A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT/CEO As the year comes to an end, it’s hard to believe 2020 is approaching but what a great year it was for our Chamber. Since incorporating in 1987, the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce has grown to the largest membership size in its history with almost 1,200 members! I want to thank my Chairwoman, Karen Smith, my Board of Directors and especially my team for working so hard in accomplishing our membership goal this year.

12

THE CIRCUIT November/December 2019

Another goal we set out to achieve was to give back to our community. In 2019, we started an Appreciation Luncheon series to thank all the men and women that worked so hard since Hurricane Michael. They put their community and others first before themselves. In 2019, we provided lunch to over 650 employees for the City of Panama City Beach, City of Lynn Haven, Bay County Government, and Gulf Power. Outback Steakhouse went above and beyond and provided steak for lunch! It was an honor to do this for so many people in our community and we look forward to continuing our luncheon series to other municipalities and companies next year. Some of our Chamber events also have a goal of giving back to our community. A portion of the proceeds from our sold out 10th Annual Golf Classic raised money for The Arc of the Bay. An

another event that will allow us to give back to Haney Technical Center. Last year, $7,000 was donated to Bay District Schools and this year a portion of this year’s race proceeds will go towards scholarships for students at Haney. All toys will be donated to the Panama City Beach Police Department and Bay County Sherriff’s Office toy drives.

Employees at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division’s (NSWC PCD) Test and Evaluation and Prototype Fabrication Division recently volunteered to collect and provide school supplies for Bay District School’s children in need. According to Paula Oliver, administrative assistant for the division, providing school supplies is crucial, especially in light of the devastation caused to the community by Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 hurricane that made landfall last October. 18

THE CIRCUIT November/December 2019

“Many local students are still living with the cleanup and rebuilding caused by Hurricane Michael,” said Oliver. “Damage is still visible, especially the more you travel eastward, so we really want to show support to our local students.” Oliver said this is the fourth year that NSWC PCD volunteers have collected school supplies for local students in the community. “The first year we began seeking donations, we were asking for five back packs and various supplies to distribute to each of our local beach schools,” said Oliver. “What is exciting is that every year donations keep increasing.” Nicole Waters, fabrication and prototype shops project manager

Your gift empowers our community. “When the storm hit my whole life changed. I think it’s awesome that there are people who are willing to invest in the future of people who want to better themselves.” – Brandon Writch, student

at NSWC PCD, said contributions will supply Hutchison Beach, Breakfast Point, Patronis, and West Bay elementary schools backpacks loaded with pencils, crayons, notebooks, and more. “This year, we collected 113 backpacks and hundreds of supplies that were distributed to the four schools. Last year we donated 44 backpacks and supplies. The outpouring of support from NSWC PCD has been tremendous this year,” said Waters. According to Waters, supporting today’s students is more important than ever. “NSWC PCD wants to let our community know we support them and are here for them, now more than ever as their children face going back to school,” said Waters. “Many of these children are starting over in new places at unfamiliar schools and with new friends as we approach the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Michael. We want to lessen the hardships challenging their academic success, especially since we’ve found we can assist by providing them with proper backpacks and school supplies.” Dr. Ben Schlorholtz, scientist at NSWC PCD and another volunteer involved with the supply drive echoed Oliver’s and Waters’ sentiments.

Hurricane Michael created the largest financial obstacle in the history of our College. Through the Hurricane Michael Student & Employee Disaster Relief Fund the Foundation has awarded $1.5 million in support to our students and staff. Help us keep this assistance alive by donating today. Together we are stronger!

“Our volunteers meet at the beginning of the school year to collect and distribute these supplies and we look forward to helping children again next year,” said Schlorholtz. “When we deliver the supplies to students, their visible appreciation is readily apparent. These outreach efforts may very well inspire our next generation to also pursue federal civil service careers.” WWW.PCBEACH.ORG

st. joe gives back

RESPONDING TO COMMUNITY NEEDS The St. Joe Community Foundation exceeded its initial $1 million pledge and continues to award grants for hurricane Michael relief and recovery efforts.

The noted British writer, Samuel Johnson, first coined the phrase “philanthropy” in the mid 1700’s and described it as "love of mankind; good nature". Over the decades and centuries to follow, individuals and corporations have nurtured and promoted philanthropic acts as a way to give back to the community in which they are a part. In general, most philanthropy is initiated through entities often referred to as “Foundations” which are most often legally organized and managed by a Board of Directors, overseeing a staff charged with executing the philanthropic vison of the founding individual or company. Many years ago, The St. Joe Company established The St. Joe Community Foundation as a way for the company to support localized needs in the communities where it has interests. The Foundation awards grants to the areas of education, environmental stewardship, building healthier communities and programs that honor the cultural arts.

Another benefactor was the Gulf Coast State College Foundation. “The St. Joe Community Foundation provided substantial and early support to Gulf Coast State College by funding emergency relief for students, faculty and staff, and it continues to do so. As a board member and advisor of the college’s foundation, I see the positive impact this has had by enabling students and employees to remain in school or at work, said Bill Cramer, President and Owner of Bill Cramer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC in Panama City. In addition to the various educational support initiatives, the Foundation assisted area childcare facilities in the restoration of services through grants to repair buildings that sustained significant damage in the storm enabling them to quickly reopen.

“We are truly blessed to be able to work with an organization that cares so deeply about its community and understands the need for corporate support for things that truly make a difference.” -Sharon Michalik

Likewise it provided emergency assistance for the employees of Bay County, the City of Panama City, Life Management Center and Sacred Heart on the Gulf Coast through their respective 501(c)3 organizations. Other grant recipients include Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, Anchorage Children’s Home, The Arc of the Bay and St. Andrew’s Christian Care which provides food and clothing for the community. Each

of these service providers were able to respond to their local community in part due to the Foundation’s interest in and rapid response to needs that were identified, most of which were urgent and vital to the community. The Foundation also awarded grants to assist local nonprofits with repairs and replacement items to allow them to better assist the community, along with funding for construction supplies deployed to assist with immediate repair needs throughout the areas affected by Hurricane Michael. Over the past year, the Foundation has provided several grants to the Bay Education Foundation including grants for mental health resources, student and teacher technology needs immediately following the storm, and financial assistance to assist with restoring athletic fields and programs. “The St. Joe Community Foundation plays an integral role in the wellbeing of our district,” said Sharon Michalik, Director of Communications for Bay County Schools. “No matter the need, large or small, we know that we can apply to the Foundation for help, and if it is possible for them to help us, they will. We are truly blessed to be able to work with an organization that cares so deeply about its community and understands the need for corporate support for things that truly make a

Hurricane Michael,” said Jorge Gonzalez, The St. Joe Company President and Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of The St. Joe Community Foundation. “Northwest Florida is our home. The residents and businesses of this beautiful region are strong and resilient. They are family. This was a time when we needed to step up and support our family in their time of need. Evidence abounds that Northwest Florida is coming back strong and sound.” The St Joe Community Foundation’s stated mission is to enrich the quality of life of the people who live,

work, and play in Northwest Florida. Created in 1999, the Foundation has provided grants in the areas of education, environmental stewardship, and programs that honor the cultural arts, all aimed at building healthier communities. “We believe that St Joe is creating communities that will have a long-range impact on the area and by extension, the lives of people in the region,” related Ms. Wilkes. The Foundation is funded exclusively by a transfer fee on the sale of real estate in certain communities developed by St. Joe. This fee applies the first time a property is sold, and subsequently on each resale, ensuring that the Foundation will be well funded for many years to come. “Our goal has always been to be supportive of the communities, being sensitive to their needs and to demonstrate through Foundation investments our commitment to be a good corporate citizen,” said Wilkes. Because the Foundation is a beneficiary of St. Joe’s real estate activities, it will remain a viable institution dedicated to serving the citizens of Northwest Florida. As needs arise, whether they be from a local community group with its own vision for a better way of life or a natural disaster, rest assured that The St. Joe Community Foundation stands ready to assist. ask the doctor

tis' the season! F O R M E D I C A L L A S E R T R E AT M E N T S ? BY JEREMY SUNSERI, MD

“Is there a time of year that is better to have laser treatments?” This seems to be a popular question among patients seeking laser treatments. The answer, of course, is yes. As a Florida dermatologist, there is most definitely a preferred time of year for most laser procedures. The holidays are synonymous with family time, turkey, football, and at my office…lasers. Yes, lots and lots of laser beams.

40

THE CIRCUIT November/December 2019

Lasers are indeed "magical conquests of

scientific brilliance and priced accordingly.

"

The term “laser” is an acronym (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), and it is used broadly to describe focused light, creating energy with a purpose. While the physics may be entertaining to a nerdy dermatologist, I realize that it is probably not why you’re reading this article. So, for this discussion, we will simply refer to lasers as a medical device used to treat skin conditions, and I will try to hide my inner nerd. Lasers are used to zap red or brown spots off sundamaged hide. They can remove unwanted hair, or ugly old tattoos that you got that one night after well, you know, unwanted tattoos. We can treat scars, for appearance and function. If you have acne scars, or heck, just too many pores from your great grandma Ethels’ gene pool, lasers can fix it. They can remove wrinkles, warts, and toe nail fungus. Lasers can tighten your skin pretty much anywhere these days. Shoot, they can even treat some skin cancer. They are indeed magical conquests of scientific brilliance and priced accordingly. So, why the seasonal variation? First of all, not all lasers are seasonally sensitive. There are many factors such as your skin type and type of laser. However, to illustrate seasonal importance, let’s look at the example of hair removal. In order to remove hair with a laser, we focus the energy at a wavelength of light that targets a specific color and depth so that we only blast the hair follicle. If successful, the energy is delivered selectively to the follicle (where your hair is born) resulting in the breaking of your hair makin’ apparatus. Accordingly, the ideal patient for hair removal is someone with fair skin and jet-black hair. This way, the energy can’t see the skin, so there are no untoward side effects, and all of the energy gets delivered directly to the target. Then, smash, boom, bang, no more hair. WWW.PCBEACH.ORG

41

In the summer time, after several weekends at the island, that tan glistening skin causes laser confusion (and skin cancer too!). When we go to blast the follicle, the light beam gets dispersed in the skin, and less energy hits the target. Although newer laser technology has found a way to get around this, and we do hair removal year around on all skin types and tans, (and no I’m not condoning) laser hair removal always works better with less sun exposure. Although the mechanism is somewhat different for other laser types, the same principles still hold true. Lasers typically target certain colors in the skin, or they add a lot of heat energy to the skin. Sun light and heat will either confuse the laser, or make your skin produce a darker color (hyperpigmentation) as an unintended side effect. So, this holiday season, as Jack Frost nips at your nose, remember, your local laser physician has something else to nip at your nose, or cheek, or back…should you so desire.

It has been a busy year and it's hard to believe how quickly 2019 is already coming to an end. With the holiday season on our heels, sometimes we forget to take this time to slow down and truly remember the reason for the sesaon. If you are able, please spend it surrounded by loved ones and making new holiday memories. HYPE had a successful fall calendar with two amazing events. On September 30th, we hosted a professional development luncheon in the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce board room. Guest speaker, Gary White with High Definition Coaching, spoke to us on how to "perfect our presentation" through John Maxwell training. Thank you to Mr. White for taking his time out of his busy schedule for HYPE and for the great lesson. I know we all learned something and left with more confidence. On October 29th, HYPE was able to have a fun social at Beef O' Brady's at the beach. Socials are the best way to network with other young professionals and make connections that will benefit you in the future. Thank you to Allen Cotton for generously hosting our group. We welcome you to send potential new members and invite interested co-workers to attend a HYPE event; the more we grow as a committee, the more you can grow as a young professional. Please sign up for our HYPE emails by contacting chamber@pcbeach.org to receive invitations to our monthly events and how to become more involved.

city of panama city beach

MIKE THOMAS M AY O R

As a youngster growing up on the beach, I can remember the holidays as an exceptionally slow time of the year with very little going on. Back in the day, Panama City Beach was deserted between Labor Day and Spring Break. It was especially deserted during the cold-weather months around the holidays. Restaurants and hotels were closed for the season. We had to drive across the bridge into town to do anything – play baseball, go to the movies or buy a gallon of milk. We had a few locals and a few snowbirds here and that was it. When the communities of Long Beach Resort, West Panama City Beach and Edgewater Gulf Beach consolidated with Panama City Beach in 1970, the combined population was just 1,370. There was just not much here to attract anyone to the beach in the off season and if they came, they had no access to anything. Most of the jobs on the beach then, as now, were tourist related. When there were no tourists, there was no work. It was a stressful time for parents because they could not provide for their families during the holidays. No work meant no income. Without jobs, it was difficult to be thankful.

• Leader in hearing healthcare for almost 80 years • Only provider with BelCare™ – for a lifetime of care and protection • 1,500 locations nationwide • Most insurance plans accepted

Nearly 20 years later and today an estimated 14,338 people call Panama City Beach home. We expect to continue to grow as more people decide to relocate and retire here. Building on the beach is robust, with a plethora of new businesses and single-family homes going in.

season with large-scale community events which attract locals and visitors. Pier Park and the many other shops along our tourist corridor bring in even more people. There are some who believe the growth is bad. Traffic is heavy sometimes, we all know that. But the growth has also brought more jobs and more opportunity. It’s brought a different kind of holiday season, where we are thankful that we enjoy the many blessings we do. Our community is welcoming; it is family friendly and it is a great place to call home. Bill Cramer (Bill Cramer Chevrolet Buick GMC) approached us to ask how he could assist us in this project when we first started and his commitment to match $50,000 raised in community donations was incredibly generous and deeply appreciated. Those efforts have been supported by continual assistance from many other non-profits like he Junior Service League, Mercy Chefs, Rachal’s Recovery Relief, the St. Joe Community Foundation and others. The other group I must commend, and thank, are the churches and faith-based organizations in our community. Under the ongoing leadership of Emerald Coast Worship Center, Pastor Dr. Steve Taylor and many others, our community’s churches banded together before the storm to provide weekend food bags (we call them Blessings in a Backpack) to more than 1,800 children who live in food instability. After the storm, despite the devastation suffered by many of our churches and faith-based partners, those same individuals are managing to provide more than 1,400 bags of assistance. Unfortunately, the needs are greater now than they were before the storm and many of our schools are now trying to support food pantries for their families. With the holidays in full swing, I’m looking forward

reunions and hitting the streets for a little last-minute Christmas shopping!

Remember,

“members do business with members”. We can intentionally spread some holiday cheer and make it a little more wonderful for somebody, and even find it ourselves. Here are a couple of ideas: •

CELEBRATING OVER 40 YEARS!

FaceTime/Skype an old friend. Technology has entirely changed our lives; use it to your advantage by connecting face-to-face with an old friend halfway around the world.

Buy coffee for a stranger. Next time you roll through the drive-thru of your local coffee shop, offer to pay for the person behind you; this pleasant surprise is guaranteed to

SAME FAMILY OWNERS.

SAME LOCAL FOOD.

SAME GREAT SERVICE. The 1920’s family owned grocery business evolved into serving it to you to eat instead of to take home. Since then, it’s continued to be family owned and oriented with a foundation built on quality and recipes that span generations.

brighten someone’s day. •

Leave a nice tip. Most of the servers I know are working the shift just trying to make ends meet.

Buy movie tickets for a family in your neighborhood. Know somebody on your block who has fallen into some difficult financial times? Time with family is always good and some holiday entertainment may be just the distraction they need to experience a little extra cheer.

Invite someone over for dinner. For any number of reasons, there are many people alone during the holidays.

Send a gift of food/coffee. There are countless inexpensive, clutter-free gift ideas that can be shipped nearly anywhere in the world.

Bring in a warm breakfast for your office. Take in something for your officemates to eat for a pleasant surprise.

And just like that, another outstanding year has come to a close. We want to thank all of you for your part in making 2019
