s we all know, health and wellness has become a very pressing topic in our lives these past couple of years. This pandemic has completely changed the way many of us live, from our work to our learning to our social lives. Our new reality has posed a
unique set of challenges for some of us, and now more than ever, practicing self-care is essential for establishing a healthier state of well-being. We all read about health, learn about it through the Internet, television, radio, magazines, and we even ask Siri about it. But what does health mean to you? According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Most of us tend to think of health only in mental and physical form, yet there is so much more to it that we don't consider. Other critical dimensions of our health include social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, occupational, and financial health. We often find ourselves so wrapped up in our busy lives that some of these dimensions of wellness get tossed to the back burner and neglected. We have to find the time to nurture these other areas we tend to neglect so that we have a more balanced livestyle. What's on your back burner? One of my favorite quotes is, "A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there." We have to step outside of that zone if we want to achieve new health goals. Whatever ails you, I hope you find the strength and courage to step outside of yours. To better health and happiness!

“The majority of the beacons we receive are improper testing,” said Combs. She explained that when a beacon goes off and is located
on or near an airfield, the staff will contact the airfield to ensure the pilot is safe and accounted for. However, many distress beacons they receive are for just that – distress.

Scott Tibbetts, Air Force Rescue Coordination Center noncommissioned officer in charge of standards and events, watches a computer screen at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, Aug. 11, 2021. The AFRCC is the only rescue coordination center for the entire continental United States. They also work closely with Canada and Mexico to coordinate search and rescue assistance when needed. (Airman 1st Class Tiffany Price)
In 2020, mission activity consisted of 10,849 incidents that were
coordinated through the AFRCC. Of those incidents, 762 turned into missions and 349 lives were saved.
Although the AFRCC is a military organization, they work closely
with local first responders wherever there is an emergency. If those departments or agencies are out of options or lack capabilities, they put out a request to nearby military units for their support.
“A lot of times, when states call us asking for an aviation asset or
federal resources, they’ve already exhausted all of their state and local assets,” said Combs. “Say the emergency is in Colorado, on a 14,000
foot peak and someone’s broken a foot. We’ll reach out to each of the branches and whoever is the closest most capable asset based on the location may respond, in this case, the U.S. Army’s High Altitude Training Squadron.”
Though the mission of the AFRCC is to help coordinate SAR efforts,
there are multiple instances when the distress beacons, while giving off correct location information, are too late.
Tech. Sgt. Bret Talbott, AFRCC noncommissioned officer in charge of operations, explained one of the most difficult parts of the job is having to speak to family members who are desperately looking for
their loved ones and knowing the outcome is the worst case scenario. Locating missing persons, he said, comes with many emotional responses.
The 27 Airmen and civilians assigned to the AFRCC mission work
selflessly around the clock to bring comfort and closure to families around the country.
“The mission our Airmen do on a daily basis never ceases to amaze
me,” said Lt. Col. Matt Mustain, AFRCC commander. “Their tireless professionalism and dedication to the mission of rescuing and serving
civilians is rewarding, to say the least. They must think quickly, calmly
and get the right resource to the right place in minimum time to help
save a life. Knowing that you made a life-changing difference for someone, for someone’s family, on a daily basis is the best part of our job. I couldn’t ask for a better team.”
The dedication and expertise of these Airmen could mean the
difference between life and death and the 325th Fighter Wing is proud to host a unit so dedicated to serving their country.

Answers the Call
J
by Zandra Wolfgram / VRM Intel Magazine
amalo’s welcoming voice on the other end of the telephone brightened the cold January day. I was doing research about Resort Collection in Panama City Beach along Florida’s Gulf Coast. It didn’t seem to matter that he was 989 miles away in the heart of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Perhaps, because from his seat in the company’s overseas call center, he could see the town and the Caribbean Sea beyond. Maybe it was his seven years of hotel experience talking—or simply that he was happy. “It’s fun here,” he said. “The staff is really helpful, and I feel comfortable.” Jamalo is one of the 20 friendly solutions to one of Resort Collection’s biggest challenges: labor. “People go all over the world to get their labor,” says Paul Wohlford, 56, who joined Resort Collection in 2007 and is now its vice president of business development and a partial owner. “We’ve had a lot of success in Jamaica, where there are very friendly, good, hardworking people, and it’s relatively close.” Like many vacation rental businesses in Florida, Resort Collection has a successful track record working with the Jamaican government to bring in workers with H2B visas, largely for housekeeping positions that are difficult for seasonal resorts to keep filled. Just as Resort Collection struggled with housekeepers, it also struggled a few years ago to find and keep reservationists, even at an accelerated pay rate. Then in October 2018, another whammy came—Hurricane Michael. With most affordable housing wiped out and the hourly labor force scattered, a bad problem became worse. “Not having enough labor can lead to high abandonment rates, lower conversion percentages, and all those things we need to be successful,” Wohlford says. Robert Laltoo, a hospitality consultant based in Miami with 16 years of experience in 16
THE CIRCUIT | September/October 2021
supplying international labor to the U.S., had the answer for his client: Jamaica. As it turns out, Resort Collection would not be first by a long shot. According to the Business Processing Industry Association of Jamaica, there are 65 business process outsourcing (BPO) companies providing 36,100 jobs that generate $500 million in Jamaica alone. Most of these BPO companies are call centers. In January 2019, with Laltoo’s help, Resort Collection found office space to rent, met with the government, and migrated one supervisor and ten reservation agents to Montego Bay, Jamaica. “All of a sudden, we see our conversion rates growing dramatically from 20 to 45 percent and our abandoned calls shrinking dramatically, which is exactly what you want to have happen,” he says. “When I interview down there, I can get upwards of 40 applications for one job,” he says. “They line up; they’re professional, they interview well. They’re nice people, good people. It’s a profession for them that they take very seriously, so they take a lot of pride in it. I expect they’ll be with us for years.” Plus, the price is right. “I have to pay $15 an hour just to get somebody to sniff the job here. There, I pay $6 an hour including incentives, and they’re extremely well paid,” he says. By every measure, Wohlford counts it a success, saying, “I’m saving money. I’m converting more calls. I’m losing fewer calls from people hanging up. It’s a win on the savings side. It’s a win on the revenue side. It’s a win on the labor side. It’s a home run, to say the least.”
Currently, Wohlford is working on expanding his Jamaican call center business. Now, call volume is up in another way, meaning he’s already receiving calls from industry colleagues eager to join his win-win model. “It’s not about the wage. It’s just that people nowadays don’t want to do that work. I think the mindset needs to change. The mindset in Jamaica is right. Three of the five largest call centers in the world are in Jamaica. They wouldn’t be there if they weren’t successful,” Laltoo says. Jamaica’s “good thing” is poised to get even better (for them). Since the pandemic began, the call center industry in Jamaica has grown. Laltoo contends that with more industries allowing people to work remotely, American call centers could be further “diluted because now there are so many more industries where you can pick and choose what you want to do from home.” That demand for trained labor makes the Jamaican call center workforce even more attractive. “Technically, we now have a financial bidding war for these folks,” Laltoo says. Yet, despite Jamaica’s increasing popularity as a global BPO destination, the figures still pencil, or as Wohlford says, “The proof is in the numbers and the savings.” And in the guest experience. Especially so with pleasant reservation agents like Jamalo, who ended our call with, “It was a pleasure speaking with you. Please enjoy the rest of your day.”

A Few Minutes with Joe Laymon O N
the PC Beach
Rodeo b y
T
he 2021 PC Beach Fishing Rodeo, hosted by Capt. Anderson's Marina – Bay County's largest and oldest privately-owned marina – takes place from September 24 to October 10, 2021. Not since the Billfish Tournament has an event of this style and magnitude taken place in the Grand Lagoon, also known as the East End of the beach. This event encompasses seventeen amazing days of the best fishing our wonderful Gulf Coast has to offer, with two daily weigh-ins along with prizes, daily entertainment, tons of vendors, bounce houses, an obstacle course, a cornhole competition, an axe-throwing party, live music on stage, and all the best Gulf Coast culinary offerings and beverages available. So how did this all come about? "There was no tournament in our area any longer," begins Joe Laymon, the Tournament Director. "So, the question arose, why was there no tournament any longer? I remember how fun the Billfish Tournament was. It was a good time for everyone. I started to ask around, what had happened to it? And the response was that the anglers just hadn't been catching the fish that they once had." But it seemed that everyone in the community wanted to see a fishing tournament happen again on the east end of the beach. "We're the only part of the beach – the east end – that actually has the opportunity to host this type of event and offer the boating life with quick access to the Gulf," he explains, "which is one of the reasons many people come here." Both locals and visitors get joy out of being at Capt. Anderson's Marina, he observes. "There's a breath of life that

exists in the fishing and charter industry and being on or near the water every day. I've seen fathers, sons, and grandfathers coming back over and over…multiple generations. It's the most interesting entertainment that's out on the beach." Joe knew putting on a fishing tournament would require a lot of work, so he and Capt. Mike Sullivan, owner of Capt. Mike Charters at Capt. Anderson's Marina, put their heads together and began brainstorming a 17-day tournament. They looked at the 73-year-old Destin Fishing Rodeo to provide the template. "It seemed like a nobrainer to make a fishing tournament span three weekends, in case one or more of the weekends has inclement weather," he states. The longer event will also give people a better opportunity to attend and better fit it around their schedules by having that many more days to choose from. Opening night is the Kickoff Party for the PC Beach Fishing Rodeo on Friday, September 24. "From day one, we're going to have weighins. At 12:01 AM on September 24, boats are taking off and fishing. They'll be back by 12 noon for their first weigh-in. Leader boards will be filled with the different species of fish, the sizes in weight, and the different divisions. The competition literally beings at the Kick-off Party with food vendors that will offer oysters, seafood, pizza, and burgers. Local live entertainment plays until 9/9:30 PM that night. There will be corn hole, Jenga, and an obstacle course for the young people. Florida Watersports will showcase kayaks and paddleboards; Legendary Marine will feature their boats. We'll have t-shirts and hats for the PC Beach Fishing Rodeo for sale."
F E A T U R E | pc beach fishing rodeo Joe and Mike decided to include the whole community in this event. "Not one entity is profiting," he states. "We want to allow the local establishments and retailers to participate… we want everyone to be proud of and involved in this." The Rodeo's schedule of events includes fun "Rodeo After Parties" throughout the seventeen days at Sisters of the Sea, Pelican's at the Sheraton PCB Resort, Hunts Oyster Bar, The Upper Deck, Buster's Boardwalk, Dreamers Bar & Grill, Barracuda Beach, Patches Pub, and Hammerhead Fred's. Sunday, October 10, is the final night of the Rodeo. An Awards Ceremony will follow the final weigh-in, which merges with the Grand Lagoon's Pirates of the High Seas festivities, including pirates, live entertainment, and fireworks. "Anyone can be a part of this Rodeo, with their own boat or they can charter a boat," says Joe. "Register at PCBeachFishingRodeo.com, check out the charter boats, and contact them directly to book a trip. All boats will book one to two trips per day." Fish categories will include (categories may be added or taken off prior to the start of the tournament due to fishing regulations): King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Vermilion Snapper, Black Snapper, Amberjacks, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Gag Grouper, Red Grouper (and all other Grouper), and all Tuna. Shark has just been added to the lineup!

healthy growth, but perhaps there is more we should consider when addressing whole-child health and wellness. Outside of the usual
wellness checks at your pediatrician, do you monitor the physical
and mental health and development of your child? Your unique knowledge of your child's interests, behaviors, and interactions is key
to understanding how your child is developing their communication, social, and problem-solving skills and physical abilities. Frequent monitoring would help achieve this.
as young as 3 months old can get a check-in on their milestone
things like growth, speech, hearing, and behavior. And think about a system where once those concerns have been identified, a plan is put into place to help your family get the assistance you need with
appropriate referrals to medical professionals and services. And did we mention we need this system to be a free resource for families? I
think we can agree that a resource like this has been needed in our area to serve the children, families, and educators that monitor and assess the healthy development of our children. Well, such a system
does exist and has recently been brought to our
region by Help Me Grow Northwest Florida (HMG) and is at no cost to families. Part of the Florida Help
Me Grow program, the Northwest affiliate is now serving Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, and Washington Counties.
So, what exactly is a "check-in" on milestone moments, and why is it important? A check-in is
conducted through developmental and behavioral
screenings that are appropriate at different stages through a child's growth. Developmental screenings offer a snapshot of a child's current abilities in
language, movement, thinking, behavior, and emotions. It is a way to tell if the child is learning
these basic skills when they should or if there
may be a delay in their development. With all this
being said, it is also important to note that children
develop at their own pace and that not all children will have the same development.
HMG Screenings are conducted on children
3-months through 8-years of age and can be performed at any point and any time in this time frame. Tools such as Ages & Stages Questionnaires
are used to take the snapshot needed to catch any possible delays as well as celebrate milestones.
"We are not conducting these screenings to look for problems," says Alyssa Gray, Help Me Grow
Northwest Florida Program Manager. "Instead,
24
THE CIRCUIT | September/October 2021
we explain to parents that we are looking to show you 'this is normal
development, and your child is right now, on target.'"
But the fact is, too often children with developmental concerns get missed, and these concerns can
impact a child's ability to be ready
for kindergarten and miss future markers for educational success.
These could be delays that interfere
with expected growth, learning, and development and may warrant a further diagnosis or evaluation.
Children who are identified and receive intervention services earlier
are more likely to be successful readers, less likely to continue needing
special education services later in life, more likely to have improved social skills, and are more likely to graduate from high school.
In addition to the developmental screenings, HMG offers care coordination to families. A care coordinator will listen, provide support, and assess the needs of your child and family by communicating the screening results
and providing the appropriate referrals to local services and support, including your child's pediatrician or specialists. Scheduled follow-ups will
occur to check in on previous referrals given and any additional concerns
that your family may have. The goal is to help families overcome barriers
to services and follow up with your child to make sure the referred services are successful. "We are here to work with families and help them make the
best plan for what they want to do. We figure out how we can support them in that plan, and we connect them to the appropriate resources to help them execute that plan," Gray says.
The recommendation for parents or guardians who notice that their child is not meeting major milestones is to talk to their health care provider
about their concerns. For a free child development screening, call 2-1-1
and ask for Help Me Grow, or contact us directly at hmg@elcnwf.org. Be sure to follow us on Facebook @hmgnwf for additional information and resources for raising healthy kids. With this valuable resource at no cost
to families, our hope is for a future with children who are happy, healthy, and thriving both physically and mentally.

Breaking Down the Food Groups to
CRUSH CANCER
I
Brittany Schicho MS, RD, LDN, CNSC Clinical Nutrition Manager Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center
n the United States, cancer is the second leading cause of death in both men and women, only behind heart disease. For Americans who do not use tobacco, the most important modifiable risk factors are diet, physical activity, and body weight. About one in five cancers diagnosed in the U.S. is related to these risk factors and therefore could have been prevented. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent cancer, research suggests that avoiding weight gain or losing weight for people who are overweight may decrease cancer risk. Working to maintain or achieve a healthy weight, namely through healthy eating and regular physical activity, are the best tools available in the fight against cancer. Recent studies suggest that overall eating pattern, rather than specific foods or nutrients, is more important for cancer risk reduction. A healthy eating pattern includes: • Foods that are nutrient-dense instead of foods that are calorie-dense • A colorful variety of fruits and vegetables, including beans and peas • Whole grains A healthy eating pattern limits or does not include: • Red and processed meats • Sugar-sweetened foods and beverages • Highly processed foods
FOODS TO FILL UP ON Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are complex foods that contain fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that may help prevent cancer. Evidence suggests consumption of fruits and vegetables may be especially beneficial for lowering the risk of breast, colorectal, lung, stomach, and throat cancers. Additionally, fruits and vegetables may also lower cancer risk through their effects on body weight and calorie intake. Most are low in calories but high in fiber and water, so regular intake may help lower overall calorie intake and help with weight loss or maintenance. For cancer risk reduction, adults should aim to consume at least 2.5-3 cups of vegetables and 1.5-2 cups of fruit daily. 42

breaking down food groups to crush cancer – gcrmc
Some of the fruits and vegetables being researched for cancer reductions are dark green/leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower), bright orange vegetables, and tomato products. Legumes (beans and peas) are also healthy choices.
are drinks like sodas, sweet tea, coffee drinks, energy drinks, and sports drinks. Cutting down on these beverages can make a big difference in added sugar and calorie intake.
As a general goal, aim to fill half the plate with fruits or vegetables at every meal. The darker/brighter colors tend to have more cancerfighting compounds, so “eat the rainbow”. Fresh, frozen, or canned can be healthy options that work for any budget. And while most of the benefit comes from raw produce, there are some nutrients that are better absorbed once cooked, so variety in preparation is also beneficial. Limit deep-fried vegetables and fruits in heavy syrup; otherwise, all are good choices.
Another type of drink to limit or avoid is alcohol. Alcohol is a known cause of a variety of cancers, including mouth, throat, and liver cancers. For those who choose to drink alcohol, it is recommended to limit intake to one drink per day for women or two drinks per day for men. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor. Some research has shown that consuming any amount of alcohol increases the risk of some types of cancer, especially breast cancer.
Whole Grains
Grains are foods made from wheat, rice, oats, and other cereal grains. Whole grains are made from the entire grain kernel and have more fiber and nutrients. Refined grains, such as white flour, white bread, white rice, and pasta, lose some nutritional value during processing. Research has shown that whole grains likely play a role in lowering the risk of colorectal cancer. They are also a good source of dietary fiber, which again can help control calorie intake and achieve bodyweight goals. Aim to make at least half of grain choices in a day come from whole grains. A few examples of how to add whole grains: start the day with oatmeal or shredded wheat, swap white bread and tortillas for whole wheat options, switch out white rice for quinoa or brown/wild rice, or choose popcorn as a snack (but be mindful of the butter and salt).
FOODS TO EAT SPARINGLY (IF AT ALL)
Alcohol
Heavily Processed Foods and Refined Carbohydrates
Heavily processed foods tend to be high in calories and added sugars and have been linked with unwanted health outcomes, including cancer, in some studies. Up to 60% of the calories consumed daily in America are from highly processed foods and drinks. Snack foods, ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat foods, candies, baked goods, and other foods that do not resemble their original plant or animal sources are examples of processed foods. Try to limit intake of these foods to special occasions or just a few times per week. Following a healthy eating pattern does not have to be a tasteless or joyless experience. Balancing healthy and unhealthy choices and monitoring portion sizes can be an excellent way to both enjoy eating and promote good health. For help making lifestyle changes, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian.
If you consume these foods, first try to cut down on portion size and then reduce frequency.
Red and Processed Meats
Red meats and processed meats have been found to increase cancer risk, mostly for colorectal cancer. They have also been implicated in a higher risk of developing lung, pancreas, and stomach cancers and emerging evidence suggests they may also affect breast and prostate cancer risk as well. Red meats include beef, veal, pork, and lamb. Processed meats are those that have been transformed through curing, smoking, or other processes to improve preservation or enhance flavor. Examples include bacon, sausage, ham, bologna, hot dogs, and deli meats. Healthier protein choices are those that are naturally lean, such as poultry, fish and seafood, and beans.
Added Sugars
Sugars and other sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup are often used in drinks and traditional fast foods. Added sugar is defined as sugars that are added during food processing, foods packaged as sweeteners, sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated juices. They do not include naturally occurring sugars found in milk and fruits. Added sugars are linked with risk of weight gain and being overweight, which increases overall cancer risk. U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend getting less than 10% of daily calories from added sugars. For an adult who consumes 2,000 calories a day, this translates to a maximum of 50 g, or roughly 12 teaspoons. The average American eats 77 g (almost 20 tsp a day), and children eat even more. Added sugars are now required on the Nutrition Facts label, so it is easier than ever before to track their intake. One of the biggest culprits of added sugars in our diets WWW.PCBEACH.ORG 43

ALIGNMENT BAY COUNTY Since 2015, Alignment Bay County (ABC), its volunteers and partner organizations have focused on youth success from cradle to career. They actively work to bring together diverse partners from across the county to help the youth in the community become successful adults. The organization has recently created a behavioral health website and is producing a local podcast with the goal of creating easier access to behavioral health resources within the community. The website, www.howyadoing.org, features a directory with over 70 local behavioral health service providers and organizations in addition to other resources for both adults and children, including articles and community events. The podcast “How Ya Doing Bay County?” works in collaboration with the Gulf Coast State College Digital Media Program to feature local experts discussing mental health topics, relating the topic to the local community. “How Ya Doing Bay County?” can be found on the website and on most major podcast directories. Both products resulted from ABC members sharing concerns and observations about worsening mental health conditions postHurricane Michael. When the COVID-19 pandemic became prevalent in early 2020, the initiative became that much more important to the organization. Their hope is to let the community know they are not alone and there are many resources available to them. BEACH NUTRITION Most of us probably have fond memories from our childhood of where a soda machine was and how many coins it took before picking our favorite flavor. It was always a treat to visit that machine and walk away with a cold, refreshing drink. When we were kids, our regular beverages seemed to be super-sweet tea from the fridge, a soda from our favorite vending machine, and just maybe some water from an outdoor hose. Other than the water from the hose, most of our beverages were full of sugar and provided very little, if any, nutritional value. Over the past several years, finding drink options that provide nutritional value without sugar has been difficult. Even finding juices that contain real juice is difficult. We became involved in the quest to provide a healthy, low or no sugar option of drinks and meal replacement shakes early in 2021. As nutrition clubs became popular places to visit across many areas of the country, we saw the difference that healthy options were making in our lives and in the lives of those around us. After participating in other clubs, we started Beach Nutrition as an opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle in Panama City Beach. We want to be that drink you have fond memories of and reach for daily. Beach Nutrition offers a number of healthy drinks, including loaded teas and meal replacement shakes with options offering vitamins, protein, collagen, immunity boost, hydration, and more. However, most people will say the best part is that the drinks are delicious with no or low sugar. Along with the beverage options, Beach Nutrition offers a unique experience and strives to provide everyone motivation and the encouragement to meet and exceed their personal nutrition goals. We are located at 230 S. Arnold Road in Panama City Beach. Come by or call us at (850) 252-7907, or look us up on social @beachnutritionpcb.
SMRT SOLUTIONS, INC. My name is Brad Sparks, and I am the CEO of SMRT Solutions Inc. I have been involved in Emergency Medical Services since 1982. I have always had the desire to help others in a crisis. As my career evolved, I began teaching lay rescuers to help in times of crisis. I enjoy helping others learn by coming up with creative ways to teach CPR, First Aid, etc. This includes the opportunity to train multiple EMTs and Paramedics. In 2012, a good friend told me I should start my own company and Specialized Medical Response Training (SMRT) was created. My daughter became my first employee in 2012 and she is very much involved in the company today. We have a staff of 5 instructors in Indiana. I am proud of the success we have had, training well over 3,000 individuals annually. In 2018 I was considering other goals I have always wanted to achieve. That April, I decided to move to Panama City Beach and similarly start an identical organization at a small location in the Panhandle. In April of 2021, we opened a larger, more convenient location with a staff of 3 instructors. We offer a variety of class options, including open enrollment, online +skills sessions, and on-site training. Since 2012 we have provided same-day certification, great pricing, helpful instructors, and no headaches. We are excited to be offering American Heart Association courses to not only locals, but individuals that attend our courses while visiting our beautiful beaches. Superintendent, BAY DISTRICT SCHOOLS
I
f I had to sum up our return to school with one word, I would definitely choose “gratitude.” As I have visited our schools, I have just been overwhelmed with the continued resilience of our students, the passion and dedication of our employees, and the support of our families. No doubt we’ve had challenges as we all adjust to new transportation guidelines, a new school on the beach, a new dress code and other changes, but I just could not be more proud of the way all of our stakeholders are working to support each other. I am also grateful for all the families who have entrusted us with the education of their students and the support those families provide to our students, employees, and schools. It’s often said that “a rising tide lifts all ships,” and that is so very true. Our schools do not make our students successful; it’s our students (and their families) who make our schools successful. I sincerely hope that we’re able to navigate our way back to a semblance of “normal” this year because I know that is what our students so desperately need. Although I can’t predict the future, I can guarantee that Bay District Schools will do everything we can to
ensure our operations are as “normal” as possible, and we sincerely appreciate ALL of the stakeholders who help us with that. The experts agree that we will be dealing with Covid-19 for at least the next two years, so it’s critical that we all work together to keep our students and staff as safe as possible. Keeping your students home when they are sick is an absolutely vital component of our safety plan. If you’re at all connected to our school system, I hope your family experienced as smooth a start to school as possible. Nothing is ever perfect and Covid-19 has certainly thrown us some curveballs, but it’s a blessing just to be in school, and I know many of you share that sentiment. We may not be able to solve all of the problems because sometimes the resources simply aren’t available or don’t exist, BUT we will always seek to do what’s best for our students. The personal, candid conversations I have every day with members of our community continue to remind me that Bay County is an amazing place in which to live, work and play, and I’m so grateful to live in a community that cares so deeply for our children. Gratitude… the more we practice it, the more we feel it. I’m grateful for all of you and I hope you continue to stay safe. God Bless!

Executive Director, CAREERSOURCE GULF COAST
W
e were excited about turning a corner to reintroduce “normalcy,” just as the COVID-19 Delta variant brought about a second round of concern and challenges. We see these impacts daily as businesses work hard to remain open and operational, and individuals strive to make the decisions that are best for themselves and their families. This time of year, we typically experience an increase in job seekers actively seeking employment as students return to school and seasonal hiring for the holidays edges forward. Many parents and guardians look for opportunities to return to the workforce after their children return to school in the fall, and individuals searching for supplemental income look for the flexibility that seasonal/temporary employment offers. While this second round of the pandemic created a new set of hurdles for both employers and job seekers, we have seen more job seekers actively looking for work than we were earlier this year. Anecdotally, job seekers have indicated that they feel more comfortable going back to work due to a larger number of individuals receiving vaccinations (including themselves). They are tired of having a fear of the pandemic rule over their lives. Some customers are still fearful of entering the workforce and are seeking remote work options. While the Delta variant slowed foot traffic in our centers, we are still hearing from job seekers who want to go to work. To accommodate
concerns, we gladly continue to offer our services virtually, offering a connection to services without compromising anyone’s individual concerns or preferences. Under Governor DeSantis’ guidance, the state has encouraged eligible people to return to the workforce through the ‘Return to Work’ initiative. This is reflected by Florida withdrawing from the $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation and the expiration of work search and work registration requirement waivers for individuals drawing Reemployment Assistance benefits at the end of June. Jobs remain plentiful while Florida’s economy continues to gain steam. To support this initiative, we continue to do what we do every day by providing employment services to any and all job seekers and employers who visit or contact our centers. For eligible individuals interested in learning new skills, we offer financial assistance for training. For individuals interested in reentering the workforce or finding a new career, we offer career guidance, resume editing, job referrals, and more to get you prepared to present your best self and land the job. For employers, we can assist you in developing job descriptions, providing labor market information, and posting and recruiting for open positions. CareerSource Gulf Coast proudly serves both our area’s employers and job seekers. As the tide changes, we will ride the waves by continuing to serve our community while adapting to changes and planning for a prosperous full recovery. Come see us!

usic videos continue to pay tribute to the area. Country artist Noah Garrett and Three Part Films filmed three videos over the past several months, two of which have been released – "Spring Break Town" and "Cover Up Tattoo". You will be able to identify the locations and say, "I'VE BEEN THERE!" Laine Hardy, a big name in the Southern Bayou genre, also filmed his most recent video in Panama City Beach, "Memorize You". We love having these projects here, especially when they cast local talent in these global releases. Our best friends on HGTV's Beachfront Bargain Hunt returned to Panama City Beach for a new episode. This one features homes in the Bay Point area. The family also took a boat to Shell Island and had great fun spotting sea life. The HIVE for Discovery Channel wrapped up their six-month project in Bay County on a series focusing on a local matchmaker. This production was in town for a week-10 days for each month and filmed at least 4-6 different locations every time! From Oakland Terrace and downtown Panama City to Frank Brown Park and many spots in between, this will be one to watch. This company gave a big injection to our economic impact.

Barstool Sports came to PCB in a big way! This popular blog with MILLIONS of followers hosted a five-city challenge for their players. After an eating competition, the contestants were thrust into an adult-sized ball pit on the beach, where contestants had to run thru a gauntlet of activities, ultimately digging thru the pit to find specific items to continue in their challenge. Panama City Beach lived up to the World's Most Beautiful Beaches. Chrisley Knows Best filmed their latest vacation in our area. This television show has great ratings and is a wholesome family program. From the Ebro Poker Room to St Andrew State Park, this family had a roaring good time. Go ahead and set your DVR to tape the show, because you will want to watch it again and again. With so much going on during this pandemic, make sure that you contact the Film Office with any inquiries you get for filming. Productions need to provide a Certificate of Liability for ANY filming on your property. Also, there are strategic measures in place for COVID-19 safety that are important to follow. If you have any questions, please contact Film Commissioner Julie Gordon at floridafilmoffice@knology.net. See you in the Movies!

A Letter From Your Chamber Rep
T
he Panama City Beach Chamber is the link that connects our business community together, or as I like to say, “we connect the dots!” I love it when I walk into a business
and see their membership plaque displayed on the wall or their membership sticker on the door. I have recently noticed that some of our members have put “Proud Member” and our Beach Chamber logo on their business cards, marketing material, and even on their wrapped vehicles. It makes me so happy to see how proud our members feel about being a part of our Beach Chamber family. We are more than just a Chamber; we are one big family! Our members are always looking out for one another and want to help each other grow. Our Chamber office receives many calls and e-mails each week asking for referrals and newcomer packets. As a Chamber member, your information is shared and if they stop by rather than call, they can grab your rack card or business card. If you are not sure if we have your business information available, please call or stop by – Missy always loves seeing and speaking with our members and loves telling our guests about our amazing members. Our family is continuing to grow, and we are quickly approaching 1,400 members……..let me repeat that, approaching 1,400 members!!! We attribute our growth to the opening of many new businesses, referrals from our highly satisfied members, and our very valued ambassadors. I once heard someone say, “light yourself on fire and they will come for miles to see you burn.” Well folks, we are on FIRE! Let’s connect some dots!
