10-year visa arrives

T

he government has finally agreed the bones of a new 10 year visa which will be introduced nationally in mid-August.

Aimed at wealthier retirees who must be at least 50 years old, applicants are required to have 3 million baht in a Thai bank account or 1.8 million in the account and proof of income from abroad of 1.2 million.

Other requirements are medical insurance - outpatient and inpatient cover - from a Thai insurer and a police clearance certificate from your home country. However, the new visa is optional and does not replace the current one year retirement extension which requires only 800,000 baht without the need for insurance or home country

police clearance.

The new visa “O/X� will be issued for two separate periods of five years, with unlimited re-entry rights, but with the need to report the Thai address every 90 days the holder spends in Thailand. Any kind of employment, including voluntary work, continues to be outlawed in this new visa.

Some details are still

unclear, for example how long in advance of the visa application the cash must be deposited in the bank and whether there are restrictions on the type of account to be used. The details published so far make no mention of the details of proof of Thai address or the controversial TM30 form which has already created Continued on page 4

News Police unveil den of iniquity

A naked undercover agent was discovered with a prostitute during a raid on Rioja Gentlemen’s Club, according to Narit Niramaiwong, Banglamung district chief. Police also found several foreigners relaxing in a Jacuzzi, some women reportedly available for sexual services, and a club manager, Yardung Tangkwa, who was arrested.

Katoey robs Iranian; ho hum

Iranian Arman Karimi was reportedly robbed of 5,000 baht by a ladyboy after he rebuffed her offer of sexual services. Arman was approached by “a beautiful woman” and offered sex for 1,000 baht, he said. The tourist agreed and they set off for his hotel on her motorbike. But as he fondled his potential lover, Arman discovered she was a he. Arman said he immediately jumped off the motorbike, whereupon the katoey picked up a beer bottle, demanded the victim’s cash, and sped off into the night.

Mafia shots Mafioso

Tour guide Panchapat Wattanakit, 33, was arrested for stealing 7,000 baht and 400 Chinese yuan from Chinese customers. The victims reported the theft to police, who later learned that Panchapat was not licensed as a tour guide. The suspect said she took the money to pay her debts.

Play money paid for baht-bus ride

A reputed Thai mafia member Rotjanawat Wongjamnong was killed in his family’s home by fellow gang members, according to the victim’s mother. The woman reported that “more than 10 mafia gang members” broke into her house in search of her son, accusing him of stealing a Buddha amulet. The son argued that he took it as payment for money the suspects borrowed from him. Despite pleas from the elderly woman, a gang member shot her son in the mouth, killing him.

Admirer rapes woman

Baht-bus driver Manee Phujula, 63, reported to police that a Middle Eastern man used fake currency to pay his fare.

The driver learned that he had been ripped off when he tried to exchange the 20-pound notes at a currency exchange shop.

An unidentified man broke into the apartment of a 34-yearold Thai woman and raped her in bed. Holding a knife to her neck, the rapist told his victim that he was enamored with her had been waiting for the right time to attack her. Police are on it.

Foreign workers arrested

More than 250 foreigners without work permits were arrested when 50 military and police officers raided their living quarters on Thappraya Soi 4. The bulk of those arrested worked in construction, as did Thais living in the same area. The owner of the location was yet to be determined.

Motorbike stolen and recovered

Anucha Ponchom, 31, parked his motorbike on Soi Bongkot in South Pattaya, entered the nearby convenience store, returned to find his motorbike gone. A witness saw 24-year-old Sujinda Sette drive off on the motorbike. Anucha was familiar with the suspect because he often gives him food and money.

Police later found stolen bike and suspect on Soi Land Office.

Sujinda argued that he did not steal the bike; he borrowed it. and caught the suspect and retrieve the motorbike.

Thai Army invades Pattaya

The Thai Army and more than 100 police officers led by Narit Niramaiwong, Banglamung district chief, raided Pattaya bars and night clubs in search of prostitutes, drugs and underage imbibers. Disappointingly, they found and apprehended only a few minors. But they will be back, they warned, to ensure that owners of nightspots in Pattaya adhere to the rules.

Our immigration correspondent said, “The 10 year alternative does not have any particular advantages over the old one year extension of stay, apart from abolishing the need to reapply annually. But it may appeal to some richer retirees in their 50s or 60s who will feel the new regulations give them more security.” He added that many aged retirees will find it difficult or impossibly expensive to obtain medical insurance, especially if they have pre-existing conditions.

Police clearance certificates in some countries are not easy to obtain.

The new visa seeks to broaden the base of foreigners who will have medical insurance, thus arguably reducing the financial burden on Thai public hospitals. A separate proposal, not yet confirmed, is that all short-term, foreign tourists will need travel insurance - although that

is much less comprehensive than full medical cover. If implemented, that would leave the one year extension of stay foreigners - retirees, students and those with a Thai spouse - the only group not requiring some form of insurance. At any rate for now.

Our correspondent says that the possession of insurance does not always result in less financial strain on hospitals. Travel insurance basically covers hospitalization for an unforeseen accident but is far from comprehensive for other illnesses.

Full medical insurance also has its limitations as it frequently excludes some health problems, discriminates against the elderly for obvious reasons and contains small-print regulations which may result in refusal to cover costs when a claim is made.

Pattaya Today will update the details in August when the new 10 year visa is to be launched.

According to UK government sources there are far fewer British nationals visiting Thailand these days. The number per year peaked in 2012 at about one million and has now slumped to under 450,000, or so it is alleged. The claims are made in the annual survey of British behavior abroad which in turn is based on figures of the Thai tourist industry.

However, some care must be exercised in believing the slump at its face value. Thai immigration authorities count every arrival at airports or land borders as a “new” person which can be misleading.

For example, a foreigner entering Thailand three times in a year would clock up as three “new” arrivals.

In the past, many tourists (including Brits) used to make regular trips to the land borders of Thailand to renew their permission to stay even without a prior visa. Some of these visitors thus entered Thailand every single month, after crossing briefly into Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar, and thus appeared in the statistics as 12 arrivals in a calendar year.

As is well known, immigration rules have been progressively tightened since the military coup of May 2014. Foreigners without a prior visa and crossing into Thailand by land are now restricted to two entries per calendar year. There is no formal restriction on such arrivals by air, although immigration officers can refuse entry if they believe the visitor is coming too often without

good reason. There is no problem by land or air if the foreigner has a valid and prior double- or multiple-entry visa or an unexpired re-entry permit.

In other words, there probably never were a million UK visitors to Thailand every year because of the double, triple or whatever counting of arriving individuals. 450,000 is likely a more accurate total although boosted by expats with one-year visas or work permits who still travel in and out of the country on a regular basis. An immigration source told Pattaya Today that each arrival at land crossings or airports still counts as “plus one” irrespective of previous travel history.

But some Pattaya business sources told Pattaya Today that, statistical quirks notwithstanding, there has certainly been a drop in the number of Britons coming to this resort.

They point to data from hotels which show increasing total of Asian guests whilst the total of ‘farang’ arrivals drops steadily every year. Bar owners, especially in South Pattaya which was traditionally a British hotspot, said UK nationals were now much less in evidence on Walking Street and in the open bars of Soi Buakhao. The British numbers attending traditionally popular venues, including quiz nights and some expat clubs, are said to be down.

The reasons are a matter for speculation but probably include negative international publicity (the Koh Tao murders), the fall in

the value of the pound since last year’s Brexit referendum and the attractions of neighbouring countries.

For example, long-stay expats can obtain 10-year visas in Malaysia which include the right to purchase property and to work part-time in certain sectors. Others are lured by the easy visa rules in Cambodia where one-year permissions to stay can be obtained for as little as $300 and little or no paperwork. The relaxation of visa rules in Vietnam, which currently allows UK nationals to stay a month without a prior visa, may also have played a part.

Even so, the impact on the local Pattaya economy should not be overstated. The number of retirement visas for European expats, including Brits, has not shown much of a decline. Several bars and restaurants, especially on the “dark side”, the Mabprachan Lake area and in the residential enclaves of South Pattaya, said they were still dependent on the British market. They said the main difference was that Brits were staying for shorter periods. Property experts said that British condominium purchasers and renters were still a significant market force.

A Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) source said, “We are still seeing many British tourists in popular resort cities and in Bangkok, but now there are more and more family visitors rather than sole travelers.”

This debate is likely to be with us for many years to come.

News Parker Heads Field for inaugural Ladies European Thailand Championship in Pattaya Ladies European Tour together with Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club and KhonRak Golf Co.,Ltd., in support of Sports Authority of Thailand and Thai LPGA are organizing the inaugural edition of Ladies European Thailand Championship 2017 which will be held July 6 to 9, 2017 at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club, Pattaya –with total purse money of 300,000 euros (appx.

12 million baht) and special hole-in-one prizes. The tournament returns to Thailand after 12 years.

LET champion Florentyna Parker will be aiming for back-to-back victories on the Ladies European Tour when she plays here.

The 28-year-old Englishwoman, who recently claimed her third title at the Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open in Spain, will have plenty of goals when she tees up in the new event.

Now in her ninth year on tour, she will be eager to build on her sensational start to the season. Currently lying in third place on the LET order of merit after four appearances, she will need to finish in fourth spot or better in Thailand to overtake the current OOM leader. She will also have a chance to take the lead in the European Solheim Cup rankings as she targets a place on the team in Iowa.

Parker said, “I am really looking forward to seeing Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club for the first time and playing in the inaugural Ladies European Thailand Championship. It looks like a stunning place and with a quality field of LET and Thai LPGA players, I am sure that it will be a fantastic new event.

“As this is one of the last three events to count for The Solheim Cup, it is also a very exciting tournament for me personally. My goal for the last two years has been to be part of the European team. With a good result in Thailand, I can get very close to confirming my place.

In the last tournament that I played on the LET, I won a thrilling play-off, so I am still feeling very confident and I can’t wait to get started in Pattaya.”

The tournament will also feature a strong French challenge, with the 2008 order of merit winner Gwladys Nocera relishing a return to Thailand. The 42-year-old holds fond memories of finishing second to Shani Waugh after a play-off at the Thailand Ladies Open, played at Alpine Golf and Sports Club in Bangkok in 2005, during her third season on tour.

She has since become one of the leading names in European women’s golf, amassing 14 tournament victories all around the world from 2006-2015, the most recent of which was the LallaMeryem Cup in Morocco.

She also holds the all-time LET record for the lowest 72-hole winning total of 29-under-par.

Nocera said: “I love Thailand, I’ve been there a couple of times, and each time it’s a real pleasure. Plus, I’m always looking forward to a tournament, I love to compete, so this is one more opportunity for me. The only expectation I have is to enjoy the week and play my best. I’m feeling good, in shape... so let’s have fun!”

Among the rising stars in the field is Nuria Iturrios, 21, from Mallorca, who shot to prominence when she won the LallaMeryem Cup as a rookie in early 2016.

Currently lying in 17th place on the order of merit

after a solid start to this season, she cannot wait to visit Thailand for the first time and said: “I’m excited to get the chance to go and play there and discover a new place.

I know there are some great Thai players, but I don’t know how popular women’s golf is there, so if, with this event, we can help them to make it more visible and bring more players to the game, it would be great.I’ve been recovering from a small injury over the last few weeks, but I think I’m completely recovered now and I hope I can play my best golf and be amongst the last groups on the Sunday.”

The other rising stars in the field include Anne Van Dam from the Netherlands, who claimed her first trophy at the Xiamen International Ladies Open in China in October, Annabel Dimmock from England, who finished third in the recent LallaMeryem Cup in Morocco and Jenny Haglund from Sweden, currently the leading first year player on tour after a tied eighth place finish in the Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open in Spain.

Following our recent coverage of What Happens After Death, here are some topics brought up by readers.

CAN A FARANG BE EXECUTOR? Yes, absolutely no problem with choosing a farang to administer the estate, provided the person or persons are named in the will. Normally, one executor is enough unless the will is complex. It is best to ensure that an executor is based, at least part of the year, in Thailand.

WHAT DOES THE EXECUTOR DO? He or she makes sure the terms of the will are carried out. This may involve contacting the various parties in touch after the death, attending the Thai court to seek probate (permission to implement), arranging property sale.

WHAT IF THE EXECUTOR DOESN’T SPEAK THAI? The executor normally appoints a Thai law company to carry out many of the instructions. For example, the lawyer will accompany you to the probate court and will prepare documents for your signature. It is not difficult to delegate many of the responsibilities.

WHAT IF THE WILL IS CONTESTED? Anyone contesting a will, for example a relative who has been excluded, has the right to challenge the will in court. All parties to the dispute will be heard by the presiding judge who will then make a judgment based on the information he receives. Because of the need to involve lawyers, these court hearings can end up being very expensive.

MUST A WILL BE IN THAI? No, but it would be translated into Thai by an accredited translator. The best wills are probably those which are already in two languages - Thai and English or whatever - when the documentation is first drawn up.

When making a will, draw this to the attention of the lawyer.

HOW MUCH DOES A FUNERAL COST? Burials are more or less a no-no, but cremations start at around 20,000 baht. However, this would be in a rural-area temple and be conducted without too many ceremonies. In city areas, the average cost is about 50,000 baht but much depends on the location and the ceremonies actually requested and carried out. For an elaborate send-off, 100,000 baht would not be unusual.

WHAT IS THE EMBASSY ROLE? It is very limited. The embassy has to issue a letter of release to allow the funeral director to take the body away from the mortuary. The embassy will issue the letter once it is clear that the deceased’s next of kin has been informed. This is normally a straightforward procedure, but not in every case.

HOW IS THE MORTICIAN CHOSEN? The executor or the next of kin will normally choose the funeral director.

If necessary, embassies keep their own list. In Thailand, funeral directors usually offer a very comprehensive service. There is little for mourners to do except to turn up at the appointed time at the temple.

CAN THE BODY BE SENT OVERSEAS? Yes, there is no problem here unless the will specifically states cremation in Thailand. Before transportation by air, the body has to be specially treated and placed in a non-traditional coffin used for international flights. Costs average around 300,000 baht for the whole service to Europe.

IS AN AUTOPSY COMPULSORY? In Thailand, autopsies are conducted at the discretion of the police.

They are routine unless the deceased had a long illness with detailed hospital records. Autopsies are mostly conducted at the Police Hospital in Bangkok. Relatives of the deceased can request a second autopsy either in Thailand or overseas. All autopsies require payment of a fee.

News Thailand announces 14 Thai tourism favourites as voted by Chinese visitors The Tourism Authority of Thailand announced the 14 most popular tourist attractions and activities as well as medical and wellness services in Thailand among Chinese tourists, as a result of the much anticipated “2017 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted

by Chinese Tourists” campaign.

H.E. General Tanasak Patimapragorn, deputy prime minister of Thailand, and H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports, presided over the “2017 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” ceremony at the Muang Thai GMM Live House, 8th Floor, CentralWorld.

The winners of the 2017 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists are:

TAT organised the voting campaign in partnership with Tencent, which owns a number of Chinese online channels; such as, WeChat (570 million users per day), QZone

(330 million users per day), QQMusic (70 million users per day) and Tencent News (27 million users per day).

Chinese who have travelled to Thailand were invited to vote via the website www. peopleschoiceawardsthailand.com between May 26 to June 8, 2017, in 14 categories; such as tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, medical and wellness services, spas, shopping centres, golf courses, etc. The voting attracted a total of 3.7 million votes, and the publicity given to this activity was estimated to reach an audience of 45 million.

They were enticed to participating in the voting activity with a lucky draw prize. The first prize is a five-day holiday for two in Thailand, including return air tickets on Thai Airways International and accommodation. The next five prizes are also return air tickets for two to Thailand on Thai Smile Airways, NokScoot

Airlines, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways and Thai Lion Air. Over 100 other prizes are also being offered including vouchers for accommodation, spa treatments, dining, shows and entertainment, and much more.

TAT launched the “People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” project in 2015 as The Best of Thailand Awards Voted by Chinese Tourists, and renamed it to the current name in 2016. In its second year, the voting attracted over 3.2 million votes.

During the first four months of this year, Thailand welcomed 12 million visitors, spending around 620 billion baht, an increase of 4.71 percent from the same period last year.

In this number, 7.5 million came from East Asia generating 308 billion baht. China remained the leading source market at about 3.2 million arrivals, who generated 161 billion baht in tourism revenue.

Thailand Travel Mart 2017 ends successful two-year run in Chiang Mai, moves to Pattaya in 2018 Thailand’s main travel trade show, the Thailand Travel Mart Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion (TTM+) has ended a successful two-year run in the Northern capital of Chiang Mai, and will move to the resort city of Pattaya in 2018.

The event has given extensive exposure to the rich culture, cuisine and heritage of Northern Thailand and highlighted its overland cross-border proximity to the emerging Mekong region destinations of Lao PDR and Myanmar.

The theme “Delivering Unique Experiences” was

designed to be in line with the overall tourism marketing slogan. All the pre and posttours were specially selected to include the spectacular range of Royal Projects, Northern Thai museums, restaurants, community-based products and heritage sites in line with that theme.

The event was attended by 423 buyers from 56 countries.

Although the main markets of China, India, Russia, Europe and the UK dominated the list, the focus was on buyers from eastern European countries, Latin America and South Africa. Moreover, first-time buyers comprised 47.8 percent of the total.

This year, the show was attended by 362 sellers from Thailand and the neighbouring Mekong countries, the vast majority of whom were small and medium sized hotels and boutique resorts emerging by the dozens all over the country. Giving exposure to these SMEs, most of whom cannot afford to attend the large global travel trade events, is a primary objective of the TTM+.

The event also fulfilled another one of its major objectives, viz., to act as a knowledge base to facilitate a better understanding some of the key issues and trends in the global market.

The first knowledgetransfer session was held on the first day, led by Minister Kobkarn on community-based tourism. She was followed by speakers talking on crisis management, culinary tourism and the digital economy.

On the second day, the media were briefed on thematic joint press conference ‘CLMVT: Moving towards Shared Prosperity’, especially the growing potential for overland tourism by representatives from five countries including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand as many new cross-border checkpoints make it easier for cars and vehicles to criss-cross the region.

On the third day, around 600 participants from travel and tourism training institutes and entrepreneurs in Chiang Mai benefitted from a daylong seminar series by TAT execu tives and some of Thailand’s leading private sector executives on market trends.

One of the key highlights of the event was a showcase of indigenous products reflecting the best of Northern Thai culture, arts and heritage.

Superbly designed and elegantly crafted, the exhibits were accompanied in several instances by the artisans offering live demonstrations of their work.

Buyers looking for new venues for MICE events also had a chance to check out the Chiang Mai Exhibition and Convention Centre, which is perfect for small and mediumsized events and trade shows.

Next year, the event will be held in Pattaya on the Eastern Seaboard, bordering Cambodia. That will allow Thai tourism to highlight its transportation connectivity with its neighbour to the East.

I also believe this has been a great preparatory step towards hosting the prestigious ASEAN Tourism Forum, also at the same venue in January 2018.

Emotional case of a Filipino family who tries to save their baby in Thailand

Students from Garden International School have carried out a big beach cleanup in Ban Chang.

The event for the years 7 to 9 students was part of their PSHE lessons, where they are learning more about how to care for their environment.

As well as collecting rubbish, the students looked out for items that could be recycled, and brought these back to school to help with the recycling efforts.

Good drugs – bad drugs Founded in Switzerland in the late nineteenth century, Roche has become one of the world’s leading healthcare companies, employing almost one hundred thousand and producing drugs used in the treatment of cancers, depression, HIV, malaria and epilepsy, to name just a few.

In 1971 it opened its first office in Thailand and each year since then the company has supported local Thai charities, big and small.

This year the Father Ray Foundation was fortunate to be selected to be Roche’s chosen charity and receive all the proceeds from the annual Roche Children’s Charity Walk.

Not only did a large contingent from the company arrive at the Father Ray Foundation, they also organised a wonderful art activity where the children from the Father Ray Center for Children with Special Needs were given a brand-new t-shirt which they then painted.

The managing director together with the executive director presented Father Peter, president of the Father Ray Foundation with a cheque for 470,000 baht.

A few days later more than 150 children and teenagers from the Foundation, as well as

those living in other charitable o r g a n i z a t i o n s , g a t h e re d together at the Father Ray Children’s Home for a three day - two night camp where the main focus and topic of conversation was drugs, the bad ones.

There is a big problem in Thailand with drugs, ya-ba, Ice, methamphetamines, call it what you want, but young people in Thailand are not only taking recreational drugs, they are also becoming addicted.

The aim of the camp was to introduce the children to the dangers of taking drugs, no matter how trendy they may be, or how cheap, or if all your friends are taking them.

Children from the Children’s Home shared tents with the blind students, teenagers with special needs, students from the vocational school and newly made friends from Baan Jing Jai. They listened to experts, watched videos, heard some real life stories and joined in activities to not only be aware of the dangers of illegal drugs, but activities which increase confidence and self esteem, as well as have a lot of fun.

We can only hope that they learned that there is nothing positive or good about taking illegal drugs.

Rejected by every hospital, this young Filipino family had to come in Thailand to seek some help to save their 9-month old baby girl who needs several heart surgeries.

Both parents, originally from Philippines, are currently residing in Thailand where they came to find a treatment for Leanne, their daughter, who was diagnosed trisomy 13 and congenital heart disease.

Masha Zhigunova, regional division manager at Vejthani hospital in Bangkok, set up a fundraiser to support the family.

Me a n w h i l e t h e m u m addressed an open letter to the community : “Leanne is our little princess.

Two months after she was born, doctors said she will only have days and maybe weeks to live. Every time she cries, she will turn purple and then stops breathing which once lead her to have her heart completely stopped. If she has another cardiac arrest she may not survive. So that day, the nurses put the Wonder Woman costume on her.

Today is her 9 months birthday.

Doctors said she might not live to celebrate her first birthday, so we celebrate it every month.

Leanne was diagnosed with trisomy 13 and congenital heart

disease. Her condition was not detected during pregnancy until she reached 3 weeks old. She was moved from NICU, ward, PICU, long term care and ICU, and from one hospital to another, but never been home.

We contacted all the hospitals that could possibly do the surgery for her but unfortunately they all refused because of her trisomy.

Originally from Philippines, our family is permanently residing in the U.A.E but due to finding the proper treatment for Leanne we are currently in Thailand where she has been admitted since the beginning of May. My h u s b a n d s t o p p e d working to focus on taking care of Leanne while I had to go back to work as I have been on leave for more than a year now. Her insurance is running out being in the hospital her whole life and she will still need a series of heart surgeries, a continuous therapy and lifetime medications.”

Our Community Annual Sports Day

In mid June the students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities competed in their school’s annual sports competition.

F o r t h re e d a y s t h e y participated in numerous sports including athletics, volleyball, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, swimming, petanque and table tennis.

At the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games or any major sporting event there is only one 100m race, but in the Paralympics and in competitions for people with disabilities there are many 100m races, all depending on the ability and disability of the

athlete. An athlete with only one leg will not race against another athlete who is using a wheelchair.

For many new students at the school, especially those who were born with a severe disability, it was the first time they had ever participated in a race or as a member of a sports team.

You could see how nervous they were, and yet when the race started and they realised that all the cheers were for them it didn’t really matter who won. Even those who were last to cross the finish line were awarded one point, giving them all a great sense of achievement.

There were many

highlights of the three days, including the four young men, all living with cerebral palsy, who raced for the very first time and could not stop smiling. There was the 18-year-old student who had lost one of his legs at the age of 11, and yet he swims like a fish and won every race he entered.

The young lady who broke the record for javelin throwing, and everyone agreed that the final game of the wheelchair basketball competition was the roughest ever played, and it really was.

The National Games for the Disabled will be taking place in July in the southern province of Songkhla, and the majority of athletes representing Chonburi province will be from the

Pattaya vocational school.

T h e re w i l l b e t e a m s from all 76 provinces of the Kingdom taking part, as well as from Bangkok, and in almost all teams there will be at least one former student from the Pattaya vocational school representing their home province.

The school has a long tradition of producing some of the top athletes in the country who have gone on to represent Thailand at the SEA Games, the Asian Games and also the Paralympic Games, always winning more gold, silver and bronze medals that their nondisabled compatriots.

More than 350 GM Thailand employees and executives participated in tree planting and local fish release activities.

These activities reiterate GM’s continuing commitment towards a sustainable and green environment.

Over the years, GM Thailand has received numerous awards, particularly for its environment, energy and safety management. GM Thailand is the first automotive company in the country to receive the ISO 50001 certification recognizing GM’s commitment to energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in its manufacturing process.

GM Thailand is also certified ISO 14001 representing GM’s best-inclass environment management process. In addition, GM Thailand has been named Energy Star by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It has achieved the “zero landfill” status for its efficient and responsible process

The theme ‘Connecting People to Nature’ for World Environment Day 2017 encouraged GM Thailand to give back to nature and to appreciate its importance.

There were two activities organized by GM Thailand starting on June 4 with ‘Bike to Plant’ activity which employees cycled about 12 kilometers to plant 100 Pink Trumpet trees at Nong Pla Lai reservoir in Rayong.

On June 11, GM Thailand e m p l oye e s a l s o g o t t h e opportunity to plant 1,000 mangrove trees at Pak Nam Pra Sae, Rayong in an effort

to restore the mangrove forest that is important to ecosystem and the environment. The local fishes were also released to the mangrove forest.

GM Thailand’s project has been recognized by the Wildlife Habitat Council for its contribution in environmental conservation.

Mangroves are an important ecosystem on Thailand’s coastal areas, providing environmental and socio-economic benefits.

They also help prevent coastal erosion and habitat degradation, support a healthy ecosystem for wildlife, and provide sustainable resources and livelihoods for the coastal populace.

Swedish National Day Reception in Pattaya

H.E. Staffan Herrström, the ambassador of Sweden, and his spouse, Karin Herrström, hosted a reception at Dusit Thani Pattaya to celebrate the Swedish National Day. National Day of Sweden, formerly known as Swedish Flag Day, is celebrated every year on 6th of June. The main purpose of this holiday is to celebrate Swedish independence in memory of when the Sweden Kingdom was founded.

The al fresco cocktail reception took place at Dusit Thani Pattya’s The Point, poolside venue with a spectacular sunset over the Bay of Siam as a backdrop.

The guest list included Tetra Pak, Volvo, Swedish entrepreneurs, honorary consuls, local Thai business and government people, and international guests.

Ambassador Herrström made a speech about why the Swedish National Day is on June 6, explaining the tradition of celebrating this date began 1916 at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium in honour of the election of King Gustav Vasa in 1523, as this was considered the foundation of modern Sweden.

Herrström also spoke about the relationship between the two kingdoms and said that Sweden fully supports the government’s Thailand 4.0 and Eastern Economic Corridor projects. He said Sweden applauds Thailand transforming into a digital economy. He also mentioned the environment issue like the problem with the ubiquitous plastic bags.

Finally the ambassador expressed how much Swedes enjoy traveling to Thailand, noting that approximately 300,000 Swedes visit Thailand every year, the Eastern Seaboard being one of their favorite destinations. He said the number of Swedish expats is also growing. The retired and the semi-retired escaping the cold, dark and long winters in Sweden.

The Okura Prestige Bangkok organised a cooking competition on the occasion of the hotel’s five-year anniversary and as part of its “Five Years of Success, Five Months of Sharing” project in which a young Thai chef won a nine-day culinary educational trip to the Hotel Okura Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

SILVERLAKE WINE AND GRILL An Evening of Wine, Song and Gourmet Food There surely can’t be anyone living in the area who doesn’t know the architectural phenomenon that is Silverlake. A short drive from Pattaya and you could be holidaying in the Tuscan Hills. Silverlake Vineyard was founded in 2002 by Surachai Tangjaitrong and Supansa Nuangpirom on the principle of bringing people together through the passions of the owners’ love of good wine and good music in a beautifully cultivated garden setting. Immersing themselves in the culture of cultivating grapes and winemaking, Silverlake vineyard bears both wine and table grape varieties and boasts the latest winemaking and juicing technology from Italy to promote Thailand as a new-latitude wine region.

From the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, to chamber music, classic individual maestros to a Beatle tribute band all these unique sounds have wafted across these hills and most recently the highly charismatic Thai-French virtuoso Yves Baron was to give a musical evening to the delight of the assembled guests.

Also known as “Le Tenor”, Yves is a multitalented singer and guitarist who learned to play the classical guitar with maestro Jean-Luc Derhy.

The four-course gourmet dinner is to be orchestrated by the well-known Chef Alberto Bruni.

Silverlake Rose wine was served on the terrace before we were seated in the imposing restaurant.

Pan-seared prawns on a bed of creamed cannellini beans was the appetiser as Yves gave a very spirited rendition of “My Way”.

The sweet, succulent prawns were brilliantly teamed with the gentleness of the Italian beans.

One of our favourite compositions, “Autumn Leaves” was the chosen song as a Sardinian traditional Fregole Risottate with duck ragout and seasonal chanterelle mushrooms were presented. Fregole are spherical pellets from semolina flour, an unusual pasta rarely seen these days.

Chef Alberto is a man of many talents. Before he rushed to the kitchen to replace his toque and start to cook, he found time to sing a duet of “O Sole Mio” with Yves to rapturous applause of the audience.

“Unchained Melody” and “You Are So Beautiful” were the next pieces from Yves’ repertoire sung to the appreciative audience while the main course started to appear from the kitchen. The two options were Australian 150-day G.F. ribeye and oven-baked red snapper.

In the interest of this review we ordered one of each to give our appraisal. The red snapper was a big piece of this popular fish cooked to perfection with a crisp, wellcoloured skin and the flesh fell in shards under the fork. Accompanied by pumpkin mash and sauté spinach it was an excellent dish. Mick’s ribeye was a full-sized tranche of topnotch beef accompanied by roasted potatoes and a selection of grilled vegetables. Yves complemented these two plates of fine fare with his performance of “Besame Mucho”

Cheese was the concluding course to the dinner and what cheese it was; the like never seen before at any dinner we have been to. Chef Alberto is a cheese connoisseur and his knowledge of Italian cheeses is legendary. We were served a pecorino with Chianti, a soft Parmesan, and many other artisanal cheeses which we couldn’t identify.

Sufficient to say they were extremely distinctive and a rare treat.

Silverlake Wine and Grill is such an extraordinary location and the events that are staged here singular in the extreme. Do check their website for more musical evenings.

This edition’s article is a culinary step back in time. Remember gathering around the table scattered with foil containers and tucking into a Chinese takeaway that someone had wandered down the road to collect (they didn’t deliver in those days). All those sweet-andsour pork balls, the spare ribs, the big fat spring rolls bursting with bean sprouts, ah, nostalgia at its best! Surprisingly, do you know who was the main bell weather in popularizing Chinese food – Billy Butlin! He introduced Chinese restaurants at his holiday camps and his happy campers loved the novelty as much, they went home boasting to their friends, who then wanted to try it, too. It might all have come with chips but hey ho that was how it was in those days.

Why am I rambling on? Well, Wok N Rok, formerly of Soi Buakhao have moved to the Corner House, Rompho Market on Jomtien Second Road.

Within the hour you will be transported back to those gentler times when a bowl of chicken chow mein was the height in culinary sophistication and duck in green pepper and black bean sauce the pinnacle of exotic eating.

We ordered the aromatic crispy duck (1/4) with seven pancakes (B.235). If you have a larger party the ½ size is B.395 with 14 pancakes.

Delivery is B.45 in most areas but Mick went down to collect our order as it’s not far from where we live, everything was packaged well and the duck arrived with its crunchy skin on the crackling side.

Lots of chopped spring onions and cucumber plus a big container of the requisite hoisin sauce. No

complaints from us, we smeared the pancakes with the sweet plum sauce, stuffed them with crunchy duck and the cool veggies and they were disappearing at a rapid rate.

We followed this with a chicken chow mien which is a meal in itself.

Oodles of noodles tossed with bean sprouts and veggies and masses of chicken.

There’s a set meal (for two) at B.550 which includes that overgreen chicken sweetcorn soup, spare ribs in BBQ sauce, special curry or chicken with black beans, sweetand-sour chicken balls or roast pork and mushrooms plus a two-egg fried rice. Now wouldn’t that hit the spot for walk?

The rest of the menu is as evocative; all your remembered favourites are here. Sweet-and-sour king prawns (tick), beef in black pepper (tick), chicken and cashew nuts (tick), roast pork with ginger and sweet onions (tick) and beef chop suey. All dishes are in the B.160/175 range, plus there’s lots more—even chips with curry sauce.

METHOD Blend yogurt, 50 grams of durian, lemon juice, salt and pepper together.

Cut each of the apples into ¼-inch large cubes.

Slice the strawberry into rings.

Peel the mangosteen and separate the meat into segments.

Slice the remaining durian, dip into milk, and coat with bread crumbs.

Insert a wooden skewer into each prawn to keep it straight. Dip into tempura batter.

Deep-fry the durian and the prawn tempura until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Remove the wooden skewers from the prawns.

Mix lettuce, baby spinach, strawberry, diced apple, shredded celery, radish and sprinkle with crispy durian and edible flowers. Add the fried durian and tempura prawns.

Serve with durian yogurt dressing.

Understanding Laser Hair Removal When laser hair removal was first introduced, the procedure was limited to those with light skin and dark hair.

Dark-skinned individuals could not use these lasers for hair removal because early generation lasers were unable to distinguish between skin pigment and hair follicles, which led to the burning of those with darker skin. Today this

• Tweezers, shaving, waxing, and creams usually make your unwanted hair return within a few days.

• Electrolysis is too painstaking as it treats one hair follicle at a time. Compared to electrolysis, laser hair removal typically requires fewer treatment sessions, less time per session, and minimal discomfort.

• Oral medications have also successfully treated unwanted hair. But oral medications may not be appropriate for everyone.

Laser treatment can remove hair from almost all areas of the body, including the face, upper lip, bikini line, and neck area.

How does hair growth affect laser hair removal treatments?

Every hair goes through three cycles of growth. The hair you can see is either in its active anagen growth cycle (still attached to the hair follicle) or in its inactive catagen phase (already separated from the follicle).

Inactive hair will fall out on its own as it has completed its growth cycle and is already disengaged from the follicle. Beneath the surface of the skin are the dormant hair follicles that have not entered a growth cycle.

The laser targets the hair you can see, meaning it will remove both the active and inactive hairs. Hair in an active growth cycle will not grow back as the laser will destroy the hair follicle beneath the skin. Inactive hair will be removed, however, it will grow back because the follicle is still intact. As the hair moves through its cycles, repeated sessions are necessary to treat the follicles when they enter the growth phase.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated, skin color, coarseness of hair, and gender.

Since hair grows in several phases, and laser can only affect the actively growing follicles, several sessions are needed to kill hair in all phases of growth.

In general, it is necessary to foresee between three and eight treatment sessions.

Coarse dark hair on light skin is easiest to treat. Finer hair and hair on darker skin may require more treatments.

Certain areas (notably men’s and women’s faces) may require considerably more treatments to achieve desired results.

What is the interval between each session?

Usually, treatments are spaced three to 12 weeks apart to start, although the spacing depends upon each individual’s response to treatment. Instead of following an arbitrary schedule, you should wait until you have experienced shedding of the treated hairs, which should take less than a month, and see enough hair come in after the hair-free period to have another treatment. Treatment spacing also depends on the area treated as hair cycles vary based on the body part.

What to expect during the laser hair removal procedure During the procedure, laser light will be delivered through a handheld piece attached to a laser console.

Laser treatment itself may cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. But because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others,

Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient manuscript said to contain lists of many different groupings of asanas, as well as highly original teachings on vinyasa, drishti, bandhas, mudras, and philosophy. The text of the Yoga Korunta was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900s by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927.

Since 1948, Pattabhi Jois has been teaching Ashtanga yoga from his yoga shala, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, according to the sacred tradition of Guru Parampara.

Ashtanga yoga literally means “eight-limbed yoga,” as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices: Yama: moral codes Niyama: self-purification and study Asana: posture Pranayama: breath control Pratyahara: sense control Dharana: concentration Dhyana: meditation Samadhi: absorption into the Universal Posture: The method for purifying and strengthening the body is called asana. In Ashtanga yoga, asana is grouped into six series. The Primary Series detoxifies and aligns the body. The Intermediate Series purifies the nervous system by opening and clearing the energy channels. The Advanced Series A, B, C, and D integrate the strength and grace of the practice, requiring higher levels of flexibility and humility. Each level is to be fully developed before proceeding to the next, and the sequential order of asanas is to be meticulously followed. Each posture is a preparation for the next, developing the strength and balance required to move further. Without an earnest effort and reverence towards the practice of yama and niyama, however, the practice of asana is of little benefit.

Breathing: The breathing technique performed with vinyasa is called ujjayi, which consists of puraka and rechaka. Both the inhale and exhale should be steady and even, the length of the inhale should be the same length as the exhale. Over time, the length and intensity of the inhalation and exhalation should increase, such that the increased stretching of the breath initiates the increased stretching of the body. Long, even breathing also increases the internal fire and strengthens and purifies the nervous system.

I take the delicious butter mini croissants, en chocolate. The mini croissant is the new croissant! I savored seven (units) with strong Vietnamese coffee enough to wash a baby elephant. This is not the le petit déjeuner – this is the MGallery “Grand” le petit déjeuner!

Then a late morning postprandial Saigon walk. Off to the War Remnants Museum along tree-lined boulevards. Until you’ll see the dark green US Army M48 tanks, USAF Huey choppers, old fighter jets and heavy, long artillery pieces sitting in front of the museum building.

Inside more military hardware; hand grenades, ammunition, pistols, rusty AK-47s and helmets. Also 500 graphic images depicting the horrors of modern warfare. A visit is recommended and you’ll understand why the Vietnamese called this armed conflict from 1955 to 1975 the “American War” not the “Vietnam War!” On the way back to our hotel we pass the Reunification Palace. The famous site of the “Fall of Saigon” April 30, 1975, when a North Vietnamese “Viet Cong” (Russian made) T-54 Army tank bulldozed through the main iron gate.

Nearby is the Dong Khoi Street which the French settlers called Rue Catinat. Running from Notre Dame

Cathedral to the Saigon River. The heart of the old Saigon “the Paris of the East.” Now prime real estate with air-conditioned commercial centers like Vincom Center HCMC’s largest shopping mall with over 250 shops boasting global fashion houses such as American Ralph Lauren, German Hugo Boss and French Hermès. And of course, Louis Vuitton Dong Khoi occupying the super-prime location in the Opera View Building.

I leave Madame shopping and return to Hotel des Arts Saigon, MGallery Collection on the 9th floor.

Time to soak my limbs in a Lanvin “Orange Ambre” hot foam bath by the panorama window. And of course, Nespresso coffee shots and Perrier water from the minibar. Joie de Vivre.

My first meeting with Neoh Kean Boon is at the reception of the Swedish National Day “Sveriges Dag” a formal event which for at least 15 years has always been at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, Grand Ball Room. Year after year. “Same procedure as every year”.

The Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) has been in real estate for more than 24 years, prior to which she was in the corporate arena with several Fortune 500 Nancy Suvarnamani companies. After 15 years of corporate life, she decided to make a change and chose real estate as the catalyst to create an award-winning, highly-successful real estate firm on Michigan Avenue in Chicago's South Loop.

Nancy was inducted into the Chicago Association of Realtors Hall of Fame in 2016.

Paul Xumsai, CIPS, is the NAR president's liaison to Thailand. As such, he is the key link to associated real estate groups in Thailand.

Consumer Protection in Thailand The Consumer Protection Act, B.E. 2522 (1979) with the first amendment of this Act, B.E. 2541 (1998) provides the consumer rights as follows: 1. The right to receive correct and sufficient information and descriptions as to the quality of goods and services Consumers have the right to receive information from advertising or labels which is not exaggerated by the business entity, including the right to be informed about sufficient details of goods or services in order to avoid misunderstanding in buying those goods or services.

2. The right to enjoy freedom in the choice of goods or services This means that a consumer can willingly buy goods or service and independently make a decision without any unfair persuasion.

3. The right to safety in the use of goods or services Any goods or services used by a consumer must be in a good condition and quality with the appropriate standard so that there is no harm to the life, body or property of consumers when used according to the instructions and according to the condition of the goods and services.

4. The right to receive a fair contract This is the right to have a fair contract from a business entity. All of the following terms are considered unfair to a consumer, for example, a credit card agreement which has terms, such as a term which allows changes in conditions of the card usage fee, service charge, accrued interest without prior notice, a term which allows a business entity to abolish the contract on credit card usage at any time without any notice to the consumer of reason, and no term which indicates the right of the consumer to cancel a contract.

5. The right to be considered and compensated The consumer has the right to call for compensation from a business entity if the consumer suffers damage caused by the

business entity. The consumer can make a complaint for help and support at the Office of the Consumer Protection Board or relevant agencies.

Consumer Protection in Advertising The Consumer Protection Act mentions that an advertisement of goods and services must not contain a statement which is unfair to consumers and it shall not be affected by a method which may be harmful to health, or cause physical or mental harm or annoyance to consumers.

The following statements shall be regarded as those which violate this Act: 1. A statement which is false or exaggerated.

2. A statement which will cause misunderstanding about the goods or services.

3. A statement which is directly or indirectly encouraging the commission of an unlawful or immoral act, or which adversely affects the national culture.

4. A statement which will cause disunity or adversely affects the unity among the public.

5.

Other statements as prescribed by the Ministerial Regulation as follows: • Advertising of goods or services for which a business entity has a sale and promotion by giving products for free or privileges, gambling or competing for prize rewards must be contained with clear statements, such as regulations, conditions, methods, starting and ending dates, detail of free products, value of free products in total, and any place where consumers receive the free products.

• Advertising by blessing

members of the Royal Family and using information about the Monarch must not include details of goods or services in the advertisement. The statement of blessing must be clear without any advertising of goods and services.

Trademarks or other details, such as address, website, email, address, telephone numbers, are not allowed.

Only the name of the company or the composer is allowed.

• Advertising of land, house and condominium by a business entity must contain details, including starting and finishing dates of construction, registered number of land certificates, total area of land, license number of land allocation, name of person who allocates the land, name of land business entity. The time of transferring ownership when the payment has been made according to the conditions of the contract, must also be indicated. A statement must indicate whether any image in the advertisement is real, or is imitated from the original.

In the case where the Committee on Advertisement had a reasonable cause to suspect that any statement used in an advertisement is false or exaggerated, the Committee on Advertisement shall have the power to issue an order requiring the advertiser to substantiate the claim.

Any businessman who is doubtful whether his advertisement will violate or does not conform to this Act may apply to the Committee on Advertisement for consideration and opinion on such matter before advertising.

Stefan Molnar is responsible for all sales and marketing initiatives for the Lufthansa Group Airlines, namely Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa German Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines, in Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos since mid-May this year. He succeeds Dirk Grossmann who was in this position for the last six years and he is now the general manager Sales in Moscow.

Lufthansa is also reintroducing its first class product to Bangkok that comes with the A380 to the customers in Thailand. Eurowings is also operating Phuket/Cologne route twice weekly again in the winter schedule.

Mazda maintains strong momentum May sales rise by 13 percent Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd. announced that Mazda sales in May reached almost 4,000 units, growing by 13 per cent compared to the same month last year, with the Mazda2 achieving significant growth of 32 per cent.

The sales growth follows Mazda’s efforts in strengthening its sales and after-sales capability, resulting in greater customer confidence. Year-to-date sales (Jan-May) reached 19,729 units, rising by 10 per cent compared the corresponding period last year, thanks to strong tourism and agriculture sectors.

Chanchai Trakarnudomsuk, president of Mazda Sales said although May was affected by the monsoon rains, the economic has been promising. “The agriculture sector is really active with the ‘Durian Fever’ which has become a highly popular business. Meanwhile rice, rubber and tapioca is also making strong comebacks. All these positive factors result in higher purchasing power and that helps stimulate the automobile market,” he said.

In May, Mazda sold 3,964 units, an increase of 13 per cent compared to 3,522 vehicles sold during the same month last year. The Mazda2 was the top-selling model with 2,490 units (32 per cent growth), followed by the Mazda3 with 466 units (38 per cent growth), CX-3 crossover with 351 units (17 per cent decline), BT-50 PRO pickup with 349 units (32 per cent decline), CX-5 crossover with 304 units (14 per cent decline) and MX-5 roadster with four units.

During the first five months of the year, Mazda secured sales of 19,729 units, growing by 10 per cent compared to 17,869 units sold during the same period in 2016. The Mazda2 was also the best-seller with 11,732 units (23 per cent growth), followed by the BT-50 PRO with 2,595 units (1 per cent growth), Mazda3 with 2,269

units (21 per cent growth), CX-3 with 1,748 units (30 per cent decline), CX-5 with 1,376 units (2 per cent growth) and MX-5 with 9 units.

Chanchai added that growing Mazda sales reflects the confidence customers have in the Mazda brand. “Whether it’s because of the new technologies such as SkyactivVehicle Dynamics that come with G-Vectoring Control (GVC), or the latest safety and infotainment systems, customers are embracing the Mazda brand more than ever. Mazda is confident that our hard work in developing new and exciting products answers to customers in every segment, and the popularity of Mazda vehicles is growing continuously. We are also modernizing Mazda showrooms and service centers around the country to meet the latest global standards.”

Chris Wailes has been working for Volvo Cars for 28 years. He first joined Volvo in 1989 as a car sales executive within a UK Volvo dealership and rapidly became dealer principle before joining Volvo Cars UK from 2001 to 2007 as a regional dealer performance manager. He was responsible for the leadership and performance management of 20 dealerships.

From 2008 to 2012, he was UK and European Product and Pricing Manager for Volvo Car Corporation for the delivery of product and offer propositions across all car segments to develop new volume channels and improve performance of 78 percent in just one year.

In 2012, as a market manager, he launched the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid car, working hands on with various European markets to establish the product offer, the product positioning and also commercial and technical training.

This resulted in the first year’s production volume being sold out prior to the first car being built.

In 2013, Wailes was promoted

to Global Product and Carline Performance Director for Volvo Car Group based in GothenburgSweden, responsible for Global carline performance on a country level and for global product from new model launch to lifecycle management as well as being involved with various product launches.

In 2015, Wailes was appointed as market area director for Asia Pacific based in Shanghai. He was responsible for all commercial country operations and set up new businesses in Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia and Sri Lanka and two years operational performance growth in existing markets in excess of 20 percent per annum.

In his latest position as a market area director for region APeC he had a full scope business responsibility for his markets. Chris’ background is a great asset in his new role.

“I have worked in Thailand many times which gives me an understanding of the local automobile market. This is obviously a very challenging and

Thailand Mega Fam Trip marks 130 years of Thai-Japanese relations As part of the celebrations to mark the 130th anniversary of Thailand-Japan diplomatic relations, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Thai Airways International (THAI) jointly organised a ‘Thailand Mega FAM Trip’ for 130 leading travel and media representatives from Japan to enjoy unique Thai local experiences in Bangkok, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, and Kanchanaburi.

Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT governor said, “Thailand and Japan have enjoyed strong diplomatic relations for over a century. Also, Japan is one of Thailand’s top markets, contributing 1.43 million tourists last year. This fam trip will help deepen the understanding of our country through a speciallydesigned itinerary that highlights

beautiful scenery, as well as cultural and historical sites of Thailand.”

The Thailand Mega Fam Trip took place last month. Of the total 130 participants, 60 are from travel agencies and the remaining are from print and online media companies as well as public relations agencies.

All participants had the chance to visit various important historical sites in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya where over a 1,000 Japanese once lived in a dedicated Japanese settlement over 600 years ago. The village is now one of Ayutthaya’s most-visited attractions by Japanese tourists. Other historical attractions included in the itinerary are Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mahathat and Wat Chaiwattanaram.

Following a meaningful day in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya,

Also, TAT has recently appointed Nogizaga 46 – a famous idol girl group in Japan, as a Thailand tourism brand ambassador to promote Thai tourism to the Japanese market.

In 2017, TAT expect to generate tourism income of around 65.37 billion baht from 1.5 million Japanese travellers to the country.

Youth Focus IB students celebrate at Hilton

by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona IB students from Garden International School (GIS) have celebrated the end of their examinations – and the end of school – with a special evening at a five-star hotel.

GIS’ IB students have now finished their examinations for the International Baccalaureate Diploma – the world’s leading qualification for 16 to18 year olds.

This year’s IB Formal evening was held on May 27 at the Hilton Pattaya. Students arrived dressed in their finest suits and gowns and enjoyed an international/Thai buffet.

Speeches were made by GIS Principal Hawtree, IB Coordinator Beales and the IB Form Tutors, Carr and Berry.

Berry is the first teacher in the history of GIS to take a tutor group all the way through secondary, from year 7 to year 13.

After some great final performances from the talented students, all the IB students made short speeches, thanking their parents and teachers at GIS. The evening ended with the traditional throwing of mortarboards.

This & That Rethinking Churchill and the Lusitania

Popular Conspiracy Theories On May 7 1915, a German submarine U20 fired one torpedo at the British merchant ship the Lusitania off the coast of southern Ireland and sent her to the bottom in 20 minutes. Amazing as it may appear, some writers actually believe that the sinking was arranged or prompted by the British first lord of the admiralty, none other than Winston Churchill.

What we know for sure is that Churchill was warlike. In July 1914, before the outbreak

of the first world war, he mobilized the British home fleet, the greatest assembly of naval power in the history of the world up to that time. He never even brought his order to the attention of the British Cabinet, although prime minister Asquith did give his approval.

Once hostilities with Germany were declared, Churchill was thus instrumental in establishing the hunger blockade of German ports which caused around 750,000

people to die of hunger and associated diseases. In terms of efficiency, the blockade was probably the most effective weapon employed on either side in the whole conflict. In terms of international law and convention, it was likely illegal too.

Nobody can prove, although several conspiracy theorists have tried, that Churchill arranged for the sinking of the Lusitania. A week before the disaster he wrote to Walter Runciman, president of the board of trade, that it was “most important to attract neutral shipping to our shores, in the hopes especially of embroiling the United States with Germany.” Many highly placed persons in Britain and America certainly believed that the German sinking of the Lusitania would bring America into the war. Over 100 Americans, many of them influential, died in the disaster.

Thus Patrick Beesly, in his book Room 40 which is a history of British naval intelligence in world war one, points out that the British admiralty was aware that German U-boat Command had informed U-boat captains at sea of the sailing dates of the Lusitania. Moreover the U20 which was present in the vicinity of Queenstown in the path of the Lusitania had

recently sunk two other ships in the Atlantic.

There is no surviving record of any specific warning to the Lusitania from London. She was not even advised to zigzag as a precaution. No destroyer escort was sent to accompany the ship to port, nor were any of the readily available destroyers instructed to hunt for the submarine. In fact, no effective steps were taken to protect the Lusitania. The author Beesly concludes, “Unless and until fresh information comes to light, I am reluctantly driven to the conclusion that there was a conspiracy to put the Lusitania at risk in the hope that an abortive attack would bring the United States into the war.”

What cannot be denied is that Churchill’s policies made the sinking quite likely. The Lusitania was a passenger ship loaded with the munitions of war, especially shell casings and ammunition. Churchill had given orders to the captains of merchant ships, including liners, to ram German submarines if they encountered them. The Germans were well aware of this fact and of Churchill’s stated policy objective to get neutral nations embroiled in the conflict.

In the midst of this bloody conflict Churchill was most certainly dedicated. Sometimes his hunches worked out well,

for instance the introduction of tanks on to western front battlefields. At other times, he was very wrong indeed, as instanced by his belief that the Turks could be driven out of Gallipoli to facilitate an allied march on the Turkish capital of Constantinople. The Turkish fiasco caused Churchill to be dropped from the British Cabinet, but his reaction was typical. Pointing to maps on the wall he said, “This is what I live for. I care only for the waging of war, the defeat of Germany.”

It is, of course, possible that Churchill did not after all have a secret hand in the sinking of the Lusitania. He could not be sure America would enter the war as a result, and indeed she did not do so formally until two years later. To believe that Churchill deliberately sent over a thousand souls to their deaths in the cold waters of

the Atlantic, including many women and children, requires a very strong stomach or a strong dose of cynicism. Nor could anyone know that the huge liner would sink in just 20 minutes. It appears that the torpedo caused a secondary explosion in the engine rooms which tore another great hole in the liner’s hull. Moreover, it is certainly possible that the admiralty underestimated the danger from submarines which were primitive devices in the first world war.

The Lusitania was a blueribbon holder for the fastest Atlantic crossing and it may have been assumed that she could simply outrun any submarine trying to track her.

Perhaps the U20 simply had a lucky hit on a fast moving ship. Or maybe Churchill planned the whole thing. You pay your money and you take your pick.

Local Sports Healthy and invigorating – Yacht racing for all Ocean Marina Yacht Club held its monthly racing in perfect conditions. What more can you want other than healthy sunshine and a strong breeze? This super green sport relies only on the wind and sails to provide exhilarating sport for the crew. Unlike the America’s Cup, you do not need to be a super fit athlete to compete. A whole range of ages and personalities turned out for what was a very successful weekend sport, enjoyed by all.

Three boats ran in the sports boat class and three in the cruising class. Saturday was a testing day for the sports boats because the organisers set four windward leeward

courses which gave crews very little rest. A prestart routine provides five minutes of jostling for position to get the best start possible. This is usually a very noisy and exciting close quarters dance which can be very stressful for the owners of the boats as crews race by each other with only inches to spare. Then at the gun, away they race looking for the strongest wind and the quickest route to the top mark. Rounding this mark then has crews raising their big, downwind, spinnaker sails which are mostly brightly coloured and provide great shots for any photographers.

The next mark is the leeward mark when spinnakers have

to be dropped and boats again head back to the top mark directly upwind. Then another spinnaker set and race back to the finish for a well-earned rest. After 10 minutes and some much needed water to rehydrate, it all happens again.

With short distance races, crews have very little time to rest as the rounding marks come up thick and fast.

Great to see Nathan, Espen, Doug and Richard on board Wikki being pushed hard by the new team of Thomas, Lucy, Cecile, Keith and Dave, on board Stingray, an identical boat. While Dave, Allen, Peter, Chris, Kev and Stephanie did their best to match these flying machines with their bigger, but less manoeuvrable yacht, Magic.

The cruising boats were set longer courses to provide a bit more relaxed racing and even give crew time to enjoy the great scenery and “joie de vivre” that goes with this sport. Racing is nevertheless ultra competitive as every second counts. In two of the day's races, Dan on Tribe and Martin on Nautical Wheeler

finished within one, and then two, seconds of each other. How close is that?

Making up the fleet was Jon on Mirabooka. Now Jon might not have the fastest boat around the course but if smiling and having a great time scored points Jon would win hands down every time.

And so, after a hard day on the water, crews returned to the marina and then to the beautiful surroundings of the garden restaurant to swop their tales and excuses over a welcome cold beer.

Results were quickly distributed, with the usual cheerful banter associated with this great sport.

of people who have the ability to fight hard on the water but respect and enjoy each other’s company away from it.

After a night’s rest it all started again on Sunday although the organiser’s took pity on some tired-looking crew members and set slightly less stressful races. This did not lessen the intense, competitive spirit, however, and once again crews were able to relax and

enjoy a much-needed cold beer after two very satisfying days’ competitive sport.

Congratulations to team Wikki and team Nautical Wheeler on their welldeserved ‘first in class’ awards.

Thanks to Ocean Marina Yacht Club for providing all the on water support needed to run such an event, and all in such magnificent surroundings.

Cruising Class

Stuvik on the podium in Suzuka! Alex leaves The third round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the legendary Suzuka Circuit in Japan. Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik would have a new teammate this weekend in Nicolas Costa, a Brazilian racing driver and last year's Italian Super GT Champion.

During Friday's free practice sessions, Sandy and his teammate familiarized themselves with the famous Suzuka circuit. It would also be VS Racing's first time at the circuit, so the challenge for Sandy would be to set the car up without any previous experience of the Suzuka circuit, and no reference data to rely on.

The VSR Lamborghini Huracan GT3 proved to be a difficult beast to tame in the dry, as the pace seemed to be quite far off the front-runners.

Qualifying took place on Saturday morning and the overnight changes made to the

car had a decidedly beneficial effect, as Sandy in Qualifying 1 managed to get 4th position for Race 1. Sandy's teammate Costa qualified in 14th position for Race 2.

Race 1 took place on Saturday afternoon and Sandy got off to a decent start and managed to maintain his position. A few laps into the race, the Thai driver made a mistake on the exit of the infamous 'Spoon' corner and lost a position to the Mercedes AMG GT3 following close behind. The Thai driver handed over to his Brazilian teammate during the pit window, and the pair would finish the race in 8th position overall, 5th in Silver class. "It was a difficult race, I found it difficult to keep up the pace with the cars around me. We have some work to do if we are to fight with the other cars in the dry conditions. Let's hope for better tomorrow,' Sandy said.

Race 2 on Sunday morning took place with a light drizzle. The VSR duo would start from 14th on the grid, and the opening stint by Costa saw him making up valuable positions in the slippery and difficult conditions, eventually handing the car over to Sandy in 7th position.

Sandy stormed out of the pits, eager to make the best of the difficult conditions.

The Thai driver quickly gained positions, feeling confident on the wet with his Lamborghini. He fought his way up the 2nd position overall, and leading the Silver class. It would stay that way until the finish flag came out,

meaning would claim his first podium in GTs. 'It's such a great feeling to finally get a podium in GTs, its been a long time coming and to do it here in Suzuka is even more special. Especially as we were looking so strong in Buriram, it's nice to have it confirmed.

KhaoKheow It was 20 golfers that gathered at The Swan, all eager to head out and take on the challenge of KhaoKheow.

There had been some rain about but it was obvious that the course had had more than its fair share. No carts on course!

We attacked A and C from the white tees, (our two ladies from The Red). Course was in good nick with the greens playing a little slow. Weather was a bit on the hot side and a few of our golfers struggled with the heat as such.

Twenty golfers gave us two flights with the divide being 0 to 18 and then 19 plus.

A flight saw Alex Field show a clean pair of heels returning an excellent score of 43 points, second went to John Edwards with Mashi taking out third.

Second div or B flight went to Ronny Gillett, he returned 33 points with Niall Stuart taking second place with John Anderson coming in third proving a very popular threesome!

NTP’S Most of the group took advantage of the 2nd – Mashi “free” vouchers which were sitting on the check8th - Paul Smith 12th - Rona in desk counter. Some players who had already 17th – D-For paid the full price (unaware of the vouchers) rushed back in from the practice putting green and claimed their refund!

LFP’s These vouchers presented an unbelievable 9th - Patrick Poussiers price of 350 baht for green fees, caddie and cart 18th - Paul Hack and created an absolute buzz of excited chatter in the locker rooms and out on the course! That was D-FOR the charity dog was passed around until word floated about, some hours later, that by Alex Field and all players and patrons of the in fact the vouchers had to be paid for. Despite Growling Swan are once again thanked for their this, it was still great value at 1,050 baht for all kindness in donating to this worthy cause, which benefits those far less fortunate in and around of the above mentioned.

Bunker Boys Golf Khao Kheow (yellow tees) An excellent day for golf with a slight breeze and the Khao Kheow course in excellent condition. Playing the C course first followed by the A course. The first hole on C course, the long par 5 is always a severe test especially today for Skinny Newton who managed to put four balls into the water by the time he had reached his playing partner's drives. Still Skinny always perseveres and he completed the 18 holes still smiling, although he lost all three sixes and his bag was 10 balls lighter. The tee was so far back that a drive just past the red tees was considered a good drive. It was good to welcome Nial Glover back and have Takeshi Hakozaki for once forsaking Crystal Bay to join us. It was a good move for him as he took first place beating the ever reliable Geoff Parker. There was a three way count back on 33pts for the other places.

However there was more fun back at the M Club as Richard Baldotto with encouragement from the staff regaled us with intimate details of how he should have won if he hadn’t wiped the last four holes and remained on 31 points from hole 14 onwards. The problem poor

They finally rejoined the rest but were now the last flight to tee off. Weather was good and the course in very good condition. It turned out to be a close contest amongst our low markers with Robby Watts (7), Colin Greig (9) and Les Cobban fighting out for the places. In the end

by Dick Warberg Royal Lakeside - St Life is good at Tropical Golf, and just to prove it we treated ourselves to a trip out to Royal Lakeside. A little longer of a drive, but freeway close, and it took on average an hour and ten minutes for everyone to arrive, and that included one wrong turn. So with sunny skies and a nice course waiting, a lucky thirteen golfers met at the tee to swing away.

Royal Lakeside is a scoring course. Wide fairways in good condition make sure you usually have a good lie, and that counts for a lot. Don't take the course for granted though, as there is plenty of water to gobble up errant shots, and some of the bunkers are real tough to get out of.

Therein lies RL's strategy – luring you into complacency.

To prove it, the scores had a high dispersion. At the top the scores were very good, and even with four places, if you didn't have a “4” at the first part of your Stableford score, your job was to sit and applaud those that did.

At the top of the scoring heap Bob Britton (c/h 18), who drove in from Nakhon Nayok just to dominate the rest of the field, earning an amazing 43 points and winning on count-back! Very well done, Bob. It wasn't all that easy though as his score was matched by Daryl Evans (28). Wow, some golfers out there really took advantage.

Following Daryl was Brian “Mr. Consistent” Parish (14) who seems to earn 41 points each time we play now. How can 40 points possibly earn last place on the honor roll?

by Dick Warberg A Tropical golfers salute to you all. Time for the PSC Tropical golfers to head out to Crystal Bay. Most golfers like a visit there once in a while to help build the ego up and the handicap down. Overall in good condition, Crystal Bay attracted 17 golfers this Friday, including one who came straight from the airport to join us.

Dedication! We had a later than usual start, and there was some concern that might force us to deal with the frequent afternoon showers we've had lately, but this day stayed clear.

We were assigned the B and C courses (in that order for once) and we got off on time or a bit early. Crystal Bay is in good condition, and seems to be undergoing some maintenance as several work crews were busy around the course. CB could also be called “Stumpland” as there are quite a few headless palm trees around the course. Yet one work crew working on the course was busily chopping down a healthy one. There must be reasons. Crystal Bay is a scoring course, and see how one for sure took extreme advantage.

A-Flight (0-17): Recently returned Mashi Kaneta (c/h 17) smashed, destroyed, and intimidated all competition with a stratospheric 44 points! Do you give lessons, Mashi? Next in Colin prevailed to beat Les Cobban by one point and Sean Murphy managed to sneak past Robby into third. As per Monday Poor Richard Baldotto lost his swing again except for one par 3. A very enjoyable days golf on an excellent course.

Heat’s even worse—and more dangerous—for pets Hot weather is a pet hazard all year round here in Pattaya. And it’s been particularly problematic over the last month or so. Pets with heavy or dark-colored coats and older pets suffer more than most, as do snub-nosed dogs.

What to do? Limit exercise to brief periods and only in the shade—including dog walking—and always have cool water available.

Heat stroke is the biggest risk, literally causing blood-curdling, organ-damaging disease—often in just a few minutes’ time. Symptoms include excessively loud panting followed by collapse. Treat immediately with water (not cold water), wetting your pet’s tongue, ears and extremities first before wetting the whole pet. Then drive in your air-conditioned car to the nearest animal hospital.

But heat stroke is not the only danger. Burnt paw pads and sunburn are similarly threatening. If the soles of your feet burn when you walk on the beach, asphalt

Your patio, walkway, and driveway can reach blistering temperatures. Also keep in mind that pale pets with thin fur are susceptible to sunburn and solar-related skin cancer—especially in the tropics (use sunscreen or even a t-shirt).

Keep pets indoors in air-conditioned areas as much as possible, particularly at midday. And never leave any animal in a parked vehicle.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well-being

These lovely kittens have just been rescued from our local temple along with their mum Lucy. The little ones are now about 6 weeks old so by the time you read this article, they can go to new homes: there are one girl and two boys.

This lovely mum was rescued from our local temple after someone dumped her and her babies there. She is still feeding her kittens at the moment but, in a few weeks’ time, we will get her neutered ready to go to a new home.

Buzz

This happy fellow was born on Christmas day so he is nearly 6 months old now. It is always harder to find homes for bigger kittens but, as you can see, he is a typical naughty boy. On this occasion we found him in a waste paper bin, but it's is not unusual to find him asleep even in the sink.

Dog Bites If another dog—particularly a stray—bites your pet, get it to a vet or animal clinic as soon as possible. Dog bites can deposit a lot of hair, debris and bacteria into the wound. If it’s not cleaned out and treated quickly, the wound can become infected. Even worse, the other dog may have rabies.

To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring—it was peace.

These two lovely friendly sisters have been with us for a few years now and sadly, because they are a little shy of strangers at first, no one has chosen them. It would be lovely for them to go to a new home together as they are happy to be indoor pets if needed.

Please give them a chance and a happy new home.

Hairy Wary If you’ve come to the conclusion that cat hair is not the ultimate accessory—except on a cat—get yourself a good vacuum cleaner with strong suction. All the better if you can find one with a pet-hair attachment (good luck with that).

Vacuum floors, chairs, curtains and your cat’s favorite perches. Rub the sticky side of tape over your clothes. Buy pet bedding that’s easy to clean.

And if your kitty goes outside, place a washable cushion where she goes in and out to catch muddy paws.

It also helps to brush your cat every day, or at least once a week.
