Global Warming: Myth or Fact? The Global Warming theory has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Citizens of the world are being encouraged to be more environmentally conscious by others including politicians, celebrities, and world organizations. The problem with the theory lies in the fact that it has become more and more controversial as it gains publicity and attention. The basic concept behind this theory is that the earth was made with a balance of "greenhouse gasses". These gasses are naturally occurring within the atmosphere and they essentially make the planet habitable by keeping it warm. When the world became more industrialized, the amount of carbon dioxide that was being emitted into the atmosphere...show more content...

The more people habituating the planet, the more potential there is for emission of greenhouse gasses. In short, the basis of this argument other than years of documented research and scientific discovery is what harm could we do by being more conservative in our use of energy and other entities that produce more than their share of greenhouse gasses? The answer as it stands now is none. The harmful effects of ignoring this crisis are all but proven fact. The problem that the pro– global warming theorists have created is that of social standing and little else. While there may be scientific backing to support some of the theory, the media presents the problem with great sensationalism. Global warming and energy conservation has thus become a trend and losses some of its validity through this. The scare tactics used by the media to "promote awareness" are just that, a linguistic ploy to gain favor. "Awareness of this global threat reinforced public concern and environmental problems and thereby provided environmental activists, scientists, and policy makers with new momentum in their efforts to promote environmental protection." (McCright, 2000) This statement draws line to the potential benefits that would be received if the pro–global warming theorists were to draw enough attention to the issue. Driven by social empowerment and conviction to environmental protection, these activists misrepresent the actual threat and paint it as being much more

Global Warming Argumentative Essay

Global Warming is due to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring process that aids in heating the Earth's surface and atmosphere. It results from the fact that certain atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane, are able to change the energy balance of the planet by being able to absorb longwave radiation from the Earth's surface. Without the greenhouse effect, life on this planet would probably not exist as the average temperature of the Earth would be a chilly –18 degrees Celsius, rather than the present 15 degrees Celsius.

As energy from the sun passes through the atmosphere a number of things take place. A portion of the energy (26 %...show more content... The now warmer atmospheric greenhouse gas molecules begin radiating longwave energy in all directions. Over 90 % of this emission of longwave energy is directed back to the Earth's surface where it once again is absorbed by the surface. The heating of the ground by the longwave radiation causes the ground surface to once again radiate repeating the cycle described above, again and again, until no more longwave is available for absorption.

The amount of heat energy added to the atmosphere by the greenhouse effect is controlled by the concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. All of the major greenhouse gases have increased in concentration since the beginning of the industrial revolution (about 1700 A.D.). As a result of these higher concentrations, scientists predict that the greenhouse effect will be enhanced and the Earth's climate will become warmer. Predicting the amount of warming is accomplished by computer modeling. Computer models suggest that a doubling of the concentration of the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, may raise the average global temperature between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius. However, the numeric equations of computer models do not accurately simulate the effects of a number of possible negative feedbacks. For example, many of the models cannot properly simulated the negative effects that increased cloud cover would have on

Global Warming:

"It's gettin' hot in here, so take off all your clothes..." The famous words of R&B star, Nelly, are truer than one might think. It really is getting hot in here. The world's average temperature is rising every year and is expected to be 5 to 10 degrees higher by the end of the century, which is faster than they have increased in the last ten millennia, according to the National Resource Defense Council's website. But why is this epidemic happening? As the Defense Council states, global warming is caused by carbon dioxide and other types of heat trapping pollution that are collecting like a blanket in the atmosphere, trapping heat from the earth as it tries to radiate back into space. As a result, the planet...show more content...

This trend will even be noticeable the next few decades. It is essential to following generation's comfort that this trend stops now because, according to author Kathryn Schulz, Chicago will start to feel a lot like southern Missouri in this lifetime. For instance, the Qori Kalis glacier in Peru is shrinking at a rate of 200 meters per year, 40 times faster that in 1978. Ice is disappearing from the Arctic Ocean and Greenland, spring is starting sooner in 200 other countries, and animals are moving to cooler areas (Carey & Shapiro, 2004). Ecologist Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution states, "...Even the most modest warming today is having large effects on ecosystems. The most compelling impact is the 10% decreasing yield of corn in the Midwest per degree of warming," (Carey and Shapiro, 2004). Moreover, robins, traditional indications of spring, have been showing up earlier and earlier at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado. The bird's change in arrival time relates with increasingly warm spring temperatures in the area. In addition, many of the woody plants of Boston's Arnold Arboretum are blooming earlier every few years. In a study conducted at the Arboretum, from 1980–2002 plants flowered eight days earlier than they did from 1900 to 1920. "What the study is showing is that plants are very responsive to global warming," says biologist Richard Primack. "And the global warming we are

Research Proposal The Climate changing, this has been a well–known issue. Air Pollution is killing the environment, creating damage that cannot be reversed. Our social media will attempt to tell you different and make it out to be not as bad or serious as it really is. My research proposal will explain what the effects we have on our beautiful little planet in a global scale, and I will point out how the internet can try and argue the facts to make global warming a hoax. I will layout the facts and statistics about the subject matter, then explain why their argumentation is false. A good quote for the article to start it off is one from Hawkins, "How did global warming discussions end up hinging on what's happening with polar bears, unverifiable predictions of what will happen in a hundred years and whether people are 'climate deniers' or 'global warming cultists?' wouldn't this be considered a scientific topic? We should be spending more time discussing the science involved?" (Hawkins). I believe that nature in part along with humans are causing damage to the environment. Our planet is moving closer to the sun; we know that but that alone would not be the cause of the planets warming as fast as it is. I also believe that social media is not telling it how it really is by not using the facts and evidence. I will then bring forth the prevalence of the ice age and talk about facts disproving global warming (which is the theory that the world is slowly rising in temperature

Research Proposal On Global Warming

Global Warming

Global warming is an increase in the earth's temperature due to fossil fuels, industry, and agricultural processes caused by human, natural, and other gas emissions. (Melissa Phillips). This results in an increased emission of greenhouse gases. (Caroline Quatman). Short–wave solar radiation sinks into the Earth's atmosphere and warms its surface; while longwave infrared radiation emitted by earth's surface is absorbed, and then re–emitted by trace gases. (Brent C. Willhoite)

Climate changes occur in our earth's atmosphere due to a buildup of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases can occur naturally as well as a result of human activities. (Melissa Phillips). Problems can occur when higher concentrations of greenhouse...show more content... These gases trap heat and cause the greenhouse effect, rising global temperatures.(Heidi Sterrett).

Human activities add to the levels of these gasses, causing more problems. The burning of solid waste, fossil fuels, and wood products are major causes. Automobiles, heat from homes and businesses, and factories are responsible for about 80% of today's carbon dioxide emissions, 25% of methane, and 20% of the nitrous oxide emissions. The increase in agriculture, deforestation, landfills, industrial production, and mining contribute a significant share of emissions too The gases released into the atmosphere are tracked by emission inventories. An emission inventory counts the amount of air pollutants discharged into the atmosphere. These emission inventories are used by many organizations. NASA and meteorologists also use them.(Heidi Sterrett).

The Centers for Disease Control have been involved in studying global warming's effect on human health. Global warming is a danger to a human's health. Its affect on climate can adversely affect humans. Plagues have been attributed to global warming. An increase in temperature can result in a longer life cycle for diseases or the agents spreading them. Living in a warm area makes egg production a quicker process. Global warming will lead to more precipitation, which enables infectious diseases to be more easily contracted and spread.

In 1987, the average global surface temperature was 0.33 degrees Celsius. In 2016, the average global surface temperature was 0.99 degrees Celsius. NASA states that "sixteen of the seventeen warmest years in the 136–year record all have occurred since 2001, with the exception of 1998." NASA also states that 2016 is the warmest year on record.Global warming is becoming a bigger issue as time progresses. Global warming has to potential to cause devastating effects on Earth. Many people, though, don't believe in global warming. As defined by dictionary.com, global warming is "a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the Earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants." Global warming is caused by expansion of the "greenhouse effect."

NASA states the greenhouse effect is "warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space." Some gasses that cause the greenhouse effect include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The main gas contributing to the greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide. The Union of Concerned Scientists writes, "We are overloading our atmosphere with carbon dioxide, which traps heat and steadily drives up the planet's temperature." Humans are the main cause of this increase in carbon dioxide. The main source of the excess carbon is from humans burning fossil fuels. The Get

Our planet's atmosphere traps energy just like a greenhouse. Energy from the Sun can enter the Earth's atmosphere, but not all of it can easily find its way out again.

What blocks the Sun's energy from escaping from the Earth? Unlike a greenhouse, the Earth does not have a layer of glass over it! Instead, molecules in our atmosphere called greenhouse gasses absorb the heat. Greenhouse gasses include water vapor, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide. There may not be much of some of these gasses in our atmosphere, but they can have a big impact. Each greenhouse gas molecule is made of three or more atoms that are bonded loosely together. These molecules are able to...show more content... About 30 gases produced by human activity have been identified as contributing to the greenhouse effect. These are sometimes called greenhouse gases. The main ones are carbon dioxide, methane, CFCs and nitrous oxide. Sunlight reaches the Earth's surface, is reflected off it, and is prevented from escaping from the atmosphere by this layer of gases, which acts like glass in a greenhouse.

Up to a point, the greenhouse effect is a natural process, and naturally occuring carbon dioxide is not dangerous. Without greenhouse gases, the average temperature of the Earth would be –19C , in other words, too cold for us to live. However, the concentration of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has changed dramatically: since the 18th century, carbon dioxide has increased by 30%.

There is disagreement among scientists about the seriousness of global warming. Most scientists agree that the global temperature is rising. They do not agree on more specific elements of the issue: How much will it warm up? What will happen if it does warm up? How far are humans responsible? What should we do to stop it?

Scientists believe that if we go on producing gases at the rate we do now, it is likely that the Earth's average temperature will rise by about 0.3 degrees C every ten years. This

In today's society it seems humanity is always being blamed for the tragedies that seem to go along with this catastrophe. However, research has proven that humans are not the sole cause of global warming. In fact, some scientists say that the natural causes of global warming far outweigh the human causes. What exactly does global warming effect? The effects of global warming are spread across the entire world and can be broken down into three main areas, the first of which is heat waves. Heat waves are defined as periods of time lasting more than three days at which the average temperature exceeds 90 degrees...show more content...

(47–48) This warming of the arctic also affects humans around the world not just the indigenous people and animals. David Rind says "these increases in temperature around the arctic will most certainly impact our weather here in the United States if we do not have those seemingly unneeded outbreaks of arctic cold then we will not receive as much winter precipitation which will make it hard for states like Kansas to produce their winter goods". (qtd in Johansen 286)

The final area that scientists break down the effects of global warming is wild storms. Global warming is said to increase the amount of rain produced during thunderstorms which may in turn cause floods. According to Robert Britt "as the climate warms up more water will fall in the form of rain rather than snow which will cause the reservoirs to fill faster, this in turn will result in the water runoff all into spring rather than being able to bring it out throughout the summer". In addition to heavier rainfall, hurricanes and tropical storms are greatly affected by small increases in the global temperature of the oceans. For example according to Dr. Kerry Emanuel "a 0.5 degree Celsius increase in the oceans temperature can cause the power of hurricanes in that year to at least double". With such extreme effects of global warming why is the human

The plants not only absorb gases ones throughout the atmosphere, but the ones created by humans too, such as fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are the gases released when making plastics and when producing other types of fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. When these gases are released they clog up the atmosphere, which means other types of gases can not escape. This is also another leading factor of the world heating up and also leads to be a cause of the major flooding, all of which is an effect of global warming. The second most leading cause of global warming is aerosols. "Aerosols are air born solid particles or liquid droplets" usually found in hair spray cans or other types of continuous spray cans (Wikipedia). In these types of hair sprays there are fossil fuels combusted to help release the sprays needed. These aerosols are not only in spray cans but also volcanoes. In lava, that explodes out of volcanoes, sulfur is released. The sulfur then rises to the atmosphere, which destroys it (Volcano Hazard Program). Not only does sulfur rise, but also is absorbed by the ground which causes a natural. This is another leading cause of the temperature rise going on now, and is a cause of global warming (warming of the atmosphere). It has many effects such as air pollution that can cause many problems for people. These gases can be poisonous, and deadly if often breathed in. The 19th as well as the 20th century have been the most prolific time periods in modern history as concerns science, technology and socio–economic development. Within these two centuries we witnessed the discovery of electricity, the invention of the engine which played a very important role in the maturity of the well–known industrial revolution. Through this revolution people began to live in a more decent and comfortable manner; new commodities were produced and entire new kinds of industry were developed. Although all these inventions, discoveries and scientific breakthroughs improved in an outstanding way our well–being, they also provided us with some troubles that scientists had never foreseen or even imagined....show more content...

Increased rainfall may cause more frequent flooding and as a consequence the sea level may rise. Scientists announce that an estimated 50 cm rise by the year 2100 could submerge more than 5,000 square miles of dry land and an additional 4,000 square miles of wetlands in the U.S.

Another huge problem that can be caused by the global warming is an increase in mortality due to health issues. Changing patterns of precipitation and temperature may produce new breeding sites for pests and viruses, shifting the range of infectious diseases. In such way we may probably experience new epidemic strikes of diseases present 100 years ago.

Obviously, climate has a big influence on plants and animals in the natural environment, on oceans, and on human activities, such as agriculture, water supplies, and heating and cooling. The effects of climate change depend upon how much change there is, how fast it occurs, and how easily the world can adapt to the new conditions.

The effects of climate change on people would vary a lot from place–to–place. Economically developed societies, like those in North America, Europe and Japan, could use technology to reduce direct impacts. For example, they might develop new crop varieties, construct new water systems, and limit coastal development. Some northern countries, such as Canada and Russia, might even benefit from longer grow seasons

Lastly many bodies of water become polluted thanks to all the gasses in the atmosphere that mix with the clouds and fall as acid rain polluting rivers, and lakes and killing many animals. All of theses factors change our daily life and can ruin whole species, and all of this is because of temperature changes.

Many scientific methods of controlling or lowering the Earth's temperature are being researched; these can also be called geoengineering. Geoengineering is a method in which scientists can change the levels of greenhouse gases directly or indirectly. Also there could be methods that prevent greenhouse gasses to be emitted. There have never been any geoengineering solutions done on a global scale since it has to be almost proof less. But there have been some ideas that are being use on a small scale like the iron fertilization; this is a process in which iron is injected into the oceans to speed up the reproduction of plankton which breath carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, this is one solution that seems to have the least side effects thanks to the reason I just presented and also due to that plankton are the base of many marine animals food chain. So this method is being widely researched to see if it can be done on a global scale. Not only is lowering the levels of gases in the air important, but also lowering the level of gases we emit, and there have been many scientific breakthroughs like solar energy or cars that run Get

Global Warming, aside from pollution is one of scientists biggest concerns. Global Warming is caused by the Greenhouse effect. There are 4 steps in the Greenhouse effect process. The first is, sunlight radiates from the sun, through space, to the Earth's atmosphere. The second is, sunlight enters the atmosphere and hits the Earth. Some of that sunlight turns into heat energy in the form of infrared light. Surrounding air and land, which in turn makes the heat warm, absorbs the heat. Third, the greenhouse gases trap infrared rays that is remitted into the atmosphere. Finally, the gas then absorbs the light and is remitted back to the Earth's surface and warms it even more. Another event that would occur from global warming is the drastic rise in sea level. As the Earth warms up, the polar ice caps will start to melt. This would put immense amounts of water into the Earth's oceans. All cities along all the coasts would be flooded from the rise in sea level. This would cause people to move inland, and with more people inland, it would cause a shortage of space in some areas. With the coastal cities under water, this would cause a great economic strain on the rest of the cities throughout the world. Global Warming would also cause extreme weather.

Today, action is occurring at every level to reduce, to avoid, and to better understand the risks that are associated with global warming. On a national level, the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) coordinates the world's most extensive research effort on global warming. In addition, the Clinton Administration is actively helping to address the challenge of global warming while, at the same time, strengthening the economy.

On a global level, countries around the world have expressed a firm commitment to strengthening international responses to the risks of climate change. The U.S. is working to strengthen international action and broaden the participation from people around the world.

Scientists report that global warming has been escalating since the Industrial Revolution. Governments are trying to reduce carbon–dioxide emissions. With the speed of destruction of Earth?fs ecosystem, the survival of many species, including human beings, is threatened. In order to solve this danger, we have to reduce the consumption of energy and use the alternative energy resources. If we calculate the present energy price, alternative energy must be more expensive than fossil fuels. However if we consider the negative price which is caused by global warming, this result might be different. Now I would like to propose some solutions: (1) reduce the use of fossil fuels; (2) find alternative energy...show more content...

(2) Find alternative energy resources

I cannot recommend nuclear power as an alternative energy resource because many people have experienced accidents and atomic bombs. However, there are other alternatives such as wind power, tidal power, andsolar power. Many people believe that these are expensive. Why not calculate the cost of global warming into the expense of using fossil fuels? Which is cheaper? In some industrialized countries, those experimental power sources have succeeded as profitable solutions. If we impose taxes on fossil fuels that will match the expenses we are going to pay to restore our planet, people will be eager to change their use of fossil fuels to new alternative energy resources.

(3) Recycle usable resources

In many industrialized nations, they do not collect bottles, cans and newspapers for the purpose of recycling. However this is done in many cities in the U.S. Why not do the same thing in other industrialized nations? In some states of the U.S., people pay five–cent deposit when they buy beer and other beverages. In order to get the money back, people collect cans and bottles. Human beings are egoistic: we have to give ourselves some kind of monetary incentive. And it works.

It is important that governments and people solve the Global Warming problem by decreasing buildings and greenhouses emissions, cutting down industrial waste heat, and encouraging people to use biofuel in their vehicles. Researchers have found the three main sources of Global Warming: human activities (that is caused by their daily activities and its impacts on people's lives) and natural factors (which are caused by the chemical and physical impacts of natural sources) (Roleff 57– 61). To be precise, there are two kinds of human sources such as heat and gases emissions that are produced from buildings and greenhouses and heat losses that come from power plants and factories. "The idea that conflict between competing interests is the basic, animating force of social change and society in general. (Conley 2015) Conflict theorists look at the inequality perspective of societal problems and they can be from poverty, race, or gender etc. An important area of focus among environmental sociologists is the relationship between inequality and the environment. In the article, All About Environmental Sociology, Dr. Cole talks about how environmental sociologists use conflict theory with inequalities in society like income, race, gender and how climate change negatively affects these people. Low–income people for instance have more of a chance to live in a worse area that may be subject to more environmental hazards. (Cole 2017) "Numerous studies have documented that income, racial, and gender inequality make the populations that experience them more likely to experience negative environmental outcomes like pollution, proximity to waste, and lack of access to natural resources." Carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide are the most common greenhouse gasses. Every time the temperature keeps rising, the more carbon dioxide will be released. When this process gets going, it is very hard to keep in control. Methane is another greenhouse gas. Methane is a greenhouse gas whose molecules absorb heat trying to escape to space. Natural sources include wetlands, swamps and marshes, termites, and oceans. (Methane) Methane gases are released into the atmosphere. Atmospheric methane has doubled since the Industrial Revolution and has "contributed 20 percent to the enhancement of the greenhouse effect, second only to carbon dioxide". (Methane) A major effect of global warming is there will be higher temperatures and it will affect how the water cycle works. Places on the earth will receive more rain than others. There will be a great amount of evaporation going on from the rivers, lakes and oceans due to a increase in the temperature. This could be a good thing for some people needing rain and a bad thing for other people who get to much rain. While the temperature is on the rise there will be greater amount of rains all over. In return with all of the rains this could help farmers. It would extend the growing season for crops. This would greatly help out the farmers because they would be making more money. While this is the positive side of the rain, this could also hurt the farmers. There are some crops that out there that will die with to much rain. There

Rising carbon dioxide levels can be attributed to a combination of burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and petroleum as well as deforestation in general ( Source A). According to an article focused on environmental awareness, "the world's average surface temperature rose by approximately 1 degree Fahrenheit, the fastest rate in any period over the last 1000 years" (Source A). Damage has already been done to the environment but it is not the time to throw our hands up, it is the time for leaders in all sectors to tackle this issue head on. We know that carbon dioxide is the culprit, so now it is imperative to implement the solution and take a hard look at who is producing the most greenhouse gases. Big changes need to take place but they can only be done in steps and not all at once to be effective. In an excerpt from a book about global warming, Mark Maslin brings up the point that many feel the Kyoto Protocol does not go far enough; scientists believe that a 60% cut of greenhouse gas emissions is necessary in order to "prevent major climate change" (Source E). A sixty percent cut of emissions should be what countries work up to achieving but first and foremost, every country needs to agree to the Kyoto Protocol guidelines. The Kyoto Protocol itself should not be viewed as the end in the discussion of greenhouse gas restrictions, but rather the first stepping stone to a much broader and effective

Synthesis Essay On Global Warming

Reflection Paper On Global Warming

In the first day of English 101 Climate Change and Multimedia class, Professor Sheila Tefft assigned the class to write a self–reflection about our perspective on writing. I wrote that I use recursive strategy, which is writing in the order of a thesis statement, topic sentences, evidence, analysis, and conclusion. Knowing this approach, I thought I would be successful. However, I encountered more challenges in this class than a success. I encountered a challenge in the first major assignment, which was writing a research paper after reading Mark Lynas' Six Degrees. In this research paper, we had to address our opinion on one environmental issue, and I asked myself whether vertical farming could be a potential solution to stopping deforestation in Brazil. The objective of this writing, according to the syllabus, was to learn how to "summarize, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the ideas of others as we [you] undertake a scholarly inquiry to produce our [your] own arguments." I exactly followed this step. I first did a general research on vertical farming and deforestation in Brazil, analyzed the information, synthesized the main argument, and delivered my thought to my audience, who are general public and proponents believing vertical farming is the future of agriculture. Global Warming

One of the hottest topics being discussed now a days is the effects of global warming on the environment and the efforts being made in order to combat the potential effects. Simply put, global warming refers to the environmental effects caused by the constant emission of carbon dioxide from carbon based fuels. These effects are supposedly widespread; the temperature of the earth will rise, the land becomes less conducive to, vegetation, and various ecosystems become extinct. While running for office, both President Clinton and Vice President Gore promised to' institute a timetable by which carbon dioxide levels in the year 2000 will not exceed 1990 levels. However, the President backed out because he feared the backlash of his opponents who would accuse him of trying to cut the usage of carbon based fuels by adding to the already proposed gasoline tax.

And on a global level, there is also disagreement among world leaders. A recent pact called the Climate Change Convention did not manage to
