In GIA’s history, very few polished diamonds of gem quality have surpassed the 100-carat mark. Already part of an elite group due to its size, the highly transparent nature of this diamond adds to its rarity. This pure diamond is classified as type IIa which scientifically means it is lacking measurable levels of impurities like nitrogen, thus giving this diamond its pure white color.

This diamond was fashioned into a classic old world cushion cut, with its smaller table and open culet. Its faceting bears resemblance to other world-renowned diamonds, such as the 45.52 carat Blue Hope Diamond and the 105 carat Koh-I-Nur.

FROM THE EDITOR

If you have any doubt that season is stretching into summer, welcome to June. For a month when things are supposed to be “slowing down,” there’s quite a lot going on—and many reasons to celebrate. One of my favorite observations in June is Pride Month, when we spotlight the accomplishments and contributions of the LGBTQ community. I loved the idea of showing support in our pages, so a few months ago, at the amfAR gala, I approached event wiz Jeff Fowler with a thought: Why not put together a team of partners to assemble creative scenes in celebration of LGBTQ culture? Jeff was immediately onboard and, several brainstorming sessions later, we hatched a plan to create rainbow vignettes inspired by cult gay films. The result is a riot of color that practically jumps off the pages. Turn to page 60 for our fun-loving salute to Pride. June 19 is Father’s Day, and to mark the occasion we’ve asked four local dads to talk to us about raising their young sons today. Parenting has never been easy, but in the era of the metaverse and digital everything, it’s especially challenging. These fathers share their hopes and dreams for their children, as well as some wisdom—and humor—about fatherhood. Turn to “Father Figures” on page 52 to read more and see Nick Mele’s adorable father-son portraits—including a self-portrait with his two boys. And if you’re going to be out on the water this month, don’t miss “The Cool Cats,” our resident yacht expert’s top 10 power catamarans for fun in the sun. If you’re into foredecks built for entertaining (hot tub included!) and top speeds of 34 knots, Howard Walker has got you covered. Turn to page 66 for the full story. Enjoy the issue—and all your summer adventures!

heavy, and the crown will slip down your head. Stay away from roses, sunflowers, peonies, and dahlias.” Flower crowns are especially popular for birthdays, showers, festivals, and weddings. As cut flowers with no water source, they’ll only last a few days, but you can keep your crown forever if you hang it to dry in a cool spot. “The colors and dimensions of the flowers will obviously change, but it’s a beautiful keepsake,” Hodson adds. (bohogardencrowns.com)

TARA KOENKE PHOTOGRAPHY

After finding inspiration in the wildflowers of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Palm Beach Gardens resident Nikki Hodson began creating floral crowns as a hobby. Her passion soon blossomed into a business, replacing her job as a visual director for Anthropologie. Today, Hodson and her team at Boho Garden Crowns & Events are a full-service boutique florist offering arrangements for every day and special occasions, as well as wedding and event design and installations. Still, Hodson’s boho-chic flower crowns are a popular request—and she’s eager to share the love, offering crown-crafting workshops upon request and often hosting pop-ups in season. Feeling free-spirited? All you need is scissors, wire, and a wildflower-picking spot. “I love to use chamomile, spray roses, ranunculus, tweedia, anemone, and wax flowers— the smaller the flower, the better,” Hodson says. “Larger flowers are too

FORE A GOOD CAUSE On June 7, join with golfers around the world in marking Women’s Golf Day, an annual global event founded in 2016 by West Palm Beach resident Elisa Gaudet. Held on the first Tuesday in June, Women’s Golf Day is a four-hour sporting celebration that spans 24 hours, beginning in New Zealand and ending in Hawaii. During the first two hours, new golfers can receive lessons while practiced golfers enjoy two hours of ninehole play; the remaining two hours are a chance for both groups to mingle. The event has been hosted at 1,000 locations across 80 countries and aims to support women and girls in a historically male-dominated sport. Once a model and actress, Gaudet’s golfindustry experience ranges from spearheading marketing for the Tour de las Americas (Latin PGA Tour), to founding a golf marketing firm, to writing a syndicated monthly golf column. “After reading a number of research studies saying that women were quick to try golf but equally 24

l

Meet two women charting their own COURSE in the world of golf

quick to leave, I created an event that speaks to women’s needs and wants: short format, non-intimidating, and for beginners and existing golfers,” says Gaudet. “Women’s Golf Day is able to get women started in golf and give them a community to engage with, for our events and beyond. I am passionate about connecting and empowering women—golf is just the vehicle.” According to the National Golf Foundation, the number of women golfers in the United States jumped by 450,000 in 2020, and women now make up a quarter of all golfers. Women’s Golf Day participants are encouraged to wear red and white, and cost varies by location. The Palm Beach Par-3 Golf Course, Wellington National Golf Club, and local TopGolf facilities and PGA Tour Superstores usually participate, but visit the event’s website for the full list of golf courses, retail locations, and driving ranges. Going, Going, GOLF Golf Girl Locals love few things more than a hometown success and a good round of golf. An up-andcoming golfer to call our own? All the better. The future looks bright for 16-year-old Gabriella Albert, who was named the 2021 South Florida PGA Jr. Tour player of the year. “Being on the golf course allows me to be in my element,” Albert shares. “The golf course has always been a place for me to express myself and my desire to win.” Albert credits much of her success to growing up as a member of Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach. “At the age of 5, I started playing weekly in the Sunday clinic at Mizner Country Club. Most of the members have watched my golf game improve over the years and have encouraged me since I was a little girl. I have always loved how much the members care about my success.” Looking at her path so far, it seems there’s more to come.

She thought her life was over. “I even wanted to go to prison because I was convinced I couldn’t succeed on probation,” she says. She realizes now that her struggle was a key part of her growth. “If I didn’t struggle even in recovery like every other young person does, I wouldn’t have that knowledge to help others,” she says. Today, Severino uses her own experiences to offer hope to people experiencing addiction and homelessness in West Palm Beach. “I know they feel like they can “We’re doing that hard work to make sure these amaztalk to me and not feel like I’m looking at them in a dif- ing people can get to a point where they are selfferent way, because I’m not. INSIDER LIVING WITH IVEY

Ethical EATING

How your daily food choices IMPACT the environment By Ivey Leidy Photography by Jerry Rabinowitz

A

lthough industrial agriculture has made production easier and food more widely available, it comes with an ethical and environmental impact. According to the Land Health Institute, the global meat industry uses a third of the world’s fresh water and produces more greenhouse gases than the entire world’s transportation emissions. Considering meat consumption has tripled since the 1960s, it’s likely that production and consumption will continue to rise. As this happens, industrial farm animals will become even more densely packed together and their treatment will worsen. They are already subjected to antibiotics to treat and prevent bacterial infections, growth hormones to expedite production, an unnatural diet of grains instead of grasses, genetic modification and mutilation, and a lifetime of confinement. Furthermore, it takes 1,700 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef. Conversely, it takes 39 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of vegetables. Researchers have hypothesized that if every American went meatless for just one day a week, we could save 100 billion gallons of water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide. Thankfully, there are many ways to eat more ethically. Start by buying local, which can reduce the need to transport goods across long distances, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and pollution. Local produce is also fresher and contains more nutrients than produce that has been sitting on truck beds for weeks. 30

Another key step is to waste less. Utilize fresh veggies that last the longest—such as cruciferous vegetables and root vegetables—and opt for frozen fruits and vegetables that tend to spoil quicker. And be sure to work edible food scraps, like broccoli stems, into your meals as well. Finally, choose better quality meat, poultry, and fish. Practices such as grass-fed, pasture-raised, and sustainably farmed are not only better for the planet, but better for your health too.

BEHIND THE LABELS • Grass-fed cows have less fat and higher levels of heart-healthy omega-3s and vitamins A and E. Grass-fed and -finished means the cows are fed nothing but grass after weaning. • Pasture-raised, certifiedhumane poultry produce healthier eggs with twice the omega-3s, three times the vitamin D, four times

the vitamin E, and seven times the beta carotene as conventional caged. • Certified-humane chickens are able to roam free, forage on their natural diet, and socialize. Free-range means that they have access to 2 square feet of space. • Wild seafood is caught in the animal’s natural environment, where they can

eat their natural diets. • Farmed seafood is typically raised in crowded pens where antibiotic use is high, artificial coloring may be added to already processed feed, and contaminants and pesticides are prevalent. • Sustainably farmed means the fish are less densely populated and there is less chance of antibiotic use.

Maine Attraction Andrea’s Gate cottage Hidden Pond’s organic farm

Tucked in the birch forest but close to the sea, Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport is New England’s premier summertime escape By Paul Rubio Maine is famed for its dramatic, windswept coastlines, yet some of its greatest treasures lie inland. Case in point: Hidden Pond, a 60-acre resort etched into the balsam fir– and birch-draped forests beyond downtown Kennebunkport, open seasonally from May through October. A total of 46 cottages, bungalows, and treetop lodges dot the woodsy environs, complemented by a whimsical tree spa (with treatment rooms 8 feet above the ground), lush gardens, and a farmto-table restaurant called Earth. Add to this activities rooted in wellness (think: guided forest therapy) and others reminiscent of summer camp (Ping-Pong or s’mores, anyone?), plus proximity to the sea, and prepare to revel in New England’s ultimate summer vacation. Hidden Pond first impresses with its campus-style layout and diversity in accommodations, each cozier than the next. From three collections—separated by architectural style and interior design inspiration—take your pick of 10 treetop lodges, 20 bungalows, and 16 cottages. Each of the family-forward cottages is a singular display of classic New England charm, bound by the common thread of rental amenities including fully equipped gourmet kitchens, grills, and washer-dryers. The elevated treetop lodges, on the other hand, are studies in cabin-in-the-woods chic, with dark woodwork and light soft goods harmonized by prolific spaces that bring the outdoors in (the screened-in porches with daybeds and outdoor rain showers are everything). Reinvented for the 2022 season, the romantic couples’ bungalows bear the stamp of Todd Snyder. A four-time CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year nominee, Snyder first worked with Hidden Pond in 2020, when he transformed one of the lodges in the vein of his “From Away” fall runway collection with L.L.Bean. Now he has thematically reimagined every bungalow under his discerning visions of seaside, mountainside, or countryside. Once you’ve settled into your luxe lair, embrace Hidden Pond’s enchanted forest and the amenities that flourish therein. Amble through nature or explore trails via a beach cruiser—every guest has access to one. Enjoy languid days at the

Magic BUZZ

VOLKSWAGEN’s upcoming ID Buzz people carrier captures the groovy vibe of the original By Howard Walker

P

ull out your favorite psychedelic tie-dye, baggiest boho harem pants, and round sunglasses à la John Lennon because the VW bus is back. And I tell you, daddy-o, it’s really far-out. Volkswagen has reinvented the iconic, beloved, hippy-dippy Microbus. It’s called the ID Buzz and it’s all-electric. My reaction in four words? What took so long? This is an aesthetic masterpiece—a lofty-roofed people mover that captures the born-to-be-wild look and spirit of the original. Even better: It brings the design up to date with some very cool technology. The ID Buzz is based on the same electric “skateboard” platform used in VW’s new ID.4 electric crossover. When it lands on U.S. shores, it should have a range of around 300 miles and charge from 5 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. But it’s the design that’s so fun and funky. Google the boxy ’60s Microbus, and all the visual homages are there: the V-shaped front panel, that pizza-sized VW logo, the towering windshield up front, the two-tone paint—it even has its motor in the back. And it’s still as square as a loaf of bread, with mile-high sides and lots of windows. Sadly, there are no plans for the eight rooftop windows that came with the old Samba bus. However, a California camper is in the works, complete with a stove, sink, and lift-up tops for those nights in the woods or trips to Woodstock. Around back, that high-lifting tailgate is more upright than a barn door, with plenty of bodywork to attach that “If this bus is a-rockin’, don’t come a-knockin’!” sticker. The ID Buzz pictured here is the short-wheelbase Euro version. Nose to tail it’s about the same length as a Mercedes C-Class sedan, with just

two rows of seats. We’ll be getting a stretchedwheelbase Buzz, with room for three rows of pews and a bigger battery under the floor for a longer range and zippier performance. There will also be optional all-wheel drive courtesy of an extra electric motor up front. But if you think the exterior is hip, wait until you step into the driver’s seat. Think of it as Ikea meets the Apple Store, with all-vegan fabrics, cool dashtop displays, and driftwood-like veneer. Those front seats are more like Barcaloungers, with twin armrests, grippy bolstering, and elevated, see-the-world positioning. Orange upholstery? Yeah, we’re digging it.

Back in the second row there’s terrific legroom and headroom, and the seats can glide backward and forward for added flexibility. Flip the backrests forward to reveal one of the Buzz’s best features: storage space. This thing is as cavernous as a Pods unit, with a high roof and flat sides and floor that make it an ideal load-hauler. This dedication to storage is visible throughout the cabin. It might be something as simple as the small pocket in the back of the front seats that’s the exact size of a cell phone, or the oversize center console that’s big enough for a laptop. All this happy, smiley joy over the arrival of the all-new ID Buzz is tempered by one heart-wrenching revelation: We won’t be getting this adorable magic bus until 2024. It seems initial production will be for the short-wheelbase model, primarily for an eager European market. U.S. drivers will have to wait for the stretched-wheelbase version. Don’t expect it to be cheap either. VW’s smaller ID.4 compact SUV kicks off at $40,760, so I reckon a base price of $48,000 to $50,000. But the chance to cruise around in a modern-day version of one of the swinging sixties’ hippest and hippiest rides? Well, that’s priceless. «

The Adventures of TINTIN

This 112-foot Westport superyacht is ready to venture to places far and wide By Howard Walker

T

here was no more enthusiastic a globe-trotter than the inquisitive, ginger-quaffed mystery-solver named Tintin. Created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé in 1929, Tintin traveled the world looking for adventure with his trusty canine sidekick, Snowy. Tintin and his joie de vivre no doubt inspired the owners of this gorgeous 112-foot, American-built Westport to name their new yacht after the lovable character. Since launching late last year, the mini-superyacht’s adventurous spirit was put to the test when it cruised from Westport’s yard in Port Angeles, Washington, through the Panama Canal, ending in Palm Beach just in time to shine at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show. After a sudden change of plans, this dreamy luxury cruiser became 48

available to purchase, listed for $17.5 million with top brokers Fraser Yachts. (It sold in April for an undisclosed amount.) Pronounced “tantan,” Tintin is the latest in Westport’s popular W 112 series. Since the 112 was introduced in 1994, 65 have been built, making it arguably the most successful superyacht ever. Part of the considerable appeal of this specific iteration is the fact that the lucky buyer will take hold of a virtually brand-new yacht with all the bugs sorted out and without the typical two-year wait. Of all the 112s out there, Tintin boasts the coolest, sexiest, craziest interior of them all. It is part floating South Beach boutique hotel, part gift shop at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The snowy-white walls are broken up by splashes of vibrant color, textured finishes, and whimsical decorations. The salon has huge windows and bleachedblond wood flooring, as well as a glass and chrome dining table surrounded by see-through acrylic chairs. This space boasts some great art too, including a waist-high, multicolored Great Dane sculpture and a near floor-to-ceiling Pop Art painting of screen siren Lauren Bacall.

Westport’s in-house design team went crazy with Lumicor, the turquoise acrylic resin that looks like the waters off the Exumas. The stunning kitchen countertop, the flybridge bar and tabletop, and the outdoor table in the cockpit are all the color of the sea and a perfect match to Tintin’s waterline hull stripe. Another unique design highlight is that terrific top-deck hardtop flybridge, with clear eisenglass panels that can be opened or closed. Three steps out and down from the flybridge take you to the shaded back deck, which features a Jacuzzi, a lounger, and even a grassy area for that extra feeling of home Snowy would adore. Part of the Westport 112’s proven sea-keeping ability comes down to its wave-cleaving hull and tough fiberglass-composite construction. Speaking of the hull, the design changes that came with the latest W series saw the previous tiny porthole-like windows replaced with swaths of tinted glass that fill the superstructure. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect yacht for family fun. We think Hergé’s Tintin would approve of his nautical namesake. «

4 Father s e r u g Fi LOCAL MEN REFLECT ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A FATHER AND TO RAISE YOUNG SONS IN THIS MOMENT IN TIME

By Paige Bowers Photography by Nick Mele

Nick Mele, Johnny, and Archer

Photographer Nick Mele says his sons, Johnny and Archer, keep him on his toes. “They have so much personality and character that I know they’re going to do something special with their lives,” he says of his children, aged 7 and 4. “My job is to make them the best version of themselves and help them avoid the big pitfalls of life.” On the family’s Instagram account, @a.social.life, Mele has captured his sons at their most impish, whether they’re climbing all over the furniture, sticking their feet in each other’s hair, pouting in a pumpkin patch, or screaming with joy. Photos of his boys also feature prominently in Mele’s new book, A Newport Summer. Mele and his wife, Molly, join in the fun—and sometimes the frustration. After all, as he says, parenting perfection is impossible. The more you try, “the more you will screw it up.” “For me, being real on that Instagram account is important,” Mele adds. “So many people are out there selling this idea of constant perfection and life isn’t that way. It’s messy and it’s hard and if you can find humor in that, great. So many people want the world to think they have it all together and there’s nothing endearing about that.” Mele’s father taught him not to worry about what other people think anyway. “I want to instill that in my children,” he says. “It’s okay not to be the same as everyone else, to be yourself, and to follow your passions.” More than anything, Mele says he and Molly just want to raise nice people. “Johnny is wild, so we try to make sure he’s as nice as possible. You can forgive a lot if people say please and thank you.”

Jay Cashmere and Cruz

Honeymoons are special for a lot of reasons. For WPTV anchorman Jay Cashmere and his wife, Kelly, theirs was the source of their first child, Cruz. “We weren’t prepared for [parenthood], but we welcomed it with open arms,” says Cashmere, whose own father raised him to look on the bright side. “Every day, parents look into the future. And I hope that when Cruz goes out into the world, he will be a responsible, loving human being.” Fatherhood has been an amazing journey so far, says Cashmere, who enjoys watching 9-year-old Cruz swim for the Palm Beach Gardens Makos and play flag football and soccer. However, parenting a child this age is not without its challenges, Cashmere admits. Now that Cruz is old enough to watch his father on the evening news, he’s able to absorb the reality of the world he’s living in, which is not always pretty. Cashmere notes that he and his wife do their best to shield Cruz from some of the harder topics on the newscast, but the questions come anyway. “I will be able to talk to him about some of these things at some point,” says Cashmere, who also has a 7-year-old daughter, Ella. “But right now, when he is so innocent and impressionable, you have to find a balance between preserving that and letting them grow up. And kids are growing up so fast today.” In the meantime, Cashmere cherishes every moment. “Cruz and I throw the football on the beach, and I look at him and watch him grow. There will come a day when he won’t want to hold my hand and spend time with me. I’m just trying to absorb it all now by making memories like this. It all goes by so quickly, but our bond will always be there.”

Gopal Rajegowda and Sunil

Gopal Rajegowda says he has done a lot of things in his life, but none of them are as amazing as being a first-time father to his son, Sunil. “When I found out my wife and I were bringing a new life into the world, I was overjoyed,” says Rajegowda, a partner in Related Companies Southeast, the real estate developer behind local projects such as The Square neighborhood and 360 Rosemary. “Watching Sunil grow has been so fascinating. He has gone from being a little baby to being able to laugh and smile and recognize me.” For Rajegowda, parenting a 10-month-old is full of simple pleasures, from seeing Sunil wake up every day and smile, to watching him crawl and learning how much he loves cantaloupe. “The older we get, the more we lose touch with the days when everything seems new and your curiosity is in overdrive,” he says. “Being a father makes you cherish and realize the things you don’t pay attention to anymore and shows you that there are so many ways to see things. When you see things differently, you can make the world a better place.” Like his father before him, Rajegowda aspires to be a role model for his son, setting a good example of what it means to be a man, and a successful one at that. And as a member of the mayor’s task force for racial and ethnic equality, Rajegowda plans to demonstrate to his son the importance of inclusivity and diversity. “I think a lot about teaching him to be an empathetic global citizen,” he says. “Coming out of COVID, we have learned that the power of human connection is important. I think my child will embrace that as he is able to interact with others throughout his life.”

Andrew Filauro and John

One-year-old John Filauro loves playing with balls. He probably comes by it honestly. After all, his father, Andrew, used to play Division 1 soccer at West Point. “My father used to tell me that he would support whatever I wanted to do as long as I gave it 100 percent,” says Filauro, managing director at Green Square Capital Advisors. “Now that I’m a father, I want to be open-minded to whatever John wants to do, as long as he works hard, too.” Right now, John works hard at throwing balls back and forth with his dad. He can seemingly spot them from a mile away. He’s walking, too, so it probably won’t be long before he’s running after those balls just like his father used to do in college. “He also loves to read,” says Filauro, who has a 4-year-old daughter, Clara, as well. “I’ll read him books, and he’ll pick up on certain things I say and point them out [on the page].” Filauro is looking forward to the moment when he can have a full-fledged conversation with his son—his daughter already has that sort of bond with her mother—and for John to be able to tell him what’s on his mind or ask for advice. For now, father and son bond over bedtime stories and nonstop play. “He will do a lot of great things if he puts his mind to something that will benefit the world,” Filauro says. “I hope he grows up to be someone who stands up for what he believes in and is kind to other people. I hope he also realizes how fortunate he is to have two parents there to support him, and that he shouldn’t be afraid to use us as resources.” «

Andrew Filauro enjoys playtime in the backyard of his West Palm Beach home with son John, 1, and daughter Clara, 4. PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JUNE 2022

CATS

WITH THE SPACE AND STYLE OF A LUXURY APARTMENT, LARGE TWINHULLED POWER CATAMARANS ARE FAST BECOMING THE MOTOR YACHT OF CHOICE FOR SMART CRUISERS. HERE ARE 10 OF OUR FAVORITES.

o

BY HOWARD WALKER

n paper, power catamarans make the perfect cruiser. They’re wide and stable, with acres of live-aboard space. They’re fast and hugely efficient too. And more and more of them are using solar energy for power. Yes, their expansive beam can make snagging a marina slip challenging, but smart boaters are finding that power cat positives far outweigh the negatives. It might be the time to try a big cat on for size.

Think of it as Florida’s finest. Aquila Yachts in St. Petersburg recently introduced what could be the coolest-looking cat of them all: its new $4 million Aquila 70. And being born and raised in the Sunshine State, it’s designed for soaking up rays. Up on its wide foredeck, you’ll find huge sun pads and forward-facing sofas, while a fully enclosed flybridge comes air-conditioned when you need to escape the heat. Out on the back deck, there’s a large table and sofas for alfresco dining. Steps lead down to a full-width beach club outfitted with a huge

hydraulically levitating platform between the hulls, if you’re looking for a place to park your tender. Below decks, there’s a quartet of staterooms, including a magnificent full-width master suite with hull windows that flood the cabin with light. Twin 1,000-hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels with joystick-controlled IPS drives—one in each hull— can thrust the Aquila to a top speed of close to 30 knots, while the 1,162-gallon tanks will take you more than 3,000 nautical miles. This is one cat that’s the real meow.

There’s no more prolific a sailing cat builder than Clearwater, Florida–based Leopard Catamarans. That being said, the yachts are actually built in South Africa by Robertson & Caine, with most crafts ending up in the charter fleets of The Moorings, Sunsail, and Footloose. But power cats are also big at Leopard; the fleet’s latest is the perfectly sized 53 Powercat, with a three-cabin layout and a spacious owner’s stateroom that fills the entire starboard hull. Launched at the 2020 Miami International Boat Show, this 53 instantly won the coveted Multihull of the Year award. As the replacement

for the previous Leopard 51, it has big hulls to fill, as this reportedly was the bestselling power cat of all time. Beautifully finished and nicely equipped, the salon is all big, comfy freestanding sofas, with a spacious galley that opens out on to the 25-foot-wide back deck. One major attraction about the 53 is its impressive seakeeping, with the ability to slice through big waves without lots of between-hull pounding. That, and its 22-knot top speed make it one Leopard that can really roar.

From the flybridge, the forward deck looks big enough to land a helicopter on. But then a descending chopper might pose a problem for someone luxuriating in the foredeck hot tub. (Did we mention the hot tub?) This French-built 67-footer from La Rochelle– based Fountaine-Pajot is all about one thing and one thing only: entertaining. That vast, teak-decked foredeck has space for a multitude of loungers, bean bags, and sun pads, plus a deep dining/relaxing conversation pit with its own door into the saloon. And being French, style is also key—from those stunning axe-shaped bow sections, to the low-slung coach roof, to the choice of interior veneers and upholstery. Très chic. The yacht’s impressive 32-foot beam allows for huge cabins—the owner’s suite stretches more than 237 square feet and includes a dressing room with a sofa and a cavernous bathroom. Twin Volvo diesels, with a choice of 300-hp or punchier 480-hp versions, can give a top speed of up to 25 knots. With the 1,057-gallon tanks brimmed, the 67 can cruise majestically for more than 1,700 nautical miles. Think of it as a five-star Fountaine of youth.

High-luxury, zero-emission globe-trotting in an all-electric power catamaran is the promise of new German boat builder Alva Yachts. Although the company was formed just a year ago, it’s about to complete its brand-new Ocean Eco 60 and has a 90-foot version waiting in the wings. The 60 is a guaranteed head turner. With its twin towering vertical bows and bold “flying” buttresses connecting the coach roof to the bows, it could be an extra out of the next Star Wars movie. With integrated solar panels filling the flybridge roof, forward overhang, and those buttresses, the 60 can produce 20kW of solar energy that gets stored in its banks of lithium batteries. These in turn power twin electric motors—owners get to decide how big—that can push the yacht at 7 knots for up to 110 nautical miles, or at 4 to 5 knots indefinitely. You can also crank up the high-capacity generator when the batteries get low. (And, of course, there’s no shortage of electricity to power up your laptop.) Clever interior design from one of the company founders, Holger Henn, has resulted in plenty of accommodation space. The starboard hull provides an owner’s stateroom with a bedroom, an adjoining den/office, and an apartment-sized bathroom.

Call it the Thunder from Down Under. Leading Aussie power cat designer Longreach is putting the finishing touches on its brand-new Longreach 44 High Performance, which packs a screaming top speed of 34 knots. The secret to its speediness? A super efficient hull shape, plus two underwater hydrofoils that lift the slender hulls to reduce drag. That, and a pair of honking 600-hp Yanmar turbo diesels. This performance element is new to the Longreach philosophy. Until now it’s been all about going as far as possible on a tank. The standard 44 typically comes with a pair of 250-hp Yanmars that, at an 8.5-knot cruising speed, sip diesel at less than 3 gallons an hour. It gives it an astonishing range of more than 3,000 nautical miles. That’s Palm Beach to Maine and back. The Longreach range of 44 and 54 models is built in Thailand by award-winning power cat maker Powerplay, which would be delighted to ship one to Florida. Don’t expect delivery any time soon, though—production is booked through 2022.

Tennis ace Rafael Nadal is one of the newest converts to the spatial benefits of power catamarans. Back in June 2020, he traded his sleek Monte Carlo 76 motor yacht called Beethoven for a brand-new Sunreef 80 power catamaran. He’d already chartered a number of power cats from the Polish builder before commissioning the azure-blue-hulled Sunreef he named Great White. The appeal? Maybe it’s the 4,000 square feet of living space, with four cabins for a total eight guests. The owner’s suite features a walk-in dressing room, sofa, and private folddown balcony. With a whopping 39-foot beam, this big cat boasts a huge covered flybridge with a wet bar, a barbecue, and acres of sun pads for tanning, plus a tender garage at the stern big enough for a small armada of Jet Skis and water toys. To satisfy his need for speed, Nadal opted for twin 1,200-hp diesels to give a top speed of 27 knots, as well as huge fuel tanks for a long range. Nadal and his wife, Maria, are from the Spanish island of Mallorca; they keep the Sunreef 80—base price around $7 million—in a slip right outside their home. “Between a catamaran and a monohull, there is no comparison. The space you have is impossible to compare,” says Nadal. “I have such great memories of my charters, I had to have one for myself.”

The benefit of twin hulls on a powerboat aren’t restricted just to huge-beam, XXL-sized gin palaces. Up in Burlington, Washington, family-run Aspen Power Catamarans has been building a range of quirky, 28- to 40-foot power cats that owners just love. Aspen’s newest offering is the multifunctional, 37-foot C108, with the immediate triple appeal of not only having outboard power, but also boasting a skinny draft of a mere 1 foot, 10 inches. And with its narrow 10-foot beam, it can be trailered. But quirky is the word here. Like other Aspen models, the new C108 features asymmetrical displacement hulls, with one hull being 35 percent thinner than the other. It’s kind of the same thinking behind an outrigger canoe. It means less drag, better fuel efficiency, and zippier performance. And while the C108 comes with twin outboards, one hull gets a 115-hp Yamaha and the other a 200-hp Yamaha. With both motors humming, this cat tops out at 26 knots, burning just a gallon of fuel per mile. The cozy saloon features a dinette opposite the galley, helm, and co-pilot seats up front, as well as a lift-up rear window. Below decks there’s a decently sized master cabin, a single, and a rather weird arrangement of a second single accessible through the head. 70

French builder Lagoon Yachts pretty much invented the power catamaran market back in the early 2000s by lopping the mast off its Lagoon 43 sailing cat to create the hugely successful Lagoon Power 43. The company’s creations have come a long way since then. Just feast your eyes on its latest offering: the spectacular 67-foot Lagoon Sixty 7 floating palace. Penned by the legendary French car designer Patrick le Quément, the lines of this twin-hulled beauty are low, sleek, and sexy. Even standing still, it looks like it’s slicing through waves at its 21-knot top speed. What’s so impressive about the new Sixty 7 is its truly massive deck areas. Up on the bow there’s a protected, sunken dining area, along with full-width, teak-decked spaces for sun loungers and pads. Add to this the expansive covered flybridge, with its alfresco kitchen and dining area, and the vast cockpit area with more nooks for dining and lounging. We love the oversized side cockpit pads that are perfect for a post-lunch snooze. Take your pick from four- or five-cabin layouts, while that massive 32-foot beam makes the saloon bigger than that of most luxury condos. Interestingly, Lagoon doesn’t try to overpower the Sixty 7. Balancing performance with fuel efficiency, engine choices are either twin 340-hp Volvo D6s or a pair of 440-hp Yanmar 6LYs.

Horizon Power Catamarans, with its U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, is one of the power cat pioneers. Its lineup includes the PC52, PC65, and flagship PC74— though it’s the 60-foot PC60 that’s the sweetheart of the range, with more than 50 sold. Big but not too big, it packs four staterooms into its 24-foot, 6-inch beam—including the option of a stunning forward-facing master suite on the main deck. The 60 also comes with the choice of an open bridge, a semi-enclosed bridge, or an enclosed and air-conditioned Skylounge, with sliding glass doors to the aft deck. Powering the PC60 is a pair of 705-hp Cummins diesels that can give a top speed of 23 knots. Throttle back to a more leisurely 9 knots and it’ll run for nearly 1,500 nautical miles on a tank. What we love about Horizon’s customer care is that every new cat is delivered to the owner fully commissioned and equipped with all tools and spares. The company’s CEO, Richard Ford, even joins the new owners for a shakedown cruise and tutorial.

Boating is all about having fun in the sun. So why not use the power of the sun to increase your fun factor? That’s the thinking from German-owned Silent Yachts, which has been building solar-powered power cats since 2010. The company’s latest model, the Silent 60, features a roof and hardtop crammed with 42 solar panels that provide juice to a 286kWh lithium battery bank. This, in turn, powers a pair of 340kW electric motors that propel the Silent 60 silently at a zero-emission cruising speed of 6 to 8 knots. Need to get home in a hurry? Push forward the throttles for a 20-knot top speed. Planning on cruising further afield—like around the world? The latest Silent 60 is available with a light, compact, inflatable kite sail that can be deployed from a small mast on the bow. Climbing as high as 400 feet, the 140-square-foot kite can haul the 30-ton yacht along at 4 to 5 knots, depending on wind strength. Or add 4 to 5 knots to the Silent 60’s electric-powered cruising speed. Impressive. « PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JUNE 2022

Pastry chef Etienne Le Bastard prepared traditional French desserts for the Marie Antoinette–themed breakfast. The croquembouche (above) features pastry puffs bound by a caramel drizzle and decorated with sugar and gold leaf. The elegant St. Honoré cake (below) consists of a ring of caramel-glazed choux sitting atop puff pastry and layered with the most decadent pastry cream.

N

utritionist and author Adelle Davis famously said, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.” In Palm Beach, where the bar on parties is constantly raised, that is advice to take to heart. After all, breakfast is as good a time as any to celebrate. For a “royal” breakfast to celebrate Palm Beach Illustrated’s April issue and its cover star, Daphne Oz, we turned to Le Bilboquet, the expert on all things French. We asked: What would Queen Marie Antoinette serve at her breakfast table? Executive pastry chef Etienne Le Bastard answered with an over-the-top menu of pastries traditionally served in PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JUNE 2022

France’s royal courts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For example, the croquembouche was invented in eighteenth-century France by chef-to-royalty MarieAntoine Carême. And the earliest form of réligieuse (so named because it looks like a nun in habit, though we’d argue that eating one is a religious experience) was concocted by the chef of Catherine de’ Medici—and presumably served to the queen. A royal table relies on more than food for its wow factor. Glitz, glamour, and a touch of decadence are also key ingredients—we do, after all, feast with our eyes first. For this table, interior designer Jackie Armour of Jupiter-based JMA Interior Design imagined a richly textured mise en scène layered with luxe fabrics, tiered cake stands, multipattern china, and an abundance of flowers and feathers. For some cheeky fun, a “Ring for Champagne” button ensured coupes were always filled with rosé Champagne. Doesn’t every queen worth her tiara have one? « 74

Few experiences are as quintessentially Floridian as an alfresco feast after a round of golf. Savor that scenario and then some at Honeybelle, a new restaurant by chef Lindsay Autry inside the PGA National Resort. A play on the citrus of the same name, Honeybelle captures all there is to love about Old Florida cuisine, elevated by Autry’s ability to transform locally sourced ingredients into food you’ll want to eat again and again. “Honeybelle is a collection of my experiences as a chef, representing my Southern and Mediterranean roots while embracing the more casual side of myself and the meals I enjoy [while] sitting under the South

Florida sunshine,” says Autry. “If I could pinpoint one side of my personality that shines in Honeybelle, it would be my whimsical side. [It is] a nod to my nostalgic roots and a fun approach to an outdoor dining restaurant that is fulfilling and approachable.” That whimsy comes across in the decor (which Autry describes as nouveau Golden Girls) and in dishes like tuna tartare with fish-shaped crackers and a Hot Pie pizza topped with pepperoni, pickled peppers, and hot honey. Even devotees of the fried chicken at Autry’s West Palm eatery, The Regional, will be converted by Honeybelle’s rendition, infused with lemon and rosemary and served with such fixings as collard green slaw, mashed potatoes, and buttermilk biscuits—because everything’s better on a biscuit. TASTE Q&A

FORD Focus

ALISSA DRAGUN

We chat with Jeremy Ford about life as a FATHER AND A CHEF By Mary Murray

C

hef Jeremy Ford is many things: the winner of Top Chef season 13, the co-host of Tru TV’s Fast Foodies, and the culinary mastermind behind Miami’s Stubborn Seed and The Butcher’s Club, a new modern steak house inside the PGA National Resort. But perhaps the descriptor he’s most proud of is father of three. The native Floridian always takes Father’s Day off and spends it with his daughters the best way he knows how: picnicking by the water, playing some Rummikub, and cooking dinner at home. PBI recently caught up with Ford to chat about family, cooking, and his latest venture. (pgaresort.com)

At The Butcher’s Club in PGA National Resort, chef Jeremy Ford crafts crudos using locally caught fish and bites such as Gruyère cheesy puffs, jamón serrano, and black truffle jalapeño poppers.

WILL PRYCE

MICHAEL PISARRI

PBI: Growing up, did you cook at home with your parents much? What would you make? Ford: We did a lot of grilling. My dad or my uncle would go fishing and they would bring it back to the house. We used to grill cobia. It’s one of

78

my first memories of paying attention to the grill. And a lot of fried chicken, a lot of that. How do you like to share your love of cooking with your kids? I love to cook with them, they don’t like to cook with me. My oldest, she’s very interested in baking and pastry. If I cook dinner, she’ll be more apt to take the dessert preparation. She does a really good flan, but my favorite thing she’s ever made was this gooey brownie-Oreo thing.

What’s something your kids like that surprises you? My 14-year-old eats everything because I started her very, very young growing vegetables and stuff at the house. She does really well with raw fish, which is strange to me. It’s a textural problem for most people. We were in L.A. shooting season two [of Fast Foodies] and she came to stay with me for about a week on her summer break. It was so cool because I took her out to Spago—Wolfgang Puck’s flagship—and the waiter was so shocked that she was eating caviar and the little raw salmon “ice cream cone” thing that he does. She loved all of that stuff. What would be your top tips for preventing picky eating in kids? One, you have to lead by example. If you’re eating mac and cheese out of a box, they’re going to want mac and cheese out of a box. It starts with the parents leading by example and showing that they eat their vegetables. Secondly, I think when you’re younger you’re more apt to be stubborn, so you’ve got to really start breaking that young instead of waiting until they’re already set in their ways. And then introduce things without forcing. Forcing a child is the worst thing to do, because you get frustrated, the child gets pissed off, and no one wins that battle. What excites you most about creating food for The Butcher’s Club? The Butcher’s Club is actually the food that I like to eat. I like simple. I love eating at Stubborn Seed—don’t get me wrong—but I crave meat and potatoes. When those doors open at 5 o’clock, [I’m] the first order, getting a steak, some creamed spinach, and the bravas.

PREZZO, Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton: Originally opened in 1989 and reincarnated in 2017, Prezzo has long been a standard-bearer for traditional Italian cuisine. Mussels Fra Diavolo is a signature starter: PEI mussels, toasted chili flakes, tomato, and fresh basil. (eatprezzo.com)

Oysters may get all the glory, but mussels are more popular worldwide. They lack the briny flavor of oysters, which makes them more compatible with many distinctive and exotic preparations. TO TRY

Combine passion, energy, and attention to detail, and you have Deke’s in Delray, a stateof-the-art coffee roaster. Think terroir only applies to wine? Deke’s works with farmers to source “the highest cup scores on the planet,” pays above Fair Trade prices, then roasts each lot separately to ensure the most authentic flavor notes possible. In addition to classic espresso, cappuccino, and lattes, Deke’s crafts kombucha, cold brew, and a special house milk (a non-dairy alternative made with cashews, coconut, almonds, and dates). They are adamant about using no syrups or sweeteners to distract from the natural flavor of the coffee. Rotating local vendors provide baked goods on weekends, and kids can be part of the experience too with a “babyccino” of either steamed milk or kombucha. (dekesindelray.com)

While you can indulge in lunch or dinner at Bond Street Ale and Coffee (formerly Bond and Smolders) in the East Boynton Beach Riverwalk Plaza, the café is best known for its European-style breakfast and baked goods, available all day. Choose from a variety of quiches (including kale, mushroom, salmon, or the classic Lorraine), a customizable breakfast sandwich on a brioche bun, the Banjo Jack Special (scrambled eggs with mushrooms, spinach, tomato, and goat cheese), or the Poach di Parma (prosciutto di Parma, poached eggs, baby arugula, Parmesan garlic truffle aioli, and seasonal melon). Owner Philip Van Egmond, a former sculptor, used his artistic talents in both the decor and menu. “I wanted to offer a different approach than a traditional French bakery,” he says. “Our dishes reflect a global influence and the flavors of street food and appeal to a younger audience.” (bondstreetaleandcoffee.com) —M.S.

popular Mexican Michelada are some of the simplest and tastiest examples of low-proof beer cocktails that are perfect for this hot weather. Beer-based libations VI CO have a long, rich history. CA S E C FRAN Shakespeare and Dickens both alluded to them in their work, and the most well-known of the beer cocktails, the Shandy, is thought to derive from the British slang phrase “shant of gatter” or “pub water.” The pub water of Mexico, the classic Michelada, can kick up the flavor of a nice, cold beer. It traditionally consists of beer, salt, lime, spice, and tomato juice, but my variation brings a tropical twist to this low-voltage drink with the addition of passion fruit and habanero. Now you can go crush summer and thank me later. —Jules Aron TAYLOR AMOS

erman white wine was enormously popular in America during the 1970s and ’80s—not just Riesling but Liebfraumilch brands such as Blue Nun, too. This improbable situation persisted until Chardonnay mania swept the country, at which point German whites were ridiculed for being too sweet, even though the most popular Chardonnays of the 1990s had sugar levels higher than the average Kabinett-level Riesling. American consumers have become more sophisticated in recent decades, and Riesling is back. Much has changed in Germany as well, where vintners are making wine for the international market and wine laws have been overhauled to make labels less confusing (or so the Germans believe). Dry wine is now in vogue, and there’s an increasing awareness of how food-friendly the wines really are. And thanks to global warming, vineyards are producing more and more red wine. Most importantly, a

84

new generation of young winemakers has taken over family estates, and they’ve banded together in an organization called Generation Riesling. Here, we spotlight some of the estates to watch. WEINGUT KELLER, RHEINHESSEN: Along with his wife, Julia, ninthgeneration winemaker Klaus Peter Keller has put this long-neglected region on the wish list of international collectors. Keller’s training in South Africa and Burgundy provided models for producing modern, terroirbased wines. His G-Max Riesling Trocken has become the Rheinhessen’s first cult wine, selling for $2,500 in a good vintage. (weingutkeller.de) WEINGUT DR. CRUSIUS, NAHE: The Crusius family may be able to trace their winegrowing lineage back 13 generations to 1565, but Rebecca Crusius is not yet 30. She shares responsibilities with her father, Peter, and focuses on less oak, more acidity, and a lighter style, particularly in their Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) bottlings from

Mühlberg, Bastei, and Kupfergrube ($35-$60). (weingut-crusius.de) WEINGUT A.J. ADAM, MOSEL: At the age of 21, while studying enology at Geisenheim University, Andreas Adam revived his family’s wine estate; he’s since been joined by his younger sister, Barbara Gudelj. His 12-acre property turns out Riesling Trocken (dry) and Kabinett (off-dry), as well as Spätlese and Auslese (slightly sweet). All retail for under $50, and most are available in the United States. (aj-adam.de) WEINGUT GEORG BREUER, RHEINGAU: Established in 1880, this estate is now run by Theresa Breuer, great-granddaughter of the founder, along with her uncle, Heinrich. They control 99 acres of organically farmed vineyard sites in Rüdesheim, Rauenthal, and Lorch; the range begins with their Rüdesheim Estate Riesling ($33) and soars to the heights of Berg Schlossberg Riesling ($395). (georg-breuer.com) WEINGUT PETER JAKOB KÜHN, RHEINGAU: The Kühn family has been making wine in the region for 230 years, and Peter Bernhard Kühn has taken over from his father as winemaker. Their entry-level Jacobus Riesling Trocken ($25) is made in a dry style; richer options include Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Auslese ($295) and Trockenbeerenauslese ($415). (weingutpjkuehn.de)

From left: Weingut Gunderloch in Rheinhessen; German Riesling is enjoying a resurgence in relevance and popularity.

WEINGUT KARL HAIDLE, WÜRTTEMBERG: Moritz Haidle, a fan of hip-hop and graffiti, studied winemaking and apprenticed in Australia, California, and France before taking over his grandfather’s estate. In addition to Riesling and other white grape varieties such as Kerner, he also makes Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), notably Schnaiter Burghalde Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs ($70). (weingut-karl-haidle.de) WEINGUT GUNDERLOCH, RHEINHESSEN: After completing his studies, Johannes Hasselbach traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Chile before taking over the family business. He works in a modern, low-alcohol style, producing vineyard-designated wines from Nackenheimer Rothenberg and Nierstein Pettenthal (both around $70), as well as sweeter Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. DESIGN

Backstory

While real estate agents often stress the importance of curb appeal, Floridians know the backyard can be the most important movement in a home’s symphony. For this East Boca spec home, designer Trina Hazley of Trina Hazley Design worked with Skymar Custom Homes and Imagine Luxury Homes to deliver a backyard melody sure to enchant potential buyers. “My favorite aspect of this space is that it is in the center of the home and accessible from almost every room, therefore creating an indoorout living experience,” Hazley says.

The designer created multiple outdoor living areas to illustrate the property’s expansiveness and potential diversity of purpose. Lounge chairs line the pool, while dining and conversational seating nooks are tucked under the fan-cooled covered patio. Hazley also gave significant thought to the paver pattern and size. She needed ample space for the furniture, but wanted to ensure there was enough of the diamond paver pattern to make a statement. And what would a finale be without a standing-ovation-worthy moment? “Our goal was to create a beautiful functional space with a wow factor,” adds Hazley. “This is where the fire feature comes into play.” (trinahazleydesign.com) —Liza Grant Smith

The Homes of Henry Harding

Train your eye to spot residences by this lauded architect By Marie Penny Palm Beach is known for its “Big Five” architects: John Volk, Marion Sims Wyeth, Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio, and Howard Major. However, there are many other architects who contributed to the Palm Beach style. For instance, Henry Harding (1904-1984) designed more than 400 residences in South Florida during his 40-year career. He trained at Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania and was a draftsman for both Marion Sims Wyeth and Howard Major before opening his own office in Palm Beach and, later, Ocean Ridge. How do you know it’s a Harding? He is best known for his interpretation of the Bermuda and Regency styles, and his clean lines and symmetrical facades are modern in their expression. Get to know Harding and his work via these three local residences.

1

1. EVERGLADES ISLAND Designed in 1957, this Bermudastyle home was featured in a 1960 issue of Florida Architecture. To make the most of the lot’s location on the Intracoastal, Harding thoughtfully situated all the living areas with a lake view around the terrace and pool.

2. NORTH LAKE WAY In this circa-1960, French Regency– style home, Harding chose to emphasize balance, proportion, and ornamental detail. 90

3. THE MAISONETTES The Maisonettes are located just south of the Boynton Inlet in Ocean Ridge. Designed in 1965, their distinctive Bermuda-style roof lines, colonial windows, and smooth white exteriors are a fine example of Harding’s architectural language.

Henry Harding was responsible for many important contributions to Palm Beach’s architectural style, including these three local residences, from top: Everglades Island, North Lake Way, and The Maisonettes.

BALANCE FITNESS

Local fitness instructor Montana Globerman pumped up the volume and creativity of her workouts and has amassed a devoted fan following for what she calls The Montana Method. After a decade of teaching both in studios and privately, Globerman took time off to have children. It was after her second child that she realized she missed moving, teaching, and interacting with the community around her. As a result, she developed The Montana Method—a full-body workout that blends Pilates, barre, dance, and yoga—and began teaching classes out of her garage. The positive response led Globerman to open her own studio in Delray Beach two years ago. In addition to in-studio classes offered seven days a week, she has a digital library of 200-plus workouts. What’s unique about the program other than its fitness, flexibility, and balance benefits? Perhaps the most distinctive component is the soundtrack. The workouts are musically driven, and Globerman is very passionate about her playlists, which she often posts to Spotify and include everyone from Jay-Z to Coldplay to Justin Timberlake. “There’s something really special about the connection between music and movement, and you’ll always feel it in our classes,” Globerman says. “Fair warning: We like it loud!” (themontanamethod.com) —Liza Grant Smith

PAMPERING VIA PARIS French mystique has touched down in Palm Beach with the arrival of a freestanding Sisley-Paris boutique at Via Flagler by The Breakers. “Our sunny sanctuary was a natural fit for the family-owned French beauty brand’s fourth location in the U.S.,” says James Maki, president of Sisley United States. “We have a devoted local clientele in the Palm Beach area and our business has been explosive. It made complete sense to select this beautiful new alfresco shopping plaza surrounded by other luxurious brands and eateries as our next home.”

The company specializes in phytotherapy and aromatherapy, paying attention to plant-extract dosage and synergy to ensure exceptional performance. But shopping Sisley’s line of high-quality cosmetics isn’t the only draw—the boutique may be only 634 square feet, but that’s enough space for an exclusive spa cabin, where customers can experience Sisley’s radiance-enhancing and anti-aging facial treatments.

The store’s small-butserene ethos aligns with the vision of Hubert d’Ornano, who founded the brand in 1976 and opted to market it only in the most prestigious points of sale so that in-store interactions and product recommendations could be kept personal. Note, too, the walls swathed in a luxe print from hand-blocked wallpaper designer Atelier d’Offard out of Tours, France. Look around and you’ll also spot three pieces of original concept art by Polish artist Bronislaw Krzysztof, who designed the caps of several Sisley fragrances and a ceiling in the spa cabin that depicts biloba leaves, one of Sisley’s signature ingredients. Whether you come to purchase products or get pampered, the elegant space is a haven tucked away amid one of Palm Beach’s most popular destinations. (viaflagler.com; sisley-paris.com) —Skye Sherman

WELLNESS

Sound SLEEP

When it comes to practicing good sleep hygiene, common recommendations include reducing electronic usage in the bedroom, meditating, and limiting sugar and caffeine intake throughout the day. Should struggles persist, West Palm Beach–based therapist and reiki practitioner Jessica Mork of Promenade Counseling helps her clients search for a deeper why. What’s keeping you up at night may be tied to unresolved stress, trauma, anxiety, or depression, which can show up as intrusive thoughts

and spike your cortisol levels at night. Some medications and supplements also interfere with sleep. “It’s important to become connected and curious about your [unique] experience,” says Mork, who offers 30- and 60-minute reiki sessions and in-person and virtual therapy. “Take a daily 15-minute reflection to journal about your worries. During those waking hours, solve the problems you can and seek support for ones requiring backup. Be proactive.” (promenadecounseling.com) —Flose LaPierre

MENTAL HEALTH

COURTESY OF THE ICAHN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AT MOUNT SINAI

The New FRONTIER By Daphne Nikolopoulos Treatment for depression has traditionally been limited to antidepressant medication. Now there is ketamine therapy, a game-changing treatment for those with severe depression and suicidal tendencies. PBI spoke to Dr. Eric Nestler, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and member of Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Depression Task Force of nine international scientists working to better understand and treat the disease. (hopefordepression.org) PBI: Some 112 million people suffer from depression and anxiety, yet about half don’t respond to medication. Why is that? Nestler: Until ketamine came along, there was one [course] of action: mechanisms discovered more than 60 years ago. Depression and anxiety are heterogeneous syndromes [they have many root causes], so one medication doesn’t fit all. We need a collection of treatments so we can [tailor] the mechanism to the person. Are we any closer to being able to predict what causes depression so we can treat it more accurately? While we have seen dramatic advances in the

Ketamine therapy provides a gamechanging treatment option for patients experiencing severe depression.

treatment of cancer and heart disease, we have not seen that yet in psychiatry. We all have the feeling that we’re at an inflection point and will be seeing those advances in the next decade or so. The brain is the last frontier of clinical progress because it’s the most complicated. Ketamine is showing promise in treating severe depression. Can you explain how it works? It was a discovery made in humans about 20 years ago, based on knowledge that chemicals in the brain other than serotonin are also important in regulation of mood and depression. Ketamine is thought to act on a system called glutamate, which is just another chemical in the brain, like serotonin. The investigators gave ketamine to depressed patients and were struck by the rapid antidepressant response in a portion of those patients. What’s the difference between ketamine and traditional antidepressants? All of today’s antidepressants, other than ketamine, have to be given for many weeks. It could take weeks or months to find the right medication, the right dose. And even then, the improvement builds over time. What was so striking about

ketamine was that people showed that antidepressant response right away. That led finally to the FDA approval of Esketamine, a chemical variant for the treatment of depression. Sounds like a major breakthrough. There’s one major caveat: Ketamine cannot be given orally. It either has to be injected or [inhaled via] nasal spray. The FDA requires people to [receive treatment] in the presence of a doctor, pharmacist, or nurse. Is that because it can be addicting? At the prescribed dose, it’s very safe. At higher doses, it can be addicting. That’s why the FDA requires the supervision. How is the Depression Task Force working to bring this therapy into the mainstream? The main focus of the work right now is to take that discovery, which was a big one in the field, and leverage it into a pill. What new chemical entity can we make that does what ketamine does but can be given by mouth and has the intended safety profile built in? I think it’s going to be a couple of years before we see that advance. Maybe one day science will deliver something that is more of a cure than a treatment. We want to medicalize, normalize psychiatry so it’s like every other discipline. [In theory,] a person who is depressed could go to the doctor, get a brain scan, a blood test, maybe a genetic test, indicating what type of depression they have and what treatment they need. The goal is to cure them for life.

Crazy for l CUCUMBERS You may hear “cucumber” and think “spa,” and with good reason. Cucumbers can soothe eyes and reduce puffiness, which is why they’re often placed over the eyes during a facial. You can make a scrub for your skin with cucumber and readily available ingredients like sea salt and coconut oil. The benefits of cucumbers go beyond the topical, however. Nutritionally, these relatives of the gourd are high in potassium, magnesium, and vitamin K and may help regulate your blood sugar. Consisting of about 96 percent water, cucumbers help hydrate you while providing fiber that fills you up. This summer, consider consuming them in salads, flavored water, as a tonic, or simply as raw, chilled spears. —Erika Klein

LAST WORD glamorous. And did I mention the cameos by my shorter half, Simon Doonan? What’s an interior design hack everyone should know? Always buy a chandelier that is bigger than you think you need and more expensive than you think you can afford. Whenever I’ve skimped on lighting, I’ve lived to regret it. What’s been a defining moment in your career? My career-defining moment actually happened before I had a career. My pottery teacher in college told me I had no talent and should become a lawyer. It was the best advice I never took; I think every creative person needs a naysayer to rebel against. My career has been an unimaginable creative odyssey, and it probably wouldn’t have happened if someone hadn’t told me I couldn’t do it. Where does your passion for design come from? I’d like to think it’s all me, me, me, but the truth is I was blessed with an extremely creative father (lawyer by vocation, painter by avocation) and a groovy mother whose ebullient sense of color inspires me to this day. Tell us about your new interior design instructional series debuting on Wondrium. For more than 25 years I’ve been creating products and interiors designed to bring modern American glamour to the world. Yes, I am very, very old—which means, of course, that I am also very, very wise—and I’m thrilled to be able to share my wisdom with Wondrium’s audience. After the course, viewers will have the background and tools they need to create exceptional spaces that reflect themselves at their most

REAL TALK WITH...

Jonathan Adler

The potter and designer dishes on decorating hacks, life on Palm Beach, and more BY KATHERINE LANDE

Adler often incorporates bright colors and patterns into his designs.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and what would you create? I’m a restless designer—the more I make, the more I want to make. I’ve been lucky to work with some of the best companies out there over the years, but I’ve never designed a car. Detroit, if you’re reading this, give me a ring! What do you love most about living on Palm Beach? The white of the clouds, the blue of the water, and the yellow of the sun. Mother Nature is the best designer, and she was showing off when she created Palm Beach. Describe a perfect Palm Beach day. It starts by fighting with Simon about whose turn it is to walk the dog and make a pot of tea. Once that’s settled, we bike over to Sant Ambroeus—their elephant ear cookies are responsible for every ounce of my back fat. Then back home to read The New York Times, The New York Post, WWD, Daily Mail, Palm Beach Illustrated, and the latest draft of whatever book Simon is working on. Then it’s Zoom meetings with my team all day, punctuated by lunch at my bestie Liz Lange’s house. In the afternoon I bodysurf, Zoom some more, and then have an early dinner (hey, it is Palm Beach) usually back at Liz’s house. When someone’s as great a hostess as she is, it would be a crime not to take advantage of it!
