Pattaya or Siem Reap?
T
here is much talk these days about the respective merits of retiring long-term to Thailand or Cambodia. Pattaya Today has conducted a research project which concentrates specifically on the respective merits and drawbacks of Pattaya and Siem Reap, the largest provincial centres in the respective countries. Several correspondents said that the starting point for them was the visa situation. “Compared with Thailand,” claimed British expat Dennis Knight, “it is very easy to obtain a 12-month visa in Cambodia and there is no need to deposit funds in a local bank or to prove overseas income.” He explained that local visa agents in Siem Reap could arrange a year’s permit by simply paying US$200-300,
provided that the applicant obtained a general visa rather than a tourist one on entering the country. Nonetheless, it should be noted that both Thailand and Cambodia are in process of reviewing their long-term visa policies. The Thai government has endorsed a proposal to introduce a 10-year visa although the detail and the regulations are still being worked out. It is not even clear if the proposed visa will replace the current one-year retirement option, or be an additional option, and whether or not it will be available only in the applicant’s home country. In Cambodia, there are rumours of impending changes too, the most likely being a requirement to lodge a cash sum in a local bank and the possibility of providing three-year, multiple-entry
tourist visas to supplement the current 30 days on arrival policy. John Humphreys, another British expat who moved to Siem Reap from Pattaya last year, said “The daily cost of living in Siem Reap is certainly cheaper than in Pattaya though the gap is closing now, especially if you are converting pounds to dollars (the main currency used in Cambodia).” He felt that Siem Reap was much quieter and relaxed than Pattaya. “I don’t need to bother with 90 days reporting or the TM 30, and the town now has an identity of its own rather than being the place which happens to be near the Angkor Wat temple complex.” On the other hand, John felt that Pattaya had the edge when filling your Continued on page 4

News Chinese tourist Drug bust a bust Teen knifed in gang battle scammed
Chinese tourist Jianying Ding was robbed of 10,000 baht by an unknown scam artist in Naklua. The woman said a Thai man approached her asking what Chinese currency looked like. She showed the man her money, which he handled and returned to her, but not before surreptitiously pocketing 2,000 yuan. Ding did not notice until later that the funds had been stolen. Police are reviewing CCTV videos.
A drug bust gone bad developed when the Bureau of Narcotics and Pattaya City police arranged a buy along the railway road in Soi Khao Noi. Before delivery of 400 yaba tablets and 100 grams of methamphetamine (ice), the suspect had demanded that 70,000 baht be deposited in the bank account of Suwicha Paha. At set time and place, the suspect apparently spotted police in the area and sped away. Police chased after him but lost sight of Paha’s car, which later was abandoned at a gas station in North Pattaya. Police seized the vehicle in which they found drug residue and the suspect’s bank book. The search for Paha continues.
Security guard Police ignore molests child assault on Indian
Security guard Rian Ngahorn was caught fondling a 12-yearold girl outside a convenience store. When the child screamed, a passerby rushed to her aid and made a citizen’s arrest of the 42-year-old assailant, who was reportedly drunk.
Husband returns to dead wife
The lifeless body of Mareeya Anlohphudee was found by her husband outside their house when he arrived home at 3 am. When the van driver discovered his wife on the ground and heard his child crying in the house, he called the police. The police found no bodily injuries on the victim and concluded there was no crime.
Indian businessman Manit Yanhona reported to the police that his companion was assaulted by security personnel of a bar. He said he, his brother and several customers approached an Indian bar on Walking Street where a Russian woman stood with a security guard. When his brother asked the lady why she was looking at him, the Russian acted annoyed and the guard grabbed his brother’s neck while the woman punched him. Police were summoned but ignored their complaint, instead telling Manit and his group to leave the premises. The businessman filed a formal complaint at the police station against the club and police.
A group of teenagers fighting on Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya left one teen lying on the ground with a knife wound to his hip. The boy, Ton, told police he had been stabbed by 22-year-old Nattapong Luang-on. Nattapong claimed that he and his 17-year-old girlfriend— Ton’s ex—were to meet Ton to retrieve the girl’s clothing. When the couple arrived at the scene, Ton and several other teenagers challenged Nattapong to a fight and broke a tail light on his pickup truck. In return, Nattapong said, he stabbed Ton. All parties were invited to the police station for further questioning.
Child caught stealing
A nine-year-old boy caught stealing coins from washing machine on Soi Arunothai was turned in to police. The apartment caretaker, Narong Sunpratum, had been sleeping in the area and heard the boy trying to open the coin box attached to a washing machine. He grabbed the child, then found that the three other coin boxes were already broken into. Police asked the boy about the money and were told that his older brother had it. The boy was turned over to the social welfare service.

time. “Pattaya has a much broader choice of entertainment and things to do, including the beaches. Expats have formed their own clubs and societies but there is nothing comparable in Siem Reap where the number of Europeans, Australians and Americans is much smaller.” He added that most expats he knew were working in Siem Reap, so had less time on their hands, and he praised the large number of high-quality restaurants, Asian and European, to be found throughout the inland resort. Other correspondents echoed these sentiments and stressed that Cambodians in general were a very welcoming people. “I’m never lonely here,” claimed Dan Revere from the USA, “as it is very easy to strike up a conversation and most locals know some English.” He explained that he was on a very limited budget and ate daily in one of the cheap eateries in Sok San road, a tourist belt, where a meal can be bought for as little as two dollars. “I’m surviving cheerfully here on about 500 dollars a month, including a cheap room two miles out of town, and I certainly couldn’t do that in Pattaya. Other expats in Siem Reap warned that hospital facilities tended to be poorer than in Pattaya, pointing out that some serious illnesses still required a trip to Thailand. They also pointed out there is no public bus service of any kind, so it is a question of negotiating a fare with
the individual motorbike taxi or tuk-tuk driver. “At first you tend to pay too much – four dollars rather than two – but it is just part of the learning curve,” said a Frenchman who has lived in Siem Reap for three years with his Thai wife. “Pattaya was just too frenetic for us,” he claimed. It’s important to note that Cambodia lacks some of the facilities taken for granted in Thailand. There are areas of Siem Reap, for example, without any postal deliveries. Thus it is common to have a post office box which can be rented very cheaply, although some overseas banks and institutions won’t accept it for communication purposes. It can also be difficult to find a Cambodian government official to issue a stamp or signature on an official document required in the home country. Power outages in Siem Reap are more common than in Pattaya. For the future, Pattaya and Siem Reap are both going through tremendous change. They are experiencing building booms as European influences wane whilst Chinese nationals increasingly dominate the tourist markets. Indeed, the Cambodian government has indicated that the Chinese currency, the yuan, will be accepted alongside the US dollar for currency transactions. The likelihood is that by 2027, in 10 years’ time, both Pattaya and Siem Reap will transform into very different urban centres from what they are today.
first MENA Tour victory at Pattana
A stunning birdie blitz coming home powered Fredrik From to a convincing three-shot victory in the MENA Tour’s rain-truncated Pattana Golf Championship on Friday. Starting the day a good four shots back, From blazed the course with a bogey-free nine-under 63, studded with seven birdies on the back nine, to seal his first win on the MENA Tour on 13-under 131 and a second for a Swede after Per Barth, who achieved the feat at the 2015 Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open. Venezuela’s Wolmer Murillo reeled off seven birdies against a lone bogey in his closing six-under 66 to finish solo second, one clear of England’s Jordan Garnish and American Roberto Galletti, who fired two eagles, including one on par-4, sixth, en route to his final round 67. Overnight leader Jose Ignacio Marin Casado of Spain slipped into a three-way tie for fifth on eight-under after carding a levelpar 72 alongside the Thai duo of Nakul Vichitryuthasastr and Wanich Petcharit. On a day when 45 minutes were lost due to the threat of lightning, everything went From’s way as he easily out-paced the field in a virtuoso effort that left everyone marvelling at his ball-striking prowess. “Feel really delighted to get the job done this time around after having lost out in a couple of playoffs on the MENA Tour,” said From after
receiving the winner’s trophy from Thomas Topken, managing director of Pattana Golf Club. “Everything worked well for me. I hit all the greens in regulation which was great. This course is my favourite now. There are so many scoring opportunities out there, especially on the back nine. I will be playing in MENA Tour’s events in South Africa and see if I can win the order of merit,” said the 27-year-old who graduated from the MENA Tour’s Qualifying School in 2016. Brazil’s Dubai-based Tiago Lobo kept up his dominance in the amateur division, taking the honours on twounder after a final round 73 as India’s Arkesh Bhatia, who is also based in Dubai, and Thailand’s Worathon Zeng shared second four shots adrift. Elsewhere, playing in his first competitive event in four weeks, European Tour regular Prom Meesawat knocked the rust off his game, finishing tied ninth on sixunder after returning a 68, one ahead of England’s Lee Corfield and three off Zane Scotland, a 10-time winner on the tour, as UAE’s Ahmed Al Musharrek settled for tied 60th on four over 148. The Pattana Golf Championship, which was reduced to 36-holes after heavy rain waterlogged the course, preventing play on the first two days marked the conclusion of the MENA Tour’s Thailand threeevent swing which saw Thailand’s
Jazz Janewattananond win the Mahasamutr Masters and Lionel Weber of France reign supreme at Mountain Creek Open by Golf Citizen. The MENA Tour will now travel to South Africa for three on the bounce co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Big Easy Tour, starting from June 6. An initiative of the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation, the MENA Golf Tour was created in 2011 with the aim of developing golf in the region. It is affiliated to R&A, the worldwide golf governing body based in the home of golf, St Andrews, and the Arab Golf Federation and enjoys the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) status. A guaranteed spot on the PGA Tour’s 2018 DEAN and DELUCA Invitational (for the MENA Tour champion), multiple European Tour starts, including the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the Hassan II Trophy, Maybank Championship Malaysia, and the KLM Open, are some of the added incentives that await MENA Tour members, in addition to playing privileges on the Sunshine Tour, and exemptions into the Final Stage of the Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour Q-Schools.

Chevrolet Fan Cup winners flying to the Theatre of Dreams Chevrolet Sales Thailand has partnered with Manchester United, organizing a special media event in Bangkok to announce the winners of the 2017 Chevrolet Fan Cup, the activity Chevrolet continues for the second consecutive year for fans who show their love and passion for the club through a social media contest. Manchester United Ambassador, Bryan Robson and club legend, Mikael Silvestre participated in the event to congratulate five Thai winners who are preparing for the dream journey to England. “We are very pleased to welcome two Manchester United legends to Bangkok. Thai football fans, especially Man United followers, love to see Red Devils heroes such as Br yan Robson and Mikael Silvestre in the country. The media event and the Chevrolet Fan Cup competition demonstrate Chevrolet’s commitment to bringing football fans closer to the beautiful game and fulfil their dreams,” said Wail A. Farghaly, managing director of GM and Chevrolet Thailand. During their stay in Thailand the legends used Chevrolet Trailblazer premium SUVs, experiencing the car’s active and passive safety features. The Trailblazer is one of the best handling SUVs in the Pickup-based Passenger Vehicle segment.
At the event, held at Polo Football Park, former captain Bryan Robson, who played for United from 1981-1993, and Mikael Silvestre, who won five English Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League with United, met media and winners of the 2017 Chevrolet Fan Cup competition. Also, media got a chance to show their unique skills in the ‘Reverse Footy’ challenge. Media had GoPro camera attached at the back, and watched live view through VR headset. All they had to do was listen to the legends’ coaching and scoring a goal. The challenge was designed to reflect the Trailblazer’s Rear Vision Camera and Front and Rear Parking Assist. The five winners from Thailand
will join Chevrolet Fan Cup winners from Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Korea and Middle East in a trip of a lifetime to Manchester, England, to compete in a tournament at Manchester United’s home ground Old Trafford. While in Manchester, the w inners w ill als o attend Manchester United’s English Premier League match against Crystal Palace, meet team legends and be attend the club’s famed Manchester United Soccer School at the first team training facilities at the Aon Training Complex. The highlight of their experience was dressing in the players’ locker room and walking through the tunnel and competing in the Chevrolet Fan Cup competition on the Old Trafford pitch. The 2017 Chevrolet Fan Cup was organized by Chevrolet in January for fans in nine markets to show their support for Manchester United through a social media contest. The five winners from Thailand, who submitted the most impressive photos or videos, were selected based on their creativity, passion and caption. All of them are lifelong Manchester United fans and agree that visiting Old Trafford is the supreme dream for all Red Devils.
CARRY ON TUNNELLING The Sukhumvit underpass has been a quite a story. Whether it will alleviate the traffic woes in the centre of the city or merely delay them for a couple of kilometers down the road remains to be seen, especially in the high season. What nobody seems to have told us is why an underpass was anyway preferable to a presumably cheaper and elevated overpass. TOLL PLAZA DELAY The ring of toll booths on the Pattaya to Chonburi motorway look impressive in their brown and blue colours. But no cash has yet been taken for a variety of bureaucratic reasons. Once the booths are truly operational, drivers will need to stop four times on a single journey from Pattaya to Suvarnabhumi. Estimated cost for a car is 180-200 baht. DRONES OVERHEAD The latest suggestion to make Pattaya safer for tourists is the introduction of drones which will keep an eye on disorder below and enable the authorities to react more quickly to bag snatching and muggings. It’s strange that so much attention has been paid to Walking Street in this context as it is generally a “bubble” area with most clubs hiring their own security staff. AIR VISIT LIMITS In case you didn’t know, tourists crossing into Thailand by land are now limited to two arrivals (30 days each time) per calendar year unless they hold a visa given by a Thai embassy or re-entry permit issued by Thai Immigration. There is no such restriction if arriving by air, although a visitor having six such entries in a year may well be questioned by the airport immigration why he or she comes so frequently. YOUR PLAICE OR MINE Fish and chip shops in Pattaya have had a checkered history, mostly closing after a year or two. A major exception to the rule is Simon’s, situated in a popular restaurant area near the Hanuman statue and near Jomtien beach. Devout followers from the UK say the taste is as good as you’d find anywhere in the world. There’s a Thai menu too for those who want local dishes. CAMBODIAN STAYS A recent survey found that the average tourist stays for five nights in Phnom Penh but only three nights in Siem Reap. Why the difference? Some say that Siem Reap’s tourist attractions are largely limited to the Angkor temple complex whereas Phnom Penh has much more. Cynics say that the real reason is that the capital city has a booming night life whereas Siem Reap doesn’t have much outside of the famous Pub Street. MALAYSIAN RETIREMENT Malaysian tourist authorities say their retirement visa programme is doing really well. A 10 year visa is available and both part-time working and ownership of property are permitted in return for a 37,000 US dollar deposit in a Malaysian bank. The problem with the Thai retirement visa is that it confers no such benefits. COACH CONFUSION Third Road and Thappraya Road now boast official notices from City Hall stating that roadside parking is allowed for tourists coaches and vans. They tend to gather in large numbers in the early evening but then disappear around 9 p.m. Nobody has managed to work out where they have all gone. BUS STOPS While on the subject of transport, Pattaya must be the biggest city in the world where there are so many public bus stops, advertized and highlighted as such, but without any buses ever in sight. Many of the so-called bus stops have in fact been taken over by local taxi drivers who regard them as a parking spot. But that’s not why they were introduced. THAILAND ELITE The controversial elite card, first announced 11 years ago, has now become diversified to cater for a more varied market. Basically you pay between 500,000 and 2 million baht for a long-stay visa and some other perks. However, ownership of property (except a condo) is not allowed. Full details in our next issue.

Thailand tourism generates 840 billion baht in first four months Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has released figures showing that during the first four months of this year, 12 million visitors came to Thailand spending around 620 billion baht, an increase of 4.71 per cent when compared with the same period in 2016. Domestic tourism is thriving too, with over 220 billion baht being generated. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT governor said, “Thailand attracts many tourists because it offers experiences that are new and unique, no matter how many times you visit. In the first few months of the year, the combination of lovely weather and amazing festivals; such as, Songkran or the Thai New Year celebrations means there’s much to enjoy for travellers, not to mention locals. We are delighted to be doing so well in 2017 and will continue to offer a warm Thai welcome to visitors yet to come.”
These figures also show that the strategy of attracting higher spending, quality tourists put in place by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is now paying off as people recognise that Thailand offers luxury experiences, dining and leisure opportunities which rate among the world’s best, he added. Of the 12 million visitors to Thailand from January to April, 7.5 million came from East Asia, generating 308 billion baht. China remained the leading source market at about 3.2 million arrivals, though Thai authorities have invoked measures to stop unscrupulous tour operators taking advantage of visitors. In addition, larger numbers of European visitors arrived in Thailand from January to April, totalling 2.7 million arrivals, up 8.41 per cent when compared with the same period in

Rock the Lunch #51 by Hard Rock Pattaya
Hard Rock Pattaya organized “Rock the Lunch #51” corporate social responsibility activity at AntiHuman Trafficking and Child Abuse Center, Pattaya (Baan KruJa). The management team together with staff prepared and cooked up a fun menu, serving the children’s favorite food. It’s a plate of happiness, served with love at Baan KruJa. Hard Rock Pattaya’s Rock the Lunch, an initiative started in 2011, is one such endeavor to connect the staff with school children, and to also rekindle the childlike wonder in themselves. The staff volunteer
to visit schools which have a limited budget for meals. And since it’s a project by Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya and Hard Rock Café Pattaya, a good meal always comes with good entertainment. At the end of the meal, the staff put on a fun and energetic concert, in conjunction with Hard Rock Heals Foundation. The kids had an amazing time, which they will remember for a long time to come. And as for the grown-ups, let’s just say no one ever forgets what it feels like to be a happy child. It is about Love All, Serve All at Rock the Lunch.
GM works to set sustainable natural rubber tires into motion
Transforming the global rubber and tire supply chain to create lasting, environmentally sound sustainable rubber production requires a collaborative approach. Through an industry-first commitment to sourcing sustainable natural rubber in its tires, General Motors is helping drive the industry toward net-zero deforestation and uphold human and labor rights. “Our supplier partners are an extension of our company,” said Steve Kiefer, GM senior vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “We want to encourage affordable, safer and cleaner options for our customers that drive value to both our organization and the communities in which we work.” GM believes that sourcing tires produced using sustainable natural rubber has a number of community, business and environmental benefits, including: • Preserving and restoring primary forests and high conservation value and high carbon stock areas that are critical to addressing climate change and protecting wildlife
• Improving yield and quality for natural rubber farmers, further supporting the small businesses that contribute 85 percent of this material • Mitigating business risk related to supply chain sourcing and performance and helping assure long-term availability of a key commodity As tire manufacturers develop sustainable natural rubber policies, automaker demand will help fuel results. GM will be working with tire suppliers, governments, rubber industry associations and environmental NGOs to drive alignment and reduce supply chain complexity. GM is also working with suppliers such as Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear and Michelin to develop appropriate transparency into natural rubber and ensure its traceability throughout the supply chain. The company encourages other automakers and suppliers to join in the effort to accelerate progress. GM is committed to developing safer, simpler and better solutions that move humanity forward. Mick & Di The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
PULLMAN PATTAYA HOTEL G Chivas Whisky Affair – Sunshine in the Glass Head down to the Pullman Pattaya Hotel G on Wongamart Beach (Naklua) and most nights of the week there’s a special foodie happening at this cool, contemporary destination. Mick and I were invited recently to a “Whisky Affair” event in their Beach Club Restaurant. On arrival the striking décor of the lobby is impressive, chic and trendy with cascading water features and interesting modern sculptures. We were directed down to the beachfront where the fusion inside/outside stylish Beach Club Restaurant serves as their all-day dining venue with stunning views out over the sand. The host for this Whisky Affair was the finest whisky house in the world, Chivas. From extremely humble beginnings way back in 1820 the two Chivas brothers steered their whisky partnership to the pinnacle of success resulting in a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1843. Chivas Regal Brand Ambassador Thailand, Paul Nealon, was on hand to navigate the assembled diners through the various premium whiskies with interesting facts and amusing anecdotes. Chef Gabriela Espinosa from Scarlett Wine Bar and Restaurant at Pullman Bangkok Hotel G was seconded for one night only to create a gourmet 4-course dinner to complement the elegance of the quartet of Chivas vintages. Such gastro-decadence was to come and it was with high expectations that we sipped our Chivas cocktails prior to being seated. The first starter highlighted Hokkaido scallops prepared ceviche style with orange dressing. This dinner from start to finish was a true eye-opener. Who knew Chivas whisky could pair so well with food? The first dram of the evening was Chivas Regal 12-year-old. With its beautifully balanced blend of aromatic spices and hints of soft butter toffee, it made the ideal escort to the delights of the scallop and gently spiced orange dressing. Next up was probably my favourite course and whisky of the evening. Chef had created a cold white asparagus soup with the deluxe hit of salmon caviar. First that extraordinary soup with its soft, velvety texture and, although served cold, its profundity of flavour yielded a surprising warmth which married oh, so well with the newly released (2014) Chivas Regal Extra featuring a hearty helping of oloroso sherry cask-matured malt whisky which has been described as balanced with herbal honey, spicy ginger and even a touch of cigar box. The main course offered a sous vide Burgundy chicken roulade with shishito peppers and shitake mushrooms. The chosen escorting

whisky was the celebrated Chivas 18-year-old Regal. This Masterblended exceptional whisky with its long well-balanced finish and oakemanated spice kept many a nose inside their glasses enjoying the aromas of vanilla fudge, orange peel, and malted barley. A superb blend. Dessert arrived in the form of a 60 percent chocolate parfait attended by the gold standard of whiskies, a 25-year-old Chivas Regal. Awarded 95 points in the 2010 Whisky Bible, this has been described as unadulterated class. Rich and nutty and almost thick with notes of malt and berries with a hint of liquorice, it was faultless. Of course, we were all tasting experts this late in the “Whisky Affair” and the murmurs of appreciation hummed around the restaurant. Accompanied by Chef Gabriela’s joyous rich French chocolate dessert, it was an undreamed of combination. Out thanks and admiration to all who pulled off this stunning, innovative event especially Chef

Gabriela and Paul Nealon, the Chivas Brand Ambassador. We will never taste a slurp of Chivas in the same way again. Applause to all involved. As we stumbled to our room after such an evening of gleeful eating and drinking, we decided that the morning would be soon enough to explore the hotel. Our room beckoned and what a stylish, upscale space it was with the most striking views out over the bay and big, comfy, squashy beds. Goodnight… The next morning we awoke amongst tropical gardens with absolute beach frontage overlooking the pristine Wongamat Beach. There are 353 upscale rooms at this resort with eight specific types of room, so something to please everyone, from Scandinavian suites, to family rooms with bunk beds, Club rooms with VIP lounges, two pools, business conference facilities and the famous Aisawan Spa which is the biggest and most renowned in Thailand. But for us it was back down to the Beach Club to enjoy our buffet breakfast overlooking the palm-fringed sands and aquamarine bay. Sorry we’re running out of space for this article, so why not come here yourselves and see what Pullman Pattaya Hotel G can offer you. There’s a new toque in town and he’s cooking up a storm at the Royal Grill Room & Wine Cellar Yes, there’s a new chef in town and he’s pretty much circumnavigated the globe to get to us. Hailing from the fascinating city of Berlin, he’s travelled the world honing his skills in 5-star kitchens including the Grand Hyatt in Dubai, Movenpick in Ghana and the ultra-luxurious Siam Kempinski in Bahrain, amongst many others. He’s young, dynamic enthusiastic, and passionate to introduce his cuisine to the award-winning flagship restaurant at the Royal Cliff Hotels. Fine dining doesn’t get any more refined than at the Royal Grill Room, plus it houses one of the world’s leading wine lists and consistently wins the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. From the moment you enter and are shown to your table, you just intuitively know how wonderful the evening is going to be. From its stylish interior bedecked in the richness of teakwood and the soaring arched windows, the well turned out waiters, the cool wine cellar, the soft, melodious sounds of the piano player, it just oozes with luxury, extravagance and pleasure. So let’s get started on the food! Our tasting menu was modishly launched with an amuse-bouche of green pea ice cream and a shot glass of hot pea cappuccino soup. Intriguing flavours hit our palates with the iciness of the bright green ice cream making incredibly good friends with the comfort of the soup with its on-trend foam topping. Our appetizer was next, a duet of salmon and tuna. The salmon had been marinated in beetroot for 24 hours not only to tenderise but also to impart its rich earthy flavours. The tuna tataki consisted of squares of sashimi graded encrusted tuna just shown the pan for seconds to relieve the rawness in a delightful way and crowned with a tempura king prawn served in a puddle of horseradish crème. Accompanying all this was a culinary plastic transparent pipette filled with a

dressing to be squeezed over the fish. We loved it all. A soup course then hit the table. The Royal Grill Room is famous for its soup with Chef Walter’s legendary tomato soup with gin always a winner. This time it was Chef Romano’s signature lobster bisque flambéed with Hennessy Cognac. It was a swim in the sea, the richness of the crustaceans bathed in its smooth velvety texture were
amazing and served with a crispy crabmeat cigar for dunking; it was a triumph. For the main course we were served a deconstructed tournedos Rossini. Prime beef had been prepared in its sous vide water bath to medium rare condition and creatively presented on the plate with shavings of black truffle, baby vegetables, sensational deluxe foie gras potato praline balls, a small
stack of pistachio dust and escorted by a thrilling masala infused jus. White and green asparagus tips attended the beef as well as white and orange heritage carrots. Wow, what a dish. Layers of textures and flavours bounced off each other and returned for a knockout taste reaction. Could we manage dessert? We couldn’t leave without it – so we requested one serving with two spoons. The sweet vision appeared from across the room and we were so pleased we were ready with our spoons to tuck into a Dacquoise coconut feuilletee (a light airy cake made from almond meringue) together with a strawberry and vanilla ice cream. Shards of chocolate were hidden in the cake and white chocolate ears decorated the confection – it was patisserie perfection. Throughout our dinner we were drinking the eminently acceptable house “Gold Selection” from Australia. We commenced with the elegant Chardonnay and enjoyed a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon with the beef.
Soontorn tickled the ivories, the staff were exemplary and as you can tell from this rave review we had a truly wonderful experience. Thank you to Chef Romano and your brigade for such a gourmet dinner – long may you hang your toque in this kitchen. To dine at the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar is a stellar experience. From the minute you step through the door you are cocooned in luxury and spoilt with thoughtful (almost telepathic) service, the food is exquisite and, considering the eminence of this restaurant, not extraordinarily pricey. Their 3-course set menu is B.999 ++ and with wine B.1,559++. Of course there is a full a la carte menu. Do check their website for details of the monthly-changing set menu. The Phase One IQ3 Achromatic Camera takes the same concept and brings it into the world of medium format photography. Lacking the Bayer filter found in color cameras, each and every pixel of its 100-megapixel sensor is dedicated to capturing detail, luminance, and tone. Influenced partly by Art Deco, the TV sits inside one of three metal frames — there's one for a table, a wall, and a free stand — that are hand-forged, ground and polished. When switched on, the 7mm-thin, OLED HDR 4K display automatically slides upwards to reveal a 120W integrated soundbar. Should you want more audio performance, the TV also connects wirelessly with the company's Klang 9 speakers and has an integrated 5.1-channel decoder to eliminate the need for a separate box. There's also a built-in 1TB digital recorder, built-in apps for most popular services, and fabric cover to conceal all the cords and connections on the back. Modern Art, Single-Malt Scotch and Premium Cigars at DUKE, Gaysorn Village – La Gallerie D'Art et Du Cigare by John K. Lindgren
These days the talk-of-the-town in Bangkok is the DUKE Contemporary Art Space and Whisky Bar/Cigar Lounge at Gaysorn Village (formerly known as Gaysorn Plaza) located at the Erawan intersection, opposite Central World. The exhibition room, which sits on the first floor of the newly rebranded swank Gaysorn Village, is a brand new concept art gallery displaying works of recognized Thai artists such as Kriangkrai Kongkhanun, Parichart Suphaphan, Verapong Sritrakulkitjakarn and Sakarin KrueOn. Large paintings hang on the raw concrete walls and amazing sculptures occupy polished floor space. Apart from all the contemporary artworks there is a stylish dark wood paneled bar with brown comfortable leather sofas and an extensive Scotch single-malt and French cognac selection. And of course, a cigar lounge equipped a humidor loaded with bespoke Dominican Davidoff of Geneva hand-rolled stogies. The most recent event at DUKE was the vernissage “Plus Four” by Praphassorn Butphrom, Soomphong Ponradsamee, Manut Lao-on and Atchalinee Kesornsook, which pulled in a large crowd of art lovers to view works of four painters, representing a new generation of Thai artists using acrylic on canvas, oil on canvas, and oil on wood panel with outstanding results. More art
exhibitions are scheduled in the near future. My recommendation: Check out DUKE Contemporary Art Space next time you’re in the Chit Lom / Ratchaprasong area. “To be an artist is to believe in life.” ~ Henry Moore

Thermage for younger-looking eyes The skin around our eyes is the most sensitive part of our face and the most noticeable as we age. Reduced collagen tends to make the skin lose its elasticity; it begins to sag, and wrinkles form— making us look older. Overexposure to sunlight also contributes to the rapid aging of our skin, which is known as photoaging. by Dr Natnicha Loichuen During the summer season, many of us were exposed to extreme heat and sunlight, which can damage collagen fibers—a protein fiber found in abundance throughout our bodies. It provides strength and cushioning to many different body parts, including skin. Overexposure to sunlight also can damage elastin, the protein that helps skin tissue resume its original position or shape after stretching. If you want to rejuvenate the skin around your eyes without undergoing invasive treatment, then Thermage is the ideal treatment for you. Thermage for eyes is a FDA-approved procedure for tightening and lifting skin; it reduces wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet). The treatment is safe and non-surgical, using radio frequency energy to create a uniform heating effect deep into the dermis. The heat tightens and rejuvenates existing collagen. At the same time, it stimulates the
production of new collagen to tighten and lift the skin around the eyes, giving you a more youthful appearance. Thermage produces immediate results after the procedure, but the ultimate improvement may take up to six months and usually lasts 12 to 24 months. A Thermage for eyes treatment takes about 45 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the affected area. You can apply make-up and return to your routine activities right after treatment.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi and No-Gi Training by Rory Coughlan
Gi and no-gi are the two forms of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Gi (kimono) jiu-jitsu is grappling with the use of a traditional gi that allows you to grab the clothing of your opponent. No-gi is grappling without the traditional uniform, instead you wear shorts/spats and a rash guard. In no-gi you cannot grab your opponent’s clothing. To be a complete BJJ player you should train in both. Usually if you start training in majority without the gi then you will have a much harder time adapting to the gi. The gi in some ways is more complex with all the grips but no-gi has many other aspects which are not found in the gi, eg more brabo chokes, guillotines, footlocks than in the gi. The gi has huge amounts of grips on both the jacket and pants. The most common jacket grip is the collar/sleeve grip. The grips allow you to have great control of the fight and to submit your opponent using their or your own gi. It allows a much smaller opponent to control a bigger one. In no-gi you have more wrestling based grips such as neck and grabbing all joints in the body. It is harder to control an opponent and they can slip or power out of controls. No-gi BJJ is faster paced. Gi slows things down due to the natural friction of the garment. While gi and no-gi are very similar, the way both styles evolve are very different. In gi, the numerous grips and gi material mean that a lot of set-ups are based on using the gi material, eg lapel or worm guard (which is impossible in no-gi). In no-gi, you look more at taking your opponent’s back because mounting in no-gi has limited submisions, and the back position has the rear naked choke and other options. You will find no-gi players using more guillotines and brabo/darce chokes as well as using more footlocks. It is hard to say what is more technical as both styles are different and you also have much smaller no-gi players that submit bigger ones (taking the back is a great way of doing that). Is your sweet tooth aging you? It’s hard to stop the appearance of facial aging produced by fine lines, wrinkles, and dull tint. But it’s easy to promote such unwanted skin problems—just load up on ice cream, candy, pastries and almost any white food. Why? Because while the sugar in your blood tends to bind with the proteins that keep your skin firm and smooth, sugar from processed foods and simple carbs like white rice, white bread, corn flakes, pasta, most desserts, and even raisins, kick your blood sugar up quickly. In turn, that triggers your body to make more insulin, a hormone that pumps up the production of oil, which can clog your pores and lead to pimples. Foods with a lot of essential fatty acids, like omega-3s, are the building blocks of cell membranes. They also help make the skin's natural oil barrier that keeps skin supple. They're found in crab and in fish like tuna and salmon. You can get them in plant oils, nuts, and soy, too. But if your diet doesn't include animal protein, you'll have lower levels of them. Meanwhile, don’t fear the natural sugars in fruits and vegetables; they aren't harmful—and they provide your skin with helpful antioxidants.

Wellness and Well-being Spa Package at eforea spa, Hilton Pattaya
Exercise—It’s About Time A new study indicates that working out before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first. When we eat it affects how much fat we burn during exercise, researchers report, and also alters molecular activity within fat cells in ways that could have longterm implications for our physical well-being. Athletes and scientists have long known that meal timing affects performance. If you eat first, you have relatively high levels of blood sugar. Working muscles
can readily use this sugar as fuel. On the other hand, if you have fasted before working out, your muscles must rely primarily on the body’s skimpy supply of stored carbohydrates or its larger reservoirs of fat. Accessing this fat requires extra metabolic steps to become available as energy, which makes it a relatively inefficient fuel source during times of strenuous exercise. As a general rule, the body tends to turn to fat as its primary fuel source when exercise is more moderate.

Witness – Katy Perry Witness is the fifth studio album by American singer Katy Perry. It is scheduled for release on June 9, 2017. The album's lead single, "Chained to the Rhythm", was released on February 10, 2017. A second song titled "Bon Appétit" followed on April 28, 2017. A third song, "Swish Swish", was released May 19, 2017. Following the release of her fourth album Prism in 2013 and the end of The Prismatic World Tour in October 2015, Perry told The New York Times in February 2016 that she was in the "research and development phase" of a new album. She decided to take a hiatus after the tour concluded to "give my mental health a break" before starting to write new songs the following June. Perry felt "refreshed" after the hiatus, and had over 40 tracks "in progress" before the year ended. In August, the singer stated that she aspired to make material "that connects and relates and inspires" and told Ryan Seacrest that she was "not rushing" her fifth album, adding "I'm just having a lot of fun, but experimenting and trying different producers, and different collaborators, and different styles". In February 2017, Perry stated that the album was "definitely a new era for me" and "an era of purposeful pop" she was proud of. Later that month, she told Capital FM that "I've got something swirling, but I think I want to put out some songs first before I give them the full meal". The following May, Perry revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the album will include 15 of the 40 songs she wrote for it, and described the record as "fun and dance-y and dark and light".

Kushuthara, the first Bhutanese film to star a Western actor, receives international release
Filmed in the beautiful location of Bhutan, the film Kushuthara: Pattern of Love has recently had a worldwide release and is available in Thailand. Kushuthara, a feature film, with an internationally acclaimed cast, is certain to dazzle audiences worldwide. The film enjoyed its US premiere at New York City’s prestigious Rubin Theater; followed by its theatrical release (and Video On Demand release). Kushuthara is the first Bhutanese film to star a Western actor (Emrhys Cooper). The film’s stunning cinematography transports the viewer to a faraway place, the tiny land-locked country of Bhutan, which lies quietly nestled between India and China. Kushuthara is shot amidst the stunning landscape of the Himalayas (usually inaccessible to foreigners) and stars Emrhys Cooper (Vanity/Person of Interest) as a Western journalist who becomes entangled in a complicated and passionate love affair with a married Bhutanese woman, played by actress Kezang Wangmo. Wangmo is an accomplished Bhutanese star, and has even received the honor of becoming a Bhutanese Member of Parliament. The all-star cast is rounded out by Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuck, whose lengthy credits include a starring role alongside Brad Pitt in Seven Years in Tibet. The film receives its direction by acclaimed Karma Deki, who is longcelebrated and awarded for her work at festivals worldwide. Historically, the Bhutanese film industry has looked East for inspiration, modeling itself after the films of Bollywood. This time it’s not Bollywood, but Hollywood that inspires. Kushuthara embraces a more Western style, making it a groundbreaking venture for Bhutanese film-making. It is the compelling storyline that draws on Buddhist spirituality, which drives the film’s narrative and further cements its theme. The film’s title, translates literally to “love token woven in cloth” and the dream-like imagery and compelling storyline further imbeds this weaving—showing beautifully how the most unlikely of lives can become intertwined by the thread of love. Kushuthara has already been wildly well-received garnering numerous international awards, even prior to its North American release. Notable accolades include: ‘Best Foreign Narrative Film’ at the Laughlin International Film Festival, an ‘Honorable Mention’ for Cooper at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, and the ‘Lyrics, Composer and Sound Design’ award from the National Bhutan Film Festival. Kushuthara is enjoying further success by earning nods as an official selection of numerous prestigious film festivals worldwide. This touching tale of forbidden loves that spans across countries and lifetime is one certain to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide.

benchmark for others to follow. There are of course many bars and pubs in Pattaya and many of them advertise good food and some even a carvery on a Sunday, but when you think quality, choice and service, in a traditional English pub atmosphere, you can only think of The Sportsman’s Sunday Carvery where few can compare. Two soups, seven roast meats and all the trimmings available every Sunday from 12:30 to 8:30 pm, all you can eat at only 425 baht per person, the carvery really does set The Sportsman ahead of the pack. The Sportsman, as its name might suggest, also shows all the sports under the sun, showing live football, golf, Formula One, AFL, NFL, boxing and even UFC to name a few.
The Sportsman has even had the pleasure of welcoming a few famous faces throughout its 20-year history including former snooker world champions Ken Doherty and Jimmy White (pictured) who often pay a visit when in Pattaya.

A Thai Representative in Washington, D.C.
Yes! The very first member of the United States Congress born in Thailand! I was in Washington, D.C., from May 15 to 22nd by special invitation to the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo as a delegate member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the world’s largest professional trade organization, with almost 1.3 million members throughout the United States and worldwide. The NAR was holding its annual Mid-Year Legislative Conference attended by almost ten thousand American and international partners, and I was recently appointed as a member of the NAR Board of Directors. On the final day of the week-long event, all directors met to vote at the annual board meeting. The NAR has been supporting the business of real estate by strengthening the economic and legal conditions necessary to protect and promote property ownership throughout the United States and it is now reaching out to support the growing interest in property ownership throughout the world as property markets are rapidly expanding with globalization. At this year’s Legislative Conference, members once again played an active role to advance the real estate industry, public policy and the association itself. Realtors from all over the world came to Washington, DC, for special issue forums, committee meetings, legislative activities and the NAR real estate industry trade show.
by Clayton Wade Managing Director
Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com
During the week we attended many interesting agency visits in the Capital. Thailand’s Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (RESAM), as special NAR bilateral partners, had been invited to join on these agency visits. The incredible learning allowed each of us to engage in direct discussions with U.S. government officials. It was during our previous visit to the U.S. House of Representatives Department of Veterans Affairs that we all got to meet and sit down with Ladda ‘Tammy’ Duckworth--an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Illinois’s 8th congressional district since 2013. A Democrat, she is the first Asian American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and the first member of Congress born in Thailand! Duckworth previously served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2011, and as the Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs from 2006 to 2009. An Iraq War veteran, Thai-born Tammy Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and suffered severe combat wounds, losing both of her legs and damaging her right arm. She was the first female double amputee of the war in Iraq. Having received a medical waiver, she continued to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard along with her husband, Major Bryan W. Bowlsbey, a signal officer and fellow Iraq War veteran. Duckworth retired from the army in October 2014, and was reelected to Congress in November of that same year. In the November 8, 2016, election, Duckworth defeated incumbent Republican Senator Mark Kirk for the seat in the United States Senate. Speaking of the US political scene, many may be surprised to learn that the National Association of Realtors has its own, well-organized and well-staffed political party known simply as the REALTORS® Party. At the Party Convention & Trade Expo, Realtors and association leaders come together to speak in unison on issues that pertain to real estate. And it’s an opportunity for all members to respond to and initiate change at all levels of government –- federal, state and local. One of the primary reasons I was invited to this event and made an NAR Board of Directors member was to share all of these lobbying procedures and protocols so that we international members can return to our home countries and exercise these same procedures in presenting changes in real estate laws and regulations necessary to advance our own real estate industries and move us forward towards better and more secure real estate transactions and better and more secure home ownership for our clients. Speaking of which, our RESAM organization represented by President Somsak Chutisilp, myself, Vice-President Clayton Wade, Presidents Liaison Paul Xumsai and the NAR’s regional coordinator for Asia/Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Lebanon Nancy Suvarnamani went before the Raume Foundation board of directors at this year’s NAR legislative event appealing for a $25,000 grant towards drafting a proposal to present to the Thai government to establish licensing of real

estate brokers and to provide free seminars on a code of ethics for the industry. A particular goal of my own is to see what can be done to establish clear, concrete and fair policies for the thousands of foreign buyers of homes and land in Thailand. For too many years foreigners have been subjected to periodic ‘political terrorism,’ usually perpetrated against Thai nominee companies. It is time to openly face the issue of nominee companies and give it legitimate and respectable standing, thereby eliminating the continued threat of the government confiscating property from foreigners when one or another zealous Thai political figure grabs some cheap publicity attacking foreign home owners. We all know very well that land and house purchases by foreigners through nominee companies are facilitated at the various government land offices by government-licensed Thai lawyers and government-licensed accountants. It is a huge cottage industry run and operated by Thai professionals; there is absolutely no good reason that foreign buyers should be subjected to the fear produced by these frivolous attacks that have never in my 26 years of living in Thailand gone anywhere past some chest pounding and an article or two. It is time to start lobbying the Thai government and seek their understanding and support with clear and proper regulations so that foreigners can live peacefully in their Thai homes without the uncertainty imposed by existing Thai laws. I think that the time has come to enable all foreign house owners to live with the confidence that their ‘Home is their Castle’ even here in Thailand!

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has recruited a team of switchedon Generation Y employees and entrepreneurs to closely collaborate with the hospitality firm’s executive team as it looks to glean fresh ideas on how to attract Millennial guests and talent. In a move that signals the Swiss hotel group’s progressive Human Resources strategy and commitment to meeting ever-changing guest demands, the company has handpicked an ExCom–Y Committee – a team of 10 talented Millennials, six of whom are from across the company and the remaining four are young business leaders brought in from locations across the globe to provide a truly balanced and international perspective. They include Jessica Houlgrave, who spent six years working for leading global financial institutions and is now researching the impact of technology on the art ecosystem as part of an Art Business Master’s degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. She is also a competitive sailor and a passionate global traveller. “I am honoured to have been selected to take part in this groundbreaking initiative, which I believe sets Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts apart as a forward-thinking hospitality company that puts guest and talent needs first,” said Houlgrave. “In the context of the ExCom–Y Committee it means analysing the Millennial mindset and lifestyle to help future-proof company strategy and I’m excited to be able to contribute my thoughts as part of this collaborative effort.” Houlgrave is joined on the committee by a group of highflying entrepreneurs and business executives from countries including Germany, France and the US, who are proficient in several disciplines such as technology, hospitality and pharmaceuticals. They will work alongside a talented group of Mövenpick Millennials who have been selected from hotels in Dubai, Pattaya, Karachi and Switzerland. They too represent several nationalities and areas of expertise including front office, digital content and strategy, sales, marketing, F&B and brand and quality assurance. The ExCom–Y Committee members all have one thing in common – they are all from Generation Y, broadly defined as those born in the 1980s and 1990s. “As we embark on an unprecedented growth phase, expanding our portfolio at a rapid
rate, it’s paramount we seek input and insights from our colleagues, particularly our young talent, who possess an intimate understanding of Generation Y trends,” said Craig Cochrane, the company’s senior VP Human Resources. “As Millennials become a more influential demographic and contribute significantly to our overall guest profile, it is imperative we incorporate their needs and wishes into our hospitality offering.” He added: “To be successful, we must listen to our team members and to our guests, and the ExCom–Y Committee is integral to our Human Resources and development strategies as we seek progressive methods to evolve our brand and meet future guest and talent demands.” Millennials currently represent around one-third of the global population. This influential demographic is on-the-go and always connected, using mobile devices and digital platforms throughout their journeys and demanding immersive travel experiences that introduce them to new cultures and activities. They blend business trips into personal vacations more than other travellers and rely on online sources for information about their hotels or destinations. Mövenpick has already had some success attracting Millennials who account for more than 30 percent of its guest total. “We must not only recognise their needs as the customers of the future, but also as potential talent that we can engage and employ,” said Olivier Chavy, CEO, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts. “At Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts we pride ourselves on recruiting a multi-cultural and multi-generational workforce and it has become very apparent that to truly reflect today’s global demographics, Millennials must be well-represented across our operations, from head office to individual hotels.” Cochrane added: “The creation of the ExCom–Y Committee marks a significant step in this ongoing strategy and we are eager to work with them on a wide range of topics that are essential to our company’s evolution.” The ExCom–Y Committee will be called on around five times a year to attend and contribute to executive meetings in various geographical locations. “We look forward to gaining a new perspective, fresh ideas and a greater understanding of important Gen Y considerations,” concluded Cochrane.

It was a great learning experience to be part of such an excellent hotel and improve his knowledge of Thai food under the guidance of Chef Virat Kanja.
With all this improved wisdom he was off overseas again and moved as sssistant Thai chef to Melt restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore. After another short visit to Macau he finally returned to Thailand to settle down. He joined his first American style managed hotel, the JW Marriot Phuket and worked there for one year at the Cucina Italian restaurant to later join the Crown Plaza as Chef de Cuisine of the Patio restaurant. He enjoyed taking care of the Patio Restaurant, working with his team and teaching them new dishes and techniques. In the meanwhile he also gained official Chef Certifications in order to qualify to work and cook in Europe. After a while with Patio restaurant and an excellent 16 years culinary journey he received an

Chef Thong says: “It is my pleasure and pride to join the Centara family as I received the opportunity to show my skills, develop myself and moreover I have a chance to develop others” George Kenton, general manager says: “We are delighted and excited to have you on our team Chef Ake, and look forward seeing you continue your fascinating journey with us in Krabi”
The Nai Harn Phuket hosts global wine critic James Suckling Following the successful inauguration of the 'Best Rosé for Thailand' contest in 2016, leading luxury resort The Nai Harn Phuket once again partnered with international wine expert James Suckling this year to sniff out the ‘pinnacle of the pinks’. In the second edition of Thailand’s only wine competition to focus on premier rosés, Suckling conducted a series of blind tastings on May 11 and 12 scoring each wine from an extensive entry list of varied labels put forward by a strong line-up of leading wine suppliers to Thailand. After the intensive tasting sessions, and with help from his son and protégé Jack Suckling, James selected 10 wines as the recipients
of this year’s awards. The winning wines were announced during a glamorous awards party at The Nai Harn’s al fresco Reflections lounge, where guests were invited to sample all the rosés in the competition, accompanied by gourmet bites served from live cooking stations with the event framed by the stunning backdrop of Phuket’s picture perfect Nai Harn bay. A total of 80 rosé wines were entered in this year’s contest, including labels from France, Italy, Chile, Spain, and Australia, as well as some top homegrown Thai vintages. The submitted pinks were separated into two categories based on wholesale price – those below 800 baht (USD 23), and those above. Using these price categories,
James Suckling selected the Top 10 Rosés of Thailand, judging the wines or their quality and value for money. He also selected his Best Affordable Rosé and the Best Rosé in Show. The overall Best Rosé award went to Château d'Esclans Côtes de Provence Garrus Rosé 2014, imported to Thailand through BB&B, which James gave an impressive 96 points. In the Best Value Rosé category, the winner was Château Routas Coteaux Varois en Provence Rosé 2016, imported by Italasia Trading, which was given 93 points and also claimed the number one spot in the Top 10 Rosés for Thailand list based on a combination of quality and price. During the presentation ceremony, Suckling noted that Thailand’s rosés made a strong impression, led by the GranMonte Syrah Asoke Valley Sakuna Rosé 2016 which came 8th overall. “Although the rosés from Provence are still the best in the world, it’s impressive indeed to find a Thai produced wine in the Top 10 once again this year, an achievement that’s thoroughly deserved,” Suckling said. “We are delighted to return to The Nai Harn to judge the excellent wines entered for this unique contest. Rosés are best enjoyed in warm climates with light, flavourful
cuisine and Phuket offers both of these essential ingredients in abundance,” he added. Following the competition, the Top 10 rosé wines are featured as part of the exclusive “Cellar by JamesSuckling.com” at The Nai Harn, a curated selection of wines available exclusively at Reflections, Cosmo and Rock Salt restaurant. The Nai Harn was also the first resort on Phuket to offer Frosé (frozen rosé), an iced wine cocktail inspired by summer vacation trends to the south of Europe. The resort’s unique Frosé is made with Italian rosé wine (‘Terre Di Talamo Toscana Piano Rosato 2015,’ rated
91/100 by James Suckling), and also features fresh strawberries, vodka and grenadine. “Rosé wines are a perfect complement to Phuket’s tropical climate and we are honoured to have the opportunity to partner with one of the world’s foremost wine experts to highlight the best in the market,” said Frank Grassmann, general manager of The Nai Harn. “An enduring connection with James Suckling underlines our commitment to offer the very best international cuisine and drinks to our guests – not only the best of Phuket, but also the best of Thailand,” he added.

Now in its 14th year, the GMI Grandmasters was created to reward GM’s best of the best dealers in the region for their excellence. Winners were selected based on vehicle and parts sales, service, customer satisfaction and facility standards. They were judged on both the quantity and the quality of their operations. This year’s participants included the highest-performing dealers from Australia and New Zealand, the Middle East, Korea, Israel, Japan and Southeast Asia. They engaged in a series of business meetings and team-building activities. GM Executive Vice President and President of GM International Stefan Jacoby said, “Over the past year, our dealers have done an outstanding job putting the customer at the center and strengthening their commitment to the I Care Culture. They have been a critical part of our team.”
This year’s Grandmasters program began on May 7 with a welcome reception at Cadillac House, the new home of GM’s American luxury brand. The dealers were able to view Cadillac’s award-winning lineup, including the CT6, XT5, CTS and ATS. The following day they got down to business, as the Grandmasters received a company update from Jacoby. GMI Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Mike Devereux talked about the exciting new technology coming to dealers’ showrooms, while highlighting the ongoing importance of customer care. A special speaker was GM Vice President of Global Design Mike Simcoe, who came from Detroit to personally show the dealers the cutting-edge Chevrolet Bolt EV, new Chevrolet Cruze, GMC Terrain and new Chevrolet Traverse. The team also introduced Maven, GM’s flexible mobility platform that is offering multiple car-sharing products for consumers and businesses. A tech talk followed, with dealers learning more about Google and Facebook, and the growing connection between the automotive

industry and global technology companies. According to Jacoby, “The future for GM will be about technology and innovation, as we strive to create a safer and more enjoyable driving experience while taking the lead in connectivity, ridesharing, alternative propulsion and autonomous driving.” This year’s program closed on May 9 with a gala awards dinner, during which the dealers were officially declared Grandmasters. Speaking at the awards dinner, GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand Managing Director Wail A. Farghaly said: “Congratulations to all of our award-winning dealers. You have been instrumental in the growth of GM and Chevrolet in Thailand. You have set a great example for your fellow dealers, and we are proud to have each of you as a partner.” “On behalf of Chevrolet Chokchai (Rattanahirun Autosales Co., Ltd.), I would like to thank Chevrolet Sales Thailand to give
me the precious opportunity to attend the Grand Master Award Ceremony 2017 in New York,” said Chokpitak Srihiranrat, retailer operator Rattanahirun Autosales Co., Ltd. “I was impressed with how well organized the whole event was. I was able to visit Google and Facebook headquarters and learn about new digital trends. More importantly, I visited GM headquarters and experienced the advanced technology in our products. I feel very confident in the Chevrolet brand. It is the strongest brand in the world.” The Grandmasters Award is aligned with Chevrolet’s commitment to putting customers at the center of everything. All the award recipients need to continuously enhance customer service quality and provide customers with positive ownership experience. Chevrolet works closely with its dealers to achieve excellence with dedicated campaigns across various communications platforms and customer touch-points.

The Royal Cliff Hotels Group and Pattaya Exhibition And Convention Hall (PEACH) was chosen venue for the 21st Annual Meeting of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of Thailand. The PIDST meeting is held annually to gather Thailand’s pediatric doctors from across the country to share new knowledge, exchange ideas and strengthen the bond between them. Distinguished doctors along with their families participated in daily exhibitions, lunch symposiums, insightful meetings and workshops as well as enjoyed the hotel’s luxurious facilities. “We have been planning this event for almost a year. Because we have a big number of participants, choosing the venue was the most critical part for us,” Dr. Tawee Chotpitayasunondh, president of PIDST and a member of the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand said. “We chose the Royal Cliff
Hotels Group and PEACH because both venues serve our objectives very well with what they offer. The hotels and convention center provide impressive spaces for meetings or exhibitions and can cater to a large number of participants. The family- friendly facilities on site are also perfect for doctors who brought their families with them as they can also relax and experience a good holiday. All in all, everything truly exceeds our expectations. ”

Primary’s porridge production proves popular by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona Primary students from Garden International School (GIS) have staged a popular musical performance of "Porridge". With a full house in to watch, the children gave star performances as they worked their way through scheming bears and billy goats, silly police officers, a kidnapped cow and a host of happy nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters. The choir sang with enthusiasm and everyone had a great night. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya’s “Rock the School” granted scholarships to impoverished students in Chonburi. “Rock the School” was formed by the hotel’s management team and philanthropic committees and helps students develop their potential and aims to support students in grades 7 to 12 (ages 13 to 18) from lowincome backgrounds by granting a 28,000-baht scholarship per student per academic year until they graduate from high school or vocational school. The project gave scholarships to five students in 2014, another five students in 2015, another eight students in 2016 and six students this season. The “Rock the School” project has 24 students under its care in 2017. This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories Alois Brunner, assuming he is still in the land of the living, is about to celebrate his centenary in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Many researchers believe it. But few former Nazis have had so many conspiracy theories swirling around them as this collaborator of Adolf
Eichmann who sent thousands of Jewish men, women and children to their deaths in the camps in the early 1940s. An Austrian citizen born in April 1912, Brunner fled to Syria in the 1950s where he gave interviews to German and American newspapers. As late as 1987 he is known to have
The world’s 100-year-old Nazi
Alois Brunner could be in Damascus been still alive, remarking in a magazine interview, “The Jews were garbage and deserved to die.” The former SS captain added that he would do the same again if he had the chance. All attempts to have Brunner extradited failed. Until today, the Syrian government has refused to discuss him or the possibility he might have taken up residence in Syria. There were rumours that the East German secret police, the Stasi, were about to move in and capture Brunner in an undercover operation in 1989. However, the fall of the Berlin Wall the same year ended all such hopes. Or so we are invited to believe. As late as 2007 the Austrian government was reported offering 50,000 euros for information leading to his arrest. Now disclosures that 518 pages of secret documents on Brunner disappeared in 2011 from the German BND (the equivalent of Britain’s MI6) have caused another rash of theories, not to mention embarrassment in the security services.
The BND’s in-house historians recently revealed that staff ordered the Brunner file wiped off the computers at some point in the late 1990s. Suspicions of a cover-up have been raised because Brunner is thought to have worked for the BND in Syria, as its Damascus agent, following his flight. There still is extant a handwritten document from 1997 which records a conversation with Volker Foertsch, then head of security in the BND, in which he stated he knew for a fact that the espionage rumours about Brunner were true. Evidence surrounding the missing Brunner file is contained in reports submitted to the BND’s then head which stated that they had contained material on the fugitive Nazi dating from 1957 to 1964, dealing with the man’s postwar life. However, these reports go on to say that there was no evidence that he had worked officially for the German or Austrian governments at any time. The murky revelations
about Brunner follow disclosures that the BND knew of Adolf Eichmann’s whereabouts prior to his capture in Argentina by Israeli agents in 1960 as well as claims that the organization regularly used Nazi war criminals as agents both in Europe and the United States. In 2004 a new technology, facial recognition software, stated that there was a 95 percent likelihood that a wartime photo of Alois Brunner matched one of Georg Fischer taken in Syria some 40 years later. But critics said the technology was less
reliable when trying to match photos of two men so many years apart. Meanwhile, there was a quite separate report that Brunner was now living in Brazil, although a supposed match of two sets of fingerprints proved false. Finally in 2009 the Simon Wiesenthal Centre announced it was “unlikely” that Brunner was still alive but was aware that investigations were continuing. If he is still living it’s a fair bet that the Syrian government won’t announce his demise. They have a lot of other things on their mind at the moment.

Local Sports Landis wins afternoon delight by Derek Brook Laem Chabang - St Greetings and straight drives to all. This week the Tropical golfers decided to try something different and play golf under the stars and the lights. More on that later. Laem Chabang has a special price for “night golf ”, so if you want to try this course and also beat (or wait out) the heat, it is something to try. Ten Tropical Golfers decided to give this idea a test, and met at BJ's Lodge for the group and ride assignments. Laem Chabang currently charges 2150 baht for the “night golf ” which means a tee time of 3:30 pm or later. A good way to stay cool this time of the year, and just the B-course is lighted. Things went well, but not exactly to plan. The idea was to play the difficult C-links and then get to the lighted side around dusk. The Tropical golfers arrived early however, and the caddies, eager to finish their

shift, got us out 30 minutes ahead of time. With an empty course and two three-balls, we got around quickly, and just the last group played a few holes under the lights. Yes it was cooler, but you'd better hit the fairway to find your ball. Even with the lights, it’s not the same as daytime. Still, it’s a cheaper and cooler way to treat yourself to this excellent venue. It’s also difficult, as the scores, save one, attest. The clear winner this day
evening, was Landis Brooks (c/h 9) who has the golfing skill to properly navigate this excellent Nicklaus design. The stableford scores then dropped quickly with Daryl Evans (25) scoring 32, then came Brian Parish (13) with 30, and Dick Warberg (19) surprised himself announcing his own name with 29 points. Don't ask about the rest. Best Nines (nonwinner): Tom Herrington, Mick Coghlan

Pattana (Stableford) I remember someone, not me, saying, “The worst day on a golf course is better than the best day at work.” Well apart from the fact I have had some really great days at work I cannot remember a worse day on the golf course, not the courses fault mind, than this, and I won! When it is raining in Pattaya, I get phone calls nearly every time we go to play, by people who want to know if we are going to play. On this day, I got none as it was not raining, so we met at BJ’s and off we went to Pattana after checking that there was no rain there and checking the weather forecast that showed all should be well. Arriving there, it was a quick change and onto the first tee and we were to play the A & C in that order. We knew it had been raining lately so lift, clean and place was put in before we started. As the first group, off we went and A1 was damp underfoot but not bad, so onto A2 and tee off. Then the first drops started to fall, still down to the green as it started to fall harder. Onto the green, put out, and the rain got a bit harder so we dashed to the next hole, a par 3 and John hit his tee shot near the pin, as I bent down to put my tee in, the thunder and lightning started and we all dashed for the rest stop near us. Soon the next three groups
Interested spectator on the 7th at Bangpra
Bangpra Stableford (White Tees) “Some days are diamond, some days are stone” so sang John Denver many years ago. There were certainly no diamonds today at Bangpra. Out of a field of golfer’s, only two managed to get to 31 points, hard to imagine everybody could play so badly on the same day, usually, someone manages to rise above the rest but not today. One of the main problems was the greens, nobody can remember a time when the greens were so slow on a course renowned for ultra fast greens. There can be no other explanation, the weather was fine albeit be a bit hot and humid, there was no wind or rain. There were, however, a few strokes worthy of note. On the par three 12th, Dave Gow put his first in the water, he pulled his second left, hit a tree and bounced forward and almost onto the green with the water beckoning for the second time. On the following Dave also visited the water again followed by two of his three playing partners; it seemed that today the ball flight was much shorter than normal and many people seemed to under club, understandable in dark overcast conditions when the air is heavy, but not under bright clear blue skies. As is often the case at this course there was the opportunity to commune with nature and on the seventh, there was a rather large water monitor taking a view of proceedings. He garnered a lot of interest from a safe distance, I might add. Results: 1st - Colin Greig (11) 31 points oco (18) 2nd - Ross schiffke (19) 31 points (16) 3rd - Les Hall (23) 30 points Near pins: Ross Schiffke, Stuart Tinkler, Mike Brett, Tony Robbins
Winner and runner up joined us as the thunder crashed and the lightning flashed. For the best part of an hour we waited as the rain fell. Normally this is when it stops, so as it dropped to a slow rain we got to the tee and got away. So it brightened then got dark and we always hoped it would fully stop but it never did. Wet and miserable we battled on and it felt really cold so we did not drink water. Later discussion showed that several of the players had problems and we could only put it down to the seeming cold of the rain stopping players from drinking and several of us showed distress we later put down to dehydration. One of the players from the last group said he had never played 18 holes in the rain as the last group did. All were shattered, for me all my towels were wet as was every bit of my clothing, it is
unpleasant. Even all my gloves were soaking but these golfers are tough. As we walked around the fairways were deep in water in places, and it was nearly impossible to get a dry lie, except strangely on the greens which were playable all the way around. It makes you think ‘Why do we do it’, the answer is because we know no better. No sense, no feeling! If it really pours down you pack in, but if it just rains you keep going and here we have no wet-weather gear. A rule of golf and rain is no reason to stop. Never been so miserable in my life, as had half the players. Finished, I would like to say we all felt better, but no, it made for a miserable night. However the drive back was warm and dry. I would like to take credit for playing well, but the truth is I was so cold and wet I just
Treasure Hill Stableford (Yellow Tees) Not for the first time in recent weeks a golf report is dominated by weather. Overnight heavy rain in Pattaya was followed by intermittent showers in the morning. Our resident expert in all matters meteorological, Geoff Parker, assured us that it would not rain at the golf course today as happened on Monday. As we proceeded up 331 to Treasure Hill, the sky in the distance looked menacing and as we arrived at the course heavy rain was again falling, necessitating a 15-minute coffee break. We teed off in a light drizzle which after three holes became increasingly heavy and the rest of the round was completed in varying degrees of
rain, but never dry. As the course was wet the pick, clean, and place rule was applied. After nine, a few players decided that wet weather golf was not their cup of tea and retired to the clubhouse, the more dedicated ones persevered to the end. Despite the inclement weather, scoring today was of a high standard. Les Humphrey made his debut in the winner’s circle taking third place with 37 points, 22 on the front nine. Colin Greig continued his recent run of good form with Geoff Parker winning the count back for second. For about the fifth game in a row Neil Carter secured a near pin, all of them very close. It seems just a matter of time before he nails a hole in one. Results: 1st - Colin Greig (11) 38 points 2nd - Geoff Parker (15) 37 oco (16) 3rd - Les Humphrey (31) 37 points (15) Near pins: Les Humphrey, Tony Robbins, Neil Carter, Colin Greig Eastern Star Stableford (White Tees) The Bunker Boys made their way to the seldom visited Eastern Star Course for the last round of the week. We had one withdrawal after nine holes due to illness, not the kind of alcohol related illness you might expect in Pattaya, this time it was suspected food poisoning and not much fun either. This is a course that many people find difficult and so it was today also, even though it was in fine condition following recent rain. Neil Carter jumped out of the blocks on the front nine with 21 points and carried on his merry way for a few holes on the back nine only to lose a ball up a coconut palm tree and subsequently wipe consecutive holes. A notable golf commentator once said that one of the best assets you can have on a golf course is a very short memory, don’t dwell on a disaster hole and drag it around for a few more holes before you put it away and get on with the rest of the round; easier said than done. Despite his two wipes, Neil returned a fine score beating his handicap to take first place while Stuart Tinkler won the count back for second, beating Mike Lloyd recently returned from the UK. Results: 1st - Neil Carter (13) 37 points 2nd - Stuart Tinkler (14) 29 oco (14) 3rd - Mike Lloyd (16) 29 points (13) Near pins: Stuart Tinkler, Neil Carter, Mashi Kenata, Les Humphrey
Interested spectator on the 7th at Bangpra kept plodding on and hitting the ball out of puddles. Or maybe because I was in the first group. So the winner on the day was Derek Brook with 37 points ahead of Brian Parish
in second with 36 points. We then had a three way countback on 35 points that saw Dick Warberg in third, Mashi Kaneta in fourth and Landis just missing out. Then I tested the Singha
Lights with the blue tops and found out why they are blue, because they have more alcohol and next morning I felt blue. T.T.F.N. Near Pins: Landis (2), John Anderson AVD

Local Sports TGC write up St. Andrews – Stableford – White Tees If you can’t stand the heat, get off the tee box, as the old saying goes. May is definitely the hottest and most humid month in Pattaya, and some days even our magical microclimate cannot save us. The week started off hot, but a huge cell over South-East Asia came in mid-week. We had a hell of a storm (localized) but that helped cool things off and the rest of the week was overcast but fairly pleasant. The usual suspects were up on the leaderboard, and a lucky visitor by the name of Bob Kenyan joined them with third place. Gary and Terry have both had a heck of a run lately. Today it was Gary with a bit of an advantage as both had 36, but Gary edged out Terry with his win on the Caddy Smile near pin. Results: T-1st – Gary Emmett (17) 36 points T-1st –Terry Dyer (18) 36 points 3rd – Bob Kenyan (16) 35 points Pleasant Valley – Stableford – White Tees We only get out here three or four times a year, and the course gets mixed reviews on most outings. It is a fine little track but certainly not on the top of our playlist. To think that you will drive past Khao Kheow to get here makes me think twice about booking here again.

Those Aussies are back at it, with three of four slots on the podium. Gary Hookey and Robbie Taylor must have been feeding off each other and both ended tied for third with 36. It is good to see Kenny Aihara feeling better and scoring like he used to, and 40 points is good shooting on any course. It was Terry Dyer (OK, a transplanted Kiwi!) who did best here today and his 42 is a great score. Nice shooting, Terry! Results: 1 st –Terry Dyer(19) 42 points 2nd– Kenny Aihara (6) 40 points T –3rd– Gary Hookey (20) 36 points T – 3rd– Robbie Taylor (14) 36 points Greenwood A&B – Stableford – Yellow Tees Greenwood greeted us in superb condition and this course remains one of the best, and best value, in the Pattaya area. There was a bit of rain on the way out but that cleared by the first tee. These days, you must play lift, clean and place for an enjoyable round for everyone. It was the A and B tracks that were assigned to us today so off to our 9:34 am tee time with 16 golfers on the sheet Terry Dyer must be our golfer of the week and 40 points out here is a great number. Like Kenny, who took the NTP today, it is good to see Peter Thomas back in form and 41
Kenny Aihara and Peter Thomas helping Steve Coughlan lift his trophy! points out here puts Pete back in the frame. That is keeping your cool when your wife outdrives you on the first hole! Has Pete found his mojo again? Story of the month is our winner Steve Coughlan, who has been playing with us for years and never, ever won any comp. OK, he’s one of our high, high handicappers but that doesn’t stop Steve from loving the game and giving his best. Steve received a great round of applause at Capt. Phil’s presentation as finally Steve came good with his best ever score of 42 points! We gotta give some credit to Gary Emmett along with John and Jeff out at the St. Andrews Golf Centre for helping Coughlan with his game and hopefully we will see results like this more often, right Gary? Results: 1st – Steve Coughlan (36) 42 points 2nd – Peter Thomas (18) 41 points 3rd – Terry Dyer (17) 40 points
Emerald - Stableford – White Tees We round off the week with a jaunt down south to visit one of the nicest golf courses around, The Emerald. This is a Nick Faldo/Desmond Muirhead design that features the best collection of par-3’s of any course. Condition of the course was good, but not great as the greens had recently been sanded and a bit rough. That said, the guys had a great time out there. Woody is back in the swing of things and 32 gets the flying Scotsman third place. Robbie Taylor is up there once more with a solid 37 on the card. Robbie doubled his pleasure by nicking that Caddy Smile near pin as well. Winner, winner Chicken dinner goes to Kenny (nice shot) Aihara and 39 on the card puts him on top of the heap. With a 40 on Tuesday and 39 today, Kenny is back in form and looking forward to next week’s golf! Lastly, I must mention our buddies from the Guzzlers and Famous Fattboyz Slopitch softball tournament this last weekend. Cheers to Bob Waraska and Armando Delsi for a great time out at the Siam Polo Park and hope you guys get back here soon! You & Your Pets Learn From Your Pet Take Naps You won't catch your pet going from dawn to dusk without any shut-eye. There's good evidence humans can benefit from catnaps, too. A study involving about 24,000 people indicates regular nappers are 37 percent less likely to die from heart disease than people who nap only occasionally. Short naps can also enhance alertness and job performance. Walk Every Day Whether you've got four legs or two, walking is one of the safest, easiest ways to burn calories and boost heart health. Taking regular walks can also help you: • Fight depression • Lose weight • Lower your risk for type 2 diabetes • Lower the risk of breast and colon cancer • Keep your bones strong • Keep your mind sharp Live in the Moment Living in the moment may be one of the most important lessons we can learn from our pets. In one study, Harvard psychologists concluded that people are happiest when doing activities that keep the mind focused, such as sex or exercise. Planning, reminiscing, or thinking about anything other than the current activity can undermine happiness. Get a Back Rub The power of touch is nothing to sniff at. Massage
Cats for You in Pattaya therapy can ease pain, give the immune system a boost, and help manage chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. The touch of a loved one may be even more powerful. In one study, married women experienced less anxiety over the threat of an electric shock when they held their husbands' hands.
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago. When she was just a kitten she had a broken leg, so missed the opportunity to be chosen. She loves helping in the garden but is just as happy indoors.
Be Aware of Body Language Dogs are excellent at reading each other's intent from body language. Humans, not so much. While most of us do reveal our emotions through posture, speech patterns, and eye contact, other people generally aren't very good at reading those cues. People get better at decoding body language as they get older. Stretch Often Stretching will keep you limber, but the benefits don't stop there. In a 10-week study, participants experienced surprising physical changes when they did no exercise other than stretching. Besides improving flexibility, they increased their muscle strength, power, and endurance. Stretching may be a good alternative for people who have conditions that rule out traditional strength-training and vigorous exercise.
Splash
This friendly girl came to us with 2 lovely kittens both of which were quickly re-homed. Splash has lost the sight in her left eye but that does not hinder her at all. Sadly it means that noone has chosen her yet.
Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well-being
Buzz & Holly
We are trying to find a loving new home for Holly and her kitten Buzz, they were rescued on Christmas day from one of our local temples. Holly has now been neutered and they are both vaccinated: the pair are very friendly and playful and really need to go to a new home together if possible.

Dogs aren’t terribly selective about food and other objects they gulp down—particularly if they’re allowed to roam the neighborhood. Not that cats and other household pets are flawless in choosing what they swallow. Virtually all species, from time to time, guzzle unsuitable foodstuff. But when that seemingly edible morsel turns out to contain a risky bone or a chunk of solid matter that won’t go down or come back up, emergency measures are called for. When choking, your pet will probably signal his difficulty by coughing, making choking sounds, or pawing at the mouth. Do your best to keep the animal calm until you can get him to a veterinarian. But use caution—a choking pet is more likely to bite in its panic. Carefully look into the animal’s mouth. If you see the obstruction, gently try to remove it with tweezers, being careful not to push the object further down the
Wilber
throat. If it’s not easy to reach, don't delay in getting your pet to the vet. If the animal collapses, place both hands on the side of his rib cage and apply firm quick pressure, or lay your pet on its side and strike the rib cage firmly with the palm of your hand three or four times to sharply push air out of the lungs and expel the object. Keep repeating this until the object is dislodged or until you arrive at the veterinarian's office.
Going to the Dogs...
This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his 3 brothers and sisters. Sadly he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home. As you can see he is grown up now and still waiting to be chosen!
Cat Corner Tip
We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults. Heaven has accorded this to us in the uncritical canine attachment.
~George Eliot
The Mayans and Aztecs symbolized every 10th day with the dog, and those born under this sign were believed to have outstanding leadership skills. The term “dog days of summer” was coined by the ancient Greeks and Romans to describe the hottest days of summer that coincided with the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. During the Middle Ages, cats were associated with witchcraft, and on St. John’s Day people all over Europe would stuff them into sacks and toss the cats into bonfires. On holy days, people celebrated by tossing cats from church towers.
Veggie Burger? Not all cats like vegetables, and even fewer like fruits (felines can't taste "sweet"). But fruits and vegetables are a rich source of vitamins, and they're loaded with fiber and water to help with digestion. Try enticing your cat with fresh cucumber or cantaloupe, steamed broccoli or asparagus, or mashed potatoes. Although you might have better luck slipping him a veggie burger. Really!
