THE CURATOR
J
uneteenth is a national celebration of the emancipation of Black Americans that were enslaved in the United States. In recognition of the boundless beauty, authenticity and power of Black Americans, specifically the descendants of American chattel slavery, Indy based visual artist Khaila King curated a Juneteenth Photography showcase hosted at PARADOX. This showcase featured the work of eight Black American Midwest photographers who were tasked to share and produce work that depicted their interpretation of the source of Black excellence,
survival and innovation...joy! Black joy is endless, it can’t be replicated, it can’t be stolen. Black people will always be the unique and creative individuals that they are due to the love, light and joy that exists within them as beings. Black Americans can not be broken, their joy cannot be taken. This showcase was dedicated to highlighting this and because Blackness is not monolithic, one Black American’s interpretation of Black joy might differ from the next. In this zine you will find stories told through portraiture, fashion, and creative direction that have Black joy at its center.

ALIZA BROWN
FUJINON JON
Aliza Brown is an Indianapolis based creative who found an interest in photography at a young age. After high school, her interest began to flourish. During that time she was able to capture and develop relationships with creatives all over Indianapolis. What she enjoys most about being a photographer is witnessing her subjects’ reactions to her work. Being able to make someone feel beautiful is a gift that she doesn’t take for granted.
Based in Chicago and born in Baltimore born, Jonathan Burns is an editorial, lifestyle and portrait film and digital photographer. His passion for photography sparked with the passing of his father, a photo enthusiast himself. It was through photography Jon found a way to connect and cope with the passing. After leaving home for Chicago to pursue his education, Jon’s passion for photography grew exponentially, eventually leading him to teaching himself the ins-and-outs of film photography. Now, his focus has shifted to furthering the representation of Black individuals in editorial-style photographs. Some of Jon’s work has been featured in editorials for brands such as Vogue Italia, YEEZY for Highsnobiety, and Escro Market for RSVP Gallery in Chicago amongst others.
