LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Do you ever wish you were one of those people that woke up early every morning, drank a green smoothie, and hit the gym all before your workday started? I sure wish I was, but I enjoy making excuses so I can sleep in a little longer! Why do we do that? We make excuses every day, and tell ourselves that we will start tomorrow. These excuses become our reality and before we know it, we have gained a few extra pounds, and have become very unhappy with ourselves. But, we have to remember that we are in control of our health and wellness, and only you can change it if you are unhappy. This might be scary because we have gotten comfortable in the routine of easy meals, or can’t seem to find our tennis shoes and go for a run. Get out of your comfort zone, and make a change for yourself! You’ll be happy you did! We also need to consider our mental health because it is just as important as our physical health. Believe it or not, our mental and physical health go hand in hand, and if one is off it is likely that the other will be off as well. Think about it, if you are overweight and lose your breath walking to your car, you are more likely to end up on your couch after work feeling sorry for yourself. This is when we need to realize that a change must be made, and we can better our health at any age. I believe that consistency is key and I know that people become frustrated when they do not see quick results. However, it is important that we stick to the process because quick results might not always be the healthy option. I bet you are wondering where to start? Our Beach Chamber has many health & wellness members that can help you get on the right track! Whether that is getting a new gym membership or finding a meal plan that works for you, our members are here to help. We also live in a beautiful area, and a sunset walk on the beach can totally count as your workout! All it takes is baby steps and consistency to change your life and make health and wellness a priority, and I hope you find something in this issue that inspires you to do just that! For me, I will be setting a goal to hit the gym before work, and become the person I have always wanted to be! Who wants to join?!

ROYAL AMERICAN BEACH GETAWAYS

REAL MEALS DELIVERED

Royal American Beach Getaways, a Panama City Beach-based rental management company representing more than 200 condominiums, is winning more guest and condo owner smiles with stellar service and guaranteed rental revenue. In 2017, over 72 percent of Royal American guests surveyed found the company’s service to be exceptional or above average. Several of those guests shared specific praise, like Lisa Nash of Cedartown, Georgia, who extolled her getaway’s value: “Cannot say enough about this condo, the facilities or the management company. Contributing to that guest satisfaction is the company’s commitment to deliver more than just a room. Exclusive perks like free drinks, attraction vouchers, and welcome gifts await arriving guests. Company leadership is also winning accolades. Earlier this year, the Florida Vacation Rental Management Association (FVRMA) honored General Manager Lee Ann Leonard with "The 40 Over & Under Award." FVRMA Executive Director Dennis Hanks presented trophies to the 40 winners, aged over and under 40, at the organization's annual conference. The association created the awards to recognize a select group of industry supporters and partners for their contributions to the vacation rental industry. Hanks credited these industry champions with helping the association make Florida the number one state for US vacation rentals.

RESTORE YOUR HAIR

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE

LOCAL SOLUTIONS FOR HAIR LOSS

DEDICATING OVER 5,000 VOLUNTEER HOURS A YEAR

Are you experiencing hair loss or thinning hair? Dermatology Specialists of Florida offers solutions to permanently restore your natural hair, using a range of therapies including a state-of-theart minimally invasive transplant procedure, NeoGraft®, LED Light Therapy using NeoLTS® and PRP injections right here in Bay County through their Hair Transplant and Restoration Center.

The Junior League of Panama City is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. JLPC is comprised of more than 350 Bay County women dedicated to making our community a better place to live. Through community impact placements effecting the lives of families and children in our area, JLPC members dedicate more than 5,000 volunteer hours each year.

“We believe that men and women suffering from hair loss deserve a much more desirable, “minimally invasive,” option than the traditional strip method,” said nurse educator Monica Rennspies. “Our patients appreciate having the procedure done locally without the additional stress of taking time off from work or incurring travel expenses.” For those patients looking for a non-surgical solution to help restore their hair, we also offer platelet-rich plasma injections, also known as PRP. Treatment with PRP is a quick procedure, using concentrated plasma from your own body to stimulate hair growth. These platelets contain your healing growth factors, which work together with your stem cells to reverse the thinning and shrinkage of the hair follicle and jumpstart dormant hair back into the growth phase. For more information visit transplantandrestore.com or call our nurse educator, Monica Rennspies at 850-867-0881 to schedule your complementary hair consult.

Junior League of Panama City Community Impact Placements include: - Child Service Center - Diaper Bank - Elderly Outreach - State and Local Public Affairs Committees - Kids in the Kitchen - Multicultural Education Committee - Girls on the Run - Excellence in Education JLPC is a not for profit community group that is funded through the generosity of our great community. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Junior League of Panama City's Holly Fair (held November 15-18 at Edgewater Beach Resort). The women of JLPC are grateful for the community support and invite you to join us as we embark on another great year of community impact and volunteerism. SECURITY FORCES SQUADRON PARTICIPATES IN ACTIVE-SHOOTER TRAINING By Airman 1st Class Delaney Gonzales, 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

T

he 325th Security Forces Squadron participated in an activeshooter exercise July 31, 2018 at Tyndall Elementary School.

“We have a great partnership with Tyndall Elementary School,” said Senior Master Sgt. Raymond Craig, 325th SFS operations superintendent. “We have worked with them in the past to provide a robust presence at the school. But, this is the first opportunity we have been able to use [simulated ammunition] and use school grounds for active-shooter training.”

The exercise allowed Team Tyndall defenders to approach simulated real-world scenarios in a new environment. Senior leadership from the 325th Fighter Wing to include Col. Jefferson Hawkins, 325th FW vice commander, Maj. Joshua Frizzell, 325th SFS commander, and other notable leaders attended the exercise to observe Security Forces personnel in action. The exercise was the first of its kind at Tyndall Elementary School. Airmen responded to various active-shooter scenarios in a building with an unknown layout. “It is important to use different buildings that we are not familiar with because it helps hone the mental capability of our defenders to be able to react and respond appropriately during uncertain situations and unknown environments,” Craig noted. Security forces personnel scoured the hallways of Tyndall Elementary to seek out potential threats. The training allowed 325th SFS Airmen to practice real-world scenarios; thus,

They are getting better and more comfortable with their weapon every time they do a run through [of the training scenarios].” Each scenario requires a different tactic in order to apprehend the opposing force. “The purpose of training them on active-shooter scenarios is for them to be ready to respond with the appropriate measure of force regardless of the situation at hand,” Craig said. “Whether it’s a minor infraction where we just have to talk to somebody to find a resolution or if it is a situation where we have to match lethal force with lethal force.” The training demonstrated the high-caliber skill sets of Tyndall Security Forces personnel. “The immediate response, the marksmanship and the poise of our Airmen gives me great confidence in their ability to react to like-situations if it were to happen in the real world,” Craig said.

The four elementary schools (Beach, Breakfast Point, Patronis, and West Bay) will each receive 10 backpacks and supplies. The group worked rapidly to collect and distribute the supplies to meet the beginning of the school year deadline. They are extremely proud of the accomplishment and look forward to helping children again next year. “We constantly do these types of charitable contributions and the hope is that next year this will expand,” said Nicole Waters, engineer at NSWC PCD. The division believes in giving back to the public by ensuring students have the necessary resources. NSWC PCD Scientist Dr. Ben Schlorholtz said, “We are very fortunate to have good jobs working for the Navy and we want to contribute to the community.” Through the efforts of the collection team, the needs of many children will be met with the donations.

Regional Medical Center in Panama City, have been designated “Hospitals of the Future.” Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center and other hospitals in the division are equipped with integrated MyCare boards, electronic dashboards that pull from patient records and display information pertaining to diet, tests and caregivers. The MyCare boards have been installed in in-patient rooms and in ER intake rooms. “The boards connect directly to the charting system allowing nurses to begin their shifts without having to manually scribe patient information,” Griffin said.

NOW OPEN NEW! PANAMA CITY BEACH’S ONLY SPECIALIZED MEMORY CARE COMMUNITY!

The board displays names of the three hospital employees who last visited the room, including the time. When a hospital employee wearing an interactive Smart Badge stops by a room, his or her name and title are displayed on the MyCare board. The new technologies fall directly in line with the mission of the company: ‘Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.’” IMOBILE iMobile is a clinical communication platform driven by smartphone technology. It provides for secure texting and Wi-Fi calling and displays information including nurse assignments, patient demographics and the results of lab tests. Advanced Nurse Call employs iMobile wireless integration to route and speed up patient calls, which are received by the nurse assigned to a patient versus being routed through an intermediary central nursing station. An InSites Locate App, also designed for use on iMobile devices, displays the location of tagged pieces of equipment including wheelchairs and IV pumps so that they can be swiftly found by the caregivers needing them. Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center is now using iMobile, a smartphone platform that allows nurses, doctors and other clinicians to connect and share patient information securely, efficiently and immediately. The iMobile application gives caregivers the ability to send secured text messages, initiate phone calls, view a list of contacts and send broadcasts to the patient care team. Since this team is the patient’s most valuable resource while in the hospital, secure coordination using a smartphone loaded with the iMobile application is expected to improve the quality of patient care.

Seagrass Village offers the only free-standing Memory Care Community in the area, exclusively dedicated to residents with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Our specially trained staff is committed 24/7 to providing an environment that is compassionate and caring.

“Having these new technological advances equips us for even greater patient care and the overall patient experience. did not grow up being an athlete. Outside of one season of track in high school, there was nothing. In

that season, I didn’t compete in races and was basically, terrible. I think it was a mix of the fear of failure and my perceived lack of ability that really held me back; college definitely followed the same trend. But getting older, I knew I needed to stay fit and active. This occasionally led me to find fitness classes that were interesting to me. I basically spent my time as a "cardio bunny." I had the common fear that lifting weights would make me big, bulky, and "manly." I really enjoyed the group fitness aspect but it was ALWAYS group fitness classes; I never would branch out. There is nothing wrong with group classes but there was something wrong with me never expanding my fitness repertoire. Knowing what I know now, nothing grows in the comfort zone. Over the years I never really saw my body change into what I visualized it being and because of that, I never stuck with anything for a long period of time. After losing my mother in 2011, and then my father in 2013 both to cancer, I knew I wanted to do something to help people. So I wanted to find holistic ways to cure cancer and disease. I debated back and forth to go into nursing but just didn't feel the passion or drive to follow through and commit.

The ketogenic diet has caught a lot of attention recently for several reasons. It started out as a therapeutic diet for children with seizures almost 100 years ago. In the 1970’s, Dr. Atkin’s popularized it as a way to jump start weight loss. Anyone with neurological diseases like autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s Disease would also greatly benefit as well.

The problem is now that our Standard American Diet (SAD) is very high in carbs like sugar and bread, we are getting too many carbs and this excess is being stored as fat. When one cuts out the excess carbs, fat will be used for energy in the form of ketones, creating weight loss, improved blood sugar, less

Intermittent fasting (IF) has also been a buzz recently as well. Dr. Bredesen has shown that Alzheimer’s can be reversed by identifying the causes of Alzheimer’s disease. Once your child begins to run, climb, and fall, small yet significant traumas (micro-traumas) can occur. These micro-traumas add up over time, creating subluxations and dysfunction within the spine. This is a period of rapid growth and development for your child, making it important not to neglect these injuries, as they can lead to more serious health issues down the road.

Having your child regularly checked by a chiropractor can identify and correct these problems early in life. Parents report a wide range of benefits with regular chiropractic care. Some parents bring their kids in with symptoms and report things like improved allergies and asthma, improved ear infections, and better performance in school. Other parents just want to make sure their kids are functioning at their best from the very beginning.

While much of healthcare takes a reactive approach, our approach is much different. Rather than waiting for a symptom to show up and then trying to treat that symptom, we focus on how the body is functioning. Weakness in the pelvic floor can lead to problems in any of these areas, but what causes the pelvic floor to become weak in the first place? Typical reasons for weakness include pregnancy, our genetics, menopause, and high impact exercises, like running. Other reasons for pelvic floor weakness include: • Lack of exercise of the pelvic floor muscles and stretching out of the weakened tissue • Recurrent straining during bowel movements • Being overweight • Chronic cough • Diseases like diabetes that affect the nerves • Heavy lifting or heavy exercise Pelvic floor exercises can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and help lessen the bothersome symptoms. Kegel exercises specifically target the muscles in this area, and can help to lessen some types of accidents.

• • • • •

Weakening of the pelvic floor can cause prolapse of the uterus or vaginal tissues. If prolapse is causing symptoms, this can be treated with a pessary, a device that is inserted to provide support. A pessary is an especially good option for women who do not want or are unable to have surgery. Surgery is considered usually after pelvic floor exercises and pessary have failed or pessary is not desired. Surgery for prolapse is also usually reserved for women who do not want to have any more children. A trending and more popular option among our patients, however, is Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PMFT). PMFT is a painless, non-surgical option for retraining your pelvic floor muscles that control bladder, bowel, and sexual function. Up to 75-90% of patients treated obtain significant improvement or cure with this therapy. It is currently indicated for multiple common conditions related to weakening of the pelvic floor, including urinary incontinence, overactive bladder/urinary frequency, urgency, chronic pelvic pain, fecal incontinence, and chronic constipation. Speak to your provider or OB/ GYN to see if you are a candidate or if you would like to be evaluated for this therapy or any pelvic floor disorders.

oday in America it is estimated that there are over 150 million cats and dogs living in our

household as pets. This does not include other animals and the huge epidemic we currently have with stray/feral animals around the country. The practice of veterinary medicine has grown exponentially in the last 30 years and animals today are often as much a part of the family as their human counterparts. Pets play an important role in companionship as well as for emotional support. The pet industry in and of itself including veterinary medicine is a multi-billion-dollar industry and there are a lot of companies getting their share of the economic gains. Pet food, veterinary

care that can be customized to your pet’s needs. Do they offer emergency care or overnight monitoring and if not, do they have a good standing relationship with a clinic that does and can offer that to you if needed. Do they advocate good client education and do you actually get to see the doctor during routine wellness visits. Vaccines while important have become so ingrained as the only reason pet owners need to go to the vet, that people often don’t understand the importance of physical exams, fecal analysis, routine bloodwork, etc. The physical exam and histories are how we help give your pet a voice and determine if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed. A thorough exam from head to tail should be performed on your pet at least once a year and I prefer twice yearly especially in our senior pets. We always recommend annual bloodwork and urinalysis as they can also be extremely helpful in assessing your pets’ health. This means more than just a heartworm test. These panels usually include a chemistry panel, CBC, electrolytes, and thyroid screen. This may seem unnecessary to some clients and even some vets, but until our pets start talking, it’s the best way to uncover disease. Animals by nature can hide illness and appear normal. Sometimes it’s not until that disease is advanced that we see clinical signs. Also your vet should be assessing your animals’ oral health. This is extremely important as its safe to say that not many people brush their pets’ teeth daily so animals are very prone to dental disease. Dental disease can ultimately lead to issues in the rest of the body so make sure your vet is providing good oral care. Today’s veterinary medicine is evolving quickly as people demand more of their animals heath care. This has created a new surge of specialty medicine over the last 20 years that has really elevated the care our animals can receive. Make sure your vet has a working relationship with a specialist should your pet ever need it. We rely on specialists in the human medical field and our pets are no different. With technology we are even able to send x-rays, ultrasounds, ECG’s to cardiologist and radiologist for interpretation and speak with internists and oncologists about bloodwork and treatment recommendations. When choosing a veterinarian or providing veterinary care for your pet everyone has to adhere to their budget and this may have influence on your choice of veterinarian. This is an area I get

Each clinic is its own business and therefor has its own overhead costs and budgets. Every doctor has their own vision of how they will elect to practice medicine. Some practices run on a high volume low cost model, others on a lower volume higher cost model, and then there are those in between. What many people do not understand about veterinary medicine is that Veterinarians go through 4 years of medical school just as an M.D. does. Veterinarians can do internships, residencies, fellowships, and become specialists in all fields. Despite veterinarians having

WORKOUT

ANYTIME

“NORM!” If you’ve ever seen the TV show Cheer’s, you know exactly what everyone yelling “Norm” signifies. Our goal at Workout Anytime to be the fitness equivalent of Cheers. “Where everybody knows your name,” maybe you’re old enough to remember how the song goes? I’ve been asked several times what do we do at Workout Anytime. At first I was perplexed; Isn’t it right there in the name, Workout Anytime? Then I thought, maybe it’s not clear, so after a few seconds the answer was easy. We provide trust, build relationships, boost confidence, give hope, self-esteem and a better quality of life. All of that cleverly disguised as a 24-hour fitness community under one roof. Workout Anytime is a national fitness franchise with 168 locations across the country. It’s really a simple concept; provide a quality facility, the best equipment and expert coaching to help people change their lives for the better. I became part of the Workout Anytime family while working for the State Department in Baghdad, Iraq. It was a choppy, delayed skype call with Workout Anytime founders Steve Strickland and John Q. They assured me that even though I knew nothing about the fitness industry, they would give me the tools to be successful. I had spent many years in Law Enforcement, first here in Bay County and then with Uncle Sam in the middle east. What did I know about the gym business? But I trusted Steve and John and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Workout Anytime in Panama City Beach opened in 2012 and since then we’ve opened another 14 locations across Florida. Workout Anytime is a family and all you need is the decision to start. When you do, we’re here for you 24/7. Come see us and together we can change your life; it all starts when you do.

REDISCOVER LIFE BY UNCOVERING THE SOUNDS YOU’VE BEEN MISSING.

Hearing Loss is the number one disability in the world. Over 36 million Americans of all ages suffer from hearing loss. Hearing Loss is not life threatening, but the effects can be just as extreme, causing isolation, frustration, and often times triggering depression and embarrassment. Untreated hearing Loss can even increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Talena discussed the importance of disaster preparedness, what to take with you if there is a need to evacuate, and what to do if your home or business is impacted. Another common issue in our region is mold, due to high humidity. We often think hurricanes and flood can wreak havoc but mold can be very dangerous and expensive to clean up as well. Thank you to Talena for taking the time to come speak with our young professionals and help us and our companies be more prepared in the future. Fall is here, football is on again and 2018 is slowly coming to an end but there are still plenty of HYPE events scheduled for the rest of the year. COMMITTEE UPDATES | IDEACAMP

IDEACAMP INSPIRE. ENERGIZE. IGNITE. BY MARTA ROSE-THORPE

O

n June 27, the Beach Chamber held its monthly IdeaCamp at Beachy Beach Real Estate. Bay County Tax Collector Chuck Perdue discussed Company Culture and shared his beliefs about what this means. Of course, the word “Culture” means different things to different people. To Chuck, “Culture” refers to how people choose to live and behave each day; it’s the mindset they choose to embrace. When he first arrived at the Tax Collectors Office, Chuck saw the need for many changes. Over the months he created a shared set of agreed-upon beliefs that would govern the way his team interacted and behaved, both as individuals, with co-workers, and as an organization with their customers. He developed a “Cultural Pledge” that included three components: the organization’s seven values, the organization’s vision statement (“A team united in purpose to care for one another, our customers, and community”), and the organization’s mission statement (“Exceptional customer service delivered by a talented, passionate, and caring team”). Every employee was required to read the pledge and acknowledge understanding of it by signing and dating it, hence Chuck knew each team member agreed and was onboard with the Tax Collector Office’s new Culture Deck. Here are the Bay County Tax Collector’s seven core values, which any business can (and should) adopt because these are universal principles that equate to simply doing good business: 1. Build community. “When you know more about the people you work with,” says Chuck, “you have the advantage to be able to uniquely serve them and demonstrate real care.” 2. Hire, retain and celebrate talent. Talent doesn’t necessarily point to an individual’s formal education or experience; it is often demonstrated in one’s ability to embrace new ideas, agility in adjusting to change, and willingness to work in a team. 3. Extend respect and grace to all. “We extend respect and grace because we expect respect and grace,” says Chuck. Respect doesn’t just mean how you treat an individual, but how you speak about an individual. 4. Embrace challenge and seek growth. Seeking opportunities to grow ourselves is critical to our ability to adapt to change and find solutions to challenges.

CAPTION: Bay County Tax Collector and Guest Speaker Chuck Perdue

5. Holding oneself and each other accountable. “We pledge to hold one another responsible, in love, for words spoken and actions taken,” says Chuck. This will result in building a team founded on trust and integrity. 6. Deliver service with excellence. “We believe in exceeding expectations,” says Chuck. “It means going the extra mile, being creative in our service delivery, and recognizing that each customer has a story.” 7. Seek opportunities to serve others. “Serving others is a privilege,” says Chuck, adding the team should actively keep their eyes and ears open to the needs around them to make a positive impact on the life of another – without seeking anything in return.

What Is IdeaCamp? IdeaCamp is a forum to inspire, energize, and ignite the community through sharing, connecting, and cultivating of open-minded discussions supporting the free flow of ideas. IdeaCamp creates an experience to learn, engage, and expand your life and your business.

COMMITTEE UPDATES | AMBASSADORS

AMBASSADORS REPRESENT YOUR CHAMBER BY JEREMY HINTON

T

he Ambassadors are a diverse group of Panama City Beach Chamber members. We have sales professionals, health and

beauty specialists, insurance agents, marketing agents, CPA’s, realtors, investment advisors, real estate management agents, entertainment agents, and representatives from dozens of other industries. Our group, and the PCB Chamber, is not only about supporting businesses, it is also about supporting our community and the well-being of the individuals within our community. We recently did ribbon cutting events for new Chamber members Legal Shield and Float Fix. While these are two very different businesses, they share a common theme: improve the well-being of those in our community. At the Float Fix grand opening I met Dr. Tyler Gregory. He and his wife recently relocated to PCB to open their new business Beachtown Chiropractic Co., another new business devoted to improving our community. I cannot discuss the idea of personal well-being without mentioning Ramon and Marsha Duvall. This couple has been an important part of the Ambassadors for many, many years and is dedicated to improving our community, one person at a time, through their work at Beachside Fellowship. You didn’t know churches were members of the PCB Chamber? Check out “Religious Organizations” in the online membership directory for a listing. The Ambassador spotlight is another great example of community dedication by our friend Pamela Wallace. Make sure to read about what she is doing. The Ambassador group meets new people every week, those new to our community and those who are pillars of our community. Would you like to do this too? Come join our group and help support the well-being of our community and the individuals who belong to it. For more information, visit pcbeach.org/ambassadors-committee or call the Chamber at (850) 235-1159.

CAREERSOURCE GULF COAST

KIM BODINE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The job-search process can be one of the most exhausting and stressful experiences ever. With multiple platforms and lengthy applications, it is not uncommon for job seekers to feel overwhelmed. CareerSource Gulf Coast has a tool to ease that burden for job seekers: the Employ Florida mobile app. Searching for a job has never been easier.

The menu option provides tabs for job seekers to organize their searches and retrieve search-data at a later time. Particularly, job seekers can save their favorite jobs and view their previous searches and recently viewed jobs. There are map pins shown on the interactive map—each pin has a color and symbol that indicates the industry. The menu provides a legend for further understanding of each pin. Under the “User Manual” tab there is a description of each step of the sign-in and jobsearch functions. There are also resources both on the app and through the Employ Florida website that will provide step-bystep instructions on how to use the app.

Employ Florida is one of the nation’s largest state web based job banks. We work with Employ Florida to match qualified candidates to the in-demand careers that users will find on employflorida.com. The Employ Florida app provides the same features and functionality that one experiences on the website and puts it in the palm of your hand. Now you can search for a career anywhere, anytime. There is no cost for the app, and it is available for both iPhone and Android users via download through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Based on user’s locations, the nearest CareerSource Job Center can be selected for user reference. Choosing the nearest location will pull up local job openings within that region, and provide information specific to that location such as contact information, hours of operation and distance from the user’s location.

While the app does not require users to be registered with Employ Florida, we highly recommend users fully register in order to maximize all the resources and features available including the ability to access saved data on both the app and website. Users can browse through hundreds of thousands of open positions at the touch of their fingertips. Job openings can be categorized by type, the date they were posted and geographic location and viewed on an interactive map. Additionally, searches can be narrowed down by industry and keywords.

We hope the book will prompt conversations in the workplace, among friends and on a more public level about the fine line between fact and fiction, the consequences of a snap decision and journalism as a higher calling. After reading the book, we invite you to join students, faculty and staff as the New York Times bestselling author speaks during a community event Monday, Sept. 24, on campus. GULF COAST STATE COLLEGE

DR. JOHN HOLDNAK PRESIDENT

Leading a healthy and active lifestyle is essential for maintaining a high quality of life, but it can be difficult to carve out the time for exercise for both the brain and body. It’s known that physical activity can increase energy levels, reduce stress and improve cardiovascular health among many other benefits, and according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, only one in three adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week. As a way to provide physical fitness opportunities for everyone in the community, Gulf Coast State College offers a full spectrum of wellness and aquatic fitness courses that are affordable and accessible for all abilities and fitness levels. The wellness courses take place in the state-of-the-art fitness center/weight room or dance studio and include Yoga, Circuit Training, Low Impact Kickboxing and Zumba. The aquatic courses include Fitness Swim, Water Aerobics and Adult Warm Water Exercise, which are held in GCSC’s heated pool and hydrotherapy pool, allowing classes to be held year-round. You can also take advantage of living near the beautiful Gulf of Mexico with

our scuba certification courses, lifeguard training and swimming lessons for children and adults. As an extra benefit, all registered students receive access to the weight room/fitness center, pool and hydrotherapy pool – providing more bang for the buck! To keep intellect engaged and stimulated, GCSC’s Corporate College also offers Education Encore, a unique program of lifelong learning for active adults and seniors. It’s a series of non-credit enrichment classes covering a variety of topics in a stress-free learning environment, providing opportunities for participants to maintain active lifestyles, socialize and, most importantly, have fun! Students discover new skills and hobbies like watercolor painting, jewelry making or writing. They also learn about history and culture (locally and globally), work on their physical fitness with yoga or aerobics, and that is just scratching the surface! All classes are taught by local experts in their field who are dedicated to making sessions exciting and engaging for all. GCSC is committed to improving the lives of everyone in the community, and providing these programs are another way we can give back to the citizens that we serve. I’d like to encourage anyone interested in Education Encore to join us for the Fall session that begins September 21, or join us for a fitness class or two!

CITY OF PANAMA CITY BEACH

MIKE THOMAS MAYOR

There is never any reason to be bored in Panama City Beach.

Gayle’s Trails and the Conservation Park see heavy usage, especially during the cooler months, and at cooler times of the day.

We live in a place that is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and fitness buffs where almost every kind of sport or recreational activity imaginable can be enjoyed. And because of our great weather, you can participate in these activities year-round.

The Conservation Park is a 2,900-acre outdoor recreational haven with 24 miles of trails and more than a mile of boardwalks that enable visitors to explore wetlands and wildlife on foot or bike. This park attracts almost 40,000 visitors each year.

Just look at our front yard -- the Gulf of Mexico, where on any given day you will find people swimming, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, boating, fishing, and snorkeling. Who could ask for a nicer front yard to play in? Panama City Beach is also just minutes away from the bay, several lakes, and numerous creeks where these same activities can be enjoyed. For those who want to swim year-round, Frank Brown Park is home to a heated and cooled 50-meter Olympic sized pool that is open from January through December. Water aerobics are also held at the pool and the park also has a children’s activity pool open during the summer and a youth fishing pond. With the addition of bike friendly pathways and trails, we are also seeing more bicyclists, runners, and walkers in our community.

In cooperation with the Tourist Development Council, and working with several groups, we host many successful athletic events each year including baseball tournaments, softball tournaments, triathlons and swim meets. These events bring tens of thousands of people to our city. Our Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of youth sports including baseball, soccer, basketball, t-ball, tennis, and karate. The city also has numerous adult activities, from softball and tennis to karate and line dancing at Frank Brown Park and Lyndell Center.

There are four tennis courts at Frank Brown Park for public use and numerous private courts around. There are also several public golf courses in the city for those who want to hit the links. For those who enjoy working out, the city is home to numerous gyms. Whatever you want to do for exercise, fitness, and relaxation, you can do it in Panama City Beach.

BAY COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Panama City Beach saw one of the busiest summers we’ve had to date, breaking several bed-tax collection records and spelling a boom for beach businesses. And while the huge influx of tourists is great for the economy, it caused a headache for a lot of drivers, particularly on Back Beach Road. Bay County, the City of Panama City Beach, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) are working toward improvements that will alleviate some of the traffic woes, but no quick fix is possible. The state is working toward expanding U.S. 98 to six lanes and the county and the city have partnered to complete the next segment of Bay Parkway. Movement on the Back Beach Road expansion could come as soon as 2020, thanks to a recent designation by FDOT that could prioritize

PHILIP "GRIFF" GRIFFITTS DISTRICT 5

state funding. Currently, Back Beach Road exceeds its 40,000 cars per day capacity by more than twice on the busiest days. Bay Parkway would connect its existing 1.4 miles from North Pier Park Drive to Nautilus Street. Both the city and the county have pledged $3.5 million to the overall $8.5 million project. The county has applied for up to $4 million to make up the difference. Construction on that project could begin as soon as April 2019. While traffic increases are the norm, Bay County property owners won’t see an increase in the county’s millage rate this year. The board agreed to keep the maximum millage rate at 4.43, which is the same rate taxpayers paid in 2018. The final budget hearing is set for Sept. 18 at 5:01 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Bay County Government Center. The public is invited to attend. Alternatively, it can be streamed live on Facebook or at baycountyfl.gov.
