Elite card VISA EXPANDS
T
hailand Privilege Card plc (TPC), operator of Thailand Elite Card, expects to generate revenues of 400 million baht this year--up 40 percent over 2016. The agency has introduced several changes in recent months hoping to put new life into the flagging enterprise created 11 years ago by thenpremier Thaksin Shinawatra. The concept was designed to provide foreigners with a longterm and multiple-entry visa
in return for an initial cash fee. Henley and Partners Holdings, with 28 offices worldwide, has been named international sales agents. Some 4,500 Elite Cars have been sold so far to Britons, Americans, Russians, Chinese and several other nationalities. The fee varies from 500,000 baht to 2 million baht depending on the buyer’s desired length of stay. While membership precludes the need to make visa runs or enforced trips abroad, foreigners
nevertheless must report to their local Immigration Office every 90 days. The elite card, open to all who can afford it, is particularly advantageous for individuals who might not otherwise qualify for a one-year visa— such as those under 50 years of age, and farang on work, student or marriage visas. Holders also benefit from discounts and privileges on a wide range of services including golfing, wellness-
spas, restaurants, hotels and medical services at some hospitals. A n d n ow , e l i t e c a rd categories have now been expanded to include the Elite Family Premium--a supplementary card for near relatives of the holder. A wife may join her husband, who is already a full member, by paying a further one million baht to cover the entire 20-year program. Continued on page 4

News The Progress of Waterfront Condominium Pattaya Project
Chalermwat Wimuktayon, the CEO of Magna Carta Co., Ltd., and chairman of the Lawyers Council of Pattaya, revealed that the Central Bankruptcy Court has made an appointment for the first inquiry session of Bali Hai Co., Ltd. (Waterfront Project) rehabilitation case, on July 17, 2017, which was previously postponed from the former appointment in June 2017. Approximately two years prior to the rehabilitation case, due to many issues and illegal activities, including the construction and the land issue, Bali Hai Co., Ltd. has been ordered the government department to stop the construction of the project. For transparency and resuming of the project, the buyers are encouraged to raise all necessary issues to this court for the consideration of involving the buyers in the management of rehabilitation plan, to ensure all further activities of the project shall be according to the law. Magna Carta is now representing more than 30 creditors. There are also another 30 to 40 creditors who have appointed other law firms in Pattaya to be their representatives. Therefore, at the moment, there are 60 to 70 creditors of this case; whereas, there are about 40 creditors who already filed the motion with the Central Bankruptcy Court. The creditors’ motions are now separated into two groups: (1) object to this rehabilitation due to the illegal actions of Bali Hai Co., Ltd., and (2) agree with rehabilitation but object the plan preparer. The second group will need 2/3 of creditors to vote for appointing the rehabilitation plan preparer. We are hoping the developer is willing to have an open discussion and show their will and effort to solve the issues, which could lead to a good solution. Wimuktayon also stated that if the court has an order of disapproving the rehabilitation process, then all the rights that have been given to Bali Hai Co., Ltd., since its submission of the rehabilitation petition, shall be revoked, which may lead to the creditor being able to file the lawsuit to redeem the investment, or even filing the bankruptcy case. However, it is difficult for Bali Hai Co., Ltd., to return the investment to all creditors because the debt, according to the rehabilitation petition, is higher than 2 billion baht.

Elite card VISA EXPANDS
Another choice is the Elite Family Excursion, 800,000 baht for a five-year, multiple-entry visa. This program targets business people and international visitors whose children are studying in Thailand. Of particular interest to many retirees is the Elite Easy Access which costs 500,000 baht and allows multiple-entry travel for five years without the requirement to leave the country. However, there is a requirement to attend an immigration office to extend the visa every three months if the holder does not choose to leave the country. This visa variant has been chosen by some elderly expats who prefer not to tangle themselves in the increasingly complex bureaucracy of the traditional one-year retirement visa which may -- or may not -- be under substantial review by the Interior Ministry. “There are now a number of options for individuals and families,” noted an elite card spokesperson.
“They pay between 500,000 baht and 2 million baht for long-term visas and benefits, lasting from 5 to 20 years, with discounts on offer for close relatives and dependent children. The full details are on our website and the application procedure is straightforward.” The elite card over the years has had a chequered history. It was originally suggested that one benefit might be to allow card holders to purchase land in their own name; this never happened. It was also promoted as providing such benefits as hassle-free departure and arrival at airports and free limousine services. Another disappointment. However, the recent diversification of the membership categories to include families and the introduction of proper marketing policies abroad have assured a future. But, as the name suggests, the Elite Card appeals to international tourists and expats with a high measure of independent finances.

MICE ready to hold Bangsaen42 Marathon Rut Jiroajvanichakorn, managing director of MICE and Communication, reveals that the idea behind Bangsaen42 occurred after MICE organized the first Bangsaen21 in 2015 when many runners suggested that they should hold a marathon distance race. Since then, for two years, MICE has been in preparation for this race and thus Bangsaen42 Marathon will be held by MICE and the Saensuk Municipality under the theme of “The Passion of World-Class Marathon” on Sunday, November 19 from 3:30 am to 10:30 am at Bangsaen Beach, Chonburi. He adds that Bangsaen42 was founded with the determination to organize a Marathon distance race that reaches world standards. MICE aims for the event to be certified as the IAAF Gold Label Road Race in 2022 and to become the largest race event that Thai and international runners cannot miss which will be on the same level as the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon and Berlin Marathon. What runners will experience is the high standards found in international races according to IAAF standards, from cer tified distance from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the Association of International
Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) as well as race organization certification from the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) and the Athletic Association of Thailand (AAT). Roads will be closed throughout the race, emergency medical units as well as doctors will be on standby as well as emergency vehicles. Moreover, a 100,000-baht medical insurance will be made for all runners while anti-doping test will be carried out to comply with IAAF Label Road Race. A strict cut-off system will also be put to use: seven hours will be the cut-off time for the race which will have five checkpoints. Should runners fail to arrive within the cut-off time,
they will not finish according to standards set by international races for the runner’s own safety. Another highlight of this race will be new technology such as the e-Slip system that will report race results via SMS to each runner immediately after reaching the finish line. Moreover, a facial recognition system developed by a group of Thai programmers called ThaiRun will be used to facilitate the race from determining which runners will receive prizes to searching for runners’ photographs. Register for Bangsaen42 Marathon at www.bangsaen42.com. The registration fee is 1,500 baht.

News Thailand to promote Eastern Economic Corridor as a premier tourist destination by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org
TEN COMMON MISTAKES
CONFIRMING DOCUMENTS Some people will tell you that the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will confirm the authenticity or truth of a document signed by your embassy in Thailand. In fact, the Thai Ministry simply confirms the signature of the officer in your embassy, not the veracity of the document itself. FOREIGN WIFE A foreigner applying for a retirement extension in the old days could include his foreign wife in the application without the need for additional income or bank deposit. Not anymore. The foreigner and his legal spouse must separately provide proof of income or bank deposit worth 800,000 baht. Some immigration offices will accept 1.6 million baht in a joint Thai account. YELLOW BOOK Contrary to speculation, there is no national checklist for including a foreigner’s name on the yellow (house) book which then qualifies the farang to have a “pink” Thai ID card. Some local authorities require the passport and birth certificate to be validated in the country of origin, but not all. In some areas, the pink card is automatic but others claim they are not issuing them at the moment. LAST SEVEN DAYS It is no longer possible to receive an extension of stay once the foreigner has received the final seven days permission in his passport. The final seven-day extension means that the passport holder must leave the Kingdom at the end of that period. For example, it is not possible to receive a one-year retirement extension of stay under those circumstances. You must leave the country. COURT PROCEDURE Unlike most court systems in the world, there is no word-by-word transcript in court trials in Thailand. Instead, the presiding judge will speak into a Dictaphone every few minutes and give a summary of what he or she has heard. Full court proceedings, including the summary, are available after the trial is completed. PAUPER’S CREMATION Embassies will try very hard to find next of kin or friends who will pay for a cremation locally in Thailand. But if, at the end of the day, nobody can be found to provide the funds, the Thai state takes the responsibility to organize what is known as a pauper’s cremation which is obviously very basic. In rare cases, bodies are handed over to the Sawangboriboon Foundation (or equivalent) and are buried. GAY MARRIAGE Recent reports that Thailand now allows same-sex marriage or civil partnership are not true. The state does not recognize these unions for official or legislative purposes. However, a will leaving possessions or cash to a same-sex partner will usually be honored by the judge deciding “probate”, provided there is no substantial legal challenge from other aggrieved relatives. TM30 This immigration form has created a great deal of controversy on social media in particular. Contrary to what some people claim, the TM30 is interpreted differently in immigration offices. Thus some immigration offices demand the form when registering for 90 days, others insist one-year visa holders are included. But you will only know your situation by checking locally. Best of luck! PRISONERS’ RIGHTS Foreign prisoners in Thai jails often have special requests – reading glasses, vegetarian diets, medical problems, etc. – but the decision on all these matters is at the discretion of the prison governor. Although reasonable requests from individuals are usually met, the technical position is that embassies can request special consideration. WORK PERMITS There is a persistent misunderstanding that voluntary work by a foreigner does not require a work permit issued by the Department of Labor. In fact, the alien labor act of 2006, as amended, precludes all work whether paid or rewarded, or not. Teaching English as an unpaid volunteer or helping out in the wife’s shop may, or may not, create problems with the Immigration Bureau.
The Royal Thai Government has identified tourism as one of the four core areas that will help transform the Kingdom’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) to be the leading economic zone in Southeast Asia. Covering the provinces of Chonburi, Rayong and Chachoengsao, off the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, the EEC is also known as the Eastern Seaboard and enjoys excellent transport and trade links, as well as wellestablished manufacturing zones for the petrochemical, automobile, and electronic industries. It also has a hugely successful tourism sector, which the government plans to extend, improve and promote with the help of agencies such as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Y u t h a s a k S u p a s o r n , TAT governor, said, “Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor is a diverse region and offers a huge range of attractions to tourists and visitors. We want people coming here to work or travel to have the chance to explore the culture of the area. They’ll find communities offering unique local experiences from exploring bustling markets to making connections with people via homestays and fishing excursions. Foodies will love the area, especially the farms and orchards where amazing fruit can be enjoyed.” The well-established tourist resort of Pattaya is renowned, and visitors come to visit the beach, enjoy fine dining, nightlife and offshore attractions. But now there is a drive to extend and improve attractions offering more diverse and family-friendly experiences in the beach resort city as well as in the nearby provinces of Rayong and
Chachoengsao. Tourist attractions in the EEC area that have become popular for day trips include the Cartoon Network Amazone water park, which is popular with young people, and the exquisite Sanctuary of Truth that is a showcase of Buddhist and Hindu art. Chachoengsao has many unique local attractions including a 100-year-old market on the local canals and fruit orchards where visitors can take tours and enjoy freshly picked products including durian and mangosteen. More natural attractions in the EEC include Koh Si Chang, which has a fascinating history having once been home to King Rama V the Great’s summer palace. It is currently being developed to accommodate more tourists and attract visitors coming to watch the Air Race 1 World Cup Thailand, being held from November 17-19, 2017 at nearby U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport. Nearby Koh Samet in Rayong is popular with Bangkok weekenders and boasts sandy beaches and clear waters for bathing. Chonburi’s Sattahip is home to attractions such as Koh Kham Undersea World, and there is a plan to develop a new commercial seaport as well as to expand the Chuk Samet Pier. There are also plans to further develop the seaports of Laem Chabang and Map Ta Phut.

Yuthasak said, “These developments will allow the EEC area to be more accessible to cruise liners and luxury yachts bringing high-quality tourists into the region and further boost regional transport links.” Such transport links are vital to the success of both tourism and business in the EEC. While Thailand’s main gateway, Suvarnabhumi Airport, is easily accessible for the Eastern Seaboard, the U-Tapao RayongPattaya International Airport is being converted into a commercial airport with the construction of a second runway and the building of a new passenger terminal. Rail transport will also be developed with plans to develop a high-speed double-track railway into the eastern provinces that will connect the three local international airports, Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya helping facilitate business and tourism in the area. There are also plans to build faster and more comprehensive rail routes between airports, ports, industrial and urban areas. Yuthasak concluded, “Transportation and easy access for everyone can only boost tourism in the EEC area and will benefit local people and businesses. By prioritising tourism in the EEC, we are also helping local communities benefit with investment, jobs and income.”

A new printer by Derek Franklin It is just over a year since Aurora, the co-founder and principal Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind, retired and in her place Chid has been making a lot of changes. Chid is a remarkable man. He went blind following an accident at the age of eleven, and then attended his nearest school for blind children in his native Isaan. Following his graduation from Grade 12 he applied to study sociology at Khon Kaen University, but was refused entry as it was thought that a blind man could not study. So Chid did something unusual, he called every news media outlet in the local province and then went on hunger strike. Three days later a very hungry young man was offered a place at the university, which he refused; he did not want to be offered a place, he wanted to sit the entrance exam and prove he was worth offering a place to. Four years later he graduated and moved to Pattaya where he started teaching and now he wants his students to think more about their future, and to concentrate more on their studies. Construction on a brand new purpose built library is complete and it is stunning
compared to the old library which was just a spare room with lots of books. But books for blind and visually impaired children are not like the books most of us are used to. They have to be printed on a special type of paper using a Braille printing machine, which, as you can imagine, costs a lot of money. The school recently held a Buddhist prayer ceremony and welcomed the local community to attend and donate to the Education Fund at the school which will fund a brand new printer, the cost of which is just over 600,000 baht. Nine monks from a local temple prayed and chanted, the children performed, families visited, donors donated and it wouldn’t be Thailand without food which was provided free of charge by many local food vendors. Not all the money needed was raised on the day, but it is hoped that by the end of the current year the new printer will be printing all the children’s favourite books; you can only imagine how much it will cost to print all seven volumes of the Harry Potter series. Australian Wine and Food Feast at Benihana Pattaya
Guests were in for a treat at the latest culinary event of Benihana Pattaya where Australian wines meet Japanese cuisine. On hand to welcome guests were Matteo Clini, area sales manager at Independent Wine and Spirit (Thailand) – distributor of the featured De Bortoli Wines, and Ian Cotting, F&B manager and in charge of all Benihana outlets in Thailand – AVANI Pattaya, Anantara Riverside Bangkok and AVANI Atrium Bangkok. It was an experience like no other as Benihana Pattaya held a feast of sips and nibbles while enjoying the performance of teppanyaki cooking and live acoustic music. A refreshing De Bortoli Family Selection Sparkling Brut opened the guests’ palates with wasabi nuts before the affair commenced. As the door opens a feast awaits with charcuterie and cheese selection, Japanese snacks takoyaki and yakitori, and handcrafted raw seafood delicacies at the sushi bar – the likes of Tropical Island and Rocky’s Mountain Sandwich. These nibbles were matched with a De Bortoli Sacred Hill Semillon Sauvignon Blanc with its fresh and fruity notes. It was soon time for the chefs to slice, dice, sizzle and sear as they put on a show while creatively preparing seafood and teppanyaki meat. Seafood sizzle butterfish with miso sauce and river prawn with butter blanc sauce were paired with De Bortoli Windy Peak Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Grilled to perfection lamb cutlets with mint sauce went well with the dry and medium-bodied De Bortoli Family Selection Merlot. The evening’s highlight Australian Wagyu tomahawk was loaded with flavour and perfectly matched the bold and texturally mouth-filling De Bortoli Woodfired Shiraz. Visit Benihana Pattaya on 2nd floor of Royal Garden Plaza for good food and good fun.

The Okura Prestige Bangkok. This ultra-modern Japanese luxury hotel sits on a super prime location in the heart of CBD Bangkok, Ploen Chit BTS. The name says it all The Okura Prestige and the Elements restaurant is taking its identity cue from the four elements of earth, water, fire and air. The concept is contemporary lifestyle dining with modern gourmet gastronomy. Recently a dozen of Bangkok’s wine aficionados gathered at the Elements restaurant on the 25th floor with balcony access and panorama vista. Our host was Australian physician PhD turned vigneron Dr Ray Nadeson. Gastronomy by The Okura Prestige Bangkok’s Australian executive chef Antony Scholtmeyer. Welcome toast. We raise our flutes of sparkling Bellavista Alma Cuvee Brut Franciacorta. Dry or “brut” – the perfect kick-off. Then the culinary fireworks start by chef de cuisine Antony Scholtmeyer and his team. Scallop tartare scented with hajikami ginger served with creamy egg yolk, soya bean wafer, watercress and fresh wasabi. Heavenly paired with a world-class Pinot Gris by Lethbridge 2016. Alsatian style, exhibiting an attractive blend of delicate pear, blossom and citrus aromas. Perfect with the ginger-watercress-wasabi combo. Next the pink salmon poached in olive oil with sancho served with mushroom consommé jelly, pickled mushrooms and nori wafer. Pairing with Lethbridge Chardonnay 2016 a beautifully clean, pure nose of ripe melon, lemon zest, white peach, lychee and honeycomb, with traces of baked apple. The fruit was handpicked from vines yielding 1.52.0 tonne/acre. Lethbridge is a boutique winery, par excellence. Our host the medical doctor, researcher who became a passionate winemaker tells us about his grapes, his 25-year-old Lethbridge Victoria vineyard and winery. The aim is to produce natural, savory wines that focus on balance and texture with a real sense of place or terroir. The first main course from the Elements kitchen arrives: duck paired with Pinot Noir. Duck roasted in honey and spices with Japanese flavors: soba grains, red cabbage, charred Japanese turnips and

raspberry vinegar jus. Washed down with a most impressive Lethbridge Pinot Noir 2013. Abound with power, both in fruit density and tannin yet juxtaposed with lifted aromatics and long acid backbone. A culinary triumvirate: duck in honey, Japanese turnips and Aussie Pinot Noir. The grand finale for all meat lovers Iberico lamb rack with truly international flavors: petit farcis, panisses, ginkgo nuts and premium sarawak black pepper. The pepper and the lamb – deserves a Shiraz (French call it Syrah) full-bodied, dark in the glass with all the flavors present. Swirl it in the glass (let it breathe) and it gets better. The Lethbridge Shiraz an excellent “coolclimate” Aussie Shiraz displaying a deep purple colour with a powerful
bouquet of pepper, spice and blackberry. “This is as good as it gets,” says one of invited, a young Thai gentleman, the CEO of Thai steel company. The dessert arrives: a feast for the eyes and the palate. Fresh peach yoghurt and yuzu sorbet with almond crunch and kinako (Japanese ingredient made of roasted soy bean flour) with the fresh peach and yuzu sorbet (a Japanese lemon with bright floral flavors) is irresistibly delicious. Paired appropriately with a glass of Massolino Mosacto d’Asti 2015. At the end a big hand for our Lethbridge vigneron Dr Nadeson, The Okura Prestige Bangkok’s Chef Antony Scholtmeyer. Last but not least: GFour, importer of fine wines and spirits.

TRX Suspension Training by Rory Coughlan
Are you tired of using 20 different machines just to finish your total-body workout, why not try TRX suspension training. It is an all-in-one motion that combines strength and flexibility. You do not have to use stacks of weights to build muscle. Suspension training uses your own body weight from different angles to engage more muscle groups at the same time. Something as simple as a chest press or biceps curl becomes a core-stabilization exercise. TRX trains for reactive stability. If your core is not tight, you will lose balance on the straps. Contracting your core before you move becomes second nature. You are relying on your own ability to marry your centre of gravity with your base of support. 1. TRX Single-Leg Squat Place your elbows under your shoulders and, with tension on TRX, centre right leg to anchor point. Place the opposite heel on the ground to assist working leg. Then, lower your hips down and back, allowing the knee of your assisting leg to bend. Keep the majority of weight in your working leg and allow the weight to transfer to your assisting leg as needed. Drive through your heels, extend your hips and stand tall. Repeat with left leg. Common faults: Leaning too far back, bending too far forward at the waist.
2. TRX Y Fly Extend your arms overhead in a “Y” position—palms forward, tension on TRX, offset feet. Lower your body down, keep your arms extended, and maintain a plank. Pull on the handles, drive your knuckles back, and lift your chest while keeping your eyes on the anchor point. Common faults: Breaking at the hips, bending elbows. 3. TRX Atomic Pike Start in plank position—place your feet in the foot cradles, your knees on floor, and your hands under your shoulders. Lower your chest to just above the ground. Keeping your ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles in alignment, push back up to plank position then immediately hinge at hips. Drive your posterior up while keeping your torso straight. Keep your body tight and engaged, and lower back down to a plank position. Common faults: Dropping chin, looking forward, bending knees.

Scotland in the glass at Dicey Reilly’s Dicey Reilly’s was the venue recently for a tasting of the iconic and much loved The Balvenie whisky. Continually under the ownership of William Grant & Sons since 1887, it continues to sweep the industry’s gold medals and produce stunning malts that keep its reputation growing. Led by the master blender, David Stewart MBE, the company’s whiskys are handcrafted in Speyside using centuries-old skills passed down through the generations. To lead us through The Balvenie experience, the charismatic regional brand ambassador for Southeast Asia, Neil Strachan, expounded the joys of drinking The Balvenie whiskies from their distillery in Banffshire and how to appreciate the intricacies of the blending and maturation of these Scottish gems. Strachan was born and bred in the Northeast of Scotland, just a stone’s throw from the distillery. He now resides in Singapore spreading The Balvenie message around Southeast Asia. He stated, “At The Balvenie, we stay true to our Five Rare Crafts, making whisky the way we always have. Our craftsmen have an intimate understanding of their materials and a desire to make the very best whisky possible. Our process is a combination of expertise, skill and ambition which gives The Balvenie its unique character.” We were to be served three specially created food courses to pair with each whisky, but before they arrived Neil imparted some singular tips to increase our enjoyment and appreciation of the malts. Firstly, a small tulip shaped glass known as a “nosing glass” is imperative. It traps the aromas in the bulbous bottom of the glass for perfect detection and pinpointing. After the pouring, notice the colour and clarity and gently swirl it to coat the sides of your glass taking note of the “legs”. “Nose” your whisky well by bringing the rim of your glass about an inch from your nose, and when ready, finally lift the whisky to your lips. The first course introduced roasted New Zealand mussels baked in

parchment with herbs in a white butter sauce and the chosen whisky, a “DoubleWood” 12-year-old single malt. Who knew roasted mussels and whisky would make such good friends? Not “any” whisky of course but this pedigree which has been matured in two wood types: a traditional oak cask and an European oak sherry cask, each stage affording its own special qualities to the malt. Smooth and oh, so mellow with a nutty sweetness and that underlying sherry flavour; we were fast becoming The Balvenie admirers. Pork sous vide with butter, herbs, carrot puree and tomato relish then hit the table with another wee gram, this time my favourite of the evening, a “Caribbean Cask” 14-year-old. This particular malt had been matured in traditional oak casks for 14 years and then finished in Caribbean casks that had previously held rum. Malt master David Stewart then filled the casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums and when he decided it was enough the casks were emptied and filled with the 14-year-old spirit. The result is unbelievable, rich, sweet and creamy with a soft and lingering finish. Eaten with the buttery pork and a quite delicious tomato relish it was alike to a walk in the Highlands with a glass of The Balvenie in hand. I apologise for gushing – you really should have been there. Lastly the Clan Leader was introduced – a “DoubleWood” 17-year-old single malt. It gains its

name from having being matured in two distinct casks: a traditional whisky cask followed by a shorter period in an European sherry cask. The taste is elegant and complex with shades of vanilla and honey with just a hint of green apples. Grilled lamb tenderloin with prune sauce proved the perfect partner to this aged gentlemen of the glen. More “Slainte” followed and connoisseurs and novices, swirled, sipped and swallowed further into the night. STONEFISH WINE TASTING Venued at Wave Hotel, Pattaya Beach Road
The award-winning wine company Stonefish International from the Hunter Valley in Australia with support from Wine Dee Dee Pattaya Co., Ltd. hosted a delightful wine tasting evening venued at the Wave Hotel on Pattaya Beach Road. The well-known company presented six of their most successful labels to accompany the canapés from the kitchens of the Wave Hotel. Founded in 2000 by Peter Papanikitas, the winery strives to produce vintages that exhibit all the attributes that make viniculture in Australia a global phenomenon. Peter is an extremely experienced and passionate winemaker and his presence at the event contributed greatly to its success. The vinous event set sail at sunset with the melodious tones of a live duo with canapés and a glass of bubbling Stonefish Gold Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Adelaid Hills SA. This popular party wine is a premium sparkler with an all-embracing appeal. The fresh bouquet is enhanced by stone fruit and even strawberry flavours complemented by a soft mild palate with a creamy finish. A flute of Stonefish bubbly sipped overlooking the bay of Pattaya as the sun slipped over the horizon was a sensational start to the evening as the tables started to fill and the talented duo swung into their repertoire. The next pouring of the evening was a Stonefish Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Margaret River. A fresh and lively white to suit all occasions with a special affinity for pairing with seafood and light prawn dishes. Chef had prepared miniature prawn skewers scattered with fresh chilli and a shrimp salsa accompanied by a tricoloured bell pepper salad. The Gold Medal Winner (China Wine & Spirits) Chardonnay 2016, Margaret River was an extremely popular glass of delightful flavours with a palate of citrus and peach to the fore but with hints of soft spice. Grilled scallops with an orange sauce and crab cake mayonnaise married well. It was now time to pour the reds Peter Papanikitas, owner director of Stonefish Wines

A winner, this juicy Merlot with its plum and earthly overtones and lengthy fruit finish was much appreciated for its pleasant light tannins. This was a very popular wine and well received amongst the evenings tasters. Roasted smoked pork with tomato carrot and chicken Miami paired off appropriately with this light Merlot. To finish, a Stonefish Shiraz, Margaret River, SA, had been chosen. A youthful, enthusiastic wine with a ripe palate, well balanced and willing to marry with most foods, especially chef’s mini cheese beef
burgers and cocktail sized beef steak sandwiches. This Double Gold Winner from China Wine & Spirits delightfully brought down the curtain on another successful tasting from the Stonefish portfolio. Remember back in the day when the Swedish Volvo cars looked like a Lego block carrying the motto “Volvo for life” while playing “Dancing Queen” by ABBA on the CD. Flash forward to 2016 and Volvo’s entirely new architecture four-door, five-seat S90 designed and built in Torslanda, Sweden is launched and receives rave reviews worldwide: a big, prestigious, supremely comfortable, high-tech executive saloon. Now directly competing with the German Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. Design: Boxiness is gone. The new S90 boasts a long hood with a striking concave grille and the iconic boomerang Thor’s hammer headlight with full active high beam LED lights. Side view: limousine sleek and elegant with matching large 19-inch alloys. The understated wide rear comes with C-shaped LED brake lights. On the deck lid the badges spell it out: VOLVO S90 D4. The latest Swedish automotive design at its best. Interior: The cockpit and passenger space is homage to strippedback Scandinavian expression of understated luxury. The use of unvarnished rare Nordic wood accents feels posh. Fit and finish simply outstanding. Case in point the delicious
super soft Nappa leather upholstery combined with Volvo’s orthopedic, multi-adjustable seats, still the finest in the business, with loads of adjustment on offer and backache isn’t an issue on long trips. The rear seat, with its separate climate zone, will accommodate three tallish passengers. Trunk space 500 liters enough room for the IKEA Markus swivel chair and Billy bookcase in flat packs. The new dashboard comes with a 12.3-inch color graphical driver display. Another detail. No more clutter of too many switches and buttons. The tech inside the Volvo S90 is userfriendly and called Sensus Connect. The highlight is the 9-inch central touchscreen with vertical display. Similar to my new cool iPad 2. S90’s touchscreen provides quick access to navigation, media everything from Bluetooth, radio and phone calls, Apple CarPlay with iPhone compatibility as well as in-car settings for A/C. The S90 audio system is the Bowers & Wilkins, one of the world’s best stereo sound systems pumping out 1,400 watts through 19 loudspeakers with three acoustic modes: Studio, Individual Stage and Gothenburg Concert Hall. This system will blow you away whether you listen to ABBA, Adele, Bach, Miles Davis or Pavarotti!

VOLVO’s New S90 Prestige Sedan “Made by Sweden” Volvo Cars High-tech Flagship Shakes Up the Luxury Market
Engine: The Volvo cars years ago used to be powered by 5-cylinder motors. Now, it’s four cylinders, stateof-the-art, turbocharged downsizing. Our S90 D4 Inscription comes with a fuel-efficient twin-turbo clean diesel. Displacement 1,969 cc producing 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque matched to a silky eight-speed auto transmission providing quick shifts during suburban and highway driving. With a choice of three drive modes: Comfort, Eco or Dynamic. Fuel consumption approximately 20 km per liter.
Safety: Who invented the three-point seat belt? Volvo in 1959. In 2004 the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with radar sensor. Today Volvo’s safety concept is called “IntelliSafe” including the whole safety alphabet soup and more for example: auto braking with pedestrian and large animal detection (moose in Sweden and buffalo in Thailand) which is standard on all S90s. Another feature related to safety is Volvo’s Pilot Assist. Put simply, this semi-autonomous driving system reads the road stripes and traffic ahead and then controls the throttle, brakes and steering. PA operates up to 130 km per hour on marked roads and no longer needs to follow another car. It helps adjust steering to assist keeping the car in the lane. This feature will take the boredom out of long distance driving. Also worth mentioning is the high-resolution 360-degree park assist camera. Drive: Cars are getting smarter at reading the world around us and Volvo is one of the smartest. As a luxury sedan, the S90 is a competent highway cruiser. The front-wheel D4 diesel engine provides plenty of traction.
Our test drive to Hua Hin in heavy weekend traffic the “self-driving”, semiautonomous Pilot Assist impressed me and my navigator. Driving back to back Bangkok in the night. Heavy rain and dark tarmac. Japanese motorbikes without tail lights and pickups with illegal funky blue taillights. Night-time driving on Thai highways and byways is often a challenge. Here Volvo’s super bright LED Active Bending Light provided extra safety. Verdict: The all-new Volvo S90 D4 should be on your test drive list. Great styling, elegant, functional interior and standard semi-autonomous driving system. Style, Safety and LUXURY. A very clever vehicle. But also an enjoyable driver’s car, whether you’re commuting to work or enjoying a weekend getaway. Volvo S90 D4 Inscription Price: 3.99 million baht Engine: 2.0-liter 4-cylinder twin-turbo diesel Power: 190 hp Torque: 400 Nm Transmission: 8-speed auto, front-wheel drive Average fuel consumption: 20 km/l Top speed: 230 km/h www.volvocars.com/en-th

International Property Specialist Course Once again, the Certified International Property Specialists Course (CIPS) returns to Bangkok presented by America’s National Association of Realtors® (NAR) and Thailand’s Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (RESAM). The single-most edifying event in Thailand’s real estate industry unfolds at the Victor Club, FYI Center on Rama 4 in Bangkok August 12 to 16, 2017. Thailand’s RESAM organization-established in 2005 by its first president, Dr. Pairote Sukjan, and the Thailand Real Estate specialist’s committee--are again joining forces
through exhibits and seminars for continued education. RESAM’s president is wellknown industry player Somsak Chutisilp, managing director of BCP Housing Co., Ltd, one of Bangkok’s leading real estate agencies. NAR, the world’s leading real estate alliance, is headquartered in the United States. With 1,269,300 members, it is America’s largest trade organization. Real Estate. For more than 10 years now Thailand has had the opportunity to have such esteemed CIPS instructors as Camila Ma, Aida Turbow and David Wyant. Wyant, a 25-year veteran in global marketing, branding and strategic sales, returns to teach the upcoming course August 12 to 16. As a leading NAR member at the institutional level, he serves as a faculty member for CIPS and as a real estate instructor and broker in Florida, where he has served as director, secretary, treasurer and president of that state’s trade association. Wyant was named Realtor® of the Year in 2006 and the NAR CIPS Instructor of the Year in 2009 and 2012. The intensive five-day CIPS training course will certainly go a long way in solving the credibility problems facing many in the Thai real estate industry who do not have the formal real estate education and certification to achieve international recognition. Huge credit must be given to the dynamic Nancy Suvarnamani, the NAR president’s Global Coordinator Asia Pacific, Lebanon and UAE. Suvarnamani is president of Century
Our very special thanks to Clayton Wade, managing director of Pattaya’s Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., for preparing this Pattaya Today column. Clayton Wade is managing director of Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., the Eastern Seaboard’s leader in exclusive property sales and rentals, and managing director of Premier Land and Development Co., Ltd. Clayton Wade has been running Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., with his wife, Khun Supap, for more than 20 years. 21 Chicago, a brokerage with more than 100 agents. Without the input, representation and magnitude of her hard work, this course simply would never have happened. She assisted RESAM in getting special scholarship funding and provided the connections to execute the CIPS training course here. She has made many trips to Thailand from America to ensure every detail. The CIPS training course in 2013 enrolled 58 industry professionals; in 2015 there were 34. The week-long program culminated with a gala dinner and certificate presentation ceremony. It was one of the most ‘feel good’ networking events I have witnessed, with everyone pleased with themselves for having passed and for having met so many fantastic fellow real estate professionals from Chiang Rai to Phuket and the rest of Thailand--not to mention several students from America. Pattaya was represented by a huge contingent of students; the Pattaya Real Estate Brokers Association had more than 10 students including the local Russian community. All were certified. Actually, I also took the

He is an instructor with the Thailand Real Estate and Business School (TREBS) and heads the International Marketing Committee as vice president for the Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association of Thailand. He also is a council member with the Gerson Lehrman Group, the New York-based international research and consulting firm, and is a registered consultant with the Coleman Research Group in Hong Kong. He has been a national panel judge with the Thailand Property Awards for 10 years. Having done business successfully in the Eastern Seaboard/Pattaya area for over 20 years, Clayton Wade is known throughout the Asia-Pacific region for his public speaking and television presentations as well as
certification course in October 2013 for a second time as I was asked by Nancy Suvarnamani to participate in the CIPS Instructors Training course. I was subsequently appointed as an official CIPS instructor and audited my first class as an instructor in 2015. Next month I will serve as David Wyant’s assistant instructor. NAR has only 47 registered CIPS instructors--six of whom are outside the US. It will be a tremendous plus for Thailand and Asia to have a certified CIPS instructor in our area. With such educational events and the opportunity of continued instruction and education from local real estate practitioners, Thailand has a great future as a hub for Asian real estate education and development. A big thank you and a big bravo to RESAM president Somsak Chutisilp, and a very special show of gratitude to Nancy Suvarnamani for bringing all of this to Thailand. Thailand real estate…bigger, better and smarter than ever! Litigation in Thailand What is litigation? Litigation is the process of taking a case to a court of law or carrying on a lawsuit for settling controversies or disputes so that a judgment can be made. What courts deal with civil and criminal cases? The general courts are ordinary courts which have authority to try and adjudicate criminal and civil cases. Those courts are: • Civil Courts • Criminal Courts • Provincial Courts • Municipal Courts (Kwaeng Courts) Under Thai Law, the plaintiff must bring a civil case to the court where the cause of action arises or where the defendant is domiciled. Where an immovable property is involved, the plaintiff has to bring a lawsuit to the court where such property is situated, or where the defendant is domiciled. As regards criminal cases, the court in a district where an offence has been committed, alleged or believed to have been committed, or where an accused resides or is arrested, or where an inquiry official conducts an inquiry, has jurisdiction over the cases. The primary function of Municipal Courts is to dispose of small cases quickly with minimum formality and expense. The jurisdiction of these courts covers both criminal and civil cases. Criminal cases fallen in the jurisdiction must deal with the criminal offence punishable with a maximum of three years imprisonment, or fine not exceeding 60,000 baht or both. For civil cases, the amount of claims must not exceed 300,000 baht. The proceeding in Municipal Courts is emphasized on the speedy trial; therefore, the trial is more simple and oral judgment or summarized judgment may be issued. How long will my case take if it goes through the litigation process? Each case is different. The length of the litigation procedure depends on the complexity of the legal issues and facts. The volume of cases being handled by the court also affects the process. Some lawsuits can be resolved quickly, whereas others may take several years to conclude.
Is there an alternative to filing a lawsuit? There are different alternatives to filing a lawsuit, depending on the legal situation. Mediation and arbitration are two of the several Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods for settling disputes without resorting to lawsuits. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to any means of settling disputes outside of the courtroom. It typically includes early neutral evaluation, negotiation, conciliation, mediation, and arbitration.
Mediating a case before filing a lawsuit enables the parties to present their case to a neutral third person who assists in finding mutually acceptable agreements before any money is spent on litigation. What is the difference between arbitration and mediation? Mediation is a form of dispute resolution facilitated by a neutral third person who assists the disputing parties in finding mutually acceptable solutions. It gives the parties the opportunity to discuss and clear their issues and find areas of agreement. If the parties reach an amicable solution, they may enter into a binding and enforceable compromise agreement. If those involved in a dispute cannot resolve it by mediation, they often submit it to arbitration. Arbitration takes place out of court. The disputing parties select an impartial third party, known as an arbitrator. Disputing parties agree in advance to comply with the arbitrator’s decision then participate in an informal hearing at which both sides can present evidences and testimony. The arbitrator’s decision is usually final, and courts rarely reexamine it. Can I file a lawsuit at any time? Lawsuits must be filed before the statute of limitations. What should I do if I get sued? It is important that you have an appropriate legal counsel to comprehensively and competently evaluate your case at an early stage. Defendants usually have a specific period of time to respond.

Business News Thai culinary innovators Mango Tree Worldwide launch wicked new tastes and wild new menus in Taiwan Innovative restaurant operator Mango Tree Worldwide is bringing its stylish brand of Thai food to Taiwan with the opening of two outlets in the capital Taipei in the second half of this year as it looks to emulate its huge success in Japan where it now has 23 outlets. A host of innovations are in store for Taipei’s foodies with a seafood ice bar and numerous Thai twists such as flatbreads, bao’s and small plates for sharing while introducing dishes such as Thai Jungle Curry as Mango Tree lives Thailand’s legendary street-food legacy. Global Managing Director Trevor MacKenzie recently inked a deal with newly established Mango Tree F&B Co., Ltd to launch one each of its fastest growing brands Mango Tree Bistro and Mango Tree Café as the Mango Tree brand enters Taiwan for the first time. “We’re really pleased to be introducing Mango Tree into Taiwan,” MacKenzie. “We have been eyeing the market for many years, but it is always the case of finding the right partner and having the brands for the market as we know Taipei is a great foodie city. “I’m confident that we have this now and with Taiwan’s familiarisation with Thai food and its love of Thai culture – shown by the million plus tourists who visit each year – we are expecting a strong and long term relationship with the
market and our new partners.” The first outlet to open in August will be Mango Tree Seafood Bistro. Designed in classical colonial décor, the 105-seat restaurant located in the elegant Da Chi district, will blend traditional and modern Thai, with Western dishes. The menu selection will consist of 50 percent seafood and 35 percent meat and 15 percent vegetarian dishes, with shrimps, clams and fish available on the ice cold bar. Single dishes cater to the lunch crowd with a Seafood & Salad bar with Thai, Japanese and Italian dressings. Small plates (Tapas style) which will start from Happy Hour (5 to 7:30 pm) at the bar, and later as starters for the main dining room. Main dishes will feature less refined, more hearty street-like food. In 2017, Bangkok was voted the best street-food city in the world and Mango Tree would like to continue to live this legacy. The second outlet is expected to open in November. “We are very much looking forward to bringing the exciting Mango Tree Thai restaurant brand to Taiwan,” said director Coning
Yu. “For me this is a brand that represents the genuine and truly authentic flavours of Thai food and delivering them through fun, modern and creative concepts in terms of restaurant design, presentation and a tantalising Thai twist. For us this is also just the start as we fully intend to extend the numbers of outlets around the city and into secondary destinations as we secure sites and the brand gains greater recognition among diners.” Mango Tree restaurants can be found in many of the world’s major capital cities including London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Osaka across four brands formats – Mango Tree, Mango Tree Bistro, Mango Tree Café and Mango Tree Kitchen. The leading Thai food franchise group operates 42 outlets worldwide, as well as 24 COCA Restaurants, its sister brand, for a total of 66. By 2020 the group expects to operate a total of 100 outlets worldwide. Mango Tree Café is the leading individual brand with 14 outlets across Asia, with Japan having the largest total number of restaurants at 23 outlets.

Business News Nakhon Phanom selected as venue for Mekong Tourism Forum 2018 by Tourism Authority of Thailand
Thailand’s Northeastern or Isan province of Nakhon Phanom has been chosen as the host venue for the Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF) 2018. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports proposed Nakhon Phanom as an ideal host venue for the event because the province’s eastern border is the Mekong River itself and this influences the culture of the region. Nakhon Phanom, which means “The City of Mountains”, is being promoted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as an up-andcoming tourist destination in Isan, as the province boasts modern infrastructure with convenient road and air connections. The 3rd Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge across the Mekong connects Nakhon Phanom with Lao PDR’s Thakhek Khammouane region, and there are daily Nok Air and Thai AirAsia flights to and from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor said, “Nakhon Phanom, which borders the Mekong River, is an ideal venue for this regional conference. The province offers amazing Mekong scenery and culture, and of course, the warm Isan hospitality. We’re excited to showcase this lovely province to delegates of the MTF 2018.” Nakhon Phanom offers many beautiful and timeless natural and cultural attractions such as the annual illuminated boat procession in October to mark the end of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa) and the folk culture of the local Phu Thai ethnic group. The Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge also contributes to cross-border trade and tourism by making it easy for tourists looking to visit both Lao PDR and Thailand to explore the Mekong culture. In Nakhon Phanom city itself, there are many attractions for tourists including temples such as Wat Phra
That Phanom, which was built in the local style and is one of the most important temples in Isan. Other attractions include the Provincial Governor’s Residence Museum with its neo-Colonial architecture and Mekong Underwater World, which teaches visitors about the underwater life and ecosystems of the river. In terms of accommodation, Nakhon Phanom has a good range of high-quality hotels with the more upmarket hotels offering Mekong River views. There has been an increase in people visiting Nakhon Phanom for meetings and conferences, and Nakhon Phanom University participates in the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau’s MICE Curriculum Programme, ensuring that the region will have professional meeting and events expertise on hand as the sector grows. Organised by the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office, the MTF gives stakeholders in the region, both public and private, a platform for joint discussions on the promotion and marketing of travel and tourism to and within the GMS countries – Cambodia, China’s Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces, Lao PDR., Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The forum also promotes sustainable growth in the industry and invites keynote speakers to talk on tourism issues. MTF was first organised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in 1996 and the hosting rotated among GMS nations until 2005. The event was revived by the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office in 2010 and is now held annually. MTF was most recently held in Thailand in 2012 in the northern province of Chiang Rai. Last year, the Forum was held in June in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR.
Traveliko Online Portal wins Digital Innovation Award Socially and environmentally conscious online travel portal and hotel booking platform, traveliko, received a Digital Innovation Award at the recent Digi.travel Thailand International Conference and Expo held in Bangkok. The newly launched portal offers hotels and travellers a groundbreaking approach to online travel, giving more freedom and support to hotels while also providing guests with the opportunity to make a difference in the destinations they choose to travel. “Our team worked for three years to develop traveliko in order to meet the needs of today’s sophisticated, tech savvy, socially conscious travellers. We are honoured and delighted that its value is already being recognized within the travel industry with this Digital Innovation Award,” said Yann Gouriou, cofounder and chief operations officer of traveliko. “We want to provide an alternative booking option for travellers while supporting hotels with lower commission rates, and giving back to the communities our customers are visiting.” Traveliko takes a flat 10 percent commission on all hotel bookings, a rate significantly lower than most other OTAs. The company then encourages its hotel partners to pass the savings onto their guests in the
form of added benefits and services, it is also committed to supporting local communities and projects in the countries where it offers hotel accommodation. Users can donate 20 percent of the net commission from each booking to projectoriented charities. “The Digital Innovation Asia (DIA) Awards are dedicated to supporting digital adoption and growth within the travel and tourism industry,” explained Jens Thraenhart, founder of DIA. “As a newcomer to the market, traveliko has already started to make a name for itself and help push the envelope when it comes to offering hotels and travellers a unique and empowering booking platform.” In addition to the fourth
Digital Innovation Asia Awards, the second annual Digi.travel Thailand International Conference and Expo 2017, organised by Travel Media Applications in cooperation with PATA Thailand Chapter, featured a number of workshops and break-out sessions. Gouriou was one of the guest speakers at the conference where he introduced the traveliko concept and explained its disruptive approach to online travel. “Traveliko is proving to be a popular alternative,” he explaind. “We launched in May and already have agreements with a number of international hospitality companies, along with smaller chains and independently-owned hotels, in nine Southeast Asian countries.”

Business News Thailand Shopping and Meetinthailand.com Dining Paradise 2017 being rolls out nationwide promoted in Mae Sot by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is promoting crossborder shopping and travel in the busy border town of Mae Sot in Tak province, as part of the Thailand Shopping and Dining Paradise 2017 campaign to enhance the popularity of Thailand as a destination for people who love great shopping, delicious food and unbeatable bargains, as well as to boost the number of intra-ASEAN travellers through special events in four other cities in Thailand’s Special Economic Zone. The Thailand Shopping and Dining Paradise 2017 at Mae Sot is taking place from June 1 to July 31. Korawit Wongprasert, TAT executive director of the Tourism Investment Department, said “The Thailand Shopping and Dining Paradise 2017 at Mae Sot is aimed at encouraging Thais and foreigners, especially from Myanmar, to visit
Mae Sot, an economic border of Tak, and shop while enjoying local attractions and food. We also take this opportunity to showcase Tak’s great potential for cross-border trade and tourism to investors and traders from Myanmar.” TAT in collaboration with the Tak Provincial Commerce Office and Tak Chamber of Commerce has invited 16 investors and traders from Myanmar to attend the business visits as well as a three-day/twonight familiarisation trip from June 29 to July 1. Participants travelled to Tak from Myawaddy via the ThaiMyanmar Friendship Bridge. The Myanmar investors and traders had the chance to join a business networking with Thai tourism and trade professionals, participate in the opening ceremony of the Thailand Shopping and Dining Paradise 2017 at Mae Sot, and visit Tak’s various attractions. They also had the chance to visit Mae Sot’s shopping facilities and
savour Thai food at the many wellknown restaurants. As well as Mae Sot, TAT also organised special Thailand Shopping and Dining Paradise 2017 events in Sa Kaeo’s Aranyaprathet district (bordering Cambodia) on June 1617, Songkhla’s Hat Yai district on June 10, and Khon Kaen’s Mueang district on July 1-2. The Thailand Shopping and Dining Paradise 2017 takes place throughout the country through July 31.

The rolling launch of meetinthailand.com, Thailand’s first and only in-depth, interactive online portal for the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industry – has now been completed, following its ‘soft’ regional launch in Phuket in November 2016. According to Grenville Fordham, founder and managing director of Image Asia Events (IMAGE asia), the company behind meetinthailand. com, the website now hosts detailed business profiles of approximately 600 MICE suppliers, including 320 hotels with MICE facilities, as well as exhibition/convention centres, DMCs, tour operators, event organisers, restaurants and more – spread across nine areas of the country: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui plus the wider regions of central, north, northeast and south Thailand. “Obviously, we’re still in the early stages of reaching out to national and international MICE buyers – who this MICE portal is designed for – but even during our rolling launch phase, we’re seeing satisfying growth in visitors per month (at around 250 percent from January to June 2017) to what is, after all, a very niche website,” said Markus Vogt, Image Asia’s business development manager who leads the MICE project team. According to Vogt, the next phase of development is about encouraging more hotels, venues and other suppliers to upgrade their profiles to include more detailed information, multimedia products and downloadable brochures, menus, etc, while ramping up the promotion to MICE buyers using a combination of industry targeted marketing and SEO tools. “Our objective is to give venues and suppliers in Thailand’s MICE and weddings industries an opportunity to showcase their offerings in a detailed, searchable, multimedia environment, which they can access and update themselves using comprehensive, secure back end tools,” said Vogt, adding, “For buyers in these industries, meetinthailand.com represents a unique opportunity to preselect venues and other event suppliers – based on easily accessible, hard information.”
This comprehensive website is not just about providing information. The range of buyers’ ‘tools’ is also impressive. There’s a buyers’ ‘Wish List’ (a kind of shopping basket) that allows you to save possible options as you browse and – really important – your choices are saved for next time you log on. Then there’s the automated ‘Request For Proposal’ (RFP) feature that sends a detailed enquiry direct to your short list of suppliers in the ‘Wish List’ with a single click – a real timesaver. The last item in the toolkit is the interactive checklist that helps you keep track – all in the same secure online location – of all the details while planning an event. The online ‘toolkit for buyers and suppliers’ and the supplier business profiles are not all. The website is a continuously updated source of destination information, as well as tips and tricks for a successful event in Thailand. Last but not least, there are news pages that represent an impressive aggregator of news relevant to anyone planning an event in Thailand. “I’ve seen event buyers waste time and money on inspection trips to Thailand, armed with inadequate information,” said Fordham, adding, “The fundamental proposition of meetinthailand.com is that no buyer should need to travel to Thailand on an inspection trip without a meaningful shortlist of venues, suppliers and opportunities preselected on the basis of comprehensive, up-to-date information – and with a file of real time quotations/proposals in hand.”

From my experience as a middle school math teacher, being a little creative can go a long way in the classroom. Using humor and connecting math to the real world also has its benefits. We all know that, at times, middle school students can benefit from an extra boost in motivation. Below are some of my teaching strategies for motivating students to learn in the middle school math classroom. Demonstrate the Worth of Mathematics in the Real World. A critical component to switching students on to math is to show them how it is used in their everyday lives. Many students do not understand that the tools they use every day (Twitter, Instagram, and texting) come from an engineer. When you help students make this connection, it can, in turn, motivate them, and they will be able to appreciate how mathematics can translate into a career. Our students need to be career ready when they leave our schools. Many jobs in the future will be math-based as our world continues to use technology for more and more. It is important for our students to understand the “why of math concepts along with learning the process. This lends itself to creating problem solvers who can enter the work force ready to generate creative solutions to future problems or obstacles. Incorporate Technology into Lessons Children love technology and anytime that you can incorporate it into your lessons, the better. Simply teaching students to use a complex calculator can spark their interest in solving more complex and in-depth math problems. There are also numerous apps that can provide students with challenging games. These apps also provide the students with a different vantage point to approach solving problems, not only in mathematical situations, but in real life situations as well.
Use Creative Seating and Alternative Learning Using alternative learning seems to be very beneficial to students who might be struggling to find meaning in the math classroom. Allowing students to get out of their seats and work on the floor or in groups gives the students the opportunity to develop educational conversations with their peers and work in a setting where they are most comfortable. Project-based assignments can also be very beneficial in showing students how their work is connected to everyday life. Present a Challenge
When students are challenged intellectually, they often react with enthusiasm. Presenting your students with a challenge that is both within their reach and can peak their excitement will lead to an incredible classroom discussion along with a feeling of achievement when the challenging problem has been solved. Be Enthusiastic While Presenting Math Another powerful tool to cultivating a love for math within the students is your own enthusiasm while teaching. Children attach value to subjects. If they see that their teacher values mathematics they will see that there is importance in the subject and will be more motivated to succeed. Used together, these techniques create a vibrant and challenging math classroom where students feel empowered and ready to succeed. Morgan Jorgenson teaches Middle School Maths, years 7 to 9, at Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That Tap, tapping at your window frame The Raven is a slapstick comedy
The cycle of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations by Roger Corman are supposedly horror films. But, after the first three – House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum and Premature Burial – the allure began to falter. The plots were yawningly very similar each containing premature interments, Gothic mansions and serious mental illness. A different angle was required. The Raven (1963) provided the answer. It’s hardly an atmospheric
thriller although it is set in a Gothic castle, or rather two to be precise. But it is a wacky slapstick comedy with touches of black comedy here and there. Actually, some of the humour was not even in the script but was improvised by Peter Lorre adlibbing as when he queries the high bill for cleaning up a large, dusty crypt. The Raven’s plot bears no similarity to either the 1935 film of the same name nor to the poem of Edgar Allan
Poe. As sorcerer Dr Erasmus Craven (Vincent Price) is mourning the loss of his beloved wife Lenore (Hazel Court), Dr Bedlo (Peter Lorre) turns up as a raven after losing a magic battle with yet another sorcerer Dr Scarabus (Boris Karloff). Having brought back Dr Bedlo to human form by a witch’s brew of bat’s blood, eyeballs and hairs of a corpse, Dr Erasmus learns that his wife isn’t dead after all but living in Dr Scarabus’ castle. Soon it’s off to Scarabus’ castle and into mayhem, mishaps and magical duels. Compared with scriptwriter Richard Matheson’s other scripts in this series, the storyline here is admittedly thin. No hidden meanings, just fun with some boring bits in-between. Price plays the type of role we rarely see him act out – a well intentioned sorcerer who drinks warm milk before bed, is vegetarian and doesn’t mind a bit of social work, including turning animals back into human beings. Lorre and Karloff, horror heavyweights,
are in fine form. By 1963 Karloff was aging with creaking joints and Lorre was not long for this world with his dicky heart, but both of them put on a credible show. They are meant to be fun figures rather than wicked magicians. Corman’s direction in The Raven is less studied than in, say, The House of Usher, but his standard point-and-shoot method works for the comic nature of the movie. He neglects to utilize the full Cinemascope frame which leads to a lot of dead space. Despite some fancy camera work in the climatic magical duel scene between Price and Karloff, The Raven isn’t this director’s most visually appealing film. The Raven is just a comedy and Corman’s direction methods require a deeper interpretation than the movie can offer. The movie’s main significance perhaps is that it publicized the original Poe poem of 1845 which is in effect one of the world’s best known verse in couplets. It
traces a man’s slow descent into madness and many horror novelists, for example Steven King, have been influenced by the work. A bird heralding the arrival of doom is a common feature of 20th century literature and film. But it is in the realm of popular TV that the comedy side of The Raven has found a true home. There’s a raven in a Donald Duck cartoon with Huey, Dewey and Louie. The Simpsons have an episode Treehouse of Horror which concerns a certain raven, whilst the bird also
figures in episodes of The Munsters and Batman. Who could ask for anything more? Poe might well have been disgusted by latter-day interpretations of ridicule, but laughing in our world is one way of dealing with the macabre. The opening of the original Raven poem is, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary.” The Bugs Bunny cartoon Craven Raven starts off, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I nodded nearly napping.” Yes Poe certainly would have been disgusted.

How To Divorce-Proof Your Marriage: Follow These 7 Simple Tips To Keep Your Love For Life
by Professor Blunt
(Jan 23 – Feb Aquarius 22) It’s time to review your
tedious existence on a day-to-day basis. You need the head in an unfamiliar direction rather than simply taking a baht bus to the nearest pub. You tend to allow your sex drive to get the better of your common sense so be careful lest the new direction takes you to the police station. Do not take up any of your old interests as they got you into this mess in the first place. Pisces (Feb 23 – Mar 22) You spend far too much time helping others rather than seeing to your own agenda. Helping old ladies across the road is good but fairly pointless if you get knocked down by a passing truck. Be very careful this weekend about dating somebody you have just met as it’s likely that he or she will be playing for both teams. I don’t mean Manchester United or Everton by this prediction, so don’t say you weren’t warned. Aries (Mar 23 – Apr 22) By all means lean on a trusted this coming Tuesday or Wednesday as the stars predict you will need a crutch or possibly a wheelchair. Try to avoid busy roads, ladders or hill tops during this period. Do not misinter¬pret someone’s interest in you. Just because somebody smiles at you doesn’t mean the promise of lifelong bliss. They may simply want to borrow your lawnmower or beg a cigarette. Taurus (Apr 23 – May 22) You must try a lot harder to get other people to support you in a crisis. Just sending a round-robin email when your house has burned down may not bring the solace which you are seeking. Be extra careful about your precarious finances and do not rely on impulsive decisions to help you get extra cash. Remember that the jails are full of ATM criminals whose tow-rope broke during an unsuccessful heist. Gemini (May 23 – Jun 22) Changes in your domestic life are likely as Venus dips below Mars at an unusual time of the year. Be prepared for the worst such as your partner walking out for good or the roof falling apart during a freak storm. Those of you in work can expect a small piece of welcome news, such as that your compulsory redundancy has been delayed by a fortnight. Cancer (Jun 23 – Jul 22) Because you are not remotely charismatic you are always going to have problems getting people to cherish you. This is why most Cancerians have given up trying and instead rely on massage parlors and shady bars for their friendships as people there tend to be less particular. One suggestion is that you stop looking for love and start loving yourself but please do not take this advice too far.
While nothing in life is guaranteed – especially considering our deplorable divorce rates – there are ways you can increase your marriage’s resistance to divorce. 1. Lots Of Sex! Platonic friendships and marriages shouldn’t have a lack of sex in common. Nobody gets married to be in a platonic relationship. If you can’t have sex for whatever reason, make sure you let your spouse know how much you enjoy it when you do, and how much you’re looking forward to the next romantic interlude. 2. Get Rid Of The Attitude
hearing compliments. You should get in the habit of complimenting your spouse daily. They may think it slightly odd to start but pretty soon it will become ingrained as a natural relationship bolstering routine. 5. Couple Time Being cooped up in a house together does not count as quality time together. Instead you need to go out on a date. Romantic walks, dinner at your favorite café, or popcorn and a movie at regular intervals where you can catch up on what is happening with your lives are a necessity. The day to day chaos of the household is not conducive to such conversations so take yourselves somewhere quieter. 6. Kissing Goodbye And Kissing Hello
You may think you’re never wrong but you should at least consider the possibility. Many marriages end due to clashes of the ego. Make sure you add the word ‘we’ into your daily life. Our egos give us a sense of me and mine. If both partners are fighting for their own interests with little regard for the other, then this can be a recipe for future separation. 3. Don’t Make Assumptions We have the saying “when you assume you make an a**hole out of ‘u’ and ‘me'” for a very good reason. In the majority of cases this saying hits the nail right on the head. Avoid assumptions by making sure you understand exactly what your partner meant. Ask them to explain it differently if you have any doubts. We often end up feeling angry and resentful for things that aren’t even real. Your partner can also feel confused, bitter, and lost because you accused them of something – which always ends up destroying trust. 4. Compliments Over Criticisms Constant criticisms can undermine our confidence and often end up creating the problem of negative thinking. There’s also the dilemma of many people having trouble
Kisses and hugs are a way of affirming your connection, devotion, and commitment to each other. Leaving for work in the morning should be punctuated with a quick hug and a kiss. Likewise, the return visit should elicit the same response. It may seem a trivial thing but it is a powerful relationship building technique. Plus you will also get a warm glow whenever you think about it during the day. 7. Talk More Openly, More Often, And More Honestly You need to be brave as many people have trouble opening up – even to a close loved one. You may feel vulnerable speaking so candidly about your innermost feelings but you’ll enjoy the benefits it brings. After all, you can’t really expect your partner to understand your needs if you never let them know what they are. Less monologues and more dialogues are the order of the day. Don’t just focus on the facts but make sure to put a bit of emphasis on the feelings as well. Busy couples who work different hours may need to schedule this time together. Make sure you do as it’s very important for a strong and long-lasting relationship. (Jul 23 – Aug 22) Trusting Leo what someone says to you will most certainly have financial repercussions, so watch your step. Be on your guard against casual conversations with strangers as they may be trying to trick you into opening your wallet or lending them your credit card. The world is a wicked place and believing otherwise is the quickest route to an early doom or worse. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) Rethink your plans and ideas before you share them with an influential person. For example telling the judge that it was not you but your twin brother who burgled a neighbor’s house simply won’t work especially as you are an only child. In your personal life, try to avoid getting to know people in uniforms as they are almost invariably bad news especially during the night. Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22) Stay on top and don’t let oth¬ers topple you from your pinnacle of self-confidence. If you let your guard down even for a moment you will get serious opposition. You are in urgent need of making new friends although this will not be easy as you are a self-centred and pompous idiot who has been kicked out of most of the Rotary clubs in your area. Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 22) You are feeling bored so concentrate on learning something new or improving your skills. You may need to buy new equipment as a pack of cards minus one ace or a chess set without the bishop can lead to problems during play. Don’t wait to be told the truth. Just because nobody mentions your halitosis does not mean you smell OK. Many leaders, including Attila the Hun, had this problem. Sagittarius (Nov 23 – Dec 22) You will only make headway in your life if you take a serious and respon¬sible approach to teamwork. Dropping the baton because you are not running fast enough will not win you any friends and supporters. You tend to believe what you want to believe irrespective of the truth. Doctors advise drinking no more than two bottles of wine per week and not per night as you persist in thinking. Capricorn (Dec 23 – Jan 22) Sad to say, your approach to life is far too academic. You fail to relate to people at their own level. Thus when a black person asks you for directions he does not want a lecture from you on the history of racial discrimination in the United States. Nor are obese persons grateful if you choose to relate their condition to high blood pressure and the likelihood of early death.

Local Sports Bob and Dick Rocket to Jens Olsson’s gross 74, the top on a colorful day! Best of the Day by Jeff Wylie
by Dick Warberg Stableford Rainbow It was the 4th of July, also known as American Independence Day. For those living in Pattaya, it's not the time to reflect too much on history, nor discuss the political implications of the event. It's a good day for a party! To celebrate Tropical Golf held a red, white, and blue rainbow competition at Crystal Bay. Never mind those are also the colors of the British and Thai flags, we “Americanized” the event by having mini “slider” burgers, potato salad, and more, and pie with ice cream after. First there was golf to tend to. The annual 4th of July “rainbow” competition was a little different this time. Each player could choose what color tee he played off on each hole; the only requirement being to have six of each color tee by the end. Some put detailed thought into a strategy, while others just went in RWB order all the way round. Some played all six blue tees first to get them out of the way and cruise home on the easy tees when fatigue set in, and a few just figured it out as they played. Whichever way one decided, it was an interesting day. Some people had it
Winners Warberg and Watson dig into the Sliders figured out just right as there were some good scores. A-Flight (0-15): A bevy of good golfers brought the A-flight level down lower than usual, but even so the skilled Bob Watson (6) showed who is boss with an excellent 39 points off his minuscule handicap. Awesome, Bob! Right behind was the equally talented Landis Brooks (7) with his small handicap earning 38 points. These guys are good! Returning John Pierrel (15) and Selwyn Yates (10) came next tied at 37 on countback. B-Flight (16+): Organizer and All American golfer Dick Warberg (18) had the high score of the day with a bottle rocket high 40 points! Show them whose day it is,
Dick! Andre Van Dyk (16) put his homework to good use by claiming the next spot with 38 points, followed by Joel Flor (28) with 35 and Barry Oates (26) at 33. Rainbow Prizes: The best red tee scores were shared by Maurice Roberts and Mick Coghlan. Best white tee score was won by George Bayley, and the best blue tee score went to Phil Davies! After the presentation a good old American spread was put out, with some Thai food of course. Everyone especially enjoyed either the apple or cherry pie dessert. A special thanks to Dick and Brian Parish for their extra work for a fun day and the staff of BJ's Holiday Lodge for the feast after.
Brian Parish once again in the news!
Jens Olsson - Low Gross Winner PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold The day started off under clear skies with a light breeze for the June PAGS tournament, this month on the Lakes and Ocean combination. For today’s field of 108 keen players which included only 11 ladies, after last month's high of nearly 20. With the fairways and condition of the course having improved considerably over the past few months, the ball was played as it lay. However, with the upcoming Ladies Pro tournament, there were a lot of tees well forward, to protect the tee boxes for the pros. This resulted in an abundance of high scores, with anything under 40 points not figuring in the prizes. As with most months, there is generally a standout performer or two on the day. This month it was Jens Olsson the clear star of the day with his gross 74 to win the low gross, a technical and his 40 points enough for 3rd in the A flight.
Low Gross winner Jens Olsson (6) got third on countback over Larry Immelthun, Pelle Pettersson and Frode Brandt, after all finished with 40 points. All three did pick up at least one technical in their round, so didn’t go home empty handed. Honourable mentions for multiple technical wins on the day should go out to Grant Jackson, Jack Grindvold, Pelle Pettersson and Gentry Harrington. Dave and his team from the Sportsman and the Hemingways crew did a fantastic job of keeping all the golfers and their guests satisfied in the food and drinks area. We will all look forward to another successful tournament on July 26. Contact Shane on 0863720084 or through Birdie at www.birdie.in.th to ensure your preferred tee time.
by Dick Warberg Pattavia – St It was “double seven” day for the Tropical Golfers, and whether you write it the American or European way, July 7 is a good day to hope for the best of luck as it was also kicking off a new Golfer of the Month race. A lucky 13 golfers met at BJ's Lodge for the trip to Pattavia Century. The drive there isn't as bad as in the past, and some parts even a little scenic. We found Pattavia in very good to excellent condition. The 950 baht to walk is good value, and they gave us a coupon for free beer or a meal after the round! This place knows how to make friends! Several golfers were asking about a return trip even before the round was over, and the Chang Beer staff increased the sentiment for some. One thing some people didn't like is the slick, highly sloped, and tricky greens. A typical three putt was one well past the hole and hopefully just two coming back. To be fair Pattavia is not the hardest setup and needs that to defend the course
Wan - Ladies Winner
Winner Brian Parish from overly high scores. Even though many complained about the tricky greens (in good shape by the way), the bevy of high scores made such complaints seem weak. Results: After just one game of golf without making headlines, Brian Parish (c/h 13) showed he is still “The Man” despite a plummeting handicap. Not only did he make the news again, he did it in style with yet another #1 finish with 40 points! If Brian's round was an order of
eggs they would be scrambled, however it takes discipline to not give up and Brian is the best at that. Look for the BP Golf School to open soon. Next up returning John Pierrel (17) and Dick Warberg (21) tied at 37 points, with John Sykes (31) taking the final bow with 36. Notice the results were in handicap order too. Best Nine (non winner): The best half games of golf were won by Tom Herrington (21 points) and Gordon Clegg (18 points).
The ladies winner was Wan (30), with her day’s best stablefored score of 44 points, with Nantaporn Rukkid a further two points behind in second spot. C flight, for handicap 22+, required a countback for all three placings, after Gary Jones (27), Dan Margetts (27) and Kenny Chung (27) all signed for a solid 41 points. Gary just getting the best of the trio, with 24 points on the back 9, Dan getting second with his 23 points, while Kenny had to settle for third after signing for 21 on the back 9. B flight, 15 – 21 handicappers, went to Hong Hi Wai (18) with an equal men’s best of 43 points, just a solitary point ahead of Kent Svensson (18). Third spot required a countback, eventually won by Keith Buchanan (18) over Tom Thompson 22/21 on the back 9, after both signed for 40 points. It was Martin Kempton (14) leading the way in A flight, 0 – 14, with his equal men’s best of 43 points. Dennis Paul (14) picked up the silver placing with a strong 42 points, while

Local Sports Bunker boys golf Mountain Shadow (blue tees) Another marvelous day on the golf course at one of our regular venues that was in good condition. The rough was punishing as the rains had encouraged growth making it difficult to get out without losing a shot. The first group was late on the tee and the second group jumped into their spot and proceeded to run around the empty course in three hours leaving the second group four holes behind. Then instead of waiting for a player in the last group to come in for a lift home they left the course knowing that their passenger would get a ride with someone in his group. Kob Glover, the only lady in our field, managed to claim a second near pin in two weeks. Colin Greig was the only player to beat his handicap while Neil beat Les on the count back with 17 to Les’s 15 on the back nine. Les was awarded the Golfer of the Month trophy for June having come in with a late run to pip Jimmy Carr. A round of drinks was appreciated by all.

rains had left a number of greens sopping wet making it like putting through treacle but as the day progressed they dried out making the back nine more playable. Robbie Watts, our reigning club champion, was the only player to equal his handicap, while Les beat Colin on the count back 18 to17. Colin and Paul Corner played the short holes, well managing to claim two near pins each. Les had a good week claiming a first, second and third place in this week. The greens were very good and were a fair pace. Les Cobban the GOTM for June, edged out Frank Quinlan on the count back with 18 on the back nine to Frank’s 14. Les would not pose for a photo for this win as well as the GOTM, claiming to be shy.

by Dick Warberg Silky Oak - St Greetings, golf fans. It was a 7-11 day, and time for the Tropical Golfers to treat themselves to a cart-required day at Silky Oak. Twelve intrepid golfers met at BJ's Lodge for breakfast and discuss the monstrous thunderstorm the night before. Several golfers seemed a bit bleary eyed after having their beauty sleep interrupted. How would it affect the course, and most important would it repeat during the round? Course condition was also a concern. Nothing to do but trust to luck and head out. Its nice to have a shorter drive once in a while. First course condition: Good to excellent. Other groups who visited SO the week before had negative feedback abut the recently maintained greens. Golf courses have it tough sometimes. To keep the place “up to par” the grass needs regular grooming, but that also makes conditions less than ideal for a while. Happy to report the greens are back to normal, and quite good. Fairways were overall good, though a few holes could use
Winner Parish with second Place Herrington some weed killer. Also, the golfers stayed dry while nearby Pattaya City got a deluge. Usually it’s the opposite! Silky Oak is a scoring course and this day proved that, the lowest score of the group was 32 points. These guys are good. However it's not the lowest score that is newsworthy this day but the highest – and how! Brian Parish. Again! Brian has been so dominant at Tropical Golf the last few months some might be forgiven for taking their sticks to another venue, or even throwing them away. So what does someone who has been winning so much do for an encore? How about winning in an even more convincing
fashion! The only thing coming on faster than Brian's handicap is the strokes he takes. At Silky Oak, Brian (c/h 12) crushed, destroyed, and demoralized all competition with a fantastic 44 points! Brian has been playing so well people are starting to ask what kind of clubs he plays and his favorite brand of coffee. A full five shots back, Tom Herrington (16) reappeared on the list with 39 points winning on countback over Mashi Kaneta (16). Next came Gordon Clegg (34) on countback over Graham Buckingham (35) at the 35 point mark. All for now. Have you ever noticed what golf spells backwards?

Emerald Not a large group gathered to have a crack at Emerald G.C. It turned out to be 10 of our core group of golfers that were prepared to have another crack at Emerald. Rumor has it (prior to today’s game) that if Glenn wins, Steve Younger is booking the next possible flight to get back here! The day was good, weather wise; the fairways were in great nick but the greens were still a little slow. Playing from the white tees the group attacked the course with enthusiasm and the scores showed as a result of that. Welcomes were handed out to new comer Denis Paul and we also welcomed back Martin Kempton and Fred Dineley, having a last hit with us before heading to Australia. Take care, Fred we will catch you on the return. Travel safe! Well, as it turned out, that man who has become the man of the moment went on to make it three from four, he has hit a purple patch and leaving all in his wake. Glenn returned to the clubhouse shooting 39 points, a great score; the bookies and the handicappers will be looking at this bloke from here on in. It was Alex Field that filled second place only one shot behind today’s winner, good job, a return of 38 points is very good on that track.
Worth a mention: Some people may think it strange that with such a small field we still play for “Near Pins and Long First Putts” At the Growling Swan we play these as it gives all golfers a chance to get on the “winners sheet” regardless of their handicap! D-For, our resident hound, collected donations again for the needy youngsters of Pattaya, and contributors are thanked once again. He is becoming quite good at this as our Donation Dog! For some serious golf with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 0861 503086 or the bar on 038 413 003.

You & Your Pets Anyone in your family aging and furry? We all learned in childhood that one year in our lives is equivalent to seven years in a dog’s life. Turns out that’s true—more or less—for cats as well as dogs. Veterinary medicine contends that in general pets are “middle age” when they turn seven and reach “retirement age” at 11, and often develop many of the same age-related issues seen in older people—from arthritis to senility. But every animal is different, so the senior life stage occurs at different ages in different pets, sooner for larger dogs and later for small dogs and cats. Those are not hard and fast rules; your pet’s genetics, nutrition, health, and environment ultimately determine his or her aging process. How active is your pet? Is your cat less playful than she once was? Does your dog need help climbing stairs or getting on and off the sofa? Such changes in behavior may be indications of increasing age, or they could reflect age-related degenerative health problems. Chronic degenerative disorders like heart and kidney disease are common in older pets, and so is cancer. In cats, kidney, heart, and thyroid disease are the most common aging conditions. Some breeds of dogs are more likely to
see a dramatic increase in cancers as they age. Both species are also prone to arthritis, dental disease, loss of sight and hearing, and a decrease in mobility. Like humans, aging pets may need more assistance getting around. And they may need more encouragement to stay active in order to slow the progression of joint pain and arthritis. A healthy diet and healthy weight contribute significantly to your pet’s longevity, health and happiness. Thanks to advancing medical care, our pets are living longer than they ever have before; special care can help increase the length and quality of life as they enter their golden years. * It is important for elderly pets to have semi-annual vet visits so health problems can be caught and treated early. Ask your veterinarian about any vaccination needs for your older pet. * Many aging pets need foods that are more readily digested, have different calorie levels, and have anti-aging ingredients. * Older pets can be more prone to parasite infection since their
immune systems are less healthy. As a result, they may not be able to fight off disease or heal as fast as they once could. * Keep your pet mobile and healthy through appropriate exercise. * Senility is common in older

This lovely mum was rescued from our local temple after someone dumped her and her babies there. She is still feeding her kittens at the moment but, in a few weeks’ time, we will get her neutered ready to go to a new home.
Buzz
This happy fellow was born on Christmas day so he is nearly 6 months old now. It is always harder to find homes for bigger kittens but, as you can see, he is a typical naughty boy. On this occasion we found him in a waste paper bin, but it's is not unusual to find him asleep even in the sink.
Bobbie and Smudge
These two lovely friendly sisters have been with us for a few years now and sadly, because they are a little shy of strangers at first, no one has chosen them. It would be lovely for them to go to a new home together as they are happy to be indoor pets if needed. Please give them a chance and a happy new home.
A small amount of distilled water is not harmful to your pet, but as a sole source of water, it is not recommended and can lead to serious side effects. Distilled water lacks minerals and can cause the body to lose important electrolytes through the kidneys, leading to low blood levels. This type of water can also soak into tissues more than water with minerals, thereby causing edema or over-hydration and water toxicity, which can be harmful to cells and tissues. Signs of toxicity include fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and neurologic changes.

Going to the Dogs... Labradors [are] lousy watchdogs. They usually bark when there is a stranger about, but it is an expression of unmitigated joy at the chance to meet somebody new, not a warning.
~Norman Strung
The oldest recorded age of a cat is 34 years. The oldest recorded age of a dog is 29 years. The Egyptian Mau is probably the oldest breed of cat. In fact, the breed is so ancient that its name is the Egyptian word for “cat.” Laika, a Russian stray dog, was the first living mammal to orbit the Earth, in the Soviet Sputnik spacecraft in 1957. Though she died in space, her daughter Pushnika had four puppies with Charlie, American President John F. Kennedy’s terrier.
