Welcome to the 57th Annual Herdsire Edition and the 42nd one I have been involved with. I say this because I am as excited for the Charolais breed in Canada as I have ever been. We are in record territory with the bull sales this spring and last fall’s female sales were the second highest ever. This mixed with the enthusiasm of a large influx of new breeders is a winning combination. Combine this with the record prices we see at the commercial cattle level that look great for a few years and it should be rewarding for all involved.

We did a lot of touring this summer and got into many programs and with the CCA AGM and Alberta Charolais Association summer tour there again was enthusiasm and great networking. The Friends of the Foundation committee also held a Breeder’s School on this weekend with some great feedback. I would encourage everyone to attend the one next year. The Foundation sale was also strongly supported by both donors and buyers and with the CCYA bursaries, the planning of a mentorship program for young breeders and more things to come, this not-for-profit program is helping the Charolais breed move forward

with innovative ideas. If you have any questions or thoughts for the committee, please let them know.

The Saskatchewan Association also had a great event with golf, their AGM and sale and the Highway 21 Group put on an interesting field day that was well attended with coverage in this issue.

You will see in this issue and have probably seen online the results of the joint EPD evaluation with the American International Charolais Association. This took a lot of discussion and trial runs over the past few years to finally have it come to fruition. This should open the border to more trade both ways with the numbers working off the same base.

Candace and I also attended the World Technical Conference for Charolais-Charbray International and there is full coverage in this issue. Many countries are doing genetic tests for the Myostatins Q204X and F94L with positive results for certain traits. We were also there with Craig Scott to promote the 2024 World Charolais Congress in Canada at end of June and first week of July 2024. We hope that all breeders in Canada will want to be a part of some of this as it moves across the country. Come meet and visit with breeders from about 15 countries. The interest from around the world has been very positive, so let’s put our best foot forward to

showcase our breeders, our cattle and our country.

A couple things I would remind everyone to do is to get your show cattle registered early, especially if you need to send in hair on ET calves. You know when you pull the calves into the barn that you could possibly be showing them and should have plenty of time to get the DNA work finished. I have had some discussions as well with people who purchased some cattle going through sales that were not properly tattooed. It is a bylaw requirement of the CCA that all purebred cattle in Canada must be tattooed. So, when you are clipping or getting them ready to sell, check the tattoos and make sure they are legible to avoid any problems in the future. There will be some top end females available this fall and with the cull cow prices where they are and the feed situation in some areas, it may be a good time to cull harder and replace them with some front pasture females that will hopefully give you more return with less inputs.

I hope everyone gets enough feed gathered and harvest is good across the country. We are now off to the CCYA Conference and Show in Brandon, Manitoba, which I am sure will be another great event for all involved.

Bienvenue à la 57e édition annuelle des reproducteurs et à la 42e à laquelle j’ai participé. Je dis cela parce que je suis aussi excité pour la race charolaise au Canada que je ne l’ai jamais été. Nous sommes en territoire record avec les ventes de taureaux ce printemps et les ventes de femelles de l’automne dernier étaient les deuxièmes les plus élevées jamais enregistrées. Ceci mélangé à l’enthousiasme d’un grand afflux de nouveaux éleveurs est une combinaison gagnante. Combinez cela avec les prix records que nous constatons au niveau du bétail commercial qui ont fière allure depuis quelques années et cela devrait être gratifiant pour toutes les personnes impliquées.

Nous avons fait beaucoup de tournées cet été et nous avons participé à de nombreux évènements. Avec l’AGA de l’ACC et la tournée estivale de l’association Charolais de l’Alberta, il y a encore eu de l’enthousiasme et un excellent réseautage pour ceux présents. Le comité des Amis de la Fondation a également organisé une école des éleveurs durant ce même week-end avec de très bonnes répercussions. J’encourage tout le monde à participer à celle-ci l’année prochaine. La vente de la fondation a également été fortement soutenue par les donateurs et les acheteurs et avec les bourses AJCC (CCYA), la planification d’un programme de mentorat pour les jeunes éleveurs et bien d’autres choses à venir, ce programme à but non lucratif aide la race charolaise à aller

L’association de la Saskatchewan a également organisé un excellent événement qui comprenait du golf, l’assemblée générale annuelle et sa vente ainsi que le groupe de l’autoroute 21 qui a organisé une journée intéressante sur le terrain qui a été bien suivie. Nous couvrons certains points dans ce numéro.

Vous verrez dans ce numéro et comme vous avez probablement vu en ligne, les résultats de l’évaluation conjointe de l’EPD avec l’American International Charolais Association. Il a fallu beaucoup de discussions et d’essais au cours des dernières années pour qu’il se concrétise enfin. Cela devrait ouvrir la frontière à davantage de commerce dans les deux sens, les chiffres fonctionnant sur la même base.

Candace et moi avons également assisté à la conférence technique mondiale de Charolais-Charbray International et vous y trouverez une couverture complète dans ce numéro. De nombreux pays effectuent des tests génétiques pour les myostatines Q204X et F94L avec des résultats positifs pour certains traits. Une ou deux choses que je rappellerais à tous de faire serait d’enregistrer votre bétail d’exposition tôt, surtout si vous devez envoyer des échantillons de poils sur des veaux qui étaient des transferts d’embryons (TE). Vous savez, lorsque vous faites entrer les veaux dans l’étable, vous pourriez éventuellement leur montrer et vous devriez avoir suffisamment de temps pour terminer le travail d’ADN. J’ai également eu des discussions avec des gens qui ont acheté des têtes lors d’une vente qui n’était pas correctement tatoué. C’est une exigence du règlement de l’ACC que tous les bovins de race pure au Canada doivent être tatoués. Ainsi, lorsque vous faite la tonte ou que vous les préparez pour la vente, vérifiez les tatouages et assurezvous qu’ils sont lisibles pour éviter tout problème futur. Il y aura des femelles haut de gamme disponibles cet automne et avec les prix des vaches de réforme où elles se trouvent et la situation de l’alimentation dans certaines régions, le moment est peut-être venu de faire une sélection rigoureuse et de remplacer par des femelles de pâturage dont, espéronsle, vous donneront plus de rendement avec moins d’intrants. J’espère que tout le monde récolte suffisamment de fourrage et que la récolte est bonne dans tout le pays. Nous nous dirigeons maintenant vers la conférence et l’exposition du CCYA à Brandon, au Manitoba, qui, j’en suis sûr, sera un autre grand événement pour toutes les personnes impliquées.

Canada USA Charolais Joint Evaluation

Charolais releases joint evaluation

July 2023 marks the culmination of efforts of the American International Charolais Association and the Canadian Charolais Association to develop and deploy a genomically enhanced international genetic evaluation. The results of this work are Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and Accuracies that are directly comparable in Charolais cattle between both the USA and Canada. Percentile ranks are presented within the context of individual countries.

While correlations between EPDs from previous evaluations and the current joint evaluation are very high, breeders may notice differences in their EPDs for several reasons.

1. Additional Data

– The joint evaluation represents the merging of both US and Canadian pedigree, performance and DNA information. This additional information provides a much more accurate reflection of relative genetic

merit, particularly on those animals who are represented across both countries.

2. Base Changes

– The new evaluation is expressed on a base that is very similar to the former AICA base. Breeders, particularly in Canada, may notice significant changes in the value of the EPDs, however the percentile ranks and relative ranking of animals is quite similar to previous evaluations.

3. Model Changes

– There are several model changes that have occurred relative to the previous Canadian evaluation. The current model includes updated heritability values and correlations, updated genomic marker effects, additional traits such as scrotal circumference, and new data handling processes.

Overall, the new evaluation provides a good overview of the relative genetic merit of Charolais cattle in the North American population.

nations’ cattle populations and the new joint evaluation provides a valuable tool for Charolais breeders to continue that contribution.

The Joint Evaluation relies on accurate matching of cattle across both the USA and Canada. In the event you find an animal with EPDs that

La race Charolais publie une évaluation génétique conjointe

Le mois de juillet 2023 marque l’aboutissement des efforts conjoints de l’Association Américaine Internationale Charolais (« AICA ») et de l’Association Canadienne Charolais pour élaborer et publier une évaluation génétique internationale améliorée sur le plan génomique. Les résultats de ces travaux sont les écarts prévus chez les descendants (ÉPD) et les valeurs de précision qui sont directement comparables chez les bovins Charolais entre les États-Unis et le Canada. Toutefois, les rangs centiles sont présentés selon le contexte respectif de chaque pays.

1. Données additionnelles – L’évaluation conjointe représente la fusion des données des États-Unis

et du Canada sur les généalogies, les performances et l’information sur l’ADN. Ces informations supplémentaires nous donnent une idée beaucoup plus précise du mérite génétique relatif, particulièrement chez les animaux qui sont représentés dans les deux pays.

2. Changements de la base – La nouvelle évaluation est exprimée sur une base très semblable à l’ancienne base américaine de l’AICA. Les éleveurs, particulièrement au Canada, pourront remarquer des changements importants dans la valeur des ÉPD, mais les rangs centiles et le classement relatif des animaux sont similaires aux évaluations précédentes.

3. Changements au modèle – Plusieurs changements ont été apportés au modèle employé par rapport à l’évaluation canadienne précédente. Le modèle actuel comprend des valeurs d’héritabilité et de corrélations génétiques mises à jour, des effets des marqueurs

Les bovins Charolais apportent une contribution précieuse à la génétique des populations bovines des deux pays, et la nouvelle évaluation conjointe constitue un outil précieux pour les éleveurs Charolais afin de poursuivre cette contribution. Remarque spéciale: Cette évaluation conjointe repose sur la correspondance exacte des

bovins aux États-Unis et au Canada. Si vous trouvez un animal dont les ÉPD diffèrent d’un pays à l’autre, veuillez en informer immédiatement votre association de race respective afin que l’animal puisse faire l’objet d’une référence croisée appropriée et que son évaluation soit la plus précise possible.

The Highway 21 Group held a very successful field day on July 11th at their Hanna (AB) Ranch. The day started with a tour and discussion of their Grow Safe feeding system tubs at the ranch to test the Residual Feed Intake (RFI) of both bulls and females. After the tour there, the 200 plus producers moved into the Hanna Community Centre where speakers promoted the advantages of testing and using RFI, combined with feed conversion in your operations.

Highway 21 Beef & Barley Day

The Byergo brothers from Byergo Angus in Missouri have been testing for RFI for over 20 years and have seen the advantages to using it. They are purebred Angus breeders and have developed a bull market for producers, realizing the advantages over the years. They have seen the advantage in their cowherd too, with more cows running on the same acres and a 30% increase in pounds weaned on the same acres, as well as increased fertility. They have also seen that smaller cows aren’t necessarily the most efficient.

Troy Drake who was the founder of Herdtrax talked about the power of retained ownership in your cattle and what their Silverado Retained Ownership Inc. company owned by him and Kee Jim have to offer if you have the above average cattle that will give you better returns than average at the auction markets.

Art Petkau, a retired cattlemen and feeder and a Nuffield Scholar from southern Manitoba, spoke on how and why they got into using RFI in

both their cowherd and feedlot to their advantage.

Steve Quinton representing Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange talked about their large video sale held each fall. This year they are expecting 80,000 head and will run over 3 days. By having close contact with buyers and sellers, they have been able to provide premiums and repeat customers for the producers.

Scott Brady, of the Highway 21 Group, did a wrap up of what and why they are incorporating RFI testing into their operation. With the share of the retail beef dollar continually decreasing, we need to be more efficient. Feed is the largest expense in the cattle business accounting for 65 to 85% of all production costs across the industry. Besides increasing the efficiency of their cowherd, they want to sell bulls that can produce calves that they can buy and feed in the feedlot. With a 40 to 45% heritability, RFI and feed conversion can increase efficiencies very quickly.

Opportunities come when purebred breeders, commercial customers or foreign guests call and ask to see your herd. The presentation you make during those few hours can have a long lasting impact.

A good herd tour starts well before the day of the visit. The amount of time you have available to prep for a tour can make the difference between a great, good or so-so impression. Not every animal is going to look its best every time. If you come upon a cow that doesn’t look quite right, maybe she’s been sick or stepped in a hole and is a little lame, stick her in the next pasture until the tour is over. It is also a good idea during the summer to spray your stock for flies a day or two before a visit. If available, turn cows into fresh grass the night before. Animal contentment and a good fill will both work to your advantage. When prearranging a herd visit with your guest, try to schedule a mid-morning tour during the summer.

The cattle will show less fly and heat stress and more likely will be spread out in the pasture rather than bunched up along a fence.

Many cattle show better on one side or the other. Know which side you want to show as you are driving up to an animal. If you are in a vehicle, try to have the passenger side nearest the animal. Keep your guest between the sun and the cattle. Charolais cattle, in particular, truly shine with bright sunlight on them. Shadows can often make a Charolais animal appear harder looking.

Always pay attention to the demeanor of your guests. If they appear to have seen enough in the pasture you are in, be ready to suggest moving to the next. If they want more time, they will slow you down and ask to see more. The old saying, “don’t ride the good horse to death” certainly applies to touring your pastures. You do not need to show every group or every cow in each pasture.

If you’ve spent some time in the herd and come upon one of your best or upon a great overview of the group, end the tour there. Focus on making a strong first impression and likewise, close the tour on a good note. If possible, invite them in for coffee or a meal. It will give you time to get to know someone better and could be the beginning of a new friendship or business relationship.

After the tour is over and they have driven out of the yard, I like to rate each visit for how I thought the presentation went and how the viewer reacted. This helps me know what I can improve the next time.

A few unique memories while giving tours that still make me smile or wince!

• We had a rattlesnake get under horses that were pulling a wagon full of international guests.

• I stepped off a bus to show the herd to a large group of South Americans, only to almost step on a very large rattlesnake. After he met his demise, many of the guests wanted to pick it up and take pictures with it!

• Had trouble finding the breed’s #1 registration sire during one tour, only to find him later in a couple pastures over in the neighbor’s commercial cows.

• Taking a van load of Texans into very rough country, bouncing around for too long and never finding the cows.

• Having a young Canadian pass out from the heat during one of our tours.

On the flip side, I always enjoy visiting other operations and seeing their herds. Some of my favorite memories:

• Driving from one pasture to another, we came to a cow in the middle of the road that was prolapsed and dead from calving. The breeder’s response, “She won’t do that again!”

• Getting high-centered twice on rocks in the same Minnesota pasture. Both times we had to jack his new SUV off the rocks.

• Watching a breeder herd cows from an island, across a slough with a small boat and a 5-horse Johnson motor.

• Locating the cows by listening for the bells tied around their necks in the mountains of northern Idaho.

When at another breeder’s operation touring the herd, there is something to learn every time. It may be that you like a certain sire group of cattle or you don’t. It may be how they tie their gates or the valves on their water tanks. But there is always something to be gained. Giving a tour or taking a tour – always an opportunity!

Brent Thiel grew up on a commercial cattle and sheep operation in South Dakota. After college in 1981, he joined the American-International Charolais Association and worked as a fieldman in the western United States and Canada. In 1987, he and Nancy Gingrich, the former Charolais Journal editor and AICA communications director, married. Later that year, they joined Les & Marica Lindskov at Isabel, S.D., forming LindskovThiel Ranch. For 35 years, the partnership featured Charolais and Angus bulls, and had the distinction of being the highest averaging Charolais bull sale in the U.S. for 31 consecutive years.

The 2023 Annual General meeting of the Canadian Charolais Association was held June 9-10 in Innisfail, AB. The action packed few days kicked off with the first Friends of Canadian Charolais Foundation Breeder’s School. Participants came from across Canada to take part and to learn from some of the best speakers and educators our industry has to offer. The lead off speaker was PJ Budler, PJ spoke on several different topics including Evaluating fat steers, EPDs vs Visual appraisal, his Champion of the World program, plus he spoke on breeding bull and female evaluation. The next speaker was Amie Peck, Amie leads the Public and Stakeholder engagement team which works to increase public trust in the Canadian beef industry. The third speaker was Dr. Roy Lewis, Dr. Lewis is very passionate about the beef industry and spoke on core vaccinations and herd health tips. Dr. Lewis teaches and examines students at the University of Calgary. The final speaker was Dr. John Campbell, Dr. Campbell spoke on avoiding reproductive wrecks. The FCCF were very fortunate to assemble this great group of speakers and look forward to hosting the next Breeder’s school.

The Friends of Canadian Charolais Foundation held their second annual fund-raising auction, to say it was a success would be a gross understatement, the breeders and industry partners continue to support this event which allows the FCCF to move forward with their mandate and see this great breed and breeders continue to succeed.

A major part of this event was the Alberta Charolais Association’s summer

tour, the large number of participants is always great to see. Thank you to the ACA and to Future Farms, Daines Cattle & O’Neill Livestock, P&H Ranching, Eagle Valley Farms and HEJ Charolais for hosting the tour.

The CCA AGM was held in the afternoon of June 9th in Innisfail, AB. The attendance was up over the last few AGMs so that was very nice to see. The Board reported there had been a financial loss in 2022 but it was due to the loss of value in the investment portfolio. The breed improvement committee reported on the progress of the Joint evaluation with the American International Charolais Association, this project is very near to becoming operational and the CCA will be informing its membership when information becomes available. The Advertising and Promotion committee reported on their activities with the major focus on the Canadian Cattleman Magazine ads. The CCA was very pleased to present the Honor Scroll award to three very Deserving recipients, Hazel George, from Irricana, AB, and Hedi and Alfred Tresher,

Charolais enthusiasts from across Canada met in Moncton, NB for the Canadian Charolais Association’s Annual General Meeting, held June 6, 2019.

By Livestock organized the tour which included three herd tours, a winery, Tidal Bore Rafting,

L’assemblée générale annuelle de 2023 de l’Association Canadienne Charolais a eu lieu du 9 au 10 juin à Innisfail, en Alberta. La première école d’éleveur de la Fondation des Amis du Charolais canadien (« FCCF ») a donné le coup d’envoi aux quelques jours d’action qui ont suivis. Les participants sont venus de partout au Canada pour participer et acquérir des connaissances provenant des meilleurs conférenciers et spécialistes de notre industrie.

Le conférencier principal était PJ Budler, lequel a parlé de plusieurs sujets différents, y compris l’évaluation des bouvillons gras, les EPD versus l’évaluation visuelle, et de son programme de Champion du monde. Il a de plus parlé de l’élevage des taureaux et de l’évaluation des femelles. La conférencière suivante était Amie Peck. Amie dirige l’équipe de mobilisation du public et des intervenants qui travaille à accroître la confiance du public envers l’industrie canadienne du bœuf. Le troisième conférencier était le Dr Roy Lewis, qui est très passionné par l’industrie bovine et qui a parlé des principes de la vaccination, ainsi que des conseils sur la santé du troupeau. Le Dr Lewis enseigne et évalue des étudiants à l’Université de Calgary. Le dernier conférencier était le Dr John Campbell, qui a parlé des façons d’éviter les désastres au niveau de la reproduction.

La FCCF a été très chanceuse de pouvoir réunir ce groupe de conférenciers renommés et a hâte de vous accueillir à la prochaine école d’éleveurs. La Fondation des amis du Charolais canadien a tenu sa deuxième vente aux enchères annuelle de fonds. Ce serait un euphémisme grossier de dire que ce fut un succès, car les éleveurs et

les partenaires de l’industrie continuent d’appuyer cet événement qui permet à la FCCF d’aller de l’avant avec son mandat et de contribuer au succès continu de la race et des éleveurs.

Une grande partie de cet événement a été la tournée estivale de l’Association Charolais de l’Alberta (ACA), avec un grand nombre de participants qui est toujours agréable à voir. Merci à l’ACA et à Future Farms, Daines Cattle et O’Neill Livestock, P&H Ranching, Eagle Valley Farms et HEJ Charolais d’avoir accueilli les visiteurs.

L’AGA de l’Association Canadienne Charolais a eu lieu le 9 juin en après-midi à Innisfail, en Alberta. La participation a augmenté comparativement aux AGA des dernières, alors c’était très agréable à voir. Le Conseil a signalé qu’il y avait eu une perte financière en 2022, mais que celle-ci était attribuable à la perte de valeur de notre portefeuille de placements. Le comité d’amélioration de la race a fait rapport sur les progrès de l’évaluation conjointe avec l’Association Américaine Internationale Charolais. Ce projet est sur le point de devenir opérationnel et l’ACC informera ses

membres à mesure que l’information sera disponible.

Le Comité de la publicité et de la promotion signale que ses activités sont principalement axées sur les publicités de la revue Canadian Cattleman.

L’ACC a été très heureuse de remettre le prix du Certificat d’honneur à trois récipiendaires très méritants, Hazel George, d’Irricana, en Alberta, et Hedi et Alfred Tresher, de Brisco, en Colombie-Britannique. Félicitations à ces récipiendaires très méritants.

Tim Bullick, Prairie Cove Charolais, Alix, Alberta, died May 13, 2023, in a farm accident at the age of 64.

Tim will be sadly missed by his loving wife Wanda; son Tyler (Justine) and granddaughters Indy and Scarlet; and his daughter Tanisha. Tim also leaves to mourn his parents Bill and Bubbles; brothers Ron (Deb) and Dan; sisters Leanne (Al) and Shelley (Randy); brothers-in-law Brian (Jean), Kenny (Linda), Arnie, and Archie (Wanda); sister-in-law Sanna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Tim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to so many. He loved spending time with his family and friends creating fun adventures for everyone. Tim spent so much time at his land at Alix setting up a zip line and Timmy’s Tree Top Adventure in anticipation of all the kids coming for a weekend in the summer. Tim’s favourite times were spent watching all the kids run around and listening to the sounds of laughter.

Tim had been a tireless promoter of Charolais most of his life, having grown up in the business. He was a Charolais enthusiast who would sit down anytime to talk cattle. He was ACA president in 1989 and 1990, CCA director from 1991-1994 and 2004-2006. A founding board member of the Friends of the Canadian Charolais Foundation and had been instrumental in co-ordinating the successful first FCCF Breeders School which was held this year June 8th and 9th in Innisfail.

Charolais Charbray International World Technical Conference

The 2023 World Charolais Technical Conference was held from April 20th to 26th in the Czech Republic. Held every second year, the Technical Conference is smaller and shorter than a World Congress and is more focused on business with country presentations and technical information. The Canadian delegates to this year’s event were Craig Scott, Candace and Helge By. Candace and I arrived in Prague a day early to get our feet under us and to adjust to the right time zone for the event. With a long layover in Toronto, it was over 24 hours from the time we left Regina until we reached our destination.

With a short turn around in Frankfurt, Germany, our luggage didn’t keep up, but we were fortunate that it did arrive that evening. Planning an extra day at the beginning allows for recovery from such disruptions and time to explore Prague and stretch our legs.

The kick off to the event was a welcome dinner in our hotel and it was great to see many friends we have met at previous world events. There were 44 who attended from 13 countries, although some were just in attendance show day and didn’t participate in any of the tours or seminars.

Day 2 was an informative guided tour of Prague showing its beauty, history and culture. Some structures are nearly 1,000 years old which makes our country’s history seem so short. After lunch on a boat on the Danube river, we were on the bus and off towards the city of Brno, where the rest of the conference would be held. On the way, there was a stop at Kozel brewery, one of the largest and oldest Czech breweries. Czech has the highest consumption rate of beer per capita in the world. After a tour and a bit of sampling, we were onto Brno for dinner.

Day 3 involved the touring of two herds and a bull test station. The first was a family run operation, named Agrochyt, raising Charolais, Simmental and Limousin. Some of you met Vladimir Chytka when he was in Canada in 2018 with the first Charolais International Youth Program, where he attended CCYA in Brandon, Manitoba. He runs about 85 pedigree cows and uses an extensive AI program. He has experienced great success showing and marketing cattle to other countries besides Czech.

We also visited the REDU farm, which is a large operation involving cropping, a feedlot, a test station and 200 pedigree Charolais females. Only started a few years ago with importations from France, they have been very successful in the shows. The bull test station on part of the farm has a capacity of 200 head and does two tests per year and has a sale at the end of each. Many breeds are tested here but Charolais is the main one.

Charolais is a ticket for friendship around the world. We were greeted by Vladimir, a Charolais Charbray International Youth Program participant from 2018 at the Brandon CCYA Conference and Show.

Day 4 was a day at the Brno Exhibition Fairground with the Czech National Beef Cattle Shows. Charolais were the feature breed because of the Charolais Conference, although over the course of the five-day event, there were many breed shows. This is a large livestock exhibition which takes place every second-year alternating with an equipment show in the other years. There was a large show of horses, sheep, handling equipment and trade show exhibits as well. There were 70 head entered in the Charolais show. It was very interesting to see what they were showing and promoting and getting to meet some more of the Czech breeders. The addition of polled genetics is very prevalent as the breeders are finding it easier to sell polled bulls to the commercial producers. Many of the breeders still prefer the horned cattle, but economics are dictating the change to polled and about 1/3 in the show were polled.

Day 5 was a full day of technical presentations and meetings of Charolais Charbray International, including the Annual General Meeting. The AGM report is also in this issue.

In the Czech Republic, the Czech Beef Breeders Association oversee all aspects of the purebred industry, from the herd book, to EBVs, performance recording, promotion etc. for the 25 breeds. There are about 225,000 suckler cows in Czech with about 25,000 being registered females. The main breeds are Charolais, Angus, Beef Simmental and Limousin with Charolais being the largest with over 25% of the purebreds. There were presentations from the Czech Beef Cattle Association, the Institute of Animal Science and the Breeder’s Corporation explaining how things are done there.

Every country attending was given time to talk about their country and exchange ideas and concerns. Some notes of interest. Mexico is adding 4 EPDs to their 8 performance ones including REA, Marbling, Carcass characteristics and RFI. Of the calves registered in 2022 72.6% were by natural service, 26% by AI and 1.4% were ET.

In contrast, 70% of the calves registered in Ireland are from AI. They are also seeing concerns from the embryo calves as they are mainly raised by heavy milking Friesen cows and the bulls don’t breed as they look at sales. Charolais are used on 28% of the suckler cows there and at this point, over 90% that are registered are horned. There are 2000 members in the Irish Charolais Association and last year registered 7,000 head. Right now, Myostatin testing is very important to them and finding the double Q204X is trouble.

In Australia. there are 300 members and 15,525 active cows. Interesting trend there is that in 2000 32% registered were polled, in 2010 50% were and in 2020 77% were.

In the United Kingdom there are 1,351 members registering 5,300 head. Bulls and females in sales must be parent verified and all bulls in sales or where semen is being sold must be PA tested but are not barred if PAC. Last fall in the UK there were 100,000 more cows slaughtered and a 10% decline in the cowherd in the past year. There is also a 10% increase in heifer slaughter.

In Sweden there are 300 members and Denmark, Sweden and Finland are going together to increase numbers for performance evaluations. They import ½ of the beef consumed.

Day 6 was a visit to the Hatlák family farm in the Highlands region at an alttitude of 480 metres. They are now the 7th generation of this family on the farm. The farm was confiscated from the family during collectivization but returned after the fall of communism. Expanded, it now grows crops and is self sufficient in grass and feed for their 40 plus cow herd. They have been using polled semen for a number of years and there were some females carrying Canadian bloodlines. Jitka Hatlák is the president of the Czech Charolais Association.

A walking tour of the city of Brno was an option before preparing for the final farewell dinner at the Valec castle. The next morning saw buses leaving for Prague for some to fly home and others on to the three city/country post tour. Candace and I were taken to Hungary for six days by the Szentpétery family. We will feature some of the Hungarian cattle and farming practises in the Fall Charolais Connection magazine.

The Charolais Charbray International (CCI) Annual General Meeting was held in Brno, Czech Republic, during the Technical Conference in April. Thirteen countries were represented at the meeting with President, Kamil Malát, residing over the preceedings.

The financial report presented by the Treasurer, Cecile Laine, France, showed an income of 1,772.20€ in membership fees. The balance sheet showed a loss of 2,598.01€ which included a 4,000€ expenditure for the Charolais International Youth Program.

Memberships increased in the past year as CCI welcomed Portugal and Spain as members.

Breed Deveopment Committee

Colin Rex, Chairman of the Breed development committee presented his report. The focus of the committee for the meetings has been developing a library to be available to all member organizations with information on genetic conditions of our breeds. We now have available documentation for Myophosphorylase and Myostatin

and anticipate adding Progressive Ataxia and Leptin shortly. Education is key to managing genetic conditions and as member organizations we share a responsibility to inform our memberships of not only the genetic conditions in the population but also inheritance modes, testing facilities and practical management of the genes in their herds.

We continue to collect statistics on membership, bull sales and have included a table to record the highest prices attained in each member organization. It is available for viewing on the website, www. charolaisinternational.com. This data has long term benefits for monitoring the growth of our breeds over time, and all members are encouraged to submit information that is applicable to their organization.

I wish to extend my appreciation to all delegates that have attended the online meetings during the year. The meetings allow robust discussion on topics and whilst it is very difficult to obtain an international policy on all items the discussions are a valuable

tool for each country to develop their own frameworks. Thank you, Candace, for your administration workload with minutes and agendas. I also wish to thank the organization for the opportunity to chair this committee and encourage all delegates to place items onto the agenda.

Virtual Show Report

Presented by Candace By and Colin Rex. The sub-committee for the International Virtual show has released the rules and entry conditions and we look forward to members promoting this competition to their membership. Entry videos are loaded onto YouTube and are available to view by anyone, thereby increasing the content of Charolais and Charbray online.

The entry fees have been lowered to $75 CAD and the videos no longer need to show the animal on a halter. They must be under 1 minute, have no sound, show the animal walking, and walk around the animal once to show all angles. Entry forms and information are available on the website.

Election of Officers

Charolais Charbray International is administered by a Board of Directors composed by member Associations. Each association appoints, for each meeting, two delegates. The Board of Directors appoints an Executive Committee composed of an International President, two vicepresidents (one of whom must reside in France) a Secretary and a Treasurer. The International President will be elected each year, for a maximum of a two-year term. For continuity of the office, the nominee will be appointed one year in advance as First VicePresident.

The International President will be the chair of the next world event (Congress or Technical), the 1st VicePresident will be the chair of the following world event, the 2nd VicePresident will be from France.

The secretary and the treasurer of Charolais Charbray International will be elected at each AGM.

New Business

Ben Harman discussed the new EU legislation allowing any person to register an animal in an association without being a member, with nonpunitive rates for member services. There was discussion from the floor about the difference between an EU paper and an Association paper, and the ability to get around this with varying levels of registration. It is believed it was initiated to harmonize trade between countries and was motivated by problems in the horse industry.

The meeting was adjourned. CCI holds quarterly General and Breed Development meetings by zoom.

The impact of extreme weather continues to be the focus of many conversations among cattle producers across Canada. Dry conditions, heat, and too much rain in my home region, are making for another challenging year, coupled with rising input costs due to inflation.

The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) is monitoring the situation at the local level through engagement with our provincial member associations, who are working hard to help producers navigate these uncertain times. If and when needed, CCA will be there to help communicate and build understanding with the federal government. In the meantime, we’ll do what we do best in the Canadian beef industry and work on what we can control. This year’s continued trend of higher prices is helping to keep us optimistic in the lead up to the fall run.

The past couple of months have flown by with much work being done on key policy areas prior to Parliament wrapping up for the summer. The spring session closed on a negative note with the passing of Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management) from the House of Commons. If this Bill becomes law, it will have far reaching detrimental impacts on our sector, as well as all other tradedependent sectors in Canada. We are grateful to the Members of Parliament who stood up for rules-based trade and the continued growth of Canadian exports by voting against this Bill. The Bill has now moved to the Senate.

potential impacts of Bill C-282 during the Provincial fly-ins this spring. This Bill is not a one-off trade policy – it will be incredibly difficult to reverse the momentum and damage to our global reputation and our trade opportunities. Our advocacy work on this Bill will continue through the summer months. We have an open invitation out to Senators from across Canada to visit a beef farm or ranch for informal discussions on our key priorities, including ensuring free and open trade, the environmental benefits of raising cattle in Canada, and the policies and programs that help ensure the long-term sustainability of our industry. Our fight is not over, and I encourage producers to reach out to the Senators in their province to voice their concerns with this piece of legislation and highlight how essential international trade is for our industry now and in the future. Reach out to CCA for help with talking points or details.

From an animal health and care perspective, our spring focus was on compiling our response to the proposed changes to the Health of Animals Section XV Regulations on Animal Identification and Traceability. Our sector recognizes the value of traceability as a critical component of foreign animal disease preparedness, but it was important to voice our concerns with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). We communicated three main concerns: the high costs associated with implementation, the feasibility of implementation, and the ability of our sector to achieve compliance, as well as recommendations to enhance the final regulations and their delivery and compliance.

recently being approved in the United States. In June, CCA’s Public and Stakeholder Engagement team held a webinar featuring Dr. Tim McAllister, who discussed if progress is being made in the manufactured cellular meat space. During his talk, he underscored the challenges to the production of these products, comparing their commercial scalability to humans going to Marswith similar estimated costs. Another interesting fact that Dr. McAllister shared is that consumers looking for a more climate friendly protein option will not find it through cultivated technology. He referenced recent UC Davis research that has estimated the carbon footprint could be between 4 and 25 times more than that of conventional beef production. As beef producers, we can continue to emphasize to Canadians the pride we take in producing a high-quality, nutritious, and delicious food that also provides vast environmental benefits like carbon sequestration and wildlife habitat.

The summer months have also brought numerous opportunities for me and members of the CCA board and staff to engage with our partners and stakeholders at home and abroad. We welcome the opportunity to open our farms and ranches to MPs, so they can learn more about our sector, and the challenges (and opportunities) facing the families who raise the highest quality Canadian beef. There is also tremendous value for CCA to be present at conferences and meetings such as the Stampede Summit, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) summer business meeting, the Pacific North West Economic Region Annual Summit (PNWER), and the FederalProvincial-Territorial Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting, where domestic ..continued on page 57

With my international travel ramping up, I am taking extra precautions to help protect our industry from risks related to animal health. The arrival of August means that our industry will be gathering in Calgary for the Canadian Beef

Industry Conference. I look forward to seeing friends, new and old, and meeting our semi-finalists for the 2023-2024 Canadian Cattle Young Leaders program year, as well as the seven nominees for this year’s Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA). These two programs spotlight the good we do and the bright future of our industry.

Intranasal IBR Vaccines and their Possibilities for Export and Usage in the Field

The intranasal vaccines have come of age in the last decade or so. Some of us are old enough to remember giving the cows intranasal vaccines to prevent abortions in the early days. These products were effective but hard to give head shy cows in the older chutes. Then came the vaccines with BRSV added and lately a vaccine including two of the respiratory bacterial pathogens have been added.

One thing we must all remember is that BVD is not included in any of these vaccines and won’t be. Initial trial work indicated some safety concerns so enough said, BVD is not allowed in intranasal respiratory vaccines.

The adoption of these vaccines are foremost in young calves if having pneumonic issues say in the first two to three months of age. The respiratory disease complex is caused by a number of viruses and bacteria but IBR is one of the key initiators to the whole complex. It is also one of the key main pathogens that can cause abortions in naïve cows and we seldom see outbreaks anymore since the majority of cowherds are vaccinated with modified live vaccines before breeding containing IBR.

The other real issue with IBR is if exporting breeding stock now in the form of live animals, which is rarely done, or of embryos or semen to the EU where the cattle need to have a negative IBR status. This always seemed odd to me as for sure the countries have clinical IBR but the presence of a titer, even if from a vaccination, renders the animals embryos or semen non eligible for export.

The aforementioned restrictions are frustrating for purebred breeders

in this country and since with Charolais, I often hear of having great interest from the EU and elsewhere for imports it puts breeders in a predicament. For the possibilities of some exports they may purposely stay away from vaccinating for IBR. I believe though, that their entire herd is at a susceptibility of contracting IBR clinically. I would prefer breeders never have an IBR abortion outbreak or an IBR respiratory disease outbreak. I have even seen cows not abort but give birth to calves leading to respiratory disease they don’t recover from.

With these newer intranasal vaccines we may have the ability to prevent IBR issues to fool the animals immune system, avoid the titres and be able to export the resulting semen or embryos.

With the intranasal IBR vaccines they stimulate what immunologists call local mucosal immunity and the production of local immunoglobulins known as IgA.

The beauty is this is like another part of the immune system so titers should not show up. The end result is protection from the forms of IBR but no measurable titer.

The good news these days are they are conducting what they call DOI or duration of immunity that is a measurable length of time the vaccine should be protective against the specific diseases. The length of time for most of these vaccines is about six months so half a year’s protection. If one were to vaccinate then twice a year with the intranasal protection that would be fantastic. The other viral components in the intranasal vaccines besides IBR are PI3 and BRSV and their DOI is considerably shorter than for IBR. We are fortunate that IBR protection with two shots six months apart could provide year long protection. This is something to

consider if you are in the purebred industry and this dilemma comes up. I have talked to a few breeders already using this strategy and touch wood it seems to be working. You need protection against respiratory disease and abortions without showing titres in the blood, which is the ultimate goal.

Animals can always still get a titer from natural exposure so unless your herd is quite isolated, exposure naturally is always a possibility. One must also remember you would need a separate vaccination for BVD. Calves and yearlings are one thing to give an intranasal vaccine to but for older cows and especially bulls there are some drawbacks. Cows will move their heads a lot so it is good if you have a chute with neck extenders or the neck restrainers that are on other chutes. An intranasal vaccine is quick to give if only the head and neck can be restrained long enough. The intranasal cannulas have not changed much over the years but check the ones recommended with the product.

I was checking in the different countries and I know Ireland for one has a separate modified live IBR but what we call a marked vaccine. This is where if a titer is found one can ascertain if it was from a vaccine or from natural exposure. I do wish the regulatory bodies would get together to agree on a future where marked vaccine could possibly be brought in to use on calves similar to what they would do in Ireland. I have cattle people from countries like Scotland tell me that they vaccinate their cattle for IBR so it is unfortunate that this has in a sense become a bit of trade barrier against cattle from other countries that vaccinate for IBR.

British Columbia’s Alfred & Hedi Trescher were inducted to the Canadian Charolais Association 2023 Honour Roll

It’s not an easy life -- or an easy place to raise beef cattle and pay the bills, yet Alfred and Hedi Trescher made a success of it, against many obstacles.

Almost any place is easier to raise cattle than British Columbia’s eastern cordillera of the Rocky Mountains. High altitudes, poorer soils, cold climates, deep snowfalls, and isolating mountains are part of the challenge, to say nothing of the predators like hungry wolves and marauding bears. However, Hedi and her late husband Alfred, made a great go of it from 1962 onwards.

Born in Switzerland, and emigrating to Vancouver with her parents and siblings, Hedi made her way to Radium Hot Springs in the 1950s seeking summer employment. There she met a logger, Alfred, and in 1957, they got married. In short order three children arrived.

Alfred had some farming background from his homeland of Switzerland and they bought land just north, at Brisco. They had 40 commercial cows that came with the ranch deal and got underway. “It wasn’t easy though”, Hedi said. Some of their first weaned calves in fall sold for only $25 each. They got busy growing seed potatoes and made

choice to sell out of purebreds. “We kept a few back though so Alfred didn’t have to go into withdrawal,” she laughed. Alfred passed away in 2009 at age 80.

Their son, Peter, now keeps about 100 commercial cows on the ranch. He has 300 acres of land under irrigation to help production.

They watched their neighbor though, Winston Wolfenden, a Charolais pioneer, who promoted the fledgling breed. The Treschers decided they needed better bull power, so Alfred took an A.I. course. Soon they were using the famed Charolais bulls, Aiglon and Bingo, and their herd building began. The bought many of their early registered cows from Bauman Ranch in Wyoming. Their Brisco Charolais operation ran for 45 years.

Hedi was key to their herd promotion and their bull selling. For 25 years they ran a silent auction/private treaty sale of their bulls in the fall. Then they switched to spring. At their peak, the Treschers ran 120 purebred cows and sold 40 bulls annually.

Hedi chaired the Ad and Promotions committee of the CCA during her two terms as a board member. She also helped her local cattlemen’s group as project coordinator. She also served longtime with the B.C. Charolais Association as Secretary/treasurer -- 10 years duration.

The Treschers took bulls for testing to the Tranquille Station near Kamloops. They sold many test bulls and often had the high performing “Banner Bull” among the Charolais entries. They were instrumental in getting many breeders started and worked to keep the BC Association going for many years..

In 2004, the Treschers made the

In the later 1980s, she developed Brisco Software Systems, computer software for cattlemen record keeping, called Brisco Beef Herd Management Program. “We still use it today,” she explained. “Once or twice a year, I still get a phone call on it,” she said.

Hedi helped the local farmers develop and build a modest abbatoir operation six years ago.

In the 1990s, Hedi wrote up a Charolais history which appears in Charolais Banner archives. She updated it five years ago. She also wrote up a local history book which still sells in a Brisco store. She uses the profits from that book to support the local hospital aid group.

Hedi embraced all the tough challenges of a mountain ranch, and even had a few laughs. She saw 20 cows milling around a tree one day and noticed a bear perched way high up. It seems the cows had treed a bear. “One cow really wanted to climb that tree,” she chuckled. She left the situation alone and there was no harm done.

Now in her 80s with less mobility, her bigggest job today is to play with her 1-year old great grandson. “I enjoy it completely,” she remarked.

Perseverance, hard work, determination and innovation are a few words that describe Hedi and Alfred Trescher. They are truly deserving of receiving the CCA Honour Roll recognition.

Hazel George Receives Canadian Charolais Association Honour Roll

In all her activities, Hazel was a dynamo in motivating and helping others get things done. She could be counted upon as a helping hand at the many places where she showed cattle -near and far -- in cities like Vancouver, Regina, Edmonton, and all across Alberta. She also helped put together ACA themed floats for the Calgary Stampede parade in the mid-1970s.

With the youth, Hazel jumped at the chance to help on many occasions, supporting them with physical work and with financial contributions.

If the Canadian Charolais Association ever wanted a “Poster Girl” for their purebred cattle industry, they’d have to look no further than Hazel George, of Irricana, Alberta.

To say that Hazel has “done it all” in Charolais cattle circles would not be an overstatement. In fact, in her 50+ years in the business, one could argue that there is nothing left for her to do. So she has basically retired.

Hazel is a Saskatchewan-born gal who made her way to Calgary in 1967. However, instead of pursuing her dream of a horse ranch, she began into Charolais in 1972. She became a CCA member in 1974.

The young lady soon became wellknown and respected for her penchant to get things done. In 1978, she cochaired the CCA annual convention. Hazel followed that up with chairing the convention/Charnational sale in 1982 in Calgary. In 1980, she joined the ACA board and took on the role of secretary. In 1992, she took on full-time duties as the ACA secretary. All of this happened while running a ranch and raising her son Charly.

During the next decade, she volunteered at the Calgary Stampede Agriculture shows, served as a 4-H beef club leader, and became part of the board for the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association to run the famed Calgary Bull Sale. In year 2000, she became the

first woman president of that group during their 100th anniversary.

During her long stint as ACA secretary, Hazel let her hard work and her attention to detail be her examples to others. She pitched in for the 2000 Charnational Show and Sale during Edmonton Farmfair.

With that successful event done, Hazel retired from the ACA, but she contined to operate her Sagewood Stock Farms, but now with a few grandchildren in the mix. As the years went by, she phased out her purebreds, raised commercial cattle, and got busy managing her pasturelands, plus cutting, baling, and selling hay. She has rented out her cropland.

What isn’t “retired” are her life-long memories and experiences from the Charolais business. Plus, her many successes.

Her original ranch name, Roxy Charolais, featured some of the best production sales in the industry throughout the 1980s. Industry high sellers abounded, which helped to pay the ranching bills. Perhaps though, the herd peaked when Hazel sold a bull calf named Roxy’s Jack Dempsey to Stan Grad of Soderglen Farms at Airdrie in 1984. That bull, now renowned and famous, still leads all bulls in the Charolais Banner’s Banner of Show Sires - BOSS point totals, 40 years after the program began.

Among the women, she was a member of the Charolettes, who worked to promote the new breed in its earlier days. Hazel did the “Charolette Chatter” column in the Banner for four years.

While she enjoyed the cattle, Hazel loved the people. “I loved being ‘hands-on’ with the herd and getting the cattle ready for shows and sales,” she said. “Those bulls that I presented and sold were totally my breeding and my work.”

As for the people, “the comraderie within the breed was a super time in my life,” Hazel said. “I liked nothing better than to make things work for the breeders. It gave me great pleasure whenever my endeavors on their behalf turned out successfully.”

Her take-away from the breed has been life long friendships. “Many of the people I met and worked with along the way have remained friends through all these years,” Hazel noted.

And Hazel considers herself lucky, moreso than a lot of people. “I realized many of my childhood dreams of cattle ranching, and a place in the sun to call home. The Charolais industry was a big part of it all.”

The poster girl for Charolais has become the all-round poster lady. Hazel is a well-deserved and popular choice for the Canadian Charolais Association Honour Roll.

The 60th Saskatchewan Charolais Association Annual General Meeting was held on June 15th, at Dakota Dunes Resort, south of Saskatoon. This was the second year the meeting was held here and again included a golf tournament in the morning and a supper and sale following the meeting. A good turnout for the event made it successful all around.

Dale Weinbender, Canora, was elected president of the Saskatchewan Charolais Association Board of Directors. 1st Vice-President remains Justin Cay, Kinistino, while Scott Sunderland, Saint Front, was elected 2nd Vice-President.

In board elections, Duncan Spenst, Waldeck, was re-elected for another three-year term, while Scott Sunderland and Wacey McCaw, Whitewood, were elected replacing retiring directors Jordan Moore, Redvers and Cody Meier, Kerrobert.

The 2022 Financial statement showed a net income of $34,485 due mainly from the profit from the Player’s Club which ran at Agribition in 2021. Overall income was $164,088 and expenses were $129,603. The association is in good shape with $123,500 in Retained and Current earnings.

Saskatchewan Charolais AGM

Ad & Promo is still the largest expenditure with nearly $14,000 being invested in the promotion of the Charolais breed in the province through advertising in print and auction markets. The $2,000 Charolais Bull Buyers Credit is back for another year. Every registered Charolais bull bought and transferred from a Saskatchewan Charolais Association member is eligible for a chance to win the credit.

4-H & Youth report told of over 110 $15 Dairy Queen gift cards going to any 4-H member with a Charolais project. Along with gift cards they also awarded any 4-H member who won a regional show with a Charolais

project a pair of SCA splash pants. The SCA also sponsored eight junior shows and donated to the Canadian Charolais Youth Association. They also award two $1,000 scholarships each fall.

The website and social media report was given and Darlene Voegeli continues to be the administrator of the Facebook page and Secretary/ Treasurer Sarah Hordos is looking after the website.

Craig Scott, General Manager of the CCA, gave an update on the national association and Helge By talked about the World Congress coming to Canada next year and the events that will be in Saskatchewan.

50 breeders from across Canada were on hand for a very informative Breeders School. Starting on Thursday evening, PJ Budler, from Texas, analysed and sorted through a set of fat steers. With interaction from the crowd on which to leave in the ring and which to excuse, he ended up with what he considered the best two.

Friday morning started with Amie Peck, the program manager for the Public and Stakeholder engagement program, discussing ways to build public trust in the way beef cattle are raised in Canada. Under the Canadian Cattlemen Association, they have

successful projects like Guardians of the Grassland and tools and resources available for producers to advocate on behalf of the industry.

Following was a very interesting discussion by Dr. Roy Lewis DVM on vaccines, vaccinations and protecting your cattle from disease. He talked about everything from calfhood vaccinations to fetal protection for your cowherd along with many other herd health tips.

Dr. John Campbell DVM talked about some of the emerging conditions that cause fertility problems in today’s cow herd. He also talked about

nutritional deficiencies and several infections that cause abortions and calf deaths. On a different topic he talked about some of the common causes of lameness and how cattle producers should recognize and deal with them.

PJ Budler gave another very informative presentation before going through about 15 heifers and 15 bulls and sorting them down to his top two. There was great interaction with the participants which added to the exchange of knowledge among all who attended. Don’t pass up the opportunity if you can attend these in the future.

The 2nd annual Friends of the Canadian Charolais Foundation fundraising auction was another great success. The Foundation Board pitched in to gather a great selection of frozen genetics, service vouchers and products from very generous sponsors.

The sale was held in the Innisfail Legion with a good crowd on hand and online to participate in this fun and worthwhile event.

Since last year’s inaugural sale, the Foundation Board planned, executed and funded a very informative Breeders School and also put in place a CCYA Bursary to help youth participate in the CCYA Conferences. The Breeders School was held Thursday evening and Friday until early afternoon, when the crowd

moved to the Legion for the CCA AGM, followed by the Foundation AGM, President’s Dinner and then the sale.

The feature lot in the sale was a top end heifer calf from Prairie Cove Charolais, of Bashaw, with tickets for $10 each. 2,050 tickets were auctioned and near the end of the sale the draw was made. Cedarlea Farms, Hodgeville, SK, won the heifer and graciously donated ½ of her back to be resold. At $10,000, Steppler Farms, of Miami, MB, purchased this opportunity making this lot total $30,500.

The second high selling lot in the sale was 3 embryos out of Gerrard Evetta 26D and sired by PCC Innovation 124J. These were donated by Sugarloaf Charolais, Minburn, and purchased by Flat Valley Cattle Co., Hilda.

Lorne Lakusta

October 17, 1966 – May 26, 2023

Lorne Lakusta, of Spruce View Charolais, Andrew, Alberta, passed away May 26th after a battle with cancer at the age of 56. Lorne is survived by his loving family, his wife of 34 years, Effie; son Lyle and daughter Larissa (Matthew) MacIsaac

OBITUARY

Lyle McKay of the former McKay Charolais, Glenella, MB, passed away peacefully with family by his side on June 29, 2023, at the age of 80.

Lyle was born in Carman on December 11, 1942, the sixth of seven children to James and Hazel McKay. He was raised on the family farm at Elm Creek where he attended school, was active in 4-H and sports.

Lyle came to Glenella District in 1965 to farm and met Barbara Mossa, who he married on October 14, 1967. Lyle and Barbara continued to grow the farm and raised their four boys:

and their daughter Loclynn Lauren. He was predeceased by his parents Sylvester and Margaret Lakusta.

Lorne worked at the Elk Island National Park for 25 years, starting in 1989. He went to auction school in 2005 and started working for an auction company after that. As a family farm, they purchased their first Charolais in 1985 and were part of the North Central Alberta Bull Sale since 1987.

Lorne was a CCA director since 2017 and was on the Alberta Charolais Association Board of Directors for 9 years before that. In 2019, they were presented the ACA Breeder of the Year Award.

As the family grew, so did the farm. Lyle had a passion for raising animals and over the years pigs, chickens, horses and cattle grazed the land.

Family and friends were very important to Lyle. Being born a cattleman, his love of the Charolais breed was almost equally important to him. He may have been guilty of checking on the cows before the boys once or twice.

He was a part of the Canadian Charolais Association for 40+ years, sat on the board of the Douglas Bull Test Station and proudly raised a strong herd with impressive, sought after genetics. Lyle fed out his cull purebred bulls and heifers and was

very proud of how well they graded on the rail.

Retirement was not a word in Lyle’s vocabulary but unfortunately his health forced him to slow down and delegate more to the boys in recent years.

Lyle is predeceased by his parents James and Hazel McKay, sisters Dorothy and Frances, brother Gordon “Buddy” (Irene) , his father-in-law and mother-in-law Bill and Hettie Mossa, his brothers-in-law Ron and Bill and his sister-in-law Eleanor (Ken, Bob).

Left to mourn are his wife Barbara and their four sons: Howard (Kay), Mervin, Ian (Ruth), Darren (Jody), seven grandchildren and many extended family.

Everett had been a Charolais breeder for over 35 years and any that knew him will remember how much he was a pleasant gentleman.

Lyle McKay

Gerald Lewis, passed away suddenly on June 8, 2023, at Heritage Acres at the age of 84. Gerald was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta, the third of four sons to Ronald and Mary Lewis.

He attended a one room school at Summerview. He responded to the gospel in 1952 and remained true to his choice. In 1961, he married his dear wife, Marlene Jordan, of Rimbey.

Together they operated a mixed farm for many years in the Summerview District north of Pincher Creek.

Gerald is survived by his loving wife Marlene, his six children: Geralyn and Ken Nichols, Joan and Stephen Paddison, Murray and Laura Lewis, Sheldon and Larissa Lewis, Shauna and John Botwood and Rosanne and Stuart Shiell. He was pre-deceased by three grandchildren, but lovingly remembered by his 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Charolais herd at Char-Lew Ranch over 50 years ago and received the 50year membership award at this year’s CCA AGM. They teamed up on some high dollar bulls in the 1980s including Nashville Goldstar and LANC Visitation to name a couple. Gerald will be remembered as a gracious gentleman who was friends to all. The cattle herd is now operated by Sheldon and Larissa and grandson, Brant and Renita.

Alberta Charolais Summer Tour

This year the annual ACA tour took us to central Alberta. Around 125 people took part in the day’s events. The first stop of the day was Future Farms west of Innisfail. Here we had the pleasure of touring through the whole farm. We got to see everything from cow/calf pairs, to new herd sires and the feedlot.

After the Marshall family treated everyone to a wonderful breakfast, we headed back into town to the Innisfail Auction Market where P&H Ranching, Eagle Valley Farms, Daines Cattle & O’Neill Livestock treated everyone to a great display of cattle and lunch.

The final stop of the day was HEJ Charolais, where we got to tour another excellent display of quality cattle and topped the night off with a fabulous steak diner.

The Marshall, Kruger, Parsonage, Daines, O’Neill and Rasmussen families all provided top notch hospitality, that was appreciated by everyone in attendance.
