British visas now “tougher” A

ccording to a number of unsuccessful Thai applicants for visas to visit the UK, there has been a “toughening up” of the rules in recent months. They explain the increased difficulty of obtaining a visit with reference to the Brexit referendum last June which mandated the withdrawal of Britain from the European Union in due course. However, British authorities have denied that the Brexit decision has led to any change in policy in awarding visas. A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who declined to be named as he was not authorized to speak officially on the matter, said he was not aware of any instructions to embassies to change their policies postreferendum. He explained that, in any case, Britain is not part of the Schengen visa scheme operating in most

European states. Many British visas issued in Thailand by the British embassy are either visit or settlement visas. The visit visa, which lasts up to six months,

is for tourism purposes or to meet up with family in UK or to spend time with a partner. The sponsor will normally be settled in the UK and be able to show a reasonable

income (no minimum is formally set), including bank statements for six months, and long-term access to a suitable residence. Continued on page 4

2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta open for entries The 13th edition of the multi awardwinning Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina is open for entries. To be held May 4 to 8, 2017 at South East Asia’s largest marina, Ocean Marina, Top of the Gulf Regatta regularly attracts more than 250 boats and since opening for entries late last year organisers have received strong interest and early sign-ups. “We opened for entries in mid-December last year and have had a lot of early enquiries for the 2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta. Already the one-design Platu class has 11 confirmed teams with crew coming from more than 10 countries, and we’re expecting a largerthan-normal dinghy fleet this year due to the Thailand Optimist National Championships being the last junior sailing event before the Optimist World Championships in July at Royal Varuna Yacht Club,” said William Gasson, co-chairman, Top of the Gulf Regatta Organising Committee. “In addition to the IRC, Cruising and multihull classes, we have also introduced an option for the regional TP52 fleet and similar

type boats to have their own dedicated class and courses,” added Gasson. Growing the charter fleet In addition to catering to the current fleets, organisers see a growing trend of international sailors wishing to charter boats for the regatta. Targeting key sailing populations in the Austral-Asian region and working with charter operators, organisers have created a charter section on the event website that promotes charter boats available for the regatta (http:// topofthegulfregatta.com/charters). “There are many sailors around the region and especially in Australia that are interested to race at the regatta if suitable boats are available for charter. Recognising this, we have developed a dedicated charter section on the regatta website and are working with charter operators to market a selection of boats from dinghies upto IRC class and multihulls,” added Gasson. Boats such as Baby Tonga (Beneteau First 53), Resolution of Whitby (Beneteau 523 Oceanis), PH Plus+ (Elliot 46) and the famous

Cassidy 55 Australian Maid, as well as Platus and a selection of multihulls and dinghies, are available for charter. 2017 Classes Three IRC classes are planned, as well as the option for a “Class 0” for TP52 and similar type yachts. These will be complemented by a cruising class, the popular one-design Platu class who will be competing for the prestigious Coronation Cup, and an Ocean Multihulls class. The dinghy fleet will be split into two classes – Single-Handed Monohull Dinghy and Double-Handed Monohull Dinghy, with further divisional splits possible – and there are options for beach catamaran classes also. Sailors in the Optimist class will be competing for the Thailand Optimist National

Championships – Thailand’s top junior sailing competition – which is expected to see a fleet of 150+ youth sailors from around the world competing this year. Returning for the second year will be the IOM Class RC Yachts – a class of radiocontrolled yachts which will race just outside the marina and is proving to be a popular class across the region. The 2017 Notice of Race is online at http:// topofthegulfregatta.com/notice-of-race and boats can enter at http://topofthegulfregatta. com/entry. British visas now “tougher” Continued from page 1

The applicant must be able to show by paperwork how he or she lives economically – bank book or cash transfers from the sponsor to Thailand – and has to offer clear evidence of the reasons to return to Thailand after the holiday is over. Evidence here could be a dependent family or a job being held open or ownership of property or land. There is also the need to show ongoing contact between sponsor and applicant when they are separated, most likely social media proof or evidence of regular phone contact together with photos taken over time. Settlement visas, which allow the applicant to live in the UK, are usually awarded to Thais who wish to join a “settled” UK citizen, typically but not necessarily a spouse. Detailed information has to be provided on the history of the relationship as well as documentation on family connections, any previous marriages and a minimum income earned by the sponsor of 18,600 pounds a year. This minimum rises if there are dependent Thai children included in the application. If the sponsor is selfemployed the paperwork required is particularly complex. The granting of a settlement visa means that the Thai applicant can work in the UK. All visas are subject to security and criminal background checks. It is very difficult for the Thai applicant’s wider kin, for example parents or nephews and nieces, to be included as part of a successful settlement visa application. As evidence that British visit visas are becoming harder to obtain, several disappointed Thai applicants showed their rejection letter to this

COLDPLAY A HEAD FULL OF DREAMS TOUR Date: 7 April 2017, Friday Venue: Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok Activities: Following the announcement of a run of Asian stadium shows for the acclaimed A Head Full of Dreams Tour, which includes the band’s first-ever concerts in Taiwan, the Philippines and South Korea, Coldplay are returning to Thailand. newspaper. One Thai woman in her early 30s had visited her British boyfriend for three months in 2015 and was hoping for a similar period from Christmas 2016. The couple had proof of an ongoing relationship for several years and the sponsor’s finances and accommodation were in good order. The rejection letter acknowledged that the woman had visited the UK on a previous occasion and had kept to all British immigration rules, but pointed out that she had failed to provide adequate evidence of how, at present, she lived financially from day to day. The woman in fact had provided evidence of admittedly modest Western Union transfers from her boyfriend and had stated that she worked part-time for her uncle on a market stall. She explained that her uncle simply paid cash as and when business was good and that there was no requirement in Thailand to provide wage slips or documentary backup in this type of informal arrangement. Her point was that this level of scrutiny was not enforced in the previous and successful application. Pattaya Today has seen several other recent rejection letters, most

of which do concern detailed questioning of the applicant’s current income even when proof was provided of an overseas sponsor’s cash transfers. One applicant was refused a visit visa after failing to provide evidence she was working at a pig farm. She had a healthy bank balance, but no way of proving how the cash got there. A male applicant, who was hoping to visit his boyfriend in UK, was refused permission after the foreigner’s name on the Western Union transfers was not that of his partner. The applicant had explained that his partner’s next-door neighbour had actually sent the remittance on the sponsor’s behalf. Pattaya Today has no way of verifying these claims by applicants. But the main points they make are that they had been granted visas in the past and that their material circumstances had not changed in the meantime. It is also undoubtedly true that some visa applications are submitted without due attention to detail and may even include false information in a futile attempt to trick the awarding authorities. A London-based entry clearance officer said, “There is comprehensive information on the government websites. But what is most important is for applicants and sponsors to back up all their claims with up-to-date paperwork.” He added that the days had long past when applicants were subjected to an in-depth interview by an unfriendly person behind a grille. “Nowadays the paperwork is what counts, perhaps supplemented by a short telephone interview.”

News EVA Air and TAT sign MOU aimed at boosting North American tourism The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Taiwanese airline, EVA Airways Corporation, formalized and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at working on joint tourism promotion strategies that will boost numbers of visitors from the USA and Canada. Y u t h a s a k S u p a s o r n , TAT governor said, “This MOU will help us to target tourists from

the Americas – one of our most important and fastest growing markets. EVA Air is a vital link between North America and Asia as there are currently no direct flights from the USA and Canada to Thailand. By working with EVA Air on tourism initiatives, we can help get word out about Thailand’s attractions and boost visitor numbers even more in 2017 and beyond.”

Followed by the MOU signing ceremony, the Project Implementation Workshop between EVA Air representatives and TAT directors from the North America and Asia markets will be set up in order to discuss their marketing collaboration for long and short haul markets. EVA Air currently operates 80 flights per week between North America and Taiwan, including three daily flights from Los Angeles, two daily flights from San Francisco, 10 flights a week from Seattle and five flights a week from Vancouver on the West Coast as well as two daily flights from New York and five flights per week from Toronto on the East Coast. The airline also offers daily service from Houston and four flights per week from Chicago in the USA. Passengers can then connect with flights to Bangkok on any of EVA’s 26 flights per week on the TaipeiBangkok route, which was recently increased from 17 flights a week to meet the demands of long haul passengers. Of the total passengers travelling on EVA Air’s Taipei-

Bangkok routes, about 50 percent are from North America and Europe. Golden Kou, spokesman of EVA Air, said “We are delighted that this MOU has marked another significant cooperation between TAT and EVA Airways to promote Thailand as a short haul destination for Taiwanese tourists and long haul destination for travellers from North America”. TAT also has plans to open a new office in Canada which can help offer services to Canadian tourists heading to the Kingdom. In 2015, Thailand attracted 827,110 tourists from the US market,

a rise of 12.61 per cent over the previous year. Of the total, 50.44 per cent came from the West Coast and 49.56 flew from the East Coast. Tourists from this part of the world spent US$146.63 per day and stayed around 13.38 days in the Kingdom. From January to November 2016, a total of 1,236,694 tourists visited Thailand from the Americas, an increase of 13.36 per cent over 2015. Of these increased numbers of travellers, 859,838 came from the USA (an increase of 12.32 per cent), and 216,768 came from Canada (an increase of 7.31 per cent).

Our Community Christmas in Pattaya by Derek Franklin

The Christmas festivities started at the Father Ray Foundation on the morning the 24th December, Christmas Eve, with gift giving at the Vocational School for People with Disabilities. This was followed with the arrival at the Father Ray Day Care Center of Father Christmas. And as he arrived most of the assembled 70 toddlers ran away, screaming in fear as the man whose photos they had all seen was now standing in front of them. But they soon got used to him and ended up climbing all over him and having a great time. Later that morning the children at the Father Ray Children’s Village joined together for an ice-cream and doughnut party, thanks to a sponsor from Singapore. This meant the house mothers could all take a break from cooking lunch as the children never stopped eating until every crumb of doughnut and every drop of ice-cream was gone; though the mothers did have to do an extra load of washing as most children seemed to be wearing more ice-cream than they ate. The following morning, Christmas Day, a special Christmas breakfast was served at the Drop-In Center where all the young children were celebrating Christmas for the very first time.

When you are living in poverty, celebrating Christmas is not a priority. This Christmas may have been their first, but one they will never forget. They wanted to eat lots of fruit, so that is what they got. Pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries and, to everyone’s delight, several punnets of strawberries. Can you believe that some of the children had never tasted a strawberry? Apart from the fruit there were a few tins of chocolate biscuits; well chocolate does grow on trees! For the children at the Father Ray Children’s Home they were once again treated to Christmas lunch by a school in the Australian town of Bendigo, and once again Vientiane Restaurant in Nongprue provided a delicious meal and every child received a gift. On the evening of the 26th, Boxing Day, the children and students from all the projects came together and joined the staff for the annual Christmas party. More than 1,000 sat down for dinner and performances by the children, which were subdued following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol in October. Many children also paid respects to the late King in their performances. A very Happy New Year to all readers from the children and students at the Father Ray Foundation.

Mick & Di The Food Lovers

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com

FOR THE SAKE OF AULD LANG SYNE It used to be the case that hotel restaurants were empty, cavernous spaces full of tables and chairs and no customers. With uninspired food and poor service, they seemed just an afterthought to the business of providing accommodation. The only people there were usually hotel guests too tired or timid to venture out. Today everything has changed; many of the hottest tables around the world are in hotels with non-residents now clamouring to get inside. The highest priority is now given to their restaurants which are these days presided over by executive chefs with enviable pedigrees. Such can be said for many of the Pattaya/Jomtien hotel restaurants Mick and I have visited over the past year, not forgetting, of course, the stand-alone establishments that fuel the city daily with excellent food. One such hotel eatery is T55, named after New York City’s meatpacking district, where the finest beef is on display in big chilled boxes in the butcher’s room. Under the aegis of Executive Chef Asker Skaarup Bay (hailing from Denmark) who brings a wealth of gastro experience and knowledge to this sophisticated but casual restaurant. He optimizes on the current trend of pairing cocktails with steak and their signature Bloody Lager (a twist on the classic Bloody Mary) pairs exceedingly well. Tito’s handmade vodka and lager might not immediately scream good mates, but they get on well together and enjoyed with the legendary French Charolais Tomahawk (B.2,500) or their house Charolais burger (B.650) consisting of 250 grams of premier beef crowned with crispy bacon, avocado, beetroot and the restaurant’s house truffle mayonnaise, it’s a marriage made in heaven. There are alternative options for non-meat eaters. The charred salmon filets are a true lesson in how to prepare this queen of fish. Medium, rare, tender and flaky with a

luminous centre, it’s a standout dish. There’s also BBQ pork belly sliders, chicken and waffles, and a killer US style mac n’ cheese made from Gruyere, Cheddar and Roquefort served with fire-roasted tomatoes and crispy bacon. Masses of other innovative dishes truly make this a must visit venue. T55 New York Grill Room is located in Mövenpick Siam Hotel Pattaya, Na Jomtien Beach. Tel: 033 078 888 or visit www.movenpick.com/pattaya. Centra Maris is the younger sibling of the mighty Centara Grand Mirage. It’s a young funky hotel nestled close by to Na Jomtien Beach and is already receiving compliments and good reviews. Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 10 pm the central table at Coco & Rum is laden with its innovative tapas-style buffet. It’s a sensational sight, polar fresh seafood such as scallops, calamari, and mussels join a first-rate selection of hand-rolled sushi, freshly cut sashimi plus salmon, poached sea bass, fish mousse with prawns and seared tuna. Salads abound with various pastas,

Italian cold cuts the likes of salami, prosciuttos, mortadella and all sorts of other treats including a feast of single bite delicacies. It really is an amazing spread and that’s before you savour the delights of the homemade desserts. Jellies, crème caramel, cakes, and lots more beautifully constructed confections make for a sugarista’s dream. The cost of this gourmet feast is only B.385 net and not only that, if you choose to enjoy a main course to boot the price is still only B.285 net. Centra by Centara Maris Resort Jomtien is located adjacent to Na Jomtien Beach. Tel: 038 103 333 or visit www.centarahotelsresorts.com/ centra/cmj for more details. Tapas Buffet at Coco & Rum

To dine at the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar in the Royal Cliff Hotel is a stellar experience. From the minute you step through the door you are cocooned in luxury and spoilt with thoughtful (almost telepathic) service, the food is exquisite and considering the eminence of this restaurant not extraordinarily pricey. Their 3-course set menu is only B.850 ++. Must-try dishes include the Executive Chef’s (Walter Thenisch) signature plates namely the tomato soup flambéed with gin (B.180). Forget any notion you have of tomato soup – this version takes it to another stratosphere, or the burgundy snails in herb butter (B.350). The lushness of the herbed buttery sauce is divine, drenching the molluscs in superb sumptuousness. Other warm starters include Champagne baked oysters with spinach, shallots and hollandaise sauce, pan-fried Alaskan scallops with Roman artichokes, caper flowers and olive pesto, or from the cold selection, home smoked river trout filet with caraway vinaigrette and lukewarm potato salad. The eponymous grill dishes are, of course, extremely popular. Beef here is certified Angus either from the US Royal Grill Room & Wine Cellar

or Australia. Whole prime American prime rib-eye is presented at table on a butcher’s platter before grilling for you to choose the size/weight of your steak. All served with your choice of baked or roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a selection of sauces, including their famous Napa Valley red wine gravy, it’s a carnivore’s dream. For a lighter plate the fish and crustacean menu offers some crackers: tiger prawns on ratatouille vegetables and grilled asparagus, baked sea bass filet with sautéed spinach and celery crisps and the celebrated Phuket lobster or the pink pepper crusted snow fish medallion on celery mash and red wine reduction (B.680) or the Cajun spiced tuna loin and prawn oil on sautéed peppers, onions and plum tomatoes. Put a sweet ending on your meal with the legendary crepe suzettes flambéed at your table which ignites the senses and puts the final touch of extravagance to the evening. Located in the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel, Pratamnak Road, Pattaya. Tel: 038 250 421 or visit www.royalcliff. com. Open from 6:30 to 10:30 pm (last order) and closed on Tuesdays. Amex, Visa and MasterCard accepted.

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com There are many outstanding restaurants housed in Pattaya and Jomtien’s excellent hotels, so wander in and see for yourself the hidden gems that can be found. The Bang Saray Beach Club has recently been renovated and is now under new management. Under the steerage of the charming manager, Alan Meyhew, the menu reflects the nascent trend of gourmet burgers, breakfast combos, superior sandwiches, bar snacks, nibbles and of course cocktails to casually enjoy a full day of lazing and grazing. What could be nicer than to take breakfast overlooking the bay of Bang Saray with the waves gently lapping at your feet and your eyes feasting on the panoramic vista of sun, sea and sand beyond. All-day English is the quintessential eggs, bacon, pork sausages, baked beans, grilled tomatoes and steakhouse fries (B.280) while the athletes who have jogged down the beach can enjoy the optional healthy style with Greek style yoghurt topped with muesli and fresh fruit (B.150) while the “Continental” is packed with toasted sour dough bread, preserves and freshly steaming coffee. The burgers are big, bodacious affairs made from 180 grams of Australian Angus prime beef and can be customized with Gruyere or blue cheese and rashers of the best bacon plus all the trimmings with prices starting at B.320.

with a choice of sauces. Belgium, of course, is famous for its beer and over a dozen beers are on offer, ranging from Leffe Blond or Dark, Hoegaarden to the famous white beer with an aroma of orange peel, coriander and spice, and the big gun Kasteel Bier with a whopping alcoholic content of 11 percent, to the mysterious monastery beer from the Trappist monks of Rochefort. Served fashionably on a suspended rack, these huge grilled kebabs offer tender chunks of marinated mixed meats and shrimp. Aroi Pub Resto is open daily except Mondays from 12 noon to 10 pm (last orders 9:45 pm). It is situated on Soi 89, Sukhumvit Road which is almost opposite Makro, there is a 7-Eleven on the corner. If you’d like to feel the sand between your toes and the tropical sun on your face while enjoying one of the best pizzas in town head down to Drifters Beach Café (DBC). Eclectic retro rock, frosty beers, perfect thin crust pizzas, jugs of Margaritas and an ace beach location to dream about makes Drifters Beach

Café one of the area's funkiest fun bar-cum-eateries. Nestling on a quiet stretch of Na Jomtien Beach close to the Pinnacle Hotel, it would be hard to improve on this laid-back beach bar. No invasive supersized flat screens here – just the wide blue yonder, mountains and sea, and the perfect place to kick back and forget your troubles for an hour or two. It certainly ticks all our boxes: an ambiance so laid-back it’s horizontal, a backdrop of tropical paradise proportions, craft beers to slake the thirst and beyond borders chow. What’s on the menu? It all started with pizzas and they are undoubtedly still the bestsellers. Over the years they have been perfected, honed and refined with the choice of toppings diverse and atypical. Choices from their 20long list include the quintessential Margherita (B.220) through prosciutto with mushrooms, seafood with crab, prawns and Mozzarella, but our favourite is the vegetarian with tomatoes, olives, garlic, onion, rocket, bell peppers and mushrooms, but with our “Food Lovers” hats on we ordered it with extra salami! Hawaiian is another top seller but they are all much in demand from 11 am until well after the setting sun. How to get there: Located on Na Jomtien Beach just past the Kilometer 154 marker and Wat Na Jomtien. Heading south from Jomtien on Sukhumvit Highway make a U-turn after the Shell station on your right. Soi 8 is marked for the Pinnacle Hotel. Follow the road to the bottom and turn right. 500 metres on the left-hand side you will see Drifter’s Beach Café. Tel: 087 743 2319. Open daily (except Mondays) from 11 am to 10 pm. Visit www. driftersbeachapartments.com for more information. Apartments are available for rent. A very Happy New Year to all our readers and keep your comments and recommendations rolling in and Good Eating!

Chinese cheese sauce 200 ml tomato sauce 50 grams Chinese cheese 25 ml garlic pickle juice 5 grams sugar 5 ml fish sauce 5 grams chili flakes Crispy morning glory 20 grams morning glory 25 grams all-purpose flour 10 ml cold water Garnish 15 grams parmesan cheese 1 tsp pink peppercorn 1-2 pcs white jelly fungus 2 pcs wonton sheet 1 tsp caviar 5 grams black peppercorn

METHOD Chinese cheese sauce Mix tomato sauce with Chinese cheese and blend. Add garlic pickle juice, sugar, fish sauce, chili flakes and simmer. Garnish Melt parmesan with pink pepper in the oven for 5-10 minutes. Blanch white jelly fungus in boiling water. Deep-fry the wonton sheets and crispy morning glory mixture. Boston lobster Marinate the Boston lobster with lemon peel, olive oil, salt and pepper. Grill the lobster for 5 minutes. Handcrafted chitarra Mix the flour and salt and shape into a volcano on the work surface. Make a well in the middle, and pour in the egg yolks and oil. Using your fingertips in a circular motion, gradually stir in the flour until you have a dough you can bring together in a ball. Knead for about 10 minutes until it is smooth. Wrap the dough in a damp cloth. Allow to rest for about an hour in a cool place. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is about 1 cm thick and will go through the widest setting of your pasta machine comfortably. Put it through each setting twice, then fold it back in on itself, and repeat the process, cutting it in half when it becomes too long to handle. Store the other half under a damp cloth until you're ready to continue working on it.

When the pasta has a good sheen to it, and is thin enough for your liking cut using a knife, or the cutter on your pasta machine. Curl into portion-sized nests and leave on a floured surface, under a damp cloth, while you repeat with the rest of the dough. Bring a large pan of well-salted water to the boil, add the pasta and cook for a couple of minutes or until al dente, stirring occasionally to keep it moving. Drain. Assembly Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat, add garlic and chili and cook until garlic starts to colour (about 1 minute). Sear the scallops for 1 1/2 minutes on each side then set aside. Add squid and cook until opaque (about 2 minutes). Add morning glory and cook until warmed through (about 2 minutes). Add chitarra pasta and toss to combine. Serve on top of Chinese cheese sauce with Boston lobster and scallops to the side. Top with caviar and black pepper. Garnish with melted parmesan, white jelly fungus, deep-fried wonton sheet and crispy morning glory.

Muay Thai Kicks by Rory Coughlan

Muay Thai kick techniques are one of the most important techniques in the art due to their effectiveness and power. The official word for kicks in Thai is “Tae”. There are many variations of kick techniques depending on the application in each part of Thailand. 1. Tae Tad (Side Kick or Round Kick) Tae Tad are commonly used in Muay Thai as they are very easy to control and maintaining balance after the kick to defend the opponent's return strike. Tae Tad is executed by swinging the leg to attack the target; your hip should also turn in the same direction of the swing. Pivoting on the foot of the support leg. The kicking leg should be straightened. One should move forward to kick with the guard up securely and across the chin. Do not drop the guard you might suffer from the counterpunch. Whilst the other arm, straight out mirroring the kicking leg. 2. Tae Chiang (Diagonal Kick) The main target of the diagonal kick is to strike the lower ribcage. The leg should swing diagonally upwards to strike the target. To attain maximum efficiency, the kick should make an angle of 45 degrees against the floor. You should kick by letting the shin hit the target. Incline the body in the direction to that of the kick. Repeating the same guard with the arms. Pivoting on the foot of the supporting leg. Turn the hip. 3. Tae Kod (Hook Kick or Down Round Kick) Hook kicks are also commonly used due to its full of power. When you kick, your hip and body will fully rotate in the same direction of the swing, this increases the power of the kick. The hook kick can be used to attack the opponent when he is ducking down or in the lower position. A major disadvantage of the hook kick is if you miss the target, you may totally lose balance and give a chance to the opponent to strike back. 4. Tae Pub Nok (Kick to the outside of the knee joint) Tae Pub Nok is the kick that kicks to the outside of the knee joints. The boxer must sway his body a little away

from the opponent then move right up to the opponent with this kick as a greeting. Repeat the pivot of the foot and guard. Turn the hip. 5. Tae Pub Nai (Kick to the inside of the knee joint) Tae Pub Nai is the kick that kicks to the inside of the knee joints by stepping closer to the opponent by swinging the kick to the inside upwards. When the foot hits the target the opponent's leg will be moved sideways, thus making them lose balance. Foot pivot and guard the same. Turn the hip.

Three Tips for Beautiful Skin Blueberries, dark chocolate and sunscreen are three things you need to keep skin beautiful, supple and smooth. Antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, dark chocolate, cantaloupe, citrus fruits and leafy greens provide the nutrition you need for skin’s elasticity. Avoiding smoking prevents premature aging. But the number-one way to keep skin gorgeous is to stay out of the sun and away from tanning beds. The sun’s radiation causes skin damage, including wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer. Use a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays in an SPF of 15 or higher, and reapply often.

Ayutthaya: The historical heart of Thailand by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org

With its shapely chedis and picturesque pagodas, the ancient city of Ayutthaya has always been a big draw for tourists seeking a taste of the Orient. But Ayutthaya offers more than scenic views and a rich history. To the Thai people, the city is the spiritual heart of their nation and home to the Kingdom’s greatest treasures. The sumptuous styles of art and architecture, which were nurtured in Ayutthaya, can be seen in the temples, murals and buildings all over Thailand while the city’s cultural influence and traditions of diplomacy live on to this day. So by spending time in Ayutthaya, visitors can make a real connection with the past and enjoy a better understanding of Thainess. Capital of the Ayutthaya Empire, the city was founded in 1350, and was the second major capital of Siam (after Sukhothai). During its most glorious period, from the 14th to the 18th centuries, it was considered one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the world with glinting gilded temples and bustling waterways. The city was a centre of diplomacy and commerce and attracted traders from both Asia and Europe seeking luxury goods and Thai rice, which is valued worldwide for its fragrant quality even today. Ayutthaya flourished thanks to its strategic position on an island surrounded by three rivers that connected it to the Gulf of Thailand. This made it accessible to peoples such as the Portuguese, who first travelled to the city in the 1500s as members of the first official embassy from state-builder Afonso de Albuquerque, to King Ramathibodi II. Within five years, the two nations had a trade treaty in place. Later, other nations such as the Dutch were given permission to trade with Ayutthaya and Siamese ambassadors were sent as far afield as France, Japan, China and the Mughal city of Delhi. To this day, Ayutthaya remains one of the first places beyond Bangkok visited by tourists seeking a taste of Thai culture. As it’s just a short distance from Bangkok, it’s the perfect venue for a day of sightseeing and people often spend a few hours looking around the many temples and monuments before enjoying some of the famous local food and heading back to Bangkok. But Ayutthaya isn’t just important to Thailand and her people; it is regarded as a vital piece of world culture, too. This is why, in 1991, it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, if you want to see some of this heritage for yourself, here are some of the most famous sights:

The elegantly caved Buddha head at Wat Maha That

Wat Yai Chai Mongkon One of the most popular and best preserved of Ayutthaya’s temples is Wat Yai Chai Mongkon in the southeast of the historical city. You can climb the steep steps to the base of the temple’s 62-metre chedi for outstanding views over the city. There are rows of famous Buddha images in the Sukhothai style at the foot of the chedi, which was built around 1357 by King U-Thong. Wat Yai Chai Mongkon is an important site in Thai Buddhism as this was the monastery of monks who had travelled to Ceylon to study, and the head of this sect was made the Supreme Patriarch. Don’t forget to explore the temple grounds, as there’s a lovely reclining Buddha image here.

statue shows him astride a horse riding on a decorated base showing achievements from his life, including an impressive image of the king wrestling a crocodile. The monument is next to Chedi Phukhao Thong, an impressive 50-metre structure you can climb to enjoy the views. It was built by the Burmese to mark their victory in 1569. If you are wondering why the monument, indeed much of Ayutthaya is decorated with so many model roosters, it’s because they represent a legend in which Naresuan, when held captive in Burma, bet his freedom with a Burmese Prince on a cockfight. Thai visitors leave the model roosters as offerings at temples all over Ayutthaya.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram This is one of the best known temples in the Ayutthaya Historical Park and was one of the Royal temples where Ayutthaya’s kings carried out ceremonies. Large and imposing, the temple is in the Khmer style and the central prang is 35 metres high and represents the mythical Mount Meru. If you look carefully in the corner galleries, there are still traces of the original carved ceiling pieces.

Wat Phra Sri Sanphet Perhaps the biggest and grandest of Ayutthaya’s temples, and certainly the most important in antiquity is Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, which used to be within the grounds of the Royal Palace and so was only used by members of the Royal Family. It suffered a great deal of damage after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, but its beauty was so legendary that it served as the model for the glorious Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

King Naresuan the Great Memorial King Naresuan the Great (1555 –1605) was one of Thailand’s best loved monarchs, as he helped to free Ayutthaya from the Burmese, who held it as a vassal state. The huge reverence in which he is held can be seen from the monument dedicated to him at Ayutthaya. A

Wat Maha That Of course, many tourists come to Ayutthaya with one aim, to get a photo of what has become the city’s most famous Buddha image, thanks to its appearance on a million travel blogs and posters. This is the elegantly caved Buddha head, which has become a living part of

The reclining Buddha image at Wat Yai Chai Mongkon

the landscape, thanks to the roots and branches of a Bhodi tree that have embraced it. But it’s well worth taking a longer look around Wat Maha That, as it is one of the city’s most important temples and the oldest, being started around 1374. Look carefully and you’ll find the remains of centuries-old murals. But all the temples have something worth stopping by for. One of the best restored of Ayutthaya’s temples is Wat Thammikarat, which has lovely sculptures of ancient lions and naga’s as well as a reconstruction of the huge Buddha head that was found there. And if you appreciate oversized statues, you also need to visit Wat Phanan Choeng, which predates even the founding of the city itself. The temple houses a huge seated Buddha, said to date from 1334, though it has been restored several times. It is nearly 20 metres tall and known as Luangpho Tho. It is seen as important to sailors and

was visited by the famous Chinese Admiral, Zheng He in 1407 on one of his voyages of exploration. There are so many temples and ruins of ancient sculptures all over Ayutthaya that it would take several days to see them all. But you can avoid being templed-out by taking breaks and enjoying some of the other treats on offer. There are always friendly vendors around selling hearty bowls of noodles, cool drinks or refreshing fruit, while riverside restaurants offer tempting spots to have lunch. But however you choose to see this ancient city, you’ll come away with a better understanding of what makes the Thai people so proud of their heritage. Getting there • By Train: The cheapest way of getting to Ayutthaya is by train from Bangkok’s Hualamphong Railway Station. There are regular trains and the trip takes about two hours. • By Minibus: Mini buses leave for Ayutthaya from Bangkok’s Victory Monument area every half hour or so. The operators are based around the Century Plaza cinema complex. • By Car: Take Highway No 1 (Phahon Yothin) and go via Pratu Nam Phra In. This takes you to Highway No 32, then, turn left on to Highway No 309 to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Getting about Going on foot is not really practical unless you really only want to see the central temples. But many places rent out bicycles and as the landscape is relatively flat, it’s not hard to cycle around. Remember to put on sunscreen and a hat there. Another option is to rent a tuk-tuk or minivan for a few hours, as some of the temples are further afield and a bit far to reach by bike.

Magna Carta completes the one-stop shop From their base on Pattaya's South Road, Magna Carta law offices have long dominated the skyline in that part of town. The title (The Great Charter) was shrewdly chosen and recalled the year 1215 when England's King John was forced in a baronial revolt to accept constitutional changes which some see as the bedrock of the British judicial system. Historians are welcome to dispute that generalization as John soon reneged on his reluctant promises, but the real point is that a revolutionary document actually received the royal seal over 800 years ago.

Land prices are still on the move! This particular subject of the Eastern Seaboard’s land prices goes all the way back to April 2006 when I wrote: Pattaya’s land prices are no longer ‘Dirt Cheap’! That was more than 10 years ago, after land prices had already gone up considerably in preceding years. Ma n y l o c a l a n d f o re i g n speculators at that time were banking on land prices becoming even more expensive—with land prices poised to continue rising during 2007 as well. Little did they know that the world economic crisis was just around the corner; one would have thought that was the end of Thailand’s ‘Dream Run’ on escalating land prices. But did we see land prices go down? No! Did we see land prices level out? No! In fact, land prices haven’t missed a beat for almost 15 years and all indications are that prices will continue going up! We h a v e s e e n h o u s i n g development go up and down and go east and now south. We have seen the condo market go from large luxury sizes to very small units and from blazing hot sales to oversupply. We have seen the hospitality sector first going through a phase of serviced apartments and then into a full-blown hotel and resort boom. We have seen buyers plunking down the British pound (from 2003 to 2008), and then it was the Thai baht, and the Russian ruble, and now we are seeing cash-ready mainland Chinese with lots of yuan to invest in residential properties and hotels/resorts. This great rise in foreign investment and vacant land pricing over the past 15 years has occurred in spite of civil disturbances, red shirts/ yellow shirts, SARS, terrorists in the south, massive flooding, military coup and even the tsunami! In fact, not even our recent new-construction condo dilemma has had any affect on the area’s land prices; they just keep going up! These major events have given way to an even more powerful influence: the strategic planning and financial support being made by the Thai government within the PattayaEastern Seaboard area’s industrial and tourism sector, which is teeming

with signs of progress. The modern Suvarnabhumi Airport--10 times the size of Don Muang airport--is only an hour or so from Pattaya, and it is one of the larger airports in the world. Suvarnabhumi, having been open more than 10 years, is a fabulous addition to an already thriving tourist business, and it is certain to continue bringing in larger and larger numbers of tourists and increased interest in the PattayaEastern Seaboard area. Now we also have the new U-Tapao International airport south of Pattaya which has already experienced phase one of its expansion, allowing it to service an even greater number of international travelers. Three Polo Clubs, the Cartoon Network Entertainment park, a huge, 100-rai water park at Silverlake and a queue is forming of the most respected international hotels poised to move in to grace our beachfronts-not to mention two mega highrise hotel-condominium complex developments scheduled to be built in Na Jomtien--are just a few of the many dynamic local endeavors that ensure a sound future for the Eastern Seaboard. Does the presence of these world-class accommodations, entertainment venues and tourist destinations affect real estate and land prices in the area? Absolutely! So, whether you are a home buyer considering a small plot on which to build your dream home, or a serious developer looking to purchase a large beachfront parcel for a luxury condominium or housing project… you might strongly consider buying now! In fact, I can tell you that there are more land investment funds and purchasers surveying the Eastern Seaboard now than at any time in the last 25 or more years. W h y n ow ? T h e m a s s e s worldwide--including Thailand--do not have nearly as much disposable income as they had during past years, but don’t be naïve thinking that money has disappeared. It certainly has not. No, all that disposable income has been transferred into the hands of the financial elite; that is just as true here in Thailand as it is in the

rest of the world. Assuming you had received this abundance of new wealth (cash money) in today’s financial scenario, would you put your money in the bank? Absolutely not! Voila! Land is looking more and more attractive and the numbers of sales and potential buyers are incredible right now. Looking back just a few years in and around the greater Pattaya area will help you understand how land prices have arrived at this point… and just where they are heading. Today in the Jomtien Beach area, there are a couple 10 to 20 rai land parcels on Jomtien Beach Road priced for sale at 70 to 80 million baht a rai, with a couple small (less than a rai) parcels in the busiest part of north Jomtien Beach’s Soi 1 and 2 beachfront area selling at prices based upon a 100 million baht a rai. Back in 2011, a 19-rai parcel directly on Jomtien Beach Road sold for about 25 million baht per rai—more than double the original 2006 purchase price; we are already seeing much higher asking prices (tripled!) because, quite frankly, we are running out of beachfront land parcels! The owner of a spectacular central Jomtien Beachfront 23-rai parcel very recently would not budge from their minimum ‘best price’ 60 million baht per rai and, in fact, ended negotiations with rumors that their bottom-line price had gone up once again. Going south from Pattaya along the sea and in the interior such as Huay Yai and Na Jomtien is where so much development has begun. Several luxury housing developments featuring beachfront homes where prices in the past have fetched as high as 128 million baht (Baan Talay Thewa) for a luxury home on one rai of beachfront land. That’s more than US $3 million! As a result of developments like this, there is purchasing and building activity all the way down to the Bangsaray Beach area and up into the Bangsarey Hills. In fact, Bangsarey Beach will soon see completion of its very first luxury high-rise condominium. Land parcel prices have risen in the Na Jomtien-Bangsaray Beach

area and at a very good rate of increase as well, with very few beachfront land plots still available. Two Na Jomtien Beachfront land parcels, 66 and 60 rai each, from the beach to Sukhumvit Highway reached the market in the range of 35 to 37 million baht per rai just 15 months ago; they now are listed at 40 and 42 million baht per rai. Believe it or not, virtually all of the beachfront land in Na Jomtien and Bangsarey was listed at 7 to 8 million baht per rai less than 15 years ago and nobody was buying! It wasn’t until about 2003 that land prices in that area started their steady upward climb. These large beachfront parcels are definitely on the move and selling now, with a 59-rai beachfront to Sukhumvit Highway land parcel having sold next to Ambassador City, and a massive 149-rai land parcel with 80 meters on the Bangsarey beachfront to Sukhumvit having just sold within the past 24 months. Another outstanding area to watch very closely is just east of Bangsaray Beach, the Buraran Hills and on to Buddha Mountain and the Silver Lake Vineyards and Winery which are leading the way to unprecedented growth. the Bangsarey Hills area that were selling as low as 250,000 baht per rai around 1997 started their rise to about 350,000 baht in 2003, to 600,000 baht in 2004, and by April 2006 as high as 1 to 1.5 million baht, and in 2011 for about 2 to 2.5 million baht a rai--doubling or tripling every couple of years. Prices are even higher today; one-rai plots now sell in the Bangsarey Hills and Silverlake areas for around 3 to 6 million baht, depending on the number of rai in the parcel. Yes, land prices in Pattaya and surrounding areas have not stopped climbing for a single minute with the Na Jomtien, Bangsarey, Buraran Hills and Silverlake areas being the current great success stories on the Eastern Seaboard. They are definitely areas to keep an eye on before prices just go out of sight. In spite of everything from natural disasters to political upheavals, the Pattaya-Eastern Seaboard area is enjoying unprecedented increases in land prices, and everything points to continued robust interest from abroad, making foreign investment in vacant land extremely attractive. Yes, land prices are definitely ‘On the Move’ and Pattaya’s land prices are no longer ‘Dirt Cheap’! Now that’s an investment you can bet on!

Business Feature Continued from page 1/21

Magna Carta completes the one-stop shop co-working space with professional assistance for all aspects of running a business. The sixth floor is now an impressive conference room with a seating capacity for around 26 people. Incidentally, the lift was recently completed and is now fully operational. Magna Carta was founded on December 17, 2003 by Chalermwat Wimuktayon, known as Pico, who has a wide number of roles in addition to being the chief executive officer of the company. He is litigation adviser to the acting mayor of Pattaya City, chairman of the Pattaya Lawyers' Council, Region 2 committee councilor of the Lawyers Council of Thailand and a committee member of the Chonburi Immigration Bureau. The current Magna Carta team consists of 34 lawyers, 10 accountants and foreigners to oversee and assist the growing foreign clientele. The underlying principle behind all the changes at Magna Carta is to complete the long-established move to a one-stop-shop for a very wide public. This is particularly true of the financial consultancy service which adds even greater value to the legal and accounting framework. The creation of the construction and property management division, covering condominiums projects, aims to secure a completely safe environment and financial framework for all aspects of property purchase, management, leasing and selling. Another important aspect is the advent of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which officially began just over 12 months ago. This massive free trade zone across Southeast Asia has yet to find its full potential as some members, for example Laos and Cambodia, are not as highly developed economically as the other members. Thailand is well placed, because of its pivotal geographical position, to play a major role in the unfolding of the AEC. Magna Carta, with its network of legal contacts across the region as well as the expertise of its own company professionals, is in a first-class position to offer a one-stop-shop in the AEC context for both individual and corporate clients. Magna Carta has also established 313 Training Studio, located in Nongprue Soi 1, off Siam Country Club, which combines sauna, spa, fitness, health massage, martial arts and Muay Thai training facilities all in one place. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the facility is already proving to be very popular amongst the various catchment groups. In particular the Smile Sauna offers Finnish sauna and Turkish steam rooms as well as a covered swimming pool and

both hot and cold plunges. The White Lotus division offers fitness, martial arts and Muay Thai training

programs covering all levels from beginners to advanced. All these developments, which

are unique collectively on the Eastern Seaboard at the present time, mean that Magna Carta is now a one-stop-shop in the true sense of the word. The company caters for

everyone seeking a professional and conscientious input across a wide range of disciplines. Magna Carta may have a medieval name but it means the future of Pattaya.

Legal Advice L E G A L A DV I C E House Registration Book

by Magna Carta Law Office

What is a House Registration Book? House Registration Book or Tabien Bahn is an official document issued by the Local Municipality or District Office to Thai nationals as well as foreigners owning a residential property in Thailand, as a proof of a person’s permanent legal address and voting district. There are two types of Tabien Bahn: r Blue (Thor.Ror.14) issued to Thai nationals r Yellow (Thor.Ror.13) issued to foreigners who meet specific criteria Does Tabien Bahn confirm who owns the property? The Tabien Bahn may or may not bear the name of the real owner of the house. This document only shows the house number and details of all the people living in a specific property

Can a Tabien Bahn be used as mortgage collateral? No, only title deeds can be used as mortgage collateral. Tabien Bahn can simply be used as a proof of address of the person in official registration procedures. What if a person owns more than one property in Thailand? Although a person can own more than one house or condo unit in Thailand, each with a different Tabien Bahn, he or she can have only one principal residence, the Tabien Bahn for which is the only one in which he or she is allowed to have his or her name registered. Can a Tabien Bahn be issued without the house owner’s name on it? Yes, a Tabien Bahn can be issued without the house owner’s name on it.

Will I be bound to fulfill any legal obligations if my name is registered in a Tabien Bahn? If registered in the Tabien Bahn as the owner, you have to fulfill the following legal obligations: Birth Notifications – when there is a birth that took place in the house, either of the parents or you must inform the local registrar within 15 days. Death Notifications – when somebody dies in the house, you must inform the district office or the police within 24 hours. Moving Notification – when someone moves in or out of the house, you must inform the district office within 15 days. House Number Application – when you plan to demolish an existing house, you must inform the district office and apply for a demolition permit. A construction permit must also be applied for before you can build a new structure. You then must request a new house number from the district office within 15 days after the construction has been completed. Can a minor be registered in a Tabien Bahn? A minor can be registered in the Tabien Baan as long as a Thai parent or a Thai guardian is registered along with him or her.

and is not valid as a proof of real estate ownership. It only proves that the property has a registered address in Thailand. Ownership of property is verified by its title deed or Chanote. What is the difference between the House Registration Book for a condominium and that for a house? The House Registration Book for a condominium unit is the same as that for house and so is the application procedure. The only difference is that the type of housing is specified in the former as “Condominium”.

You have the right to change, register another person’s name into it or leave it blank. However, in the event that you need to sell the property and there is no name registered in the Tabien Bahn, you have to pay 3.3 percent business tax on the higher of the selling price and the assessed value unless the property is owned by a private person (not a company) for over five years, in which case you only need to pay 0.5 percent stamp duty and withholding tax, if any. Business tax will not have to be paid as well in cases where the owner’s name appears in the Tabien Bahn for over one year.

What if my Tabien Bahn is lost, can I reapply for a new one? Yes, you just need to apply to the district office and they will issue a new Tabien Bahn for a minimal fee. You can either go to police station to secure a police report for lost Tabien Bahn to be submitted to the district office or go directly to the district office. How do I move my name out from my current Tabien Bahn to register to a new Tabien Bahn? The easiest way to have your name transferred out of your current Tabien Bahn to a new Tabien Bahn is to have both done at the district office that has jurisdiction over the house or condo unit you are moving into. This can be done within a day because all the district offices have online connection.

Business News Mango Tree group launches new Thai-inspired dining concept in Hong Kong

Mango Tree Worldwide, in partnership with local restaurant operator 1957 & Co. (hospitality) Ltd., has launched its first, muchanticipated Mango Tree Café in Hong Kong inside Cityplaza in Taikoo Shing, one of the largest malls in the eastern part of Hong Kong Island. The smart Thai-styled café was designed by award-winning Hong Kong architect and interior designer, Steve Leung, who also designed all the existing Mango Tree outlets in Hong Kong and China. The Cityplaza outlet is on the third floor of the mall and offers a minimalist contemporary feel with Thai elements infused through a generous use of natural materials such as wood and bamboo, plus hand-painted walls featuring rainforest scenes. The 3,500 sq ft semi-open dining space offers seating for up to 140 diners with a welcoming ambiance and a warm, friendly service culture. “Following the success of our other Hong Kong restaurants, we are very excited to launch this dynamic new café concept in a new part of Hong Kong for Mango Tree,” said Trevor MacKenzie, managing director, Coca and Mango Tree

Group Worldwide. “Taikoo Shing is a vibrant neighborhood with a strong mix of commercial and residential venues. Mango Tree Café will cater mainly to office and business clientele during the week, but we’re also aiming for a strong local following at weekends, attracting a new generation of diners and their families.” Catering to the eclectic range of tastes and expectations in its vibrant city location, the menu at Mango Tree Café Cityplaza has been carefully researched and crafted to offer a wide choice of dishes. The restaurant’s Thai executive chef, Anunte Sae-ung, has more than 30 years of experience, including positions at the Shanghai-La Hotel in Bangkok and renowned restaurant Apichat Lad Phrao, located inside a converted airplane. Beyond Thai borders he has also introduced his inspired Thai cuisine to the kitchens of several 5-star hotels and upscale restaurants, including The Furama Hotel and Macau Jockey Club. At Mango Tree Café in Taikoo Shing, chef Anunte’s enticing options include everything from classic Thai favourites like Spicy Green Papaya Salad to a signature

Yellow Curry with Crab and River Prawn, as well as more creative indulgences such as Deep-Fried Tom Yum Chicken Wings, Baked Pork Chop Rice in Thai-style, and even a Pad Thai Pizza. The dessert selection is equally broad-reaching and includes Coco Jello, Choco Rocky Road, Mango Sticky Rice and Pandan Crème Brulée. “For Mango Tree Café we have created a product to match the varied tastes of customers who dine at shopping mall locations, particularly in Hong Kong and China. This approach fits well with our strategy to tier the Mango Tree brand and reach a much wider audience for our unique style of food,” added MacKenzie. In keeping with this inclusive philosophy, the dishes at Mango Tree Café Hong Kong are affordably priced, with lunch ranging from HK$80 – HK$120 per person and dinner from HK$150 – HK$200 per person. Extending the urban appeal even further, diners at the new outlet are automatically entitled to 3 hours free parking at Cityplaza Car Park, or 5 hours free parking at Sing Fai Terrace Car Park with electronic spending over HK$350.

Youth Focus Preparing cosmopolitan students for the knowledge age by Gregg Sangster It seems that Trilling and Hood's 2001 prediction of a knowledge age may well be becoming a reality. Worldwide, countries are developing and urbanising rapidly, and as this phenomenon accelerates and spreads, the true money and power resources within a country move from agriculture, to industry, to knowledge and business intellect. Multinational companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Nike and McDonalds to name but a few, regularly post record breaking revenue figures, and are constantly expanding into new markets. These companies need to understand the different markets they are entering into, and the different needs and cultural differences they may encounter, while retaining their fundamental money-making business models. Such companies, as they grow in size and number, require an ever greater need for knowledgeable, cosmopolitan employees to help them retain their market dominance and expand into the future. The so called "third culture kids" would seem to be the ideal candidates for such companies. Cosmopolitan students would need to not only be mindful of the issues affecting the world, and the many different cultures within it, but also feel at home in the world, wherever they may be. The significance of both cosmopolitanism in students, and their ability to adapt from a school environment to a business environment will be of growing importance

to the future of the world, primarily economically and ecologically going forwards. The importance of advancing technology and access to IT resources will need to be considered, as well as an ethos of advancing the country's economy through the curriculum. Incorporating Skype sessions, business studies and work experience placements into the curriculum would all be steps in the right direction to transforming the existing practices. A lot of traditional beliefs and deeply entrenched methods will have to be overcome, but the possible benefits to students and the country's economy are huge. In 1965 Singapore's education system was classed as similar to that of many poor African countries. Over the next 40 years, the government completely overhauled the education system, installing a rigorous curriculum focused on academic achievement and the values suggested in this

article. By 1995 Singapore's education system was ranked among the best in the world. On the 6th of December 2016, Singapore was ranked as having the highest achieving students in the world in the influential Pisa international education rankings and it was noted that other countries were not catching up; Singapore was getting further ahead. If students are going to be successful leaders of some of the world's largest multinational companies, they need to be educated thoroughly regarding different cultures and attitudes and be kept up to date with world issues such as conservation and climate change. Ensuring our students have a love for the world, for learning from different cultures and experiences, should also instil a moral obligation in them to be aware of the need to protect the world and those in it. Gregg Sangster is a teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Empowering young generation with technology

Delta Electronics (Thailand) Public Company Limited President, Hsieh Chen-yen, presided over the opening of Delta Industrial Automation (IA) Training Program. He welcomed 75 students from Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering. The event was held at Delta Electronics' headquarters at Bang Poo Industrial Estate in Samutprakarn. The training aims to enhance university students’ capabilities towards updated IA technology and to develop progress of engineering studies with more implementations as well as to inspire new innovation for sustainable life, society and economy.

Time Management Tips for Students

by Rachel Campbell 1) What do you have to do? The first stage of improving your time management is to list absolutely everything that you have to do. This may sound obvious, but speaking from experience, most students tend to leave important tasks until the last minute, which can impact the quality of their work and their overall grade. Include any university deadlines as well as any shifts you work on the list, and make a note of how much time each priority will take out of your schedule. 2) Create a life schedule Whether it’s a pin-up planner, a timetable or a calendar on your phone, find an organizing tool that works well for you and add your list of priorities to it. Also, think about when you are most alert, so that you can plan your study periods around these times. Find time for socializing, but also make sure that you get enough sleep. Most people need seven to eight hours sleep every night to remain focused and alert during study periods. 3) Be flexible but realistic Typically, allow around eight to 10 hours a day for working, studying, socializing and anything else practical you need to do. As a full-time student, you’re expected to dedicate 35 hours a week to university studies, including the time you spend in seminars and lectures. If you only spend 15 hours a week attending tutor-led learning, you should use the extra 20 hours for independent study. It’s also important to remember that things often take longer than expected. So, allow a little extra time in case you spend longer on a task than you thought you would. 4) Allow time for planning to avoid repetition Taking the time to research, plan and think about your work is crucial for good time management. Allow yourself the time to process new information and plan how you are going to use it, as this can help you to avoid having to re-read and repeat any research. One way of effectively planning before researching is to make a list of everything you

want to find out, so that you can make notes below each subheading as you go. 5) Avoid procrastination and distraction One way to avoid procrastination is to think about the different places you have been when studying – where were you the most focused? Where were you most distracted? Remember, what works for one person might not necessarily work for you. For some, studying with friends can limit their productivity. But for others, studying in groups can help to increase motivation and avoid procrastination. 6) Exercise to clear your head in between study sessions Believe it or not, exercise works in the same way sleep does. It can focus your state of mind, helping you to clear your head in between study sessions. If you’re new to exercise, aim to fit in a 10-minute run here and there, steadily increasing the amount you do as you go on. 7) Has your organization been effective? Constantly reviewing and reassessing your schedule can help you to recognize whether you need to make any changes in order to help you complete any university tasks and also have time to relax and spend time with friends and family.

This & That

There is no face of death until your own Each man creates his own hell

Masque of the Red Death, directed by Roger Corman in 1964, is likely the best of American International’s adaptations of the short tales of Edgar Allan Poe. The movie centers around an Italian prince of the high middle ages, Prince Prospero played superbly by Vincent Price, who invites fellow noblemen to his castle for fun and games whilst they ride out the deadly plague menacing the countryside.

The guests are subjected to Prospero’s cruel and demeaning entertainment, but matters get out of hand when a red-hooded character appears in the castle moving from room to room. Devil worshipper Prospero assumes this is his master Satan but, no, it is Death. The Grim Reaper has come to claim his own. In a macabre and memorable dance of death, all die including the astonished Prospero who had assumed he would escape the universal fate.

Some critics see the movie as an allegory about the inevitability of death. Maybe. But fans of Poe’s work and Gothic horror will be well pleased with this effort. The visuals are utterly fantastic, with the colour red ever present and dominant and the atmosphere nicely spooky and gloomy as befits a medieval castle in the middle of a health crisis. Unlike many movie adaptations of Poe, Masque of the Red Death keeps fairly closed to the original storyline and writers Charles Beaumont and R. Wright Campbell successfully adapted the source material into the screenplay. As far as the horror goes, it’s more obvious and realistic than in the other Poe adaptations by Corman: obsession and debauchery in the person of Vincent Price are the order of the day. This is certainly one of his nastier roles. But the movie isn’t just about the inevitability of death, no matter how you twist

and turn. Subplots include the abduction and attempted corruption of Francesca, an innocent peasant girl who is abducted by Prospero, the revenge of the dwarf jester Hop Toad upon the brutish noble (Patrick Magee) who abused his beloved mistress and the downfall of Prospero’s consort Juliana in one of Corman’s most effective dream sequences. The film’s most effective moment is when Prince Prospero finally realizes that the mysterious guest in red is not “His Excellency” Satan but the Red Death itself. The figure declares that “Each man creates his own God for himself ... his own heaven, his own hell.” Prospero attempts to flee but is always confronted by his red-cloaked self. “Why should you be afraid to die? Your soul has been dead for a long

time.” Heady stuff all that. The last scene of the movie is a grim procession with Poe’s final words from the story itself: “And darkness and decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” Masque of the Red Death was Roger Corman’s first film

made in England, produced there to avoid the tax laws. Although he got complete control over the movie, he cooperated well with the English crew and even granted them overtime to ensure the film was finished on time. Another point of use to the trivial pursuits fiend is that the Gothic metal band Theatre of Tragedy used quotes from the film in their 1996 song “And When He Falleth” featured on the album Velvet Darkness They Fear. In old age, Vincent Price confided that he had not particularly enjoyed making any horror film as the genre tended the typecast an actor. But he did reveal that he had enjoyed making Masque of the Red Death the most. And the one he liked least? That particular honour was reserved for Return of the Fly which has been buzzing around now for half a century and more.

Marriage Advice For Women: Little Things You Can Do To Make Your Marriage Hotter Now! After a few years of marriage it’s common for couples to just get used to each other and start to take each other for granted. When this happens we often wish for our younger days when everything was new and exciting, and our partner was the sexiest thing we had ever laid eyes on. The truth of the matter is that nothing has really changed, and you are both still the same people you were those many years ago. You just need to do some little things to spice up the relationship a bit… 1. Flirt Like you Have Just Met Remember when you first met and how any touch, no matter how light, could send shivers up your spine. Every little laugh was a delight to your ears, and sparks flew when your legs met underneath the table, or your hands brushed against each other as you both reached for the salt shaker. It’s easy to recapture those times with a little bit of imagination. Start flirting with your partner like you did in the ‘good ‘ol days’. Don’t start a conversation about your day at the office, or moan on and on about how the in-laws are visiting next weekend. Try something a little lighter and more amusing. Ask your partner about their dreams, such as if they could quit work right now what would they do tomorrow? Parties are a great venue to try out your new-found flirting skills. Grab a couple of drinks and escape from the crowd for a bit of alone time. Surprise your partner by pretending this is the first time you have met. They may be slightly confused for a minute or two, but it’s fun to watch as they catch on. Once this moment has passed, the theme has been set for the rest of the night, and you will soon realize there is still a lot each of you can learn about each other. 2. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone The familiar can soon become the mundane, so maybe it’s time to jump out of your comfort zone and try something that can really add the sizzle back into your relationship. You may already really enjoy your weekend morning routines, so you may be wondering why you would want to fix something that isn’t broken. The fact is we need a little shake-up every now and then to keep ourselves interested. A published study has shown that couples who occasionally enjoy any activity that is highly exciting but moderately pleasant have a higher satisfaction rating in their marriage, than couples who regularly participate in activities that are highly pleasant, but only moderately exciting. The moral of the story is that at least once a month couples should think outside the box and do something

slightly less normal. Activities you could engage in are things like going to a music concert that you normally wouldn’t consider attending, rock climbing, or even a bit of wild river rafting to get the adrenaline going. It doesn’t have to be as extravagant as all of those because even visiting an as yet unvisited part of town can be an exciting event. Who knows, it may even prove to be a bit of an aphrodisiac to your love life. 3. Surprise Your Spouse What’s surprising for many long lasting marriages is that couples can still find each other attractive even while wearing scruffy looking clothes probably only fit for around the house. That’s what’s so wonderful about being around each other for so long, the comfort level you achieve in each others’ company. Of course, there is a fine line between being comfortable and just letting it all go. If you regularly show up to dinner all sweaty and stinky from the gym, or end up in bed with hairy legs, then you are guilty of the previous comment. No drastic changes are required, so don’t go making any hasty decisions and throwing out all of your comfortable house and gym clothes. Just a few tweaks to your regular routine are all that is required, and occasionally wow your partner with a few nice outfits at dinner time. Wear some lacy underwear, and put on a backless dress. For blokes, make sure you shave and wear a classier shirt than what you would normally wear at your favorite restaurant. What you are trying to show here is that you’re partner is still worth putting in an effort for. Rest assured, the rewards for such a small effort will be more than worth it, if you get my meaning. 4. Get Yourself In The Mood Even If You Don’t Feel Like It The usual weekday routine is a mad rush that we are more than likely barely conscious of. Breakfast is often a slice of toast jammed into our mouth as we rush out the door, and we share only the barest of civilities as we pass each other on the way to the bathroom. Plonking down in front of the TV is the usual follow through to this routine at the end of the work day.

If we barely have time for even the barest of niceties how are we going to find time for sex? Are you kidding me? Who has time for that sort of carry on during the week? We need to make time for this act however, as foregoing sex is one of the biggest contributing factors to a modern relationship failing. There’s even scientific evidence to support it. During intercourse and orgasms, oxytocin (or the “love hormone”) is released into our systems. This is the hormone that makes a couple feel truly bonded during sex. What’s also great about sex is that it’s addictive. The more you have, the more you want. So how do you find the time for this vital relationship saving activity? It’s simple really, just wake up a little earlier than usual so you have a little bit of extra time in which to get funky. At the other end of the day you could forget about desert – or to put it another way, have a special kind of desert that doesn’t pack on the calories. If you don’t mind the calories you can also give it a try with the ice-cream as well. We’re not talking about quickies here, but neither are we talking about grueling endurance sessions. They’re more of a little practice routine to increase your libido, ready for the all night marathon sessions you’re bound to be getting into when you have the time. and

(Jan23-Feb22)  Aquarius You were warned to show

restraint during the new year festivities and it was your fault entirely that you threw up several times at parties. In future, you should bear in mind that merriment does not get out of hand if you are sensible. Precautions in your case should include refusing all alcohol and declining to eat anything apart from dry bread or plain rice. You need not worry about sex as you are too ugly to get any worthwhile offers. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Don’t be tempted to reduce your tensions by going on a shopping spree in the middle of the night as 24-hour convenience stores are way above your price range. Remember to keep your thoughts a secret at all times because your disgusting sexual desires will cause you to lose friends at an alarming rate. Cold showers are useless in your case until you determine to throw away your dirty books. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) It’s laughable to regard you as a ram in view of the fact you are a complete disaster on the intimate front. It really is high time you paused before you make a move, for example when playing chess. I am sorry to say the stars hold nothing pleasant for you in 2012 and don’t worry about the consequences of ending it all. Nobody will miss you apart from the person blackmailing you. Taurus (Apr23-May22) You are very accident prone and a car crash cannot be ruled out during late January. Don’t be afraid to speak up although this won’t do you any good during the interrogation at the police station. Love is highlighted for the weekend but do not overspend your budget. In other words, set a clear budget when dealing with prostitutes of either sex. Gemini (May23-Jun22) For the rest of this month keep things simple which will be easy for you as you can barely count to 10 without an abacus. Try to get together with people like yourself to have a good time which won’t be easy until the clubs empty around three in the morning. If you want to be the life and soul of the party try a funeral procession or a doctor’s waiting room. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) You have a very weird idea of progress. For example you think it’s an improvement if a cannibal in a primitive society learns how to use a knife and fork. Your skinflint nature will be the death of you, for example getting speedily off a baht bus at traffic lights and making a run for it without paying is bound to get you into serious trouble sooner or later.

by Madam Zyra

(Jul23-Aug22)  Leo the Lion roars tonight

Leo but, unfortunately for you, it will only be the start of an MGM movie on TV. The object of your sexual desire is close at hand but do be careful because anything you do, or try to do, will be recorded on your partner’s mobile phone. Follow through on your resolutions, such as washing under your arms and avoiding belching in the presence of your betters. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) No matter where you go, you will always be the same. Of course, it’s not easy being a cross-dresser when you are overweight and take Euro size 48 in shoes, but there is no point in fighting against the inner you. If you do decide to go for that breast implant operation, make sure you have enough money for both sides or one boob will not look like the other. This will lead to people laughing at you all the more. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Now is an excellent time to talk about future plans with your mate or partner. However, the storms clouds are gathering as Jupiter crosses Pollux in the heavens so do be careful about irrevocable decisions. For example, avoid joint bank accounts like the plague or you could end up eating at street kitchens for the rest of your time in Sin City. Your lucky number is 67319 which happens to be your wall safe combination. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) Spend more time with people who share your interests, although this won’t apply to you if your hobbies are solitary ones. You are due to face opposition in the not too distant future. Thus avoid anyone who wants to corner you or to take advantage of you, including men with a sock over their heads and carrying a knife in a dark street. Believe me, they do not have your best interests at heart. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) A sudden change at home will bring you some comfort. For example, the house may have burned down but at least your DVD collection was undamaged. Home improvements from now on in your new bungalow will pay a dividend. Thus if you buy another steel cabinet you will be able to store many more sheets of paper and a second vacuum cleaner could lead to a more hygienic residence. Capricorn (Dec 23-Jan22) Don’t let anyone bully you into doing something you don’t want to do. Follow your intuition and avoid any situation that feels perilous. If you are surrounded by a python in your bathroom then by all means call the emergency number at city hall but don’t check around with friends first or it may be too late. Some astrologists believe that Capricorns are very unintelligent but this could be just a rumour.

Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf from BJ's Bunker Boys Golf

by Derek Brook

Pleasant Valley (Stableford) Not a bad run from BJ’s brought us to Pleasant Valley nice and early, and a leisurely change allowed us to breathe deeply before trotting down to the start in what can only be called ‘Gale Conditions’. Indeed, so strong was the wind that it was difficult to stand on the tee, and many golfers stated that it was the strongest wind they had ever played in. With an eight-group field of players we looked forward to a windy time. After this, most of the time the ball seemed to go where it wanted to. It is not too bad playing with the wind behind or even into it, but in a cross wind it is really hard to keep the ball straight, and balls in the water or in a bunker were fairly common. Sadly in the water was a shot lost, and lost ball, but in a bunker could be anything as the dogs run free and the bunkers are seemingly not raked. So a ball in a bunker can be in a paw hole, buried as the sand is soft, or simply in a hole that had not been raked. Sad indeed. The course was windswept as a whole but not in bad

condition otherwise. This is a course that seems to be built on too little land and in the early days was not a good course to play, now however they have grown trees and although not enough to stop the wind still has helped make it a course that is playable and in fact at times a pleasure, especially when, as on this day, they had a special deal on green fee, caddy and cart. Windblown and tired we soon got back to the clubhouse to have a shower in cold water. Hot as we were it was actually not too bad, well so I tried to tell myself at the time. It certainly brings one back to life. Back at BJ’s it was soon time to get into the results. In the A flight, 0 to 22, the winner was John Davis with

40 points ahead of Tom Herrington with 37 points in second. In third was Tony Scamber 35 points and in fourth was Richard Kubicki with 34 points on countback over Landis Brooks. In the B flight the winner was Dave Cooper with 40 points ahead of a countback on 37 points that saw Karen Brown in second, Carol Kubicki in third and Torsten Bischoff in fourth. The front nine best score was Henry Wong and the back nine best score was Kenny Chung. Then as usual when the day is over we told the tall stories. T.T.F.N. Brian and Top Cat tops at Treasure Hill! by Derek Brook

Treasure Hill – St Ready. Set. Golf! So another year and numerous contests start. If 2017 is half as good for the PSC Tropical golfers, it will be a good year indeed! Can we possibly have more fun than the previous year? Why not? This first Friday of the New Year saw the Tropical’s at one of our favorite courses – Treasure Hill. Twentynine players made it a good turnout, and BJ's Lodge was crowded and noisy with people getting their fill. We like playing at Treasure Hill, because... what's not to like? The layout is interesting, a bit on the hard side but not overwhelming, usually in decent condition, and good value. Playing off the yellow tees made the day challenging but fair, and quite a few white tee markers were in the forward position anyway. Even the weather was nice. Wow, habitual complainers had a hard time coming up with a negative comment. Is there a harder par than that alligator hole? Scores are usually in the “average” range for the winners, and such was the case today, since with

Treasure Hill - Stableford (yellow tees) A smaller than expected group of 17 players assembled at the M Club for the trip to Treasure Hill, a venue which is becoming almost a weekly event on the Bunker Boys calendar due to the quality of the course and the good deal on green fees. Today green fees were slightly higher due to it being a Thai holiday, but the upside was a much less crowded course and faster play. There was the usual delay on the second tee but that was the only delay. Rumor has it that Raleigh Gosney lost his favorite ball on the second due to

Brett had piped him at the post with a fine 40 points which included a exceptional par on the final hole where his approach from a downhill lie of over 200 yards found the back of the green, then the downhill putt ended up eight feet past the hole, but Mike was on form and nailed the return putt for the win. Back at the M club a roast pork dinner with apple or blueberry pie was served to the hungry horde. Results: 1st - Mike Brett (18) 40 points 2nd - Frank Quinlan (35) 39 points 3rd - Ken Elmore (23) 38 points Near pins: Keith Norman, Geoff Parker, Donny Walding, Neil Carter

Colin Greig two wins this week the amount of time he spent looking for it, only to be hurried along by his playing partners who convinced him to declare it lost and take a drop. Shot of the round went to Les Humphries who, having lost a drive into the rough, teed up a second time only to drive his next ball directly into a large drainage pipe. His caddie (being a little on the pumpui side) could not be convinced to attempt a retrieval effort. Near pins were shared with some names appearing with great regularity. Colin Greig continued his recent run of good form with a very respectable 40 points, five ahead of Ken (hole in one) Elmore and Stuart Tinkler a shot further back

Khao Kheow - Medal (white tees) Twentytwo golfers made their way to the beautiful Khao Kheow course, a favorite of many where the course is always in great shape, good play is rewarded and poor play is punished more severely than most other courses. Play commenced on time and proceeded at a steady pace throughout the front nine, however in the transition to the back nine a small window opened up and a Thai-five ball was put out in front of our lead group of three with the expected result of slow play. Whilst most people would recognise the need for courses to maximise revenue, course marshals need to be more mindful of the negative effect this has on

The course was in good condition and mention must be made of the attention to the bunkers which have had new sand, been trimmed and were generally up to the standard expected for a quality venue. Ken Elmore finished in the placings for the second time this week with a score two better than his handicap and can expect to lose a shot or two next week. Frank Quinlan thought he had finally won for the first time in a year only to find out that Mike

Flight Winners Brian Parish (L) and Tom Cotton (R) 29 golfers, only a couple hit handicap. Results: A-Flight (0-22): Brian Parish (c/h 14) kept his cool and made handicap with a winning 36 points. Way to hit them straight! Steady John Davis (13) finished just behind with 35 points, and then ‘16’s Golfer of the Year Landis Brooks (9) came in with a respectable 33. B-Flight (23+): Mr. Tom “Top Cat” Cotton (29) had a

fine round earning a high score tying 36 points. Good going, Tom! Dave Cooper (26) is on a streak and continued it with 35 points, and then John Anderson (31) finished with 33, making the two flight winners with identical scores. Club champion Robbie Watts blitzed the field until the last few holes only to crash and burn, nevertheless finishing with a very respectable net 73, just two strokes behind the A flight winner Colin Greig on 71 who won for the second time this week. The B flight was a different story with Trevor Priestly registering his first win, bettering his handicap by a remarkable six shots, three ahead of Andy Brady and a street ahead of third placed Les Hall on net 81. The diminutive Peter Allen made a long awaited reappearance at the M Club, alas without clubs, so we await his overdue return to the course. Local Sports Pattaya Matchplay upcoming

Excellence for Eldridge! by Steve Ellison

Pattaya City is one of the fastest growing cities in Southeast Asia and has a long-standing tradition of being the hotbed of golf in the region. For nearly 30 years travelling golfers have visited and migrated as expats to Pattaya City primarily to enjoy the 25 or so fabulous golf courses that host daily tournaments on behalf of an increasing number of golfers and golf societies. It has long been said about Pattaya City that as far as amateur golf circuits are concerned the standard of play and participation in tournaments is amongst the best in the world with golfers usually playing daily or at least three times per week. Pattaya Matchplay© is a cooperative of six premium golf societies that will come together in an inter-club golf match play tournament that will culminate in a finals round for a set of cup, plate and bowl trophies. With the aim of providing a tough match play challenge for the best golfers in each team there will also be a regular tournament hosted by the golf societies in parallel – everyone can golf on the day and join in at the presentation. The tournament will run between January 20 and February 3, 2017 and can be booked by contacting the golf societies directly – all golf societies are actively seeking players so get in touch:

Pattaya Matchplay© will be promoted through a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ pattayamatchplay) that will have announcements, regular updates and features on the tournament and teams in the lead up and then live scores, photo galleries and video from the matches and presentations during the tournament.

Brizzi kicks off the New Year in a tight finish!

Mountain Shadow An excellent number of 32 golfers headed out to Mountain Shadow which always proves to be quite challenging. The course was in pretty good condition, with the greens on the second nine a bit slower than the front nine. Greetings were handed out to Robert Allen, Tony Ryan, Brad Green, Denis Steele, Jim Groves, Peter Greaves, and the Burra himself Eugene Reid.

unlucky Steve Younger, who makes losing in countbacks a habit, came in second with Mashi Kaneta third. B grade was won by Tiziano Del Pastro with 34 points by two points from Colin Stielow who filled second spot by way of a countback from Stuart Mann, both having 32 points. C grade was won by Patrick Poussier who carded a fine 37 points, second went to Volker Buley with 35 points and Niall Sturt, by way of a countback, came in third with 33 points. Results: A Grade (0-17): 1st - Sal Brizzi (4) 35 points C/B 2nd - Steve Younger (12) 35 points C/B 3rd – Mashi Kaneta (15) 35 points C/B B Grade (18-27): 1st - Tiziano Del Pastro (25) 34 points 2nd - Colin Stielow (26) 32 points C/B 3rd - Stuart Mann (20) 32 points C/B C Grade (28-36): 1st - PatrickPoussier (28) 37 points 2nd - Volker Buley (31) 35 points 3rd - Niall Stuart (35) 33 points

Two of today’s winners, Patrick Poussier and Sal Brizzi. Farewells were handed out to Nolan Wise who is heading back to the mines in Western Australia for a well earnt rest, and Niall Stuart also heading back to work. Both being accompanied by their best pal, Jack Daniels. Three divisions were required and all the first three placings in A grade were a result of a countback. Can’t get much closer than that. Sal Brizzi was the fortunate one winning the countback after coming in with 35 points. The

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Our first golf outing for 2017 found us back at our home course of Rayong Green Valley. There is a lot of Earth moving going on these days as a grand new entrance gate is in the works as well as the addition of housing estates on the grounds. The rumour persists that RGV will close for six months for course renovation. This has not been confirmed yet so it is still wait and see. The new hole layout has been well received, but the big controversy is the 10th hole that is now a long par 4 (formerly the par-5, mountain on the right) with a handicap of 8. This is quite a topic of conversation as many feel the rating of a four would be more appropriate for this 420 yard par 4. Let’s hope the new scorecards have not gone to the printers yet! A good turnout saw us with three full van loads of anxious golfers ready to see this new layout. Five blokes shot to their handicap or better today and it was Mark Wood that took the Caddy Smile near pin. Fred Birch and Alan Rothwell are usually good performers and they shared fourth with a 36 on the cards. Glen Perkinson was one better for third at 37 and Rex Chillcot was sole second with a sweet 38. About five months back, we received a beautiful new near pin marker for our charity the Caddy Smile programme. It was donated by today’s winner, Graham Eldridge, so it seems what goes round comes round! Graham topped the field with a solid 39 and I am sure he is looking forward to a prosperous 2017 shooting like that. Results: 1st – Graham Eldridge (15) 39 points 2nd – Rex Chillcot (23) 38 points 3rd– Glen Perkinson (21) 37 points T – 4th Fred Birch (19) 36 points T – 4thAlan Rothwell (7) 36 points

All hail Eldridge! It was another perfect day of golf in the Kingdom as we were treated to one of our favourite courses in the region. Conditions were just right for both the weather and the fairways so there were no excuses out there today. You know it is a tough comp when 39 points only gets you third place! That was the story for our mate Chris Bailey which could have been a winner on another day. Bailey’s mate, Pierre Gymer, had the best shot on the par 3 for the near pin award. Escaping a Canadian winter D-For was off his chain to collect donations, the Swan’s players and punters are a very generous bunch and keep giving to D-For. All are thanked for their continued contributions to assist the needy children of Pattaya. For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage

again, Blake Hanna turned in an amazing 41 point round, alas still not quite there mate! This is a tough crowd! The man with a plan strikes again, and Graham Eldridge takes his second win of the week to dominate golf here for 2017! Great shooting Graham, and a great way to start out the New Year! Now let’s get tucked into that Porterhouse from Raju! Results: 1st – Graham Eldridge (15) 42 points 2nd – Blake Hanna (18) 41 points 3rd – Chris Bailey (14) 39 points

Silky Oaks – Stableford – White Tees It was a bit of an adjustment in the schedule as we made today Silky Oaks and next Friday the 13th for Parichat Links. This course keeps getting better and more popular the more we play here.

Blake Hanna, Graham Eldridge and Chris Bailey après-golf at TGC Peter Thomas gets his first mention of the year as Pete bested the rest for closest to the pin today. TGC regular Gary Emmett shot to his handicap and his 36 got him a few handsome man vouchers from Capt. Phil. It was really just a two-horse race out there today and a couple of rounds of 42 blew away the rest of the field. Visitor David Johl could do no wrong and ended tied with our mate Freddy Graham at the top of the heap. Great round, Freddy, nice to see your name up there again! Warm wishes for the New Year for you and your families from myself, John McHugh and Adam Schoenfeld, and may you have a healthy and productive year ahead. Keep it in the fairway boys! You & Your Pets

Road Trip with the Furry Kids

With comfortable temperatures throughout Thailand, this is a perfect time of year for a family road trip to Chiang Mai, the Golden Triangle, Isaan or the Kingdom’s southern provinces. But would it really feel like family if you didn’t take your four-legged family members along to enjoy the experience? Certainly not! Before opening the car door for Fido or Sasha to jump in, here are some tips on preparing for a safe and smooth journey beyond Pattaya. Begin by getting a secure, wellventilated pet carrier, one large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. And before hitting the road, allow your pet some time in the carrier to get used to it. If your dog or cat hasn’t accompanied you on jaunts around town, now would be a good time to take him on short drives so he gets accustomed to the experience. Also in advance of travel, put together a pet travel kit. Include food, bowls, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, as well as a favorite toy or pillow. And make sure you have a collar with an ID tag imprinted with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number, and any other relevant contact information. Your pet must wear the ID collar at all times. On the day of your departure,

feed him a light meal about three or four hours before you leave, and never feed him while your vehicle is moving. Speaking of “never,” that applies even more so to leaving your animal alone in a parked vehicle. Despite cooler seasonal temperatures, the inside of a parked car nevertheless can become extremely hot, even to the extent of your pet suffering heatstroke. (Of course, that goes doubly during the hot season in Pattaya.) On the road, do not allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window. This can subject him to inner ear damage and lung infections, and he could be injured or blinded by flying objects (bugs, dust, debris). Finally, take along some bottled water from home. Drinking water from an area he's not used to could result in tummy upset for your pet and a spoiled holiday for you and the rest of your family.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

For obvious reasons this lovely family of three special cats must go to a new home together. They are indoor cats here so it would be great for someone who lives in an apartment. They are very friendly but will need a while to get used to a new home and family.

This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago, she was sick when she was small and so missed the opportunity to be chosen. Her mum "Zero" is here as well, they would make a perfect pair for someone.

Zero

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well-being.

Zero is an old timer and spends most of her time chilling out in the garden in some shady spot or other. She loves her food and will run at a great pace as soon as she hears a tin of tuna being opened !

Bella and Jacko

This lovely pair, Bella and Jacko, have been with us for a while now. Both are friendly and although they are not brother and sister they are soul mates and we thought it would be nice to re-home them together if possible.

Does your dog or cat enjoy chips, pretzels, nuts or other salty treats? They are all No-Nos. Large amounts of salt can

produce excessive thirst urination—or even sodium poisoning—in pets. Signs that pet may have eaten too many

and ion your salty

foods include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures and even death. Keep those salty treats to yourself!

Cat Corner Tip

Going to the Dogs... Dachshunds are ideal dogs for small children, as they are already stretched and pulled to such a length that the child cannot do much harm one way or the other.

~Robert Benchley

Butterflies taste with their feet. In civil wars of the past, when troops returned home with no casualties, a public notice was posted reading “O Killed.” From that came the expression “O.K.,” meaning all’s well.

If you are starting the year with a new cat or kitten, make it a priority to keep your furry friend happy and healthy. Toward that end, it’s important to maintain a set schedule and routine. Research has shown that changes in feeding times, location of food, even rearranged furniture can result in illness behaviors. For example, your cat may stop eating or stop using the litter box. In essence, cats don’t like changes or surprises.
