A MESSAGE

from the president/ceo S

ummer in Panama City Beach and across Bay County means different things to everyone, but to me it’s about spending time at the world’s most beautiful beaches, grilling out with family and friends, driving the boat out to Shell Island, watching vibrant sunsets, and of course seeing a lot of visitors come into town to enjoy vacation. June, July, and August continue to be the busiest time of the season that our Chamber members look forward to every year. Although for us locals, we know the traffic can be a bit disruptive, but it’s important to remember that our visitors are here to support our economy, our community, and enjoy our amazing destination we proudly call home. So, leave a few minutes early and remember how many jobs this time of year supports within the hospitality industry and how it essentially trickles down to most other industries as well. Summertime to me also means celebrating our country and independence. As we celebrate the 4th of July, our independence, and our freedoms, please continue to thank the men and women that make this all possible—our military service members and first responders. They put their lives on the line every day to protect us and take care of us.

12

THE CIRCUIT July/August 2022

The Panama City Beach Chamber Board of Directors and our team recently toured the Naval Support Activity Panama City installation in June. From the very beginning to the end, everyone on base was so polite, informative, and proud of their hard work. NSA PC employs more than 4,000 civilian and military personnel with an annual payroll of more than $466 million. Additionally, the base contracts for local goods and services, which amounts to more than $600 million annually in economic impact. We thank you all for hosting us and for your service! Last but not least, the “Attractions & Things To Do” featured guide in our publication makes it easy to find some fun this summer— indoors, outdoors, or on the water! If you’re looking for something to do or have family and friends coming to town, this guide will make planning a whole lot easier. Plus, you are supporting proud Chamber members, so take a look—there are family-friendly activities and adventures for all ages. Enjoy your summer!

“We need to have an integrated response to come together

and work together to secure the base and our people,” said Staff Sgt. Jeydi Delgado, 325th CES NCOIC of emergency

management programs. “When we’re securing the base before a storm, no one knows a unit’s vulnerabilities and assets better than its people.”

The impacts of a hurricane are not new to Tyndall personnel after Hurricane Michael, but the base has taken lessons learned from 2018 to better prepare Airmen, families, units and assets for future storms. Tyndall will always remain

vulnerable to severe weather due to its location, therefore

ensuring the base itself and families are ready remains a commander priority.

“Sometimes it’s easy for us to compartmentalize our

“We have to pass down information to our dependents,

H C A E s k B c i r T & s p Ti 15 Tips & tricks for a hassle-free Beach experience A

by Tiffiney Castleberry

s we enter the dog days of summer, you can't help but crave splashing into the refreshing waters of Panama City Beach, sinking your toes into the soft, warm sand, and enjoying the fresh, salty aroma of the Gulf breeze. But let's face it—not every aspect of your beach trip can go exactly as planned. To

24

THE CIRCUIT July/August 2022

help get you on the right track for your next beach visit, I decided to compile this list of beach tips and tricks so you can have a more enjoyable time. Become a professional beachgoer by incorporating a few of these tips for a more hassle-free experience on the sugary white sands of Panama City Beach.

Make a day at the beach even more fun by bringing a football, frisbee, kite, or even a 1. game of cornhole. Put your cell phone in a resealable plastic bag, such as a Ziplock, to keep it dry 2. and sand-free. The touchscreen will still work through the plastic. Use baby powder to remove sand from your skin quickly. Baby powder 3. removes moisture from your skin, so when you rub it over the sandy areas of your body, the sand will dry out and fall right off.

Freeze your water bottles instead of bringing ice packs to keep your snacks 4. cold and fresh. Your water will be extra cold for hours, and your snacks will stay fresh, too. For the kids, bring along frozen Capri Suns and let them thaw until they are like a slushy.

Make soothing aloe vera ice cubes for quick relief to a painful sunburn. Fill 5. an ice cube tray 3/4 full of aloe vera gel for a few hours or overnight. Some aloe vera

gels have added ingredients that can disrupt the freezing process, so be sure to use a 100% pure aloe gel.

Use a mesh bag to carry beach toys to prevent bringing sand home with you. 6. Just shake it out before leaving the beach and VOILA! No more bags full of beach sand! For a sand-free picnic or lounging area, lay out a fitted sheet upside down, place a heavy item in each corner such as 7. a cooler or beach bag, and pull the corners around them. Bring a tent for the kids to play or rest in whenever they need a break. This is useful, especially if you have little ones 8. who need naps. A tent will keep them from catching too much sun and allow them to rest easier. Just make sure it is wellventilated.

Avoid your valuables from being stolen by stashing them in an empty sunscreen bottle. You can also put your 9. valuables inside a rolled-up diaper. (People will assume it's dirty and stay away from it.) Come prepared to treat jellyfish stings the right way. If you get stung by a jellyfish, pour vinegar over the sting! 10. Jellyfish tentacles launch little stingers into your skin and release venom. When vinegar is poured onto the sting, it prevents more poison from releasing. Jellyfish can sting even when they are beached, so when your kids find one and decide to get a little curious, be sure to keep them away.

You and your kids just dug a massive hole on the beach, and you couldn't be any prouder of your teamwork and 11. accomplishment. I know digging holes on the beach is fun (believe me), but please make sure you fill them in before you

leave. When left unfilled, not only can people fall in, resulting in serious injury, but these holes become death traps to our sea turtles. Feeding the seagulls seems like it would be a great time; however, it is highly inadvisable. As soon as you feed 12. one of these beach scavengers, somehow they ALL see it! The next thing you know, your beach site is overwhelmed with seagulls flocking around you. (It takes forever to shoo them away and you need to cover your heads, if you catch my drift.) Down here for a birthday? Panama City Beach is home to nearly a hundred public 13. beach access points. Find the beach access number of the age you are turning and have your picture taken underneath it! Scan this QR Code to find the beach access points map.

PCB has an ordinance, Leave Only Footprints, in place to protect our beaches and wildlife. Any personal items left 14. on the beach unaccompanied between 7 pm – 7 am will be removed and disposed of. Please, leave only footprints. Rip currents are unpredictable, dangerous, and sometimes fatal. It's important to 15. take the beach flag system seriously and know what signs to look for. Want to receive text alerts when the beach flags change? Text "PCBFLAGS" to 888777. Scan this QR code to learn more about what to look for.

I hope you found these beach tips useful for your visit to our beautiful beaches this summer. Stay safe out there! WWW.PCBEACH.ORG 25

Ed Hickey formed several beach service businesses in south Florida, then expanded to operate in more than fifty locations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Myrtle Beach, San Diego and the U.S. Virgin Islands, before finding his lifelong home in Panama City Beach in 1952. His first business here was a beach concession behind Long Beach Resort. Dick Doerr was Ed Hickey’s choice to operate his startup Panama City Beach operation. He first met his mentor in 1955 while a 16-year-old high school junior in Redington Beach. Starting out as a lifeguard, he soon helped Mr. Hickey in various other activities at the hotel, including movies and bingo nights. After his high school graduation in 1957, Doerr said, Hickey made him an unforgettable offer. “He said, ‘How would you like to go up to Panama City Beach and run the beach services there?’ ” Dazzled by the opportunity, the 18-year-old Doerr loaded a Jeep and trailer with beach supplies – chairs, umbrellas and canvas floats – and headed north to the Panhandle. Before long, the business expanded to provide beach chairs, umbrellas, surfboards, paddleboards and parasail adventures to its customers. “The only thing [we had] on the Beach at that time was a 12-by12-foot concrete building with a garage door for the equipment,” Doerr recalled. Decades before its growth into a world-class tourist destination, the 27-mile Gulf beachfront was a jumbled line of oneand two-story houses and apartments. “We would work twelve hours a day, seven days a week,” he said. “At the end of summer, we’d haul everything back to Redington Beach.”

Ed Hickey became a true pioneer in Panama City Beach tourism. In addition to founding Ed’s Beach Service, which grew to provide equipment at several dozen beachside resorts and hotels along Front Beach Road, he founded a half-dozen other businesses. These included a trampoline center, a paddle boat concession on the lake behind Long Beach Plaza, and a rental car company. He also owned a hotel in Redington Shores and co-founded a custom furniture store in Boone, N.C. Jay Quave started out as a lifeguard working for Ed Hickey, but the two men consolidated their relationship in 1989 when they became business partners and expanded to become the regional distributors for Panama Jack suntan products across the Gulf Coast. Mr. Hickey had known company founder Jack Katz since 1974 when the former University of Florida football star launched his company. “After the success of Panama Jack suntan products, Ed suggested that Jack put the Panama Jack logo on T-shirts, towels, hats, etc.” Quave recalled. “Ed was a marketing genius. He put Panama Jack on Hobie Cat sails, beach chairs and umbrellas, and flew the banner plane down the beach with Panama Jack on it.” Quave bought out Mr. Hickey’s share in the business in 1996 and remains CEO of Gulf Coast Panama Jack. “Ed was a mentor to me and hundreds of other young men,” Quave said. Another business Mr. Hickey founded is still operating today: Opened in 1982, Ed’s Sheds at 8224 Panama City Beach Parkway today is one of the oldest self-storage facilities in the city. According to Marilyn Petry, manager of the business since 2000, Hickey originally needed a place to store his beach service products, but soon realized there was a growing market for providing self-storage spaces for other residents. “He really didn’t start out to make a storage business,” Petry said. “But it grew.”

As a community leader, Mr. Hickey helped develop the first City Hall building in Panama City Beach; he was a supportive member of the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce and was awarded the prestigious “Pioneer of the Year” award in 1999 for his many contributions. Many community leaders today recall how Hickey mentored and guided them as they began their careers on the beach. “We developed a very close personal relationship,” recalled Jeff DiBenedictis, Market President for BancorpSouth, on his first encounter with Hickey twenty-five years ago. “He was like a father to me; he treated me as a son.” To Marilyn Petry, Ed Hickey was the quintessential self-made man who mentored countless young people as they entered the business world. “He taught people the right work ethic,” Petry recalled. “A lot of people who worked for him went on to be very successful themselves.” Like so many other young people who found themselves working for Ed Hickey, Doerr described him as a stern boss but inside, a loving person. “He was the best, but if you didn’t do your job, he would fire you in a heartbeat.” Petry agreed. “He was gruff on the outside, but when you got to know him, he was a very gentle, caring man.” She noted that many people he had worked with at the onset of his career at the Beach would call him each year on his birthday. “Some [would call who worked with Ed] as long as forty or even fifty years ago,” Petry said. “He is missed here a lot.” For Nick Simons, meeting the World War II veteran when he himself was just a 13-year-old teenager living outside St. Petersburg proved to be a major turning point in his life. “Ed saw something in me, and we forged a 60-year friendship,” said Simons, who today owns a beach service firm in Redington Shores. “Everything I know about business I learned by listening, watching and observing what Ed did.” Simons said he made a point of coming up to Panama City Beach when he heard that Hickey’s long journey was nearing the end. “We visited,” Simons said. “He was still pretty lucid, his mind clear despite his ailments. We laughed, we cried, we laughed some more. He was one of a kind.” A close family member echoed that sentiment. “Ed was an awesome man with a heart of gold – occasionally a dagger for a tongue,” recalled Kimberly Alloway, Lynn’s daughter from a previous marriage. “But he was a man who truly loved everyone and loved to see people better themselves …. ” Ed Hickey Jr. is survived by his loving partner, Lynn Alloway, two sons, Edward Hickey III and Matthew Gill; two grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

CLUB 360

C

lub 360 (#womengivingbackfullcircle) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit formed to help engage girls to learn more about their ideal career

choice prior to graduating high school and assist them with financial support.

We are like-minded women who are giving back full circle through educational programs that include career assessments, surveys, video instruction, career shadowing, and scholarship opportunities.

Our target audience may surprise you, as it is a unique approach. Club 360 is about helping girls who get lost in the shuffle of finding their way in life after high school. Traditionally, when it comes to family

household income, we serve the middle class, and typically the girls are

not able to qualify for a grant to help fund their education. In addition, their GPA is between a 2.0 and 2.8, which isn’t high enough for scholarship opportunities. Our program helps girls who need our help - both with solidifying their career choice and with financial support.

Members of Club 360 have the goal of helping these amazing young ladies find success early in life, without having a multitude of student loans to repay for years to come. In addition, because we are like-

t Culver’s, our mission is, “We genuinely care, so every guest who chooses Culver’s leaves happy.” So, whether we’re cooking the

perfect ButterBurger® to order or scooping up our freshest batch of the Flavor of the Day, we work hard to ensure you are getting a wholesome, delicious meal served with a heartfelt smile and hometown hospitality. Our promise to never compromise on quality begins with sourcing the best ingredients and continues through the way we prepare your meal: fresh and just for you. It’s why we always use fresh, never-frozen beef and whole, white meat chicken from America’s family farms. It’s why we only use family farm fresh dairy for our Frozen Custard. And it’s why every single cheese curd we’ve served has come from a Wisconsin dairy farm. We care about where your food comes from because we know you do too. Culver’s of Panama City Beach opened in June 2016 and is locally owned and operated by Brian and Karissa Maytum. We are committed to supporting the local community and strive to make meaningful differences in the lives of others. From sponsorships to donations and fundraising, we are always looking for ways to support local schools, community organizations, and agriculture, to name a few. Our heart for the people we serve inspires us to make our community stronger by creating opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors. Newbys Too, located at 4103 Thomas Drive, was just recently renovated and is a sports fan's dream come true! It has 23 TVs showing all the sports you could wish for, pool tables, dart boards, 21 drafts on tap, and an outside pavilion featuring live music and hookah! Last but certainly not least is Newbys Brew and Booze, located at 7800 Front Beach Road. This location features a full coffee house, package store, craft beer, craft cocktails, and wine on draft! hen I started working at Gulf Coast Community College back in the summer of 1982, things seemed to be calmer and slower than I find it at Gulf Coast State College some 40 years later! While implementing new ways and enhancing existing ones to support and serve our students has always been our summertime focus. Over the years, we’ve found new ways and followed new paths to expand our role as this community’s college. The lack of sufficient nurses at all levels is becoming a regional and national crisis, compounded in this area by the expansion of several existing medical facilities and the impending development of a new

as well as the employees working at the many surrounding businesses. The clinic will accept most insurances and has a sliding “ability to pay” scale for those who are currently uninsured. Though summertime is usually considered “fun time” for many, the College also offers a huge slate of credit, non-credit, and recreational programs, courses, and activities that appeal to mostly anyone. Summer youth programs in sports, cooking, STEM, and STEAM are sure to capture the imagination of learners of many ages. We are also expanding our “Prepper” series of non-credit courses to include not only series favorites like “Building Bugout Bags” and “Using Solar Energy in an Off-Grid Setting” but to also include a catalog of favorites from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program, created by FEMA. These courses, held in conjunction with county staff, will educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact this area and train them

In addition, we have partnered with PanCare Health, a local medical provider, in a newly opened on-campus health clinic. This full-service clinic will not only serve the campus communities of both Gulf Coast and Florida State University – Panama City Campus, but it will also be open and available to the residents of surrounding neighborhoods,

While summertime can be a time for a little rest and relaxation, it can also be a time to jump into enjoyable and useful programs and activities that will meet all levels of interest and ability. I hope to see you on campus soon.

ummer is hot, and so is our local job market. Low regional unemployment and the high demand for workers have not put a damper on continued job availability and growth in the Bay, Gulf, and Franklin County areas. First, let’s update you on the current employment situation as we enter summer.

April’s unemployment rate of 2.1 percent for the Bay, Gulf, and Franklin County region is not only the lowest since the start of the pandemic, but it is at a historic low. Across the summer months, we expect to see much of the same. The labor force has grown month over month showing workers rapidly returning to work. April’s employment of 97,511 in the region is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic and since Hurricane Michael struck in October of 2018. For those who remain out of work or those who wish to explore new career opportunities, there are abundant opportunities. The job market remains red-hot for job seekers, and confidence is high as they are leaving their positions in search of new ones with higher wages. Voluntary departures (quits) were near an all-time high as job seekers pursued these new job opportunities, according to the April JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Demand for talent from employers continues to remain elevated, however, with job openings at or near an all-time high, as per the April JOLT report. Nationally, there were 1.9 job openings for every unemployed person. Employers are also holding on tightly to their existing workforce, with layoffs and discharges at a national record low in April. Employers continue to lure workers with increased wages. Between 2019 and 2020, wages have increased 5.3 percent in the Bay, Gulf, and Franklin region, below Florida’s 7.9 percent increase. As we make our way into the summer, job postings have increased. Between April and May, job postings jumped to 1,820 unique job postings, which reflects the continued demand for workers. Some of the occupations with the most job postings for May included (data from EMSI Burning Glass, 2022): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

street. Offer to help wherever you can, be genuine about it, and you never know what kind of great things will evolve from that. If you offer up a useful contact and help someone out, they will be grateful and will remember and respect you for it.

All of us are wired for friendship, so why not put that to good use and start business relationships within the Beach Chamber of Commerce? After all, “Members Do Business with Members” while reaching “Bay County and Beyond”! I highly recommend business networking as a way to gain new clients and build a worthwhile business. It’s not always who you know; it is who knows YOU!

You are closer to getting what you want and meeting whoever you need than you think. Your Beach Chamber membership benefits are endless because of members like you. Take advantage of what we have to offer, stay connected, and grow those relationships!

If you want a successful business, then you need to have a great source of connections in your network—it really opens the door to talk to people that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to easily talk to or find. It’s not just about who you are networking with directly either—that person you are talking to will already have a network that you can tap into as well.

Here’s to new relationships continuing to connect the dots,

People want to help those who help others, and people want to help those who help them! So don’t just take, take, take. You won’t continue getting for long—your Chamber relationships should be a two-way
