Bizarre Pattaya 2016 A
number of breathtaking happenings in Pattaya during the year achieved notoriety well beyond the city limits. Firstly, there were (and are) the unfinished sagas. Last May it was reported that a very tall condominium building had encroached on public land and might well need to be dismantled. It never happened. There was also the usual crop of rumours that Walking Street was overdue for demolition because of illegally-built
structures. But they are all still there. Threats of a vegan Christmas surfaced for the umpteenth year running when reports suggested that turkeys could not be imported, but the alarmist bells fell silent as virtually every restaurant in the resort promised traditional yuletide fare for early bookers. In February, there was international publicity for Pattaya when 30 or so elderly members of Pattaya bridge club were arrested by the licensing authority
on suspicion of gambling and of using playing cards manufactured outside of Thailand. The pensioners were held at Pattaya police station for several hours but then released without charge. A week later their passports and bail money were all returned. Almost a year later, not one member has appeared in court. There was great panic amongst nervous expats in August when a new immigration form was issued to Continued on page 4

News Honda Automobile (Thailand) extends the range of Honda vehicles Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. announced that it has extended the range of Honda vehicles in Thailand which require replacement of Takata passenger’s front airbag inflators. Honda is making this announcement as a precautionary measure to ensure safety for its customers. The extension adds 165,128 passenger’s front airbag inflators as affected parts which require inspection and replacement. Honda dealers nationwide will replace the affected airbag inflators free of charge. The reason for this replacement is the affected Takata airbag inflators might deploy with excessive internal pressure when activated. In such a case, the airbag inflator casing might rupture, which could result in a safety risk for the passengers and driver. The vehicles added to the list of those requiring replacement of the Takata passenger’s front airbag are as follows: • 2009-2011 Honda City • 2009-2011 Honda Jazz • 2009-2011 Honda Freed • 2009-2011 Honda Civic • 2007-2011 Honda CR-V • 2008-2011 Honda Accord Honda has sent notification letters to the owners of vehicles with the affected parts, urging them to contact any authorized Honda dealer nationwide to schedule an appointment for a free replacement of the affected parts. In addition to the owners of vehicles Honda previously notified in its statement dated July 12, 2016, Honda urged the remaining owners of vehicles who have not had the affected Takata
airbag inflators replaced to contact any Honda dealer nationwide to schedule the replacement immediately. The vehicles with affected Takata driver’s front airbag inflators identified in the previous notifications are as follows: • 2012-2013 Honda City • 2012 Honda City CNG • 2012-2013 Honda Jazz • 2013 Honda Jazz Hybrid • 2012 Honda Jazz (model imported from Japan) • 2011 Honda CR-V Honda asked owners of vehicles identified on the above list to contact any Honda dealer nationwide and schedule the replacement of the affected parts in case they have not received any notifications due to possible reasons such as a change of address or ownership. Honda also strongly encourages Honda owners to take the same action in case they are not certain whether their vehicles are affected by these notifications. Honda owners can also check whether their vehicles’ airbag inflators are subject to the replacement of the affected parts by using the following methods with their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): • Access www.honda.co.th/vinsearch • Call any authorized Honda dealer nationwide (please search for Honda dealer telephone numbers at www.honda.co.th/en/ dealer) • Contact Honda Automobile (Thailand)’s Honda call center at 02 341 7777

accompany visa extensions. The three-page questionnaire asked aliens to report all manner of details such as their favourite hang-outs and preferred websites. However, much of the heat went out of the argument when it was explained that it was not actually necessary to answer the more intimate bits. Much of the remaining information requested was and is readily available to Thai police anyway, including car ownership (if any), local bank account details, passport numbers and addresses. There was much speculation in September when the dozens (even hundreds) of tour buses which used to congregate at night on the major sois and clog the traffic during the day had vanished. It turned out that the government was cracking down on zero-sum holidays – the ones where Chinese vacationers to Thailand pay in advance in China but are then pressurized to buy in certain outlets once they arrive here – which led to the closure of a couple of companies and the impounding of huge numbers of coaches. However, by December, there were telltale signs that the crackdown was temporary rather than permanent. Needless to say, there was during the year the inevitable backtracking on a number of issues. It was announced that the new Sukhumvit
Road tunnel was years behind schedule, hastily followed by the news that it will open ahead of schedule in February 2017. A Thai general election, scheduled several times for late 2017, may have to be pushed forward to 2018 because of certain bureaucratic complexities. On the more positive front, improvements on Jomtien Second Road to reduce water-logging appear to be progressing well even if constant flooding made it hard to discern what was going on throughout the rainy season. A bold scheme to begin a new catamaran service from Pattaya to Hua Hin from the start of 2017 was confidently announced in November, but died in the water after civil officials pointed out that the Bali Hai pier was unsafe without further and substantial repairs and upgrading. The whole scheme may need to be rethought in any case. The proposed fee of 1,200 baht for a single journey is thought by many to be expensive, whilst market research suggests that the only way to make a profit is to transport vehicles as well as people. The ferries currently available are too small for freight. In wishing you the compliments of the season, Pattaya Today adds the reminder that you shouldn’t believe all you read on the internet. Nor in newspapers come to that.

Jomtien Fishing Games FOX Networks Group Asia (Fox) has filed a 2.5 billion baht law suit against The Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited for failing to honor bank guarantees for distribution of programming in Thailand. Fox claims that Bangkok Bank had agreed to make restitution for failed payments on behalf of GMM Grammy Public Company Limited and CTH Public Company Limited, both of which were major operators of pay-TV platforms and the holders of licenses of failed digital television channels in Thailand. Bangkok Bank is the largest guarantor to Thailand’s digital television operators, having provided guarantees for 14 of the 24 channels totaling more than 20,000 million baht (41 per cent) of the spectrum license fees raised. Three years ago the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) auctioned digital television licenses and raised approximately 50,000 million baht for the state from 24 operators.
More police officers and volunteers are being deployed to deal with mounting traffic congestion in Pattaya. Traffic jams and lack of discipline on the roads are seen as the major challenges among commuters and other drivers in high season. At a meeting overseen by top brass police officers, it was decided to pump up personnel to manage traffic for the next several months.
Sontaya Khunpleum, president of Chonburi Sports Association, Suchart Khunjeng, president of the Jet Ski Club, and Chanatpong Sriwiset, Pattaya City director, reported that the Jomtien Fishing Games 2016 and Pattaya Water Sport competitions will open on December 24 for two days. The event is designed to create camaraderie and serve as an inspiration for youth to see the importance of nature.

News Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants returns to Thailand in 2017 Following the successful move to Thailand in 2016, the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony will return to Bangkok in 2017. Now celebrating its fifth year, the prestigious event, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, will take place at the W Hotel in Bangkok on the evening of Tuesday, 21 February 2017. Hosted with the support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants will gather the region’s most renowned chefs, industry VIPs and international media to announce the 2017 list. Since launching in 2013, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants has become the most trusted and credible guide to the best places to eat around the region. The 2016 list welcomed 10 new entries and showcased the best dining experiences in 13 Asian countries, more than ever before. The 2017 programme will include the #50BestTalks event, a combination of local food discovery and interactive chef demonstrations that explore regional food trends and local Thai cooking techniques. Scheduled for Monday, 20 February, the one-day curated forum will feature some of Asia’s most influential culinary leaders, including chefs from Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list. William Drew, group editor of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, says: “After the success of the 2016 event, we’re thrilled to return to Thailand for the fifth edition of Asia’s 50 Best
Restaurants. Given the country’s rich culinary history, unique Thai hospitality and vibrant restaurant scene, Thailand is rightly regarded as one of the most celebrated food capitals of the world and an ideal host country for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.” H.E. KobkarnWattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand, says: “When visitors enjoy a quality dining experience in Thailand, it means they have enjoyed a meal from the best quality Thai farm products, in a creative ambience, with exemplary service. We want the world to experience and enjoy the flavours of the Thai nation, and for international chefs to either come to Thailand or remain in their home kitchens to whip up amazing dishes with fresh and tasty Thai ingredients.” Thailand’s prominence in Asia’s culinary scene continues to grow. For the last three years, Bangkok restaurants have claimed the No.1 spot on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list. David Thompson’s Nahm took top honours in 2014 while Gaggan Anand’s eponymous restaurant secured the No.1 spot in 2015 and again last year. Along with Gaggan and Nahm, the 2016 list also featured the Bangkok-based restaurants Eat Me (No.23), and Issaya Siamese Club (No.19). How Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled The list is created from the votes
of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of over 300 leaders in the restaurant industry across Asia, each selected for their expert opinion of Asia’s restaurant scene. The panel in each region is made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘gastronomes’. Members list their choices in order of preference, based on their best restaurant experiences of the previous 18 months. There is no pre-determined check-list of criteria, but there are strict voting rules. For the 2017 edition, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is once again working with professional services consultancy Deloitte as its official independent adjudication partner. The adjudication by Deloitte ensures that the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants are protected. Our Community Busy Sporting Calendar It has been a busy week for sport here in Pattaya, particularly for children who are living with a disability. First off was the annual Able the Disabled Dressage Competition that takes place at Horseshoe Point and is organised by Sandra Cooper and her team of wonderful and very patient volunteers. More than 20 youngsters, mostly Thai but also a few foreigners, all living with various degrees of special needs, took part in the competition which saw them not only riding their chosen horse, but also performing a series of activities to earn points. The children, many of whom attend the Father Ray Center for Children with Special Needs, also attend weekly hippotherapy sessions at Horseshoe Point, and watching these youngsters makes you realise just how beneficial sitting on a horse can be. Not only does it give a child confidence, but it also improves their posture and their major and minor motor skills. A few days later it was over to the School for the Blind for the annual sports day, brought forward from its usual date in February. Once again the students split into two teams and as usual the rivalry was fierce, no more so than in the final of the women’s soccer competition.
by Derek Franklin
There is only one word to describe it, brutal. Imagine being in goal and the ball is small and plastic, with a bell inside so the players can hear where it is. They kick as hard as they can towards the goal of the opposing team and the goalkeeper is expected to stop the ball going past her, while wearing no protection and it was very obvious on several occasions that if the ball hits you in the face it will hurt, a lot. During the game the ball had to be replaced several times as they either broke, split open or were left with a big dent in them after they were kicked hard. Two days later the Father Ray Center for Children with Special Needs held their first ever sports day, which started with a parade by the children who wanted to pay their respects to the late King of Thailand. Athletics, swimming, soccer and petanque were all played and as the day went on the noise got louder and louder as there was also a competition to see which group of supporters could cheer the loudest; we’re surprised the children couldn’t be heard in the next province! More information on the work of the Father Ray Foundation can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@ fr-ray.org.

Mick & Di The Food Lovers
Coco & Rum
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com General Manager Chaiphun Thongsuthum & Executive Chef Pie
Restaurant & Bar at Centra by Centara Maris Resort Jomtien
>> from L1 Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 10 pm the central table at Coco & Rum is laden with its innovative tapas-style buffet. It’s a sensational sight, polar fresh seafood such as scallops, calamari, and mussels join a first-rate selection of handrolled sushi, freshly cut sashimi plus salmon, poached sea bass, fish mousse with prawns and seared tuna. Salads abound with various pastas, plus there’s Italian cold cuts the likes of salami, prosciuttos, mortadella and all sorts of other treats including a feast of single bite delicacies. It really is an amazing spread and that’s before you savour the delights of the homemade desserts. Jellies, crème caramel, cakes, and lots more beautifully constructed confections make for a sugarista’s dream. The cost of this gourmet feast is B.385 net and if you choose to enjoy a main course to boot the price is only B.285 extra. The a la carte menu definitely has a touch of whimsy about it with playful descriptions and imaginative presentations. “The Chill Element” lists items called Beneath my Wings (coriander battered chicken wings served with homemade sweet chilli sauce) or Burning Lips (raw Pacific salmon with chilli, garlic, lemongrass and tangy lime). Salads
are deconstructed paying special attention to the classic elements but served with Chef Pie’s zoosh of playfulness. I plumped for Samurai Salmon while Mick opted for the Wild Pork chop. Both were exceedingly good. The tempura battered fish fell in shards under the fork and the butter crushed potatoes were particularly scrumptious as were the slow-roasted herbed potatoes that accompanied Mick’s Kurobuta grilled chop. There’s a potato wizard at work in this kitchen. To round off a splendid dinner we shared a wickedly good double chocolate brownie with homemade vanilla ice cream. We were staying the night at the hotel so having been superbly fed and watered we made our way to our room on the 7th floor. There are 282 suites and rooms at Centra Maris, all designed with modern, clean lines, neutral, muted colours, big contemporary bathrooms with baths and state-of-the-art showers plus all the expected amenities including complimentary internet access. Breakfast next morning contained everything you could possibly want. Freshly brewed coffee and tea, an efficient egg station, noodles with all the add-ons, rice congee, salads and cold meats, fresh fruit,
Rocket Fuel
yoghurts, and so much more. Hot, flaky croissants are my delight and these in-house pastries were just perfect accompanied by home-made conserves and creamy butter. Across the table all was well with Mick tucking into eggs and crispy bacon for a mid-week treat. Centra Maris hits all the spots

Royal Cliff’s unique deVine Wine Club Presents an Odyssey of Grand Cru Bordeaux Wines
Pattaya’s foodiegentsia and oenophiles gathered recently in the richness of the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar to enjoy the latest deVine Wine Club dinner. The host for the evening was the well-known Bordeaux Ambassador, Berenger Le Boursicot, export manager for the historical wine merchant company, Borie-Manoux, a wine house that has been creating Bordeaux wines since 1870. Six excellent and varied wines had been selected to accompany the exquisite food of Executive Chef Walter Thenisch. Graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, these occasions are eagerly anticipated and enthusiastically attended. The welcome flute of Montaudon Reserve Premiere Brut with its fresh, floral taste was a perfect fit with Chef Andreas’ creative cocktail canapés enjoyed in the lounge before adjourning to the Royal Grill Room. To launch the evening Chef Walter had crafted a pre-appetiser of a cocktail of scallops together with one of the most coveted Mediterranean prawns, known as Carabineros. Both rendered even more delicious by a flash of broccoli cream, a sprinkling of hazelnut crumble, nacre tapioca pearls and Pernod foam. This was an absolute stunner of a dish and paired with a Beau Rivage Bordeaux Blanc 2012, a classic blend of Semillon and Sauvignon blanc varietals, the combination was sensational. Next up was a confit salmon with mango, radish and chilli salsa. The prettiest of abstract plating produced a culinary display of soft pink salmon artfully arranged around the plate with shaved radish and sweet mango together with the most artistic centerpiece of nasturtium flowers and arranged leaves. A very dry Turpin Muscadet 2013 paired beautifully. A ripe, full wine with a classic mineral edge, it was the ideal choice to accompany this lovely dish. So far so gastro – the culinary romp continued building in power and weight both the wine and food. However, a short respite produced a palate cleanser in the shape of a hot red pepper sorbet. Hot indeed chef; there was a definite potent, lingering

Next we moved on to the reds with a pouring of Les Hauts de Lynch Moussas 2010. A big powerful mouthful, dark purple and inky, it was married to a juniper berry and thyme flavoured venison loin with gratin potatoes and cranberry enhanced red cabbage. A bodacious, robust course, lean dark meat paired with a slightly gamey red with soft tannins, it all harmonized effortlessly. It could only be cheese to follow such a pageant of dishes and we were treated to a trio of beauties, a gourmet Swiss cheese called Monk’s Head, a mild, buttery Camembert made with goat’s milk rather than cow’s milk and the famous Roquefort known in France as the ‘cheese of kings and popes’. Keeping pace with these strong flavours we were served an excellent Chateau Batailley 2006, deep in colour with a medium to full
body, it made excellent friends with the premium cheeses. Chef Walter had even one more indulgence up his sleeve in the form of a chocolate spiral with a forest berry roulade and a Bourbon vanilla sauce joined with a Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 1996. What a combination, this Sauternes was just amazing, rich, and luxurious with tastes of dripping honey, it was sheer nectar and enjoyed with the luscious confection it ever so sweetly brought down the curtain on another thrilling evening of wining and dining deVine Wine Club style. Congratulations all round, the wine was wonderful, the sextet of courses superbly conceived, cooked and presented with the entire event orchestrated to precision. Serving an assemblage of 50 seasoned gourmands simultaneously is not an easy task but the deVine Wine Club delivered with bells and whistles. Do check out their website, www. royalcliff.com, for future events.

that poses a risk of collision, the CMBS' audiovisual Multi-Information System alerts the driver. Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning (LDW): If the car is unintentionally beginning to move out of the detected lane, the LWD will display an alert on the MultiInformation Display (MID) with a vibration alert in the steering wheel. More innovative safety solutions: Honda Lane Watch a blind-spot display that uses a camera located on the passenger side mirror to relay live video on the 7.7 inch touchscreen. This takes the stress out of hectic city driving. Another safety feature is the multi-angle high-definition backup camera adjustable to three perspectives and with dynamic guidelines. Verdict: After a weekend of driving inner city, urban streets, rural roads and highways, the new Accord Hybrid is surprisingly quiet and very comfortable for drivers and passengers alike, and seat-of-the-pants acceleration and braking performances should exceed most expectations. The frugal fuel consumption is also impressive. When time to top-up the new Honda Hybrid is E85 and E20 compatible. I must confess that of all the Honda automobiles I've driven including the amazing Honda Civic RS, the new Honda Accord Hybrid TECH is my choice. Honda Accord Hybrid TECH Engine: 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve i-VTEC Transmission: E-CVT Power: 215 hp Torque: 175 Nm Max speed: 200 km/h Thirst (combined): 23.8 km/l Price: 1.849 million baht www. honda.co.th

The Wai Khru
Spa Promotions
by Rory Coughlan
The wai is a traditional Thai greeting with the palms together as a sign of respect. Khru is the Thai form of the Sanskrit word guru meaning teacher. Ram is the Thai word for dancing in classical style and muay meaning boxing. The full term can be translated as "war dance saluting the teacher". Thai speakers generally shorten it either to wai khru or ram muay. The ram muay shows respect and gratitude to the boxer's teacher, their parents, and to their ancestors. In the days when boxers fought in front of royalty, the ram muay also pays respect to the king. Upon entering the ring, fighters circle the ring in a counterclockwise direction and pray at each corner. They bow their head at each corner three times in salutation to Buddha, Rama, and the sangha of monks. They then commence the ram muay, the movements of which are said to be based on Hanuman. The ram muay is a personal ritual, ranging from very complex to very simple, and often contains clues about who trained the fighter and where the fighter is from. The ram muay is accompanied by music, providing a rhythm to the boxer's movements. The practitioner wears a Mongkhon on their head and armbands known as Pra Jiad during the ceremony, and the ram muay is accompanied by music. The

Music is an integral part of Muay Thai and because of it; this art of self-defence has become an extension of one of Thailand’s dramatic arts. The musical instruments orchestrated in the background of the Wai Khru rituals and in the competitions consist of the Ta Pong or Glong-Kag (two-face drum), Toe Pee Java (Javanese flute) and the Ching (cymbals). According to legendary chronicles and historical records of Thailand, Muay Thai competitions were customarily organized on celebratory and festive occasions. It was also used as a means of selecting men
with great fighting skills to serve in important positions in the military. One of the most important virtues of the Thai people is the showing of respect and sincere humbleness towards teachers, masters, mentors and instructors. They are considered to be a close second to their true parents. To train for Muay Thai a fighter must have a mentor; this is the tradition of the art. A fighter maybe directly taught by other fighters, but all in all, every fighter is considered to have a mentor, and it is customary that all fighters must respect their mentors. For those whose knowledge and wisdom guide us on our journey we are forever grateful.

Ixoost Esavox Lamborghini Speaker System
You might not be able to drive a Lambo every day, but you can appreciate their design on a regular basis with the Ixoost Esavox Lamborghini Speaker System. Crafted from a carbon monocoque chassis, two handmade wooden side cabinets, and an original Lamborghini exhaust, it outputs sound as loud and detailed as one of the Italian sports cars. It has 800 watts of total power spread across two 1-inch tweeters, two 6.5-inch full-range drivers, two 8-inch woofers, and a massive 15-inch downward-facing sub. Powered on with a start button like the ones used in the cars, it accepts audio over Bluetooth or RCA inputs and is available in four exclusive colors.
Pocket Tripod PRO The Pocket Tripod’s unique patented design allows it to pack the functionality of a full-sized photography tripod into the size of two credit cards. Transforming it from a card to a phone tripod is as easy as a twist and flip. The result is a robust tripod for your iPhone or Android that’s perfect for long exposure and time-lapse photography. But also, a great stand for your phone on-the-go for watching movies without obstructing the screen, all while keeping your device safe from accidental spills. The smooth adjustability of the Pocket Tripod makes it possible to use any flat surface to prop up your phone and still fit the frame. Never again be left without a stable platform for your iPhone or Android, whether it’s to capture breathtaking time-lapse videos and light paintings, making video calls, or just to watch movies on the go.
Nintendo Switch We knew it was coming — albeit with a way-lesscatchy name — but the Nintendo Switch is finally official. As had been rumored, the system is a console/portable hybrid, with a high-def screen that undocks from its TV-connected charger to let you take your games on the go. The two sides of the normal controller also snap out, attaching to the screen on either side, and can be removed on-the-go to serve as separate, more basic controllers for multiplayer action. Other details are scant, but we'll likely know much more ahead of its March 2017 release.

Property Report Congress in Singapore! What is the Property Report Congress series? It’s a dedicated forum for ASEAN industry leaders, VIPs, Southeast Asia Property Awards winners and judges--all innovative personalities in their own right focusing on how to continue driving growth and excellence in one of the world’s most dynamic real estate markets. Since its October 2015 debut in Singapore, the Property Report Congress has gone on to become ASEAN’s unchallenged premier event offering a unique opportunity for two full days of high-level industry networking. Five equallysuccessful events were subsequently presented in Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Yangon, Kuala Lumpur and, most recently, Bangkok, where a record140 delegates, speakers and media participated. Last month’s Property Report Congress at the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore brought together nearly 30 experts from the island nation and other Southeast Asian countries for two-days of panels and round table discussions. Participants explored such crucial issues as cooling measures in Singapore, infrastructure projects in the Philippines, transitoriented development in Malaysia, the impact of tax and property law in Indonesia, potential oversupply in Cambodia, the transformation of the urban skyline in Thailand, foreign investment in Vietnam, and the emerging market of Myanmar. Of course, discussions also focused on the current state of the region’s real
estate markets. Liam Aran Barnes, brand director and editor-in-chief of Property Report, opened the conference where keynote speaker Kent Wertime, coCEO of Ogilvy and Mather Asia Pacific, addressed the topic, “Future Markets: Accessing the Next One Billion Middle Class Consumers.” C o nf erence d elegates and attendees had the opportunity to meet and learn from Asia’s industry leaders responsible for creating the new property landscape in ASEAN and Asia Pacific. There also was a special and informative panel session with this year’s Real Estate Personality of the Year winners from Southeast Asia, including Cambodia’s Rithy Sear, chairman, Worldbridge Group of Companies; Thailand’s Suriya Poolvaralaks, managing director, Major Development, and Indonesia’s Herman Nagaria, director of Summarecon Agung. The first day was comprised of eight insightful ASEAN country panels that presented data and information to assist participants in learning about their countries’ future consumer trends and emerging and established markets. They also heard from real estate experts who shared their perspectives. The second day featured an exciting round-table forum where attendees could move from country to country and sit face-to-face with industry experts and discuss the future of key property markets in 2017.

Power of Attorney for Property Registration What is a power of attorney? A power of attorney is a document in which one person (the principal) appoints another person to act as an agent on his or her behalf, thus conferring authority on the agent or attorneyin-fact to perform certain acts, private affairs, business, or other legal matters on behalf of the principal. Can a general form of power of attorney be used in Land Office transactions? A buyer or seller of real property who wishes to authorize another person to handle the transaction on their behalf must fill in and sign the power/letter of attorney form specially provided by the Land Office. The government provincial and local Land Department's branch offices in Thailand only accept the official standard Land Department's Thai script 'Power of Attorney' (Tor Dor 21 for land and house; Or Chor 21 for condominium). Using these forms will ensure that the principal gives all the required information. The completed form, together with a certified copy of the principal’s citizen ID card or passport and visa, are to be presented by the agent to concerned officials of the Land Office. How can I protect myself when signing a power of attorney? To protect the interests of the principal and other interested parties, the principal must: 1. clearly fill in all important details of the land or other real property, e.g., building, house 2. c l e a r l y s p e c i f y t h e authorized act(s) and the scope of the power authorized e.g., buying, selling, mortgaging, etc., including special conditions (if any) 3. a v o i d w r i t i n g w i t h inconsistent handwriting or ink colour or, if typing, using different typewriters 4. specify the number of words erased, added, changed, and crossed out (if any) and sign where
Tor Dor 21
each affected word is 5. neither sign the form before it has been filled in completely and according to the principal’s wishes nor sign a blank form 6. have at least one or, if the principal’s fingerprint instead of signature is affixed, two witnesses sign the completed form (witness’s fingerprint is unacceptable); if the agent is the principal’s wife, the principal must sign as a witness and must provide his written consent What if the principal is outside Thailand? The principal must have the completed form legalized/ notarized by the embassy or consular office/a notary public if the form is completed outside Thailand. For how long is a power of attorney for property registration valid?
The normal validity of a power of attorney is three months from the date it was signed, or shall depend on the consideration of the officer at the Land Office. Can one agent represent both parties at the same time? An agent can represent both parties at the same time. In cases where the agent represents both parties to the transaction, the principal must clearly specify in the power/letter of attorney their consent to the agent representing the other party. Do I need to have my documents translated to Thai? All documents required by the Land Office such as birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, etc. must be submitted in Thai. Translated documents must be certified as correct translation of the original document.

Business News Marriott named Aon Best Employer in Asia Pacific
Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR) has been named a 2016 Aon Best Employer in Asia Pacific by Aon Hewitt, the global talent, retirement and health solutions business of Aon plc (NYSE: AON). The Aon Best Employers program measures and recognizes employer excellence worldwide. With more than 15 years of experience in best employer studies across the world, and backed by more than 20 years of experience in employee research, the Aon Best Employer program compares organizations to identify those that strive to create a competitive advantage through their people and become employers of choice. All of Marriott's 11 eligible countries in Asia Pacific -- Australia, China (including Hong Kong), India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam -- won country awards, and the leading hospitality company was also saluted with the 2016 global Aon Best Employer award. It is the only company to receive Global recognition consecutively for the past three years. To achieve this level of recognition, a company must achieve regional certification in at least two regions. Marriott qualified by achieving certification in five regions.
Marriott gives great prominence to associate satisfaction, especially at this crucial juncture in Marriott's evolvement as a company. Marriott acquired Starwood Hotel & Resorts on September 23, resulting in the world's biggest hotel group. In Asia Pacific the hotel group now has 163,000 rooms with another 120,000 in the pipeline. The company's associates in Asia Pacific now number more than 124,000 and its commitment to offering its people the best possible workplace is as strong as ever. "Our associates are the public face of Marriott and this award means so much as it comes directly from their opinions. Since our founding in 1927, Marriott has built its business on taking care of its people, who in turn would take care of the guests. As our company expands and a new wave of colleagues are now under the Marriott umbrella, we will continue to place our associates at the very heart of our business," said Craig S. Smith, president and managing director for Asia Pacific. Asia is Marriott's fastest growing market and there are plans to add another 390 hotels across 21 brands across the region by the end of 2020. To support the company's plans for growth and attract the next generation of associates, Marriott has long put great emphasis on its
unique company culture with its traditions of teamwork, excellence and community involvement. Marriott's commitment to its associates is illustrated by TakeCare, Marriott's unique program that focuses on associate wellbeing and happiness. The TakeCare program provides a global focus on helping associates live their best life -- with a focus on the body, mind and spirit, while building a healthy and secure future. "At Marriott, innovative associate programs such as TakeCare keep our employees engaged and happy to come to work. We are committed to programs like this because as well as being the right thing to do, they also make good business sense. In order to attract, engage and retain the best talent in the region, we will continue to put people first," said Regan Taikitsadaporn, chief human resources officer at Marriott International. The Aon Best Employers program compares organizations to identify those that strive to create a competitive advantage through their people and become employers of choice. To achieve global recognition through the Aon Best Employers program, Marriott was assessed on four measures. The Aon Hewitt award ceremonies in Asia Pacific will take place next summer.

"We have been looking at Phuket for many years, but in the past the infrastructure was lacking. Things are improving now, an extension of the airport is taking place, the formation of the Asean Economic Community [AEC]; it all can help Phuket become a playground of Southeast Asia," Supaluck added. The Café del Mar brand has built an inimitable reputation around the globe for its laid back coastal venues and original chill-out tunes. The label was born in Ibiza in 1980 at a bar next to San Antonio beach, and grew from the simple notion that people enjoy a relaxed evening by the sea while listening to great music and sipping on top quality drinks.

A line-up of world class musicians have worked with the label including Moby, Underworld, Chicane, the legendary DJ Sanchez and José Padilla. Youth Focus Learning is a Sunset at the Beach by Jay Chambers Imagine that you are at the beach during sunset. The sun is dimming into shades of violet and orange as it slowly sets into the sea. The wind blows gently against your skin. The sound of the surf crashing upon the beach washes over you. The smell of salty ocean water fills your nostrils. Your feet slowly sink into coarse, wet sand. You feel your muscles unclench and relax as you willingly fall into the moment of peace. Now, what are you focusing upon? Are you lost in the visual aspects of the glorious sunset? Does the caress of the wind take you over? Is the salty smell of the water filling your senses? Just what does your mind become locked upon at such a life fulfilling moment? Does one sense stand out or do all five hit you at once? For some people sight is their primary sense, so the sunset itself is what they perceive the most. For others, it is the smell of the sea, and so on. And for a special few, they experience the entirety of the moment in all of its magnificent complexity. So learning is a sunset at the beach.
Seriously, think about it. What you learn on a day to day basis comes at you in a variety of ways. Many people learn by watching television. What they see and hear is what they remember. Some people learn by feeling or manipulating objects by hand. Remember those days when you could spend hours playing with a simple set of colored blocks? Well, believe it or not you were learning. Others learn by reading or writing. They can look at a diagram for putting a shelf together all day long, but can’t figure out how it works until they read worded directions. Based on New Zealand teacher Neil Fleming’s
research, people fall into four main categories of learning. They learn from visual models such as graphs and charts. They learn from hearing what is taught or listening to directions which comes under the auditory category. They learn from reading or writing something. And they learn from the kinesthetic model which is the “perceptual preference related to the use of experience and practice (simulated or real).” (Fleming, VARK a Guide to Learning Styles). This basically means that if you practice or experience something, then you are more likely to learn it. Grouped together, the four main categories of learning
GIS teacher writes new Lonely Planet guide book by Kenny Johnson A travel writer based near Pattaya has given a TEDx talk about his travel experiences. Mark Beales, who teaches at Garden International School (GIS) near Pattaya, gave the TEDx talk in Bangkok. He spoke about how his travel experiences had helped him gain a better understanding of other cultures and people. These included travelling to
India to interview victims of child servitude and helping teach hilltribes in Laos. TED is a non-profit organization that aims to spread ideas through talks. Mark also recently cowrote the new Lonely Planet Thailand book and Thailand’s Islands & Beaches’ guides. He updated the Koh Chang and Eastern Seaboard chapter for the 16th edition of the guide. This features the famous islands of Koh Samet and Koh Chang and Pattaya itself. Mark said: "Going on the road for Lonely Planet is always a huge thrill. For this trip I was pleased to be able to add some new resorts and uncover some fantastic new places to visit. "Thailand continues to
styles make up the acronym VARK. That is all the proof we need to realize that humans learn in a variety of ways. It may seem obvious, and so it is. But it is a major step for most people to cognitively recognize our learning differences and use that knowledge to improve how we both learn and teach. Even so, it should matter to those who have a huge impact in a normal person’s most rapid period of learning… teachers. Why should teachers need to understand their students’ learning styles? Well, if little Jonnie learns best by reading and writing, then
lecturing him isn’t going to do much good if you want him to succeed. In contrast, Suzie won’t get a thing out of repetitive writing if she learns best by listening to a teacher. Classes are filled with learners of different styles and it’s the teacher’s job to attempt to get through to each and every student. So what’s the solution? One answer is to teach in a way that mixes the styles so that every student gets a chance to learn with their strengths. For example, emphasize a lecture by writing on the board and draw on visual aids from a projector, and then give the students an activity that lets them
experience firsthand what you’ve just taught them. This may not be the most elegant solution to the problem, but creative teachers should be able to build a combination of learning styles into their lessons which satisfy the needs of the different learners in their classroom. So learning may be a sunset at the beach, where the students experience each lesson in a variety or combination of different ways. But teaching is a job where the teachers definitely deserve a vacation. Jay Chambers is a Year 1 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

The very entrance to hell my dear! The shock horror sequence of 1961
Although Vincent Price starred in several Roger Corman adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, it is undoubtedly The Pit and the Pendulum which was his most successful. Not to mention most profitable for American International executives. Set in sixteenth century Spain, a young Englishman (John Kerr) visits a forbidding
castle to investigate his sister’s mysterious death. After several horrific revelations and ghost-like appearances with a haunting harpsichord refrain, the unfortunate Brit is strapped to a torture device by his looney-toons brother in law (Vincent Price) during the spell binding finale. To die in agony is the destiny of man, says the torturer.
The shock climax is where Elizabeth (Barbara Steele), Vincent Price’s faithless wife who once faked her own death, is accidentally left trapped in the iron maiden, alive but gagged. As the door to the torture chamber is slammed shut for the final time, there is a camera concentration on Elizabeth’s horror struck eyes and the screeching of violins. The author Stephen King described it as the most important moment in post 1960 horror movies. The Pit and the Pendulum was a bigger hit than its predecessor The Fall of the House of Usher and made over two million US dollars, a tidy sum in the early 1960s. Most reviewers loved it, citing Price’s convincing performance as the unstable noble driven to madness by his scheming wife, the imaginative photography of the eerie castle and its dark secrets and the workings of the torture device – all done without the CGI special effects which were unknown at the time. The movie had a great deal
of influence on later events. It persuaded American International executives to produce more Poe related films on a regular basis, the last in the series being The Tomb of Ligeia in 1965. There were seven in all. They can be criticized for going over the same themes again and again – notably premature burial – but several (including The Raven in 1963) were directed by Corman more as comedies than horror flicks in order to vary the story lines. The Pit and the Pendulum’s tentacles reached down into many films of the 1970s and 1980s. The nightmarish flashback sequences which plant the seeds of Price’s madness, can be seen for example in Antonio Margheriti’s Castle of Blood and its remake Castle of Blood. Stephen King pointed out that the tomb opening sequence, in which a hideously decayed corpse is shown, was a deliberate attempt to terrify the audience which was followed by many other movie directors. Curiosity about the contents of a coffin
were never more gruesomely satisfied. The opening credits of the movie are spectacular. Sludgy ink is splashed onto the lenses, then a matte painting conjures up a castle by the edge of the sea, both abstract and Gothic, the two splattering styles which Roger Corman contrasts
and climatically blurs across the screen. As Price tells his guest at the castle, “it was the malignant atmosphere of the castle which caused my wife’s death” even as he confesses “I am the spawn of a depraved mind.” They don’t make ‘em like that any more with all that Freudian hysteria. Perhaps it’s just as well.

Ideas to surprise your husband: 5 Things you can do that’ll bring a smile to his face
There’s nothing like the drudgery of routine to put out the fires in a relationship – especially after you have a few years of marriage under your belt.
Keep the passion alive with a random romantic gesture to let your husband know why you spend your life with him, and why you fell in love with him in the first place. These are just a few of the little things you can do to light up your husband’s face, as well as help build a stronger foundation for you relationship to stand on. 1. Repair His Worn Out Treasures
3. Write Out A “Thank You” List
We all start to take the little things your husband does for you to keep the household operating smoothly for granted – such as taking out the garbage, weeding the garden, or mowing the lawn. With so much to do, men can often feel like they are leaving work to go to a second job. Show your appreciation of his efforts by writing out a “Thank You” list. You could also make sure he gets a nice big kiss on the cheek for doing a great job. Science has even proven that couples who are generous to each other are the happiest – as discovered by a study completed at the University of Virginia’s National Marriage Project. An obvious display of gratitude will make him feel very much appreciated – something all men crave. 4. A Surprise Holiday
A watch given to him by his grandfather or his dad’s old leather jacket may have seen better days. Whatever it is, show him you love him by restoring something he treasures so much. He’ll forever appreciate the gesture for your thoughtfulness and understanding. 2. Handmade Gifts
Give your husband a call at work and tell him he needs to get straight home from work when his shift is over. Make sure the car is packed for a weekend getaway before he arrives home and ready for a weekend trip out of town. Keep the location a secret and just get in the car and drive. Surprise him with a bed and breakfast or a couple of nights of the high-flying lifestyle in the big city. Regardless of what it is, he’s sure to have a ton of fun. A more lavish gift of time away can be had if you have vacation time coming up. Imagine his surprise when he sees tickets to an exotic overseas destination. 5. Surprise Him With Event Tickets
Handmade gifts can often be the most treasured and certainly have a lot of sentimental value due to the time they know you have invested in them. Use skills you already possess to create a special something for your husband – or you could learn something new. Artwork for his desk at work or an item of clothing are all within the realms of possibility. Other skills you may already possess or could learn are crotchet, sewing, or knitting. With these skills you could make your husband a unique sweater, vest, gloves, or even a scarf. Make the gift more personal by adding his initials into the design. Paintings and sculpture are also excellent gift ideas.
(Jan 23-Feb22) Aquarius You feel you are working
too hard in the Land of Smiles but this is because, like most Aquarians abroad, you are a lazy sod. You also have an unduly high opinion of your own self-importance. Thus your hope to have a commemoration stamp issued in your honor is absolutely ridiculous unless you can prove the earth is flat or persuade Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions. P i s c e s ( Fe b 2 3 - M a r 2 2 ) Treasure things of lasting value and avoid chasing pointless ambitions such as becoming a Rotary club big-shot in Thailand or winning the underground lottery. We all put our foot in our mouth at one time or another but you carry this to silly extremes, for example trying to the report a Thai policeman for parking illegally on Second Road. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) Your sordid sex life is going to land you in all sort of lamentable situations. You simply can’t blow kisses to transvestites here and then be surprised when your pocket is picked. Try to avoid poking your nose in where it’s not wanted. It’s a really bad idea to ask foreign ladies on the Walking Street if they have a work permit. Taurus (Apr23-May22) The sense of adventure that encourages you to explore your fantasies needs to be controlled before you get into really hot water. Breaking the pin on the golf course every time you miss a putt is one such instance. Another is asking the captain if you can observe the stars on a daytime flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is just another daft idea. Gemini (May23-Jun22) With the next full moon, it’s likely you will start to feel itchy. This has nothing to do with becoming a trainee werewolf but is a regrettable sign of a sexually transmitted disease. You are full of excessively optimistic ambitions. Having a hip replacement will not do anything to improve your non-existent sex life and could prove a total waste of money. Cancer ( Jun23-Jul22) You can be a genius in matters which really interest you such as comparing the price of yoghurts in various supermarkets or advising your neighbors on changing their electricity meter. But it’s a pity that perfecting your skills in such areas doesn’t carry on in other facets of your life such as washing properly under your arms and doing something about your bad breath.
by Madam Zyra
(Jul23-Aug22) What Leo looks good on the surface may well prove to be a big problem unless you do some research first. Buying a beautiful condo will avail you nothing if the builders have forgotten to install a toilet. Sidestep sticky situations which could bog you down. Asking the masseuse if you can pay the following day is frankly not acceptable behavior. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) Finding anything virginal about you would be an impossible task of mind boggling proportions. You came to Pattaya to consummate your sex desires and then found out you prefer to get rolling drunk every night. It’s hardly surprising that you never seem able to answer quiz questions, especially the round on science and nature. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Your biggest problem right now is being too naïve. You should be asking why your partner removed the safety rail on the balcony of the fifteenth floor condominium unit you moved into recently. Asking the security guard to look after your bank book when you are out of town is another very bad idea, especially if he says he can also put your jewelry in his wall safe. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) Put your powers of analysis to work and stop digging far too deeply into your pockets. Trying to pay the baht bus driver with a thousand baht note is so stupid especially as you are only making a short trip down Beach Road. What you need is some sensible financial advice but this doesn’t mean you should believe everything you hear at the expat clubs. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Sometime in the new year you may be tempted to get involved with a worthy organization that brightens your life. But matters can prove to be just a tad disappointing. Becoming a Rotary activist may mean little more than selling raffle tickets to your friends and neighbors. Making new friends at the chess club is hard as nobody speaks much. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan22) As the Milky Way prepares to ebb, your biggest problem right now is being too cautious in your everyday life. There really is no need to carry a baton and a pepper spray as you go round the supermarket aisles. Because you are odd people tend to dislike you. It’s not a good idea to tell everyone that you have applied to be a volunteer mortuary attendant.
If you know his favorite band is coming to town or his favorite sports team is playing at the local arena, you could show your love by surprising him with tickets to the event. You may not be particularly into the sport or the music but this just makes the gift all that more meaningful if you can share this part of his life with him. You’ll be smiling and having fun because he’ll be smiling and having fun. For additional information on romance, health, fitness, beauty, skin care, hair care and more, go to www. urbanewomen.com.

Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf Golf from the Bunker Boys from BJ's by Derek Brook
Flight winners with one of BJ’s finest Khao Kheow (Stableford) The cars should drive to this course on their own, and one day maybe they will, as we go there every month at least once. Last trip was last month for Poppy Golf, and so on this day off we went on our monthly trip. The test for this day was to be the C and A nines in that order. As usual at most courses, the C nine is the least favourite as they always seem to be a bit of an add on. Here at K.K. it seems to me it is also not as good as the other two, but it is still a really hard test. It seems harder than the other two and somehow a bit less smooth. Starting on the C nine we start on a par 5 where the drive is important as hook the ball and it is in the water and push it and it is out of bounds. A tough hole to start on and a hole you must play three really good shots to get near the green with water all up the left. It does not get any easier and with a strong wind the day was going to get a bit difficult. And it did for many of the players. We then went onto the A nine and this is supposed to be the most difficult nine by stroke. On
this day it was very difficult, especially with a strong wind. Mind, the fairways were in good condition and the greens rolled fast and true. All good things must come to an end, and it was through to the showers and into transport for the trip back. This was as usual a trip that took time as this time of afternoon is usually busy. Mind, I do not usually notice as this is my time for ‘resting my eyes’. Soon back it was into the results. In the A flight, 0 to 17, the winner was John Davis with a fine 38 points ahead of a countback on 36 points that saw André Van Dyk in second and Peter Bailey in third. In the B flight we had the best score of the day when Bob Britton had a very good 40 points. We then had a countback on 35 points that saw Carole Kubicki in second and Tom Herrington in third. The new results are from the best front nine won by John Edwards and the best back nine won by Mick Coghlan. Then it was time to relax and have a few cold ones! T.T.F.N. Crystal Bay (white tees) – Stableford A lovely day for golf on this public holiday but on arriving at the course we were advised that there were no buggies available and that we would have to wait until other golfers completed their round and returned the buggies. This necessitated redoing our groups so that buggy users were at the back of the field and the walkers could head out first. The course was in good condition and the greens well prepared but bunkers left a lot to be desired. A pleasant surprise was that the club had purchased new buggies which were a huge improvement. Neil Carter won the count out in A flight with 19 points on the back nine to Geoff's 18 and in the B flight Alan Ashton beat Gordon Melia with an excellent 21 points to 15. All the same old faces warming up for our club championship starting on Wednesday. Results: A Flight (0-16.2) 1st - Neil Carter (13) 37 points oco 2nd - Geoff Parker (14) 37 points 3rd - Colin Gregg (11) 35 points B Flight (16.3+) 1st - Alan Ashton (21) 34 points 2nd - Gordon Melia (16) 34 points 3rd - Michael Brett (33) 33 points Near Pins: Takeshi Hakozaki, Neil Carter, Michael Brett and Colin Gregg. Pattavia – Medal First day of the club championship. This year Pattavia was selected as an excellent course that was a fair test and not too difficult. We arrived to find the
course very busy and they were importing caddies from Greenwood to meet the demand. The greens are fast and tricky here so those who depend on their caddy for reading the greens had a decided advantage if they scored a local Pattavia caddy. The scores were very close with 11 players within two shots of the lead. Ken Davison, Keith Norman and Michael Brett all had net 71, Tony Scambler, John Hughes and Gez Williams net 72 and Les Cobban, Robby Watts, Tony Robbins, Peter Allen and Geoff Cox with net 73. Shot of the day however went to Neil Carter on the short par 3 13th hole. His tee shot was shanked into the water hazard so he frustratingly teed up again and hit his ball straight into the hole for a regulation par! Results: A Flight (0-15.3) 1st - Keith Norman (14) net 71 points 2nd - Tony Scrambler (13) 72 points 3rd - Gez Williams (14) 72 points B Flight (15.4+) 1st - Ken Davidson (24) 71 points 2nd - Mike Brett (19) 71 points 3rd - John Hughes (20) 72 points Near Pins: Gez Williams, Les Cobban, Keith Norman and Keith Hemmings. Mountain Shadow (white tees) A little tension was in the air as we started the final round with half the field in contention. Keith Norman, Les Cobban, and Gez Williams were the hot tips with limping Tony Scambler and the injured John Hughes (who spends more time in the physios than Tiger Woods) the dark horses. However almost everybody had a
poor day with only one person playing to handicap. Robby Watts was the lone star as he blitzed the Mt Shadow course with a terrific 5 over par net 65 to clearly win the club championship by 10 shots from Gez Williams with Tony Scambler third on countback. Robby also joined the elite group of Geoff Parker, Alan Freeman and Mark Stanley in winning all four near pins. A great day out for Robby who was awarded the beautiful crystal trophy and he reciprocated with a drink for all the golfers. Robby easily won the A division with 45 Stableford points followed by Tony Scambler 34 points and Ian Rattray. B Division was won by Gerry Cooney 34 points with Andy Brady second with 33 points and a chastened John Hughes 30 points third. Following the competition the players enjoyed a great meal put on at the “M” Club. Results: A Division (0-17) 1st - Robby Watts (12) 45 points 2nd - Tony Scambler (13) 34 points cb 3rd - Ian Rattray (7) 34 points B Division (17+) 1st - Gerry Cooney (19) 34 points 2nd - Andy Brady (18) 33 points 3rd - John Hughes (20) 30 points Near Pins: Robby Watts (4)
Takeshi and Bernie Slashing Victories On a fine and “cooler morning”, 23 golfers set off in cars and buses to the Crystal Bay Golf Club in high spirits. For most those spirits lifted when “Captain” for the day, Mark Stapleton put the start sheet under the shorter yellow tees. We then expected some good scores, but weren’t ready for what would unfold. There was drama in the We got away on time and the course was in great condition and certainly worth 1,450 baht green fee, caddie, and shared cart for a Sunday. Plutaluang used to be one of those courses you play in high season due to high rates elsewhere, but not anymore... it's a nice course in its own right. Recently we have played all four 9s. Was always an interesting layout and now it's in great condition. Winner of the day was Deryl Neufeld with 37 points off a 23 course HCP and second Tom Marshall with 35 points off a 7 HCP. It was Deryl's last game for a while as he is heading back to work for a month, but he can't wait to get back. A fitting farewell present.
locker rooms before the start as Fred Dineley had left home minus just about everything he needed. A quick whip around managed to get him rigged out (a singlet was not chic on a golf course). Crystal Bay is not usually gushed over in the reports as it is not as picturesque as a lot of others, but this day the fairways were well grassed and mown, greens on “C” nine looked a little shabby but played truly and the “B” nine greens are still faster than “C”. Bunkers are a little wet and compacted. Not for the purist (but helped me get out easier!). Now to Takeshi and Bernie… Two flights today and these two sizzled. Takeshi (handicap 15) on comeback after injury and Bernie (handicap 32) after a layoff from golf showed that being freshened up can do a world of good for your game. Sometimes. Local Sports Bunker Boys Golf Pleasant Valley, (blue tees) Stableford A smaller field than normal since this course has unfairly been labeled difficult but this is not the case as today the presentation was good with a few greens undergoing maintenance work which did not detract from the enjoyment of playing this layout. Keith Smithson made it look almost easy beating his handicap by two shots and playing the last six holes five under par including an eagle on the last hole. Gerry Cooney is warming up for his assault on our Club Championship and we need to watch his progress next week. Mike Brett who has made Pattaya his new home played consistently and we will see his name often in the results. Results: 1st - Keith Smithson (2) 38 points 2nd - Gerry Cooney (19) 35 points 3rd - Mike Brett (20) 33 points Near Pins: Gerry Cooney, Mike Brett, Keith Smithson, Mike Lloyd Khao Kheow, B & C, (yellow tees) Stableford You cannot keep a good golfer down and Keith Smithson proved he was no flash in the pan by coming out and winning his second game in a row with a fine level par score edging out Keith Norman who is also enjoying some form by two shots. In the B flight Peter Allen wins again for the second time in two weeks beating Gerry Cooney on a count back. Gordon Melia after his two wins last week crept into third. However this being the last game of the month we were able to crown the golfer of the month, Ross Schiffke who notched up an impressive 50 points by the 22nd of the month and no one was able to catch him even with three games still to play. Ross can collect his trophy when he returns but in the meantime we enjoyed a round of drinks to celebrate his win. 3rd - Gordon Melia (17) 35 points Near Pins: Mike Lloyd, Jimmy Carr (2), Keith Norman Emerald Stableford We arrived at Emerald to find the course busy with a couple of five balls holding up the field. Greens were hard and lightening fast, even faster than any local course over the last few years. Unfortunately, they hadn’t cut new holes for some time and the holes were very ragged and worn. The rough in a number of places close to the greens was very long this made things difficult with the hard greens not holding and shots running into high rough. Many of our players like this course but they described it as scruffy with buggy riders complaining of the lack of brakes on the downhill sections. Scores in A flight was not so good with only Gaz Williams making 36 points. B flight scores were much better with an outstanding round of 40 points by Gordon Melia. Tom and Mick Golden at Treasure Hill by Derek Brook
Lots going on at the Tropical Golfers. The year is winding down to another end of the year party, a new Golfer of the Month, and Golfer of the Year. Also the weather has been great. What's not to be happy about? Busy season is upon us and 21 golfers headed out to Treasure Hill to challenge this difficult but interesting course. Treasure Hill has a very good rate now for both walkers and riders. The course is in fine condition. What's not to like? Well, it’s a bit hard! There are courses that are difficult because, well, they are hard, and courses that are difficult because they are tricky and interesting. Treasure Hill is in the second category. It is a never relax

course as almost every hole has a major hazard. Risk/Reward is the name of the game here as most holes leave options. Playing the slightly forward yellow tees we were off on time. How would the players navigate today? A-Flight (0-18): Last month's Golfer of the Month Tom Herrington (c/h) kept his cool and gathered up 39 points and won on countback over Peter Bailey (18). Good golfing, guys! Returning Takeshi Hakozaki (16) took third with 37 points. B-Flight (19+): Mick Coghlan (25) once again has his photo in the paper with an impressive 37 points. Mick has been a regular winner lately, and easily topped his flight as the next place went to Dave Cooper (26) with 33 points, and then Nigel Perry (25) with 31. Near pins: Peter Bailey, John Davis, Mick Coghlan, Brian Parish Long putt: John Edwards Best front nine (non winner): Landis Brooks Best back nine (non winner): Graham Buckingham Sunday golf! The Tropical Golfers now offer Sunday golf. Competition is optional, and the emphasis will be on more affordable courses. Sign up at BJ's Holiday Lodge.
A Medal for the Mailman! Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees It was a very busy week for the van and Capt. Phil as five rounds of golf were on the calendar. Today was Green Valley and the course, as well as the weather, was perfect. The podium was a bit crowded as a threeway tie for second place had to be shared by teacher Tommy Balch, Peter LeNoury and Gary Emmett, who now calls Pattaya home. Gary has been joining us for years on his holidays from Oz, and has finally made the big move to Pattaya! Another big mover was Ian Brimble, and as the only bloke to better his handicap, Ian deservedly takes the trophy for today’s play. Honourable mention must go to Bob Mulholland who snatched the Caddy Smile near pin from a field of 26. Results: 1st –Ian Brimble (7) 37 points T -2nd – Gary Emmett (17) 36 points T -2nd – Peter LeNoury (13) 36 points T -2nd – Tom Balch (30) 36 points Eastern Star – Stableford – White Tees We didn’t exactly plan on playing here on Tuesday, but management gave us a rain check voucher from last Wednesday so what the heck? The Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course was nice and dry and in very good condition. Results: T -1st –David Dietz (19) 37 points T -1st– Phil Smedley(13) 37 points 3rd – Kenny Aihara (4) 35 points Mountain Shadow – Monthly Medal– Blue Tees This is a much anticipated event these days as a field of 32 golfers took to the links of Mountain Shadow for our Monthly Medal. The podium was full of familiar names and one of our regulars who has been trying for three and a half years finally came good. For starters, we had Simon Marsden winning the Caddy Smile near pin today. Sharing third place with a net 73, Kenny Aihara and Peter LeNoury are no strangers to the leaderboard. Today they were a couple of putts off the pace but still better than many. Ian Brimble has had his name high on the results list for a few weeks now and if it weren’t for the countback, it would have been another victory for Ian. The mailman had another idea and yes, Dave Ferris took the win by countback for his very first (of many) T.G.C. Monthly Medal! Kenny alerted Dave with a phone call, he didn’t think the score was good enough, so Dave raced back for the presentation and we all thanked him for a serious bell ringing for all the lads in the house. Nice going, buddy, the Antigua shirt is in the works!

weather greeted us as we headed up the 331 for today’s golf. This is probably the best value in town at the moment as a mere 1,150 baht gets you a green fee, caddy fee and cart! By the way, the course was in excellent condition. Capt. Phil opted for a challenging day and yellow tees off 6,300 yards were chosen for the comp today. One special moment was the Caddy Smile near pin hole where we saw Larry Gilliam strike a beauty just 10 feet from the pin. Behind Larry’s group was the deadly Kenny Aihara and it was all whoopin’ and hollerin’ as Larry watched Kenny’s ball settle in at 11 feet from the pin! Whew! Larry won it, and also got down in three putts, such is golf! Chicken Dinner Winner went to Mark Wood with a 32 point round on this tough track. Ian Brimble showed in the frame once again as he and Dusty Miller shared second place with 30 ticks in the box.

Khao Kheow A & B – Stableford – White Tees Lovely to get back to Khao Kheow again and play this great Pete Dye layout. The A and B tracks were the assignment today and a full sheet of 32 golfers were in the hunt. Ian Brimble was in the papers again as his was the closest Caddy Smile near pin on the famous B-8 island green as well as making the birdie. Tony Mac was on the third step with 32 and Stevie Dunn second on 35 Stableford points. Highest tally of the week went to Nigel Hensen who racked up 44 points out there today off his 26 handicap. Well played, Nigel!

You & Your Pets
Cut the cost of pet care It seems like the cost of living in Pattaya is on the rise for everything from consumer items to people food and, yes, even pet food as well as supplies and medical care. How can you save money on health care for your pet? Here are a few tips: Don’t be stingy with visits to the vet. Most importantly, have your dog or cat examined every year. In the long run, it is more expensive—and risky—to treat illnesses than to protect against them. It’s also a good idea to shop veterinary practices by comparing fees for preventative care. Speaking of preventative care, recognize that some vaccines are optional, while others are essential in preventing serious diseases. Never skip any shots that are mandatory for your pet’s protection, but do talk to your vet about personalizing your pet’s vaccine protocol to save on unnecessary shots. You also can save money by having your dog or cat neutered. The relatively inexpensive procedure not only ensures that you won’t have a house full of little furry creatures, it also prevents serious health problems, including uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers. You probably know not to feed sugary items to your pet, but that doesn’t mean he or she will not suffer dental problems requiring expensive treatment. To preclude dental diseases, which can lead to heart and kidney problems, brush your pet’s teeth regularly. Start a dental routine to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. Ask your veterinarian what products to use and how often.
Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/ Don’t use toothpaste made for people, most of which contain fluoride and may irritate your pet's stomach. As we’ve often reminded readers, you must protect your pet from parasites. Flea and tick infestations can cause a host of costly medical problems from minor skin irritations to life-threatening blood loss, not to mention human ailments. Stick with a topical flea and tick solution to keep the critters at bay. Make sure to only use products as directed, and never use a product intended for a dog on a cat. Don’t allow your pet to overeat and become obese. That, too, can lead to severe health problems. Get advice from your vet on appropriate amounts of food to feed your pet, and use good quality pet food; it’s often more cost-effective than a homemade diet. Finally, groom your pet at home yourself and save the price of visits to your groomer or vet. At least provide regular nail-trimmings and brushings. It’s good for your pet, it will reduce the amount of hair floating around your home, and your cats will have fewer hairballs. One last thought for you smokers out there: quit-for the sake of your pet and everyone in your household. Secondhand smoke is no joke for pets—it can cause asthma, bronchitis, lymphoma and oral, nasal and lung cancers. Quit now and you’ll save money on vet bills as well as cigarettes. At the very least, avoid smoking around your pet.

This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his 3 brothers and sisters. Sadly he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home just like his siblings. As you can see he is grown up now and still waiting to be chosen.
Splash
This friendly girl came to us with 2 lovely kittens both of which were quickly re-homed. Splash has lost the sight in her left eye but that does not hinder her at all but, sadly, it means that no-one has chosen her yet.
Bella
This lovely girl has been with us for quite a few years now. She is very friendly and just loves to be made a fuss of. She generally keeps herself out of the way of the other cats here and enjoys lazing about the place as if she was the Queen of Sheba.
Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being. Bobby-Bobtail
Hit by Car
This friendly soul has been with us for a few years now. She was always a bit shy when people came to visit but seems to have come out of her shell over the last few months. She is happy to be an indoor cat too so would be ideal in a secure apartment.
An animal in pain is more likely to bite. So if your dog or cat is hit by a vehicle, before moving it put a muzzle over his snout; use a scarf, belt, or towel (note: don’t muzzle the animal if it is vomiting). Get the animal off the road by gently sliding it onto a towel or blanket. Don't lift the animal. Make sure it’s warm, as it may be in shock. If it seems to have any broken bones, do your best to not move it too much.
Going to the Dogs... If you can look at a dog and not feel vicarious excitement and affection, you must be a cat.
Cat Corner Tip Hold the Milk
~Carrie Latet Most of Santa’s reindeer have malesounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrati. Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system.
The idea that cats thrive on milk is a myth. So whether you have a cat or several kittens, hold the milk. They don’t need it. In fact, most cats are lactose intolerant; they cannot properly digest the sugars in milk. It could give them diarrhea. While some little tigers have no problem digesting milk, again—they don't need it. So, most vets say you should skip it.
