Seven is my favorite number. I don’t know if it’s because I was born in July (seventh month of the year) or I am simply attracted to the look and power of that number. I am beyond happy to publish the 7th Issue of Pavli Magazine during the most exciting period for all fashion and style enthusiasts living in Malta. It’s Malta Fashion Week 2014, that time of the year when we celebrate fashion and we gossip about clothes, shoes, hair and make-up for 7 days in a row. This issue is dedicated to creativity and personal experience, bringing some of the international shows from Australia and Spain closer to you. We also have Caroline Paris, talking about what her role at the Malta Fashion Week is. Maria writes about Moschino’s controversial AW 14 collection and the message Jeremy Scott was trying to give us. Get inspired by summer 2014 trends and work out your own style. Go on and snap a selfie and you and your could win a VIP Ticket to the most talked about party Champagne Wars at Café del Mar. Now go, enjoy the magazine and the Malta Fashion Week and get ready for Summer Madness! Love Pavli xxx #pavlistyle @pavlistyle www.pavlistyle.com

What you need to know about
Caroline Paris
The winner of the Best Fashion Stylist Awards in 2013 is talking about her role at Malta Fashion Week 2014. Tell us about your role during Malta Fashion Week? My role during Malta Fashion week is actually threefold – I will be there as a fashion journalist/ blogger documenting my outfits and publishing a review on the fashion of the night. I will be part of the Malta Fashion Week Team and my role is primarily that of handling International Designers for the Friday event and last I will be a stylist backstage together with Marisa Grima at most of the events which means coordinating any fittings needed, outfit changes, jewellery and accessories etc. How does your day look like during Malta Fashion Week? Well for me the part of the day related to fashion week starts at about 16:30 and ends at about 2 a.m, I will probably get to the day’s show location at about 16:30, see what needs to be done backstage, take photos and then the show begins at 20:30. After the show ends, it is then time to go home and start transferring photos, writing my articles and so on.
The best moment during previous Malta Fashion Week you would like share? Well it was actually on the awards night and that was winning Best Fashion Stylist, I was so surprised, so happy, so thrown..I can’t really describe all the emotions. During fashion week ironically my best and worst moment was actually throughout the International Designers show – there were a number of hiccups but we managed to solve each and every one of them and the satisfaction after was immense. What designer/show are you looking forward to the most? Well I can’t pick – I’m actually truly equally excited about each and every one of them for a particular reason or other. What do you wear during Malta Fashion Week? Hahaha a range of different outfits ranging from eccentric, to classic, to edgy..I already have most of them planned I like to create something unique..imo if it’s not allowed during fashion week, it’s never allowed.

L ’A m eric ano i n Italy Jeremy Scott’s inaugural Moschino collection will make your stomach churn. by MARIA MICHAELA
ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2014
041
Jeremy Scott’s first collection for Moschino is a reflection on today’s excessive consumer society. The creative designer is consciously telling us today’s society is ‘raised by television’. Today’s society yearns for the irrelevant and for the junk excess. 042
ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2014
Maria Michela, twenty-something Mediterranean lady with a love for everything artistic and creative. I get a thrill at trying different foods, travelling and drinking tea. My dog is my life, and Dolce & Gabbana are my definition of fashion artists.
At the runway show, his aim was to instill a specific experience for the audience. Scott’s aim was to appeal to the kid in us, precisely a
a kid who tantrums for McDonald’s, who would eat chocolate for breakfast, dinner and lunch, and who delights in seeing Spongebob. kid in American society:
The final closing dress, however, was a wedding dress with printed nutrition facts. Such an ending was not a coincidence, but a crafty decision. After seeing the McDonald’s outfits, Spongebob dresses and the maxi dresses with printed chocolate wrapping, the ending number jots us to reality about these snack’s side effects. The fact that Scott chose a wedding dress and had printed nutrition facts on it is a bold statement that he does not care about their side effects - he feels as one with the inner kid desires in him.

“IT’S ALL IN THE DNA” 044
ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2014
He knew exactly which buttons to press, as his collections are all over the social media platforms and inundating magazines and music videos. Take for example, Rita Ora’s new music video for her latest song ‘I will never let you down’, she promotes the Moschino brand throughout, with the excessive number of bracelets, caps, rings and belts reading the brand name.
Scott is known as ‘fashion’s latest rebel’ by the New York Times, and no wonder. This collection proved that his imagination and tangible designs are going against the stereotypical food fashion world – a world linked with salads and dietary products. Scott’s appearance at the end of the fashion show wearing a T-shit with the slogan ‘I don’t speak Italian, but I speak Moschino’, brings together all the elements already mentioned. When this ready-to-wear brand was set up, Franco Moschino played a lot on the colorful and eccentric designs. Moschino was a mix between high couture and high street. His aim was to drift away from the aesthetically beautiful clothes his counterparts (like Dolce e Gabbana and Valentino) were creating. With his first collection proving to be a huge success, Scott has many other ideas in store for Moschino. Like the brand’s founder, Scott tries to move away from the aesthetically beautiful clothes and choose humour in return. “It’s all in the DNA,” he proclaimed in a recent interview. SCREW THE 5 YEAR PLAN!
MY #VAMFF EXPERIENCE by Raisa Tabone
I love to-do lists. I create one for each day as soon as I wake up or before I go to bed - and there’s nothing more satisfying than finalising a task and crossing it off my list! I’ll also grudgingly admit that I have, in the past, devised a 5 year plan... and loved doing it. A true Taurus at heart, I thrive best when I am in a stable environment and when I have a clear understanding of where I’m headed in life and how I plan to get there - so deciding to leave my home, family, job, friends.. country! to jet off to the other side of the planet with no definite plans was decidedly out of character, and most definitely not part of my 5 year plan. 046

“But I did it. Here I am, in Melbourne. Australia.”
048
ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2014
One thing I did plan on doing, however, was to make the most out of the budding fashion scene here in Melbourne. I have come to discover that there is somewhat of a historic rivalry between Australia’s two main cities Sydney and Melbourne, and what Melbourne claims to have over Sydney - and the rest of the country for that matter - is better food, art and fashion! The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) immediately popped up on my google search page as the premium fashion event in Melbourne. Formerly known as the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Week, it attracts thousands of people and is responsible for orchestrating a week of runway shows, cultural events and workshops. I applied back in November when I was still in the process of booking my flights and sorting out my VISA. In February, I got news that I was accepted for the roles of Backstage Assistant and Front of House Usher - I was ecstatic. I was chosen together with another 349 girls out of 1000+ applicants! Having assisted in a number of fashion events in Malta, I knew what to expect during the shows - but nothing prepared me for the welcome us volunteers received. We were first asked to attend a brief at the Sofitel luxury hotel on the stylish Collins Street, and not only did they brief us on everything we could possibly need to know - but a whole score of people came up on stage and thanked us... continuously. The panel included event CEO Graeme Lewsey, Herald Sun Fashion Reporter and Stylist Anna Byrne, Risk Management Consultant Bill Coleby, Volunteer Manager June Tran, and the hilarious backstage manager Daniel Pizzato - who also held the position of backstage manager at London Fashion week for 4 seasons. All volunteers were rostered for 2 4 shifts. I was assigned 3 shifts, the first of which being a collections shift. This meant that I was stationed in the collections venue where all the amazing clothes, shoes, accessories were stored. We taped shoes to our heart’s content and generally helped with everything that needed to be done in preparation for the opening event - presented by David Jones (Australian high-end department store chain) and supported by Vogue Australia. I basically got to hang out with clothes designed by the likes of Dion Lee and Zimmermann, among others - so I’m not complaining. ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2014
049
My second shift was by far my favourite. I was stationed as a Front of House Usher for the Grand Showcase featuring Australia’s own Camilla Frank presenting her AW 14 collection ‘And God Created Women’. Spectacularly creative and vibrant, the images only tell half of the story. The runway show was accompanied by musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra led by composer Jonathan Dreyfus. The brass and percussion sounds, coupled with the multicoloured runway floor, definitely made for a very atmospheric runway show - not to mention I was seated opposite Eva Longoria and Megan Gale.

What followed was a complete change of scenery - dramatic morphed into simplicity! We had one hour to escort everyone out, realign the seats, and prepare new gift bags. The second runway show was presented by Frankie Magazine. Models wearing Gorman, Leonard St, Alpha 60, Jolet, Kuwaii, Livid Arena and Bul circled around huge plotted plants on their way down the runway. This show’s highlight, for me, were the beauty looks - graphic liner and sharp white pony tails were in perfect harmony with the clothes.
ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2014
053
For my third and final shift, I was again assigned a Front of House position for the National Graduate Showcase show, and the Independent Runway show. A total of 12 designers were hand-picked from leading design schools

in Australia for the Graduates show, and these collections felt like the most daring and expressive of the week, simply because the designers truly focused on showcasing their creativity, rather than commerciality.

The Independent Runway show featured Australian contemporary designers Christina Exie, Emma Mulholland, From Britten, Garth Cook, Kathryn Beker, Neo Dia, One Fell Swoop, Tettmann.Doust, and Zhivago.

“Working at VAMFF was awesome. The organisers not only did a spectacular job, but also made sure us volunteers were having fun and getting the most out of our working hours. This whole experience might not have been listed on my 5 year plan, but it was definitely a welcome deviation! Visit www.vamff.com.au for more information on the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.
