British embassy going, going, gone!
C
entral Group, the biggest family-owned conglomerate in Thailand, has bought the remaining 23 rai (9 acre) plot of the British embassy in Bangkok for 20 billion baht. The successful bid means that the British government will net over 458 million pounds in the most expensive real estate deal in Thai history. The same group ten years ago bought an initial 9.5 rai (3.8 acres) for 50 million
pounds and built the luxurious Central Embassy which is likely to be linked to the much bigger area to create a mixeduse extravaganza including hotels, condos, shopping arcades and prestigious business premises. Unless some private deal has been struck, the current embassy premises will be knocked down to make way for the mega-construction boom on Wireless Road, one of Bangkok’s most sought-after
and expensive districts. Even familiar icons, such as Queen Victoria’s statue which survived the Japanese occupation in the early 1940s, will have to go. Since the sell-off was long anticipated, the British outcry about the sale has been muted. In fact, very few embassy services to the public are based in the Wireless Road complex. BRITISH EMBASSY GOING, GOING, GONE! to visit the United Kingdom have long been registering at Trendy House facility on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Public parties and receptions have not been held in the main embassy site for 14 years and few Brits have had cause to visit it, unless to obtain a notarial service such as an affidavit. In fact, several embassy services - such as the famous “proof” of income for the Thai retirement visa - are now available only by post. Although some traditionalists feel that the sale has devalued the role of the UK in international affairs, it is also true that Britain’s influence in Southeast Asia has waned, even though economic and trade relations between Bangkok and London
remain strong. The retreat of Britain on the world stage and the recent referendum to leave the European Union mean that the London government no longer needs the awe-inspiring building structures of yesteryear. New premises for the British embassy have not yet been announced. One idea circulating is to make an expanded use of the rented office accommodation at Trendy House. In fact, many Bangkokbased embassies are now housed in high-rise buildings, partly for reasons of security. However, it would still be necessary to purchase or lease a suitable ambassadorial residence. Pattaya-based Brits will not be affected
by the sale as they are used to making the trek to Bangkok. The Jomtien consulate, strategically located near the Immigration Bureau, closed in a round of financial cuts in 2011 and was soon followed by the Chiang Mai closure. Centralization of staff in foreign capitals and a reduction in front-line services have become the hallmark of British government policy for embassies worldwide. Barry Kenyon, the Pattaya-based British consular officer from 1998-2010, said, “British embassy staff have been at Wireless Road since 1922, so this is certainly the end of an era. But the sale is the right decision for the second decade of the 21st century. You often hear people say that Pattaya is changing, but let’s not forget that applies to Britain too, especially in the post-Brexit scenario which is now unfolding.”

Chef Daeng acquired extensive experience working as senior sous chef and chef de partie in Krabi, Hat Yai and Koh Samui, where he developed his expertise in both Thai and international food, as well as his passion for Italian cuisine, which he also shares at the hotel’s restaurants.

Thai-based Valérie Goutard’s monumental sculpture The official unveiling of Ville fantastique II, a stunning sculpture created and donated by the late Thai-based world renowned sculptor Valérie “Val” Goutard, takes place at Benjasiri Park, on Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok. The unveiling ceremony is presided over by the deputy governor of Bangkok, Wanwilai Promlakano, and the French ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Gilles Garachon, who announced the donation of this sculpture on behalf of Val. After words of appreciation by the deputy governor, she is presented Ville Fantastique II’s certificate of authenticity by Frédéric Morel, Valerie’s husband and the director of Figures & Sala Ltd.
Ville fantastique II is a wondrous sculpture, and a true example of the artristry that Valérie Goutard created. As Val saw it, Thailand, and in particular the city of Bangkok, was her home, and the place where she found fulfillment, happiness, inspiration and love, and where her work as an artist found success. She decided to offer in return this sculpture to the people of Bangkok in order to thank them for their warm welcome and great support. Prior to her passing in October last year, Val was determined to install this piece of sculpture in a prime and public space where everyone could have access to it without having to enter a museum.
Val had especially chosen this piece of artwork as she saw Bangkok as a city that looks like what the piece physically captures, and that what she had created is precisely this expression of the city’s fantastic lifeaffirming urbanity. Val felt real joy knowing that this sculpture, her gift to Thailand, could bring happiness to the people of Bangkok in their daily lives. The plaque on the base of Ville fantastique II was engraved with the following message of Val: “Surreal vision of the city, crossed destinies, doors and windows opened to the horizon to foster dreams and free thinking”.

Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts takes its culinary expertise to new heights Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has rolled out its new vanilla-inspired savoury menu at all its properties, following the concept’s overwhelming success in Europe. Discerning diners can sample the innovative ‘Vanille Salée’ promotion until March 21. Comprising six one-of-akind vanilla-enhanced dishes, the concept is now being made available at properties across the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Traditionally used for desserts, vanilla produces exciting results when added to hearty savoury dishes: its mild flavour harmonises to
surprising perfection with white meats and fish. Subtly reinforcing roasting aromas and herbal scents, vanilla also transforms tomatoes, beetroot and even onions with an unexpected touch of the exotic. This exceptional taste experience has been encapsulated in six savoury vanilla creations, championing the queen of spices at Mövenpick hotels worldwide. The tempting entrées include “White onion velouté” (soup), “Sashimi of tuna and salmon” and “Goat cheese and figs salad”, while the main course menu features “Pike perch filet and endive”, “Veal tenderloin and Garden Vegetables” and “Guinea fowl breast Melba”. “These culinary creations have been concocted by our talented Director of Food & Beverage Europe, Thomas Hollenstein, who has set out to surprise our guests with this interesting mix of flavours,” said Olivier Chavy, president
and CEO, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts. “‘Vanille Salée’ is a real palate pleaser and we hope food enthusiasts who dine at our properties around Asia, Africa and Middle East will enjoy this new gastronomic experience.” Bourbon vanilla Fine Bourbon vanilla is used in all the dishes. Veracruz, a region of the Gulf of Mexico, is regarded as the global home of vanilla-growing. As long ago as the 14th century, the Aztecs enjoyed the fragrance of fermented orchid pods, but it was not until the 19th century that cuttings of vanilla spice arrived in Europe, in the botanical gardens of Paris. From there, they were transported to Madagascar and Réunion, then known as Île Bourbon – hence the name Bourbon vanilla. The French titles of the six ‘Vanille Salée’ dishes pay tribute to vanilla’s origins.

MAHARANI RESTAURANT
The Queen of Tastes
It was back in 1973 when the Royal Cliff Resort (then called the Royal Cliff Beach Terrace) opened its doors and became the first luxury five-star hotel in the area. Now, of course, it is the most iconic of Pattaya’s hotels with an internationally acclaimed reputation. Set in a 64-acre tropical paradise overlooking the Gulf of Siam it consists of four 5-star hotels linked by walkways, boasting over 1,000 rooms and suites, 11 restaurants and bars, six swimming pools, two health spas, a world-class convention centre, three ballrooms and countless meeting rooms, not to mention a magnificent catamaran for private charter. The resort’s award-winning restaurants offer gourmet cuisine from around the world: Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Italian, Thai and new world European. Mick and I were invited to dine at the Maharani, their signature Indian restaurant. Saffron coloured walls and intricate scalloped door canopies and light sconces complement the traditional furnishings all set off to perfection under an imposing crystal chandelier. Al fresco dining (for about 20 people) is offered on the terrace with a dazzling backdrop of the gardens and palm fringed beach. The menu at Maharani is exclusively Indian with prominence given to the cuisine of northern India. Chef Hosan Raj Giri hails

from Nepal and his epicurean lineage smiles through the succession of dishes that make up this most impressive menu. For starters we chose butter fried prawns and vegetable pakoras. Chicken tikka almost won the vote as did the king fish marinated in spices and cooked in the tawa (a griddle) but when our prawns arrived we were delighted. The most succulent fleshy prawns lightly coated with a gram flour batter and spices had been fried to exactness. They almost melted in the mouth
but held their “bite” imparting the most subtle seasoning. Indian vegetarian cuisine must be the best in the world and here at Maharani the most discerning veggie would be spoilt for choice with the diversity of dishes, also reassuringly, no MSG in used in this kitchen. Tandoori fare is of course exceedingly popular and a global phenomenon. Originating from the traditional mud stoves and clay ovens of rural villages it has been a culinary favourite since the 1960’s. The food is first prepared in a special marinade and then spiked on long metal skewers and inserted in the oven for roasting. Here at the Maharani the royal tandoori platter costs B.550 (small) or B.1000 for the large portion, while for fish lovers the seafood medley is B.780 for two people. All items can be ordered separately from the chicken and fish tikkas to lamb sheikh kebabs, giant prawns coated with spices, paneer cheese plus plenty of fresh vegetables. For a dip into the days of the Raj, why not order the iconic mulligataani soup with its heady mix of spiced mutton and stock and follow with their flagship Maharani lamb chops? We were told the Kashmiri rogan josh (B.350) is a best seller here as are the chicken dishes, tikka and the extremely popular butter chicken
shrouded in its tomato cream gravy. Lamb and mutton are house signature dishes, the Kashmiri roganjosh heading the list with Mysore lamb gently simmered in spices and delicately flavoured with fresh curry leaves and fennel (B.350). Lamb Vindaloo and Hyderabadi lamb biryiani follow closely on their heels in the popularity stakes. Our choice, after a lot of deliberation, was for the Malabar fish curry, a traditional southern Indian fish curry with exotic spices, fresh coconut milk and tamarind. To accompany this we ordered a dhal fry together with a vegetable biryani (B.220). There are 14 bread varieties and any one makes a great accompaniment with our favourite being the deep fried puri. After all this enjoyable eating, a dessert was beyond us, but for a sweet ending the gulab Jamun (cheese-based warm sticky sweet), coconut custard or rasagula (cottage cheese cooked in sugar syrup served with saffron) would harmoniously conclude your subcontinent meal. The Maharani restaurant serves very affordable authentic cuisine rooted in geography and history. The service is exemplary and the setting spectacular. What could be nicer than a tandoori lunch on a charming terrace amid a tropical garden overlooking the azure ocean of the Gulf of Siam? Not much, we think! Maharani is open from 11.00 – 14.30 hrs and from 18.00 to 22.30 hrs and located on the ground floor of The Royal Cliff Resort, Pratanmak Hill, Pattaya. Closed Mondays. Tel: (038) 250 421 or visit www. royalcliff.com. Credit cards accepted.

Primo - Corrado’s Kitchen
Eat on the Abruzzo shores… Have you ever been to Abruzzo, Italy? It’s located east of Rome on the Adriatic Coast and is known as Italy’s Queen of cuisine. It boasts a rich repertoire of robust mountain dishes and an abundance of delicious seafood. Why am I asking? Because if you have had the pleasure you will definitely want to evoke those culinary memories, and if you haven’t there’s a treat in store. Chef Corrado has created an Italian gastro-bistro where the specialities of his home region are served with an abundance of love and charming enthusiasm. Open since late November last year the buzz is already on the grapevine and Chef Corrado’s new bambino is the talk of the town, the pizzas have been perfected, the wines settled and weekly promotions in place, so its time to visit Primo – Corrado’s Kitchen. Mick and I visited recently to see (and taste) for ourselves the delights of this regional cooking from Abruzzo. Tradition states that Abruzzo’s shepherds were the inventors of the classic bruschetta and here they are represented in a myriad of ways. Their signature starter includes a quartet presented with
a variety of toppings (B.180) the best, vibrant salads looked extra tempting especially the creamy centered Burrata mozzarella decorated with a market garden of peppery baby rocket. I chose to start the proceedings with an Abruzzo speciality, cozze e vongole (mussels and baby clams) (B.230) which had been bathed in the region’s famous Trebbiano white wine and accompanied by toasted bread to dunk and dip into the briny essence of the sea and the winey reduction. Mick opted for a dish of carpaccio di manzo, thinly sliced Australian beef had been well dressed with an intense balsamic vinegar and served with rocket and Grana Padano cheese for an interesting layering of flavours (B.320). Italian centric wines are served here from not only the best wine estates in the country, they have also been chosen for their inherited attributes through the wine growing families across the years. The first pour of the evening was a delightful, soft, refreshing, fresh white from Abruzzo called Trebbiano and our second, a Talamonti, a very rich, lively red from the same region.

Both are excellent and priced at B.180 per glass. Pasta is the integral part of any Italian's eating plan and here the menu fairly sparkles with pasta variations. From penna alla pastora (shepherd’s style), through the classic spaghetti frutti di mare or Amatricina through lenguine alla telline (clams) to a speciality ravioli which caught my eye immediately. This dish brings together the wonderful flavours of braised beef and wild mushrooms, but not only that: this beef had been braised in the famous Montepulciano red wine from Marche and Molise regions. This very nearly won my vote but in the end I was lured by the delicious black ink flat spaghetti served with plump, sweet prawns, squid, basil leaves and pops of cherry tomatoes. Mick chose a tasty classic main dish, squid with potatoes (B.240). Soft succulent potatoes steeped with tomatoes and the freshest squid results in a homely comforting plate of food fit for any nona’s table. The menu abounds with speciality homeland dishes from pan fried sea grouper with porcini mushrooms to 3-hour slow-cooked lamb with
Mediterranean herbs and rosemary potatoes, beef sirloin cutlets and pork steaks and so much more. We now come to Primo’s pizzas. Crusts are thin and crispy and the toppings of supreme quality. For the epicurious there are the white pizzas which appear on the plate still bubbling with cheese but without their best pal, the tomato. Try one; they’re smothered in ricotta and mozzarella cheese and whichever topping takes your fancy. There’s a culinary surprise most nights of the week down at Primo. Mondays it’s a pizza and pasta buffet for B.340 (17.00 – 20.00), Tuesday buy one dessert and another free. Thursday buy just one pizza and get a steaming plate of spaghetti in oil (from 16.00 to 19.00). Friday night is Ladies night and all the fairer sex get 20 percent discount on pasta and pizza (one or two ladies) or 30 percent for three ladies or more plus buy 1 drink and get 1 free. Saturday and Sunday there’s a 10 percent discount between 13.00 and 17.00 and Sunday it’s family day with a 10 percent discount on three people or more. Refuse a dessert in an Italian

restaurant and they think you’re crazy, and you would be to miss one of Corrado’s sumptuous home made dolces. Fruit tarts (blueberry, apricot or apple) are prepared daily and exceedingly luscious, they are, especially if you have a scoop of ice cream to melt over the fruity mirrored surface. Mick and I tucked into an oozingly delectable Tirimisu bursting with cocao and sweetness. It was indeed a sweetly intense experience to bring down the curtain on our dining. If we weren’t quite able to make it to the shores of Abruzzo it was surely the next best option to visit Chef Corrado’s Primo restaurant and taste the specialities of the region in his kitchen.

2017 film Beauty and the Beast, a live-action remake of Disney's 1991 animated film of the same name, itself an adaptation of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's fairy tale. The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson. In the film, Belle is taken prisoner by a fearsome Beast in his enchanted castle and learns to look beyond his appearance while evading a narcissistic hunter who seeks to take Belle for himself. Condon originally planned on not only drawing inspiration from the original film, but he also planned to include most, if not all, of the Menken/Ashman songs from the Broadway musical, with the intention of making the film as a "straightforward, live-action, large-budget movie musical". Menken will return to score the film's music, which will feature songs from the original film by him and Howard Ashman, plus new material written by Menken and Tim Rice. Menken said the film will not include songs that were written for the Broadway musical and instead, created three new songs. On January 19, 2017, it was confirmed by both Disney and Celine Dion, singer of the original title track, that she will perform one of the new original songs, "How Does a Moment Last Forever", to play over the end titles. The film will also feature a new version of "Beauty and the Beast" by Ariana Grande and John Legend.

fairness-fitness-finery Facial design to regain a youthful appearance
Vol. 05 No. 05 | March 1-15, 2017
by Thonglor Clinic
With the modern advances of cosmetic medicine, it is now easier to regain our youth or at least slow down the aging process. A healthier lifestyle definitely helps but other tools are available. We are constantly exposed to stresses and toxic chemicals via either our environment or from the food and beverages we consume. Sometimes even water appears innocuous but can contain harmful chemicals as is often reported on the news. Our foods are now heavily processed and contain all sorts of additives, preservatives and colorants. Over time all these accumulate in our body and end up causing different disease processes. Chelation therapy, an intravenous injection of Calcium EDTA combined with vitamin supplements in a saline solution, will help in removing heavy metal toxins and different harmful chemicals. Fish is a good source of protein but quite often can contain mercury or other heavy metals. Polluted air also contains a lot of toxins. Analyzing our diet carefully helps to identify deficiencies. Vitamin supplements can then help rebalance our bodies. Discussing your lifestyle, a physician can identify the pitfalls and suggest how to correct these. A healthy person will always
radiate more than someone that just survives on a poor diet and excessive lifestyle. Once you are on the right path then it becomes easier to return your youthful appearance. Many tools are at the disposition of your doctor. Laser treatments can help to rejuvenate the superficial layers of the skin. Skin imperfections can be removed using lasers. Most people are familiar with Botox to remove or attenuate wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid injections can help to replump areas where collagen has long gone. Skin
sagginess can be reduced with these injections. Skilled doctors are now more and more using a very popular form of treatment: thread lifting. Different types of threads are available on the market and these are inserted in grid fashion to promote collagen deposit and promote a lifting effect in the sagging areas of the face or neck. Even hands can be rejuvenated via these processes. These threads are made of absorbable synthetic suture material that is commonly used in regular surgeries. The art of creating dimensional lifting is very rewarding
Clear your plate of Alzheimer’s You may think you enjoy the Western diet--loaded with red meats, added sugars and syrups and processed foods—but none of those foods feed your brain or your body. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition looked at the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the eating habits of folks in Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Egypt, India, Mongolia, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and the United States. If nothing else, it reinforced how mind-numbing the typical Western diet is. In the U.S., one in nine people 65 and older has Alzheimer’s disease. But the study found switching to a traditional Mediterranean diet (lots of fresh vegetables, fruits and fish, olive oil, and occasional meat as side dishes and not every day) cuts your risk of AD in half. And traditional, meat-sparing diets in India, Japan and Nigeria are associated with an additional 50 percent reduction in AD risk. To protect your brain, eat 5 to 9 servings of produce daily; opt for 2-3 servings of fish (salmon is super) weekly; eliminate red meats, added sugars and syrups and processed grains from your diet. That adds up to chasing Alzheimer’s disease off your plate!
to the patient. The maximum effect takes one to two months to be achieved and the effect can last one to two years depending on each case. This procedure is done as an outpatient. The treatment takes one to two hours and is relatively painfree. An anesthetic cream is usually applied for one hour to desensitize the area. Following this the skin is carefully cleaned and sterilized.
Very fine needles are then inserted in grid fashion respecting facial structures. Some more severe cases will require more than one intervention. Non-Surgical Facelift (Thread lifting) A thread lifting is a popular procedure to achieve facial refreshment and improve skin quality without having to undergo surgery and the problem of scarring. The procedure is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that can be performed at the practice with a minimum of downtime and will cost much less than a conventional by Dr Natnicha Loichuen facelift. It can be used to enhance and improve the appearance of a sagging neck, sagging cheeks and jowls and droopy eyebrows. You can personalise your surgery to suit your exact needs and your doctor will also make recommendations for improvements. The procedure can be tailored to suit your exact needs to ensure you are totally happy with the results. It is a type of face lift that is often referred to as the “lunch hour lift”. This is down to its simplicity and the time it takes to carry out the procedure. A tiny notch will be made behind the ear or behind the hairline and then fine threads are then advanced along pre-marked contours. These threads have fine filaments that become fixed to the tissue and are then gently smoothed down. Your body then starts to produce new bundles of collagen which surround each filament and this in turn creates a subtle yet effective lift. The results differ for each person, but look very natural giving a rejuvenated and refreshed look. There is no scarring and recovery times are a lot less than those associated with traditional surgery. A typical thread lift takes as little as one hour to perform, but the length will depend on the number of filaments your doctor uses and the areas being treated. The great thing about a thread lift is that it offers quick

After
recovery together with excellent results. This procedure requires a minimum amount of invasive surgery and leaves no scarring. Local anaesthetic is all that is required and there is no hospital stay required. Another good factor about the thread lift is that it is much more affordable than a regular face lift and the results are long lasting. If you are looking for a quick and effective solution to a range of aging problems then a thread lift is the perfect solution.

Scientists have discovered that men's and women’s brains actually function somewhat differently. When focused on a task, men tend to use only one side of their brain at a time, devoting all of their attention and concentration to the task at hand. Women, on the other hand, tend to use both sides of the brain at the same time, making them more adept at "multi-tasking.” Thomas Edison, the American who invented the light bulb, was afraid of the dark.
Muay Thai Punches by Rory Coughlan
When training in a the art of Muay Thai, students are taught many different techniques. One such technique is the Muay Thai punch. At a time when men did not have any weapons to fight wild animals and even other human beings they made use of every part of their body as a defensive weapon needed for survival. Punching is the easiest defensive and offensive weapon to control compared to the other parts of the body. Muay Thai teachers and trainers emphasize the proper Muay Thai Punch techniques in order to accurately hit the target. One should use the knuckles as this is the most effective way to hit the target. The usual target of a Muay Thai fighter is the area of the upper body towards the face. But regardless of where the punch hits the target it is important to remember to immediately pull back the fist straight away from the opponent in order to prevent exposing yourself to counter-punching. The punch thrown should unnerve the opponent. Some basic categories of Muay Thai punches, which are learned in Muay Thai are:• The Jab • The Straight Punch • The Hook • The Swing • The Uppercut Muay Thai punches if combined with different style of kicks could badly hurt an opponent especially if it’s executed with so much power. Everyday intensive Muay Thai training enhances a fighter’s skill and senses in mastering the art.
A good punch is a result of harmony and perfect synchronization, namely, the twist of the heels to add momentum to the hips movement, the move of the hips to strengthen the shoulder movement and the turn of the shoulder to add to the power of the punch. Everything must be in synchronization to make the punch effective. The powerful punch will come if you combine forces of shoulder, hip and foot to put additional power of punch. Twisting the wrists just before the contact is the most useful technique for an effective punching. If you do not have enough technique to throw a punch your punch will often end up against the opponent’s arm guarding. By twisting and pushing its way through the protecting guard. The power and the accuracy of the punch will increase significantly.

hanin Vanijwongse, CEO of Habitat Group Company Limited, a real estate developer which offers holiday experience and worthy investment opportunities, unveiled the company’s business plan for 2017. The company has a plan to expand its investment in popular destinations, such as Pattaya. According to market research, Pattaya is still growing steadily. In the first 10 months of 2016, occupancy rate stood at an average of 75 percent per month, which is a satisfactory number. Therefore, the company is confident that there is still room for growth in real estate for investment in Pattaya, especially for hospitality and industry businesses.
The first project to launch in 2017 is ‘X2 Pattaya Oceanphere’, a modern luxury pool villa resort with 59 pool villa units. The 800 million baht project is located on Na Jomtien 56 with only 500 meters from the beach. The project is distinctively designed as a 5-star pool villa and comes with a unique investment program which offers 7 percent guaranteed return per year for 5 years and 60 percent profit sharing after the first 5 years. It’s Just a Matter of Time--Once Again! The article below was written almost nine years ago when our local real estate industry was facing the same obstacles and mistakes faced today; it seems like déjà vu, but the big question now is: will we be as lucky as we were nearly a decade ago? And will we recover as quickly this time? PATTAYA, November 2008— Real estate on the Eastern Seaboard has suffered so many setbacks over the past year or so, with one obstacle after another eradicating most of the incredible growth and momentum we experienced just a couple of years back. As a result, the natives are getting restless as many foreigners who invested during the euphoria of the boom now feel like the market hasn’t delivered on its promises. There have been battles in the courts and threats on the streets; people are unhappy with market reversals and recent developments. A few years ago all was good. Local real estate attracted dozens
of newcomers, know-it-alls eager to share their wisdom with property investors. And share they did: local newspapers and magazines bulged with optimistic articles and photographs of these real estate hotshots sitting behind desks, working at their computers, posing with military officers, civic leaders or Thai beauties. We all have our own way of branding. It’s part of the game! Whatever approach a real estate company takes in projecting its image or mission, customers usually rely on the media when selecting trustworthy professionals in our industry. Unfortunately, too many of those property gurus are nothing more than con men who are now being recognized as such because financial disasters and huge losses are starting to pile up--and so far with very little recourse. Yes, sir, your money is gone! As I have been writing this ‘Eye on Pattaya’ column for some time now, I have managed to

attract a loyal following of those who applaud my challenges to the injustices so often found in our real estate business. But then there are those who feel I am somehow personally damaging the real estate industry and should just shut up! No matter how one might feel about my editorial approach, one thing is certain and agreed upon by most: Nobody likes the Bad Guy! We’re not talking about ‘Real Estate Robin Hoods’ that pull off a clever land deal and fill the stomachs of the poor. No, we’re talking about people who bilk investors out of huge amounts of money and enrich their own lots. We’re talking about smooth talkers who sell the dream and don’t deliver! These characters are starting to surface out of the post boom real estate market showing their true colors...and it’s not rosy pink. The names of these devious players have been the topic of more and more rumors of late—from Web forums and editorials to

word-of-mouth, and I am afraid it is just the beginning. As the world is embroiled in a turbulent economic climate, the Eastern Seaboard is facing difficult times ahead. How much longer? That is, how much longer before we must face the music and accept what many foreigners here already know? Look at the facts: We have huge projects throughout the Eastern Seaboard that will not be built; we have extensive residential and commercial developments on and off the beach that will not be completed. Look at the facts. They are staring us in the face and too many have closed their eyes to the reality of it. No, it’s not the end of the world; it’s simply the beginning of a new cycle. We in all levels of real estate must learn from our mistakes and create ways to better protect those that support our industry with their investments. The sooner we stop throwing away bad money into projects and developments that are not going anywhere, the sooner we can make the adjustments in our property investment strategies. It is just a matter of time before the industry will start taking inventory on the developments that aren’t going to be completed at this time, during this cycle. How the industry addresses these setbacks will determine the level of consumer confidence we can carry into the ‘New Cycle Mindset’ of the property market consumer. We need to free stagnating investments and release them back into the market. We need to deal with renegade developers and failed properties now, as the manner in which these issues are handled will predict the level of confidence and financial support we deserve and get from investors and end users. During the boom years, many investors made money in a rising market; in the New Cycle, many

investors will profit as values adjust to the market. We have a lot of new construction coming on the market and a huge secondary market of existing resale properties. These are condos and houses that will be value for money for those that do their homework and sharpen their negotiating skills. And as always…..those quality, class act condominium and housing developers with deep pockets to weather the storm always have a market and they will continue to do well even in these hard times. Property developers and real estate brokers may have a lovehate relationship, and many of their clients may have had to fight their way through the property market conmen and pros. But in the end, the Eastern Seaboard has some fantastic condo and housing developments to choose from and a good number of qualified and experienced international property specialists ready to provide clients with highly professional property consulting services. March 2017: Now the big question is: What level of consumer confidence are we able to carry into the next New Cycle Mindset? And will we maintain the level of confidence and financial support the investors and end users will need to once again inject capital into the real estate market? Recently a couple of articles have surfaced referring to the Pattaya real estate market as having ‘hit the pause button,’ or falling into ‘a lull in the market,’ and—according to a well-known Bangkok blog— going through ‘a terrible slump’! Consequently, many are asking how long the slump will last. I say it will last about as long as it takes to sell those 10,000 new unsold condo units we started 2017 with! Having said that, all is not lost as with the robust take-up rates and sales quota statistics we have seen in recent years, those 10,000 new units could sell quicker than you think. Bottom-line is that we can clearly see the incredible progress that road, rail and air transportation infrastructure is making combined with some huge commercial, retail and residential developments planned and poised to be launched in the near future. What does it all mean? The next real estate boom is just ahead.

chance of enjoying the sea breeze. The project’s interlocking master plan creates privacy from the terraced layout to every single unit in the project. The interior seamlessly connects to outdoor swimming pool and private garden allowing guests to easily arrange the space for multi purposes and various activities. The full height sliding glass doors and windows beckon guests to enjoy the idyllic beautiful ocean vista. X2 Pattaya Oceanphere comprises two unit types – one bedroom unit at 138.5–193.5 sq. m. and two bedroom unit at 201.5-267 sq. m. Each type is fully furnished and has features such as spiral staircase in two bedroom units and electric appliances. Every unit has a private swimming pool and
garden. Price starts from 9.79 - 15 million baht or 70,000 baht per sq. m. at average. Currently, 40 percent of the units have been reserved, 100 percent of which is for investment. Sale is expected to close by end of 2018. In the past year, although the economy was not well, one of its two real estate projects which launched in 2015, X2 Vibe Pattaya SeaPhere on Soi Na Jomtien 32, were sold out. About 80 percent of the buyers were Thais who wanted to invest in real estate, while the other 20 percent were international investors such as those from Singapore, Hong Kong and China. Another project, Best Western Premier BayPhere Pattaya, is a lowrise beachfront condominium, located on Soi Na Jomtien 18. The 700 million baht project began

presale in September 2016, and 60 percent of the units were reserved within four months, which is a big success. Although the real estate market in general was quite slow, especially in the fourth quarter of the year, 100 percent of the buyers were Thais from Bangkok. This shows that there is still purchasing power, and investors are still looking for properties to invest in. This year, the company expects to close sales of the remaining units (40 percent) at Best Western Premier BayPhere Pattaya. The sales target is around 300 million baht. For revenue recognition, there will be one project ready for ownership transfer in the second or third quarter of the year, which is the 300 million baht X2 Vibe Pattaya SeaPhere project. A part of X2 Pattaya Oceanphere pool villa project will also be ready for transfer, amounting to 200 million baht. DIVORCE AGREEMENT What is a Divorce Agreement? A Divorce Agreement is a legal document that allows divorcing spouses to come to an agreement regarding the terms of their divorce. This is possible in an uncontested divorce wherein the couple mutually agrees to terminate their marriage and that there has no disagreements over children or property. What does a Divorce Agreement contain? Do we need to enter into an agreement before we separate? It contains provisions regarding the terms of sharing of assets, child custody and support, visitation rights, alimony, and other important matters. It is recommended that you decide these matters beforehand and formalize them in a divorce contract. This will guarantee that there are no disagreements before you go to the registration office. When one or both spouse does not agree with the terms of the separation and things become complicated, or an agreement thereon cannot be reached, you’ll probably end up putting your case in court where a judge decides on all related issues. Do I need a lawyer to make the divorce agreement? It’s highly recommended that you appoint a lawyer to make your Divorce Agreement. In case the other party has arranged it, it is recommended that you have it reviewed by your own lawyer to make sure that important legal provisions are clearly specified in order to protect your interests. It is necessary that you trust the experts to help you completely understand the content of the agreement as you may miss some serious provisions and end up losing significant rights; or if there will be some disagreements on a provision later, you may end up spending more money trying to resolve the problem. What are the benefits of entering into a Divorce Agreement? A Divorce Agreement lets you settle issues without
the need for court actions. There is less emotional stress involved to both parties, as well as to their children and respective families as it enables the couple to end their marriage in a civilized manner because important matters are mutually agreed upon. Because the parties agree upon the terms themselves, they are likely to abide by the agreement. Once the Divorce Agreement is signed before two witnesses and registered at the district office, it becomes a binding contract and both divorcing spouses shall be obliged to follow its terms. In case one party violates or fails to comply with the provisions stipulated in the agreement, the other party may bring this to court for enforcement. Can a Divorce Agreement be modified? Changing certain provisions of the divorce agreement may be necessary if there is a significant change in circumstances after the divorce has been granted. Child custody, visitation, and child support are modifiable as long as you can show a significant change in circumstances and that the new arrangement shall be in the best interest of the child. How can a Divorce Agreement be modified? If both parties agree to the new terms, a revised agreement must be drawn up with the assistance of your lawyers to be certain that there will be no problems in the future. The revised agreement must be filed with the court to be officially enforceable.

Prior to that, he held the Resident Manager position at Citadines Sukhumvit 8 Bangkok and Citadines Sukhumvit 11 Bangkok and also worked at Citadines Sukhumvit 23 Bangkok and Citadines Sukhumvit 16 Bangkok.
“A resident manager always has a critical role in running the property’s day-to-day operations, and this is especially true when opening a new property,” says Andrew Langdon, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts chief development officer and senior vice president Asia. “Joseph’s key goal is to strike a balance between offering exceptional service to our guests while achieving a profitable revenue level for the owners and a harmonious workplace for the team. Mazda redefines subcompact car segment with new Mazda2 Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., is stimulating the Thai passenger car market once again with a second new model for this year. While the new Mazda3 was introduced in January, Mazda follows up with the launch of the new 2017 Mazda2 staged in grand style. The new Mazda2, which is expected to set new standards in the subcompact segment, bears the concept of “The Next Level of Excitement” and gets superstar Napat Siangsomboon as presenter. The Mazda2 is also the second Mazda model to be equipped with the innovative SkyactivVehicle Dynamics system featuring G-Vectoing Control (GVC) and added features. Meanwhile, the retail pricing has been raised just marginally, starting at just 1,000 baht for increased value.
The launch event of the improved Mazda2 today signifies a new concept, with the new model introduction being preceded with a full concert. Praew Kanitkul starts off the program with soft jazz tunes while the highlight is the introduction of the new Mazda brand ambassador Napat Siangsomboon, one of the hottest celebrities in showbiz today. Napat comes with the new Mazda2 and talks about his experience with the car, travelling around the country as Mazda presenter. Another big surprise follows, with Thailand’s rock band Bodyslam taking on the stage for a full rock concert. Chanchai Trakarnudomsuk, president of Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., said although the Thai automobile market fell by 4 per
cent to 767,798 units last year, it is expected to recover in 2017 with fiercer competition among automakers, particularly in launching new models into the market. “Last year each market segment had mediocre performance, and only the pickup truck market experienced growth, with 333,415 units representing a growth of 2 per cent. The small car (B-car and Eco car) market was next with 192,518 units (down 11 per cent) and the MPV market reached 111,481 units (down 11 per cent). We can see that these thee markets combine to make a very large market, and the new Mazda2 launched today will be an important part in helping revitalize the small passenger car market once again,” he said. The Mazda2 has always been a core model for Mazda in Thailand, with more than 165,000 units having been sold in the country since it was first introduced in 2009. Of these, 121,000 were from the first generation and 44,000 from the second generation. The introduction of the new Mazda2 today will help Mazda achieve its 50,000-units sales target in Thailand this year and grow by 18 per cent. “The Mazda3 launched in January received

All my past experiences have well equipped me to take the helm on AHG’s two Phuket-Phang Nga properties, and I am ready to hit the beach running,” he said.
Beach wedding collection at Cape Dara Resort A wedding by the sea is the dream of many women and surely the very heart of such an affair is the bridal gown that makes the beach-side ceremony like a dream come true. Nhoo Matthews Atelier has meticulously crafted a special collection over six months from the first inspiration and initial designs to the careful hand-embroidering of each dress with pearls, sequins, Swarovski rhinestones, and lace presenting a texture of fluffy flowers in full bloom. It is a collection of dazzling elegance and the most ravishing detail, plucked starfish, pearls, and coral from the ocean. These are the highlights of these wedding gowns together with a blue color that comes equally from the sea and the sky. Beau, vice president of Cape Dara Resort, has contributed her own dress design, reflecting the character of today’s bride, clean, chic, and accentuates the body line for the perfect figure on your “Big Day”. As for the “Finale” dress of the collection, Nhoo got her inspiration from the chandelier of the Vela Grand Ballroom at the Cape Dara Resort that floats above the floor of a wide ocean. In March of next year, Cape Dara Resort will be hosting a wedding fair where you can choose from the widest selection of services and products like wedding dress, cosmetics, invitations, souvenirs, mementos, and wedding organizers who can assist you both before and after your ceremony. Youth Focus The Living Classroom by Mike Jacobson She awakens in a forest. Rising from the earth, she palms her dampened eyes, and then –she feels chilled – a stranger draws near. Eye locks into eye – she softens and the worries of the world crumbling away as he stands before her, a fetching figure she estimates as surely the most heroically handsome, perfectly princely, roundly rotund, dim-witted man-donkey. Peering from the brush, a mischievous little sprite lets loose a chuckle upon seeing that the spells he cast over them both ended up creating such an awkward scene. All of this unfolds just a few kilometers outside Central Pattaya. Year 5 students at Mooltripakdee International School (MIS) are performing one of the comical moments from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They adapted their own scripts based on a prose version of the Shakespeare play. The teacher watches their work to see that there is a demonstrated understanding of plot, setting, character, and conflict. MIS aims to infuse the arts into students’ lives as an important component of their education. The school holds progressive educational values and strives to provide an environment that promotes spirited, inquiring minds. Forming and sustaining a performing arts programme where there has been none will be in line with MIS values. This past January, MIS started its effort by launching an after-lunch Drama Club for Year 4 to 6 students. Each Monday, group members have a 30-minute class with the Year 5 teachers to learn acting skills and rehearse for an eventual performance in front of the school at morning assembly. The club has close to a dozen students and parents are already asking for an additional after-school drama club to be created. Miss Maddy, one of the
Students learn about river life by Mark Holmes teachers working with the Drama Club, said she wants to “Make it fun and have a lot of laughs while we learn something about ourselves.” With enough interest, an expanded programme can be developed. This might lead to an after-school drama club that stages full-length productions, takes field-trips to see professional performances, attend theater workshops, or lead to inter-school cooperation for competitions in drama, singing, and storytelling. The school initiative will flourish if students are enthusiastic and if it is supported by teachers and parents. Performance art does not pertain only to English class or after-school programmes. Those same Year 5 students who acted as Shakespeare’s Titania, Bottom, and Puck used drama to enrich their study of the Spanish invasion of the Maya and the Norman invasion of the Anglo-Saxons. Instead of a limited investigating of the history by reading just a summary of distant dates and unheard of names about conquests and coronations, students lived those events. The data students often must memorize is now
lifted from the page and life is breathed into it. It becomes meaningful. Information is retained because it is not simply an exercise in the rote memorization of facts, dates, and names. Students engage and explore the material, which results in meaningful learning. Drama is an exploration of humanity and self, a reflection of life that is written, performed, seen, and thought about. Students apply their own prior experience to learning that immerses them in the material. In writing and performing a script for something like a historical invasion, students are asked to make sense of a different set of people and ethics; accepted notions of truth and justice are challenged and expanded upon. They hone their ability to empathize with another perspective and connections to their own experiences can be made. The inclusion of the arts at school is significant as a generator of creativity and ideas. As enthusiasm continues to grow, the realization of a full arts programme can be fulfilled. Mike Jacobson is a Year 5 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School Pattaya.
Year 5 students from Garden International School (GIS) spent three days living and learning on a barge. They travelled along the Chao Phraya River to study sustainability and the current threats to the ecosystem by interviewing local people on Koh Kret, viewing wildlife and plants along the river and participating in a water hyacinth investigation to check the health level of the water. Among the highlights were getting to experience a pottery wheel to shape and spin their own pots, swimming at Bang Sai Bay and jumping off the barge into the water and learning lots of new games to play - Ultimate Ninja was the favourite! On the last day, students visited a large market and bought breakfast to share with all their classmates and teachers. The students also demonstrated responsibility by being part of barge crews, and took turns mopping the deck, recording the navigation details and preparing, cooking and serving meals. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Mark Holmes is a primary teacher at Garden International School.
Backpack to School: Finding the perfect bag for your child A child totes his backpack around all year long, so finding the right satchel, knapsack, or carryall can be the difference between daily ease and constant discomfort. Find the very best backpack for your child by keeping three simple factors in mind.
sack lunch can opt for lighter-weight backpacks. Remember to think about activities your child uses his bag for outside of school. If he takes his backpack camping or to swim practice, for example, you may want to select a bag with weatherproof fabric.
Consider your child’s life How your child uses his backpack will determine the type of bag needed. Older kids who carry heavy books back and forth to school may need more supportive backpacks with ergonomic shoulder straps as well as belts that go across the waist and chest. Young children who typically only need to tote a few papers and a
Make sure it’ll last Kids go through a lot in a year, and it really takes a toll on their backpacks. Because of the rough-and-tumble student lifestyle, kids’ backpacks should be sturdy so that they last through the school year and beyond. Look for bags with water and tear resistant fabric, as well as reinforced shoulder straps.
It has to be cool Lastly, it’s important for your child to have a say in the style and color of his backpack. A child will wear his backpack almost everyday of the school year, so finding a design that makes him smile is essential. Look for interesting patterns or colors that your child will like. And don’t forget that you can always make a backpack a little more special with a monogram of your child’s initials or a few pins and patches. Focusing on these three backpack factors will help you find the perfect satchel for your child at the end of summer. Enjoy searching for the perfect backpack with your child.

This & That J.Edgar Hoover a victim of gay gossip?
Popular Conspiracy Theories There is no shortage of suggestions that the FBI director for 48 years, until his death in 1972 at age 77, was gay. But some at any rate are suspect. Author Truman Capote openly admitted he was more interesting in spreading salacious gossip about Hoover than in verifying the truth. Socialite Susan Rosenstiel claimed she had once seen Hoover dressed in full drag and high heels at a sex orgy, calling himself Mary. But had she really? As founder and director of the FBI for so long, Hoover had many enemies. He was overbearing and arrogant and ordered his agents to snoop on Americans for no particular reason. Although several presidents thought of sacking him, none dared to make the move. His biographer Richard Hack denies the rumour that Hoover was gay, saying he had an affair with Dorothy Lamour and was absolutely straight.
Hack thinks that all the gay gossip about Hoover doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. In 2011 the gay rumours surfaced again with a new biopic starring Leonardo diCaprio. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film “J.Edgar” makes out that the fanatical persecutor of gays and lesbians was himself a closet homosexual. This is the guy who banned gays from joining the FBI and spread gossip about Adlai Stevenson, Eleanor Roosevelt and even Madame Chiang Kai Shek to damage their political reputations. What is clear is that Hoover had a strong male bonding with his deputy at the FBI, Clyde Tolson. The two life-long bachelors worked together, ate together at the same Washington restaurant, played together, vacationed together and more or less lived together. When Hoover died, Tolson inherited the estate and is even buried only yards
from his lifelong companion. Inseparable even in death, it seems. Most FBI historians, then and now, dismiss the gay rumours as sour grapes and portray the relationship with Tolson as platonic or buddybuddy. After all, Laurel and Hardy shared the same bed in several movies but nobody has ever suggested gross indecency. But the new movie suspects the FBI director of homoeroticism. It was scripted by Dustin Lance Black, a gay writer who won an Oscar for his 2008 film about the San Francisco mayor and civil rights activist Harvey Milk. Scriptwriter Black never quite puts Hoover’s sexuality beyond all possible doubt. After stumbling encounters with women in the movie, including Ginger Rogers’ mother, Hoover settles down to live with his mum, played in the movie by Judi Dench. So everyone can agree Hoover was a “mama’s boy” but that’s hardly proof of hard sexuality. Attila the Hun was decidedly heterosexual, with a penchant for virgins, but he lived with his mum in the same bumpy wagon until she dropped dead of exhaustion somewhere on the Asian steppes. In the movie, Tolson fusses over Hoover, straightening his tie and even occasionally
holding his hand when nobody’s around. Photographs of the period show them at their ease side-by-side in natty suits. In one scene, Hoover goes to his mum’s bedroom after her death and tries on one of her dresses before ripping it off and bursting into tears. Of course, whether this happened in real life is a moot point.
pleasure as well as business. Yet there is circumstantial evidence that Hoover would never dare risk a gay affair. He was continually shadowed by FBI men throughout his career. One might think that at least one agent might have talked later of the relationship with Tolson. But none ever did, in public anyway. It also seems
FBI director Hoover (left) with life-long companion Tolson
The case that Hoover was gay – and it matters only because of his anti-gay policies at the FBI – is in the Scottish sense of the term “not proven”. Certainly there were rumours during the second world war. Diplomats back then claimed Hoover wore perfume and fussed over afternoon tea “like an old woman”. Truman Capote dubbed Hoover and Tolson “Johnny and Clyde” and Dorothy Parker joked that Hoover chased men for
unlikely that Hoover, with so many enemies, would dare risk picking up young men at parties or on the street. It’s even more doubtful that Hoover might have cross-dressed at gay orgies. All we can say is that, if he did, he miraculously escaped detection. Not a single authentic photo. No one signed affidavit by any male who had a casual affair. Not one definitive attempt at blackmail. Not a word in the News of the World.
But the rumours persist. It has been argued that Hoover was indeed being blackmailed by the mafia which explains why the FBI director never ordered a serious investigation into Casa Nostra. Interesting but just speculation. A former model, Luisa Stewart, claims she vividly remembered the two FBI men holding hands in Hoover’s limousine. What a pity cell phones weren’t around in the 1950s. As Tom Leonard has argued in his review of the new film, whether Hoover was gay or not, he was certainly weird. He had a fascination with the child star Shirley Temple and, for her 21st birthday, gave her a tear gas gun disguised as a fountain pen. Hoover also had a morbid interest in violent death and even kept a copy of bank robber John Dillinger’s death mask outside his office. All that is for sure is that both Hoover and Tolson took their gay secrets, if there were any, to the grave. For my money, I rather think Hoover may have been asexual, that is not able to experience sexual attraction or feelings as most people do. Maybe that’s why he allowed Tolson to paint his toe nails when they were on holiday in Florida. But, then again, you can’t believe everything you read in the newspapers.

5 Things You Can Do To Cheat-Proof Your Marriage Marriage is rarely easy, indeed it’s one of the oxymorons of life. It’s both beautiful and fun when well-nurtured, but can be very ugly and grueling if you ignore it. So if you are married and you love your spouse, your life and your marriage, then you must take some simple steps to make sure that you make as much effort as possible to keep it a happy and stable marriage, as well as keeping the fun in it alive. So we’ve come up with five great ways by which you can nurture your marriage and most importantly not ruin it by one of you having an affair! 1. Make Sure You’re His Best Friend Make sure that you have many common connections in life, as the more that you have then the less likely your partner is going to treat you as though you’re not there. By always being his best friend, it will help you both to share a lot both good and bad, from having hobbies to do together, to you knowing all that is going on with his work. Also make sure that he knows all about you and your life, as he will then have much more to lose if he hurts you. By doing this it will make it so that he is much less likely to stray away. 2. Keep Being Interested And Support Him As the years pass by, both of you, like many people, can begin to take each other for granted. Don’t let this happen to you, and make sure you listening to each another. Essentially you need to make sure that what matters to your partner also matters to you as well. The key to doing this is to pay attention to each other and always acknowledge one another. This will ensure that neither of you looks for any comfort with anyone else. 3. Keep Varying Your Sex Life Quite often couples or partners who have been together for some time will say that they find their sex life can be boring, so ensure that you keep trying to “spice it up” and keep getting pleasure with your partner. Why not try making love in different locations as well as just trying different positions, even varying the time of day you make love can help. Also try and remember to be playful and spontaneous, and be anything but predictable. 4. Touch Him Often It’s vital that you try to be casually affectionate, just as much as it is for you to be passionate in the appreciation that you show each other at appropriate times. Make sure you do this by holding hands, giving each other back rubs, cuddling each other, and snuggling up in bed before you go to sleep. Doing all of these sorts of things can make the world of difference to keeping your marriage going strong, and they will also greatly help to alleviate your worries that anything is wrong. Also, by touching him regularly, it makes it much harder for him to feel distant from you, like someone can feel if you rarely touch him. 5. Hang Out With Your In-Laws Whilst visiting the shops with your mother-in-law might not sound like your idea of fun, however spending plenty of time with his parents is a very good way to help contribute towards stopping any cheating in your marriage. A research in the journal “Perspectives on Sexual & Reproductive Health” has shown that when people get along well with their partners parents, statistically they are not as likely to stray from their partners. This is because infidelity is often the byproduct of feeling that something in your relationship is missing, and so when your partners’ family both welcome and accept you then you are not so likely to cheat on your partner, as your relationship is carrying an extra layer of support, which develops your overall closeness with your partner. Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees First off, our March golf schedule is now posted on our Facebook page so you might want to get a jump and get signed up for our road trip to Kabinburi for an overnighter on the 23rd. Another good turnout saw eight groups hit the road for Green Valley. It’s a shame about the roadworks causing such chaos but in a few months it will all be back to normal…I think. One good thing is that the construction on those toll booths seems to have come to a standstill. The Sweeney had a good day and 35 got Stevie third on the podium. Eternal bridesmaid (but in the frame once more) Alan Rothwell bettered his cap with 38 points for second. He’s making a career out of this game! Our old pal the Z-Man joined us and showed the regulars how the game is played with a big red 40 circled at the top of his scorecard to claim the win. Martin is a regular at Siam so maybe these greens were a bit easy for the 14 handicapper! Nice shootin’, bud. I had to buy Mark Wood a drink as his birdie on the Caddy Smile near pin gave him the required “2” for a bevvie of choice back at The Club.
times booked and chose the 6,340 yard white tees for the scramble. Our first group teed off at 10:10 am and the last of the groups came in at 4:30 pm so it turned into an 11-hour day with traffic on the way back. The course was in really good condition and weather was a bit warm but beautiful. The lower handicapped teams seemed to rule the roost and the podium was full of Pattaya’s best. I thought for a minute about going to the hundredths for the handicaps, and in retrospect should have, as the winners tied at 65.3! The reason for this trip was for me ol’mate Darren Stanton who had some lads coming over from Oz and he wanted to show them Wangjuntra. They were well impressed but trust Dazza to go out and win the darn thing! With his mate Mick Neyland, they tied with Sean McHugh (Yep, that’s Johnnie’s nephew.) and his

A slightly reduced but still healthy nineteen golfers met at BJ's Lodge for good eats and ride assignments. Today we headed out to Treasure Hill – an interesting layout and tough test. Despite some construction
on the way we arrived in time to get some putts in before teeing off. With a 1,150 baht price including cart, many elected to ride this day even though the weather wasn't so hot. Treat yourself sometimes! The course was in pretty good condition, although the lack of recent rain is starting to show, and TH suffers from that unique Pattaya malady of cutting the fairway too short when the underlying surface doesn't support it. Mountain Shadow is at a great price point and as a local it can be recommended. If I were flying 16 hours to get here, there would be other courses higher on the list. Boy was it windy out here today! Gusts up to 30 mph protected those quick greens and made for some laughable scoring. Having a 29 and being in the money was a shocker for some! Dandy Dan Dietz and Fred Birch were the two blokes with raised eyebrows and smiles on their faces and were happy to collect some handsome man vouchers from Capt. Dave. The Mayor of New York took sole third behind his Wangjuntra partner Kenny Aihara and Rob Taylor, both on 32,who were the winners. It is just too long of a day to drive two hours out there, play a round and then drive two hours or more back to Pattaya, even when somebody else is driving. The hotel rooms here are quite nice, very large but basic and all are clean and comfortable. You must bring your own nightlife, and the game room has a big TV, pool table and foosball in a log cabin motif. By nine o’clock you will be knackered anyway. A two-man scramble was on the cards for today and that is the perfect format for this crazy course. The Highlands track is spectacular and truly a one of a kind design, but offers certain challenges that would take the wind out of your sails playing a standard comp. We had 18 teams (36 golfers) and nine tee

The sister to Mountain Shadow, this course is remembered by the three tall condo towers looming over the clubhouse and visible from most holes. There are 27 holes here and it is an enjoyable track. Today was a lovely day for golf, clear skies and that wind we had earlier had died down to a nice breeze. Scoring was good. Ishi and Zed both managed to hit that 40 mark and Freddy Birch came good for third place as well. TH are notoriously difficult, and the pin positions this day were extra punishing. After last week's scorefest at Bangpakong, would the confidence hold over? No way! A-Flight (0-18): Treasure Hill was the winner this day with no one getting to handicap, but someone has to be first. Mashi Kaneta (c/h 15) tied for best score of the day with 35 points. Way to hang in there, Mashi! Next was Landis Brook (10) with 32 on countback over Richard Kubicki (15) with the same. B-Flight (19+): Dave Cooper (22) continued his amazing roll by winning B-Flight with 35 points, followed by Gorden Clegg (34) and Carole Kubicki (27) each with 32. Gerry Arthur bids a fond farewell! by Peter Grey Pleasant Valley As we assembled at the Swan all golfers showed up enthusiastically with eager anticipation on playing that great golf course Pleasant Valley. The discount pricing that was on offer made it very worthwhile. One would say that it’s been about nine months since we last journeyed here! A couple of late pull outs dropped the field down to 20 which I have to say was a shame as this is a great course. The course was in good nick sometimes renowned for having a bit too much water on fairways, but there is no criticisms that you can put on this course. Fairways were lush, greens were true and generally speaking caddies were good as well. Scores were good but could have been a little better. We went from the front tees, with the fairways having some run; this suited both the big hitters and the not so big hitters, resulting in a very smart choice for the day. Gerry Arthur in his last outing this trip showed a clean pair of heels and his 36 points put him ahead of the rest. Second spot went to the countback with JC Lhoste winning the countback from Steve Younger. Fourth and fifth also went to the countback with Martin Todd taking fourth from Dave Maw.
Back at the Swan, we welcomed back JC Lhoste, and said goodbye to Terry Farmer Payne, Andy Zwart, Drew McGaw and Gerry Arthur. All returning to their respective homes. D-For was let off his chain and was free to collect much needed funds to help the less fortunate of Pattaya and surrounding areas. All donations are gratefully accepted. Treasure Hill Another perfect sultry day greeted us, and with an easier than normal bus trip, we teed up off the yellow markers before scheduled time. Probably the first time that we have witnessed Treasure Hill a little on the dry side. Still playing at a very good price this course is still worth the journey. Once again, our compliments are extended to the management of Treasure Hill GC who oversee a fantastic course and have made it available until the end of August at the very good rate of 1,050 baht including g/f, caddie and cart. Well done indeed! With a small field we played one flight only with J.C Lhoste playing to win his first game at the Swan. His 36 points (with 20 from the back 9) gave him the nod (via the countback system) from Mike Johns. Another countback separated 3rd and 4th with Alex Field getting the nod over Sal Brizzi. Results: 1st - J. C Lhoste (28) 36 points c/b

Crystal Bay (Stableford) This course has always been a bit special to me. I have played all the major courses many times and all the courses here are great, but for a few years this course was in such prime condition that it outshone the others. Whilst this is just my own personal view, I believe many others remember this course when it was at its best. Sadly some years ago it started to go downhill. The fairways started to get the weed type grass, into it, and the greens started to become like a patchwork green quilt of many colours. The whole course went downhill as did the changing rooms, and the restaurant also showed deterioration that was indeed sad. Cold showers were not unusual. On this day, I was interested to see how the course was playing and how the whole set up was getting on. Well it was a mixed bag. We played the C nine first and it was not in prime condition. The fairways were patchy and the greens were, in my opinion, not at all good. The greens were still a patchwork and mottled if still green. You had to pass over many colours to hit the hole. Then onto the B nine and it was a whole different game. The fairways
Flight winners
were a bit bare, but then so are most courses at present, but the greens were totally different, at least they seemed one colour and seemed fast and true. I seem to remember the B nine was closed for some time while it was refurbished. Not a bad job. This is a great place to go, with good rates, and some good scores, but I cannot help but remember how good this course can be. At least when we got back to the changing room we had some hot showers and some nice white towels. With the nice polished floor, no carpet, in the restaurant it felt good and the food was well priced and tasty. So back to home base. Soon into the results the scores were quite good. In the A flight, zero to 18, the winner
was Brian Parish with 39 points ahead of a countback on 38 points that saw John Davis in second, Landis Brooks in third and Brian Gabe just losing out. In the B flight the winner was Carole Kubicki with 38 points ahead of Gordon Clegg in second with 37 points and George King in third with 36 points. Best front nine was Brian Gabe with 20 points, on countback from Don Carmody, and back nine was Richard Kubicki with 19 points. Then it was time for going home and straight to bed. And if you believe that you will believe the moon is made of green cheese. T.T.F.N. Near pin: George King, John Davis, Richard Kubicki and Carole Kubicki
“The Don” Richardson wins monthly mug! by Cassa Plutaluang Two buses and some cars headed to The Big Navy course loaded with enthusiastic golfers, ready to test their metal against the challenging north and west courses. Pre game comments were subdued, both enroute and in the locker room, as minds
were already focusing on their individual game plans. One of the oldest players in the group today certainly kept his cool and used his mental stability to fall over the line ahead of the second placed player and way ahead of the rest of the field. challenging at the best of times, but with fair pricing, it is worth the time to take on. Martin Todd was the elected captain for today’s stroke round, and he had the field play off the white tees with drop zones in play. The signature “Lighthouse” par three 3rd hole “drop zone”, behind the green, was utilized by three players in this scribe's post. With all electing to putt up the face of the green and take on the down slope to the pin on the other side, Steve Younger managed to salvage a bogey, Tom McMahon sent his ball over the green into the water on the other side, for his second wet ball on this hole, but taking the cake was Glenn Smith sending another three balls into the depths to follow his wet tee shot! Not to be outdone, one player had 16 on a par 3! So back to the oldest player in the group today. Senior golfer Don Richardson (14) played smart golf to take out the February Monthly Mug award with 73 nett. He was closely followed by the French Connection, Patrick Poussier (26) with 74 nett. Third spot was a count back between visitor G Cho (10) and, not seen playing for a few months, Stu Rifkin (16) who ended up with fourth position overall with nett 78. Results: (One grade 0 – 36 handicaps)

You & Your Pets
This dog’s for you The rewards of pet ownership are many and varied—everything from companionship and affection to improved immune system, reduced depression, and even lower blood pressure. We covered some of these points in our January 1 column, leaving some readers with the question: what type of pet should I adopt? However, others immediately decided that a dog would be a perfect addition to their household. Leading to a different question: What kind of dog? The answer to that question is: what kind of person are you? If you’re an outdoors type you probably want a canine companion that shares your joy. Just about every dog loves to get out and about, but breeds that adore long daily walks or vigorous exercise tend to be mediumlarge breeds, including Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Doberman
Pinschers, Rottweilers, Irish and English Setters, Weimaraners, Border Collies, most Pointers, German Shepherds, and Dalmatians. If the extent of your al fresco ventures is limited to a daily walk along Jomtien or Pattaya Beach, a Golden Retriever or Portuguese water dog would love to go with you. Make sure your water-loving dog doesn't get dehydrated, sunburned, or drink salt water, and never leave your pup alone near water. Got kids? Virtually any breed will be a great companion for a child, but some breeds are particularly known for their love of children from beagles and boxers for little kids to dachshunds for gentle, older kids, and Labrador Retrievers and Saint Bernards to protect and play with children of all ages. If you live in an apartment or a condo, you may want a dog that
doesn't tend to bark and who needs only moderate exercise during short walks around the neighborhood. Think English Toy Spaniels, Bedlington Terriers, or Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Basenjis don’t bark (they make low crowing sounds), but they are energetic. Other breeds known to have a quiet temperament include Greyhounds and English Sheepdogs, but they may not work in a confined space. Not-so-quiet apartment dogs include a Havanese, Affenpinscher, and Chihuahua. Then there’s the emotional question: yours and theirs. If you have a lot of love and affection to give, opt for a pup that thrives on human companionship. Think Pomeranian, Chinese crested, French bulldog, or toy poodle. For a dog that loves your attention and is a good watchdog too, consider a Beagle, Bloodhound, or American Cocker Spaniel. Not so needy? More independent breeds may be a better fit, particularly if you lead a busy life. Such breeds include Alaskan Malamutes, Borzoi (Russian Wolfhounds), and Chinese Shar-Peis. Finally, for those who tend to socialize or are looking for a love connection, you probably crave a canine confederate who likes to go places, loves to meet new people, and doesn’t tend to bite strangers or friends. The Golden and Labrador Retriever along with Setters rank at the top of the list for attracting members of the opposite sex and are friendly companions. Stay clear of pit bulls.
Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.
Gott segne dich Is your cat sneezing? Like people, cats are vulnerable to allergies, sinus irritation, and upper respiratory infections. Symptoms may include sneezing and a runny nose. Sneezing in cats is most often caused by a viral infection picked up from being around other infected cats. Other causes of sneezing may include inhaled allergens, grass (the green variety, as in lawns), or even tumors. If sneezing continues for more than a few days, check with your vet.
Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Sleepyheads
These 3 lovely kittens, 2 boys and a girl, were found on Christmas day and had only just been born. As you can see they have grown up to be big and strong. In this photo they are having a well deserved nap after spending most of the morning tearing around the house.
Holly
Holly is the mum of the kittens in the previous photo. We found her and her babies on Christmas day it was clear that they had just been born. Since being with us she has put on a lot of weight and is now a very friendly girl. By the time you read this article she will neutered and vaccinated.
Shelley
Shelley is a very friendly girl who loves helping in the garden and with the housework. She is a little shy though and will need a bit of time to get used to a new home and owner. Once she gets to know you though she will never leave your side.
Mr. Tibbs
This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now. He just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.
Cat Corner Tip
Going to the Dogs... I wonder what goes through his mind when he sees us peeing in his water bowl.
~Penny Ward Moser
A lost Dachshund was found swallowed whole in the stomach of a giant catfish in Berlin. Cats are extremely sensitive to vibrations. They are said to detect earthquake tremors 10 or 15 minutes before humans can.
Don’t let Tabby become Tubby How much food does your cat need? It depends on a variety of factors, some of which you might not expect. For example, is your cat an indoor or outdoor animal? Has your cat been spayed or neutered? Both affect your cat's dietary requirements. But don’t guess. Ask your vet for advice. He or she will determine your cat's ideal weight and daily calorie count. But as you may have noticed already among local veterinarians, you cannot wait for the doc to volunteer such information. Be proactive. Ask specifically about your cat's weight, recommended foods and portion sizes, feeding schedule, etc. Then stick to those guidelines to ensure your cat’s healthy weight. If your cat gets fat, you’ve got a big problem.
