CHARLES & RON TALK NEW YORK FASHION WEEK by Maria Michela Charles & Ron flagship store, 58D Republic Street, Valletta www.charlesandron.com page 18
PAVLI MAGAZINE
This exceptional duo have been around for quite a while, brainstorming ideas and turning creativity into a tangible form, but these last five years they have been the talk of the town. With New York Fashion Week on their agenda, local fashion shows, and esteemed clientele, Charles & Ron are transforming the fashion scene in Malta to a hub where the aura of art can be perceived in the textiles. ALL FASHION SAVVY PEOPLE KNOW THAT NEW YORK IS KEY IN THE FASHION WORLD, SO TO HAVE TWO LOCAL DESIGNERS PRESENTING THEIR COLLECTIONS AT THE NYFW IS SOMETHING BIG. HOW DID YOU LAND SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY?
We had been invited to participate a couple of years back, but back then the timing was not right. Then, in 2013 we decided to accept the invitation and worked very hard to make it happen. This was our third season in New York.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO PRESENT ALL YOUR HARD WORK IN ONE OF THE FOUR FASHION CAPITALS?
It has always been a dream of ours to feature our collection in New York. Being able to turn this dream into reality is fantastic. It feels great to be part of such a vibrant and important Fashion Week, and we are very proud to show our Malta inspired collections to an international audience. 2015 HAS PROVED TO BE AN IMPORTANT YEAR AS YOU ARE THE WINNERS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN FASHION PRIZE. WOULD YOU DEFINE IT AS THE KEY MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?
Yes definitely, winning the MFP was a great satisfaction. It feels amazing to know that our hard work and dedication is also noticed overseas. The MFP is an amazing opportunity to broaden our network and we have had the opportunity to meet very inspiring people who page 19
PAVLI MAGAZINE
WWW.CHARLESANDRON.COM
are at the top of their fields in the fashion industry. The MFP will be celebrated with a very big event next year in France, which is supported by the House of Chanel and also Dior. We are looking forward to be part of this event. WHEN YOU DESIGN WHAT DRIVES YOUR INSPIRATION? WHAT IS THE STYLE YOU AIM FOR IN YOUR DESIGNS? WHAT KIND OF RELATIONSHIP ARE YOU TRYING TO CREATE FOR YOUR AUDIENCE?
Our main source of inspiration is our home country; Malta. Malta’s history, architecture, culture, heritage and surroundings drive our inspiration. We love Malta and our Mediterranean lifestyle, and we aim to make page 20
PAVLI MAGAZINE
our clients feel part of that. Our design ethic is to create beautiful modern, feminine, and wearable styles. Our leather bags and accessory collections also reflect such ethics. NEW YORK HAS BROADENED NOT ONLY YOUR CUSTOMER NETWORK, BUT ALSO YOUR REPUTATION. HAS THIS PAVED YOUR WAY TO OTHER INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES?
Yes definitely, we were recently invited to exhibit a collection during Paris Fashion Week, but due to the fact that we were opening our second shop in Malta we had to pass. Hopefully we will be able to take on this opportunity next fashion week.
“We love Malta and our Mediterranean lifesyle, and we aim to make our clients feel part of that.” If you have missed Charles & Ron’s SS2016 collection, feast your eyes on some of the designs featured here. Supporting local talent is a must, but when local talent turns to wow-factor it is something to revere.

Street Style from New York to LA by Stephanie Xerri Agius From Style in Transit www.styleintransit.com After the Far East and South East Asia, it was time to tread into more familiar territory. Enter the States this year. By this time, I had mustered enough nerve to photograph people’s outfits.
page 53
PAVLI MAGAZINE
The language barrier was a problem no longer and people were very approachable. I chose New York and Boston on the East Coast, and San Francisco and Los Angeles on the West. I focused my attention on individuality and personality exuded through their attire, rather than on the necessity of being clad in the latest trends. There were a couple of them who did seem to go the extra mile; while chatting with them, they admitted that they sometimes dress in certain ways to get noticed. Imagine my pleasure in that. Whether it was New York or Los Angeles, the people I approached all had a story to tell, so a positive outcome of this endeavour was sharing life experiences, and doing what many recommend whilst traveling: mingling with the locals or settlers in the cities. In a sense, taking street style photos has become an entry point to this meaningful and rewarding experience. All of the cities yielded an eclectic mix of styles and time was flexible; the people who kindly obliged to have their photos taken willingly gave up 15 minutes of their time. Indeed, we had a good chat and some laughs during the photoshoot. From an exercise fraught with dread over intruding upon someone’s personal space, it has now evolved into an enjoyable and enriching activity. page 61

STREET STYLE STORIES
ANNA (San Francisco): Fashion Design Student
#1
When I saw Anna, she was chatting with a friend in Union Square. Her choice of outfit (full skirt with a black scarf draped across her shoulders to keep warm from the sudden wind) caught my eye from across the square. As we chatted, I discovered that she too is very keen on fashion, and it turns out she is studying at one of the most prestigious schools in the US, the Academy of Art of San Francisco.
SASHA (San Francisco): Musician I must say it was sheer luck that I saw Sasha. Reason being, I was walking down Union Square station and gaped at the incredible amount of people waiting in line just to ride the cable car (which happens every day!). I stopped Sasha for some photos when I almost bumped into her. Sasha is a vibrant upcoming musician who was incidentally shooting a movie when we decided to take some photos. You may follow her on Instagram @sleepysash, as her photos are one burst of creativity after another.
#2
MEERA (New York): Fashion Blogger I also met Meera on a different part of the campus and I am glad I did, as I discovered she is a fellow blogger! She hails from Bombay but calls New York a second home. On that day she was scheduled to meet her sister, but I caught her in time for a quick round of photos in front of one of Columbia’s library. You can follow her blog: www.momentswithmeera.com page 62
PAVLI MAGAZINE
#3
KIM (Venice Beach, LA): Actress Westwards to LA, I decided to find outfit inspiration along the Venice Beach Boardwalk, which is a daily festival of life: from rappers to street artists, from surfers to skateboarders, you’ll find it all. The attire is usually relaxed and casual, with that not-trying-too-hard-butlooking-cool attitude, as was Kim’s case. After spending a morning by the beach, a breezy light-coloured jumpsuit was a perfect choice for a look that is put-together but laidback.
#5
JAIYI (Cambridge Town, Boston Metropolitan Area): Harvard Graduate, owns a start-up business Entrepreneurial and striking, Jaiyi emerged out of the train station at Harvard. As I saw her wearing an allblack look in the middle of summer, I knew I had to speak to her. She told me that she is also interested in blogging and it shows, as her sense of style speaks for itself.
page 63
PAVLI MAGAZINE
#6
IRINA (New York): Model & Student I spotted Irina as she was touring the campus of Columbia University. We chatted about her aspirations in the model industry and about the allure of living in New York City. Being a model, she definitely required no direction in having her photos taken. You can find her on Instagram @irina_vici.
#7
SMITHLEY (Cambridge, Boston): Model & Student One of the few males I stopped on my travels, Smithley caught my attention by his unassuming but on point all-denim look. His skateboard and kicks complete the outfit perfectly and I asked him to include the former in the photos. Like Irina, Smithley is an aspiring model so despite his seeming shyness, he had no issue with a few poses in front of the camera. page 64

#8
STEPHANIE (Pasedena, LA): Hair Stylist
I came across Stephanie while visiting the charming Pasadena, the ninth-largest city in Los Angeles county. I recall that day being one of the hottest during my stay so I was speechless as to how Stephanie managed to look so fresh and upbeat in her black(-and-red) getup. The polished details such as the floppy hat, the belt (to cinch her waist), and her fringed bag reflect her eye for curating outfits. Add to that the red lip, the red stems in her cat eye sunglasses, her red nails, and touches of red in her tattoos prove that red and black can work well. Her play with proportions also makes her look so glamorous!

A NAUTICAL LOVE AFFAIR by Maria Michela
WHAT DEFINES YOUR BRAND FROM THE REST?Â
Our brand differs itself on many aspects. The most essential part, in our view, is that the brand is entirely made in Europe. The items are designed in Malta, the fabric originates from Netherlands and coloured in Austria, the label and buttons are from Italy, and production in entirely handmade in Hungary. The packaging is designed to be reusable, and is made from recycled paper. This marks our brand as being of high quality due to the longmaking process. Besides this, our intent is to keep surprising our clients by reengineering clothing to address a man in better ways. And lastly we are firm believers that quantity should never substitute quality. DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR TRADEMARK WHICH INSTANTLY ATTRACTS CONSUMERS?Â
Royal Marine Wear is a registered trademark, that we intent to keep working on to develop and growth over the next many years.
Royal Marine is the new underwear brand which encloses in them a love for anything synonymous with the sea. Co-founder and designer Kris Jes Petersen scheduled some time for me to introduce this exciting brand with a story to tell. page 66
