Visas in the pipeline T

hai authorities have promised a variety of new visas for foreigners entering and staying in the country. But, so far at least, the all-important detail is lacking. Thus Kobkarn Wattanavarangkul, minister of tourism and sports, recently announced that an electronic visa project supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will kick off next year. This appears to be an initial response to the growing demand for an ASEAN-wide tourist visa which would seek to imitate the single-visa Schengen policy practiced in some areas of Europe. That policy means that visa applicants must obtain their approval at the first Schengen country they intend to visit. But they are then able to travel freely within the 26-nation group. It is unlikely that an ASEAN-wide tourist visa will be introduced as early as next year. For the present, the various countries have widely different policies. Thus Vietnam does not require a

prior visa for the nationals of 23 countries including ASEAN nationals, but most Europeans and all Americans still need to apply in advance. On the other hand, Cambodia issues visas-on-arrival to virtually all foreigners and charges a flat fee of 30 US dollars for a month’s tourism stay. It is likely that the Thai minister’s intention to introduce an electronic visa next year would cover just one

or two countries, apart from Thailand, the most likely candidate being Cambodia. Thus a foreigner, say from Europe, would apply from a Thai embassy abroad for a joint visa enabling travel between the two countries. In other words, comprehensive visa-free travel for nonASEAN nationals will take a long time to implement fully as there are many security and policy issues to address in the

meantime. Another Thai visa in the pipeline is the promised 10year retirement visa which is now under detailed review by immigration authorities. To date, the suggested requirements are a bigger foreign income or a larger cash deposit in a Thai bank than the current baseline of 800,000 baht or equivalent in foreign currency. News Visas in the pipeline Continued from page 1 rumours concern compulsory medical insurance which could prove problematical for elderly expats. But it is not clear whether the proposed 10-year visa will replace current rules for an annual visa, or merely be an additional option, and whether current holders of the retirement visa would be safeguarded on current regulations in a big reorganization. In the past, one-year visa holders have been protected in a concept known as “grandfathering”. Clarity on all these matters is likely months away. Meanwhile, the Thai government continues its policy of restricting in-out visa runs, believing that many aliens are using this loophole to work illegally in the kingdom. Thus it was been announced that, from August this year, immigration officers will scrutinize carefully the passports of foreigners arriving by air to ascertain if they are “living” in Thailand without a prior and approved visa. The policy of restricting visa runners at land crossings is already in operation. However, foreigners with double or multiple-entry visas in their passports appear to be unaffected by the new restrictions as the crackdown appears to be concentrated on those with 15 or 30 day visas or exemptions. In a

separate announcement, the government also announced last month that travellers arriving at land bordercrossings would now receive 30 days on arrival, irrespective of nationality, but only twice in a calendar year. On the third attempt, they would be refused entry. Immigration specialists say that the common core behind all these initiatives is to attract wealthier foreigners on a long stay basis, whilst restricting repeated-entry for those who do not have an authorized visa. As visitors from Europe and the United States decline in number, or remain static, the numbers from China continue to boom in spite of the alleged crackdown on zero-sum vacations. Research now shows that Chinese visitors spend more money on shopping in Thailand than any other nationality. This trend, as income rises in China, can be expected to grow and not only in the tourist market. Thus the relaunch of the elite card is targeting rich Chinese businessmen and retirees who are prepared to pay a one-off fee in return for visa and other privileges. A 20-year elite card costs an initial 2 million baht, whereas the “baby” version for five years requires an upfront payment of 500,000 baht. There are currently no income requirements or compulsory health insurance restrictions.

Our Community A family connection It was around 1969 when Father Ray Brennan first arrived in Pattaya. The American priest had spent almost a decade in the north of the Kingdom and arriving in Pattaya was the first time in many years that he got to smell the sea. He was based mainly at the Catholic seminary in Sri Racha, but also traveled down to Pattaya for regular Sunday masses, eventually moving to Pattaya full time . In those days Pattaya was, according to Father Ray, ‘still a fishing village where you could swim with dolphins in the bay’. But by the time he died in August 2003 Pattaya had changed, grown in size, and he had set up several social projects offering support to those in need. He opened facilities for children who were orphaned, or who had been abandoned and neglected and also for runways who found themselves living on the streets. He also founded two schools, one for deaf toddlers and another for blind and visually impaired children, as well as a vocational training center for young adults living with a disability. Father Ray was one of three siblings who grew up in the city of Chicago. His elder brother, Don, became a priest while his younger sister Sharron married, had five daughters of her own and is now a proud grandmother to twelve grandchildren. Sharron has kept in touch with the Foundation which is named after her brother, and she has kept the memory of her brother alive in her own family. All five of her daughters have traveled to Pattaya and all spent time with Uncle Ray, but now there is a new generation who want to be involved. Seventeen year old Hayley is Sharron’s eldest grandchild, making her Father Ray’s eldest great niece, and she has just arrived here in Pattaya to volunteer at the Father Ray Foundation. Not only did Hayley arrive, but she was accompanied on her first ever trip outside of the US by her mum, Megan, and her grandmother, Sharron. Having Sharron visit is a bit like having royalty visit. All the children and students at the Foundation have heard of Father Ray, but most of the children were not even born when he died, and none of the students ever met him, but they all know who he is and what he did for them. A week-long drive was launched and resulted in many, many boxes-full of items, which will be sent to the foundation. The Hand to Hand Foundation is one of the school’s chosen charities for this year.

Free Electricity by Derek Franklin

Contrary to popular belief, charitable organizations in Thailand do not receive free electricity; they have to pay like everyone else and Pattaya’s largest charitable organization, Father Ray Foundation, each year receives an electric bill that would shock most people. The Father Ray Foundation has eight different projects located on five separate sites around Pattaya. The main complex on Sukhumvit Road not only houses the headquarters of the Foundation, but also the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities, Father Ray Day Care Center, the Redemptorist Center, the Foundation for People with Disabilities and the newly opened Father Ray

Center for Children with Special Needs. The School for the Blind is in Naklua, the Children’s Home is close to the Pattaya United Stadium, the Children’s Village is out near Lake Mabprachan and the Drop-In Center is on Thepprasit Road. All these projects use electricity, a lot of it, and the annual electric bill for the whole Foundation is almost six and a half million baht. Yes, you read that right, six and a half million baht per year. So you can only imagine how happy the management team was when a long time friend of the Foundation announced that he was going to be selling his boat in the South of France, and when he did he would be presenting a

But he in s is te d tha t wouldn’t be giving cash, instead he purchased seven hundred solar panels, and as they arrived from China a professional installer arrived from France and it took seven months to install them on the roofs of three buildings at the Father Ray Foundation. The company which installed the panels has now set up an office here in

Pattaya where, according to the director, Thailand is the perfect place to install the panels due to the amount of sunshine each year. In fact so perfect that the panels installed at the Father Ray Foundation will last for 25 years and save the organization 1,300,000 baht each year, money that can be spent helping more children in need. Italian Vino Extravaganza at Eastin Grand Sathorn Bangkok

Cuccina Italiano and Zenato Amarone Classico “La Bomba” by John K. Lindgren

T.G.I.F. (Thank God It's Friday!) After encountering chock-a-bloc evening traffic we arrive at the towering, swank Eastin Grand Sathorn Hotel. (BTS access Surasak station). The ambiance at the SkyLounge on the 33-floor is sophisticated yet relaxed with a stunning panorama vista through the large windows. Gfour company a respected purveyor of fine wine & spirits and Eastin Grand Sathorn's Italian Luce restaurant is taking us on a wine discovery journey of Zenato wines from Valpolicella. Italian wine pairing with live culinary stations. A plethora of cheeses, polento, salami, risotto, tiramisu and much more. The wines: five distinctly different wines from

the Zenato winery, Lugana San Bernadetto 2014, Bardolino Chiaretto Rosé 2014, Ripassa Valpolicella 2012, Cormi Corvina Merlot 2010 and Amarone Della Valpolicella 2011. First sniff-sniffand sip-sip is the Lugana San Benedetto. Grape: 100% Trebbiano di Lugana. A full-bodied white wine yet fresh soft and gentle with a pleasant persistence in the aftertaste. Here excellently paired with Renga Con Polenta, Smoked herring fillet, grilled and marinated with bay leaves and served on grilled polenta sticks. And Moeche, Moeche is Venitian dialect for deep-fried soft-shelled crab. Next Bardolino Chiaretto. A dry chilled rosé, coral pink in color with a clean and fruity style. Fresh aromas of cherries and wild strawberries.

A match made in heaven with a selection of exquisite cheeses and salami from the Veneto region. One of the provinces is Verona known as the setting of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet." Wine, cheese and bread. A truly historical Roman triumvirate. Plus live jazz trio with a charming singer entertaining us with cool Cole Porter and smooth Norah Jones numbers. Another station over there. Tagliatelle All’anatra, pasta tossed with traditional Venetian duck ragout. Al dente and simply mouthwatering. In the glass Cormi Corvina Merlot. Nose: blackberry. Palate: Great minerality and freshness of corvina is balanced with the fatness and sweetness of merlot. A great Valpolicella red wine, full bodied with 13,5 alcohol content.

Ripassa Zenato is made by “repassing” Valpolicella wine over the pressed, withered grapes of Amarone. Wine critics have scored this as one of the top five Valpolicella Ripasso wines. What better match than a creamy Italian Risotto All’amarone. Traditional risotto prepared with Ripassa Valpolicella. In the glass a deep ruby color, on the nose it's fragrant with intense red fruit notes. Well-balanced, rich and with an extremely long finish. The Risotto cum Amarone wine, bone marrow and Monte Veronese cheese, served in a cheese wheel. Delizioso! Lips smacking, finger lickin' good. Before the evening's highlight the Amarone tasting/ pairing. Francois Aviloff, Zenato’s brand ambassador gives a presentation of the company and each unique Zenato Valpolicella wine. Drumroll... Then Luce's wine stewards uncork the Amarone Della Valpolicella bottles. “Ama-ro-ne” the most prestigious wine from the Valpolicella region in Veneto. As Zenato's winemaker Romano Dal Forno says “Power comes first, then balance, fruit and length, without power there’s no Amarone”. After a careful manual selection, the Corvina, Rondinella and Oseleta grapes used in the vinification are left

to rest in small boxes and then gently pressed to create a wine of unsurpassed quality with great complexity that gets better with age. Amarone Della Valpolicella is a commanding wine, wellstructured and distinguished by its full and refined flavour and its high alcohol level. The Italian DOC regulations stipulate a minimum alcohol content of 14 percent. This big bold Amarone accompanied by Cotechino with Lentils. Traditional Italian giant pork sausage steamed in red wine and served with soft lentils (enticchie) to match the muscular Amarone loaded with meaty, dark, black fruits, chewy raisins, mocha and balanced acidity. No wonder they call it “La Bomba”. The evening ends on a savory high sweet note. Mini tiramisu and selected macaroons plus Luce’s signature panna cotta. All invited guests, foodies and wine aficionados agree. It's been a glorious event and exceptional value at 1,490 baht net per person. Bravissimo! Eccellente! Eastin Grand Sathorn's Luce restaurant is highly recommended. Zenato Valpolicella wines are also available through GFour Wine & Spirit Company. In Vino Veritas

Mick & Di The Food Lovers

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com

Holiday Inn Pattaya

Mother Nature stages a free light show nightly and we are all beholden to watch, marvel and remember where it was that we witnessed one of nature’s phenomenons. Glasses in hand Mick and I toasted the sun recently from the enviable location of the Roof Top Bar at the Holiday Inn Pattaya. Pearched atop the new Executive Tower with its staggering views out over Pattaya’s west facing coastline it was a gorgeous prelude to our evening. Friday and Saturday nights DJ Henry plays an eclectic mix of sounds and between 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm in Happy Hour it’s time for that wonderful invention “buy-oneget-one-free”. Snap the sunset, raise your glasses and add this spectacular roof top bar to your special sunset gazing destinations. It was then time to move down to the hotel’s modern Italian terrace, aptly named Terrazzo. Situated on the ground floor adjacent to Beach Road, it’s big but manages to have a cosy feel at the same time with its happy holiday feel aided by favourite songs sung and performed by the resident acoustic guitar player. Lounge or table seating is there for the picking with a big open kitchen and full bar. The menu covers the full gamut of requisite plates for popularized eating and with a 50 percent discount in Happy Hour from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm it’s the ideal spot to linger a while after a day on the beach or an afternoon shopping. First to hit the table on our tasting menu was a very impressive polenta loaf, a big bodacious affair glazed to toothsome bronze, this corn meal loaf was baked with cheese, sesame seeds, spring onions and loads of butter and sat just waiting to be pulled apart to reveal its scrumptious centre. Next up was another item from the “small plates” section featuring tasties which can be nibbled and shared such as smashed avocado dip with corn chips, nachos or steak fries and seasoned crisp

fried calamari with lemon mayo. Back to our bruschetta, toasted bread had been cream cheese spread and topped with diced avocado and tomato (B.195) for a smooth flavour which made ideal friends with the Burrata and tomato salad placed on a bed of rocket and drizzled with a balsamic, virgin olive oil dressing. We were then presented with the Butcher & Pate Platter. Various salamis including Parma ham and Tuscan salami were artfully presented together with artisan cheeses, Sloanes pate and pickles and crusty bread. Every item was in perfect condition (top marks for the cheese being served at room temperature which is not always the case) and the rustic French pork liver country style pate wrapped in dry-cured bacon for extra flavour and was spot-on delicious. Pasta is a house speciality and features some lavish variations such as Rigatoni Mare e Monte (rigatoni pasta with lobster meat, eryngii muchrooms and creamy tomato sauce) or Duck Tagliatelle at B.400 presenting grilled smoked duck breast in a herbed garlic cream sauce with cherry tomatoes and finished with a dusting of

Parmesan cheese. The house Lasagna has a fine reputation as does the Carbonara and Spaghetti Vongole and is a much ordered plate at Terrazzo (B.400, 340 and 365 respectively). For burger lovers there are a quintet of 100 percent beef patties from which to choose, all accompanied by steak fries and the house slaw. We were served the Havana at B.395. A big toasted bun gave way to Gouda cheese, green pepper, caramelised onion, Portabello mushroom lavishly spread with a great burger sauce. The Butcher’s Specialities offers a whole ranch of premier Australian beef cuts. We tried the Wagyu Rump, 300 grams of Diamantina premium beef burnished to precision to melt in the mouth with tenderness. The big traditional pizza oven was hard at work all evening disgorging its Italian pies to the waiting audience. All the classics are here (from B.249) but as an added attraction you can make your very own bespoke pizza choosing a sauce and your 4 favourite toppings before watching it being popped into the oven and served at your table.

This is really a great menu, it also includes ten Thai favourites and a kids collection to keep the little’ns smiling. All prices are net so no surprises when it’s time to pay the bill. Don’t leave without trying the luscious desserts such as tartufo hazelnut, mango lime cheese cake or the waffles and ice cream plus the house Tiramisu is not to be missed for that sweetest of finales. THE WOODEN BOX

The “Clean Eating” trend seems to be everywhere lately. The soul of “eating clean” is consuming food the way nature delivered it plus eating seasonal and local produce and avoiding processed and refined foods. We can’t think of a better proponent of this style of eating than The Wooden Box at the tip of Theppraya Road adjacent to the Court House. Owned by

three young entrepreneurs from Bangkok, Nat, Lek and Aek with an enthusiastic Chef heading the kitchen from Kampanpot the good eating vibe is alive and very well at The Wooden Box. There are three steps to heaven (and healthy eating) at this vibrant young restaurant. Step 1 is to choose your hydroponic salad leaf from eight options including rocket, red coral, Cos and butterhead.

Step 2 is to choose three toppings from the list: pumpkin seeds, carrot, beetroot, sunflower sprouts, radish, boiled egg among others. Step 3 is to choose your dressing from fresh kiwi, wasabi, thousand island, Thai style spicy and many more. We chose Cos lettuce with toppings of beetroot, red pepper and onion dressed in a Japanese sesame dressing. It was just how we imagined it would taste, vibrant, full of flavour and cleanly delicious. Your own bespoke salad costs only B.77 but if you would like to add an extra topping there is an additional charge. For instance, grilled bacon, grilled pork, tuna, or chukka wakame, is B.40 with a grilled pepper steak coming in at B.50 but if you would like a 5-star premium topping such as smoked salmon, fresh crab meat, smoked duck breast, fried soft shell crab or the luxurious touch of lobster then obviously there is a higher premium topping charge. We chose to have the salad as our starter but there’s lots of other options. Tuna Quesadillas and ham and cheese spring blossom rolls are

very popular as are the butter fried shrimp and calamari. There’s also lots of juicy steaks, rib-eye, T-bone or grilled pork chops on offer including sausages, BBQ pork ribs or spinach stuffed chicken breast. The menu ends on a high note with five premium lobster dishes all priced at B.935 including Tom Yum lobster, deep fried with garlic, baked cheesy, stir fried with garlic and pepper and an innovative mixed fruit salad lobster. We tried the Chicken Taco (B.135) which is a big, robust affair full of flavour and packed to bursting. Soft, tender strips of chilli chicken is tossed in salad with vegetables and coated with ribbons of mayo all presented in a crisp taco and served board-style. Spicy, chilli hot and cool, we loved it. We also tried the Dory fish steak (B.175). The sleek steak was grilled with a deft hand and came with a side salad and French fries. Mick ordered the crab cakes (B.335) which arrived well displayed on a wooden board with an abundant fruity salad containing Kiwi fruit, strawberries , leaves, red cabbage and numerous diced fruit. The pink dressing worked well with all this abundance. We were drinking the very quaffable Cabernet Sauvignon at B.95 per glass or B.620 for the bottle. The menu here is huge. I haven’t even mentioned the all day breakfast yet. It’s an international selection featuring a German set of croissant, boiled egg and sausage or the Asian style with panned eggs and the ever-popular eggs Benedict with home made Hollandaise sauce for B.235. If just an omelet and toast is your thing, it’s here as is a healthy set and a full American. All sets are served with tea or coffee, juice and mixed fruit. Before closing we’d just like to mention the super healthy juices that are on offer. The Clorophyl Detox is the on-trend green juice packed with cleansing and purifying agents or

the Digest Improver and even the Always Young juiced from cucumber, apples, celery and ginger. Nothing is nicer than a fresh fruit shake for breakfast or a cup of their speciality coffees. There’s a good selection of local beers plus the premium Hitachio Nest craft beers which are produced by Kiuchi Brewery who have been brewing Japanese Sake since 1823. This pictorial menu is truly massive. Twenty pages of everything from hash browns to mushroom mania featuring stir fries or their signature Big Champignon Burger. Prices are kept admirably low and the presentation is a feast for the eyes. I really can’t list it all – you’ll just have to visit The Wooden Box and experience Nat, Lek and Aek’s culinary vision for yourself. The Wooden Box is situated on Theppraya Road next to the Court House and is open every day from 09.30 am to 10.00 pm. Tel: 097 126 5432

How to avoid varicose veins What can put you at risk for varicose veins—those unsightly blood vessels often seen on the legs of older women and men? For most, they are simply a cosmetic problem, but more advanced varicose veins can cause legs to ache or swell. In general, you are more at risk of the problem if your parents suffered from it. Also, your age and weight play a role; the older you are and the more you weigh, the higher your risk. Among women, hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy and menopause can increase the risk of developing varicose veins, as can birth control pills and other drugs containing estrogen and progesterone. (The good news is veins that enlarge during pregnancy tend to shrink back after giving birth.)

Also, you may increase your chances of developing varicose veins if you tend to cross your legs while sitting. To minimize your risk, get regular physical activity. It not only promotes healthy circulation, but can help to discourage weight gain and obesity

associated with increased risk of varicose veins. It’s also a good idea to avoid long periods of inactive standing or crossing your legs while sitting; elevate your legs whenever possible to help prevent the pooling of blood, which can exert undue pressure on the veins in your legs.

Worldwide, men have a life expectancy of nearly 65 years, as compared to a life expectancy of nearly 69 years for women. Avocados have the highest calories of any fruit at 167 calories per hundred grams, but it is healthy fat.

Fetid Feet Fixes

With more than a quarter of a million sweat glands in your feet (more than in any other part of the body, including the underarms) and considering that these glands release about a four liters of moisture per week, it's not surprising that smelly feet often are more offensive than BO. If you suffering from feet that are particularly odorous, it may be an inherited trait (excessive perspiration), or it may simply stem from common bacteria living in your shoes. Regardless of the source, you are not powerless to combat the problem. Here are some tips: Start by reducing the amount of caffeine and refined sugar that you consume (both can affect your metabolism and how your feet produce sweat). Air out your shoes by not wearing the same shoes two days in a row. This helps dehydrate and kill bacteria and cut down on the odor they can cause. If you notice that your feet are sweating during the day, change into dry socks. Use treated shoe inserts or deodorant crystals. Periodically wipe the insides of your shoes with a wet cloth, and then let them dry thoroughly.

Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers their dreams. Most people dream about every 90 minutes; the longest dreams (30-45 minutes) occur in the morning.

Muay Thai Elbows by Rory Coughlan

While it may be possible to be victourious in a fight using just one technique, a Muay Thai boxer who masters the use of each of thier eight weapons will definitely be able to face and outdo their opponent. Elbow strikes are very unique weapons that make Muay Thai different from other martial arts. Elbows in Muay Boran and Muay Thai can give very severe injuries to the opponent as they are used to attack when the opponent is in close quarters. The major targets for elbows are generally head facial areas including jaw, temple, neck and so on but never underestimate or think an elbow can not be used to strike another part or limb of the body. This all depends on the situation one might find them selfs in. The use of elbows leads your combat strategy to be effective and also deceiving to the untrained eye of the opponent. You can maneuver and direct an elbow in any direction to attack, being vertically and horizontally or diagonally but different types will give different impact effects to the attack. 1. Sok Ti-Slashing Elbow 2. Sok Tad-Horizontal Elbow 3. Sok Ngad -Uppercut Elbow 4. Sok Chieng -Diagonal Elbow 5. Sok Sab -Chopping Elbow 6. Sok Tong -Smash Downward Elbow 7. Sok Ku -Double Elbows 8. Sok Klab -Spinning Elbow 9. Kradot Sok -Mid-Air Elbow Strike There is also a distinct difference between a single elbow and a follow-up elbow. The single elbow is an elbow technique which is independent from any other move. A follow-up elbow on the other hand, is the second strike from the same arm, being a hook or straight punch first with an elbow follow-up. Such elbows, and most

other elbow strikes are used when the distance between fighters is too small and there is too little space to throw a hook at the opponent’s head. Elbows can also be utilized to great effect as blocks or defenses against for example spring knees, side body knees, body kicks or punches. Always remember if you are a close enough to throw the elbow so your opponent.

Work those thighs and butt Ladies, do you want to firm your thighs and butt? You can tighten your inner and outer thighs, as well as your fanny, by doing squats. Practice squats using a chair. First, sit all the way down in the chair and then stand back up. Next, don't sit all the way down, barely touching the chair's seat before standing back up. Once you’re comfortable with the movement, do it without the chair. Just keep your feet shoulder-width apart and your back straight. Bend your knees and lower your rear as if you were sitting down in a chair, keeping your knees over your ankles.

What better association than Wine, Dine & Art?

G Four Fine Wines & Spirits collaborated with About Eatery for a unique evening to promote Wine in Art. Over the years, G Four developed the concept of Wine in Art through personalized labels designed by selected artists. And, as part of Ciao Art Exhibition organized by G Four and Sathorn 11 Art Space, it was only natural to ask the Italian Artist Sergio Voci to join the adventure by designing exclusive labels for the occasion. Guests enjoyed a menu elaborated by Giulio Saverino, sommelier and owner of the restaurant, and Edoardo Bonavolta, Italian chef. To be paired with the delicate dishes, and Sergio’s art installed at About Eatery for the night, delicate wines were chosen. Indeed, guests had the possibility to discover or re-discover elegant wines during this dinner but also to try Kristall Thai spirit. From Spain with Pares Balta Cava to Sicily with Feudo Maccari and Pietradolce wines, guests finished the dinner with Carlo Hauner sweet white wine, which perfectly concluded the night. This dinner was also a nice opportunity to learn more about Sergio Voci himself. Born in Nigeria in 1975 to Italian parents, and travelled the Middle East throughout his childhood before settling in Italy, where he has found home, Sergio Voci was part of Ciao Art Exhibition in Sathorn 11 Art Space this last month. The complexity of the cultures he experienced appears in his work, shaping it dramatically. However, if there is one word that defines Sergio’s work, that is the drawing. Its design, its shapes, its objects, whether real or imagined, are the basis of his production. Thus, from a long friendship and the love of arts and fine wines, was born the perfect association between Sergio Voci and G Four Fine Wines & Spirits.

Bird’s Eye view of the Asian Property Market In an interview with Dot Property Co., Ltd., my good friend Chris Dietz provides some excellent insight on the growth of real estate markets in Asia. Chris is vice president of Global Operations, Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® (Leading RE), a growing network of independent residential brokerages spanning more than 60 countries. Here then, that interview: Dot Property (DP): Last year was a historic one for LeadingRE, what were some of the most notable achievements? Is there anything you are particularly proud of? Dietz: Yes, 2016 was another fantastic year for us. I think the most notable achievement was that our network generated over 30,000 leads, client introductions, and we managed to push our referral conversion rate of closed transactions from 43 percent to an industry leading 52 percent! Besides that, now having representation in 62 countries has marked another milestone for our organization, and we successfully introduced our new re-freshened brand in October during our Global Symposium in Amsterdam. And because one of our hallmarks is quality, we are very proud that we were recently ranked the #3 learning organization out of the top 125 by Training Magazine, reflecting our focus on continually raising the performance bar. DP: L o o k i n g a h e a d t o 2017, can you share some of LeadingRE’s plans for this year? Dietz: 2017 will also be the year of continuing globalization of our entire organization. At LeadingRE, we are committed to creating a truly global organization. We recognize

the fact that business is done very differently in many parts of the world. One of our slogans is ‘We’re Local, we’re Global.’ We believe that a global company is a local company…but with connections everywhere. We successfully apply different business models in different parts of the world and encourage our affiliates to share their best practices with the entire network using the products, tools and services we provide for them. Being global is also about the mindset of each staff member and affiliate, and we plan to strengthen that global mindset by providing even more training and education. Other plans include adding more quality real estate companies to the network, generating increased referral business and building our brand, especially in the APAC region. DP: Does the company have any goals in Asia this year? Can you offer a little insight as to what some of those goals are? Dietz: Yes, certainly we have plans for Asia in 2017. We will continue our branding campaign with Dot Property, as we understand the importance of a quality brand within the Asian cultures, even though we will always remain the global brand behind a successful local brand. With this, we hope to attract more quality real estate operations to the network and expand in further markets so our existing members have reliable partners to send their clients. To better service the region, we are considering hiring staff to work out of our Singapore office. We are also considering customizing a compelling value proposition for real estate project developers in the region to connect with us and our 128,000

agents worldwide on a global platform. LeadingRE rapidly expanded its footprint in 2016 and now has members in more than 60 countries. DP: Are there any Southeast Asian markets LeadingRE is targeting this year? Could we see further expansion into the region? Dietz: We are very interested in expanding our footprint in the Southeast Asian region. According to statistics of the ASEAN organization, Southeast Asia is the world’s growth region. Figures shown during a meeting in Bangkok last year were quite exciting. It is predicted that the middle class in Asia will overtake the US and European middle class in numbers by 2020 and will have almost twice as many middle-class people as Europe and the US combined! Can you imagine the buying power? By 2030 Indonesia will overtake Germany and Japan as big middle class spenders, closing in on China, India and the US. The Philippines had a bigger GDP growth rate than China in 2016. So yes, back to the question, Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as Vietnam and Thailand, are in our focus as we already see a lot of our business going towards these countries. It seems natural that we are looking to add quality companies from those countries to our global network of independent real estate firms. DP: Some of the hallmarks of the LeadingRE brand are its high standards and commitment to quality and service. What has the company done to ensure these are not sacrificed as the company continues its impressive growth?

Dietz: At LeadingRE, we’ve always thought about expansion and growth in terms of the individuals involved. We go where we not only find the best of the best independent brands and real estate operations, but also where we find people who are the right fit for the LeadingRE brand and our affiliates. These people have the same values, believe in the culture we’ve created for so many years, and share our philosophy of quality, connections and independence! DP: Is there anything else you wish to share with readers about LeadingRE or the company’s aims moving forward? Dietz: I often realize that it is not easy to understand our business model from an outsider’s perspective. LeadingRE is a global

While our members/ affiliates enjoy the freedom and flexibility of being independent, we offer products, tools and services only a global organization can provide. A planned high-speed rail link between Pattaya and Bangkok will further reduce travel time to the development,” Chris Delaney added. Owned by Thai property company Sunplay Asia Co., Ltd, The Heights Condominiums will be titled under Thailand’s

MARITAL PROPERTY What is marital property? Marital Property or Sin Somros are all properties and financial assets acquired by a couple during their marriage, ordinarily used by them and their children while they are living together for shelter or transportation, or for household, educational, recreational or social purposes. Anything that belonged to one spouse before the marriage is non-marital property or Sin Suan Tua. Is marital property always divided equally? The concern on property division does not usually arise during the marriage, but when a couple decides to separate. Upon divorce, the Sin Somros shall be divided equally between spouses. Are gifts that my spouse gave me during our marriage considered as marital property? Any property acquired by either spouse during marriage through a will or gift is considered as a personal property or Sin Suan Tua. What is considered non-marital property (Sin Suan Tua)? Each spouse is the manager of his or her own Sin Suan Tua. It consists of: 1. property belonging to either spouse before marriage; 2. property for personal use, dress or ornament suitable for station in life, or tools necessary for carrying on the profession of either spouse; 3. property acquired by either spouse during marriage through a will or gift; 4. Khongman. What is considered to be marital property (Sin Somros)? Sin Somros consists of: 1. property acquired during marriage; 2. property acquired by either spouse during marriage through a will of gift made in writing if it is declared by such will or document of gift to be Sin Somros; 3. fruits of Sin Suan Tua. In managing the Sin Somros in the following cases, the husband and wife have to be joint manager, or one spouse has to obtain consent from the other: 1. Selling, exchanging, sale with the right of redemption, letting out property on hire-purchase, mortgaging, releasing mortgage to mortgagor or transferring the right of mortgage on immovable property or on mortgageable movable property. 2. Creating or distinguishing the whole or a part of the servitude, right of inhabitation, right of superficies, usufruct or charge on immovable property.

3. Letting immovable property for more than three years. 4. Lending money 5. Making a gift unless it is a gift for charitable, social or moral purposes and is suitable to the family condition. 6. Making a compromise. 7. Submitting a dispute to arbitration. 8. Putting up the property as guarantee or security with a competent official or the Court. The management of the Sin Somros in any case other than those mentioned above can be made only by one spouse without having to obtain consent from the other. In case either spouse is the sole manager of the Sin Somros, if the manager is going to commit or is committing any act in the management of the Sin Somros which would appear to result in undue loss, the other spouse may apply to the Court for an order forbidding commission of such act. If either spouse who is the manager of Sin Somros: 1. causes undue loss to it; 2. fails to support the other spouse; 3. becomes insolvent or incurs debts to an amount exceeding one half of the Sin Somros; 4. hinders the management of Sin Somros by the other spouse without reasonable ground; 5. is found to have circumstances that will ruin the Sin Somros; the other spouse may apply to the Court for an order authorizing him or her to be the sole manager or dividing the Sin Somros. What about our debts? Where either spouse is personally liable to perform an obligation incurred before or during marriage, such performance shall be first made out of his or her Sin Suan Tua; if the obligation is not performed in full, it shall be satisfied out of his or her portion of the Sin Somros. Where both spouses are common debtors, the performance shall be made out of the Sin Somros and the Sin Suan Tua of both spouses. Debts that both spouses are jointly liable to perform, shall include the following debts incurred by either spouse during marriage: 1. debts incurred in connection with management of household affairs and providing for the necessaries of the family, or maintenance, medical expenses of the household and for proper education of the children; 2. debts incurred in connection with the Sin Somros; 3. debts incurred in connection with a business carried on by the spouses in common; 4. debts incurred by either spouse only for his or her own benefit but ratified by the other. If either spouse is adjudged bankrupt, the Sin Somros is divided by operation of law as from the date of adjudication.

Andre Brulhart, general manager of Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya, announced that Joachim Felber has been appointed to the position of executive chef, with immediate effect. Joachim, a Swiss national, has a Diploma of Culinary Arts from Switzerland and is a chef with more than 30 years experience. Kempinski opens first modern five-star luxury hotel in Cuba

Kempinski will open its first hotel in Cuba in the second quarter of this year. The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana features 246 rooms and suites and is located within the historic Manzana de Gómez building in the heart of Old Havana - a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kempinski Hotels has just signed a management contract with the Grupo de Turismo Gaviota SA. "We are very pleased to be opening this outstanding hotel in the spring," says Markus Semer, chairman of the management board and CEO of Kempinski Hotels. "The opening is a continuation of our pioneering spirit as the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana will be Cuba’s first modern luxury fivestar hotel. And its location within a famous historic building currently makes it the most exclusive hotel project in Old Havana.” “For us, it is important to gain new partners who are internationally renowned, to manage our hotels, for this reason Kempinski was selected to take care of our new hotel in Havana,”adds Carlos M. Latuff, executive president Grupo de Turismo Gaviota SA.“With

its impeccable 120-year history, European-style luxury and extraordinary quality, Europe's oldest luxury hotel group Kempinski is a perfect fit with the Manzana de Gómez. Constructed at the beginning of the 20th century, as Cuba’s first European-style shopping arcade, it is an iconic building in an important historical area. Together with Kempinski we will make this jewel the city’s leading luxury hotel,” he continues. Even before it has opened, the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana is causing much excitement –not only in Cuba. Guests can choose from 246 luxury rooms and suites, ranging in size from 40 to the stunning presidential suite’s 150 square metres – all with ceilings of four to five metres. The rooftop terrace and swimming pool, with views over the old town, are just one of the many highlights. There will be a spa managed by Resense, which offers guests more than 1,000 square metres of pure relaxation, together with a choice of three restaurants, a lobby bar, cigar lounge, and a business centre makes sure guests will have everything they need for a truly memorable stay.

As one of the most recognised faces in the world, Serena Williams has been World Number One six times and holds 38 major titles – more than any other tennis player, male or female. She is currently chasing her 23rd Grand Slam singles title which would put her one Grand Slam title away from Margaret Court with the most singles titles ever held. Serena was the highest-paid female athlete of 2016, has graced the cover of Vogue and was Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year in 2015, so it is fair to say she is much more than a great tennis player – she is a real icon and a symbol of empowerment around the world. AccorHotels is also Official Partner of the Australian Open, providing concierge and information services for fans and players, and accommodation packages for fans attending the tennis. The Australian Open is the largest annual sporting event in the southern hemisphere and provides a huge boost to tourism in Australia, with last year’s event adding 278.1 million dollars to the Victorian economy. AccorHotels previously offered members of its Le Club AccorHotels loyalty program an exclusive opportunity to meet Serena Williams at the So Sofitel Singapore and Sofitel Melbourne on Collins where she posed for photos with fans.

Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts announces rebranding of a luxury villa resort in Hua Hin Swiss hotel management company Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has announced that it will rebrand and manage a luxury villa and suite resort in Hua Hin, Thailand to be named the Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin. In operation since 2010, the existing Asara Villa and Suite Resort, Hua Hin comprising a 96-key resort is owned by Ocean Property and boasts 54 pool villas and 42 suites designed to offer discerning leisure travellers and families a relaxing holiday in Thailand’s premier beach destination.

Scheduled to relaunch with Mövenpick branding in November 2017, the full service resort will also feature exceptional food and beverage options, an indulgent spa with eight treatment rooms, a fully equipped Kids Club, exclusive meeting room facilities, a library, multiple swimming pools and extensive lush tropical landscaping. Thailand’s hotel investment activity remained robust in 2016 with more than 10 hotels and hospitality assets sold in Bangkok and major provincial destinations. Of this, five assets were brokered by JLL on behalf of the sellers. However, investment volume fell 15 percent from 2015 to 9.6 billion baht due to the lack of large assets being offered to the market. 2017 will see a big jump in investment volume as the 10.8-billion baht sale of Swissotel Nai Lert Park is scheduled for conclusion this year, according JLL’s Hotels & Hospitality Group. Mike Batchelor, managing director of Investment Sales Asia, JLL’s Hotels and Hospitality Group, says “Investment appetite by both local and foreign investors in Thailand’s hospitality market has showed no signs of subsiding as these investors have remained upbeat on long-term fundamentals in this ever-resilient market.” Data from the Tourism Authority of Thailand suggests that the growth of inbound visitors into Thailand has been consistent with a 10-year compound annual growth rate of 8.9 percent. Total international visitor arrivals breached the 30 million mark for the first time in 2016 and are expected to reach 35 million in 2017 despite the crackdown on zero-dollar tours that has impacted the number of arrivals from China since the latter part of 2016.

and managed as serviced apartments by Ascott. Other transactions were spread across major tourism destinations including Pattaya, Phuket, Phang Nga, Koh Samui, Hua Hin and Chiang Rai plus additional transactions in the gateway city of Nakhon Ratchasima and the industrial town of Sri Racha.

Bangkok led the pack in 2016 Bangkok was the star performer in Thailand with hospitality transactions accounting for around 50 percent of the total volume in 2016. Some of the key deals recorded over the year across the city include the sales of Eight Thonglor (including the former Pan Pacific Residences, since rebranded as Akyra Thonglor), Liberty Garden Hotel and Park 24 Condominium in Sukhumvit which will be rebranded

Both domestic and regional investors were active buyers While most of the hotel deals last year were transacted by Thai investors, institutional investors from Hong Kong and Singapore were also active purchasers, accounting for around 45 percent of the total transaction volume. “Interest from both domestic and regional investors were strong in 2016, a trend that is expected to continue into 2017,” says Batchelor. “More Asian corporates are looking to place large capital reserves into alternative investment classes in some of Thailand’s real estate sectors that enjoy healthy trading performance and returns. Buoyed by strong long-term growth prospects for the country’s tourism industry, some of these corporates have showed keen interest in the hospitality sector, as evidenced from strong levels of bids for some of sought-after hotel assets currently offered for sale in Thailand,” he adds.

town charm, Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin is set to add an exceptional new luxury accommodation choice for visitors. Domestic and international guests will enjoy memorable holidays, tailored to all ages and interests, with an added a touch of private luxury and extraordinary service.” Centrally located in the famous Thai beachside town, which is an easy 3-hour drive from Bangkok, Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin is less than one kilometre from Hua Hin Airport and just a 5-minute drive from the town centre and its popular shopping and nightlife options. Guests can enjoy the best of the beach

while still taking advantage of city attractions in this mainland getaway, a combination that has made it a favorite weekend retreat. “We’re delighted to add another beachside property to our rapidly expanding portfolio” added Langdon, "especially in such an established location and with such reputable owners. "Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin will join our existing three exceptional Mövenpick resort properties in Thailand, which include Mövenpick Siam Hotel Pattaya, the stylish Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket and the popular Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket.”

Youth Focus

Staying safe online by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona IB students from Garden International School (GIS) helped younger pupils learn about online safety as part of their lessons. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students, who are studying Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS), came up with three mornings of activities for years 7 to 9. These were part of the Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) lessons. The activities involved looking at how to stay safe on social media, what to be aware of and how to ensure students took steps to remain safe when online. Feedback from the years 7 to 9 students was very positive. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

Neuroscience in the Classroom by Rob Cable

Dance and dumplings as GIS marks Chinese New Year by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona

Garden International School celebrated Chinese New Year with songs, dance and dumplings. The Languages' Department organised a special evening of Chinese activities, which featured red lanterns strung around the school leading up to the Main Hall on January 26. The show, hosted by IB students, featured a traditional Chinese fan dance, songs from the Thai teachers and even a special dance from other GIS teachers. In the interval, Chinese

dumplings and other snacks were available. To mark the Year of the Rooster, students and staff wore red. Thanks to Indorama, which sponsored this event.

The application of educational neuroscience in schools has faced a lot of criticism with many believing that there is a sufficient lack of concrete evidence to support its effectiveness and validity in the classroom. Despite this, the interest that surrounds this emerging topic is continually growing and this is encouraging to gain a clearer understanding of the correlation between children’s education and brain development. Although neuro-myths have distorted public perception and casted some doubts, many agree that advances in neuroscience and our understanding of the brain could have a profound impact on how we teach young children to enhance their learning. The fundamentals of educational neuroscience are at a relatively advanced stage. We are now able to use sophisticated scanners to capture images inside the brain which can be directly related to the classroom. This has been particularly useful when understanding and dealing with ‘problem’ children with regards to social and emotional development, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism and dyslexia. The hope for educational neuroscience is that we will be able to set biological

markers to recognise learning difficulties in children and assist the developmental process of the brain from a much earlier age. Neuroscience has improved our knowledge of the reading and mathematical processes in the brain. Research has shown a connection between phonological awareness (the patterns of speech and sound) and reading ability. Children who have developed a solid foundation in phonics

tend to be better readers in comparison to children who have not established such skills. In mathematics neuroscience has helped to identify areas of the brain which specifically deal with numerical processing and mental arithmetic. Some children’s brains develop abnormally or slower than others. Therefore, neuroscientists recommend specialised interventions for

children who find mathematics challenging, rather than subjecting every child to standardised interventions, which could be detrimental to some children’s academic development. Neuroscientists contend that uncertain reward can be far more motivating than certain reward because humans have an attraction to challenges with equal odds. It is for this reason that educational games are extremely motivating for young learners because they are not focused on reward consistency. Furthermore, neuroscience argues that the brain is a complex, interactive and interconnecting system that uses multiple senses to absorb, interpret and process information s i m u l t a n e o u s l y. A student may have a preferred learning style – such as visual or auditory – however research shows that this is dictated by the development of the brain and that it is unethical to label a child a ‘kinaesthetic learner’. Instead, neuroscientists suggest that the more difficult a task is the greater the chance we have of memorising it.Thus, inadequate or incompetent learning styles should be practised to strengthen them. There is currently a debate among neuroscientists about how the brain functions; whether we use certain parts of the brain for specific types of learning or whether learning occurs throughout the whole brain. Thus, it is important that neuroscientists do not overstate their findings and instead take time to provide conclusive evidence for educators to successfully implement neuroscience into their classrooms. Rob Cable is a primary year 3/1 classroom teacher at the Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That The 1952 movie Ivanhoe beats the novel It’s never easy adapting a book to film. Sir Walter Scott’s novel Ivanhoe has literally dozens of characters whilst the main character is offstage or wounded for the greater part of the book. So the MGM director Richard Thorpe and writers Noel Langley and Aeneas Mackenzie succeeded in making a highly entertaining movie, but it has little to do with Scott. The made-in-England movie traces the attempts by Sir Wilfrid of Ivanhoe (Robert

Taylor) to bring back king Richard the Lionheart from his captivity in Austria, winning him the enmity of Prince John, who covets his brother’s English throne, and the prince’s Norman knights who dance attendance in self-interest. En route, Ivanhoe revives his long standing love affair with Rowena (Joan Fontaine) and is fancied by Rebecca (Elizabeth Taylor). There are many plot changes. In the film, Ivanhoe is a much more active hero than the one in Scott’s novel and quickly reveals himself to his Saxon father Cedric and to Rowena. Also Ivanhoe recovers from his jousting wound in the movie much more rapidly than in the book. In the film Ivanhoe openly rides to Torquilstone castle to give himself up to the Normans if they will release his father and other hostages. But in the book it’s Wamba the Fool who performs this role disguised as a priest. Needing to give Ivanhoe

more to do, the movie’s scriptwriters borrow from other medieval legends. The film opens with Ivanhoe as a wandering minstrel who discovers that king Richard is held captive by Leopold of Austria. Thus Ivanhoe takes over the legendary role of Blondel. This Blondel element leads to a plot common to many Robin Hood films, but only on the fringes of Sir Walter Scott’s original tale – King Richard’s ransom. To raise the money for the ransom, Ivanhoe in the movie asks Isaac of York, the patriarch of the Jews, to find 150,000 marks of silver. This subplot is not present in the same form in the novel. Film reviewers in the early 1950s were quick to notice that the film teaches a serious lesson in religious tolerance – that the

Jews will ransom Richard who in turn will not oppress them any more – which is not at all customary in spectacle movies. Isaac is played by Felix Aymler in the movie and is a good deal less selfish than the same character in the book. Elizabeth Taylor’s Rebecca has also been softened for the movie. But her role in the book is broadly retained. She helps Ivanhoe pay for his armour and refuses to submit to the thuggish advances of Sir Brian de BoisGuilbert played by George Sanders. Finlay Currie and Emlyn Williams respectively play Cedric, Ivanhoe’s father, and Wamba in a charmingly broad and comic perspective. Robert Taylor isn’t the natural swashbuckler that was Errol Flynn in his heyday. But he manages to convey his

authority as King Richard’s envoy well and shows good spirit in the swordfighting scenes at Torquilstone castle. Taylor dresses in a green and brown costume very similar to Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood’s outfit. As for Robin Hood, he plays a very minor part in the movie, restricted largely to warning the Normans at Torquilstone that they face siege and attack if they don’t release their hostages forthwith. The most action-packed sequence is without doubt the siege of the castle. The many volleys of Saxon arrows is a

spectacular moment, an idea dropped from the Flynn movie owing to budgetary constraints. It all looks rather cheesy today in that the arrows are not shown penetrating people with the lethal realism which would be shown today. But it is clear that the siege inspired the Helm’s Deep sequences in the 2002 film Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Incidentally, the set of the castle at Boreham Wood was used again in the 1955 Flynn movie The Dark Avenger. The 1953 Ivanhoe is a brightly coloured romp, filled with pageantry and huge numbers of extras. The winding narrative is certainly gone, but what stands in its place is enjoyable. Maybe Ivanhoe doesn’t stand up to the best of the swashbucklers, but it provides some good entertainment, these days more likely on DVD than at the cinema.

10 Women Body Parts That Men Love (It’s Not What You Think) If you’ve ever wondered exactly what body parts of a woman are the most appealing to men, we’ve got it down to a science!

6. Skin Smooth, soft skin is so feminine and wonderful to the touch. In those intimate moments, men love the feel of a woman’s skin. Beautiful skin also radiates a healthy glow. 7. Legs

Emphasizing your femininity by paying attention to the fine details (which you’ll learn about in this article) plays big a role in your overall appearance and splendid charm. 1. Your Smile No t o n l y i s a s m i l e worth a million words, it bestows warmth and an air of welcoming. Men love a beautiful smile, as it not only brightens up your entire face, but it also alleviates any awkward intimidation a man might feel. Scowling or frowning will get you a big zero, no matter how beautiful you might be. 2. Lips Overall, men love nice full lips on a woman. Kissing someone with full lips seems to make a difference with some men and seems to offer an intimate nature. Having said that however, some men claimed it is the tongue that made the overall difference. 3. Breasts Let’s face it, breasts were, are and always will be a major attraction with men. They like to stare, touch, put them in their mouths and use them as pillows. Size truly doesn’t matter; just the fact that you have them drives men nuts! 4. Butt Guys love a nice-looking butt, no matter what… Whether it is in those tight fitting jeans or in shorts. So exercise that booty! Men like a nice firm butt over a flabby one!

Whether you have long legs or short legs, men love wellproportioned, sexy legs. Not necessarily muscular, just nicely toned and tanned. 8. Hips Nicely-shaped hips are a big turn-on for men as well. Some of the preferences are pear-shaped, rounded and heart-shaped, especially in those low-rise jeans! 9. Back & Stomach

Aquarius (Jan 23-Feb22) Let

 the past be your guide to the future. For example, if you have been given a police breathe test in the past three months, the law of averages means you will be OK for the remainder of this year. Please enjoy yourself in your own way. Don’t jump into something too quickly this coming Saturday, particularly if it’s an empty swimming pool. Pisces (Feb 23-Mar22) You can size up your financial situation on Tuesday or Wednesday and make appropriate plans for the next few weeks. Unfortunately, this will mean avoiding all restaurants, giving pubs a wide berth and pretending you have forgotten your partner’s birthday. Optimistically, it will still be possible for you to do something nice on Saturday evenings, but the downside could well be a bloody nose or a black eye. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) You may be confused today and tomorrow by someone who is sending you mixed signals. For example you may get a nod and a wink from someone you fancy only to discover that you are expected to pay upwards of 1,000 baht for the privilege. Don’t get angry with someone trying to stop you making a mistake: if a policeman blows his whistle when you are turning left, don’t tell him to sod off. Taurus (Apr23May22) Concentrate on entertainment that won’t break your budget. In practice this means avoiding places where other people gather and watching old DVDs at home you have seen many times before. Try to think ahead and avoid being too impulsive. There is little point in playing cards for money if you end up in the police station cells. Gemini (May23-June22) Don’t follow the crowd or get involved in something that you shouldn’t just because you don’t want to feel left out. The danger is you will just look stupid: there is no point whatsoever in joining the local bikers’ club if you never break the speed limit. There are no changes heralded in your sex life, so there’s absolutely no point in chatting up people in bars or pacing the Walking Street. Cancer (June23-July22) A sudden change at home on Thursday could cause you to change horses in midstream. Indeed, if a fire breaks out in your bedroom you may have to postpone the lie-in that you promised yourself. Before you jump in and make a commitment try to think out the consequences. Ringing the bell in your local pub can be very expensive indeed if the place is crowded.

A flat stomach, firm back, beautiful skin and nicely shaped hips are a huge draw in those low-rise jeans. A firm back is truly sexy in those backless dresses. Although we cannot see our backs, don’t kid yourself; a firm well-toned back is a big turn-on. 10. Eyes

5. Hair Men love beautiful, shiny hair as well. And they do seem to prefer long hair over short hair, because of the way it sways and how they can run their hands through it.

Beautiful eyes are enchanting and mesmerizing. The color, shape and size play a vital role in a man’s taste. Eyes are the most expressive part of our bodies and can convey any number of messages. (July23-Aug22) People  Leo are beginning to suspect you

have a guilty secret which is gluttony. From now on, do not buy two trencherman English breakfasts in the same restaurant, or ask them to put the second one in a bag to take home to your friend. This will make the waitress less suspicious. Your habits are beginning to annoy people. It’s a bad idea to buy up all the chocolate digestives in the supermarket before anyone else has a chance. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) You would be wise to be more suspicious of the people around you. For example if you live in a high-rise condo and the wife suggests you get drunk on the balcony, suspect the worst especially if she hangs her coat over the CCTV. Try to limit your daily contact with thieves, prostitutes and confidence tricksters as they do not have your best interests at heart. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Don’t try to twist anybody’s arm as it may rebound on you, especially if it is an artificial limb. Problems with authority figures will be difficult to deal with on Friday especially if the contact is with a judge or an undertaker. Some friends suspect your personal hygiene is lacking, so have a shower once a week whether you need one or not. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) Don’t believe everything you hear from people, especially if it’s said by somebody trying to get you to change your mind. An example would be talking to somebody in a nightclub who says they are not interested in cash. You are going on a journey on Saturday morning but this may not be as exciting as it sounds. You could have a dentist’s appointment or a sad farewell at the crematorium. Sagittarius (Nov23Dec22) There is potential for a tragedy on Wednesday this week. If you are over 60 it may be best to avoid hazardous sports such as parasailing or bungee-jumping. You may feel anger welling up inside you and you may yearn for a really hot argument with someone to make you feel superior. However, do not choose a jet ski operator as foreigners rarely come out on top with them. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan 22) Look ahead and don’t dwell on the past. If your last five marriages have ended in disaster, just keep confident and remember Henry the Eighth. There is some connection between you and the full moon which is expected very soon. Try to spend the night behind bars as it could mean you are turning into a werewolf. Keep an eye open for body hair.

Bunker boys golf Flight Winners

Silky Oaks, Rainbow The lure of a beautiful course, seldom played, and rainbow, a format also seldom played was insufficient to lure the Bunker Boys out to play the first game of a new week. A very disappointing 13 were rewarded with a course in pristine condition in a beautiful location, and ideal weather conditions. Greens were slower than we had become accustomed to in recent weeks, with many players puts failing to reach the hole. The challenge of selecting the most appropriate tee on each hole added to the intrigue of this format. Some holes with a long carry over water made tee selection easy, however, other holes proved more difficult than one might expect, in particular, a short 80-yard par three proved to be too much for several players who failed to register a point on this hole.

Near Pins: Raleigh Gosney, Colin Greig, Keith Norman Bangpra Stableford (white tees) A better turnout today for this regular venue on our calendar. The course was in its usual good condition with the first nine greens closely mowed and running fast and true and the back nine just top dressed and a lot slower. Something that does not happen too often was a tie for a near pin, and despite using the flagstick to try and separate the two contenders eventually it was decided to share the honors. Les Burns was on form today and put together a fine round of 36 points despite a rules query which was decided in his favor. P.J. Redmond lost the count out for third place to Neil Carter by one point on the back nine. Back at M Club

Les Burns Michael Brett Golfer of the Month Overall scoring was much improved over recent outings with Geoff Parker leading the way with a well compiled 36 points, except for a bit of brain fade late in the round Geoff could easily have exceeded 40 points. One point back went to Michael Brett in second place with Colin Greig on 33 points in third. Golfer of the Month, which had been a see-saw battle for much of the month, was only decided on the closing holes with Colin Greig going for three in a row being edged out by the eventual first-time winner Michael Brett. It is to be hoped that more of the Bunker Boys will rediscover their spirit of adventure for different courses and golf formats in the future. The course was playing very long after an overnight shower and only Bob Cowell managed to get on a single short hole thus pocketing the spoils. Neil Griffen had his putting shoes on today and never missed a putt of under ten feet beating Eddie Kelly by a single shot. Trevor Priestly came in third four strokes back. Steve gets to the top of mountain first by Peter Grey Mountain Shadow On a perfect morning in Pattaya, two buses and three cars gathered to make the journey that was required to get to The Mountain. We once again tackled this course from the Blue tees, there was plenty of run that suited many but it was the greens that sorted out most. Weather certainly suited this game and it warmed up as the day got longer. I guess that’s why we play in the mornings as opposed to the PM. We welcomed back Alan Sanders, Martin Todd, Drew McGaw and welcomed new comers Greg Berry and Wayne Green. With welcomes there are farewells, we said goodbye to Vero Morgan and Bryce Buckley. We wish you both safe travels, see you again soon. With 25 golfers we went to two divisions A-flight as 0 to 17 and B-flight was 18+. A-flight saw Steve Younger take out first spot 4 points ahead of his closest rivals Dave Mew and Tony Berry (who were separated by our count back system). B-flight saw our Italian Tenor Tizano Dal Pastro take first spot by the lowest of margins with Vero Morgan and Glenn Smith, also being separated by the count back system.

Match play at the Players Lounge

by Nigel Cannon

Pattaya Country Club Following some match play between some bars recently, Paul Hack, golf organiser of the Players’ Lounge, arranged a different match play event for TPL golfers. English and Scots v Rest of the World -TPLpartners captained the teams. Captain for ROW was the popular caddy Kyle Roadley AKA Roachy and Mickey Beresford Captained the Brits. The format was not quite the usual match play as we all know. On this day – there were five groups each four ball had pairs from each team so after 9 holes you played the other player. We had two ladies Noo and Eng playing, and ladies will always be welcome at future TPL events. This seemed popular with the players and this format will be used in future. It was a fine day and the course satisfactory and all enjoyed the match, played in true friendly fashion with a number of new

Hack Paul, Mickey and Roachy friendships made. It was back to the Players’ Lounge after for eats (delicious Chinese menu) and a few cool ones served by the efficient and friendly staff, to await the formal announcement. The winners getting free drinks all night! Paul thanked all who took part and announced the result. A tie! 9 each! All thought it a

fair ending to a great day. There were two near pins (drink vouchers) won by Ian Pickle and Tim Knight, with a special mention of Sugar Robertson who was a foot from the pin on the difficult 16th. Andy gets handy! Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees First of all, congratulations to Her Majesty for her Sapphire Anniversary and 65 years on the throne, the longest reign in our history. Just for the information of all, we have a four-day golf schedule over the high season and play every weekday except Wednesday, so sign up for Monday, Tuesday as well as Thursday and Friday for some great golf in Pattaya. We leave early so expect a departure time of around 8:15 am from the club. Lots of winners of Capt. Phil’s handsome man vouchers today as six blokes squeezed

onto a very crowded podium. At the end of the day, it was Andy Leach who stood on top with Jack Grindvold to share first place honours. The course has had some irrigation issues with broken sprinkler heads around the greens causing very wet conditions on the fringe. They have got that sorted out now and all is good and dry so today’s play was very good for all. Results: T-1st – Andy Leach (9) 39 points T-1st – Jack Grindvold (5) 39 points 3rd – Masao Ishikawa (18)

38 points T-4th – Peter LeNoury (12) 36 points T-4th – Dave Ferris (20) 36 points T-4th – Mark Wood (9) 36 points Crystal Bay – Stableford – Yellow Tees Why don’t they spend a bit of the money we give them for green fees to clean up this run down clubhouse? OK, I get it that there is a budget for everything and the golf course is the most important, but the lockers and showers have become some of the shabbiest in the area. C’mon guys, time to get your act together here! Course condition was rated good, but this time of year it should be great. Weather was a bit windy and that helped to keep the heat down. It was all Andy once again as Mr. Leach capitalized on his handicap to claim top spot. He knows his days are numbered but that is the situation of any handicapping system at times, as there can be a period when your scoring is not equating to your talent. There is no sand

in Andy’s bags! That said, the aforementioned Mr. Leach had an amazing round of golf that day! Two eagles were recorded on the scorecard, one from B8 and one from C9 to add up to a great round of golf for Andy. When things are going well yagotta go with the flow! To top it off, Andy got the Caddy Smile near pin as well! Results: 1st – Andy Leach (9) 41 points T-2nd– Blake Hanna (17) 40 points T-2 nd–Kenny Aihara (6) 40 points T- 4th– Zed Belogavec (19) 38 points T- 4th– Bryan Carroll (20) 38 points Greenwood A & B – Stableford – WhiteTees We were here just seven days ago but that did not stop the lads from filling the sign-up sheet and make for a great comp on the day. This is such a lovely track you don’t mind the extra 15 minutes’ drive. Peter Thomas was last month’s medal winner and he is on a roll. If it weren’t for our regular Kenny Aihara, Peter may well have waltzed off all alone for the victory!

Ben Denham should have his name up here much more often but his recovery from that shoulder injury is taking longer than expected. Hopefully his near pin today is a step forward to that goal. Results: T - 1st –Peter Thomas (19) 39 points T - 1st– Kenny Aihara (6) 39 points 3rd – Blake Hanna (18) 37 points T -4th – Andy Leach (10) 36 points T -4th – Steve Gamble (14) 36 points Navy Plutaluang – Stableford – WhiteTees A very nice track in very mediocre condition is how we usually describe the Royal Thai Navy golf course. It is good value for money and about 35 minutes from downtown Pattaya, Soi LK Metro. There are four nine-hole tracks here at Navy and some have big elevation changes in a beautiful hillside setting. The name up top is no mistake, it is Andy Leach once again and Mr. Leach will be happy to find his tally for the week at three wins out of four! For now, Andy is in his

winning ways again and his 41 today sends a clear signal of his skills. Kris K is back in town for the Mulberry Ryder Cup and his 40 today shows he is ready for action. Canadian Jeff Hanack is another Ryder teammate and wins the Caddy Smile near pin. Results: 1st – Andy Leach (9) 41 points T-2nd – Kris Kritsanajoothra (10) 40 points T-2nd – Louis Ventimiglia (23) 40 points Thanks for joining us this week and keep it in the fairway! Crystal Bay A good size group of 21 golfers headed out to Crystal Bay to tackle the B and C courses. Conditions were quite good, with the breeze slightly rising for the second nine. White Tees were decided for the day which made scoring that little bit tougher, so maybe any scores in the 30’s maybe competitive. Greetings were handed out to Gerry Arthur, Hugh Knox, Dennis Steele, Bryce Buckley, Gary Jones, Craig Duncan and JC Lhoste. JC and Hugh unfortunately fare welling us as well. Two divisions were required and the A grade players were wondering whether The Viper (Mark Stapleton) was in fact in their division as his Crystal Bay form is electric. It wasn’t to be the Viper’s day, although he was happy enough with his second placing, via a countback with 35 points. Victory in fact went to Hugh Knox with a solid 37 points. If memory serves me correctly I seem to think Hugh won his last game that he played with the Growling Swan in 2016, during a brief visit. He is becoming a “Hit & Run” specialist. Third spot was filled by Alex Field with a very respectable 35 points B division was taken out by Andy Zwart, who overcame an episode in a bunker to card 32 points, which was somewhat surprising to take out first place. 2nd spot was filled by newcomer Bryce Buckley who was most lucky to play with three club veterans, Young, Stapleton and Allen. They helped him to 31 points or was it dragged him down to 31 points?

Jayson Schembri snuck into 3rd spot with a moderate 30 points. He had basically given up running a place with only 13 points after 11 holes, but managed a few good holes on the back nine to make his card look a little respectable. Results: A Grade (0-18): 1st - Hugh Knox (15) 37 points 2nd - Mark Stapleton (18) 35 points C/B 3rd - Alex Field(16) 35 points B Grade (19-36): 1st - Andy Zwart (25) 32 points 2nd - Byrce Buckley (19) 31 points 3rd - Jayson Schembri (22) 30 points NTP’s B4 - Hugh Knox B6 - Denis Steele C4 - Jayson Schembri C7 - Glenn Smith Longest Putt’s B9 - MashiKaneta C9 - Denis Steele

Back at the Growling Swan, we enjoyed a sweet and sour chicken meal which disappeared rapidly. Alex Field let D-For off his chain to collect donations, the Swan’s players and punters are a very generous bunch and keep giving to D-For. All are thanked for

their continued contributions to assist the needy children of Pattaya. For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage women to play. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086. Bowls The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Sundays at 10 am for open grass bowling at The Retreat. The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is less than 400 baht so great value for a day out.

You & Your Pets Cats and dogs R us! Have you ever given any thought to how cats think? We see evidence of their thoughts in their behavior— playful, gloomy, whiney—but what is the thought process behind their moods and actions? To get some insight, a team of researchers in Japan investigated exactly how cats process memories, and they determined that cats are a lot more like us than we thought. Like people, cats use “episodic

memory,” i.e., they store details of how events play out, and then use that information to guide their future actions, according to the research team as reported in the journal Behavioral Processes. The Japanese researchers used 50 cats (all volunteers) in their project. A variety of foods was placed in specific bowls to determine what foods each cat liked best. After switching foods and

bowls, the team found that a given cat could remember specific details about how they were being fed, where specific food was being placed, and whether their food had ever been served in any particular bowl. As has been shown with dogs, the study revealed that cats have a memory structure that is not unlike that of humans. The scientists now believe that being able to recall both “what” and “where” from a single event, rather than learned behavior over a long period of time, could be a trait inherent to carnivores or perhaps mammals in general.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Sleepyheads

These 3 lovely kittens, 2 boys and a girl, were found on Christmas day and had only just been born. As you can see they have grown up to be big and strong. In this photo they are having a well deserved nap after spending most of the morning tearing around the house.

Holly

Holly is the mum of the kittens in the previous photo. We found her and her babies on Christmas day it was clear that they had just been born. Since being with us she has put on a lot of weight and is now a very friendly girl. By the time you read this article she will neutered and vaccinated.

Shelley

Shelley is a very friendly girl who loves helping in the garden and with the housework. She is a little shy though and will need a bit of time to get used to a new home and owner. Once she gets to know you though she will never leave your side.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

The right stuff Puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats all have different nutritional requirements, so to ensure your pet’s good health, it’s important to provide a diet intended for their life stage. Puppy and kitten diets, for example, are specifically formulated to help the little ones grow into healthy adults. They contain additional energy that

adult pets likely don’t need. Cats and dogs should be transitioned to adult pet food when they are about one-year old. When introducing any pet to a new diet, it is important to make the change gradually, over several days. Begin by feeding him 25 percent of

Mr. Tibbs

the new diet mixed with 75 percent of the old, and then gradually increase to 50/50. Move slowly on to 75 and then 100 percent of the new diet. Going slowly will decrease the chances of digestive upset that might occur as a result of the change.

Going to the Dogs... Newfoundland dogs are good to save children from drowning, but you must have a pond of water handy and a child, or else there will be no profit in boarding a Newfoundland.

~Josh Billings

Different smells in the a dog’s urine can tell other dogs whether the dog leaving the message is female or male, old or young, sick or healthy, happy or angry. The Beagle came into prominence in the 1300s and 1400s during the days of King Henry VII of England. Elizabeth I was fond of Pocket Beagles, which were only 9" high. Mosquitoes have teeth.

This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now. He just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.

Cat Corner Tip Hold the onions We’ve previously discussed the potential problems in feeding your cat seasoning-type bulbs such as garlic, chives and onions, which can cause gastrointestinal upset. Onions in all forms -- powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated -- can break down a cat's red blood cells, leading to anemia. Beyond herbs and spices, some common houseplants also can be hazardous to your cat's health, including aloe, azaleas, chrysanthemums, lilies, marijuana (not that you would ever have any in your home), mistletoe, poinsettia, rhododendron and tulips.
