he article in the UK Daily Mirror last month, which claimed without evidence that one in five women in Pattaya were prostitutes, has certainly ruffled some feathers in senior Thai bureaucracy. Normally, criticism of Thailand in the foreign popular press is ignored, so what is different this time is not clear. Perhaps it was the wide discussion of the article by Thais in the social media, commenting that the Daily Mirror was not telling them anything new. Or maybe the military-appointed Pattaya City Hall management felt it had to act. Pattaya Police Chief Colonel Apichai Krobpetch, rightly disputed the dubious Daily Mirror statistics and denied that Pattaya is a world-class sex resort. It is certainly true that Pattaya is no longer the single-purpose, bachelor hot spot it once was. The city and its environs are now awash with five-star condos and hotels, excellent restaurants and a range of leisure activities to cater for families. Water parks were not built for sex-hungry visitors. The former red-light districts have either been bulldozed for redevelopment or have been toned down. Open child prostitution in clubs is now largely a thing of the past, owing to sustained police crackdowns and prosecutions, and adult sex shows are harder to find than they once were. Night-time districts such as Walking Street and Sunee Plaza are nowhere near as popular as they once were and both have vacant properties for rent and lease.

Airbnb has enabled women all over the world to earn over 350 billion baht

Airbnb celebrated its global community of women hosts during International Women’s Day on March 8. Since the company’s founding in 2008, more than a million women have shared their homes with travellers, earning over 350 billion baht in the process. Major progress has been made in advancing economic opportunities for women over the past several decades; the sharing economy is one such variable that can be leveraged to have a positive impact on women. Through supplemental income earned, Airbnb estimated that: Over 50,000 women around the world have used the additional funds

to support entrepreneurship activities, be it launching a business or adding to the pool of investment capital for a new business they’re starting. Women hosts use their supplemental income to support home ownership, especially single mothers. The majority of senior women hosts (defined as 60 years and older) are empty nesters who open their homes to make ends meet; the average senior host earns just THB 210,000 a year, which aids in their retirement. In 2016 alone, over 200,000 female hosts worldwide earned at least 175,000 baht each through hosting on Airbnb. The number of women hosts on Airbnb in Thailand has grown 43 times

since 2012, and the typical female host in Indonesia earns approximately 88,795 baht per year. For many, this money is providing vital assistance – whether it’s to help pay bills, pursue passions or support entrepreneurship endeavours. Robin Kwok, Airbnb countr y manager for Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, says, “Airbnb is home to a massive, rapidly growing number of women hosts who are connecting with guests, each other, and their local communities. We are incredibly proud to support our worldwide community of female hosts and to play a role in helping them achieve greater financial, professional, and social empowerment.”

The Royal Thai Government recently approved the extension of the visa fee waiver and reduction for visas on arrival for tourists from 21 countries. The original scheme, established on 30 November, last year, will now be extended until August 31, this year. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “Thailand’s tourism sector is thriving but with extra government support; such as this visa waiver and reduction scheme means we can remain the top destination in the region. By continuing this policy will help motivate visitors from these countries to discover Amazing stories in Amazing Thailand.” The extension of the visa incentives for tourists for a further six months was

proposed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and was approved at the weekly Cabinet meeting earlier this month. The new period, lasting until August 31, will mean that travellers applying for tourist visas at Royal Thai Embassies or Thai Consulates abroad will not have to pay any fees for entry visas, while the fees for visas on arrival (VoA) have been reduced from 2,000 baht to 1,000 baht per person. The new regulation will be effective for passport holders from 21 countries and territories including Andorra, Bulgaria, Bhutan, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Pattaya crackdown intensifies any premises which appear to offer prostitution and/or drugs. One of the downsides of this approach could be that vice is driven underground, perhaps making even more use of the social media for contact purposes. Pattaya Today approached a number of foreign tourists and expats in Walking Street and Sunee Plaza to obtain some reaction. A group of Brits drinking in a bar on Walking Street said they had been coming to Pattaya for years, but explained it was no longer the fun experience they once felt here. “The girls are very expensive, the pound has collapsed and the last thing you want on holiday is a crowd of police harassing you at midnight,” said Ken Lee. At Sunee Plaza, a gay bar district, a German bar owner told us, “You can see for yourself there are lots of forrent notices here and most of the bars that remain are barely making ends meet.” He added, “Sure, there are gay tourists still coming to Pattaya, but fewer Europeans and more Japanese and Chinese.” As regards Sunee Plaza’s former reputation as a hangout for pedophiles, “You

won’t see a single underage boy around here these days.” The Pattaya police chief has criticized foreign businessmen, especially Brits, for operating sex-orientated businesses. However, our research suggested that Thais owned most of the bars and clubs. It has already become chancy for foreigners to work in the entertainment industry as it is increasingly difficult to obtain a work permit from the Labor Ministry for this type of employment, coupled with those regular checks by the Immigration Police. It is clearly government policy to try and change Pattaya’s seedy image. But it is possible to throw the baby out with the bath water. Pattaya in 2017 is a good deal less seedy than it was in 1997 or even in 2007. Moreover, there are many other problems to be addressed: street crime, traffic congestion, boilerroom scams, pollution and a variety of rip-offs plaguing the general public. Pattaya has experienced many transformations since it started out as a recreational destination for US troops in the 1960s and 1970s. By all means clean up Sin City on a rational basis. But for the authorities to act too heavyhandedly - as though sex tourism was the sole issue in the city’s future - could turn out to be a wrong turning for all sorts of reasons. Nobody wants a ghost town.

Lose Weight, it’s great

Saudi Arabian national Alhazemt Salamah Obaidallahk was stabbed in the arm by fellow countryman Khalif Khalaf Aljameeli. Dr. Piyaporn Thipayarat, M.D., assistant director of Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, opened a forum on weight loss at the hospital’s Surgery Center. Yet another prostitution crackdown on Beach Road netted the arrest of 20 Thai and foreign women. Police also found several foreigners who had overstayed their visas and will be charge with working without a permit.

Happy Zones to protect tourists

The “Happy Zone” will be launched in all tourist destinations beginning with Pattaya. Police Col. Apichai Krobpetch, Pattaya police chief, said the national police ordered implementation here to achieve tourist safety, indicating that bad press abroad was a motivating factor. International media has focused on Pattaya as the sex capital of the world, noting that it also has one of the highest crime rates amongst tourist destinations. Initially there will be four “Happy Zones” in Pattaya. The first stretches from the Wat Chaimongkol intersection

to King Café Restaurant on Walking Street; the second takes in the White Inn Hotel to the Marine Discoteque; the third encompasses the area from the Marine Plaza Hotel to the Pattaya 100 Co. Ltd. (on Third Road), and the fourth reaches from Pratumnak Road Soi 16 to Anytime Café on Beach Road. Different police agencies will monitor each one between 8 pm and 6 am with the intention of deterring crime and underage sex slavery. Apichai also encouraged business owners to install CCTV.

Every year, the Bangkok International Rugby Tens attract fans from around the world for a weekend of fun and games in the heart of Bangkok. W i t h m o re t h a n 5 , 0 0 0 attendees, the 2017 event raised more funds and went above and beyond the organizers’ expectations. Proceeds go to the NakSuu children’s’ charity, founded by organizer Eddie Evans, a veteran rugby player. The charity provides Bangkok slum children with free rugby training and helps them develop life skills and values so they have a chance to make a positive change in their lives.

This year’s champions, the Singapore Barbarians, beat the New Zealand Legends in an exhilarating final game. After their victory, they spent the evening celebrating together with the other teams and the event sponsors including Hooters, Four Points By Sheraton Bangkok, RockTape, RugbyPass, Singapore Rugby, Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok Patana School, APAC Assistance, Health Box, Allied Pickfords, X-treme Sports Gear, Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn, Nestle Pure Life, S5 Agency, Flow House, Spectrum Optix, Nexoptic and Midas PR Group, their PR partner.

Billboards can be dangerous

City Hall representative Apichat Weerapal warned that unauthorized billboards can cause safety concerns, especially on Second Road, Central Pattaya and North Pattaya. He said some billboards were reportedly “on sidewalks and hung on electric poles.”

All New MINI Clubman Cooper S

The Mature MINI Many MINIs but only one sixdoor, five-seater – the CLUBMAN. Stylish, practical and German built. Turbocharged. Goes like a bat out of hell. MINI has grown up. In Thailand by John K. Lindgren the current model Editor-in-chief: range includes the carsanook.com regular three-door and five-door hatchbacks, the convertible (cabriolet) and the countryman. Now, there is a new MINI station wagon, the largest, most practical and sophisticated MINI with those iconic, eye-catching retro split rear doors and a top-notch interior outfitted with premium materials, high-tech features and cutting-edge power train technology. Design: The prolonged roofline and a longer wheelbase displays

elongated station wagon style. Yet, its aerodynamic architecture and bonnet scoop indicate that it's just as intent as ever on carving up some mischief on the highways and byways. They say the devil is in the details. Case in point the cool illuminated shark fin antenna cum beacon on the roof. For personalization there are 11 outstanding exterior colors to choose from. Our tester came in striking Pure Burgundy Metallic. Style impressions: Front view: the trademark large MINI circular LED headlights and that mighty hexagonal radiator grille. Side view: long wheelbase and delightfully short overhangs. The rear: the split doors (barn doors) with double windscreen wipers. And the oversized, stylish, elongated horizontal LED taillights. “J'adore!”, the Frenchman would say. Interior: English elegance, sophistication, hence the name Clubman. Cross punch pure burgundy leather, bolstered and powered front

seats for pilot and passenger. More MINI design DNA: the circular accents all over the cockpit. Like the huge color changing disk-shaped infotainment and navigation center with 8.8-inch high-resolution screen boasting a 20 gigabyte server. For the audiophiles a high-end Harman Kardon concert sound system. The new center console frees up space by ditching the traditional handbrake for an electronic one. The rear is accessed by two fullsized doors with ample space for up to three passengers with generous head and leg room. Storage area? 360 liters. Not enough? Rear seats folded. Voila! A whopping 1,250 liters. Easy to load and offload thanks to a head-turning kick-open split doors comfort access system. Powertrain: Underneath the hood

(bonnet) lurks the state-of the-art BMW engineered 2-liter twin-power, petrol turbo engine mated to a quick shifting, seamless eight-speed automatic transmission providing front-wheel traction with maximum grip. The Clubman is built for proactive driving. The rear boasts sporty twin tailpipes with an intoxicating exhaust note especially in the “Sport” mode. The Clubman runs on 18-inch cool black alloy wheels with low-profile run-flat tyres. Driving experience: No have Stop/ Start button! But a cool MINI aircraft inspired red toggle switch ignition. Fire up the two-liter engine and engage the drive mode selector: Sport, Mid, and Green. I choose the Sport option and the red circular ring around MINI Center Instrument lights up striking bright red. Once you push the throttle. The FUN starts! BMW calls it “Sheer driving pleasure”. Yes, the Clubman is bigger and longer. But, it still drives like a MINI with that distinctive go-kart feel that will put a smile on your face. Trust me! On Pattaya Today Life & Leisure Bangkok-Chonburi-Sattahip test drive the MINI Clubman Cooper S performed flawlessly regarding acceleration, braking and overall handling. And those super powerful LED headlights to light up dark upcountry roads for safe driving. Did you know that the first Mini aka Austin Mini designed by Sir Alec

Issigonis, launched in 1960 had no radio but three ashtrays. Mr Issigonis said, “no need for radio – but we do smoke!” The engine was a dinky 850 cc Austin motor. Today 2017 the original concept still remains: Wide track, long wheelbase, short overhangs. Put them all together and you've got pure MINI driving excitement. Verdict & Price: More style, space and practicality plus German engineering with kick-ass power! MINI Clubman comes in four petrol and one diesel version. Base model Clubman Cooper price: 2.38 million baht, Clubman Cooper Diesel 2.68 million baht. The top spec MINI Clubman Cooper S Hightrim with panorama glass roof at 3.28 million baht. Our test drive MINI Clubman Cooper S price: 3.08 million baht. For Pattaya residents a test drive is recommended at German Auto Pattaya: BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad multibrand showroom in Na Jomtien. MINI Clubman Cooper S Price: 3,080,000 baht Engine: 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo Petrol Power: 192 hp Torque: 280 Nm Transmission: Front-wheel drive 8-speed automatic Average fuel consumption: 16.9 km/l Top speed: 228 km/h www.mini.co.th

HAVANA BAR’S MONTHLY WINE EVENT Showcases Stonefish Wines from the Hunter Valley Havana Bar is located on the ground floor of Holiday Inn Pattaya Bay Tower, Pattaya Beach Road. This lounge bar is classy and upscale reconstructing the Cuban bars of the fascinating ’30s and ’40s when Hemmingway created the now famous daiquiris and the iconic mojito cocktail. Soaring wooden ceilings, deep mahogany-coloured leather sofas, comfy easy chairs, black and white photos from the era, huge Cuban-style chandeliers all contribute to the mood emulating a watering hole where Papa Hemingway would have been happy to while away a few hours. This bar is plush, sophisticated and unique. We were there for an evening of slurping and sipping the wines from the award-winning wine company Stonefish International from the Hunter Valley in Australia. Founded in 2000 by Peter Papanikitas, the winery strives to produce wine that exhibits all the attributes that make viniculture in Australia a global phenomenon. The vinous event set sail with canapés and a glass of bubbling Stonefish Cuvee Brut NV. The pouring of this crisp, clean sparkler was the perfect opener to be enjoyed with the selection of creative canapés and short bites that Executive Chef Jason Large and his brigade had prepared. These included the likes of a delightful grilled salmon and an innovative grilled pineapple and salad taco. Round 2 highlighted a Stonefish Sauvignon Blanc sourced from the fruits of the St. Margaret River displaying an appealing mix of melon, pineapple and white peach. Probably my favourite white wine of the evening which we enjoyed with Sloane’s chorizo and bacon wrapped skewers, smoked salmon, sour cream and spring onion blinis. Round 3 produced another excellent white variety namely the Stonefish Chardonnay. Executive Chef Jason Large and his brigade had excelled themselves with a selection of creative canapés of Aussie style pulled pork, rare roast beef with cumin cream cheese, grilled zucchini and red pepper and a star black pudding with green apple, crab salad and crispy ham. It was a pleasure to trawl the tables enjoying the global cuisine generated from this inventive kitchen. Stonefish Merlot followed with tastes of ripened berries and subtle whispers of spice, vanilla and oak and proved

the wine of choice for both Mick and me that evening which we enjoyed with the generous selection of cheese, breads, sticks and grissini together with premier olives, cornichons and baby pickled onions. The last two rounds offered Stonefish Cabernet Sauvignon and a Stonefish Reserve Shiraz. The Cabernet Sauvignon displaying a rich fragrant bouquet of ripe fruit and earthy aromas which made perfect friends with more of the artisan cheeses and brioche bread while the elegant rich and jammy Shiraz gracefully brought down the curtain on our gleeful wining and dining. These wine tastings are staged monthly at B.990 and are excellent value for money and great fun affairs. Holiday Inn Pattaya hosts an enjoyable cordial evening with live music, happy friendly staff together with a posse of wine lovers who enjoy every drop of a goblet or two with great humour and conviviality. It’s certainly a fun evening. Although Havana is the signature bar/restaurant of Holiday Inn Pattaya, all food and drinks on their menu are inclusive of service charge and government tax. Happy Hour (offering two for one) runs from a convenient 7 till 9 pm. Overall the prices are in line with a quality bar/ restaurant and the diversity of their rums, single malts and Belgian beers are considerable, while wines are sourced from around the world and offer something for all pockets. The menu is eclectic: modern Italian meets cosmopolitan American in Asia. From pizzas, pasta, antipasti and salads through Asian noodles and Thai snacks to bar bites and burgers, it’s across-the-board cuisine sweeping the foodie favourites of visitors from around the world. The burger platters are huge. We challenge Godzilla and King Kong on one of their date nights to finish the Chicken BLT/burger (B.350); it’s massive, stacked with fried chicken breasts, crispy bacon, tomatoes, mayo and homemade tomato relish all served in a hefty bun and accompanied by Havana Bar’s onion rings and “fat chips”. Chunky fat fingers of potatoes, still in their skins, are fried to precision and seasoned with paprika, rosemary and garlic. These are fantastic and, in my view, definitely worth the extra calories! Other varieties include the classic all-American with Cheddar cheese, dill pickles, and a battered and fried

BENIHANA PRESENTS A SAKE EXTRAVAGANZA Who knew there are so many varieties of sake? The famous sake house of Kozaemon hosted a successful event where they presented nine of their most popular varieties while Benihana Pattaya staged a culinary abundance of dishes prepared by their talented young chefs. Japan’s national drink has played a central role in Japanese life and culture for the past 2,000 years. It is sometimes referred to as “rice wine” but the brewing process is more similar to beer converting starch to sugar for the fermentation process. Undiluted sake contains 18 to 20 percent ABV (although this is often lowered to 15 percent by adding water prior to bottling). This rich brewing tradition is probably one reason why the Japanese love their sake so much, so where better to hold this unique sake tasting event than at Benihana, Pattaya’s favourite teppanyaki steakhouse. So it was with much anticipation and enthusiasm that Mick and I headed out to the second floor of the Royal Garden Plaza’s lifestyle mall to enjoy this rare occurrence. Benihana’s beginnings began with Yunosuke Aoki, a Samurai descendant and entertainer, who along with his wife, Katsu, opened a small coffee shop in Tokyo. The shop was named “Benihana” (red flower in Japanese) after a red safflower that grew in the streets. His eldest son had the idea to combine Japanese food and entertainment and subsequently the first restaurant opened in New York in 1964 and the Benihana that we know today was born. Here in Pattaya Benihana is under the auspices of the AVANI Pattaya Resort and Spa. Its reputation is based on their teppanyaki style of cooking: teppan meaning “steel grill” and yaki “broiled”. Their chefs receive 16 weeks of intensive training before the final accolade of a red kerchief is awarded to confirm their proficiency. Interaction between chef and guest is positively encouraged and the culinary cabaret is great fun, natural and bodacious. Our welcome sake was a Junmai Umeshu Beni Nankoubai or plum liquor which provided an elegant almost sweet-sour sensation for

AVANI Pattaya Resort & Spa Executive Chef Pongpisit preparing sushi frost

a refreshing curtain raiser to the evening enjoyed with sesame lavash, a thin crunchy Middle Eastern treat together with nori chips and some wasabi nuts. A glass of the most premium sake, Junmai Daiginjo was then served with the pairing of French oysters, larb tuna tartar and hamachi jalapenos which with their fusion characteristics made immediate friends. A selection of succulent sushi balls, takoyaki (octopus filled wheat balls) and salmon garnished sushi plus California and tamago maki rolls were disappearing at a rapid rate with the next sake, a fragrant Junmai Ginjo Bizen Omachi. However, the star of this course was sushi frost, soft tender salmon was served on a bed of meringue and then “dry iced” to perfect frostiness. The next offering was another Ginjo #20 Mino-Mizunami which we sipped and slurped with quite a few delicious chicken yakitori sticks liberally drenched in the sweet umami sauce. This course also included a delightful osuimono soup, a light fishy broth fashioned from dashi, water and sake and floated with a sweet poached prawn. The accompanying sake was a smooth Kirinzan which enhanced and complemented all the various flavours. The finale presented our master chef preparing us garlic fried rice and a teppanyaki premier quality beef. Knives (and eggs) were thrown, flipped, juggled, lobbed and pitched with skill resulting in a delicious bowl of rice and a perfectly grilled piece of beef before his wagon was ceremoniously wheeled to another table. Quite a performance and, from the appreciative ovations and cheers that emanated from the surrounding

areas, we were not the only ones enjoying the Benihana magic. Five more sakes followed (notes getting decidedly less legible now!) but our favourite, and one served warm was a Yamahai Junmai Banshu Yamada-Nishiki. Fermented in the traditional style with a pleasing aroma of nuts, it made an excellent partner with the richer flavours which followed. For instance, the teppanyaki burger, a standout butterfish with a sweet passion fruit sauce and the tenderest hibachi chicken with sesame seeds before concluding with teppanyaki marbled tenderloin and cream cheese accompanied by hibachi rice with garlic. The curtain was sweetly lowered with banana tempura served with ice cream and raspberry plus chocolate sauce. We had a “funtastic” evening, the food was top-notch, the sakes more than interesting and of course proved the perfect accompaniment to the Japanese cuisine. Benihana Pattaya scores on so many levels having created a totally distinctive ambiance where the preparation of the food is driven by the prowess and skill of its highly trained staff who not only produce the product but entertain, surprise and amuse along the way. It’s a culinary circus, a foodie playground and a piece of gastronomic theatre that hits all the right spots. Visit their website for full menu and prices. Muay Thai Clinch by Rory Coughlan

Muay Thai involves different techniques. It is a fighting art of contrition where strikes are exchanged by opposing practitioners. Almost all techniques used in Muay Thai involve the entire body movement, where the hip rotates with every kick, punch, elbow and block. One of such techniques which Muay Thai fighters try to master is clinching. Muay Thai clinching is described as grappling of the hands around the neck of the opponent during an offensive or defensive combat. This particular technique is used as an effective method to subdue the opponent or control the aggressiveness of the other fighter. The clinch technique is different from other martial art forms such as judo as it permits utilizing the knee techniques, punching, kicking and delivering elbows. Enabling the use of various attacking methods provide the boxer with the advantage of striking using the Muay Thai clinch. Muay Thai fighters are not separated when they clinch. Aside from using the knee and elbow techniques when they clinch stand-up grappling is also used. The Muay Thai fighter holds the opponent through the head, body, or neck. The fighter then presses his forearm on the collarbone of the opponent. The typical clinching technique in Muay Thai involves the moving of the head downward before releasing a throw. This can cause the opponent to lose balance by throwing them to the left or right. Three reasons why clinching techniques require the fingers not to be intertwined. 1. With the fighters wearing gloves when fighting in the ring, intertwining the fingers is no longer possible. 2. The front clinch involves pressing the head of the opponent downwards. This becomes easier if the hands are locked behind the back of the head instead of behind the neck. The arms should be putting as much pressure on the neck as possible. 3. A fighter may incur an injury to one or more fingers if they are intertwined and it becomes more difficult to release the grip in order to quickly elbow the opponent’s head. Variants of the clinch technique: • Arm Clinch. This technique requires one or both hands to control the inside of the defender’s arms and where the second hand, if free, is in the front clinch

position. The fighter will be able to control the opponent so he can apply a knee strike or throw. • Side Clinch. This technique requires one arm passing around the front of the defender with the attacker’s shoulder pressed into the defender’s arm pit and the other arm passing round the back which allows the attacker to apply knee strikes to the defender’s back or to throw the defender. • Low Clinch. This technique requires both controlling arms to pass under the defender’s arms, which is generally used by the shorter of two opponents. • Swan Neck. This technique requires one hand around the rear of the neck used to briefly clinch an opponent before applying a strike.

Eye appeal

Tropical Tips for Tourists…and Expats

Whether you’re in Pattaya on a brief holiday or enjoying Paradise forever as an expat, take care to avoid damaging your skin and eyes in the tropical sun and heat. The biggest mistake visitors and residents alike make is not applying enough sunscreen. To get the protection promised on the container, you need a healthy splash (about the size of a golf ball) for your body and a 10-baht-sized amount for your face. Reapply it every 2 hours. And don’t ignore those areas most people neglect: the ears, neck, and hands. Don't just get your face. Wearing sandals? Apply sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF 30 on the tops of your feet, too. Also, give yourself a little lead time: Put sunscreen on 15 minutes before going outdoors. With so many sunscreens to choose from, it’s best to think about your skin type and what you’ll do while wearing it. If you’re going to be active, look for water-resistant SPF 30. If you’re concerned about shine or greasy residue, try an oil-

free formula or one that contains micronized zinc. A spray is easiest to apply, but rub it in to make sure it’s spread evenly. Your lips need sun protection, too, so slip on a product with SPF 30 every morning. It might also help you prevent cold sores, since the sun's UV rays can trigger flare-ups. Save the lip shine for hot nights — glossy formulas make delicate skin more prone to sunburn. When choosing lipstick here in Pattaya, keep in mind that you’re in the tropics. Try a cooler shade. Orange lips are a summer trend, but one shade does not fit all. Instead of falling for your first orange crush, play with a few different shades to make sure the tone works with your skin color. If bold and bright isn’t your style, try a more subtle tinted balm or lip stain.

As we age, we are more prone to develop dark circles under our eyes. Not the temporary shadows or bags that appear after a few too many cocktails, but lingering discoloration as the skin around the eyes thins, exposing tiny, subcutaneous blood vessels. Sometimes these dark circles are inherited and sometimes, particularly among Thais and other Asians, they are pigmentary issues. Makeup can help conceal these dark circles. Choose a concealer that matches your skin tone. If the discoloration is faint, pick a liquid formula. For more prominent shadows, select a cream or cake concealer. Lightly pat the concealer on from the inner corner of your eye to just past the outer corner. As an option, visit a beauty clinic for treatment with intense pulse light (IPL). It destroys those pigment cells and smoothes the skin. A series of four IPL treatments is typically needed to see improvement. Skin lightening creams that contain hydroquinone or kojic acid may also diminish the darkness. Dark circles caused by extremely thin skin are difficult to treat. Eye creams that contain caffeine may help a bit because they constrict the underlying blood vessels. To help keep your eyes looking youthful, here are four things you can do short of surgery: * Don't smoke, and always apply a sunscreen or sun block around the eye area. Smoking and exposure to UV rays weaken collagen and cause premature wrinkling and sagging. * Apply a moisturizer to the eye area nightly. Almost any moisturizer will provide the hydration you need. * Add a prescription retinoic acid — the vitamin A cream—to your daily skin care regimen. It's the single best thing you can use to prevent wrinkles and reduce existing lines. * To calm puffy eyes, place cold spoons, slices of cucumbers, chilled tea bags, or even a package of frozen peas under your eyes. The cool temperatures — rather than any special properties of cucumbers, peas or tea bags — reduce swelling. And, yes, placing a hemorrhoid cream under your eyes might help get rid of puffs, too. But retinol eye cream might be more effective.

Drink Up! Healthy beauty comes from within, so drink plenty of water, especially while you’re in Pattaya where temperatures are high year round. Beauty bonus: Hydrated skin looks more youthful, because the extra liquid plumps up fine lines and wrinkles.

Get your daily fix of coffee, tea and water What do coffee, tea and plain drinking water have in common? They are the most enjoyed beverages in Thailand and around the world. And while everyone needs plenty of water every day, not everyone needs coffee or tea—unless you want to optimize your health. Elements in coffee and tea may help prevent a variety of health problems ranging from cancer and diabetes to Parkinson’s and heart disease. Coffee and green tea might help prevent breast and prostate cancers, while virtually any tea may protect you against cancer that affects the ovaries and stomach, thanks to their antioxidants (including polyphenols). Similarly, tea and coffee are linked to a lower chance of getting type 2 diabetes. Antioxidants in coffee help keep your blood sugar lower and more stable, the main challenge of diabetes, while those in tea may help your body process sugar in your blood. Both beverages also may help against Parkinson’s disease, which attacks the nerve cells in your brain and makes movement difficult. Some studies suggest that caffeine can ease early symptoms of Parkinson’s, while others show that drinking coffee and tea might help protect your brain from it in the first place. Alzheimer’s disease, like Parkinson’s, attacks your brain’s nerve cells (neurons); it can cause memory loss and changes in thought patterns and behavior. Coffee’s antioxidants may help protect neurons, and green

tea’s antioxidants may help prevent the clusters of proteins believed to cause the disorder. Meanwhile, although doctors once thought people with heart problems should cut down on caffeine, it now seems that coffee and tea may protect you from heart disease. In one study, people who drank three to five cups of coffee a day were less likely to have a buildup of calcium in the vessels that take blood to your heart muscle, thus lowering your chance of heart disease. The same may be true for strokes, which happen when blood is cut off

from a certain area of your brain. A cup of coffee or tea each day might lower your chances of having a stroke because coffee can ease inflammation and help control your blood sugar levels. And drinking black tea is linked to lower blood pressure, which can make you less likely to have a stroke. Worried about liver disease? Have a cuppa joe—or three. That’s about the number that may lower your odds of having chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Coffee has more than 100 different chemical compounds in it, and scientists are trying to figure

out what they do and how they might work together to help your liver. Finally, there is something called gallstones, which are tiny pieces of hardened cholesterol and other substances that form in your gallbladder. That small, pear-shaped organ near your belly helps with digestion. Left untreated, gallstones can cause serious pain and health problems. Coffee to the rescue. The brew can lower your chances of getting gallstones because it helps move fluid through your gallbladder and makes the cholesterol less likely to crystallize into gallstones.

Sure, there are other good reasons to drink coffee and tea—such as the pure enjoyment of the beverages and the social benefits of getting together with friends. Not to be overlooked is the fact that lowcalorie beverages like coffee and tea make it easier to lose weight instead of drinking sugary ones, and they can provide a satisfying pick-me-up. Just hold off on adding sugar and cream, and don’t overdo your intake of caffeine; it can make you anxious, make it hard to sleep, and make you less able to hold onto calcium, which can lead to bone fractures.

Thailand Property Awards 2017 Nominations are Open!

The Thailand Property Awards nominations for the Eastern Seaboard’s Best Condominium Development and Best Villa Development are being submitted now until June 30, with the nominated developments submitting entry forms until July 7. Eastern Seaboard site visits will be conducted from July 24 to August 4, with the Central and Regional panel judges’ final scoring meeting on August 9. Yes, once again we are quickly approaching the eagerlyawaited annual event that recognizes the residential sector’s leading real estate professionals, property developers, interior designers, and architects. Along with this year’s Best Villa and Best Condo Developments for the Eastern Seaboard, nominations and entries are also being made in national categories including Best Developer, Best Boutique Developer, Best Commercial Development (Retail), Best Commercial Development (Office), Best Commercial Development (Hotel), Best Residential Architectural Design, Best Residential Interior Design, Best Hotel Interior Design, Best Retail Architectural Design, Best Office Architectural Design, Best Hotel Architectural Design, Best Landscape Architectural Design, Best Green Development, Special Recognition in CSR and Special Recognition in Universal Design (a brand new category this year).

For more than 10 years this event has established itself as the highest symbol of achievement that a company or an individual can receive in Thailand’s residential, commercial, design and hospitality real estate industries. In order to avoid any concerns of favoritism, the organizers use a panel of independent judges, and the entire judging process is monitored by one of the world’s leading internal auditing firms, BDO Advisory Thailand--official supervisor of the event. Having said that, you might ask how these awards are decided and what is the process that produces the winners. The Thailand Property Awards central (Bangkok) and regional panel of judges are comprised of leading Thai professionals, i.e., real estate agents, appraisers, lawyers, architects, etc., who examine and score all nominees. In the Development Awards category, the central and regional judging panels examine and score each nominee and then submit their initial short-lists of five properties for each category to Paul Ashburn of BDO Advisory. Youth Focus

Teaching from heart to heart As teachers, we are dealing with fragile beings. With increased focus on curriculum development, meeting standards, collecting data and administration, sometimes it’s easy to forget that the best way to teach students is to connect with them as beings. Too often, I've heard teachers talk about how helpless they feel when it comes to reaching out to their students. I believe when students feel their teacher is a caring person, then the classroom becomes a happier place for everyone. This is one of the many reasons why I teach the way I do. For me, teaching is the best job. I enjoy every bit of it. It has its ups and downs but on the whole it's fulfilling when you help youngsters to leave school with decent grades and know they have a future. As a teacher, every day is a new day Unlike most careers, a teaching career provides the opportunity to inspire students, not only academically but personally as well. I enjoy connecting with my students, being part of their doing in the class. I remember a meeting I had with some of my students’ parents last year during a parent-teacher conference: They mentioned that their kids cannot not wait to come

to school and that they liked talking about what happened at school. The parents asked me what do I do different, my simple answer being – I connect with my students, or at least, I try my best to connect with them. How do I connect with them? I enjoy sitting on the mat with them when we read. When they do a colouring activity, I pick up a colour pencil and colour the same picture. Writing poems with them is my favourite. I have recently incorporated peer teaching more, and the students absolutely love it, they love being the “teacher” for a minute or two. This really gets my students involved and it also teaches them that there are many different ways to approach something simple like a maths problem – we all have our own way of doing things.

By Maddy Botha

Offering positive reinforcement, smiling, and listening to their concerns all help to gain students' trust and friendship. As teachers, it's important for us to understand that there is so much more to students than the life they lead in class. I realised that I have to also make technology work for me – seeing the day and age we live in, children of today are practically born with an electronic device in their hand. It sometimes scares me when I find out what kind of movies they have seen and how much time some of them spend in front of the computer. Teaching is one of those professions that keeps you on your toes and young at heart. It allows you to use your brain and continue learning each day, sometimes through a variety of professional development methods. Last but not least of all, I teach from the heart. For me, teaching is touching the lives of my students, making connections that will last a lifetime, and providing them with inspiration that will take them places in their lives. Maddy Botha is a Year 5 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School, Pattaya

Singapore International School of Bangkok launches new SISB campus in Thonburi Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB) is building a new campus in Thonburi, Bangkok. The new campus, Singapore International School Thonburi (SISB Thonburi) held a foundation stone laying ceremony last month, presided over by Payom Chinnawong, secretary general of Office of Private Education Commission, Ministry of Education, Thailand. SISB Thonburi is the first Singapore International School to be launched in Thonburi. The new campus spans eight-rai with a capacity for up to 750 students ages two to 12 years old (nurserykindergarten to primary level). SISB Thonburi will offer the unique SingaporeUK curriculum in English, Chinese and Thai, and the facilities will include a 25-metre swimming pool, indoor multi-purpose hall, canteen, library, music room, science lab, arts and crafts room and field. Completion is expected by Academic Year 2017 - 2018. “We are excited about the launch of the SISB Thonburi campus, our fifth campus, which marks a new phase for our school’s growth. This opportunity will enable us

to serve the community in the western part of Bangkok, with the unique Singapore curriculum, which integrates English, Chinese and Thai languages as the foundation for teaching and learning” says Kelvin Koh, chief executive officer, SISB Group. “The new SISB Thonburi campus will offer our unique education curriculum and state-of-the-art sports and arts

facilities, where students will be able to pursue their passion in various extra-curricular activities within the campus. Regardless of where we are, our mission is to develop the full potential of all students entrusted to us for their education,” says Koh. In 2013, SISB expanded beyond Bangkok and opened its third campus, SISB Suvarnabhumi in the Samut Prakarn province. In 2016, SISB celebrated its 15th anniversary and opened a new 9.5-rai complex in Pracha Uthit, which was the group’s largest project. The new complex provides state-ofthe-art facilities including a creative arts & media centre, sport complex and boarding school. SISB also launched a new campus in Chiangmai in early 2017, which is the first Singapore International School to be established in Northern Thailand.

Anyone for dinner folks?

Preparing for the zombie apocalypse

According to a Michael Jackson website, the world is heading this year for destruction by mindless zombies with one thing on their mind – you! Whilst this may sound disturbingly like the go go dancers of the Walking Street or Boyztown, there are several differences. One is that zombies don’t usually appear in the seminude, which is a bit of a relief, another is that they can’t dance

very well. Still, on second thoughts, rotten dancing can apply to nightclub employees too. However, the main difference is that your wallet won’t save you if you have an argument with the living dead. They don’t take cash or credit cards. The idea of Pattaya’s expats and non immigrant visa holders being gobbled up by zombies may seem improbable, but that’s what they said in the 1930s about landing a man on the moon. So best be prepared. Remember that zombies only have very basic instincts such as going to the shopping mall and having something to eat. They rarely retain the ability to say anything sensible and tend to wander around aimlessly in large groups. So far they sound much like Pattaya’s expats and non immigrant visa holders, so let’s move on to more useful stuff.

Nobody really knows how a zombie plague starts. The most likely explanation is that there is some kind of virus, maybe airborne, which you breathe in whilst you are snoring. Another possible explanation is that there is an exchange of bodily fluids, but we don’t want to get into that subject in a family newspaper. Once infected, you die but don’t stay dead for long and spend the rest of your life looking for human brains to eat. If you are lucky, someone will come along with a crowbar and cleave your head in two. This means you can go back to eternal sleep, or whatever. Two people have been responsible for informing us in detail about zombies. One was George Romero, the film director who started the craze with Night of the Living Dead in 1968 and has been laughing all the way to the bank ever since. Romero lets his zombies do their own thing – some are limping, others are shuffling and most keep their mouths open. In Land of the Dead in 2005 one actually carries a meat cleaver but, to be fair, he was

a butcher in real life. Movie critics have read a lot of symbolism into Romero’s zombies, such as they reflect a society obsessed with consumerism or indicate class conflict between the haves and the have-nots. But this is a pile of tosh. Zombies are killers – that’s it! Remember too that they are becoming more sophisticated. In 1968 they could not say a single word or walk properly but, by 2005, they could mumble to each other and figure out how to smash a fence. That’s progress. The other guy who told us lots about zombies was Michael Jackson who, in 1983, released the most popular video ever, “Thriller”, in which he physically transforms into a zombie and begins a choreographed dance with the pale undead. Actually the video confirmed what many people had long thought – there was something odd about Jackson – but we must not speak ill of the dead. Or the undead. Unfortunately, “Thriller” did not give us any clues about how to survive a zombie attack, which makes it all the

more surprising that Jackson made a lot of money from it. So what can you do if the zombies strike? Always remember that their head is the vulnerable part. Apart from a crowbar, a baseball bat will do nicely as revealed in the helpful movie Shaun of the Dead in 2004. You could also consider obtaining a gun but remember that you need a difficult-to-obtain firearms permit and could be prosecuted by the Pattaya police before the undead actually start advancing into your neighbourhood. Don’t waste your time with karate chops or obscure Korean martial arts – absolutely pointless against zombies. The next thing to do is to form a group. You need to be

with other normal people like yourself as pockets of survivors are likely to emerge. Looking back on movie history again, possible venues could include an underground cave with a heavy portcullis, the top floor of a condo with the lift disabled, or a supermarket with steel shutters for security rather than glass doors. If you want to venture outside you need to have on hand a working tank with diesel which can operate on multiple terrain. How you would obtain a tank is hard to say, but they are always used in military coups in Thailand so that’s a clue in the right direction for you to work on. In other words, use your brains. Whilst you still have them.

“How To Flirt With My Husband?” – 7 Easy Ways  Aquarius (Jan 23-Feb22) You Leo (Jul23-Aug22) The heavenly are desperately lonely but you  twins are at loggerheads again are chasing someone who despises and you must be careful on Thursday or To Have Him Drooling Over You In No Time! There’s no rule which says flirting has to stop once you’re married. You’ll get lots of laughs, give each other a lift, and confirm your undying love for each other. People witnessing your shenanigans will have no doubt about your happy marriage.

Every now and then, throw him an entirely unexpected compliment or two to boost his mood and see if you can’t get a “rise” out of him. 5. A Light Touch Whenever you get up from the couch to go to the kitchen, give him a feather light touch across his chest. While he’s walking by you in the hallway, grab him and give him a quick peck on the lips. While you’re watching TV, take his hand and give it a gentle squeeze (or while you are both reading on the bed). Eating dinner at a restaurant is also a perfect place to entice him with lots of gentle caresses. 6. Let Him Know He’s On Your Mind

Try on some (or even all) of these seven tips to add a bit of flirtatious tomfoolery to your daily routine. 1. Spend Precious Moments Together At Every Opportunity While the kids are outside playing, pull him aside and give him a passionate kiss. While you’re watching a movie and he gets up for a refill, follow him to the kitchen for a playful cuddle. When you’re enjoying a walk with friends, quickly sneak in a smooch while no one is looking. You could add in your best sultry look and see how much he enjoys it! 2. Let Him Choose Women sometimes like to take charge and make the decisions but every once in a while show your appreciation and let your man make some of the decisions. Put a selection of bras and panties on the bed and ask his opinion on what you should be wearing for the day. He’ll probably be thinking about how you look in the choices he made all day long. 3. Get Him Off Guard You may not have many surprises left after you’ve been married for a while, but it’s still possible to throw in a surprise every now and then with a saucy display when he least expects it. Where you can get away with it try showing up at his workplace in your favorite lingerie and treat him to a sexy display. A less risky option is to just send him a sexy text message or email (be sure to include pictures).

At random moments while you’re at work, send your man a few quick and dirty texts throughout the day. Try slipping a post it note into his lunch box with a loving message inscribed upon it. It sounds a little immature but it can go a long way to making your life together a lot more enjoyable and reinforce those marriage bonds. While he’s being reminded of you throughout the day, he will start to really look forward to seeing you when he gets home. 7. Body Language Of The Most Flirtatious Kind

4. Pay Him A Compliment

He already has a good idea that you think he’s a goodlooking sort, but have you told him so lately how nice his arms are, or how much you enjoy the way he smooches.

you for what you are – a mean and somewhat smelly individual. Bear in mind that you can’t buy love, except on the Walking Street of course. Be on your guard against an emotional email on Saturday which asks you to help your stranded grandmother in Canada to get back to Manchester. As you should know, she died thirty years ago. Pisces (Feb 23-Mar22) On Wednesday you will likely be given the opportunity to get involved in something that you have always wanted to do. This would be very dangerous indeed, especially now that the Milky Way has lost some of its colour, and we strongly suggest you take a cold shower when you receive a tempting phone call or whatever. If you reject our advice, then have a good lawyer handy. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) You need to consider some solid ideas to put your personal finances on a sound footing. These could include stopping going everywhere by limousine taxi and having afternoon tea in five-star hotels. Now that Orion is in alignment with Mars, you have the opportunity to take some sensible courses of action to protect your cash. Try to avoid leaving your passport and bankbook in night clubs. Taurus (Apr23-May22) You are far too docile and need to start showing your feelings in situations which should make you angry. Thus if somebody vomits on you whilst riding on a baht bus, then think of something more forceful than offering him your handkerchief. By all means open up to people with whom you feel comfortable sharing feelings, but avoid known criminals and bag-snatching transvestites. Gemini (May 23-Jun22) It is completely pointless worrying about internet banking when you do not own a computer or understand anything about them. Your trouble is that you are a throwback to an earlier age, even before the invention of electricity. It’s not really your fault as you come from a family of morons. Your ancestors tried to book a passage on the Titanic even after it had sunk. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) You have to face up to the fact that your lover is betraying your trust. All those used condoms, I’m afraid, are a dead giveaway. Be ready for the emotional blackmail which will follow your exposure of the adultery. Explain that you can make your own meals, thank you very much, and you don’t need a partner to explain how to use the remote control on the TV. Don’t be palmed off with nonsense.

A smile is the most central act to successful flirting with your husband or wife. He or she will be reassured that you enjoy his or her company and that will make them feel good. Coy smiles to flirtatiously obvious winks will let them know in no uncertain terms how you feel about them. For additional information on romance, health, fitness, beauty, skin care, hair care and more, go to www. urbanewomen.com.

Friday talking to strangers who may not have your best interests at heart. Thus if a stranger shakes your hand, do check immediately that your jewelry is intact. If someone tries to brush the mustard off your trousers in the street, immediately assume that person has done the squirting to try and rob you in the confusion. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) Make your surroundings as comfortable as possible but do not spend money needlessly as is your custom. For example, there is no point in buying furniture for the upstairs bedroom when you live in a bungalow. You may feel inclined to join a club or society to boost your social life, but avoid chess clubs if you can’t play the game as they tend to be unfriendly people. Sex is a possibility on Sunday but not if you remain in bed all day. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Your big day is Tuesday when you will be invited to big the opening speech at an important meeting. However, don’t spend too long on preparing it as the chances of cancellation are quite high. Attempts to bargain with somebody on Friday will backfire on you. For example, if you are the victim of a hold-up or robbery, it is futile to argue you have starving children at home craving a dry crust of bread. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) Your obsession with sex is becoming an embarrassment to yourself and everybody else. You do not seem to realize the difference between eroticism (which involves using a feather) with pornography (which involves the whole chicken). You just do not seem to care whom you approach for anonymous sexual encounters. The attendance at expat clubs has slumped since you joined. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Travel plans are likely to backfire at the weekend, especially if your car is stolen. Be very careful on Monday if someone tries to back you into a corner, the more so if you are wearing expensive jewelry. The alignment of Venus suggests that your loved one is entering a period of bad health and you may want to consider contacting underwriters and undertakers before the reality becomes too obvious. Mike Johns makes it Mick and Kei Sparkle at Crystal Bay two in a row! by Derek Brook

by Peter Grey

Pattavia CC With only the one bus to take the trek, it was loaded and left the Growling Swan a little earlier than the scheduled 8:30 am departure time and all golfers were keen as mustard to tackle this great course. We were playing today from the white tees. This has been the preferred option for our golfers. The weather was as good as one could hope for at this time of the year with overcast skies keeping the temperatures cool and sun cream savings were happily made. Pattavia is a great course and with the pricing that is being offered it is becoming quite popular. As it turned out we were ushered to the 10th tee to start the ball rolling! The condition of the course was up to a very good standard and as usual the greens were true but quite tricky! Three putts were not uncommon and was probably the main denominator of the mostly over par scores. Mike Johns continued on with his fine form returning with 42 points. It is amazing what a quick swim in one of

Don Richardson with winner Mike Johns. the many ponds on our fine courses has done to his golfing prowess. Coming in second was Denis Steele a consistent golfer with us, with John Claude, continuing on his fine form, filling the third spot on the podium. Results: 1st - Mike Johns (16) 42 points 2nd - Denis Stele (12) 36 points 3rd - J.C. Lhoste (27) 33 points Near the Pin: 4th - Brad Todd 7th - Denis Steele 13th - D-For 17th - Jc Lhoste

Long First Putt: 9th - JC Lhoste 18th - Alan Sanders Back at the Swan, we welcomed back Brad Todd along with Roy and Kae Dayton, and unfortunately we bid bon voyage to Don Richardson. The GS is a friendly golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers, young and old, male or female to have a hit on any of our weekly outings. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey if you are interested in playing on 0861 503086.

A new record for the Growling Swan

by Peter Grey

Crystal Bay It was just under 20 golfers that chose to take that journey to Crystal Bay, one of the many favorite courses for The Growling Swan golfers. The weather conditions were on our side, although quite warm, cloud cover and a slight breeze made the day rather pleasant. The course was in good nick with the greens playing true. We played C and A nines in that order (A nine was used for the count-backs), playing from the yellow tees reflected in the scores that were registered. It turned out to be The Mike Johns Show. Mike returned with a very tidy 49 points. Coming in second via the countback was Alex Field, just edging out Geoff Bracegirdle (finishing third). Last possy on the podium went to Andrew Allen. Results: 1st - Mike Johns (16) 49 points 2nd - Alex Field (16) 40 points 3rd - Geoff Bracegirdle (15) 40 points 4th - Andrew Allen (29) 37 points On a Good note Mike Johns gave up his Long Putt as Tony Fay failed to mark his putt that was a lot further away. A fine sporting gesture Mike, well done! NTP’s C4 - Mike Johns. C7- AlMarumoto B4 - Martin Todd

Andrew Allen with winner Mike Johns. B6 - Don Richardson Long Putt: C9 - Mike Johns/Tony Fay. B9 - Shane Young Back at the Swan, as usual the beers were cold and served at a great rate of knots! We welcomed back Geoff Bracegirdle, Niall Stuart, Tony Fay, Al Marumoto, and welcomed back from injury Geri Crilly. We said farewell to Shane Young travelling back to Aussie. Have a safe trip mate and we will catch up again soon. D-For was delighted to receive many donations and the players and patrons are thanked for their continued generosity. For serious golfing with compulsory sledging, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503086.

Crystal Bay – St March is here. A new month, a new quest for Golfer of the Month, and Crystal Bay is a fitting venue to start things off. Just like golfers warm up with easier clubs, Crystal Bay is a bit more forgiving than most, and good for the ego, not to mention fewer lost balls. Slow season? Twenty seven tropical golfers met at BJ's Lodge for the food and golf. Under sunny skies we headed out. Once at CB we were assigned the B and C courses. The course was a bit full with other groups visiting this day, but things spread themselves out nicely and most groups got around without much delay. The course was in overall good condition with fairways cut not too short and greens tricky. If one forced a complaint, some greens were fast and then the next one might be like putting on fly paper, but hey, we quibble. Scores at CB are usually on the high Stableford side, and

today was sure no exception! A-Flight (0-20): “Most Excellent Golfer” Kei Kasami (c/h 6) took full advantage and earned 40 points off his enviable handicap. That means he shot 74! Green anyone? Next Tom Herrington (16) showed he is still around with 38 points, followed by Andre Van Dyk (15) with 36 and John Davis (13) with 35 points. Good scores all around. B-Flight (21+): Golfers get on a roll, in-the-zone, or whatever, but Mick Coghlan

(23) continued his amazing streak with a stellar 44 points! Can you believe last week he did even better? We bow down to thee, Mick. Don Carmody (30) had a usually winning 41 points, then came Nigel Perry (25) with 38, and Mike O'Brien (23) with 34. Well played everyone! Near Pins: Doug Maiko, John Davis, Kei Kasami, Andre Van Dyk, Sina Long putts: Paul Weatherley Best Nines (non-winner): Brian Parish, Jadwiga

Dave Maw & Dave Fletcher in the winning circle by L.Lane

Greenwood Two buses and two cars headed out for the long journey to the fabulous Greenwood G.C. The trip out is down to an hour with most of the roadwork complete. Can’t say the same about the return trip! We saddled up to the very good price of 1,350 baht (green fees, cart and caddie). Not too bad at all. The course, as always was in excellent condition, nice and green, plenty of run, and the greens played true as they normally do. We played A & B courses from the white tees. With more than 20 golfers, we played two flights: A flight being 0 to 16 and B flight 17 to 36. A grade needed the count-back system to separate first and second; Dave Maw took the honors with his 37 points from Martin Tood. Filling third spot was Martin Kempton two shoots behind. B flight saw a battle weary Dave Fletcher greet the judges first--a fantastic effort considering the condition that he arrived in! Second place went to Lindsay Slender with Roy Dayton taking third. Results: A grade (0 –16) 1st – Dave Maw (11) 37 points 2nd – Martin Todd (10) 37 points 3rd – Martin Kempton (14) 35 points B grade (17 +) 1st – Dave Fletcher (27) 36 points 2nd – Lindsay Slender (25) 34 points 3rd – Roy Dayton (21) 33 points NTP’s A2 – Denis Steele

Alan Sanders and winner JC Lhoste

A flight winner Dave Maw A7 – Brad Todd B2– Sal Brizzi B5– Dave Maw Longest First Putt A9 – JC Lhoste B9 – Dave Maw We welcomed back the Judge Eric Black, Martin Kempton, Dave Fletcher, Sal Brizzi, Bill Steinmann, Lindsey Slender and Al Marumoto. Only the one farewell, Andrew and Lah Allen have opted for “A sea change”; they are moving down the coast! We wish them good luck and look forward to seeing them from time to time. I am sure that Andrew will be back for a game or two. D-for, the charity dog, was let loose to raise funds to boost his collections for the needy of Pattaya.

Bunker Boys golf by Frank Quinlan

by Derek Brook

Pleasant Valley – Stableford Hello all. Things are going well at Tropical golf as we March along (get it?) into the hot and slow season. However, the Tropical golfers are up to the task as 24 golfers signed up to tackle Pleasant Valley. There are still some tolerable weather days to be had, and though at times rather warm, clouds and wind made this day one of them. Nothing to do but enjoy it. The trials and tribulations at PV are many and start even before you tee off. Organizers have to decide between white tees--that make the course too short to be enjoyable for many-or blue tees--that make some forced carries difficult for others. Deciding on the blue markers, we headed around only to discover many of these were moved quite far back. Nothing to do but adapt your game accordingly, as complaining doesn't solve any issues. This is called “course management,” folks, and a few people gave a clinic on how to do it. A-flight (0-20): Dave Cooper (hcp 19) showed that even with his handicap falling fast he is still on the path to golf greatness. Now playing in A-flight, Dave still took a commanding win with the highest score--42

Pleasant Valley Winners Dave Cooper (L) and Mick Coghlan (R) points. This guy is good! A few strokes behind Dave was big Steve Truelove (10) with 38 points off his impressive handicap, followed by Deryl Neufeld (15) with a fine 37 points. Good golfing all. B-flight (21+): Mick Coghlan (21) once again grabbed the headlines and the camera shots with another fine performance, this time with an excellent 39 points. We wonder if the camera is broken since it always has photos of Mick in it lately. Next came Derek Brook (24) enjoying his day off from organizing by earning 36 points. It helps to be relaxed, right? Derek beat Tom Cotton (25) on count-back. Near Pins: Gordon Clegg (2), Dave Cooper, Steve Truelove Best Nines (non-winner): Barry Elphick, Takeshi Hakozaki

An Ace for Birch!

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees A hole-in-one for buddy Fred Birch was the talk of the town as the vans pulled in from today’s comp. It was on the 13th and about 148 yards with a handy seven-iron that flew the ball on the righteous path to glory. This was Freddy’s second ace and hopefully not the last. The boys were tearin’ it up out there today and if you didn’t have at least 40 on the card, then no handsome man vouchers for you on this trip. Freddy added to his ace with 17 more good holes, as did his pal Peter Thomas, and they shared third place with 40 points. A tie at 43 (yikes!) saw visiting Kevin Peggs and local lad Gary Emmett (both off 17) share the bounty of the comp. That’s a great score guys! Doctor Dan Dietz hit a lovely tee shot on the 157 yard 16th to win the Caddy Smile near pin and for once I was happy to buy the good doctor a drink for draining that 10 foot birdie putt. Results: T - 1st –Gary Emmett (17) 43 points T - 1st – Kevin Peggs (17) 43 points T - 3rd - Peter Thomas (19) 40 points T - 3rd - Fred Birch (19) 40 points

Dr. Dan, Peter, Gary and Fred Birch Khao Kheow A&B – Stableford – Yellow Tees Boy was it windy out there! It sure is nice to get that cooling effect from steady and strong breezes but it wreaks havoc for the golf game. Only two blokes shot to their handicap today, and that was just the excuse the rest of the field needed. Khao Kheow was in great shape and in fact those high winds finally did die down after we started the back nine. Former medal winner Brett Chan is back in town for an R&R session and

by Steve Ellison

his 34 got him on the podium for third place.

A tie at 36 saw 11 handicappers Mark Wood and Dan Dietz in a dead heat to share the win here today. I suppose that under the circumstances, that was as good as one could expect, so well played to the both of you. Shot of the day must belong to Steve Sweeney as he stood on the tee box of one of the most intimidating holes in Pattaya, the B-8 island green that designer Pete Dye is so famous for. Stevie knocked it to 14 feet to lay claim on the Caddy Smile near pin, so well done sir! Results: T - 1st –Dr. Daniel Dietz (11) 36 points T - 1st –Mark Wood (11) 36 points 3rd – Brett Chan (20) 34 points Pattana – Stableford – Yellow Tees The links at Pattana were turned out beautifully for us today and the 6,320 yard B & C nines were our assignment at this lovely golf course. Pattana has evolved to the level of being one of the better courses in the Pattaya area. The clubhouse has always been a showcase for how it should be done (if you have that kind of money to spend!) and now the greenskeeping crews are also top notch. Some great weather also added to the enjoyment of the day. Good shooting saw Bill Sheply hit that 40 point mark and in a class of his own. Tied for second was “the other” Robbie Taylor and Ishi with Garry Bright for 4th just a shot back. Ishi also took the Caddy Smile near pin and unfortunately made that birdie for a drink on the house! I think I will stick that in McHugh’s bin. Results: 1st – Bill Sheply (6) 40 points T - 2nd– Robbie Taylor (14) 38 points T - 2nd– Masao “Ishi” Ishikawa (17) 38 points 4th – Garry Bright (13) 37 points Parichat Links – 1-Man Scramble – White Tees The One-Man Scramble turned out to be a One-Man contest as a full 9 strokes separated

Mountain Shadow (blue tees) Wi t h t h e c o u r s e o n o u r s c h e d u l e disappointing us on a previous visit last week, the Bunker Boys decided a change of venue was in order and what a masterstroke it turned out to be. Mountain Shadow was the alternate venue where the first group walked straight onto the first tee, completed the round within three and a half hours and were back in Pattaya by 4 pm. This is how golf should be, a good course, good caddies, and no holdups. Despite the lack of recent rain, the course is holding up remarkably well and presents a good test of golf. A strong breeze blowing up the first fairway to the clubhouse added to the challenge. Near pins were shared among four players, with the usual suspects names appearing on the near-pin flags. In first place, despite the putting yips, was Michael Brett on 37 points, the only player to beat his handicap. It looks like low season golf is upon us so we can look forward to faster rounds with fewer hassles, and lower green fees with even the possibility to play some of the courses not on our playing roster during high season. Results: 1st - Mike Brett (16) 37 points 2nd - Les Hall (24) 36 points 3rd - Geoff Parker (13) 34 points Near pins: Peter Habgood, Mike Brett, Mark Stanley, P J Redmond Greenwood (white tees) A baker’s dozen turned out for the first medal round of the month at Greenwood A & B courses. Play was pedestrian at best with the C course closed and everybody shoehorned into the A & B layouts. Temperatures were high and energy-sapping with many players displaying signs of fatigue post round. The sartorially splendid Raleigh Gosney was in the lead for most of the round only to be pipped at the post at the end by Neil Carter. Raleigh’s name appeared on most of the near-pin flags but only secured one; his reason for playing so well is that he needs the cash to refresh his wardrobe with a new supply of body hugging Hawaiian floral shirts. It is possible that our numbers may dwindle even more in the coming weeks with a few more of our members visiting foreign parts. Any locals looking for a hassle-free round of golf should contact Neil at the M Club, where no prior booking is required, simply turn up and play; transport to and from venues is organised at the club.

Results: 1st - Neil Carter (14) 71 net 2nd - Raleigh Gosney (17) 72 3rd - Geoff Parker (13) 73 oco Near pins: Neil Carter, Raleigh Gosney, Geoff Parker, Gerry Cooney Crystal Bay (white tees) One flight turned up for the last game of the week at a course that normally plays easy and high numbers are required to figure in the prizes. This was the case on the front nine but the back nine was a different story. Greens were significantly quicker than the front nine which caught a number of players unawares, and the wind started to blow strongly, adding to the difficulty. Normally, winning scores here are in the area of 40 points; not today. Geoff returned a steady 35 points to take first place on count-back with 18 points on the back nine to Frank’s 15 points, whilst the increasingly consistent Raleigh took third on 34 points. Surely we will soon see him in a new range of Hawaiian shirts. The course was full with two societies playing, so the scourge of golf everywhere (slow play) was the order of the day. At this stage, it’s hard to see how the proposed changes to the rules of golf will have any significant affect on the amateur game, and the problem will only be fixed by better scheduling and more intervention from course marshals. Even in Pattaya where most people are not pushed for time, any game of golf over four hours is unacceptable. Results: 1st - Geoff Parker (13) 35 oco 2nd - Frank Quinlan (32) 35 3rd - Raleigh Gosney (17) 34 oco Near pins: Neil Carter, Frank Quinlan, Geoff Williams.

the winner from second place. Parichat Links was again chosen to host this quarterly contest as a Mulligan per hole was given for all holes in this interesting format. The basic rule is that you get one free shot per hole and you can use it on your drive, approach or putting and once selected, the ball is then in play and no turning back. Obviously, scoring should be very good with this allowance but most of the field failed to Dr. Dan, Peter, Gary and Fred Birch capitalize on the assistance. You & Your Pets

Knock it off…or over To say that cats are mischievous is an understatement. Anything that moves or dangles is potential prey. Anything unrecognizable is a potential enemy. Any sudden sound a potential threat. When they’re not sleeping, these natural predators are attacking or lying-in-wait or fleeing. Such behavior is understandable. But why do cats seem to enjoy knocking things off of counters, tables, shelves and vanities? The habit may have been cute when they were kittens, but it ceases to be amusing when glasses shatter and porcelain statues break and expensive cologne bottles smash onto the tile floor. The reasons for such destructive behavior are not clear, but one theory is that it relates to the curiosity in cats. Their paw pads are very sensitive, so when they pat, swat, and knock something down, it helps them better explore things around them. It’s their way of testing

objects, and the movement, sound, and touch or feel of the object gives them some idea of what it is, and helps them understand whether or not the item is safe. Equally likely is that your cat is seeking attention… and they can be quite creative when they’re feeling neglected. Think back to your reaction when you were using your computer, watching TV, or reading a book and suddenly you heard something crash onto the floor. Bet that got your attention! If your cat’s not demanding that you feed him or play with him, then it probably just wants to be noticed. Acknowledged. Even being scolded is better than being ignored. They learn early how to get your attention. Your reaction plays a key role in their behaviors. Knocking over objects provides a sure-fire method for cats to get a reaction out of people. So as hard as it may be, the best thing to do is to ignore the behavior (and put away anything breakable). A final possibility: Your cat may knock things over simply because it’s fun. When she moves something with her paw it combines the best aspects of stalking and preychase with the movement and tactile feel of the patted object, and the ultimate rush of the item falling over or down and crashing! What a thrill for the little angel. You can try to divert her attention by providing plenty of toys, rotating them so she doesn’t get bored. And you can schedule playtime with her daily. That might keep her from searching for attention…and getting into trouble.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Sleepyheads

These 3 lovely kittens, 2 boys and a girl, were found on Christmas day and had only just been born. As you can see they have grown up to be big and strong. In this photo they are having a well deserved nap after spending most of the morning tearing around the house.

Holly

Holly is the mum of the kittens in the previous photo. We found her and her babies on Christmas day it was clear that they had just been born. Since being with us she has put on a lot of weight and is now a very friendly girl. By the time you read this article she will neutered and vaccinated.

Shelley

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

Shelley is a very friendly girl who loves helping in the garden and with the housework. She is a little shy though and will need a bit of time to get used to a new home and owner. Once she gets to know you though she will never leave your side.

Stop the Bleeding If your dog or cat returns home bleeding, immediately apply direct pressure using gauze over the wound. If blood soaks through, apply more gauze (do not remove soaked gauze) until you can reach a veterinary hospital. Bleeding might be caused by any number of factors ranging from traffic accidents to animal bites. If it’s the latter, you must take your pet to a vet—even if the wound is minor. You want to prevent any wound from becoming infected, and your vet can check to ensure there are no internal injuries. If you witness a fight between two animals, never attempt to break it up because you could be bitten.

Mr. Tibbs

This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now. He just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.

Cat Corner Tip Walt Disney was afraid of mice!

NOTES: 1-The above is meant in jest. 2-Do NOT follow the instructions. 3-The item was not written or submitted by The Dog. (Really!)

Donkeys kill more people every year than plane crashes or shark attacks.

As social beings, cats like it when you're around. When left alone, they might get noisy or spray your house. So when you plan to go out, ignore them for about 15 minutes before you leave and after you get back. During your absence, put out some of their favorite toys; on your return, put the toys away. Play with your cats regularly so that they burn extra energy and, hopefully, they’ll rest when they’re alone.
