so naturally we ended up playing North and West. Credit goes to the staff at Navy for helping us out as the South/East courses were
Winner On this day, we had a small group of players but we were soon into cars and on our way. I jumped into Mashi’s car only to find he had bought a new car and gone up market. Always nice to drive around in a new car and get the new car smell; brings out the mechanic in me. However even a new car has problems. As I sat
patiently in the back seat, Mashi let me out and took the child lock off. It was thought I was still asleep. On arrival we noticed we were one group of seemingly many and we were asked to get to the tee as soon as we could. Having found we were to play C and A, in that order, and we were soon away. The course was quite full and we were reminded that the high season is here. Happy Days. The course as usual was in quite good condition, the fairways fine and the greens ran quick and true. Well when the rest were putting, mine always seemed to slide off. Nothing changes. The wind got up occasionally and we had the odd spot of rain, but nothing much. In all, it was a fine day. The club house is superb and these days just outside the changing room there is a small coffee bar that sells fine cream cakes, not that I would ever be tempted. So after a coffee and a cream cake, it was time to get back to BJ’s. Back early, we were able to get onto the results nice and early. The winner with 39 points was Geoff Bracegirdle ahead of Tom Herrington in second with 35 points. In third was Landis Brooks with 35 points and in fourth was Mashi Kaneta 34 points on countback over Dave Nicholson. Then we had a few beers and put the World to right. T.T.F.N. Kissy Buchanan does a job on the rest by Peter Grey Mountain Shadow GC On a somber note, two of our favorite golfers are battling some very serious health issues. The terrible thing about this is since the last time I mentioned it they have gone backwards. To Ernie Picken and Mike Gosden, we all wish you the very best. It was a lovely morning; not a cloud in the sky and no threat of rain when17 golfers boarded the buses to Mt Shadow. When we got to the course, we found it was quite warm, however, a gentle breeze made playing conditions pleasant. The greens as per usual were tricky and parts of some fairways were drier than an AA meeting. With the numbers being the way they were we played only the one flight. Keith Buchanan set the pace and came in first with a tidy 40 points from his handicap of 15. Bill Steinmann was second with Ebrahim and Colin Stielow filling third and fourth spots. Results: A Grade 0 – 18 1st - Keith Buchanan (15) 40 points 2nd - Bill Steinmann (12) 36 points 3rd - Ebrahim Al-Ansari (16) 35 points 4th - Colin Stielow (28) 33 points *On a side note 4 players ended up on 32 points. all backed up, so we gratefully accepted the change. So we'd be playing the Lighthouse hold after all! Course conditions were pretty good, and the greens especially were in fine shape considering all they play they get. It’s a tough and long layout, but still enough golfers were up to the challenge to post good scores. A-Flight (0-19): Andre Van Dyk (c/h 15) continued his winning ways with the

You & Your Pets
Everything you ever wanted to know about vibrissae Say what? Vibrissae are those stiff hairs on your cat’s face and legs. Most people call them whiskers. Unlike the fur found on the rest of her body, these hairs are part of the animal’s guidance system. Vibrissae, or whiskers, are filled with tiny, supersensitive nerves that help your cat judge distance and space so she knows how far she must jump to reach the kitchen counter or whether a box is large enough for her to enter. And if your cat happens to be blind, her whiskers allow her to sense what’s around her so she can navigate rooms just by walking around and letting her whiskers get a sense of where she is spatially. Most whiskers are deeply rooted in the thick pads on the upper lip, but smaller sets are in the eyebrow area, along the chin, and near the feet. Those on the sides of the nose are the same width as your cat’s body; they help her figure out whether a space is wide enough to squeeze through. A complex set of muscles on the face moves whiskers back and forth. The way your cat arranges them indicates her feelings. When she is relaxed, her whiskers will remain still, sticking straight out from the side of her head; when curious or on the hunt, she’ll press them
slightly forward, and if nervous or upset, she will pin the whiskers back toward the face. Most important to know and remember is that you should never trim these highly sensitive whiskers, lest the cat becomes disoriented and scared. Vibrissae are vital to a cat’s mobility and sense of security. Without whiskers, cats would not be able to achieve the great acrobatic feats that are so awe-inspiring, or protect themselves from dangerous situations. Grooming, trimming or cutting off a cat’s whiskers is a big no-no. Leave them alone!
Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Zero
Zero is an old timer and spends most of her time chilling out in the garden in some shady spot. She loves her food and will run at a great pace as soon as she hears a tin of tuna being opened.
Bella and Jacko
This lovely pair have been with us for a while now. Both are friendly and - although they are not brother and sister - they are soul mates. So thought it would be nice to re-home them together if possible.
Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.
More parasites to fear
James & Pan
This lovely brother and sister combination would love to go to a home together if at all possible. They are both very loving and playful, although they can be a little shy with strangers at first. But once they get to know you they are fine.
Puss and Boots
After a walk in fields or in the woods, you check yourself for pests like ticks, right? Don't forget about your pets. Tick bites put your furry pals at risk for Lyme disease and a handful of other serious illnesses. And they put you and your family at risk as well. If you find a tick on your dog or cat, remove it with tweezers, and be careful to get the entire head; do not crush it. Ask your vet about controlling ticks (“hep” in Thai).
This cute pair were rescued from a gang of nasty Soi dogs after being dumped in the grounds of a Jomtien apartment complex. They are very cute, litter trained and of course spend most of their time play, play playing.
Going to the Dogs... I named my dog “Stay” so I can say, "Come here, Stay. Come here, Stay."
~Steven Wright A duck’s quack has no echo…and nobody knows why. When English settlers landed in Australia, they were impressed with a strange-looking animal that jumped extremely high and far. The foreigners used body language to ask the aboriginal people about this animal. The natives responded, “Kan Ghu Ru.” So the Englishmen adopted the word and named the animal “Kangaroo.” But the aboriginal people were saying “Kan Ghu Ru,” which translates to “We don’t understand.”
Cat Corner Tip Pay Attention Just like children and dogs, cats will get bored if you don't give them enough attention, play with them, and provide them with things to do. And that can lead to habits like chewing, scratching and meowing incessantly. Keep things interesting by hiding treats for your cat to find around the home, provide him with cat toys to chase and play with, and spend ample time showing him your interest and love. Interactive games or feeders are great, particularly when your cat is left alone. When you’re home, play fish (hang a toy on a string and dangle it from a pole as your furry friend chases the prey around the room), or buy a laser pen and enjoy watching your kitten pursue the beam of light as you direct it along the floor and walls.
