Visiting over the summer and fall with countless numbers of breeders, there are many needing new herdbulls this spring. I also know from touring the pastures and pens this summer and fall, there is a great selection of new genetics available to compliment any program. So, what are you budgeting for your next herdbull? I was visiting with another breeder and we were discussing how much commercial producers spend on their bulls. It looks like about the price of three bred heifers. Commercial bred heifers, let’s say, averaged roughly $2,200 a piece this fall, and the average price of a bull last spring was close to $6,000. So, if purebred bred heifers averaged about $5,500 last fall, what is your budget? I am now including an email sent earlier this fall to me from Graham and Katrina Blanche, Charnelle Charolais, in Queensland, Australia. G’Day to all you folks in Canada. Hope you are all safe and well! I have just finished a summary of the Queensland Charolais bull selling season… and thought you may be interested in it. This is Queensland only sales. It includes auction sales only and does not include paddock and private sales. The year 2020, we may want to forget for a lot of reasons. Our worst drought ever, the disappointment on the World Congress cancelled, and of course the virus, but it has been a phenomenal year for our Charolais Bull Sales with nearly 1000 bulls selling for a $9700 average. 54 of these bulls made $20,000 or more with a top price of $64,000. Our sale was the Coolabunia Classic. How we would have loved to show the World Congress this line up of bulls! A lot of the strength of the market has been the return to selecting Euro bulls to use over Bos Indicus herds in the North

and Central Qld away from using Angus in recent years. We are very dry in most of Qld at the moment, but the promise is for a good season, Regards Graham All 2020 Australian auction sales, saw 1486 bulls sell for an average price of $8674. Compared to 2019, 258 more bulls sold, averaging $2665 more, with the gross being up over $5.5 million. The Charolais market is strong there too. Some lighthearted reading as well. The first time I heard about paraprosdokians, I liked them. Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and is frequently humorous. 1. Where there’s a will, I want to be in it. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you ...but it’s still on my list. 3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong. 5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public. 6. War does not determine who is right, only who is left. 7. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. 8. In filling out an application, where it says, “In case of an emergency, notify...”, I answered “a doctor.” 9. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 10. I used to be indecisive, but now I’m not so sure. Congratulations to the breeders who participated in the Marketing School. I am sure your interest to improve your marketing practises will be rewarded in the upcoming year. To this point, the fall sales have

shown interest from new breeders across the country. Marketing with crowd restrictions has added a new dimension to everyone’s toolkit. Unfortunately, I don’t see this changing a lot for the bull sale season. If you wish to discuss options, please give one of our staff a call. The 2021 Canadian Charolais Association Annual General Meeting is being hosted by Manitoba next June and it will include the postponed 60th Anniversary celebration. If you were at the 50th celebration in Moose Jaw in 2010, you will remember how much fun it was and how great it was to see so many past breeders come to help with the celebration. If you know of any retired breeders in your area that would want to attend, be sure to encourage them to come. I know that the Manitoba breeders will put on a first-class event. Bull sale season is just around the corner and we are already working on our picturing and videoing schedules for the many ads and catalogues for the sales that will be happening. I hope your bull pen is looking good and you will feed and promote them to their fullest potential. There is more to a successful bull sale than breeding and feeding and the genuinely great ones are worked on year-round. We are poised for a great bull selling spring, but you still need to work on staying in touch with past customers and getting the best pictures for the promotion of them to maximize your returns. Après avoir visité un grand nombre d’éleveurs, je constate que plusieurs sont à la recherche d’un taureau reproducteur pour le printemps prochain. J’ai remarqué, après les nombreuses visites de champs et d’élevages depuis cet été et automne, qu’il y a une grande sélection de nouvelle génétique disponible pour complémenter votre troupeau. Ceci dit, quel est votre budget pour un taureau de reproduction? Lors d’une visite avec un autre éleveur, nous discutions du montant que les éleveurs commerciaux investissent pour un taureau pur-sang. Ce chiffre s’élève autour de la valeur de trois taures saillies. Un éleveur commercial a reçu une moyenne à l’encan de 2,200$ pour ce genre de tête cette automne et notons que la moyenne de vente pour un taureau ce printemps était près de 6000$. Mettons en perspective que la moyenne des taures pur-sang était de 5,500$ à l’automne, quel est votre budget? J’inclus une lettre que nous avons reçu de la part de Graham et Katrina Blanche de Charnelle Charolais de Queensland en Australie: ‘Bonjour à tous les gens au Canada, On espère que vous êtes en sécurité et que vous vous portez tous bien! Je viens de rédiger le sommaire des ventes de taureaux Charolais de la saison et j’ai pensé que vous seriez intéressé à voir mes données. Ce rapport est pour l’état du Queensland seulement. Les données reçues proviennent seulement des encans et n’inclues pas les ventes d’enclos ou privées. Pour l’an 2020, la plupart d’entre nous souhaiterions l’oublier pour plusieurs raisons; la plus grande sécheresse enregistrée, spécialement l’annulation du congrès mondial et

le fameux virus. Pourtant, ce fut une année phénoménale pour les ventes de taureaux de race Charolais avec presque 1000 taureaux vendus et une moyenne de 9700$ chacun. Cinquante quatre de ces taureaux se sont vendus pour une somme entre 20 000$ et 64 000$. Notre vente était le Coolabunia Classic. Comme nous aurions aimé vous présenter cette nouvelle gamme de taureaux! Le retour en force du marché est marqué par le retour à la sélection de taureaux Européens au lieu de la lignée Bos indicus trouvé ici dans le nord et l’état central du Queensland, qui, se détache de plus en plus de la race Angus depuis les dernières années. Tout est très sec en ce moment dans l’état du Queensland mais une saison prometteuse est prévue. Cordialement, Graham’. Parmi toutes les encans australiennes de 2020, on a enregistré une moyenne de vente de 8674$. Si on compare ce chiffre à la moyenne de 2019, une hausse de 258 taureaux ont été vendus avec une moyenne de 2665$ de plus et un revenu brut de 5.5 millions de dollars. Le marché pour les Charolais est fort. Une note légère. Je me rappelle de la première fois que j’ai entendu parlé d’un paraprosdokien et j’ai aimé ça. Un paraprosdokien est une figure de style ou la dernière partie de la phrase est étonnante ou inattendue de telle sorte que le lecteur doit recadrer le sens complet de la phrase. Elle est souvent humoristique. 1. Ça ne vaut pas la peine de mentir, il faut seulement utiliser les bon mots. 2. La dernière chose que je veux faire est de te faire mal…mais c’est toujours sur ma liste. 3. Vu que la lumière voyage plus vite que le son, certains auront l’ai plus brillant que d’autres, jusqu’à

ce que vous les entendiez parler. 4. Si je pense que tu as raison, nous serons deux qui aurons tord. 5. Nous ne vieillissons jamais, nous apprenons à bien se comporter en public. 6. La guerre ne détermine pas qui a raison, seulement qui y reste. 7. Voler l’idée d’un personne est du plagiat. Volez de plusieurs est une recherche. 8. Lorsque je remplissait ma candidature, dans la partie où on me demande mon contact en cas d’urgence, j’ai écrit mon médecin. 9. Les femmes ne seront jamais égales aux hommes jusqu’à temps qu’elles puissent marcher en plaine rue, chauve et avec une panse de bière en pensant qu’elles sont séduisantes. 10. J’étais toujours indécise avant, maintenant, je ne sais plus. Félicitations aux éleveurs qui ont participé à l’école de marketing. Je suis certain que votre intérêt à l’amélioration de votre commercialisation sera récompensé dans les années à venir. En ce moment, les ventes d’automne ont reçu beaucoup d’intérêt de la part de nouveaux producteurs à travers le pays. La commercialisation en temps de pandémie et les restrictions de foule ont ajoutés une autre dimension que tous ont dû ajuster. Far too often we get calls in the office with problems to register calves. nine out of ten problems are because the sire or dam do not have the DNA required. That is where breeder responsibility comes into play. All DNA requirements are up on our website and have not changed in a few years. The staff at the CCA are very knowledgeable on the regulations and requirements and are here to help. If you are importing or thinking about importing semen or embryos and are not 100% sure on what is required, please reach out to the office and we will be happy to help. Be proactive on these requirements. When you introduce a new walking bull into your program, we suggest that you do the DNA testing before you turn him out. Again, being proactive could eliminate problems down the road. We all know things happen, and it seems the good ones are always getting into trouble. Having females bred to a bull that does not have the DNA requirements complete makes registration difficult, if not impossible. These regulations are in place to not only protect our members but to keep the integrity of the Canadian herd book intact.

This was our first in person meeting in over a year. These meeting were very productive with all the directors attending in person or virtually. Please reach out to the director in your area if you have any questions. We have been working on our fall information mail out to the membership. Please watch for this in your mail and take the time to read it. It includes important deadlines and information on new and existing programs that the CCA offers. You may notice we no longer have our E-Store available on the website. With items being discontinued and the inventory amount required changing, we no longer see this as a worthwhile resource for the association. Herman and Elaine Rawe settled near Strome, Alberta, in the mid-forties. Herman had a Hereford-Shorthorn based cowherd and started using 3⁄4 and 7⁄8 Charolais bulls in 1957. The difference in growth and vigour was unbelievable. He was convinced of their merit and became a founding member of the Canadian Charolais Association. Those early days were full of challenges for those who invested in the first exotic breed in Canada. They were not accepted by everyone. John remembers his Uncle

James (Rawe) telling him about a neighbour who had 100 Hereford cows, a couple of Hereford bulls and one 3 ⁄4 Charolais x 1⁄4 Brahman bull James had sold him. The next spring, he got 90 some yellow calves. James laughed about that for years. As obvious as the advantages were, the Rawe children were still ridiculed in 4-H for their Charolais steers. They stuck with it and in 1972, when John and Myrna took over the operation, the breed was basically accepted, and the rewards were strong.

Rawes Ranches held their first bull sale at the Killam Auction Market in 1983 featuring 40 yearling bulls. This year they sold 172 coming two-year old bulls. Rawes Ranches held their first bull sale at the Killam Auction Market in 1983 featuring 40 yearling bulls. Their numbers slowly grew allowing them to offer more bulls. They started by selling two-year olds and a few yearlings to satisfy customer needs. In 1994, they moved the bull sale home where it is still held. In 2010, they added online bidding with TEAM and DLMS. In 2014, they moved to a video sale and stopped putting the bulls through the sale ring but continued to have them penned just outside the sale barn. This year they sold 172 coming two-year old bulls. Performance testing has been a way to measure improvement at the operation since its inception. When the Canadian Charolais Association started the Conception to Consumer Program, Rawes Ranches were participants. They included performance data in their sale catalogues focusing on indexing. In 1990, the 14

introduction of EPDs provided another opportunity to measure improvement and they chose to pass this tool to their customers, being the first Charolais bull sale in Canada to print EPDs in the catalogue. Over time, they found accurate record keeping and consistent data submission contributed to proven and predictable EPDs. In 2000, the addition of carcass data was added to the catalogue. They took the time when delivering bulls to explain how EPDs worked and could be a beneficial tool in addition to soundness and eye-appraisal. “You can’t just cherry pick EPDs to focus on or you will see a deterioration in other traits. You can’t focus on one trait alone, we have to keep an eye on everything,” says Marie. John and Myrna’s son, Gene, completed a degree in agriculture at the University of Alberta. In 2003, he was offered a job with Alberta Beef Producers relating to

the BSE crisis. He also sat on the Canadian Charolais Association Breed Improvement Committee for a few years. He currently lives with his wife and young son in Airdrie and works as a firefighter for the City of Calgary. Philip and Marie (John and Myrna’s daughter) Harty bought 35 cows from a sale in Olds and 15 heifers from Rawes to get their start in the business in 1998. They were living in southern Alberta when they were hit with drought. During the second year of drought, they moved the cows north in June after calving in 2001. They baled what crop they had left and went to help Marie’s family with the workload. They stayed through fall and winter, but things didn’t look much better in the spring of 2002, so the cows and the family stayed. Then there was a drought with grasshoppers in 2002 at Strome. Their temporary move north was gradually becoming permanent and their responsibilities in the Strome operation were growing. “We rented out our farmland in the south and decided to stay another winter. In 2003, BSE hit and we had about three tough years after that with the markets. We didn’t keep any heifers for a couple of years, but we did increase the commercial herd with Angus-based cows,” tells Philip. “White bulls on black cows wasn’t really a thing then. We had 200 black cows with white bulls by the highway. It was an exciting time. I think cattlemen knew the value of the cross, but didn’t have the freedom to do it,” explains Marie. “We would get calls from people telling us they thought our Charolais bulls were in the wrong pasture,” adds Philip. “Last fall, I was sitting in Viking Auction Mart and there were groups of whites, tans and silvers coming in the ring together. The buyers weren’t pulling any from the group. Finally!”

Things really picked up in the bull sale about ten or twelve years ago when the demand for Charolais bulls started to come back after BSE. “It was not a good time being in the purebred business during BSE. We had a hard time justifying the extra work when we weren’t getting the return, but we pushed through and maintained our purebred herd. After BSE, the management of the whole farm changed. We went to later calving, in 2004, and focused on our two-year old bull program. We started growing the purebred herd again as we were down to 300 purebred cows. We started to work harder at the sale. We got to enjoy calving our own heifers and we built the herd a bit ahead of the increased surge for Charolais bulls. When the market came back, we had the supply. It was beyond me, but John felt the demand was going to come back and wanted to be ready,” shares Philip.

because you are always trying to achieve a better product,” states Marie. “The public relations work and the marketing is the most difficult for us, but it is also the most rewarding. You need that, to be able to do what you want to do, which is raise them,” explains Philip. “It isn’t enough anymore to be a really good labourer. You must be a marketer, a people manager and lawyer. You must wear so many hats and wear them well or you won’t be successful,” says Marie. They currently have 400 acres as a base for silage

Moving cows to new swath grazing

“When we wean in the fall, all the purebred calves are weighed, and we don’t cull anything. We try to keep everything in big groups until we have yearling weights. We need all the weights to make our EPDs accurate. and add to it as necessary. “We crop around 2200 acres around home and we are flexible with it. We silage whatever is necessary. This year we have a couple hundred acres that we planned to combine for seed, but it is lodged so bad we will end up silaging it. We doubled our acres of corn last year for silage and did it again this year. We are really trying to stay ahead of our feed requirements. It is such a nice feeling. We built another bunker for silage last year as we managed to fill the first one, which holds around 4500 tonnes. I like the dirt banks because there is no spoilage, once it is in there, it packs tight. Our main cash crops have been wheat and canola. We bale our own straw, to use in our feed ration, but still buy some from the neighbours. The last two years, the grain growing neighbours have become more willing to sell straw. They have noticed improvements in their canola crops when the heavy straw is removed from the barley rotation. The soil 18

warms up earlier in the spring and it is easier to get through to seed without plugging the equipment,” explains Philip. Rawes wean about 850 calves and background them to spring. They finish all their own purebred calves that do not make the bull sale or replacement breeding program. They have around 200 commercial cows and around 650 purebreds. “We are very fortunate to have enough grass and feed this year. We have been breeding all our best heifers for a couple of years (120-150), increasing our herd size, but we are slowing down now. Last year, we increased our land base and the commercials all went there and the purebreds stayed closer to home,” continues Philip. “When we wean in the fall, all the purebred calves are weighed, and we don’t cull anything. Keeping the best animals with the inferior ones, until the yearling weights are recorded, has been worthwhile. Only a few calves fall out due to injury and are not able to be kept until yearling weights are recorded. We need the weakest of the progeny recorded to make the best progeny have more accurate numbers. We band our first cull of yearling bulls in July and feed them to sell. Sometimes we prefer not to band them as we get better gains with less barley without the trauma.” The second cull will be in November when they get closer to the final sale offering. They have been fortunate to sell all cull bulls to a meat buyer in Edmonton that deals with the ethnic market. When they have a full load of fat steers or heifers, they are sold to JBS or Cargill. After weaning, they winter the purebred herd just north of the home place. They gradually move from corn grazing to some grass. There are five quarters in the rotation and the rest periods for the grass have really helped its health and longevity. All the bush is fenced so they don’t have to go through it when doing calving or health checks. It has saved so many hours. In the spring, they use quads or trucks to check, tag and process calves

when traveling between their multiple grazing areas. They calve starting the middle of April and the heifers lead the way. “As we increased the herd size, we have managed the heifers separately. They are weaned separately, they go to breeding fields separately, wintered separately and calved separately. It helps us to keep the numbers split up a bit. With our later calving, we probably rough the cows a little more than most people do. In the transition from frozen ground to spring breakup, we put them on grass and hopefully there is lots of carry-over. We have been lucky the last few years with good carry-over and haven’t fed when they got to grass. Sometimes we have had to supplement a bit until the green grass starts to come through the carry-over. We have too many cows to keep them tight to the yard for calving which eliminates the possibility of feeding silage during calving. Bale grazing has been a good alternative for this,” says Philip. “It is almost a different management program when you calve later. The last few years, we have fenced a lot of sloughs and dugouts and pump water to keep the cows from the mud. It was a lot of extra work, but so worth it. Since we have been keeping them out of the

mud, it has almost eliminated all problems. We did try solar pumps to provide drinking water but found our system didn’t have the capacity for the large number of cattle relying on it. Now we use gas pumps as they are more consistently reliable. We bought a couple of big tanks to gravity feed the waterers. Now we only pump every two or three days instead of daily.” “As the cows calve, we usually move about 80 pairs at a time, to fresh pasture. It is a nice number for us to process in a day and get hauled to their next grazing area. The later calving has definitely affected our weaning weights. It would be nice to shorten our breeding period more because the calves born at the end of June are only 150 days old when they are weaned, and they winter tough. We try to have our weaning weights in by the end of October. They wean small and we don’t push them hard during the winter, so their yearling weights are also small. They make a nice sized coming two-year old and they have been getting along well in the bull sale.” The Hartys have noticed a shift in their customers’ priorities. Customers were looking for calving ease but now some of the larger operations are focusing on performance again. “They have become comfortable with the calving ease and realize that having a live calf just isn’t enough. Now they want performance to increase their profit margin and bottom line,” adds Marie. “Our customers in the south market their calves in the fall. As you move north in the province, there is a lot more backgrounding happening, and full ownership retention to the fat market. I am not sure why, but that seems to be how it is in our customer base,” states Philip.

They lost their local vet a couple of years ago and have become self-sufficient in managing any challenges that come their way. This situation is not unique to many communities in Canada. “Last year, the Canadian Charolais Association did a feed efficiency test at Vermilion College. Originally, they wanted twenty heifers from five different breeders to get different sire groups. No one else would commit, so we ended up filling the pen with more than fifty. We sorted five heifers from eleven different sires to send. The results were interesting. The performance jived with the EPDs, it was interesting to see the highest performing cattle were also the most efficient. Efficiency is a tool we should be concentrating on more, so understanding feed efficiency was a natural step to increase the value of our program. It was also an investment into knowledge for our industry. Culling has been our biggest tool. We have bred more numbers for a few years and keep culling hard to improve the herd. The variation starts to come out of the numbers, and we get more consistency. If you keep eliminating the bottom ten percent, it is incredible how quickly the herd improves,” says Philip. “We have been accumulating ultrasound data on our bulls for over twenty years. This was a natural step to increase the value of our product.” “The carcass information we gathered in the past is great, but there is no opportunity for our customers to market it. The feed efficiency testing is something that should be marketable for our customers, down the road,” adds Marie. Rawes Ranches currently has two full-time employees, that have been with them seven and eight years and

very much appreciate their contribution to the operation. Rawes Ranches would ideally like to have four full-time employees to handle the workload efficiently. The fourth generation is being raised at Rawes Ranches as Marie and Philip Harty’s children experience and learn the ins and outs of the business. “They are all competent to do any job,” shares Marie, “but they are young, and time will tell if they want to continue with the operation and make it their own.” Ethan (18) was recently married and lives in Edmonton. His wife, Emily, attends the University of Alberta and Ethan is running a blacksmith business. He was also the 2019 Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion and has recorded and released two instrumental fiddle CDs. This time in Edmonton will also provide more professional music opportunities. Elizabeth (16) is taking her grade 11 through online studies. Her extra curricular activities of 4-H and Club Volleyball came to a halt with Covid, but more time at home provided an opportunity to participate more in

farming activities. Elizabeth was involved in calving, hauling silage, baling hay and straw, as well as driving a combine this fall. Austin (14) is taking his grade 9 through home schooling. He too became very active on the farm through this different time of Covid, by helping with calving, packing the silage pit, swathing and driving a combine. Austin made the switch to homeschool in Grade 7, and although it was an adjustment for everyone, he quite likes being able to get his school work done quickly and efficiently so he can get outside to things he finds more interesting. “We all work together. Myrna deserves a lot of credit for our success. She has been a huge support and push for the operation. She has worked right beside me the whole time,” John shares. “It is wonderful to have Philip and Marie here to continue and to watch their children grow. I don’t know if one of them will want to continue, but they are being raised right, and there is nothing more fulfilling than being here with them.”

Ethan Harty Blacksmith It all started with the oil cans that John and Myrna would look for in Arizona flea markets and bring back for Ethan. That led to antique tools, which fueled Ethan’s interest in blacksmithing. Ethan made artistic things when he was younger (belt buckles, bottle openers, wall hooks, etc.). Now he mainly makes tools for blacksmithing and has quite a collection of antique tools including anvils of varying sizes and origins. His 1912 steam engine works when the opportunity arises. They used it in a tractor pull and it just walked away with the sled. As long as it had the traction, it just kept pulling. “Ethan came home one day and said he had bought a steam engine. We thought that was neat, but it led to a lot of other jobs. Marie became

the president of the Heritage Boiler Association (Alberta), which oversees recertification of operators, etc.,” tells Philip. Marie continues, “It is heavily regulated by Alberta Boiler Safety Association. When Ethan was young, he volunteered to run steam engines at Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village and Museum south of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. When he got to be twelve, they decided he needed to have his steam license. We took him to Saskatoon to get his license because there was no age restriction in the legislation. We made the appointment and drove there and when the secretary saw he was only thirteen, she wasn’t going to let him write the exam.” Marie finally convinced the secretary to let him write it, and she agreed probably thinking it would appease him. He got the highest mark ever on the exam and they gave him his license. Then he was able to continue volunteering. The next year he got his Alberta license along with his parents. Ethan’s Alberta steam license came with a note saying he must be accompanied by an adult, until he was 16 years old, to comply with the provincial driving code. When Ethan was thirteen, Marie took him to England to take a blacksmith tool making class from Alex Steele. Now his teacher has moved to the United States and has contracted Ethan to supply tools for him to sell. Steele has a very highly watched YouTube channel. Now Ethan teaches blacksmithing classes and makes tools for blacksmithing. He ships them all over North America. The craft has become quite popular for hobbyists. “The best thing about it is there is no such word as can’t or won’t around here. You just do it,” states Philip.

Inducing Cows Safely Roy Lewis DVM

This is the time of year where the odd induced birth may be thought about but one is constantly weighing the pros and cons of doing this sort of procedure. There comes a time in cow calf production or purebred production to induce cows to calve for a number of reasons. This may be because there is an abnormal pregnancy, the cow has a life-threatening condition, pregnancy has gone on too long leading to health issues. There are other specific reasons where management of the calving season may warrant inducing cows. In all the cases very careful thought and examination must go into the final decision. The best outcome must be considered by yourself and your veterinarian, as every case is unique and the ultimate goal is to have both the cow and calf survive and go on to do well. If very close to the end of gestation, there are a few protocols to have a rather natural normal induction. The use of prostaglandins and dexamethasone in combination will give induction generally within 30-36 hours. I like to use the regular dose of prostaglandin (2cc of estrumate or equivalent product) and about 25 mg of dexamethasone, but again, your vet should have a formula they like for these prescription products. Everyone of these cases where induction has been contemplated, an emergency c-section has been contemplated as well. One is often balancing the time taken to induce and the determined gestational length with the odds of both the calf’s and dam’s survival. Sometimes the dam is in grave health and our main goal is trying to salvage the calf and other times the pregnancy is abnormal, so one is trying to remove the calf to save the cow. Conditions where I have induced cows or heard other veterinarians

induce cows with success are fetal anasarca (collection of fluid in the fetus), hydrops (abnormal amount of fluid accumulation in the uterus making it life threatening), severe peritonitis, heart failure from hardware disease, severe pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and even severe pneumonia. Cases where cows go down close to calving perhaps from getting too thin carrying twins are another example where inducing a bit early may get rid of the weight of the calves and uterine fluids allowing the cow to get up again. Downers pose their own set of management headaches and can also be the result of lack of a combination of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Downer cows must be on a soft well bedded area given feed and water. There are better ways to lift and transport them to a more suitable location. Management of downers is a whole other topic to discuss and as far as induction goes may be a day by day collective decision as to if, when and how induction will happen. Viability and closeness to due date, for the calf’s sake, is always a big decision. Do we have a breeding date (AI date or visualized breeding), how is udder fill and what does your veterinarian think on palpation? These are all very subjective calls and even if a breeding date is known, the breeds have quite a range and variation between them in gestational length. Any earlier than two weeks ahead and the calf is usually not viable. It is much easier if one is simply bringing on cows a bit earlier to tighten the end of the breeding season or for other management reasons an induction is contemplated. Here it is absolutely imperative to check the cow has good quality colostrum. The thick yellow sticky colostrum in all four teats indicates the cow/heifer is close enough to induce. If the colostrum looks like mucous, it is still too early and you must wait. If inducing, you

know they should calve within about the 36-hour window, but they may have been going to calve within the next few hours naturally, so watch them closely. In other words, the induction process was too late as calving was occurring naturally. Be warned the sick, toxic, thin, etc. cows usually do not produce much milk, so udder fill is not appropriate. With all inductions observe them closely and again the ultimate goal is to save cow and calf. One must keep in mind, the calf in utero is sort of mimicking what is going on with the cow. If she is short of breath because of pneumonia, the calf’s blood is not oxygenated normally; if she is toxic from bad mastitis or peritonitis, the calf will be suppressed. There is a big risk and reward with inducing. I have seen on some occasions where both cow and calf are lost but I have also seen live twins delivered from a downer cow and she subsequently got up so all three were saved. One never knows until one tries to treat them. If the cow is lost make sure to do a BSE test as the autopsy may give more of a clue as to the diagnosis. Usually, these are individual animal problems, but sometimes as in the cases of hardware disease (heart failure), or thin from lack of nutrition herd issues may be detected. With inducing cows for management reasons, they should always be very close to their due date and have good quality normal looking colostrum. They should also not retain their placentas if done properly as we are only talking about bringing them on a few days early. Here’s hoping calving goes well and we don’t run into many cows we need to induce. If there is the need, make sure to have your herd veterinarian help determine the most appropriate time. With abnormal pregnancies, you also know when they are going to calve so you can watch ever so closely. Here’s to a great calving everyone.

We Need All Types F. Rodney James

Rodney James was founder of the Canadian Charolais Banner in 1966 and publisher until 1983. This article was published nearly 50 years ago.

There is a tremendous amount of good genetic material in the Charolais breed. The wide variation of muscling, bone and overall type is a real asset, especially in these times in the beef industry when there are so many differences of opinion on what is optimum. There are breeders who are determined to produce bulls that will sire calves that any shape or size of cow will have without assistance. We all know that we need easy calving bulls The question is, when we reach the above objective, will we have a Charolais that will be capable of contributing significantly to the economic production of beef? There is no question that we can have a fair amount of frame and muscling without excessive calving problems and we must be aware of ease of calving. I firmly believe that we must work closely with our customers who appreciate the benefits of Charolais. Have you considered what kind of bull your customer could use five years from today if he shipped every cow he had to assist at calving before next year’s calving season. Shouldn’t we be asking ourselves why 90 per cent of the cows calved without assistance and why the 10 per cent needed help? If they were all bred to the same bull and managed and fed alike, why shouldn’t we blame those cows? Should we really be designing our Charolais bulls to suit the inferior 10 per cent of the cow population? I know of a seedy old boy that only visited his calving pasture once a week, that ended up with a herd of easy calving cows. When one of his cows couldn’t calve alone, she was

eliminated and also her offspring. No, I wouldn’t advise your suggesting this harsh a program to your customers, but even if he doesn’t have an individual indentification program – perhaps he could cut the tip off the ear or some mark so that she will be recognized in the fall and sent up the chute. Obviously, the same program should be applied to the Charolais herds. I have stressed the importance of your customers’ herds so that he can keep pace and successfully use the bulls you are producing. If we got rid of the cows that for one reason or another don’t calve easily, we would be able to place more emphasis on other important traits in our bull selection. Excess muscling, extreme rate of gain and larger frames no doubt are associated with hard calving. Unfortunately, these three traits are extremely important to making money in the beef business, and are the reasons that Charolais swept the country. The French cattle brought more docility, muscling and in most cases increased rate of gain. They also brought more calving problems. Have we over-reacted? The C-C program was designed not just to measure ease of calving but a number of the above traits. But, most people looked at the ease of calving score and sometimes little or nothing else. Isn’t it time we got back to selecting more for rate of gain and start bragging about the performance of our cattle again? Surely muscle is important, unless you feel people are going to start eating bone, hide and fat. We need a broad genetic base! This means we need, within the Charolais population, some extremes. If everyone breeds the same type, what will happen down the road if we find we were on the wrong track? Charolais Banner • December 2020

Look how the Hereford people got back on the main line. They found those big Herefords that had been shunned for many years. A few breeders stubbornly went on breeding that type, regardless of what was popular in the show ring because they felt that pounds of beef would always be popular. They have been well rewarded in recent years. The Show Ring? Many breeders are expressing concern today that the show ring is going too far to the extreme. The trick is to observe, listen to the judge’s reasons, AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND. The right type of cattle for you is the type that suits the needs of you and your customers. Surely you are strong enough to make up your own mind. If it isn’t the type that a college professor judge likes, so what? Very likely, you are making more money directly out of the cattle business than he is anyway. It is one man’s opinion on a given day, down the road tomorrow another judge may have entirely different views. Judges always have had reasons for the types they like. They have been wrong before. By the way, I am not suggesting for a minute that they are wrong today. Nor am I suggesting there shouldn’t be shows. But, I’m sure most judges would be quick to point out the need for variation within any breed. Go ahead and breed your type of cattle, don’t be too critical of those that prefer a different type because you just might be going to him some day to get back on the main line. The middle of the road is the farthest from each ditch, so is probably the most comfortable place for most breeders. The challenge is seeing how close you can come to either ditch without have a wreck! The road is wide enough for everyone. Pick your spot and charge on! 63

Canadian Beef Breeds Council Report Michael Latimer, CBBC Executive Director

As we reflect on the year 2020, it will not be soon forgotten. It now appears the pandemic will continue deep into 2021 and we need to be prepared for this as an industry and in our daily lives. We tend to focus on the negative aspects of COVID and there are certainly a lot, but we also need to recognize the success in our industry where we have been fortunate. As we all remember, the pandemic hit in the middle of the bull sale season. Producers adapted and complied with ever changing restrictions and uncertainty. Sales continued with prices being similar to the previous year which showed the strength of our producers and their steadfast resolve while facing adversity. Agriculture was designated an essential service which allowed our cattle sales to continue, but it also allowed for uninterrupted trade with the USA, our largest trading partner. The exchange of beef, semen, embryos and live cattle with the US are critical to the stability of our market. There were many more successes through the year that we can be proud of as an

industry and on personal levels. As we look forward to 2021, there are several ongoing initiatives that will be important to the industry. We will need to be flexible and adjust our international market development program in response to changing market conditions due to the COVID pandemic. This is a collaborative effort across breed associations, livestock exporters, livestock exhibitions, agricultural service providers and breeders to promote and generate sales of beef genetics both internationally and at home in Canada. The disruption in our industry through the cancellation of our livestock events will have ripple effects and we will need to re-establish our connection with international buyers and government officials in foreign countries. It is likely that travel will still be restricted well into 2021, so we will need to continually improve and utilize our online and digital marketing programs in order to accomplish this. This will be one of the most important investments that our industry organizations and breeders can make at this time in order to showcase our genetics to the world.

The Canadian Beef Improvement Network initiative is entering a new phase in its development. It is supported by the major breed associations and has participation from across the production and retail system. As a division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and the hub for the seedstock sector, CBBC will serve as the incubator for CBIN to ensure its successful implementation. The next phase of CBIN will include increased advocacy efforts to industry stakeholders and development of its core foundation. A goal of CBIN is to build upon existing genetic improvement programs with a focus on the commercial cattle sector. The commercial cow/calf sector has always been an integral part of genetic improvement through bull selection but have never been actively included in the development programs offered by the seedstock sector. There is an opportunity through the CBIN platform to connect the industry with a made in Canada solution. Obituary

Stanley (Stan) Petracek passed away April 28th, 2019, at the age of 93, in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Stan and his wife Margaret raised their six children on the family farm overlooking the Cutarm Creek east of the K1 Mosaic Potash Mine at Yarbo. Stan and Margaret were founding members of the South East Saskatchewan Charolais Breeders in 1974, of which Stan was president for two years. They bought their first Charolais bull from Denzil and Wilma Sutton, Rocanville for $750 in 1971. From there, Petracek Polled Charolais was formed, which included Stan and

Stanley (Stan) Petracek Margaret’s son, Jim, and wife, Marilyn Petracek. Stan was involved in grain farming, but his true passion was that of a cattleman. He could always be found standing in the center of the pasture surrounded by his beautiful white cattle, who came to greet him as though he was their best friend. Stan was a 4-H leader for many years and his volunteerism in his community was extremely important to him. Stan and Margaret retired to Esterhazy in 1991, enjoying travelling across North America, always stopping in to meet Charolais breeders along the way. Stan was an avid sports fan supporting local hockey and baseball teams. Lifelong follower of his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs

Ernie Esau, formerly of Ernmore Polled Charolais, Elm Creek, Manitoba, passed away October 26th in Carmen, at the age of 87. I had known Ernie for 40 years and he is one of the sharpest stockmen I knew. Ernie was a keen learner and taught anyone that wanted to learn about observing livestock. I worked with Ernie for over 20 years

and Toronto Blue Jays, Stan himself enjoyed participating in sports and only hung up his own hockey skates at the age of 83. Stan’s greatest legacy is the sense of family he created with Margaret. The love and pride he had for his family was felt by all his children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a loyal brother, beloved uncle, and friend to so many. Stan had an innate ability to make everyone feel important and special knowing they were loved and respected by him. Stan is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret, six children, 5 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren.

Ernie Esau while he was in the Charolais industry and saw him promote his cattle and Manitoba across North America. His trophy and ribbon room showed the countless shows right across Canada and the U.S.A. he participated in with success. One sire that Ernie raised, named Ernmore Karl With A K, had a profound influence in the polled Charolais herds in Sweden showing his genetics and influence went worldwide. A prominent Shorthorn breeder

for many years, he was awarded the prestigious Builder of the Breed award from the American Shorthorn Association. Ernie sat on the Canadian Charolais Association board of directors from 1991 to 1996 and was inducted into the Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2019. Pre-deceased by his wife of 58 years, Irma in 2013, he was very proud of their six children, 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

HKS MS KENZIE 137G (Whitecap Embargo 7E), Howe Coulee Charolais, Moose Jaw, was chosen as the Reserve Champion Yearling Heifer, Any Other Breed. 2020 Agribition Junior Spotlight HKS MS KENZIE 137G, exhibited by Elise Howe, Howe Coulee Charolais, won Grand Champion Any Other Breed Female and Reserve Champion Female in the Junior Spotlight show.

2020 Agribition Virtual Youth Judging Competition Madisyn Robertson, Neepawa, MB, was named the Overall Intermediate Judge in the youth competition. Madisyn is a CCYA Alumni and daughter of Daylse and Paul Robertson, Hardrock Land & Cattle Co. Participants in this virtual competition judged classes of market hogs, light horses, bull calves, bred heifer and finished steers. Depending on their age group, they gave oral reasons on the classes assigned to them.

Grant Shuttleworth

Grant Ralston Shuttleworth passed away March 21, 2020, at the age of 88. Grant was born in Calgary, Alberta, and was raised on the family farm at Balzac. Grant attended Buttes School, and then completed his high school at Mount Royal. After graduation, he took Agriculture Mechanics at SAIT. Grant spent his life farming and raising purebred

Charolais cattle in the Balzac area. Grant was a pioneer in the purebred Charolais business. He was a founder of the South Central Alberta Charolais Breeders group 40 years ago. His son, Darryl, and family carry on the cattle operation as Charworth Charolais Ltd. He enjoyed travelling; visiting many destinations around the world, sharing these experiences with family and friends. He also took pleasure in cheering on the Stampeders and Flames. He was very active in various volunteer organizations, including

Balzac United Church, Samaritan’s Purse, the Calgary Stampede, Nose Creek Historical Society, the Airdrie and District Museum Society, Alberta 4-H, and Medical Mercy Canada. In addition to his community involvement, he cherished time with family. Besides his loving wife Katherine, of sixty-two years, Grant is survived by his children, Wayne (Sharon), Karen (Dave) Kosa and Darryl (Maria); and seven grandchildren, Russell, Laura, Nicholas, Joel, Amber, Alex, and Rebecca.

ASSOCIATION NEWS

The 57th Annual Saskatchewan Charolais Association Annual General Meeting was held November 28th in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. 13 voting members were in attendance including most of the board of directors. Jordan Moore, Redvers, was elected President with Kurtis Phillips, Estevan, moving up to 1st Vice-President; while Justin Cay, Kinistino was elected to the 2nd Vice-President position. The position of Secretary-Treasurer is being held by the Saskatchewan Livestock Association, Regina. Reelected to another three year term on the nine-member board was Jordan Moore. Matt Jones, Gull Lake, and Stephen Wielgosz, Yellow Creek, stepped off the board. Kody Meier, Kerrobert, and Duncan Spenst, Waldeck, were elected to their first terms on the board. The 2019 financial statement showed net earning a loss of $1,644 on revenues of $42,418 and expenses of $44,062. The Association is in good shape with over $60,000 in current assets, most of that cash and term deposits.

Retiring Directors Matt Jones and Stephen Wielgosz were presented with tokens of appreciation for their time on the board.

Saskatchewan Charolais AGM Promotion and Newsletter were the biggest expenditures in the budget at over $11,000. They are currently running advertising either in the form of flip ads or permanent signage in every livestock market in the province. They also supported or attend Ag in Motion, Canadian Western Agribition, Edam Fall Fair and Young Ranchmans in 2019. Michael Elder, Coronach, the Canadian Charolais Association president updated the meeting on happenings at the CCA level, including going to 6 EPD runs per year, there are 37 heifers in the

Residual Feed Intake test at Vermilion College and they are helping each province with a $1,000 to go towards promotion of the breed. The SCA is going to a scholarship for youth instead of the credits to purchase heifers, which they have done in the past few years. In 2021, Canadian Western Agribition will be holding their 50th Anniversary show which was postponed from this year. There will also be a Playerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Classic held in conjunction and an aged bull class will be added.
