It is the third week of July and we just got back from the World Charolais Congress in the United Kingdom. In-depth coverage of this biennial event is further back in this issue. Canada is hosting this event in 2024 and the breeders from around the world expressing interest in attending was excellent. It will be a great event covering four provinces, with opportunities for all breeders to participate. June saw some national and provincial association events, starting with the CCA AGM in Russell, Manitoba. It was a very fun event with a tremendous inaugural Friends of Canadian Charolais Foundation Sale. Unfortunately, the attendance was not where it should have been considering the program and the importance of helping direct your association with your participation. The Saskatchewan Association changed their AGM, which included golfing and an internet sale at Dakota Dunes, south of Saskatoon. It was a great event with breeders networking

from across the prairies and having fun together. The Alberta Summer Tour saw good participation as well, for this day long southern swing. Several good herds were visited, and great hospitality was provided at all the farms, as well as on the buses. All these events are affordable and a place to meet breeders you don’t know, share ideas, and hopefully find new customers along the way. What a difference a year makes, with the drought ending in most places. Unfortunately, some areas have had too much moisture and some storm damage this spring and summer. Hay and pastures are improved and the cost of winter feed, outside of grain, will be down to more manageable prices, if purchasing is needed. Beef numbers around the world are down and prices are up in several countries, and we should see an improved calf market this fall as well. With the cost of everything increasing, the price of cattle does need to improve to keep this industry profitable. The Dutch farmers that have been holding a country wide protest to the government’s plan to lower the use of fertilizer will

hopefully deter other countries from implementing similar policies. The unrest around the world will increase, as there will be food shortages if farmers are restricted in how they can be more efficient and produce more food. A tip of the hat to all the cattlemen organizations from across Canada for lobbying the government and Health Canada to not put a misleading warning label on Canadian ground beef. Because of this they reversed their decision to put a warning label on ground beef, an important, nutritious staple in households across the country. The marketing tip this month is to pull hair when you wean and process your bull calves this fall. It will enable you to send it into the labs in plenty of time. Last year with them running behind, many didn’t receive the results of their 100K for enhanced EPDs, including Homo polled tests, before cataloguing for their bull sales. It is also a good practise to pull hair on the cows you are culling and store it, in case you need it in the future. Until next time, Helge

Nous sommes la troisième semaine de juillet et nous revenons tout juste du Congrès mondial Charolais qui a eu lieu au Royaume-Uni. La couverture détaillée de cet événement biennal est présentée plus loin dans ce numéro. Le Canada accueille cet événement en 2024 et plusieurs éleveurs du monde entier ont exprimé leur intérêt à y assister étaient ravis. Ce sera un grand événement couvrant quatre provinces, avec des opportunités pour tous les éleveurs d’y participer. Le mois de juin a vu des événements d’associations nationales et provinciales, à commencer par l’AGA de l’ACC à Russell, au Manitoba. Ce fut un événement très amusant avec une formidable vente inaugurale des Amis de la Fondation Canadienne Charolais. Malheureusement, la participation n’était pas là où elle aurait dû être compte tenu le programme et de l’importance pour aider à diriger votre association avec votre participation. L’Association de la Saskatchewan a modifié son AGA, qui comprenait une partie de golf et une vente en ligne à Dakota Dunes, au sud de Saskatoon. Ce fut un événement formidable avec des éleveurs et des liens de réseautage de partout dans les prairies qui se sont bien amusés ensemble. La tournée d’été de l’Alberta

a également connu une bonne participation, pour cette journée de trimballage sudiste. Plusieurs bons troupeaux ont été visités et une grande hospitalité a été offerte dans toutes les fermes, ainsi que dans les autobus. Tous ces événements sont abordables et sont un lieu pour rencontrer des éleveurs que vous ne connaissez pas, partager des idées et, espérons-le, trouver de nouveaux clients en cours de route. Quelle différence une année fait avec la fin de la sécheresse dans la plupart des endroits. Malheureusement, certaines régions ont eu trop d’humidité et des dommages causés par les tempêtes du printemps et de cet été. Le foin et les pâturages sont améliorés et le coût des fourrages d’hiver, en dehors des céréales, sera réduit à des prix plus abordables, si des achats sont nécessaires. Le nombre de boeufs sur le marché dans le monde est en baisse et les prix sont en hausse dans plusieurs pays. Nous devrions également voir une amélioration du marché du veau cet automne. Avec l’augmentation du coût de tout, le prix du bétail doit aussi s’améliorer pour que cette industrie reste rentable. You can always tell the success of an event by the length of the celebration and from what I was told, it was a lengthy celebration. The CCA AGM was held on the June 11th, at 10:00 a.m. in Russell. The attendance at the meeting was below average, but with the spring many parts of the country had experienced, this was understandable. The CCA reported the Finances in a positive situation, with the investments remaining strong in 2021 as well as covid cancelling most of the travel. The CCA continues to invest in breed improvement, moving this

breed forward and positioning its breeders for success remains number one priority. There were several By-Law changes, many of them just in the housekeeping nature, passed unanimously. The CCA would like to congratulate Kasey Phillips, Waskatenau, AB, for being re-elected as President, and welcome new board members Josh Taylor, Dunsford, ON, and Armond Roy, St-Bernard Lacolle, QC. The CCA would also like to thank Roger Maloney, Indian River, ON, and Mathieu Palerme, Gatineau, QC for their years of service on the board. The Annual Report is available for review on the CCA website and as always, the CCA Board of Directors and CCA staff are available to answer any questions you may have.

AOÛT 2022 L’Assemblée Générale Annuelle (AGA) 2022 de l’Association Charolais du Canada s’est tenue les 10 et 11 juin dernier à Russell, au Manitoba. Les activités ont débuté la matinée du 10 juin avec des visites de troupeaux. Nous avons traversé le Parc Assessippi, l’un des plus beaux parcs au Manitoba. Notre premier arrêt fût dans les pâturages de la ferme Hunter Charolais. La famille Hunter nous a présenté un magnifique groupe de couples vacheveau, puis nous nous sommes déplacés dans leur pâturage des génisses de remplacement. Notre second arrêt fût à la ferme High Bluff Stock Farms, là où la famille Jackson nous a montré leur programme avec la visite de deux pâturages. Après un lunch au Club de golf Prairie Lake Lodge, une partie du groupe a poursuivi en jouant au golf, tandis que les autres visitaient le site historique des élévateurs à grain nationaux d’Inglis. En soirée, le premier encan annuel de la “Fondation des amis des Charolais Canadiens » s’est tenu dans la grange des Jackson, à Inglis, Manitoba. Plusieurs lots de génétique ainsi que d’autres prix offerts par l’industrie étaient offerts

dans cet encan de la Fondation. Le lot 1 de l’encan était un choix parmi les taures gestantes des Fermes Steppler. On a procédé à la vente de cette taure par enchère hollandaise, amassant un total de 25 380 $ en valeur. Les gagnants de cette enchère furent Daines Cattle et O’Neil Livestock, lesquels ont ensuite redonné généreusement leur achat à la Fondation qui l’a remis en vente. La ferme Prairie Cove Charolais a ensuite acheté le choix de cette taure gestante au prix de 17 500 $. Les autres lots offerts furent par la suite vendus soit par enchère sur place ou bien par le système « Farmgate ». Lorsque la poussière fut redescendue, on avait accumulé un total de 117 390 $. Nous remercions énormément tous les éleveurs et les fournisseurs de services pour leurs généreux dons, de même que tous les acheteurs ayant supporté cet encan. Nos remerciements vont également envers les membres du comité organisateur, qui ont consacré temps et efforts pour organiser cet évènement. On peut toujours évaluer le succès d’une activité par la durée des célébrations et, selon ce qu’on m’a dit, les célébrations furent assez longues.

L’AGA de l’ACC s’est tenue le lendemain, 11 juin à 10:00, à Russell. Le nombre de participants à cette assemblée était inférieur à la moyenne mais, compte tenu des conditions printanières difficiles dans plusieurs régions du pays, cela était normal dans les circonstances. On a présenté un rapport des finances de l’ACC plutôt positif, grâce à des investissements judicieux en 2021 et à des frais de déplacement diminués en raison du contexte de la Covid. La priorité de l’ACC demeure d’investir au niveau de l’amélioration génétique, afin que la race poursuive sa progression et que les éleveurs connaissent du succès. Plusieurs amendements à nos statuts ont été approuvés à l’unanimité, la plupart concernant des aspects administratifs. L’ACC désire féliciter Kasey Philips de Waskatenau, en Alberta, pour sa ré-élection au poste de Président, et nous souhaitons la bienvenue aux deux nouveaux membres du conseil d’administration, soit Josh Taylor de Dunsford en Ontario et Armand Roy de Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle au Québec. L’ACC offre de plus ses sincères remerciements à Roger Maloney d’Indian River en Ontario et à Mathieu Palerme, de Gatineau au Québec, pour leurs nombreuses années de service au sein du conseil d’administration. After a couple of years of not having a tour, this year’s Alberta Charolais Summer Tour took us to the southern part of the province. Around 100 people took part throughout the day. The first stop was Brayshar Charolais, Nanton. Brayshar and Snake Valley Farms had cattle on display and provided a great atmosphere and delicious breakfast for everyone. From there, we hopped over to

Triple M Farms, Claresholm, where we enjoyed coffee and doughnuts and a great display of cattle. The third stop took us to White Lake Colony, Nobleford. McLeod Livestock also had bulls on display. Here we were treated to a great lunch followed by a tour of the new feedlot and some more top-notch females. We jumped on the bus for the drive south to Nish Charolais, Aetna. The Nish family had their cattle on display

in their beautiful calving facility. The fourth stop was just up the road at Cardston where the Quintons, of Char-Maine Ranching, had a pen of heifers and a pen of cow/calf pairs on display. The day was topped off with a steak supper at the Cardston Legion. All the hosts treated everyone to quality cattle and excellent hospitality. Thanks to everyone involved for a great day.

GREAT INAUGURAL SALE

Inaugural Friends of Canadian Charolais Sale June 10, 2022 • Inglis, MB Auctioneer: Chris Poley Blockman: Andre Steppler Online & Timed Auction: DLMS 39 Lots Grossed $117,390 Four years from conception to reality was all worth it. To get the registered charity status, there were many hoops to go through, with much back and forth between the Canada Revenue Agency and other professionals to finally have it completed. Covid did slow the process down, but Craig Scott worked diligently to get it approved. Along with Craig, the initial board putting this together consisted of Tim Bullick, Andre Steppler, Kasey Phillips and Helge By. Everyone pitched in to gather a great selection of frozen genetics, service vouchers and products, from very generous sponsors. The sale was held in the loft of Garth and Darlene Jackson’s barn near Inglis, which has seen many barn dances and wedding dances over the years. The late spring, with

many people still seeding meant there was a lower attendance than anticipated, but those who came were treated to a great weekend hosted by Erin Jackson, of High Bluff Stock Farm, Inglis, and Michael Hunter, of Hunter Charolais, Roblin. Right from the herd tours Friday morning, to golf, or Inglis Elevator tour, to the CCA AGM, to boating and the Escape artist entertainment Saturday night, it was a very fun event. The feature lot in the sale was the pick of the Steppler Farms bred heifers, of Miami, with tickets $10 each. Combined advance ticket sales and auctioned tickets totalled 2,538 tickets sold. At the end of the live auction portion, a draw was made and the winner was O’Neill Livestock, Innisfail, AB, who graciously donated this back to be resold. At $17,500, Prairie Cove Charolais, Bashaw, AB, purchased this opportunity making this lot total $42,630. The second high selling lot in the sale was four packs of 5 doses each of Elder’s Houlio 4H semen for the 2023 breeding season from Elder Charolais, Coronach, SK. This totaled

The high selling semen per dose were the 2 doses of heifer sexed SCX Jehu 233E semen donated by McLeod Livestock, Rockyview County, AB, that sold for $2,500 each to Springside Farms, Airdrie, AB, and Alton Century Farms, Lucknow, ON. The high selling embryos were the pick of 3 embryos from Miss Prairie Cove 309A, from Prairie Cove Charolais. They were purchased at $1,000 each by Clearwater River, AB. The high selling lot in the timed auction, which started closing right after the live auction, were the 10 doses of DC/CRJ Tank E108 P, from Hunter Charolais and Wilgenbusch Charolais, Halbrite, SK, which brought a total of $8,250 with 5 selling to Turnbull Charolais, Pincher Creek, AB, and 5 to Highway 21 Group, Acme, AB. Jorja Beck, of Beck Farms, Milestone, SK, offered a unique CCYA Mentorship Package for the 2023 Conference and Show in Brandon. It sold for $2,300 to Wilgenbusch Charolais.

After breeding Charolais for over 44 years, Father Time (and occasionally Mother Nature) says it’s time. We feel very blessed to have been part of this great breed, and even greater people, for over 4 decades. Quite a feat in itself when you consider the average is 7 years. It is also very gratifying to know the herd will be in very good hands under Mike’s management and keen eye. I approached Mike with the idea, and it came to fruition in very short order, with both of us very excited about the opportunity. Thank you Mike! NEWS The 59th Saskatchewan Charolais Association Annual General Meeting was held on June 18th, at Dakota Dunes Resort, south of Saskatoon. To encourage more people to attend, they included a golf tournament starting in the morning, and following the 4:00 pm meeting there was a supper and SK Royal Sale. A bigger enthusiastic crowd took part in some or all the activities with a successful sale and evening closing it out. Jordan Moore, Redvers, was reelected President of the Saskatchewan Charolais Associaion Board of Directors. 1st Vice-President remains Justin Cay, Kinistino, while Dale Weinbender, Canora, was newly elected 2nd Vice-President. In board elections, the three members who were up for re-election, Doug Harcourt, Quill Lake; Justin Cay

and Raymond Paschke, Love, were unchallenged and re-elected to the board for another three-year term. The 2021 Financial statement showed a net income of $7,910 with income of $47,716 and expenses of $39,806. The association is in good shape with nearly $90,000 in Retained and Current Earnings. The Ad & Promo is still the largest expenditure, with over $10,000 going to the promotion of the Charolais breed in the province through advertising in print and auction markets. A profitable Breeder Directory started in 2021 was also finished in early 2022. The $2,000 Charolais Bull Buyers Credit is back for another year. Every registered Charolais bull bought and transferred from a Saskatchewan Charolais Association member is eligible for a chance to win the credit.

4-H & Youth report told of 72 $30 Dairy Queen gift cards going out so far this year to any 4-H member with a Charolais Project. The SCA also sponsored several Junior and Jackpot shows around the province. This year, they are also awarding two $1,000 scholarships and will start taking applications this summer. The website and social media report was given and Darlene Voegeli continues to be the administrator of the Facebook page. They are running a photo contest to look for pictures for promotional advertising. Kasey Phillips, president, of the CCA gave an update on the national association and Helge By talked about the Charolais-Charbray International Association and of the World Charolais Congress coming to Canada in 2024.

World Charolais Congress – United Kingdom Helge By

The 2022 World Charolais Congress was held in the United Kingdom from July 7th to 18th covering all four countries of the UK. This was the first Congress since 2018 in Sweden, as Covid 19 cancelled the 2020 one. There were about 100 registered guests from 12 countries, plus local breeders, beef

producers and customers of the farms we visited. There was a great mix of people and a chance to visit with many not on the full tour. For many of us, we got to visit with breeders from the UK that we met on previous Congresses and some we hadn’t seen since the last Congress held in the UK in 2012.

A welcome reception and supper were held the evening of July 7th at the Hilton Heathrow Hotel a short train ride and walk from the arrival airport. It was great to get caught up with everyone registered on the Congress and get some rest for a busy 10 days ahead.

After breakfast, we boarded two buses and headed north about 60 miles to the Cayler Farm, owned by the Barker Family. In Charolais for nearly 50 years, Greta Barker has been on many Congresses, and we got to see her family farm run by David and Louise Barker. David is also on the British Charolais Society board. Running about 40 cows, 1000 acres of arable crops and a haylage enterprise, they have a very good operation with set goals on what they want in their herd. When we arrived, we were given a 52-page booklet that had every animal listed on its own page, just like a sale catalogue, with their pedigree, EBVs and pedigree of the calf, if there was one at side, along with a QR code that you could scan to go to the British society herd book. After a great pig roast lunch, we boarded the buses for a two-hour ride to the Kenilworth Castle & Elizabethan Garden. Once one of the country’s most formidable medieval fortresses, the castle was later transformed into a spectacular Elizabethan palace. From there we travelled to Telford and checked into our hotel for two nights.

Off at 8 a.m., our first stop of the day was a two-hour bus ride to Oakchurch Farm, near Staunton on Wye, ran by Jeremy Price another British Charolais board member. Besides the small pedigree Charolais and Angus herds, this operation is quite an enterprise. They operate a 100-acre fruit business, including strawberries, cherries, raspberries and a few runner beans. Jeremy’s brother also runs a retail farm shop with a butchery, fruits, dry goods, ice cream stand and much more. With around 100 immigrant seasonal workers to manage, I believe the cattle are a relaxing break from the business for Jeremy. Calving ease has been stressed in their herd with the aid of a calving ease bull called Blelak Digger, who was marketed successfully around the world over the past decade.

Pasture tour at Teme Charolais

After lunch we headed for Teme Charolais just inside the Welsh border. This is a very close family operation run by the Corbett Family. This farm is right on the border with half of the farm in Wales and half in England. A 20 head cowherd of Charolais along with 20 recipients, a small herd of Limousins and a flock of sheep, this family likes to show and have had good success doing it. In 2018, they won Supreme Overall Champion at the Royal Welsh Show. Their show string was on display getting ready for the Royal Welsh show which proved successful with them winning Interbreed Junior Female and Pairs Champion. After afternoon tea we were back on the bus for some more spectacular scenery on the way back to our hotel in Telford.

Sunday morning, we were on the bus to go to Twemlows Stud & AI Centre run by brothers Edward and Richard Matson. This is an incredible horse breeding and collection operation with some leading technologies in play. On the stud side, we watched a stallion being collected and were walked through the barns with some top end stallions. From jumping to dressage horses, to rare breeds, it is an incredibly well managed operation that ships semen around the world, both fresh and frozen. They have a very extensive stud book with ones that have semen for sale. On the breeding side, they can house and breed mares, foal them or send them to their owners when confirmed pregnant. We were given an ultrasound demonstration checking the heats and pregnancies of mares. They also do embryo transfer and cloning if you want. They can clone your cat for £35,000, your dog for £55,000 or your horse for £75,000. They are also storing cells from endangered species in hopes of protecting them from becoming extinct in the future. Nature’s SAFE is a registered charity that is leading this project. It was a very interesting stop. From there we were off to York to check in for two nights with a bit of free time to check out this beautiful city.

The Charolais-Charbray International Annual General Meeting and a couple of seminars were held the next morning and afternoon with mainly the voting delegates from each country in attendance. The rest of the group were offered a walking tour of historic York followed by free time to explore the city on their own. I have included some slides of the presentations by Romy Morrin O’Donnell of Weatherbys, who do DNA and Genomic work in many countries. Gavin Hill, of the Scottish Agricultural College, spoke of the challenges and solutions he sees for the livestock producers with a Charolais slant to what he feels the breed in the UK needs to do. He talked of beef cow numbers being down, but dairy cows up being bred to beef bulls, so beef calf numbers are up. He sees Charolais and Limousin numbers being bred to dairy cows declining because of calving, while being replaced by British Blue and Angus because of shorter gestations.

Tuesday, July 12th, saw us check out of the hotel and be on the buses by 6:30 to beat the traffic into the Great Yorkshire Show. This is a huge outdoor, four-day show with acres of retail displays, eating venues and about 80,000 people who pass through over the course of the event. Horses, dogs, many breeds of sheep and cattle were shown and displayed. With the Congress being there, it was designated the British Charolais National Show. It was interesting to see what they are looking for in the show ring, which isn’t always what you see out in the fields. 99% of the Charolais are horned and they have been selected for more frame, meat and power than we have in other parts of the world. Most also breed their heifers to calve at three, so the cows are bigger and more impressive to their customers. After a formal dinner we were on the buses to our next hotel at Woolsington. It was a very long day, but very interesting.

Our first stop the next day was at Kersknowe Charolais near Kelso, just inside the Scottish border. John Jeffrey and his family operate a 1700 acre mixed arable, livestock, grain, potatoes, rape, cattle and wintering sheep. Part of the farm is rented from the Duke of Roxburghe, as many in the area are. John’s dad, Jimmy, started the Charolais herd in the late 1960s, so this herd of 90 cows has been going for a long time. When we arrived, we were presented with a full size, 92 page, full colour catalogue with all the herd listed with pedigree, EBVs, calving history on the cows and a QR code to scan if you wanted more information.

Danny Sawrij, of Swalesmoor Farms, explains his philosophy of livestock production and making money doing it

After lunch we headed to Swalesmoor Charolais owned by Danny Sawrij. Danny is a great businessman with many businesses outside the farm, but his passion is farming. He says, “Agriculture is an addiction, and you want it in your everyday life”. They run 30 Charolais, 25 Limousin, 100 Luing cows, 420 commercial cows and 1200 3/4 bred Texel ewes over farms in three areas covering 3,500 acres. With massive barns, all the sheep are lambed inside and finished on property. They also aim to finish most of the cattle at the home farms as well and send them directly to slaughter. Danny has a very sharp pencil, and his management style is different from many. He calves the cows at 24 months and showed through the tour that you can do that, and the cows still grow, and at the end he has one extra calf to show for it. Supper in the barn included a live band and some time to dance a bit after. After a night in Peebles, we were off to Roscoe Charolais near Gorebridge. They only run a few pedigree Charolais but have 350 crossbred commercial cows. They calve about 2/3 in the fall and 1/3 in the spring. Mark and his brother, Michael Ross, have a 1,000 acres which they cover. Their commercial cows start with a Holstein x Belgian Blue and then Limousin. The result is crossed with Charolais for a terminal animal. There are some big hills that we were taken over with some long reaching views, from where you could see Edinburgh. After a hamburger lunch, we were off to Allanfauld Charolais, at Kilsyth. 42

Archie MacGregor and family, along with son John, run a big hill farm with Charolais, a few Limousin, some commercial cows and pedigree Scottish Blackfaced, Texel and Bluefaced Leicester sheep. They have had good success with their Charolais over the past 50 years, but probably more with the sheep having sold a Blackfaced ram for £130,00 (about $200,000 CAD) in the past. Great stockmen, who were one of the few who calve their heifers at 24 months to try to keep the size down a little on their wet soils. Our supper included beef, Yorkshire pudding and skirlie (a traditional Scottish dish), with some Scottish background music in their shed, before we were off to Gretna Green for the night. We got to spend most of the morning looking around Gretna Green which is a famous place for runaway brides from England. In the middle of the 18th-century, English law stated couples had to reach the age of 21 before they could marry without their parents’ consent and their marriage had to take place in a church. In Scotland, you could marry on the spot in a simple “marriage by declaration or handfasting ceremony” only requiring two witnesses. This soon led to thousands of young couples running away to marry over the border. It is owned by the Houston family, also Charolais breeders, who have turned this historic blacksmith shop into a tourist and wedding destination for visitors from around the world. Candace and I visited with Lucy Houston and there are now 16 chapels, which do 4,000 wedding per year and there are 900,000 visitors to their Gretna Green establishment. This family business has grown over the past 130 years to include a museum, gift shops and hotels.

From there, we travelled to Solwayfirth Charolais owned by Ian and Dot Goldie and family. The herd has 30 pedigree Charolais cows, which was reestablished in 2001 after they lost all their 80 pedigree Charolais and their 400 ewes in the Foot & Mouth epidemic. Besides the Charolais cows, they have 120 breeding commercial females. Their commercial mix is Charolais/Shorthorn, Limousin/Saler females. They have 280 acres with 50 acres of barley and 80 acres cut for sileage and the rest grass. The grain and straw are all used on the farm, and they try for two cuts of sileage, with an average of 8 to 10 tons/acre, so they can be self sufficient. Due to a ferry mix up, instead of taking the 7:30 pm across to Northern Ireland, we were on a 10:30 one which made for a very long day and short night, but there was plenty of time to visit or sleep on the boat. We checked into our final hotel in Belfast for the next three nights. Saturday we were off to the Castlewellan Show about an hour out of Belfast. This one day show again had many cattle, horse and sheep judging. The Charolais show was about 50 head with the judges being respected Charolais breeders from Wales including the current British Charolais Society President (ex-officio) Gareth Roberts. After the show it was back to the hotel and a longer night’s sleep.

Our final day of touring was to the Brigadoon herd of David Connolly and family near Ballynahinsh. This family likes showing and had the Junior Champion Bull in the Castlewellan show the day before. It is a beautiful farm with great views from the hills above the yard. The herd started in 1979 they run 30 cows and have had success not only in the show ring but have sold bulls across the UK. Back to the hotel to get cleaned up and ready for the Gala dinner which was held in the Titanic Museum, which we toured before supper. After supper there were presentations of the upcoming Technical Conference in Czech Republic and Charolais Congress in Canada along with country presentations to the host organizers and thankyous for all their work. A very upbeat band had many dancing the night away and then saying goodbyes, as all were departing in the morning for home.

Charolais Charbray International AGM

The Charolais Charbray International Annual General Meeting was held in conjunction with the Charolais World Congress in the United Kingdom in July. Eleven countries were represented. President, Chris Curry chaired the meeting. The Financial Report showed a small profit of 517.98€. The cash reserve contains 82,904.84€. Membership has grown in the past year and the organization welcomed Lithuania. There are currently 19 active members from 17 countries. The website has been updated to include a history section which includes coverage of past world events. Countries were encouraged to keep their national events and national champion photos updated. The Genomic Subcommittee meets quarterly, but a motion was

passed to update the name to Breed Development, which reflects its activity more accurately. The subcommittee is currently working on genetic conditions being monitored by countries. Information is being gathered only as reference material which will be available to officials in each country. Colin Rex, Australia, was named chairperson of this committee again. The Virtual Show was deemed a success as it created interest from countries that were previously not members. It also received media coverage from general agricultural outlets, not just breed publications, which raised the profile for the breed. It was decided to have another Virtual Show in 2023 as there is increased participation expected. Candace By thanked Cesar Cantu, Mexico; Colin Rex, Australia; Craig Scott, Canada; Helge By, Canada, Hugo Retalleau, France and David Hobbs, United States, for their work on the committee. David Hobbs, United States, said there are 13 people from 6 countries participating in the Youth Program they are hosting this year. They have a packed agenda of agricultural

tours and tourist stops following the Charolais Focus leadership conference. Charolais Focus is a new event specifically aimed to develop the more senior members of the AICA youth for future roles in the breed. The 2023 Technical Conference will be held in the Czech Republic in the last week of April for 7 days and 6 nights. It will start with a tour of Prague and will include their national show in Brno, a wine cellar and brewery visit and of course the AGM and Technical meetings. The focus of the Technical portion will be determined at the next Breed Development quarterly meeting. There may be options for post event tours. Other upcoming events include: 2023 CCI Youth Program - Ireland, 2024 World Congress - Canada, 2025 Technical Conference - France, 2026 World Congress - Australia. Officers for the upcoming year were elected as follows: President - Kamil Malat, Czech Republic; 1st Vice-President - Helge By, Canada; 2nd Vice-President - Dominique Lolergue, France; Secretary - Candace By, Canada; Treasurer - Cecile Laine, France. The meeting was adjourned.

Canadian Cattle Association President’s Report Reg Schellenberg

It’s been an eventful couple of months to say the least. There is a great deal of positive news to share with you! On the heels of a very successful public and government affairs campaign to secure an exemption from front-ofpackage (FOP) labelling on ground beef, we launched a new brand and name in early July. We are now known as the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA). Before getting into details of CCA’s rebranding, I’d like to provide an update on the CCA’s efforts on FOP labelling for ground beef and celebrate our successes as an industry on this file. For the better part of May and June, it was all hands on deck for the CCA board members and staff when it came to engaging Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators, officials at Health Canada, and consumers on the proposed regulatory change that would have seen a warning label for saturated fat placed on ground beef. With Canadians consuming approximately half of their calories from low-nutrient, ultra-processed foods, such a regulatory change would have sent the wrong message to consumers about the nutritional benefits of whole, single-ingredient foods like ground beef. Ground beef is a nutrient-dense protein that contributes iron, zinc, and vitamin B12, and continues to be an important staple in the diets of many Canadians and their families. Making up 50 per cent of all beef sold in Canada, ground beef is a popular choice as it is affordable, nutritious, delicious, and easy to prepare.

We are very appreciative of the strong support that we received from Canadians – from both urban and rural communities – in our efforts to have ground beef exempted from needing a warning label. We established an important connection with Canadians over the nutritional value of beef with thousands of letters being sent to MPs from across the country! We couldn’t have done it without the help of our provincial member associations, who shared our collective concerns with provincial government officials as well as with local and regional media outlets. This initiative was truly a #teambeef effort and a win for the entire industry! The Don’t Label My Beef campaign showed us how quickly Canadians could mobilize in support of cattle farmers and ranchers, and the important role that public opinion plays in Government policy decisions. With confidence that Canadians have demonstrated in Canadian beef over this issue, we are very much looking forward to continuing the conversation with consumers on other important issues, such as the connection between cattle production and climate solutions. This is where our new brand comes in. We are very proud to launch our new brand as the Canadian Cattle Association, as it pays tribute to our past, while looking ahead to the future. In my first column, I shared that one of top priorities as CCA President is to leave a vibrant industry for our next generation. It’s no secret that cattle production is always evolving. As we move forward as an industry, so does our brand. We are fortunate to have a strong

and diverse group of people invested in this industry, from coast to coast. Our new brand identity was created to encompass everyone in Canada who plays a key role in raising the world’s best beef. This sentiment holds true when it comes to my own ranch. As a fifth-generation ranching operation, our success is rooted in the contributions of all family members, and in the hard work and dedication of Canadians from pasture to plate. Our new brand will open new opportunities to continue to tell our industry’s positive story when it comes to our environment, our culture, our food security, our economy, and our future as a country. Our new logo is inspired by the key elements of importance to our organization: our country, our cattle, and our environment.

Despite the change of our organization’s name - our commitment is steadfast – we will continue to be the national voice of Canada’s beef producers and represent your interests in Ottawa and on the international stage. I’m proud of our heritage and our ongoing efforts to conserve our ecosystems, while producing consumers flavourful and nutritious beef. Our goal is simple—to sustainably produce the world class beef that Canadians love. We are cattle country.

Johnston Convocates Madison Johnston, daughter of Scott and Shelley Johnston, of Johnston Charolais, Rathwell, Manitoba, has completed her Animal Science Technology: Beef Major studies with Honours, at Lakeland College, Vermilion, Alberta. Madison will be continuing her animal science studies at the University of Saskatchewan, to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Respectfully, Madison would like to thank the Canadian Charolais Association, Manitoba Charolais Association and Manitoba Beef Producers’ for supporting her education.

It’s a Boy! In collaboration between Bell M Shorthorns (Raylene McDonald) and JMB Charolais (Marshall McDonald), we would like to announce a new bloodline available … Branson Leslie Arnold McDonald. This hybrid vigor bull was born via C-section February 3, 2022… but don’t let that scare you with this low birth weight of 5 lb 3oz, 18 1/2” long. Rosso Awarded Scholarship On May 21st, Haley Rosso was awarded the Essay Scholarship Award at the Cody Sibbald Legacy Classic. This show was held on the Sibbald Family Ranch, in Beechy, Saskatchewan. The Cody Sibbald Legacy Classic was created to honour him, his memory and to make a difference in youths’ lives who have a passion for the agriculture industry. This award money will go towards Haley’s final semester in her Elementary Education Degree. Haley is a CCYA Alumni and daughter of Kevin Rosso, Rosso Charolais, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Nancy May Sparrow

November 18, 1927 – July 10, 2022

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Nancy Sparrow announce her peaceful passing on July 10, 2022, at the Palliative Care Unit, St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. A full and long life, well lived and appreciated by all who knew Nancy. Nancy is survived by her four sons and their families. Norm and Brenda (Jerilyn & Mike Gabruck, Peyton, Beau and Georgia); (Jamie & Rory Statham, Rylan); (Greg & Whitney, Brinkley). Morley and Patti (Brandon & Kristine, Stadler, Vance); (Travis & Jillian, Elle, Maeve); (Kirstin & Rob Voice, Cawley). Vern and Joan (Siera & Quinn Paterson, Theodore); (Devin & Holly); (Mitchell & Ashton). Cam and Kerrie (Emma & David), Jill and Josie. She was predeceased by her husband Alan Sparrow, in 2013. Nancy was born in 1927 and raised in the Paddockwood, Saskatchewan District. The youngest of a family of six, Nancy grew up on a working farm and attended school in Paddockwood and Prince Albert before moving to Saskatoon for an education at Normal School. It was Nancy’s dream to become a teacher

and she inspired and guided many young children to have dreams and live their lives as she did – simply and fully. A beautiful young woman inspiring so many with her kind manner. It was during her time as a young teacher that she met the love of her life, Alan, and they were married in July of 1956. Nancy was blessed with four sons in seven years. Her busy life on the farm in the Vanscoy area is where she was so very proud to call home. Even at the busiest times, Nancy always welcomed family and friends to her home for a meal or visit. Nancy along with Alan were community people. They were active leaders of the Vanscoy Multiple 4-H Club for many years, served on the UCW Board and were instrumental in promoting the Charolais breed across Canada. Many great memories were made square-dancing and socializing within the community. It was during these years that Nancy became known to all she met as the most kind and generous lady we will always remember. A loving wife and mother who taught us all the importance of appreciating hard work and following dreams. Nancy was so very proud

of her sons and their families, 4 sons, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, always appreciating visits, a good story and hugs until her passing. A very independent and family-oriented lady, Nancy always was interested to know how things were progressing on the farm or where the next plane trip was. She loved her heritage and cherished the home she made for her family in an agricultural community. Nancy always took great pride in sharing her fondness for her family and the wonderful years on the farm, with the many friends that she acquired at Oliver Place. Nancy lived there comfortably until February of this year. A beautiful bond of community and friendship for her senior years. The family is so grateful for all of Nancy’s many close friends who have recently shown support and love for her as her health deteriorated. She touched many lives in 94 years with her kindness. Always a woman of integrity and grace, a woman we will remember and cherish always. You were the glue that bound our family with Dad. A legacy left for us to cherish and be so very proud of. Rest in Peace, we will love you always.

Taking Your Seedstock Business Across the Finish Line B. Lynn Gordon

Achievements in the seedstock world are measured by outcomes. One of these outcomes is the successful selling of genetics, often through a production sale. A sale with a dollar average to be proud of, or topping the year prior, is a consistent goal for seedstock suppliers. However, achieving this goal does not come easily. It’s easy to sell the good ones; the cattle industry’s old-timers will tell you, but not easy to make them. Years and years of focus, hard work, research, and lessons learned are all ingredients to create quality genetics. Genetics may focus on carcass value or maternal qualities varying from herd to herd and breed to breed. Striving to be the best is not uncommon. Getting there can be a long and windy road. Once you get there, it’s not easy either. As the saying goes,

‘it’s harder to stay on top than to get on top.’ Three industry professionals who have worked with hundreds of seedstock producers to sell, promote and market seedstock cattle and genetics shared their insight and what contributes to the stability and sustainability of a seedstock producer. Great Genetics “The only two things seedstock producers offer to their customers is genetic improvement (or the perception of such) and service,” says Marty Ropp, CEO of Allied Genetics Resources, Illinois. Ropp and his team assist in selling nearly 10,000 bulls annually for over 80 producers 58

across five breeds and specialize in assisting with commercial customer services. Genetics and service are the two value propositions Ropp finds are crucial to the survivability of seedstock suppliers. “The definition of ‘great genetics’ is not always the same from one producer to another, but a logical presentation of genetic value to improve something is constant,” he says. Ropp, who has been involved in seedstock industry marketing for 35 years, believes a solid genetic roadmap and a business plan are also essential, especially in the professional climate of today’s customer and industry. Planning should influence decisions. “The mating decisions a seedstock producer makes this year will ultimately affect their customer’s profitability directly for the next 20 or more years.

By the time your customers have ten-year-old daughters out of bulls or females genetically made by their seedstock supplier, it will be 2035. While short-term success is more appealing, a longer view is needed. The average business life of a registered seedstock producer is still well under ten years, explains Ropp. He says, “Part of that shortlived historical tradition is a legacy of smoke and mirrors promotion Charolais Banner • August 2022

that still takes place today. Yet, the truly long-lived and successful programs in our business lean on facts and the understanding that their customers’ and their customers’ accomplishments will give them the best chance of being successful.” Superior Service Seeing and marketing more seedstock cattle than many folks ever will in their lifetime, veteran Hereford cattle marketer Art Handel, of South Dakota, knows that genetics get the bull buyer to the ranch. Still, its customer service that keeps them coming back. For over 57 years, Handel has conducted ring service at over 5,000 sales, made endless herd visits as a breed association field representative, owned his own livestock marketing company, Handel Marketing, and exhibited at the industry’s biggest livestock shows. “The customer is always right,” says Handel. He notes that a seedstock producer needs to follow through with a breeding guarantee; customer satisfaction is the top-priority. Handel has witnessed seedstock breeders load up their own herd sire in the middle of the breeding season, and drive hundreds of miles to deliver a bull when the customer’s original purchase failed. “That’s how you build a following; your customers believe in your guarantee.” As cattle marketing becomes less reliant on sale day viewing or ranch visits, and cattle are marketed and promoted via social media, customer service and trust take on even more importance. Advanced services are also changing, says Handel. “With fuel and freight expenses rampant, breeders need to step up to the plate to help their commercial customers market feeder cattle or groups of bred heifers.

“The breeders I see as successful are those who take the time to build relationships with their customers and listen to their customers’ needs.” Handel tells seedstock producers, “you can never underestimate your impact on a customer’s business. Even established seedstock producers must continue asking tough questions to stay viable.” Ropp agrees that offering advanced service to customers has grown and taken hold. “There are almost no ‘proprietary genetics’ in this business, so just about anyone can sell a son of bull X or a daughter of bull Y. As a seedstock producer, building a brand begins with the product you offer accentuated by the services you provide. But in today’s competitive marketplace, it extends further. It means understanding your customer base and aggressively working on getting the word out about your story and what you represent. Insight into customer objectives helps to shape marketing plans and reinforce the foundational message.

Testicular Degeneration in Bulls Roy Lewis DVM

One of the most frustrating conditions to hit our herd sires is testicular degeneration (testicles shrinking up). It often strikes without warning or reason. It causes headaches for both purebred breeders with bulls they have sold, for insurance companies with bulls they have insured, as well as the person using the bull. Let me be very clear, this is always an individual bull problem and one breed does not have any more or less percentage of these. In this herdsire edition, I want to explain it as best as I can and have you realize there are some positive things that come out of at least talking about it. In this article, I will go over some known causes and what to be observant for. Often we cannot prevent this condition, however, early recognition of warning signs may prevent the economic ramifications it brings. The scrotum and its muscular attachments have the ability to expand and contract and in so doing, raise and lower the testicles depending on the ambient temperature and body temperature of the bull. The scrotal temperature is normally lower than body temperature and must be maintained at that for normal sperm production. Anything that alters this greatly will affect normal sperm production and could, over the long-term, lead to testicular degeneration. It is important to note when even a temporary increase in scrotal temperature (say 1°C for 10 days) will affect sperm production for four to five months. Recovery will take a long time, which often times as a producer you do not have. Any condition which causes 60

increased temperature in the scrotal area must be guarded against. Severe clinical disease, swelling in the area as a result of trauma (stepped on or bunted in the scrotal area) and testicular torsion may all result in degeneration over time. Extremely fat bulls have too much insulation in their scrotum, raising the internal temperature. Charolais, being one of the real growth and yield breeds, have fewer issues with scrotal fat than say some of the British breeds. Frostbite will initially cause the damage freezing brings, but as healing occurs, inflammatory processes set up and these can cause local temperatures to rise. Any stressful event, hot ambient temperature, intimidation by other bulls or a combination of many of these events can lead to testicular degeneration. Most of these conditions may have been long past and may not have even been recognized before testicular degeneration is picked up at semen evaluation time. The body also has a unique mechanism when it comes to the testicles. Any situation where sperm mixes into the bloodstream causes the equivalent of organ rejection. The bull’s body produces antisperm antibodies, which fight sperm production, causing the testicles to degenerate. This could happen in any traumatic incident or with a testicular torsion. If surgery is necessary to remove a damaged testicle and precautions are not taken the remaining testicle could degenerate as a result of either inflammation or sperm getting into the bull’s blood supply. This very rarely happens but explains why fighting and bunting, especially in the testicular area, can have dire consequences. There is a huge misconception out there that treating a bull with antibiotics will hurt sperm production. It is far, far worse to leave a medical condition untreated, Charolais Banner • August 2022

running the risk of increased body temperature, than it is to quickly treat the condition. Having said that, treatment with anabolic steroids or implanting can have devastating effects on the testicles because of alterations in hormone production. If testicles are seen to be swollen, one of the best treatments is cold water therapy with NSAIDs to quickly bring down the swelling and keep it down, hoping to prevent degeneration as the final outcome. Degeneration can happen to any bull at any stage in his life. That’s why it’s important to semen evaluate close to the breeding season, in case anything has gone undetected over the winter. Testicles with degeneration will feel a lot softer and will measure much smaller than they did before. Sometimes only one testicle will degenerate, such as from a bunt to only one side of the scrotum. If the other testicle is fully functional you will even see it hypertrophy (get bigger) and it may produce more sperm to compensate for the loss of the other testicle. These bulls will have somewhat reduced capacity but still may be fertile enough to use or collect semen on. The most obvious clinical signs of degeneration are of course shriveled testicles and the scrotal hair will often grow longer. If you suspect degeneration, or if the testicles are markedly swollen or frostbitten, it is wise to have a semen evaluation performed. As mentioned before, regeneration can take place, but it is a rarer event. Plus, this may take several months and depending on the season of the year, you may not be able to afford the time. Anytime bulls are fighting excessively or you notice even slightly swollen testicles, document it, especially if the bull is insured. The insurance companies will need some form of documentation because ..continued on page 61

Barbara Irene Sparrow passed away peacefully on June 10, 2022, at the age of 94. Barbara is survived by her daughter Connie Sparrow (Brian Brannagan); son Craig Sparrow (Yvonne Mitchell); daughter Shelley Sowter (Ken Sowter) eight grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Merle (1999), son Blaine (1972), and daughter-in-law Marilyn Wood-Sparrow (2017). Barbara was born in Zealandia and grew up on a farm in Wiseton. She travelled by horse and buggy or sleigh, to Almonte School and later attended and graduated from Wiseton School. After completing studies at Normal School in Saskatoon, she began her teaching career at Minnesota School (Vanscoy District), in 1946. There she met a young farmer, Merle. They were married in 1949. Barbara and Merle’s farm began with two quarter sections

Barb Irene Sparrow and some share and purchased cattle. Together with Merle’s brother Alan, they bought their first Charolais bull in 1963. The farm grew and their Sparvan Charolais herd became well known and respected. Barbara was a key partner in preparing for and hosting annual breeding stock sales, over a period of more than 30 years. Involvement in the cattle industry included active membership in the Saskatchewan and Canadian Charolais Associations. Showing cattle at the Royal Winter Fair, the Saskatoon Fall Fair and Agribition were interesting and rewarding experiences. Barbara planted a huge garden to feed her growing family and share with friends. It was not uncommon for her to deliver a freshly picked bowl of berries, or a huge bouquet of flowers to a neighbour – just because … Barbara was integrally involved in the community. Throughout her lifetime she was an executive member and/or active participant with many organizations, including:

Minnesota Merry Makers, UCW, Vanscoy Community Recreation Board, Sunday School, Canadian Charolettes, Vanscoy Senior Citizens Club, Vanscoy United Church Board, and cemetery committees. She valued personal family histories and the history of the Vanscoy area. In this regard, she dedicated many hours to research, contributing to the publication of several books. Barbara was a superlative hostess – frequently entertaining (and feeding) large groups of friends and relatives – and making it look easy! New friendships were forged as Barbara brought together people from different walks of life. Her family and friends will especially miss and remember Barbara for the way she observed the hidden beauty of the world around her … counting the seeds sprouted when grain testing … noticing how many inches a plant grew in a day … watching prairie chickens ‘tobogganing’ down snowbanks.

HERD HEALTH, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 60 testicular degeneration is such a gray area when it comes to insurance. Primarily because we often don’t know what the initiating cause is. Spontaneous degeneration can occur at anytime in a bull’s life but is more common in older age (> 5 years). That is why it is imperative to semen test all older bulls yearly. If you have a past history of scrotal size you can pick up degeneration in the early stages and eliminate the bull. It is not uncommon for scrotal size to vary up to 2 cm depending on fat cover and season of year. An experienced veterinarian will pick up the palpable softness of the testicles along with the multitude of primary sperm defects, which accompany degenerating testicles.

The bull’s testicles are one of the most important anatomical organs when it comes to breeding ability and fertility. Always keep a close eye on this investment! Diligent observation and subsequent testing can eliminate potential disasters in your breeding program when a bull degenerates. I have seen enough degenerations over time come back, so on the real valuable herd sires, give them time, as in many months, and often we may get them fertile again. On the real special herd sires, on-farm semen collection is also very good insurance in case something does happen in subsequent years. Give them all the disease prevention shots they need and treat for internal and external parasites, they are always a great investment and offer protection. When purchasing, see what herd health program the bulls are on. They are willing to share this information and treat them as a partner in your operation. In some cases, watch for the need of foot trimming on older bulls. As far as productivity, longevity, profitability, phenotype and genotype, most experienced cattlemen, purebred or commercial, will tell you the higher quality and hence cost bulls will make them the most profits. Here’s to a great breeding season, 2023 calf crop, with no bull issues inbetween.

Harvey Trimble passed away July 15th, 2022, at the age of 85, after a brave battle against cancer over the last eight months. His wife Elaine, daughter Leslie Ann and son Rodger were with him during his last hours to make sure he was comfortable and knew how very much he was loved. The best way to describe Harvey is the name he chose for his cattle ranch, “Valiant” as he personified courage and determination in equal measure. Through his sheer force of will, he achieved the “Triple Crown” of Alberta entrepreneurship: first becoming an accomplished oilman, then a renowned cattle rancher, and finally a successful real estate developer. He achieved all these things while being a great father, loving husband, and outstanding provider. Born in Drumheller, as a fourth generation Albertan. In 1955, he ventured off to the University of Oklahoma to earn his geological engineering degree, with distinction,

Harvey Trimble while making several lifelong friendships with fellow Canadians at O.U. During his senior year, he met his first wife Jackie, a fellow student from Oklahoma. They got married that year and moved to Calgary. Jackie and Harvey made a great team, as the best parents two kids could ever hope for. In the 1960s, he became an accomplished oilman, drilling wells all over Alberta. He cut a dashingly handsome figure, whether in a hardhat near Innisfail, or stepping off a plane in a black “Mad Men” suit headed to a meeting in New York. But, in his heart of hearts, he was always a country boy. In 1972, he and Jackie established Valiant Ranches in the Sheep River Valley near Okotoks. There, he became a renowned purebred cattle rancher and worldwide ambassador for Charolais and Simmental cattle. One of his favorite endeavors was to travel to France to pick out new breeding stock to import back to Canada. He bought his first Charolais in 1966 and was a director of the Canadian Charolais Association from 1968 to 1974 and president from 1969

to 1971. After selling his cattle herds, he looked at his windswept cattle pastures, and had a vision of beautiful country acreages with dozens of homes, which he successfully developed in the 2000s. During this era, Harvey found love a second time with Elaine, his devoted wife for the last 23 years of his life. Elaine was with him every step of the way, as they brought his vision of the “Ravencrest” country residential development to life. His visions extended to his hobbies. Where most would see old wooden telephone poles, he saw spectacular totem poles, which he carved as he channeled his love of Pacific Northwest indigenous culture. One of your favorite sayings, that you applied to both investing and life, was “life is never so bad that it won’t get good again”. Dad, Harvey, we know life will get good again, but it will never, ever be the same without your twinkling blues eyes, beaming smile and hearty laugh that filled every room and warmed every soul. A celebration of Harvey’s life will be announced at a later date.

Harold Alexander Taylor November 19, 1928 – May 9, 2022

Harold Alexander Taylor of Chauvin, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2022 at the age of 93. He was a Charolais breeder and enthusiast for 40 years under the farm name Poplar Bluff Stock Farm. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Georgina Taylor, and two children who are both continuing to breed Charolais cattle in Alberta – John (Kirsten) Taylor and their children, Brad and Garrett Taylor, operating as Poplar Bluff Stock Farm, near Chauvin, Alberta; and Janice (Kevin) Wirsta and their children –

Kailey and Lexi Wirsta, operating as K-Cow Ranch near Elk Point, Alberta. Harold was actively involved in the 4-H program, being a member and then becoming a leader at the young age of 21, in 1949. He was a 4-H leader for over 40 years and in 1991, was inducted into the Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame. 4-H was always a program that was very near and dear to him as he loved to work with the members and their projects and was proud to see how 4-H built their confidence, particularly with their public speaking skills. Harold was also involved with several community organizations including the Chauvin Grazing Association, Unifarm, Natural Gas

Co-op, Chauvin Ag Society and the Battle River Tourist Association. In addition, he and Georgina were also very involved with the Alberta Country Vacation Association, where they opened up their farm to guests near and far to experience a vacation in the country and learn about rural living for over 20 years. His family has been blessed to have had his support no matter what they were doing… whether it was a public speaking competition, a 4-H show, or just building a snowman. He was always by their side every step of the way and they have all been blessed to have known such a kind and gentle soul.

Dr. W. Curt Hagele

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. W. Curt Hagele announce his passing on June 4th, 2022, at age 77. Curt was born in Springfield, Illinois, in 1945. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1969 with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. That same year, he married Sandy Danley, of Peoria, Illinois. In 1972, Curt and Sandy moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he worked at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine as a clinician in the Field Service unit. From there, Curt went on to direct the Saskatoon Embryo

Transplant Unit. It was here that he became a specialist in bovine embryo transplanting. In 1987, Curt established his own practice, Embryonics Canada Inc. His expertise in the field of embryo transplanting allowed him the opportunity to travel the world, educating abroad and promoting Canadian cattle genetics. While semi-retired from physical vet work, Curt joined the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association. From 1995 to 2010, he held the role of Registrar. In 2010, the SVMA honored Curt with the Veterinarian of the Year Award. Curt’s hobbies included painting cars, hunting, fishing, travelling, raising his small purebred cattle

herd, which was called Farkleberry Farms, and attending cattle shows with his children. He absolutely cherished the annual fishing trip with his brother Bernie and close friends. Curt was a proud father and grandpa. He particularly loved watching his grandchildren at dance recitals or playing hockey and ball. He had a brilliant mind, perhaps just used it all too soon. Left to remember Curt is his son Eric Hagele (Barb), daughter Michelle Scherman (Trevor), grandchildren Carmen & Dustin Hagele, Levi & Hayley Scherman, sister-in-law Babetta Tock, and several nieces and nephews. Curt was predeceased by his wife Sandy Hagele.

James Donald Brownell

1944 – 2022

James Donald Brownell passed away at his home near Maryfield, Saskatchewan, on Saturday, May 21st, 2022, at the age of 77 years. James was born in 1944. He was named after his Uncle Don, who was serving in WW 2 at that time. James attended Confederation and Maryfield schools. During grade seven he experienced issues with his ear and from that time on was partially deaf in one ear. He had to repeat the grade, which put him in the same class as his sister Beryl through high school. The two worked closely together with James excelling in math and science, and Beryl coaching him in literature and social studies.

When James was finishing high school, he and John purchased the Nels Scalerup farm. This began a career in farming that spanned forty years. Together, James and John sowed and harvested crops, raised dairy cattle, pigs, and beef cattle. From the mid 80s to the mid 2000s, they had a purebred herd registered as JNJ Charolais. James loved the cattle and could often be seen taking an evening walk through the pasture. When the herd would see him, even the bull would come by for a scratch. One could always count on having dessert if James checked cattle, as he would bring home berries – saskatoons, raspberries, wild strawberries – to share with his family. Horseback riding was James’s relaxation. His horse, Dually, was a special friend. It was a highlight for

him to participate in a group ride in the Cypress Hills. Church and community were important to James. He was usher at church for over 50 years and spent 24 years as councillor for the RM of Maryfield and seldom missed a meeting. His phenomenal memory for dates and events were very helpful in these roles. As his brother John’s health declined, James learned to be his caregiver. With a willing heart, he was very attentive to John’s needs and never complained. The morning of May 21st, James went for his usual morning walk and while doing so, God took him home. He was welcomed by his parents, Lawson and Harriet Brownell, his older sisters Mary Bute and Caroline Brownell. He will be sorely missed by his brother John Brownell and sisters, Beryl Henne and Edith Doell.
