Friendship, defined from Webster's Dictionary as, the state of being friends, or a friendly feeling. Friends, on the other hand, are defined as people whom one knows well and is fond of.
The second definition states a friend as an ally, supporter, or sympathizer. My personal definition of whatfriendship is, is a feeling or emotion expressed in such a way that another feels wanted and important, a relationship between a person or persons where everyone has some companion to talk to when their in need of one. I would define friends as people whom you can have several types of relations with and feel several emotions for that person. Someone that one might go to in time of need....show more content...
Most of the time that results because they are usually the ones you talk to the most so eventually the two become close and they find themselves expressing their feelings to each other without even realizing that they are becoming closer every time. But, if you aren't married then you still probably go to your best friends and tell them everything going on between you and your lover. Parents and children I think fit together on this subject. Parents and children create a great friendship over time. Throughout a child's life and especially through their adolescent years, children tend to pull away from their parents making it hard to actually establish a friendship with them. Teenagers experience knew things that they don't want their parents to know about or they just don't feel comfortable talking to their parents about it. Parents are the same way. There are some things that children don't need know about. However, over the years when a child's parents become unable to take care of themselves, then the children take of them and all their bills and other things. Children learn to appreciate their parents in life and learn that they can turn to their parents a lot for support. The same goes for being close to their siblings. After all the meanness gets out of them, they realize the greatest friends end up being the people they used to beat up on as kids. Friendship is a crazy thing. Some people you consider closer

Love, Love, Love. We all think about it, dream about it, sing about it, and even lose sleep worrying about it, but why? Love is such a small word paired with a vital meaning. It's universal, easy to spell, difficult to define, but impossible to live without. When we don't have it, we search for it, when we find it, we don't know what to do with it, when we have it, we fear losing it. Love is the constant source of happiness and sorrow. I am young and I haven't a clue as to what love is, let alone what falling in love is. However, I have my ideas of what love is like. I have never witnessed the beauty of people falling in love, or the severity of those falling out of love, so what is love?
Love in general could be frightening. Some...show more content...
I think falling in love with someone happens when you least expect it to, when you're too busy focusing on other aspects of your life. This is where fate comes into play. That specific person was led to you for some unknown reason. Out of the blues, it's like your knight in shining amour that you have longed to be with finally found his/her way to you. There are people in this world that think they may never fall in love again. You fall at times, but you get back up. You will love again, and you will also trust again. You have to simply let things get themselves done, that's when you know it's meant to be, because destiny took its course, and while you were too busy doing something else, the love of your life came along.
Love dates way back to when the world began. In reality, we really have no idea what love truly is. Raising questions like, is it even real? We watch love movies, read romance novels, but that's the sugar–coated, sweet and simple version of it. Meeting someone, fall in love, get married, have kids, spend the rest of your lives together. What about the suffering we have to endure when falling in love? Risking everything for that one person? And even when we feel we've reached the end of the road, this person has the power to leave us at any given moment. We put ourselves out there with the chance they can break us apart.
Love, as it is with everything,

After careful consideration, I feel it to be more appropriate to discuss my position in the sex, gender, and sexuality subgroups as I feel it has had the most influence on my postitionality. First, I am a female. Although females make up the slight majority of the world, we are not the dominant group, as we live in a patriarchal society in the United States of America. It is definitely a "man's world" as far as dominance, advantages, and benefits. Sometimes men and women get treated differently for similar actions; women may get criticized, whereas men may get praised. When I served in the U. S. Army I got overlooked for promotion twice due to me being a female in a male dominated occupation until the late Staff Sergeant Tompkins realized...show more content...
I am Caucasian, or white as most people say. White is and has been the dominant group in the U. S. because of access to resources, power, oppression of other races, etc. The majority of the time, I have not known if my race had been advantageous, but more than likely it has been. For instance, I do not know for certain if I got a better price on a vehicle, the better interest rate on a loan, or a mortgage due to me being white, but it is possible. Most of the systematical discrimination against other races is not sharply known to whites until they start looking at information, statistics, and studies that provide evidence that this discrimination happened. There may be other aspects I worry about, but I do not worry about my race putting me at a disadvantage or risk of being mistreated or discriminated against. Other than occasionally being thought of by people of another race as being naive, inexperienced, or a born racist because I'm white, there have not been any other negative impacts in my life due to my race, White privilege is existent whether I see it or not. I feel that the more knowledge I have of its existence and to what extent, the more I can control how white privilege affects my life and those around

Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the "act of forgiving; state of being forgiven, disposition or willingness to forgive". But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that trueforgiveness is a quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true. Only a humble human being can attain the quality to completely...show more content...
I found that I forgave easier or not depending on severity of the circumstance and on the person whom I was forgiving or not. I believe it is easier to forgive an enemy than a person you love because a loved one are not supposed to hurt you in any way. I realized that those who I care more cause the most pain.
When I was a child, every time I saw my mother crying and hurting from all the abuse induced by her husband, the person who was supposed to protect her, I ask God, why? I never received an answer. As the abuse continued and life went on, I was never able to forgive him for thesuffering that he caused not only to my mother, but to me as well. I was carrying all the miseries from my childhood and taking out on the people who love and care for me. There was no closure for the pain and suffering. The only person that I saw comfort and security from was my father, a man who never allowed me to pity myself or blame myself for other's actions. He was always there for me until my eighteenth birthday when he decided that I was "old enough to be on my own;" it was his own way to attempt making me independent. Everything became blurry at that point in my life. There was nowhere to turn except the only person who had the opportunities in her eighty years to master the meaning of true forgiveness: my grandmother, Consuelo, which her name literally means to console. Living with her and listening to her life stories allowed me to comprehend

Goodness, as defined by Webster's Dictionary, is "The quality of being good in any of its various senses; excellence; virtue; kindness; benevolence". This means that if you are good, or make good choices you can achieve excellence, virtue, kindness, and benevolence. If everyone had goodness, then we would have a world of no crime, no bullies, and no gangs. This is reason why people should make good decisions in their life. When people make good choices, they have a good feeling inside. When one sees someone drop their wallet, and he or she picks it up and returns it to them, they are grateful, which makes people happy or glad that they made that choice. When one decides to keep that wallet, he or she has just robbed a man (Which is against

Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process. Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in the article Defining Family: Young Adults' Perceptions of the Parent–Child Bond by Mellisa Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on many different forms. Today, in a world of the "postmodern family" the traditional lines of family structure are blurred. Children may come from diverse types of homes, or a couple, married or not may choose to have no children and consider...show more content...
Living with extended family members has also been publicized lately in relation to the poor economy. Young adults who typically lived on their own after college are moving back in with their parents, older adults on fixed incomes that do not go as far as they once did are living with their children. This is a definite shift in the traditional family. Having graduated and moved out on my own prior to the economic decline I have learned to live with less, but having known that was coming I would have considered living at home longer. My siblings have or are planning on moving back in with our parents after college graduation to get ahead money–wise. This is a stressor on not only the individuals as a lack of feelings of freedom, but also an adaptation by the family as a whole that was unplanned years ago. It is my belief that recognizing any family structure or definition is important, as the traditional version may be skewed in so many ways, without knowing or recognizing the "family" that people we run across may come from. We can also learn from other family definitions to build upon our own themes, rules, and beliefs. Adding stigma and prejudice toward families different from our own not only alienate the members, but can add unnecessary stress upon that family system. Stress in any family system can be seen as either an adaptation potential or a negative force. Many effects on the

What is religion? Each person's definition of religion is different. Each person's faith is different. This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be said the Primal religions were in fact not religions. Some may argue Confucianism is not areligion. Others may say Taoism is not a...show more content...
They are teachings learned by previous generations then passed down, they are not always actions. The fifth feature of religion is grace. Grace is defined by Smith as "the belief and assurance that reality is on our side and can be counted on." Lastly there is mystery. For this there is no exact definition, but it is all of what a religion cannot explain, it is all that the human mind cannot grasp, it is the certain "higher power" that religion offers. Of these six features, there are three that are present in most all religions, they are: authority, tradition, and mystery. Authority, tradition, and mystery further explore and define religion when looking specifically at Primal Religions, Confucianism, and Taoism. Primal Religions are often mistaken to be the religion of the primitive man, often thought to be unintelligent. There is a definition of "primal" that is better suited than unintelligent or primitive. Primal in terms of religion, refers to the lack of exposure to technology, it is not "knowing" the state of consciousness given to many by the technological environment. Primal religions preceded organized religion as we know it today by thousands of years, in some cases millions, but are still present in the world today; we now call them tribal religions. Within primal religions there are people who are knowledgeable about life, who are knowledgeable about Defining Religion–4 traditions, and who are Get more content

The constitution of the United States of America gives me the right to freedom because I am a United States citizen. I consider "freedom" to be my right to express myself in any way I choose. Freedom is defined as "having liberty of action or thought, independent". "Self–governed or not controlled by an outside party" is another definition of freedom. Freedom has a different meaning to each individual thus making it hard to find a clear concise definition.
When referring to freedom these words are often associated with freedom: Liberty, independence, sovereignty, autonomy, privilege, immunity, and indulgence. Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and justice. Independence is...show more content...
The government can however reprimand a person for misuse of their right to freedom of speech. Freedom of expression is also grated by the constitution by there are laws prohibiting indecent exposure. This law places limits on the freedom of expression. The government has decided that people are allowed to express themselves however they see fit with in the guideline the laws have set for the citizens. If I person chooses to express themselves outside the set boundaries they will have to pay the consequences.
If I had to determine a formula to determine freedom I would begin with a persons right to have many choices. In the United States a person has many choices. In everyday life people choose to go to school, to eat breakfast, and to get married. People also make bad choices like to shoplift, to drive a plane into the World Trade Center, or to drown their children. When people make decisions they have to take liability or responsibility for their actions or choices. If a mother decides to drown her children then she has to take responsibility for her actions. I made the choice to go to college. I now have to take the responsibility of going to class, doing my assignments and paying my tuition. Along with taking responsibility for my choice to attend college I have to deal with the consequences that come along with my choice. My consequences could be good in that I'm getting an education and preparing myself for the workforce someday. The mother who Get

"Genre," in the most generic definition, takes the meaning "kind; sort; style" (OED). Prior to the term's inception, the notion of genre in the study of media emerged in The Poetics, with Aristotle's discussion of the mode or manner of imitation in poetry. Of this Aristotle writes, "the medium being the same, and the objects [of imitation] the same, the poet may imitate by narration – in which case he can either take another personality as Homer does, or speak in his own person, unchanged – or he may present all his characters as living and moving before us" (Aristotle, 53). Here lies the distinction between epic, lyric, and drama, a distinction based solely in convention, the usage of the medium,...show more content...
It is a French word imported directly into the English language, derived from the Latin "genus" (the stem is gener–), itself derived from the Greek "genos" (OED). Having evolved separately, the Greek word and the Greek idea converged. The Greek root–word, like its Latin relative, refers to a clan or race of people, or to offspring (Liddell & Scott Lexicon). This sense of familial interconnectedness is essential to genre theory. Frye writes:
It is clear that criticism cannot be a systematic study unless there is a quality in literature which enables it to be so. We have to adopt the hypothesis, then, that just as there is an order of nature behind the natural sciences, so literature is not a piled aggregate of "works," but an order of words (Frye, 17).
In conceiving of literature as a unified "order of words," Frye requires a system of genres which will encompass the entire medium, expressing each the entire state of literature at a given moment, all its bloodlines.
One might extend this idea of kinship to objects within any given medium, as in literature each novel bears a relation to other novels, or across several media, as a Western film may bear relation to a similar comic–book or radio drama. From this first approach, it makes more sense to think about genres in a medium or the genres of a medium, than to think of genre as a medium. Based on the questions raised in Aristotle's discussion, one might assemble a definition of genre more

In the late 1970's and early '80's and new type of writing style came about that relied on many of the traditional criteria to be called science fiction, but had a certain something else that had many people agreeing that it was not just science fiction. This new style of writing was so different and so many people started writing in this style that the general public decided that it was time this genre of writing deserved a label: cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is not an easy group of writing to define on paper, but it is easy to spot when one is reading it. The cyberpunk writing movement started out with many short stories then became recognizable to the masses with probably the movements most successful novel,...show more content...
This is not to say that cyberpunks do not have there fair share of far flung imaginative human interface hookups and so forth, but they are talking about technology that if it were to be developed, it would be within the writers life time or so. The other difference in the technology that is described in cyberpunk is how it is used. Almost every person in the stories has access to the technology. More importantly, the technology involved normally allows for extreme human inter–action with it. The writer will make computers and humans connect, and allow the computer to alter the mind, human social behaviors, and/or society itself. Cyberpunk futures make computers not only become a part of everyday life, but a integral element for survival and prosperity. This aspect is the main plot in Gibson's novel. His main character, Chase, needs to find a way to reverse the damage in a chip in his head for him to do the type of work he wanted to do. Before cyberpunk, humans had control over thier technology, and it was a separate entity, but now the distinction over how much a person is human and how much of them are machine is not so clear. Now humans have lost the ability to control thier technology.
Another important feature of cyberpunk is the integration of everyday events and items that affect people the most. In Neuromancer, Gibson allows chase to go in to a bar and have a beer. This may not be an overly exciting event, one that many people do every day, but the

The Meaning of Life
My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so....show more content...
Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or her role."
At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62, 'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be, laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored.
Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in

Defining play can be very difficult. The term play can be used to illustrate a wide range of behaviors and activities, and can be perceived as both essential and insignificant to the child at the same time. Santrock (2012, p.437) suggests a definition of play as "a pleasurable activity that is engaged in for its own sake." However, this is argued by Kernan (2007, p.5) who states that none of the potential definitions are broad enough to encompass all of the meanings associated with play. Despite the lack of such universal definition, Rennie (2003, p.22) claims, that "we can recognize play across barriers of language, of culture, even of species", which conveys its importance in the life and development of children, as it is...show more content...

It encourages children to develop the ability to control their actions and emotions and adjust them to the recognized social norm and in addition to that, play helps children to prepare themselves to become an active member of a culture and their own family by interacting with the people closest to them, such as parents and other family members (Vygotsky, as cited in Brennan, 2012, p.162.) As a result of this, their social and emotional development is advanced from an early stage. Santrock (2012) also outlines the benefit of play for the child's physical development, as it "permits the child to work off excess physical energy and to release pent–up tensions" (Santrock, 2012, p.438), resulting in improved physical and mental health. Garvey (1991, p.27) states that play involving physical activity occurs more frequently in healthy children, possibly confirming that it is a component of healthy development. In addition to this, encouraging physical activity through play could influence the children to maintain a healthy lifestyle later in life, and has an array of physical and mental health benefits which prevent disease associated with lack of activity (Chaloux and Media, 2013.)

Who am I? There are many of us walking around trying to figure out who we are and what we stand for. Self–reflection can be conveyed in many different ways, using many different adjectives to describe the person we are. There are some who will give an honest description of one's self and then there is some who become delusional with the perception they want others to see. Most people on social sites create a profile which can be so far from whom they really are, it is usually a perception of who they want to be. Some say it's being able to make your own decisions or having justice. But what does freedom mean to me? When you are free, you have a sense of being free. Feeling free to me means having the ability to be able to express yourself and your beliefs without being judged by others. With freedom, there is equality, happiness, and respect of yourself and others. But freedom is more than being just free. Freedom comes with desire too.
