Editors Message: Lots of material in the 56-page Porsche Patter this month. We are half way through spring and the weather has been a bit up and down, but the pollen count consistently high! We have a photographer for our autocross events named Ricardo De Leon who contributed to Greg’s article on page 18. I was able to attend the Social Dinner at Kecco’s and the food was really good, hopefully we have an encore there later in the year. I’m looking forward to doing some of our tours and the John Hopkins drive and Beach Picnic sounds like a great time for the whole family. Of course don’t miss registering for the Garage Tour which opens on May 11th and will fill in minutes for certain.

Happy 5th anniversary to Aaron & Harley Magden and thanks for hosting Cars & Corn beef at Mikey & Mel’s, which our friend Vu does a great job organizing. For the latest events and news follow us on Porsche Club of America - Chesapeake Region | Facebook and Chesapeake Region PCA (@chesapeakepca) • Instagram photos and videos Thanks James B Beavan III

Presidents Message Ron Farb

Hey Chesapeake Region PCA April is behind us and I for one could have done without it. I went to a Zone 2 PCA Presidents meeting in Winchester VA where I caught COVID. Uggg. Unfortunately the next day I did the Eastern Shore Tour to the Suicide Bridge and then ate lunch with everyone. To the best of my knowledge I did not infect anyone but I hate to think how bad it could have been. And yes – I had been double vaccinated and boosted. Fortunately I am finally starting to feel better now other than my 5K run training for Porsche Parade has taken a huge hit. The Eastern Shore Tour drive was great! I knew our Tour Committee would put on a fantastic first drive and they didn’t disappoint. Also thanks to Tom D for being the guest tour master and planning everything. I don’t think I had anyone in front of my small group for more than a minute or so the entire time! The roads were just perfect and I had to marvel how some of them were truly only a foot or two above the water. It really was just a great, relaxing, enjoyable drive followed by a fun lunch at the Suicide Bridge Restaurant. All our activities are now in full swing so I hope everyone has been reading the eBlasts, viewing the calendar entries on our Web site, or checking out Facebook to track all the events we have going on. You can also go to MotorsportReg.com and click “Find Events” at the top and then enter “PCA – Chesapeake”.

Fun Fact – Chesapeake PCA had 1049 primary members at the end of April. As far as I can tell, this is the largest we have ever been! Additional details continue to be worked out for the 100-Car Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Toy Drive, Fundraiser, and Rocky Point picnic on 26 June. The latest is that the Concours Committee will run an informal Concours at the park where the categories will be: Best Classic, Best Modified, Oldest, Newest, Most Colorful, People's Choice, Most Years Owned, and Shortest Time Owned. It’s only been a week but I am a tad nervous that our initial registration and donation numbers are a little low for this epic all day event and fundraiser. We’re doing this for a fantastic cause and it will be an amazing day with the 100-car police escorted parade and follow-on picnic. However, as I write this we only have 31 cars registered (our Ice Cream Tours fill up faster) and have raised a bit more than $4,000 out of our $25,000 goal. If only 10% of our membership joins the drive, then we get the 100 cars and if each of our 1064 members donates only $25, then we can also meet our fundraising goal. So please don’t procrastinate and go ahead and REGISTER for this amazing day and help me relax J. I actually got the idea for these activities after talking to some folks at Everglades Region PCA earlier this year. They had just held their 5th Annual Porsche & Friends Parade to Golisano Children’s Hospital with more than 170 cars in attendance and their associated fundraiser raised – wait for it - $530,000!!! Talk about incredible. You can read about their Parade at https://egs.pca.org/photos/ - just scroll down for the article. Now that we’ve been getting some nice weather, I’ve been doing the Cars and Coffee circuit. I’ve hit some of the long established ones like Hunt Valley Horsepower, Church of the Holy Donut (Burtonsville), and Lost in the 50’s (Glen Burnie). However, I think my new favorite is the monthly Mikey & Mel’s Cruise In (Maple Lawn, Fulton). Lots of Porsches, Ferraris, and some other very nice cars. It’s a no-brainer if you live in Howard County.

As always, if you haven’t met me or any of the Chesapeake Board members, then please come up and introduce yourselves to us at any of our events. Ron

Member Names & Join Date: Rich & Donna Potere, joined PCA in 2018 Car(s): 2018 Macan, 2022 Cayman

Have you served on any Regional or National committees: Not yet… What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: My affinity for Porsche culture… When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): I have been a Porsche fan since I was very young. When my son bought his first Porsche (2004 996 C2) before me, I knew it was time for me to get off my horse. My first Porsche was a 2017 Macan which, quickly turned into a 2018 Macan. That led to a 2001 996 C4 Cab that I purchased in 2019, which has since been traded up for a recently delivered 2022 Cayman. I’ve lost control…

What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: I have only had the opportunity to attend a few tech sessions, which were great. I am looking forward to getting out on a few drives.

What is your favorite PCA memory: My job has kept me from participating in a lot of functions, other than a few tech gatherings. Now that I’m retiring, I am looking forward to getting more involved. Thanks goes out to Steve Wood for getting me more involved in the club!

What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: Don’t wait to get involved. The members in this region are a great group of people. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: It’s a tie between 2: 1979 911 Carrera Turbo is what started it all for me, but it doesn't beat the technology in a 2022 Turbo S. Anything additional you would like to share about yourself (Family/Work/Etc): We are out on vacation for the week.

Socials In Review Marsha & Steve Buss

The Social committee was busy in April. We had two breakfasts this month. On April 2nd members met at First Watch in Timonium and Eggcellence in Annapolis. After the breakfasts there were impromptu drives through the southern Anne Arundel and Baltimore County countryside’s. On April 19th we had a Social Dinner at Kecco’s Woodfire in Reisterstown. The food was delicious, and a fun time was had by all. The Social Committee has planned a breakfast on May 7th to coincide with the Delmarva tour. The breakfast will be at the Cracker Barrel on the Eastern Shore beginning at 8 am. Early arrival is encouraged since no reservations are accepted. The May Social dinner will be on Tuesday the 17th at the Yellowfin Restaurant in Eastport. There is currently a waiting list. If you registered and cannot attend, please go to Motorsportsreg.com and cancel your registration. Thank you. The June Breakfast on the 4th will be at Eggcellence in Annapolis prior to the Tech Event. The June Social Dinner on the 21st is on the books. 2021 Crab Feast: We’re Back!! With COVID receding in our rearview mirror, we’re back! For the 15th consecutive year (not counting last year’s canceled event), the Chesapeake Region PCA Crab Feast will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 28th- rain or shine! Bring your Porsche and sense of humor to the Feast for a non-competitive car show where cleanliness and condition do not matter. Our tongue and cheek awards to the winners of the Region’s annual picnic are always fun and unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal. (Think it of as a midsummer’s version of the Bob and Manny Show without presents.) Trophies and door prizes are compliments of Porsche of Silver Spring! As with every Crab Feast past, it is the food and venue that keeps Chesapeake Region members coming back for more. There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, dogs, soft drinks and beer that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide. Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 14th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks. Think fun family outing! This year’s event is again a little bit retro. Due to the lateness of the Porsche Parade this year, we’ve moved the event back to its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day. And the time is moved back as well to allow us to enjoy the cooler early evening air and breezes. We’ll start at 3:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. Registration will open on July 28th on MSR (Motorsports Registration). You will be asked to bring a salad, dessert, or side-dish. This year’s increase in cost to $40 for adults and $15 for 13-17 year-olds is due to the very high prices of crabs in 2021. The Crab Feast is Free for children 12 and under. Look for an eblast with reminders and details on how to register! Questions? Contact Ellen Beck at ebeck944@comcast.net or Bob Gutjahr at Robert.g.Gutjahr@leidos.com See everyone at Kemptown Park on Saturday, 28 August!

Autocross In Review Words: Greg Hartke; Photos: Ricardo De Leon

I’m happy to say that the Autocross season is now officially in full swing! In typical CHS fashion, as of 2 weeks before AX#1, we had 23 drivers registered (the registration cap is 65) and I was (as always) getting panicky. With 1 week remaining, we were up to 44 and I was fervently hoping we would fill the event. Then of course, boom! 21 entries in the last week and we easily filled the registration. Happens every time and I get panicky every time. You’d think I’d know better by now, but I never seem to learn. ;)

After the AX School was held in early April (reported in my last column), AX#1 was held at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, MD on Saturday April 16th. As I mentioned, the registration was full (we had 65 drivers) and the weather was great – it was a bit chilly early but warmed up nicely as the event proceeded. Mark Hubley delivered the AX trailer as usual and, as has been the norm lately, John Cho showed up early to help CHS AX Co-chair Brad Martinez build the course. John was incensed because he forgot his spotlight, but when I asked Brad if he wanted my flashlight to reference the course map while he and John built the course in the dark (we start well before sunrise), he said, “For what?” Oh, to have young eyes again. ;) It was a big course and took Brad and John quite a while to put together, but they got it done in good order. In the meantime, I set up and assembled all the other equipment, including the new stand for the timing board after one of the old ones was broken in disassembly after the AX School two weeks previously. It was already broken and had been for as long as I’ve been Co-chair. It always required careful treatment, so after disassembly when packing up after the AX School, it was just “brokener”. ;) I built a new fixture out of PVC the day before AX#1 and was pleased to see that it worked fine and, in fact, better than the old one because the new fixture had better alignment. In hindsight, the old one should have been replaced long ago, so its demise after the AX School was a good thing.

18

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) You never know how set up will proceed and this time, I had some problems. Try as I might, I could not get the equipment connected to the internet, which is necessary for live timing. Everything seemed to be working, but no connection. I worked on this for quite a while, so long that I fell behind getting everything ready and had to give up when Brad and I had to go out and test the course. By then, Registrar Meilyng WigneyBurmaka had arrived, so I turned the problem over to her while Brad and I went out to finalize the course.

That took quite a while. There were some unusual features to this course and Brad and I had to do a fair amount of tweaking to smooth it out and make sure it was safe. The finishing sequence was a big sweeper

that fed into the stop box, requiring a long stop box because it was so fast. In the end, Brad decided to block off the entry road and extend the stop box into the road and that worked very well. We cleaned up some kinks, tweaked some placements, and made sure the course was safe, ending up with a course that was by all accounts fast and fun. Meilyng also spent quite a while trying to get our computer connected to the internet, but she got no further than I did. We were both rather peeved by all this because there was no obvious reason why we couldn’t connect. Our only guess (having seen this once or twice in previous years) was that we had overrun the data limit on our wireless plan (we have a limited plan as a cost-saving measure), but even that’s just a guess. In the end, Meilyng saved the day by using her personal phone as a hotspot (she has an unlimited plan) to connect our computers to the internet, but even that led to limitations at times that we had to work around. Successfully, of course. Just another day at the office for the AX team. ;) In the meantime, Lisa Gritti showed up with Porsche-shaped sugar cookies (!) that Meilyng thought were just for her, so Brad and I never even got a sniff of them. When we were putting equipment away at the end of the event, Lisa told us that the cookies were for Brad, Meilyng, and me, so naturally I had lots of fun accusing Meilyng of hogging the cookies all day. ;) Thanks a bunch, Lisa!

19

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) Words: Greg Hartke; Photos: Ricardo De Leon Unfortunately, Brad had left after assembling the course because he had a nasty sinus infection that left him feeling miserable (thanks for doing the hard part for us, Brad!), but we managed. We got started a bit later than anticipated because of our internet connection problems, but it wasn’t a big deal. Once we did start racing, it didn’t take long to see that we had a fast course on our hands and that we had certainly done the right thing in extending the stop box. We ran two heats with every driver getting 6 runs and finished just before 2:30 PM. Perfect! Brad and I like to finish just about that time so that participants can get home with at least some time left to their afternoon. Among the P-cars, the fastest driver overall was Dave C. in Class I, coming in at 46.262 sec. Second was POT’s Howard L. in Class S5 at 46.361 sec in his very new Racing Yellow car, which I mention because I’m partial to the color (since that’s what I have ;) ). Norm F. was 3rd at 46.516 sec in his recently obtained (and very fast) car in S5. Nice to see Norm again; I don’t think he’s been down to see us from Pa. since before CoVID. Scott B. was 4th overall among the Porsches at 46.815 sec, driving in S5. Kevin K. from POT was 5th overall driving in S4 with 47.068 and provided me with a fun video of his best run. 6th overall was (newcomer to AX) Eric S. at 47.756 sec driving in Class I, followed by Mark H. in 7th with his new (to him) P-car at 47.773 driving in S4. I’ve noticed over the last couple of years that classes S4 and S5 (and P4 and P5) have grown dramatically and

20

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) Words: Greg Hartke; Photos: Ricardo De Leon the competition in those classes has really grown fierce with really good drivers. This observation doesn’t come from just what I see with CHS, but also what I see at the POT races. Very interesting trend! As I mentioned, we finished just before 2:30 and with everyone pitching in, we had the trailer packed and ready to leave by no later than 3:15. By the end of racing, those of us running the event are pretty worn down and very much appreciate the help we receive in getting everything together to be stored away in the trailer. You folks are the best! We really had a great time at this event with a fun, fast course and those of us who run the events are really happy to see everyone enjoying themselves (and their cars) so much. I was looking over the statistics from the event, though, and the one thing that really stood out was that for some reason, we had fewer Porsches out there for AX#1 than is our norm. There were 65 drivers and we had 26 Porsches and 39 Guests, which works out to 40% Porsches. I wish we could get more PCA Members out there having fun with us, but I guess it’s a numbers thing. POT doesn’t have this problem, but they have considerably more Members to draw from than we do and certainly that’s going to make a huge difference. I know better than to draw conclusions from one event, anyway, so we’ll see how things shape up after a few more races. Thanks to everyone who came out and made AX#1 a great event. If you weren’t there, you missed a lot of fun! Keep in mind that AX#2 is scheduled for Sunday May 29th at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD. This is a fabulous venue and this race is our one event for the year away from PGS, so come join us. As always, if you think you have an interest in AX and would like to see what it’s like, come out and register for Taste of Autocross where you’ll receive multiple runs on the course riding with an instructor. You won’t regret it! See you soon! Greg Hartke

Member Profile: Tom & Kaye Morton James B. Beavan III Member Names & Join Date: Tom and Kaye Morton joined the Chesapeake region of PCA in July 2014 Current Cars, Previous Cars: We own a 2017 Macan, 2014 Cayman S, 2014 Audi A6 TDI, 2000 Audi TT What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: After I retired, Kaye and I were looking for additional regular social interactions. I always wanted a Porsche so buying the Cayman S and joining PCA was a great decision. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): Kaye and I wanted a Porsche. We visited Porsche of Silver Spring and they had a new Cayman S on the lot, and we bought our first Porsche. Truthfully, Kaye asked me to ride with her to Maple Lawn one Saturday morning. She was going to a store to pick up a purchase. As it turned out the store was Bra La La and she was picking up two bras. I was surprised! I told Kaye if I had to come to Bra La La then we are going to Porsche of Silver Spring and the rest is history. What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: There are so many events in which we participate in. Our favorite Chesapeake events are the Christmas charity drive at Porsche of Towson, the Chesapeake Challenge, and the various drives and dinner outings. As for the national events we have attended, Kaye and I have been to four Porsche Parades. We are looking forward to this year’s pa-

Morton (cont’d) rade in the Poconos. We also attended Rennsport 6 at Laguna Seca several years ago and WERKS in Amelia Island a couple of times, and to the Boardwalk Reunion in Atlantic City, NJ. Traveling to these events has been a blast. What is your favorite PCA memory: The Jay Peak parade in 2016 was our first parade. We had a great time. The venue, the group dinners, concours, and drives we participated in were first class. We were relatively new, there were many Chesapeake members in attendance (with a margarita machine). We met a lot of members from different regions, made new friends, and everyone was incredibly friendly. What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: Our advice to new members is to be active in the club. It is a happy place! Everyone loves their cars and loves to talk about anything Porsche. And you might find a few F1 fans to chat with

also. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: If money were no object, I would love to own a 911 Targa 4 GTS. I always loved to look of

Morton (cont’d) James B. Beavan III the targa, especially the side view. Being able to ride with the top open would be great. Plus, when the top is closed you have the great coupe. All Kaye wants is a Boxster S, Guards Red with black interior and a black top (Ed: Sounds like my car, Kaye has great taste!) or PWRHAUS. Anything additional you would like to share about yourself (Family/Work/ Etc): Kaye and I have been married for 30+ years. We have two daughters, Rachel, and Amanda, one son in law, Tom, and 3 granddaughters, Madeline, Addison, and Betty. Amanda is the car lover of the two. She has the TT in Canandaigua, NY where she lives. Amanda and I picked up the TT when it was new in August 1999. She was eight, it was a special day. Rachel’s family lives in Catonsville. They cannot keep air in the tires.

Eastern Shore Tour to Suicide Bridge

Aniano Aaro

Photo, above, courtesy of Suicide Bridge Restaurant To begin the 2022 driving season, PCA Chesapeake’s Tour & Rally Committee offered the “Eastern Shore Tour to the Suicide Bridge” on April 10th. Twisty back roads, lovely scenery and an interesting destination provided an enjoyable experience to 72 participants. This driving event was conceived, designed and planned by guest tour master Tom Divilio. From Cambridge, we drove our 39 Porsches on some of the most delightful and lightly traveled back roads on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. A series of twists and turns took us through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. After about 75 minutes of driving fun, we headed to the bridge in Hurlock where at least three suicides have occurred over the years. Our tour ended at the restaurant that sits next to the Suicide Bridge, which crosses Cabin Creek. The group lunch there was enjoyed by all.

PCA-CHS 2022 Tour & Rally Event No. 4 – June 5, Sunday

Just from its name, you know that this PCA Chesapeake tour is going to be very unusual. For one thing, it will be both a driving escapade and a destination event. And it will feature not just one but two distinct destinations. The first is the deactivated BA-79 Nike Missile Base in Granite, MD. The second is the joint Linganore Winecellars/Red Shedman Brewery. Limited to 30 Porsches and 60 people, this tour is certain to sell out quickly, as it did last year, so sign up ASAP. The registration window will open on May 13 and close on May 20. Three editions of the tour will be offered on the same day, with staggered start times, for Groups 1, 2 and 3. Each group will be made up of no more than 10 cars and 20 people, and will be offered a 45-minute guided tour of the Cold War era base that once held anti-aircraft nuclear missiles. This Tour & Rally Committee event will conclude with a picnic lunch at Linganore. In between, there will be delightful country roads for us to enjoy in our Porsches. This extravaganza is the brainchild of guest tour master and PCA Chesapeake President Ron Farb.

Hot Staple Plastic Repairs

Steve Wood

Have you ever been frustrated by broken plastic parts? This kind of fix can apply to any plastic parts too, not just car parts. In fact, I have been using this Hot Staple repair kit for over a decade, and have fixed such things as refrigerator drawers, kid’s toys, gardening tools, vacuum height adjustors and more. But most importantly it started with the need to repair old plastic dash parts on my late 60’s GM muscle cars. Not only is it nice to keep the original parts in the car, but much cheaper than replacing with inferior replacements. And once you’re finished, you can hardly even tell that you did the repair!

The kit comes from Eastwood, and cost around $150 (excluding extra staples in various shapes that you might need or want). There are three main types of staples that seem to cover most any job – Flat, Corner &

36

Chesapeake Region

Wave. The wave staples are the best for fixing long cracks or separations. The kit is fairly basic, and includes a transformer with 3 settings (low, medium & high) for modulating the electric. The yellow flashlight-style gun has an on/off button trigger allowing the start & stop heating of the staple. Use a lower setting at first, until you get used to how quickly the staple will burn into the plastic. The key is to melt the staple into the backside of your project, but not to burn through, or you will see it from the front side. Practice on some expendable plastic of various thicknesses till you are proficient. The key to creating a solid repair, that is barely noticeable from the front, is to 1) Apply the staple from the backside, 2) Do not burn through the entire thickness of the plastic, 3) Install enough staples along the crack (or break) to strengthen the entire piece, 4) Once all the staples are installed, take a spare staple & smooth over (by melting) the plastic around the buried staple. This will ensure the staple never backs itself out over time, 5) If needed, you can also melt the frontside (with a spare staple) in attempt to cover up the seam of the crack. Lastly, have fun with it! Tell all of your family that you can repair any of their broken plastic parts & enjoy their admiration!

Grocery Run Fun!

Rich Erlich

I checked the weather and my phone shows it’s 48 degrees out. It’s a few degrees warmer than our last few weekends, so I grab the key to my Cayman from the cabinet. Heading outside to the garage, I pull the cover off of the car and slide the key into the door to unlock the car. Carefully, I lower myself into the seat, turning to place my feet in the pedal box. Pressing the clutch in, I start the car which always seems to produce a shocking large amount of smoke. While the engine warms a bit, I do a quick check of the tires and a few touch-ups with the spray detailer, then I’m ready to go. Short shifting while the car fully warms, I make my way to the real roads. My pace soon quickens as the road unfurls in my path. Even though the radio is off, the sound of the engine behind my shoulders makes me think of the line, “Shifting and drifting, Mechanical music.” from Red Barchetta by Rush. I grouse at myself for taking a bad line in a turn, and missing a shift. The scenery becomes a blur as I focus on the mechanics of operating the controls, and watching the road for potential hazards. The voice of my navigator, the Scenic app, tells me where I need to turn. It’s a hard won skill that I don’t look at my phone, rather I rely on the voice guidance so I can focus on the road and the changing environment. The balance and performance of the suspension and brakes remind me why I love this car so much. Especially when I nailed the downshift for the turns. As this is a solo drive, I’m not suffering “turbo envy” where my Cayman can’t hope to keep up with a 911 Turbo’s acceleration on the straighter portions of the road. After some time of running through the twisty back roads, I carefully select my line for the highway onramp, and again to the off-ramp just a mile later. I complete the mundane task of parking my Cayman, letting the engine idle for a moment before I shut the car off. While the engine is idling, and I gather up my phone and wallet, I notice that I have driven 42 miles to get here. Reaching up with my left hand, I turn the car off and get out of my Cayman. I put my jacket on, and drop the key in my pocket. I walk across the parking lot and walk inside of the supermarket. A short time later, I reverse the process, starting the car for the drive home so I can get the groceries put away. The seven miles home takes about 15-minutes to drive, with the traffic and the stoplights. But, the drive to the supermarket was priceless.

Across The Atlantic: NFTs? Not for Me!

Aaron Miller

Wilkommen aus Stuttgart! Winter stubbornly refuses to leave Southern Germany which means I must keep finding things to do indoors; it’s hard to enjoy a road trip here when your Porsche gets covered in road grime on a daily basis. Instead, we decided to hang some of our newly acquired Porsche art in our flat. While the Non-Fungible Token craze has gripped the art investment world, we’ve opted for something a bit more traditional, and quite a bit more personal. For those unfamiliar with NFTs, they are digital data stored on a blockchain using the same technology as cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Since they are unique, and their certificate of authenticity is tied to the blockchain technology, trading markets have arisen where people buy-and-sell the ownership of these digital works of art. Me? I’m a bit more conventional but I still value technology. For those in the region that follow us on Instagram (@pnkpnzr968) you know I’m solely focused on automotive themes for our social media. While developing and curating our online automotive persona, I’ve come into contact with a number of graphic designers and digital artists creating fresh content and custom art for their customers and followers. After seeing so many one-off projects, I decided to reach out to some of these artists to realize some of my own automotive art desires. I started with part-time artist and full-time architect, Douglas Peterson-Hui (@thearchitectsgarage/

www.thearchitectsgarage.com) who specializes in minimalist car-centric projects mixed with interesting and notable buildings as backgrounds. I wanted to commission a project to coincide with our anniversary in early October, and I knew I wanted the subject to be Minta’s 968 cabriolet. I sent Doug a message through Instagram about my project idea and sent over some photos of Minta’s car. Doug agreed to take on the project and when I told him I wanted a “Miami Vice feel” to the project he immediately recommended the “Pink House”

Across The Atlantic (cont’d)

Aaron Miller

in Miami, FL as the background building. After a short back-and-forth while we discussed angles, colors, and themes, Doug provided an incredible piece of custom art for a surprisingly affordable price. Jumping to a European artist, I was immediately taken with the focus of graphic designer Roman Eirich (@epicrare.co/store.epicrare.co). Roman is also a minimalist using deliberate application of color bring out the subject of the image. Think a perfect Blipshift shirt image and you’ll immediately have an appreciation for Roman’s artist eye. This time, I decided to treat myself and commission a custom piece of our Martini Racing-liveried 944 Turbo. I sent Roman several photos that I liked as inspiration and he immediately replied, “The top-down perspective is a point of view which seldom can be seen and would make a nice print.” I couldn’t agree more once I saw his initial proof; he captured movement and energy in the image that was devoid in the photo inspiration. And again, for a very reasonable sum I received a custom piece of art that proudly hangs on our wall.

As much as I’ve enjoyed collecting and displaying Porsche dealership posters and other associated “marketing as art” over the years, commissioning custom artworks of our cars is both more personal and feels more exclusive. Given the ocean separating us from our classic Porsches, it’s a way for us to feel connected to our other Porsches while we wait for opportunities to drive them again. I think I’ll pass on the NFT craze and keep looking for artists to engage to make real works of art.

Ceramic Brakes Pedro P. Bonilla

We’ve all heard about ceramic brakes, but what exactly is ceramic and why are they so expensive? Are they really worth the price? Are they really that much better? We’ll try to answer each one of these questions that people always wonder about. Generally when people talk about ceramic brakes they are referring to ceramic brake pads. I make the notation because there are also ceramic rotors (discs) both of which we’ll look at I detail. Ceramic Brake Pads Ceramic brake pads are manufactured from material very similar to the one use when making pottery and plates. The material used for the brakes is much denser and durable buy it also incorporates fine copper fibers mixed in with the material. These fibers help to increase friction (better braking) and also increase heat conductivity (cooler brakes). Ceramic brake pads were developed in the 1980s and have been increasing in popularity ever since their introduction. Compared to standard brake pads, ceramic pads are much quieter, giving off very little sound when the brakes are applied. They are also quite clean, meaning that there is much less brake dust and they also work better in a wider range of climatic conditions than standard pads. They are more expensive than the metallic or asbestos-type pads and much less conductive than metallic pads allowing for heat to be transferred into the rest of the braking system.

44

Chesapeake Region

Ceramic Brakes (cont’d) Pedro P. Bonilla

Ceramic pads are not recommended for extreme cold weather and they’re intended to be used with standard cast iron rotors. Ceramic is very heat-resistant, up to 1,000C̊ (1,832F̊), therefore ceramic composite brake discs last up to 60 times longer than standard cast iron discs. Ceramic composite means that the ceramic material, silicone, is combined with carbon fibers for strength. In Porsche-speak they are called PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes). The extremely complex manufacturing process begins by mixing a heat-moldable resin powder with finely chopped pieces of raw carbon fiber. This mixture is poured into an aluminum mold with the shape of the disc brake, filling it half way. Aluminum spikes (cores) are then fitted through the disc. These will form the ventilation channel once removed after the molding is completed. The mold gets another pour of the composite to fill it completely. Once filled, the mold gets a lid while it moves into a press that will put 20,000 Kg (45,000 lb) of pressure while heating the mold and its contents to 200C̊ (392F̊). This compacts the carbon fiber and transforms the resin powder into plastic. Then it’s time to cool down. Once the mold is completely cool it is opened and the disc is extracted. A computer-guided laser corrects any rough areas and makes ventilation holes on the disc (equivalent to cross drilling in cast iron discs). Now the disc goes back into an oven that gradually, throughout the course of two days, heats it to 1,000C̊ (1,832F̊). This produces a chemical change that transforms the plastic into carbon. The disc then goes into a crucible (high heat resistant container). It is suspended from the bottom of the crucible by five mounts. A ceramic material (fine silicone powder) is poured into the center opening of the disc. The crucible and its contents then moves into another oven which gradually raises the temperature to 1,700C̊ (3,092F̊) throughout 24 hours. This melts the silicone. Then it applies a low suction that draws the now melted silicone into the disc ring. This creates an extremely hard, new material, called

45

Chesapeake Region

Ceramic Brakes (cont’d) Pedro P. Bonilla

silicone carbide. Once cooled, another laserguided machine bores the mounting holes. The disc then gets submerged into a special protective paint that shields the carbon from contacting oxygen (anti-oxidation treatment) which significantly extends the life of the brake disc. The paint is dried in an oven then the disc is cleaned and polished. Finally a computer carefully inspects the disc taking thousands of micron-level photos which are analyzed for imperfections. The last step is affixing the bell, the centerpiece that mounts to the wheel carrier. The bell is made from aluminum or steel and is bolted onto the disc via the mounting holes previously bored into it. Because of their better stopping power and longer life than cast-iron rotors, Porsche had initially recommended PCCBs for track use. When first introduced, we were told that the high price ($9,000 option on the Carrera S) was justifiable because the discs would virtually last for the life of the car, but people would wear them out after a few hard track days. What happened is that ceramic discs can degrade if you’re hard on the brakes in a track environment which allows for very little cool down time. So now, the consensus is that ceramic brakes are simply too expensive to replace when they wear out so most track junkies who had opted for PCCBs have replaced the discs with cast-iron discs. So, what then are ceramic brakes good for? They are perfect for people who don’t like cleaning their wheels. PCCBs drastically reduce the build-up of break dust. PCCB discs weigh 50% of their cast-iron counterparts, so there is a great reduction of unsprung weight. They also look very cool and if not tracked, should last the life of the car. www.PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

PCA-CHS 2022 Tour & Rally Event No. 3 – May 7th, Saturday

(Version 3. Photo by Aniano Arao) PCA Chesapeake’s Tour & Rally Committee is pleased to offer its second Eastern Shore tour this year, before the summer crowds flock to the beaches. But this time we will not simply stay within Maryland. We will head to coastal Delaware, where we will have lunch at one of the many wonderful restaurants in the Rehoboth Beach area. This Delmarva Tour will start east of the Bay Bridge and proceed on a scenic route made up mostly of enjoyable back roads that most visitors to the tristate peninsula do not use or know. The group lunch, as usual, will be optional. Afterwards, attendees will be on their own. They could head to the BEACHES in Rehoboth, Lewes, Dewey, Bethany or Ocean City. Or go SHOPPING in the charming downtown areas of these various resort towns. Or proceed to Rehoboth’s Tanger OUTLETS. Remember, there is no sales tax in Delaware. PCA Juniors

What is the PCA Juniors program? ✓ PCA Juniors is a program for Porsche enthusiasts under

age 18. ✓ Participants must be registered by an active PCA mem-

ber. ✓ It’s not just the cars… and now it’s not just the grown-

ups! ✓ With our new PCA Juniors program, PCA is about the kids too!

The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America. Who is eligible? Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program.

(Note: This is not a PCA Membership.) What will the child receive? PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an ageappropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time. What does it cost to register? It’s FREE! Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join!
