Pattaya expat worries The key matters concerning long-term farang in Pattaya are visa prospects and their own health care. That is according to a local survey carried out

by Pattaya Today with 100 expats, mostly retired British but also involving mainland Europeans, Americans and Australians. The newspaper is not claiming this was a scientific survey but was conducted by interview and telephone over a two-week period.

Almost all those contacted said their biggest concern at present was the ambiguity which they sensed about future visa policy in Thailand. At present most long-stay farang have a one year extension of stay based on retirement. A new 10-year visa for those over 50 years and their families has been introduced by the government, but the rules are complex - requiring police clearance from the home base and many financial documents - and can only be obtained in the country of origin and not in Thailand.

In spite of rumours to the contrary earlier this year,

the current retirement visa has been left untouched by the immigration authorities.

It requires annual foreign income or cash in Thailand, or a combination of both, of at least 800,000 baht. Yet many expats are concerned lest the rules are changed, for example a doubling of the cash or income requirement or a supplementar y rule demanding comprehensive medical insurance.

However, a senior immigration source told Pattaya Today there are no

plans to raise the financial floor limits, although he did say he had some reservations about the so-called “embassy letter� appearing to confirm an applicant’s yearly income from abroad since the procedure involved only an affidavit with little or no paperwork such as checked bank statements. He also pointed out that it was open to retirees to apply in Thailand for the mini-Elite card which offered a five year, multiple-entry visa for a oneoff payment of 500,000 baht.

concern to the majority of expats was their own health care. Many are now in their 60s and 70s, although most seem to have a strategy of sorts to deal with the problem. A surprising number, about 50 percent, still managed to maintain some sort of cover which was a protection against bills for substantial in-patient care in private hospitals.

Insurance for high-risk threatens motorists tourists proposed

Two ladyboys on a motorbike snatched a 20,000-baht gold necklace from a visitor from India. The tourist, Sunny Kumar Patel, told police that he was returning to his hotel in Central Pattaya when the katoey pair drove up to him and offered sex for a fee. When he rejected their offer, one of the transvestites snatched his necklace and the couple drove off. Based on Patel’s vivid descriptions, police were able to identify and capture the suspects.

Residents around Jomtien Second Road reported to the press that a drain cover was a danger to motorists. The metal cover had been replaced several times but it still lifts up every time a vehicle drives over it.

A meeting of police, army and district officials proposed that a scheme be introduced to cover accidents in instances such as diving, paragliding, jet skiing and similar activities. The insurance, provided by the operators, would cover up to 200,000 baht for death and 100,000 baht for injuries.

As they were preparing for bed, an explosion rocked the home of a married couple on Sukhumvit 26/1. Mr and Mrs Chatri Montri responded to find a blown-out window, destroyed furniture, and a huge hole in the ceiling.

Police responding to the couple’s call discovered evidence of an improvised pipe bomb.

Chatri Montri suspected that the perpetrator might be a competing Beach Road vendor with whom the couple had a conflict.

Pattaya’s finest are on the case.

A man on a motorbike taxi was killed when the bike crashed into a bus parked on Jomtien Second Road. Two others were injured and taken to Banglamung Hospital.

Bus driver Suk Chimwihok said he was sleeping in the bus while waiting for his tourist passengers when the accident occurred. However, because the bus was in a no parking zone, police told the driver to report to the police station.

Police bust teens doing drugs

Officers from the Nongprue police station found and arrested nine teenagers doing drugs outside a house in Nongprue.

The teens, aged 13 to 16, were taken to the police station for questioning and their parents were notified.

City officials and Walking Street business owners reached an amiable resolution to the venue’s signage issues. At a meeting between the two groups, it was reported that some signs exceeded legal limits and others were potentially hazardous to the safety of tourists. The city suggested that both problems needed to be addressed and presented slides demonstrating acceptable signage.

THAI launches Bangkok to Vienna on November 16 Thai Airways International to herald direct flights between Bangkok and Vienna, Austria home of Beethoven, Mozart, Sigmund Freud, Sachertorte and Schönbrunn Palace.

Usanee Sangsingkeo, THAI acting president and executive vice president, Commercial Department, and Verena Hable, media relations manager, Vienna Tourist Board, jointly held a press conference at Royal Orchid Sheraton to introduce THAI’s new route. “ T h e E u ro p e a n m a rk e t i s substantial in size and potential and is growing on a continual basis.

Data from the Tourism Authority of Thailand in 2016 shows that approximately six million tourists

travelled from Europe to Thailand, an increase of 6.8 percent from 2015”, said Sangsingkeo.

Tourists from Eastern Europe, including those from Austria in Central Europe, ranked fifth amongst European tourist arrivals in Thailand or an increase of 10.5 percent from 2016.

Currently, THAI flies to 12 destinations in 10 countries in Europe: Copenhagen, Oslo, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Stockholm, London, Rome, Milan, and Moscow, which equates to more than 80 flights per week.

During January to June 2017, approximately 3.4 million European tourists travelled to Thailand, an increase of seven percent, compared

to same period last year, whereby Eastern Europeans including Austrians remained the fifth largest group and increased 17.3 percent.

Opening flights to Vienna, the capital of Austria and the aviation center for Central Europe, enables the THAI to serve passengers in neighbouring Eastern European countries within a 300 kilometer radius. These are countries Czech, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia, with a combined population of approximately 32 million people (Vienna catchment area). Information from Vienna Airport reports that 23.4 million passengers and 27 percent were transfer passengers.

Austria holds high potential in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. The Republic of Austria ranked eight out of 10 countries in the European Union in real GDP per capita in 2015 and 2016. However, air traffic right restrictions for flights between Austria and Thailand resulted in a slight reduction in the growth rate for Austrian tourist arrivals into Thailand, which continued to decrease in 2014 to 2016. thought they would probably return home in an emergency, provided they were fit to travel, or would rely on relatives back in the first country.

Several maintained that they would likely seek medical treatment in a third country, such as India, where medical costs were thought to be much lower.

Other concerns expressed by expats about living in Pattaya were the rising cost of living, blamed both on domestic inflation here and the devaluation of many currencies, especially the British pound. Those who found themselves with less money to spend said they had cut down on eating out and were resisting the attractions of expensive imported food items in supermarkets. Also mentioned as hazards were pollution, street crime, beach restrictions and

ongoing police and army crackdowns on places of entertainment.

Only 15 percent of those participating thought it was likely they would quit Thailand. The majority mentioned having Thai partners and children to support, enjoying the warm weather, having access to leisure facilities such as golf and still finding Pattaya “a city of fun” in spite of any reservations they might have. About a quarter of respondents had looked into a possible move to a neighboring country but had rejected the idea. Cambodia, in particular, had a free-and-easy visa policy and was still cheaper than Thailand but was not geared up for expat living.

“I tried it for two weeks”, said one 68-year old, “but nearly all the expats were working and I couldn’t find anything to do.”

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) annual Amazing Thailand Luxury Fam Trip 2017 was hailed a huge success by 32 top long-haul travel agents who attended from 15 major overseas countries from August 28 to September 3.

As part of the trip, the Amazing Thailand Luxury Trade Meet was also held to allow buyers to meet and discuss emerging trends with luxury travel service providers from around the Kingdom.

The event provided an ideal platform for Thai luxury tourism operators to discuss business and network with decision-makers from long-haul tour companies. The travel agents from Australia (3); Europe (17) including Denmark, Portugal, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, the UK and Italy, the UAE, and the Americas including Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina and the United States (12) came to Thailand specifically for the event.

The fam trip highlighted Thailand’s popular Bangkok-SamuiChiang Mai travel route and produced many luxury highlights.

For short-haul markets, TAT organised an earlier Amazing Thailand Luxury Trade Meet 2017 from June 26 to July 2. A survey of participants from that meeting offered interesting Thailand tourism news and insights into the perception of the Kingdom as Asia’s number one luxury destination.

The buyers confirmed Thailand as Asia’s leading luxury travel destination with Koh Samui and Phuket named as the most popular destinations, followed by Bangkok. Other notable top luxury destinations were Bangkok, Krabi, Hua Hin and Pattaya.

News 5,000 racers conquer Thailand’s first ever Spartan Race Over 5,000 racers experienced the world’s best obstacle race as they took part in the inaugural Spartan Race Thailand at Siam Country Club.

The world’s fastest growing sport that has seen over 240 races in more than 30 countries kicked off with two race formats in Thailand – the Spartan Sprint and the Spartan Kids race. The Spartan Sprint race featured a distance of 6.8 km which revealed 23 signature Spartan obstacles such as the Hercules Hoist, dunk wall, barbed wire crawl, monkey bar and fire jump.

Hallvard Borsheim from the United Arab Emirates came in first at a time of 00:44:43 in the Elite Men’s category, while Magdalena Cvetkovic from Hong Kong was crowned the champion in the Elite Women’s category with a timing of 01:05:47.

Top three racers for both categories walked home with a total of 90,000 baht in cash prizes and up to a year’s supply of My Whey protein worth close to 100,000 baht.

Most racers breezed past the dunk wall, over-under-through, vertical cargo and rolling mud while the elite and competitive enjoyed more challenging obstacles such as the olympus, barbed wire crawl, rope climb and slip wall. All Spartan Sprint and Spartan Kids racers received a Finisher Tee and a medal upon completing the race.

racers and spectators alike entertained.

Racers who were interested in how the Spartan course was built can see machinery on display at Komatsu show area.

There was also a slew of healthy food and tasty drinks such as salads, smoothies and My Whey ice cream for participants to enjoy.

All registered racers will also be eligible to participate in a contest to win a pair of flights, accommodation and race entries in the 2017 APAC Championships Series in Perth, Australia in November. CAMBODIAN VISAS ONE One-year multiple entry visas in Cambodia have long been very easy to obtain: get a one month “general” (not “tourist”) visa on entry for US$35 and extend for 12 months by paying the agent around US$300. No paperwork, not even a photo. Technically, this one year extension of stay was for business purposes and to facilitate obtaining a work permit, but was in practice often used by non-working expats and retirees. But no more.

CAMBODIAN VISAS TWO Cambodian authorities have announced, effective this month, non-working expats and retirees based in the country must now apply for a new one-year extension of stay known as Retirement. The problem is that the precise documentation at the time of writing isn’t clear. There has been talk of “proof ” the applicant is a retiree with an income from his or her first country, but the devil, as usual, lurks in the actual detail.

THAI VISAS ONE The Thai 10-year Retirement visa, actually two periods of 5 years, is now with us, but sources say that the Immigration Bureau has not been overwhelmed by the number of applications. The documentation is substantial to say the least – police clearance from the home country, proof of 3 million baht in a Thai bank (a bit less with proof of foreign income) and comprehensive medical insurance from named Thai companies. The one-year Retirement extension of stay, by comparison, is straightforward indeed. Many farang are hoping it remains that way.

THAI VISAS TWO What happened to the government’s policy that all foreign tourists entering Thailand should have travel insurance which would cover medically holiday accidents and holiday diseases? With some 30 million tourists expected to descend on Thailand next year, mostly Chinese, the implementation would be Titanic. The guiding principle seems to be that too many foreigners are taking advantage of free hospital treatment, hence the need for cover. But, as ever, the devil is in the detail. For instance, most hospitalizations are not covered by travel insurance in any case.

HELLO CHUNNEL Pattaya’s new underground pass on Sukhumvit looks very polished and professional. Its main merit is separating the traffic wanting to turn left and right at or near Pattaya Central Road with less queuing traffic. The main demerit, on busy days, is the lengthy tailback as through traffic seeks to join the main highway after exiting the Chunnel. Ah well, Rome wasn’t built in a day or even a week.

A LIKELY STORY Of all the social media rumors concerning the flight of Yingluck last month, the most bizarre was surely the notion that she hired a small boat at Rayong and rowed all the way to Cambodia. Second best was the theory that she could never have crossed an unmanned land border at Trat because the terrain is mountainous and she would not have wanted to risk losing a foot to a land mine. Hmm!

NO NATION If you wondered why you never see The Nation for sale anymore in supermarkets or the diminishing number of news stands, the explanation is that the newspaper’s owners have now banned sale or return. In other words, the retail outlets cannot be reimbursed for unsold copies. However, you can still read the newspaper online or peruse a paper version with your coffee at Starbucks.

THANKS TOBE Not too many people know the name of movie director Tobe Hooper, who died last month, but they certainly have heard of his most famous 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Tobe allegedly spent several vacations in Pattaya in the 1990s and even caused a rumpus on Beach Road when he queried whether or not the stalls selling Leather Face masks were in breach of copyright.

Of course, they were. This is Pattaya.

ELECTRONIC FUTURES Technology is supposed to make life quicker and simpler for us all. But it doesn’t seem to work when it comes to paying for your snack in a fast food joint. Using your smart phone to perform the simple transaction seems to take triple the time of actually handing over cash and getting your change. The days of the banknote may be limited, but let’s keep them in circulation for the time being.

VEGAN-V-VEGETARIAN Not everyone in the restaurant business understands that whilst vegetarians can be flexible, vegans want to consume only plant-based food and avoid dairy products at all costs. News Luo Ying leads True Visions team to win Pro-Am Tournament in PTT Thailand LPGA Masters 2017 Luo Ying, 24-year-old CLPGA player from Guangzhou, China, led the True Visions team to win the Pro-Am Tournament in PTT Thailand LPGA Masters 2017, the

last significant ladies golf tournament in 2017 season of Thai LPGA Tour at Panya Indra Golf Club on September 11.

(SAT) together with PTT Group and Singha Corporation joined hands in supporting PTT Thailand LPGA Masters 2017 held on September 13 to 15 in Bangkok with a four-million Thai baht purse. It is the first-time tri-sanctioning by leading ladies golf tours of the region: Thai LPGA, China LPGA and Australian LPG. The Tournament had 36 teams consisting of one professional and three amateurs on a team. The competition was in 18-hole stroke play.

maintained by Air and Coastal Defense Command since 1950.

The operation of the Marine Turtles Conservation Center is focused on preserving sea turtles from egg until mature enough to be discharged into the sea.

There is also a sea tortoise hospital in the area to treat injured or sick sea turtles and to distribute knowledge to all visitors.

After leaving her for four months, her husband came back home and threw acid at her face and body, leaving her blind with their five year old boy.

Before the incident that happened back in Ethiopia, Atsede Nigussie was a young and healthy woman taking care of her family including her young son and her HIV positive mother while her husband was abroad.

Back from a trip in Yemen as an illegal worker, her husband threw acid at her face at the doorstep of their home.

After having received first aid, the young woman got help from friends and was able to fly to Thailand. Right now, she is at Vejthani Hospital in Bangkok in order to get the only treatment she can as they cannot treat her in her country.

One head of the hospital created a crowdfunding campaign to help Atsede get financial support as she cannot afford the cost on her own.

EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY ABLE THE DISABLED FOUNDATION, HORSESHOE POINT PATTAYA Volunteers needed Able the Disabled Foundation (ADF) Thailand is a foundation that provides therapy riding for special needs children. A horse’s movement is therapeutic and improves the child’s balance, coordination, behavior and muscle tone, along with confidence and self-esteem. The warmth of the horse’s body and rhythmic gait relaxes spastic muscles and stimulates muscular development. The horse’s movement naturally in walk simulates the movement of the human walk.

ADF Thailand relies heavily on volunteers for its operation, and community support for its funding.

There is a constant need for motivated, cheerful and reliable people to help. It is not necessary to know anything about horses, or disabled children, to make a big difference in the lives of these riders.

ADF teaches its volunteers what they need to know in order to walk alongside a rider or lead a pony.

The classes are held at Horseshoe Point on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10 am to 12 pm.

Private lessons are available afternoons from 2 to 6 pm weekdays and weekends.

Our Community Tennis, Magic and Healthy Eating

Members of the International Tennis Lovers Club, led by one of its founding members, Mark Kolenberg, spent time recently at the Father Ray Foundation to encourage the children to not only take an interest in the game of tennis but also to become more active and lead a healthier life.

Also in attendance was Danai Udomchoke, former Thai No. 2 tennis player, gold medal winner at both the Asian Games and the South East

Asian Games, and a player who has played on the clay at Roland-Garros and the grass at Wimbledon. Danai passed on his advice to the children and students, including offering invaluable advice to members of the wheelchair tennis team.

Tom Marshall, former Davis Cu p player from Iceland, also spent time coaching the children, while Renaud Cazillac and his team from Greta Farm & Sports Club introduced the children to the new game of Beach Tennis, and also provided

much needed sustenance in the form of pancakes and home made strawberry jam.

While more than 100 children were learning new skills on the tennis court, another 200 children and students were watching a magic show by the incomparable Dr. Penguin.

For more than an hour the magician astounded the children, young and old, with his skills and there were many watching with confused looks on their faces as they tried to understand just how Dr.

Penguin did what he did.

Late morning when the tennis coaching clinic and the magic show were over the children and students were introduced to Prof. Dr. Kalaya Kijboonchoo from Mahidol University. Dr. Kalaya gave a speech on nutrition, letting the children know the foods they should be eating and the foods that they should be eating less of.

Sport is not just about playing the game or running the race, it involves discipline and good nutrition, something that the children and students at the Father Ray Foundation now have a better knowledge of.

Growing marigolds for HM the late King Bhumibol

Dusit Thani Pattaya joins the nation in honouring the memory of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej by planting yellow marigolds in the hotel’s sprawling gardens. The move was in response to the government’s call to grow marigolds or other yellow flowers as yellow represents Monday, when King Bhumibol was born. Flowers planted now are expected to bloom by October 20th, in time for the royal cremation from October 25th - 29th. Keen tennis players gathered at Fitz Club - Racquets, Health and Fitness on Friday afternoon for the opening ceremony where Vitanart Vathanakul, executive director of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group along with members of the Fitz Club team, welcomed all the participants. Around 30 international and local tennis players assembled to compete in two types of matches: the 35+ men singles and ladies singles.

Competitors had the chance to play against friendly opponents pervading the courts with fun and excitement for the whole weekend.

At he end of the matches, Delilah Kuronen, the winner of the ladies singles and Markus Zinkand, the winner of the 35+ men singles, were each presented with trophies and their prizes including a cash prize of 3,500 baht and vouchers for Royal Cliff’s Saturday evening grand barbecue buffet dinner.

From the moment I entered Changi Airport’s skybridge, I could feel Singapore’s efficiency and cleanliness as I sped through the immigration customs and even the taxi queue. On the expressway, there were Audis, BMWs, Minis and some Porches, all respecting the island's zero-tolerance 90km/h speed limit. Then the impressive CBD skyline appeared on the way to my destination: 6 Shenton Way, Oakwood Premier OUE Downtown 1. My two nights at Oakwood Premier OUE Singapore sure beat all my previous stays at the Hilton, Four Seasons and the Fullerton five-star hotels, and the price is also competitive. I am truly impressed. From the check-in to my late check-out, outstanding service and facilities. Chapeau! as the French say.

However, since the minimum stay is seven nights, next time I’ll make it a week Oakwood Premier OUE Singapore Holiday with my wife.

Benihana has been providing “eatertainment” since its conception in 1964. Now there are over 116 franchises around the world and the name is synonymous with top notch food served in an ambiance of fun, amusement and exuberance.

Here in Pattaya, Benihana is under the auspices of Avani Resort and Spa and located on the 3rd floor of Royal Garden Plaza. Its reputation is based on its teppanyaki style of cooking: teppan meaning “steel grill” and yaki “broiled”. Their chefs receive sixteen weeks of intensive training before the final accolade of a red kerchief is awarded to confirm their proficiency.

Interaction between chef and guest is positively encouraged and the culinary cabaret is great fun, natural and bodacious Mick and I were invited recently to join the assembled diners to experience an evening of tasting

a collection of carefully chosen Californian wines, paired with a five course gourmet menu.

Our host for the evening was Matteo Clini, Area Sales Manager for IWS (Independent Wine & Spirit (Thailand) Co.Ltd.) who imbued us all with his enthusiasm for these lesser known wines. California produces nearly 90 percent of all American wine and is the fourth world producer after France, Italy and Spain. It has been said that Californians are serious about their wine but relaxed about everything else.

The evening was launched with a welcome drink of Prosecco Extra Dry served with snacks before being seated around the teppanyaki tables for the pageant of dishes to come.

Our dinner set off charmingly with a Kendall-Jackson Sauvignon Blanc, a Vintner’s Reserve from Sonoma County. The food pairing was a Tiger Prawn salad with Japanese pumpkin and rocket leaves with a sesameginger dressing. The prawn was sweet and perfectly deep fried while the salad just loved their sweet yet tangy dressing. However, the star of the plate, for us, was the Japanese Kabocha squash.

Very much prized in Japan for its sweet taste and velvety texture, we predict that its popularity will soar over here for its versatility and delightful taste. The luscious Sauvignon Blanc was the perfect opener affording a fresh open window into the pleasures of Californian wine.

Okinawa Potato Soup

Next to hit the table was an amazing violet-purple soup (Okinawa potato) crowned with a Hokkaido scallop. These sweet potatoes have bright purple flesh which is much sought after in Japan and some claim it can help you live to 100. We licked the plate clean.

The selected wine was from the Wente Vineyards and goes by the remarkable label, Chardonnay 2016, Morning Fog, Livermore Valley, San Francisco Bay. Named after the summer morning fog that billows into the San Francisco Bay, it creates a Mediterranean climate perfect for these grapes. This Chardonnay pays homage to the phenomenon with its bright, crisp flavours and hints of toasty oak blended from 98% Chardonnay and 2% Gewurtztraminer. Another corker which was a winner at our table.

At this stage the Benihana Master Chefs made their appearance and within minutes the atmosphere was high energy, knives (and eggs) were thrown, flipped, juggled, lobbed and pitched with skill resulting in a delicious bowl of Hibachi rice with bacon and mushrooms, topped with honey glazed ham. Grilled lamb cutlets were next to receive the Bussaba Ex-Weisse Benihana treatment accompanied by a herb butter and mint sauce.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 again from the San Francisco Bay, Southern Hills.

A delightful herby wine with flavours of black cherry and some subtle dark chocolate undertones.

Wagyu beef tenderloin provided the deluxe ingredient for the next course. A luxury beef item benefiting from the speedy teppanayaki treatment to produce a juicy, tender, steak. Another Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 was then served, this time from Kendall Jackson and their Sonoma County Vineyards. A magic marriage indeed. The curtain was then lowered on this gourmet feast with a dessert of apple compote with a homemade Yuzu sorbet.

Havana Hosts its Monthly Wine Tasting with a Selection of New World Wines It’s Back! The Havana Bar at the Holiday Inn Pattaya has resumed its popular monthly wine tasting. The latest event showcased the wines from the award-wining wine maker, Kim Crawford from Marlborough, New Zealand and the acclaimed Robert Mondavi winery from Napa Valley, California.

Havana’s format for its wine tastings is to present six rounds of free flow wines served at about half hour intervals from its start at 6.30 pm until 9.00 pm. Live blues and jazz was performed by Jowel and the Blues Machine.

The evening set sail with a pouring of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. This juicy exuberant wine, fresh and zesty was packed with flavour. It was a great opener to the evening. We found it paired well with one of the many canapés that were presented around the bar, especially the roasted mushroom and goat cheese plus the green apple and crab salad. Next up was another Kim Crawford wine, this time a Pinot Noir. Pleasingly aromatic with notes of dark cherries and further enhanced by partial aging in French oak barrels which was responsible for providing its pleasing complexity.

With this robust wine we found that the Tuscan salami and grilled chorizo married well.

Wine three and we were back to white as the Robert Mondavi Private Collection Chardonnay was poured.

Described as California’s First Family of Chardonnay, it was an extremely attractive wine and another of our stand-out bottles. Essences of Asian pears, red apple fruit and crème brulee dance across the palate in this classic 100 percent Chardonnay.

It paired beautifully with salmon gravalax with herbed cream cheese.

Round four produced a Robert Mondavi Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. This smooth, elegant wine with its smoky oak and roasted nut characteristics was another instant success. Eaten with a particularly good lamb curry pie and Italian meatballs they both made instant friends with the Pinot.

The evening was running away with us and it was now 8.15 pm and a Robert Mondavi Woodbridge White Zinfandel was being served.

An off-dry blush, rose in colour it is one of California’s favourite wines and has won many prizes over the years. A delicate, low alcohol wine with a slightly sweet quality which surprisingly paired well with savoury black pudding and crispy Parma ham.

The cheeses beckoned. All these beauties are surrounded by a full complement of nuts and dried fruits, marinated Kalamata olives,

cornichons, quince, and silverskin onions. The bread selection is astonishing, Turkish pide, polenta boule, baguettes, Danish rugbrod, a fig and aniseed baton, a black olive and onion focaccia plus Parmesan rosemary crackers fresh from the bakers to accompany these finest cheeses. This must be one of the very best cheese tables in the city.

A cheese lovers dream, it displays some of the premium artisan cheeses from France: Roquefort from the South of France, one of the world’s best known blue cheeses, Poiret de la Meuse, a cow’s milk cheese matured in pear brandy and coated with walnuts, Reblocon de Savoie an excellent goat’s cheese, Tomlette de Province al-Huille, and a sensational orange Mimolette Extra Vieolle, the French version of a classic Dutch cheese but this had been aged for 24+ months to produce its salty, sweet, caramel-like taste. All made perfect companions to the last wine of the evening a Robert Mondavi Woodbridge Zinfandel. The bright aromas brimming with blackberry jam, cherries, black pepper and spice adding life to this full bodied wine with velvety tannins.

Craving a little sweetness we headed to the dessert table. Whether you prefer chocolate, fruit or a slice of cake, it has been said that everyone

has their own “sweet” Achilles Heel.

Havana’s pastry chef excels and his counter is a not to be missed station.

Here, the wontonly luscious pastries the likes of brandy snaps, chocolate ganache choux buns, salt caramel donuts and a sumptuous almond honey cake with strawberry ripple sat awaiting our selection.

Sadly the event was drawing to a close but all the wines could be purchased at a special price of B.1,600 per bottle before leaving.

D.O.M.S Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise.

The soreness is felt most strongly 24 to 72 hours after the exercise. When muscles are required to work harder than they're used to, or in a different way, it is believed to cause microscopic damage to the muscle fibres, resulting in muscle soreness or stiffness. DOMS is often mistakenly believed to be caused by lactic acid build up, however, lactic acid is not involved in this process.

Should i train sore muscles?

If you’re overloading muscles then you’re causing damage at a cellular level. Repairing it hurts, but it’s also what makes you bigger. Pain, gain.

That’s when your muscles grow, if you let them recover.” Which is where that post-workout whey shake comes in, providing muscle-rebuilding protein for your body to patch itself back together.

But heading straight back to the squat rack batters your body again before it’s fixed itself, putting excess stress on your muscles and halting that growth. If you keep repetitively damaging them, and training through DOMS, you risk damaging them long term. Lots of pain, definitely no gains!!

The best way to prevent soreness and injury is prevention, so add these elements to your game plan: 1. Stretch it out.

2. Warm up before weight training.

3. Hydrate.

4. Work out with correct form.

5. Jump in an ice bath.

6. Heat up later in the day.

7. Reach for pineapple or tart cherries.

8. Use your sore muscles.

Mix it up That’s not an excuse to only make a weekly trip to the gym, though. The key is variety. You need to cycle body parts.

Legs with shoulders one day, cardio the next day, chest and back after that. Then biceps, triceps and abs. While you’re curling, your burning quads can rebuild for the next day’s lunges.

Has Apathy Struck Our Real Estate Industry?

Apathy can be cruel as by its very nature its victim is often the last to know.

My recent column, Thailand’s 10-year economic cycle, obviously was punctual in reporting that market downturns strike once a decade—in those years ending with the number seven. And here we are once again!

The good news is that the real estate booms that followed the last two crashes were incredible, boosting Eastern Seaboard property prices and sales volumes to new highs.

Now, however, on the heels of a protracted slump, I fear that real estate agents and private home sellers are suffering from a deep sense of apathy. The question that must be asked is: How do we best begin our journey back to prosperous times?

On this very subject, I found a Pattaya Today article written by Khun Dee nearly 10 years ago in which he points to the lingering apathy that then plagued the market. The writer’s observations are no less valid today for every real estate agent and individual home seller. To wit: Are you an apathetic seller As I explored neighborhoods in and around Pattaya recently-looking through the eyes of a friend who was shopping for a home, it occurred to me that there are an inordinate number of condominiums, townhouses and single family homes available for sale. That in itself was not surprising, of course. It was more of a recognition that this decade’s seemingly-giddy building spree so sharply contrasts with the current doldrums plaguing the local economy, tourism and the property market.

What was surprising was how apathetic so many sellers are.

Not that I expected open houses with balloons, clowns and free refreshments; but I did expect smiles, enthusiasm and presentable properties.

My friend and I were attracted by one home with excellent curb

appeal. Unfortunately, that’s where the appeal ended. Inside we were half-heartedly greeted by a cheerless woman, four overly-affectionate cats and offensive odors emanating from litter boxes. Before I could exit, my friend had already climbed over boxes and shoes scattered in the entryway and was well on his way to the kitchen. That room could have been a deal clincher for him because cooking is his passion. Instead, we found unwashed pots and pans in the sink and a fifth cat eating leftovers out of breakfast dishes on the counter. The floor was lined with newspapers under cat bowls.

And what was once an impressive stove-and-oven appliance had been allowed to deteriorate into a grimy grease pit.

Before making my escape, I wandered around the dreary house enough to find that discarded clothing had been left here and there, that the floor and furniture were dusty, and that the bed had not been made.

I could see past the bad housekeeping and recognize that the house itself had some lovely features and an underlying quality that would impress knowledgeable homebuyers.

But most visitors would be put off by such slovenliness; they would not even consider looking beyond the superficial. Instead they probably would be inclined to ask themselves: if the owner has so little regard for those areas of the home that are accessible and visible to prospective buyers, how has he maintained those areas that are inaccessible? The roof?

The air conditioner? The plumbing?

And how much will it cost me to repair those failings?

Regrettably, that house was not unique in being unprepared for market. Nor was the cheerless woman the only apathetic home seller we met. It cannot be stressed enough that if you’re sincere about wanting to sell your home you can’t afford to be apathetic in your preparation or in your attitude.

Particularly now when there are so many other homes available--homes which have been well-maintained and convey the owners’ sense of pride.

Granted, it may be that some owners are of the opinion that homes just aren’t selling now so why bother making an effort? Which makes sense if you don’t really care whether or not you sell. But if you do care, then adverse market conditions should provide even more incentive to redouble your efforts to attract and impress the few potential buyers who do exist.

Your real estate agent will probably advise you on such basics as: pick up your clothes, clean everything, eradicate the odors and eliminate the pets (at least temporarily). But that’s just the beginning of the checklist that you should follow prior to showing your home. Here are some additional suggestions: * Clean behind and under all appliances; remove dust. * Clean floors. * Dust and clean all light fixtures. * Clean windows and window coverings. * Wash walls and baseboards; touch up scuffs with paint. * Clean and polish the furniture. * Clean out your closets. Expect visitors to open every door. Do what you can to make closets look spacious; storage space is appealing. * Clean your kitchen pantry and all cabinets. * Dust and vacuum every room in your home thoroughly before each showing. * Scrub all areas of your bathroom, removing any soap scum and mildew. Make the porcelain and chrome shine. Use air fresheners in the bathroom and any other room that might need help. Display your best towels. * Clear as much clutter as you can from every room, particularly from counter surfaces. In the bathroom, for example, remove personal items (toothbrushes, combs and grooming supplies) from vanities. Appliances and tools that you typically keep out on the kitchen counter should be stored under the sink or somewhere out of sight. Clutter creates the illusion of less space (i.e., less counter space). * If you have excess furniture

Your goal should be to create as much open space as possible throughout every room in your house. * If a wall needs painting, or you painted a wall or two some unorthodox color, repaint it white or neutral. One final thought. Curb appeal is the home’s exterior appearance-that quality which lures buyers inside. So even before you begin to prepare your home’s interior, focus on the exterior.

What is Civil Litigation?

Civil Litigation is a lawsuit between persons or entities that does not involve criminal penalties.

It generally includes all disputes that are formally submitted to a court, about any subject in which one party is claimed to have committed a wrongful act, but not a crime. The remedy sought in Civil Litigation is usually to recover money or a judgment that requires one party to do something or to stop certain acts.

What cases go through Civil Litigation?

There are many cases which may involve Civil Litigation such as landlord/tenant cases, property disputes, business disputes, personal domestic controversies, personal injury or negligence cases, accident cases, breach of contract cases, defamation cases, medical malpractice, etc.

How does a civil lawsuit get started?

A typical lawsuit begins with filing a complaint in court, clearly setting out the nature of the claim, the relief sought and the allegations. Under Thai Law, the plaintiff must bring a civil case to the court where the cause of action arises or where the defendant resides. If involving an immovable property, the plaintiff has to bring a lawsuit to the court based on such property’s location, or where the defendant resides.

Once the defendant gets the complaint notice, he or she must file a written answer to the court within 15 days. The answer must clearly state his stand on every point of the complaint and what part of the claim he admits or denies. The defendant may also make a counterclaim against the plaintiff. If a counterclaim is filed, the plaintiff must answer it within 15 days from the date the answer is reached at the plaintiff.

What are the consequences for failure to file an answer and statement of defenses within the specified time?

If one is duly served with a summons and complaint in a civil action and then fails to respond within the time limit, the plaintiff may file a motion in court to declare the respondent in default. Once in default, the court shall continue conducting the proceedings and the defendant making a default of answer may crossexamine the evidence but will lose the opportunity to defend himself or attest his own evidences on the accusations made against him.

In case a defendant making a default of answer appears in court before the court decides the case and informs the court in the first instance that he intends to defend the case, upon consideration of the court

that the default of answer did not occur intentionally or occurred with reasonable excuse, the court shall allow such defendant to submit his answer within a period of time he so specifies and shall re-conduct the proceedings since the time that the defendant made default.

In case the court does not allow the defendant making default to submit an answer or the court once issued a retrial order as per request of the defendant, he shall be barred from filing request for submission of answer and request for retrial.

Do Thailand courts accept documents in the English language?

All documents must be in the Thai language as all court proceedings are conducted in Thai. Documents in a foreign language have to be translated to Thai before they can be admitted in court. This is except for Intellectual Property and International Trade court proceedings which may be conducted in English and only in case the parties mutually agree not to translate and the document is not an evidence of the main point of the case.

Is there a deadline for filing a civil lawsuit?

The Civil and Commercial Code sets statutes of limitations for filing a complaint. The time in which you may file a complaint depends on the type of action or nature of the claim you are pursuing.

It is important to promptly consult with a lawyer regarding the facts of your claims and whether it is advisable to file a lawsuit. If you fail to respect the time limitations set out in the statute you will be barred from bringing an action in court.

How long will my case take if it goes through the litigation process?

Each case is different. The length of the litigation procedure depends on the complexity of the legal issues and facts and the number of witnesses. The volume of cases being handled by the court also affects the process.

Some lawsuits are quickly resolved, whereas lawsuits involving complex high value claims may take several months or years from start to finish.

How do I know if I have a valid claim for a civil lawsuit?

The easiest way to determine whether you have a possible claim is to consult a civil litigation lawyer who is experienced in the area of your concern. A lawyer will be in the best position to evaluate your situation and make an assessment of your claim.

GM’s Rayong plant honored at Thailand Energy Awards 2017

General Motors Thailand’s Rayong plant was recognized for its outstanding efforts in energy conservation at the Thailand Energy Awards 2017. The facility was one of only two automotive companies and one of only seven manufacturing plants in Thailand to be honored in its category.

Deputy Prime Minister, Air Chief Marshal Prachin Chantong presented the award to Amnat Saengjan, vice president of Manufacturing at GM Thailand, on August 21.

The Thailand Energy Awards 2017 were organized by the Ministry of Energy’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency. A total of 66 awards were presented in five categories: renewable energy, energy conservation, personnel awards, creative energy, and the promotion of energy conservation and renewable energy.

Saengjan said, “GM Thailand’s Rayong plant is proud to be recognized as one of the most advanced automotive manufacturing hubs in the Asia Pacific region. We will continue our commitment to minimizing the impact of all of our facilities on natural resources and the environment through the ongoing adoption of sustainable strategies.”

GM Thailand is the first automotive company in the country to receive ISO 50001 certification recognizing its commitment to energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in its manufacturing process.

The Rayong plant has achieved the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Challenge for Industry voluntary energy-reduction challenge for three consecutive years. To fulfill the challenge, the facility cut its energy intensity on its truck line by 20 percent.

The plant also implemented the Energy Management System (EnMS), which allows GM Thailand to monitor and control the energy

consumption of machines, power transmission systems and utilities in each individual area. Twenty-three measures were implemented in two years, resulting in a 4.85 percent reduction of energy consumption and decreased energy expenditures of 33 million baht.

The measures included turning off machines when not in use, reducing start-up times for production, separating the chilled water system between the paint shop and the engine plant, expanding the size of the heat exchanger in the paint shop, and optimizing the heat exchanger and installing an inverter for ovens in the paint shop.

In the movie 300, the Spartans’ commitment to the cause of stopping Xerxes is questioned by Leonidas’ Athenian counterpart.

The Athenians had brought thousands of men to fight whereas the Spartans had only 300.

Leonidas counters the verbal jab with a simple question to three of the Athenian men, “What is your profession?” Even though the men are going off to war, none of them reply with the answer of warrior. When Leonidas asks the same question of his 300, all give a resounding cheer, indicating that they are all warriors.

If you were to come to Mooltripakdee International School, line up all of the Thai assistant teachers and ask them, “What is your profession?” you would get that same resounding cheer. The cheer would demonstrate that they were not warriors of course, but teachers.

That focus only makes sense, for most of the subject teaching is done by the foreigners who have been hired to teach in English. But what of the Thai assistants, just what is their role in the macrocosm that we call an international school? Why should their contributions be looked at closely when observing an international school?

At MIS, there are two assistant teachers placed in each classroom, many of them Thai.

Just what is their purpose in the classroom?

This is a question that is often overlooked

in the race to find a competent foreign homeroom teacher. It is astounding that this is so, since those same assistant teachers are the homeroom teachers’ left and right hands.

While the homeroom teacher organizes the curriculum into lesson plans and sets the objectives for the day, the assistant teachers often help turn those objectives into reality.

They do so by efficiently finding the materials needed for lessons and even expanding upon what the homeroom teacher has in mind. Many homeroom teachers have been pleasantly surprised by their assistants’ ideas when holding meetings about their lessons.

After all, three heads are better than one.

There is a reason that assistant teachers are given that name for their profession in the first place. It is because they proactively help the homeroom teachers to teach, not just sit back and relax while the foreigners do all of the work as many people seem to think they do.

movement, aiding the homeroom teacher by helping to manage the classroom, preparing materials so that they readily come to hand, and even by dealing with outside distractions that may interrupt the lesson.

At MIS, the assistant teachers never leave the students’ sides. They follow them to lunch, watch over them at recess and make sure they focus on their work during each and every subject. They are more than teachers; they are mentors, father and mother figures and helping hands when needed.

So it is easy to see why so much focus is placed upon the competency of assistant teachers when hiring at international schools such as Mooltripakdee International School.

At MIS, the management’s work does not end at hiring, either. The Thai assistant teachers are constantly aided and urged to continue with their professional development.

Each week they stay after school to practice their English with the ESL teacher. Many of the Thai assistant teachers have gotten quite good at English as a result. They take time out of their busy schedule to speak with the native English speakers to further improve upon what they have learned. They also have their own English notebooks to write about various subjects which are later read by those fluent in English.

Every assistant teacher is encouraged to keep a daily journal. This journal is used to help give the assistant teachers and management some idea of how the class is progressing

As a Round Square school we are part of a worldwide network of 180 schools in 50 different countries that all share a holistic approach to learning built around six IDEALS of learning: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, Service. A key feature of being part of this group are the exchanges that take place for both students and academic staff with other schools in this network. This provides a unique opportunity to collaborate and share experiences with like-minded peers around the world.

Two girls, Yuki and Sid, from Woodleigh School in Melbourne Australia, a fellow Round Square school, have just arrived to start their exchange programme at Regents International School Pattaya. They have joined our Year 9 students and are staying in our boarding facilities for the duration of the exchange.

They were chosen after going through an application process at their own school where they had to explain why they thought this could be a beneficial learning experience for themselves. They also had to present what they thought they would be able to bring back to share with the rest of the school on their return. Both girls like to travel and enjoy the new experiences that this can bring but more than that, they

wanted to experience a different culture for real, not just as a tourist. They felt that this exchange programme would give them the opportunity to be fully immersed in the Thai culture, to really connect and see the world from a different perspective.

McKenna, Round Square And Global Campus coordinator at Regents International School Pattaya said, “As a Round Square school we are passionate about helping our students to understand, experience and appreciate the many diverse cultures and communities that exist in the world. As they grow into the leaders of the future this experience will stay with them, instilling in them an understanding, tolerance and respect for others. We welcome exchange students from all other Round Square schools

throughout the year. If a student consistently causes problems, then the pattern can be detected and proven through the journal, and the homeroom teacher can be notified if he/ she hasn’t yet seen the problem.

The Thai assistant teachers are also required to write a research paper every year. Last year’s research papers were about classroom management and how to improve upon it.

It gave the assistant teachers and homeroom teachers much to think about and discuss, once the results were concluded and shared.

When Yuki and Sid return to Melbourne the girls hope that, by sharing their experience, they will inspire other students to do the same. They already feel they have more appreciation for a different culture and a different point of view. Being at Regents has also shown them how many different nationalities and cultures can come together as one family. Their advice to other students who may have this opportunity is, “Just go for it! It will be a great experience, a chance to do something different and open your eyes to the wider world.”

This & That Screen goddesses don’t live forever Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

This favourite movie of 1962 begins with a car wreck which is fine and dandy. The movie itself is a car wreck and you just can’t look away even for a moment.

The two aging divas – Bette Davis and Joan Crawford – play out their rivalry and hatred which began when both were juvenile screen goddesses in the middle of the first world war.

Bette Davis delivers a gripping performance as a drunken and ugly former movie star falling into utter madness as she realizes

her stage future is definitely behind her rather than to come.

Faithful to the novel by Henry Farrell, Davis plays “Baby Jane” Hudson as a spoiled child brat who stamps her feet and threatens mayhem when she can’t have an ice cream. Daddy quickly caves in. But her golden curls and daddy’s-girl routine brought her fame and fortune, if only for a while.

The older, gentler sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) who was ignored during Jane’s heyday became a big star in the 1930s

whilst Jane faded into obscurity and heavy drinking. But one fateful night Blanche is crippled in a car accident at the gates of their Hollywood mansion. For the time being, the audience is led to believe that drunken Jane was driving the car.

Blanche is trapped and wheel-chair bound for years on the upper floor of a somewhat dowdy mansion. But Jane is increasingly losing her sanity, finding all sorts of ways to terrorise her sister, even serving up for lunch Blanche’s beloved parakeet and providing a dead rat for a later meal.

Jane has the notion she can become a star again and hires an accompanist for her delusional comeback plans based on the now creepy songs of her childhood stardom.

The gold-digging accompanist finds out rather more than he should and the movie climaxes in the surreal environment of a California beach.

At the end it transpires that Blanche was driving the car when she was crippled and not Jane. But the silly plot is beside the point. The real fun of the movie is watching the two main characters rip each other apart.

In real life they hated each other too.

Joan Crawford underplays her role, probably deliberately.

Wheelchair bound and a long

suffering martyr, she could hardly compete with the antics of Miss Davis. Crawford is restrained and nearly always looks good even when abused.

In a way she has retained her youthful glamour even with lines on her face.

Davis by contrast sinks into utter depravity – a slovenly slut who doesn’t mind all those camera angles making her look as ugly as anything. She even keeps a hideous caricature of herself in the basement – a life-size doll of Baby Jane 1917 vintage.

The accompanist is played by Victor Buono, the overweight guy who died of a heart attack in his early 40s.

Buono is convincing as the schemer trying to coax cash out of Jane by pretending she can find stage fame once again.

But some of his scenes look as if they have been cut, perhaps because the movie is overly long as it stands. Sadly Buono’s talent was never recognized

by Hollywood and his later roles were mostly stereotypical murderers or a boring interlude as a silly Egyptian pharaoh.

It was common knowledge that Davis was hoping to get an oscar. She came close but was beaten into second place in the best actress nomination by Anne Bancroft in The Miracle Worker. In fact, Whatever

Happened to Baby Jane won only one oscar and that for Best Costume Design (Black and White), probably for Davis’ collection of ill fitting dresses and frills.

Despite modest reviews in the early 1960s, the movie was a box office smash and inspired other crazy-old-bat tales including Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte which also starred Davis.

Whatever Happened quickly found its place in popular culture. There are references to it in a French

and Saunders comedy routine, Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the Simpsons.

There are several video games where the heroine is a certain Baby Jane, a 1920s Chicago style female big shot who wears tattered dresses and ill-fitting cocktail outfits as she machine-guns her opponents on screen. The title of the movie is parodied in the American gay TV soap opera Rick and Steve where one episode is titled Whatever Happened to Baby James?

Popular Conspiracy Theories The 2004 tsunami was man-made

Or did UFOs try to do us a favour?

Everyone knows that an enormous 9.0 earthquake triggered the gigantic tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands in south Asia. Or do they? Some conspiracy theorists believe that the US and Indian militaries deliberately caused the tsunami with electromagnetic pulse technology. At the time these opinions were freely expressed by Al-Jazeera and have filled certain internet websites ever since.

One popular theory is that the United States government knew of

the disaster ahead of time but failed to warn Asians in affected countries.

So-called evidence is provided by the fact that the American Navy base situated on the Indian island of Diego Garcia was alerted and escaped unscathed from the disaster.

Another suggestion is that aliens caused the disaster as a way of correcting the planet’s wobbly rotation. There’s even a “photo” of a Martian-like character observing the tsunami crashing into the Indonesian coast. Some scientists are now

claiming that the wobbly rotation of the earth has been corrected since the massive underwater quake.

Orthodox scientists have ridiculed the claims, pointing out that the weapons-testing theory holds no water because of the amount of energy needed to cause such a quake. You would need so much energy and not even a billion tons would do it. A wave activity might conceivably be triggered very close to the scene of a giant explosion, but its effect would be only a tiny fraction of the tsunami which hit the Asian coastline in December 2004.

Undeterred, conspiracy theorists have moved on to the possibility that the tsunami was caused by a secret Indian nuclear explosion, duly reported by the Jerusalem Post.

The idea is that India, in its heated nuclear race with Pakistan, received sophisticated nuclear assistance from the United States and wanted to test the apparatus. If thousands of Muslims were killed, India and the United States wouldn’t be too concerned, goes the argument.

In the last two years, focus has again switched to the UFOs. According to some observers, UFO sightings before the earthquake and tsunami were very unusual for that part of the world. The United States Geological Survey and Ocean Monitoring Agency knew about the imminent earthquake but decided to do nothing. Warnings could have been given to countries in the region, but in fact none were made.

Are we already controlled by beings from outer space?

As ever, the conspiracy enthusiasts are not united but put forward a variety of competing or even flatly contradictory claims.

On the one hand, the Americans and the Indians wanted to explode a nuclear device to keep one jump ahead of the Pakistanis. But, on the other hand, the idea was to kill as many Muslims as possible throughout the continent. Or, if UFOs were responsible, maybe they were demonstrating their capacity to control earthly governments or, on the other hand, just doing us a favour by correcting our wobbly tilt.

We’ll just have to wait until the next time.

Local Sports Jack climbs that beanstalk!

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees Lots of weather out there today but with an early start, we managed to escape the rain.

It was a great day for golf and a day for a great score. A record breaking score in fact!

Peter Thomas must be a fantastic swing coach. We can only assume his mentoring efforts with the little woman have paid off well as we see J.P. make it to the podium once again. Another high handicapper did well and we give second place to our mate Steve Coghlan with a fine 41 point round. Our near pin was won by Jeff Acheson, but had to settle for a par.

What can you say? The man was on fire today and set our house record for low gross with an astonishingly good round for 45 points.

Those came off a five handicap and our longtime mate Jack Grindvold played like a pro (in fact, better!) for an easy win today at Green Valley. Nice shootin’ buddy, when you’re hot you’re hot! Ever considered the Asian Tour?

Phoenix Gold – Stableford – White Tees I will bet that a lot of guys wish they had played here today.

The course was just stunning, it really would be hard to find better condition at any price.

All the signage from the last months L.E.T. tournament were still up to add to the ambience of this championship golf course. It was so good in fact, it got the better of most golfers and the scoring here was actually pretty darn poor.

Pierre had a mere 20 points on the card and still was rewarded with a third (are you kidding me?), as well as our Caddy Smile near pin. I was surprised to see Walter Baechli turn in just 28 on the scorecard, he is usually a mid-thirties man at worse. Must have been tough out there, Walter!

Lee Short was the man of the match and just 31 Stableford points was enough for first. Lee and his buddy Louie are joining us regularly during their brief two week holiday from Oz. Good to have you lads around to reduce the average age here!

BuraphaA & B – Stableford – White Tees Burapha is actually one of the closest golf courses to get to from TGC as just 22 minutes will put you in the two kilometre driveway to the clubhouse. It is an outstanding course but unfortunately overshadowed by neighbour Jack Nicklaus’ Laem Chabang.

They host several Asian Tour tournaments here and G.M. Mike is a great host and manager. Condition of the course was excellent, and usually is.

There were overcast skies for our journey up highway 7 this morning but it was a blessing as it kept things a bit cooler. The last group got round in the nick of time and just beat the afternoon showers! It pays to get out of bed 20 minutes early!

Dave Ferris is the D.O.G. for the next 10 days or so as Capt. Phil takes a break (well-earned I must say) back to Australia to stay on top of things back home. Thanks very big to Mr. Ferris for filling in for us! What would I do without you guys?

Lee is back on the podium but this time a bit short, 34 points is only good for third.

On to second place and we find “The Master of Burapha” Jimmy Brackett turning in a card of 35. A bit light for Mr.

John and Graham win score fest at Bangpakong

by Derek Brook Bangpakong – St As we get into the month the Tropical Golfers took a much anticipated trip to Bangpakong. Many of the golfers were eager to use discount coupons they received the last time. Not easy to keep track of that little slip for over a month and maybe not all did or remembered to bring it.

Never mind, 22 golfers signed up for the longer ride to this course, among the “favorite” courses on our list.

Bangpakong was in its usual excellent condition.

Wide (most of the time), well groomed fairways and greens that run pretty much as expected usually provide plenty of good scores. This day proved to be the same – and how! Don't take the course for granted though, most golfers still lost a ball or three somewhere on the course. And it was HOT, as in really, really, with nary a hint of breeze. Still, when all the counting was done if you

Pierrel on the left and Buckingham on right didn't at least make handicap you were part of the audience not part of the show. Last Friday at Treasure Hill we reported the course won. This week the Tropical Golfers regained some pride.

A-Flight (0-17): Tying for the best score of the day, John Pierrel (c/h 15) took first place with an amazing 43 points, beating Paul Sharples (16) with the better finish.

Right behind was Andre Van Dyk (17) showing he has the form back with 42 points, and then big Steve Truelove (11)

with 39 points, getting the nod over Brian Parish(12) also with 39. Great scoring!

B-Flight (18+): Good scores but slightly lower than A-Flight saw Graham “Buckers” Buckingham (26) win his flight with a fine 40 points. Next Nigel Perry (24) with 38 points took second, followed by Mashi Kaneta (18) earning 37 points, and Tom Herrington (18) with 36.

Best Nine (non-winner): The best half rounds went to Brian Parish and Takeshi Hakozaki.

Jim as he knows this course like the back of his hand. Have you seen the back of Jimmy’s hand?

The win today is given to one of the most improved golfers over the last couple of years. He has the potential for much better scoring and should be a single figure dude, but such is golf. He knows he has it in him but a 37 out here was all Darren Stanton delivered today. Darren is a lanky, Dustin Johnson type and hits the ball a mile. Sometimes it even goes where he is aiming. Potential aplenty, just do it mate!

Results: 1st – Darren Stanton (15) 37 points 2nd – Jimmy Brackett(6) 35 points 3rd – Lee Short (20) 34 points The Emerald – Stableford – Yellow Tees The Emerald is a humble little track that can eat you up if you get complacent. This Faldo-Muirhead layout sits on a beautiful piece of land near Ban Chang in heavy forest with rolling hills. These elevation changes are what make this course such a lovely golfing experience. Those four par-3 holes are all a fair and beautiful test of the short game.

There is no fancy clubhouse here, just a fine golf course

We had a light rain on the first couple of holes but the fine mist did no real harm. Two very short par fours start the round here and I like the fact that it does give you a chance to warm up at least! By the par-5 fourth hole the sun broke through and welcomed us to the drinks stand and par-3 fifth hole.

On to the scoring, and TGC regular and longtime supporter Fred Birch turned in a solid 39 for his efforts today. That 39 would usually get you a win here and I would take that score any day at The Emerald. It was a very tight comp and just one stroke better was Kevin Wood with 40 circled on the card.

Another stroke up the ladder, Lee Short was on top once more with a fine 41 to add to his win on Tuesday. The Lee and Louis show was on a roll as his mate Louis Schlebusch nicked our Caddy Smile near

pin! The D.O.G. got all the boys safely there and back, and there was no extra charge for the tour of the temple! Thank you Khun Dave!

Younger wins by a whisker Bankpakong A keen group of 14 golfers headed up Highway 7 to the marvelous Bangpakong golf course. The conditions were sunny with a gentle breeze about, and it seemed perfect for good scoring, which proved to be the case. The course was in great nick with spongey fairways and nicely paced and true greens.

Greetings were handed out to Bill Steinmann returning from the US, as well as Patrick Poussier and Takeshi.

A farewell was given to Graham Laurie, you will be missed Patch.

So only one division today and it was the highly competitive Steve Younger who snuck home by one point from evergreen Frank Riley.

Frank finished second by way of a countback from Jayson Schembri, who was seen staring up a palm tree on the 18th, wondering if his ball was going to drop out of that palm tree… which of course it never did, thus finishing his chance of victory.

Local Sports Buffalo Bill beats the demons

Khao Kheow With a smallish group of 14 golfers, we headedup the highway to the popular Khao Kheow golf course, where previous night rain left the course a little damp. White tees were selected and lift, clean and place was evoked given the aforementioned overnight precipitation. The conditions were overcast most of the day. No rain was evident even though most of us got wet heading to The Growling Swan in the morning.

Greetings were handed out to Rod Weekes, Makito Homma and Lorraine Percy who was returning after a short stint in Queensland.

Cooky will now have to revert back to behaving himself.

Farewell’s were given to both Terry Dreierand our

regular visitor, Eric “The Judge” Black. So only one division today, and it was Bill Steinmann who forgot about his putting demons for the time being to record a very handy 42 points, which saw him home by a comfortable margin of three points. Bill was happy to drain a few lengthy putts to give him some much needed confidence with the flat stick going forward.

Only theory for the sluggish start after conjecture from his peers is that possibly he was early to bed.

Course conditions promote big scores Phoenix Gold Golfers would have awoken Tuesday morning to light drizzle and grey skies, with the possibility of a wet day of golf. Early tee-off groups of the 106 players including 12 ladies, may have had to deal with some light rain for a few holes, but from 8 am on perfect conditions were the order of the day. With the overnight rain, it was decided to play lift, clean and place

on the closely mown surfaces, to avoid mud balls following good shots.

There were a host of exceptional performances, so difficult to single out a star player of the day with several nominees.

Top points score of the day came from the B Flight for handicaps 14 - 19, with John Sherriff (18) signing for a spectacular 47 points. A series of countbacks was required

by J Olsen Silky Oak Golf Club All was peaceful as we boarded the bus to make our way to Silky Oaks for another challenging game of golf.

With 15 players all eager to get hold of the coveted Monthly Mug! As per usual this course was in perfect condition, with out doubt this will be the jewel in Pattaya’s crown. With its 5 par threes and par 5’s that all look impossible to conquer it sets a challenge for all that dare to take it on.

As we congregated on the first tee nerves come into play as the first drive has a decent water carry, with the prospect of going in the water that early plays on a lot of peoples minds, drop zones can be used if you (as a society) choose to play. It is a 150 yard carry off the white tees and with the yellow tee another 30 odd yards further back.

The course was in great shape with superb fairways offering perfect lies for those who managed to reach them.

Again all that the course has to offer is perfect and for a hack golfer like me I find it a challenge. Greens are good caddies are excellent.

It will be a brave man who nominates the yellow tees on this course!

With the low numbers we only played one flight today.

Jim Bell was first past the post returning with an excellent score of 69 net. Martin Todd and Jim Beresfordcame in got 2nd spot with 41, and a point further back was Manny Defteros (13).

C Flight for handicaps 20 winner Sami Sarajavi (21) was well clear of his nearest rival, John Seton (23) who had 40 points, while the bronze position went to Roy Steinbach (25) with 39 points.

Ladies division was a hotly contested affair with three players on 44 points, Nat Rukkid (13) with 25 points on the back 9, which included an eagle and a birdie, saw her get the top spot ahead of

Back at the bar we welcomed Terry Dreier, Mick Beresford and Jim Bell. For those who think that guys come in to win the big games, I can assure you all that that

was not the case as Jim Bell rang the bell shouting all a drink. Well done, Jim, we hope you come more often and win more often.

We then tucked into a good feed that the girls had prepared for us, thank you!

D-For the Charity Dog was once again the recipient of generous golfer’s handouts, with almost all players giving something toward the funds raised by the Growling Swan golf bar for the less advantaged in Pattaya. All donors are thanked for their continued support of this fine charity drive.

The Growling Swan is a friendly golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers young and old, male or female to have a hit on any of our weekly outings. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya.

Families need pets Parents already know that their kids are happier and healthier when a pet is part of the household. Pets provide companionship, comfort, incentive to be active and nurturing.

One additional benefit was highlighted by children themselves in a small survey. Asked what advice

they would give to unpopular classmates and other children to help them make friends, they didn’t say some cool toy or the latest computer game; the number one answer was, “Get a pet.”

That cogent advice from the mouths of babes applies on many

levels. In addition to bringing youngsters closer together through shared interests, things to talk about, etc., pets also provide a source of comfort to children. Ask any young pet owners what they do when they are sad, angry or afraid, and most will admit turning to their pets.

Having a dog or cat also is a great opportunity to learn how to care for others. Looking after a pet teaches the necessary ability to nurture, which doesn’t come naturally in children or adults. People need a way to practice being caregivers when they're young. It’s especially important for boys because taking care of an animal isn't seen as a 'girl' thing like babysitting, playing house, or playing with dolls.

Beyond the companionship, bonding and nurturing aspects of having pets, there also is an important health benefit: it actually decreases a child's risk of developing certain allergies. A study of nearly 500 boys and girls under age 7 found that the children who were exposed to two or more dogs or cats as babies were less than half as likely to develop common allergies—like pet and dust-mite allergens as well as outdoor allergens such as ragweed and grass. Other studies suggest that early exposure to pets may decrease a child's risk of developing asthma.

So for a happier, healthier family, get a pet…or two.

This lovely mum and son combination were rescued from our local temple. Celia had 3 kittens 2 of which have already been re-homed, leaving just this little black and white rascal Wilson. This "Purrfect pair" would love to go to a new home together if possible.

This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now, he just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin.

He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention, but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.

Temple kitten 1

This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.

This next lovely kitten is an unusual ginger girl as most Ginger cats are boys. Just like her sister above, she is lively, friendly and very naughty as most kittens are. It would be nice to re-home her with one of her brothers and sisters.

Cough it Up

Like humans, dogs cough now and again to get rid of dust, germs, etc. But if your dog can’t stop coughing, it may be an infection that needs treatment.

Has your pet recently been to the groomer, a shelter, or playground? Was he around another sick dog? He may have kennel cough, which is highly contagious but not serious as long as he’s eating well and acting normal. If the cough isn’t gone in a week or so, have him checked out by your vet.
