HTA Charolais 2021 Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome to the 2021 Edition of the HTA Charolais Bull Sale Although 2020 was a bit of a crazy year, to say the least, I think we can all agree that being in the agricultural industry is one of the best places to be during these challenging times. As a family run operation, we enjoyed the extra time the past year has allowed us to spend together. Our passion is cattle and our goal is to supply our commercial cattle customers with bulls that go out and work for several years, without sacrificing calving ease or growth. We work very hard to keep the quality of the bulls high and we stand behind them. We moved the sale home last year to allow us the opportunity to better display the sale bulls, and allow us the ability to show their dams, cow families and the rest of the cow herd and herdsires. Astroid, High Class, Morgan and Bishop will be at the farm for viewing. Astroid’s dam, at 14 years of age, Morgan’s dam, at 11 years of age, and Contender’s great-great-granddam, at 15 years of age, are all here, still producing and it shows the longevity in these cow families. We tested a select group of bulls again this year for the homozygous polled gene. New this year, we 50K tested several bulls as well. The 50K test increases accuracies of EPDs. We are pleased to have Kris Kristjanson as part of our team again this year. We asked Kris to be a contact for anyone wanting a second opinion, or anyone who may just rather talk to a fellow commercial producer. Please do not hesitate to give him a call. Our sale is a video sale. The bulls will not be walking through a sale ring. We encourage you to come early to have a good look through the bulls. The bulls will be available for viewing anytime prior to the sale or come early sale day. We will be following Covid-19 guidelines and are unsure at this time what restrictions will be in place. We hope and will plan to serve lunch prior to the sale for those that are able to attend in person. We also invite you to stay after the sale to visit with us and enjoy some hospitality. HTA CHAROLAIS 2 2021 Bull Sale

Welcome, from Kris Kristjanson Having had the privilege of doing business with the great folks at HTA Charolais, I can say with the utmost confidence that their operation has been and continues to be one of the best. Behind HTA are Shawn and Tanya, two individuals who value honesty and integrity above all else. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in the business who would match their practices. Having sourced bulls from HTA for many years, I can speak to the quality of these sires and what they will bring to your herd. The genetic superiority of these bulls is next to none. With the extensive culling program implemented at HTA, you can rest assured that sire selection has been based on the best pedigrees and top performing animals. Selection for traits such as fertility, maternal ability, temperament, longevity and feed efficiency makes these bulls versatile, and able to find a place in any program. It’s safe to say that bringing HTA genetics into my herd was one of the best business decisions I made. As a producer, seeing your herd improve year after year is one of the most gratifying experiences. Not only are the effects marked on farm, but also at the auction mart. On tough years like we have had recently, easy keeping cattle who maintain condition right through to fall sell far better. It’s amazing what a little careful selection can do for your bottom line. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself! If I can be of any assistance in sourcing a bull, please give me a call at 1-204-648-5038.

Welcome, From By Livestock Welcome to the 2021 edition of the HTA Bull Sale being held at the farm, near Rivers, for the second year. If you missed being there last year, the video sale in their heated facility is very comfortable, with the bulls just outside on display. The dams of the bulls are close by too, if you want to have a look. You are welcome to go to the farm and view the bulls and the operation any time prior to the sale. If you can’t make it sale day, you can view the sale and bid online on DLMS, be on a phone, or leave an order. Chase and Blake do a great job on the bulls and they are as quiet a set of bulls as you will find anywhere. There are bulls that are suited for your heifers, but they also have bulls that won’t cause any problems calving, but will give you as much pay weight in the fall as you can find. Their many repeat commercial customers, who sell heavy weight calves, are a testament to how their program has provided bulls to not only the commercial industry, but many great purebred herds across the country and into the USA. This year, they 50K tested over ½ of the sale bulls. Look for the explanation of this with the sale information and notice the bulls tested throughout the catalogue. Over a 1/3 of the offering has been tested Homozygous Polled, if that is a selection criteria for you. If you have any questions, give them a call, or stop in before the sale to look through the offering and a powerful cowherd. We know you will be impressed. If Jon, Candace, or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you a bull that is right for your program. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By 306.536.4261 Jon Wright 306.807.8424

50K Testing and Why It Is Valuable

American Friends

EPDs contain information from an animal’s pedigree, performance data and now, possibly DNA, which is used directly to calculate the EPD for that animal in each specific trait. The use of DNA testing (50K test) in the EPD calculation allows us to dramatically increase the accuracy of the EPD. These Genomically Enhanced EPDs (GEPDs) allow us to better predict the genetic potential for animals that are tested, particularly in young cattle (i.e. yearling bulls) that do not yet have any offspring to evaluate.

We will ensure all health tests required for export and completed at the Buyer’s expense. Bulls will be delivered to the nearest point of entry at the seller’s convenience. Exchange rates will be announced at the start of the sale.

The 50K test is roughly equivalent to the reporting of: 25 offspring from the tested animal when calculating birth weight 15 offspring from the tested animal when calculating weaning weight 8 offspring from the tested animal when calculating yearling weight The 50K test also identifies differences the pedigree alone cannot predict. Full siblings were always assumed to share 50% of their DNA, based on average. The use of the 50K test works to understand the ancestral source of DNA. Evaluations have shown the range of shared DNA can be as low as 35% to 65% or higher. Instead of 25% from each grandparent, it has identified that 30% or more may come from a single grandparent and much less from others. In our catalogue, please note the difference by these designations: EPD = no genomics included GEPD = genomic tested

HTA CHAROLAIS 5 2021 Bull Sale

Our Program We are a family run operation that have been raising Charolais cattle for over 50 years and we are extremely passionate about it. Our mission is to consistently produce top quality Charolais bulls, that add performance and value to herds of all breeds. Our program at HTA is built on years of carefully selected genetics and is just that...a program. We don’t follow fads. We stick to the basics of what Charolais should be – a performance breed. Our goal is to be in the business for a long time and we hold ourselves to a high level of honesty and integrity. The fundamental building blocks of our program is our females. As you look through the pedigrees, you will find many repeat cow families for good reason. Years and years of strategic breeding and selection have built our current cowherd of 160 breeding females. We strive for mothers that are sound structured, efficient, fertile and motherly with quality udders and good dispositions. Great bulls come from great cows. It starts with vigorous calves that are born unassisted and hit the ground and grow. Calving ease is a priority. Vigorous calves born unassisted IS calving ease. We prioritize unassisted born calves that are up in minutes looking to nurse their mothers. We do not have time (or patience) for helping calves get up or suck. Our replacement heifer pen is just as important as the bull pen. This is the future of our herd. We focus on providing appropriate nutrition for proper development and fertility and not to carry extra condition. We breed for 60 days only to keep fertility high. Disposition is a main priority to us. We handle our cattle on foot and in a low stress manner. The quiet dispositions are one of the first things that people notice when visiting our herd. Bottom line, we expect a lot from our herd. Calving ease, vigour, growth, confirmation and structure, fertility, disposition, efficiency... We are constantly looking for new genetics to improve our cowherd, but finding genetics that meet all of our criteria is no easy task. You can bet the bulls we breed our cows to have been very carefully and strategically selected. We spend many hours selecting genetics and strive for the best. Never single-trait selecting. We run a strict quality control program and cull hard. We only keep the best and cull the rest. Quality over quantity.

Nutrition and exercise are an important part of our herd health management at HTA. Cows are put to pasture June 1st and graze as late in the fall as possible. We carefully manage the land so as not to overgraze pastures. Cows are then fed barley silage and barley straw and expected to walk to water until Christmas, when they are brought in for calving. After calving, their diet is supplemented with rolled barley for energy for milking and in preparation for rebreeding. Chelated minerals – including summer, winter and breeding formulations and free choice salt blocks are provided year-round. Calves are weaned in the fall and fed free choice hay. We start them on oats and the bull calves are then moved onto an oat and corn-based ration focused on proper development and longevity. Heifers are fed rolled oats and barley with the focus being on providing proper nutrition for growth and fertility. We don’t want the bulls or heifers to carry extra condition. We want the bulls to be in prime condition to go out and work, and the heifers to breed (at 14-15 months of age) and continue to grow and mature and reach their potential. Calves are weighed at birth, at weaning. and at 1 year of age, to monitor growth performance and weights are recorded. Cows are weighed going onto pasture each year. Vaccinating is an integral part of the HTA herd health management. Calves are given Toltrazuril, at 1 week of age, and Bovishield Gold 5 (BVD, IBR, PI3, BRSV) and Ultrabac 7/Somubac before going to pasture. Bovishield Gold One Shot and Ultrabac 7/Somubac at weaning. Cows are given Bovishield Gold FP5 and Scourguard prior to calving, and Covexin 8 before going to pasture every other year. We are continuously appraising the cows, bull and heifer pens and culling. We cull for many reasons to keep the quality high. If a bull or heifer does not meet our expectations, has structural issues, or a bad disposition, etc., they are culled. We are proud of the progress we have made in our herd and the direction our program is headed. We invite you to come for a visit, tour the herd and to talk cattle anytime. We enjoy the opportunity to visit with you about our program as well as your program. We know our cows and the bulls and you know your cows – together we can find the right bull to fit your herd. Success can be measured in many ways. One of our measures is our high percentage of repeat customers. Our customers are the most important part of our business!

Did You Know?

We weigh all of our cows the beginning of June as we process them for pasture. We do this to provide our customers with the birthweight as a % of dam calculation. We feel looking at the size of the cow is important when looking at birthweight. 100 lb calf out of a 1900 lb, 10 year old cow is different than a 100 lb calf out of a 1400 lb, two-year old cow.

The Percentage Calving Chart

1. An average cow of any breed should be able to calve 7% of her body weight. 2. Most Charolais cows will weigh between 1400-1800 lb., expected calf weight to range from 98 to 126 lb. 3. Most Red Angus cows will weigh between 1200-1600 lb, expected calf weight range 84 to 112 lb. 4. Calving ease is MORE important than birth weight because a longer sided calf may calve easy, but the birth weight is higher.

HTA fact We believe birthweight and calving ease are two totally different things. There are multiple factors that affect calving ease including the shape of a calf, environment, etc. If we do not think a bull will calve, we do not offer them for sale. Buy with confidence. HTA fact Our replacement heifer pen needs to be as strong as our bull pen. Strong, foundation females are the base of our herd. It is no accident that you will find many repeat cow families throughout the pedigrees. The females are where it all begins and where herdsires are made.

Astroid is a bull we raised. His Dam is a no-miss cow, still producing in our herd at 14 years of age. This summer she was awarded the Dam of Excellence award from the CCA. 704T is the maternal sister to HTA Scorpio 874U (Rawes Ranches) and HTA Bradack 137Y (Sandan Charolais). Astroid ranked #1 at weaning and at yearling and his disposition is unmatched. His muscle shape and growth could not be ignored. Astroid calved like a dream with an early gestation and exceptional vigor in his calves. We have used him successfully, not only on cows, but on heifers as well. Astroid’s calving ease and growth are impressive, and the docility that he passes on to his offspring is something you almost have to see to believe. To top it all off, he is Homozygous Polled and Leptin TT. He’s the total package and needless to say, we are very excited about this sire’s progeny. His progeny have been well received. His daughters are great mamas with beautiful udders.

The Lanza pedigree needs no introduction. When we saw this Lanza son, he definitely caught our interest. Once we saw High Class’s dam, we were sold. Just the type of cow we like, deep, good footed and good uddered. The High Class calves were stand-outs on the pasture all summer. They are sound structured, hairy and have performance and growth. The first calf heifers calved well and have lots of milk.

We raised Reliable and admired him so much we decided to keep him for use in our own herd. We have used Reliable successfully on heifers and on cows. We have several daughters in the herd. Reliables are structurally correct, hairy and they grow!

We purchased Watchman from the Wrangler Charolais program in 2019 to use on our heifers. He is long-spined and good footed. His calves have good dispositions and the calves in the sale out of first calf heifers are good.

Contender is a homozygous polled bull we raised out of one of our best cow families. His great, great granddam is still a strong producer in our herd at 15 years of age. Contender’s dam is picture perfect. The Challenge x Remington combination is magical. It is no secret what Remington has done for our herd. We believe every good bull should sire sons better than himself and Remington hit it out of the park with Contender. Contender was the highest selling bull in Manitoba in 2017. The growth, performance and consistency in his offspring are exactly what we expected.

Honcho is a bull we saw as a yearling and as a two-year old on the show road and liked what we saw. We purchased a semen pack to use as an outcross pedigree in our herd. In 2017, Honcho was National Senior Bull Calf Champion, and in 2018 was Grand Champion bull at CWA as a two-year old. His dam has a long resume and proven track record.

No introduction needed here. Remington has been used hard in our herd for several years and for good reason. The power and performance in the calves combined with the calving ease is hard to match. He has remained in the top 1% of the breed for weaning and yearling. You’ll find many Remington daughters in our herd and sons working in many herds across the country.

Morgan was a calf we sold in our 2013 sale to the Eastmans. When delivering bulls over the years, we always admired the offspring from Morgan and how good footed he was – especially for a red factor bull. At 9 years of age, Morgan still moves very freely. He is a gentle giant that passes on his docility to his calves. His dam remains a solid producer in our herd at 11 years of age.
