U-Tapao Airport delayed The full-scale launch of Bangkok’s third airport designate has been put on hold again. U-Tapao RayongPattaya International Airport is still suffering teething problems with its 1.7-billion baht expansion originally slated to open last month. The delay is said to be a combination of unfinished autobridges, insufficient public toilets and concerns that domestic and international passengers are not sufficiently separated for immigration and customs purposes. H owe ve r , w h i l s t t h e improvements are ongoing, the new passenger terminal of 20,000 sqm with its supporting facilities is sufficient to handle the relatively small number of passengers arriving and departing. The airport last year handled 710,000 passengers, mostly using Air Asia, and the total for this calendar year is expected to be 1.2 million. The U-Tapao Airport authority confirms that the delayed features will be fully operational by November this year.

The Thai government is keen to turn the Marine-owned complex into a commercial hub to serve as Bangkok’s third airport after Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang, both of which are suffering from overcrowding. U-Tapao is about a 30-minute drive from Pattaya and is in fact nearer to the centre of Bangkok than one of Japan’s premier airports is to Tokyo. Future development is expected to raise the total capacity to 15 million passengers a year,

but that ambitious target would require the building of a second 3,500-metre runway and a second terminal. The development would go hand in hand with the development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) which would extend up to the Myanmar Dawei seaport area. Among economic activities planned for the EEC are aviation-related industries as well as tourism. U-Tapao is less than an hour away by car from Laem Chabang Port

which integrates Thailand’s largest cruise facilities. U-Tapao Airport was a major military base for the US Air Force during the Vietnamese War. False crime reported

A veterinary clinic on Third Road caught fire when a burning cigarette was discarded in the building. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames after several of minutes. No one was injured.

Police caught a man who falsely reported that he was a victim of a motorbike snatching. The man, Manop To-on, went to police station to report that two men on a bike snatched his bag containing 20,000 baht cash, ATM cards and ID. When police reviewed CCTV footage, they found that no crime had been committed, so they arrested Manop for falsely reporting a crime.

Three men rob phone from youth

Four Thai tourists from Bangkok were electrocuted while in Jacuzzi in a resort on Pratumnak Road. The victims were rushed to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. Police investigators found that the Jacuzzi had a big crack allowing water to reach electric wiring. The resortâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s caretaker said that the Malaysian owner of the room was away and offered to waive the rent as compensation. The victims are demanding payment of medical bills as well.

Three unidentified men on a motorbike attacked and robbed 17-year old Nam Nopputhit of a bag and mobile phone on Pratumnak Road. The youth said the trio used a knife in the attack, snatched his property, and then fled. Nam sustained injuries to his face and hand and was taken to the hospital.

Ladyboys snatch phone

Two ladyboys snatched a mobile phone from a Chinese tourist on Pattaya Klang. Cho Ieok told police that he was walking from his hotel when two katoey offered companionship. When he rejected them, they slyly removed his mobile phone worth 24,000 baht, he later noticed.

Security guards apprehended a Russian national suspected of damaging a condo building on Soi Watboon. According witnesses, the culprit was identified as Siegrist Ernst and was apparently drunk. Ernst reported went into the building, opened emergency water valves on each floor, and flooded nearby condo units. At the same time, he reportedly used a knife to cut cables in the corridors. On arrival, police determined that Ernst also was a suspect caught that morning and sent to the hospital due to mental illness. This time he was arrested and charged

The National Peace Corp together with Pattaya Public Health Bureau checked the beach area to determine the amount of space used by umbrellas and beach chairs. An ordinance was issued August 15 restricting beach vendors to occupy only 9 X 7 meters five days a week; none on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Pattaya has 118 beach vendors.

Iranian woman Police investigate caught shoplifting jewelry company

Iranian Mina Sawed Canada was caught by Best Supermarket staff shoplifting six bottles of nail polish worth 904 baht. She was taken to the police station. The shop owner said that she had seen Canada roaming around the supermarket for several days, looking suspicious. So the staff was watching her closely as she put the nail polish in her bag.

In response to numerous online complaints from Chinese tourists, Police visited a major jewelry store in North Pattaya to determine if it was selling fake Thai silk. One disgruntled shopper said she bought Thai silk products worth 4,000 Chinese yuan. When she returned to China she learned that the products were synthetic materials. The North Pattaya store insisted that they did not sell those items.

News Pattaya Klang underpass opens

Finally, after months of waiting, the Pattaya Klang underpass was officially opened by city and other government officials last week. The ceremony was led by Pattaya Mayor Pol. Maj. Gen. Anan Charoenchasri, Chonburi Governor Pakaratorn Tienchai and Deputy Minister of Transport Akom Termpittayapisit. It is hoped that the 837-million-baht project will help ease traffic along Sukhumvit Road.

Royal Garuda installed at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya

Dr. Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Bangkok Dusit Medical Services PCL (BDMS) led the Royal Garuda Installation Ceremony at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. The ceremony was attended by BDMS and hospital executives as well as honored guests, doctors and staff. The Royal Garuda (5 meter tall, 4.5 meter wide, 700 kilograms in weight) was awarded to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya by His Royal Highness, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. “Follow the King’s Philosophy toward sustainable tourism” project was officially introduced with the cooperation of Tourism Authority of Thailand and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to create sustainability in tourism by applying His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s principles of understanding, approaching, and developing to create the sustainability in tourism of Thailand especially from experiences in local communities. Yutthasak Supphasorn, Tourism Authority of Thailand, stated that “In early 2017, TAT applied the idea of “Local Experience” in the marketing of tourism which resulted in the increase of both Thai and foreign tourists traveling to many provinces. There’s a tendency for this to gradually expand. In addition, the government has the policy for the agencies to apply the SEP (Sufficiency Economy Philosophy) or the King’s Philosophy to form the economic foundation for

SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Thus, TAT applies the King’s Philosophy in managing the tourist areas by focusing on the community tourism for sustainable growth.” Nadia Rasheed, the management representative of United Nations Development Program in Asia and Pacific Regions said, “We are very honored to cooperate with TAT. Miss and Mrs. India Asia Pacific named

The Miss and Mrs. India Asia Pacific 2017 grand finale was held in Bann Sukawadee. Winners were Manasa Jonnalagadar, Miss India Asia Pacific 2017, and Sharabonti Assam, Mrs. India Asia Pacific 2017. Both received a 100,000 baht cash prize. Some 22 ladies from Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and India, competed for the crown. The winners will compete in South Africa for the world titles.

EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY ABLE THE DISABLED FOUNDATION, HORSESHOE POINT PATTAYA Volunteers needed Able the Disabled Foundation (ADF) Thailand is a foundation that provides therapy riding for special needs children. A horse’s movement is therapeutic and improves the child’s balance, coordination, behavior and muscle tone, along with confidence and self-esteem. The warmth of the horse’s body and rhythmic gait relaxes spastic muscles and stimulates muscular development. The horse’s movement naturally in walk simulates the movement of the human walk. ADF Thailand relies heavily on volunteers for its operation, and community support for its funding. There is a constant need for motivated, cheerful and reliable people to help. It is not necessary to know anything about horses, or disabled children, to make a big difference in the lives of these riders. ADF teaches its volunteers what they need to know in order to walk alongside a rider or lead a pony. The classes are held at Horseshoe Point on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10 am to 12 pm. Centra by Centara Maris Resort Jomtien led by Chaiphun Thongsuthum, general manager, and Centara Hotels and Resorts Pattaya in cooperation with Thai Red Cross Chonburi organized a blood donation drive on Mother’s Day at Maris 2 to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. HIV and LGBT Heroes set to shine at new Asia-Pacific Community Service Awards

The work of HIV and LGBT community heroes from across Asia and the Pacific is set to be honoured at a special event in Bangkok in November, with organisers of the first ever HERO Awards currently seeking nominations from community members across the region. Standing for HIV, Equality and Rights, the HERO Awards is a gala event which acknowledges outstanding service to the HIV response in Asia and the Pacific, and to the region’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Taking place on Sunday, November 12 at the Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel, the Awards is a special inaugural event that has been organised to coincide with the tenth anniversary commemorations of APCOM, a leading regional HIV and LGBT community network.The event will also raise much needed funds for

APCOM’s vital work in relation to HIV education, prevention, treatment, care and support, and human rights. The Awards are also being supported by several other regional HIV a n d LG B T c o m m u n i t y networks including the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN), the Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (APN+), and the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association in Asia (ILGA Asia). UNAIDS is also supporting the event. Brunch is the new buzzword at Pattaya’s InterContinental and specifically at their Elements Restaurant. This most elegant fivestar hotel is perched atop the headland called Khao Phra Tamnak, one of the most tranquil spots along this stretch of coastline with panoramic views out across the neighbouring islands, mountains and ocean. The start date for this weekly Sunday gourmet spread was 13th of August and the neighbourhood’s savviest brunchophiles and style setters were already on the radar. Elements Restaurant offers al fresco seating on the spacious terrace overlooking the gardens and ocean beyond or cool and comfortable settled inside the well-dressed restaurant. The staff are a happy, friendly team efficiently removing discarded plates and readily anticipating the need for more cutlery and utensils. The abundance of gourmet items is astonishing – so take your time, wander through the various food stations making sure you don’t miss a gastronomic opportunity to try something different or to make your own individual pairing of dishes. The ambiance is laidback, so sit back, enjoy the music from the talented duo, Stage Lights, and relax; this is Sunday brunch.

In our opinion, there is no better way to start a leisurely lunch (or any meal) than with a plate of briny bivalves. With this in mind we made our way over to the raw bar where a sea of France’s Fine de Claire oysters lay tantalizingly on their icy beds. A small spoonful of that classic mignonette sauce (wine vinegar and minced shallots), a sprinkling of fried shallots and a squeeze of lemon and they’re good to go sliding down your throat spreading their briny, “taste of the sea” loveliness. The sushi/sashimi table is always a popular spot at any buffet and here was no exception. Premium quality fish, glistening pink salmon, translucent cuts of tuna, sea bass and wonderful creamy, rich saba mackerel were all on offer together with a selection of seaweed wrapped delicacies. Sashimi is a direct taste experience with the fish needing to be of the highest quality as there is no hiding behind sauces and other distractions

Sunday Gourmet Grazing at Elements Five-Star Brunch >> from L1 other than a good soy sauce and wasabi and some pickled ginger. This sashimi is premium grade with the finest of delicate flavours and precision cut to perfection. Nestling behind a market garden of dressed salads, the crustacean station offers an ocean of seafood glistening from its icy display, big chubby pink prawns, blue crabs, rock lobsters, Alaskan king crabs and mussels beckoned, all accompanied by their special sauces and condiments. Outside on the terrace the BBQ chef was poised at his station ready to throw another New Zealand lamb chop or pork tenderloin, prawn, fish, squid or rock lobster or banana wrapped fish onto the grill. The smell was wonderful and the air heavy with smoking seafood and intense aromas. The carvery was adjacent doing good business with a succulent roasted leg of lamb spiked with rosemary, Australian striploin or a Cajun chicken flavoured with tarragon. All carved to order and served with a selection of roasted vegetables and sauces including mint jelly. The white wine served is Villa Maria sourced from vineyards across the Marlborough region of New Zealand, it’s an intense Sauvignon Blanc, lively with good flavours. The red is Lapostolle Merlot from the Rapel Valley in Chile, medium bodied and well balanced, it pairs well with most meats and certainly the cheese. Further main courses are waiting in their chaffing dishes, poached salmon with a leek and butter sauce, braised lamb shank with mushrooms, dried chicken curry, seafood bouillabaisse, Asian style and more. A veritable cornucopia of dishes is on offer and not only all this but the kitchen will cook personally for you a whole selection of other items such as various pasta with favourite sauces (including ravioli and mac ‘n cheese), eggs anyway up, pizza and risotto. There’s also a young’uns menu with all their favourites, which brings me neatly to the newly opened Planet Trekkers Kids Club. Here, under close supervision, the kids can play away, make new friends and generally enjoy their Sunday afternoon while their parents can take advantage of some personal time on the terrace with that stunning view and a glass of something cool. There is also a specially devised Kids Menu and candyfloss for the sweetest treat after lunch. We were reaching our limit of food

intake, but there was one gourmet treat still to come. If you’re a fan of risotto, the kitchen makes a stellar rendition, which I ordered with mushrooms and truffle oil. To add the final touch of luxury overload, the foie gras station delivered a duo of the melting lacquered liver topped with a delicious mango chutney. The triumphant combination of the earthy risotto and rich creaminess of the foie gras was sheer heaven; do try it. We could not leave without tasting the splendid array of imported cheeses from Italy, France and Spain (Pecorino Romano, Parmesan, Blue and Manchego). Crunchy baguettes

or garlic toast were both there to complement the cheeses plus pickles and dried fruits. Adjacent to these, a leg of Serrano ham was available, carved to order and presented in enticing slivers. Closing with a decadent dessert is a must at any brunch. The house patisserie produces the most beautiful creative pastries and desserts, opera cake, mango mousse, crème brûlée, tiramisu sparkle and glint with sweetness while the homemade ice cream flavoured with coconut or strawberry would make for a wicked companion to the above or a refreshing solo dessert. We ordered the hot fondant cake, which was spot on with its glorious decadent chocolate centre oozing on to the plate. A serving of coconut ice cream shot this pleasure bomb into the gastro-stratosphere. Sunday brunch is B.1,899++ per person. Free-flow wine and local beer is an extra B.900++, B.2,900++ for Champagne. EL GRECO Angel’s Hellenic Bites Back in the day when Mick and I used to “island hop” around the Mediterranean, we fell in love with Greece and managed to visit 29 islands, which has given us an enduring affection for the country, it’s people, it’s food and it’s “take-your-breath-awayviews”. Imagine our surprise when driving down a small soi in Pattaya we spotted the familiar blue and white colour combo of Greece and the restaurant sign, El Greco. This family taverna is run by husband and wife team Angel and Nick. A charismatic couple who, although leaving their homeland behind, have created an Hellenic home in Pattaya not only for themselves but for everyone who walks through their door. Angel is a qualified restaurateur with many years of experience from her businesses in Athens. What she doesn’t know about Greek food wouldn’t stuff an olive. The ambiance is sheer Greek: blue and white painted tables with comfy cushioned seating and a spectacular mural of beautiful Santorini watching over the activities. Going out to eat is part of the local culinary culture in modern Greece, even in times of economic crisis, and already a table of half a dozen Greek food lovers were tucking into their hearty dishes and discussing spiritedly the way of the world. We left our order completely in Angel’s capable hands, Meze style, and awaited the pageant of dishes. First up a ‘welcome’ dish of the legendary tzatziki appeared, served with some Kalamata olives doused with fruity olive oil. Has there ever been a more under- estimated dip than this cool, creamy yoghurt appetiser mixed with cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice, dill and garlic? It’s so versatile and will happily complement

grilled meats or fish in addition to being a tasty dip for bread or vegetables. Stuffed green chillies were the next plate to arrive. Fried to a tasty blister and filled with tomato sauce and Feta cheese, we loved them. Next to hit the table was the famous Greek salad (B. 220 or B.110). Known and loved around the world, it always tastes best when at its simplest, red ripe tomatoes, cucumber, onion, perhaps cuttings of green pepper, the best olive oil and that creamy, briny feta sprinkled with herbs. We were drinking the house wine (B.60 per glass). Retsina was sadly unavailable but as soon as a new consignment arrives we will be back; it's just so

reminiscent of those sun-soaked long taverna lunches way back when. Stop me if you know this, Retsina is a Greek white resinated wine which has been made for at least 2,000 years. It’s unique flavour is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels with pine resin in ancient times and the flavour literally stuck with the happy imbibers. A substantial portion of mousaka was the next to be served. Much loved, this traditional Greek recipe contains luscious layers of minced lamb cooked in a tomato based sauce, layered with aubergines and creamy béchamel sauce before being baked until golden in the oven (B.230). This came

accompanied by its brother dish, pastitiso. Another very traditional baked recipe, but instead of aubergines, pasta is used with minced beef before being baked. Both are major stalwarts of any Greek kitchen. A minced kofta kebab came next, the herby, spicy flavour was enhanced by the use of lamb and beef in the kebab giving a much deeper flavour. There’s a veritable treasure of time honoured dishes here. Kleftico is slow cooked roast leg of lamb with garlic, lemon and herbs served with roast potatoes, gigantes Plaki (B.190) are giant butter beans simmered in tomato sauce with onion, garlic and parsley, Souvlaki (meat kebabs), fried squid, feta or spinach cheese pie layered in filo pastry, meatballs, stuffed cabbage, spicy Greek sausages, the list goes on. Plus there’s a full Thai menu , including spring rolls, noodles, tom yum goong, curries and the like. Our very substantial Greek

metzedes ended with two iconic desserts, namely baklava and kataifi. Both nut based pastries made from filo pastry with the kataifi pastry closely ressembling shredded wheat. Both are saturated with honey and scented with cinnamon and clove. They’re absolutely delicious and enjoyed with a cup of Greek coffee, the perfect ending to your food odyssey. Just time for a toast with a glass of Ouzo, the country's aniseed-based any time drink with a Greek cheers, “yasou” and it’s time to go. Lotus Leaf Young Rice Young rice steamed in lotus leaf with Chinese sausage, lotus seed, shrimp, and salted egg INGREDIENTS 2 pcs lotus leaf 80 grams shrimp 10 ml coconut milk 200 grams pounded unripe rice 20 grams Chinese pork sausage 10 grams shiitake mushroom 5 grams boiled lotus seed 5 grams dried jujube some spring onion some garlic and coriander root 30 ml vegetable oil Â˝ pc salted egg yolk 15 ml white soya 5 grams sugar some sesame and salt 10 grams sweet shredded pork METHOD To prepare Steam lotus leaf for 5 minutes until soft. Clean shrimps and half boil. Mix coconut milk with young rice and then steam for 3 minutes. Slice Chinese pork sausage and shiitake mushroom. Half boil lotus seed and dried jujube. Thinly slice the spring onion. Chop the garlic and coriander root. To cook Preheat the saucepan to medium-high heat. Add oil and sautĂŠ garlic and coriander root until fragrant. Turn the heat to low, add the Chinese pork sausage and stir until brown. Add dried jujube, lotus seed, shiitake mushroom, shrimps, and salted egg. Turn the heat to high and stir-fry together. Turn the heat to low then add white soya, some sugar, salt, and sesame. Stir thoroughly to mix well. Add the young rice and mix in the pan. Turn off the heat. Put the mixture into the lotus leaf. Wrap the leaf and steam for 5 minutes.

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may produce referral pain in the neck. The neck, now acting as a satellite trigger point, may then cause pain in the head. The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache.

General Guidelines 1. Roll on the foam roller/ball until you feel a “trigger point” or “hot spot.” You’ll know you found one when it hurts. 2. Avoid applying pressure on bones and joints. Great Month for Thai Real Estate To say the very least, August 2017 marked one of the most important and progressive months ever for the Thai real estate industry. First, the Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association of Thailand (RESAM) again joined forces with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) to present the world’s most highly-recognized real estate education and business opportunity: the Certified International Property Specialists Training Course (CIPS). From August 12 to 16, RESAM held its third such training course in Bangkok at the FYI Center’s Victor Club, where NAR trained 47 Thai and foreign real estate professionals as International Property Specialists. The Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association of Thailand (RESAM) was established in 2005 by Dr. Pairote Sukjan, RESAM’s first president. RESAM now has 120 members, including realtors,

NAR is the world’s leading real estate alliance. Headquartered in the United States, it also is the world’s largest trade organization, boasting membership of almost 1.3 million individuals from 89 real estate associations in 68 countries. The CIPS certification course is targeted at expanding the knowledge globally for each participant with a hands-on experience in international real estate transactions, as well as five full days of intensive study focused on transnational transactions and their most critical aspects. Topics included currency and exchange rate issues, crosscultural relationships, regional market conditions, investment performance, and tax issues, among others. Course titles are Global Real Estate: Local Markets, The Business of U.S. Real Estate, Asia/Pacific and International Real Estate, Europe and International Real Estate, and The Americas and International Real Estate. What is Patent? Patent is an important document that the Government Office issues to grant protection for an invention or a design. Patents are a form of intellectual property. An invention is any innovation which creates a new, or improves a known, product or process. A design is any form or composition of lines or colors which gives a special appearance to a product and can serve as a pattern for a product of industry or handicraft. What types of Patents does Thailand recognize? You may register Patent for Invention, Design Patent and Petty Patent. Patent for Invention is the protection of feature, improvement and components of product or process. Design Patent is for creativity protection concerning features pertaining to the shape, color, configuration or pattern of an item. Petty Patent is for new product or process, improvement with moderate technological development or low level of innovation with some more utilization. Is Patent registration compulsory? Thailand does not officially require Patent registration. However, there are many benefits that you can consider. What are the advantages of registering Patents? Registering Patent provides greater legal protection against infringement. It protects the inventions and designs and solely grants the patent owner the rights to produce and distribute such product for a limited time. When you register a patent, it deters others from using the same production idea. The registered patent will appear in patent search system. This will likely discourage others from proceeding to register similar Patent. Once registered, it provides the patent owner with greater remedies. It increases the likelihood of the successful filing of a dispute resolution case from an infringer. How can an invention be eligible for Patent registration? Patent applications are eligible for registration if they satisfy the following conditions; · the invention is new; · it involves an inventive step; and · the invention is industrially applicable. The patent must not consist any of the following characteristics mentioned in Section 9 of the Thailand Patent Act B.E. 2522 as they are not protected under this Act: 1. naturally occurring microorganisms and their components, animals, plants or extracts from animals or plants; 2. scientific or mathematical rules or theories;

3. computer programs; 4. methods of diagnosis, treatment or cure of human and animal diseases; and 5. inventions contrary to public order, morality, health or welfare. It is especially relevant that the applicant or his agent have an office or address in Thailand for communication by the Registrar. What type of design can you not register under Thai law? According to Section 57 and 58 of the Thailand Patent Act B.E. 2522, you cannot register Design Patent for a design having or consisting of any of the following characteristics: 1. a design which has existed or has been widely used in the Kingdom before the date of filing a patent application; 2. a design whose image, substantial part or detailed description has previously been disclosed in a document or printed publication, whether inside or outside the Kingdom, before the date of filing a patent application; 3. a design which has previously been published under section 65 in conjunction with section 28 before the date of filing a patent application; 4. a design similar to any design mentioned in subsections (1), (2) or (3) which can be seen as an imitation; 5. a design which is contrary to public order or good morals; 6. a design which is prescribed by the Ministerial Regulations. How long is a Patent protection valid? The registered patent solely entitles the patent owner the right to produce and distribute such product for a limited time. · 20 years from the application-filing date for Patent for Invention · 10 years the from application-filing date for Design Patent · 6 years from the application-filing date for Petty Patent

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) partners with Thailand Smart Trade Center (TSTC) and JD.com, China’s second-largest e-commerce website to hold a promotion activity on “Express to China E-commerce with JD.com” with the aim to share knowledge about online trade in China in order to effectively reach target consumers. Participants gained insight from experts on the Chinese market from Jingdong, the company behind JD.com, Chinese e-commerce giants and also TSTC, a distribution center for Thai products and products that have been awarded the Thailand Trust Mark (T Mark) situated in Foshan, Guangdong, with 80 companies from Thailand displaying their products at the center.

The event also featured the launch of Thailand Pavilion, a special section on JD.com B2C e-commerce platform highly popular in China where the DITP has organized another channel for Thai exporters to directly reach Chinese consumers. GIS enjoys IGCSE success again

Garden International School (GIS) students have been celebrating their spectacular IGCSE results. Following the May 2017 examination session, students were delighted to come away with a string of excellent grades. In total, students had a 83.5 per cent pass rate. And even more impressively, 88 per cent of students gained 5 or more passes at IGCSE. A pass is considered to be a grade ‘C’ or higher. In the UK in 2016, 67 per cent of students achieved grades A*-C for their GCSEs. Among the star students were Aakheel and Kanokrak (Pop), who both gained 10 passes, including 7 at A or A*. Also celebrating was Erica, who achieved 9 passes, including 7 at A*/A, while Mara was awarded 8 passes, including 6 A*s and two As. Peeraya (Kam) gained 9 passes, 5 of which were A* and 3 As. The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is run by Cambridge University and is the world's leading examination for 16-year-olds. GIS is the most established IGCSE centre in the region. The

school's results are regularly far above the global average. In addition, several Year 10 students took IGCSE Mathematics a year early, and all passed, while some Year 9 students took IGCSE English as a Second Language (ESL) – and also enjoyed a 100 per cent success rate. One IGCSE Mathematics student scored an incredible 99 per cent in his examination. What are the sounds that signal the arrival of summer? Here in Thailand it’s the pitterpatter of the first raindrops, marking a welcome relief from the oppressive heat that builds up in the weeks following Songkran. Back in the U.K., ironically, it also tends to be the sound of rainfall, only there it marks the annual disappointment of another summer failing to turn up. Here at MIS however, the arrival of summer is marked by a different sound: The sound of laughter and activity echoing round an otherwise empty campus as our summer school programme begins. This year our summer school programme has been a particularly busy one for us with four different classes, ranging from the two Early Years classes that entertain our youngest students, to a new, more academicallyfocused, Middle School class for those students preparing to enter Year 10 and begin their IGCSE courses. In between these, there is our Primary class for children between six and 11 years old. Each year the summer school organisers produce an over-arching theme for the programme and this year they came up with the wide-ranging and highly adaptable idea of “Health and Well-being”. When I caught up with the Early Years teachers, one hot and clammy afternoon roughly world leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, athletes and performers” said Kelvin Koh. half-way through the fourweek programme, they shared with me some of the activities that had been inspired by this Health and Well-being theme. These included promoting healthy eating by making salads and smoothies; developing emotional intelligence through creating ‘food faces’ to express different emotions and keeping physically fit with sports, games and swimming. Perhaps the most challenging of the summer school classes is the Primary class as it has to accommodate the widest age-range in the programme. I discussed these challenges with the Primary class teacher, Mr. Mike, who is one of the Year 5 homeroom teachers at MIS. I began by asking him what his philosophy was towards summer school. Did he approach it as, essentially, an academic programme, or more along the lines of an activity-based summer camp? Mr. Mike acknowledged that achieving the right balance between these two ideas was one of the main challenges as some of the parents wanted more academics, some more activities. Mr. Mike’s solution was to devote most of the mornings to classroom work, mainly English and Mathematics, whilst the afternoons and some late morning slots were given over to sports and other theme-related activities. Most of all, however, Mr, Mike said that he wanted the students to have fun, even during the

classroom lessons. As for meeting the needs of such a disparate group of students, Mr. Mike said that the key was finding activities that everyone could access at their level. As an example, he talked me through a project where the class made stethoscopes out of toilet rolls, bits of rubber tubing, and various other plastic items. He taught the students how to use these to monitor their heart rates. The children then did a series of exercises that gradually increased in intensity and kept a record of their heart rate after each exertion. The stethoscope project strikes me as being a really good example of how a welldesigned activity can tick a lot of the summer school boxes. Academically, it covers science, design and technology, and P.E. However, it is also fun! The children can all manage the stethoscope-making task and enjoy the various physical challenges involved. Many of our students really benefit from the summer school programme as it is their only opportunity to keep using their English language skills throughout the long summer break. However, I would hope that we can also make it an occasion where they can have fun, make new friends and enjoy something of a holiday, even if it does happen to be raining. werewolf. What’s certainly true is that tales of wolves interacting with humans go back centuries. The founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were suckled by a shewolf and Red Riding Hood was unlucky enough to meet one on her way home from school. By 1941 Universal Pictures wanted to repeat their great monster successes with Frankenstein and Dracula. But with a different lead actor. Boris Karloff felt he was getting too old to play

monsters and did not want to. Bela Lugosi’s star had fallen considerably during the 1930s and Universal did not care to bank on him as a crowd puller. Stepping into the new shoes was Lon Chaney Junior. The Wolfman of 1941 made him a star as Larry Talbot which he continued to play in five more similar typecast movies. He made real money from horror. The script was by Curt Siodmak was rich and well written. Indeed some of the stuff Siodmak invented in the script – that the werewolf can be killed only with a silver bullet or staff for starters – has taken root in the popular mind as the real truth. The setting of the film is deliberately ambiguous, but is a peaceful hamlet in Wales if you look really hard at or near the opening credits. As the story opens, Larry Talbot is returning from America to claim his right as heir to the family fortune of Sir John Talbot or Claude Rains. It’s hard to believe that the small Claude Rains sired Lon Chaney Junior, but they both play their parts so well that you forget their physical dissimilarity.

It’s inevitable that Larry gets bitten by a wolf – none other than Bela Lugosi in a bit part – and it’s lucky for Larry that he meets Maleva or Maria Ouspenskaya, a wrinkled old gypsy woman who knows everything about werewolves and dispenses her knowledge in some of Siodmak’s best lines. It’s surprising that this movie is just about the only werewolf movie that never shows a full moon. In the next 60 years this omission was put right in dozens of remakes and imitations. By modern standards, the makeup for The Wolf Man is indeed dated. It’s been said that Lon Chaney Junior looks more like a wild boar than a wolf. Yet makeup magician Jack Pierce does wonders with his yak hair, spirit gum and cotton and you have to remember there were not any computer generated images in those far off days. Also the werewolf could not have appeared too horrific or the censors might have become more difficult than they were in any case. The big transformation scene in this film is not man to wolf but wolf to man in the climactic scene as Chaney dies.

True love in some yak hair Well “dies” is too strong a word as he survived to appear in four later movies, finally saving Lou from a fate worse than death in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. There have been many sequels and imitations of which the best are probably An American Werewolf in London and the 2011 remake starring Anthony Hopkins as a very different Sir John. But it was Lon Chaney Junior who created the werewolf which everyone recognizes today. “Even a man who is pure of heart and says his prayers at

night can become a wolf, when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.” Chaney was the only monster actor to play in all renditions of the character in the 1940s. He died at the age of 67 in 1973, his body donated for medical research even though he basically smoked and drank his way to death. His last public appearance was in 1997 when he was given the honour of appearing as the Wolf Man in a series of United States commemorative, horror postage stamps.

Popular Conspiracy Theories In war, cities are often utterly destroyed: Stalingrad in 1943 and Berlin in 1945 are obvious examples from World War Two. But, when Paris was liberated from the Nazis in August 1944, Paris was still there - damaged certainly but with most of her famous buildings intact. Yet this was certainly not Hitler’s wish. He commanded “The city must not fall into enemy hands except lying in complete debris.” The question arises why Hitler’s instructions were not carried out and the microscope homes in on the German

commander of Paris, General Dietrich von Choltitz. Legends tells that he even received a screaming phone call from Hitler’s headquarters demanding “Brennt Paris?” or “Is Paris Burning”? One view is that von Choltitz deliberately disobeyed Hitler’s orders in order to hand over the city in good order. The other view maintains that the general wanted to obey his Fuhrer but simply lacked the resources to carry out the plan. Certainly, there was nothing in von Choltitz’ past to suggest he was a wimp or an anti-nazi. In the early part of

the war he personally ordered the destruction of both Rotterdam and Sevastopol and he is known, as Paris commander in 1944, to have had French resistance fighters shot. He even issued an order on August 23, as Paris was already falling into allied hands, to burn the Grand Palais. Yet Hitler was disobeyed and von Choltitz handed over Paris to the Free French forces on August 25. None of the explosives in place around the city had been detonated and De Gaulle walked in triumph through an intact Champs-Elysees and not the blackened ruins envisaged by Hitler. So is it possible, at the last moment, that von Choltitz’s courage deserted him? Perhaps he just could

not bring himself to blow up Paris with the war already lost? This version of events was promoted by the general’s son who claimed that his father decided to prevent unnecessary bloodshed. In his post-war memoirs, von Choltitz claimed that he realized Hitler was both insane and doomed. The 1966 movie “Is Paris Burning?”, in which von Choltitz is played by the versatile actor Gert Frobe, certainly makes the same point. But other commentators think such interpretations are far too flattering to the Nazi general. Resistance member Maurice Kriegel-Valrimont, long after the war, argued that von Choltitz brought as much death and destruction as he could on Paris and its citizens. When he ceased the killing it was only because he had lost the power to control events. Other resistance fighters claimed that von Choltitz never gave the orders to detonate the city simply to save his own life as he was on the point of being captured. The riddle of the German surrender continues to cause controversy to this day. Was

a hardened nazi struck late in the day by the futility and insanity of the war or did he simply wait too long before giving the fateful orders? The answer probably lies somewhere in between. Von Choltitz was certainly no romantic hero and it’s unlikely he saved Paris for its own sake. But he was a practical man who knew the Nazi cause was a hopeless one. There must have been an opportunity for him to press the button as the Germans lost control of the city, but he never pressed the button. The general certainly gambled when he disobeyed Hitler and went into allied

captivity. Von Choltitz’s wife and family were in Germany and could well have been sent to a concentration camp as punishment for father’s misdeeds. We know from Gestapo files that they were questioned, but that no action was actually taken against them. Perhaps, in the closing stages of the war, Hitler had too many other things on his mind. Or he may simply have forgotten. There is also a theory that Hitler was misled into thinking that some, at least, of Paris had been blown up by the Luftwaffe. If so, he was wrong. No German planes bombed Paris during that hot summer of 1944.

Pattana (Stableford) A permanent on our monthly schedule, this course can be a real toughie, however the quality of the clubhouse there and the friendliness of the staff make it a must on the schedule.

The 7 to 8th round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the Fuji Speedway which sits on the foothills under the famous Mt. Fuji. Driver Sandy Stuvik would once again be partnered by Croatian driver Martin Kodric. Friday's practice sessions saw generous amounts of rainfall, which is Sandy's favourite condition to drive his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in. The sessions went well as the Thai driver and team developed the set-up of the car to prepare for the weekend's races. Saturday morning saw a dry qualifying session, and having not tested on the Fuji circuit in the dry, Sandy and the team did the best they could, and managed to qualify in 6th position for Race 1, and 15th position in Race 2. Race 1 took place under the sun and heat of Mt. Fuji, the team and drivers would yet again be tested as this heat would mean a different set-up for the car. After a fantastic start, Martin Kodric managed to gain 4 positions and hold 2nd place until the pit stops. Sandy then got in the car, but due to the 7 second success penalty, (for finishing 2nd at the previous race in Suzuka) Sandy exited the pit lane in 3rd position. The Thai driver managed to maintain his position until the charging Mercedes of Maximilian Buhk overtook him to take the final

podium spot. Eventually, Sandy finished in 4th position overall, and 3rd in Silver Cup class. Despite the ominous clouds hovering above the Fuji Speedway, the circuit remained dry much to the despair of the Thai driver. It would be a difficult job for Sandy starting from 15th on the grid. After a decent start, Sandy managed to gain a few positions and was fighting to break into the Top 10. While Sandy was fighting the other cars his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 had a fuel pressure problem and the Thai driver lost all power. He managed to limp to the pits where the team solved the issue. A few laps later Sandy handed the car over to his teammate, and the pair would eventually finish in 24th place. 'We had a weekend of ups and downs, we know what issues we had, and unfortunately some of those were out of our control. From Fuji I will take with me a 4th place finish, and I'm sure that in the next race in Shanghai we can continue our improvements,' says Sandy. St. Andrews 2000 - St All the major golf tournaments are done for the year, right? Wrong! The Tropical golfers consider every outing a major event, and the rounds are always interesting even if it’s just for laughs. This Friday the group decided to test themselves with a trip out to St. Andrews - of the 2000 variety. You didn't really think we were off to Scotland did you? To show what a class

Even taking into account scarified greens are needed for good maintenance, it doesn't help to perform that on brown greens with bare and blighted patches. Fairways had many

We don't know what else they have planned inside and out, but this is a good step in a fine setup just in need of some TLC, also known as money. Overall course condition is currently goodfair, and the greens were quite nice. The already intimidating layout was intensified by the fact the rough was extra long and swallowed more than a few balls. Final scores showed that sometimes you fight the course and the course wins! Humble pie on the menu? Still, not everyone was beaten into submission. A-Flight (0-19): Only one player kept his head

Next came the departing Reg Cochrane (24) and Ronnie Ratte (20) who were surprised to be called with 26 points. You just never know! Best Nine (non-winner): The best half rounds went to Tom Herrington and Walter Baechli.

Brian Gabe and Mashi were both in the swing on the day. On this day driving up there I was advised by Dick to take the ‘Bouncy Bouncy Road’, as it had now been resurfaced. This road used to be really good until the sheer volume of traffic, especially trucks, turned the road into a nightmare. So onto the road and a great improvement as it was a good drive, just another reason to go to this course and in fact courses like Greenwood, Treasure Hill and Pattavia. The course was busy and outside the changing room the buggies were lined up, but thankfully with three nines we were off the C nine first and the rest were off the B first. So straight off we went. It was hot and windy as we

Greenwood Well it was to be 19 eager starters to take the buses up the highway to tackle Greenwood CC Golf Course. On the buses the usual suspects were predicting as they do every time we venture out, it is a vast different trip home with most of the punters taking the time to lament the days outing: I think that a lot tend to sleep off some of the refreshments from the night before.This is a very funny game, it can do your headin! We played C and B nines, off the yellow tees and although at 6,100 yards, a little short for some, and as always the tricky par 5’s sorted most out. Scores were good on the day but this is a course that sorts out a lot of golfers. The course was in good nick with the greens playing true. Weather was also good to us, a bit of a breeze would have been good as it did get hotter as the day got longer. But his Thailand, TIT! It was Keith Buchanan who took all the accolades, his return was a very tidy 41 points. He was closely followed by Shane young who also had a very good return on the day. Bunker Boys Golf Khao Kheow (white tees), C&A, Medal A good low season number of 13 golfers made their way to Khao Kheow for the first round of the week. We were allocated the C and A nines and play got underway ahead of time and resulted in an early finish. A tough course at the best of times and today's medal round seemed particularly so for many with at least five players not submitting a card at the close of play. It seemed that many grossed over 100 net, even some who returned cards also topped the ton. As usual, the cream rises to the top and the winner on the day was Geoff Parker who returned a very good score of net 73 off a handicap of 14, Geoff is currently playing consistently good golf and will be hard to stop winning golfer of the month with a solid lead and only five more rounds to play. Second went to Neil Carter one stroke back also off a 14 handicap. Neil is also in the mix but needs a few wins to overtake Geoff. Third place went to Jimmy Carr on 78 off a 16 handicap. some pressure on the leaders. After a long absence, we were pleased to welcome back Barry Murnin for today's round. Since his last visit Barry must have modeled his dress sense on that of Raleigh as both wore interchangeable Hawaiian tee shirts, even Jimmy is now getting in on the act, perhaps a whole new trend in after golf attire is about to evolve. On a course related matter today, a caddie was seen to rake a bunker with her foot despite two rakes being no more than three paces away, a surprise event on such a well-regarded course. Results: 1st - Geoff Parker (14) 73 net 2nd - Neil Carter (14) 74 3rd - Jimmy Carr (17) 78 Near pins: Neil Carter (2), Geoff Parker (2) St.Andrews 2000, (white tees), Stableford The Bunker Boys rarely play the St Andrews course, however, a low season all in fee of 1,700 baht was enough to lure the brave and the foolhardy to today's midweek round. One notable exception was Raleigh Gosney who in some Pattaya purple haze misplaced his house keys overnight and was confined to spend the day changing locks, a serious missed opportunity to close the gap in the race for golfer of the month. St Andrews is a very tough course and presents a serious examination of one's golfing ability and course management skills. It has some very long holes and some very tricky greens. It was all the tougher today with a stiff cross wind blowing, newly cored and sanded greens and bunkers of hard packed sand. In fact, the bunkers were of such interest to Geoff Parker that he decided to visit just about all of them on the course; Geoff is now available for lessons in how to play off hard packed sand. A good group for the days outing bolstered by Todd’s Touring Party who once again have joined us for a few games of golf! Good to see you guys, one can only hope that you have as much enjoyment as you have in the past. The only thing missing from the day was Ricey! The course standard was high which is common for this club and the caddies also fall into this category.This scribe thinks that this is an A Grade course, and all is up to andabove standard! With the numbers we were to play three flights, A flight saw Paul Kennedy take this out with a tidy 34 points beating Freddie Starbeck on a count back third in was Aaron Dykes coming in one shot behind the winners. B flight saw the youngest Todd Brad score the score of the day Brad returned with a very tidy 40 points (Well done mate a great score) second past the post was Kissy Buchanan edging out Peter Mc Donald via a count back. C flight gave Ronald Gillett yet another top of the podium finish, 39 points was enough for Ron to take first position. Second in was Robert Cross one shot behind the leader, with Aaron Shorten filling the third spot on the podium. He did fare a bit better on the parr threes with three near pins, Barry took the remaining near pin. Treasure Hill is a favorite course for many despite its various challenges, particularly trees in the middle of many fairways, but an all in deal of 1,150 baht ensured that these issues were overlooked. This in itself would not have been a problem except they were in groups of five and six, so the inevitable happened, play ground to a crawl, frustration grew, and standard of golf deteriorated. One who kept his head when all around him were losing theirs was today's winner Jimmy Carr who returned a score of 37 points, a very creditable effort under the circumstances. All four near pins were won by different players. Our end of low season trip away to Bangkok this year and not Hua Hin is taking shape nicely and places are filling up fast; anyone keen to participate should register their interest with the club as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You & Your Pets Has your puppy reached his golden years? You may still see him as that cute whelp, but truth be told, your aging pup no longer leaps into your lap, chases a ball as energetically, or displays much excitement when heading out for a walk. All signs that Fido has become a senior citizen. Now it’s your job to keep him active, vital and happy while respecting his aging body. Continue daily walks, but instead of taking 40-minute walks twice a day, take 20-minute walks three times a day, and by all means slow down the pace. And continue playing fetch, but throw the ball fewer times. Both exercises help your dog maintain his strength and muscle tone, and help keep his weight down which, in turn, keep his joints healthy. What to look for? Signs of stiffness after being physically active or after lying down. Less enthusiasm about taking a walk, and getting tired sooner than he used to, lagging behind, and limping. Of course, these might be signs of osteoarthritis; leave that diagnosis to your vet. He or she can also provide some ideas on specific exercises to focus on to help strengthen muscle groups.

If pain management is in order, your vet might prescribe canine nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. But these meds can cause stomach, kidney, and liver problems, so have your doc watch your pal closely. Never give your dog ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Both can be toxic to him. Some vets will recommend a treatment plan that includes medications and non-drug therapies such as acupuncture, cold laser, and nutritional supplements. For your part, just keep him as active as he’s willing to be; don’t force him to exercise. If you have access to a pool, encourage your furry friend to swim—great for his heart and muscles without impacting his achy joints. Consider providing him with a ramp to reach higher levels (your car seat, steps, etc.), a harness so you can lift him more easily, or even a fitted cart if he is unable to use one set of legs. But don’t use a stroller and don’t carry him. Activity is the key to keeping him healthy.

This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.
