VACATION Tips

STAY ACTIVE WITH BEACH GAMES

Make a day at the beach even more fun by bringing a football, frisbee, kite, or even a game of cornhole. Bring a volleyball to start up your own game at one of the many existing volleyball nets on the beach.

PACK LIGHT

Most condos are stocked with towels, toilet paper, kitchen accessories, cleaning supplies, and more. Once you arrive, simply make your way to the nearest grocery store and stock up for a week at the beach.

BRING A PORTABLE COOLER & MUSIC PLAYER

Music, drinks, and food make your beach trip 10x's better. A couple of rules to remember when you pack—no glass on the beach, and no alcohol on the beach during the month of March.

FREEZE YOUR BEACH DRINKS

Freeze water bottles instead of bringing ice packs to keep your snacks cold and fresh. Your water will stay chilled for hours and your snacks will stay cool and crisp. For the kids, you can bring along frozen Capri Suns. Let them thaw for a bit until they are like a slushy.

PLAN FOR A NON-BEACH DAY

Be sure to plan for an indoor day of activities during your trip so you can experience all of the fun attractions we have to offer besides our beautiful beach. Visit our "what to do" section on page 48.

WALK ON THE PIER

There are two beautifully constructed piers in Panama City Beach—the M.B. Miller (County) Pier, and the Russell-Fields (City) Pier in front of Pier Park—where you can go out further on the Gulf waters and watch fishermen bring in their catch. A third pier is located at St. Andrews State Park.

GET FRIENDLY WITH THE LOCALS

Just like a guide, locals are likely to know a lot about the area and what’s worth doing. With some vacation spots, you might be able to find the typical tourist places, but locals might have suggestions of their own on what is really worthwhile.

SCHEDULE A DATE NIGHT WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Family vacations are great, but be sure you and your special someone take advantage of one of our beach’s many top-notch restaurants. Plan to stick around for live music and dancing, or walk down by the shore for a romantic sunset. Head over to page 40 to find gulf-front, fine dining, and casual dining options.

PLAN A FISHING TRIP OR STOP BY SHELL ISLAND

If you’re booking a sailing tour or a day-cruise with your family, consider one of the early morning boat trips to beat the heat and the crowds!

LOCAL Secrets

1. Get to the beach early for the best place to lay out on the sand and for a preferred parking spot.

2. Go to the Summer Concert Series, held weekly in June-August at Aaron Bessant Park. Be sure to bring a cooler full of drinks and snacks and a blanket or a lawn chair.

3. "Back Beach" is both PCB Parkway and Highway 98, and "Middle Beach" is Hutchison Boulevard.

4. Take a boat ride out to Shell Island. Read all about Shell Island on page 51.

5. Cruise Front Beach Road for the scenery. Cruise Back Beach Road (Highway 98/PCB Parkway) for faster travel time.

6. We prefer the comfort and convenience of beach chairs instead of towels.

7. Wear sunscreen. We promise you won't miss out on a bronze glow —you'll thank us later.

8. You can still enjoy perfect beach weather in the fall.

9. Visit Historic St. Andrews over the bridge in Panama City.

In Panama City Beach, color-coded flags are in place to make the public aware of the condition of the waters at all times. You can find them approximately one mile apart along the beach. For your safety, it is crucial that you follow these flag warnings and watch them at all times, as the conditions are constantly changing. The Leave Only Footprints ordinance is a year-round regulation in Panama City Beach that exists to protect our pristine beaches and natural wildlife, such as nesting turtles. The ordinance states that any

RIP CURRENTS

Rip currents are strong, localized rivers of water that usually flow away from the beach at a surprisingly high velocity. They are extremely unpredictable, dangerous, and sometimes deadly. Although they are typically associated with large waves and strong offshore winds, they can occasionally occur during calm conditions. For your safety, please stay informed of the signs and helpful safety tips regarding rip currents below:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Although signs of a rip current may not be visible sometimes, please be aware that a rip current may be occurring if you see unusual choppiness, discoloration, and/or debris and foam moving seaward in the water.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE IS CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT

If you or someone else is caught in a rip current, the most important thing to remember is not to panic. Swim parallel to the shore until the current weakens, then swim back to the shore.

If someone else is caught in a rip current, do not enter the water to save them, as you will risk being caught in the current yourself. Keep your eye on the victim at all times and have someone nearby dial 9-1-1, or locate a lifeguard if you are located by the City/County piers. You may also throw a flotation device to the victim if possible.

HOW TO ESCAPE A RIP CURRENT

IMPORTANT Regulations

1. Glass bottles are not allowed on the beach.

2. Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited on the sandy beaches during the month of March.

3. No water entry is allowed when beach flags are Double Red.

4. It is unlawful to remove sand from the beach.

5. Dogs are not allowed on the beach, with the exception of our pet-friendly area located on the west side of the Russell-Fields Pier across from Pier Park.

6. It is illegal to feed or harass wild dolphins.

7. Camping or sleeping overnight on the beach is prohibited.

8. No fires are allowed on the beach unless you have a valid permit from the City Fire Department.

9. Tents and any other personal property left unattended on the beach between 7 pm and 7 am are subject to be removed by the

authorized beach services contractor under the Leave No Trace Ordinance.

10. Sea turtles are protected by the US Endangered Species Act and federal and state law. Substantial fines and federal imprisonment may result from killing, harming, or even interfering with a sea turtle. It is also illegal to disturb the nest of a sea turtle. Heavy fines and possible imprisonment may result.

11. A fishing license is required to fish in Panama City Beach unless you are fishing from a licensed fishing pier or charter boat operated by a licensed captain. For locations on where to purchase a license, call the Beach Chamber at (850) 235-1159.

12. Do not walk or play on the dunes or beach vegetation at any time. Dunes are built slowly over hundreds of years; however, they are very fragile. They are our primary defense against hurricane damage and are a shelter for beach wildlife.

13. It is illegal to pick sea oats in Florida. Sea oats play a vital role in anchoring the dunes.

PANAMA CITY BEACH PIER FISHING

Located on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico in Panama City Beach and open year-round, the M.B. Miller County Pier and Russell-Fields City Pier both sit 1,500 feet out into the Gulf of Mexico. The structures beneath the water that hold up the piers attract a range of prized inshore fish, so no matter where you set up for the day, there’s something for you. Fish caught in season include Cobia, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Redfish, Blues, Blue liners, Pompano, Flounder, and Hardtails, amongst many more varieties.

Daily fishing licenses can be purchased for $6 for the M.B. Miller County Pier or $7 at Russell-Fields Pier. Rod rentals, bait, and tackle are also available on site. If you prefer to ditch the rods and come as a spectator, you can also walk the piers for a daily fee of $3 at M.B. Miller and $4 at Russell-Fields. Children 6 years of age and younger are free, and seasonal or annual passes are also available.

FISHING AT ST ANDREWS STATE PARK

St. Andrews State Park also offers two fishing piers. The St. Andrews State Park Pier on the Gulf side and the other pier located on the Grand Lagoon. A concession offers snacks, souvenirs, bait, limited grocery items, and seasonal rental of chairs, umbrellas, snorkeling gear, canoes, and kayaks. There is no charge for fishing or walking these piers, however, there is a fee to enter the park per vessel.

St. Andrews State Park is also where you can go to hit the rocks and beaches if jetty fishing is more your thing. The jetty rocks provide

excellent vantage points year-round, and catches include Spanish Mackerel, Redfish, Flounder, Sea Trout, Bonito, Cobia, and Bluefish. All fishing within the park must conform to regulations concerning size, number, method of capture, and season. A Florida saltwater fishing license is also required.

FISHING CHARTERS

If you want to get the most out of Panama City Beach’s incredible fishing opportunities, then a fishing charter is the best option for you!

Private charter boats have more options, catering to the type of fishing you prefer, whether it be bottom fishing or trolling for Amberjacks, Mackerel, Tuna, and Wahoo. The length of the trip is up to you. Keep in mind that the longer the trip, the farther out they can go, so the deeper the water and the larger the fish. Surrounded by the vast Gulf of Mexico, bays, wrecks, springs, and more, Bay County is truly a unique diving spot. With a wide variety of areas to explore, the opportunities are bountiful to have an adventure you won't forget.

Artificial reefs and historic wrecks in the area, such as the 185foot Black Bart, the 441-foot World War II Liberty Ship, and the 465-foot Empire Mica, are the reason why Skin Diver Magazine calls Panama City Beach the "Wreck Diving Capital of the South."

In addition to sunken ships, new artificial reefs are continuously added to promote marine life. Some of these artificial reefs include a hovercraft, fighter jets, 15 160-foot long and 35-foot high bridge spans, 10 barges, specifically designed artificial reefs, and more.

Speaking of marine life, when diving in Panama City Beach, you will encounter a wide variety of underwater creatures, including: sea turtles, manta rays, grouper, bottlenose dolphins, and tiger sharks— just to name a few.

Bay County has dive charters year-round and numerous dive shops in the area. Whether you are a skilled spearfisherman or a beginner whose greatest underwater excursion is snorkeling, these businesses offer training, certification, and any equipment you may need. Not one for deepwater diving? Head over to the Jetties in St. Andrew's State Park and find colorful fish, algae, dolphins, and more—but remember to always bring your dive flag because the Jetties' waterway is very busy. There are also plenty of natural reefs located just a few miles from shore. Natural reefs typically range from only 80–100 feet deep and offer the perfect environment for an abundance of sea life.

Approximately 30 to 40 miles away, there are beautiful springs to explore, offering cave and tec diving, and places for beginners to practice skillset. The crystal-clear waters are truly a sight to see.

At least 90% of vacationers visit the shopping destination. Pier Park boasts more than 1 million square feet of open-air lifestyle shopping and features more than 120 stores. Bay County has a lot to offer when it comes to the outdoors, and we are more than just beautiful white sand and emerald green water. Our destination is the perfect turf for the adventureseeking, nature-loving, backpacking, wanderers.

For the exploring individuals or families, the perfect moments spent on vacation are those out and about enjoying nature and adventure. Luckily for you, natural beauty is integral to the story of Bay County. The word "beach" immediately conjures up images of the white sandy shoreline where you might see seagulls or snowy plovers searching for snacks at the water's edge, or dolphins chasing schools of fish just offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Panama City Beach is also bordered by St. Andrews Bay and West Bay, which are great for fishing, boating, and stand-up paddleboarding, as well as a diverse ecosystem that should be explored and protected. Likewise, lakes such as Lake Powell and Deer Point Lake in Bay County are both scenic backdrops with their own unique ecosystems.

ST. ANDREWS STATE PARK

Many nature lovers will tell you that St. Andrews State Park should be your first stop. As one of Florida's most treasured state parks, it is home to a mile and a half of natural beach along the Gulf of Mexico, soaring sand dunes, a variety of wildlife, and excellent snorkeling and diving beside the jetties. There is also great hiking throughout the park's trails, where you might spot deer among the pine trees or an alligator at Gator Lake. You can also rent a bicycle, picnic in the shade, or take a shuttle to Shell Island, a 6-mile uninhabited island that is one of Florida's greatest natural resources.

CAMP HELEN STATE PARK

Far less visited, but just as beautiful is Camp Helen State Park. Things here seem to happen at a slower pace—if you settle into one of the rocking chairs on the deck of the log cabin lodge, it may be a while before you get up again. The Spanish moss that hangs from ponderous oak trees and the hiking trails that wind through sand dunes and along beautiful Lake Powell (one of only a few coastal dune lakes in the world) will take you through several distinct forest ecosystems. Take the half-mile hike that leads you across a small bridge and down to the beach to enjoy a low populated, big stretch of beautiful beach to yourself. Need to get out of the sun for a while? Don't miss the Panama City Beach Conservation Park. This 3,000-acre conservation area offers shade and a chance to explore trails that will take you to boardwalks crossing shady cypress ponds or twisting and turning through pine forests. The park is excellent for off-road bicycling, hiking, leisurely strolls, and picnics. Paved bike trails (part of the Gayle's Trails network) also connect to the park, providing dozens of miles of protected cycling. Other off-the-beaten-path options are the backwater creeks and marshes along the intracoastal waterway and West Bay, about five miles north of Panama City Beach. Shallow-water fishermen love this area, as do those who venture out on an airboat ride for a tailored eco/adventure tour.

There's so much of natural Florida to see in Bay County, and this is just the start. So, happy trails, whether that trail leads through the pine forest, along the beach, or by the bay.

Whether you’re an avid runner, swimmer, baseball player, or cheerleader, Bay County is home to numerous tournaments, races, and competitions throughout the year. Being located right on the Gulf Coast, our area is the perfect destination to host a variety of sporting events where athletes and their families can also enjoy the beautiful beach weather.

On average, Panama City Beach has 320 days of sunshine per year, with temperatures usually ranging from the mid-60s to the high-90s. Thanks to that outstanding forecast, residents and visitors have flocked here due to their love of the great outdoors. From the natural blessing of the beach, to the great sports facilities, there are numerous ways to enjoy an active lifestyle.

FRANK BROWN PARK

There aren’t many other places in Florida or the southeast that can offer the amenities of Bay County's sports and recreation facilities. Over 200 acres are dedicated to outdoor recreation facilities at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach. Boasting soccer and football fields, tennis courts, softball and baseball diamonds, a 1.25 mile jogging track, volleyball, and more, Frank Brown Park hosts many of the sporting events that occur here. The playgrounds, picnic areas, saltwater fishing pier, freshwater youth fishing lake, greenways, and trails are open to the public year-round. Frank Brown Park is also home to the Panama City Beach Aquatic Center that features a state-of-the-art, Olympicsized swimming pool, diving well, and a 5,000 square-foot splash park and kids pool.

PANAMA CITY BEACH PUBLIX SPORTS PARK

The Panama City Beach Publix Sports Park is located within the Breakfast Point development and is the premier destination for travel sports tourism in the Florida panhandle. The facility features 13 rectangular fields, including nine with artificial surfaces and two championship fields with seating for up to 1,500 spectators. The flexible design allows for soccer, lacrosse, rugby, football and flag football, as well as baseball and softball to be played. The Panama City Beach Sports Complex is a facility managed by Sports Facilities Management, LLC.

Avacation to Panama City Beach would not be complete without a trip over to Shell Island, a sevenmile-long undeveloped barrier that's positioned right between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrews Bay.

The island is divided and protected between the ownership of St. Andrews State Park and Tyndall Air Force Base, and, although it has an island appearance, it is technically a peninsula.

With no distractions such as vendors, restrooms, or shelters, you can truly soak in the raw beauty of the island. Not to mention, you will be running on Island Time, where your worries will float away as you escape the hustle of everyday life.

Whether you are going for a full day or a few hours, be sure to go prepared with plenty of snacks, water, sun protection, floats, and a camera to capture the sites you will encounter. It is the perfect home for deer, nesting shorebirds, and all

manner of coastal creatures, including ghost crabs and endangered species such as Choctawhatchee beach mice, piping plovers, snowy plovers, loggerheads, and green sea turtles.

Just a short boat ride away, you can access the island by a pontoon, jet-ski rental or by one of our many tour boats that shuttle passengers to Shell Island. During the peak of the summer season, shuttles run seven days a week; however, off-season schedules vary, so be sure to call ahead and check.

Why one homeowner looked to Vacasa for truly local vacation rental management

Jennifer P. and her husband David wanted to kickstart their dream of retiring to the Emerald Coast by investing in a vacation rental.

“There were a lot of things I was nervous about when we bought our condo. We don’t live in Florida, and we don’t know local vacation rental requirements. “For example: We needed a new dryer, and Hailey got right on it. She sent us the estimates and took care of coordinating the installation. The only decision we had to make was picking the brand.”

But managing with Vacasa also means that vacationing at her home is better, too.

“When I compare our home with what we’ve seen, I think our rental feels more welcoming. Vacasa does a good job of providing the basics: There’s always hand soap, shampoo, paper towels, and lots of beach towels. It’s like a hotel,” she says.

“It’s a great feeling when you arrive at your home and everything’s all ready to go. I’ve never been disappointed.”

The combined collection of over 320,000 books, DVD movies, audiobooks, and more, is accessible to anyone with an NWRLS library card. Located in Panama City off of 23rd Street, HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital is certified in Advanced Primary Stroke Care, accredited as a Comprehensive Breast Care Center, and is the area's only Accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI and Resuscitation. The hospital offers a variety of services, including women’s & children’s services, orthopedic care and joint replacement, robotic surgery, cardiac & vascular procedures, and neurosurgery. HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital completed another phase of its multi-faceted investment plan in expanding healthcare services to Bay County and the surrounding area. This $24 million expansion project will add over 13,000 square feet of new space to the main facility and add an additional 6,000 square feet to the hospital's diagnostic and rehabilitation center was completed in July 2023.

This expansion included the addition of a new wound care and hyperbaric building with nine total exam rooms and four hyperbaric chambers, completed in September 2021. The project also included the addition of a cardiovascular procedural suite and one operating suite and the expansion of the diagnostic and rehabilitation center, which includes the pre-admission testing center and a separate space for the lab.

At the completion of these projects, HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital has grown to a 282-bed acute care hospital, with 12 operating suites and three cardiac cath labs, supported by 1,180 colleagues and more than 600 physicians who serve individuals and families in multiple counties.

Bay County is home to Naval Support Activity Panama City, Tyndall Air Force Base, and U.S. Coast Guard Station Panama City. Eglin Air Force Base, the largest base in the U.S. Air Force, and other naval and aviation-related installations nearby create one of the nation’s largest military base footprints. Bay County’s military bases also serve as a catalyst for attracting a strong cluster of research activity, defense contractors, and aviation and aerospace-related companies and supplies. Nearly all of the 60 nationally-recognized defense contractors have a presence in Bay County.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE

Tyndall Air Force Base is home to the 325th Fighter Wing. Tyndall’s Airmen are a team of professionals whose primary mission is to “train and project unrivaled combat airpower.”

As one of the Air Combat Command’s largest installations, the fighter wing trains and prepares F-22 Raptor pilots, intelligence officers, and maintainers for worldwide assignment to combat Air Force units and sustains ready forces for worldwide deployment in support of combat operations. The installation is also home to T-38 Talons and 11 tenant organizations, including Headquarters 1st Air Force, 601st Air Operations Center, 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group, and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center.

The 325th Fighter Wing was selected as the 2021 USAF Outstanding Unit Award, for achievements including executing Air Combat Command’s largest air dominance exercise in history, establishing the Air Force’s first Fighter Generation Squadron to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s battlefield, and support for the Federal Emergency Management Agency during COVID-19 operations by mobilizing Airmen to staff vaccination sites.

While Tyndall is home to the world’s most advanced, state-of-the-art, fifth-generation fighter aircraft, the F-22 Raptor – it is also steeped in a rich military history. The base is named in memory of Lieutenant Francis B. Tyndall, a native of Sewall Point, Florida. Lieutenant Tyndall was a fighter pilot during World War I and was credited with shooting down four German planes behind enemy lines in 1918. On July 15, 1930, Tyndall’s plane crashed while inspecting Army fields near Mooresville, North Carolina. He was killed instantly. On June 13, 1941, the War Department officially named the new installation Tyndall Field.

Located in the Florida Panhandle, enjoying 129 miles of sugar-white sandy coastline and the warm emerald water of the Gulf of Mexico, Tyndall Air Force Base is positioned about 13 miles east of Panama City and 20 miles west of Mexico Beach. It encompasses more than 29,000 acres in southeastern Bay County. Approximately 5,000 military, civilian and contract personnel are employed at Tyndall, making it the largest employer in Bay County. The base provides support facilities for more than 9,000 military retirees and has a local economic impact that exceeds $740 million annually.

Following Hurricane Michael in 2018, which damaged 484 buildings on the base, Tyndall leaders joined with the Bay Defense Alliance, Bay County Commissioners, local, state, and federal officials, along with Department of Defense decision makers to plan far beyond a simple rebuild effort. Tyndall is coming back stronger than ever with a budget of almost $5 Billion and an estimated 3,000-3,500 workers committed to the effort that will result in an enterprise unseen in the Air Force so far.

Naval Support Activity Panama City

Assembling a “smart mix” of professionals with experience in logistics, budgeting, finance, and construction management, the Air Force stood up a Program Management Office, which is now the Natural Disaster Recovery Division, to partner with Tyndall in building the “Installation of the Future.” Tyndall will be the first installation fully integrated with innovative digital technologies, making it a true 21st Century air force base with a smart, efficient, and sustainable campus-like environment.

Over the next few years, Tyndall will increase in manpower and assets as its mission of projecting air dominance expands to include three new squadrons of F-35 Lightning II fighter jets as well as other major changes on the installation and facilities.

NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY PANAMA CITY

Naval Support Activity Panama City's mission focuses on professional military and civilian personnel delivering an integrated suite of efficient, effective, and responsive shore capabilities to enable and sustain the readiness of tenant activities.

NSA Panama City is the home of military diving for all services and allied nations, combining the perfect blend of research and development, manned and unmanned test and evaluation and training for future warfighters in the expeditionary and undersea warfare areas. We provide the necessary day-to-day services such as utilities, lodging, food, law enforcement, first responders and force protection to our tenant commands.

Major tenants include Naval Surface Warfare CenterPanama City Division, Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, Navy Experimental Diving Unit, Center for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Diving, and U.S. Coast Guard Station Panama City. Together, the installation employs approximately 4,000 civilian and military personnel with an annual payroll of more than $466 million. Additionally, the base contracts for local goods and services, which amounts to more than $600 million annually in economic impact.

NSA Panama City has origins in mine countermeasures research conducted during World War II at the U.S. Naval Mine Warfare Test Station in Solomons, Maryland. In 1945, critical equipment, facilities and personnel were transferred from Maryland to Panama City, Florida to occupy a 373-acre tract along St. Andrews Bay.

The base underwent multiple name changes until it reorganized under Commander, Navy Installations Command in October 2003 and renamed to Naval Support Activity Panama City reporting to the Commander, Navy Region Southeast.

Throughout its existence, NSA Panama City and its tenants have continued to evolve to meet the demanding requirements of the U.S. Navy – to defend today and to plan for tomorrow in response to national needs.
