It is right after Agribition as I write this and what a great fall it has been so far.

The averages of the early sales were higher and the crowds at the shows and sales have been great. Lots of enthusiasm and excitement have been experienced all fall, as well as many new faces and breeders have participated. By the time you read this, most of the female sales will be wrapped up and I am sure we will look back at what was a great fall.

We were invited to the U.S. National show and meetings in Louisville, Kentucky, and will have full coverage of that in the February Banner. It was a great trip with some great information to share on what we and participants from other parts of the world learned.

Speaking of the World, the interest in the 2024 World Congress here in Canada is strong. Please contact the breeders where we are stopping if you would like to display some of your program to producers from around the globe. The host farms would like to get an idea of numbers, etc. We anticipate breeders from 14 countries to be in attendance.

The next CCA AGM, Foundation Breeders School and Fundraising Auction will be held in conjunction

with the SCA AGM and Sask Royal Sale on June 6th and 7th in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Mark your calendars now as you will not want to miss this fun and educational couple of days.

The spring bull sales are looking very positive with the calf market this fall being at record levels. There were also many bulls being sold out of commercial herds earlier than normal and rather than buy feed for them, they will just replace them this spring.

Once again this fall, there have been many commercial cows going to market, so we all need to be aggressive in our marketing to pick up more market share and replace the customers who have quit. Some of this is due to drought and some is age. It is unfortunate because with the North American cow numbers down, the cattle market looks poised to be very good for several years.

Also in this issue, you will see the 2024 Charolais Calendar. We sponsor this great fundraiser for the Canadian Charolais Youth Association and we thank everyone who participated in it and all the junior members who helped to sell it.

I have talked about this before, but one topic to be reminded of is the case of Barn Blindness. The symptom shows when producers are so close to their operation that it is hard for them to step back and see what they

need to improve the quality of their program. This happens at all levels and as a breeder, you can ask some of your good customers, or fellow breeders, where they would like to see your product improve. You can return the favour by looking hard at your customers’ herds. An outside opinion is always a good thing and if it is objective, it can be very constructive and profitable. Over the years, I have seen breeders keep buying some of the same problems into their herds, rather than giving something else up to correct a situation in their cow base. Breeding cattle is a series of compromises and you must always strive to not compromise the same things repeatedly.

We are poised for a great bull selling spring, but you still need to work on staying in touch with past customers and getting the best pictures and videos for the promotion of them to maximize your returns.

Robbie Chomik and I are now preparing our spring picture and video schedules, so if you would like some help with those and promoting your program in the spring Connections, please don’t hesitate to drop us a line.

Wishing each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous Charolais New Year.

Until next time,

Helge

The Charolais Banner families wish you a season of peace, joy and love.

May 2024 be filled with blessings of good health, happiness and abundance!

The CCA board held their fall meetings in mid October at the office in Calgary. The agenda was full of very important items. One of the items was the fee structures. The fees have not been increased for over 10 years, and as most of you know, expenses have had a significant increase. The board did not take this decision lightly and after looking at all the options, the decision was made to increase the Whole Herd fee from $26 per cow to $28 per cow. The board also made the decision to start to use the interest on the investment portfolio to help offset the rise in expenses.

Another agenda item was one that has been talked about for many years and that is the debate on the CCA office building, whether to sell it or keep it. Currently, the CCA only utilizes 2 offices, and the rest are rented. The rent does help with a portion of the expenses, but the maintenance of the aging building continues to rise. We have kept up with the maintenance, so the building is in good shape and has significant value. In the next few months, I will be looking into our options for the CCA office.

The board along with it’s committees continue to move this breed forward and are investigating some projects both within our breed and some that will help advance Charolais in the beef industry.

The 2023 National show and sale was held in Brandon, MB. October 26 to 28th. There were 67 entries in the show and the sale had 16 ¾ lots to average $10,860. Cattle were sold right across the country. I also attended the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup. This year there were 30 entries in the show. The American International

WHAT A FALL!

Charolais Association along with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture invited me to their fall meetings and US National Show in Louisville, Kentucky. There were seven of us onthe tour from 5 countries. We were fortunate to tour some breeders as well as a research farm and see some beautiful countryside. After the Tour I attended the AICA Breed Improvement committee meeting, the Advertising and Marketing meeting, the Commercial committee meeting, as well as their full AICA Board meeting. I was asked to participate in several discussions and our two organizations will continue to work together to enhance the trade of genetics. I would like to thank the AICA board and staff, as well as the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for the wonderful hospitality. After a quick stop at home, I was off to Agribition in Regina. The first few days at Agribition are filled with industry meetings, these meetings are always educational. The Charolais breed is very important to the beef industry, and I am proud I get to represent it. One of the highlight meetings was a round table discussion with Canadian beef industry leaders and a delegation of breeders from Mexico on the challenge of exporting and importing both live and frozen genetics. We hope that the organizations that represent us will champion these concerns with their respective government agencies.

There were 121 entries in the Agribition show, with entries from right across Canada. The sale featured 14 ½ lots to average $10,555. Lots were sold across North America. The Charolais breed was well represented in the CN Supreme show as well. I was not able to attend the Toronto Royal this year but, congratulations to

WOW! QUEL AUTOMNE!

With the end of 2023 in sight, it’s a good time to look back on the challenges, opportunities, and accomplishments of the past year. The perseverance of Canadian cattle producers continued to be put to the test with another year of adverse weather conditions — from continued drought conditions in the west, to excess rain in the east, to wildfires in many provinces. It’s easy to focus on the challenges, but there were many positive outcomes and momentum gained this year that deserve mentioning.

The uncertainty created by adverse weather was top of mind this year. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) monitored the situation closely along with our provincial member associations to better understand the impacts on cattle producers and the support needed.

The rollout of the AgriRecovery program targeting cattle producers in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, by both federal and provincial governments, was long overdue, but welcome news. It will provide much needed support for winter feeding costs, transportation costs relating to moving livestock to feed and water, and re-establishing forage crops damaged by wildfires. CCA, working in stride with our provincial associations, pushed hard for the timely completion of the AgriRecovery assessments and rollout of support.

Advocacy work is ongoing to strengthen business risk management (BRM) programming including expanding Livestock Price Insurance to the Maritimes and improving forage insurance offerings across Canada. CCA chairs an Industry Government Forage Insurance Task Team, where work with governments

Canadian Cattle Association President’s Report

over the years has improved forage insurance. These programs are timelier and more dependable compared to AgriRecovery.

Adverse weather events have demonstrated the need for more effective tools for producers managing weather-related risks. A key recommendation in our 2024 pre-budget submission is amending the Livestock Tax Deferral provision under the Income Tax Act to give producers the ability to self-elect rather than rely on a geographic determination, as well as expanding it to include all classes of cattle.

The trade file has kept us busy with issues that can threaten our ability to export Canadian beef. With exports bringing significant added value to cattle producers, we needed to up our engagement with Parliamentarians on key issues including Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management), trade with the United Kingdom (UK), and Product of the USA.

Earlier this year, Bill C-282 gained momentum and received all party support. This Bill, which takes supply-managed sectors off the table during trade negotiations, could severely damage our trade relationships and highly constrain Canada’s ability to launch, negotiate and renegotiate the best deals.

The Bill is now in the Senate, and our advocacy efforts have ramped up, urging Senators to vote against this Bill.

Significant time was dedicated to defending the interests of Canadian beef producers in trade negotiations –particularly when it comes to the UK accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP).

It is important that the staggering trade imbalance between Canada

and the UK, resulting from nontariff trade barriers, is addressed and resolved during bilateral negotiations. Last year, we didn’t export any beef to the UK while Canada imported $C33 million in beef from the UK. Through the “Say No to a Bad Deal” campaign, we are urging the Government of Canada to push for the UK to remove its trade barriers before ratifying the CPTPP accession.

We are monitoring the progress of the proposed amendment to the voluntary “Product of the USA” label. We worked closely with the Government of Canada and industry stakeholders to ensure our consultation submissions were complementary.

Our concern remains that the proposed rule states that any beef product labelled as “Product of the USA” must be derived from cattle that are born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in the United States (U.S.). If adopted, exports of Canadian beef and live cattle into the U.S. could be significantly impacted and the integrated nature of our North American supply chain would be threatened.

It has not been all negative news on trade. This year saw Japan and Taiwan lift remaining BSE-era restrictions following Canada’s attainment of BSEnegligible risk status by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) in 2021. These decisions may signal other countries in the IndoPacific region to follow suit.

On the animal health and care front, we were pleased to see Federal Budget Day 2023 bring good news for our industry with an investment of $57.5 million over five years to establish a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine bank and develop emergency response plans. We advocated for this tirelessly over the last few years and ..continued on page 32

it was an urgent advocacy priority in 2022.

The establishment of this vaccine bank is critical with the ongoing threat of FMD remaining high. It provides our industry with an important tool to regain export markets if FMD finds its way here. We are actively working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on this important piece of the wideranging animal health file.

We are building momentum in sharing the environmental benefits of

cattle production in Canada– whether it’s CCA or our young leaders carrying this important message to policymakers here at home or on the international stage. We have a lot to be proud of when it comes to being stewards of our land and caring for our animals. It is critical that we participate in discussions about climate change and livestock systems to showcase our leadership in sustainable beef production and celebrate the innovative practices undertaken by Canadian cattle

producers through the Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA). Voices pushing to take beef off the table and cattle off the land are very loud and active at these international meetings. Protectionist countries also have a big presence. If we are not there, vocal and determined, there will be negative impacts felt on our own operations.

On behalf of CCA’s board and staff, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Manitoba Charolais Association AGM

The 56th MCA Annual General Meeting was held October 5, 2023, in Brandon, Manitoba. With 20 in attendance, the meeting was casual with good discussion.

The financial report for the year ending December 31, 2022, showed expenses over revenue of $14,000 with the CCA AGM and AG-EX being two of the bigger shortfalls. At the time of this meeting there is still over $35,000 in the bank.

Discussion was held on the upcoming National show and Player’s Club with good interest.

There were also reports from the website, social media, scholarship and bulletin committees. In 2023, the MCA gave embroidered director chairs to all 4-H members showing Charolais influenced animals. This was very well received and was the envy of the youth not showing Charolais.

The Executive stayed the same with Michael Hunter, Roblin, as president; Owen Sellman, McCreary, 1st VicePresident; Scott Baron, Carberry, 2nd Vice-President and Rae TrimbleOlson, Portage la Prairie, SecretartyTreasurer. Election of Directors saw Bert McDonald retiring with Tyler Stewart, Foxwarren; Michael Hunter,

Roblin and Jared Preston, Ste. Rose, returning for another three-year term and Trent Hatch, Oak Lake, returning to the board for another three-year term after taking a few year’s break.

Shawn Airey, Rivers, as President of the Canadian Charolais Association, gave an update from the CCA board and office.

The MCA Ambassador of the Year was voted on and won by Ron and Gail McDonald of R & G McDonald Livestock, Sidney, and the Commercial Producer of the year was won by the Hanslip family, Triple Oak Farms, Eriksdale.

The Proverbial Retest of the Semen Evaluation

Anyone in the cattle industry that has had to have a bull retested may want to read through this. I know this is a dicey situation, especially for purebred owners who pay to have a bull redone that is questionable. It is not fun for veterinarians either and we all wish bulls would pass outright or fail terribly, whereby culling was the only option. The bulls that have decision deferred are more work to do a second time and we often collect them twice and some still can remain decision deferred.

In this article, I will try to give some concrete management things we can all do that will hopefully cut down the bulls to redo. This will be a win-win situation.

We can never get rid of all of them but a reduction would be good and some can get culled ahead of time avoiding any need to semen evaluate them in the first place.

I would say with most yearling bulls, the redo rate will be upwards of 20 percent and with mature herd sires 10 percent, or at least that has been my experience over the years. A few things purebred breeders can do ahead of time to reduce this is potentially measure and cull the obvious small, below minimum scrotal size. The discussion can be made what is the true cutoff for your herd/breed of cattle and it may well be a cm above minimum, that is up to you. I have said over the years that the older the yearling is when semen tested the better.

15 plus months test better than 14 months, 14 months test better than 13, and so on. The minimum I do is one year but the younger you do them the more trouble you are going to have with redo’s and that is a guarantee. Measure your own bulls early and cull out the really small, only one testicle down, or any other conformation, growth or behavior problem. The sooner we get that done, the sooner we have the potential to castrate them with an acceptable method, potentially implant them and have them enter the food chain.

Condition should be right around 3-3.5 out of 5. Fatter is definitely not better and I have struggled at times with show bulls that are dead quiet, but they seem to mature later or simply don’t get active enough early to start producing good quality semen. The issue in Western Canada is that bull sales are getting earlier and earlier, yet calving in many cases is getting later, so bulls are very young, some too young when we test. In these situations, it may be best to measure and palpate the bulls’ testicles and palpate the internal reproductive organs only. They are then sold subject to passing a semen test later in the spring when they are older and ready to breed. By doing this alone, the redo rate will improve greatly, but you are changing when you actually semen test.

There is no doubt young bulls get more active towards spring and if it is possible to have cycling females close by, they are stimulated and one gets fresh sperm produced. This is the sample one may get during breeding season.

This is another way to help improve the sperm morphology. Things like detached heads (dead sperm) bent tails and often-proximal droplets are improved with a bit of usage.

With the retests, one must remember that sperm is produced over about a sixty-day period so retesting at a week to two after the initial test is really not enough time, but again veterinarians may be forced into this because of an early sale.

In my eyes, it is better to have a conditional sale on a deferred bull and wait the one to two months before retesting. Also inclement weather, such as a blizzard, may yield poor sperm for a while. I am more worried about a cold snap that happened a couple weeks ago, or a sick bull, or some other stressful event compared to one happening, the day you are semen testing.

There is often a reason why bulls need a retest and one can often predict this.

Bulls that have been sick, been injured or beat up in a fight, severely lame, and those at the bottom of the pecking order are all candidates.

Veterinarians too aggressive with the ejaculator, or stepping up the stimulation too quickly can make bulls refractory to further testing. If you do need to retest, try to leave as much time between the two tests as you can, a month to two months is preferable. One needs to sell this concept to the buying public so when a deferred bull is sold at a sale one can understand the concept and the original owner will not officially sell him until he passes outright. That is the common ground we all must operate under.

A Family Dedicated to Agriculture

“We got into Charolais around 1987, when we were looking for 4-H Heifers to show. Someone suggested we show purebred heifers, so we purchased two from Wayne and Rosetta Lang and two from Byron Ledingham. We showed them and everything just sort of took off from there. Probably lots of people have the same story, they start with a 4-H heifer and end up with a cowherd. In the next couple of years, we bought 4-H heifers and bred heifers from the 49ers sales and kept expanding,” explains Wade Beck.

The commercial cowherd fluctuates in size, varying with grass conditions and the market.

“Generally, we never keep our own replacements. The last two expansions came from neighbours wanting to sell their cows, so we purchased them to get the grass. What happens with the cowherd after that depends on how they fit in our operation and the market conditions.

“The commercial herd is predominantly Red Angus Simmental based. All our commercial cows are bred white, usually to our bigger birth weight bulls. We have community pasture where we have our own field, so we can manage the cows as we like.”

“Our commercial cowherd is there to drought-proof us. If we get in a drought situation, we can liquidate those cows without compromising our purebred herd. This year, we thought we had tons of grass and were considering buying more cows, as the year progressed, it is a good thing we didn’t.”

“We put up barley silage. When I came home from university, it was one of the first things I wanted to do. There was resistance at home for the change, but as soon as we did it, Dad said we should have done this years ago. It has really helped with the acres required to feed the cows. We put more of that hay land into crop production. They seed around 5000 acres of lentils, canola or durum.

grains. If the market is good, lots of times we can find cheaper pellets than growing barley.”

They choose to do what is economically best for the operation. Sometimes they background calves, but this year with a strong market, they sold most.

“Our purebred herd is around 250 cows but that is fluctuating. We will probably keep expanding as long as the bull market

is good and we have the manpower to handle the work.”

“Probably lots of people have the same story, they start with a 4-H heifer and end up with a cowherd.”

“We calve our heifers at the end of February and the cowherd starts in March. That change was made so we weren’t trying to picture bulls and video bulls during calving before our bull sale in February, with two kids in university. As a result in 2024, we will sell predominantly two-yearold bulls, with a few of the older yearlings to keep our numbers consistent. There are also some customers that only want yearlings and we want to keep supplying them. We have a group of bulls that we weaned early and we will test the market with them before we decide what to do going forward. The oldest one in the group will just be one at sale time, so they won’t be semen tested like all the twoyear olds.”

“We are always changing or trying something new to adapt and grow. If things don’t work out, we go back, or change to evolve and improve.”

World Charolais Technical Conference 2015
Wade & Cynthia enjoyed the Maritimes CCA AGM

held on their farm. The sale started with management but has evolved to be breeder run along with partner McCoy Cattle Company. They now have the personnel and skillset in place to handle it on their own.

Wade started on the Saskatchewan Charolais Association board before he and Cynthia were married. He was on the board for around six years progressing to be president for a two-year term. “The one year I was president of the SCA, they brought the provincial presidents out to the fall national board meetings. At that time, the association was in financial trouble and there was lots of heated discussion at that meeting about how to solve it.” Two years later, I was elected as a director of the Canadian Charolais Association, and served for six years with two as president. “The heated discussions of the previous board had solved the financial concerns and made the national board more financially stable by the time I got there. During his time on the board, the decision was made to move away from North American EPDs to Canadian. “I understand the CCA has gone back to a North American EPD. I can appreciate and respect the decision that the

board made because I’ve sat at that table and know the thought and discussion that goes into those decisions.”

“I was approached to run for the board of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association and I finally decided to give it a try. It is very different from breed association positions as you are dealing with the industry as a whole, not EPDs or breed specifics. It has been a real learning curve.”

“I was elected as a director of the Canadian Charolais Association, and served for six years with two as president.”

Cynthia worked in the media (CBC Television) for many years before she became the French Liaison for the Canadian Charolais Association for a few years. She moved into the financial world working in Lang and Yellow Grass. “During that time, I became certified in suicide intervention as there were many people struggling in our rural communities. I spoke openly about mental health struggles and many people came to me asking for support, as no one else would speak openly about mental health issues without discomfort attached to it. I started by volunteering in suicide intervention and people would just call my cell phone, while I was still working at the financial institution fulltime.”

Participants at the 2018 Charolais Banner Breeders’ School portion at Beck Farms
Wade served on the CCA Board of Directors

A suicide in the agricultural community pushed Cynthia to do more. “I was so upset. I said to Wade, I can’t continue to help people work on a life plan, if there is no support they can access to continue treatment within the system. After discussion with Wade, I decided to go back to university. I didn’t know if my brain would even work that way anymore, so I did one class online while working fulltime. The next semester I did two classes while working full time. Then I started part-time work in the fall and continued increasing classes until I quit work to be a fulltime student and graduated with an Honours Psychology Degree and was accepted straight into the Masters Clinical Psychology program.”

complete after obtaining 1500 hours of supervised practice), and I work for Saskatchewan Health Authority. I love what I do and the team I work with.”

“I also do a lot of mental health advocacy in agriculture on the side. I’ve been fortunate to speak at industry events across the country, involved with initiatives organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, and participated in a film on mental health in agriculture. “I really enjoy the mental health advocacy piece because it reaches people outside my area of the province.”

“For my thesis research, I worked with the Online Therapy Unit to tailor an internet delivered cognitive therapy program to agriculture producers. I just couldn’t believe the positive response, particularly when producers are known for not engaging in internet services.”

“From that, we were able to identify what supports producers desired and created the SaskAgMatters Mental Health Network.”

The internet program Cynthia helped to developed was designed to become part of the Online Therapy Unit within the department’s WellBeing course, so there is an area dedicated to agricultural producers. It is still functioning and they intend to keep it going. Online therapy removes all the small talk about problems on the farm and gets right to discussing the symptoms of depression or anxiety and how to treat them. The research has been submitted for publication in a medical journal and is in the extensive acceptance process.

“So fast forward to now, I am a Registered Psychologist provisionally, (she has one exam to

“I am also part of the Farmer and Rancher Mental Health initiative (FARMh), which is a research group based out of Saskatchewan Polytechnic. They have been doing research for about six years on farm credibility and farm culture and the help seeking ability of producers. From that, we were able to identify what supports producers desired and created the SaskAgMatters Mental Health Network. It is a non-profit mental health network and all our providers have an agricultural background. People can contact us anonymously and we have enough funding to provide six one-hour sessions. The services are free to Saskatchewan agricultural producers and their families. Through the research and advocacy, I’ve been able to collaborate with other people who want to make a difference for agricultural mental health.” Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta have provincial agencies that have fundraised to provide services in their provinces. There is a groundswell of people who recognize that now is the time to do more than just talk about it, we

need to actually provide services to help people. They operate separately, but they are always in contact to help each other by sharing ideas to approach needs.

Jorja has been in 4-H since she was six. She started with a steer and won Weyburn Regional in her first year, competing with 154 steers in the show. This year she showed a pair and won Weyburn Regional. “I think it will be my last year, as I am in university and I don’t think Dad wants to do the work for me,” Jorja laughs.

“I think every kids’ dream is to take their own cattle to Agribition.”

“I have attended seven CCYA events. My first was in Saskatoon in 2011 when I wasn’t technically old enough to participate, but I was hanging around all the events. This year she is on the planning committee for the CCYA Conference & Show for 2024 in Swift Current. Jorja, Mason, and Cynthia are on the committee for the education component of the event. She is also on the clothing and banquet committees. She was also involved in the planning of the last CCYA conference in Weyburn.

Jorja is studying her first year of Animal Science at the University of Saskatchewan. Her current plans are to get a Masters degree and go into genetic research, but she is quick to admit that things can change drastically along the way. She was very fortunate to earn many scholarships to help with her first year. She is currently on the judging team and plays dodgeball, which can get pretty intense. “I wanted to keep my extra-curricular activities down this first year as I adjust to university class demands.” She has a heavy load this first semester with five classes and four labs.

“I started working for High Bluff on the show road in 2018, but I think every kids’ dream is to take their own cattle to Agribition. When I was going into grade eleven, I decided to take this cow out of pasture and get her ready to show. I had shown her successfully as a calf in 4-H, CCYA and Young Ranchman’s. Then covid hit and she wasn’t shown again until she had a calf at side. Beck’s Tequila 69F was exhibited in the Canadian Western

This year, Beck’s Dancer 60J, with her calf at side, qualified for the CWA Supreme by winning the National Show at Manitoba Ag-Ex.” Mason was in 4-H for many years and served on the local club executive for a number of years as treasurer and vice president. In University, he has served on the Agriculture Students’ Association every year. In first year, he was elected as the 1st Year Degree Rep during covid and they hosted a drive-in movie fundraiser for STARS that raised around $16,000. As 2nd Year Degree Rep, he had a fairly large role in the Bed Push for Telemiracle raising over $88,000. (Telemiracle is a Kinsmen run fundraiser supporting special health service needs in the province of Saskatchewan.) Wade, who is also a U of S Ag Grad, participated in the bed push again for a father-son leg of the event. “In 3rd Year, I started a new Agros party called

I also serve on various committees for events within the college like Ag Bag Drag.” Wade and Cynthia have supported 4-H for many years. They are both 2nd Generation 4-Hers and their kids are 3rd. Wade was a beef leader before they were married and they became beef leaders together until their kids were old enough to participate. Then they stepped back to take a supportive role as parents. Wade and Cynthia met at Regina Bull Sale. Cynthia was raised in the Hereford business and their kids are 2nd generation Hereford Bonanza participants. Wade just missed the CCYA events as they were so new in the business when the events started in Alberta. His sister Jill attended one in Saskatoon. Wade coached hockey for many years while Mason was playing. He also served as President of the Minor Hockey Board. He says he could write a book. “I always say in

hockey and in cattle, if the parents would get out of the way and quit trying to live through their kids, things would go a lot better. I think one of the best things I did was to have a booth at Agribition without cattle. It forced the kids to go work for someone else. They had really great experiences and learned so much.”

Cynthia served on the local church board and worked off the farm.

Together they served on the CCA AGM host committee in 2010, when the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Charolais Association was celebrated in Moose Jaw. Beck Farms also hosted a barbecue and a cattle tour as part of the itinerary.

“Agriculture is a community of its own and the cattle business even more so.
Once it is in your blood, it just doesn’t leave.”

Beck Farms hosted the 2015 World Technical Conference for a visit on their farm where Wade’s parents, Donna and Gary, served homemade saskatoon pie and ice cream for everyone.

One of the Charolais Banner Breeder Schools included a day at their farm to evaluate live cattle. They are always willing to lend a hand and help. The family’s dedication to the community and agriculture is exemplary. Cynthia wraps it all up by saying, “Agriculture is a community of its own and the cattle business even more so. Once it is in your blood, it just doesn’t leave.”
