This has always been my favorite time of the year—the weather is

brisk and cool, and you can feel a special kind of energy in the air. Soon I will be spending time bundled up in cozy sweaters around the

bonfire with the family, eating delicious food at family gatherings, and decorating for Christmas with the kids. Sometimes it's just the small things.

The holidays are about togetherness and setting aside our differences—families, friends, and communities alike. As we end

2021, my wish for everyone is to focus on what we are thankful for. Be thankful for the beautiful beaches we live on and our incredible ability to bounce back and come together as a community. Be

thankful that your business is doing well and that you have excellent

health. Be thankful for your friends, family, and those that stood by your side through hardships and struggles. More importantly, be

thankful for the strength those hardships gave you!

I wish you and your families a

blessed holiday season and a new

year that promises an abundance

of great health and prosperity—

another year for which to be thankful.

NAVY AWARDS 19 ROBOTICS GRANTS TO 15 BAY COUNTY SCHOOLS

T

BY KATHERINE MAPP, NSWC PCD PUBLIC AFFAIRS

he Navy Lab in Panama City recently facilitated the award of 19 robotics grants to 15 Bay County Schools in the District.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) partnered with the Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to facilitate the award of robotics grants to schools that are taking part in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League robotics program this academic year. To foster a culture of innovation and collaboration, NSWC PCD provides mentors and coaches to support each team as they prepare to compete in the District competition in January 2022. Chris Voorheis, STEM outreach coordinator at NSWC PCD, said providing this opportunity to the schools increases and encourages STEM education at all levels. “Awarding these FIRST grants has a profound impact because it allows us to expand the Navy Lab’s K-12 STEM enrichment into rural and underserved areas of Bay County, teaching concepts like automation, computer science, and robotics,” said Voorheis. “The mission of our STEM Outreach Program is to enrich STEM education

18

THE CIRCUIT | November/December 2021

across Northwest Florida by increasing hands-on STEM experiences, partnering with DoD STEM and FIRST allows us to accomplish this. Directly supporting these types of initiatives also ensures the Navy Lab remains a model organization and a future employer of choice for our local students.” Kelley Hodges, STEM teacher at Patronis Elementary School, said students in K-12 science are expected to develop many skills throughout their education, including process skills, such as observation, predicting, experimenting, and communicating. With these skills, they are expected to become problem solvers and people who can identify solutions to complex problems through the use of STEM principles. “The FIRST Lego League grants provided through DoD STEM give teachers and students robots and curriculum that support students as they learn new skills, such as coding, and as they develop their ability to identify problems and develop meaningful solutions,” said Hodges. “Perhaps the most valuable tool for teachers is a component embedded within the FIRST Lego League mission, which is to encourage students to be inclusive, to collaborate, and to communicate through teamwork and gracious professionalism. These skills are at the heart of STEM education and something students will

A I R & S E A | naval surface warfare center panama city division

take with them into their adult years.” Hodges said she and her students are excited to put the grants into action through STEM learning. “I was thrilled to receive a DoD STEM grant and so excited for our students. Knowing that I can bring quality STEM education to my students is a great feeling,” said Hodges. “Our students love having the opportunity to design, create, and innovate and they especially love working together to learn about robotics and coding. Teaching STEM is one of the most rewarding parts of my job; it is a window into how students think, create, and learn. Grants like this allow teachers, like me, to bring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to students from every background.” The grants encourage and promote an interest of STEM education from an early age to develop the STEM professionals of tomorrow. “The DoD STEM FIRST Robotics Grants allow DoD to provide meaningful STEM learning opportunities for students and educators in PreK–12, while also increasing awareness about DoD STEM education and workforce development programs, activities and outreach,” said Director of DoD STEM Louie Lopez. “DoD STEM funding allows students, many of whom are military-connected or underrepresented in STEM fields, to participate in exemplary FIRST® programs, which include FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Robotics Competition. The grants also provide ways for the DoD workforce— educators, scientists, engineers, and other STEM professionals—to meaningfully engage with students, parents, teachers, and the public

in STEM initiatives. In partnership with FIRST, current DoD workforce members coach and mentor robotics teams near DoD laboratories and facilities across the nation and world.” Since 2009, DoD STEM sponsorship has grown from 49 teams to more than 1,600 teams annually, covering the nation, ten foreign countries, and two U.S. territories. For the 2021–2022 season, 1,644 teams were awarded funds for season registration. The DoD STEM Robotics Grants are administered through the Defense STEM Education Consortium, which itself is a program of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. “We are proud to support FIRST Robotics and promote opportunities for military-connected teams and students,” said Lopez. Voorheis added this year, he has seen local participation in the FIRST Robotics program nearly double. To learn more about FIRST and other DoD STEM programs and opportunities, visit dodstem.us.

Holiday Season Tips by

A

s a Registered Dietitian (RD), I often hear clients

regretting choices and weight gain during the holiday season, leading to less than positive memories of this

intended joyful time usually followed by unhealthy or unsafe diets.

This doesn’t have to be the case. Always seek the advice of an RD,

a nutrition expert, for diet advice — especially if you have medical conditions.

The holidays are a time full of fun, family, gatherings, and typically

food goes hand in hand with that. The holidays can also be a time of increased stress and routine disruptions. The key is expecting these

things in advance (the holidays come around every year, guys) and having a plan to handle it. It does not have to be an “all or nothing” or “off/on the wagon” during this time. Allow yourself some grace and flexibility.

Research shows that Americans on average gain one to two pounds during the holiday season and while that does not seem like

are readily available for you and your family. The holidays do not

have to derail healthy habits that you have been building. Rather than accepting it as inevitable to gain weight during the holidays, take some time to focus on preventing it.

Here are some tips to help you eat healthier and move more while still enjoying yourself during the holidays.

nutrient quality foods and drinks. This abundance of higher calorie/ sugary foods and drinks are often available at holiday events. Include

lots of fiber in your diet throughout the day by eating whole fruits (berries are an excellent choice), vegetables, and whole grains to fill you up on wholesome choices. Make sure to have a balanced dinner

before an evening outing. Plan your meals in advance around activities

that you have on your calendar. Make use of a healthy meal service to save time and ensure that you have healthy meals available. While out

at holiday events, eat slowly, savor the flavors and enjoy conversations!

Make a Simple Swap. Swap There are many easy recipe substitutions that can improve the

nutritional content of your favorite holiday recipes without sacrificing flavor.

USE UNSWEETENED APPLESAUCE INSTEAD OF OIL WHEN BAKING. USE LOW-FAT MILK OR NONDAIRY MILK, SUCH AS ALMOND MILK, INSTEAD OF WHOLE MILK. USE WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR FOR 1/3 - 1/2 OF WHAT THE RECIPE CALLS FOR. USE EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL INSTEAD OF BUTTER IN SAVORY RECIPES.

Beware of Liquid Calories. Calories Alcohol-based drinks, eggnog, pumpkin spice lattes, or other popular

holiday drinks may taste great and go down easy but typically carry A LOT of calories, mostly in the form of sugar (therefore no nutritional value). Choose a smaller size, limit how much you consume, and also

Bring a Healthy Dish. Dish Often, holiday events request attendees to bring a dish to share. Take this opportunity to make and bring a healthier option. Not only will

you know that you have a healthy food choice for yourself at the party, but you will also be able to provide a healthy option for friends and

family to enjoy and benefit from. Take this opportunity to try recipe substitutions in an old favorite recipe or make a healthy one that you

want to try out. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Look for recipes that are vegetable-based and don’t be shy with adding more veggies than the

recipe calls for. This will add nutrients, fiber, flavor, and often color to your dish!

Don't Forget to Exercise. Exercise Continue to make exercise a priority. Have it on your calendar like you have all the festivities that you plan to attend. This can turn the “I’m too busy to workout” mindset during the holidays into a more positive one, such as “I am keeping myself healthy during the holidays.” Even if

Maple Walnut Twice

Baked Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients • • • • •

4 small sweet potatoes 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or sour cream 1/2 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice 1 tablespoon maple syrup 3-4 tablespoons brown sugar or more to taste; can also be left out for a less sweet dish • pinch of salt Topping: • 2/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoon light brown sugar

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Pierce the potatoes with a fork, place in a large baking pan and bake until soft (time will vary depending on the size of your sweet potatoes, anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes). 2. Cut each potato in half lengthwise. Scoop out the baked insides. Try to keep the skins whole as much as possible! 3. Place the potato skins back in the baking pan. Mash the baked potato flesh in a bowl until smooth. Mix in the Greek yogurt, pumpkin pie spice, maple syrup (and brown sugar, if using) and salt. Scoop this filling into the sweet potato skins (I get 6 skins out of 4 baked potatoes). 4. In a separate bowl, mix all topping ingredient. Sprinkle over the filled sweet potato skins. Bake at 400°F for 1215 minutes. 5. Drizzle with extra syrup to serve, if you like, and serve hot. Recipe from savorynothings.com

Sprinkle with a light layer of salt, pepper, and garlic powder, based on taste preference. 5. Roast at 400 F for 25 minutes on the center rack. 6. At the 25-minute mark, pull out the oven rack and add your fresh cranberries to the roasting pan. 7. Return to the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cranberries have started to soften and burst a bit, resembling juicy craisins vs. fresh firm cranberries. 8. Remove from oven and add a sprinkle of cinnamon (approx. 1/8-1/4 tsp depending on preference) along with feta and honey. Sweeten to taste depending on whether you used fresh cranberries or dried. Whipped Pumpkin Honey Butter

Ingredients • • • • • •

1 cup salted butter, 2 sticks, softened ¾ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 6 tablespoons pumpkin puree 5 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon vanilla

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Whip the softened butter, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and 1 tablespoon of the pumpkin puree. 2. Gradually add the rest of the pumpkin puree as you continue to whip the butter. 3. Add the honey and vanilla and continue beating (1-2 minutes) until thick and fluffy. 4. Scoop into a container for easy serving, or place in a piping bag and pipe it into a glass jar or other container. 5. Serve at room temperature with a drizzle of honey over the top, if desired. Notes: • This butter should be stored in the refrigerator until ready to use. • Make sure you are using pumpkin puree and NOT pumpkin pie filling. They are not the same thing and are not interchangeable. • This may be re-whipped. It will take a couple of minutes to achieve the correct consistency. Don't give up if it begins looking grainy and separated. Keep whipping until smooth and creamy. Recipe from delish.com

Holly Fair is one of League's biggest annual fundraisers, bringing in about $75,000 to support the Junior League's various programs. From committing 5,000 volunteer hours to providing $25,000 in scholarships to local teachers, the service organization has remained a constant positive force in Bay County for the past three decades—raising about $3 million overall. Founded in 1951, the Junior League of Panama City is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Ask the Doctor brought to you by

COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE THOUGHTS, UPDATES & RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE FRONT LINE

A

BY D R . H U Y B N G U Y E N , M . D .

s a physician who has worked in the ER for more than 20 years and within the past year also as an administrator/ CEO of Doctors Memorial Hospital (DMH) in Bonifay, I have been asked by friends and acquaintances about my thoughts on this Pandemic. In this article, I will share my observations as a clinician and administrator. I will also present some basic information that will hopefully provide insight in balancing public health and civil liberties. Covid-19 cases will continue to emerge and issues such as vaccination and the treatment of ‘long haulers’ will confront our country for years to come – we are only in the 4th inning of a 9-inning game. Finally, I will provide updates and personal recommendations. The views in this article are my own and not those of the institutions that I am honored to work for.

Here in Florida, the surge in cases from mid-July to early October was the toughest period of my career, both in terms of the severity and volume of cases. It was particularly severe for rural hospitals where the sickest patients are generally transferred to larger hospitals, but for a few weeks, every hospital was full and would not accept transfers. In normal times, DMH can go months without experiencing a death, so averaging more than one death per week was tough. The volume of cases in this surge was also more than the two previous surges. Here are some other highlights that the public may have not been aware of:

One public health blunder has been the lack of basic education concerning the coronavirus. We have so quickly jumped to debating mask and vaccine mandates that we have simply skipped explaining the basics. I wished that there were less clips of Dr. Fauci and more of those Saturday morning cartoons that could explain the virus and pandemic in easy-to-understand terms.

• There was and is a shortage of nurses, respiratory techs, etc. It was common for hospital staff to work 60+ hours. Hospitals resorted to paying exorbitant fees to staffing companies that often-recruited personnel from one Florida hospital to then ‘rent’ them to another. Talk about ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul.’

• Covid-19 is one variant within a family of viruses (Coronaviruses) that has been long known. Four of the variants are often the cause of the common cold, while Covid-19 is one of three other variants that cause more severe illnesses. Like many physicians, I have often attributed a runny nose to “oh, it just the coronavirus.” The public never fully appreciated that the coronavirus family is well known and not some strange, new disease. • Among those three variants, Covid-19 is generally much more contagious but less likely to cause severe illnesses. This is why it is so hard for folks to conceptualize the duality that this virus can cause such misery in a small subsection of people while simultaneously be so benign to the vast majority of people. In our polarized ‘red or blue’ culture, it was tough to take a nuanced view of this ‘grey zone’ virus – we should mask up to minimize risk to a small subset of people while not overreacting like shutting down our economy and inadvertently hurting a wide of swath of our society. 46

THE CIRCUIT | November/December 2021

• Florida hospitals came close to running out of oxygen because of the enormous demand.

I would be remiss to discuss the surge without commending some of the benchmarks achieved at Doctors Memorial: • Though DMH is small with only 20 beds, we had reinstituted a four-bed intensive care unit prior to the Pandemic. During the surge, we actually accepted transfers from nearby hospitals which was and is unusual for a rural hospital. • We were the first hospital in the region to do ‘drive by’ testing regardless of symptoms. • One of the most effective treatments for those infected was the Regen-Cov monoclonal antibody therapy. We were the first and only hospital to augment ‘drive by’ testing with Regen-Cov subcutaneous injections for positive patients. This model allowed us to provide more treatment without clogging up the hospital. Our model was alluded to by Governor DeSantis at his press conference in Panama City when he announced the

A S K T H E D O C T O R | (continued) rollout of ‘drive by’ Regen-Cov injection centers throughout the State. Overall, we have provided more than 1500+ Regen-Cov injections, which I am convinced saved hundreds of lives. • In spite of the additional burden of Covid patients, we never shut down elective surgeries or any other critical services to nonCovid patients. At DMH, we view patients not as sick people but as valued customers, and that ethos is reflected in the fact that our Google reviews jumped from 2.7 to 4.0 during the Pandemic. The good news is that surge has dissipated dramatically. So where do we go from here? Here are some thoughts and recommendations from my vantage point: • More than 6 billion doses of Covid vaccines have been administered globally with minimal evidence of harm. Regardless of vaccine skepticism, the global vaccination drive has been logistically a success. • Clinically, vaccines are effective at minimizing hospitalization and deaths, as reflected in the fact that approximately 95% of the people hospitalized or died were unvaccinated. This data correlates with the percentage of unvaccinated patients admitted to DMH. Though vaccines may not completely prevent breakthrough infections, they are highly effective at minimizing serious illness. • In the US, the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are significant scientific achievements, and the underlying science of those vaccines will be utilized to help us combat a wide variety of diseases, including cancer, in the future. The best is yet to come! • The vaccination rate in our region is well below the national average, but I do not believe that we will have another massive surge. Between vaccinated people and those infected (natural immunity), we are probably at herd immunity. Support for this is that we have not seen a spike in cases though there have been plenty of fully-packed football stadiums. I believe that we will transition from a Pandemic to an Endemic state where infections will percolate but not overwhelm our healthcare system.

It was particularly sad to see people die because they came in too late for treatment. • Just as I am passionate about the vaccine, I am equally passionate against a vaccine mandate. We already have a labor shortage, especially in healthcare, that this will further exacerbate. We can now measure antibody levels against Covid-19, which would identify those with natural immunity. There is significant evidence that natural immunity is just as durable as vaccine-mediated immunity. Why would we force these people out of the workforce when they are, in essence, immunized? I personally know a very qualified physician who would rather quit his job than take the vaccine. I disagree with him about the vaccine but losing a physician of his caliber is a significant loss. Finally, considering the significant drop in Covid, this mandate may be an unnecessary fight. The evolving data and science underlying the Pandemic logistically create differences of opinion. The opinions in this article are purely my own. However, I do feel strongly that the debates garnered during this period have been dominated by the policymakers and politicians while those of us on the ‘frontline’ are left to grapple with the ‘known unknowns.’ To my fellow frontline clinicians, we need to more actively participate in the discussions in order to ensure that public policies translate to the reality on the ground. I hope that good old-fashion American pragmatism is not one of the casualties of this Pandemic.

About the Doctor

• For those wondering about taking the booster shot, my answer is a resounding yes for those over 65 or adults with underlying conditions! • For those who have been infected, I would still advocate taking the vaccine if you have not been vaccinated or the booster if you have been vaccinated and meet the above criteria. • For those who have not had Covid, I recommend that you have your antibody for Covid levels measured. If you do not have detectable antibodies, I would highly recommend taking the vaccine. • Regardless symptoms, you to get now have

of vaccine status, if you develop respiratory fever, fatigue, and/or intestinal symptoms, I urge tested for Covid as soon as possible because we early therapy that can mitigate serious illness.

30A TV Are you overlooking Streaming TV?

Streaming TV is replacing cable and Satellite – and fast! What is it? Streaming TV is the method used to get television, movies, and video via the internet in place of a cable service. Typically, a device is plugged into an existing TV, or the newer Smart tv's have the connection inside the box. The most popular devices are ROKU, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV. Over 200 million people now use streaming TV versus 80 million still clinging to cable. "Cord Cutting" as it is known, is here to stay, and the "Bigs" are seeing the light, and shifting how their programming is delivered to the consumer. Making the switch to streaming TV can be seamless once you have found where your favorite channels and movies are streaming from.

What does this mean to the business owner?

Like anything, being in at the beginning can be huge. Television changed marketing forever, just as social media, smartphones are changing our modern promotional campaigns. As trends develop, the price to participate increases. Streaming TV advertising is in its infancy, and the pricing to target massive audiences is also at the beginning – making it UNDERVALUED. Key differences in video delivery are also identifying changes, the ability to target your ideal customer, in the town or state they live in, has never been more available. No more Nielsen ratings to determine the price for tv ads. Now your budget can target 100% of the income levels, interests, and age groups you want to reach. Embrace the stream -- it will pay dividends for a long time to come. Paul Vizard is an experienced broadcaster, video producer, director, and marketer. Paul is the owner of 30A Media, and 30A TV a video production, streaming TV developer and distributor. He leans on his years of experience with influencer youtubers and podcasters to develop strategies and build systems for broadcast. TRANQUILITY MANOR BIRD RESCUE & SANCTUARY Tranquility Manor Bird Rescue provides a safe haven for all birds. We get all new arrivals vetted by Dr. Kim Breeze at Breeze Animal Hospital so we can properly care for any issues each bird may need. Proper diet and nutrition is paramount to their health and wellness. We fill every bird's days with love, human interaction, toys, and a clean environment so they can thrive. Since our article in PCB news and the spot on Channel 7 news, we are receiving new residents weekly. We have found a property that fits our needs, and now we need help with donations to build the outdoor aviaries for all of these babies. Our goal is to have a place for them to enjoy being outside so they are able to fly in a safe environment, letting birds be birds. Our goal is $12,000. Donations of materials would also be great in helping with this endeavor. Rolls of stainless-steel mesh, misters, foraging toys are in great need. To make a donation or for more information, you can go to facebook.com/TranquilityManor, email James Talley at tranquilitymanorbirdrescue@yahoo.com, or call (850) 238-0675. Chief Academic Officer, GULF COAST STATE COLLEGE

G

ulf Coast State College is the community’s College. This has been a common phrase since I started teaching at Gulf Coast Community College in 1998, and I’m proud to say that it still holds true today. As our mission states, the College is dedicated to ensuring that students and community are of central importance while striving to help students become well-educated, productive citizens. In looking toward the holidays, this is a time of year where people celebrate and give thanks for the past year’s accomplishments, as well as look to opportunities for growth as the upcoming year approaches. As we reflect on the past year, we see a year of exciting changes for Gulf Coast State College, with the wellbeing of our students as paramount. We also give thanks to all of our stakeholders for making these great endeavors a success.

With the idea in mind that finances should never be a reason to forego education, Gulf Coast State College’s Foundation began a program called The Gulf Coast Guarantee, which guarantees a $1,400 per year financial aid award to current Bay, Gulf, and Franklin County high school graduates. These students must enroll as full-time students in the Fall Semester following graduation. This program is proving to be an incredible opportunity for students who otherwise may not have had the chance to attend college. Our hope is that this

DR. RANDY HANNA

will reduce the financial barrier associated with college for families in our community. The College has always taken pride in being our community’s college and embracing a diverse culture of inclusion. In this spirit of diversity, we have recently partnered with the Culinary Institute at the Arc of the Bay to provide food services for the Panama City campus while training students in the culinary field. This opportunity allows those students graduating from the Arc of the Bay Culinary Institute to have an immediate job after graduation, as well as provide them with a real-world learning environment. Looking forward, we are excited to announce that construction of a new STEM building will provide our current and future students the

opportunity to learn from highly qualified faculty in a state-of-theart facility in 2023. The STEM building design is focused on student learning and real-world science education, including top-notch laboratories and space for collaboration between faculty members, current students, and community partners. As the holidays approach and 2021 nears the end, we hope you will join us in celebrating the culmination of milestones for Gulf Coast State College that work to ensure the well-being of our students – the very core of our being. As always, Gulf Coast is the community’s College.

F

lorida State University Panama City continues to meet students’ needs on its growing campus through scholarships, academic programs, and community partnerships. More full-time undergraduate students living in Northwest Florida recently became eligible to receive free tuition and fees through the FSU PC Promise Scholarship. The combined household adjusted gross income eligibility requirement was raised by $10,000 to $60,000 or less to help more students reach their goals of higher education. In October, FSU received a $1.3 million Talent Search grant to improve high school graduation and college enrollment rates for students at Title I schools in the Florida Panhandle, including Bay and Rutherford high schools. FSU’s Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement and FSU Panama City will use the funding to launch a pre-college program over a span of five years. In September, The Board of Triumph Gulf Coast, Inc. approved an $11.5 million grant to provide partial funding to FSU PC’s Advancing

Science and Career Education in New Technologies (ASCENT) project. This partnership is exciting not just for the University but for our regional workforce, as we work to develop a comprehensive approach to meet the demand for professionals in emerging technologies. With our military bases, as well as the growth in engineering and manufacturing across the area, it’s going to be critical that we have a trained workforce across Northwest Florida. We’ll be looking at continuing education, especially transferring and retired military, and those who are looking to enhance their career or interested in a second career. Funded over a six-year period, the ASCENT project is designed to meet the area’s workforce needs through education and training opportunities, with a focus on cybersecurity. The grant is expected to result in at least 3,280 industry-recognized certifications and credentials for students in the region. Through K-12 partnerships, the ASCENT project also aims to grow interest in emerging technologies among the area’s youth by providing support to career academies and summer camp programs. We’re proud of our accomplishments at FSU PC, and we look forward to the future! WWW.PCBEACH.ORG 63

s the holidays approach, I think we all try to stop and take the time we need to be thankful for our many blessings. This year, like many of you, I am so incredibly grateful for a return to a bit of “normalcy” in our lives. Unfortunately, I think we all have to understand that we’re never “going back to normal” because Covid-19 will continue to be a part of our lives going forward. It’s been a tumultuous first semester of the 2021-2022 school year, but we’re finally seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, I think (and I pray). So, in the spirit of being grateful, here’s what I am thankful for this holiday season: 1. I’m grateful for our students. Our students have been through SO MUCH since the storm, yet they keep coming to school with smiles on their faces, and they keep doing all they can to achieve their goals and dreams. 2. I’m grateful for the continued support of the families of our

more than 26,000 students in non-charter and charter schools. Our parents and guardians have been incredibly flexible, supportive, and encouraging through some very difficult times, and I am eternally grateful to all of them. 3. I’m grateful for the more than 3,000 dedicated, hard-working and passionate employees who have committed their lives to working with our children. For the past three years, these employees have overcome obstacle after obstacle with grace and compassion and I appreciate each and every one of them. Overall, I’m grateful to live in a community like Bay County that seems to have endless support for public education and for the opportunities that education provides for our children. Like so many of you, I am a proud graduate of our public school system. I know that my successes are due in large part to the incredible team of educators and coaches who invested their time and effort in me when I was a student and an athlete. I hope this holiday season brings you nothing but joy, rest, and relaxation, and I look forward to welcoming all of our families back after our Christmas Holidays for the rest of our 2021-2022 school year.

ay County received a welcomed award at the September 21st Commission meeting. James Blair, with Navigator Consulting, formally presented the award to Bay County and Bay Economic Development Alliance (Bay EDA) for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Certification. Now you may be asking yourself, why is FDI important and why do we need the FDI Certification? FDI supports almost 8 million U.S. workers, employs approximately 22 percent of America’s manufacturing workforce, and pays approximately 18 percent more than the average U.S. salary. Furthermore, almost 70 percent of new manufacturing jobs created in the United States over the past five years is a result of FDI. The FDI certification helps set the Bay County community, including the municipalities within, apart from other communities pursuing FDI. The FDI certification assures potential investors that Bay County has been vetted and has the necessary components to support their investment efforts. The FDI certification was born from a partnership between the Transatlantic Business & Investment Council and Navigator Consulting. Both firms work closely with European Companies

KIM BODINE

and have brought approximately $7.8B total investment and more the 14K new jobs to the U.S. economy in the past 12 years. The certification process for Bay County began in 2020, where the first order of business was to compile and submit an extensive data package to showcase the community. The data request was a spreadsheet with 10 tabs and hundreds of deliverables. It was the most extensive RFI we have ever received. The next order of business was a mock site visit, where representatives of each firm spent three days in our community evaluating numerous components such as available properties, education, workforce, leadership and quality of life, to name a few. We are proud to share that Bay County excelled in the certification, scoring the highest out of any community certified to date. Furthermore, Bay County is one of nine communities in the United States with the FDI seal of approval and the only community in the state of Florida. We couldn’t have achieved this certification without the support of our community partners, and for that, we are very fortunate and appreciative. For more information about the Bay Economic Development Alliance, please visit www. BayEDA.com or connect with us via Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Executive Director, CAREERSOURCE GULF COAST

I

t’s the time of year when we focus on family and look back on a year of experiences. While we have had unique challenges for nearly two years, compliments of a global pandemic, we still have much to be thankful for. We live in a community with a low unemployment rate and an abundance of jobs. We have some of the most affordable post-secondary training and education options in the state, and we have growth with rebuilding and new construction on seemingly every corner. We have beautiful natural resources and a great quality of life. While employers are still working hard to fill positions, we are starting to see more job seekers return to the labor market, and boy is it a jobseeker’s market! Honestly, there has never been a better time to look for a job. Jobseekers, many of whom are interested in new career fields, enter the market with a newfound perspective focused on finding careers that are fulfilling and consistent with their values. There is an increased desire for flexible work situations, a balanced work-home life, good benefits, and a path for career development. Jobseekers are also feeling confident enough to make major work and life changes. Just as we tend to reflect on the importance of our families during the holiday season, we here at CareerSource Gulf Coast encourage employers to consider their current and prospective employees as family, too. Job seekers’ ideas about work have changed with the

pandemic, and work options must also change, perhaps in ways that weren’t always fully explored in the past, in order to attract and retain talent. Florida’s Open for Business environment has brought confidence to businesses and job seekers as the economy continues to gain steam. While we are still catching up from pandemic-related supply chain issues, Florida has regained 77% of the 1.3 million jobs lost during the pandemic. Another promising sign is that we (locally and as a state) are experiencing an increase in business prospects due, in large part, to the business climate Florida has exhibited during the pandemic. We realize that there are still some lingering uncertainties in the labor market, and we encourage you to consider CareerSource Gulf Coast as a comprehensive employment resource. Whether you are a job seeker or employer, reach out to CareerSource Gulf Coast for its nofee services. We have 25 years of experience connecting employers and job seekers with a variety of resources. Services for jobseekers include job search assistance, training, career counseling, hiring events, resume/interviewing help, and labor market data. appy Holidays with lots of filming going on! That's the best gift to the production crews in this area. Road Kill is underway with several top names, included a popular SCREAM QUEEN! This feature film has been in preproduction most of 2021, getting locations, cast, and crew in place. Director Warren Fast of Finding Grace has switched gears into thriller mode, and there are more films to come from this creative mind. TLC is bringing another show to PCB, this time a spin-off of one of their popular family shows. The group will be engaging in a lot of fun activities including the Sky Wheel, shopping for airbrushed tees, banana boating, cruising the beach in a beautiful golf cart, and of course, enjoying great food and drinks at beachfront restaurants. Visit Florida has been showing Panama City Beach a lot of love and filmed at Goofy Golf with a family of 6-year old twin girls from Miami. They were super excited to see such an iconic attraction still in business since 1959! Earlier in the day, they had an adventure on a pontoon boat and saw sea life in its natural habitat.

Helicopter for a bird's-eye view of the World's Most Beautiful Beaches. Then they took jet skis and pontoon boats out for a romp in the bay with pods of dolphins. Nature did not disappoint on either of those film days. More friends from Canada came to film a documentary on cold cases from the 90s. Anytime we can have our UK3 network in town, we are happy to show them why we live in Paradise. Several other digital and industrial films took place, and we have to give great thanks to the Advanced Technology Center at Gulf Coast State College for their participation. More movies and television shows are coming in the new year so keep an eye open for us coming to your business. And as always, please contact the Film Office with any inquiries you get for filming. Productions need to provide a Certificate of Liability for ANY filming on your property. Also, there are strategic measures in place for COVID-19 safety which are important to follow. If you have any questions, please contact Film Commissioner Julie Gordon at floridafilmoffice@knology.net. See you in the Movies!

A Letter From Your Chamber Rep

A

s 2021 is winding down, we may find this time of the year is full of obligations, lists, and an extended social calendar. Typically, we create such a busy mess we have to fight for the simple joys. But right now, simple joy is all we want. Frankly, it is what we all need. Taking a break, having a good holiday sounds like the perfect way to reclaim this year! We can intentionally spread some holiday cheer and make it a little more wonderful for somebody. And if we can brighten one person’s day, maybe their smile can brighten one more. Plus, given the fact the quickest way to find happiness is to help someone else find theirs, intentionally spreading holiday cheer is the best way to find it ourselves. Here are a couple of ideas:

who drive or walk by are sure to get a smile when they see your outdoor decorations. 8. Go ahead, sing along. Whether in your car, in the office, or in the store, you know the songs. It’ll brighten your mood and almost certainly the mood of the person next to you as well. Even if singing isn’t your strongest talent, you can always hum along. Remember, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is by singing loud for all to hear! We probably can’t change the entire world with these simple ideas, but we can still intentionally seek to add cheer to the people around us. And just like that, another outstanding year at the Beach Chamber has come to a close. We want to thank each and every one of you for your part in making 2021 an excellent year for our Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce family and our community.

1. Buy coffee for a stranger. Next time you roll through the drivethru of your local coffee shop, offer to pay for the person behind you; this pleasant surprise is guaranteed to brighten someone’s day.

May your days be merry and bright!

2. Leave a nice tip. Most of the servers I know are working the shift just trying to make ends meet. An extra $20 added to their tip will certainly bring some extra holiday cheer—especially during a busy time of the year when they’d rather be home with their family.

3. Buy movie tickets for a family in your neighborhood. Know somebody on your block who has fallen into some difficult financial times? How about putting some movie gift cards in an envelope and leaving it on their doorstep? Time with family is always good and some holiday entertainment may be just the distraction they need to experience a little extra cheer. 4. Invite someone over for dinner. For any number of reasons, there are many people alone during the holidays. If you know someone alone this season, open your house to them for a meal. Rather than infringing on your holiday traditions, it may just become one of your favorites. 5. Send a gift of food/coffee. There are countless inexpensive, clutter-free gift ideas that can be shipped nearly anywhere in the world. 6. Donate spare change. When the holidays approach, the bells start ringing. On your way out the door, be sure to fill a pocket with spare change to contribute to a good cause. Your children will feel special being able to drop coins into collection jars, and you’ll bring a smile to the volunteers who are spending their holiday time ringing bells. 7. Decorate the house. Remember the feeling you had as a child when you saw houses lit up with Christmas lights and bright decorations? Share that cheerful feeling by decorating the outside of your house with festive lights. Neighbors or people WWW.PCBEACH.ORG 71
