LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Cheers to one year of working on The Circuit! I started this journey one year ago, with the “Dining & Entertainment” issue being my first magazine ever. One year later, I can say that I have learned so much, and I am so excited to continue this journey. I have been spoiled working at the Beach Chamber because we get the opportunity to try so many awesome restaurants with all of the events we have. The “Dining & Entertainment” issue is great because we highlight all of our members in the restaurant industry plus events that get you excited for spring and summer. Being born and raised in Bay County, I like to think that I know all of the best restaurants in the area but working on this edition always reminds me that I have so many more to visit and dishes to try. My hometown is known for fresh seafood and gorgeous views, but we have something to please everyone's taste buds. Whether you are looking for oysters, soul southern food, Cajun flare, Italian cuisine, sushi, or hibachi, our membership directory can help you narrow down your decision. Panama City Beach doesn’t only have good food, but we also have a lot of fun things going on here, and there is no better way to kick off spring than attending UNwineD! This two-day food and wine festival takes place at Aaron Bessant Park on March 22nd and 23rd. This event features superb craft beer, spirits and wine from around the world, culinary creations by Northwest Florida’s leading chefs, and live musical performances by Brandi Carlile and JOHNNYSWIM. I encourage you to purchase your tickets as soon as possible because this event is one you do not want to miss, and the food and wine are major selling points for me! Whether you are a local or are vacationing here, I urge you to get out and try new places because no matter what you’re in the mood for, I can assure you that you will find something fun and delicious close by. I encourage you to check out page 25 where we provide a list of our members who are in the dining and entertainment industry. That will make your decision process a little easier.

DISPELLING A MYTH LEFT IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE MICHAEL The myth that has many patients worried: Physicians have left the area after Hurricane Michael. Some physicians have had to relocate to nearby towns due to their losses, but many of our local physicians have done everything in their power to stay. In fact, there is a much larger number of physicians that have remained and are currently practicing. Many of the physicians in the area have established deep roots in the community. You can find us through Emerald Coast Medical Association. Like the rest of the community, we are trying to repair or rebuild our homes and offices. We have children that are in our schools that suffered damage. Some of us have had to scrounge to find new housing and now deal with a longer than usual commute. Some of us have even had to relocate our practices. We may have newly updated contact information, but we are here, and we want to help. There is a core of excellent physicians representing every specialty that have a vested interest in the health of this community. We have established long term friendships with our employees and our patients. We are determined to provide a high level of care through the recovery process. The overall health of the community is a vital part of the recovery process. Thankfully, we are still able to provide the level of care we offered before the hurricane. I encourage everyone in the community to maintain a focus on their health. Preventative health is still extremely important. Reach out to your primary care physicians and make sure you are up to date on your healthcare.

How do I find my physician if they’ve moved? Visit 850docs.com to search through our database of Emerald Coast Medical Association physicians. Our physicians are listed by specialty and searchable by name or practice name. Each listing provides notes on updated locations, contact information, and whether the physician or practice is currently accepting new patients. We are now even in the process of establishing a dedicated phone line to direct patients to the appropriate source of medical care they require. More updates on this new service will soon be announced on 850docs.com. At Emerald Coast Medical Association, we take healthcare and community very seriously, so we are dedicated to continuing to improve the experience and ease of our local patient base, making appropriate healthcare more easily accessible for all. Make sure to join our newsletter mailing list and follow Emerald Coast Medical Association on social media for regular updates.

he area’s premier spring event will return to the shores of Panama City Beach on March 22-23 big-

ger and better than ever before. “Each year it evolves,” said Patrick Stewart, sports and special events operations manager at Visit Panama City Beach. “There will be new products, and we are adding quite a bit of space and added new amenities for visitors to enjoy, so I think people will be a little more comfortable and not feel so shoulder-toshoulder.”

This year’s festival comes only five months after Panama City area was hit by Hurricane Michael, and a portion of the festival proceeds will benefit World Central Kitchen and United Way of Northwest Florida — two organizations that have served the area tirelessly in the wake of the storm. Organizers are also expanding the festival’s scope by adding fine art — a request from festival goers — to the UNwineD mix. This year’s event will include an art show juried by Beach Arts Group of Panama City Beach.

Guests will have a chance to sip and discuss the evolution of O’Brien’s signature creations. Although the true stars of UNwineD are the adult beverages and gourmet snacks, event organizers have worked hard to provide an equally compelling musical component at its increasingly popular Picnic in the Park & Concert. “A lot of these are regional brewers and wine vendors,” Stewart said. “We’re trying to show people what the Panama City Beach area has to offer.” More than 40 different brands and distributors are expected to showcase their wares at the tasting, and the vibe will be one of discovery. “Some of the vendors who are mixing at their booths will have signature cocktails and recipe cards available,” Stewart added. “Distributors are there to show off their products.” UNwineD guests won’t go hungry, either. A variety of local restaurants — including Dovalina’s Catering, Firefly, Runaway Island, Beau’s and Temperley’s British Eatery — will set up at the festival and serve up samples of their signature dishes. “There is no shortage of food for people to eat during the tasting,” Stewart said, adding that the culinary selections will range from local seafood specialties to Southern classics. The tasting will also include four separate culinary demonstrations — one by Gillespie and three by wellknown chefs from local restaurants.

“People attend this event for the experience,” Stewart said. “It’s a really upscale experience, and it gives people the ability to mingle with that chef they love.”

“IT’S JUST AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE BEST THAT PANAMA CITY BEACH HAS TO OFFER — ALL IN ONE LOCATION.” –PATRICK STEWART

The festival’s new art show will serve as the perfect backdrop, featuring roughly 25 local and regional artists who specialize in a variety of mediums. “We have everything from photography to pottery,” Ballance said. “We even have a group of writers. … It should be about celebrating all of the arts!”

The addition of fine art is especially exciting given the hardships left by Hurricane Michael this past October, she said. “People want beauty,” Ballance said. “They want something other than what they are dealing with.” Booths and tables will be set up in a way that encourages interactions between the artists and festival guests. “Art is a relationship between the artist and the collector,” she said. “I’m just excited for the opportunity because one of the things we are working toward is promoting Panama City Beach as an arts destination.” What truly makes UNwineD unique, Balance said, is that it’s a festival for all the senses.

Amazingly natural sound quality plus improved connectivity, make this the best hearing instrument on the market! • Improves hearing in noisy environments • Automatically adapts in different listening situations • Comfortable to wear and virtually invisible

Stewart agreed, noting that the event is only growing in popularity, continuing to pull more than half of its attendees from out of the area. “I get emails from throughout the year from people who want to know about the festival,” he said. “It’s just an exciting opportunity to see the best that Panama City Beach has to offer — all in one location.”

why panama city beach? We can’t wait to open our doors in Panama City Beach and celebrate with all of Paula’s loyal fans, young and old, who live in and visit the Emerald Coast. Paula loves spending time with family and friends at the beach on the Emerald Coast, including Panama City Beach which is one of her favorite places to visit and make cherished memories with friends and family. “We were extremely concerned for the local community and surrounding areas when we saw Hurricane Michael heading for the coast. While the restaurant location in Pier Park was not damaged, the construction workers assigned to the project were deeply affected. We saw how the surrounding and local communities came together and it only confirmed the reason we chose to plant roots in Panama City Beach,” said Rajat Shah, founder and

GULF HIGHLANDS BEACH RESORT BY RESORT COLLECTION Resort Collection®, the industry leader in property management, is pleased to announce its acquisition of Gulf Highlands Beach Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida, as their preferred on-site rental management company. A family-favorite lodging choice in Panama City Beach, Gulf Highlands Beach Resort offers comfortable townhomes and abundant resort amenities. With entrances from both Front Beach Rd. and Hutchison Blvd., the property is located in the heart of the community and offers easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the sandy beach. “This resort is a natural fit for our management portfolio,” said Paul Wohlford, Vice President of Business Development. “The family-friendly atmosphere is a direct correlation to Resort Collection’s mission of building lifelong customers by creating lifelong memories. Gulf Highlands Beach Resort is a great partner to continue in that direction with.” Gulf Highlands Beach Resort is the 13th acquisition for Resort Collection. Their market footprint now includes Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort, Majestic Beach Resort, Continental Condominiums, Long Beach Resort, Shores of Panama, En Soleil Resort, Sunbird Beach resort, Summit Beach Resort, Top of the Gulf, Laketown Wharf, Emerald Beach Resort, and Grandview Beach Resort.

THE LITTLE MUSTARD SEED Greg and Rebecca Snow married in September 2014. At that time, Greg was repurposing and building furniture as a vendor at two local stores, and Rebecca was working as an Occupational Therapist. Little did they know what awaited them only a year later. Through a sequence of events, in September 2015, they took a big leap of faith and opened their business The Little Mustard Seed. Their mission was to be a light in the community providing a unique and fun retail experience. This artisan market located in the heart of downtown Panama City offered a variety of found, new, repurposed, handcrafted, and made in the USA goods created by an amazing group of local talent. One year after opening, in October 2016, the Snows were given the opportunity to purchase the beautiful, old JC Penney building so they took another leap and opened their very own store. Sadly, as with everyone, October 2018 was a major turning point in their lives. In the days after Hurricane Michael, they were contemplating permanently closing or moving closer to family and starting over in a new city. But their mission wasn’t over! The desire to be a part of the greatest recovery story to be told, gave them the drive to roll up their sleeves and rebuild better than before. They are proud to announce The Little Mustard Seed will have their Grand Reopening May 1st!

IDEACAMP INSPIRE • ENERGIZE • IGNITE BY MICHAEL CALIDONNA

IdeaCamp at its core is an opportunity for Chamber members to get together to share problems and explore solutions. The format is laid back, with social time where somebody shares an idea, concept, or problem with the group for a few minutes, we then enjoy some light food and networking time, and finish with regrouping to explore the topic a bit further. The venue changes every month, to give a variety of members the opportunity to showcase their space and food. We have met in coffee shops, restaurants, real estate offices, and a few have been outside. IdeaCamp is always fun, and we are part of a great Chamber with interactive people. IdeaCamp is a unique Chamber event, and we encourage a group exploration of timely topics. I have been challenged a few times with other people’s points a view. We have had events consist of a panel discussion generations in the workforce and how to encourage employees no matter their age or generation work together. I learned how my actions and intentions might not come across the same way to various age groups. We kicked off IdeaCamp with a strong start this year! Our first meeting took place at The Arc of The Bay where the Mayor of Lynn Haven, Margo Anderson spoke. Mayor Anderson was an inspiration, and we all enjoyed hearing her experiences and steps she took to get Lynn Haven back on its feet following Hurricane Michael. The committee seeks to keep this event both relevant and enjoyable. We encourage feedback, and we look for new ideas to present. If you are facing a “unique” situation, bring it to us, and we may be able to put it on the list. We meet the last Wednesday of the month at various locations throughout Bay County, and the topics will be

KIM BODINE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

There is no denying, Bay County is largely influenced by its leisure and hospitality industry. This little slice of heaven we call home is recognized as a worldwide travel destination, bringing in millions of visitors each year (over 17 million visitors in 2018 alone). The need for talent in this industry directly reflects the demand for such services in Bay County, specifically the areas of art, entertainment, recreation and food service. We are entering the time of year when we see the leisure and hospitality industry explode. Even though we are not sure how the impact of Hurricane Michael will affect our largest industry sector, come March, we expect the employment within this industry to be in highest-demand until mid-September. Even with the lasting impact of Hurricane Michael on our community, areas of Bay County are making preparations for what the locals call “tourist season.” What is there to learn about the leisure and hospitality industry from a job-seeker perspective? One can benefit greatly through a profession in this industry. Whether an individual chooses to work in this sector temporarily, or develop it into a career, there are many soft skills to be

gained: customer service, communication, cultural awareness, flexibility, and multitasking to name a few. In addition to soft skills, those employed in this industry may pursue opportunities for advancement. Supervisor and management positions can offer promising careers, and the opportunities are available in Bay County. In fact, the leisure and hospitality industry is projected to grow 10.6% in the coming years, and 12.7% for management-related industries. Those interested in receiving formal hospitality and management training can do so at Gulf Coast State College and FSU Panama City, furthering the opportunity to advance in these industries. CareerSource Gulf Coast has knowledgeable staff ready to help you with career counseling, resume building/interview assistance and job leads. However you choose to connect, we are here for you! walk up from the beach in your bathing suit, and places with a little more ambiance for date night. A lot of our restaurants cater to families and many of them are more popular with the night crowd.

What kind of food and dining experience are you looking for? Whatever it is, you can find it in Panama City Beach.

Diners have a lot of choices, so the restaurants that stay in business are known for good food, great service, and a unique experience that visitors remember from visit to visit and will return to.

When it comes to entertainment and dining on the beach, what we have is a lot of options, as you would expect from a tourist destination. There is great diversity in the kinds of activities and restaurants available here.

The beach pulls such a diverse crowd – Canadian visitors, families from the Midwest, Southern college students and young couples. Having diversity in restaurants means there is something for everyone and our guests and locals can have a different kind of experience every night.

Being in the restaurant business, I know that we have a large number of restaurants per capita, which is a challenge as an owner. For our dining guests, it makes for a unique experience with a wide range of restaurant choices. We have magnificent seafood restaurants with fresh local catch, great steak houses, ethnic food, and country cooking establishments. The beach is home to many national chains and many mom-and-pop family restaurants. We have white linen establishments and fast food. We have restaurants that are just opening and those that have been here for more than 30 years. We offer many different dining experiences. Places where you can

Entertainment is pretty much the same. What I love about the beach is that there are fresh water, salt water and wooded hunting areas all within 15 minutes of each other. Additionally, we have many attractions that cater to families, ranging from video games and movies to go-carts and bowling. But the greatest form of entertainment is found on the world’s most beautiful beaches in the form of swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing and more. There are tons of things to do on our white sandy beach.

For more than 60 years, Gulf Coast State College has grown and expanded during the good times while standing tall against inevitable adversities like economic downturns and budget cuts. None, however, have impacted the College, nor the community, more than the catastrophic force of Hurricane Michael. In the days and weeks following the storm, Gulf Coast State College’s mission was straightforward – help create a sense of normalcy by returning students to their classes. Executing that mission, however, was extremely complex and multifaceted, and remains a challenge even several months after. The College’s Panama City Campus sustained damage to all of its buildings with varying levels of wind and water damage to classrooms, labs and offices. We were closed for 27 days, and even when we re-opened on November 5, students and employees returned to a campus completely transformed into a construction zone. The restoration process continues as the repair crews will last well into 2019 as we rebuild along with everyone else in the community. The scope of the devastation was enormous as many students, staff, and faculty suffered losses of everything from textbooks and clothes, to laptop computers and cars. Uninhabitable apartments and homes forced many to seek temporary housing across North-

city of lynn haven

west Florida, which in turn created long distance commutes to work and school. As students and employees began to rebuild their lives, support from across the state and country also began to arrive. Donations of food, supplies and funds poured in and we cannot begin to thank everyone for their generosity. All donations are distributed free to students and employees through what we affectionately call “Michael’s Pantry.” The pantry is stocked with food, water, diapers, personal hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, pet food, household goods, clothes, blankets, school supplies, and more. On the financial side, our GCSC Foundation made an unprecedented commitment with the donation of $1.5 million in relief funds to assist students and keep their goals of higher education alive. More than 1,000 students have applied for emergency grant funds and we will continue to help any student in need in the weeks still to come. Keeping our students’ hopes and dreams alive is a critical step in our community’s path to recovery. Incredibly, almost all of our faculty and staff returned as well as a majority of students who were enrolled in the fall term. The College is not made up of buildings – Gulf Coast State College is comprised of courageous, strong, resilient and creative people who don’t know what the words “quit” and “can’t” mean. We have been tested in ways few in our profession will hopefully ever experience, and we will not let Hurricane Michael define us or stand in the way of our mission of delivering hope and opportunity to our community. We are GCSC Strong!

The City of Lynn Haven has remained resilient even after the destruction of many of the City’s restaurants, businesses, recreation sites, Community Parks, and City facilities. We have found innovative ways to add to the quality of life of all Citizens. New “Now Open” signs are emerging weekly. This growing list of available restaurants and businesses are giving additional hope that one day we will be able to restore our great City to pre-hurricane conditions, but even better. In addition to placing signage notifying customers they are now open, the City has also encouraged these businesses and helped them to market their businesses to customers creatively. The City has been inventive in making sure there are diverse options available. For instance, pop up restaurants like the Prime Rib Guy, who are not readily available in Lynn Haven, offer Citizens new experiences, places and variety. Local family-owned businesses, such as beloved bakeries reopening, have brought back a much needed bliss in Lynn Haven; adding normalcy along with the recovery process. From youth sports to concert series, Lynn Haven will continue to be one of the destination spots for entertainment. One of the most prominent events scheduled is the 2nd Annual Spring Concert Series. This much anticipated series will offer a relaxing night for all of Lynn Haven and the surrounding communities. This eight-week long Spring Concert Series will be from April 5th to May 24th from 6:00

p.m. - 8:00 p.m. every Friday night in Sharon Sheffield Park. Each week an artist from different genres will perform. Local vendors will also be available for food and beverage purchases during the concert. For further information on band lineups, vendor applications, and more visit our website, cityoflynnhaven.com and be sure to follow us on Facebook. Sponsors always play an important role in events like these, but now more than ever they are needed to continue Community events. For questions on events or if you are interested in sponsoring an event please reach out to our Marketing and Communication team at communications@cityoflynnhaven.com or by phone at (850) 265-2121. In Lynn Haven we always ensure that the area’s youth is a priority. Saturdays are now for youth flag football. The Lynn Haven Youth Flag Football league has been offered completely free of charge to children throughout Bay County presenting an outlet for healthy, safe outside play. This completely recreational league will be games only and operated solely by volunteers from referees, coaches and concession stand workers who are making it happen for our youth. We encourage the entire community to come out and cheer on the players and volunteer coaches. We will continue to restore leagues where possible and we will be posting additional league registrations as their respective seasons come closer on lhrecreation.com. Donations/sponsorships for leagues are needed to continue hosting a variety of sports leagues. For anyone interested in sponsoring a league, please reach out to tholmes@cityoflynnhaven.com. FSU Panama City has come a long way since it began offering local courses in 1983. What started as a campus focused on education, business and social work has evolved with the times, now offering more technology-based programs, such as computer science. After two decades of advancing and honing the curriculum, our computer science program has expanded with emerging technology to offer a variety of programming languages such as C, C++, Assembly Language, Java, C#, Ada, Lisp, Scheme, Prolog, Perl and HTML. It also emphasizes soft skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving.

problems in creative ways. From smartphones to websites, programmers are behind the scenes changing the way people share information and view the world. It is the future. As our world relies more on digital technology, businesses need employees who are able to create smart solutions to technical problems. People with this expertise are in demand with job availability expected to grow 24 percent – much faster than average – in the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It also is a lucrative field with the median annual wage for computer programmers at $82,240 in May 2017. The highest 10 percent earn more than $132,530.

The program also has grown to welcome on-campus and online students, with students across the globe benefitting from the expertise of FSU Panama City faculty. The distance-learning program is currently ranked No. 2 best online computer science bachelor’s program by BestColleges.com.

As we see more computer science students walk the stage with a prestigious Florida State degree, they will go on to do great things, making strides within the field and boosting the local economy. The local saturation of a well-educated workforce also will be a huge draw to new industry within the region.

With 216 computer science students in fall 2018, it is overwhelmingly our most popular major, which is no surprise as advances in technology require more and more people who are able to pair creativity with logic. Computer science is about more than just coding; it is about solving

bay county board of county commissioners

PHILIP "GRIFF" GRIFFITTS DISTRICT 5

For Bay County residents living on the eastern side of Panama City Beach and on the eastern side of the Hathaway Bridge, it may be difficult to envision emerging from the aftermath of Hurricane Michael bigger and better than before Oct. 10, as much work still remains

ment’s National Disaster Recovery Framework, geared at assisting communities in recovery efforts, including attaining more federal and state money for projects.

But the county’s Long-Term Disaster Recovery Task Force is working hard to ensure all of Bay County will be better off than we were. The group, comprised of elected officials from each of the county’s seven municipalities and the School Board, and chaired by Bay County Commissioner Robert Carroll, is tackling an array of areas of concern, including economic development, health and social services, housing, infrastructure, planning, and natural and cultural resources. Working groups, consisting of members of both the public and private sectors, citizens and nonprofit organizations have been formulating a broad plan with detailed, specific projects geared toward improving the areas of concern.

To aid the task force in clarifying and reaching its goals, the county hired Tallahassee-based The Integrity Group, a team that includes several Bay County natives, including senior partner Gary Yates.

to be done.

The Long-Term Recovery Task Force is part of the federal govern-

Some of the potential projects could include: new roads, bridges and sidewalks; a cruise-ship terminal; “smart” communities with the latest technological advances; more readily accessible wifi throughout the county.

“Our goal is to hear what the community is saying about what’s needed and then behind the scenes work on funding so that we can get every available dollar from every available source,” Yates said, noting that both public and private funding will be crucial to the area’s overall redevelopment. The first thing that comes to mind when you think Panama City Beach is the 27 miles of sugar-white sand, turquoise green waters, and endless options for dining and entertainment. Visitors and locals can enjoy a variety of special events throughout the year, and this Spring is no different! As we enter into our third year of the UNwineD event, we look forward to showcasing some of our destination’s boldest flavors and innovative blends for our visitors and locals to enjoy. Visit Panama City Beach will be continuing their partnership with Southern Living, providing a two-day, elegant garden party for visitors from across the country. This year will bring top savory creations, creative cocktails, and local craft beer and wine options from the South’s leading chefs. For this year’s lineup, we welcome “Top Chef” Finalist Kevin Gillespie of Red Beard Restaurants and Mixologist Mercedes O’Brien. Gillespie and O’Brien, both culinary pros based out of Atlanta, know a thing or two about honest, southern cooking and spirits. Gillespie, the James Beard Award finalist, will be hosting cooking demos on Saturday, while O’Brien will be stirring up a crowd with her passion for creating and discussing the evolution of her signature drinks. For this year’s musical entertainment, we look no further than the

folksy Americana vibe of three-time GRAMMY winner Brandi Carlile and opening performer JOHNNYSWIM. West Coast singer/songwriter and award-winning performer, Brandi Carlile, most recently known for her song, “The Joke,” is up for six Grammy nominations for the songs and scenes she recorded for the film, A Star Is Born. JOHNNYSWIM, a married duo from Nashville, Tennessee will bring the Southern roots to this classic affair. With hits like “Home” and “First Try,” they are sure to set the tone for this unique event with some of today’s best records in this genre. Moving into 2019, Visit Panama City Beach found it important to continue to tell our community’s story and move forward with providing events and entertainment for both locals and visitors to enjoy. New to this year’s event will be the contribution to two very important pieces to our community’s recovery. A portion of the tickets sold to our UNwineD event will go to the United Way of Northwest Florida and World Central Kitchen. We found it fitting to give back to the organizations that have helped our area throughout this past year, and what better way than at our favorite event. Whether you are interested in a taste of PCB, a sip of a fun cocktail or ready to jam out with your closest friends, we can’t wait to host you this March! For more information about UNwineD, March 22nd and 23rd, please visit our website at visitpanamacitybeach.com/unwined. Tickets are on sale now!

JULIE GORDON FILM COMMISSIONER

Hope you’ve been tuned in to the tele because Panama City Beach has been representing! Our good friends from CMT were back to film another HOT TWENTY COUNTDOWN, which showcased some of the best talent from Gulf Coast Jam. Some of the artists took extra time to shoot mini documentaries and short acoustic videos just because Panama City Beach is so inspirational. Then in early November, CMT returned to film some compelling shots of the damage from Hurricane Michael, and it aired in December. The shots they filmed were of how Bay County was able to continue working, albeit in small steps, right alongside some of the worst damage. From the untouched sands of the City Pier and our only dedicated Dog Beach to the completely decimated Mexico Beach, there were signs of life along the way. Shipyard Grill was filmed as Kevin Jacobs sang, right next to the caution tape and boats splintered into pieces. Sisters of the Sea was serving lunch, while from the window, we could see Pirates Cove Marina digging out boats from what appeared to be total wreckage. Meet the Press, The Veep and even the Head of the Oval Office made trips to Bay County to check in on our progress. And while we did make the major network news due to Hurricane Michael, there is much more to our story, as you can tell. Panama City Beach’s sparkling water and pristine beaches have been filmed for media from Visit Florida, to the Canadian Weather Channel, to the World Travel Show in London.

In fact, each year more than 80 of our most talented student performers gather to audition for the annual Arts Alive show which is the signature event of the Bay Education Foundation and is in its ninth year of production in 2019. Arts Alive, which features a dinner and ongoing entertainment by students all evening, typically raises about $40,000 for “scholarships through Florida Prepaid College Foundation for our Take Stock in Children program and funds classroom grants for visual and performing arts classrooms,” according to Foundation Director Janet Kessler. This year’s event, which is always a sellout, includes a reduced ticket price in light of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Michael.

Scorpion Kings, a feature film which is both comedic and thrilling, was filmed at a closed entertainment venue. It was the PERFECT backdrop for the giant scorpions to chase the evil doing teens. Panama City Beach made such an impression that this director is now scouting locations for two new short films. Local and regional production companies have their hands full with loads of commercials from all over the United States and beyond, so if you think you need to hire out of market, look locally. WE are out of market to the rest of the world and have very professional and experienced teams in our own backyard. “Chasin’ The Sun” Fishing Show shared its premiere episode with 50 of their closest friends and Season 4 promises to be a hit with the Discovery Channel viewers. Pin Fish Media is going all out this season and even went to the home of the co-host, Travis Holeman, in the Keys to see how his fishing matches up with our own Justin Leake’s waterways. You’ll have to tune in to see how THAT went. As always, please contact the Film Office if you are approached about filming in your home or business. (Film Commissioner, Julie Gordon, (850) 819-4694 floridafilmoffice@knology.net) Let’s make sure the production company is legit, has insurance, and knows the rules and regs of working in Bay County. See YOU in the Movies!

And it just wouldn’t be right if we went a few months without seeing our friends from HGTV. More shows on Beachfront Bargain Hunt Renovations were filmed in the Eastern part of Bay County, as well as updates on existing episodes.

“We know this event is important to so many people in our community,” Kessler said, “and so we felt it was important this year to make sure that the event was even more accessible than it usually is while still maintaining its ability to serve as a vital fundraiser.” Tickets for the April 6th event, which is held at Edgewater Beach Resort, are $65 each or $850 for a table of eight and can be purchased from Kessler at kessljf@bay.k12.fl.us. While students will be the focus of this particular event, our employees were highlighted at another event that we’ve worked hard to save from the chaos caused by the hurricane. By the time you read this, we will have named our 2018-19 Teacher and Support Employee of the Year for Bay District Schools. This year, just as in years past, the competition was fierce on the school level and even more challenging as the district, with the help of community volunteers, whittling the list to a “Top Five” for each category. While ALL of our employees are deserving of recognition every day, and particularly given all that they have sacrificed since the storm, we are grateful to be able to continue to honor them in this way

thanks to the generosity of sponsors who stepped up this year despite difficult circumstances. Thanks to the St. Joe Community Foundation, Panhandle Educators Federal Credit Union, The News Herald and TGIFridays our employees were celebrated and their incredible contributions to our students were honored. I do encourage each of you to get involved in our schools and to do what you can to support our programs, our students and our educators. Our doors are always open to guest speakers from the

bay economic development alliance In January, we hosted our BayEDA 2018 Annual Meeting. The yearly event provides our organization the opportunity to highlight the successes of our economy from the prior year while also looking forward and showcasing what is on the horizon for Bay County. Due to Hurricane Michael, this year’s format was slightly different. The 2018 Annual Meeting was hosted in conjunction with our 1st quarter Local Industry Luncheon for 2019. For the event, we truly wanted to showcase the resiliency of our local companies in Bay County and their continued commitment to their employees. In the days and weeks that followed Hurricane Michael, the companies in our community had to make difficult decisions regarding the future of their facilities in Bay County. While there are hundreds of stories that could be told, during our Annual Meeting, we were able to share the recovery story of four local companies in our community.

community, to industry experts, to entrepreneurs and others who can help our students make those critical classroom-to-real world connections. Our students need one-on-one mentors (through Bay Education Foundation’s Take Stock or the Elevate Bay initiative through BDS) and our teachers need classroom volunteers. If you have 30 minutes, there’s a classroom of elementary school students who would love you to come and read to them! Please contact the principal of a school near you to find out how you can help.

community. Since the hurricane, SSE retained 99% of their original employees and has hired nearly 20 new employees. The company also worked to secure homes for 30 families that had been displaced by the storm. The stories above are just four examples of what our local industry did to help meet the needs of their companies and employees. The entities above represent a local workforce of approximately 500 employees in Bay County. These companies, like so many others in our area, truly show the resilience of Bay County. At BayEDA, we look forward to 2019 and continuing to make Bay County bigger, better, and stronger.

The first entity we showcased was Port Panama City. The Port has three locations throughout Bay County and each of these locations received damage from Hurricane Michael, totaling approximately $15M worth of damage. However, despite these setbacks, the Port was only out of commission for 7 days post-Hurricane Michael. The Port was able to resume 90% operations within 2 weeks of the storm. They retained all of their customers and all but four of their employees. Port management expects that they will have the repairs completed by mid-2019. Secondly, we showcased Oceaneering. Within days of the storm, Oceaneering was able to mobilize over 100 personnel to the facility to begin repairs. Less than one month after the storm, Oceaneering was able to begin loading out product for a major customer and fulfilling their orders to ensure that the facility remained viable and their workforce stayed in Bay County. Berg Steel Pipe is another existing industry in Bay County that sustained damage to their facilities. Within two weeks of the storm, Berg was back to operating one shift and then returned to normal operation within a month after the storm. To assist employees, Berg provided discounted gas during the work weeks at the facility and had sister facilities donate for employee needs. Additionally, Berg was able to get all their full-time employees back to work.
