As I brainstorm what I’m going to write in my letter, there is one thing I can not get off of my mind, so I will go ahead and address it—I love to eat. I mean, seriously, this girl appreciates a good meal. Having been born and raised here, I have my go-to local restaurants that I love; however, I am constantly being surprised by all of the amazing restaurants in our area that I am still trying for the first time. Working at the Chamber exposes me to the new cafés, pizzerias, coffee shops, fresh local seafood spots, and more. But it also exposes me to the places that have been here for generations that I have neglected. I had a birthday at the end of February and had the opportunity to visit some of our Chamber’s restaurant members throughout the week (one of them I went to for the first time because the ad they sent over for this issue was so tempting). I was beyond impressed with every dish I ate, and I will be adding them to my list of favorites. I say all of this because, whether you are dining as a visitor or a resident of Bay County, there are so many local restaurants to explore, support, and fall in love with. Whether you’re looking for Cajun fare, fresh oysters, southern comfort, or innovative ingredients, our membership is the best place to find all of it. For a complete list of all our restaurant members, visit our Dining Guide on page 47. The “Dining & Entertaining” issue is special to me because, one year ago, it was the first issue of The Circuit I had ever done. In fact, it was the first magazine I had ever done, period. I think back to when Lauren Shaw, our former Director of Communications, passed the torch to me and I remember asking for her opinion on every idea I had for that issue. She finally said something that set the tone for my past year. She told me, “The Circuit can be whatever you want it to be. It’s yours now.” Since that first issue, each edition of the magazine going forward has been a learning experience for me. I slowly found my groove, pulled inspiration from other publications, redesigned the layout, and evolved The Circuit into more of my vision. I am proud of the growth in the past year of the publication, and I hope that, as an advertiser, you are proud of your investment in it. To Growth and Good Eats,

The intended use of the synthetic slime is to provide non-lethal and non-kinetic defense to the Fleet. “The synthetic hagfish slime may be used for ballistics protection, firefighting, anti-fouling, diver protection or anti-shark spray. The possibilities are endless”, said Kogot. “Our goal is to produce a substance that can act as nonlethal and non-kinetic defense to protect the warfighter.” Kincer said the addition of using a material such as the slime will be valuable to the U.S. Navy. “Researchers have called the hagfish slime one of the most unique biomaterials known. For the U.S. Navy to have its hands on it or a material that acts similar would be beneficial,” said Kincer. “From a tactical standpoint, it would be interesting to have a material that can change the properties of the water at dilute concentrations in a matter of seconds.” The effort to create new synthetic means to behave like the natural hagfish slime is supported by Navy Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) funding and the Office of Naval Research Code

development sub-committee launched a new program called the “AFSC Immersion” (Air Force Specialty Code), targeted towards all Airmen on Tyndall who are interested in changing career fields. “The immersion program is intended primarily for first-term Airmen and is meant to introduce individuals interested in retraining to a different AFSC with the end goal being cross training,” said Staff Sgt. Jason M. Daneault, Tyndall Focus 5/6 professional development committee co-chair. “The program involves shadowing Airmen from participating career fields to give the potential cross-trainee an idea of daily operations within that career field.” Eight AFSC immersions were successfully completed under the new program during the last half of 2016. “Giving Airmen the chance to see the workspaces first hand gives them a great opportunity to make informed decisions in terms of choosing a new career field,” Daneault said. “It develops you differently aside from routine training, it gears you towards a way of life and helps you develop your own Airmen.” The program has a secondary benefit of introducing first-term Airmen to career Airmen in different fields and also to resources around the installation that could help with making the final decision to apply for cross-training. “This is going to be a great year to get involved,

SALTWATER MARKETPLACE

EMBRY-RIDDLE WORLDWIDE

A NEW PANAMA CITY BEACH CAFE

NO. 1 IN NATION FOR ONLINE BACHELOR’S DEGREES

A funny thing, this journey called life... You just never know where the next turn in the path will come. Ours led us to a little café, coffee shop, and market called Saltwater Marketplace.

Embry-Riddle Worldwide has again been named the No. 1 educator in the nation for online bachelor’s degrees, according to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report listing. This is the fourth consecutive year we have secured a spot on one of the most coveted annual rankings of the best online educators in the United States. Schools are evaluated on student services and engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer reputation, and technology. Embry-Riddle Worldwide serves more than 22,000 students online and at 125 campuses in the United States and globally. This is quite an honor to be among other notable colleges and universities such as Temple University, University of Oklahoma, Oregon State University, and University of Florida. For the complete U.S. News & World Report 2017 list, go to www.usnews.com/education/online-education/bachelors.

Think about it—who doesn’t want to have a coffee shop on the beach where the dress code is swimsuits and flip flops, the conference calls are in the salty air, and the meetings are on the white sands of the Emerald Coast. This vision that became our labor of love unfolded a few months ago. We knew we wanted a place where friends will gather with a warm smile to go with a hot cup of Starbuck’s coffee or cold drink. A place where, for a moment, the waves of relaxation wash over and you can quiet your mind. Many weekend afternoons we will have live music on our patio, featuring local musicians, and if we have rain, we can always move the music inside! We serve breakfast and lunch. Some of our breakfast items are fresh baked biscuit sandwiches, ham & cheese stuffed croissants, muffins, and more (and of course Starbucks Coffee). For lunch, enjoy an artisan pizza, handcrafted sandwich, or a chopped salad. We also have soda, beer, wine, and other assorted beverages. There is so much to say about our quaint Panama City Beach café that I would like to share, so stop by and see us and we will share our café-coffee shop story with you. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, or you can visit our website at www.saltwatermarketplace.com.

THE CIRCUIT March / April 2017

Embry-Riddle Worldwide has earned numerous accolades including being named one of the best online colleges in the nation by the Center for Online Education, as well as being designated a top military-friendly school by Victory Media. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide became one of the first to offer distance learning. Today, we continue to raise the bar. Along with other Embry-Riddle Worldwide locations the Embry-Riddle Tyndall/Panama City Campus offers online degree programs with 12 undergraduate and 10 graduate terms throughout the year. Each term is nine weeks in length providing each individual a flexible schedule for their hectic life.

HOLY NATIVITY EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

NICK’S SLICE OF BROOKLYN

Holy Nativity Episcopal School proves learning is fun. The joyful faces of our Jr. Pre-K to Kindergarten students can be found on our playground and in our classrooms where imaginations run free. Science, language, and math are taught with hands-on experiences such as becoming the Big Bad Wolf and blowing straw, sticks, and bricks to learn the physics of The Three Little Pigs. Our Early Education Department develops a love of learning that will be the foundation for lifelong education.

When it’s time for your inevitable weekly or even bi-weekly pizza dinner in Panama City Beach, there is a new place where Front Beach meets Hutchison Road that everyone is talking about—and for good reason. Nick’s Slice of Brooklyn has quickly made their mark on the beach with great food and an awesome atmosphere for the entire family.

PROVING LEARNING IS FUN EVERYDAY

In 1st-5th, this passion for learning continues. With almost 60 years of experience, Holy Nativity is a perfect mix of history and tradition with ever evolving technology. Students create traditional projects hand-in-hand with technological experiences. For example, one class culminates a study of Earth by creating a model of the planet after taking a virtual reality field trip to the cosmos. Special area teachers couple with 3-K through 5th grade classes to provide Spanish, Technology, P.E., Music, Library, and Art. Our middle school provides rigorous core courses including Pre-AP Language Arts, Advanced math, and Honors Science and Social Studies, plus an array of electives providing students with everything needed for academic success while exploring areas of personal interest. Electives include visual and performing arts, musical instruction, tennis, sailing, yoga, running club, coding, and a writing workshop taught by a published author. HNES graduates achieve 100% acceptance into high school advanced academic programs. The success of our students and the overwhelming achievements of our graduates speak for the excellence of our school.

A NEW PIZZERIA & BAR IN PANAMA CITY BEACH

What makes Nick’s pizza and stromboli stand out? It’s authentic. Nick puts his hometown of Brooklyn and 30 years of experience in everything he makes. The dough, desserts, and famous marinara are all made in house. Nick even makes his own fresh mozzarella cheese every morning. You’re also sure to have a good time during your visit. With a full bar and friendly outgoing staff, you just might think you’ve stepped into a real New York pizzeria. While you’re there, don’t forget to give Nick your best New York “How you doin?” Once you meet him, you’ll know for sure he’s from Brooklyn, and you’ll understand why everything is so delicious. So the next time you’re deciding where to eat, Nick has one word for you—Fuhgeddaboudit! Stop by and see us at 13528 Front Beach Road, Panama City Beach.

THE CIRCUIT March / April 2017

SAVOR A MATTER OF TASTE UNwineD is on the Move BY CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN

J

ust in time for the return of gentle spring weather, Visit Panama City Beach is partnering with Garden & Gun magazine to revamp and move a signature tasting event, UNwineD, to the spring. In previous years, UNwineD has been celebrated as an autumnal event,

but with spring of 2017 the event itself will be reborn and reach heights previously unimagined. Scheduled for Friday and Saturday March 24-25, this year’s event is titled “UNwineD: Celebrating Craft Beer, Spirits & Wine,” and has all sorts of new surprises in store for attendees. On Friday, Garden & Gun will kick off UNwineD with the ultimate VIP experience, teaming up some of their favorite Southern culinary experts to cook up— and mix up— the finest dishes and cocktails served south of the Mason-Dixon Line. This ticketed VIP experience will offer 250 attendees a chance to taste and sip spirited cocktails and unique food pairings while enjoying live music and lively conversation. Saturday, the Grand Tasting at UNwineD will start things off with a delightful afternoon of food, drink and fun while offering sample products from invited wineries, breweries and distilleries. This, however, is merely prelude to the “Picnic in the Park & Concert,” with headlining musical act The Avett Brothers, who will take the stage at the Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheater. The Grammy-nominated band’s style has been described as folk, Americana and American roots music, and their albums have reached the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Americana/Folks Albums chart, as well as No. 1 positions on Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and Top Album Sales. WWW.PCBEACH.ORG

31

GRAMMY-NOMINATED BAND THE AVETT BROTHERS HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS FOLK, AMERICANA AND AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC, AND THEIR ALBUMS HAVE REACHED THE NO. 1 POSITION ON BILLBOARD’S AMERICANA/FOLKS ALBUMS CHART, AS WELL AS NO. 1 POSITIONS ON TOP ROCK ALBUMS, ALTERNATIVE ALBUMS AND TOP ALBUM SALES. The appropriately named “Picnic in the Park & Concert” begins at 5 p.m. Saturday and will offer food and beverages for sale, including select bottles of wine from the Grand Tasting to enjoy on-site. More than 1,000 attendees are expected to join the fun at Aaron Bessant Park— adjacent to the Pier Park entertainment and shopping complex— for a weekend of tasting wines from around the globe; regional, national and international craft beers; and an assortment of fine spirits. Local restaurants and caterers will also provide small bites of coastal cuisine to accompany the tastings. Since 2011, UNwineD has traditionally been held in the fall, but by moving to the spring, UNwineD becomes a lovely way to welcome the advent of warmer weather while at the same time allowing more notable wineries to be involved in the festival. Jayna Leach, the Vice President of Marketing for Visit Panama City Beach, is very enthusiastic about the change. “What better way to ring in spring than by throwing an event that’s like a two-day Southern garden party with amazing wines, beers and spirits?,” she commented.

32

THE CIRCUIT March / April 2017

This year’s inclusion and emphasis on spirits is also new to UNwineD and is quite appropriate considering how popular craft cocktails and spirits have become on the national food and drink scene. If you discover some new favorites, full bottles of wine and spirits will be available for purchase to take home at a special retail tent set up at the festival. UNwineD will be held rain or shine and is, of course, limited to patrons of legal drinking age, so remember to bring your ID. Festival attendees are advised to plan ahead for alternate transportation after the tasting sessions, and taxis will be available on-site to assist in safe rides home. More information is available at the event website at VisitPanamaCityBeach.com/UNwineD. Tickets are on sale now. VIP, Grand Tasting and single day concert passes are available until they sell out. Make your plans early so you don’t miss out on this fun-filled weekend of food, drink and music set in the beautiful environs of Panama City Beach!

THE CIRCUIT March / April 2017

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE “

Culinary and Entertainment Off The Beaten Path BY BRYAN HUNTER

W

hen you live in paradise, it’s hard to find a compelling reason to leave your particular patch of it. But one of the best benefits of venturing out occasionally is that it makes you appreciate your home turf even more, not to mention the “Aha!” moment that comes from discovering a real gem. The good news is you don’t have to buy a plane ticket – or even a tank of gas – to experience a bona fied culinary and entertainment “staycation.” If it’s been awhile since you’ve ventured over the Hathaway Bridge to the “other side” of St. Andrew’s Bay, once you’ve gone to Panama City you’ll wonder what on earth you’ve been waiting for. As a bonus, when you go you’ll discover not one, but two distinct “downtowns,” each offering its own distinctive charms – not to mention the handful of hidden gems you’ll find just slightly off the beaten path. Harrison (what most long-time residents still refer to as “Downtown”) and Historic St. Andrews each has its own vibe. Both pedestrian-friendly districts feature well-maintained sidewalks lined with restaurants, galleries, boutiques, antiques shops and watering holes. Better yet, they’re linked by a short-but-scenic (and walkable or bikeable) West Beach Drive, which skirts St. Andrew’s Bay and is lined with stately houses on sweeping lawns presided over by a parliament of ancient live oaks and pines. With all the great seafood and other irresistible delicacies, your body will thank you for pounding the pavement.

HISTORIC ST. ANDREWS We’ll start with St. Andrews, as you’ll encounter it first soon after crossing the bridge. Anchored by a beautiful marina that reflects the neighborhood’s roots as a 19th-century fishing village, Beck Avenue serves as the main thoroughfare. While Beck offers its own temptations, it also pays to venture down a few of its connecting arteries. By all means, don’t skip sauntering down to St. Andrew’s Marina itself, just one short block west off Beck on Bayview Avenue. There you’ll find Ernie Hall, a nationally heralded chef who traded in his land-lubber toques to open his own kitchen – on a boat. Permanently docked at Slip 80 on the marina just steps off Bayview (look for the distinctive red trim on the crisp white boat), Just the Cook serves up some creatively delectable Latin Caribbean-inspired fare, such as a Shrimp Tortuga, but the menu item that best matches the eclecticism of his floating kitchen is the Dan-D Donut Burger – a rosemary-seasoned all-beef burger topped with Canadian bacon, Swiss and bleu cheese, and a grilled red pepper, sandwiched between two grilled doughnuts from the locally iconic Dan-D Donuts. One bite will dispel any skepticism you may harbor about the unusual combination. | Slip 80 at St. Andrews Marina. Directly across from intersection of Bayview and 11th Street. On the other (east) side of Beck on 12th St., Little Village is an outdoor bazar that embraces a Deadhead vibe beneath trees shading brightly

Historic St. Andrews is reminiscent of a slice of Key West transported to the Emerald Coast. It offers a slightly eccentric, eclectically colorful personality perhaps best summarized by an unofficial hashtag embraced by a number of merchants and restaurants: #KeepStAndrewsSalty. As the central business district, with plenty of insurance and law offices, banks and local government offices, Harrison could be considered St. Andrew’s slightly more buttoned-up sibling, but that doesn’t mean the downtown area doesn’t know how to let its hair down and have a good time. After all, Harrison has slowly and intentionally earned a reputation as Panama City’s (and in some ways Bay County’s) Arts & Entertainment district. While the following is far from exhaustive (there is simply too much to review everything in this short space) it should be enough to get you started in exploring – and eating and celebrating – your way through Panama City. And as I’ve found on several recent trips, there’s always another surprise – old or new – just around each corner.

colored individual booths reminiscent of Gypsy wagons filled with fairtrade art, crafts, and home and garden décor. But what keeps drawing me back is an outdoor rendition of Finns Island Style Grub that serves the same local brews and killer fish tacos as the Beach-side location. Opt to sit on the waterside deck for a relaxing lunch. | 2803 12th St.

When Gilbert Hamati moved to Panama City in 2007, he immediately began missing Bay City fare. His loss was Panama City’s gain as Hamati eventually filled that void by opening Trigo San Francisco Style Deli. Six years later, his downtown eatery has become a local favorite for its daily soups, salads, subs and pizzas. | 119 Harrison Ave.

As you were headed towards Little Village, right on the corner of Beck and 12th, you can’t have missed the bright yellow bungalow with a decrepit sailboat permanently beached out front. That is Hunts Oyster Bar, a local institution offering just the sort of comfort and lack of pretention you’d expect from an old-time Northwest Florida oyster shack. | 1150 Beck Ave.

Millies Café transports New Orleans just slightly east along the coast to serve up Louisiana-style seafood and poboys. If you need a powderedsugar pick-me-up, Millie’s will offer you a convincingly authentic beignet along with a cup of coffee strong enough to stand a spoon up in. Fully embracing Harrison’s status as PC’s entertainment corridor, Millies hosts a regular lineup of local music acts. | 228 Harrison Ave.

For a complete change of pace from Hunts timeless appeal, head north up Beck for two coffee shops such as you’d expect to find in Seattle or Portland. In addition to pouring an excellent selection of fresh-roasted whole bean coffees, St. Andrew’s Coffee House & Bistro also serves an astonishing ever-evolving breakfast and lunch menu (until 3:00 pm) of well-executed bistro favorites infused with Gulf Coast influences. | 1006 Beck Ave.

Contemplating a trip to Coastal Campania? Save the airfare. For more than two decades, Ferrucci Ristorante’s owner, Mike Ferrucci, has been executing perfect Italian maritime recipes by taking full advantage of the seafood coming into the Panama City Marina just blocks away. A caught-that-day pan-seared snapper treated to lemon-caper butter sauce or shrimp linguini studded with fresh zucchini, tomato and basil can only be improved when put to bed with a stunning tiramisu. With several locations scattered across the Emerald Coast, Amavida Coffee St. Andrews Café is a free-trade coffee roaster that takes its social responsibility to sustainable agriculture and fair trade as seriously as it does making excellent coffee – and that’s saying a lot. For a light breakfast or late morning snack, Amavida can also sate you with a small but delicious sampling of fresh pastries, such as an airy chocolate-filled croissant or a muffin simply bursting with blueberry sweetness. | 2997 W. 10th St.   HARRISON AVENUE The best way to get to Harrison Avenue is via the scenic route through St. Andrews, then along the bay on West Beach Drive before heading up from the south end of Harrison Avenue.

This one might require you to consult your navigation system to find, but it is more than well worth the effort. Wine Knot Tapas, tucked in a corner of a neighborhood bordering downtown, is one of those places you just have to experience to believe. Owned and operated by a Spaniard, Wine Knot offers an incredible by-the-glass wine program to accompany perfectly executed, authentic Spanish tapas, such as datiles con jamon and scallop con chorizo. The wine list heavily favors Iberian varieties, as well as New World wines influenced by Spanish wine, so that it perfectly complements the fare, but a perennial favorite is its own recipe of Sangria. If you want to work up an appetite or off the calories, come before or after for one of the authentic dance classes at the studio next door and learn the Fandango. | 241 Ruth Hentz Ave. Perched right on the edge of Massalina Bayou (in fact, the covered red deck hovers just over the surface of the water) just a few minutes from Harrison Avenue, Bayou Joe’s is as authentic Old Florida as you can get. Joe’s has served generations of watermen and workers getting off the late shift from the paper mill and shipyard, which is why it is still the only the place in Panama City still serving a full breakfast menu round-theclock. Being embraced by a small marina, it’s also not unusual for the boats to come in four abreast, with in-the-know sailors simply stepping from boat deck to boat deck to get to Joe’s to belly up to a frosty mug or a signature drinks – not to mention a basket of fried fresh shrimp, oysters or grouper accompanied by some fries and hushpuppies. | 112A East 3rd Ct. After visiting Nashville, Crook and Vicki Stewart were struck by the local music scene. Inspired by their experience there, they fostered a dream to create a local music corridor in Panama City. That dream became a reality when they launched Music Matters and lodged it in a bricksand-mortar venue, Ghetto Palace, which provides a hospitable stage for budding music acts behind the façade of an unassuming two-story cinderblock house. This is as far afield as you can imagine while still being within the confines of Panama City, so you’ll certainly want to map it. It’s well worth the adventure. | 3195 E. 5th St.

An Evening Under the Stars PANAMA CITY BEACH CHAMBER 2017 ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER

T

he Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce’s celebratory Annual Awards Dinner was truly a night of recognition as it honored six outstanding Beach Chamber members. On

Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort, the event was themed “An Evening Under the Stars.” The Beach Chamber would like to thank the Presenting Sponsor Noble Public Adjusting Group; the Premier Sponsor Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort; the Platinum Sponsors Visit Panama City Beach, Community Bank, and REEDS Jewelers; and the Photobooth Sponsors Beachy Beach Real Estate and Centennial Bank. accomplishments in the community and with the Beach Chamber. The Past Chairman’s Award was given to 2016 Chairman of the Board, Jayna Leach of Visit Panama City Beach, for her dedicated service and commitment to leading the Beach Chamber. This year’s Young Professional of the Year Award went to the Marketing Manager of Resort Collection, Catherine Collins. Catherine’s commitment to her role as a young professional in our community has made a difference to the Beach Chamber. This year’s Jean L. Schaffer Ambassador of the Year Award winner, Talena Grawburg of ServPro Bay County, is that and more. Whether it be attending ribbon cuttings and grand openings, or serving on many committees, she goes above and beyond for our chamber. She

COMMITTEE UPDATES | IDEACAMP

IDEACAMP INSPIRE. ENERGIZE . IGNITE BY KATELYN FRENCH

I

deaCamp kicked off with a great start to 2017 with our first event of the year located at Ripley’s Believe It of Not!. Guest speaker Dianne Horncastle with Your Next Best Step lead participants through the topic, “Your Vision—Believe It or Not,” covering the power of vision in both your personal and professional life. There is something about Arts & Crafts that, even as an adult, is therapeutic and just... fun. Our attendance proved that, with our January registration completely selling out. Over 80 participants filled the room and went through magazines, cut out inspiration, and glued it to their own personal Vision Boards to take home. Our February IdeaCamp was just as much of a success. Guest speaker Beverly Lewis built on January’s topic of setting vision and spoke about how to take the necessary steps to bring that vision to life. Our attendees also got to learn about the importance of an “elevator speech,” a topic we will build on for March IdeaCamp. We want to thank our presenting sponsor Southwest Airlines, and our additional supporting sponsors A Superior Air Conditioning, Beachy Beach Real Estate, Panama City Toyota, and ServPro of Bay County. We also want to thank our new media sponsor Powell Broadcasting for supporting and promoting our event on their stations! Our 2017 Committee is trying very hard to continue to build on each topic, creating more value for you and your business to grow with us by the end of year. Speaking of 2017 Committee, we have several new members who have joined our team and already have stepped up to leading IdeaCamp into success. Our 2017 Committee is as follows: Mike Calidonna, James Buell, Marta Rose-Thorpe, Maria Wilson, Talena Grawburg, and Katelyn French. Last year’s mission stood strong and remains the same this year: IdeaCamp is a “forum to inspire, energize, and ignite the community through sharing, connecting, and cultivating of open-minded discussions supporting the free flow of ideas. IdeaCamp creates an experience to learn, engage, and expand your life and your business.” That mission guides us as a committee, and we hope it does the same for you. CAPTION (top): Ripley’s! Believe It Or Not staff working hard We look forward to the best year yet. Come think with us! COMMITTEE UPDATES | AMBASSADORS

AMBASSADORS REPRESENT YOUR CHAMBER BY JEREMY HINTON

D

o you like meeting new people and finding new ways to grow your business? That is exactly what the Ambassadors Committee does. We work as an extension of the Chamber staff, but with one significant catch— they only let us do the fun stuff! Our Ambassadors welcome new members to the Chamber, attend ribboncutting and groundbreaking events, greet members at Chamber functions, and network with hundreds of successful people from all over our community. In the first 5 weeks of 2017, our committee participated in 12 events. Some of our Ambassadors make it to every event, some make it to a few events—but everyone has a good time. If you would like to join our committee, let us know at chamber@pcbeach.org, or by calling the Chamber at (850) 235-1159.

AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT: AERIAL PAYNE Aerial Payne is practically a Panama City native, having attended Lynn Haven Elementary, Mowat Middle School, and finally graduating from Mosley High School in 2010. After High School Aerial immediately went into employment for the United States Fish and Wildlife Commission as a field technician. There she worked throughout the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill that so greatly impacted our coastal community. Later, she went on to get her Real Estate license and now she is currently an Account Executive for PCB Entertainment, the producers of Pepsi Spring Jam and Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam, which is labeled as one of the top 10 country music festivals in the nation. She also currently attends Gulf Coast State College part time and is seeking her AA in Communication/Advertising/Public Relations. As a student she works very hard for her current 3.7 GPA and is currently on the Honors List at the college. She sponsors a little boy named Bramwell Kibiwott through the Christian Relief Fund, providing him with food, clothing, medical care, schooling, and Bible teachings. Aerial is active with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, is Chairperson of a Bay Business Connections group with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, a proud member of the Emerald Coast Business Women’s Association, and is a certified Precinct Election Official for the Bay County Supervisor of Elections Office. She enjoys soaking up sun here on the world’s most beautiful beaches, watching Alabama football, attending Braves games and being involved in the community.

BAY COUNTY BOARD OF PHILIP “GRIFF” GRIFFITTS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DISTRICT 5 Dining and entertainment options are abound in Panama City Beach and all of Bay County. The best seafood in the world is available just off our shores, and we boast some of the finest chefs around. Our beaches are beautiful and are an attraction on their own, but we also have some fantastic entertainment venues. This spring, locals and tourists alike can participate in any of a bevy of events aimed at helping us further our profile as a year-round tourist destination. In early March, Aaron Bessant Park hosted the Emerald Coast Boat and Lifestyle Show featuring the latest boats, high-tech engines, electronics, and marine accessories. March 8-11, the park will host Emerald Coast Cruizin’, a vintage and show-car expo with thousands of classic cars, hot rods, custom cars and trucks.

Park presented by the Bay County Tourist Development Council (TDC) and Garden & Gun magazine, featuring fare by distinguished chefs, wine and beer tasting, and a concert by Grammy-nominated American folkrock band The Avett Brothers. Late April will offer opportunities to visit the Seabreeze Jazz Festival, which has been recognized as a top destination for jazz enthusiasts. The Pepsi SpringJam Music Festival will be April 28-29 at Aaron Bessant Park, with a full musical lineup all weekend and headliners Sheryl Crow and Darius Rucker. In May, Thunder Beach, the Gulf Coast Iron Man and the Jeep Beach Jam are just a few of the events aimed at drawing locals and tourists. In addition to these events, the work the TDC is doing at the new sports park on the eastern side of the beach will further enhance our already robust sports marketing programs. These new events and facilities will help further portray Bay County as a year-round tourist destination, and I look forward to continuing to work toward making our county a toprated location.

UNwineD, on March 24-25, is a Southern garden party at Aaron Bessant

FLORIDA FILM JULIE GORDON OFFICE, INC. FILM COMMISSIONER Home and Garden Television (HGTV) is showing the Panhandle a whole lot of love, showing another Beachfront Bargain Hunt throughout Bay County, covering it from end to end. This episode aired rapidly after the filming, and showed Panama City Beach and Panama City’s finest beachfront bargains. But wait! HGTV sent another team back to paradise in early January with yet another new show. This one is called Beach Hunt, which features gorgeous homes on the water. This new show has a little different format and the buyers are more engaged in the community, so the area gets a nice showcasing along with the homes. While I can’t give away any secrets, I can say that the final reveal scene, or the decision making scene, was shot at Runaway Island. What gracious hosts, and even finer patrons, as they all gathered around watching the TV magic take place before their very eyes. Sweet Beach Renovations, HGTV, also wrapped up their first season and will be looking for more. The show is similar to other fix-up shows, but focuses on the Gulf Coast region, shooting the first episode in Panama City Beach’s West End.

Agency 850 Entertainment has wrapped up the filming of their first season of Insurance Wars and is now opting for another 26 episodes! This is a whole new type of show, with a Public Adjuster group standing up for homeowners when they have damage to their domiciles. Check the Insurance Wars Facebook page for local listings. It is on FOX and the CW. Stay tuned, AND if you need help with a claim, there are opportunities to participate in the show. Great job getting this on television! Congrats to the talent and crew who made the cut for several projects that filmed just over the Bay County border line. Chico’s and Macy’s shot print ads with minimal video for retailers’ usage, and paid big bucks for models and crew. You may have heard rumblings about a major music video which also shot in the Panhandle. Florida Georgia Line and Back Street Boys combined their talent for their new song, “God, My Mama, and Me.” While this was literally a painful 18 hour day shoot, many more man hours went into this project. Key positions were hired which is not typical, so we are grateful for that. Everybody did a super job, and I feel that we can count on more work from this popular production company from Nashville. You can reach the Film Office at floridafilmoffice@knology.net or (850) 819-4694. See you in the movies! floridarfilmofficeinc.com

GULF COAST DR. JOHN HOLDNAK STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT At Gulf Coast State College, we are committed to provide not only the highest quality educational programs, but also the best value in education– period. How do we accomplish this? By keeping college affordable and within reach for everyone in the communities we serve across Northwest Florida. One of the best ways we’ve achieved this is by keeping tuition in check. Our tuition has remained the same for the last five years with no increases. We are proud to say that GCSC has the #1 lowest tuition and fees for residents out of Florida’s 40 public colleges and universities. This is a major benefit for students who choose to attend Gulf Coast regardless of their major or degree program. Tackling the “textbook affordability issue,” our faculty and staff are doing their part in helping keep costs down for students. For many years, the college bookstore has offered textbook rentals while some professors are exploring other inexpensive avenues. For example, our Language & Literature Division replaced the ENC 1101 English Composition book with a free, open source text published by the State University of New York System. With the previous book costing $60, current ENC 1101 students saved over $77,000 in the first year alone. In our Mathematics Division, two faculty members wrote textbooks for two general education courses,

MAC 1140 Pre-Calculus Algebra and MAC 1114 Trigonometry. With an average book cost of $177 using the previous text, our students saved over $40,000 in the first year alone and even more in subsequent years. Based on this success, other instructors are working on new textbooks and the savings will continue to increase as more affordable options are created and expanded upon. Lastly, the College is creating a new event designed specifically for those who may have credits from “for-profit” colleges or institutions that have closed in recent years, like ITT. The event is called “TransferNow!” and will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Advanced Technology Center. It’s the perfect opportunity to find out if the credits you’ve already earned from another school will transfer to GCSC. Experts in admissions, advising, and academic programs will be able to evaluate your transcript on the spot– just bring “official” hand carried transcripts to expedite the process. “TransferNow!” is open to anyone, and we’ll also host a second one in June specifically for active military, veterans, and their spouses. To make it even easier, you can also contact the Admissions Office and make an appointment at your convenience (850.769.1551 ext. 4888). When you look at everything Gulf Coast State College has to offer, we are by far the best value in Florida–maybe in the country– and we promise to do everything we can to keep it that way.

BAY ECONOMIC BECCA HARDIN DEVELOPMENT ALLIANCE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Every two years, Development Counsellors International honors young professionals from across the globe for exceptional contributions to the economic development industry and to recognize the profession’s rising stars. This year, two professionals from Panama City were selected to join the elite “40 Under 40” Class of 2017 for their outstanding achievements, experience, innovation and track record to the community and profession. Among the 40 young professionals honored was our own Vice President Scarlett Phaneuf, chosen as among the “new breed of results-driven place makers in the economic development world.” A young leader who “isn’t afraid to disrupt industry standards and raise the bar for achieving community prosperity,” Phaneuf has served as the vice president of Bay EDA for the past four years. At only 32 years old, she said she feels most successful when helping the community become successful, and is extremely humbled and honored to be a recipient of the award. “We have to remind ourselves that economic development is not a sprint but a marathon,” she said. “We are successful when helping to locate a

66

THE CIRCUIT March / April 2017

company that is creating new jobs that impact our neighbors, family and friends for generations to come. That’s why I get up and do this job every single day.” As a volunteer member of various boards and committees across Northwest Florida, such as CareerSource Gulf Coast and Florida’s Great Northwest, Phaneuf knows it takes a lot of people working together to help grow the region’s economy. Bay County’s economic development, she said, is very promising. “We are seeing the seeds that we’ve been planting for years finally come to fruition, and the overall state of the local, state and national economy is breeding tremendous activity for us,” Phaneuf said. “Gulf Power and other groups and agencies are critical and valued partners in economic development in not only Bay County, but in the entire Northwest Florida region.” Phaneuf represents a bright future for the economic development world and I am honored to have her on our Bay EDA team. Scarlett is a true professional, focused on what it takes to help create jobs in our region. The “40 Under 40” awards are the only awards of its kind recognizing young talent in the economic development profession. An independent six-member selection committee evaluated and chose the winners based on their exceptional contributions to the economic development industry. The award’s program is managed by Development Counsellors International (DCI), a New York-based firm that specializes in economic development marketing.

FSU DR. RANDY HANNA PANAMA CITY INTERIM DEAN It is an exciting time at FSU Panama City, and I feel an enhanced level of energy from our faculty, staff, and students. Starting the new calendar year with our Welcome Back Symposium, faculty and staff heard from Provost Sally McRorie, learned about new initiatives, and honored staff members and community leaders for their contributions. This semester also brought a number of new faces to the university, including some existing faculty taking on new duties, such as Dr. Amy Polick accepting the position as interim associate dean for academic affairs. As we look to grow enrollment and to meet the needs of our region and community, several things will be critical. First, we must offer more programs that our students want and need. We are developing new undergraduate and graduate degree programs that would be natural fits for this community and are designed to foster creativity and professionalism for future business leaders. In addition, we will be working hard to enhance student activities. In January, our first flag football team competed in the NIRSA National Flag Football tournament. Although we didn’t come home with a

championship win, players said the experience made them feel like collegiate athletes. To create a more diverse campus life, I have asked Student Affairs to roll out more student activities, from club sports to Brain Bowl and robotics. We also will continue to enhance the learning experience to deliver a quality educational experience. Our faculty, staff and administration have been working tirelessly to ensure FSU Panama City fosters engaged learning for all current and future students. FSU Panama City is dedicated to creating a supportive, experiential, and challenging environment designed to maximize learning and cultivate student success. We are committed to providing the tools, services, and real-world experiences to help students excel in the classroom and beyond. Through undergraduate research, community service, internships or job shadowing, our students will be prepared to have a greater impact in their communities, achieve their career goals, and look forward to a life of purpose after graduation. Our students will have the opportunities to create their own academic path, with one-on-one guidance from our faculty and advisors every step of the way, making this truly “the FSU that fits you.”

CONVENTION & DAN ROWE VISITOR’S BUREAU PRESIDENT & CEO As Panama City Beach ushers in a new era in spring visitation, it’s fitting to celebrate “Dining and Entertainment” in the pages of The Circuit magazine. Not only does spring weather call for celebration, but never before has there been so many fun activities and festivals coming to Panama City Beach.

celebrating its 19th year) and the Pepsi Spring Jam (headliners Sheryl Crow and Darius Rucker take the stage in the event’s 2nd year), the spring air will be alive with music and fun in 2017. We’re particularly excited about our partnership with Garden & Gun magazine to move UNwineD to the spring and make it extra special – we’re even offering the chance to see the Grammy-nominated band The Avett Brothers for only $10 as part of UNwineD’s lineup of activities (Other shows at their tour start around $45.).

Over the past 5 years, visitation to Panama City Beach has doubled in the fall, thanks in large part to a focus on fall events that give our friends more and more reasons to come visit, have a great time, and help keep our local economy strong through the shoulder season. Now we are bringing that same strategy of events-based entertainment to bear on the spring season, with the goal of letting families and adults who are free to travel during those times know that there could be no better destination for springtime fun than Panama City Beach.

We’re helping spread the word of Panama City Beach’s brand new spring with a ramped-up marketing campaign that will allow us to digitally match our ads to the perfect demographic, helping get our message out more efficiently and effectively, and we hope you will join us in spreading the good news, helping increase tourism, and safeguarding the $1.5 billion in direct spending that it brings to our local economy every year.

With brand new events and events hosted for the first time in spring – like the Emerald Coast Boat & Lifestyle Show, UNwineD, Emerald Coast Cruizin’ – joining popular events like the Seabreeze Jazz Festival (now WWW.PCBEACH.ORG
