This fall I attended all four of the major shows in Brandon, Toronto, Edmonton and Regina. It was so good to see the cattle and crowd numbers back to pre-Covid levels. Smiling faces and lots of excitement were part at each of these events, as everyone seemed happy to be back to some sense of normalcy.

Sales so far this fall have been very strong, with many new faces and breeders participating. The new breeder list in this issue is quite impressive number wise.

Watch for updates on some exciting programs being put on by the Friends of Canadian Charolais Foundation. At our recent zoom meeting, we developed a Mentorship program, a Breeders’ School, an AI School and a CCYA Incentive program which will be highlighted on a website and through social media platforms. These programs will be beneficial for all breeders, and we are already planning for the next Foundation Sale to be held in conjunction with the CCA AGM and Alberta Weekend

June 9-11. Mark your calendars now, as you will not want to miss this fun and educational few days.

Progressive Ataxia (PA) has been a point of discussion this fall as well. This is a genetic condition that has been around for decades with very minimal problems. The worst thing we can do is panic, fear it and promote it in the industry. At the commercial level with Charolais bulls going on other breed females, it is a total nonissue. On commercial Charolais cows there is a very slim chance of any problems. I have never seen an affected animal and I doubt there are many of you who have as well. Please do not put any testing results in your bull sale catalogues and have our commercial customers question using Charolais unless they are all tested. It is another unnecessary test and expense at that level. If you want to check your herd bulls, donor females and work around it, that can be done with ease. Craig Scott has more information on this in his report in this issue.

share and replace the customers who have quit. Some of this is drought, some is age, some is just being burntout after the tough spring calving and keeping the calves healthy. It is unfortunate because with the North American cow numbers down, the cattle market looks poised to be very good for several years.

Also in this issue, you will see the Charolais Calendar. The Charolais Banner has been producing this as a fundraiser for groups in the industry for many years. It started with the Charolettes many years ago. When that group disbanded, we offered the opportunity to the Canadian Charolais Youth Association. It is just one of the ways we choose to support the industry. This is a great fundraiser for the CCYA and we thank everyone who participated in it and all the junior members who helped sell it.

Robbie Chomik and I are now preparing our spring picture and video schedules so if you would like some help with those and to promote the program in the Spring Connections, give us a call. Until next time, Helge

Cet automne, j’ai assisté à quatre expositions majeures soit Brandon, Toronto, Edmonton et Regina. C’était tellement bon de revoir le nombre d’animaux et de foules revenir aux niveaux pré-covid. Des visages souriants et beaucoup d’excitation faisaient partie de chacun de ces événements, car tout le monde semblait heureux de retrouver un certain sens de la normalité.

Les ventes jusqu’à présent cet automne ont été très fortes, avec la participation de nombreux nouveaux visages et éleveurs. La liste de nouveaux éleveurs dans ce numéro est assez impressionnante en matière de participation. Surveillez les mises à jour sur certains programmes passionnants mis en place par la Fondation des Amis du Charolais canadien. Lors de notre récente réunion zoom, nous avons développé un programme de mentorat, une école d’éleveurs, une école d’IA et un programme d’incitation CCYA qui seront mis en évidence sur un site Web et via des plateformes de médias sociaux. Ces programmes seront bénéfiques pour tous les éleveurs, et nous planifions déjà la prochaine vente de la Fondation qui se tiendra conjointement avec l’AGA de l’ACC et la fin de semaine de l’Alberta du 9 au 11 juin. L’ataxie progressive (AP) a également fait l’objet de discussions cet automne.

Il s’agit d’une maladie génétique qui existe depuis des décennies avec des problèmes minimes. La pire chose que nous puissions faire est de paniquer, de craindre la maladie et de la promouvoir dans l’industrie. Au niveau commercial, avec des taureaux Charolais le croisement avec des femelles d’une autre race, ce n’est même pas une inquiétude. Sur les vaches Charolaises commerciales, il y a très peu de chances de rencontrer des problèmes. Je n’ai jamais vu d’animal atteint et je doute que vous soyez nombreux à en avoir vu aussi. Merci de ne pas mettre des résultats de ces tests dans vos catalogues de vente de taureaux et de poser des questions à nos clients commerciaux sur l’utilisation du Charolais à moins qu’ils ne soient tous testés. C’est un autre test et une dépense inutiles à ce niveau. Si vous souhaitez vérifier les taureaux de votre troupeau, les femelles donneuses et contourner le problème, cela peut être fait facilement. Craig Scott a plus d’informations à ce sujet dans son rapport dans ce numéro.

Cet automne, de nombreuses vaches commerciales ont été mises sur le marché, nous devons donc tous être agressifs dans nos stratégies de marketing pour gagner plus de parts

de marché et remplacer les clients qui ont abandonné. Une partie est due à la sécheresse, une autre à l’âge, une autre à l’épuisement après les vêlages difficiles du printemps et à garder les veaux en bonne santé. C’est malheureux, car avec la baisse du nombre de vaches en Amérique du Nord, le marché du bétail s’annonce très bon pour plusieurs années.

Knowledge is King

The hot topic in the last few months has been Progressive Ataxia (PA).

PA is a genetic condition that is not new, it was first identified in the 1940s. I want to start by telling you what it is. PA is a genetic condition that can cause loss of function in the rear legs of Charolais cattle. This condition is mostly found in younger cattle 18 to 24 months old and will start out with the animal being wobbly in the hind end and progress over time to where the animal can’t stand on their own. That animal would be considered a PA affected. The first question I have been asked by breeder’s is should we be culling all the PA carrier cattle?

The answer to that question is NO, PA is a very manageable condition, once you know the status of the animals you are breeding.

If you know that your animal is a carrier, those genetics can still be used in your breeding operation.

If you breed a PA carrier to a PA free animal 50% of the offspring will be PA free and 50% will be PA carriers. If you breed PA carrier to a PA carrier, then 50% of the offspring will be PA carriers and 25% will be PA affected and 25% will be PA free. This genetic condition is only found in Charolais cattle, so unless your commercial producers have a Charolais influenced herd, PA will never affect them and will never have this condition in their herd. A PA free bull on Charolais commercial cows will result in zero affected offspring.

The test for PA is available through the CCA, the test is now part of the 100K SNP test at an additional cost of $12. If an animal has a 100K already

done, you can contact Lois in the CCA office and order just the PA test for a cost of $12. The results of a PA test will go directly to the owner and will not be made public by the CCA.

Please feel free to reach out to any CCA board member, or staff member, with any questions you might have, and please remember that this is a very manageable condition.

I have been attending many events across the country this fall. I attended Expo Boeuf in Quebec, and then continued east to a sale in Nova Scotia. President Kasey Phillips and I were invited to attend the American International Charolais Association fall meetings and national show in Kansas City, these meetings were very informative and productive. I also attended Olds Fall Classic, Brandon Ag-Ex, our national show at the 100th annual Toronto Royal, FarmFair International and finished the show season with Canadian Western Agribition. These events were well attended by both exhibitors and breeders.

The CCA held our fall board meetings in Calgary, November 18th to 20th. Sandy Russell, the CEO of Canadian Beef Breeds Council, started the meeting with a great update on the progress of CBIN. The weekend of meetings was filled with committee reports and brainstorming for the future of the CCA. A joint session was held on the last day with all the provincial association presidents, this was a very informative get together for both the CCA Board and the Presidents.

Welcome to the Charolais Business

For 50 plus years, Happy Haven Charolais have operated and raised purebred Charolais seed stock for purebred and commercial cattlemen.

Over the years we have observed many trends and fads in genetic type, frame, and quality of livestock created by feedlot and showing industry makers. We have tried to stay current to compete in both as market demands equal survival. The time to scale back an operation is never an easy decision to make.

As our family has grown, and moved on with their lives, the workload with a large cattle herd has placed more demand on myself and Crystal, at a time in our lives that we want to spend more of our time with the kids and grandkids. We also were hoping to find a young cattleman interested in an established genetic base herd to carry on what we have built.

At this time, I want to introduce Nick and Callie Reiter, Howling River Ranch, Norquay Saskatchewan, and to give a big thank you for the purchase of 70 bred females and 3 herd bulls, to fill out their 250 plus family run commercial herd. They will be carrying on as a co-operative herd supplier of Charolais bulls for Hill 70 Quantock, Lloydminster, Alberta. Please welcome them into the industry. Also a big thank you to Hill 70 Quantock, Bill and Sherry Creech and family for believing in our program here and allowing us to be a co-operative herd over the years and to accept Howling River Ranch to carry on in our place.

Le sujet d’actualité ces derniers mois a été l’ataxie progressive (AP). L’AP n’est pas nouvelle condition génétique, elle a été identifiée pour la première fois dans les années 1940. Je vais commencer par vous expliquer de quoi il s’agit. L’AP est une condition génétique qui peut causer une perte de fonction au niveau des pattes arrière des bovins Charolais. Cette condition se retrouve surtout chez les jeunes bovins âgés de 18 à 24 mois et elle commence avec l’animal qui vacille au niveau de son train arrière. La situation progresse au fil du temps jusqu’au point où l’animal ne peut plus se tenir sur lui-même. Un tel animal serait considéré comme étant touché par l’AP. La première question que m’ont posée les éleveurs est la suivante : devrions-nous réformer tous les bovins porteurs de l’AP? La réponse à cette question est NON, l’AP est une condition très gérable une fois que vous connaissez le statut des animaux que vous élevez.

Si vous savez que votre animal est porteur, ses gènes peuvent encore être utilisés dans votre élevage. Si vous accouplez un animal porteur de l’AP à un animal exempt de l’AP, 50% de la progéniture sera exempt de l’AP et 50% seront porteurs de l’AP. Si vous accouplez un porteur de l’AP à un porteur de l’AP, 50% des descendants seront porteurs de l’AP, 25% seront atteints de l’AP et 25 % seront exempts de l’AP. Cette condition génétique ne se retrouve que chez les bovins Charolais, donc à moins que vos clients producteurs commerciaux aient un troupeau fortement influencé par la race Charolais, l’AP ne sera pratiquement jamais présente et elle n’aura aucun effet dans leurs troupeaux. Un taureau exempt d’AP

employé sur des vaches commerciales Charolais ne générera aucun descendant atteint.

Le test de l’AP est disponible par l’ACC, le test fait maintenant partie du test de 100K SNP à un coût supplémentaire de 12 $. Si un animal a déjà été testé avec une analyse 100K, vous pouvez communiquer avec Lois au bureau de l’ACC et commander le test d’AP pour un coût de seulement 12 $. Les résultats d’un test d’’AP iront directement au propriétaire et ne seront pas rendus publics par l’ACC.

N’hésitez pas à communiquer avec tout membre du conseil d’administration ou membre du personnel de l’ACC si vous avez des questions, et n’oubliez pas qu’il s’agit d’une condition très bien gérable.

J’ai assisté à de nombreux événements partout au pays cet automne. J’ai assisté à l’Expo Boeuf au Québec, puis j’ai continué vers l’est pour assister à une vente en NouvelleÉcosse. Le président Kasey Phillips et moi-même avons été invités à assister aux réunions d’automne et au jugement national de l’Association American International Charolais à Kansas City. Ces réunions ont été très instructives et productives. J’ai également assisté à la Fall Classic à Olds, à l’exposition AGEX à Brandon, à notre jugement national au 100e anniversaire de la Royale de Toronto, à l’exposition FarmFair International et j’ai terminé la saison des compétitions de bovins de race pure à l’exposition Canadian Western Agribition. Tous ces événements ont été très bien fréquentés par les exposants et les éleveurs.

L’ACC a tenu ses réunions d’automne à Calgary du 18 au 20 novembre 2022. Sandy Russell, PDG du “Canadian Beef Breeds Council” a débuté la rencontre par une excellente mise à jour sur les progrès du projet « CBIN ». Plusieurs

rapports de comité ont été présentés lors de la fin de semaine de réunions et nous avons effectué une session de remue-méninges pour discuter de l’avenir de l’ACC. Une séance conjointe a eu lieu le dernier jour avec

tous les présidents des associations provinciales, ce fut une rencontre très instructive pour le Conseil de l’ACC et les présidents.

Mark Frost, Kinsey Falls, was re-elected president of the Quebec Charolais Association at their Annual General Meeting held August 13, at Ferme Coujo Charolais, Notre-DameDu-Bon-Conseil.

OBITUARY

Rod passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Tudor Manor, Okotoks. We were so happy to have celebrated his 90th birthday this July with many family and friends. Rod is survived by one sister Marjorie, brother in law Herb, his three children Bob (Heather), Lorna (Cathy), Ann (Ron), stepdaughter Heather (Keith), stepson Rob (Barb), 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson, plus a very large extended family. He was predeceased by grandson Randy.

Rodney had cattle, especially purebred cattle, in his blood from an early age. Improving Canada’s beef herds was paramount through his

life. He was one of the first to bring Charolais from the States in 1958, (at the age of 26), was instrumental in bringing Charolais, Simmental and other breeds from Europe, started several beef breed magazines including the Charolais Banner in 1966 and was part of it until 1983. He set up a beef operation in Nova Scotia, and started Purebred Sales Management companies to market these new breeds. Charcan and later Transcon Livestock Corp. sales management companies and selling Simmental and Charolais, were the passion for most of his life. He was supported by his first wife Pearl through these endeavours.

Then in 1985, in a major departure from the beef industry, Rod and second wife Mernie purchased the Ginger Tea Room on main street Okotoks. When there wasn’t a square

inch in that building not filled with merchandise, and tea room area was too small, they decided they had to expand and built the new Ginger Room on Riverside Drive, moving in May of 1990. They ran that business until 2001.

The Ginger Room and land base became important in different ways. The back acre was sold and it and an adjoining parcel became the Heartland Retirement Complex where he resided after selling his house. The Ginger Room building was purchased by the Okotoks United Church and they built a beautiful sanctuary on the back where his service will be held.

The service will be held at the Okotoks United Church, 1:00 pm, Thursday, January 5. If you choose, donations may be made at Parkinson.ca.

OBITUARY

Wilf Sieger

Wilfred Leo Sieger passed away on October 10, 2022, at the age of 99 years. Wilf was born on March 19, 1923, in Coronation, Alberta, to Leo and Josephine (nee Wood) Sieger. In 1952, Wilf married a beautiful local lady, Doris Bargholz, and to this union came four beautiful children. Wilf and Doris remained in Coronation

working the fields and raising their children while contributing to community and keeping much honour, humour, and joyful stories a part of each day.

Wilf started using Charolais bulls in the late 1950s and was president of the ACA in 1969 and 1970, a CCA director from 1973 to 1982 and president in 1978 and 1979.He was a promoter of the Conception to Consumer program and also bought and fed the C-C steers and heifers

for a number of years. Some notable bulls he raised that had an impact in the Charolais industry were Wildor Maverick and Wildor Raven.

Wilf will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family; Wes Sieger, Marina (Bill) Schmidt, Colleen Taylor, and Dan (JoAnn) Sieger; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-greatgrandchildren; siblings; friends, and staff at Coronation DSL and hospital.

OBITUARY

Christopher John Stebeleski passed away October 11, 2022, at the age of 57. Chris was born in 1965 and was raised by his parents Don and Lil Stebeleski, of Happy Haven Charolais, on a farm southwest of Oakburn, Manitoba, along with his siblings Glenda and Kevin. Chris attended school in Oakburn and Rossburn, then went on to attend Assiniboine Community College taking an automotive technician course.

Chris had a true love of cattle and horses. He was involved in 4-H Beef Club and became skilled in grooming and showing animals. Because he enjoyed working with cattle, he found employment as a herd manager and worked on several large farms in

Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. His last job was at Cattlex in Hamiota, before his health issues prevented him from working.

Chris had kidney related health problems since birth and endured many medical procedures including a kidney transplant. Through them all, he continually kept a sense of humour and didn’t complain.

Chris married Arlene Twerdochlib in March 1991 and later proudly adopted Amber as his daughter. In July 1996, his son Cody was born and this brought the greatest joy to him. After the kids were grown, Chris and Arlene went their own ways and Chris grew in his faith with the Lord. In 2009, Chris married Cecile Foulds and they lived in Oakburn for 10 years until Cece’s passing in November 2019.

Chris was diagnosed with cancer in September this year and was taken to be with the Lord on October 11th.

He was pre-deceased by his father Don Stebeleski, wife Cece and infant nephew Curtis. Chris made friends easily and took pleasure in always lending a helping hand to others when he could. Janet Jackson (Armbruster) was born on July 8, 1944, in Melfort, Sask. She passed away November 27th, 2022. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bob Jackson, her daughter Chris (Dean) Janzen and grandchildren, Noah (Jodie) and Erik; her son Wes Jackson and grandchildren Graci Deforest and Tyrin Sevigny.

Mom spent her early years on a farm south of Star City with her family. She came from a large family of 12 children full of love, laughter, storytelling, and music. The family moved into Star City when mom started school and there made many lifelong friendships. She graduated in 1962 and attended the School of Nursing at the Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert. She graduated in 1965 and returned home to Star City where she worked as an RN at Melfort Union Hospital. She met Bob in July 1966, and they were married April 1st, 1967.

Mom and Dad lived in Tisdale for 2 years before moving out to the Jackson farm 6 miles east of Sylvania. Janet continued to nurse at Tisdale Union Hospital while Bob worked up north in the winters and farmed with his father Robert. They welcomed their first child Christina Michelle in November 1972, and sadly said farewell to two infant daughters Marsha Ann in 1974 and Carla Lena in 1975. In 1979, their son Wesley Lloyd joined their family and they raised their 2 children together at the family farm.

Bob and Janet operated Bo-Jan Enterprises and have been Charolais breeders for over 45 years. Janet will be best remembered by Charolais breeders as the smiling face in the Charolais General store at Agribition for over 10 years from the 1994 to 2004 while Bob was the Charolais barn boss. If you ever stopped at

their farm, you were welcomed with an immaculate yard and treated to excellent hospitality by Janet no matter when you stopped. For many years they had a Charolais party between Christmas and New Year’s and welcomed breeders from the Northeast part of Saskatchewan and beyond and no one was allowed to bring anything. Janet always provided a big spread for all who attended. They were presented with a Saskatchewan Charolais Association Honour Scroll in 2002, a Canadian Charolais Association Honor Roll in 2009 and a Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honour Roll in 2017.

Mom enjoyed curling throughout her life, both participating and watching. She attended numerous bonspiels and events across Canada and also Las Vegas. Mom had a talent for sewing and knitting. Many family and friends have received her beautiful scarves, toques, mitts and sweaters over the years. Her cooking and baking are legendary and anyone who was fortunate enough to spend any time with her and dad enjoyed cinnamon buns, tarts, muffins, cakes and cookies. Mom had a beautiful voice, like many of her sisters, and she loved to sing and play instruments, such as piano, guitar, organ, accordion and harmonica.

In her recent years she was a member of the Bjorkdale Choir and spent many enjoyable Monday afternoons sharing her talent. Mom loved her yard and took meticulous care of the lawn, flowers and garden. Every fall, the cold room and freezer were well stocked with canning and garden produce. There was rarely a weed or bug to be seen, and her quiet time was sitting on her John Deere mower mowing grass. Mom loved all animals, even the cows, although she preferred them wrapped in brown paper in her freezer.

the happiest at home on the farm. Their last trip together was to Nova Scotia this summer where many more memories were made. From her garden parties, to hosting friends and family, to helping a neighbour, mom was always there. She loved visiting and having company over and anyone who came to the yard always left well fed. Her caring and compassion was evident not just with her family and friends, but whomever she met.

She left us too soon and we are heartbroken to have to say goodbye, but we take comfort in the many wonderful memories she made with us all. She will be with us in our hearts.

Chance Wesley Jackson was born May 23, 2013, in Saskatoon, Sask. He passed away in Saskatoon, at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital surrounded by family on November 28th, 2022. He was predeceased by his mother Amber Jackson (Cairns). He is survived by his father Wes Jackson, his siblings Graci Deforest and Tyrin Sevigny, his paternal grandfather, Bob Jackson, his maternal grandmother Lorie Cairns, his aunt Chris (Dean) Janzen and cousins Noah (Jodie) and Erik.

A blustery day did keep some buyers at home, but the high-quality offering and a large number of presale visitors, telephones and internet didn’t hamper them from having a great sale. Their first production sale in five decades of breeding Charolais saw cattle sell to six provinces. With proven producers, to show prospect heifer calves with fresh pedigrees, the sale provided something for everyone.

Four Generations of Breeding Charolais

The Cooks have been farming in the Steep Rock, Manitoba, area since 1911. William and Rose Cook had been farming in the Carmen area but was having some health issues when his doctor told him to move north to a more humid climate. He travelled to Steep Rock walking the last fifteen miles to select his homestead. Darren says his Great-Grandfather did a good job, as he selected one of the best quarters in the area. The fifth generation of Cooks is farming in the area with hopes of the sixth generation joining when they are old enough.

Darren’s grandfather, Herm Cook, was the first one to

become interested in Charolais. He found an Apollon son owned by Manfred Drader, Estevan, Saskatchewan, and liked him so well, he offered him $7,500. It was a sizable investment for the time, but Dale Norheim saw the bull and convinced Manfred to put him in a bull sale the next spring. The bull actually died over the winter before the sale and never bred any females. Herm purchased a bull from Harold Boyne, Clavet, Saskatchewan, to breed his predominantly Polled Hereford herd. He sold the calves at $.42/lb in 1972, which was the top price of the day.

He was so enthused with the success he decided to buy a package of Charolais females in South Dakota. They were mostly all purebreds.

“My Dad, Don, made the trip to bring them home. On his way, he stopped for some gas and a guy came out and asked what he was hauling. He told him he bought some Charolais heifers. The guy took a look and asked him why he bought garbage like that. He had Hereford yearlings bigger than that. Well his son ended up buying a French Charolais bull to breed his cows. His dad absolutely tore a strip off him for being so stupid. The dad sold his yearling Herefords at 840 lb for $.76/lb. About two weeks later, the son sold his calves from the Charolais bull for substantially more money at 810 lb for $1.17 lb. It was the last time his dad said anything about the Charolais bull,” Darren laughs. “He actually sold all his Hereford bulls and

replaced them with Charolais.”

Don and Marilyn Cook had three sons and they farmed together. Chris is the oldest. Stephen was next, but passed away about six years ago, and Darren is the youngest.

Chris and Stephen were old enough to be in 4-H and they each took a nice Charolais heifer to show that first year. They won their club with them, but when they went to the inter-club, things were different. The judge wouldn’t even look at them. He told them to take their heifers to the corner and stand there. He placed the rest of the class and told them there was no place for their cattle in the industry. That is how Charolais started in the area.

Stephen is the one that was most interested in the Charolais part of the operation. He was always trading cattle and selling bulls.

When Darren finished high school, they were finishing

Everyone works at brandings all their calves and selling them to the packing houses in Winnipeg. At the time, Burns, Swift and Canada Packers were among the packers operating in Winnipeg. The Manitoba government had a Beef Marketing Program to encourage breeders to finish cattle in Manitoba. The calves would be listed on a site and the packers bid on them. They delivered directly to the packers in Winnipeg. They did this for about ten years until all the packers closed in Winnipeg.

They have a piece of land across Lake Manitoba on Peaonon Point, where they keep around 200 commercial cows and Chris looks after them. They all ranch together and they have around 1050 commercial cows, but Chris

really isn’t involved in the purebred side of the operation. One of Chris’s sons manages the ranch across the lake now and his other son is the mechanic of the operation.

Darren and Brandi’s son, John, and Stephen’s son, Shilo, are most interested in the purebred Charolais operation of 250 females.

Their daughter, Anna, looks after the feeding. She handles the rations for the mixer wagon and gets the job done. The guys are hunters and also guide Americans during deer hunting season. Anna is the dependable mainstay in the feeding department.

William is also farming fulltime with the family, while Grace, Carissa and Obed are finishing school.

In 2011, water was diverted from the Assiniboine River to Lake Manitoba to save the city of Winnipeg from flooding. It brought the lake up really fast and by the time they were told to remove their cattle from Peaonon Point, the water was already going over the road. They hauled cattle out on trailers for a while, but it just got too dangerous. They did take about 3/4 of a neighbour’s herd out, but the Cook cattle all stayed. Someone that grazed cattle on an island had a barge and assisted in getting some cattle to safety. They unloaded them on the shore by Steep Rock and they were trucked to wherever there was pasture for them. The Cooks used the barge to carry bulls across the water to their cows that summer for the breeding season. There was no place to land the barge on the shoreline, so they opened the gate and pushed the bulls into the water. In some places, it was shallow enough for them to walk to shore, but in other places they had to swim. The Cooks later crossed by boat and used the quad on the other side to check them. They were very pleased to see the bulls had

found the cows and were settled in and going to work.

The government officials told one neighbour his cattle had to be moved. The neighbour, whose cattle were pretty rangy, said it wasn’t going to happen. The official suggested that they would make him move them. He said, you don’t understand. What you are asking me to do would be like pouring gasoline down a funnel backwards while it is lit on fire. It’s just not going to happen.

The Cooks ended up culling that part of the herd down to 150 that year. All the feed for those cows had to be hauled to them and it had to be made into a manageble situation. There was no feed harvested in the flood year on the Point.

The Cooks seed around a 1000 acres for feed, nothing is combined. They chop around 300 acres of corn. Land is rotated from corn to alfalfa and back. The commercial cows graze corn. Their bulls are developed on a corn silage ration that includes some purchaced canola meal.

the commercial cows start on April 20. The commercial cows calve on the range spread over three quarters of land that has bush for shelter from the wind. They try to keep them in groups no larger than 500. They finish calving in time to take them to grass. They are never fed in pens. They graze corn until January most years, then they are fed on the land until they are moved to the calving land closer to home.

The Cooks used to calve everything in February, but as the herd grew, they didn’t have the facilities to handle the numbers in the colder months. The purebreds get treated differently and are brought into pens for calving. They have a 40 x 80 barn where they can go on cold nights. Every purebred calf is weighed.

The purebreds have a sixty day calving period, but the commercials can be longer. The large pastures they use make it difficult to find the bulls with all the bush. If they can find them, they are pulled at the end of sixty days. When there are 15-20 quarters in a pasture and around 400 cows, they do have to keep a few more bulls in the pasture.

In the purebred pastures, if they have a mature bull, they can go as high as 45 cows/bull. In recent years they

have started to A.I. more to take the pressure off the walking bull battery. The purebred pastures are broke into areas for 20 to 45 cows.

Their commercial cowherd consists of Red Angus x Simmentals cows and a lot of Charcross cows. “To tell you the truth, the Charcross cow is my favorite,” says Darren. “We source replacements and keep a lot of our own. Our commercial herd is about 2/3 Charcross. We will keep our own for two or three years, then we bring some in with colour, just so we don’t get too white. Although, we have never been discounted for white calves. There was only once where they sorted some white calves off and that was because they had an order for white heifers. They asked us if it was okay and we agreed to it. They actually brought a cent and half premium.”

“We do keep some white females, but even if we breed the tan females white, a very high percentage won’t have a white calf,” explains Darren. “We like the half Charolais females.”

“We kept a few white heifers this year and we took some of our purebred heifers and moved them into the commercial herd,” adds John.

“Any bulls that have birth weights too large to go in our bull sale are used in our commercial herd. I don’t bat an eye at putting a 120 lb birth weight on our commercial cows. We don’t check our commercial cowherd at night during calving. We check them before we go to bed and first thing in the morning, but we are comfortable not checking them at night. We haven’t had calving problems unless there is a malpresentation.”

They market their steer calves the first week in December. They normally retain their heifers and background the heifers until mid February. In 2022, with the market the way it was, they hung on to them and grassed them to sell as yearlings, which turned out to be a good decision.

Keeping in touch with their customers is important and they often hear news about how their calves sell. One of their bull customers called this fall to tell him his 771 lb steers brought over $2.50 to bring $1920 each at the Ashern Market.

“In early 2000s, for approximately ten years, we put on a special feeder sale for Triple C bull customers. Stephen did a tour in Ontario with Pfizer and met a lot of people in feedlots. When he came back, he said we needed to have this sale. It was a large sale, but it was over in two hours. The calves were sorted by size and sold by the truckload. When it started, everybody was calving earlier in March, all the calves were pre-weaned and double vaccinated. We had around 3000 head in the sale. Once the buyers in Ontario saw how the cattle worked, there were three of them that bid for the calves. The heifers brought steer prices many times.”

a consistant product. We discontinued having the sale, but participants still benefit from it. The buyers are still interested in Triple C sired calves from those days and the relationships we built.”

“Our calves are guaranteed to go east. The buyers are calling the Ashern Auction mart asking when we are bringing our calves. We still double vaccinate, but with our later calving season, we are not pre-weaning. Our weaning weights for our early April-May calves are 550 to 700 lb.”

They have been raising the kind of cattle they like and the bulls they want for the commercial industry, but the success of SCX Jehu 233E has brought a higher profile to

There is room for them to expand the purebred herd as their bull market is strong. They sell around seventy bulls each year and they had their seventh sale this year. They were selling their bulls off the yard, but they had about ten customers that wanted first pick as soon as they weaned their calves. “It just got to be hard to deal with all the guys that wanted first pick. We’d call as soon as we weaned and we would be sold out of bulls before Christmas every year. There was always somebody upset that they didn’t get first pick, so we decided to go to a sale so everyone had

feelings,” Darren explains.

“When we started the sale in 2015, we switched to a twoyear old offering. We did it for two reasons, firstly because we had a strong market for bulls with some age. Secondly, because it gives us a year to use some of our best genetics in our own herd.”

“We talked to a professor at the University of Saskatchewan that was the trichomoniasis specialist and he said we didn’t have to test. He said in two-year old bulls it isn’t an issue. Yearling bulls shed the lining of their sheath between one and two years of age and he assured us it was a non-issue. There is the odd time I have to test for someone because their bull is going to a PFRA pasture and it is required, but it is never a problem. The heifers they bring into the herd are bought as calves and bred by their own bulls, so none of their females are exposed to anyone else’s bulls.”

“Our top priority for bull selection for our purebred herd is carcass quality. We have been using ultrasound data for years and have purchased bulls with ultrasound data since

the mid-nineties. With our relationship with the buyers in the east, we need to keep that focus in our cattle. They know our cattle and we receive the data on our calves when they market the fats. Realistically, I want growth, lots of capacity, I like spine length, because that goes with growth. We have been working on keeping birth weights moderate with performance. We like polled bulls but we aren’t afraid to buy a horned bull. We do have customers who will buy eight to ten horned bulls each year.”

“The farming community is strong and the hard times we go through builds character. I don’t think the women are appreciated as much as they should be for all they do. It doesn’t matter what role they fill, they are vital to the success of the operation. Farming also teaches the kids a strong work ethic. If they choose not to farm, they are sought after employees because of it,” adds Darren.

With the enthusiasm from the fifth generation and the demand for their bulls, the Cooks will be in the industry for many more years.

Semen testing of the yearling bulls is almost over and herd sires is just around the corner. When purchasing a bull whether purebred or commercial, producers always ask for a semen evaluation. Look at it thoroughly and make sure the pass box is ticked off. Then look for the specifics and whether the scrotal size if within normal parameters and is what you want. Back in 2013, the scrotal circumference minimums for age were changed just slightly, some not at all. The minimums are there for a very good reason, as almost every time you semen test a bull that is even one cm below the minimum, he likely would not pass based on semen quality. The Limousin breed has a minimum of 29 cm for yearlings up to 31.5 cm at 15 months. Even though this is less than many other breeds, the minimums are very true. I have found that Limousin do NOT need as big a testicles as some of the other breeds to produce high quality semen.

All purebred producers should have a scrotal tape and use it at culling or selection time on the young bulls. It gets you familiar with how to use it. I highly recommend the “reliabull” scrotal tape which has

been the main one used in Canada because of the spring mechanism that keeps everybody consistent. You are then not surprised if one is a little short on scrotal size when your herd veterinarian semen tests them because you have also measured them. Producers and veterinarians can overall be very consistent this way. Measuring the widest part of the scrotum and pulling compressing scrotal skin until you see the red part of the plunger. This means stop and read it right then. The bulls can be measured at a younger age than a year but keep in mind your cut off for scrotal size will be a lot lower. I have seen an adjusted amount of .04 cm per day as an average predicted growth rate. You are trying to eliminate the real small ones and you may find badly misshapen or not fully descended testicles these are obvious culls. They are then removed early at a younger age before effort has been put into promoting, picturing, clipping videoing etc. Then even the castration will be easier on them and less risky. Go by the beef code and use the appropriate pain killers. Plus, you don’t have your veterinarian trying to semen test an inferior bull. This is why veterinarians’ initial pass rate on yearling bulls will be considerably higher on the preselected candidates.

You want to semen test only bull calves older than a year of age and preferably the closer to fifteen months the better, because under a year they are just not ready. If you are in an early sale, I would measure and palpate their reproductive organs, but would say they are too young to test and defer until a later date.

It is phenomenal to me how quickly breeders have increased scrotal size by selection. Scrotal size is moderately heritable so that has been accomplished generally in short order. I have always said on mature bulls anything above 39 is just bragging rights. In studies, they have found bigger bulls do not on average produce any more semen. I also worry that if we breed big testicled genetics to big testicled genetics, they can probably get too big. Bigger is not always better in the testicle world. Other veterinarians will vouch for me when we see yearlings being an abnormal amount above breed average, it may be cause for concern. The semen test will be the final reckoning but I have definitely seen abnormally big bulls fail.

I have heard many breeds say the testicles are not big but they are longer. There are differences in shape between bulls, but the scrotal circumference is easy to do reliably and puts everyone on the same page. Again if looking at US bulls or selling into that market, remember the US veterinarians just pull the tape snug and so their scrotal circumferences are going to be inflated 2 cm to Canadian readings. That is a fact and worth noting to yourself and telling others. In the early days, many a breeder of lots of the breeds brought in a highly touted American bull to increase scrotal size only to find he was the same size as ones they had in their own bull pen.

When semen testing on yearling bulls, besides checking semen quality and scrotal size, we are looking for other odd ball things such as warts, frenulum’s, hair rings, cuts, preputial infections and seminal vesiculitis being the main ones. Fortunately, if found, many of these things can be corrected right at the time of the semen test. If you happen to see a yearling bull with a big wart on his penis, have that attended to ahead of time. The semen test will then be the recheck as all the conditions mentioned above will almost always be rechecked by the veterinarian to make sure healing has fully occurred and no other issues have developed.

If you can’t get semen on an apparently normal bull, try using a bigger probe with more contact or the veterinarian massaging. In extreme cases, I have had a refractory bull to the ejaculator breed a cull cow and pull the semen and vaginal mucous out and evaluate that. In this case, you can even watch his ability to breed at the same time. As breeders, it is always best to ask a commercial breeder to try to watch at least one mating to make sure young bulls have the desire and physical ability to breed. This is what we can’t check and sometimes they need more time and patience and other times they never do and need to be culled.

I hope bull sales go well this spring and that the bulls have all matured the way you like them. With high end bulls, some breeders also draw them for on farm usage. This is a type of insurance, because if the bull has issues you at least have semen on him. There are a handful of veterinarians, including the AI studs, where owner’s use collection can be performed. Seek them out if you need them.

Patenaude Inducted to MB Basketball Hall of Fame

Carolyn Patenaude, Sunshine Oak Charolais, of Holland, Manitoba, was inducted to the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame. Carolyn was a member of the Treherne Collegiate Tigers Varsity Girls Basketball Team in 1995 when they won the MHSAA ‘A’ Provincial Championship. DeGurses Win Sustainability Award

Mark and Charlene DeGurse received the award for The Royal’s Celebrating Sustainability program. Charlene wrote a 250 word essay about the sustainability of their Annuroc Charolais, Mooretown, operation and they were selected to receive $1,000 to go towards their continued efforts in sustainability, a $250 Loblaws gift card and public recognition at the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.

Kinsmen Foundation Honoured U of S Agriculture Students

It is a long-standing 40-year tradition that every year Telemiracle is held in Regina or Saskatoon, a group of College of Agriculture students (Agros) from University of Saskatchewan, push a bed from one city to the other raising a substantial amount of money for the telethon before and along the way. This year, they had a goal to raise $50,000 and blew past by raising a record $88,000 for TeleMiracle 46, and to date have raised over $400,000, making a huge difference for so many Saskatchewan residents.

Wielgosz - Youth in Philanthropy Honouree

Ava Wielgosz (centre) was a Youth in Philanthropy honouree at the 2022 National Philanthropy Day Awards celebration for her continued support of Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Chldren’s Hospital Foundation.

Ava bakes and sells cheescakes during the holiday season and has raised thousands of dollars to support sick and injured kids receiving specialized care. It has been a busy year for the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA), and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as President of an organization with such a strong and impactful history. Over the past 90 years, CCA has continued the tradition of representing the interests of Canadian cattle producers and overcoming challenges to build a strong a vibrant industry to pass on to the next generation – and this still holds true today. With 2022 marking a significant milestone in our history, we are releasing a series of short videos in the New Year highlighting our defining moments.

Over the past year, CCA board members and staff remained committed to moving forward on key policy priorities, addressing the pressing issues facing our industry, and sharing our positive sustainability story at home and on the world stage.

This past spring, it was all hands on deck at CCA when it came to engaging Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators, officials at Health Canada, and consumers on the proposed regulatory change that would have seen a warning label for saturated fat placed on ground beef. We are humbled by the strong support that we received from Canadians, who sent thousands of letters to MPs across the country. In the process, we established an important connection on the nutritional value of beef in kitchens from coast to coast to coast. This initiative was truly a #teambeef effort

The impacts of adverse weather – drought to flooding to Hurricane Fiona – remain top of mind at CCA.

Following the announcement of the initial regions eligible for the Livestock Tax Deferral provision in late summer, we continue engaging with the federal government to ensure all impacted producers are included.

With winter now upon some of us, there is an urgency in the Maritimes to rebuild fences, barns, and infrastructure for livestock, including cattle. We share in the frustration with the timelines for the rollout of much needed support in the region and our thoughts remain with the families impacted. With the federal government announcing $1 billion in Hurricane Fiona Relief, CCA is working to ensure these funds can help support impacted cattle producers.

Going into 2023, CCA’s board and staff will continue engaging with Parliamentarians and department officials. We are monitoring developments concerning the rollout of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), with our attention focused on enhancements to the business risk management (BRM) suite of programs and actively participating in the consultation process with industry on the review of the AgriStability program. We are pushing back on adding an environmental objective to BRM programming as this will inevitably increase the complexity of already complicated programs.

The 25 per cent increase to the funding envelope for research and innovation was welcomed news. Our advocacy efforts on this front focus on support for research programs aimed not only at key environmental

challenges, but also enhancing productivity. This is a key ingredient to the success and sustainability of our sector.

Our attention is also on efforts to protect Canada from the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), which requires constant vigilance. We continue to build on our advocacy efforts for the establishment of a Canadian vaccine bank. This is a key part of our preparedness plan to help mitigate losses to the Canadian beef industry and our economy if FMD were ever to occur in Canada.

In the current discussion about the environment, specifically around sustainability and climate, cattle are an important consideration. Raising cattle in Canada does so much good for our environmental landscape –from protecting native grasslands to enhancing biodiversity to improving water and soil quality.

To share the efforts undertaken by our industry, CCA has initiated a digital campaign to showcase the great work cattle producers are doing across the country. The campaign is aimed at connecting with policy leaders to consumers to participants of the global climate conference, COP27. We are proud to share our story. If we don’t tell our story, we know someone else will.

In Canada, raising cattle is part of the climate change solution and CCA is taking a leadership role in sharing our sustainability story with the federal government. We are beginning to see the needle move as our sustainable production practices are now referenced in Government publications including “Faster and Further: Canada’s Methane Strategy.” We will continue sharing our story and updates on the status of our 2030 beef goals with Parliamentarians and ..continued

Representatives from CCA have also been on the ground and active participants in conversations happening globally about the environment, food insecurity, climate change, and biodiversity. CCA was pleased to represent the Canadian beef industry at COP27 in Egypt in both our own delegation and joining the Government of Canada’s delegation.

Bob Lowe, CCA’s Past President and Mitchell Zoratti, CCA’s Environment and Climate Change Coordinator,

highlighted our leadership and experience in sustainable cattle production as speakers at the conference. We are also proud that our short film, Guardians of the Grasslands, was featured at the Government of Canada’s pavilion.

We also had the opportunity to participate in the COP15 hosted by China in Montreal, which focused on biodiversity. It was a venue to highlight the role that working grazing landscapes in Canada play in carbon sequestration and biodiversity and our leadership on this issue.

You can count on us to be at the table representing your interests and ensuring the best outcome possible for cattle producers across Canada, whether it is at home or on the international stage. CCA needs to be a part of these conversations to ensure that an accurate perspective of sustainable beef production is considered in these important policy discussions.

With November all wrapped up, all of the fall shows are now complete with several CCYA members competing in them and doing very well. The Charolais breed had very strong representation this year, and held their representation up to par with last year. This year’s semen auction was a tremendous success! We held our sale in conjunction with the National Charolais Sale at the Toronto Royal this year. We had 3 semen lots and one embryo lot. The National
