TOURISM SURGE EXPECTED A

uthorities in Thailand are gearing up for an expected 34 million foreign tourists in 2017. Particular attention is being paid to the country’s airports where an expected 150 million domestic passengers are anticipated on top of the foreign arrivals. All of the country’s international airports are experiencing refurbishment or expansion at the present time, whilst pressure is growing to upgrade the purely domestic ones, including Roi-et, Nakhon Ratchasima and Hua Hin. As regards U-tapao international airport, the nearest air terminal to Pattaya, 800 million baht has already been spent to build a new passenger terminal in order to cater for increasing tourism on the Eastern Eaboard. U-tapao currently accommodates 4,000 passengers a day with a maximum capacity of 800,000 travellers per year. A further 400 million baht is

scheduled to be spent in the current year and the budget includes improvements to the aviation communications system, the runway and the taxiway. Once all improvements have been carried out, the airport should be able to serve up to 3 million passengers a year and increase capacity to allow 60,000 flights in a

12-months period. U-tapao also serves as a repair hub for Thai International as well as being used by the United States air force for weather reconnaissance and allied research. The original airport was built by the United States in the 1960s and was used for bombing runs to Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam war which finally

ended in 1975 with the fall to communist insurgents of the capital cities in Indo China. There has also been much speculation about a new fast-track rail system to link U-tapao with Pattaya and Bangkok, although specific funding and actual timetables have not been Continued on page 4

News Tourism surge expected 100-day mourning ceremony for King Continued from page 1 provided. Much of the detail has yet to be worked out, in particular whether the existing track will be expanded or whether a totally new route is to be introduced. Some critics say that a link between U-tapao and Pattaya is of marginal significance unless Pattaya railway station is moved from its current location near Pattaya Country Club Road, very far from the city centre and the beach areas. But other commentators say this point is non-consequential as most of the rail business would be freight rather than people. Meanwhile, the government has announced that funding has been arranged to ensure that Suvarnabhumi airport can increase its annual passenger capacity from the current 45 million to 60 million by 2019. At Phuket international airport, capacity has been increased from 6 to 12 million persons a year after the completion of a new terminal. At Hua Hin domestic airport, there are plans to link with neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia as well as with other provinces in Thailand. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha claims that there is a 20-year development plan which includes airport expansion and logistics which have been pinpointed to link Thailand with the rest of Southeast Asia.

The government also supports the idea of rolling out the welcome mat for big spenders, especially from other Asian countries such as China, Japan and South Korea. Over time, there is expected to be less emphasis on budget travellers and tours and more specific marketing aimed at wealthy individuals and concentrating on five-star hotels, yachting, high-end medical services, private jets and sports. In recent months, the army and the police have been cracking down on illegal businesses, nonregistered hotels, foreign tourist guides (without the required permit) and zero sum holidays (group tours fully paid for in the home country before the vacation begins). Visa policy is also under review as regards long-term expats. The government recently stated that a new 10-year retirement visa will be unveiled in 2017 in an attempt to encourage wealthier pensioners from overseas although the status of the current retirement visa is by no means clear. A new attempt is also being made to encourage membership of the Elite Card which can offer 20 years of residence in the Kingdom, and certain perks, in return for a 2 million baht one-off fee. There is also a “baby elite card which offers residence for five years in return for a one-off payment of 500,000 baht.

New generation of tourism professionals addresses the future of Thai hospitality industry IKEA recalls MYSINGSÖ

The annual Thailand Tourism Forum (TTF) brought together more than 500 hotel industry professionals at the InterContinental Hotel Bangkok to discuss the most important issues currently facing the country’s tourism sector. Despite significant global challenges, tourism in Thailand continues to show impressive resilience with annual arrival numbers set to exceed 30 million. Increased airlift and expanded infrastructure in Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai all serve as strong enablers for growth, while an ability to adapt to ever-evolving visitor needs and expectations continues to allow Thailand’s tourism markets to thrive, even in the face of a rapidly changing global travel market.

beach chair

Even with a positive big picture outlook, Thailand faces significant challenges and strong competition from other countries in Southeast Asia and hotels across the Kingdom are continually faced with the task of reaching respectable levels of ADR while also maintaining revenue per available room (RevPar). Meanwhile, tourism dependent businesses are forced to repeatedly re-invent themselves in order to stay

relevant, not only to visitors’ changing travel aspirations, but also to the expectations of visitors from an ever widening range of cultures and source markets. “New faces from new places demand new business models that will breathe life into the Thailand tourism industry. The ‘Chinafication’ of Thai tourism means that Chinese visitors have become the oxygen for growth and with a rise in independent, wealthy travellers it’s time for the industry to look beyond the tour groups and refine its approach to all the key Asian source markets,” said Bill Barnett, managing director of C9 Hotelworks. These new demands and market dynamics are assessed and analyzed by exper t presenters and debated in lively panel discussions at the Thailand Tourism Forum

IKEA urges customers who have bought a MYSINGSÖ beach chair before January 31, 2017 to bring it back to any IKEA store or pickup and order point for a full refund. After washing the fabric seat it is possible to re-assemble the chair incorrectly leading to risks of falls or finger entrapments. IKEA has received five incident reports in which MYSINGSÖ beach chair collapsed during use due to incorrect re-assembly. All five reports included injuries to fingers and required medical attention. The reported injuries happened in Finland, Germany, USA, Denmark and Australia. Safe products are a top priority at IKEA and all products comply with international and national legislation as well as relevant standards. MYSINGSÖ beach chair has gone through relevant mechanical, fabric and chemical tests 2017 during a full afternoon programme followed by a well attended networking event, supported by the InterContinental Hotel Bangkok. Underlining the importance of new generation thinking for hotels and hospitality businesses in Thailand, TTF this year welcomed Vorasit ‘Wan’ Issara, managing director of Sri panwa, a member company of Charn Issara Group. Mick & Di The Food Lovers

Skewered Caesar Salad

>> from L1

Dusit Thani Pattaya appoints a new chef Plus there’s a new, innovative menu at The Bay Restaurant With all these impressive qualifications and remarkable credentials, he is spear-heading his brigade into remodeling the menu into an exciting modern fusion of thrilling dishes to be served at the hotel’s sea-facing restaurant, The Bay. Positioned beside the Lagoon Pool, it is a stunning restaurant with a large terrace overlooking the bay of Pattaya and the perfect place to enjoy lunch with a view of the water and a sun-drenched beach or under a starstudded sky for a memorable dinner. Chef’s innovative concept for his new menu is skewered food.

The tradition of using skewers was recorded in the histories of many countries. Japan has a very long history of cooking and grilling meat over charcoal and Hawaii has a blend of many traditions emanating from the Pacific which entails roasting everything over the fire with skewers from meat to fish to fruit, especially pineapple. Mick and I were invited recently to meet Chef Pathma and to taste his signature dishes, which will be appearing on the new menu. First to hit the table was a double Wagyu beef pattie with all the trimmings

Skewered Beef Patties

(B. 350 ++). Nothing ordinary about this burger as it had been deconstructed and strung creatively on a tall skewer. Topped and tailed with a house-made bun, the skewer

was then dressed with a pattie, cucumber, pineapple, then another pattie followed by beetroot, a large hunk of cheese, tomato and finally back to the toasted bun. Served with French fries and a gravy, it was indeed an extraordinary sight. Next up was a skewered Caesar salad (B.250++). Fashioned from a crisp Cos lettuce with the requisite creamy dressing, ham, halved boiled eggs and tomatoes, it was another culinary whimsy. To complete our trio of dishes, a huge grilled squid was then served stuffed with herbs, grilled to perfection and served with lemon wedges and a really lovely spicy papaya salad. Other dishes that chef has up his sleeve to complete his novel menu are smoked salmon rosette skewers, topped with caviar and accompanied by quail eggs, cherry tomatoes and condiments, tandoori chicken skewered mini wraps with a tomato and onion salad and mango chutney

or giant king prawn with an Indian chick pea salad and spices. Mick and I had a wonderful dinner, we sat on the terrace, gazed out to sea and ate gourmet treats with the magic fusion twist of Chef Pathma. All this was enjoyed in the company of the general manager, Neoh Kean Boon, coincidentally also a Malaysian gentleman, Vanjie Lauzon, director of Communications and of course Chef Pathma who we enjoyed talking to between his forays back and forth to the kitchen. The setting of The Bay restaurant is stunning, the ambiance totally stress free, the food sumptuous and the choices lavish. It’s a true treat. The deVine Wine Club @ Royal Cliff Resort

Presents The Wines Of Wolf Blass

Pattaya’s foodiegentsia and oenophiles gathered recently in the opulence of the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar to enjoy the latest deVine Wine Club dinner. The host for the evening was the distinguished winemaker

Stuart Rusted from the well-known Australian wine house Wolf Blass. He had selected six excellent and varied wines to accompany the exquisite food of Executive Chef Walter Thenisch. Graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing

MIXOLOG

director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, these occasions are eagerly anticipated and enthusiastically attended At the reception area we enjoyed a glass or two of a Reisling Yellow Label Wolf Blass 2016 which paired well with the extensive selection of creative canapés. The ambiance was energized as we were all filled with high expectations for the 6-course pageant of tastes to come. Moving into the stylish interior of the Royal Grill Room, with its traditional rich teakwood décor and the soaring arched windows (plus the dulcet notes of the piano player), it just oozed with luxury and extravagance. A plate of seared yellow fin tuna loin launched the evening. This proved to be an excellent curtain raiser, the gourmet fish (known as the filet mignon of tuna) was lean and tasty. Accompanied by a delicious confit of fennel and meyer lemon on a puddle of arugula cream sauce, it was a delight. Paired with a Yellow Label Chardonnay with its medium bodied palate and soft creamy texture, it was a standout course. A pre-main course of braised wild boar ragout in red wine accompanied by a Yellow Label Pinor Noir with its vibrant, quaffable personality underlined with a subtle touch of French oak was top notch. We loved the subtleness of the creamy celery root mousseline refining the boldness of the wild boar. An innovative carrot and fresh ginger sorbet straddled the courses with its clean, bright but savoury qualities; I could have eaten a bowlful. It was now time for the main event, a roasted 65-day dry-aged Charolais beef rib eye escorted by a Shiraz 2015. This gourmet beef from the hilly region of Burgundy is famous for its quality and outstanding flavours. It was served

with a bone of intensely rich beef marrow accompanied by sautéed baby broccoli and a concentrated morrel sauce. Big, hearty flavours here which needed the deep berry and spice characters of this well structured wine to partner such a plate. A duet of cheese from down under now followed. A big mature, extra sharp cheddar called Old Croc which had been aged for 18+ months to impart its full, rich flavour was absolutely superb, especially served with two home-made jams (apple raison and cranberry) to counter balance the maturity and sharpness. This was partnered by a Tasmanian blue which started life as a creamy brie before delicate blue veins appeared to produce a soft buttery texture with fully developed flavour of a traditional blue cheese. Throw a Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 into this equation and we were in cheese and wine heaven. The wine, produced from South Australia’s finest Cabernet regions, had been expertly blended to create a wine rich in flavours of plum and blackberry but with subtle undertones. The last pour of the evening was a Pink Moscata Red Label Wolf Blass

NV to marry with a lemon tart with citron meringues and panna cotta pralines. The wine was deliciously sweet and bubbly with fruity aromas yet with an exotic musk, bright effervescent and full of life, it enhanced the lemon tart perfectly. These extraordinary wining and dining occasions at The Royal Cliff Resort offer the unique opportunity to taste vintage wines from around the world matched to a perfectly balanced menu. Gourmet food, exemplary service and attention to detail make for a very special and memorable gastro-occasion. Muay Thai Knee Muay Thai knee techniques are as important in Muay Thai as any other. Knee (khao) is one of the lethal weapons in Muay Thai. The effectiveness of the knee is equal to that of the elbow if the boxer can execute it properly with a good technique and timing. Perform the technique by raising the knee to attack; this may a bit harder for beginners as it requires proper balance maintaince when attacking. The main characteristic of the knee is you generally have to be at close-quarter with your opponent, but sometimes you can use the knee to attack the opponent while you are in long range such as flying knee kick. In most cases to use the knee you have to try to grab the opponent's neck, in order to "lock" and attack. However, when you clinch and knee, you may be attacked by the opponent's elbow strike The effective way to use Muay Thai knee techniques properly is by thrusting it straight upwards. The targets for the knees are the area around the body upwards towards the chin. The knee attack has to be straight, powerful, and sharp. The knee also should easily turn into a kick for pushing the opponent away in order to prevent the counter attack and double up the pain to the opponent. To increase the agility of Muay Thai knees the practictioner

by Rory Coughlan

should practice knee throwing frequently. Learn to mislead the opponent by the weapon and angle of attack before using the weapons. The proper Muay Thai knee techniques thrust must move straight not wavering towards other directions. The tip of the foot must be pointed to be ready to use a kick. Muay Thai Knee Techniques • Khao trong – Straight knee • Khao dode – Jumping knee • Khao nui – Small knee • Khao kratai – Rabbit knee • Khao la – Farewell knee • Khao lod – Lower knee • Khao loi – Flying knee • Khao chiang – Diagonal knee • Khao khong – Curving knee • Khao tat – Horizontal knee • Khao top – Knee slap • Khao yao – Knee bomb • Khao loi – Flying knee • Khao yiap – Step-up knee

Is it Time for the Big Mac Financial Meltdown?

Recently I read an interesting article that was published by Simon Black on his own website, www. SovereignMan.com Simon referred to the internationally acclaimed weekly newspaper The Economist which had published its first-ever “Big Mac Index” (BMI) over 30 years ago back in September 1986, which has been updated and republished every year since. The “Big Mac Index” (BMI) was originally written as an amusing and entertaining way for the publication to indicate or give a point of reference as to whether international currencies are valued properly by the prices of Big Mac hamburgers around the world and how they compare with one another. One would think that the price of a Big Mac should be the same from one country to another; whether it is purchased in Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv or Montreal, a Big Mac is a Big Mac. Right? Let’s face it, a Big Mac consists of two 1.6 oz (45.4 g) 100 per cent beef patties, "special sauce" (a variant of Thousand Island dressing), iceberg lettuce, American cheese, pickles, and onions, served in a three-part sesame seed bun. It’s exactly the same worldwide. Simon’s ar ticle was well equipped with pricing statistics and noted, for example, that a Big Mac currently sells for 49 pesos in Mexico, the equivalent of about US $2.23 or 78 baht. From Mexico Simon took us to Switzerland, where the popular

sandwich sells for 6.50 francs (US $6.35 or 222 baht). That meant that a Big Mac in Switzerland costs 2.8 times as much as the exact same burger in Mexico, and that begs the question: what’s the difference between a Big Mac in Switzerland and a Big Mac in Mexico that would allow for such a difference in price? The answer: absolutely nothing! But 2.8 times is clearly extreme (I would say exorbitant). It suggests that the Mexican peso is undervalued when compared to the Swiss franc. Last month The Economist published the most recent BMI; to almost no one’s surprise it revealed that when compared to almost every currency in the world the US dollar is currently far too strong. In fact, it is dangerously overvalued! For example, the average Big Mac price in the US is $5.06 (177 baht), according to The Economist—17 percent higher than in January 2013. That prompted a satirical comment from Simon, “not that there’s been any inflation in the United States!” In the Euro Zone, the average price of a Big Mac is 3.88 euros (about US $4.06 or 142 baht) and that indicates that the euro is 20 percent undervalued against the US dollar. Now here is where the BMI pricing parity really starts to come unhinged: in countries like Malaysia, South Africa, and Russia, Big Mac prices are so cheap that their local currencies against the

US dollar are more than 60 percent undervalued. The U.S. dollar being overvalued is not something to be excited about as if it is some kind of economic reward. I could not agree with Simon more when he says, “It’s not an indication that America is #1, the dollar is King, or that the US economy is strong.” I also agree 100 percent that this is clearly a bubble and one that is about to burst. Simon went on in his article to remind us about the 1990s and the infamous dot-com bubble. Remember the ridiculous stock prices of those hilarious websites like Webvan.com that raised $375 million (13.1 billion baht), with shares trading at around $30 (1,050 baht) and the company was valued at $1.2 billion (42 billion baht) at its peak. Then Webvan stock fell from $30 dollars (1,050 baht) a share to just 6 cents (2 baht) a share. This current US dollar bubble, according to most economic pundits, has been growing for more than two years and it is not looking good; in fact, it looks imminently close to crashing. We a re n ow l o o k i n g a t catastrophic differences between international currencies and the U.S. dollar that are extreme and precarious; they in no way make any sense as they are completely irrational when considering normal and healthy currency exchange rates. Don’t be fooled: it’s not just Big Macs, Whoppers and Quarter

Pounders that are overvalued; it’s virtually everything you purchase. The entire American economy is overvalued. Did you know that when measuring the US dollar’s value against the world’s currencies by using the “US Dollar Index” it shows the dollar currently at its highest level in more than 14 years? Can you imagine the pressure this puts on politicians and policymakers not to mention the mainstream media as they are all going half mad trying to hide and gloss over the obvious? Figures don’t lie, but politicians, policymakers and the mainstream media sure do, and the current economy in America is making them crazy trying to act like “All is well.” It was reported in the Wall Street Journal just a couple weeks ago that Donald Trump called the US dollar “too strong. And it’s killing us.” In less than 24 hours from the time Trump made this announcement the dollar index fell 1 percent. The overvalued dollar is “a drag on U.S. growth” was the latest comment from Fed Chair

He is an instructor with the Thailand Real Estate and Business School (TREBS) and heads the International Marketing Committee as vice president for the Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association of Thailand. Janet Yellen. While it may be near impossible to predict exactly when this deflation begins and the bubble bursts, we know that financial controllers will stretch this currency with more printed money to the very end. Even though America’s two most powerful policymakers want a weaker dollar, it doesn’t take an economic pundit to know what’s going to happen. So here’s the silver lining-perhaps your big opportunity if you are holding US dollars which are dangerously overvalued while many foreign currencies are greatly undervalued against the dollar. Simon Black’s closing sentiments were classic when he wrote, “The old saying in investing is Buy Low, Sell High and it also works the other way: Sell High, Buy Low.” So to end this commentary on a positive note: the opportunities right now are huge for those able to get rid of their overvalued US dollars which are at a 14-year high, and exchange them for undervalued foreign currencies and assets which, in many cases, are at their lowest on record.

Legal Advice L E G A L A DV I C E Dealing with Debts

Issue 02

1-15 february 2017

by Magna Carta Law Office

Debt is an amount of money borrowed by one party from another with an arrangement that gives the borrower permission to borrow money subject to contractual terms regarding the amount and timing of repayments of principal and interest. Debt should be taken with a clear intention of paying it back. Debtors are legally responsible for paying the debts they legitimately owe. If I do not pay off my debts, am I going to go to jail? You cannot be sent to jail, or even be arrested for owing a debt, regardless of the amount involved. However, you could face court action over unpaid debts. Can a creditor take legal action against a debtor without a written contract? A loan of money for a sum exceeding 2,000 baht in capital is not enforceable by action unless there is written evidence of the loan signed by the borrower. No repayment of a loan of money evidenced by writing may be proved unless there is written evidence signed by the lender, or the document evidencing the loan has been surrendered to the borrower or cancelled.

Can a creditor force entry into my property? A creditor has no right to forcibly enter your property to take control of your goods or to seize anything as a repayment of the debt. To collect an unsecured debt, the general rule is that most creditors must first file a lawsuit against the debtor and win the court judgment.

bankrupt, or his whereabouts in Thailand are unknown. If the guarantor can prove that the debtor has the means to perform and that execution would not be difficult, the creditor must first make execution against the property of the debtor.

Will I be responsible for my fiancée’s debts after we get married? If your fiancée is personally liable for a debt incurred before or during your marriage, it shall first be settled out of her personal assets; however, if her personal assets are not sufficient to settle the debt in full, it shall be satisfied out of her portion of your joint assets.

Will I be liable to pay for my dead parents’ debts? In most cases you are not liable for another person’s debt when they die, unless you are a guarantor or co-borrower on the account. If there are any assets left, they must be used to cover the debts left by the deceased before distributing anything to the heirs. Creditors may claim repayment of the loan against the guarantor only within one year after the death of the borrower.

What will happen if my relative has stopped paying for the loan that I signed as a guarantor? As soon as the debtor is in default, the creditor is entitled to demand settlement from the guarantor by sending a letter of notice to the guarantor within 60 days commencing from the date of default. A creditor cannot request a guarantor to settle the debts of the debtor unless the notice has been duly received. W h e n t h e c re d i t o r demands settlement of the debt from the guarantor, the guarantor may require that the debtor be first called upon to settle unless the debtor has been adjudged

What is the maximum interest rate a creditor can legally charge? Interest shall not exceed 15 percent per year; when a higher rate of interest is fixed by the contract, it shall be reduced to 15 percent per year. Interest shall not bear interest. The parties to a loan of money may, however, agree that the interest due for not less than one year shall be added to the capital, and that the whole shall bear interest. Any such agreement must be made in writing and signed by both parties. If it is agreed in a contract that interest is payable, but no rate is specified, the court will order, as prescribe the law that the parties agree to the rate of 7.5 percent per year.

Emirates to launch daily flights to Croatia Introducing the only first class cabin product between the Middle East and Zagreb Emirates announced that it will further expand its European network with the introduction of a daily flight from Dubai to Zagreb (ZAG), the capital of Croatia from June 1. The new southeast European destination will be served by an Emirates Boeing 777-300 aircraft, the only wide-body service operating to/from Zagreb. “Emirates has had a commercial presence in Croatia since 2003, so to launch full operations is a natural progression. Emirates is pleased to have this opportunity to add such a picturesque destination to our global route network. We look forward to working with our partners and stakeholders in Croatia to provide our world renowned service to our customers on our young, modern fleet of aircraft. We are also committed to our contribution to growing the trade and tourism flows between Croatia and Dubai, as well as encouraging incoming tourism from the Middle East and Asia Pacific, where Emirates operates 45 destinations,” said Thierry Antinori, Emirates’ executive vice president and chief commercial officer. The new Zagreb flight opens a whole new exciting region for Emirates’ passengers to explore. The city itself is steeped in culture and history, with an abundance of charming pavement cafes and restaurants to be enjoyed during the spring and summer months. Located in the northwest of the country, the capital city offers easy access to the mountains and national parks for energetic travellers to hike, or visitors can simply admire the natural beauty and capture the stunning vistas for Instagram or the holiday photo album. During the winter months, the ski resort of Sljeme on Medvednica mountain is just a 20 minute drive away and is a great alternative to the busy Alpine slopes. On Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, the picturesque resort of Split and the exclusive islands of Hvar and Brac can be found. Further around the coast, the UNESCO protected historical centre of Dubrovnik tempts visitors with its baroque cathedral and distinctive walled Old Town, which may have caught the eye of TV fans as ‘King’s Landing’ in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones.

The city’s stunning architecture has also been selected by Disney as a filming location for the latest in the Star Wars franchise, Episode VIII, out later in 2017. The country is a popular destination for business and leisure travel from around the world, in particular with tourists from Far Eastern destinations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore, plus Australia. The favourable flight times offered on Emirates’ new service will make travelling to Zagreb from these markets and many more, a more seamless and enjoyable experience. The new flights will not only benefit travellers in Croatia, but also those in neighbouring Slovenia and even the southern regions of Hungary and Austria making it more convenient to travel with Emirates to Dubai and beyond. Visiting the airline’s home of Dubai for leisure or business, in a choice of three different cabins, on a modern, wide-body aircraft, is now a viable option. Onward travel to Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, or Sydney, Melbourne, Maldives, Seychelles and Sri Lanka can all be reached with less than four hours’ transit time. From the perspective of trade and commerce, the whole southeast Europe region will now be more accessible to businesses in the Middle East and beyond, an area previously unreached by an Emirates route. Emirates’ daily 777 service will also offer up to 16 tonnes of cargo per flight, opening up access to more global markets for Croatian exports, and to support trade.

Reinforcing its favorite car brand image by winning fifth year in a row for Trusted Brand Award

Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. announced its 2016 sales performance and reinforced its no.1 position in Thailand’s passenger car market with the most accumulative sales from January to December 2016 at 107,342 units (including Honda BR-V, HR-V and CR-V). Honda’s market share rose to 32.7 percent from 31.5 percent in 2015. This success has made Honda the champion for passenger cars two years in a row (2015 and 2016). Total passenger car sales in Thailand in 2016 were 328,053 units which is 7.9 percent lower than the total sales in 2015 of 356,065 units. Overall automobile market sales (including commercial and passenger cars) in Thailand in 2016 were 768,788 units, a 3.9 percent decline from 2015 with sales in that year of 799,632 units. Pitak Pruittisarikorn, chief operating officer, Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said, “In 2016, Thailand’s automotive industry faced another challenging year due to slowdown in the domestic economy. However, Honda’s market share grew and we have been ranked no. 1 in the passenger car market for two years in a row. This represents another significant success for Honda and derives from customer trust and strong feedback about products that we launched last year such as Honda BR-V, Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Honda Accord Hybrid.” In 2017, Honda remains determined to introducing a strong lineup of innovative automobiles beginning with The New Honda City, a popular subcompact car with the highest sales in the subcompact segment. The new Honda City comes with a sportier and more luxurious exterior and interior, and

is also fully equipped with new comfort and safety features to fulfill the perfect life. Additionally, Honda will be launching many new models this year to serve all people’s lifestyles and stands ready to leverage our service to the next level to ensure the highest customer satisfaction. In addition to the success in sales, one of the greatest sources of pride for Honda is the “Outstanding Brand Image for a Trusted Brand” award from the Thailand Automotive Quality Awards (TAQA) for the fifth year in a row. "This truly reflects strong customer satisfaction with highestquality products, services and a range of corporate social responsibility programs. Honda will continue to create and deliver the best value for our customer and Thai society, reinforcing our commitment to being a company that society wants to exist.” Pitak added. The Honda Khiang Khang Thai Fund, under the Honda Thailand Foundation continues its mission to help Thai people who are affected by natural disasters by donating at the “Pracharat Ruamjai for helping southern flood victims” event a total value of 30 million baht which included 10 million baht and 700 units of high pressure washers worth 20 million baht for those who suffered from floods in 12 southern provinces. And in December 2016, the Fund donated 4,500 sets of survival bags and essential supplies including bottled drinking water, t-shirts, life vests and tents valued at a combined 3.5 million baht for flood victims in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Phatthalung province. For Honda car owners in the affected areas, Honda offered 30 percent discounts on those auto parts that are not included in the customer’s car insurance policy.

Youth Focus Homework help - Some tips to stay ahead by Karen Wilson

students motivated and make them realize their abilities and capabilities. This way, the students stay focused on their work and complete it in the best possible manner. While it is essential to point out faults or shortcomings in the kids’ work, it is equally important to give them positive feedback from time to time to keep their spirits high. When students are unable to complete their homework due to any reason, they can seek professional academic help from the experts. Homework is one activity that stays with every student all through his academic life. Even the first grader is supposed to complete the work assigned to him by his teacher. Sometimes, the tasks assigned to the students are so voluminous that it wears out the patience of the parents as well as kids. The activity which used to be fun-filled and interesting at one point in time

to them as they were supposed to complete a lot of tasks. They can also keep in touch with a few classmates so that they can call each other in case they forget any assignment. Help your kid feel confident Many times, the homework assigned to the student may be highly complicated, and the student may not be able to complete the same. In such a situation, they may lose their confidence. The teachers and parents need to buck up the students and ensure that they don’t undermine themselves.

becomes wearisome. The kids start stalling and procrastinate and try everything in the book to avoid it. Following some strategies, this common headache can be easily taken care of. The teachers have shared these strategies:

Share your kids’ workload Sometimes, the students’ workload is so high that the parents have to chip in and lighten the same. This help may be needed when the students don’t understand the assigned task, or the task is too complicated to understand, or the kid is too exhausted to complete his work. Once in a while, even the teachers allow the kids to seek the help of their parents.

Complete the task as early as possible It is important that kids finish their assigned work as early as possible and get it over and done with. The parents must set a schedule for the kids and ensure that they stick to it. It is because once the assigned work is over, the kids can heave a sigh of relief and enjoy the rest of the time playing or pursuing other fun-filled activities. Make a call list to avoid forgetting anything If a kid gets a lot of work to be completed, it is best to make a list so that one doesn’t forget anything. There are many times when the students tend to forget one or two tasks assigned

Motivate your child It is, the parents' and teachers duty to keep the

Teach the child to work hard Make your child understand that completing o n e’s h o m e w o r k i s j u s t revisiting whatever has been taught in the class which is going to help them gain better understanding of the subject. This revisit will also help them identify their shortcomings and realize their strengths. This hard work will surely help them to gain better results in their examinations. Habit of Writing Completing this task at home also inculcates the habit of writing which comes in handy while writing examinations. Thus, the students must be prepared to work diligently. Moreover, writing the tasks assigned to them also helps them learn the topic. This simplifies their work to a significant extent as they are already prepared with the examination. There are many theories about the advantages and disadvantages of homework. On one hand, there are theories that talk about the benefits coming to a student from homework, while at the same time, there are people who think that there is little or no purpose served with this entire activity. The latter category of people also reiterate that it is better for the students to be more attentive in the class when a particular subject is being taught instead of revisiting at home. Whatever may be the popular notion, when a student is assigned a lot of tasks, he must learn ways to complete the same in the most effective manner and to the best of his abilities.

ASSESSMENT The testing of students is one of the most hotly-debated topics in education. Much of this ‘heat’ tends to be applied to the issue of standardised tests: their fairness, accuracy, inclusivity, etc. However, ‘testing’ forms only a small part of the overall practice of assessment which has become one of the main activities undertaken by today’s teachers. Whilst most people understand (indeed, often painfully remember!) the process of sitting standardised tests and public exams, much of the rest of assessment practice is less widely known or understood. To shed some light on these other assessment procedures I shall enlist the help of Chris Kyriacou, professor of Educational Psychology at the University of York, U.K. and author of, amongst many other distinguished titles, one of the essential texts for the novice teacher – “Essential Teaching Skills”.

by Matthew Bolton testing (such as weekly spellings or times tables). Whilst, ideally, pupils should be generally unaware that formative assessment is taking place, it is important that teachers are conscious of the results. These results can indicate what proportion of a class have grasped a particular learning objective and can be used to establish the extent to which learning has taken place for individuals, or groups of individuals, within a class. This can then be used to inform planning and differentiation. Summative assessment, by contrast, is a formal process that is conducted at the end of a given time period such as the end of a module, year or key stage. This type of assessment is intended to provide evidence of what has been learned and to demonstrate progress. The results of these tests often form the basis of reporting to parents and generate data about the overall

Professor Kyriacou identifies six key educational purposes for assessment: 1. To provide teachers with feedback about pupils’ progress 2. To provide pupils with educative feedback 3. To motivate pupils 4. To provide a record of progress 5. To provide a statement of current attainment 6. To assess pupils’ readiness for future learning These six purposes can be divided into two categories that broadly correspond either to the ongoing teacher/learner relationship or to the teaching and learning outcomes of that relationship at a certain point in time. These two categories are known as formative and summative assessment respectively and constitute what could be considered the lowest common denominators of assessment types. Acccording to Professor Kyriacou, formative assessment aims to “promote effective further learning by pupils”. It is a continuous, usually informal, process largely undertaken in the course of normal classroom activity. Key elements would include question-and-answer sessions; monitoring and discussing classroom work; homework and informal classroom

performance of pupils, cohorts and the school as a whole. It is this area of summative assessment that has generated the controversy I referred to at the start. In particular, a commonly held feeling that there is an over-emphasis on summative assessment in current educational practice. These concerns centre around doubts about the validity of the impression that they can create of a given pupil, teacher or school’s performance and the tensions they can generate between a desire to encourage holistic progress and the pressure to produce good results. In my opinion it is a mistake to view these two types of assessment as separate, even antagonistic, processes. However much formative assessment is conducted, it is important to stop and check the degree to which learning has taken place at key moments. However, rather than generating data for external use, the most effective use of summative assessment data is to inform planning, target-setting and the next round of formative assessments, thus creating a symbiotic, rather than antagonistic, relationship between the two. Matthew Bolton is the deputy head of Primary and Year 2 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories You had best forget the Watergate tapes and the Hitler diaries. If you are looking for something really riveting, try the bombshell theory that the British secret service in 1945 murdered Benito Mussolini at the end of the war to prevent his spilling the beans about Winston Churchill. The notion originated in a book by an Italian historian Renzo De Felice but it still does the

gossip and conspiracy theory rounds on a fairly regular basis in newspapers and on the internet. It is alleged that the British prime minister had conducted a long correspondence with the Duce before and even during the war. But Churchill became worried as the war drew to as close that, if Mussolini was captured and put on trial, he might well make

Winston Churchill murdered Mussolini Or so they want you to believe in Italy

some highly embarrassing disclosures. One of these could well be that Churchill had offered the Italians control of Dalmatia and a number of Mediterranean islands if Musso would stay out of the war and not join Hitler. The theory goes on to state that the Duce was carrying a black bag at the time of his arrest by partisans in north Italy, near Lake Como, in April 1945 which contained all manner of secrets arising from his ongoing links with Churchill. Mussolini had even asked Churchill to get him a job after the war as he would no longer be the boss of a country. An associated idea is that Mussolini accidentally dropped the bag into the water at Lake Como during the struggle to take him prisoner. Churchill was so determined to recover the bag that he visited the area in 1946 on the pretext he was on a painting holiday. The problem is that there is no proof of these wild allegations. One Churchill biographer, Andrew Roberts, points out to imagine such a correspondence

belies everything we know about Churchill during that period. The British wartime leader would hardly compromise himself by writing confidentially to a fascist leader whose main claim to fame was kowtowing to Adolf Hitler. Of course, other writers have also accused Churchill of ordering the murder of Heinrich Himmler because the Gestapo head knew of secret negotiations during the war. It has even been suggested that Churchill ordered the rescue of Martin Bormann, Hitler’s secretary,

from the Berlin bunker in 1945 because he had been a British spy all along. Easy to allege but impossible to prove. We now know that at least two historians secretly added fake documents to files held in the public record office to give weight to their absurd suggestions. So how did the British secret service actually murder Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci? One theory is that shot him and substituted his body for another one which is famously shown in the newsreels as hanging

upside down outside an Esso petrol station in Milan. Mussolini’s corpse by that stage had been mutilated and become so bloated that it is impossible to be sure of the identity. Another theory is that British secret agents simply egged on the partisans to execute Mussolini and did not actually themselves pull any triggers. The so-called conspiracy death theory for the Duce rests on slender foundations indeed. There is no evidence whatsoever that Churchill maintained a wartime correspondence with the Italian leader. Although researchers still occasionally poke around in the waters of Lake Como they are usually looking for gold or treasure abandoned at the end of the war rather than desperately searching for a black bag of secrets. In recent years, the writers who popularized the unlikely tale have remained very silent indeed. Presumably they were happy to make some money from a couple of best sellers in the 1990s and some magazine articles. The whole episode illustrates Italy’s melodramatic fascination with Benito Mussolini whose family tomb still attracts thousands of visitors and worshippers every year. The best conclusion to draw is not to believe much of what you read in the Italian media.

Nine cheap romantic date ideas for couples It used to be that a movie and dinner was standard date fare. But with the price of movies and restaurants these days, who can afford that?

But you don’t have to resort to Netflix and a value meal to have a romantic date that’s also affordable! No one said that dating had to be dinner and a movie – there are plenty of ways to enjoy each other’s company on cheap; especially smart if you’re looking towards the long term. For just a few dollars, you and your man can have a cheap, romantic date. After all, it’s less about how much you spend, and more about who you spend it with. 1. Trip To The Bookstore If you and your man are both readers, bookstores are a great date choice – especially if the bookstore has a coffee shop inside. Show him your favorite books and check out his, talk about your favorite authors and maybe pick up a copy of the Kama Sutra to continue the date at home… 2. Be A Kid Again

Think up one of your favorite childhood memories – flying kites on the beach? Roller-skating in the park? Whatever it is, pack a picnic lunch and do it together. 3. Walk For Ice Cream Take a bus downtown and walk around while eating an ice cream cone together. Window shop and enjoy the outdoor air while people watching. Of course, there’s method to our madness: walking together has been shown to increase the libido and improve sexual satisfaction, so your ice cream stroll just might turn into something more! 4. Take A Hike

If you’re a bit more adventurous – or not near a downtown area – why not go for an afternoon nature hike? Head up a nearby hill or mountain and choose a scenic outlook to relax, have a picnic, and enjoy the romantic view together. 5. Stay Home And Pamper Yourselves A lack of cash is a great excuse to stay home and enjoy some indoor fun. Fill up the tub with bubbles and take turns soaping each other up. Later, you can trade off on full body massages. Be prepared to sleep in the next morning. 6. Visit To The Museum

Top 10 Health Benefits of Strawberries

by Top 10 Home Remedies

There’s nothing like eating fresh strawberries. Their mild, sweet taste and juicy texture can make anyone fall in love with these red berries. A close relative to the rose, strawberries are the only fruit that carries its seeds outside rather than within. Their tempting look and spectacular taste have made them one of the most popular fruits among people of all ages. The simplest and most common way to enjoy this fruit is to eat them in raw form. You can also use them in ice cream, jellies, jam, syrups, baked goods, chocolates and more. Whether fresh or frozen, these berries have an impressive amount of health benefits that may surprise you. They are an excellent source of vitamins C and K as well as folic acid, magnesium, manganese and potassium. With just 49 calories per cup, these berries are relatively low in sugar and a good source of dietary fiber. They also contain significant amounts of phytonutrients and flavonoids. With over 600 varieties of strawberries, they are one of the top fruits rich in antioxidants. Here are the top 10 health benefits of strawberries.

the inflammatory response within the body, which is one of the major causes of heart disease. 3. Maintains Healthy Skin The several antioxidants in strawberries, including vitamin C, help prevent damage to the skin and body caused by free radicals. Vitamin C contributes to the production of collagen in the skin, which is needed for maintaining skin elasticity and resilience. Also, strawberries are capable of protecting your skin against the damage of UV-B rays. Anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant in strawberries, protects the skin from the damaging effects of the environment, especially the sun. The antioxidant power of anthrocyanin lasts up to 24 hours after consumption. Also, the lycopene in strawberries helps fight skin aging signs. Regular consumption of strawberries makes your skin look younger and healthier, without signs of aging like wrinkles and age spots. 4. Helps Fight Cancer Strawberry consumption is also associated with a lower risk for esophageal, breast, colon, prostate and skin cancer.

A walk together through a nearby museum can be tons of fun. Whether it’s art or natural history, you can have fun holding hands and discussing the exhibits. Don’t forget to spend a little time smooching in a secluded corner! 7. Create Your Own Private Blackout Every noticed how romantic it gets when the power goes out? Well, it always does in the movies! Why not bring a little of that ambiance into your life? Turn off all the lights and electronic devices (including cell phones!), and make sure the windows are closed up tight. Light a bunch of candles and make a pillow fort on the living room rug. Snuggling with wine is not optional. 8. Paint A Room In Your Home No, this isn’t just an excuse to get your man to do your home improvement! There’s something about painting that brings the romantic in all of us. Him, manly in his jeans and work shirt; you looking cute in old sweats and one of his old tee shirts… There’s a very good chance you’ll be rolling around on the floor before the trim is finished! 9. Play 20 Questions It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been dating, I bet there are things you haven’t learned about each other yet. Both of you can write down 20 questions – things you want to know about the other. Snuggle on the couch with a bottle of wine, and ask away! For additional information on romance, health, fitness, beauty, skin care, hair care and more, go to www. urbanewomen.com.

1. Regulates Blood Pressure Strawberries are highly recommended for people who have high blood pressure. In fact, regular consumption of strawberries even helps prevent hypertension. It also maintains healthy oxygen levels by supporting a consistent blood flow throughout the body. Being a natural source of potassium, strawberries aid in controlling blood pressure because potassium lessens the effects of sodium. In fact, low potassium intake is one of the risk factors for developing high blood pressure. In addition, the magnesium content in them contributes to the reduction of blood pressure and improvement of blood flow and oxygenation. Plus, the vitamin C in strawberries aids in keeping blood pressure under control, especially when dealing with stress. 2. Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Disease T h e h u g e a m o u n t o f f i b e r, antioxidants, phytochemicals and vitamins in strawberries help balance the cholesterol levels in the blood and simultaneously reinforce the cardiac muscle. By reducing the bad cholesterol in the blood, which causes plaque to build up in arteries, strawberries play a key role in lowering cardiovascular diseases as well as strokes. Furthermore, these berries decrease

The high vitamin C (an antioxidant) in strawberries can help with cancer prevention, since a healthy immune system is the body’s best defense. Antioxidants are scavengers to free radicals and neutralize the potentially negative effect they can have on cells. Also, the phytochemicals, such as quercetin and ellagic acid, found in strawberries yield anticancer properties like suppressing cancer cell growth. 5. Boosts Immunity Strawberries contain vitamin C, which plays an important role in boosting your immunity. In fact, just one serving of strawberries contains 51.5 mg of vitamin C, which is about half of your daily requirement. Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, helps the white blood cells function properly so that they can respond quickly to infections. It also enables the body to combat toxins and foreign bodies. Also, vitamin C helps fight against the free radicals, which can cause damage to DNA or healthy cells, leading to numerous diseases like heart disease or cancer. Regular consumption of strawberries can help with common problems like coughs, colds and other infections. 6. Combats Arthritis and Gout Harmful free radicals in the body lead to the buildup of toxins and acids, which are the underlying cause of the degeneration of muscles and tissues as

well as drying up fluid in the body. This can increase the risk of arthritis and gout. Being rich in antioxidants, strawberries assist the body to flush out all the harmful waste and toxins. This in turn combats arthritis and gout. A l s o, t h e a n t i - i n f l a m m a t o r y nature of strawberries helps reduce inflammation of the joints, which may help reduce pain and swelling, two common symptoms of arthritis. In fact, intake of strawberries prevents elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an indication of inflammation in the body. Also, strawberries help protect the body from pro-inflammatory molecules called cytokines. Plus, strawberries are a good source of folic acid. People suffering from arthritis may lack in folic acid. 7. Improves Cognitive Function Strawberries contain high levels of antioxidants that protect cells from damage by harmful free radicals. Also, there are certain compounds in these berries that change the way neurons in the brain communicate. These changes prevent inflammation in the brain that contribute to neuronal damage and improve both motor control and cognition. Due to their ability to defend against oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, strawberries can help prevent loss of memory and diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. 8. Aids Diabetes Management Strawberries make an excellent choice for people with diabetes. Being a low glycemic index food and high in fiber, strawberries help regulate blood sugar and keep it stable by avoiding extreme highs and lows. Also, the fiber helps slow the absorption of sugars in the blood. Plus, strawberries help in maintaining a healthy weight, which is one of the best defenses against Type 2 diabetes. For diabetic people, the suggested serving size is ¾ cup of strawberries daily. 9. Promotes Eye Health Strawberries are good for your eye health, mainly due to their high vitamin C content. According to the American Optometric Association, vitamin C intake is important for eye health. This antioxidant lowers the risk of developing cataracts by helping the body fight free-radical damage. It also provides protection against eye diseases, such as glaucoma. Vitamin C is also important for strengthening the eye’s cornea and retina. When taken with other essential nutrients, vitamin C slows the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and visual acuity loss. AMD is the leading cause of blindness among older people. Another important nutrient in strawberries that is considered good for your eye health is potassium. Without potassium, water levels in the body can get out of balance and lead to dry eyes. Furthermore, potassium helps to balance the ocular pressure in the eyes. Any disturbance in this pressure can be very harmful for the eyes. 10. Supports a Healthy Pregnancy For women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, including strawberries in your diet is important. This is mainly due to the rich folate content in strawberries, which is essential for the formation and development of the baby’s brain in the early stages of pregnancy. Plus, an adequate amount of folate intake during pregnancy helps reduce the risk of birth defects. Along with folic acid, strawberries are also a good source of iodine, which plays a key role in brain development, but even a mild deficiency during pregnancy can harm the baby’s brain development. At the same time, strawberries provide calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and other vital nutrients that are important for the health of the expecting mothers as well as the unborn babies. Local Sports PSC Tropical golf from BJ's Kissy B Too Good! by Derek Brook

Mountain Shadow (Stableford) One of our regular trips and even at this time of the year one of the best priced, we had many golfers who wanted to go and be tested by this tough course. So as usual into cars and off we went. This is always a difficult course and losing balls here is easy and if you had a franchise for collecting lost balls it would be quite profitable. Indeed the trees must contain a lot of lost balls and the water hazards even more. Four balls in two holes was my record for the day and I was not the only one. The course was in its most difficult mood with a bit of a breeze and the threat of some rain all the way around. However, the day proved a good walk around even if some said the greens were below their normal standard. Personally, I thought they were fine, as when they are super fast this course can be unplayable. There was actually hot water in the showers, however, I got the old friend of a towel,

Winners with one of BJ’s Finest but this changing facility is quite good really, especially when, as on this day, we have hot water. Still soon through there we visited the restaurant where the food is actually quite good. Soon back at BJ’s it was time to declare the results. In the A flight, 0 to 19, the winner was Tom Herrington with 40 points ahead of a countback on 38 points that saw Brian Parish in second and John Davis in third. In fourth was Paul Sharples with 34 points. In the B Flight, 20 up, the winner was Dick Warberg

with 38 points ahead of Patrick Poussier in second with 37 points. We then had a countback on 35 points that saw Barry Elphick in third and Dave Cooper in fourth. The best score on the first nine was 19 points by Derek Brook, and the best score in the back nine was 19 points by John Anderson. Then it was time as usual to test the ‘Cold Uns’. T.T.F.N. Silky Oak – St The PSC Tropical golfers made another visit to Silky Oak. After our end of the year ‘Wine Fest’ round in December, and the influx of tourists making booking a bit of a challenge, Silky Oak was again the choice for the day. And not a bad choice it was with a very competitive all-in-rate, a little later tee time, and no wait on the first tee. Pretty surprising for this time of the year, but our first group, a three-ball, were off and did not see the group that had teed off before us until well into the back nine. Just about “Millionaires Golf ” as they say! The only question about this course seems to be the state of the greens on any given day, so how would they play this day. All would get a good test of the greens right from the start as a recent visitor from Germany, Herr Jorg, made a donation if we would have a 1st hole prize for ‘long first putt’, evidently, Jorg had never seen a competition with prizes for ‘long putts’ and found them to his liking. Other than being on the slow side, the greens rolled pretty true and on this first hole the pin

Silky Oaks Two busloads and a few cars left the Growling Swan in high spirits as the weather looked promising despite constant rain overnight. The challenge of taking on Silky Oak was ahead. We were all gathered at the white markers. Everyone was quite as the first group stepped up to challenge the 150 yard water carry to the fairway. The course was in good condition with the threat of rain in the distance, fortunately the rain stayed away and left us with a good day for golf. It’s a shame the scores did not reflect this. This course is a delight to play with its generous fairways and water carrying hazards, strategically placed but still offering the golfer plenty of scope to hit the fairways.

Keith Buchanan and Andy Zwart Today’s event gave us two divisions, A-Flight was 0 to21 and B-Flight 22 plus. Keith Buchanan took out A flight with a score that I am sure that he would have thought would not have got him there. Alex Field came in second three points behind. Bill Steinmann filled third spot. In B flight, Andy Zwart returned with the score of the day, followed by John Coetzee only one point in arrears. Colin Steilow continued in his recent good form to take third place on the podium.

had four different names, each putt longer than the previous. It seems the golfers came to play! So with the weather fine with a bit of a breeze, all were finished in reasonable time and stopped at one of the several F and B outlets for a quick drink while the scores were tabulated. Then back in the cars and out to the 36 highway construction heading back to BJ’s Holiday Lodge for the presentation. With 18 players this day and only one flight, it would be interesting to see how the wide range of course handicaps would compete against one another with the water carries off the tees that this course presents. Well evidently all managed pretty well. Right

into a count-back for first with 40 points saw Don Carmody (course h’cap 29) taking the top spot over Landis Brooks(9). Third place went to John Davis (14) with 38 points followed in fourth by Torsten Bischoff (29) with 38. Seems like the course played well for all levels. Local Sports Golf from Bunker Boys “The Viper” strikes as “The Bear Fights” on

by Frank Quinlan

Pleasant Valley (blue tees) Stableford Sixteen players made the trip up Highway 7 to a course bathed in bright sunlight with a light breeze blowing. Play commenced ahead of time and proceeded to conclusion without any delays or hold ups. The course was in fine condition, but the greens were found to be very slow compared to courses we have played recently and many players just couldn’t handle the greens. Shot of the day was courtesy of Eddie Kelly who through some divine intervention managed to skip his drive off the water and onto the fringe of the island green, seems it pays to be a good catholic. Honours for the day went to the seldom seen Jim Payne with a well compiled 38 points, two back was Michael Brett and a further two back on 34 the mercurial Andy Brady. It’s good to see both Jim Payne and Tony Berry back on the course again after recent medical challenges. Just a note to management that the very slippery tiles in the men’s change room shower area need attention before someone gets hurt. As usual on Wednesdays, delicious homecooked food was a feature back at the M Club. Results: 1st - Jim Payne (35) 38 points 2nd - Michael Brett (17) 36 points 3rd - Andy Brady (17) 34 points Near Pins: Michael Brett, Tony Berry, Neil Carter Khao Kheow (yellow tees) Stableford Twenty-three players made the trip to Khao Kheow for today’s round. As always the course was in very good condition, however, a very stiff breeze made an already challenging course even more difficult. Play got under way ahead of our scheduled tee off time and the round was completed without any holdups within four hours, a very welcome change from the previous Friday. Having teased a few players with the “Golfer of the Month” award, Colin Greig decided to increase his lead at the head of the pack

Jimmy Carr and won the A flight with 35 points, beating fellow Scott, Andy Brady into second place on countback. The departing Stuart Tinkler had to satisfy himself with third place on countback and also bagged his customary near pin. In the B flight, Jimmy Carr made a long-awaited return to form with yet another 35 points, followed by Les Hall on, you guessed it, 35 points. PJ Redmond playing his first game of the year was third on 33 points. It must be some kind of club record to have five of the six winners and place getters all on 35 points, Richard Baldotto, who was identified as one to watch last week, did find himself in the winners’ circle today with a third place in B flight with a very modest 29 points. Results: A Flight (0-17.3) 1st - Colin Greig (9) 35 oco 2nd - Andy Brady (17) 35 oco 3rd - Stuart Tinkler (14) 35 points B Flight (17.4+) 1st - Jimmy Carr (18) 35 oco 2nd - Les Hall (21) 35 points 3rd - P J Redman (27) 33 points Near Pins: Stuart Tinkler, Andy Brady, Ken Davidson, Mashi Kaneta

"Tourist two, local two" Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Yes, there are many changes happening here at Rayong Green Valley but a little birdy told me there is no planned closure as of yet. Golf in Pattaya has so many rumours flying but as of this writing, RGV will stay open through the summer. Speaking of closures, has anybody heard why the Rayong C.C. is closed? Did they find a Sugar Daddy to do what Chang Breweries did to Pattavia Century? We sure hope so as this area needs another golf course as bad as Soi L.K. Metro needs another Go-Go bar! Whoops, sorry about that Jason! Loads of great scores out there today, it must have been the perfect weather we have been having of late. The postman only rang once and 37 points were just enough to get Dave Ferris up on the podium. Ishi is back with a vengeance and 38 was his fine total. Tied at 39, Stefan and Peter had to share that second place today whilst visiting Vancouverite David Johl tore up the back nine to tally a big 40 on the scorecard for the win. Apologies to Fred Birch, how could I possibly forget his amazing 47 point round two weeks ago!

Crystal Bay It was 24 golfers that had chosen to take on Crystal Bay Golf Club on this fine Pattaya morning. According to all reports the track was in fine nick, plenty of run, the greens played true and more importantly no threat of rain. Everyone eagerly boarded the buses on time and not a word was heard as I believe that some were looking to catch up on some sleep that was missed the night before. The weather was hot, however a stiff breeze granted all some welcome relief from the heat. We played from the yellow tees which (as we knew) produced some good scores. We played B and C nines! With two divisions, we played A flight zero to 18 and B flight 19 plus. A flight saw the viper, Mark Stapleton, return the best score of the day with a very good score of 42 points, followed closely by Colm Lawlor with Mashi Kaneta taking out third posy. B flight had another great score returned by the bear, Mick Wilks, coming in with his best score at The Swan, 41 points. Second was Shane Young (a few shots behind) with Allan Ray filling third spot.

Phil took down the sign-up sheet early for this course as our seven tee times were fully booked. Cheap and cheerful is how we would describe the Navy course but surprisingly there are some of the best laid out holes in Pattaya out here. That pretty par-three lighthouse hole is one that is the envy of every golf course owner in Pattaya. This golf course boasts of elevation changes and some of the tee shots here are comparable to Soi Dao without the three hour drive. Condition of the course is marginal, but we can forgive those trespasses for the cost, accessibility and beauty of the layout. If I may suggest those bunkers could be raked every few weeks please? It just shows to go that you do not necessarily need a big name golf course architect to plan out a lovely design. Did you know that this is one of the oldest courses in the area and started life as a mere nine-hole track? David Johl wins again today even after being cut a stroke and our old pal Pete Hynard took a second with a nifty 37, proving there is still life in the old dog yet. Not only that but Pete claimed the Caddy Smile near pin as well. Just one shot back was a three-way tie for third at that 36 point mark. Bud, Wayne

We have supported the efforts and investment here since the get-go and Pattavia Century has never let us down. It even has been chosen to host the final singles round of the Mulberry Ryder Cup for 2017 on February 9, so watch this space for results! We were off the white tees today and at 6,639 yards it was a tough old slog. That being said, there were some very good scores turned in! Blake Hanna found his form on at least one hole today and that resulted in a comfortable tapin par to win the Caddy Smile near pin contest. Bahadur Lidder turned in 37 points for the fourth place. Our visiting buddy back from Japan, Masao “Ishi” Ishikawa, had a terrific 38 out there, which anyone would be happy with at Pattavia. Ishi tied with the postman Dave Ferris for second. Dave is usually home on the range at 7 am when it is still cool out there and banging away two or three trays. It seems to be working! Nobody could touch Gary Emmett, and with a 40 pointer; it was a well-earned win for our Aussie mate. Good to have Gary on our squad for the Pattaya Matchplay tournament! T -2nd – Dave Ferris (21) 38 points 4th – BahadurLidder (15) 37 points The Emerald – Stableford – White Tees As the cliché goes, the Emerald is a real gem of a golf course. It is hard not to like this track and the relatively easy first couple of holes creates the impression that it will be a push-over and a 40 point round is on the cards. I do like a course that lets you get a few holes in to warm up, but don’t be fooled, there is a beast behind this beauty. Like the Navy course and Pattavia that we played earlier this week, this is a modest golf course with a humble little clubhouse. What all three of these courses share is the playability, pricing and the enjoyment factor. It must have been hard work out there, judging from the scoring. Not one golfer shot to their handicap, and Mark Wood took third place with only a 33 on the card. Andy Leach could only muster a 34, and the winner got away with 35 Stableford points. That is a low number for Alan Rothwell who had his best round in Thailand last week! You & Your Pets Are you prepared for an emergency? Most of us have given some thought to protecting our families should a disaster strike. But have you provided for the safety and care of your pet in the event of an emergency? Remember, pets are especially vulnerable; they can’t fend for themselves. Thailand has had its share of natural disasters, ranging from floods to fires. Should such an event occur, it’s important to be ready by planning ahead to ensure your pet’s survival, beginning with evacuation procedures. Many shelters, for example, do not allow pets to accompany their owners. So it’s up to you to find out now where to go and how to get your pet there safely. When an emergency occurs, the first step of any pet evacuation plan is to quickly and safely remove your pet from harm’s way. Your pet may be inclined to run and hide, so be sure to rehearse a “come” command with your dog and identify a reliable way to find your cat, maybe by opening a can of food. Also practice putting your cat in a carrier

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. and getting your dog in and out of the car. The more you practice, the more comfortable they’ll be. Assembling an emergency go-kit well in advance of a disaster will ensure that nothing gets left behind. Your pet emergency kit should include at least first aid supplies, collar with ID tag, your vet’s contact information, and one of your pet’s favorite toys or blankets. Also

ensure a temporary supply of water and food. Keep in mind, too, that disasters can strike when you’re not home. Notify neighbors that you have pets in your home and display a sticker on your front door or window to let first responders know how many pets are inside. Remember to include your veterinarian’s contact information.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well-being.

For obvious reasons this lovely family of three special cats must go to a new home together. They are indoor cats here so it would be great for someone who lives in an apartment. They are very friendly but will need a while to get used to a new home and family.

Shelley

This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago, she was sick when she was small and so missed the opportunity to be chosen. Her mum "Zero" is here as well, they would make a perfect pair for someone.

Zero

Zero is an old timer and spends most of her time chilling out in the garden in some shady spot or other. She loves her food and will run at a great pace as soon as she hears a tin of tuna being opened !

People meds for pets While most medications meant for humans should not be shared with pets, Benadryl® is a notable exception. The antihistamine is commonly used to treat many symptoms, including allergies and car sickness. However, you should only give this drug to your cat or dog if and when it is recommended by your veterinarian. The antihistamine (diphenhydramine) counteracts the cause inflammation and itchiness as part of an allergic reaction by blocking histamine receptors on small blood vessels and smooth muscles. When histamine attaches to these receptors, it causes these vessels to widen causing inflammation and itchiness and muscles around the airways to contract, which causes difficulty

breathing. Benadryl also works as an antimotion sickness in dogs by blocking

impulses to the vomiting center in the brain. Again, consult your vet before administering.

Going to the Dogs... Labradors [are] lousy watchdogs. They usually bark when there is a stranger about, but it is an expression of unmitigated joy at the chance to meet somebody new, not a warning.

~Norman Strung

Rock star Ozzy Osborne saved his wife Sharon’s Pomeranian from a coyote by tackling and wresting the coyote until it released the dog. Penguins spend several hours a day preening or caring for their feathers; if they don’t keep them well maintained, their feathers would not stay waterproof. For extra protection, penguins spread oil on their feathers. The oil comes from a special gland near their tail feathers.

Cat Corner Tip Scratch This Cats like to scratch. Get used to it. They scratch during play, while stretching, to mark territory and to sharpen their claws. Unfortunately, all this scratching can cause a lot of damage to furniture, drapes, carpeting and door and window screens. The best tactic is not to scold or try to stop your cat from scratching, but instead to teach her where and what to scratch. Provide her with appropriate, cat-attractive surfaces and objects to scratch, such as scratching posts and pads. When you catch her scratching your favorite chair, pick her up and put in her front of the scratching post, encouraging her to scratch with affirmations and perhaps a treat. Do not force her paws on the post. You might try rubbing the post with catnip.
