Are scams diminishing?
I
t looks like tourists and expats in Pattaya are wising up to some traditional scams. A recent survey by this newspaper, involving visitors and law enforcement agencies, has revealed that some traditional money traps have all but evaporated, at least for now! The renting of Jet Skis plagued the tourist industry for years. Typically, naive renters were charged large sums of money for damage to the Jet Ski – usually dents and crashes – which were there before the most recent transaction. City Hall, after ignoring the problem for years, has at last got its act together. The licensing system for Jet Skis has been modernized and the operators obliged to participate in a collective insurance arrangement. Our survey located only one example of the Jet Ski scam in operation. A British man rented a Jet Ski in Jomtien but failed to take a photo of the side of the craft before setting off. He admitted he was not sure whether or
not the damage was his fault and he agreed to settle the dispute for 5,000 baht. This is a considerable improvement on the 100,000 baht which a luckless Ukrainian paid barely two years ago. A regular Jet Ski operator told us, “The rogue companies can no longer rely on police participating in these scams or refusing to get involved. These
days the police will often take the tourist’s side or suggest that a complaint be made at the Pattaya Tourist Court which can handle arbitration.” He added that visitors now have almost universal access to a smart phone with a camera. “I always advise them to take several snapshots,” he claimed. Other scams which also seem to be in heavy decline
include touts wanting passers-by to rent timeshare apartments. The fraud included asking people to pay deposits on non-existent properties or to mislead customers into thinking they had exclusive use of the property whenever they came to Thailand. News Watch vendor steels phone
A mobile phone valued at 20,000 baht was stolen from an Omani tourist in a bar on Second Road. Humaid Said Humaid Al Kharbooshi said that a watch vendor approached showed him some replica watches. When Humaid refused to buy, the vendor left. The Omani looked for his phone which had earlier had placed on the bar, but it was nowhere to be found. Police checked CCTV footage and spotted the vendor taking the phone. The search is on.

Village wall collapses
Heavy rains caused the collapse of a village wall on Soi Kaotalo 3. One villager said that the water had accumulated in that area—preventing from flowing because another village had built a wall that constrained water flow. The years’ old problem worries residents and goes on unresolved.
A cement truck crashed into a grocery shop in the Huay Yai District. The driver, Supot Potlud, said he swerved to avoid another truck and lost control of his vehicle. Damage was estimated at 30,000 baht, which will be settled by the truck company.

Troops receive donations Around 40 participants from ASEAN countries attended a course on the Verification of Bulk Flow metering Systems using a Master Meter conducted by Thailand Department of Internal Trade and organized by Asia–Pacific Legal Metrology Forum (APLMF) at Pullman Pattaya Hotel. The objective of this project is to significantly improve the accuracy, transparency, and fairness of bulk fuel trade transactions in the Asia-Pacific region. A train-the-trainer course on flow measurement systems will assist participants to share and impart what they learn to staff in their own economies. Participants will receive certification.
In what was reportedly a “regular random check” of Soi Buakhao bars, military and police personnel checked the IDs and urine of more than 100 bar customers who had been dancing and drinking. Uncovered were 18 customers who tested positive for drugs and six packets of drugs on the floor. During the interrogation, the officers learned that the bar had been closed for five years for the same offense; it had been operating without a license, selling alcohol without permit, and allowing illegal drugs on the premises.

Twenty-one minors were caught by police in a club on Third road. The youngsters were taken to the police station to await the arrival of their parents, who also would be apprehended. The club manager was arrested.
A Cambodian national was found lying on Pattaya Beach Road after he had been stabbed by a gang of four or five men. The victim, identified only as Tana, had head and leg injuries. Witnesses said the gang was seen running around the area chasing each other when Tana just fell down. He was sent to the hospital by the Sawang Boribbon Foundation. Police officers found a bloody knife at the scene.
A bank manager from China was robbed of a 110,000 baht necklace by two ladyboys on Beach Road. Shengyu Li, 27, said he was in front of the A-One Hotel when two ladyboys drove up on a motorbike and chatted him up. While fondling the tourist’s arms and shoulders, the katoeys offered sexual services, which Li declined. When he returned to his hotel, the tourist realized that his gold necklace had been stolen during the encounter. Pattaya’s finest are on it.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced that CNN Travel readers list seven Thai dishes among World’s 50 Best Foods on its Facebook poll. The list is a reformatted and republished version of the original article published in 2011. Y u t h a s a k S u p a s o r n , TAT governor said, “We’re thankful for all the votes – a testament to the already solid reputation of the Amazing Thai Taste, which is part of our foodie tourism initiative to motivate tourists and foodies to embark on a culinary journey to taste signature Thai dishes in renowned venues across Thailand as the way to explore Thainess through food.” The latest CNN Travel World’s 50 Best Foods list was compiled based on the votes of 35,000 readers via a Facebook poll. The seven Thai dishes in the list are Tom Yum Kung in fourth place, Phat Thai (fifth), Som Tam Papaya Salad (sixth), Massaman
Curry (10th), Green Curry (19th), Chicken Fried Rice (24th) and Mu Nam Tok or spicy minced pork salad (36th). According to CNN Travel writer Tim Cheung, the original World’s 50 Best Foods article which was released in 2011 “stimulated some impassioned debate about the conspicuous lack of French dishes and the merits of ketchup over mayonnaise,” and so the online publication “threw it open to a vote on a Facebook poll.” Yuthasak said, “With seven Thai dishes voted into this influential list shows how Thai cuisine is increasingly perceived as a world-class culinary experience and Thailand a great destination for foodie tourism.” TAT plays a large role in promoting Thai cuisine through several initiatives, including launching the Amazing Thai Taste campaign in 2016, publishing several publications
about Thai dishes and ingredients and the best places to find them, and sponsoring a large number of food based events around the world. This year, TAT has entered into a partnership with Michelin Travel Partner to publish a Michelin Guide Bangkok as well as with Gault and Millau to publish a bilingual Thailand guidebook in the Gault and Millau Belux 2018 edition. In May 2018, Thailand will host the UNWTO Conference on Gastronomy Tourism.
Immigration Bureau on foreigners working in Pattaya illegally without work permits and the decline in the number of European visitors who might be interested in the concept. For various reasons, touts can’t make much progress with Chinese tourists who make up the majority of international tourists these days. Surprisingly, a dubious practice which continues to be popular is the “beer tower scam”. A group orders a 3-liter tower of draft beer but staff then insert a smaller tube with ice which reduces by up to 30 percent the space available for the beer. It is not suggested that this scam is commonplace in Pattaya and most bars, clubs and restaurants are more concerned these days with attracting customers rather than annoying them. If not exactly a scam, a common complaint by tourists this year remains harassment by transvestites. The most prevalent feature is the ladyboy gang who work in groups to try and distract a stranger by groping or kissing him whilst his
wallet or possessions are stolen. The group then typically escape on waiting motorbikes. A spokesman for Pattaya police said arrests had gone up markedly in recent months and many non-Thai cross-dressers had been sent back home, usually to Cambodia or Laos. He advised tourists not to wear expensive jewelry at night, to avoid dimly-lit areas and to keep valuables in a secure pocket or money belt. Overall, the most common scams recorded in our survey were – in order – street crimes, beer towers, wrong change (usually an argument about whether the note was 500 or 1,000 baht), and bill padding of one sort and another. Jet Ski incidents and timeshare fraud, which achieved headlines several years ago, were rarely mentioned as significant worries. A city spokesperson commented, “Pattaya is certainly improving as visitors become more sophisticated and the police continue to crackdown on illegal activities.” However, he conceded that street crime remains the biggest issue to be tackled.

A parade on Beach Road was staged to demonstrate Chonburi’s commitment to fight human trafficking. Organized by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the parade aimed to show that Chonburi and Pattaya support the government crackdown on human trafficking, calling it a problem involving illegal workers from neighboring countries, prostitution, and child labor.

TAT’s marketing plan 2018 has been designed to serve the purpose of generating revenue and increase visitor arrivals, promote new ideas and follow the development agenda of Thailand 4.0 using the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, as well as Inclusive Tourism that maintains a balance between the economy, society and the environment. All the strategies are in line with the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan and 2nd National Tourism Development Plan. As 2017 is considered as a challenging year, TAT has been putting their best efforts on tourism marketing in order to stimulate the country’s economy. Many activities such as Village to the World, Creative Thailand and The Link have been
among international visitors.” To be targeted over the 12-month period of the fiscal year 2018, beginning October 2017, the nichemarket customer segments were finalised at the annual TAT Action Plan meeting held between July 11 to 14, 2017. The iRescue team from Bangkok Hospital Pattaya conducted rescue training in Bangsarae School. CPR training was demonstrated to the participants. There now are six training schools in Chonburi.

The concept will deepen the Unique Thai Local Experience to a Million Shades of Thailand. This will give more depth to the presentation of Thailand’s tourism, grow the business for grassroots tourism sector players, and enhance the country’s image as a land of amazing diversity worth discovering further. For the strategy for the domestic market, TAT will focus on increasing the travel frequency of potential groups (silver age, millennials, families, gen-y, multi-generation, and ladies), decongest popular areas, promote travel during weekdays, strengthen society and preserve the environment. The domestic marketing campaign in 2018, will further enhance the slogan, “Unique Thai Local Experience”. The concept will promote tourism and create value
among the Thai people to persuade them to enjoy a trip in Thailand and go deeper in pursuit of unforgettable experiences. Some examples of new initiatives for domestic marketing by TAT include creating awareness of waste management during local festivals, promoting creative gastronomy, and building tourism networks to be environmentally conscious. Yuthasak said, “Clearly the age of mass-marketing is over. The future lies in sharply focussed marketing campaigns which can deliver measurable results. These will help us maintain a strong brand presence, improve the efficiency of our marketing spend, address the seasonality factor, decongest popular destinations and establish closer cooperation with potential partners that include many industry businesses and local communities who can contribute to the success of our objectives.” The number of visitors from January to June 2017, reached 17 million, creating income of 876 billion baht in which the China market was the first generator followed by Russia and Malaysia. Realising the importance that tourism has for the country’s economy, the Royal Thai Government has set a growth of not less than 8 per cent increase in tourism revenue for 2018.

FOREIGN WIFE FOLLOWS Immigration matters cause a lot of confusion. Some people believe that if a farang retiree on a one-year extension of stay has a non-Thai spouse, then that spouse automatically gets a one-year visa by following her husband. In fact, each partner now has to show 800,000 baht in a Thai bank, or proof of foreign income, or a combination of both. MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS There is a common misconception that the Thai ministry validates the contents of an official document, for example one signed by an embassy officer. In fact, the ministry simply confirms that the signature is a true and genuine one. But the ministry does not confirm the contents of paperwork which is not in the Thai language. PLEASE PROTECT ME The role of embassies is another huge area. When a foreigner feels threatened in Thailand, or feels they have been badly cheated, he or she may turn to the embassy for help. But all embassies will tell you that the Thai police, not them, are responsible for your safety. Embassies very rarely get involved in criminal cases, unless you are very high profile, although they will visit you in prison and suggest lawyers from a list. LIFE AFTER DEATH Embassies will try very hard to find relatives or friends to pay for your final visit to the temple. But if all else fails, the responsibility lies with the Thai authorities to burn you in what is called a pauper’s cremation. Occasionally, the unclaimed corpse is passed to the Sawangboriboon Foundation, or similar, and may even be buried for cheapness. TM 30 This form, which requires housemasters and owners to register foreign guests at immigration within 24 hours of arrival in the Kingdom , has created mammoth discussions on social media. But does it apply to absolutely everyone? What about retirees on one-year extensions of stay for instance? Well, the answer is that it depends on your local Immigration Office and how it interprets the policy. Best of luck! YELLOW BOOK This is another discretionary area. Some local authority districts readily issue the yellow house book to residing foreigners who present all the required documents in their possession. But other areas insist on your passport and birth certificate being validated in your home country. As regards the pink card (Thai ID for farang), again some authorities issue this with the yellow book, others claiming not to have necessary printing machine. WORK PERMITS It is often asked why Thailand bans voluntary work by foreigners. Well, it is the Alien Labour Act, as amended, which outlaws all work whether for reward or not. Teaching English on an unpaid basis or even helping out in the wife’s shop can be a cause for prosecution. In practice, there is discretion. For example, court translators and foreigners joining the volunteer police do not seem to need work permits. AUTOMATIC BLACK LIST Although the court can request a deportation of a foreigner, it is actually the responsibility of the Immigration Police to specify the details and the length of time which can vary from one year to 99. The penalties for overstay misdemeanors have been spelt out in detail in recent times, but there is huge discretion for other types of offences. PROSTITUTION LAWS These have created more discussion than any other area of law in Thailand, with much concentration on the age of consent. Actually, all prostitution in Thailand is illegal under the Entertainment Venue Act of 1960. You may have noticed it is not always enforced. OPENING BANK ACCOUNT A foreigner was recently angry when a local bank refused to open an account for him even though he had a passport, proof of address from Immigration and quite a quantity of cash to unload. In fact, there are no general provisions. Each bank can decide for itself whether or not it wants your business.

Two winners will represent Pattaya in competing with schools throughout Chonburi province. Buppha Songsakulchai, a public health senior officer, was at the event together with officers from consumer protection.

Our Community Anantara Hua Hin launches Soap for Hope Anantara Hua Hin Resort started a Soap for Hope CSR programme. To launch the project, team members and hotel guests took part in a soap recycling workshop and donated the re-used soap bars to local school children. Students also enjoyed an educational workshop and are now benefitting from extensive renovations to their school thanks to the Anantara team. Soap for Hope is a project that enriches lives and saves waste. Over 2.5 billion people around the world still lack proper sanitation and the programme aims to change this through recycling and donations. Over seven million children die each year from diseases that can be prevented with simple hand washing. Every year hotels generate tonnes of solid soap waste. In response, Soap for Hope
was created to teach at-risk communities to salvage hotel soap slivers and turn them into new soap bars. The charitable programme enables hygiene which saves lives by providing communities at risk with access to soap. The recycling project provides local communities with a livelihood and also helps hotels to reduce waste by turning used soap into something useful again. Soap is recovered from Sealed Air hotel customers, which are Soap for Hope programme partners, and then transported to a local site where residents reprocess it using an innovative but simple cold-press method. The new soap is then transported to communities in need
and distributed, thereby eliminating waste, improving cleanliness and creating new job opportunities for underprivileged communities. Community involvement plays a key role, and demonstrating its commitment to supporting local people and environmental care, Anantara Hua Hin Resort is proud to participate in this important project.
To launch its Soap for Hope CSR programme, Anantara Hua Hin invited guests to join resort team members for an inspirational day of education and giving back to the local community, supported by Sealed Air based in Thailand. The day began with a twohour soap making workshop at Anantara Hua Hin, learning how to recycle used hotel soaps into new soap bars. Resort team members and guests recycled a massive 20 kg of used soap into 120 soap bars. The afternoon was spent at Pa-La-U - an underprivileged community where the new soaps were distributed to Thoumnobphaeo School, which is attended by 86 kindergarten and primary students. The Anantara team
also trained the teachers and students to remake used soap, with 15 school children assisting to clean and cut the used hotel soap to be mixed, compressed and packed to make new useable soap bars. The day ended with a relaxing trip to Pa-La-U Waterfall, before returning back to the resort. In addition to the Soap for Hope activity, a budget of 189,125 baht was used to renovate and provide new equipment for Thoumnobphaeo School. The computer room was given new electric and LAN systems, computers were repaired and programmed, a printer was donated and a new sign for computer information was made. The medical room was refurbished with a new partition, curtain and door, two new medical beds and fans, first aid signage, new flooring and repainted cabinets. The school shop was given a new partition and the cabinets were repaired and repainted. The school music room received a new carpet and instrument signage. Seven classrooms were cleaned, the ceilings repainted, new wallpaper and flooring installed and the tables and chairs repainted. The school’s public areas and toilets were cleaned and repainted. The garden was re-landscaped and new trees planted. Centara to support programme that puts surplus food to good use Centara Hotels and Resorts, Thailand’s largest hotel operator, will participate in an innovative new charity operation that collects and distributes surplus food to benefit people in need, starting this August. The operation, ThaiHarvest|SOS is a joint initiative with OzHarvest, the pioneering Aus-tralian organization that has established a proven and successful “Food Rescue” model which is being adopted around the world, and the Thai Foundation Scholars of Sustenance (SOS)” The programme’s mission is to eliminate hunger and food waste through the redistribution of quality surplus food. Experts estimate as much as a third of food produced for human consumption is wasted in the transport, distribution, and preparation supply chain. When this food ends up

Food no longer fit for human consumption is taken to local farms for composting. The rest is refrigerated and delivered to the needy. in a landfill, it represents a tremendous waste of resources and a lost opportunity to help people unable to afford adequate nutrition. Eventually it hopes for all its Thailand properties to participate. These main two properties will also arrange an event called “Master Class Dinner”. It will be led by Will and Steve, celebrity chefs who won Australia’s The Seven Network’s top rating cooking show in 2015- My Kitchen Rules Australia and known as chefs who support OzHarvest campaigns and now ThaiHarvest|SOS.
“We are thrilled about the leadership taken by Centara to partner with us on our mission to eliminate hunger and reduce food waste through the redistribution of quality surplus food. Their commitment and support will allow ThaiHarvest|SOS to both help reduce food waste in Thailand and at the same time, provide good meals to those in need in our community”, said Gopi Krishnan, head of Programmes at OzHarvest and ThaiHarvest|SOS. “As we prepare food for our guests, unavoidably at the end of each day we have surplus – for example, bakery items or excess from a large banquet,” said Centara’s corporate director of Food and Beverage, Winfried Hancke. “It is a shame to let this food go to waste when there are so many people who could benefit from it.” Supatra Chirathivat, Centara’s senior vice president Corporate Affairs and Social Responsibilities, noted how well the programme fits the group’s social responsibility and sustainability goals. “Being a good member of the community means helping those less fortunate and using the Earth’s resources more efficiently. We’re so enthusiastic to support the work of OzHar vest and ThaiHarvest|SOS. Food is an area where we can all help reduce waste. I hope our involvement helps educate and inspire others to do their part.”

A Chinese gourmet experience wouldn’t be complete without the classics: crispy pork, BBQ pork, and roasted duck to be wrapped in Chinese pancake with spring onion and cucumber, which all go well with the BBQ sauce. For a guaranteed full meal, order a Yang Chow fried rice or Fookien style fried noodle. End the meal on a sweet note with delicious desserts such as mini custard bun and red bean bun. This culinary journey to authentic Chinese cuisine is best experienced with either Chinese white tea or Japanese green tea. Mantis the Dip With spiced and creamy sauce, trio of crispy and crunchy breads, romaine lettuce, pickled carrots and cauliflower INGREDIENTS 60 grams mantis shrimp meat 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 shallot, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, finely diced 1 red chili, finely diced ½ cup white wine 1 tsp Cajun powder 2 sprig of thyme 1 sprig fresh tarragon salt and pepper to taste 60 grams cream cheese 70 grams whipping cream 15 grams grated cheddar cheese 15 grams grated mozzarella cheese 10 grams chopped parsley 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted 30 grams sliced baguette 25 grams sliced brown bread 30 grams crispy dough 5 grams romaine lettuce leaves 5 grams pickled carrot 10 grams pickled cauliflower
METHOD
To make the dish and assemble Preheat the saucepan to medium-high. Sauté the shallot, garlic and chili until soft. Turn the heat to high then add the mantis shrimp meat and white wine. Add in the Cajun powder, thyme, tarragon, and season with salt and pepper. Add the cream cheese and whipping cream, stir thoroughly to mix well. Turn the heat to low, add in cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Keep stirring gently until the cheeses are completely melted in the mixture. Take the saucepan off the heat immediately. Pour all the mixture into the black metal pot. Put the pot under the salamander machine on high heat until the surface starts to brown. Garnish with chopped parsley. Do the plating and serve with romaine leaves and a jar of pickled carrot and cauliflower.

For the breads and condiments Slice the baguette and brown bread into 4-mm thick, 5 pieces each. Cut the brown bread into triangle shape. Brush all the sliced breads with melted butter on both sides then grill until starting to crisp and have grill marks. Prepare the dough, flatten, and put in the oven for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, take the dough out of the oven and cut into triangle shape. Bake again until crispy. Choose the romaine by using the inner part of the leaves. Pickle the carrot and cauliflower for at least a night.

Located in front of Kaan Show, D’Luck Cinematic Theatre, Thepprasit Road, it’s a striking building reported to have been built at an enormous cost. Three zones offer ground floor eating and drinking with an upper cool cocktail bar plus an alfresco and fashionable terrace for catching the cool breezes. It’s the place to be and Pattaya’s style setters are already on the radar. The décor leans towards the in vogue industrial but with so many elegant twists and modern furnishings, it is chic, stylish and well dressed. The menu is “Thai and Italian with a twist”; it’s new, innovative, eclectic and delicious. The cocktails are awesome and are sure to refresh as well as impress. The mixologists have stayed up late creating new Thai-inspired cocktails such as their Sand Dog (B.210), containing Sang Som, triple sec, an iced tea cube and iced tea with lime juice for a long refresher with the kick of rum. Coconut Breeze (B.290) is served in an eye-catching glass embracing a tropical treat of Malibu, fresh pineapple and a pineapple/lime juice, while Frozen Blue (B.250) is another Sang Som delight shaken with vodka and blue curacao syrup with lime juice. Both cocktails are made uber-super cool with the addition of liquid nitrogen to wow and impress (and look fantastic in the photos!) The menu is a sweeping culinary romp (with a twist) through popular Italian dishes and Southeast Asian cuisine. The food is an exciting mélange of everyone’s favourites, but with the Greyhound twist of deconstructing, reinventing,
concocting, conceiving and contriving to make it the most inspired cuisine. In addition to their extensive a la carte menu, there is an exclusive Pattaya branch menu bursting with fish-themed dishes reflecting its seaside location. For instance, the signature local dish (B.320) features an accompanying clear soup plus poached freshlycaught tiger prawns, squid and whiting fish topped with a chilli lime sauce and served on fried rice enhanced with a soft-boiled egg. Blue crab is a speciality and prepared in many diverse recipes including the original Chonburi crab egg chilli dip topped with chunks of crab meat, a garden of fresh vegetables and clear soup to complete the combo (B.250). Another firm favourite are the boiled blood cockles served with a spicy peanut sauce (B.180) or the grilled Thai fish cakes craftily presented on sugar cane skewers and served with pickled vegetables. We started our dinner from the main menu ordering a Fresh Lasagna Salad (B.180) and Seared Scallop Salad (B.490). There are so many soups and salads to choose from. These include Italian Clam and Mussel Soup to Prawn Bisque with Fresh Cream and many more. Meat eaters would be well-served with a variety of diced fillet steak with crisp lettuce and special dressing. While on the subject of sauces and dressings, there is a sauce wizard in this kitchen; there’s spicy tomato salsa, aioli dip—that Mediterranean favourite redolent with garlic and extra virgin olive oil, there’s sweet and sour, peanut, and so many more and they are all exceptional lifting

What else did they tempt us with? Homemade Pate with Cognac and Fresh Green Peppercorns (B.180), a new “Tartine Dip” (B.280) comes with warm bread served with crab rillettes and an unusual sardine dip. For ravioli lovers try these innovative new versions; the first surprise is that they arrive crispy with another great Greyhound salsa and are filled with either velvety spinach and cream or tangy anchovy and clams for that the full umami effect. We were a full contingent of four for our Greyhound experience and were able to try a whole range of dishes. Chef is always conceptualizing on the traditional and giving it that Greyhound twist. One of the latest additions to the new menu is Oceanic Gang (B.450), an intriguing stir-fried gang of mussels, shrimps, squid and clams liberally tossed with extra virgin olive oil, white wine, dried chillies with lemon and rosemary for that final zing. They serve it with toasted garlic brioche, the perfect vehicle for dunking and scooping up all that finger-licking, unctuous olive oil infused with the tastes of the sea. We also tasted their signature Salmon Sashimi in Spicy Hot Sauce (B.200) and it was fantastic. Super tender, sweet sashimi smothered in their excellent hot sauce with the plate big enough for sharing; it was a star dish. Of course we also had to try Greyhound’s Famous Fried Chicken Wings (B.140) that flies out

of the kitchen every few minutes. They have been marinated in tangy fish sauce and then deep-fried to a crispy, crunchy finale; no residue oil on these babies, just super crisp and crusty. So many wonderful dishes, we’re running out of space, but must tell you about a few more. B.160 will buy you the best Fresh Spring Rolls we have tasted in some time. Cooked fresh shrimps, chicken, flavoursome pork skin and various veggies have been wrapped in fresh spring roll skins and served zinging with vibrant flavours. And the sauce? It’s everyone’s favourite, that gooey, savoury, sweet and sour sauce. Still can’t finish without telling you about the waffles. Now alongside the sauce wizard in this kitchen there’s also a waffle wizard. We tried the “original”, crisp yet munchy with lashings of maple syrup melting into the soft butter, topped with a ball of chocolate ice cream. Ummm it was scrumptious. For the real chocolate addicts there’s the Choc Shock Waffle (B.190) which would surely hit the spot. A chocolate chip/cocoa waffle is topped with chocolate sauce and grated flakes and then delivered to your table with the addition of chocolate ice cream. There’s even more waffles to choose from, laden with fresh fruit, tangy berry sauce, cranberries, red crumble; it’s waffles all the way at Greyhound Café. If none of the above take your fancy then you’re a candidate for the DIY Waffle with a choice of three toppings. Choose two flavours of waffle (Original, Red Velvet, or Chocolate) or you could mix them up. Crepes are there, glorious, sticky crepes either the traditional Suzette or a mixed fruit (for only B.90) including peach. Everything is house-made and yes, there’s another dessert wizard here. Cheesecakes, crumbles, the on-trend sea salt caramel drenched cakes and of course Banoffee with its Oreo heart (B.150). There are so many culinary masterpieces to be had at this innovative, trendy eatery. Noodles are top favourites as are the groundbreaking vegetarian dishes and oh, so much more. Then there’s the Chalawan Cave award-winning craft beer, but more about those in a separate article. Prices at Greyhound Café are exceedingly reasonable, the ambiance laid-back and friendly and between the three eating/drinking zones it surely meets the zeitgeist of modern Pattaya. It consistently ranks in the top restaurants of the city and deserves its enviable reputation for serving unswerving quality in an ambiance of contemporary elegance. Chic, stylish and unique, it works hard to maintain its position in Pattaya’s gastro circles. Exclusive culinary (and musical) events take place regularly, especially wine dinners where the skills of their executive chef, Shaun Venter, and his brigade make for a memorable evening. The latest culinary event featured a trio of alcoholic potions paired with a gourmet six-course dinner. The first pouring of the evening featured a most unusual sparkling Sake, Dassai Junmai Daiginjo Happou Nigori. A first for most people gathered at the bar as it most certainly was for us. For an exciting aperitif it fitted the bill perfectly and accompanied by Mussel Ceviche and a Wagyu Yakitori it proved an innovative opening and a portent of what was to come. Once seated in the restaurant the first appetiser was served, a Salmon Mi Cuit. Literally meaning “half-cooked”, it was a gem of a dish. The translucent salmon with its decadent texture had been prepared with a combination of heat and salt to ensure that, although served chilled, this delightful fish was anything but raw. Served on a bed of goat’s cheese and leek risotto plus tiny slivers of beetroot gastrique (prepared in a sweet and sour sauce), it was a heavenly dish.
Just a little more and alas the bottom of my plate appeared; I could have licked it clean! The wine pairing was a New Zealand Matua Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016. This crisp, fresh young wine, from one of our favourite areas of New Zealand, escorted this first course admirably. The next pour was a Rawson’s Retreat Chardonnay 2016 from Australia. A very dry wine with a slight oaky finish it bravely ushered the next course of Spiced Butternut Broth. A deeply comforting broth loaded with coconut cream, chilli oil and lobster dumplings plus an intriguing underlying tang of Thai curry. Kudos to the kitchen for this perfectly executed union of flavours. Moving along, the next dish extolled the extravagance of foie gras. It had been treated to a burnished glaze of miso and attended by pan-fried duck and a selection of vanilla stewed fruit. It was oohing and aahing all the way. I loved every morsel; it was a perfect plate of food and the fig, prune and apricot were especially luscious. I’d buy a barrel of them if I could. Paired with this elegant dish a Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Noir 2011 from Chile an enjoyable wine, quite delicate with a rounded raspberry fruit finish which accompanied the richness of the foie gras quite suitably. Now Mick and I are not particular fans of the fruity sorbets that appear before the main course, but Chef Shaun had veered from convention, turned it on its head and fashioned a palate refresher into a Michelin-
starred event. He had created a balsamic Gazpacho Granita par excellence crowned with a small portion of caviar. The tiny crystals of tomato, cucumber and bell peppers bounced and zinged in the mouth for a complete cleanse of the palate. It was now time for the main event, Australian lamb rack with its culinary cohorts of roast garlic, a truly luscious deep magenta red onion marmalade, it was sticky, sweet and addictive. We have to confess here that we were reaching our satiation point and sadly could not do full justice to that tender, blushing cutlet, but we certainly enjoyed every tasty forkful and together with the rich, fruity Sicilian Merlot (Surya Nero d’Avola Merlot IGT 2014), the course was a massive hit. Having bemoaned the fact we couldn’t squeeze in another morsel, dessert then hit the table. Who in their right mind couldn’t find space for a Baked Alaska? Italian silky meringue had been cloaked with tiramisu ice cream and sweet raspberries and was perfected by a glass of Mars Whisky Iwai which had been aged in bourbon, sherry and wine barrels. Absolute bliss and a spectacular conclusion to an exquisite six-course meal of gastronomic delights. Water is 800 times denser than air, according to a study in the “International Journal of Sports Medicine.” The cushioning effect of the water provides both resistance and cushioning not found when exercising on land. The resistance of the water strengthens and tones muscles and affects more of the body when exercising if the water is chest-deep or higher. Endurance increases more effectively in deep-water aerobics because of the fullbody resistance factor. Due to the resistance of the water, participants in water aerobics expend more energy than participants in a landbased class when the intensity levels are equivalent. Landbased aerobics participants had a higher heart rate than water aerobics participants, according to a study published in the “Journal of Exercise Physiologyonline.” Even with a greater expense of energy, you may not see a significant difference in the amount of weight or fat you lose, according to a study published in the “Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness”. Participants in both the land- and water-based groups lost weight and body fat, and both groups saw a decrease in body measurements and skinfold when the exercises were comparable for intensity, duration and frequency.

The Colorado High Country is a highway cruiser, par excellence. Commanding view forward and huge wing mirrors for rear view. Hey, Speedy Gonzales, watch out! Speed limit is 120 km/h but the Storm can easily do 160-180 km/h. Here the cruise control is needed. Click and set it at 115-120 km/h. Voila! But after a while “Tom Cruise” control is a bit boring. More fun to accelerate/overtake and enjoy the Storm turbocharger sound with fine throttle response. Chevy’s Storm is also loaded with sensors for safe highway cruising: forward collision warning, lane departure alert and tyre pressure monitoring system. The electric power steering has a good feel and feedback almost like a luxury SUV. Kamphaeng Phet and Tak highways provide long straights and fine smooth tarmac. No rain.
Four and a half hours drive and we approach Tak-Mae Sot intersection. Road 105. Only 20 minutes and road under construction. Detours! Yellow warning signs everywhere. No overtaking! Gravel and potholes and then the rain starts as we climb higher. Big 18-wheeler container trucks, left, right and center. Huge boulders in the middle of the road and more detours. Temperature dropping. The road is now muddy as the rain pours down. Visibility low. My wife says, “Let’s go back, please! Make a U-turn....!” Too many trucks behind. Impossible! Carry on. Negotiate the next steep serpentine. More blind bends and gut-wrenching twists. No turning back! But I trust our Chevy High Country Storm heavy duty pickup and engage the 4x4 traction mated to 180 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque. Fog light and headlights on! Wipers, too. On the road side a broken down old Toyota sedan with the hood up. No motorcycles, few passenger cars mostly commercial vehicles and local Tak-Mae Sot buses belching out black smoke of the exhaust. Hundreds of meters below verdant valleys and foggy mountain peaks above. No human habitation. Only the road and more hairpins. Higher elevation. This road is not for the faint-hearted (new driver) especially during the rainy season.
Finally, we arrive at the midway point Doi Muser Hill Tribe Market. The highest elevation. The rain has changed into thick fog with gusts of wind. The temperature drops to 23 degrees Celsius! This busy market is run by the Muser Hill tribe people selling their fresh fruits, veggies and coffee. Outside the road work carries on. Yellow excavators and bulldozers digging and moving earth. After cups of strong Arabica coffee we continue. More detours and then downhill. The sign: LOW GEAR! Here Storm’s Hill Descent Control is needed when the road down steepens. The HDC driving assistant automatically controls vehicle speed on steep downhill gradients. As we finally approach Mae Sot municipality the fog disappears and the temperature rises to 28 degrees Celsius. The first traffic lights and a roundabout. I see passenger cars with Burmese black and white registration plates: Mandalay, Yangon and Naypyidaw heading for serious
shopping at Mega Home, Big C and Robinson’s. We have arrived! Safe and sound. A challenging and memorable drive which Chevrolet Colorado High Country Storm 4x4 has passed with flying colors. Thailand’s 10-Year Economic Cycle is Right on Time! Thailand’s 10-year economic cycle -- which strikes every year ending with the number seven -seems to be right on time…once again! 1987: Yes, it started with America’s Black Monday when the stock market crashed 22.6 percent in just a few days and began a ripple effect that hit Thailand and the entire world. 1997: It was in 1996 that the IMF reported confidently that Thailand’s economy would recover in 1997. That certainly was not the case as George Soros swept across Southeast Asia destroying one nation’s economy after another… including Thailand’s. 2007: The global financial crisis of 2007–2008 is considered by many economists to have been the worst financial calamity since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It began with the 2007 crisis in the subprime mortgage market in the US, and developed into a full-blown international banking crisis with the collapse of the investment bank Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008. Lehman Brothers excessive risktaking helped magnify the global financial crash. Huge financial institutions experienced massive bail-outs; dramatic monetary and fiscal policies were needed to avoid a possible collapse of the entire world financial system. The crisis was devastating. The downturn in the global economy that followed, known as the Great Recession in the United States, gave rise to the European Debt Crisis for countries using the euro, and then the effects of the Great Recession spread across the world. 2017: Aren’t we seeing this very same pattern of incorrect predictions by the IMF again in Southeast Asia? Or have these prognostications by the IMF been deliberate once again in order to
misguide, inasmuch as the IMF had predicted steady growth for Thailand from 2013 through 2018. It was just a few months ago that the IMF projected that Thailand’s inflation would remain around the low end of the tolerance band in 2017–18, amid subdued core inflation. Well here we are in August of 2017 where just recently a reputable publication reported that the nation’s top lender, Bangkok Bank, had been hit by a decline in investment gains. The following statistics are screaming through online news outlets and blogs, and for a very good reason...they are alarming: * Bangkok Bank 2017 Q2 profit 7.17 billion baht vs. 8.3 billion forecast * Kasikorn Bank 2017 Q2 profit down 18 percent, H1 loans up 3.24 percent * Krung Thai Bank 2017 Q2 profit up 2.7 percent, H1 loans down 2.67 percent (Recasts with earnings from other banks) Reuters issued the following account: Major Thai banks reported weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings on Thursday as they booked higher provisions to cover rising bad debt amid a gradual recovery in the country’s economy. The recover y in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy is still relatively fragile as exports and domestic demand remain weak. However, it grew 3.2 percent in the first quarter, its fastest annual pace in three years. Thailand’s largest lender, Bangkok Bank, was also particularly hit by a decline in gains on investments and rising expenses because most of its excess liquidity is invested in low-risk assets such as government bonds. The bank’s second-quarter net profit dropped 10.8 percent from a year earlier to 7.2 billion baht ($205.8 million), lower than the

average forecast of 8.3 billion baht by 11 analysts polled by Reuters. Non-performing loans (NPLs) rose to 3.1 percent of total lending at the end of June versus 2.9 percent end-March, while provisions rose 18 percent from a year earlier, it [Bangkok Bank] said in a statement. Bangkok Bank said gains on investments, of which 59 percent is in government and state enterprise bonds, plunged 98 percent in the second quarter. Its lending grew 2 percent in the first half thanks to the government’s spending and booming tourism, while fourth-ranked Kasikorn Bank posted loan growth of 3.24 percent in the same period. In a separate statement, Kasikorn Bank reported an 18 percent drop in second quarter net profit to 9.43 billion baht, while NPLs rose to 2.89 percent at the end of June from 2.7 percent at the close of 2015. This compared with average 9.97 billion baht forecast by 15 analysts polled by Reuters. K a s i k o r n b a n k’s g a i n o n investments also plunged 84 percent, it said without giving detail. Unlike peers, Krung Thai Bank [KTB], Thailand’s second-largest lender, said its quarterly net profit edged up 2.7 percent from a year earlier due to rising interest income and improving margin. The bank posted net profit of 8.68 billion baht for the April-June quarter, higher than the 7.37 billion baht forecast by 14 analysts polled by Reuters. KTB’s net interest margins rose to 3.28 percent in the second quarter, versus 3.11 percent a year earlier. However, the bank set aside provision of 7.74 billion baht in the second quarter, up 3 percent after its non-performing loans increased to 3.89 percent of lending at end June from 3.7 percent at end March. Well I guess it’s that old light at the end of the tunnel thing...once you hit bottom you can finally stand up and get moving towards recovery. Back in 1997 it took until

Corporate Income Tax
Corporate income tax is a direct tax imposed on a juristic company or partnership carrying on business in Thailand or deriving certain types of income from Thailand. Under the tax code, there are five (5) types of taxable person 1. A company or a juristic partnership established under Thai law 2. A company or a juristic partnership established under foreign law 3. A business operating in a commercial or profitable manner by a foreign government, organization of a foreign government or any other juristic person established under a foreign law 4. Joint venture 5. A foundation or association carrying on revenue-generating business. Companies or juristic partnerships established under Thai law are subject to corporate income tax on worldwide income. On the other hand, a foreign corporation, organized or existing under the laws of any foreign country, is taxed only on income derived from sources within Thailand. In order to receive the tax return, the company must have paid its corporate income tax less than withholding tax. All companies carrying on business in Thailand are required to file their tax returns, together with the tax payment, within 150 days from the closing date of their accounting period. Generally, the accounting period consists of 12 months. However, a newly incorporated company may choose to use the period from its incorporation date to any one date as the first accounting period. If a company wishes to change its accounting period, it must obtain written approval from the director general of the Revenue Department. Any company subject to corporate income tax on net profits is also required to make tax prepayment. These are taxes paid in advance before you actually incur them. A company must estimate its projected income as well as its tax
liability. Half of the estimated tax amount must be paid within two months after the first six months of its accounting period. The prepaid tax is creditable against its annual tax liability. A company or juristic partnership incorporated under foreign laws and not carrying on business in Thailand but receiving assessable income which is paid from or in Thailand shall be liable to pay tax at a flat rate in which the payer shall withhold tax at source at the time of payment. The payer must file the return and make the payment to the Revenue Department within seven days of the following month in which the payment is made. CIT is calculated from the company’s net profit on the accrual basis. A company shall take into account the sum of all revenues less all deductible expenses. Income arising in an accounting period, even though it is not yet received in such
accounting period, shall be included as income for that accounting period. All expenses relating to such income, even though they are not yet paid, shall be included as expenses for such accounting period. As for dividend income, half of the dividends received by Thai companies from any other Thai companies may be excluded from the taxable income. However, the full amount may be excluded from taxable income if the recipient company is listed in the Stock Exchange of Thailand or owns at least 25 percent of the distributing company’s capital interest, provided that the distributing company does not own a direct or indirect capital interest in the recipient company. The exclusion of dividends is applied only if the shares are acquired not less than three months before receiving the dividends and are not disposed of within three months after receiving the dividends.

Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. announced its total sales in the passenger car market for the first half of 2017. Honda still remains in the number one position, with a total of 61,428 units sold during this period. Total sales so far this year are up 14 percent over the same period last year, which enabled Honda to capture 33 percent market share by gaining consumers’ trust and confidence continuously, plus the launches of five new models addressing consumers’ various lifestyles during the first six months of 2017. The five new models Honda introduced during the first half of the year are Honda City, Honda Civic Hatchback, Honda CR-V, Honda Mobilio, and Honda Jazz. All have enjoyed tremendous customer feedback since their launch. For example, the subcompact Honda City had the highest sales in its segment with a total booking of over 22,000 units. Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd. announced business results for the first half of 2017. With four new models launched since the start of the year, Mazda sold a total of 24,000 vehicles during the first six months, registering a 13 percent growth. With extremely high customer confidence in the new SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics technology, Mazda is moving ahead in upgrading its showroom and service center countrywide with the new Mazda Corporate Identity
(MCI) and MAZDA ACTIV SERVICE (MAS) in order to prepare for expected growth. The company will launch two more new models during the end of the year, and raised its sales projection to 51,000 units, equivalent to 20 percent growth compared to 2016. Chanchai Trakarnudomsuk, president of Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., said the automobile market rebounded during the first half of 2017, with many auto makers introducing new models and offering special sales promotions to stimulate demand. “It is easier to own a vehicle thanks to low down payment and interest rates, as well as free insurance and maintenance. Customers have more choices, and the competition in the market is extreme. The market has been high active since the end of last year to the second quarter of 2017, and we can see and trend of gradual growth. The automobile market has been growing since January and it is expected that the total market would reach 820,000 units this year. Mazda has raised its annual
sales target from the original 50,000 units to 51,000 Units, with growth increasing from 18 percent to 20 percent,” he said. The Mazda2 was the top-selling model with 14,284 units, followed by the BT-50 PRO pickup with 3,099 units, Mazda3 with 2,677 units, Mazda CX-3 with 2,219 units, Mazda CX-5 with 1,604 units, and 10 units of the Mazda MX-5 roadster. “Mazda has firmly secured the No.3 position in the passenger car market, and we believe that the Thai economy has passed its most difficult point. All engines are running now and we are moving ahead. We expect that the total automobile market will reach 820,000 units this year," said Chanchai, adding Thailand’s economic recovery stems from several factors. “They include the growth in rice exports and other agricultural products. The tourism and services sector is also growing continuously. And while agricultural products are fetching higher prices, other contributing factors include government economic stimulus measures for those with low income, such as promoting innovative processing to increase product value, support for SMEs, government investment in mega infrastructure projects, increased foreign investment and domestic demand for consumer products. Automobiles have become a necessity and during the first six months of this year, total auto sales grew as expected, with 410,000 units posing 11 percent increase.” Apart from growing sales, Mazda is also determined in adjusting its image and expanding its sales and service network all across the country under the new Mazda Corporate Identity (MCI) concept, in order to prepare for expected growth. It will also create a good experience for customers when they experience the new Mazda. A total of 147 Mazda outlets will go through MCI improvement within 2019 while the network will be increased to 20 showrooms. Chanchai added that Mazda is confident in the Thai economy, which has a better trend and direction than last year.

Thailand welcomes new Turkish Airlines flights to Phuket The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) welcomed the launch of new Turkish Airlines flights to Phuket. Phuket, one of the world’s best known beach destinations with a number of award-winning beaches voted for by tourists, will host the airline’s four direct flights per week from Istanbul. Pataraporn Sithivanich, TAT executive director for Europe, Africa and the Middle East Region said, “This new Istanbul-Phuket service is part of the collaboration between TAT and Turkish Airlines to meet the growing demand for travel to Thailand from holiday-makers from Turkey, Europe and Latin America. In addition, 2018 marks 60 years of
Thai-Turkish relations, and TAT is planning to organise cultural and tourism activities in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Thailand.” Turkish Airlines inaugurated its Istanbul-Phuket route on July 17 with the first flight carrying 210 passengers, including 20 members of the media from Turkey. Youth Focus A night to remember… M.I.S. Prom! by Sarah Daniels
Saturday, July 8 marked the annual Mooltripakdee International School Prom. Students from Middle School were invited to celebrate the end of term and Year 9 students celebrated graduating from Middle School into Year 10, secondary education. The elaborate evening consisted of a catered dinner, music performances, a fashion show, student speeches, and ultimately the crowning of King and Queen of the prom. The attending students also took part in karaoke and dancing. A fun-filled night of fun was had by all. Middle School Math teacher Miss Morgan, who attended the evening of celebrations, said, ”It was a great turn out, the students looked fantastic! It was a great to see the students enjoying themselves, dancing and singing. The prom was a huge success.” Victoria, from Year 9, has been attending M.I.S since she was two years old. She also acknowledged how successful the evening was. She commented that over the years she has seen so many positive changes and growth occurring at M.I.S and the prom really encapsulated the positive developments at school. She added, “It was a great prom, everyone was very happy. The Key Stage three building, where Prom took place, was beautifully decorated and it really was a team effort. A lot of effort went onto the Prom and it was just great. The thing I love about M.I.S is that the staff and students are so friendly”. In a tightly-fought contest, Tiger just pipped Cobra to the post to become House champions for 2016-17. Their reward was a special lunch and then an afternoon packed with activities, including a bouncy castle, volleyball, golf and a water slide. GIS is based in Ban Chang, near Pattaya. Robert Taylor bags his uncle’s bride Quentin Durward not too serious
The Adventures of Quentin Durward in 1955 was Robert Taylor’s third offering in the trio of movies which also included Ivanhoe and Knights of the Round Table, all made in MGM’s British studios. For more than 30 years Taylor remained one of the studio’s principal leading men, usually playing against glamorous leading ladies. In this case it’s Kay Kendall who was to die prematurely just a few years
later. Billed as a swashbuckler, there isn’t so much action in Quentin Durward compared with, say, Ivanhoe a couple of years previously. Filmed on location in the British and French countryside, the story is set in fifteenth century France. It’s an era, according to the blurb, when the introduction of gunpowder was overturning the old ideas of chivalry and honour. Quentin Durward
(Robert Taylor) is instructed by his aged uncle the Duke of Crawford (played by Ernest Thesiger in one of his final film roles) to go to France and prepare the way for a dynastic marriage between the Duke and the Countess of Marcroy (Kay Kendall). Taylor is impoverished and doesn’t have any real choice in the matter of obeying his uncle. The Countess is none too pleased to be forced into marriage with an old Scottish baron. “His left hand may be on the Scottish throne,” she sighs, “but his right is
on the graveyard wall”. So she slips away from her socalled protector The Duke of Burgundy (Alec Clunes), who has arranged the match, to seek shelter in the court of the French king Louis XI (Robert Morley). But she is forced to flee again upon learning that the crafty Louis is planning to betray her once again. The dashing Durward naturally foils the plot, falls in love with the Countess and marries her on hearing the glad tidings that his uncle in Scotland has passed away at last. The plot is somewhat unbelievable at this point though, to be fair, it does mirror the story line in Sir Walter Scott’s original novel. Actually it is Robert Morley who steals the picture as the jovial but unscrupulous monarch who has absolutely no loyalties except to himself and to France which, at the time, was in danger of being dismembered or even overrun by the dastardly English who still held a few cities from
the long drawn out Hundred Years War. Morley trusts only his barber played by Wilfrid Hyde White with his usual aplomb and wit. “If a monarch must trust somebody,” comments Louis XI, “let it be the man who daily presses a razor against his throat.” But Wilfrid is far more than a barber, acting also as a gobetween or messenger for whatever scheme his master currently has in mind. Director Richard Thorpe, by now an old hand at costume dramas, unusually for him throws in a dash of humour, making fun of the so-called Scottish trait of miserliness personified by Ernest Thesiger who is actually more interested in his future bride’s income than in her famed good looks. He also makes the dialogues between Louis and his barber very amusing as they consider what deviance may next serve king and country best. “Oh, do get on with the shaving!” pines Louis at one point.
The action is low key with very duelling or fight scenes and emphasis on the matlock rifle revolution whose fire throughout the movie seems to miss everybody aimed at. But there is an impressive final sword fight on the belfy ropes between a double for Taylor and the chief villain which makes a fitting conclusion. Robert Taylor made eight films with director Richard Thorpe, four prior to Quentin Durward and including The Crowd Roars (1938), Ivanhoe (1952), All The Brothers Were Valiant (1953) and Knights of the Round Table (1953). By the mid fifties it was becoming clear that Robert Taylor’s swashbuckling days were over as the years clocked on and his health began to deteriorate. Taylor continued to make movies almost until his death from lung cancer in 1969, but Quentin Durward was his last medieval epic or historical costume drama.

Popular Conspiracy Theories Many famous people have claimed to see a UFO but the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan, actually saw two during an earlier stint as governor of California. The first happened when Reagan went to a celebrity party in 1970 but stepped outside for a breath of air. Appearing an hour later, Reagan told how he and Nancy had spotted the UFO whilst travelling along
the coastal road to Los Angeles. Fellow party guest Lucille Ball in her autobiography “Lucy in the Afternoon” wrote that she had often wondered if Reagan would ever have risen to be president if people knew he had claimed to see the UFO. 2. South of Tokyo, Japan With Japan currently on many travellers’ bucket lists, two cities south of Tokyo are well worth making time for. Yokohama is just a 20-minute train journey from the capital and packs considerable appeal with its bayside location, eclectic architecture, microbreweries and tasty cuisine. Less than an hour from Tokyo, classy seaside town Kamakura is known for its surfing scene, but also offers a tempting selection of relaxed cafes and restaurants.
6. Takayama, Japan The time to treasure Takayama is now. Secluded in the mountainous Hida region of central Japan, Takayama is a place where Japanese history and tradition flourish in the 21st century. Northern Kerala, India Northern Kerala has long been the underrated half of the state, concealing its backwater charms and emerging slowly like a butterfly from a chrysalis. 2017 marks India’s 70th year of independence and the opening of a new international airport in Kannur – Kerala’s largest – which will provide an easy introduction to the north. The beaches around Kannur, Thottada and Bekal are pristine.
7. Xi’an, China Xi’an’s diverse heritage is supreme. And then there’s the biggie: the Army of Terracotta Warriors, celebrating 30 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Xi’an is vast, but a relaxed tempo reigns and recent openings have boosted an already superb accommodation market; throw in a crop of new bars and cafes plus the 72-hour visafree policy and there’s never been a better time to visit.
4. Keong Saik Road, Singapore Once a crime-riddled red-light district, Keong Saik Road has reinvented itself to become the poster-child for hip “New Singapore”. Behind the beautiful colonial and art-deco buildings you’ll discover the best of Singapore’s famed dining scene—fabulous rooftop views and super-slick cocktail bars draw a trendy crowd, and you can sleep it all off in a boutique hotel room.

Sri Lanka’s Hill Country Sri Lanka may be “so hot right now”, but Lonely Planet recommends getting ahead of (and away from) the pack by taking “a scenic train to Sri Lanka’s idyllic Hill Country for a wonderfully temperate escape from the nation's humid coasts. 5. Astana, Kazakhstan

President Reagan’s Little Green Men
bureau chief of the Wall Street Journal, that he had seen a strange, white light to the rear of the plane which suddenly darted upwards into the sky. Confirmation was provided by the pilot colonel Bill Paynter who also saw the strange light. However, no report was filed as Reagan said he did not want to be considered a nut case. When president, Reagan’s first summit was with Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva who was taken aback when the American asked him if he would help out - whenever the United States was attacked from outer space. The general secretary of the communist party said that he would so assist, as a smile of relief spread across Reagan’s face. In 1987 Reagan told the United Nations that nobody should forget that the differences between mankind would disappear in the face of an alien attack. Moreover, author Darwin Potter said that Reagan told a friend he had seen a UFO no less than three times. The president supposedly said, “I just know it. They have selected a desert some place in the West to make
their landing.” In 2007 a document surfaced which was allegedly an intelligence briefing given to Reagan at Camp David. It included a claim that president Nixon had shown Reagan an object taken from the crashed UFO at Roswell where five dead extra-terrestrial beings and one live one were recovered in 1947. Claims such as this were the basis of several movies such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind which were supposedly made with the cooperation of the US air forces. Hollywood filmmaker Jamie Shandera said that Steven Spielberg told him that, at the end of a private screening of ET – The ExtraTerrestrial, Reagan had claimed, “You know there aren’t really six people in this room who really know how true to life that movie really is.” Reagan’s opponent in the 1980 presidential election, Jimmy Carter, saw a UFO in 1969: a large glowing object which changed colour. He said at the time, “It was the most devilish of all the stuff I have ever seen.” But he said later his memory of the incident was vague and that he believed it
was an experimental aircraft from a nearby basis. The Russian newspaper Pravda reported in 1948 that president Truman called his assistant in the Oval Office and ordered him to report to him every three months about UFO sightings. Once he even asked for an investigation into an object he sighted through the window in his office in Washington. Pravda also stated it had documentary evidence that Dwight Eisenhower saw a UFO in 1952 aboard an aircraft carrier. It hovered 100 feet away before flying away to Eisenhower’s consternation. So what are we to make of all his talk of American presidents seeing UFOs in the sky? Some say that it’s all preparatory talk to forewarn people that we are indeed at
high risk of being invaded by beings from outer space. After all, the prophets of doom can never be proved wrong – disaster has not happened yet but will sometime in the future. Another theory, popularized by David Icke, is that the theories are bullshit but are designed to prepare us all for the imposition of a worldwide police state. Eicke says that it just can’t be a coincidence that eight US presidents and various celebrities including Queen Elizabeth II are all part of the conspiracy. On the other hand, it’s also possible that leaders like President George Bush Margaret Thatcher are, or were, shape-lifting reptilian aliens who ate human beings in secret dessert sessions. That certainly gives new meaning to the expression The Iron Lady.

The deadly Smedley back on track! Silky Oaks – Stableford – White Tees More trials and tribulations at Rayong Green Valley forced us to make a shift over to Silky Oaks at the last minute. We were informed the course was closed, yet some of our group checked in and played there. Oh well, nobody died and Peter LeNoury still had a great round at Green Valley with a 42 on the card, but we were playing Silky Oaks for Pete’s sake!
Winner Barry Elphick and Brian Parish Pattavia - St Eventhough the Tropical golfers were just at Pattavia last week, we went back because well, we like Pattavia! Actually it was more complicated than that, but a scheduling mixup forced us to find another course quick, and after last time Pattavia was high on the list for a revisit. 950 baht green fee including a coupon for the restaurant is hard to beat with a five-iron! A lucky 13 Tropical golfers headed out for an earlier-than-usual tee time. Pattavia remains in good to excellent condition, with the lean to excellent. Some people moan about the tough greens, but as we said before, it’s not the hardest layout and that keeps the course, umm... interesting. Scores were tightly grouped after this round, and everyone waited on the edge of their seats to see how it would all finish. Those with
good scores were tight lipped. There were also the popular “Best Nines” scores up for grabs. When you're hot you're hot, and Barry Elphick (c/h 27) grabbed the top spot for the second time in a row with an excellent 38 points. It’s a good thing Barry is so photogenic, right? Next came a familiar name in Brian Parish (12) who decided he didn't want to stay out of the headlines for more than a week by taking second place with 37 points. The third place honors went to Mick Coghlan (25) with 36 points, followed by Landis Brooks (9) who beat two others on count-back at the 34 point mark. Good golf everyone. The best half rounds of golf for non-winners went to Mashi Kaneta and Tom Herrington. Fairways and greens to all.

Plutaluang Despite the overnight and continuing wet weather, a dozen golfers showed up to take on the Big Navy’s north and west courses. Mr. (seriously hung over) Steven Younger, who retired at 2 o’clock in the morning following cessation of his late
night frivolities where he abstained from drinking any Sangsom (fortunately for all in his company as it’s his fighting rum!), electing instead to partake in way to many Jack Daniels, was very quiet on the bus ride to the course. He only stirred to open the window beside him and have a large expectoration!

Thomas continues her good golf for second place at the 37 point mark. Forever young Masao Ishikawa had no trouble with those whippersnappers (he always walks the course) and the 74 year old wins the day with an amazing 40 point round. You may see Ishi at the range as he is a regular there and has a committed warm up and practice regimen he adheres to. Seems to be working! Credit also goes to Bob Catlow taking the Caddy Smile near pin.

and the quick trip out got our first group off the first tee at 9:30 am. The kind weather saw some decent scoring, but nothing off the charts. Butch Furneaux was the hero last week but today, just the near pin. Bob Catlow had a surprise with only a 31 to get him third place. Fresh off the boat from China, our buddy Lou Ventimiglia is back in town and shoots his handicap for second place. Butch is heading back to Oz by the time you read this, so thanks to him and brother Greg for joining up with us this past month. I guess he is getting ready for brother Gary arriving next week, but Capt. Phil is finding his form once again.A single point ahead of Mr. Ventimiglia, Phil was the only one to better his handicap in a small field here today. We had a special Sunday event and took a vanload of golfers up to the new Siam Waterside golf training grounds for a twohour session. The facilities were outstanding, even at this soft opening but it was great to hit off real grass and shower there afterwards. Thanks to partner John McHugh for organizing this inaugural event and please see our facebook page for the next visit. We will be doing this every weekend and have space for 10 golfers so you are welcome to come out with us and transport is just 200 baht. It was just a short 24 minute drive to Parichat this morning for Capt. Phil and his band of merry men. This is one of the youngest courses in the Pattaya area and sits just two clicks past the Pattaya C.C. on the 331. Condition of the course was very good (as usual) and the skies above were overcast but dry. The location makes this a Friday favourite and our regulars are getting used to the idiosyncrasies of this layout. They are doing a 1,200 baht promo that includes buggy so that was the deal maker here.There was a decent turnout of 16 blokes today Stu Rifkin, feeling sorry for Steve, generously offered him one of his ice cold San Miguel beers, as a hair of the old dog, which immediately caused the window to open again and dry retching could be heard! With the weather forecast to clear, we teed off slightly earlier than our booking time under cloudy skies and cool conditions which continued throughout the day. There was hardly any carry
on the fairways so we elected to use the social players yellow tees, which proved appropriate as only a few players beat their handicap. Considering recent rains, the course was in good nick with the greens running true. The shorter play coupled with the physically induced relaxing state that Steve Younger found himself in, produced a fantastic round of golf and one of his “best scores in Thailand”, he was later heard to remark. With 44 points off his 14 handicap he blitzed the field and won the day easily. Alex Field (18) and Stu Rifkin (14), both playing in the group with today’s winner, tried in vain to capture the mystique that had a hold of Steve and accordingly partook in many of the very affordable chilled Leo beers available at all drink stops, however, they could only manage a creditable 37 points apiece. This was enough for Alex to take out second spot

Bunker boys golf Plutaluang (Navy) Course (white tees) The first game of a new week was at Plutaluang course, not a favourite of many due to the coarse grass, however, the north and west nines which we were allocated are enjoyable to play and a good challenge. One of our members, Trevor Priestly, had one of those days. He went directly from check in to the first tee minus clubs or caddie and had to return when it was pointed out to him that he needed to provide his green and caddie receipts to the marshal, so his playing partners waited patiently for some time. Eventually, the second group played through and waited on the fourth tee for his group to catch up and play through. This was not the end of Trevor's travails as he lost control of his card in the wind on the fourth tee and had to fish it out of the lake. He did, however, have a moment in the sun when he holed a 30-foot putt for a birdie and achieved a second placing with a score of 33 points. Third place went to Robbie Watts on 31 points, at this stage Robbie seems to have an unassailable lead in golfer of the month competition, he also got a near pin. Winner on the day, despite about 40 putts, was Michael Brett with 34 points, also taking three near pins; who knows what his score could have been if only he could putt? Results: 1st - Mike Brett (15) 34 points 2nd - Trevor Priestly (19) 33 points 3rd - Robbie Watts (7) 31 points Near pins: Mike Brett (3), Jimmy Carr. Burapha (blue tees) With all this wet weather, turnouts are low and the courses are playing long as there is no run on the ball. This did not deter the brave souls who travelled up to one of the best courses in the area. The course was in its usual impeccable form with well prepared greens, tees and bunkers. The cream always rises to the top and Les Cobban came home in a respectable 33 pts to win the day from new visitor Stuart Brown. A long time member of Bunker boys, Alan Freeman just won the Northamptonshire County Seniors and is now representing that county in the UK County Seniors Trophy in Scotland in August. We all wish him success in this tournament.

Treasure Hill (yellow tees) Bright sunny skies with high wispy cloud greeted golfers for the last game of the week at Treasure Hill. In light of recent heavy rain, it was surprising to find that the course was dry enough for carts to be allowed on the fairways. After three holes our numbers were reduced by one with the retirement of Tony Robbins who succumbed to a nagging shoulder injury; we wish Tony a speedy recovery. I believe physiotherapy treatment is already underway, so we hope to see him back on the course soon. Robby Watts, who is enjoying a purple patch in form this month, dominated the round with a fine 37 off a handicap of seven. Long straight drives and pin point accurate approach shots more than made up for his sometimes suspect putting. Second place went to Michael Brett who returned a lowly 32 points, again another to struggle with the flat stick, third place went to Takeshi Hakozaki who on his day is capable of shooting a great score. Jimmy Carr and Takeshi Hakozaki took a near pin each with Michael Brett taking two. Month, and we've got a pretty close race going on. Getting an early start 14 Tropicals headed north. Bangpakong – add spaces where you want as signs have various spellings – was in its usual excellent condition. It’s an easy walking course, and if that wasn't enough to make the drive worthwhile

they presented us with 100 baht vouchers to spend on the course. It was also a rare umbrella-less day as they were needed neither for sun nor rain. Pure pleasure! After being told it was cart path only this day we invoked “lift and clean” rules, but it was rarely needed, and the fairways are so nice that doing so rarely improved your lie. Bangpakong is a scoring course and all winners beat handicap, but one player took the rest to school on that topic and his name was not Brian! Gathering back at BJ's Lodge it was clear no countback would be needed to crown the winner. Barry Elphick (c/h 27) was the clear leader with 42 points! Way to take advantage of the conditions, Barry. Fine scoring. Next up came Graham “Buckers” Buckingham (28) with an enviable 39 points. The final calls went to Tom Herrington (17) beating Takeshi Hakozaki (12) at the 37 point mark. Remember: The only important shot is the next one.
Greenwood Well it was to be 13 eager starters on the bus up the highway to tackle Greenwood CC Golf Course. We took advantage of the vouchers on offer. It’s good to see that the courses are offering better prices as numbers are down and seasons (high and low) are not different. We played B and C nines from the yellow tees. Although at 6,100 yards, a little short for some, and as always the tricky par 5’s sorted most out. Scores were good on the day but this is a course that sorts out a lot of golfers. The course was in good nick although we needed to play pick clean and place as the course did have some water in places. The greens were playing true. Weather was also good to us though we would have welcomed a bit of a breeze as it got hotter later in the day. With only the one division, it was Mashi that came up trumps returning with a tidy 37 points. He finished two shots clear of a bottle neck of three players fighting it out for two podium places. Getting the nod was Glenn Smith with Mike Johns taking third. Paul Smith was the unlucky golfer. PSC Tropical golf from BJ's by Derek Brook Pattana (Stableford) The question was would we get wet or not? With the weather of late and the promise of more rain in the area, the chances were that we would get wet and we all remembered the fact that of all the courses we play this is the one we have been rained off most. In fact we got to know the rest stops here as we spend a lot of time in them as the rain pours down, but hope is always with the golfer. A good drive up there was indeed noted as Dick told us the ‘Bumpy, Bumpy’ road has been repaired and is useable again. In fact it’s like it was some years ago and cut the drive time. On arrival the dreaded words were uttered by the course, ‘Carts on the Path Only’, as after several days of rain the course was very wet; such is life. So a quick change and we rushed to our early 9 AM tee time. With a major competition scheduled, we had to be finished on the C nine by noon, and who knows what could happen? As it happens, we had a clear run and were onto the A nine in good time. As expected, the course was wet. We were a bit worried
Flight winners when it started to rain, but it was light and soon stopped and with the overcast day the weather was ideal for a fine round. The course itself was, well wet, and with no carts on the fairways we golden oldies did a lot of walking and got wet feet. The fairways were soggy and the rough difficult to get out of, however, the greens were fast and true. Happy days. Soon over, it was a quick shower and back to BJ’s nice and early then into the results. In the A flight, 0 to 15,
the winner was Landis Brooks with 38 points ahead of Mashi Kaneta in second with 37 points and Brian Parish in third with 35 points. In the B flight the winner was Dick Warberg with 37 points ahead of Mick Coghlan in second with 35 points and Graham Buckingham in third with 34 points. Best front nine was Takeshi Hakozaki with 18 points; best back nine was Mike Johns with 18 points. With results over, it was time to try some of BJ’s fine food and drink. T.T.F.N.

You & Your Pets Coping with Flea Season It’s flea season again. Not that the little buggers don’t infest pets and homes year-round, but this time of year is particularly problematic. And your pet’s warm, furry coat and nourishing blood supply are a flea’s dream home. Before making an all-out assault on the critters—and needlessly spending time and money, determine that your cat or dog does, indeed, play host to fleas. Watch for signs of repeated itching and scratching, chewing on their skin, or restlessness. Inspect your pet’s fur for any signs of movement—like tiny bugs bouncing off his coat or dark specs that may well be egg deposits. Comb your best friend with a finetoothed metal flea comb from head to tail several times a day and look for adult fleas and their eggs that you might skim off. Then dip the comb in a mixture of water and liquid dish detergent to kill the fleas. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day. Those can roll right off your pet and onto your floor, couch, or comforter. Give them the chance to hatch, and you'll have a
full-blown flea infestation on your hands. Protect your pet and your home beginning with a flea barrier to prevent these tiny pests from settling in. First, ask your veterinarian about spot-on treatments, which are safer, more convenient, and more effective than traditional dusts, shampoos, and sprays. Ask where on your dog or cat to put the product, how much to apply, and how often to use it. If you opt for a flea collar, pills, or shampoo, be sure to follow the directions carefully. Don’t use products for adult cats on kittens; never use dog products on cats, and do not touch treated areas until they’re dry. Next, deflea your home. Vacuum everything—from upholstered furniture and bedding to cracks in the floors and along baseboards. Then replace the vacuum bag or wash the canister in warm, soapy water. Wash or replace your pet’s bedding. You might also consider decontaminating your home using a flea spray, which is better than flea

These lovely kittens have just been rescued from our local temple along with their mum Lucy. The little ones are now about 6 weeks old so by the time you read this article, they can go to new homes: there are one girl and two boys.

This lovely mum was rescued from our local temple after someone dumped her and her babies there. She is still feeding her kittens at the moment but, in a few weeks’ time, we will get her neutered ready to go to a new home.

This happy fellow was born on Christmas day so he is nearly 6 months old now. It is always harder to find homes for bigger kittens but, as you can see, he is a typical naughty boy. On this occasion we found him in a waste paper bin, but it's is not unusual to find him asleep even in the sink.

Persin and nightshade foods
Avocados contain persin which is toxic to dogs. Persin is found in the fruit as well as the seed, leaves and bark of avocados. Keep all parts of the avocado from your dog's reach, as well as any foods that contain avocado. Tomatoes and potatoes are part of the toxic "nightshade" family of plants containing glycoalkaloids and are poisonous to dogs. Green tomatoes are especially poisonous. Dogs can eat cooked potatoes, but no raw potatoes or potatoes with sprouts or green on them.
