What happens after death?

A

ccording to a survey conducted amongst expats in Thailand last year, ignorance and concerns about the procedures if someone close dies here loom large in the worries people have. The British foreign office last month issued an advisory circular advising next-of-kin on handling crime-related deaths in Thailand such as murder, manslaughter or suspicious circumstances. However, much of the circular also applies to non-criminal deaths.

There are no official statistics produced by the Thai government on farang deaths. Occasionally, embassies in Bangkok do shed some light and it appears, for example, that around 100 Australians die in Thailand annually and about 250 British nationals. The usual assumption is that approximately 1,000 nonThais of all nationalities die in the Kingdom every year. It may be that a growing percentage of this number is Chinese.

The overwhelming majority of the deaths are from natural causes and accidents. Because the average age of long-term expats appears to be rising, health problems present a growing challenge. It is very difficult for retirees in their 70s to obtain good-quality medical insurance at a price they can afford. As regards younger men and women, usually tourists, motorbike crashes and accidental drownings loom large. Only about five percent of all deaths of foreigners are

thought to be crime-related or suicides. Most people die at home or in a hospital or in a public place. A phone call to the police is virtually automatic and it is at police discretion whether to insist on an autopsy. All suspicious deaths will incur an autopsy usually conducted at the Police Hospital in Bangkok. If, however, a patient dies in a hospital which has a record of treatment and medicines, say Continued on page 4

Motorcycle crashes into truck

A police checkpoint at Soi 17 South Pattaya found a Thai woman carrying gun. The 36-year-old woman, Suay Pengprakol, was a passenger in the car of a male driver, who insulted the police officers. When the couple was asked to get out of the car, the police found the gun in a box. The woman said that she has a license, but police said the documents were not complete. She was held for questioning.

Another Chinese tourist robbed A farang on a motorcycle crashed into the back of a pick-up truck on Beach Road, injuring the bike driver and a Thai lady passenger. Chanapol Chinasod, owner and driver of pick-up truck, said he heard something bump his truck so he stopped and found the couple unconscious on the road.

Another necklace snatched Chinese tourist Xu Jinqiang was robbed of a gold necklace snatched from his neck in North Pattaya. The man and his girlfriend were walking to a convenience store when a passing motorcyclist snatched the 120,000 baht piece of jewelry. However, to his surprise, Qiang found half of his necklace still behind his neck. Police investigators said that the suspect’s description matches that of another suspect reportedly snatching necklaces from Chinese tourists in the same area.

News Police raise funds

The Thai National Police’s fund-raising concert at Nongnooch Tropical Garden raised funds for police officers and families in need in three provinces in South of Thailand. Pattaya Police Chief Pol. Col. Apichai Kroppech donated 20,000 baht.

Panwa Boonnak crowned Thailand Optimist National Champion Thailand’s premier youth sailing event, the Thailand Optimist National Championships, came to a close after three days of racing and conditions-wise, a bit of everything – storm, thunder, lightening, rain and fickle, shifty breeze. A 76-strong fleet lined up for this the forty-second edition of the championships with sailors from Thailand, Hong Kong, Costa Rica and India competing. The best two results from three races on Day 1 determined Fleets A and B, and at the end of the first day it was Thai duo Panwa Boonnak and Jedtavee Yongyuennan who were battling it out against Costa Rican youngster, Mic Mohr, and Duncan Gregor (HKG) for the top places. Panw a Boonnak and Jedtavee Yongyuennan came into the Nationals confident of a good performance following their first and second overall at the 2017 Hua Hin Regatta just

one week before, and both got off to a good start. Following the second day of racing a 5,1,1 scoreline saw Panwa Boonnak holding a one point lead over Jedtavee Yongyuennan with Duncan Gregor – a second place finisher last year – still in striking distance just four points back. It’s the first time the event has attracted sailors from Costa Rica and the three young relatives have been enjoying the challenging conditions. Following a third place at Hua Hin Regatta one week prior, Mic Mohr was looking to improve on that at the Nationals and, having competed in more than 100 regattas already in his young sailing career, Mic has big plans. “In the future I want to be the World Champion. In the Optimist first and then later, Laser.” In Fleet B, after two days of racing the top four places

were dominated by Thai sailors – Thippawan Khumpinit, Tanakorn Bunekarat, Vimutti Klinsukontac and Christopher Marsh respectively. Going into the final day the weather forecast was predicting an early afternoon squall, and right on cue it arrived, sending the fleet back to shore to wait out the worst of it. After a brief rest, sailors were back on-the-water and eager to get going, however, with time and weather conditions against them, just two races for Fleet A completed and one for Fleet B. In Fleet A, it was looking like the result would be decided in the jury room after Jedtavee Yongyuennan lodged a protest to have Race 8 (the final race) removed from the series. After some deliberation by the jury, the protest was thrown out and the race result stood, and with that a new Thailand National Optimist Champion was crowned – Panwa Boonnak. Jedtavee Yongyuennan was

gracious in defeat and was again the bridesmaid while Mic Mohr finished third and Duncan Gregor fourth. In Fleet B, Thippawan Khumpinit held off a spirited challenge from Tanakorn Bunekarat and Vimutti Klinsukontachat who finished second and third respectively. Launched in 1976 as the Optimist Thailand Championship Cup, more than 40 years later the Thailand Optimist National Championships is as competitive as ever, regularly attracting top young sailors from Thailand and around the world. Incorporated in the Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina, it is supported by the Sports Authority of Thailand, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Pattaya City, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and the Royal Thai Navy.

What happens after death? for heart trouble, then the police will likely not insist on an autopsy. Next-of-kin will not be able to move the body from any hospital without obtaining from the appropriate embassy a letter of release which permits the undertaker to prepare the corpse for hygienic disposal (cremation) in Thailand, or transfer back to the home country in an embalmed state, if that is what the next-of-kin or executor requires. However, it should be noted that there are many expenses - hospital and autopsy fees, funeral home fees, embassy charges, etc. - which the nearest and dearest will have to pay. The total bill can be higher than expected. It is often forgotten that cold storage of a corpse, which can last for weeks in difficult cases, can be subject to a mortuary charge of 600 baht a day. Burials in Thailand are rare and more expensive than back in Europe or the United States. Cremations at a Thai temple can cost anything from 25,000 baht to 100,000 baht depending on what specific services are ordered. Cremations in city centre temples are more expensive than in rural areas. In cases where a foreigner dies and there is absolutely nobody to take care of the costs, the Thai state will likely host a pauper’s cremation or turn the body over to one of several rescue organizations (such as Sawangboriboon) which keep plots of land as temporary gravesites. Added to all these stresses is the scenario where loved ones have been murdered. There is likely to

be sustained press and social media interest, some of it brutal to say the least, and including the publication of disturbing photographs. If the police arrest a suspect or suspects, the resulting court case can take several years to complete, rules of evidence in Thailand may be unfamiliar to visitors from Europe or the United States. In recent years, the Thai government - through its justice and tourism ministries - has introduced discretionary compensation schemes for the families of the deceased. The maximum payment per family is 100,000 baht, although this upper limit is seldom awarded. Moreover, it is not possible to award compensation if a court case is still pending. Most of the payments to date seem to have been made to the relatives of foreigners in a fatal accident, say a drowning or a motorway pile-up of vehicles. Death in a foreign land is a crisis time for the nearest and dearest who have the additional burdens of cost and language difficulty as all relevant documents will be in Thai. Provided the relatives have funds to transfer, non-criminal deaths are quite easy to administer and all embassies keep a list of recommended undertakers who will be responsible for the detail. If the death is suspicious in some way, there may be the need to hire a good lawyer to represent the family’s interests. But patience will indeed be necessary. In life or death, it is never possible to hurry the Orient.

Qatar Airways and TAT sign agreement to boost tourism to Thailand The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Qatar Airways, one of the world’s leading airlines, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2017 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. With this latest partnership, TAT seeks to leverage the strength of Qatar Airways’ extensive global network, particularly its presence in secondary cities in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, to increase the number of tourist arrivals to Thailand in 2017 and 2018. Under the MoU, TAT and Qatar Airways will develop joint promotions to mutually increase tourism and visibility for Thailand to travellers in more than 150 destinations the airline flies to. Thailand, one of Qatar Airways’ earliest destinations in the Far East, has grown from strength to strength in the last two decades. Effective June 1, Qatar Airways will have five daily flights from Doha to Bangkok. The increased frequency, along with its double-daily Phuket flights and the five-month-old Krabi operations (four flights a week), take the number of weekly Qatar Airways departures from Thailand to Doha to 53. Besides the existing three popular Thai destinations, Qatar Airways has also set its sights on Chiang Mai, the largest city in Northern Thailand. The MoU was signed by Ehab Amin, Qatar Airways chief commercial officer, and Tanes Petsuwan, TAT deputy governor for International Marketing, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas, at a commemorative event at the ATM 2017. They were joined by Yuthasak

Supasorn, TAT governor, Chalermsak Suranant, director of the TAT Dubai and Middle East Office, and other high-ranking executives from both organisations. Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways Group chief executive, “Our increased frequency to Bangkok and the enhanced collaboration with the TAT is testament to our commitment to the Thai market. Bangkok has long been a hugely popular destination for both business and leisure travellers. The partnership with the TAT will enable us to jointly work together to attract more travellers from secondary cities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to experience the warm and gracious hospitality Thailand is renowned for, and power the growth of this iconic Far East route for Qatar Airways.” Petsuwan said, “Partnering Qatar Airways, one of the world’s best airlines, will open up additional access to markets which hold great potential for the TAT and our unique tourism proposition. With this MoU, our aim is to jointly put in place the best strategies and practices to enhance Thailand’s marketing footprint and position it as a preferred leisure

destination through Thainess offering unique local experiences.” “Qatar Airways’ fifth daily flight to Bangkok will provide more connections from Thailand’s key source markets in Europe; such as, the United Kingdom, Italy and the Middle East. In 2016, the number of Middle Eastern visitors to Thailand increased by 13 per cent not to mention the strong demand for leisure travel on the Bangkok route all-year round,” added Petsuwan. Besides secondary points in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, TAT also has keen interest in the South America market where Qatar Airways recently announced expansion plans to Rio de Janeiro and Santiago. This will supplement its existing points – Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires. Closer collaboration between Qatar Airways and TAT in South America is to be expected with the opening of TAT’s new office in Sao Paolo in October 2017. Brazil has been earmarked as one of the key emerging markets for TAT with more than 40 per cent growth in visitor arrivals in 2016. The Latin America market’s tourism receipts also grew by approximately 30 per cent in 2016.

Cambodia cheap It is not only Thailand which is facing a downturn in European tourists. Hotel prices in Cambodia, especially Siem Reap, are falling too. Although Siem Reap is home to the famous Angkor Wat temple complex, it does not have a comfort-zone beach (for obvious reasons) which discourages the Chinese in particular from dallying there too long. TM 30 Wow what a load of confusion this has created. It is the form which the condo or house owner has to report to immigration within 24 hours of the arrival of a foreign guest in a private home. The regulation also covers hotels and block accommodation for aliens. The most persisting ambiguity is whether one-year visa holders must report themselves, especially every time they return to Thailand from abroad. Sorry, but there isn’t one answer, it seems! Park naughties The authorities have finally got round to suggesting better lighting in Pattaya park, on the hill near the Tourist Police station, because of suspicions that prostitutes and free-lancers of various descriptions have been loitering there for you-know-what. Nothing new in all this, although the lighting remains on the dark side. Pattaya park has been “famous” for years. Mimosa back The popular Jomtien-based Italian restaurant Mimosa has been closed for renovation but is now back providing top-class dishes to its many regular customers. Their pizzas would be difficult to beat and the melon with Parma ham is to die-for. Not literally, but you know what we mean. It is closed on Sundays by the way. Child UK passport These applications seem to be attracting very close scrutiny in the UK passport office. Assuming the documentation is in order, the British authorities will likely want a re-confirmation from the British parent and from the counter-signatory (who must know the father and be able to recognize the applicant). The additional checks are said to be necessary because of fraudulent applications. Prostate cancer This disease remains a concern to many older men. The latest research from the United States says that the disease is often very slow and that no action may be the best approach, especially for men in their 70s. However, a PSA test and follow up screening will likely save two men in a hundred from dying from prostate cancer and will prevent the disease from spreading to other organs in a further three. Whether to take the PSA test is very much an individual decision. Cambodian retirement One-year retirement visas are now available in Cambodia but you must have a one-month “general” visa – and not a tourist one – if you decide to apply. The requirements are a letter from “your government” certifying you are retired – best of luck with that one – and proof that you have a regular income, presumably bank statements. But it is not necessary to deposit cash in a Cambodian bank, nor does there seem to be a minimum pensionincome floor. Watch your booth When exchanging cash in Pattaya, it does matter a lot where you choose to do business. A recent walk along Second Road revealed quite a large chasm between different booths – the best rate for the English pound was 44.60 and the worst 42.90. These rates were on offer several days before our publication date. Making hummus This Middle East delicacy is very popular, but the main supermarket brands can be expensive and may contain additives you don’t want. It is easy to make your own hummus and there are several good descriptions on You Tube. But it can be difficult to obtain the all-important tahini paste, made from ground sesame seeds, unless you go to Friendship supermarket which usually has a steady supply. Look in the aisle with the jams, opposite the refrigerated meat pies. So many Indians The number of Indian restaurants in the resort continues to escalate. There are a new bunch on Second Road, opposite Central Festival Pattaya Beach, and several more in the city centre on the road towards Jomtien before the traffic lights at the Third Road intersection. But the old ones, such as Ali Baba, may still be the best!

New Chevrolet Colorado continues 70,000-kilometer expedition from Brazil to China Brazilians Amandio Palhares and Joselle Pinheiro stopped in Thailand as they continue their 70,000-kilometer expedition from Brazil to China in a new Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. Their starting point was the São Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil on November 20, 2016. This is the duo’s second long-distance journey. They earlier traveled 65,000 kilometers in a Chevrolet pickup truck from Goiânia, Brazil, to the U.S. state of Alaska. The New Chevrolet Colorado Around the World Expedition is expected to take 10 to 12 months. Palhares and Pinheiro are passing through Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos before reaching China. For the Asian leg, which started in Malaysia and stopped in Singapore before reaching Thailand, the pair are driving

the LTZ 2.8-liter turbodiesel variant of the new Colorado. The vehicle has been entrusted to the care of Chevrolet Sales Thailand, which completed a full pre-delivery inspection to ensure the vehicle is ready for all challenges. “The 2017 model offers even more comfort and robust handling,” said Palhares. “This is important, as we are spending up to a year inside the vehicle crossing a large part of the planet.” He added, “I would like to express my gratitude to Chevrolet Sales Thailand for maintaining our vehicle. Thanks to the outstanding performance of our new

Colorado, we have been able to meet all challenges. This is underscored by Chevrolet’s slogan of Find New Roads.” During their visit to Thailand, the duo visited GM’s manufacturing facility in Rayong province, where many parts of their new Colorado are produced – including its 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine. They also journeyed to Phuket, Krabi and Ayutthaya. A highlight was a stop at the Bangkok International Motor Show, where Palhares and Pinheiro saw the full range of Chevrolet products offered in Thailand and felt the enthusiasm for the brand on the other side of the world from Brazil. For their adventure, the pair installed a “house” in the pickup truck. The four-squaremeter structure has a double bed, bathroom and kitchen with a stove and refrigerator. Fans can follow their journey on their website (www. viajeandonos4x4.com.br), their Instagram (viajandonos4x4) and their Facebook page (viajandonos4x4).

Bangkok remains most visited Asia-Pacific destination in Mastercard Index 2017 Bangkok has retained its place as the Top Destination in terms of visitor numbers out of 171 destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the latest figures from the influential Mastercard AsiaPacific Destinations Index 2017. Bangkok welcomed 19.3 million international overnight arrivals in 2016 of the 339.2 million visits made to the 171 Asia-Pacific destinations on the Mastercard list. This put the Thai capital above second place Singapore, which attracted 13.1 million. Thai destinations Phuket and Pattaya also placed in the Top Ten on the report, with 9.1 million and 8.1 million overnight visits, respectively. The Mastercard AsiaPacific Destinations Index 2017 ranks 171 destinations in 22 countries. These include resorts, towns and cities and are ranked in terms of the total number of international overnight arrivals, crossborder spending, and the total number of nights spent at each destination. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT governor said, “Bangkok once again takes top place

in the Mastercard listing, showing how attractive the city is to tourists and business travellers who visit knowing they’ll find a city that will impress and meet their needs. Whether they are just passing through or want to explore the amazing shopping, food scene, history and entertainment, visitors find that in this most exciting of destinations, there’s something for everyone.” Bangkok also topped the list of total nights stayed with 87.6 million nights, showing that visitors to Asia-Pacific destinations are travelling for longer periods. In 2016, visitors to the region stayed for 1,768.7 million nights, compared with 1,023.1 million nights in 2009, representing an 8.1 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR). In terms of overall tourism

expenditure in the region, Bangkok took second place with spending of US$12.7 billion of the US$244.9 billion spent in 2016. Singapore topped the list with US$15.4 billion. The growing numbers of tourists from China and South Korea helped to boost these figures to the Asia-Pacific region. Meanwhile, China was the top source market for visitors to Bangkok with affluent Chinese seeking out shopping and dining experiences in the region. The Mastercard AsiaPacific Destinations Index is an off-shoot of the annual Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index and reflects the increasing importance of the Asia-Pacific region for tourism. In 2016, five of the ten most visited cities in the world were in the Asia-Pacific region.

design ideas and processes. They then experiment a process of developing products from waste materials under the supervision of renowned upcycling experts, Associate Professor Dr. Singh Intrachooto, Thailand’s pioneer of ecological design, head of the Creative Centre for Eco-design and founder of Kasetsart University’s Scrap Lab, and Dr. Nattapong NithiUthai, founder of Tlejourn, best known for its eco-friendly footwear made from upcycling ocean debris. Onyx Hospitality Group acknowledged the support of sponsors including Kiat Siam Leatherware, Hawaii Thai Furniture and ERP, who provided funds to the students participating in the project in order to support product development. To help the students supplement their creativity with functionality and business opportunities,

senior leaders from the three corporate sponsors also provide factory visits and coaching support to the students for development of their product designs and prototypes. Four out of eight teams participated in the Arts for The Planet 2017 were selected as winners by the reviewing panel. All winning teams were awarded trophies and scholarships at the award ceremony. The Best Design Award was presented to Piphat Thongta and Chawanlapa Darachart for their creations titled “Beep Beep”. The students transformed a combination of leftover sponge, synthetic rattan, dacron, wood and aluminium from a furniture factory and mixed them with concrete to create plant pots and candle light holders which were all presented in practical and visually appealing packaging.

Blood Donation Centra by Centara Maris Resort Jomtien led by Chaiphun Thongsuthum, general manager, in cooperation with Thai Red Cross Chonburi, held the second blood donation for the year 2017 at Maris 1. They collected18,800 cc of blood for hospitals on Eastern Seaboard. This will be held in the hotel every three months and the next Blood Donation is on August 1.

Both students received trophies and a scholarship worth 40,000 baht. The Inspiring Design Award was presented to Seksit Pakdee and Guillaume Bichon for their creation titled “Fantasteak”. The students created a chair, a desk lamp and a photo frame using recycled plastic boards from Tlejourn, left over bottle corks from their university cafeteria, and teak and leather scraps from the sponsors’ factories. They credit Lego for the inspiration behind their creation. Both students received trophiesand a scholarship worth 30,000 baht. The Creative Design Awards were presented to two teams of students. The first team, consisting of Nutkritta Nilkamhaeng and Lucie Lauwerier, created “From the bin to the sky”, a product made from leftover rope braid scrap from a furniture factory and straws from the university cafeteria into do-it-yourself kites in various shapes. Our Community The best show ever to come to Pattaya. Ever! by Derek Franklin This was the opinion of one member of the audience following the final routine at Alcazar Theater recently by the International Folk Dance Ensemble from the United States. Other who attended said that it was the best show they had ever seen. The performers are all students at Brigham Young University in the United States. Traveling to Pattaya from Bangkok, and returning to the capital less than twelve hours later, the troupe is currently touring several Southeast Asian countries. Their one and only Pattaya performance was also their only performance where all the proceeds would be donated to a charity, in this case the Education Fund at the Father Ray Foundation. The 90 minute show, Journeys, took the audience to countries most will never visit: traditional hopak from the Ukraine, flamenco from Spain and an African-influenced routine from Haiti. There was Irish hard show dancing, which, according to one audience member, herself from the Emerald Isle, ‘was like being back home, made me feel a bit homesick it was

that good’ Other dance performances came from countries as far afield as Haiti, Hungary, Mexico and Spain, as well as several from the United States. But the one performance which received the loudest reaction from the audience was a routine from Indonesia, which saw the performers on their knees, never once standing up and yet they managed to perform a dance that most people won’t forget for a long time. This was the second visit to Pattaya by the Utah-based university; a few years ago they performed a 90 minute show full of Broadway show tunes and dance routines, which at the time many thought could never be bettered, until they made their second visit. The director of the show announced that the students will be back in Thailand in a few years time, and also coming back to perform in Pattaya. Remember the name, Brigham Young University, and the next time they are coming to Pattaya don’t forget to buy a ticket, you definitely won’t regret it.

HOLIDAY INN PATTAYA STAGES ITS MONTHLY WINE EVENING @ HAVANA BAR & RESTAURANT ANOTHER CORKER! Havana Bar is located on the ground floor of Holiday Inn Pattaya Bay Tower, Pattaya Beach Road. This lounge bar is classy and upscale, reconstructing the Cuban bars of the fascinating ’30s and ’40s when Hemingway created the now famous daiquiris and the iconic mojito cocktail. Soaring wooden ceilings, deep mahogany-coloured leather sofas, comfy easy chairs, black and white photos from the era, huge Cuban-style chandeliers all contribute to the mood emulating a watering hole where Papa Hemingway would have been happy to while away the hours. This bar is plush, sophisticated and unique and is the setting for Holiday Inn’s monthly wine event. The latest vinous happening was in partnership with Siam Winery which had selected six Italian centric wines from the vineyards of Mezzacorona at the foothills of the Dolomites where Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are the dominant varietals. We were also to be served wines from Marco Felluga (Mongris label), an Italian Estate founded in 1950 and located in Gradisca d’Isonzo, a fortified citadel of the Venetian Republic. The internationally acclaimed Mionetto Winery provided the excellent Prosecco and first pour of the evening. Not only were we to enjoy these selected wines with a selection of creative canapés and artisanal cheeses from the kitchens of Executive Chef Jason Large but also a live entertainment performance from Mary, Jowel and the Blues Machine. Priced at B.1,190 net per person these events are enthusiastically attended throughout the year. As mentioned, the first pour of

the evening was a flute of Mionetto Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut. This dry but richly fruity sparkler with its tight bubbles and crisp finish was a winner and perfectly complemented the Sloane’s pork terrine with its tart apple chutney or the nacho bowls topped with avocado and sour cream. Round 2 presented Marco Felluga’s “Mongris” (a contraction of mono varietal and in this case Pinot Grigio). This was a favourite of mine, elegantly golden in colour but with an intense bouquet and surprisingly full-bodied, it was able to make very good friends indeed with my (first) forage at the splendid cheese table. And make friends it did with my first choice of Reblochon de Savoie, an iconic French mountain cheese, soft and mellow, it was a luscious combination. We stayed at the cheese table to enjoy the Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio Trentino, a more robust wine with a full-bodied palate of yellow stone fruit and just

Executive Chef Jason Large

a hint of nutmeg. It paired well with the Gruyere and even the English Stilton. Another Mezzacorona, this time a Chardonnay, proved a winner with the grilled lobster, roasted vine tomato and basil pesto bruschetta and especially the onion tart topped with a generous portion of salmon roe. Rounds 5 and 6 produced the reds both from the Mezzacorona vineyards. The Pinot Nero Trentino DOC had benefited from a brief maturation process in oak barrels while the Cabernet Sauvignon Trentino with its elegance of flavour made a chic pairing with the spicy Thai pork meatballs with fresh herbs. I’ve only mentioned a handful of the substantial canapés on offer but before we go we should praise the mini smoky chicken burgers layered with bacon, cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Desserts climax the evening with the likes of spiced apple sponge cakes, chocolate ganache choux buns and a lemon and white chocolate panna cotta. The forward-thinking Holiday Inn Pattaya management team are always reaching outside the culinary box to provide an innovative approach to wining and dining Holiday Inn Pattaya style. Do check their website for their upcoming wine tasting events. The excellent monthly wine tastings (the last Saturday of the month) are priced at B.1,190 net per person and are always well attended by hotel guests, visitors and expats. THE BANG SARAY BEACH CLUB

Soak up the views, enjoy frosty beers and cocktails at the area’s best beach bar It’s been about nine months since the newly revamped Bang Saray Beach Club flung open its doors to old and new friends. Since then it has garnered a host of “likes” and become one of the neighbourhood’s most popular meeting places due to its bright and breezy ambiance, tasty menu and the infectious enthusiasm from its manager, Alan Mehew. However, restaurants these days cannot rest on their laurels but must continually be evolving and coming up with new ideas; regulars need feeding fresh concepts and new customers need tempting with innovative culinary notions. To this end, an Italian Evening was planned. Starters, bruschetta, minestrone and a cold cut selection were on offer for the extraordinary (special night) price of B.100. This was followed by spaghetti carbonara, penne Bolognese and pizza (all at only B.200) with the manager’s homemade tiramisu completing the menu at B.100. The antipasti was well assembled with the cold cuts offering an excellent salami Milano and a top-quality Parma ham accompanied by cornichons and bread. This was Mick’s choice and he found the quality top-notch and the price exceptional value. I opted for the bruschetta which came in four toasted garlicky paninis molton and yummy topped with extra virgin olive oil, slices of tomato, parmesan cheese and a crowning black olive. Our friend decided on the minestrone soup and was delighted. A garden of neatly cubed vegetables in a vibrant homemade tomatoey soup proved to be a first-class rendition of the classic soup and one that he would be delighted to reorder at the next opportunity. Next up were the pasta and pizza choices and our table tasted all three. A classic carbonara was rich and creamy; the Bolognese adhered to the classic principles,

Skewer of river prawns and fish

and the pizza, topped with a rich tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms and ham, very tasty indeed. All received kudos from our table. The dolce was homemade tiramisu. There are as many recipes for this dreamy dessert as there are Italian grandmothers and this one was squisito; a fluffy cloud of silky cream and sponge punctuated with zings of strong espresso, it sweetly brought down the curtain on this, hopefully, first of many international themed dinners. It may have taken a while for the food to get to some tables but once there all comments were favourable. The popularity of this restaurant had resulted in an

unexpectedly massive turnout so perhaps “reservation only” would be the way to go for future events. The a la carte menu at the Bang Saray Beach Bar covers the gamut of all-day dishes expected at a modern beach bar. The full Monty of an English breakfast (B.280) has masses of fans beating a path to this door while the athletes jog down the beach to enjoy the healthy approach with Greek style yoghurt topped with muesli and fresh fruit (B.150) while the “continental” is packed with toasted sourdough bread, preserves and freshly steaming coffee. Seriously, what could possibly compete with taking your breakfast overlooking the bay of

Bang Saray with the waves gently lapping at your feet and your eyes feasting on the panoramic vista of sun, sea and sand beyond? There’s something to please everyone on this contemporary menu from the tasty chicken liver pate with brandy, the Australian Angus beef burger or the New Zealand lamb burger to their vibrant salads and Thai favourites. And then there’s their hard-tobeat Sunday barbeque (B.299). They have a professional stateof-the-art BBQ pit equipped with four different types of BBQ. It is fired up every Sunday from around midday and runs until sunset or when the food runs out. It’s a full feast of BBQ items and side dishes including a much loved house special of crispy pork belly. The Bang Saray Beach Club is a leisure destination to suit all the family with a menu that hits the right notes, and a bar serving local

and imported beers, signature cocktails and an extensive wall of wines at reasonable prices. This beachside gem needs to be discovered, so the next time you’re in the area do travel the extra kilometer and see for yourself exactly what it has to offer. Turn off Sukhumvit Highway through the arch of Bang Saray and carry on through the mini roundabout until you see a temple on your right. Take the road directly in front of the gates and follow it through until you reach a white wall on your right with the Bang Saray Beach Club logo and there you will see the entrance to the club.

Bang Saray Beach Club Open daily from 11:30 am to 10 pm Tel: 063 306 4656 Ample parking provided www.thebangsaraybeachclub.com

Bumpy road to beauty Thai and farang ladies alike commonly experience razor bumps—or ingrown hairs. The small, irritated bumps on the skin that appear after you shave are caused when strands of hair curl back on themselves and grow into the skin. They cause irritation and pimples. And they can even cause scarring. The best way to treat razor bumps is to stop shaving. If you can't—or won’t—do that, use a clean needle to release the hair shaft when you see a bump forming. This usually stops a razor bump from growing. For severe razor bumps, you may need a special skin cream, such as hydrocortisone, antibiotic, or tretinoin cream. If you want to avoid razor bumps entirely, you must stop waxing or plucking, in addition to shaving. Instead, opt for hair removal products (depilatories), which do not cause razor bumps. However, they can irritate the skin and should be used only once or twice a week. Another option is removing hair permanently with laser treatments, or electrolysis. If you continue shaving, these tips might help alleviate the problem of razor bumps: • Always moisten your skin with water and mild soap

For berry beautiful skin It’s long been known that eating berries is excellent for their health-protective fiber and antioxidants. Now, new information about ellagic acid – an antioxidant found in numerous fruits, especially raspberries, strawberries and cranberries (as well as vegetables and nuts) – points to berries’ potential as a topical application to help prevent collagen destruction and moderate the inflammatory response. A great deal of well-designed research shows that many compounds in berries, whether applied to the skin or eaten in the form of whole fruit, are among the most protective nutrients your body can utilize. Until topical ellagic acid-based preparations are widely available, eating berries regularly is one of the best, not to mention tastiest, moves you can make for your skin and overall health.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Submissions by Rory Coughlan

Straight Armbar (JujiGatame) from Guard If you don’t know the armbar from the guard then you don’t know Brazilian jiu-jitsu! One of the unique things that sets Brazilian jiu-jitsu apart from other grappling styles is the emphasis on the guard and developing the ability to submit the opponent from the bottom. From the early UFC’s to the latest strike force event, from your local jiu-jitsu tournament to the Mundials, you’ll see the armbar from the guard over and over again. Interestingly when new students roll against a more experienced female BJJ practitioner, the most common surprise the new student gets is tapping out due to an armbar from her guard! This scenario has played itself out in countless dojos around the world. If you’re going to be dangerous off your back then you need to get good at the armbar from guard! This is even more true if you do no gi or mixed martial arts, because without the gi all your collar attacks will no longer be available. Most common error is the bottom practitioner doesn’t move their hips to create a perpendicular angle and tries to armlock the opponent with their bodies aligned straight on. In this position the armlock has little leverage and your guard can easily be passed. If you’re on the bottom in BJJ then you have to move your hips!

Americana Lock (Ude-Garami) from Side Control Side control is a great control position where you utilize your weight to control a struggling opponent, and two of the most effective, lowest risk submissions from side control are the Americana and Kimura locks. With or without gi, the Americana is always there, making it one of the more successful submissions in MMA.The Americana will teach you the BJJ principle of using two limbs of yours against your opponent’s single limb. And understanding the anatomy of the shoulder joint will help you use leverage to tap your opponent out. Common mistake is allowing the opponent’s elbow to drift away from their body. The further away his elbow is from his body the more it releases the tightness in the shoulder joint, and may even allow him to straighten the arm and escape.

Thailand’s Real Estate Roller Coaster Thailand’s real estate sector is more fun than a barrel of Lopburi monkeys, and when it comes to monkey business, there’s no place quite like Phuket. I can still remember back when Phuket conjured visions of multimillion-dollar villas on hillsides with breathtaking sea views, but something happened along the way. It seems as if Phuket has another facet of notoriety which involves court rooms, nasty legal disputes and fearful foreigners not knowing what their legal rights are concerning property leases and purchases. Imagine how it must look to visitors from abroad who fall in love with the country after only a few days and envision making their home in the Land of Smiles. Many begin such a journey in

Bangkok, where they may begin to do research and due diligence to learn how they can secure (own or lease) a home here. And that is where the Thailand real estate roller coaster begins. It starts with a slow, smooth climb upwards when the farang scans The Nation and sees the headline: “Property sector welcomes 99-year leases!” In reading the article by Somluck Srimalee, the visitor may be encouraged to envision that his dream can soon become a reality. Such an article touting 99-year leases is enough to get a tourist’s confidence level way up there as the Thai real- estate roller coaster ride reaches the top. The view is exciting and the possibilities are endless. Now it is time to start looking at properties, but first they must

decide where in Thailand they might like to live. So many foreigners have heard about the magic and mystique of Phuket and its incredible dream homes, and might even book a flight to the romantic island. But imagine that while they are relaxing on the plane, they open an updated copy of The Nation and see the headline: “Phuket Court declares long-term leases unenforceable, again!” Again! Oh my God! That’s when the once inspired property shopper’s head starts spinning and he begins to get nauseous as the real-estate roller coaster begins its downward plunge. This is just one more blatant example of how this country’s political loose cannons can damage and jeopardize an entire industry with a single newspaper headline.

It is sad, even pathetic, because there seems to be no stopping these political and judicial big shots from poisoning the legal system with their latest whims. Whims that not only dampen foreigners’ desires to live in Thailand, but that also negatively impact entire industries here. I can remember just a few years ago when a top political figure threatened to expose all the foreign-involved nominee companies holding land and house properties as assets. In fact, in my 26 years in Thailand I have seen such threats every other year or so, frightening—if not shocking— thousands and thousands of foreign property owners. Yet in my 26 years I have never seen the perpetrators of these threats get out of their easy chairs to implement such hostile warnings and ultimatums. Not once. Worse yet, they do not even have the decency to retract their frivolous threats. Nobody wins in situations like this. Nobody. Neither the Thai government nor the Thai people, and certainly not the foreigners. Every time I see something like this happening I’m reminded of one of my own favorite idioms: Why shoot yourself in the foot when your face is so much closer? What are they thinking? And when is this country going to enter the 21st century along with all its ASEAN neighbors? When does the xenophobia stop? When will this nation realize that we live in a global community that loves vacationing here and might also like to live here...in peace, absent the inexorable volatility and

insecurity? Just as every other economic sector, we want to promote an image of stability and dependability in Thai real estate. We want foreigners to visit Thailand knowing that they can lease or purchase a property here without the worry that some political figure or land office official will change the rules. Thailand has a bright future, and there is no time like the present to begin reshaping the views of government and citizens towards expats living here in their own homes! Thailand must stop this real estate roller coaster by instituting laws and regulations that lay the foundation for a smooth and easy path to foreign home ownership. We need only look around Thailand to recognize that the future is bringing us more and more fast transit opportunities. Whether it is the Chinese, Malaysians, Indonesians or Singaporeans coming to Thailand on projected high-speed trains or international guests arriving at new and revamped airline terminals, the world is on the move. And millions of global citizens are heading here. Let’s overhaul our approach to foreigners’ property interests with progressive laws and regulations that reflect their needs and security while at the same time fulfilling the goals of the Thai property industry and government officials that oversee it. Let’s leave the roller coasters for the entertainment venues and offer foreigners a safe, secure and truly world-class experience entering our Thai real estate market.

Legal Advice L E G A L A DV I C E Notarization of Documents

by Magna Carta Law Office

What is notarization? Notarization or notarial act is the official frauddeterrent process of examining, certifying and recordkeeping performed by a notary public or notarial services attorney that solidifies the important document as trustworthy. It is a requirement of many countries that personal or commercial documents originating from or signed in another country to be notarized before they can be officially used or before they can be legally recognized. Once notarized, a document will have more legal credibility. Why are we being asked to notarize certain documents? It is an assurance by a duly appointed and unbiased notary public that a document is authentic, that its signature is genuine, and that its signer acted without coercion or intimidation. A notary certifies that the person signing the document is who they claim to be and that they signed the document in front of a notarial services attorney. What is a notary public or notarial services attorney? A notary public is a person of integrity who is appointed to act as an impartial witness to the signing of an important transaction and to perform a notarial act which validates the transaction. A notary’s primary purpose is to prevent fraud and forgery by requiring the personal presence of the signer and satisfactorily identifying the signer. In Thailand, unlike other countries, only lawyers/attorneys are given the authority to function as notarial services attorneys through the regulations of the Lawyers Council. For an attorney in Thailand to become a notarial services attorney, he must pass a special legal training course from the Lawyers Council in order to get a notary’s license or attestation. What are the functions of a notarial services attorney? A notarial services attorney may execute the following functions: l Attestation of signature l Certifying true copy of documents l Attestation of ID such as passport, driver’s license

l Authentication of title deeds l Administrating an oath and affirmation l Testimony and oath and affirmation (affidavit) l Attestation of address l Confirmation of birth certificate l Certification of translations l Verification of documents l Power of attorney l Witnessing contracts and other related documents What documents normally require notarization? Examples of documents commonly notarized are passports, bank statements, land title deeds, contracts, power of attorney, applications for international visa, etc. Is notarization required by law? Yes, it is required for many documents. Certain affidavits, real estate deeds and other documents may not be legally binding unless they are duly notarized. How do I get my document notarized? Be sure to take an unsigned document to the notary as you will be required to sign them in front of the notarial services attorney. You will be asked to present your original proof of identification with photo and signature such as passport or other government issued ID. Your document shall be signed and marked with a stamp or seal to indicate that the signature is legitimate and it wasn’t somebody else pretending as you. Aside from the notary signature, what particular details must be supplied by the notarial services attorney? Be sure to check that the document has been marked with a seal or stamp. The notation must correctly identify the date and place of notarization, the full name, title, certificate validity date, and license number of the notarial services attorney. Does notarization mean that a document and its content are accurate or legal? Notaries are not responsible for the accuracy or legality of the content of the documents they notarize; they merely certify the identity of signers and have no obligation to verify a document’s content. The signers are responsible for the content of their documents. May a notary refuse to serve people? Notaries should not refuse to serve anyone because of religion, nationality or lifestyle. A notarial services attorney is only required by law to refuse service to anyone if they have a good reason to suspect fraud and the signer cannot reasonably prove his or her identity and general competence. Can a document with blank spaces be notarized? A blank line is an invitation for fraud. Prior to notarization, documents should be entirely completed except for the space intended for the signature of the bearer as the document must be signed in front of the notarial services attorney.

The evening event on April 22 made up the highlight of the weekend with a state-of-the-art fashion show that flaunted all the newest designs and styles and ways they can be combined with this season’s trendy looks. Furthermore, Bata launched its global brand manifesto #ComfortableWithIt and honored Adam Kost and Linda Zabilková, the two winners of its first Young Designer Challenge. But this was by far not all. Business News New online travel company offers a host of Visa and Thailand Ministry of options for the independent business traveler Tourism and Sports celebrate 20 Years of cooperation

The launch of the membershipbased online travel company BudgetBusinessTravel.com last month gives business travelers from around the world a chance to significantly change the way they plan and manage their itineraries for the better. This is made possible by the website’s customer oriented approach, their advantageous prices and their sophisticated rewards program. The number of people booking trips through online travel agencies (OTA) is growing steadily and shows no sign of stopping. Especially independent business travelers rely heavily on OTAs as they must book and manage their company trips by themselves rather than relying on expensive travel management firms. However, since the standard OTAs focus on leisure travelers, independent business travelers are often ignored as a target market. Having experienced this himself, the founder and owner of BudgetBusinessTravel.com, Steve Harrop, decided to create a booking engine that would address the needs of independent business travelers. Over the past year, he developed his business idea and built the BudgetBusinessTravel. com website. It features a clean, easy-to-navigate interface that focuses on user-friendliness and enables all members to quickly find and book the best rates on hotels and flights.

What sets BudgetBusinessTravel apart from other OTA however, is that, apart from being able to book their own trips, members have the option to request assistance from their personal account manager at any time, 24/7. This service will make it a lot easier for business travelers to update their itineraries and change bookings quickly and without having to pay unnecessary processing fees. Another strong benefit of BudgetBusinessTravel is their unique seven-level rewards program. Members can progress from one level to the next by booking more trips on the website or by referrals. That way they can unlock additional, concierge-like services and benefit from discounts on their trips. What makes this program unique though, is that

everybody maintains his level and its perks for life. Unlike other loyalty programs where participants lose their status after a certain time of inactivity, BudgetBusinessTravel guarantees its members lifetime access to their benefits. “Today close to 55 percent of travelers book their trips online and this number has been growing around 12 percent p.a. in recent years. Independent business travelers are a large part of this 55 percent but are often overlooked by the travel industry. This is why BudgetBusinessTravel really fills a gap in the world of OTAs. It addresses the needs of independent business travelers in a way that will make traveling for work a lot less stressful through high-quality customer service and an attractive rewards program,” explains Steve.

Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports, welcomed Chris Clark, Visa group executive for Asia-Pacific, at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. During the visit, Clark thanked Kobkarn for the 20 years of cooperation between Visa and Thai tourism authorities, and discussed opportunities to further strengthen their partnership and drive tourism in Thailand. The long-standing partnership between Visa and Tourism Authority of Thailand has resulted in a number of high-profile campaigns, boosting sustainable tourism revenues.

This year also marks the 18th anniversary of “Amazing Thailand Grand Sale”. Subsequently, campaigns such as “Thailand Spectacular Year End” and “Thailand Splash and Spice” were introduced to provide consistent attractions for visitors throughout the year. Most recently, Visa launched the “Not a Tourist: See Thailand through Local Eyes” campaign that invited residents of Thailand to share photographs of local activities, foods, and places on social media to encourage tourists to experience Thailand at a deeper and more meaningful level.

With a fresh, beachside ambience and easy access from Bangkok, the resort’ s location just north of Hua Hin makes it an excellent choice for companies, organizations or individuals looking to hold a successful, memorable event.

“While the accommodation, dining, spa, meeting and events facilities at the resort are second to none, it is our attentive and professional team that really makes the stay with us a special one,” says Nigel Tovey, the resort’ s general manager. “We do not simply meet, but exceed guests’ expectations, and we work tirelessly as a team to serve every group and individual’s unique hospitality needs.”

Business News Mӧvenpick Hotels and Resorts signs agreement to manage its first resort in the Maldives Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts has signed an agreement to manage its first resort in the Maldives. The planned 105-unit resort, Mӧvenpick Resort and Spa Kuredhivaru Maldives, will be situated on the remote Kuredhivaru Island in Noonu Atoll, providing a desirable sanctuary surrounded by

pristine natural beauty in the exclusive northern part of the Maldives. It is scheduled to open during the second quarter of 2018. The contemporary tropical resort will combine comfort and style, with 33 Beach Villas and 72 Over Water Villas. While designed as a destination for relaxing

and rejuvenating escapes offering a high degree of privacy, the resort will also feature an array of onsite recreational facilities to entertain a wide range of guests, from honeymooners to adventurous families. Located in one of the Maldives’ most idyllic atolls, the resort will be one of the few exclusive properties in the area to offer guests an opportunity to completely immerse themselves in spectacular scenery and untouched nature. Many of the surrounding islands are still uninhabited. “It’s no secret that the Maldives is a much sought after holiday destination that is still increasing in popularity and our spectacular resort represents a significant

New hotel opening pushes small hotel trend in Thailand

Eschewing the grand for the petite, Hua Hin’s newest retreat, Hotel Bocage, may be small with just six rooms, but it’s thinking big when it comes to luxury. The hotel, which soft-opened in April 2017, has opted for a small scale approach to the number of rooms, but has maxed out room area, privacy, views and sophistication. Sleek open plan rooms and suites with a crisp colour palette of white and grey, range in size from 42 to 75 square meters (452 to 807 square feet). Luxury Italian designer brands have been tapped for the decor with plush beds by Porro, contemporary sofas by Living Divani and freestanding tubs and sanitary ware by Antonio Lupi. Floor to ceiling sliding doors lead to private balconies, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, in this resort town located just 2.5 hours from Bangkok. Given its location atop the open-air lifestyle destination development Seenspace, which opened in December 2016, the hotel abstained from developing a restaurant in-house so that guests can explore the range of restaurants and cafes below. Alternatively, guests may request in room dining, prepared by one of the restaurants. For those who want to explore further afield, the property has partnered with Star Flag, a Mercedes Benz limo service for transfers and tours. Hotel Bocage also harnesses the latest in hospitality technology with the objective to streamline many elements of a stay and add an extra level of privacy for its guests. These include the option of accessing the guest room from the guest's smart phone. “In an area saturated with big resort-style properties, Hotel Bocage is forging a new path when it comes to intimate, uncomplicated stays,” said Grant Healy, CEO of Louis T Collection, the hotel’s management company. "Louis T Collection’s journey started by seeking

out unique properties and opportunities for authentic experiences that travellers of today are looking for. This is exactly what Duangrit Bunnag is trying to achieve through the creation of Hotel Bocage.” The acclaimed Thai architect, Duangrit Bunnag, is the mastermind behind the project. Bunnag’s work has received a number of awards, including most recently “Asia's Best Building of the Year 2015” for the Naka Phuket Resort and winner in 2015 of The Arcasia Awards for Architecture, an Asia-wide accolade. “It has always been a dream of mine to create a brand that allows me to have an ongoing relationship with a project. My dream is coming true through our creation of Hotel Bocage,” said Duangrit Bunnag. “I am blessed to be collaborating with partners that have the same heart filled spirit in Louis T Collection, Poro, Living Divana, Antonio Lupi, Design Hotels and Star Flag to make this a reality”. Bunnag and Louis T Collection have been working on the new development since entering a strategic partnership in June 2016. Through the new venture, Louis T Collection will be collaborating on the development on a number of projects with Bunnag and his design services arm, Brisk. Hotel Bocage is the second property in Thailand to come into Louis T´s fold. In 2015, the group acquired the Mantra Samui Resort in Koh Samui, which has reopened following extensive renovations. The company has historically strong ties to the country through its namesake Louis T Leonowens, a 19th century gentleman who made his fortune in Thailand, establishing the trading company, Louis T. Leonowens Ltd. The Louis T Collection is renewing this spirit of discovery today. For more information about Hotel Bocage and its three categories of accommodation, visit hotelbocage.com

entry for Mövenpick into this world-renowned island hideaway,” said Chief Development Officer and Senior Vice President Asia Andrew Langdon. “We look forward to introducing guests at Mӧvenpick Resort & Spa Kuredhivaru Maldives to Mӧvenpick’s signature style, hospitality and service once it opens in 2018.” Rich in marine life and excellent diving opportunities, the waters surrounding the resort will play an integral role in its appeal through a variety of above and underwater experiences. The resort will feature a comprehensive dive centre, beach sports activity centre, exclusive guest-only super yacht, as well as a small scale marine research centre and private marina.

The first Marine National Park (MNP) in the Maldives, which consists of a group of nine uninhabited islands commonly known as Edu Faru, is approximately 15 minutes from the resort via speedboat. The popular Christmas Tree Rock and Orimas Thila dive sites are also an easy boat ride away. Enticing wellness and

recreational facilities will include a luxurious spa with 14 private treatment rooms. Other features include a tranquil yoga pavilion, a state of the art gym, water sports centre, volleyball and tennis courts. The resort will also have a business centre, library and retail boutique to further ensure guests enjoy a convenient and carefree stay.

Youth Focus Neuroscience and Education by Justin Senior

Educationalists and school administrators are faced with a large number of competing educational theories and philosophies. These include, for example, the behaviourist theories advocated by Skinner; the Multiple Intelligence theory championed by Gardner and the constructivist theories of Piaget, Bruner and Vygotsky; in addition, there are the classroom methodologies of Maria Montessori and Reggio Emile. Today, educators continue to debate and argue about the pro's and con's of each theory and teachers continue to be inspired by their chosen method. All theories are open to critique: for example, the work of Piaget and Vygotsky

provides a starting point for constructive teaching methodology, but the ideas are not easily translated into teaching practice, especially where a large class is involved, including children of differing abilities, social backgrounds and with a prescribed curriculum to follow. Most of their social experiments involved one-on-one or small group works. The point is that educational theories are simply that: theories. They are not easily tested or proven, at least not scientifically. This is where the relatively new and exciting field of neuroscience comes in.This discipline, in its early stages, is going to make a huge impact on education and, in many cases, it will be able to once and for all support or dispel traditional theories and philosophies of learning. Neuroscience is an emerging discipline with huge implications for education, the classroom and student learning. New and developing technology has enabled much more sophisticated brain imaging and brain scanning, providing new and relevant information, especially with

regard to children’s social and emotional development, ADHD and autism. Professor Howard-Jones, neuroscientist from the Royal Society and Bristol University in the UK, informs that in the absence of any formal training in neuroscience, educationalists have developed a whole set of concepts that are incorrect and these wrongly influence teachers’ approaches in the classroom. And, as he points out, at the moment, teacher training courses have very little training about the workings of the brain. Neuroscience has thrown up some fascinating surprises that have started to question some traditional educational ideas, and perhaps the most interesting is the evidence presented that neuroscience

that does not support the theory of multiple intelligences as espoused by Howard Gardner. It was Gardner who believed that a person’s intelligence is made up of awhole range of abilities, with a single ability dominating. For example, a person may appear to be more logical/ mathematical; visual/spatial; verbal/linguistic; musical/ rhythmic; or kinaesthetic. Professor Howard Jones suggests that the same is true of the popular myth that people can be categorized as either left-brained learners or right-brained learners. Apart from beginning to dispel some ideas about learning, neuroscience has started to support other theories. Professor Usha Goswami, the director of the Centre for Neuroscience in Education, University of Cambridge, UK, has demonstrated how neuroscience supports some aspects of classical educational theory including Skinner and his behaviourist theory of repetition and reinforcement. The neuroscience has scientifically proven that repetition helps to strengthen neuronal networks. Other neuroscientists at the Royal

Society illustrate how the most important aspect of cognition is emotion. They elucidate how, when we think of Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy, for example, there is a fundamental connection between the more primitive emotional systems of anger, fear, fight, flight and our capacity to think and learn. In relating neuroscience to Piaget and Montessori, neuroscience supports both Piaget and Montessori because the brain is cognitively more open to learning during ‘critical periods’(Piaget), and ‘sensitive periods’(Montessori). This suggests that Piaget and Montessori were moving along the right lines because their ideas were supported by neuroscientific research. One of the main ideas postulated by Montessori is that children

learn best in an environment where they can learn by doing. This is supported by neuroscience research on rats, which proved that an enriched practical environment (which for rats includes spinning wheels, ladders and rat playmates) boosted rats’ cognitive development, with the rats showing up to 25 percent more synapses per neuron than rats in a nonenriched environment. What all this means is that educationalists, stuck in the academic world of debate and analysis of traditional theories, and head teachers and teachers, who adopt and impose their chosen methods of teaching, will have to start working together with the neuroscientists. In fact, educationalists and neuroscientists have started to work together and this should develop hugely. Neuroscience is going to make a huge impact and teachers, teacher-trainers and, furthermore, government educational departments, will need to take on board and adapt to the findings provided by neuroscience. Justin Senior is Year 6 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Teaching: Walking a Tightrope by Jay Chambers Have you ever watched one of the circus performers walking a tightrope? Their balance is so perfect, yet so fragile. One misstep could send them plummeting to the ground, never to rise again… unless they have a net of course. With their fantastic skill they are able to exhibit magnificent feats on just a thin area of cord. As they walk on their hands, do back flips or even push carts across the wire their acts are beautiful yet terrifying to behold. Teaching can be just as beautiful and terrifying. Think about it. A single person stands at the front of a class of two to two hundred students and expects them to focus their attention solely upon him/her simply in order to learn. If the student doesn’t feel that what the teacher is saying is worth listening to, then what is to keep them quiet and attentive? What if the student is having a bad day and decides to disrupt the class? What if he/she just doesn’t feel like listening and wants to cause some problems? No teacher is perfect, and it is likely that all teachers have had such a student at one time or another. So there you are, up in front of everyone trying to teach, and one or more students decide to make your life more interesting, and not in a good way. What do you do? Do you lose your temper? Do you decide to

avoid confrontation altogether and simply ignore the problem? There are many opinions and studies about what should be done at this point. There are as many good ideas as bad and not all techniques work with all students. There are also many mistakes that we as teachers make. One of the most common mistakes teachers make is a human one- we lose our temper. Teacher mentor Adam Waxler says in his article entitled, Effective Classroom Management Is Difficult When You're Angry!, “It is very important that teachers do not ‘lose it’ no matter how much a student tests you. If students see that they have angered you, they know they have beaten you at the discipline game. The bottom line is, you must control your anger if you want to be an effective teacher.” The main problem is that losing your temper is the most natural and often the easiest thing to do. You yell at the student and they stop talking and listen to you, right? It

may seem like it has worked at first, but many children love to test adults. If and when they act up once more are you just going to go off on them again? How many times will you lose your temper in front of the class before they have decided that it is a common thing and not worth worrying about anymore? It is here that you’ve lost your students’ respect and chance at holding their attention without loud theatrics. You’ve completely lost your balance and fallen off the tightrope. Do you have the net of an able principal or director to back you up and help out with the situation or will you splat upon the ground as the students take the tale of crazy teacher so-and-so home to their parents who come to school to complain about the lack of discipline in your classroom? A well thought out classroom management plan that is skillfully utilized is a beautiful thing to behold. The students respond to the teacher both because of respect and that they realize that he/ she is in control. Time spent on yelling and threatening the students is instead spent on instruction and learning. So teachers, please, before you lose your students’ respect, look up different classroom management techniques on the internet or ask a veteran teacher’s advice. It is far more effective than losing your balance, with or without a net. Jay Chambers is Year 1 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That King of Kings not royal stuff

The Warner Bros’ blockbuster King of Kings (1961) was an attempt to cash in on the popularity of Ben Hur (1959) by once again combining the story of Jesus with a miscellany of sub-plots. Even the giant letters carved in stone in the King of Kings title design are an obvious mimic from the recent predecessor. The problem none the less is that King of Kings doesn’t have the content and style to pull off a successful comparison with knockout films such as Ben Hur or The Ten Commandments, Spartacus or even the faulty but entertaining Cleopatra. In a word, King of Kings is

boring. The movie depends too much on the narrator Orson Welles telling us what’s going on, how people feel and what’s the significance rather than letting the film properly show the story. Actually, Orson realized the movie provided poor drama and tried to get his name removed from the list of credits at the last minute. Too much in this story of the Christ is missing. The best of the miracles are not shown on-screen, including the feeding of the 5,000 and the walking on water, giving the impression again that the movie is a series of loosely connected incidents rather

Jeffrey Hunter looks for something better

than a seamless tale. In comparison, The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur are exciting from the very beginning with plagues and pestilences and jealousies and exciting chases all holding the attention of the cinema audience and later the DVD addict. In particular, Ben Hur weaves the story of Jesus cleverly within the adventures of the main character played by Charlton Heston. But King of Kings has no real drama, just a series of snippets from the first century of the Christian era. True, in King of Kings, we have Jeffrey Hunter playing Jesus. But he lacks majesty and is obviously just another actor with blue eyes and a serious look. When he preaches, he does so in a low voice which obviously could not have been heard by the multitude gathered at the Mount. He answers their questions such as “How is it possible for me a tax gatherer to enter the Kingdom of Heaven?” in canned tones as if he is the chairman of a sixth form debating society. Other characters waft in and out without being part of any interwoven plot. John the Baptist (Robert Ryan) isn’t

allowed to do much acting and appears as another cardboard cut-out, howbeit one without a head towards the end. The waspish Frank Thring, who brilliantly played Pontius Pilate in Ben Hur, spends most of his time on screen as king Herod lusting after his step-daughter and trying to make Jesus perform miracles. Needless to say he fails all round. Guy Rolfe plays the high priest Caiphas but isn’t given any scope to show his mettle beyond moaning that governing Judaea is very difficult with all the factions and revolutionaries. Indeed, the only actor to shine in the entire movie is the relatively unknown Harry Guardino who plays the freedom fighter or terrorist, the rascal Barabbas. In a complete movie devoted to Barabbas, Antony Quinn was to take the lead role. Since the treatment of Jesus is too pious to draw the crowds to the theatre or to the DVD recorder the sub-plots needed to be very important. But even potentially salacious diversions such as the dance of Salome and the suggestions of incest in the ruling family of Judaea are

The huge letters in stone remind us of Ben Hur not built up to any sort of significance. Interestingly, the crucifixion scene at the end is about the same length as Salome’s dance and equally unconvincing. The execution of Jesus shows none of the gruesomeness which accompanied the Roman way of death. As a result, we are left wondering what all the fuss was about. As a grand historical epic with a cast of thousands, King

of Kings was meant to be a follow-up on the success of Ben Hur. Although the landscape in King of Kings looks authentic, with its desert and rocky wilderness, and the sets and costumes are generally good, there isn’t enough in the plot to hold the attention of the watcher. \This may be why, in the cinemas of the 1960s, many patrons failed to return after the curtain came down at half time for the Interval.

Don’t just consider yourself when making decisions as whatever you decide needs to provide some benefits to your partner as well. You aren’t neglecting your needs but instead are coming up with a compromise that will help the both of you. You will be showing that you are considerate of your partner’s needs and do your best to meet them. Relationships are at their most rewarding when they strike a balance between meeting the needs of both partners. A good thing to keep in mind is that if you are both looking out for each other then it’s assured that both your needs are being provided for. 2. Reliability

3. Be A Little Vulnerable

by Professor Blunt

quarius (Jan23 AFeb22) With Mars crossing

Saturn, your life isn’t looking good. Somebody who suspects you are naive is likely to make you an empty promise which will lead you stray. For example, you must beware of taking out expensive medical insurance which kicks in only when you are on your deathbed. Also be careful about your personal information as you are somewhat of a fool. It’s plain stupidity to write your PIN number on the back of the card. Please try to learn. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Don’t let anyone convince you to do something you don’t want to do. If you can’t swim avoid the highest diving board at all costs. With the Milky Way in turmoil again, you need to be on your guard for a partner or lover who has evil intent. If he or she suggests moving to a high-rise condominium without safety rails, then expect the worst. The stars agree you are definitely of limited intelligence. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) Love and sex are decidedly on the agenda for Saturday and Sunday this week, although the position of Gemini in the skies suggests that these will cost you even more money than they usually do. It is reasonably clear that you will be going on a long journey within the next two weeks, so we do hope this will not prove to be in a hearse making the tedious trip to Phuket central crematorium. It’s far too expensive for a cheapskate like you. Taurus (Apr23-May22) Beware of being taken advantage of by your colleagues in the office. The ham and tomato sandwiches you take there are certainly yours and you should not feel under any obligation to share them with the riff-raff which make up the working population today. Beware of applying for another job right now. The stars predict that any new employer would discover that your PhD thesis was copied from the internet. We can supply the website if needed. Gemini (May23-Jun22) You are a silly, self-confident prig who refuses to take any notice of what your friends and relations are telling you. In fact you are the sort of person who tried to upgrade his cabin on the Titanic even after the captain gave the order to abandon ship. This is the month for you to consider home improvements which will benefit you greatly. Repairing the holes in the roof will certainly save you keeping buckets all over the bedroom. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) Go over your personal papers now and look at your options for saving money and reducing costs. But do remember you are stupid and get somebody else to check the details. For example, buying a load of discounted frozen food at the supermarket is a waste of time and money if you also disconnect the fridge to cut down on electricity. In ancient Carthage they used to strangle at birth babies like you.

You need to share yourself with your partner so the relationship does not become one-sided. When only one partner does all the confiding, there can be a buildup of resentment and mistrust. Open yourself up to your partner and share your innermost thoughts and feelings with them. A partner who is going to open up to you will only do so when they feel a certain level of safety. For this to happen you need to show compassion, be a good listener, and provide a shoulder to lean on. 4. Consistency

 Consider your words and how they might be affecting your partner. If you are planning on making a major shift or adjustment in your life, let them know ahead of time and discuss it with them. Your partner will then not be caught by surprise and will feel that they are an important part of the relationship. Changing your mind from day to day about what you feel is important to you will only make your partner wonder what is going on and disrupt their level of trust. Your partner will feel constantly bewildered and unsafe in a rocky relationship. 5. Practice Truthfulness

 Staying true to your promises is important – regardless of the size of the commitment. If you’re going to rendezvous with your partner at a set time, make sure you’re prompt. If you promise to get the groceries on the way home, then make sure it gets done. It goes without saying that the major promises of fidelity, being there through sickness and health, and for richer or poorer are also a big part of the equation.

It’s rarely okay to lie – except for when you are planning a surprise birthday party. Even small lies have a habit of ruining a relationship. When you are caught out (and you will be!) your partner will always be wondering whether you are telling the truth. (Jul23-Aug22) Expect to  Leo face emotional problems that stem from someone’s overindulgence, such as being sick on your carpet after eating too many chocolates. Mental and physical stimulation will lead to new beginnings but could lead to a term of imprisonment if you try to make your sexual realties come to life. Excessive boasting on Friday could land you in big trouble especially if you wear false teeth. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) Discover new places or interests this month which will broaden your horizons. But you must be realistic in your aims. Planning a trip to the Amazon rain forests is a complete waste of time since you can’t even afford the cost of a replacement passport. You may want to distance yourself from a person who has the ability to cause you grief, including all judges and prison officers. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Changes to the way you live are absolutely vital for you at this time to restore equilibrium. However, you must be careful to choose wisely as starting smoking again or playing Russian roulette could prove to be counterproductive. As you are extremely unpopular and have many enemies, try to avoid looking over your shoulder all the time. However, this rule can be rescinded when you are driving a car. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) Learning about different lifestyles will help you choose what is best for you even though you are an unashamed bigot. Thus finding out about Israeli kibbutz will avail you nothing as you always vote for neo-fascist parties at election time and argue in favour of the president of Iran in discussions at the pub. Broaden your options by doing something academic, such as playing darts or learning dominoes. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Use your expertise today or tomorrow to replace what is faulty and you could well impress someone of influence. If you are good on electrics and happen to be in the house of the Mafiosi when the lights fail, don’t hesitate to offer to restore the power even if this involves taking off the ropes and chains. But don’t try to reach a deal as they will simply shoot you in the head before calling in a proper electrician. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan22) Communication is highlighted in your horoscope today. You must be open and candid with the people around you and speak frankly to them. This will not be easy for the likes of you with such a sordid sex life and so many gambling debts, but you must certainly try. You may receive an e-mail about your job from a stranger, but do not become too excited. It is likely to be a blackmail threat with a totally obscene attachment concerning you.

Local Sports Hot Day , Hot Rounds PSC tropical golf from BJ's by Jeff Wylie

Phoenix Gold Eighty eight players, including a good field of 14 ladies, made the short journey last month to the Phoenix course, where we played

Franberg (22) with 38 points while another point back was Ronny Walfridsson (30) on 37 points. The B flight, for handicaps 15 to 19, was a little more tightly contested, with

the mountain and ocean combination. Although the weather was hot and humid, there was a light breeze to keep it from being too oppressive, with the groups progressing at a steady pace. We played from the white tee markers today, with some being back, while others were a little forward, but still the course provided a solid challenge for all, while still ensuring the integrity of the daily handicap adjustments. Most months there is one, or sometimes several outstanding performances for the tournament. Last month that mention should probably go to Fynn Csizmadia (10) in the A flight mens’ and May Suiye (17) in the ladies. Fynn winning the low gross with 78, 2nd in the A flight and a technical prize, while May shot the day’s best score to win the ladies and got the long drive. Regular player Heikki Viljakainen (21) was the highest scoring male golfer with 43 points on the day, leading the C grade home by a clear five points from Kjell

Philippe Pruvot (18) the clear winner on 41 points, while Martin Kempton (15) recorded 38 points to get 2nd spot, a point ahead of Alan Gallagher (18) on 37 points, to go with his long drive on 18. The A flight (0 – 14) was the tightest of the day, with Daniel Grob (13) the winner with 41 points, while the 2nd spot went to the afore mentioned Fynn Csizmadia with 40 points, 3rd spot on 39 points went to Johan Smedsjo (14). Special mentions go out to multiple winners in the technical prizes, getting their maximum two prizes, among others, were Jerry Langer and Pekka Saarenpaa. BBQ King Dave was at it again, who with his capable staff kept all attendees well satisfied with their tasty offerings for the night. We will all look forward to another successful tournament with this month’s event at Phoenix on May 30. Contact Shane on 0859459689 to ensure your preferred tee time.

Rudy runs up another win by Cassa

Mountain Shadow A few cars and bus loads of golfers made their way to the Mountain Shadow course and teed up off the white markers today, in sunny and hot conditions. This course offers value for money and is a challenge to any golfer with possibly one of the most challenging holes of the many courses within an hour of Pattaya. The hole referred to is

the lengthy par 5 14th dogleg left around the water dam and players are delighted and totally satisfied if they achieve bogey. At least this hole is fairly indexed at number two, unlike Treasure Hill’s signature “Crocodile hole”, the similar par 5 sixteenth hole which is rated at index 15! Hello? Most players struggled to play to par, however, Rudy Regenass ( a regular visitor from Cape Town, South Africa) notched up another win

Khao Kheow (Stableford) We nearly always book this in as the first Tuesday outing of the month because, to put it politely, it is a great course who look after us. We have been booking the course for many years now and feel comfortable turning up there and know it will be a relaxed day. We also know the day will be on a tremendous course and the only negative side is that some of our golfers consider the course too difficult for them and sometimes give it

Winner and Second

and as said the weather was great, the fairways all round were good, the rough was as you would expect at K.K. It was apparent as soon as we chipped onto the first green that the green was going to be fast and so it proved all the way around. Indeed with fine fairways, tough rough and fast greens the biggest worry most of us brought up was the ball seemed to deviate as it approached the hole. I cannot remember the number of times the ball seemed to be in the hole a couple of inches from the hole and missed. I thought it was just me but several other players also made the point. It seemed the hole was always on the slant, the course had set the hole in the most difficult place. We all suffered from missed puts that should have gone in. Mind this is a quality course and they sure know how to screw with your

brain. As the round went on, it seemed to get windier and the sky darkened, until as our group played the last hole it started to sprinkle with rain, and as we put the clubs in the car the heavens opened. Of course I was sad for those still out on the course even if their score cards were soggy when they handed them in. Back at BJ’s, it was soon into the results and this was quite easy, especially on the ‘near pins’ side as Mashi had a clean sweep winning them all. In the results, the winner on the day was Derek Brook with 35 points ahead of Dick Warberg in second with 33 points and in third was Landis Brooks with 31 points. Weird this points scoring, however, K.K. always is testing. As the Scribe won it was time for a few ‘Cold Uns’ and so it was. T.T.F.N. Near Pin: Mashi (3)

Pattana Golf Club It was a small field of 14 that decided to take on Pattana GC on this bank holiday here in Pattaya. We must thank the course management for the price that they gave us for the day. Has been a while since we have played this course and by all reports the course is in good condition. Weather started well but as the day went on the warmer it got. It was a warm day but it is summer and we need to remember this! We played stableford and went from the white tees (ladies from the red) with all novelties in play. People had decided to do something different on the day as the course was quiet, not much traffic at all. Only one flight today and it was Sal Brizzi that showed the way with a very tidy score. Following were Steve Younger and with his 37 points (paring the fourteenth!), closely followed by Stuart Rifkin on 36 points (also paring the fourteenth!) and the ever present Alex Field a couple of shots further back with 34 points. All three players had 16 handicaps. a miss. That really says it all, go here and your golf will be tested as will you. Make a bad shot and it is difficult to get back in position without losing a shot. On this day the test was to be the A & B nines, in that order, and while we know it is a severe test that is what we go to a golf course for. That and a great day out. The weather on the day was really fine at the start but as we approached the last few holes the sky opened and the deluge began. We started on the A nine,

Peter Brickwell was made welcome, visiting from Brisbane, Australia. During the following presentations, Peter noticed that someone had written his name on an NTP marker twice. He rebuked the player and the player defended himself stating he only wrote his name down once! It transpired that the player had written his nick name of Cassa down and when one of his playing partners (an overseas visitor, Irish no less!) walked off the green, he noticed that Stuart’s name was not on the marker, so took it upon himself to do so, thinking he was doing the right thing! unknowingly bestowed upon Stuart Rifkin following an argument at the bar one day. The argument being that there was no difference between a “stew and a casserole”. This argument was settled when legendary Geoff Mellon declared that a casserole was a flash name for “a stew”. The following day, Stuart almost had a hole in one, with the ball ending up a foot past the hole. Stuart was consoled with the fact that at least he would win the NTP prize for that hole. When the hole for that NTP was announced at presentations, he was so sure he had won that he got off his stool and was walking up to accept his prize when he heard “and the winner is Cassa!” Dumbfounded and embarrassed, he turned around a walked back to his stool wondering who the f@#k Cassa was who stole his prize.

A quick explanation was made, and thus the nick name stuck! Following presentations the resident collector D-for was passed around for donations to add to the growing tally of baht that has been so generously given by players and patrons of the Growling Swan. All donations are pooled and when sufficient funds allow, a children’s orphanage or school benefits with products needed. Several hundred thousand baht has been raised and donated by the Growling Swan to date. For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage women to play. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086.

Local Sports The postman delivers! by Steve Ellison

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees It’s the merry, merry month of May already so get ready for some very hot golf in the next few weeks. Water and electrolytes are the beverages of choice that will help you get through this month, one of our hottest. High temperatures and high Stableford scoring seemed to be on the cards this week. You needed to have bettered your handicap if you were looking at getting any handsome man vouchers from Capt. Phil. this Monday. J.P. Thomas was in the money, but she was there for the near pin win. At the 37 point mark, Gary Emmett was back on the podium for third. Marky must have thought he had it in the bag with 41 on the card, but Dave Ferris had other ideas. The postman delivers again and a terrific 42 puts Dave on top today.

Kris K., Alan Rothwell and Frank Tordeur Parichat Links – Stableford – White Tees On fire, that’s all you can say about Frank Tordeur’s round out there today as our visiting Belgian was a massive 11 strokes ahead of the field for the biggest margin of victory this year. Stalwart Kenny Aihara could only manage 33 points and our new Aussie mate Des Leonard took 29, as well as the near pin. The vans were back at 2:30 this afternoon, so that makes for an under four hour round and just 25 minutes to and from the golf course. This course is not everyone’s cup of tea, but clubhouse chatter was very positive on the whole. The condition of the course was great and, if not for a couple of long carries off the tee, Parichat would score an A on anyone’s report card. Results: 1st – Frank Tordeur (20) 44 points 2nd – Kenny Aihara (6) 33 points 3rd – Des Leonard (19) 29 points Burapha A & B – Stableford – White Tees We don’t get out to Burapha much in the high season but when summertime comes

Mountain Shadow (Blue tees) Stableford What a difference a few days make, Friday we endured torrential rain, strong wind, thunder and lightning, today was about as different as it comes. No wind, extreme temperatures and high humidity were the order of the day. Some complained of extreme fatigue or heat exhaustion after the round. A message to all in those conditions is to stay hydrated, take shade wherever possible and if necessary take a cart, it is clear that the mental game is the first to go in those conditions A good turnout of 14 for the first game of the month. We were treated to an empty course in very good condition, clearly benefiting from recent rain. This is a challenging course by any measure where many players fail to register a decent score and today was no different with most scores in the vicinity of 30 points. As is usually the case one player stands out and today it was Les Cobban who soared above the rest with a very well compiled 36 points. Nice to have Jim Payne make an appearance. Results: 1st - Les Cobban (9) 36 points 2nd - Jim Payne (33) 33 points 3rd - Keith Allen (12) 32 points Near pins: Keith Allen, Ross Schiffke, Les Hall, Jim Payne Pleasant Valley (Blue tees) Stableford Our second round of the month at a course that always generates heated debate and controversy. Today as before it started with check-in where we discovered that there was only 100 baht difference between walking and having a cart, a curious pricing

structure indeed and one that seems designed to force players to use a cart. On the course, there was a total absence of red or yellow hazard markers, surely something that could be easily and cheaply remedied. Another issue was that some of the bunkers needed mowing and the grass replaced with sand. There is always the perennial issue of internal OB. The rationale behind it is to prevent people on the 11th fairway from being hit by a ball teed off from the 10th and hit deliberately onto the 11th fairway cutting the corner. In reality, this is unlikely to happen as a second shot from the 11th fairway to the 10th green would be far more difficult than one played from the correct fairway. Furthermore, it doesn’t prevent balls from players with a slice from entering the 11th fairway from the 10th tee. Despite all of the above, the course was in overall very good condition, greens were a bit slow due to recent rain, and occasionally balls plugged in wet fairways. Scoring was a bit of a mixed bag, Geoff Parker was the only player to beat par with a fine 38 points There were a number of curious rounds with people starting well only to fade away and others doing the exact opposite. Once again rain played a part with a short downpour on the closing holes drenching everybody, otherwise, an enjoyable day's golf was had by all. around, it is always on our playlist. This is a beautiful golf course and always in top condition. When I booked here last month, the desk advised that coring and sanding was being done on the other tracks, which was an appreciated courtesy. Frank Tordeur got cut a stroke but still continued his top form and finished on the podium again with a 39 on the card for third. Kris K. is our buddy from the opening of The Golf Club 10 years ago. He has his PGA teaching credentials now so if there is a course out there that needs a great Thai-American pro, just get in touch here. Kris had a great day and finished with a big red 40 circled at the top of his card. The mayor of New York had his best ever round in Thailand and ate up this course. Playing off a six handicap, Alan’s 42 was a fantastic round at level par. Nice shootin’ there Mr. Mayor! Oh yes, he also took the Caddy Smile near pin as well, not bad going in this heat.

Tom terrific at Pattavia! by Derek Brook

Ross Schiffke and his caddy bad omens for a pleasant rain-free day of golf. Dark ominous clouds hovered above as we arrived at the course and the caddies added to the gloom by suggesting rain covers be put on prior to loading bags onto golf carts. Despite all of this the weather gods smiled benevolently on us and we enjoyed some of the most pleasant conditions we could experience in Thailand. Very mild temperatures, no wind or glaring sun were the order of the day. The course was in fine condition except for the bunkers, many of which were still full of water from the overnight rain. Scoring varied from excellent to very poor, with a few players submitting uncharacteristically low scores. Best round of the day went to Ross Schiffke who seems to have very quickly found his winning way with a score of 37 points. Michael Brett had a personal best 23 on the front nine which was followed by the collapse of the century with only 12 on the back. Welcome back to Colin Greig who looks to still be finding his game, however, two near pins suggests it’s not far away.

Pattavia - St Greetings to our huge fan base. Word is we have three regular readers now. Time to start charging subscription fees. This Friday the Tropical Golfers played on Thursday. Some holiday that many Thais didn't even know about increased the rates on Friday, so the adjustment was made. The destination this Thursday was Pattavia. A longer drive than most but the roads in have steadily improved. Some days seem to be cursed. Simple things made difficult. It all started when one golfer missed the fact we were playing a day early, despite the change being well advertised and remembered by all the rest. This golfer was the important kind – the kind with a car. Scramble time. Then another car went

to that other “P” course, Pleasant Valley. Eventually we all met at Pattavia and under hot weather started the round. Pattavia is in good condition, but those greens, in good shape by the way, are tricky. People who advise to “hit below the pin” obviously overestimate our skills. The round over it was time to have the presentation, this time at the course. Nice. The scores were pretty good, but at the top Tom Herrington (c/h 17) won the day with a most excellent 41 points! Tom didn't collapse on the back this time. Next returning Joel Flor (30) returned in style with a enviable 40 points, followed by the ever present Mashi (17) with 39. May our next round be trouble free! Near pins: Joel Flor, Dick Warberg

You & Your Pets Love Bites? Virtually all cat lovers have been the victims of unexpected—and undeserved— bites. That furry little angel might be purring contentedly as you gently scratch behind her ear or playfully rub her tummy. But in the next moment she suddenly nips at your hand and bounds off. Is it a love bite? A not so subtle message that she’s had enough? Or an angry, feral response to being touched? Cat lovers are left bewildered by the lightening-fast change in attitude. So, too, are animal behaviorists who have studied the phenomenon unique to the feline species. But they do offer some suspicions. One theory is that the nipping is a manifestation of status-induced

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. aggression in which cats decide to take control of the situation. Or, they suggest, it is possible that the cat has tried subtly to let you know she’s had enough petting or rubbing and, when you fail to take the hint, she demonstrates her irritation more dramatically with a nip. More esoterically, perhaps, is the idea that a particular cat may be responding to some neurologically significant

negative stimulus prompted by lengthy stroking. None of which should preclude you from petting, enjoying and playing with your cat. But if nipping is a problem and you are unable to detect signals that she’s had enough, talk to your veterinarian. He or she might be able to point to the subtle warning signs before you are attacked.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well-being.

This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago. When she was just a kitten she had a broken leg, so missed the opportunity to be chosen. She loves helping in the garden but is just as happy indoors.

Splash

This friendly girl came to us with 2 lovely kittens both of which were quickly re-homed. Splash has lost the sight in her left eye but that does not hinder her at all. Sadly it means that noone has chosen her yet.

If your pet stops breathing, take a deep breath That’s right. Take a deep breath and stay calm. Do not panic. Calmly open your pet's mouth and gently grasp his tongue. Pull it forward (out of the mouth) until it is flat to clear his airway. Check the animal's throat, using a flashlight if possible, and remove any foreign objects that might be blocking the airway. Now perform rescue breathing by closing your pet's mouth (hold it closed with your hand) and breathing with your mouth directly into its nose until you see the animal's chest expand. Once the chest expands, continue the rescue breathing once every 4 or 5 seconds. NOTE: First aid administered

Buzz & Holly

We are trying to find a loving new home for Holly and her kitten Buzz, they were rescued on Christmas day from one of our local temples. Holly has now been neutered and they are both vaccinated: the pair are very friendly and playful and really need to go to a new home together if possible.

Wilber

your pet’s life until you can get to a veterinarian for proper treatment.

Cat Corner Tip

Going to the Dogs...

June is Adopt-a-Cat month

Next month would be an ideal time to adopt a furry friend from Sandra and Paul at Cats4You (see right-hand column) during Adopt-a-Cat month. Many loveable cuties of all ages are available free and user ready. In fact, the British couple are featuring a June Special: “Adopt one cat, get the second cat FREE.” Caring for two cats is no more time-consuming than caring for just one. In fact, less time-consuming because cats and kittens are unbelievably self-sufficient at entertaining one another, thereby relieving you of the need to constantly play and cuddle with them. Beyond which, two cats provide twice as much companionship, loving and fun for you. Having a cat or two does come with the responsibility of maintaining your new friend’s good health and youthfulness. Toward that end, here are five tips: 1-Provide a routine. Set a daily feeding schedule and stick to it. Cats do not like changes or surprises. They can result in “illness behaviors” such as poor appetites, vomiting and not using the litter box. 2-Create an interesting environment.
