BAY FAMILIES WITH DOGS

LAGOON PONTOONS

Our bond with dogs is one of the most endearing love stories in human history. People who enjoy idyllic Shell Island with their dogs have had a slice of heaven on earth for generations. When that lifestyle was threatened by unwanted regulations, Bay Families with Dogs was formed, regaining dog lovers’ access to the center part of Shell Island.

Looking for fun in the sun? Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll find it at Lagoon Pontoons!

MARCHING TOWARDS MORE DOG-FRIENDLINESS

FUN IN THE SUN STARTS HERE

Bay Families with Dogs' calling was expanded, as members asked for more public places to enjoy with their dogs together. Thus began the area's long, successful march towards dog-friendliness.

Lagoon Pontoons has been renting boats for six seasons. It was Lagoon Pontoons that first brought the double decker party boats to Panama City Beach! They pride themselves on offering the newest and cleanest boats on the beach. From the minute you step up to the hut and check in to the minute you unload at the dock to head home after a day out at Shell Island, it’s their goal to make it an easy and enjoyable experience.

At Pier Park, we now have the famous Panama City Beach Dog Beach; VisitFlorida.com calls it one of the best dog-friendly beaches in Florida! Mexico Beach, in eastern Bay County, allows dogs on the beach to the right of the Mexico Beach canal. This area now boasts four dog parks within a 20 mile radius, with a new one on the way. Panama City and Panama City Beach now allow restaurants to get permits allowing dogs on outdoor patios.

The dock for Lagoon Pontoons is tucked away down North Lagoon Drive, just past Captain Anderson’s and Grand Marlin. It’s a lovely lot, full of old shady oak trees along the edge of the lagoon. During the check-in process, there’s a shaded picnic area you can wait under, a lounge area where you can stick your toes in the sand, a playset for kids, and our Pontoon Pantry is stocked with snacks and beach supplies to purchase for your day on the water.

Dog-friendly events, such as last fall’s “Barktoberfest” at Hook’d Pier Bar attract dog lovers who increasingly travel with their dogs along and look for fun events to experience.

The best part about Lagoon Pontoons is that it’s just a short ten minute ride away from Shell Island! You can take a pontoon and kick back and relax. You can hop on a jet ski tour for a fast paced adventure. Or you can book a Flippers dolphin tour from the same dock! The choice is yours and Lagoon Pontoons would love to have you!

Bay Families with Dogs helps visitors to the area who inquire about where to take their dogs when they vacation here, and was recently credited in the national newspaper USA Today for helping establish the area's dog-friendliness. For more information, visit our website www.bayfwd.org.

“It is like going into battle again with 39 other brothers and sisters,” said Guinn. “We compete, train, share rooms, live and

eat together. We do everything together. So it’s nice to show up and cheer each other on as part of a team.”

The team embodies everything the Wounded Warrior Program represents: resilience and teamwork.

“The Wounded Warrior Program provides a couple different services,” Guinn noted. “But for me, the Air Force Wounded

Warrior program provides adaptive and rehabilitative support, and that was really crucial in my recovery to help me get back

and be part of a team. It got me back to being active again and competing in sporting events.”

The Wounded Warrior Program reached out to Guinn after he sustained injuries to both knees while deployed in Afghanistan.

“My surgeon initially told me that I would probably never run again, and if I did it is going to be extremely uncomfortable,” Guinn explained.

The recovery took time and was another hurdle to overcome in order to participate in not only his military duties, but also sporting events, where his passion lies.

“My recovery took a good year and a half, two years of just physical therapy and then everything on my own,” Guinn said.

After recovery, he was able to put back on the uniform and

return to a deployable status. Guinn would continue to push

the boundaries of his recovery by training for the upcoming Wounded Warrior Games.

“I started running and eventually I got picked up for the Air Force trials in 2017,” Guinn said.

Guinn won every race in his classification that year and set

three new records. He described it as the highlight of his recovery. Guinn credits his competitive personality for fueling his motivation to be the best athlete he can be.

Last year all of his races were won by a very thin margin of 1.2 seconds or less. The competition being so close behind, it pushed him to run that much faster.

Soon to compete in this year’s games, representing Tyndall’s

“This year I got picked up for the 2018 Warrior Games for track, field, archery, power-lifting, sitting volley ball and wheelchair basketball,” said Guinn.

Guinn, who was once told he would probably never run again, takes long strides to beat out his fierce competitors; truly earning his spot in this year’s Warrior Games.

For the past five years, Labor Day Weekend in Panama City Beach has attracted thousands of country music fans to come jam out with some of the biggest names in country music.

O

rganizers of the 6th Annual Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam are gearing up again for the largest three-day country

music extravaganza on the Gulf Coast, taking place August 31st – September 2nd, 2018.

The Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam was recently named one of “The 10 Best Country Music Festivals” by Billboard Magazine, and Country Living stated that the festival is among "12 of the Best Country Music Festivals," saying, "This party takes place in one of Florida's most beautiful locations, Panama City Beach."

was lucky enough to sit down with Gulf Coast Jam Executive Producer, Rendy Lovelady, to discuss the event and learn about what makes it so successful.

In the past five years, The Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam has brought headliners such as Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bently, Jason Aldean, Little Big Town and many others. This year, award-winning country music superstars Florida Georgia Line, Eric Church, and Thomas Rhett will be headlining, bringing yet another incredible set of music acts! The talented lineup doesn’t stop there! Executive Producer, Rendy Lovelady, said, "We are incredibly excited about this lineup and feel there is something for everyone who walks through our gates.” This year Justin Moore, Chris Janson, Dustin Lynch, Chase Rice, Cam and Brett Young are all confirmed to perform over the three days. Lauren Alaina, Rodney Atkins, Joe Diffie, Morgan Evans, Montgomery Gentry, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tyler Rich, A Thousand Horses, Drake White, The Georgia Thunderbolts, Raleigh Keegan and the Pepsi Southern Original winner round out the lineup for this year’s Gulf Coast Jam. The Pepsi Southern Original Contest will be returning again this year! Eight finalists, from all over the world, will compete for a chance to perform on the main stage, on one of the three nights. Winners will be voted on by a panel of judges, including Gulf Coast Jam Executive Producer Rendy Lovelady. They will be judged on originality, stage presence, and music quality. The finalists are scheduled to perform live and compete for the title of Pepsi Southern Original on Thursday, August 30, at Ms. Newby’s in Panama

City Beach. You can find more information and details about the competition at gulfcoastjam. com/southern-original-contest. Last year this festival created an economic impact of over 21 million dollars. Over 64,000 fans from all 50 states and 13 foreign countries packed last year's Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam – which was the largest in the festival's history. However, Rendy mentioned that he expects this year’s festival to be a sold out event, considering that ticket sales are already 46% higher than this time last year! Music begins each day at 2 p.m., so festival goers can spend the morning taking a leisurely walk on the beach, hitting one of many challenging golf courses, fishing, enjoying the bright sunshine, grabbing lunch at one of Panama City Beach's wonderful restaurants or checking out other area attractions before heading to the concert grounds for an afternoon and evening of entertainment. Safety is a huge concern with an event this size, and making sure that people feel safe is a huge priority for Executive Producer, Rendy Lovelady. This year, security will be upped by 100 percent, and undercover cops and extra security will be monitoring the event. However, safety will go beyond the concert

venue, and “blocked zones” will be set up to allow people to walk safely to and from the event. Anyone attending or working the event will be electronically searched at the gate. The Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam will have over 80 vendors and some new, exciting additions this year. Last year, they brought in an air-conditioned bar that allowed people to watch the opening weekend of SEC Football. The Gulf Coast Jam producers were so impressed with the success of the bar, that they decided to bring in a bigger one this year. They are also adding fireworks to this year's show. Tickets for the three-day festival are available now and range

t is becoming increasingly clear that weight training is not just for

appearances. A recent study published in The British Medical Journal found that muscle weakness increases the likelihood of death and many other specific illnesses. This study looked at over 500,000 subjects and tracked their medical records over several years. It used grip strength as a gauge of muscle weakness. When factoring in all other risks, including age, diet, activity level, and economic status; grip strength was an independent risk factor for death and disease. For death from all causes, each 11lb increment

was

associated with a 20% increase of death in women and 16% increase in men. Specifically, for heart disease, the risk was 19% greater for women with weak grip and 22% for men. For respiratory disease, the risk was 31% greater for women and 24% for men. And for cancer, the risk was 17% greater for women and 10% greater for men. A separate Norwegian study examined grip strength in the elderly in their 80s and 90s and found that a stronger grip can predict the likelihood of these patients living past 100. What might account for this association? Grip strength is a proxy for lean muscle mass. Generally speaking, a stronger grip would indicate the rest Photo provided Mirror Image 30 THE CIRCUIT by July/August 2018Athletics

"Weight training has been shown to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, decrease inflammatory mediators, decrease the signs of aging in the skin, improve regulation of blood sugar, and improve overall cardiovascular health." of muscles are in good condition. The benefit of lean muscle mass and weight training is well known. Weight training has been shown to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, decrease inflammatory mediators, decrease the signs of aging in the skin, improve regulation of blood sugar, and improve overall cardiovascular health. A study looking at laboratory mice genetically modified to age quickly were separated into a sedentary group and an active group. The active group aged much more slowly than the sedentary group. This included lack of balding and greying of their fur. These same researchers, then studied humans and found that exercise reversed aging in human skin as well; even in test subjects that had not previously exercised. The data is overwhelming that if your goal is to stay healthy and look younger, getting a grip on your health and getting to the gym should be priority number one. Outside of saving yourself money on doctor visits and hospital stays, having confidence in your appearance and being able to enjoy an active lifestyle are just added bonuses. And you don’t have to be a gym rat to have the benefits, as little as 30 minutes three times a week can lead to the overall health benefits.

he Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted its 9th Annual Women’s Work-Life Symposium on Friday, May 18.

Presented by Emerald Coast Hospice, the sold out event took place at Florida State University Panama City’s Holley Academic Center. At this leading women’s event on the Emerald Coast, over 300 women were given the opportunity to come together for a full day of networking, professional development, and personal growth opportunities. The day featured powerful speakers addressing topics beneficial to help women maintain a healthy work-life balance. Attendees heard three inspiring keynote speakers and attended two breakout workshops of their choice. The first keynote speaker and author of the book All Work & No Say, Jody Urquhart kicked off the event with her humorous yet motivating message, "This Would Be Funny If It Wasn’t Happening to Me!” Throughout her session, the room was filled with laughter as she gave hilarious and uplifting advice on how to develop a positive and meaningful perspective in the midst of stress and change. Have you ever looked at your closet full of clothes and thought, “I have absolutely nothing to wear?” Personal Stylist, Amy Giles with Wardrobe Made Simple spoke after lunch, with a light-hearted, informative message, “Take Back Your Closet, Take Back Your Life.” Her closet editing and organizing tips were eye opening, and she discussed key pieces for the professional woman, and how to put it all together. The final keynote speaker, Christine Hassler is known for catalyzing radical self-reflection while offering practical direction, and is dedicated to inspiring people to make the changes that lead to fulfillment. She taught well researched personal development and communication strategies to empower attendees to be their all. Christine’s engaging style left the audience motivated and with tools they can implement to live less busy and more fulfilling lives.

Summertime is here, and, with our furry family members being actively involved with us for summer events and traveling, we must keep them safe in the heat. Below are a few important tips for your pet's safety during these hot months.

2 | Watch Your Dog in the Water Not all dogs are natural swimmers, so watch your best friend when your near the pool, beach or lake. On trips to the ocean, make sure they don't drink the salt water, it can make their stomachs upset. Watch the currents; even the best paddling

4 | Look Out for Warning Signs Heat stroke is an issue for pets. Look out for excessive panting and drooling, bright red gums, weakness and balance problems. If you see any of these signs, take to your veterinarian immediately.

5 | Travel Safely Never leave them inside a car with windows up or down on hot days. Keeps dogs head in car while driving: inner ear damage, lung infections and injury can happen. Buckle up or put in a crate while traveling. Never let them ride in the back of trucks!

6 | Keep A Close Eye On Them At Parties Be cautious of what your cats and dogs can get into while you have guest over to celebrate. Alcohol, chocolate, raisins and onions can be bad for them. Fireworks and big crowds can frighten them. Keep away from sparklers and concerts.

at Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center

My name is Suzanna Haynes, born and raised right here in Panama City. I was born at Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center 23 years ago on November 10, 1994. When I found out I was expecting my daughter, I knew I wanted to give birth in the same location. Child birth was always one of my biggest fears, but while giving birth to my precious baby girl at Gulf Coast on February 21, 2018, those fears were greatly subsided by the staff and nurses there. I always felt important and that the nurses genuinely cared for me. I am most thankful for my team of physicians. On top of the staff at Gulf Coast, they also have new rooms for recovery and they make you feel so fresh and comfortable after having your baby. I feel so lucky to have a medical facility with this kind of care so close to home!

COMMITTEE UPDATES | HYPE

HYPE

O

ur previous HYPE update was about the amazing events we held at WJHG News Channel 7 and the luncheon with Bay County

Sheriff's Department at Another Broken Egg Cafe. Now, let’s recap our last event and introduce our newest Board member, Emma Koen.

On May 29th, HYPE held a great, post-holiday weekend, social at Gulf

Coast Burger Co. We got to see their new additions to the bar area which is now called "The 850 Bar". The new graphics and menus really

add a fun flair to celebrate our beautiful beach. While we were able to socialize and catch up with everyone, Dustin and Jessie, of Gulf Coast

Burger Co., had prepared a fantastic menu for us. We were able to try their seasoned pork skins, tomato salad, mini corn dogs, and the

loaded fries. The food, the atmosphere, and people made this event

so much fun! We are looking forward to seeing you at the next HYPE event!

CAPTION: The newest HYPE 2018 Board Member, Emma Koen with ResortQuest By Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

Emma is originally from Daphne, AL and attended the University of

Alabama. After college she had the opportunity to work at a Forbes 5 Star Resort in Cape Code, MA where she found her passion for

hospitality and creating unforgettable vacation memories. She has a background working for Hilton brand hotels and moved to Panama City Beach three years ago to work for ResortQuest by Wyndham.

2018 HYPE Board: Chair - Jaclyn Kocher, Southernista Fashionista; Chamber Liaison - Kristopher McLane, PCB Chamber; Board Catherine Collins, Resort Collection; Jake Mann, Community Bank;

Kevin Kussro, Acentria Insurance; Richard Holt, Resort Collection; and Emma Koen, ResortQuest By Wyndham Vacation Rentals

I moved here not knowing anyone or anything about Panama City

Beach. Wherever I travel, I like to get to know and get involved in the community. I started by attending Chamber and After-Hours events, HYPE was actually the first committee I joined. In addition to meeting like-minded business professionals, I've also enjoyed helping

the community and making new friends along the way. I love the

He spoke of Risk. Diving into the unknown. Going for it. Setting yourself apart. Being memorable. Handing the reins over to a higher power, and trusting when the higher power says, "We've got this."

O

n May 30, the Beach Chamber’s IdeaCamp took place at the Todd Herendeen Theatre on Front Beach Road. The presenter was

Todd Herendeen himself, who shared his “story” with over 70 attendees. Todd was not always a singer/entertainer and had a different career in Indiana before entering a local singing competition one night, that would change the course of his life. Dressed as “How Elvis would look if he were alive today,” Todd made a comedic but memorable impact on the audience that evening and won the competition. This, in turn, led to his first official Elvis impersonator “gig” – complete with black wig and jumpsuit – and he was off! At IdeaCamp, Todd spoke frequently about staying unique and setting yourself apart from the crowd. “If you’re selling bathtubs and there’s five other bathtub companies down the street,” he offered, “what are you going to do to be different? You’ve got to be memorable.” He also stressed tenacity and staying the course, even when others – even close to you – question your direction. Anything good involves risk. As a Christian, Todd relies heavily on his faith in God to help steer him, let him know when something is right, but also prompt him when it’s time to close a door.

What Is IdeaCamp? IdeaCamp is a forum to inspire, energize, and ignite the community through sharing, connecting, and cultivating of open-minded discussions supporting the free flow of ideas. IdeaCamp creates an experience to learn, engage, and expand your life and your business. CAPTION (Top): Barbie Brendalen and Britt Matthews at Alice's on Bay View. COMMITTEE UPDATES | AMBASSADORS

AMBASSADORS REPRESENT YOUR CHAMBER BY JEREMY HINTON

This is the summer issue and our beach is in the middle of tourism season. The roads are packed with cars, the wait time at Firefly is long (but worth it), and a dozen tourists mistakenly turned onto Back Beach Road on rented scooters. But for us locals, it’s all good. I asked members of the Ambassadors what they liked about our area, their favorite places, what we do well and how we could make it better. Our favorite places include destinations like Pier Park, Econfina Creek, Shell Island and St. Andrews State Park. You might find us occupying tables at Patches Pub and Grill, Eat My Pasty, or Shuckums Oyster Pub and Seafood Grill. We live in a beachy vacation locale, so it should come as no surprise that our favorite vacations involve the mountains, cruise ships, and camping. Returning home after a vacation is never a letdown because we live by the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches. Sometimes we take this for granted but watching the sunset over the water will reset that mindset. Try it, then pinch yourself—you’re really here! We love this community and we show that love with our businesses, people, charities, churches, and both Chambers of Commerce. Our visitors benefit from this small-town feel. Our community was built on the foundation of military presence and we love our military and their families! Want to see that in action? Be here in September for the 25+ mile parade route lined with people waving flags, cheering and welcoming visiting military families with the Warrior Beach Retreat. Being dedicated to our community, we want it to improve with more attractions to help PCB become a year-round destination. Kartona the Electric Speedway did just this in June; a local family launched a new business with the ability to operate year-round, in rain or shine. Our group would also like to see more large employers relocate to our area; this is music to the ears of the Bay Economic Development Alliance. Becca Hardin and the staff at the EDA work hard on this, every day. Have a business located elsewhere? Call Becca and start a conversation. Instead of just visiting, imagine LIVING here! When was the last time your employees went to the beach? Ask them, they remember. Now ask them if they would like to live there. That’s exactly what MultiStone did, opening their third location in PCB. About a dozen of the Ambassadors responding to my call relocated here in the past few years, myself included. Bay County is a demographic melting pot with the ability to adapt the workforce to an employer’s needs. This community supports itself, come join us. The Ambassador group assists our community in multiple ways. Want to be a part of this? I encourage you to become an Ambassador. For more information, visit pcbeach.org/ambassadors-committee or call the Chamber at (850) 235-1159.

AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT | KATHIE KERN Kathie Kern is an Employment Specialist and Community Relations Liaison at The Arc of the Bay (St. Andrew Bay Center). She helps the most special people in the world find jobs. The Arc of the Bay is a non-profit organization that has been helping people with disabilities in Bay County for over sixty years. Kathie is a native of Bay County and graduated from Bay High School. After school, she moved to Arizona where she worked as a sales manager for a major beauty manufacturer for over thirty years. In 2005, she moved back ‘home’ to Panama City and opened a small restaurant which she ran for over eight years. After selling the restaurant, she was blessed to be asked to join The Arc of the Bay/St. Andrew Bay Center team and continues to be blessed each and every day by the clients she works with and loves. Kathie is proud to be serving the community by being a part of the programs at The Arc of the Bay, by participating in the various ministries of Lynn Haven United Methodist Church, by serving with the Emerald Coast Business Women’s Association and by being involved in the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce as an Ambassador. When she’s not looking for jobs for the clients of The Arc of the Bay, she enjoys square and round dancing (where she met her husband), kayaking and spending time with her family and friends. Annually, the Florida Economic Development Council recognizes the achievements of Florida's top economic developer and top workforce professional. The Toni Jennings Workforce Professional of the Year award is given in recognition of the achievements of an outstanding workforce developer within the state of Florida. The award was first presented in 2007 to honor and recognize the former Lieutenant Governor's exceptional leadership in revamping Florida's workforce system to respond to critical workforce needs and to advance local, regional, and state economic development. The 2018 recipient of the Toni Jennings Workforce Professional of the Year is Mrs. Kim Bodine, Executive Director of CareerSource Gulf Coast. Mrs. Bodine was nominated by her Board Chairperson, Jennifer Conoley who is an Economic Development Representative with Gulf Power Company. Mrs. Bodine has 26 years of experience in workforce development and oversees the administration of as many as 45 funding streams and programs with annual budgets of up to thirteen million dollars. Throughout her tenure, she has been instrumental in launching and participating in numerous workforce projects that assisted underserved populations as well as employers. a strong believer in the life changing benefit of having a good job. Over the course of her career her organization has placed thousands of residents into high-paying employment. Mrs. Bodine has also been a committed leader in the establishment and implementation of Alignment Bay County, an effort to align community organizations and resources with a common goal of supporting the academic and life success of our youth. Mrs. Bodine currently serves as President of the Florida Workforce Development Association, representing workforce board leadership statewide. Because economic development plays a vital role in determining what workforce development programs should be offered, she serves in many active roles in the community and region. She is the Secretary of the Bay County Economic Development Alliance, as well as a member of Florida’s Great Northwest, the Northwest Florida Manufacturing Council, the Restore Council of Bay County, Opportunity Florida and the Gulf County Economic Development Council. Additionally, she serves on the: Bay, Franklin, Gulf Healthy Start Coalition, ARC of the Bay, UF/IFAS Bay County Extension Advisory Board, and the Governing Board of Alignment Bay County.

held their Annual Dinner – and it was another fantastic event. Governor Scott spoke about the importance of state colleges supporting military students, and actor Michael Papajohn was honored as the Distinguished Alumnus while IT business owner Timothy Garner was named the Rising Star Alumnus. The highlight of the evening was the testimony of a young man who came to GCSC after several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now an alumnus and current Auburn student, he talked about how the military affairs staff and faculty at GCSC helped him succeed and overcome the challenges he and others face when returning to civilian life. He also spoke about the overwhelming support from the community for the Foundation’s “Thanks a Million” campaign. As of this writing, almost $1,000,000 has been raised to help military students who might need a “hand up” when they’ve run out of other resources to attend GCSC, and the campaign is still going strong. The Armed Forces Day celebration, new MVRC and “Thanks a Million” campaign are just a few ways that Gulf Coast State College can honor and give back to those who have selflessly served us, and we’re privileged to have the opportunity to serve them! These ceremonies were unforgettable experiences and as a “militaryfriendly” institution, we are fully dedicated to our armed services personnel, veterans and their families.

CITY OF PANAMA CITY BEACH Life is just better at the beach. Especially in beach season, but our definition of beach season is expanding. People love the beach, and each year millions of visitors choose the white, sandy beaches of Panama City Beach for their vacations. Our beach continues to be a destination for families, reunions, weddings, festivals and sports tournaments. Those of us who call Panama City Beach home gladly share with our visitors what we enjoy all year round – abundant sunshine, the sugar white sand so fine that it squeaks under bare feet, the emerald green waters of the Gulf and the rhythmic, calming sound of the waves. A day at the beach is truly a good day for the soul. While we are in the midst of our beach season and we welcome many families to the area, we recognize that our summer tourist season has expanded greatly since we made much-needed changes to clean up our Spring Break reputation. Since we began promoting Panama City Beach as a family-friendly destination, not only are families flocking here during June, July and August, but they have found our expanded seasons – to include spring and fall – as an

The construction of the Panama City Beach Sports Complex off East Panama City Beach Parkway, the multiple softball, baseball, soccer and multi-purpose fields and swimming facilities at Frank Brown Park are seeing more and more usage. The popularity of travel team tournaments and youth sports leagues keep our Parks & Recreation staff hopping. We currently have major ball tournaments booked 11 months out of the year. It is conceivable that some of these sports tourists have never visited our city before. It is also very likely that they will fall in love with the world’s most beautiful beaches, and they will definitely be back. Panama City Beach has always been a great place to bring the family and it will remain so. We continue to see strong growth in residential and commercial development in the city. More hotels, condos, apartment complexes, single-family housing, retail, large-scale amusements and attractions are being built. All of these will bring even more people to our city as visitors and permanent residents. Nine months out of the year, our temperature averages 72 degrees and above. In Panama City Beach, beach season has expanded.

With summer in full swing, the halls at FSU Panama City have come alive with a new generation of students eager to learn and explore new concepts. Over the course of the summer break, our STEM Institute will welcome about 250 K-12 students during week-long summer camps to test physics principles through dance, explore the mechanics of diving and analyze trace evidence at a crime scene. Camps like these are vital for our region as students reinforce skills taught during the school year. The interactive experiments and lessons put complex concepts in a real-world setting to allow students to better understand them long-term. This, in turn, helps students excel academically and share their interests with other students. Over the past decade, more than 2,000 students have participated in the camps, igniting a lifelong passion for STEM subjects and continued education. The STEM Institute was created in 2007 to provide educators with professional skills, create learning opportunities for K-12 students, cultivate regional partnerships and develop new education programs. It became an official Florida State University institute in 2011.

VISIT PANAMA CITY BEACH

The institute provides the environment and the technical expertise to infuse and to support STEM interest and learning in the region. Whether students are learning in classrooms and laboratories with state-of-the-art technology or exploring the Gulf floor with sidescan radar, the STEM Institute's focus remains on capturing student interest in STEM careers. As technology advances worldwide, understanding STEM concepts will become more important in the job market. According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17 percent, while others are growing at 9.8 percent. To keep the region’s STEM learning new and exciting, the summer camps also train teachers. After their own camp, these educators pass along their skills to students with the help of area STEM professionals. Engineers, scientists and other volunteers share their field experiences with the educators during camp activities to help enhance classroom experiences throughout the school year. We believe in promoting educational excellence through providing educators with professional skills, creating quality learning opportunities for K-12 students, cultivating regional partnerships and developing new STEM education programs. For more information about the STEM Institute, visit our website at pc.fsu.edu/stem.

As a strong spring season comes to a close in Panama City Beach, the destination looks forward to a busy, action-packed summer for its visitors and their families. Spring was proven to be successful, as the destination saw 9.9 percent increase year to date and a 15 percent boost for the month of April. Over a 25 percent increase was seen in March 2018, and a 4.9 percent increase in April, due to a combination of targeted digital marketing campaigns, strong events, and increase in development throughout the beach. Panama City Beach has seen growth within the non-summer months, and continues to develop in to a year-round destination for families to enjoy throughout the year. Drawing visitation, with the spring and summer months, is the framework for a year round destination; however, the heart and soul of the tourism economy is the summer months, providing over 2.7 billion dollars of total economic impact

to our area. Over the past ten years, we have seen these numbers double, growing 3.5 times faster than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With the summer season in full gear, we focus on the most significant season for travelers to visit the beach. Last year, we welcomed over 17 million visitors to our sugar white sand and turquoise green waters, and saw over 1.63 billion dollars in visitor spending. It comes as no surprise that summer marks the busiest season in Panama City Beach. During the summer, visitors spend on average over $6.6 million per day in Panama City Beach businesses. Visitor spending is a key economic driver, for Panama City Beach and provides the livelihood for thousands of Bay County residents. With tourism impacting each corner of the community, the summer months serve as the benchmark for our economy.

BAY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ALLIANCE December and January temperatures in Bay County are quite cool, commonly ranging in the 40’s and 50’s. However even with these mild conditions, one thing is certain, Bay County residents long for the warmer spring and summer days. Patience is needed during the winter season; however, we are certain March and April will bring back warm days. This required patience is known to all residents in our community because it is well worth the wait of living in paradise. When it comes to economic development, our community leaders are also dedicated, committed, and patient on impactful projects. In early May, community leaders throughout Bay County were able to see their dedication and commitment to an economic development project come to fruition. Project Gorrie, a project that had been in existence since 2015 was finally announced at our May Investors Meeting. The company, Air Temp, will be hiring 50 employees in Bay County, with plans to grow even larger after the first phase of the project is complete. In regard to our local economy, this means an additional $1.87 million in annual payroll from direct Air Temp employees. These positions will also include a benefit package in addition to the payroll. Air Temp is an advanced manufacturing operation in the automotive sector. The company is a Tier-1 supplier to Volkswagen, Nissan, Ford, and several other car manufacturers. According to

research completed by Deloitte, a global financial and consulting firm, for every dollar spent in manufacturing, another $1.81 is added to the economy—the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector. The jobs multiplier effect is even more impactful, according to IMPLAN, for every job created in manufacturing, four additional jobs are created else where in the economy. The location of Air Temp in Bay County represents a $6 million investment in phase one. The location is also ideal for putting investment back into a prime growth area of Panama City and bringing a vacated building back into service. The multiplier effect on our community will be impactful across many sectors. When Air Temp becomes operational, support companies ranging from local machine shops, maintenance companies, and many others will likely garner new business from Air Temp being in operation. Residential real estate sales are likely to increase due to management personnel being relocated to the area or through new employees finding a stable job in manufacturing. Local companies are already seeing the impact of this project. For example, Bay County contractors and subcontractors are currently pricing work for retrofitting and repairing the building for Air Temp’s manufacturing operation. In the coming weeks new equipment will be delivered and local companies will be completing the handling and installation. In the last 18 months, Bay County has seen numerous economic development successes. The patience and commitment to growth in Bay County is coming to fruition and the wait has proven to be worth it.

BAY COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Summer means sun, sand, and fun for Bay County locals and the hundreds of thousands of tourists we welcome to our beaches each year. But it also brings danger, and it is incumbent upon us to help each other stay vigilant and aware of the risks we face when it comes to beach safety and hurricanes. Bay County began its Lifeguard Program in May 2016, and in the years since, our employees have made hundreds of life-saving rescues. We have on staff seven full-time, U.S. Lifesaving Association-certified lifeguards at both the M.B. Miller Pier and Rick Seltzer Park, with a roving guard who travels back and forth between the locations. Through May of this year, Bay County lifeguards have made 57 60

primary rescues, rescues within 150 feet of a lifeguard tower. They made 31 secondary rescues, or rescues outside of the area, primarily within the five miles between parks. This year, the program began in April and will continue through September, with some lifeguarding activities continuing on weekends into October. Lifeguards are on the sand on the countymanaged beaches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, making rescues and working to educate the public about rip currents and beach safety measures. Another danger to prepare for is the threat of tropical storms and hurricanes. Please be sure to have a plan in place for your family and your business should disaster strike. Sign up for Bay County’s mass emergency notification system, AlertBay, at alertbay.org. To learn more about how to prepare for hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, please visit floridadisaster.org/getaplan.

THE CIRCUIT July/August 2018

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAMBER REP Ah…summer, the days are longer, the weather is great and people are more social. Technology has enhanced our ability to stay connected all year, from anywhere and everywhere, but there’s still value to be gained by meeting in person. Summer is the perfect time to catch up on face time with contacts, colleagues and prospects. An essential part of business success is having a strong network. Networks are a collection of friends, teammates and acquaintances. And in all good networks, relationships are balanced. People help each other equally and genuinely care about the well-being and success of each other. You need to give to get; networking can’t be one-sided. If you want help from people, you have to help them. One of the most helpful things I think that people can do is connect you with people who are experts in what you’re trying to do. So anytime a friend or acquaintance tells me what they’re working on, I try to think about who I know that might be able to help them. In turn, they do the same for me. Regularly reach out to people in your network. Ask them what they’re up to and how you can help them. That strengthens your relationship and makes it mutually beneficial. I know how easy it can be to hesitate and hope someone guesses what you want. It can feel uncomfortable to ask for help from someone. In order to get what you want, you have to ask for it. It’s better for the other person too because they don’t have to guess what you need and the relationship is more open.

One of the best ways to grow your network is to get out of the office. Often you don’t know what people you need to connect with. If you did, connecting with them would be as easy as shooting off a quick email. In a lot of cases, it’s the unexpected people who will really add to your network. So build strong relationships with people in all aspects of your life. You’ve heard the term “Membership has its privileges,” and with your Beach Chamber membership, that’s certainly true.
