THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN We all hope the country and the world can bring the coronavirus under control in 2021. It’s still with us, but I am not going to dwell on it here. What I will dwell on is that the Club has a full slate of drives that take all of the precautions ROD HERSBERGER mandated by PCA and common sense. You can find information about these events in this issue and always at pcasb.org. You can also check Facebook and Instagram for information. We are finding that these drives sell out very quickly, so be alert if you are interested. Our Cars & Coffee format has proven popular. We will continue with that successful format rather than sit-down breakfasts until the Board decides it is safe and desirable. All auto manufacturers, including Porsche, seem to be
rushing into electric powered vehicles. The mandate to do so may be stronger in some West European nations than it is here. Porsche seems to have done only modestly with allelectric and hybrid cars in spite of the success of the high performance 918 and 919 in showcasing that technology. We visited Zuffenhausen in the spring of 2018 and our factory tour guide pointed out the construction of a new production facility devoted to electric vehicle production. I suppose we all have our definition and prejudices about what a “real” Porsche should be. For some, of course, it must be rear engine and air-cooled. For others it must only have a manual transmission. Most of the great Porsche race cars have been mid-engine, so that is the layout of choice for others. Even though electric powered cars may well outperform gas and hybrids, I just don’t know where the visceral feel comes in with electric cars, but I do look for there to be one. Still, we hope Porsche maintains its unique status as a marque of style and performance and continues to bring us together as a drivers’ fraternity. Stay well and enjoy driving your Porsche. FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
DENNIS POWER
to know a lot of you, or at least learning more about what you do with your car or camera. To even the score it might be good to write something about my trajectory with Porsches. And I know it’s bad form to write about yourself—it won’t happen again.
Being editor for a group like this is perfect at my moment in history. It’s not unlike certain paths in my own life: one path with work, the other with cars. Professionally, I started with basic research and writing the results for scholarly journals (and the dozen or so people in the world who were interested). Having time to be creative and productive in this way eventually gave in to duties that come with creating a family and expectations by boards of trustees—my employers. Increasing administrative work at the start (the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Museum) left time only for editing other’s writing and assembling same for publication. Later, at another museum, and finally at an art and design college, whatever creativity with the written word was for things like strategic plans and proposals aimed at securing support from foundations, corporations, and individuals for the “public benefit, nonprofit corporation” that advanced our work and provided jobs for my curators and instructors. There was a path as well with Porsches. A couple of decades ago my daily driver was a 2001 Boxster S. I first put it on the tarmac with autocrosses at an abandoned military airfield in Orange County, courtesy of the Orange Coast Region of PCA. Rapid tire wear quickly became a new reality. Later, a venture to Streets of Willow for Driver Education events opened a new world: the track was where
to take these cars! Next were Time Trials put on by the San Diego and Golden Gate regions. Going faster now meant practice, yes, but also spending more money on your car: suspension, exhaust, racing seats, five-point harness. Blow the engine and why not replace the stock 3.2 liter motor with a 3.4 from a race shop? Okay, do reasonably well with that and the next step is Club Racing. Stress levels (and costs) are much higher here, and to do better means even more alterations to the car, so much so that it is no longer street legal and a trailer is needed to get to and from the track. The car is now stripped of excess weight, carries a wing and roll cage, rolls on Hoosiers, and is loud. Hitting all the regional tracks was a fantastic experience: Willow Springs, Buttonwillow, Auto Club Speedway, Chuckwalla, Laguna Seca, Spring Mountain, and Thunder Hill. Then, driving back from a distant track in northern California after not doing so hot and having to buy new tires for the tow vehicle to make it back home, it hits: I’m not having that much fun anymore. The top of this path is reached. The car and trailer are sold. Next was a 2014 Cayman S: gorgeous car; manual transmission, sport chrono package, the works. There was a 2008 Cayenne S—the tow vehicle and for travel. All gone. And now I enjoy a 1981 911 SC and a 2017 Macan GTS. The move back home to Santa Barbara was ten years ago. PCA/SBR brought me in contact with great people and shared interests. First it was the socialization, as well as being around Porsche cars of every generation. A couple of years later, doing the activity flyers for the magazine put me closer to still more people in the group. And now, as editor, I get to put together the writing and photography of others to help us see what one another is doing and to get out the word on creative events, drives, and occasions to get together. When the end of one path comes closer another opportunity, another door, opens. People have said, “thanks for taking this on.” I say, “thanks for letting me.”

AIR COOL
THE PORSCHE COLLECTION OF ANGEL MARTINEZ Story and photos by Dennis Power
M
embers of the Santa Barbara Region of PCA are fortunate to associate with people who have interesting life histories and superb cars. I want to occasionally feature in these pages some of those stories. This seemed especially timely given the impact on getting together last year owing to the pandemic. One member who came to mind is someone I know: Angel Martinez, a member continuously since 1993. Here is what I found.
10
DE R
This is one of those success stories we have come to respect. Angel was born in Cuba, moved to the Bronx at the age of three, and grew up with his grandmother’s sister and her husband. They relocated to California when he was a boy. He still remembers the impact of seeing a Volkswagen in the Bronx when age 10. A fascination with Porsches came later. It originated at the age of 12 in California with a 1957 maroon 356. Taken with the look, he asked, “What is that?” “A Porsche,” came the reply. “What’s a Porsche?” he asked. “Well, it’s a sports car?” he was told. “What’s a sports car?” came the next question. And with that Angel was offered a ride: “I was mesmerized; it was so fast, it was the coolest experience I ever had!” Later, in high school, and not afraid to get his hands dirty and see how things work, Angel earned credits for rebuilding VW motors at his high school’s auto shop.

The aspiration to own the best of Porsche’s air-cooled cars was set. What allowed Angel to acquire the cars he’s owned over the years, and that are in his collection now, was helped by his hard work and wise decisions in business. As a high school runner he developed an interest in the sport. After graduating as an All American in Cross Country and Track from UC Davis he opened a running shoe store. Opportunity knocked as he met two entrepreneurs who were trying to launch an unknown running brand in the U.S. named Reebok. Angel became the third employee and one of the founders. Over two decades later, after retiring from Reebok and moving to Santa Barbara with his family, Angel launched Keen Footwear, followed by an offer to become CEO of Deckers Outdoor, known today as Deckers Brands.
Beach. He persuaded a group from his 356 club, Typ356NE, to drive across the country, with the rule that they could clean only the windshield, nothing else. The only breakdown was a failed generator on one of the cars, which was fixed with a replacement part found in Kansas City. They rest performed flawlessly. They arrived in Monterey with bugs and dirt on all, along with pride and great stories to tell. (Continued on page 12)

What he calls his “car disease” started with 356s. In 1977 Angel bought his first Porsche, a 1963 356 B. His second car was just as stylish: a 1965 sunroof SC, a barn find. “Engineering works of art” are how he characterized the 356s: the quality and the feel of the cars were part of what he valued about every Porsche he drove or owned. The early Porsches were supposed to be affordable, but the company didn’t compromise on quality. One of the ventures he recalls was in 2004, attending the 50th anniversary celebration of the Speedster in Pebble

During my interview I mentioned that I’ve known art collectors who appreciate most their whole collection, whether it represents a genre or historic period, more so than the individual works of art by themselves. I asked, “When you look at or think about the entirety of what you have, do you get a feeling about the collection, the value to you of the whole, or are you equally passionate about each specific car?” His answer is what you might expect from someone deeply involved in buying, restoring, driving, and taking care of these air-cooled gems: “Each car is so unique and the driving character so different that I value each one on its own; I value most the car I’m driving that day.”

Angel takes his cars on PCA drives, to Cars & Coffees, and occasionally to the track. That’s what they are made for. “concours are not my thing—driving is,” he said. The collection gets some new additions from time to time. He added, “I don’t seek out the cars; they seem to come my way.” The latest under restoration is a 240,000-mile 1973 911 S long hood found in Solvang. We look forward to seeing the finished product as well as any of the examples in this superb collection of aircooled Porsches.

ne of the most stunning locales in the Santa Monica Mountains, the 588-acre King Gillette Ranch offers a rare, unspoiled view of California’s rich archaeological, cultural, and historic resources, including a Chumash settlement. Wallace Neff, an architect of California’s Golden Age, designed the nationally significant structures for razor magnate King C. Gillette in the 1920’s. Now owned by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, the park features some of the original formal landscaping on the estate, including a grand entry, a serene pond, sweeping lawns, bridges, and the Spanish Colonial Revival style mansion with a formal courtyard and terrace. Our morning starts at The Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard with a guided tour by Executive Director David Neel. The mission of the museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the history and heritage of the American automobile, including offering education programs on the role of the automobile in the tri-county area.
From the museum, we will have a relaxing and beautiful drive along the Pacific Ocean on Hwy 1 and head into Malibu before turning inland to the King Gillette Ranch for a highlighted tour of the grounds and structures of the Ranch. There are outdoor accommodations for seating, so be sure to pack a lunch and beverage! Please note that no dogs are allowed at the Ranch. From the dawn of time to today’s confinement due to a

pandemic, mysteries have played a critical role in our lives. Everyone loves one: right? SBR took it upon itself to prove that proposition. On the morning of October 17, 2020, twenty-nine spectacular Porsches of all colors and heritage pulled into a parking lot in Camarillo ready to take part in an event promoted as The Magical Mystery Tour. The fifty-three humans arriving with the Carreras, turbos, cabriolets, SUVs, etc. had hunger in their eyes, ready for something more pleasurable and invigorating than reading or watching the latest news about COVID-19. They were ready to go, and they were not disappointed. Until about five days before the event, no one knew where, how, or when The Magical Mystery Tour would take place; they just knew to hold the date. A review of the document that was sent disclosed the route, and it was exciting. Starting in Camarillo and ending in Santa

Barbara County, the two-and-one-half hours of following directions, making turns, climbing hills, and descending into valleys, the mystery became public. Many participants were on their first SBR touring drive, and, boy, are they now hooked! The group travelled along numerous roads, avenues, and streets that crisscross our local agricultural districts, while at the same time conquering canyon roads that required the intense concentration of drivers and nerves of steel for the passengers. For many, Grimes and Balcom canyons provided thrills, while flower growers graced us with splashes of colors appealing to nature lovers and, indeed, to all of us. The adventure ended around 12:30 p.m. at the junction of CA Hwy 150 and U.S. Hwy 101 in Carpinteria. The lust for more driving Photo: Leslie Power adventures was self-evident. The next one is set for January 16 when we will have our always popular Porsche Poker Run.

CARRERA IN THE ROUGH AN OFF-ROAD TREK IN A 1999 996 Story and photos by Nicholas Jacobs

couple months into the wake of the pandemic, which we all know so well, I felt a need to get out of town, just me, where I could be remote, have no contact with anyone but myself, and make no stops, save for petrol. I decided on the areas outside of Death Valley, the Trona Pinnacles and Ballarat Ghost Town. Next, it was to decide on my vehicle. Do I take my trusty ol’ pick-up, my capable adventure motorcycle, or go in comfort and style with my 1999 Carrera? The answer? The Porsche! I loaded it up with overlanding equipment you may typically imagine: shovel, pick axe, two spare wheels, tire inflator, patch kit, flares, first aid kit, towrope, and the list goes on. Prepped with all the water, food, and hand sanitizer I would need for a three-day adventure, I was ready. Getting to the Trona Pinnacles via a five-mile dirt road turned my “clean” track-specked 996 into a puddle-loving,

sand-plowing mud queen. I had an ear-to-ear grin the entire time. Heading to Ballarat Ghost Town the next day was similar— fewer puddles though. When I rolled up past Ballarat Trading Post I saw a few trucks parked with a couple of families having refreshments in the beds of the trucks. A few jaws dropped as I rolled by. I moved on past them and enjoyed my lunch, gazing into the mountains of Death Valley. I soon heard footsteps approaching. Thinking to myself, okay, those dropped jaws may have been due to the sight of my car and here they come to inquire. “What’s a Porsche doing in Ballarat?” a woman asked. “Same thing you’re likely doing here: taking a break from quarantine, enjoying solitude in the adventures of nature rather than our homes.” We chatted for a bit exchanging the stories of our travels and said farewell. All in all, I clocked about 30 miles off road on my low 996 with the sole issue being a loose screw on the rear license plate. The great technical driving, adventure, and reward of such a trip has led me to do a few since. The Alabama Hills, the Carrizo Plain, and Bodie Ghost Town have been some great trips since my initial adventure, and there will be more in the future. I couldn’t recommend more doing one of you own. And, if you’d like to follow my adventures check out #haveporschecando

We’ll meet at 8:30 a.m. and depart at 9:00 for a cruise down PCH and then navigate over the Santa Monica Mountains to the car museum in Thousand Oaks, arriving about 10:30.
A catered, ribs and chicken barbeque lunch is being planned, but we won’t know until closer to the time if pandemic rules allow this. Pacific Surfliner: “Ghost Train” {Photo and Story by Ron Williams
A member of PCA/SBR since 2006, the author drives a gray 2006 Boxster. He’s also a serious photographer. We recently discovered that he’s won a few prizes, including Honorable Mention in the 2020 Westways Magazine contest. If you’ve seen the report on the competititon you’ll know he’s in impressive company. While this is not an article about Porsches, we think this achievement is worth sharing with our members. —Editor

he “Pacific Surfliner” that garnered a Westways honorable mention was five years in the making. It started when I was driving on 101 along the Gaviota Coast and saw Amtrak trains running at about the same speed as road traffic. I started “stalking” them to see if I could get a shot. At first it was a lot of effort with no meaningful results. Then, as I was photographing a sunset from the vista point turnout at Arroyo Hondo, I got one that was good enough to motivate me to try again. I had noted the time and returned to that site a number of times, often with a “no show” by the train. Finally, I got a shot I entered in the Channel City Camera Club’s (CCCC) exhibition night. It received positive comments and high scores. I was now hooked. With frequent train delays, I wasted a lot of time driving up and down 101, so I decided to try shooting trains in “captivity,” not in the “wild”—making photos at the Santa Barbara Amtrak station. I had a time table and would drive a short distance there and ask the agent if the train was on time. If so, I would set up my tripod at a less busy location

and get several shots as the train arrived and departed. That allowed me to refine my technique. I found a promising location about four miles northwest of the train station and could optimize the ambient lighting with the train’s arrival (the best month is February). The trains roaring by at 60+ mph meant I could get only one shot, but I would return again and again. It was exciting to experience the earth-shaking rumble and wind vortices while trying to capture the image. One of the photos that I called “Ghost Train” garnered a CCCC “Image of the Year” award and I sold one online. I learned you start around sunset and use a 10 second exposure with the f/stop and ISO set accordingly. A neutral density filters helps if there is too much light. The exposure time will vary according to the speed of the train. The winning photo was taken with my Nikon D850, 10 seconds at f/11. It takes practice and patience—just like driving a Porsche well! I received compliments from the Westways editor and am happy to have won honorable mention.
Whether it’s about Porsches or your next dream home, let’s talk!
