f one were to chart the sales of turkey in a year, one would inadvertently notice a bump whenever Christmas comes around. In Singapore, the presence of a large turkey has almost become synonymous with the occasion. However, the practice of eating turkey at Christmas was actually predominantly an English tradition that became popular in other places. There are many cultures that do not and continue to celebrate Christmas with well-loved festive foods other than turkey. For example, Italians do not eat meat just before Christmas and celebrate with mainly fish, pasta and ham over the next two days instead. Here’s a look at some other beloved gastronomical stars that grace tables around the world during Christmas season.

Ensalada de Noche Buena

Also known the Christmas Eve Salad, Ensalada de Noche Buena is a colorful salad that is sometimes part of elaborate Christmas Eve dinners observed in some parts of Mexico. Typical ingredients may include lettuce, beets, oranges, bananas, pineapples, limes, jicamas, peanuts and pomegranate seeds which are usually artfully displayed together. The result is a brilliant splash of colorful healthy food among the array of richer Christmas dishes.

Pinnekjøtt

Pinnekjøtt, which literally translates to stick meat, is a lamb dish from Norway. Racks of lamb or mutton are cured in brine or sea salt and dried. Before cooking, they are rehydrated and steamed, traditionally over birch twigs, which is the reason behind its name. The dish is then served with puréed rutabaga, potatoes and beer or traditional alcohol.

Stracciatella

This Italian favorite is an egg-drop soup that is prepared by beating eggs, grated parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, nutmeg and semolina into a mixture which is then added into broth. The broth, which may contain meat, is swirled with a whisk after which the egg mixture is dropped in a slow stream to produce the small shreds of cooked egg, known as stracciatelle, in the broth.

Panettone

Panettone is a sweet fluffy bread loaf that originated from Italy and has a cupola shape which can go up to about 12 to 15 cm in height. It is made over a long process that can take up to a few and may contain fruits such as candied orange, raisins and lemon zest. It is typically enjoyed at the end of a fulfilling Christmas dinner and may sometimes be served with sweet beverages or wine.

Poppy Seed Roll

While poppy seeds haven’t always enjoyed the best of reputations, Poppy Seed Roll is a popular pastry in various parts of Europe, particularly as a festive bread. Known as Beigli in Hungary and Makowiec in Poland, it consists of sweet bread that resembles a cake roll with a rich bittersweet filling of poppy seed and sometimes raisins, nuts and rum and other flavorings such as vanilla and cinnamon.

How did turkey become associated with Christmas? There are several legends behind this. One of them involves a young trader named William Strickland who imported wild turkeys into England around 1526. Before that, other meats such as geese were consumed instead. The turkeys enjoyed great success, especially within the upper class society, and eventually became a widely accepted Christmas bird. There are some who believe the idea of turkey-eating presented in Charles Dickens’ famous “A Christmas Carol” was the reason why Christmas turkey sales really took off in the 20th century.

e were a little surprised at how fleshy and tender the meat was for this good old American favourite at AnMour. Prepared using the café’s own special barbecue sauce, we were told the ribs are braised for nearly an hour before it is roasted to give it a slightly crispy edge. The dish comes with creamy mashed potato which is also made in house and is extremely popular among patrons. Rib-licking good!

Unable to contain her passion for fashion, she also moonlighted as the fashion editor for City Magazine which saw her spending her holidays on self-sponsored trips to fashion shows in Paris and Milan, and evenings sifting through thousands of slides in search of new fashion trends. Love brought Christina to Hanoi in 1995, but the move soon became an invaluable opportunity. Impressed by the workmanship of local artisans, Christina began developing private label work for international designers such as Shanghai Tang, G.O.D. and Anteprima.
